Panic! at the Disco Announces Split: ‘It’s Been a Hell of a Journey’

Panic! at the Disco

Panic! at the Disco, the pop-rock band that formed in Las Vegas nearly 20 years ago and gradually became a solo vehicle for frontman Brendon Urie , announced on Tuesday morning that the group will end after its forthcoming European tour. Urie says he and his wife are expecting their first child and “I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more.”

The final tour begins in Vienna on Feb. 20 and concludes in Manchester, England on March 10. Urie’s statement follows below in full.

Well, it’s been a hell of a journey… Growing up in Vegas I could’ve never imagined where this life would take me. So many places all over the world, and all the friends we’ve made along the way.

But sometimes a journey must end for a new one to begin. We’ve been trying to keep it to ourselves, though some of you may have heard.. Sarah and I are expecting a baby very soon! The prospect of being a father and getting to watch my wife become a mother is both humbling and exciting. I look forward to this next adventure.

That said, I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more.

Thank you all for your immense support over the years. I’ve sat here trying to come up with the perfect way to say this and I truly can’t put into words how much it has meant to us. Whether you’ve been here since the beginning or are just finding us, it has been a pleasure to not only share the stage with so many talented people but also share our time with you. I am looking forward to seeing everyone in Europe and the UK for one last run together.

I love you. I appreciate you. Thank you for existing.

The group, which released seven albums, formed in 2004 when Urie and co-founders Ryan Ross, Spencer Smith, and Brent Wilson were in high school. Their first album, “A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out,” was released the following year and, driven by the hit single “I Write Sins Not Tragedies,” quickly vaulted them into stardom. The album was certified triple platinum and the group cleaned up at the MTV Video Music Awards the following year. However, Wilson left the band and before the release of their sophomore effort, “Pretty. Odd.,” which represented a change of musical direction; ultimately Urie and Smith were the sole remaining founders. Two more albums, “Vices & Virtues” (with Urie and Smith playing all the instruments) and “Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!,” followed before Smith left unofficially in 2013 and for good in 2015. However, the band had long since become Urie’s solo vehicle.

Two more albums followed, interspersed with Urie appearing on Broadway in a leading role in Cyndi Lauper’s musical “Kinky Boots.” He has collaborated with many musicians over the years, ranging from Fall Out Boy to, more recently, Taylor Swift, duetting with her and appearing in the elaborate video for her 2018 hit “Me!” He relaunched Panic last year with the album and single “Viva Las Vengeance ” and followed with a tour, but the band failed to reach its previous peaks.

With Urie as the sole constant member of the band, it is unclear what the distinction between Panic and his future projects will be, but apparently he felt the name is no longer representative and, at the age of 35, decided it’s time to move on from it.

Panic! At The Disco Kick Off Farewell Tour: See The Setlist

By Katrina Nattress

February 22, 2023

2022 MTV VMAs – Show

Last month, Brendon Urie threw a gut punch to fans by announcing Panic! At The Disco would "be no more" after their upcoming European tour. Over the weekend, they kicked off that tour in Vienna. Though it's their farewell run, the band didn't make any significant changes to its Viva Las Vengeance setlist — playing the latest album from front to back in the middle of the set. They ended the show with "High Hopes," which got Urie more than a little choked up .

The Panic! At The Disco mastermind decided to step away from the band after he and his wife welcomed their first child . "The prospect of being a father and getting to watch my wife become a mother is both humbling and exciting. I look forward to this next adventure," he wrote in the breakup announcement. "That said, I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more."

The songs take an introspective look into his relationship with his decade plus career including growing up in Las Vegas, love, and fame.

“Viva Las Vengeance is a look back at who I was 17 years ago and who I am now with the fondness I didn't have before. I didn’t realize I was making an album and there was something about the tape machine that kept me honest.” - Brendon Urie

At The Disco since the 2018 release of their #1 album, RIAA certified platinum-selling Pray For The Wicked, highlighted by the 5x-platinum smash hit “High Hopes” which simultaneously hit #1 across three different radio formats and broke the Billboard record for most weeks atop the Hot Rock Songs Chart! The hit song was nominated for Top Rock Song at the Billboard Music Awards as well as Favourite Pop Rock Song at the AMAs. Panic! At The Disco Is Playing A UK Arena Tour

This is not a drill.

Panic! At The Disco's Brendon Urie

There’s clearly something in the water at the moment when it comes to the emo revival — great news indeed for anybody who frequented Gothic fashion destination Blue Banana or plastered on the eyeliner growing up. As well as My Chemical Romance staging the reunion they spent years claiming would never happen this year, the appropriately named When We Were Young festival is bringing together Paramore, Taking Back Sunday, and Jimmy Eat World on the same line-up in Las Vegas later this year. Feeling giddy? There’s more still for UK fans — Panic! At The Disco has a new album on the way, and is putting on a 2023 tour to make all of your emo dreams come true.

Here’s everything you need to know before heading into the ticket battle.

Where Can I See Panic! At The Disco in 2023?

Consisting of just Brendon Urie these days, the Las Vegas act is gearing up to release new album Viva Las Vengeance on Aug. 19 2022, with a tour to follow early next year. The UK lap will kick off on Mar 3 in Glasgow, at the OVO Hydro. He’ll then play Birmingham’s Utilita Arena on Mar 4, London’s O2 Arena on Mar 6, and finally Manchester’s AO Arena on Mar 10.

When Do Tickets Go On Sale For Panic! At The Disco’s 2023 Tour?

Tickets for the tour hit general sale on Friday June 10 at 10am via both Ticketmaster and SeeTickets . For eager emos, there’s also a presale for anyone signed up to the act’s mailing list taking place on June 8 at 11am, and buying a pre-order of the new album through the official store grants access to an even earlier sale on June 7 at 10am.

What Do We Know So Far About Panic! At The Disco’s New Album Viva Las Vengeance ?

Announced in June 2022, Viva Las Vengeance is Panic! At The Disco’s first release in four years — and the newly-released title-track (with an excellent video to boot) gives an early glimpse of what to expect.

According to Urie, “ Viva Las Vengeance is a look back at who I was 17 years ago and who I am now with the fondness I didn't have before,” he said in a press release. “I didn’t realise I was making an album and there was something about the tape machine that kept me honest.”

Urie has also confirmed that £1 from every tour ticket will go straight to his own Highest Hopes Foundation — a fund which supports “supports organisations that advocate support for human rights for all people and communities subject to discrimination or abuse on the basis of gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and gender identity.”

Moral panic over a rise in violence ahead of Euro 2024 is bad for fans like me – and bad for football

Cas Mudde

Many are hyping a ‘return to the dark days’. Their obsession with security comes at a high political price

F ootball fans heading to the stadiums of Germany for Euro 24 this summer face “a resurgence in far-right neo-Nazi hooligans who have been overwhelming the police across Europe”, the Sun has warned , with its usual sense for nuance.

It was just one of many recent articles that have appeared in British and other European media on the alleged “ return ” of “hooliganism” in Europe . The situation is apparently so bad that governments in countries such as France and the Netherlands have vowed to tackle the issue. Almost always, the response leans towards the authoritarian, including calls for more police and more restrictions.

But is football violence really on the rise, and is more “law and order” the correct answer? Let’s be clear, football violence does exist and is a concern for (some) fans and players . It is even a serious public order problem in some countries, such as Serbia , where hooligans are closely connected to far-right politics and organised crime. But in most European countries, violence in and around stadiums is sporadic, limited to some highly sensationalised incidents – such as a few games involving Marseille and West Ham United .

Even if football violence is on the rise, the key question is, compared with when? Obviously, it is worse today than during the height of the pandemic, when games were either suspended or played without fans. Another reason why violence may be worse than just before the pandemic is the conduct of the “ lockdown generation ” of fans, but this is most likely a temporary phenomenon. Finally, claims of a “ return to the dark days ” – the hooliganism of the 1980s in England and the 1990s on the continent – can only be made by people who never went to a game in those years, or have forgotten the brutal violence in the longstanding feud between Feyenoord Rotterdam and Tottenham Hotspur “fans” in the 1970s and 1980s .

So, where does this perception of increased football violence come from then, if not from hard data? First, the media has always hyped and sensationalised football violence, adopting a tone of moral panic and considering it a reflection of a broader social problem. This is strengthened by a misrepresentation (and misunderstanding) of fan culture. For instance, “ultras” – relatively large groups of hardcore fans who mainly support their club with elaborate tifo (such as banners, pyro, singing) inside stadiums – are often conflated with “hooligans”, very small groups of violent gangs who mostly fight other hooligans far away from the stadiums. There is also a conflation of “hooligans” and the far right .

But exaggerated concerns about football violence are also a consequence of the increased commercialisation and commodification of the sport. Football leagues and clubs have become big business, generating most of their income from people who never attend games – through multibillion pound broadcasting rights and online merchandise . Violence – or whatever the increasingly detached, middle-class “consumers” of football perceive to be violence, including just rowdy fans in the stadium – is bad for business.

Despite the flimsy empirical basis, the hype has led to an increased “ securitisation ” of football. Securitisation describes the process whereby an issue becomes defined primarily as a matter of security, thus enabling law and order measures to address it.

Liverpool supporters are unable to get into the Stade de France, Paris, ahead of the 2023 Champions League final.

Securitisation has a self-strengthening logic: mass policing and surveillance then justify further security measures. If police officers are deployed to soccer games in big numbers, football must have a security problem. Moreover, in the name of security, new crimes are created, such as being drunk in or around a stadium, which then creates new criminals.

Securitisation also creates its own “experts”. If football is mainly seen as sport or entertainment, you look for people with expertise in sport or entertainment. But if it is mainly seen as a security issue, you look for people with expertise in security. This is exactly what the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) did earlier this year, when it nominated Frank Paauw, a police chief , as its next chairman, after several games were suspended or abandoned after “misbehaviour” in the stands. This mostly involved isolated or non-violent incidents, such as fans throwing beer , smoke bombs or fireworks on to the pitch. Yet the association argued that tackling the “misbehaviour of fans” was one of its biggest challenges. Obviously, the new president will approach football primarily as a security and policing issue, which, in a circular process, will further strengthen the emphasis on security.

Securitisation comes at a high cost to society. The highest costs are paid by fans who regularly attend games. They are, across Europe, increasingly treated like cattle and under permanent surveillance in and around the stadium, where there are restrictions on where you can sit, what you can wear, what you can say and even what you can drink. Treatment of away fans, as far as they are still allowed, is even worse. The Athletic described this experience as a combination of “tear gas, cages, and midnight lock-ins”.

As a groundhopper – someone who goes to games at as many different clubs in as many different countries as possible – alleged “security concerns” have kept me outside half-full stadiums (no ticket sales on game days) or unable to buy the only available tickets in the away stand (although sometimes my Dutch passport has convinced them that I was not, in fact, a hooligan).

Although the clubs and leagues bear much of the financial cost of surveillance cameras and private security guards inside stadiums, society as a whole pays for the ever-growing police presence and surveillance around football games – including the vast majority of games where there is no real security concern.

But there is also a steep political price. During “high-security” football games in many countries, areas around stadiums, including key recreational and shopping spaces, are often flooded with amped-up police, sometimes in riot gear, who discriminate little between “hooligan” and “passerby”, shoving and shouting at anyone who does not follow their protocol quickly enough.

The situation is worst for games organised by the governing bodies Fifa or Uefa, which are increasingly played within a kind of “state of emergency”, enforced by public and private security personnel. This is not just happening in authoritarian states, such as Qatar, which hosted the World Cup in 2022, but also in the heart of Europe .

Of course, it is not all doom and gloom. While stadiums were more welcoming to one group of fans before commercialisation and securitisation (notably white, working-class men), they were often hostile spaces for everyone else, including women, ethnic minorities and LGBTQ+ people. Today, partly through gentrification, partly through stricter enforcement of a more inclusive environment, many stadiums have become more welcoming to these groups. This is definitely the case in the sanitised stadiums of many Premier League teams.

But inclusion should be possible without pushing out the traditional fan or undermining the civil liberties of football fans and the wider public. A first rule should be to require empirically sound evidence for any new authoritarian measures. A second should be that the rights of the many are not sacrificed in favour of the security (fears) of the few.

With the popularity of women’s basketball on the rise, Prime Video and the WNBA have reached an extension of their current rights deal through the next two seasons.

The WNBA, which also has deal with ESPN and last year also signed one with ION, has performed well for Prime Video. The official announcement of the extension noted that the 2023 WNBA Commissioner’s Cup content nearly doubled the tune-in for the same game in 2022.

Live sports is also an area of increasing strategic focus for Prime Video as Amazon ramps up its video advertising efforts across its vast portfolio. NFL coverage, including exclusive Thursday Night Football telecasts, has boosted the company’s profile with advertisers. Ads recently started running on scripted programming on Prime Video. The company has scheduled its first presentation for advertisers during the heart of upfronts week in mid-May, taking its place alongside Disney, NBCUniversal, Netflix and other major sellers in the lineup.

The 21 WNBA games each season will stream exclusively on Prime Video everywhere in the world except in China, Japan, the UK, Italy, Spain, Finland and Germany. The full schedule for 2024 has not yet been released. Each team in the league plays 36 games. Prime Video also livestreams games featuring the Seattle Storm, with additional Storm games available exclusively to Prime members in Washington state.

“We’re thrilled to continue bringing exclusive national coverage of the WNBA and highlighting these exceptional athletes to Prime members,” said Charlie Neiman, Head of Sports Partnerships, Prime Video. “Following a successful 2023 season, we’re looking forward to reaching even more milestones with the WNBA and furthering our commitment to women’s sports.”
