Kruger National Park Guide

Spotlight on South Africa's premier safari reserve

Day Visitors – Planning your Safari

There are a lot of options for day visitors to Kruger National Park. With good planning, you’ll have time to enjoy a fulfilling mini-safari.

Entrance Fees Per Day

The first question that holidaymakers want to know the answer to, is how much a day pass to Kruger National Park costs.

We’ve got all the details about the admission prices per person and even for couples and families, for South African citizens, residents and foreigners, on our entry fees page.

If you’re a pensioner , there are no special SANParks conservation fee rates. What pensioners could get though, is discounted accommodation, but generally not on weekends or around public holidays.

Already have a Wild Card that covers entrance to Kruger National Park? Then use it instead of buying a day visitor ticket. Alternatively, if you’re planning to make further trips to Wild Card reserves, it might make financial sense to buy one.

Advanced Bookings

Be careful about planning your visit to the game reserve without having pre-paid the day entrance tariff. At peak times especially, like school holidays and long weekends, you might be all ready to go on your safari until you come across a sign at an entrance gate like this:

Day visitors quota full sign

So, what can you do about this to ensure you can get access to the park when you want to visit?

You can make a reservation for a day trip by contacting SANParks Central Reservations on +27 (0)12 428 9111 or online.

If you do make an advanced booking, you must book to enter the park at a nominated entrance gate. You won’t be able to enter through any other gate other than the one you booked. There’s also a small administration cost for each person for advanced bookings. This is on top of the regular conservation tariffs.

If you need to leave Kruger National Park and come back in again the same day, you may be able to get a re-entry permit from the gate you came in by. Check at the gate when you first go into the park.

Animal Sightings

Elephant

Some people ask how many animals you would expect to see in Kruger National Park on a one day safari. Well, seeing animals just depends on being in the right place at the right time and also how in tune your eyes (and ears) are to finding wildlife. Be assured though, that you won’t leave the park disappointed!

It’s worth checking the animal sightings boards to see what of the most well-known animals have been seen around the area during the day. Sightings boards are at park gates, picnic sites and rest camps.

The topic of food always comes up when someone starts getting hungry. There are several options for having lunch on your day game drive.

You can pack your own lunch and eat it at any picnic spot or main rest camp or even in your car if you’re glued to an amazing wildlife sighting. You may also hire a skottel braai (portable gas BBQ) at picnic sites and main rest camps to cook your own meal!

When you’re planning your safari, it’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast so you know what sort of temperature you’re in for!

If you need to cool off on a hot humid summer day, Skukuza and Letaba rest camps have swimming pools that can be used by day visitors.

If you want a guided tour of the park rather than driving your own car around, you could organise a half day tour through the reception of your accommodation. If you do so, the price of the tour will probably include the park entrance fee. Check with the tour operator before you book.

You could also try one of the half day park and ride Kruger National Park game drives. These tours depart in the morning and afternoon and run from the gates in the south-west of the park. You’d have to pre-book this type of tour to ensure your place on it!

4×4 Day Routes

There is one 4×4 route which could be done if you’re visiting the park for a day only. The Mananga Adventure Trail  leaves from Satara Rest Camp. You will need to pre-book this trip.

Some people visit Kruger National Park for the day to have a round of golf at the Skukuza golf course ! The course has 9-holes and is close to Paul Kruger Gate. You should feel a rush of adrenalin playing on the course because it’s not enclosed in a fence and any animal might wander onto it!

If you take all this into account, day visitors won’t be short of ideas or things to do!

Kruger Safari Tours - Compare 360 Packages

South Africa’s premier safari destination, Kruger National Park throws up some staggering statistics. Established in 1898, it extends over some 19,000km²/7,335mi² and supports a total of 147 mammal species (the most of any African national park). This includes an estimated 13,000 elephants, 40,000 buffalo, 2,000 lions and more rhinos than any other protected area. Kruger is an ideal safari destination at both ends of the price and experiential spectrum. No other major African park is so well geared to budget-conscious self-drivers. Equally, some of the all-inclusive private and concession lodges associated with Kruger and its immediate surroundings (including MalaMala, Sabi Sabi and Londolozi) rank among the most exclusive, prestigious and costly in Africa.

8 Questions About Kruger National Park Safaris

Philip Briggs

Answered by

Philip briggs.

book day visit kruger national park

When is the best time to go on safari in Kruger?

“The best time for Kruger safaris is during the southern hemisphere winter months of May to September, with wildlife-viewing conditions improving throughout this period. Climatically, it is most pleasant during these dry winter months (warm by day, cool by night) and there are fewer mosquitoes, which reduces the risk of contracting malaria. Winter offers the most productive wildlife viewing. This is because the vegetation tends to be lower and thinner, allowing for better visibility, and the lack of rain causes wildlife to gather around permanent water sources. Bird-watchers may arrange their Kruger tours for summer, when large numbers of migrant birds arrive from Europe and many resident species display a colorful breeding plumage. If you don’t like crowds, avoid visiting Kruger during South African school holidays.”

What are the most popular areas in the park?

“Most Kruger safari packages focus on the park’s southern third. Partly this is because it’s the closest section to Johannesburg, and pretty much everywhere else in South Africa, which means it fits most comfortably into a countrywide itinerary. In addition, the south has denser wildlife populations than the north and wildlife tends to be more habituated to cars (and therefore easy to view). There is also a greater choice of rest camps and concession lodges. Probably the most productive and popular game drives in the south comprise a triangle of roads connecting Skukuza, Lower Sabie and Satara, and the two roads running south from Skukuza to Malelane and Lower Sabie to Crocodile Bridge Gate. The popularity of these roads means they can become congested during busy periods such as school holidays, which is when locals tend to visit Kruger.”

Is Kruger good for a self-drive trip?

“Yes, Kruger is arguably the best self-drive safari destination anywhere in Africa. This is due to its easy accessibility, combined with a network of good surfaced roads and well-equipped rest camps, and the ready availability of interpretative material such as maps and dedicated field guides. Self-drivers can either rent a car in Johannesburg or Pretoria and drive to Kruger, or they can fly to an airport within the park or just outside it and pick up a rental car there (by advance arrangement). Self-drivers should bear in mind that cars drive on the left side of the road (like the UK and many former British colonies, but unlike the USA and most of Europe and Asia). You should allow for average driving speeds of around 30km per hour within the park. The speed limit in Kruger is 50km per hour on surfaced roads and 40km per hour on dirt, but you also need to allow time for stops to look at wildlife. Another attraction for independent travelers is that prices for Kruger safaris tend to be very low compared to other major African parks.”

What animals can I expect to see on a Kruger safari?

“All the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo) are present in significant numbers. However, wildlife viewing in Kruger can be hit-and-miss, so those seeking a Big Five quick fix would be better heading to one of the private reserves that offer expertly guided all-inclusive safari packages. That said, those who allocate a couple of days to their Kruger safari can be confident of encountering large herds of buffalo and elephant, and also stand a good chance of seeing lion, white rhino and, to a lesser extent, leopard and black rhino. Other wildlife commonly seen on Kruger safari trips includes spotted hyena, black-backed jackal, southern giraffe, plains zebra, hippo, warthog, wildebeest, impala, greater kudu, common waterbuck, vervet monkey and chacma baboon. Sightings of cheetah and African wild dog are possible but rare. Birdlife is prolific, with more than 500 species recorded. The park is particularly good for colorful savannah dwellers such as the lilac-breasted roller, yellow-billed hornbill and white-fronted bee-eater. There is also a wide variety of eagles, vultures and other raptors, as well as hefty ground dwellers such as the southern ground hornbill, kori bustard and ostrich.”

How long is the drive to the park?

“Coming from Johannesburg or elsewhere in Gauteng, most of the southern gates lie between 400km/249mi and 500km/311mi to the east, a drive of up to five hours on good surfaced roads. Coming from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport outside Mbombela (Nelspruit), most of the southern gates lie between 40km/25mi and 100km/62mi away, so allow up to 90 minutes. The most remote gate from Johannesburg is Pafuri, which lies about 620km/385mi to the northeast, a seven- to eight-hour drive on roads that deteriorate as you approach the park. When planning your Kruger holidays in the context of a full South Africa tour, be aware that the park is an astonishing 1,800km/1,118mi from Cape Town using the most direct route, and almost 750km/466mi from Durban.”

What condition are the roads in within Kruger?

“An excellent network of surfaced roads suitable for 2WD cars connects all gates and rest camps in Kruger. This is supplemented by a secondary network of unsurfaced roads, most of which are also suitable for any 2WD car, though some might become problematic after heavy rain. A good map showing the full internal road network can be bought cheaply at any entrance or rest camp gate, and all junctions within the park are signposted for easy navigation. From a wildlife-viewing perspective, surfaced roads often follow busier routes, so taking quieter unsurfaced routes will probably enhance your Kruger vacation.”

Is the park fenced?

“Until a few years back, the entire park was fenced. Today, however, it shares open borders with a number of private reserves that run along the western border, though in most (if not all) cases, these private reserves are fenced along their outward boundary. Fences along the international boundaries with the other two components of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Conservation Area (namely Limpopo National Park in Mozambique and Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe) are no longer maintained. This allows wildlife some freedom of movement into these neighboring reserves.”

What lodges or camps do you recommend for a Kruger safari?

“For a short Kruger holiday (up to 3 nights), I would concentrate on the far south. My favorite camp there is Lower Sabie, which has a beautiful location on the Sabie River at the heart of several top-notch wildlife-viewing roads. Skukuza, the park’s largest rest camp, is a bit too busy for some, but it’s very well equipped (with everything from ATMs and car-rental outlets to a well-stocked supermarket and restaurant) and has a useful location for exploring some good wildlife-viewing roads. Those able to dedicate more time to a Kruger tour (4 or more nights) could head to the central plains. Satara Rest Camp lies in an area of open savannah where lion and cheetah are often seen. Olifants Camp has a stunning location on a wooded ridge overlooking the eponymous river, and tiny Balule Satellite Camp is ideal for those seeking a remote and super-affordable bush experience. An extended Kruger tour (ideally 7 to 10 days) might also take in the far north, where my favorite rest camps are riverside Shingwedzi and remote Punda Maria. For those seeking more exclusive safari packages, try one of the dozen or so upscale concession lodges scattered throughout the park. These lodges offer a luxurious all-inclusive guided experience similar to the legendary Sabi Sands block of private reserves along the park’s western border.”

Africa’s Best DIY Safari

Kruger National Park Day Visitor Guide

Can you visit the kruger national park for a day.

Yes, the Kruger National Park welcomes day visitors! Before visiting the Kruger National Park take some time to plan your trip.

One thing you need to know up front is that the Park is huge and seeing all of it during a single trip is highly unlikely. Even planning a trip there is realistically only so much ground that you can cover in a single day.

There are strict speed limits within the park, roaming traffic officials and the distances between places always take longer than anticipated due to sightings. It’s for this very reason that advise guests to book either a half-day or full-day safari with Safaria. Being experts we know the terrain and where to go.

Does The Kruger National Park offer Guided Day Safaris?

Yes, this is the best way to view the Kruger National Park as a Day Visitor. Safaria offers guests who are staying outside or inside the Park expert guided Day Safaris throughout the Southern region of the Park as far up as Orpen Gate. Guests are collected from a selected gate by their guide on an Open Safari Vehicle and head out to explore and learn. Gate entrance times are dependant on the time of year. Rates are dependant on number of guests and type of Day Safari experience selected. There is a charge levied by SANParks for entrance to the Park that is paid at the Gate. Typically international guests will pay R400 per adult and R200 per child.

Are Children allowed on a Open Safari Vehicle in the Kruger?

SANParks has a policy that no children 6 years and younger are allowed on their open safari vehicles. Private operators such as Safaria do allow children of all ages on the vehicle but this is subject to parental acceptance. Safaria structures the entire Safari around you as a family with your kids making regular stops and taking every opportunity to inspire young minds. We love having kids on Safari.

Which is the best gate to enter the Kruger National Park?

This is completely dependant on if your are staying the night or visiting for the day. If you are staying the night its best to select a gate that allows you enough time to get to your overnight camp before camp gates close. If you are visiting for the day then selected the closest gate to your accommodation to maximise on your time in the park.

When booking a Day Safari with Safaria we will determine the most convenient gate of entry to you accommodation and confirm an accepted morning collection time. Your guide will arrive first that Gate and on arrival will complete all the necessary paper work prior to you arrival. Anticipating you arrival you guide will engage with you and direct you where to safely park your vehicle. A signature is required to complete the indemnity and then you will board the vehicle. After a briefing you will then depart of into the savannah. Booking a guided Day Safari guarantees you access even if it is a busy period with a quota system.

Kruger Park Entrance?

For day visitors, entry into the Kruger Park is on a first come first serve basis unless you have booked with a Day Safari operator like Safaria. The Kruger Park has strict quotas which are applicable for each gate over the peak season periods. It is advised to get to your selected gate of choice as early as possible as there are queues that build up. Again should you have booked with Safaria you would go straight to the front with quick access. Should you be staying overnight then the daily quota rules do not apply.

Guests can expect to pay a daily conservation entrance fee , which is applicable to all visitors unless you are in possession of a Wild Card. Payment is either made in South Africa Rand (local currency) or by credit or debit cards. Visa and Mastercard accepted.

At the gate visitors will need to complete an entrance form and indemnity that includes all the personal particulars of each guests as well as particulars of the vehicle. Should you be travelling with Safaria your guide will manage this on your behalf. Visitors must carry passports with them.

What are the Kruger Park Day Visitor rules?

As defined by SANParks here are a few of the generally expected rules that visitors are subject to. Day visitors are not permitted to bring alcohol into the park. Visitors are expected to be considerate of other guests at all times and to follow the designated Kruger National Park rules of acceptable behaviour. No loud music is allowed. Guests are requested not to litter or leave any items behind. Speeding is a criminal offence and may be subject to a fine.

What are the Kruger Park Gate Times?

The Kruger National Park has 10 entrance gates spread across the Parks borders. In the south these include: Crocodile Bridge, Malelane, Numbi, Phabeni and Paul Kruger. In the central region there is Orpen Gate and in the north there is Phalaborwa, Punda Maria, Pafuri. There is a gate that enters the park from Mozambique called Giriyondo. This is near Letaba Camp on the eastern boundary and has a border post attached.

Are there Picnic Sites and Restaurants in the Kruger National Park ?

For sure and they are wonderful to stop at and enjoy a leg stretch and time out of the vehicle. There are many picnic spots that are well catered for with facilities to either enjoy your own picnic are order something from the bush kitchen. Two of our favourite spots to stop at in the South are Afsaal and Tshokwane . These locations are easily found on any of the detailed Kruger Park maps available at entrance gate and camps.

At these picnic sites you will find benches with barbecue facilities and toilets.  Every on of these sites has been selected to offer a unique location and the Skukuza day visitor has a fantastic swimming pool, which you can cool off during the summer months.

All of the main camps have both a sit down and take-away restaurant with a variety of menu items to choose from. Menus do cater for vegetarians. You can expect to pay up to R200pp for a full meal.

Where to Camp

Where to stay nearby, how to get there, accessibility, tips for your visit.

Arguably the most famous game reserve in all of Africa, Kruger National Park is a vast tract of land covering nearly 20,000 square kilometers (7,722 square miles), in the northeast corner of South Africa . It spans the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, and runs along the national border with Mozambique. It is the ultimate safari destination for visitors to South Africa, offering day visits, overnight stays, self-drive safaris, and guided game drives.

Kruger National Park was first established as a wildlife refuge in 1898 when it was proclaimed as the Sabie Game Reserve by the president of the Transvaal Republic, Paul Kruger. In 1926, the passing of the National Parks Act led to the merging of the Kruger with nearby Shingwedzi Game Reserve, creating South Africa’s very first national park. More recently, the Kruger became part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, an international collaboration that joins the park with Limpopo National Park in Mozambique  and Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe . As a result, animals can now move freely across international borders as they would have done for thousands of years.

The vast majority of people visit the Kruger to go on safari. You can drive your own car along the well-maintained tarred and gravel roads or book a guided game drive through any of the rest camps. Options for the latter include drives in the early morning, late afternoon, and at night. One of the best ways to experience the park in all its beauty is on foot, either with a guided walk at the camps or on one of the multi-day Wilderness Trails. Four-wheel drive enthusiasts can test their vehicles (and their mettle) on the park’s off-road trails, while mountain biking is offered at Olifants camp. Golfers can even tee off at Skukuza Golf Course , whose un-fenced green is frequently visited by hippo, impala, and warthog.

Kruger also has a fascinating human history, with evidence of people and their prehistoric ancestors living in the region for up to 500,000 years. More than 300 Stone Age archaeological sites have been discovered within the park, while other sites relating to the area’s Iron Age and San occupants also exist. In particular, the Kruger is known for its San rock art sites , of which there are approximately 130 on record. Sites of particular anthropological interest include the Albasini Ruins (the remains of a 19th-century Portuguese trading route), and the Iron Age settlements at Masorini and Thulamela .

TripSavvy / Anna Haines

A safari drive is the main activity at Kruger National Park, and the park’s incredible size means that it spans a number of different ecosystems including savannah, thornveld, and woodland. This diversity creates the ideal habitat for an astounding variety of flora and fauna, including nearly 150 different species of large mammals—more than any other African game reserve. Amongst them are the Big Five safari animals, which are buffalo, elephants, lions, leopards, and rhino (both black and white). The Little Five are also present in the park, and are some of the smallest creatures at Kruger. Other top wildlife sightings include the cheetah, the Sharpe’s grysbok, and the endangered African wild dog. The best time to spot wildlife is in the early morning or late afternoon, while guided night drives provide a unique opportunity to look for nocturnal species .

Hiring a driver or joining a tour group is the best way to explore the massive park, since guides are in communication with each other and can alert one another when there's an animal sighting. You can book a tour through the park itself or contract a private tour guide for more personalized attention. Renting a vehicle and driving yourself through the park is also an option for those who want the freedom to explore on their own.

Best Hikes & Trails

Driving around on a safari sounds like a dream vacation, but embarking on foot through the national park and literally stepping into nature is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. There are several Wilderness Trails that are multi-day hikes led by a local guide, where campers explore the bush and camp out. The hikes move at a leisurely pace, but hikers may be trekking up to 12 miles per day and endurance is necessary.

  • Bushmans Trail : You'll have one of the best chances for getting up close and personal with big game on the Bushmans Trail, especially white rhino. The area is made up of low valleys surrounded by tall rocky hills, providing some excellent scenery while walking. This walk also includes important historical sites, like San cave paintings dating back thousands of years.
  • Napi Trail : The campsite on the Napi Trail is at the confluence of two rivers in the national park, which naturally attracts all types of wildlife who come to drink at the riverbank. One of the best experiences, however, is nighttime as campers fall asleep to the lively sounds of the bush.
  • Sweni Trail : Hike along the Sweni River and you'll come across not just the animals that graze near the water, but their predators as well. Hearing the roars of nearby lions is common once the sun goes down, which you'll be able to hear while stargazing at the night sky.
  • Guided Day Treks : For those who want to hike around without the rustic bush camping experience, you can join a guided hike that leaves in the morning and lasts a few hours.

There are several options for camping at Kruger National Park at over a dozen different campgrounds, ranging from primitive campsites where campers need to pitch their own tent to luxury bungalows and cottages. There are 12 main rest camps at the national park, all of which offer electricity, a camp store, a gas station, laundry facilities, and a restaurant or self-service café. In addition, there are five "bushveld camps" for campers who don't mind trading in the amenities of the main camps for a more intimate and remote experience.

You have to reserve your place to sleep before you arrive, choosing which campground you want to stay in and the type of accommodation you'll be sleeping in.

  • Skukuza Camp : This is the largest campground at Kruger National Park and includes the most services for guests, such as multiple restaurants, a golf course, and the only airport inside the park. There are observation decks around the camp and you're likely to see animals without leaving the grounds—lions and cheetahs occasionally interrupt golfers by hunting prey right on the course.
  • Berg-en-Dal Camp : Berg-en-Dal is one of the most accessible campgrounds as it's only an hour away by car from the major city of Mbombela. The Rhino Trail is a hiking path that goes around the camp and offers great views of wildlife. The campground also has a swimming pool for cooling off after a day of exploring.
  • Bushveld Camps : There are five bushveld camps—Bateleur, Biyamiti, Shimuwini, Sirheni, and Talamati. These are restricted to overnight guests and have fewer facilities than the main rest camps, but they do give guests a unique feeling of remoteness and at night you're more likely to hear the sounds of the park.

There are also 10 private lodges  and three luxury tented camps located on concessions within the park. These are five-star, ultra-upmarket options for those that want to combine days spent game-viewing with gourmet meals, spa facilities, and impeccable service. Whatever accommodation option you choose, booking in advance is essential and can be done online.

  • Skukuza Safari Lodge : Of the high-end lodges, the Skukuza Safari Lodge is the most low-key and more like a hotel than a luxury safari getaway, also making it much more accessible. It's in the same area as the huge Skukuza Campground and near the Skukuza Airport for easy transportation.
  • Lukimbi Safari Lodge : This family-friendly lodge offers the full five-star package. Parents enjoy chef-prepared meals with kid-friendly options, and there's a spa for total pampering. The rooms overlook the nearby river, which is a gathering spot for animals you can see directly from the lodge.
  • Singita Lebombo Lodge : Floor-to-ceiling glass windows, premier bottles of South African wine, and elephants grazing outside your room make the Singita Lebombo Lodge stand out as one of the extravagant places to stay in the whole park.

The Kruger is easily accessible via road for self-drive guests, with tarred roads leading to all nine entrance gates. Make sure to leave plenty of time when planning your journey, as all gates close at night (although late entry may be permitted for a fee). Overseas visitors generally choose to fly into Johannesburg  and then catch a connecting flight to one of four airports. Of these, only Skukuza Airport is located within the park itself, while Phalaborwa Airport, Hoedspruit Airport, and the Kruger/Mpumalanga International Airport are situated close to its boundaries. Daily flights also exist from Cape Town and Durban .

Upon arrival at any of these airports, you can hire a rental car to take you to (and around) the park. Alternatively, some private bus companies organize shuttles between the airports and the park, while those on a packaged tour will likely have their transport taken care of for them.

Visitors with mobility challenges can fully enjoy several areas of the park, including safari drives, camping, and reaching scenic outlooks via accessible boardwalks. However, the facilities vary greatly depending on which area of the park you're in, so take a look at the detailed accessibility guides for each camp area to confirm what is available. Mobility impaired guests who need accommodations in the park can also reserve one of the campsites or bungalows designed with accessibility in mind.

The tour vans provided by the park don't have lifts or ramps to accommodate guests in wheelchairs, but there are multiple providers in the area that are focused on tours for guests with disabilities, such as Epic Enabled Safaris .

  • Early morning and evening are usually when animals are most active, making for the best time to spotting wildlife.
  • Many first-time visitors make the mistake of trying to cover too much ground. Plan out your visit and take your time to explore the park, since slow travel is the best way to see animals. Every camp area maintains a list of areas with animal sightings that's updated daily, so inquire before you set out.
  • Malaria is a common issue when traveling around the bush of South Africa. Take malaria precautions like medication, long sleeve shirts, and insect repellant.
  • Pack a flashlight if you're camping in the park. The campsites are not well-lit and a flashlight is required for walking around after dark.
  • April to September is the dry season and the best time to visit, with warm days and cool nights. October to March is hot and rainy, which brings lush green landscapes that are pretty but make it harder to see animals.
  • No pets are allowed inside the park.

Kruger, South Africa 's first national park, has been part of the national psyche for as long as anyone can remember. The name alone conjures images of crackling braais and campfire tales, of dog-eared maps and inviting dirt roads, and of elephants that are inevitably too close for comfort. For many, it's one of the greatest game reserves on Earth.

Why should I go?

When should i go, how do i see the park, wait, is it dangerous, got it. any other tips.

  • What shouldn't I miss?

Where should I stay?

  • I'm convinced – how do I make this happen?

The park hugs the northeastern boundary with Mozambique, covering an area the size of Wales. And within its borders? The Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard), so abundant that even a first-time visitor can cross them off their list by lunchtime, plus plenty more besides. Here is our beginner's guide to Kruger National Park .

Kruger offers what most others don't: the chance for a DIY safari. Many African national parks are only open to those with the deepest pockets, but partly thanks to its reliable network of roads, Kruger is accessible to all. You can experience it in your own car, in your own time and in your own way, for a fraction of what you'd normally pay in many of Africa's flagship reserves – and nothing beats having a lion at eye level. This is it: an easy, authentic experience of the bush.

The dry winter season (May to August) is best, as the bush is sparse and animals gravitate towards water holes, making them easier to spot. Temperatures also rarely climb above the late twenties during the day, and can be downright chilly at night, so you'll have a gentler introduction to the otherwise blistering African climate.

But there are perks to visiting at any time of year. In summer (November to December), for instance, the bush is lush thanks to heavy rains, the bird population hits the roof and you'll find many of the animals with young. You can't get much cuter than a hyena cub.

Make sure to read our guide to the best time to visit Kruger Park .

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Animals congregate around watering holes in the dry season © WOLF AVNI / Shutterstock

You could join an organised tour in an open safari vehicle, but renting your own car offers much more flexibility. Explore at your own pace, turning off to tackle a muddy loop road or check out a water hole whenever it takes your fancy. Many animals – including African wild dogs – show up anytime and anywhere, and finding them often involves more luck than skill.

When it comes to your car, there are a few things you should know. First, you'll need a credit card, as you can't rent a car in South Africa without one – a lesson you don't want to learn the hard way. Next, go for height over style, as taller cars will help you get a better view over the long grass. A four-wheel drive is a plus (though not essential), as is air conditioning. And finally, get the best insurance you can afford – you never know what'll happen when you meet an elephant.

Always remember that you're driving in the presence of wild animals. Stay in your car, keep your windows up unless you're after a furry passenger, and make sure you carefully follow the other park regulations .

Learn how to act around big game, particularly elephants: give them plenty of room, switch off your engine, stay quiet and never get between an elephant mother and her calf. If you spot any signs of aggression, such as an elephant kicking up dust, flapping its ears and trumpeting, back away slowly, as they can flip cars. If you follow these rules, you'll rarely get into trouble.

Try not to be too ambitious with your itinerary – Kruger is enormous, and distances can be deceptive. Give yourself at least five days in the south, and ten days if you also plan on heading to the wilder north.

When driving, go slow – a car crawling along at 15km/h is the mark of a Kruger veteran. Scour the long grass for a flick of an ear or a swish of a tail and listen for anything unusual, like the crunching of grass underfoot or a tell-tale alarm call. It also pays to know where to look: lions often nap in the shade, while a leopard is unlikely to stray far from cover.

What shouldn't I miss?

A bush walk. This is one of the only opportunities you'll get to head off into the long grass on foot – accompanied by a professional guide, of course. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the park's flora and fauna, and there's always the possibility of bumping into big game.

If that sounds too adventurous, then opt instead for an organised game drive either early in the morning or late at night. You'll have the chance to spot nocturnal animals, including genets, civets and owls, which you wouldn't otherwise see (as self-driving is only permitted in daylight hours). To book, enquire at any of the main camps.

The south of the park is best for first-time visitors as it has the densest population of big game, and there are some drives here you definitely shouldn't miss. First, there's the route from Skukuza camp to Satara: watch the sunrise from the bird hide at Lake Panic, then head north via the southernmost baobab tree. Just before you hit Satara, turn onto the S100 – the park's legendary white lion is most often spotted here.

Another must is the route from Lower Sabie to Tshokwane Picnic Spot. The road winds steadily higher until you reach Nkumbe lookout, where the savanna stretches out below you for miles. This really is one of Africa's great views.

There are 24 fenced rest camps, with accommodation ranging from simple thatched rondavels with communal facilities up to luxury bungalows.

Satara is based in big cat country, and its circular clusters of rondavels are particularly atmospheric when lit by the glow of the braais at night. Skukuza is the park's HQ and has the feel of a small town, while Olifants wins the prize for the best view, looking down over the Olifants River.

For more of a bush feel, try the tents at Letaba , set deep in mopane forest, or Tamboti – this secluded camp is visited nightly by honey badgers and genets, and hyenas often prowl the fence. If that's still not adventurous enough, book to stay at either Sable or Shipandani after hours.

I'm convinced – how do I make this happen?

Accommodation sells out quickly in Kruger, particularly around public holidays, so it pays to book several months in advance. You will also need to pay a daily conservation fee . This adds up quickly, so it's worth investing in a Wild Card if you're staying for a week or longer, which works out cheaper.

There are three main options to get to Kruger: fly to Johannesburg and then drive just over four hours to the park; take an internal flight from Johannesburg to Kruger Mpumalanga airport and then drive an hour; or take an internal flight from Johannesburg straight into Skukuza.

Georgia flew to Kruger Mpumalanga airport with South African Airways, which introduced the new Airbus A330-300 on its daily London-Johannesburg service in 2018. Return flights start from £957.01. For more information, visit flysaa.com .

Visiting Kruger National Park: Everything You Need to Know

Visiting Kruger National Park: Everything You Need to Know

Within my first hour of arriving, we saw three of the Big 5, herds of giraffe, impala, wildebeest, elephants and countless species of birds.

I’ve never experienced game density like that in my life.

I’ve gone on safaris throughout South Africa , Rwanda and Zambia and none of those experiences can compare.

But planning a trip to Kruger isn’t as simple as hiring a car and paying your entrance fee.

Accommodation at the BEST rest camps can book out six months in advance , you’ll need to secure your spot ahead of time for some of the park’s one-of-a-kind activities, and then there are all the things you need to remember to pack.

Here’s a complete guide to visiting Kruger National Park that will help you plan the perfect safari in South Africa!

driving through kruger national park at sunset

Kruger is the largest and oldest national park in South Africa. It stretches across 20,000 square kilometres and borders Mozambique and Zimbabwe .

It’s fucking HUGE.

The easiest way to get to Kruger is to start your journey in Johannesburg. It’s the closest major city and use can catch flights from OR Tambo International Airport to Kruger.

For our trip, we drove up from Cape Town to Kruger and decided to turn it into a massive three-week road trip . However, if you’re short on time, it’s easier to fly into Johannesburg, rent a car and drive straight to the park.

Kruger is only 4.5 hours away from Johannesburg , and you’ll have the option to explore South Africa’s famous Panorama Route along the way!

You can fly directly from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Nelspruit. It’s a short 50-minute flight, and the airport is only a 50-minute drive to Kruger’s Malelane Gate or 1h 30 min to Phabeni Gate.

To find the cheapest flights to Nelspruit, use Travelstart . It’s a local flight comparison search engine and compares prices with all of South Africa’s regional airlines.

Skukuza is a large rest camp inside Kruger National Park. If you’re feeling like a baller, you can fly directly into Skukuza with Airlink from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or Port Elizabeth.

You can pick up a car rental from Avis at the Skukuza rest camp, or if you’re staying at one of the luxury private game reserves in Kruger, you can organise an airport pickup.

Best Time to Visit Kruger National Park

Kruger National Park is a year-round destination. However, you’ll get different safari experiences depending on when you go.

November to March means hot (30° C+) and rainy weather in the park. It’s the best time to visit if you’re a birder as a lot of the migratory birds return with the rains.

The landscape is lush and green, but the dense vegetation will make it harder to spot game even in a high clearance vehicle. On the plus side, you’ll be around for all the baby animals and have more daylight hours inside the park!

The dry winter season from April to October is the best time to go on safari in South Africa . The lack of rain means the wildlife will gather around the watering holes, making it easier to spot everything from the Big 5 to massive herds of impala.

The day temperatures are still warm, but comfortable, and the nights are cool. The only two downsides to visiting Kruger in the winter are that the days are shorter and it’s more expensive as it’s high season.

You’ll also need to book your accommodation at least six months in advance for popular camps like Lower Sabie.

For our South Africa road trip to Kruger National Park, we strategically planned to avoid the June school holidays. This is when the park is at its busiest, and you’ll struggle to find last-minute accommodation.

If you can’t travel around the South African school holidays, try your best to book everything as early as possible. You’ll also want to stay inside the park so you can avoid the long lines in the morning.

Read More:  The Best Time to Visit South Africa

The early mornings and late afternoons are the best times of the day to see animals. Before and after the heat of the day, the bush is at its most active.

You’ll have incredible light for wildlife photos, and the Big Cats will be on the prowl!

For South African citizens, the Kruger Park entrance fee is:

• R93 per adult, per day • R47 per child, per day

For SADC nationals, the Kruger Park entrance fee is:

• R186 per adult, per day • R93 per child, per day

For non-South Africans, the Kruger Park entrance fee is:

• R372 per adult, per day • R186 per adult, per day

If you’re a South African citizen, I highly recommend buying a Wild Card . You can get access to over 80 national parks and reserves in Southern Africa for R640.00 (or R1,055 per couple) for an entire year.

That’s six trips to Cape Point or a week in Kruger!

For internationals, you can get a Wild Card, but you’re going to pay R2,900 (single supplement) or  4,530 (couple) for the same package.

It’s only worth it if you’re planning a South Africa road trip and you’ll be visiting other national parks like Addo Elephant Park , Tsitsikamma or going over the border to Swaziland’s Hlane Royal National Park.

Here are the essentials that you need to pack for a safari trip to Kruger National Park. I’ve got a full packing list coming soon!

• Insect repellent : Trek is the best mosquito repellent I’ve ever used. • Eye drops • Anti-histamines for insect bites • Sunscreen , sunglasses and a hat • Binoculars • Camera gear (I shot with a Canon D700 and a Canon 100-400mm F4.5 ) • Cooler box • Torch or headlamp • A comfy pair of shoes • A reusable water bottle

Car rental: To get the most out of your South Africa safari, you’ll want to rent a high clearance vehicle . A 4×4 is going to help you see wildlife lying down in the grass and give you an advantage with sightings. You’ll also have the opportunity to travel to the north of Kruger which is only accessible by 4×4.

Gate Times: In the summer months (October to March), the gates are open from 5:30 AM to 6:30 PM. In the winter (April to September) the gates open from 06:00 AM to 5:30 PM. From November to January, the camp gates open 1 hour before the entrance gates. You’ll definitely want to stay inside the park if you’re visiting over those months, as the early mornings are incredible for sightings of Big Cats and kills.

Malaria: The national park is in a malaria area, although the risk is low. I’ve never taken malaria pills when visiting the park as I usually go in the dry season when water is scarce. But always consult with your doctor before your trip and get medical advice from a professional.

Get a Map: Due to Kruger’s immense size, you’re going to need to buy a good ol’ fashion map when you arrive. There is no cell service inside the park , and you won’t be able to rely on Google Maps at all. I recommend getting the “ Kruger Park Map & Guide 2nd Edition “. It comes with a map, info on all the camps and a checklist for all the mammals and reptiles!

Fuel:  There are petrol stations at the main rest camps. You don’t need to worry about driving out of Kruger to fill up your tank.

Speed Limits:  There is a 50 km/h speed limit on tar roads and 40 km/h on dirt roads. Make sure you stick to these rules as there are speed cameras and the park loves to set up traps near closing time to catch people racing back to the gates.

Sightings: The best time for sightings is in the early mornings and evenings. The Big Cats are active, and you’ll have beautiful, soft light for photographs!

Shops: You don’t need to pack too much food for Kruger. There are shops at each campsite that have a range of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and bread. You can also buy firewood, biodegradable plates, cutlery, sauces and souvenirs. The shops do accept credit cards, and there are ATMs on site. If you don’t feel like cooking, the main camps have restaurants like Wimpy and Mugg & Bean.

Wi-Fi: The restaurants at the main camps like Mugg & Bean and Wimpy will have free Wi-Fi for guests.

How to Plan Your Self-Drive Itinerary

Due to Kruger’s massive size, you’re not going to be able to see the entire park in one trip. It’s best to pick one area and explore it to the fullest.

For first-timer visitors to Kruger, you should base yourself in the south to increase your chances of seeing the Big 5. It’s easily accessible from Johannesburg, and it’s where you’ll find some of the most popular rest camps like Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge.

Central Kruger is known as Big Cat country. Book a couple of nights at Satara or Olifants rest camp if you want to try your luck of spotting lions sleeping in the grasslands or leopards walking across the road. You’ll also see plenty of herbivores like zebra, buffalo and impala.

If you want to explore northern Kruger, you’ll need a 4×4. As it’s the least popular portion of Kruger, you won’t find many tourists here, and the game density is far less than the south. However, if you don’t mind getting off the beaten track, you’ll find rare birds, and you might spot a pack of wild dog.

Things to do in Kruger National Park

Even if you’re bringing a car to Kruger, you should book at least one guided game drive. The guides know how to read the signs of the bush and speak to each other on the radio.

I’d recommend booking a sunrise drive if you’re a photographer or you hate crowds. We had the entire 20-seater car to ourself and got some amazing photos!

The sunset drive is beautiful, but most of it will be done in the dark. On the plus side, you’ll get to see some of Kruger’s nocturnal animals like African Civet and Bushbabies.

If it’s your first or 100th time in the bush, you should book a walking safari. You miss so much from being inside a car, and you’ll get the opportunity to spot some of the smaller wildlife.

All walking safaris are done with a guide as well as armed rangers.

You can choose from morning and afternoon walking safaris. There are also guided wilderness walking trails that last over a few days.

Book a night or two at Olifants Camp and go on a guided mountain bike trail. There are morning, afternoon or full-day trails that are guided by two field guides.

There are three one-day 4×4 trails inside the park:

Madkabantu Trail: The Madkabantu Trail is made up of three routes. The first one starts at Pretoriouskop (42km), the second begins at Satara (46km), and the last one is from Babalala (49km).

Lebombo Overland Trail: Spending a week in Kruger? Tackle this five-day trail that runs from Crocodile Bridge to Pafuri Gate.

Shingwedzi 4×4 Trail: This trail starts at Pafuri and ends at Giryondo Gate.

Next time I go back to Kruger, I’m booking myself into one of the sleepover hides!

There are two in the park. Sable Dam Hide is near Phalaborwa Gate, and the Shipandani Hide is at Mopani.

You’ll get to spend the entire night camped out in the hide overlooking the dam! It’s a photographers dream and exciting way to observe the wildlife in their natural habitat.

If you’re lucky, you might see a crocodile grab an impala or spot a pride of lions coming down to the waterhole for a drink.

Where to Stay

When it comes to Kruger National Park accommodation, you’re spoilt for choice! There are five-star luxury safari camps, budget-friendly rest camps and plenty of hotels close to the entrance of the park.

You should stay inside Kruger if it’s:

• Your first time • You want to spend as much time in the park as possible • You’re on a budget • You want to go on morning and sunset drives or walking safaris

Best Camps in Kruger National Park

We entered the park via Crocodile Bridge and saw a ridiculous amount of animals within the first hour.

If you’re short on time and only have a weekend to go on safari, stay here or in Lower Sabie and explore as much of the south as possible.

Lower Sabie is one of the best places to stay inside Kruger National Park BUT you need to book at least six months in advance . I’m not even being dramatic. We tried to book in March for June, and there was nothing available.

But we did go on a day drive through Lower Sabie and had lunch at Mugg & Bean. The restaurant overlooks the river, and we saw plenty of animals and birds without needing to drive.

While in the area, we saw a huge pride of lions by the river bed, and there were quite a few sightings of cheetah and leopard in the morning.

Skukuza is the largest park in Kruger. It has a post office, golf course, museum, airport, a bank, restaurants and a swimming pool.

Despite all the activity, there are some excellent drives around Skukuza, and the sightings around the camp are incredible.

Some of the best roads include the H4-1, H1-2, S114 and the S1.

lioness with rhino kill

Satara is Big Cat country. The savannah plains are where you’ll find lions, leopards, and large herds of elephant, giraffe, wildebeest and zebra on the move.

Satara is another popular camp, so you’ll need to book your Kruger accommodation well in advance as well. While in the area, don’t miss out on the famous S100 road!

It winds past the N’wanetsi River, and there are a few loops you can take to try spot a leopard perched in a Knob Thorn or Leadwood tree.

Home to a landscape of granite outcrops, Pretoriouskop is one of the best camps in Kruger to see leopard .

The surrounding area is also where you’ll find sable (we saw a herd cross the road!) and rhino (one walked right past our car at the watering hole!).

Tamboti is one of my favourite camps in Kruger National Park. It’s a small, remote-tented camp with no cellphone signal. Unlike the bigger rest camps, we didn’t see our neighbourhoods and felt utterly hidden in the bush.

After starting our braai, we had a hyena come right up to the gate!

It was a magical and slightly creepy experience! Tamboti is also close to the famous S39 road, which is home to a den of wild dogs.

impala

If you want to stay at any of the rest camps inside Kruger, you can make a reservation through the SanParks website . You’ll be able to pay for your accommodation, conservation fees and book any optional activities like game drives or walking safaris.

You can also book any of the activities once you arrive at your camp!

When reserving your room, try to get a rondavel or a tent right by the fence. It will give you a chance to spot some of the nocturnal animals. If you’re a photographer, you might get lucky with a good spot for some astrophotography !

If you want to spoil yourself, there are gorgeous five-star safari camps inside Kruger. I haven’t stayed at any myself (yet), but here are a few that my friends have gone to over the years and recommend:

• Lion Sands Ivory Lodge and Treehouses • Royal Malewane • Cheetah Plains

There are budget, mid-range and luxury accommodation outside of Kruger. However, if you don’t stay in the park, it’s going to add 20 minutes onto your driving time.

In the morning, you’re going to wait in a long line with other people waiting to pay to get in. You’re also going to spend less time on the road, and you won’t be able to get into the park early enough in the morning for those magical first sightings.

Best Day Drives from Kruger’s Main Camps and Gates

One of the best parts about the Pafuri Gate Day Drive is that it’s not popular. If you come across a sighting, you’ll have it all to yourself!

For birders, you’ll have the chance to spot some rare species that you won’t see anywhere else in Kruger, especially along the Luvuvhu River. The S63 and S64 are some of the best roads for bird spotting in the area!

Orpen is the gateway to lion country in the Kruger. There is an excellent day drive that goes to Satara and Olifants and comes back to Orpen on the S39.

The drive is scenic, and there are fewer obstructions which will improve your chances of seeing a Big Cat!

One of the most popular roads in the area for seeing leopards in the trees is the S92. You can also take the H7 coming back to Orpen in the late afternoon to watch the sunset and hopefully see a cat crossing the road.

lion sitting in the road in kruger

If you’re arriving via the Phabeni Gate, take the S1 towards Skukuza. Along the way, stop at Nyamundwa Dam where you can often see a variety of wildlife like hippo, giraffe, and zebra.

Keep going and turn on the H11. It’s a busy road, but for a good reason! There are usually excellent sightings, and you’re likely to see big herds of elephants, and in the evenings, leopards tend to hang around here as well.

Continue towards the H10 in Lower Sabie. There’s always something to see here whether it’s cheetah, elephant, lion, buffalo or rhino.

Before the end of the day, drive along the H4-1 to Skukuza. It’s another popular stretch of road that’s considered one of the best in the park for Big 5 sightings.

If you’re staying a Crocodile Bridge camp, you can make a loop up to Lower Sabie via Skukuza. You want to plan your drive, so you make it to Lower Sabie’s Sunset Dam for the sunset (obvs).

The dam is always busy, and it’s an excellent place to spot the Big 5, wild dog and other animals.

This Crocodile Bridge drive is one of the best Big 5 roads in Kruger!

Slow down once you get to the open plains before Crocodile Bridge. You might see a cheetah and other Big Cats as the bush starts to come alive at sunset.

Here are some essential photography tips to help you take better photos while on safari:

• Invest or hire a telephoto lens (try to get one with a low f.stop for that bokeh effect) • Use a high shutter speed to minimise motion blur • Use a low ISO (100-200) to minimise grain on your photos • If you’re shooting in low light conditions, you can usually get away with ISO 800 • Use your camera’s silent shutter (if it has one) • Focus on the animal’s eyes.

A Big Kruger National Park Travel Guide: 30 Facts, FAQs, and Tips for Planning Your Own Kruger Visit

book day visit kruger national park

Calling all adventurers and fellow wildlife aficionados! If you've found your way here, you're likely planning an exciting voyage to Kruger National Park, the heart of Africa's untamed wilderness!

Now, let me be honest— I'm not typically a "safari person." The predictability of it all tends to leave me yawning. But Kruger? Well, it's a whole different ballgame. This place, thanks to its jaw-dropping diversity, will keep even the pickiest of travelers (yes, like me) engaged for days on end. My original plan of a modest 2-day visit? It somehow morphed into an exhilarating 4-day adventure in Kruger !

Tip: One day is all you need in Addo Elephant Park , and 2 is the maximum I would’ve been happy with in Etosha National Park in Namibia . So 4 days in Kruger really says a lot about how amazing it is.

Here's the deal: Kruger is a sprawling kingdom of the animals, stretching nearly 350 km (220 mi) tall and 80 km (50 mi) wide . That’s 20,000 km² (8,000 square miles) or almost the size of Israel ! They say, "You can't step into the same river twice," and that couldn't be truer here. There’s just so much ground to cover, you won’t even be able to find the same river twice!

Who is this Kruger guide for?

Animals on the road in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Get ready close animal encounters in Kruger National Park!

Wondering if this guide is your cup of safari tea? Well, if you were looking for a guide that’ll give you plenty of practical information and drop some real-life insider tips , you’re in the right spot. Whether it's your maiden voyage or a grand return to Kruger National Park, this comprehensive guide is crafted to make your experience smooth, unforgettable, and teeming with remarkable wildlife encounters.

I’d like to think this Kruger travel guide is the only one you’ll need. I hate when I have to hunt around the internet looking for forgotten details. So first, we'll tackle the essential FAQs —including those burning questions that might be keeping you up at night (or too excited to sleep). Then, we'll dive into some tried-and-true visitor’s tips , honed from my own experiences at Kruger, and last but not least, I’ll give you some facts about Kruger that’ll be the perfect addition to your mental gear before heading out on your trip.

So, grab your virtual safari hat, adjust those binoculars, and let's Kruger!

1. What's the distance between Johannesburg Airport and Kruger National Park?

Johannesburg in South Africa

The city of Johannesburg

The distance between Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport and Kruger National Park, also known as, is approximately 400 to 500 km (248 to 310 mi) , depending on which part of the park you're heading to. But hold on, don't let those kilometers intimidate you ! Road trips in Africa are an experience in themselves, offering breathtaking landscapes and exciting detours.

Plus, you’ll be driving on the highway almost all the way, and South Africa's highways are generally in good shape , so it’s an easy trip.

Pro Tip : To add extra pizazz to your Kruger journey, consider making a one- or two-day detour—explore the stunning Panorama Route. For more details on this side trip, check out my Panorama Route Guide and Panorama Route 1-2 day itinerary . It's all about making the journey as memorable as the destination !

2. Which is the closest airport to Kruger National Park?

If you're looking to fly into Kruger National Park, the closest airport is Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Mbombela (Nelspruit), also known as KMI Airport. This airport is practically on the park's doorstep (and, as a bonus, very close to the epic accommodation we stayed at and loved: Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge ).

What's fantastic about the airport is that it grants you easy access to the southern part of the park , an area renowned (and I second that tip!) for incredible wildlife encounters. You'll be within a whisker's reach of Skukuza and Lower Sabie , some of my personal favorite parts of Kruger with the best wildlife spotting opportunities.

Pro Tip: Depending on your South Africa itinerary, you could certainly decide to fly into Kruger to save on driving time. I, on the other hand, recommend renting a car in Johannesburg (or “Jozi”, as the locals endearingly call their capital) and making the drive to Kruger. The Panorama Route is right there, people!

3. Can I visit Kruger as a day visitor?

Visiting Kruger National Park, South Africa

I loved driving around Kruger National Park

Yes, you can choose to stay outside of the park and visit Kruger each day as a day visitor. You can self-drive or go on a guided game drive. You will need to take note of gate opening and closing times (see FAQ no. 8 below).

Even as a day visitor, you can use the restaurants and picnic sites around the park. Restaurants are always at the main camps, while picnic sites are interspersed . They’re a great place to stop, which, trust me, you will be happy to do every now and then. Stretching those legs after hours of slow driving feels so good! The picnic sites are well-maintained and well-equipped, too. Some have a shop with food, bbq facilities, and there are even attendants that’ll clean your dishes when you’re done making your food.

Note that park gates have limits on the number of self-driving visitors they let in each day, so you should plan on getting there early if you’re visiting in particularly busy times.

4. How much does it cost to enter Kruger National Park?

For every day you visit Kruger National Park, you will pay the conservation fee of ZAR 460 (USD 24) + 1% community fee for international adult visitors. International kids pay ZAR 230 (USD 12) . South Africans pay ZAR 115, SADC country nationals pay ZAR 230.

5. What animals can I see in Kruger?

Wild animals in Kruger National Park, South Africa

SO. MANY. ANIMALS!

Ah, the stars of the show, the headliners, the real A-listers of Kruger! You want to know who they are? Well, drumroll, please... it's pretty much everyone ! Kruger National Park is one of the best places in Africa to see wildlife, so it’s obvious it won’t just be an elephant here and a wildebeest there.

First up, Kruger is the place to go to see lions . That’s not saying it’s easy to see them, you will need to put in effort and patience, but once you see them strutting their stuff through the savanna like they own the place (which they kinda do), with that classic feline "I couldn't care less about you" look, you’ll feel like you’ve won the safari lottery.

Lions are part of the Big Five , all of which have a home at Kruger National Park: elephants, buffalos, rhinos, and leopards are the other four. Good luck spotting a leopard, though! I also had bad luck with rhinos on my last trip and saw a grand total of 0 specimens.

In total, there are about 150 species of mammals in Kruger ; to mention a few: giraffes, hippos, hyenas, cheetahs, wild dogs, honey badgers, baboons... and don’t forget the hundreds of reptiles, amphibians, and bird species! Who else loves ostriches and snakes? Show of hands?

Antelopes in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Beautiful antelopes just a few meters away...but shhh!

You’ll see such an overwhelming number of impalas, zebras, and antelopes of all shapes and sizes that they end up being almost as interesting to see as a pigeon in your home city.

Remember, how many and which animals you see in Kruger largely depends on how patient you are . Don’t try to cover large distances, your FOMO isn’t going to be cured by jumping from one place to another. There’s nowhere to hurry to, focus on the area you chose and stick to it. Take your time, drive slowly, and keep your eyes peeled. Also, if there are a bunch of cars stopped in front of you, it’s a dead giveaway that there’s something interesting there.

6. Which area of Kruger is best?

I’m guessing you want me to tell you where all the cool animals live , right? Well, they move around, so no complaints if you didn’t see a lion even though “Jan said I would”. But here's the scoop from my multiple Kruger explorations:

The park is massive, and I mean "larger than some countries" massive. And each area has its own variety of wildlife that mostly hang out there. If I’m to be very general, the southern 1/3 of Kruger is your best bet for the most animal sightings. Roughly from Hoedspruit down is where the wildlife action was the best for me every time.

Hotel tip: We stayed in Hoedspruit for our Panorama Route weekend this last trip, but you could very well stay put and enter Kruger National Park from there as well. I wanted to mention this because Little Kubu Lodge in Hoedspruit was one of my top personal favorite hotels in all of South Africa.

Map showing the best areas to spot wildlife in Kruger National Park, South Africa

We always had the best luck in spotting the Big 5 and some of the coolest African animals in the southern section of Kruger. Stay either in Hoedspruit: Little Kubu Lodge or White River: Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge If you’re looking for more specific best areas in Kruger for wildlife spotting , try driving between Orpen>Satara>Lower Sabie and also around Skukuza>Berg-en-Dal>Crocodile Bridge. This is where we had some jaw-dropping encounters with lions, hyenas, cheetahs, giraffes, a bazillion zebras and elephants, and tons more.

Tip: I put together a whole other article about hunting for animals in Kruger (checking them off with a pencil and paper in hand, obviously!) in How to see the wildlife in Kruger?

You'll find mainly savannas and mixed woodlands in these parts, which are the best habitat for the animals we’re all chasing after.

Pro tip: Grab a park map and brilliant guide at the gate. They're gold. You'll find colored zones indicating the type of vegetation you’ll find in each area, which is code for what animals you can expect there. You can check off your sightings in the guide, too. It was like Pokemon Go for me , gotta catch ‘em all ! But I did not. I wasn’t even close, and I spent restless hours trying! Stay in the pink and dark green areas for best results (no guarantees, but those were our hotspots!). Good luck!

7. Which gate is the best to enter Kruger National Park?

Crocodile in Kruger National Park, South Arica

We started from the sharp end—at the Crocodile Bridge

There are so many gates in Kruger National Park (10 in total), it makes it really easy to base yourself almost anywhere and always have a convenient way in as a day visitor . We stayed outside of the park—we were very happy at Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge in White River!—which was a perfect location because it’s in the southernmost section of Kruger aka the best part of Kruger.

We used Crocodile Bridge and Malelane Gates , and it’s easiest to use Orpen Gate if you’re coming to Kruger from Hoedspruit.

One place to avoid is Numbi Gate , which is known as a crime hotspot.

Pro Tip: One thing to note if you’re a day visitor is that gates have a limit on how many people they let in each day, so it’s best to plan on getting there early if you’re self-driving, especially in peak periods and on weekends in general. But if you do end up being turned away, you can still get on a safari game viewing vehicle and see Kruger that way.

8. What are Kruger gate opening times?

Unless you’re staying inside Kruger National Park at one of the camps, you’ll need to drive in and out each day and adhere to gate times. They are strict—if you get caught at the park late, you will be fined. That said, even if you’re staying inside a camp, you’ll still need to be inside the camp gates at certain times, too. Camp gate times are almost the same as general gate opening times except for a couple summer months when they open a little earlier.

Kruger gate opening times:

October–March: 5:30 am

April–September: 6:00 am

Kruger gate closing times:

November–February: 6:30 pm

March and August–October: 6:00 pm

April–July: 5:30 pm

9. What is the best month to visit Kruger National Park?

Animals in Kruger National Park, South Africa

In Kruger National Park there are always animals to see!

I think Kruger is a year-round destination, though the best months to visit are arguably dry season: May to October . I say arguably because unless you’re visiting just Kruger and nothing else, you need to consider the rest of your South Africa itinerary, too. The dry season in Kruger is end of fall through beginning of spring, and that will almost always collide with the best times to visit other parts of South Africa (for Cape Town and Garden Route , for example, you don’t want to be there for winter, when it can rain a lot).

Obviously, there are pluses to visiting in dry season : You get less vegetation, which means the animals are easier to spot since they have less grass and leaves to hind behind. They’re also thirsty and gather around the watering holes a lot, so again—easy peasy wildlife sightings. Then again, it’s peak tourist season , which means traffic jams on self-drive roads.

I’ve been to Kruger National Park in dry and wet seasons and to me, it mattered very little which month I went . I always saw plenty of animals, and if you visit in a wetter month, you’ll get prettier vegetation and spot lots of baby animals. And you know what little fuzzy baby cuties means... predators in action! Sorry, babies, but you’re the easiest to eat.

My last Kruger visit was at the end of wet season, in April, and it was epic . You can see from my photos that there was no absence of animals whatsoever.

10. What time of day will I see the most animals in Kruger?

Sunset in Kruger National Park, South Africa

If you visit Kruger in the evening, you’ll get this beautiful sunset as a bonus

If you want to see the most animals, visit Kruger in all times of the day! We did a couple of evenings, two very early mornings, and a full day, and each time saw different animals. If I were to say when I personally saw the coolest critters, I’d vote for mornings , but your experience can differ. Sunrises and sunsets are known to be when wildlife are the most active, so you’ll need to test out your luck, ideally more than once, to get the most out of your Kruger experience.

We saw lions super close up on our last morning in Kruger. It was spectacular! We watched, almost holding our breath, as a group of lions walked right in front of our car for about 10 minutes. This was right before we headed to catch out flight back to Europe, so it felt like an extra special goodbye .

Tip: Check out my other article specifically about how and where to see the wildlife in Kruger. I even show you my animal checklist and try to tally up our animal sighting for the 4 days we were in Kruger National Park (I’m a little OCD about checklists).

11. How many days should I spend in Kruger National Park?

Giraffes in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger is not like some other safaris that tend to get repetitive really quick. Stay at least 4 days!

If you're contemplating the number of days to invest in Kruger National Park, this is one place you may want to stretch that time budget of yours. If you have 4 days, do 4 days . Two days aren’t enough for Kruger!

Here’s a little tidbit about my last Kruger visit : You see, I'm not your average traveler—I travel fast and cram a lot into my days, because there’s so much to see and so little time! I've got a penchant for covering vast distances, and squeezing as much adventure as possible into every moment.

So, when I initially planned my Kruger escapade, I figured a couple of days should do the trick . Safaris usually get boring for me after two days anyway... But oh boy, did Kruger have a surprise in store for me! What was meant to be a swift two-day trip turned into a glorious four-day safari for me!

Why? Well, because Kruger is unlike any other. The diversity of wildlife and landscapes is astounding, and the thrill of spotting animals in their natural habitat is just irresistible. If you're anything like me (i.e. a little OCD) and possess that nagging obsession to check off every animal in your guidebook , well, four days will barely suffice.

Pro Tip: I’d recommend lots of time for this safari: the sweet spot is 3—4 days in Kruger National Park. We went in in the break of dawn on a couple of days, stayed into the evening on another, and pulled off one very long, full-day tour. Trust me, it’s a lot, so it’s a good idea to give yourself time to rest in between Kruger visits . I can’t recommend Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge enough for this. Not only is it basically a comfortable hotel room that’s outside, but it’s in its own private nature reserve , so you’ll be spotting animals right from your private terrace!

12. Is it safe to self-drive Kruger?

Spotting an elephant while driving in Kruger National Park, South Africa

I like it too, bro. I like it too...

Absolutely, driving in Kruger National Park is as safe unless you do something stupid, like get out of the car near some lions, like that lady I say on Youtube. Seriously?! Darwin’s law I guess.

Kruger has well-maintained roads , clear signage and good maps available, and speed limits that ensure everyone's safety, including the wildlife. That is, if humans adhere to these rules...

It’s not rocket science : Keep your doors locked, windows shut if you see any predators around, and never exit your vehicle unless you're at a designated viewing spot. And remember, these are wild animals, so respect their space. That means no attempting to feed, pet, or take a selfie with them.

I’d say the only danger when driving in Kruger is a sore butt from the hours of sitting in the car driving slowly. I strongly recommend getting a comfortable vehicle, ideally a high-clearance one so you’re up higher off the ground, which makes it easier to spot animals. We had a Toyota Fortuner and it was perfect for a smooth ride (and our tushes were happy, too!).

13. What are the road conditions like in Kruger National Park?

Zebra crossing the road in Kruger National Park, South Africa

Remember, the animals in the park always have the right of way!

The road conditions in Kruger National Park are a pleasant surprise: mostly sealed, with only some sections with gravel, but nothing too bad. All the roads in Kruger are well-maintained, so even though you’re in the wild, you don’t need a mighty vehicle to tame them. Like I said above, I’d suggest a higher 4x4 just for the sake of your own comfort , but it’s not necessary and you’ll do fine even in a sedan.

As someone who's explored Kruger inside out, let me share a tip: slow down . Sure, there is often a 40 or even 50 km/h speed limit , but that just seems crazy to me. There’s nowhere to hurry to! Onthe contrary, driving slow will guarantee you more animal sightings. Trust me; you don't want to speed past a leopard lounging in a tree or a herd of elephants crossing the road because you were in a hurry to get to the next place.

My 9 top tips for visiting Kruger National Park as a day visitor

Tips for visiting Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park

  • Don’t rush, it’s not a race! The animals are not putting on a show for humans, so you’ll need to practice your patience and give yourself time to spot them. The nature isn’t all that interesting, really, so it’s not about covering the most ground. If you are having luck in an area, stay there.
  • Get off the ground ... literally. Rent something big, like an SUV (we were happy with our Toyota Fortuner), so you get a good views from your car. You don’t need a 4x4 to drive in Kruger, but if you’re sitting in a sedan, you might miss some wildlife sightings just because you’re so low to the ground.
  • Mornings beat evenings. At least they did in my experience. Early morning (between 6-9 am) is when we saw the most animals. I’m talking leopards, a pack of hyenas, and we were even able to trail behind lions for 10 minutes, so it was hands down my favorite part of the day.
  • Stay in the south. I want to say that it’s just birds up in the north, but that’s just not true. It’s just that the density of big animals, including predators, is much larger in the area south of Satara.
  • Know where to go . My tried and true highlight routes for a self-driving Kruger trip, where I say the most animals, the most different kinds of animals, and the most lions, are: Orpen>Satara>Skukuza and Lower Sabie>Crocodile Bridge>Berg-en-Dal. Also, get the map and guide at the entrance gate, they are superb (and have an animal checklist).
  • You need more time than you think. Plan for at least 3–4 days. I thought 2 would be good enough but it wasn’t even close. This way, you can combine self-driving and some guided game drives, and see the park in different times of the day.
  • The season doesn’t matter. Dry season is deemed the best, but it’s also the busiest, and from my experience, it makes little difference which month you go to Kruger. Each season has its pluses and minuses, but they all have tons of animals!
  • Stay near Malelane and Crocodile Bridge Gates. These proved to be the best access points for the southern area of the park, with easy and wildlife-abundant drives towards Lower Sabie and Skukuza. We chose Ndhula Luxury Tented Lodge as our base and can’t recommend it enough. It’s in a private reserve of its own, so you’ll see animals straight from your hotel room/tent hybrid. I especially enjoyed the evening bonfires as they had this memorable safari vibe... yes, I talked to strangers and liked it!
  • Don’t worry about food and gas. There are camps all over the park that you can stop by, eat at the restaurants, buy snacks at the shops, and even get gas. There are also many gated picnic areas where you can take a break, eat, stock up on goodies, and even BBQ.

8 Kruger National Park fun facts

Kruger National Park, South Africa

Kruger National Park is a huuuge park

Before you do to Kruger National Park, here are some facts about the park that’ll blow your khakis right off:

  • Location, location, location :  Kruger is nestled along the borders of South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe, giving it access to some of Africa's most diverse ecosystems.
  • Size matters :  Covering a jaw-dropping 20,000 km² (8,000 square miles), Kruger is about the size of Wales, Israel , or the state of New Jersey in the US (but with way more lions). Kruger is really an animal kingdom.
  • It’s old :  Established 125 years ago, Kruger National Park is one of the world's oldest and most renowned game reserves. The park's history dates back to 1898 when the then-president of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger, proclaimed the area as the Sabie Game Reserve. It aimed to protect the region's wildlife from rampant hunting and poaching.
  • What’s in a name : The park’s name was changed in 1926 in memory of Paul Kruger’s role in its establishment.
  • It’s really old : Your great-great-great-...-great grandfather lived and hunted in the Kruger area. Humans have been living here for a million years! Look out for rock art and engravings in the park. Numerous Iron Age sites with relics and artifacts, like pottery and stone tools, have been discovered within the park.
  • UNESCO likes it : Kruger National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2003. It's renowned not only for its diverse wildlife but also for its archaeological sites.
  • Saving the dogs : Kruger has played a vital role in conservation and wildlife research. It's been at the forefront of initiatives to protect endangered species like the African wild dog. Their population has gone from 120 wild doggos in 2009 to almost 400 in 2023!
  • Famous faces :  Nelson Mandela declared Kruger "a priceless asset" in hit speech for Kruger’s 100 th anniversary celebrations. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for us!

How safe is it to travel to South Africa? 61 Safety Tips and Impressions from a White Couple

The question I get all the time is “Is it safe to travel to South Africa?” Hey, we aren’t colorblind here at Next Level of Travel, it’s a thing, ok. Let me give you some tips on how to stay safe in South Africa!

Thoughts? Give us a shout!

About me

Hi! I’m Jan. I live in Prague, Czech Republic. I try to experience the best the world has to offer, and I don’t cease to be impressed. But if I’m not, I’m sure going to tell you! You can count on my full honesty and real opinions here. No bullcrap. I own and run several companies, which gives me great (but not unlimited) freedom to roam the world.

I was first inspired to start this blog by my own experience of researching for upcoming trips—I often struggle with a lack of good information, accuracy, and authenticity of resources. You wouldn’t believe how many “travel bloggers” don’t even visit the destinations they write about!

My goal with this blog is to provide you with complex and practical information so that you can plan your own vacation, complete with insights you’d only get if you visited the place. I also put together itineraries that are fully planned out trip guides.

Another aspect that drives this platform is my curiosity about the history, geography, politics, and economy of each country I visit, so I try to include this information in my articles, too. It’s always great to get the bigger picture, right?

And just to be clear, I am not trying to compete with backpacking blogs or provide hacks for an economical and affordable experience. My vacations follow the standard pattern of traveling by plane, staying in good hotels, and renting a car on the spot to get around. I’m also always up for a fantastic meal, though I don’t shy away from local delicacies and street food, either.

This is for people staying in accommodations outside of the park (Guest houses etc.) or passing thru for a day trip:

South African National Parks (SANParks) has included a new feature in its online bookings portal - pre-booking for DAY visitors. Previously, advanced day visitor bookings could only be done for the Kruger National Park, by contacting the Reservations office.

This new function will enable online users to pre-book their day visitor park permits in a variety of time slots and for several days at a time. “This will alleviate waiting in the queue at park gates and ensure that guests will not be impacted or inconvenienced by the gate permit quotas,” concluded Thakhuli.

This new online feature will aid in securing your spot in the Park during the busy periods such as Easter, school holidays and the Festive Season, offering peace-of-mind that your entry as a DAY visitor to the Park is guaranteed.

Guests are able to book a permit/permits online for a specific time slots such as

• Entry from gate opening time (depending on the season) to two hours after the gate has opened.

• Two to four hours from the gate opening time.

• Four plus hours from the gate opening time.

Kruger National Park is easily one of the world’s greatest game parks.  It’s known for its professional management of wildlife, nature conservation, and safeguarding of African cultural heritage.  It’s developed significantly since it was officially opened as a park in 1927 but the history goes far before that.

There’s evidence that prehistoric man roamed the region and that leading into the Stone Age and Iron Age where there are actually a number of archeological sites and cultural artifacts discovered on that same land.

In 1898, The Sabie Game Reserve was established with the thanks of Paul Kruger who wanted a way to preserve the wildlife in the region which was dwindling in population because of excessive hunting.  In 1902, the first warden was appointed and his name was James Stevenson-Hamilton with nickname “Skukuza” which means “he who sweeps clean” because of the work he did to eliminate poaching in the area.  Finally, in 1926, the Parliament passed the National Parks Act and various game reserves were merged to create Kruger National Park before opening in 1927 to the public.

Deciding where to stay in Kruger

This can be an incredibly complicated answer but if we’re taking this from the perspective of 1) This is your first time in Kruger and 2) You have limited amounts of time, your choices are going to start narrowing down to where it becomes much more manageable.

Kruger is massive.  Take a look at this map and you quickly realize that there’s no way you can even see 10% of the park in one trip. It’s so huge that it borders Zimbabwe in the north and and is right along the western border of Mozambique.

whole map of kruger national park in south africa

In a nutshell, Kruger is comprised of several main gates.  You’ll see those marked in green and these are the entrances where you can .  Then you have the rest camps which have a varying mix of facilities such as restaurants, cafes, gas stations, and accommodations.  These camps are gated and will naturally be your base of operations.

The question I asked was “where do first timer’s go?”  You’ll notice the large cluster of gates and camps in the south and that’s not an accident.  It’s the easiest to get to and more popular because this area is known to have a higher concentration of wildlife because the southern park has higher rainfall.  I’m not going to guarantee it but you will most likely be exploring Kruger from Orpen Gate and below.

A big part of it was logistics because I knew that I wanted to do a private reserve and self-drive in Kruger.  For me it was about how could I combine my loop without going really out of the way and also what were the availabilities of the camps in Kruger and Elephant Plains.

The truth is, you really can’t go wrong no matter where you go.  If you’re going to be focusing on the south, as you most likely will, the wildlife that you’re able to see will be very similar.  Ultimately, it’s really luck that you need on your side and good eyes.

It’s hard to understand which rest camp to pick without actually being there but if I can simplify things for you, here are questions you want to ask yourself and points to consider:

  • Where you stay in Kruger will determine the roads that you explore and you won’t go as far as you think you will so in a way you want to pick carefully.
  • Each rest camp differs quite drastically with the number of services they offer (i.e. restaurants, cafes, gas station), types of accommodations, size, and in general how modern they’re developed
  • Focusing on accommodation, the bungalows were very different in style so if you have specific needs such as an indoor kitchen vs outdoor kitchen, availability of BBQ, and overall size, you’ll need to do your research
  • Camps offer different activities so this could sway your decision
  • Which gate you plan on entering in from will likely determine where you start or perhaps it’s the other way around.  For instance, Berg-en-Dal and Crocodile Bridge rest camps are the main ones to south but if you’re planning to enter through the west you’re likely looking at Pretoriuskop or Skukuza.

My recommendations for where to stay in Kruger

skukuza accommodation comunity

It might be easiest if I go through my decision making process and hopefully yours is relatable.

Trip parameters

  • Only have 3 nights to work with so off the top I knew that at a maximum I really only wanted to try two rest camps.
  • We would be finishing with the Panorama Route before heading into Kruger so this put is closer to Paul Kruger gate.  It did not make sense for us to start in the most southern part of the park.
  • We weren’t exactly looking for an extremely rugged bushveld experience but if one was available, I would consider it
  • Bungalows that had their own private bathrooms were key given that this was our honeymoon and there was no way we could do camping.

Picking our rest camp

  • From everything I read, Skukuza is the biggest rest camp with the most amenities.  Now we didn’t care for the golf course that’s there but we knew there was the biggest park shop for supplies and several options for meals whether it be quick lunches or proper sit-down meals.  It also didn’t hurt they have a great view of Sabie River that runs in front of it.
  • Skukuza just made sense as a place to start because it seemed like a really comfortable place to get acclimated to how Kruger works and the game sightings in the area looked quite appealing as well
  • Not wanting to move right away, we decided to start with 2 nights here
  • With 1 night left, I started looking at bushveld camps with their cottages and safari tents but availability was looking slim
  • Satara was in the mix but it was quite the long drive north when moving camps and it would also take a long time to exit the park on our last day
  • Ultimately Lower Sabie just seemed to keep things simpler and I liked the set up of the camp with really good views of Sabie River

What if we started with Kruger straight from Johannesburg?

This is a valid point because our driving routes would’ve been different.  If this was the case, I probably would’ve picked Berg-en Dal or Crocodile Bridge camps to start since it would’ve made more sense to enter the park from the south.

Using the SAN Parks booking system

driving suv in kruger national park

The South African National Parks (SAN Parks for short) surprised me by having a pretty in depth booking system online.  The good news for everyone is that you can book your entire Kruger National Park experience online.

South African National Parks booking system

Thankfully the system is relatively easy to navigate and makes sure you don’t do anything stupid.  It’s smart enough to know that you can’t book an activity unless you already have an accommodation booking in the camp and the data is real time.  It tells you exactly how many spots are left.

There’s a but of course.  As nice as it was to have this online system, it’s not the most user friendly especially if you’ve never been to Kruger.  Here’s what you can expect.

Too many options

kruger online booking system for activities

While I now understand what’s going here, if you’re looking at this for the first time, you’re probably wondering what the difference is between Sunrise Drive V1, V2, and V3 and likewise for the Night Drive and Sunset Drive.  The codes just add to the confusion.

For the activities, these are just all the same thing but they’ve got 3 safari trucks available because they know there are a lot of people wanting to do these trips.

What are these accommodations actually like?

kruger online booking system for accommodations

This is the most frustrating part.  The booking system does a terrible job at showing you what the accommodations look like.  You need to do your research outside of the website to figure out what each of the bungalows are like.  When you hover over each one, all you get is a tiny thumbnail and basic description that it really doesn’t help at all.

Like the activities, you’re also overloaded with too many choices as they list out every single combination and permutation and their individual codes.

I got so fed up that I just randomly picked one.

cute baby hyenas

Other things you need to know

  • A 1% community fund is added to all transactions
  • Daily conservation fee is quite substantial so expect that to be added to your total.  At the time of writing, this was R328 for adults and R164 per day.  You have the option to pay this online with your booking or in-person.  It’s probably easier to just take care of it all in one go online.
  • Double check before you book because the cancellation fees are quite harsh
  • Full payment is required via credit card
  • Check-out time is 10AM and check-in time is 2PM
  • Email confirmations will be sent out after every change
  • An email package containing a set of PDFs will be sent as well which includes an indemnity form.  You can have it filled out ahead of time or just fill one out when you sign-in
  • No liquor is allowed to be brought into the park

Travel Tips – Unless you’re really not sure what your schedule is going to be like, I’d try to book as much as you can ahead of time because things sell out quickly.  You also don’t want to have to be worrying about this stuff and going to the reservation office while you’re there.

How self-drive safari works

full line of elephants in the bush in kruger

Remember those choose-your-own-adventure books where you were making decisions about where your character should go or what they should do next?  The self-drive safari in Kruger National Park is kind of like that.  There are a bunch of different roads to choose from and every day you pick where you want to go.  Some roads will have nothing to see and others will yield some incredible sightings.  You just never know!

typical roads at kruger

I recommend picking up a Kruger National Park guide book that they sell in all of the gift shops.  They come with detailed maps that mark all the tarred (paved) and dirt roads.

How to have better chances to spot wildlife

skukuza gate open and closing times

The key to success here is to wake up early and be ready to drive out of the gate right when it opens.  This is when a lot of animals are still quite active as the temperatures are also much cooler.  November – January, the gate opens as early as 4:30AM so plan to be out until 10 to 11AM.

While the sun is on full blast in the afternoon, the temperatures rise so high that all the animals duck for shade and so your chances of seeing anything are pretty small.  We did it on one occasion and we mostly just saw elephants hiding under trees.  The afternoon is a great time to grab lunch and rest at camp.

Plan to head back out by 3-4PM again as the sun starts to lower.  Animals start coming back out again and so maximize what time you have left until your gate closes.  This could be as late as 6:30PM.  Once the gates close, you’re not able to head back out.

Travel Tips – Waterholes can sometimes be a goldmine for sightings because animals small and large head there to hydrate or hunt their prey.  It’s always worth swinging around there.  Some may be empty but some may surprise you.

using latest sightings app in kruger

Travel Tips – Download the Latest Sightings app ( iOS / Android ) which is crowdsourced by people that are in the park.  The app can be a bit clunky but it’s neat to see it all come in live.  Of course, every time I opened the app and saw big sightings, we were never close to the area so it’s hit or miss.

Activities available at each rest camp

morning bushwalk rangers

Each rest camp offers their own set of activities for guests and you’ll want to take advantage of them while you’re there.  Keep in mind though that you can only book these activities if you’re actually staying in the rest camp that’s offering them.

The one activity I do recommend that you do is the morning or afternoon walk .  It’s one of the few ways you can actually walk in the park.  It’s fully guided with two armed rangers and kept in small groups of 8 or less.  Sure, you probably won’t see any big animals (you really don’t want to encounter any) but it was an incredibly way to see the landscape up close, immerse yourself with the African bush, and learn quite a bit from the commentary from the rangers.

Game Drives

kruger game drive safari trucks

I was a little disappointed with the sunset drive and night drive that we did however I think a lot of that has to do with us having come from a private reserve.  If you’re only doing Kruger National Park, I still think the drives are a great way to see animals because they can communicate with other park drivers and lock in on sightings.  The night drive is hit or miss but in our case we got to see two lions hanging out on the road so that was pretty amazing.

arms resting on safari truck

Why were we disappointed?  It starts with the boarding of the buses.  They’re of coursed fully booked and you quickly learn that it’s a free for all and “fend for yourself” kind of system.  When the ranger comes out, everyone rushes in and tries to get checked-in as soon as you can.  Everyone knows that having a good seat matters on these drives.  It was way too stressful .

ranger guide sunset game drive

The commentary wasn’t particularly riveting and if you sat near the back, you could barely hear anything.  It also didn’t feel like the spotter was working particularly hard to spot wildlife but perhaps we just weren’t as lucky.

You also have to remember that this is a big truck and so what that means is that somebody’s going to have either a head obstructing your view or a tree.  The driver tries their best to change the angles of the truck and move backwards of forwards to give everyone an equal chance but I felt like it was always biased towards the front.

night drive spotted wildlife

Lastly, the night drives depend on passengers to shine the flood light.  This puts too much reliance on the passenger to know what to do.  On the one drive we were on, the person manning the light was either passing out or didn’t care to shine it at the right angle the driver wanted.  It was frustrating to say the least.

It should also be noted that there are some interesting multi-day activities as well that include Olifants River Back-pack Trail, Wolhuter Wilderness Trail, Bushman Wilderness Trail, and more.

Travel Tips –  The best seats are the ones near the entrance steps into the truck.  I like this spot mainly because you don’t have a row of heads in front of you to potentially obstruct your view and if you need to move out to the entrance steps, you can get there quickly.  The worst seats is the back row where you’re sandwiched in and very hard to get a good view.

Review of Skukuza

You can say that the Skukuza rest camp is the capital of Kruger National Park.  It’s the largest camp and has the most complete collection of facilities.  As a result I found that this was the most beginner-friendly of all the camps.  While the grounds are large, the layout is easy to navigate and everything you need, they have.

Another reason why it’s so popular is because of all the wildlife that can be spotted in the area.  It’s in the heart of Big 5 territory so your chances of seeing something exciting are quite high once you exit the gates.

Key Features

  • Wide variety of accommodation types
  • 9 hope golf course
  • Amazing riverside walks and wilderness hikes
  • High chances of spotting the Big 5 here

book day visit kruger national park

Once you enter the camp, you’ll find all the administrative offices to the left that reminded me of a city hall.  It’s in these collection of buildings where you check-in, make bookings and also where you’ll find the post office and bank.  Conveniently located at the entrance is also the gas station.

Drive further and you’ll find a large parking lot to gain access to the main cluster of facilities that include the shop, restaurants, and cafeteria.

From there Skukuza extends to the left and right with additional facilities such as the auditorium/conference centre and all of the accommodations and campsites.

skukuza free wifi hotspot by cattle baron

This is the one of the few camps that have free wifi .  It’s located at the back of Cattle Baron towards the river where you’ll find a mini internet cafe and lounge chairs.

A nice feature to the the rest camp is that you have an unfenced view of the river.  You’re freely able to walk along the pathway that runs left to right of camp.  It’s a great place to grab a seat on one of the many benches to read a book and catch wildlife passing through on the other side.

book day visit kruger national park

The gift shop is the largest and most thorough of the two rest camps we visited.  Not only does the shop have all the customary souvenirs, you’ll also find a mini supermarket here for those looking for on-the-go-food or supplies for cooking.   There’s a small pharmacy of basic meds if you’re looking for that.  Lastly, all the camping supplies you might need can also be found here so you’re covered if you’ve forgotten anything.

Travel Tips –  You can purchase Vodacom top up vouchers at the gift shop.  Just ask the cashier and they’ll be able to print them for you.

Restaurants

book day visit kruger national park

A big bonus for Skukuza is the fact that they have so many food options.

The main restaurant is Cattle Baron.  Think of this as a proper sit-down restaurant serving dishes like steak, fish, and pasta.  This is also the restaurant that has the buffet breakfast every morning.

Also run by the restaurant is more of a cafeteria-style restaurant where you get in line to order fast-food items such as sandwiches and salads.  You wait by the restaurant and when it’s ready they’ll call your number.

By the river is a platform above the river that’s an extension of Cattle Baron but mainly for casual drinks and meals as well.

Skukuza is unique in that it has its own 9-hole golf course.  You can also book a number of activities that are run every day including:

  • Morning/afternoon bush walks
  • Sunrise or sunset safari drives
  • Night drive

Accommodation types

In Skukuza you’ll find camp sites, 21 furnished safari tents, bungalows, cottages and 4 guesthouses.

Here are the notable facilities at Skukuza rest camp:

  • Post Office
  • Public Telephone
  • Car Rentals
  • Gas Station
  • Restaurants + Cafeteria
  • Auditorium and Conference Facilities
  • Internet Café
  • Communal bathrooms/showers
  • 2 swimming pools in camp (for overnight residents only)
  • Shop (gifts, groceries, camping supplies)
  • Communal Kitchens
  • Basic First Aid Assistance
  • Cellphone reception

LR2W Riverside Bungalow

book day visit kruger national park

There are quite a number of variations of bungalows, each with their own designation code in the booking system.  The particular one that we had was the LR2W Riverside Bungalow and it really is just the standard bungalow except it faces the Sabie River so there’s a small increase in nightly rate.

The Skukuza bungalows are in the rondavel style which means they are circular huts outfitted with an outdoor kitchen, two single beds and private bathroom.  Without going for the larger cottages and guest houses that are meant to house more people, the bungalows are your best balance for price, comfort, and size.

Each bungalow has a parking spot next to it so you’re guaranteed a place for your car.

The bungalows themselves do show some age so don’t expect them to blow your expectations in any way.  There isn’t an incredible amount of space but for two people it’s just enough and seeing as you’ll only be in the bungalow to nap or sleep, you really don’t need too much.

Inside the bungalow you’ll also also find air condition and an old school TV hanging on the wall but it’s unlikely that you’ll be using it.

The outdoor kitchen is unique in that there’s a full-sized fridge, stove, and pots and pans but all the cabinets are locked up and the fridge has its own metal cage around it.  For those staying in Kruger a long time, it makes sense to use the kitchen but for anyone focusing on safari in Kruger for a few days, you’ll likely won’t get too much use out of the kitchen.

I would equate the bungalows at Skukuza to a small motel so go in with that expectation in mind.  The rondavel style architecture is unique to the locale and has everything you need for a comfortable night’s sleep.

Review of Lower Sabie

Lower Sabie is really a miniature version of Skukuza with a great vantage point over the Sabie River and high chance of animal sightings.

  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Drives in a lot of animals throughout the year
  • Family oriented camp
  • Attracts many varieties of bird species

From the parking lot, there’s essentially a long walkway that takes you down to the restaurant and viewing platform above the banks of the Sabie River.  Along the way is the main reception building for check-in, post box, and gift shop.

Near the entrance is also a gas station.

One thing you’ll notice that stands out with Lower Sabie are the large green spaces that is set up amongst the accommodations and the main facilities.  These green lawns also feature giant sycamore fig trees which is why it attracts so many birds.  You also get a nice view of the river including the other side but there is a fence in place which obstructs your view so in that way, the boardwalk of the rest camp is not as nice as Skukuza.

The gift shop at Lower Sabie is a fraction of the size what is at Skukuza so as you’d expect there’s slightly less selection.

The restaurant/cafeteria/cafe is operated by Mugg & Bean which is a popular chained cafe in South Africa.  This is more full-service than most but it gives visitors an option of grabbing a coffee or quick sandwich to go or sit down and have a proper meal.

The food they serve is equivalent to something like a Denny’s or Applebees but the pricing is quite reasonable.

The best part about the restaurant is the viewing deck.  It can get windy there at night but during the day, there’s an opportunity to see a ton of action on the river and on the banks of the other side.

On our last day, we saw numerous hippos wading in the water and a male lion passing through as if to say goodbye to us.

smaller safari trucks at kruger for bush walks

Lower Sabie offers a number of activities but note that typically there is only one truck for each activity type which is different from Skukuza which typically runs 3 trucks per activity.

At Lower Sabie, you’ll find luxurious guesthouses, family cottages, huts, bungalows, safari tents (including semi-luxury 2-bedded tents) and campsites.

Here are the notable facilities at Lower Sabie rest camp:

  • Public Telephones
  • Clinic and Basic First Aid Assistance
  • Restaurant/Cafeteria/Cafe
  • Swimming Pool
  • Emergency Road Service
  • Petrol/ Gas Station
  • Cellphone Reception
  • Communal Kitchens & Ablutions
  • Limited DSTV only available in Guest Houses
  • Separate Day Visitors Picnic Area and swimming pool on perimeter of camp

BD2 Bungalow

book day visit kruger national park

I was looking for an accommodation in a similar class to the LR2W Bungalow at Skukuza and it looked like the Bungalow was the way to go once again.

While the accommodation essentially got us the same type of amenities such as our own private parking spot, kitchen, private bathroom, two single beds, and TV, the architecture and layout of this bungalow was completely different.  As if built in a totally different time, this was not in the rondavel style and instead in a more modern cottage floorplan.

You enter in through the front screen door and you’re immediately in the kitchen (yes this one’s actually indoors). You then go through another door and this is the bedroom.  Go through another door at the back and you’re in the bathroom with separate subdivided sections for shower, toilet, and sink.

Overall, I’d say the bungalows in Lower Sabie is more spacious and modern.  It was definitely a nice bonus that the kitchen was inside as it did feel a little awkward to have to keep going in and out to access things.  That’s why we were more comfortable with buying a few Savanah Dry’s at the gift shop to drink in our bungalow.

The bungalows also have their own circular BBQ charcoal grill if you so choose to use.

Everything Else

There are few things that I wanted to cover that didn’t make sense in any of the other sections so let’s dive right in.

Check Out Process

lower sabie key box for check out

This is super easy.  Check out times at all camps is 10AM.  When you’re all packed up and good to go, you don’t need to go to the registration office.  Simply drop the keys in the box as you exit the gate and that’s it!

Power Outlets

power outlet on safari truck in kruger

In each of the bungalows that we had, there were just enough outlets to work with to charge our gear either throughout the day or in the evening.  Skukuza’s bungalows were a bit smaller and so they actually had a power bar for the TV.  I unplugged all the things that were connected to it and used it to plug in all of my devices instead.

You’ll also be surprised to hear that there are some outlets on the large safari trucks at Kruger.

Do you have any questions that I haven’t touched on here?  Make sure to drop a comment down below and I’ll make sure to get back to you right away.

4 -night itineraries.

A 4-night visit to Kruger is superb – it means you can explore a large area of the park but don’t have to rush around too much or change camp every night if you don’t want to.

These itineraries focus on those who do want to change camps frequently to explore lots of different habitats, while those looking for a stay at a single rest camp can read through the various rest camp profiles in this section of the KrugerExplorer App to learn more and decide which is the best fit for their interests.

The Southern Kruger Explorer

Rest camps: Satara (1-night), Lower Sabie (1-night), Skukuza (1-night), Berg-en-Dal (1 night)

Perfect for… A magical tour of some of Kruger’s premier wildlife viewing areas

We kind of had to name one itinerary after the App!

This is a wonderful tour of the southern half of Kruger, taking in a great diversity of habitats and some of the very best game viewing areas of the park.  But don’t forget, these itineraries are just suggestions – if changing camp every night it too hectic for your perfect Kruger experience, then just get in touch via the link at the end of this itinerary and the team can help you book something that has a slower pace…

Enter Kruger via Orpen Gate, which is the closest entrance to Hoedspruit, one of the main Kruger gateway towns.  Heading towards Satara along the Orpen to Satara  route, there are a multitude of excellent game viewing roads, dams and waterholes to explore, and if time allows then a drive along the famous S100 road before sunset is essential!  Accommodation is at the lovely Satara rest camp, one of the best to hear nightly quarrels between nearby laughing hyenas and roaring lions…!

Today is all about the route Satara to Lower Sabie , starting with the S100 and then heading through varied grassland and bushveld habitats that host the Big 5 and much more, before reaching the Nkumbe hills and their astonishing views across the epic savannah.  Finally, you will reach the mighty Sabie River, which supports some of the greatest densities of wildlife anywhere in Africa.  Finish with a visit to the Sunset Dam before retiring to the Lower Sabie rest camp and its breathtaking views over the Sabie.

You may also want to arrange a night drive here, with many of Kruger’s elusive nocturnal cat species being well represented in the local grassy plains to the north of the rest camp.

The Sabie River will be at the heart of all your game driving today. Make sure you check what’s happening at the Sunset Dam and Sabie River bridge crossing, before making your way along the river towards Skukuza.  The Big 5 and more are resident in excellent numbers along the Sabie and the variety of mammals and birds that you can tick off is extraordinary.  Finishing at the world-famous Lake Panic Hide is the perfect way to end a hopefully memorable day.  Accommodation is at Skukuza rest camp, the largest in Kruger.  Enjoy a braai or visit the excellent Skukuza Cattle Baron restaurant with its stunning views over the Sabie River.

Starting the day in Skukuza means you have the day ahead to explore the southwestern corner of Kruger. The Great Gates Loop  takes you through a mix of habitats and allows for another stop at the Lake Panic Hide. Heading south later on, the two main roads towards Berg-en-Dal are excellent for apex predators while the Biyamiti Weir is a wonderful eye-level waterhole.  The final stretch takes you into the mountains of the Drakensberg escarpment – seeing an elephant near the peak of a mountain really is one of the more unusual safari experiences!  The rest camp is the secluded Berg-en-Dal, which is perched in the hills, overlooks a dam and has a lovely birding walk route.

The Berg-en-Dal rest camp is close to the Malelane Gate for those needing to make a quick departure, but for those with a little time, exploring the mountain roads and the Biyamiti Weir area can prove extremely rewarding before leaving the park.

Adventures in Kruger’s Tropical North

Rest camps: Mopani (1-night), Shingwedzi (2-nights), Punda Maria (1-night)

Perfect for… Remote habitats, rare species & stunning scenery

The north of Kruger is much less explored than the south.  The open vistas and epic scenery can give you a wonderful sense of solitude and private wildlife encounters.  The climate also changes in the far north of the park, reaching tropical latitudes and offering unique and astonishingly beautiful habitats, rare species and some of the very finest birding in the park, in addition to most of the mammal predators and herbivores found in the south.

If you’re looking for a remote wilderness adventure, then the north of Kruger could be for you…!

The first night’s accommodation is at Mopani, so entering the park via the Phalaborwa Gate is the most convenient option.  Following the H14 section of the The Phalaborwa Region  route, you traverse bush that offers a good amount of elephant, leopard and wild dog sightings as well excellent birding and dramatic views into the local river ravine.  If you have time, a visit to the Shipandani Hide to see the resident hippo pod, crocodiles and a wide variety of water birdlife is a must. Enjoy a cold drink at the Mopani rest camp restaurant, perched on the hills with spectacular views over the Pioneer Dam down below.

The remoteness of the north means there are some long game drives involved, but they consistently traverse outstanding nature habitats and offer excellent sightings. Today is one of those days but you will be exploring the S50 road – one of Kruger’s best kept secrets…!

The morning is all about looking for rare species on The Nshawu Plains  route to the east of Mopani rest camp; these are some of the best roads in Kruger to find cheetah, roan and tsessebe as well as many other large mammal species coming in to drink on these marshy expanses.

Heading north on the Mopani to Shingwedzi  route takes you past mountains, big dams and onto the Shingwedzi river which supports much of the wildlife in this region.  The close bush along the road can offer many close-up sightings and the open riverbed and drinking hole views mean you can sit and watch the wildlife coming and going for hours.  Expect to tick off a great variety of species in this area of the park, including some of the rarer antelope.

The night’s accommodation is at Shingwedzi rest camp, which has stunning views over the riverbed, including from the tarred approach road which is one of the very best in the park for lions and a variety of species of eagle.

The morning is the perfect time to explore the wonderful _Red Rocks Road_ route, which winds and meanders along a river that hosts an incredible abundance of wildlife.  This is probably the best place in the area to spot a leopard, while lions and elephants are frequently encountered here.  After lunch, try the Babalala Loop route to the north, which traverses different habitats again and is particularly good for spotting uncommon bird species. The accommodation is a second night at Shingwedzi rest camp.

Leaving Shingwedzi behind, the morning is a long drive to the enchanted fever tree forests of the Pafuri region on the northern borders of the park.  The Pafuri area is a floodplain of the Luvuvhu River and has a tropical climate.  This is one of the premier birding areas in the entirety of South Africa and is one of the most stunningly beautiful places one could imagine. The vivid fever tree forests, winding river and incredible array of animals creates a magical feel and a unique atmosphere that will live long in the memory.

Returning south towards Punda Maria rest camp includes passing waterholes that offer some of the best game densities in the north of Kruger.  In the afternoon, taking a very slow drive around the Dimbo Hill & the Mahonie Loop  route will reveal an incredible diversity of bird species, rare antelopes and, with some luck, close encounters with the Big 5 (including the big cats!).

During the evening, the accommodation is at Punda Maria rest camp.  This camp has a nice walking loop where you will probably get close to the camp’s resident bushbucks, and don’t forget to check out the camp’s floodlit waterhole that sees an incredible diversity of wildlife visit to drink throughout the night.

The nearest park entrance is Punda Maria gate and is only a short drive from the rest camp.  If you have more time to get to your next destination, you could take the long route south and leave the park via the Phalaborwa Gate, but do make sure you give yourself enough time to get to the next stage of your plans.

This African National Park Is The Perfect Spot To View A Wide Array Of Wildlife

O ne of the first things that likely comes to mind when thinking about Africa is the continent's wildlife. After all, "The Lion King" has brought in $1 billion for Disney, not to mention other popular animal-centric films like the "Madagascar" film series and "Out of Africa." Africa's wildlife has made for a significant safari tourism industry in multiple countries on the continent, especially those with vast swaths of savanna where you can find dozens if not hundreds of animal species for which the continent is famous.

Kruger National Park is the largest national park in South Africa. It also has the most biodiversity out of all of Africa's parks. The top things to see here are the Big 5: lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, and buffalo. Nowadays, their draw is not so much due to how difficult and dangerous they are to hunt, but in how exciting it is to view these megafauna animals in general. Kruger is also home to wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, antelopes, hippos, hyenas, and dozens more.

Book Transportation, Lodging, And Tours Ahead Of Your Visit

Shuttles from Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) to Kruger National Park depart regularly, but these must be booked in advance with the South African National Park website . Lodging at Kruger National Park ranges from camping to glamping . Visitors can go online to reserve camping spots, cottages, and even luxury suites. Though it is possible to drive yourself through the park, there are multiple options for guided tours.  Siyabona Africa Safari offers both self-driving and guided tour packages for one day or even five days in the park. Sentashya Safaris  has similar options and will even pick you up from your lodging accommodation.

Many of the animals including the Big 5 in Kruger National Park are experiencing concerning drops in population. Though tourism throughout the African continent has shifted away from hunting, it continues to be an issue for wildlife in Africa, as is habitat loss. Game reserves and national parks like Kruger may eventually be the only places where most of these endangered animals — especially the critically endangered rhino — exist at all. Whether you go on safari in Kruger or not, research how you can help endangered animals all over the world.
