THUNDER DRAGON Bhutan Adventure

November 11 - 24, 2024.

There are few destinations in this world where a sojourn is guaranteed to be a truly life-changing experience. Bhutan is one of those places. Completely inaccessible to outsiders until the 1970’s, the Kingdom’s cultural and environmental heritage are even to this day safeguarded by the government’s policy of limiting tourism to relatively few high-quality visitors. This is your invitation to be among the lucky ones to connect to, participate in, interact with, and be forever transformed by an incredibly beautiful people, culture, and enchanting land. Quite a Dzong You’ve Got There!

One of the features that makes Bhutan so unique are the massive, fortified structures called Dzongs, which were originally created to protect against invasions from Tibet in the north and encroachments by British colonialists from India in the south. These ancient walled compounds follow strict formats in their construction, including building without the use of iron nails. Another unique feature of Bhutan is the close cooperation between leaders of State and those of the Buddhist religion. Each Dzong is the seat of religious and administrative affairs in each province. The constitution sets forth a policy of Gross National Happiness, and the High Lama and the King work together to bring that policy to fruition. We visit several of these incredibly beautiful Dzongs during our tour, including the Punakha Dzong shown here.

Immerse Yourself In Nature's Splendor

Everywhere we turn we are met with jaw-dropping views like this one of the Phobjikha Valley carved out by glaciers millennia ago. We explore this valley in quest of spotting the Long-Necked Cranes, who winter here after braving the treacherous migration over the high Himalayas from their summer nests in Tibet. We offer day hikes to amazing vantage points without the rigors of overnight camping, and a half-day of river rafting at the Punakha Dzong adds to our diverse set of unforgettable adventures in this heavenly paradise on earth.

South India Update

Colorful Masked Dances

A highlight of our tour is attending the opening day of an annual festival in the Bumthang region. Here we are mesmerized by the swirl of colorfully clad and masked male dancers who spin in slow, trance-like circles to the sound of drums and classic Bhutanese instruments. These are incredibly joyful gatherings, attracting locals from all parts of the country, and provide us with wonderful opportunities to chat and make friends.
