In 1987, I embarked on the adventure of a lifetime. Two years earlier, the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute had discovered  Titanic  and now I co-led a 6 million dollar dive expedition to the site of the sinking.

Our team’s mission was to explore the wreckage, retrieve artifacts and film the broken remains. Standing on the slippery deck of our salvage ship, it was thrilling to hover more than 2.5 miles above the legendary  Titanic .

Our team spent 44 days at sea and the expedition dove to the site 32 times in an amazing 20 million dollar submersible. We returned with hundreds of hours of haunting ghost-like images. They formed the framework of “Return to  Titanic …Live!” a two-hour television special that I co-produced with my partner Doug Lewelyn. This special became the second highest rated live TV documentary ever.

After 30 years Titanic remains my magnificent obsession. I’ve dedicated my career to her and the 2,208 passengers and crew aboard its tragic maiden voyage. It started with TV shows and became these permanent Titanic Museum Attractions in Branson, MO and Pigeon Forge, TN.

These giant museum attractions exhibit one of the largest permanent collections of  Titanic  artifacts and memorabilia. Inside, guests enter a unique world where they can climb an exact replica of the most famous staircase— Titanic’s  hand-crafted Grand Staircase.

I want to share as closely as possible with guests what  Titanic’s  actual passengers and crew experienced aboard ship. Visitors can touch finely carved wooden inlays, grasp the wheel on the captain’s bridge, tap out messages on the ship’s wireless, feel an iceberg’s chill, stroll decks and galleries and listen to stories told by real survivors. I think of it as “Living Theatre” with guests as part of the experience. Plus it offers a realistic, interactive educational experience for students of all ages.

How Branson's Titanic Museum honors the triumph and tragedy of the world's most famous ship

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

As I stood surrounded by photographs of the musicians who bravely played on as the Titanic sunk deeper and deeper toward her icy fate, I felt myself fighting back tears. The live pianist had paused briefly — leaving space for me and others in the room to reflect on the moment's significance.

It's been more than 100 years since the Titanic sunk while en route from South Hampton, England, to New York City. Still, I felt so aware of the emotions that the musicians — and the passengers they hoped to calm with their melodies — must have been feeling in those final hours that I was almost certain they were in the room with me.

visit titanic museum

This was not at all how I thought I'd feel when I paid a visit to the Titanic Museum during a family trip to Branson, Missouri.

Like many of us, I've been familiar with the history of the Titanic since elementary school. Although I found the story both tragic and fascinating, I expected to spend an hour or so looking at interesting artifacts and photos before making a requisite visit to the gift shop and moving on to our next activity. But my visit ended up being much more poignant than what I had read about in history books or seen in movies.

There are plenty of artifacts — more than 400 valued at $4.5 million, to be exact — at the Titanic Museum, given by descendants and recovered from expeditions to the wreckage. However, the attraction focuses first and foremost on the ship's survivors and fatalities, making it all the more impactful.

Here's what you need to know before you visit the Titanic Museum.

Where is the Titanic Museum?

visit titanic museum

The Titanic Museum is in Branson on 76 Country Boulevard, also known as the Branson Strip. This is where many of the town's attractions are. The area includes Branson's well-known theater district and popular tourist spots like the Aquarium at the Boardwalk, the Branson Ferris Wheel and the World's Largest Toy Museum.

It's hard to miss, as the exterior of the museum is a replica of the Titanic — iceberg, water and all.

There is a second Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennesee, with similar displays and interactive exhibits.

How much does it cost to visit the Titanic Museum?

visit titanic museum

General-admission timed-entry tickets to the Titanic Museum cost $32 for adults and $15 for children ages 5 to 12 when purchased online in advance through the museum's website . Children ages 4 and under are free. Depending on the size of your party, you may be able to save with the Titanic Museum's Branson Family One-Day Pass. The pass is valid for two adults and up to four children; it costs $115 when purchased online.

Tickets purchased in person cost slightly more and may be unavailable if all time slots are filled.

If you are planning to visit other attractions in the area, there are a variety of combination tickets available that you can use to visit Branson's other shows and activities in Branson, including Silver Dollar City and Dolly Parton Stampede.

What is it like visiting the Titanic Museum?

visit titanic museum

When we entered the museum, we were handed a "boarding pass" with the name and description of a real-life Titanic passenger printed on it. We were instructed to keep the card with us throughout our journey, and we would find out their fate. It was interactive and personal elements like this that brought the experience to life.

visit titanic museum

Each visitor received a headset to follow along with the museum's audio tour, and there are also youth audio tour stations throughout the exhibits. Many of these were accompanied by interactive activities and quizzes that ended up being some of the highlights of the day for my kids.

Most rooms featured exhibits designed to resemble different parts of the ship. We started by learning about the Titanic's construction, crew and the planned path of her maiden voyage.

Many of the photos come from Francis Browne, a photographer and priest who was only on board for a portion of the Titanic's journey. Seeing these photos of the Titanic that depicted the voyage before tragedy struck helped set the stage for the rest of our tour.

From there, we were taken through the kitchen and boiler room. We saw menus, dishes, cookware, photos and other kitchen and dining room artifacts that showed the difference between the dining experiences of first-class and third-class passengers.

In the boiler room, we learned how hard the staff worked to keep the fires stoked, working and sleeping in shifts with only a few hours to rest before it was time to get back to work. To demonstrate just how difficult their job was, the museum had a surprisingly heavy shovel you could pick up and pretend to throw some coal into the fire.

visit titanic museum

The museum also had replicas of the different types of cabins on board the Titanic. There was such a stark contrast in the size and decor between the first- and third-class cabins, but it was the difference in cost and onboard experiences that really shocked me.

visit titanic museum

Third-class passengers often spent a year's salary just to squeeze into a tiny cabin with their entire family or total strangers if they were traveling alone. First-class passengers had spacious, well-furnished accommodations that, while obviously expensive, often did not carry the same apples-to-apples financial burden for them.

visit titanic museum

Between the third- and first-class cabin exhibits was an exact replica of the Titanic's Grand Staircase. This would have separated the ship's third- and first-class passengers; even in the museum, the atmosphere shifted as we moved to what would have been the ship's upper decks.

This was also when we further delved into the events surrounding the sinking of the Titanic.

My kids had fun sticking their hands in a tank of icy cold 28-degree water and fighting to stay upright on decks sloped to mimic different phases of the ship as it sank. But for me, it was just another example of how the museum effectively made the experience feel real and relevant.

visit titanic museum

One of the final rooms in the museum displays images from the discovery of the Titanic's wreckage and the many expeditions that have been made since.

The museum's founder, John Joslyn, made many of those voyages himself. Joslyn, who also founded the Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, is not shy about his self-proclaimed obsession with the Titanic. He has completed 32 dives to the ship's remains in a submersible, bringing back photographs and artifacts from the wreckage.

visit titanic museum

Before "disembarking," we learned the fate of the passenger we had been assigned upon arrival.

Of the Titanic's 2,208 passengers, only 705 survived. Most of those were women and children. My assigned passenger was among them. Genevieve Cassebeer was one of the lucky ones, and because of her and other survivors, the rest of us can glimpse into the Titanic's ill-fated maiden — and only — voyage.

visit titanic museum

Bottom line

From the outside, it's easy to assume the Titanic Museum is all show and no substance in a town full of attractions geared toward tourists. But it turned out to be quite the opposite experience for me.

The museum showed as much reverence toward the Titanic's accomplishments as its tragedy. Each exhibit was designed so that everyone could experience and enjoy them and create lasting memories, regardless of age or previous familiarity with the Titanic.

There are over 400 real artifacts, worth over a whopping 4.5 million dollars, spread throughout 20 different galleries in the museum, just waiting for you to visit.

If rooms full of precious antiques aren’t enough to convince the kids to tag along, don’t worry.

The museum is filled to the brim with interactive exhibits. The Pigeon Forge Titanic exhibits will be begging you to bring them for a chance to:

  • Steer the captain’s wheel like a true sailor
  • Shovel coal in the boiler room
  • Walk through a first-class cabin suite and third-class bunks
  • Touch a real iceberg (yes, the iconic Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum iceberg wall!)
  • Send an SOS signal
  • Sit in a lifesize lifeboat
  • Try to balance on sloping decks that imitate the angle of the sinking ship
  • See the world’s largest Titanic model that was made using 56,000 LEGO® BRICKS by a 10-year-old boy with autism. This is one of the best Titanic attractions in Titanic at Pigeon Forge!

Between the Titanic artifacts and experiences, you’ll gain a new understanding of what the Titanic passengers and crew members, as well as Jack and Rose, bravely endured.

When To Go To Pigeon Forge

It’s time to put in some nautical miles and head to the museum. But when to begin the journey? Consult a star chart, or maybe just your calendar.

While there’s no bad- time to go since the Pigeon Forge Titanic adventure takes place indoors, here are the advantages of going at certain times of the year:

  • Fall: Pigeon Forge, Tennessee , is located on the border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which means a jaw-dropping landscape bursting in vibrant shades is waiting for you after your museum visit if you go this time of year.

Pro Tip: Both active and retired members of the military receive free admission in November.

  • Winter: The Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum goes all out for its Christmas and winter celebration. Dazzling lights and evergreen garlands highlight the Titanic’s glowing splendor.

Pro Tip: Once January hits, Pigeon Forge will be in its off-season, so you’ll have a better chance at steering clear of big crowds until things start to warm up again in the spring.

  • Spring: The off-season will be finishing up, and Pigeon Forge will gradually start to kick into full gear again. Crowds may still be a little thinner if you’re looking to go to outdoor attractions and willing to risk the possibility of a chilly day.
  • Summer: We can’t think of any drawbacks to going this time of year. Go wild at every nearby outdoor attraction, like the theme park Dollywood , then use your time at the museum to cool off in the icy air conditioning (or next to a literal iceberg).

The museum almost always opens at 9 a.m., but closing hours vary depending on the day. Take note of this when you’re choosing tickets. Don’t forget to drop by the gift shops! There are interesting finds for adults and the little ones.

Titanic Museum Pigeon Forge TN FAQ

There are some secrets of the sea that only old salts know. When it comes to the secrets of visiting the Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum, we’ll let you in on a few. Here are more helpful tips about the Titanic attraction Pigeon Forge TN.

Wondering how long does it take to go through Titanic Museum or how long is the Titanic Museum tour? Plan to spend about two hours on your tour. You’ll have plenty to do and see. Psst… the tour is self-guided, so feel free to meander through at your own pace and soak in every last detail.

Can you take pictures at the Titanic Museum? Unfortunately, photos aren’t allowed inside the museum. Guests are not allowed to take pictures of the Titanic Museum from inside. Psst… you can still do it for the ‘gram. The building is 30,000 square feet and shaped like the original ship, which makes for some pretty cool Titanic Museum attraction photos.

Snap a few before or after your guided tour, and your likes won’t have to suffer.

Where To Stay Near the Titanic Museum TN

All this sailor talk has probably left you weary for a night of rest more soothing than falling asleep to the lull of the ocean waves on the Titanic. A king-size bed at one of these great hotel and lodging options will make you feel like the king of the world.

The Ramada Pigeon Forge North by Wyndham is less than a mile from the museum and offers all the amenities a first-class passenger could desire.

Slides and swims and splashes, oh my! The Country Cascades Waterpark Resort is a quick drive and will give your kids — or yourself (we won’t judge) — the chance to get in the water sans a ship.

The Willow Brook Lodge is a chance to spend some time in the lap of luxury. Traveling between attractions in Pigeon Forge will be a breeze, as it’s located in the heart of the city.

Wondering where is the Titanic Museum? The Pigeon Forge branch is located at 2134 Parkway, Pigeon Forge, TN 37863.

What To Eat and Drink

The Titanic had around 60 chefs and five kitchens. This meant there was probably some serious cooking talent aboard to serve the passengers nothing less than the best. Someone tell the Food Network we have a show idea — the Titanic Table , anyone?

Learning about all the ship’s galleys will whet your appetite, so grab a bite before you head in for the night. We highly recommend:

  • You’ll get a good dose of Southern hospitality at The Old Mill Restaurant , where you can get a lot of menu items Southern-fried. Talk about finger-lickin’ good.
  • Local Goat is right down the street and boasts the use of many locally-sourced ingredients so you can eat like a native. You’ll find New American fare here. The word on the street is that their burgers are all the rage.
  • Leave the kids at the hotel for this one. The Tennessee Shine Company offers drinks in Mason jars for a genuine distillery experience.

Where Else To Go in Pigeon Forge

Take a quick look through a nautical telescope from the ship’s deck and you’ll see there’s more to do in the area. Once your Pigeon Forge Titanic experience is complete, you can get a feel for the lay of the land in the rest of Pigeon Forge when you bundle one of these attractions with your Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum tickets :

  • Anakeesta offers a new take on theme parks. Take in breathtaking views of the Great Smoky Mountains as you swing from tree to tree on a zooming zipline, the calmly paced Chondola, or the thrilling mountain coaster.
  • There’s no shortage of activities to open your eyes in wonder at WonderWorks . It’s filled with new thrills at every corner, like a ropes challenge course, forensic science exhibit, and disaster zone that simulates a natural disaster.
  • Exciting sporting competitions paired with knee-slapping antics create the perfect formula for a roaring good time. Catch all the log rolling, tree climbing, and axe throwing fun at the Lumberjack Feud Show .
  • The Country Tonite show is a one-stop-shop for all the talent you could ask for — singing, dancing, and comedy. The whole family will enjoy this country music celebration.

Land ho! While our travel guide is about to dock, it’s just the beginning of your real adventure at the Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum . Don’t search for “Titantic Museum.” The correct Google search should be “The Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge” or “Titanic Museum in Tennessee.”

Your visit is sure to go down in history as an emotion-evoking, magical experience that pays tribute to times past. We see those stars in your eyes, but whether they’re for Kate and Leo or the insatiable nostalgia an incident like the sinking of the Titanic stirs up, we’re not sure. Maybe it’s both?

Regardless, it’s clearly time to do something about it. So get your Pigeon Forge Titanic Museum boarding pass today and head to sea!

Inside Look: The Titanic Museum Pigeon Forge TN

Join us as we take an inside look at what to expect when you visit the Titanic Museum Pigeon Forge !

Meredith: Hi, I’m Meredith with Visit My Smokies and today we’re about to board the Titanic Museum right here in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Come along and let’s take an insider’s look.

Titanic sign in Pigeon Forge

Meredith: I am. I couldn’t help but to notice, coming in from outside, the ship is massive. Is this to scale?

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: No, actually the exterior of the ship is half scale. Now, the rooms inside are full scale. We were able to use the original blueprints.

Meredith: So does everyone get a card or am I special?

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: Oh you are special, but everyone does get a card.

Meredith: So this is a very interactive place.

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: Very. The children love the Titanic.

Titanic Museum in Pigeon Forge

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: No, they’re actual Titanic artifacts. We have over 400 artifacts valued at $4 million.

Meredith: So they were on the Titanic?

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: Everything was on the Titanic. Anything you see in glass or under cases are true Titanic artifacts. This is a beautiful cut out and all the different passengers and the grand staircase, first class dining. Of course, we did have pianos on board. We have five pianos, and then over here is the actual voyage, the actual route that the Titanic took during the maiden voyage.

Meredith: You have quite a few artifacts here. Where did you get these from?

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: The artifacts – they were either found floating in the ocean, came off victim’s bodies or carried off by survivors. It’s amazing what was found in the trunks as they were floating.

Now, the grand staircase is to scale. The entire rotunda is just like you were on the ship and, of course, the most expensive part of the staircase is the floor and it was a brand new invention called “linoleum.”

Meredith: It’s absolutely beautiful.

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: It’s gorgeous. It’s the heart of the ship.

Meredith: I understand that there’s a lot of interactive things as well as the artifacts. Can you tell me a little bit more about the interactive part?

Walk through the Titanic Museum

Of course, we have the Captain’s Bridge. All the young boys like to come in here because they get to steer the ship. They also have the Tot-Titanic area where the little ones have a smaller version of the Captain’s Wheel. We have a puzzle, an electronic polar bear for everyone to talk to so just think of your favorite questions and Polar might be able to answer it.

Meredith: I love that when you’re in the museum you feel like you’re actually on the ship as if you were there with the running water that was happening over there as if you were in third class. You can feel the history in this place.

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: Now we’re gonna head to the Memorial Room. This is where you’ll find out your fate. I will tell you that you are one of the lucky ones. You do survive and, of course, I’m the unsinkable Molly Brown so I also survived.

But you know, when we struck the iceberg and sank, time stopped. It stopped for the Titanic, just like this watch. It was found on a victim’s body. Stopped at 2:36 in the morning and every day that’s what I do. I stop time and I tell about the passengers that were on board. Not just the unsinkable Molly Brown, but all of them and that’s our way of honoring them every day.

Join us as we take an inside look at the Titanic Museum

Titanic’s “Unsinkable” Molly Brown: Oh, thank you!

The whole exhibit was very interesting and it was presented in a fantastic way. There was a lot of great information with each artifact. It is a lot of reading and the information helped to understand more about this historical event. Some of the areas are very impressive in the way they are set up. It was well worth it!

We attended the Titanic Experience dinner theater and it was excellent! The food was excellent and the show was entertaining and interactive. It was done in such a way that you got a sense of what the night was like. It was such a great experience!

It is very worth it! A fascinating museum!! Very beautiful and well mounted. The interaction throughout the tour with actors representing real passengers on the ship make a big difference with other museums. Mainly Molly, she is amazing! Thanks to her you will never forget this visit!

Everything was ready for us when we arrived, including our tour guide, "Miss Dorothy Gibson", who was outstanding! It was all so interesting, and she most definitely kept our attention with all her info as well as some fun trivia. The whole group had a great time. Well worth the time and money! Thank you, Miss Dorothy!

Merced Guimarães outside the house where the mass grave was found

Experience: I discovered a mass grave under my house

There were many bones. We had no idea how they had got there

I n 1966, when I was 10 years old, my mother and I moved to Gamboa, a neighbourhood by the waterfront in the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro. When I got married in 1977, we stayed in the area, had three kids and set up a pest control company.

In 1990, we bought our first house there. It had a strange layout: when you entered, you had to go down a very long corridor. It was also very old, so we knew we would have to do some building work. We had dreams of adding a second floor, so each of our children could have their own room.

The work finally began in 1996. We closed off half of the house so construction workers could start digging holes in the back for the pillars needed to support the extension.

It was a hot, sunny day in January when, over lunch, one of the workers told me about finding animal bones in the holes they were digging. He wondered if the previous owners had had a lot of animals. After lunch, I rummaged through the piles of debris he had dug up and, to my shock, found pieces of skulls. I told the construction worker that these weren’t animal bones – they were human.

Terror came over his face and he refused to go back to work. All the other workers also left early – nobody wanted to disturb the people who were laid to rest there. My daughters no longer wanted to live in the house either – they were scared that it was haunted.

I just wanted to know what to do next. There were so many bones, and we had no idea how they had got there – did a serial killer bury his victims under our house? I remember feeling particularly shocked when I found some teeth that looked as if they had belonged to a child.

I called my friend and neighbour, Carlos, who had researched the history of Gamboa. If anybody knew the story of the bones, it would be him. He came over that evening and showed me a history book that identified the area under my house as the New Blacks cemetery .

The cemetery was used to bury enslaved people who died on ships that arrived at the port of Rio de Janeiro, or who died shortly after disembarking. Historians estimate that about 6,000 people were buried there between 1769 and 1830. Despite having lived in Gamboa most of my life, I had never heard of this. How could I have lived here for so long and not known about the cemetery?

After hearing about my discovery, the director of the José Bonifácio Cultural Centre, a museum of Afro-Brazilian culture and history, came to visit. When he saw the boxes of bones, he made the sign of the cross and started to cry. He asked if he could inform the National Historic and Artistic Heritage Institute about what I had found, and I said yes.

Researchers came to study the finds. I asked to be kept updated on their progress, but years passed and nothing happened. In the meantime, I was not allowed to move forward with any construction. In 1998, we had to move out of the house because the open holes resulted in water infiltration and a crack in the wall. If I wanted something to be done with what I had found, I would have to do it myself.

On 20 November 2001, we opened our house to the public. We decided that we had to make these findings accessible. My husband and I bought two neighbouring houses to build a museum, and the Pretos Novos Institute (New Blacks Institute) was officially founded in 2005. It’s an educational space, a museum and an anthropological research centre.

after newsletter promotion

Today the institute is home to a dozen educators, anthropologists and tour guides. We provide free walking tours of the Port Zone, telling the story of the African diaspora in Brazil and the history of slavery in this area to students across Rio de Janeiro state.

Despite all of the adversity, this is my life’s work. Countering the erasure of Black history in my neighbourhood is the most important thing I’ve ever done. Though it is difficult to maintain the institute, I will only stop doing it when racism is no longer a problem. Until then, I will continue to preserve the history that Brazil would prefer to ignore.

As told to Nicole Froio

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

visit titanic museum

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

visit titanic museum

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

visit titanic museum

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

visit titanic museum

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
