The 12 Best Websites for Finding Cheap Car Rentals [2024]

Book Directly Through the Car Rental Agency’s Website

Renting a car is rarely a fun activity. For many of us, it means we’ll devote time to finding the right price, deciding which features to add, and debating the cost and need for extra car rental insurance.

Thankfully, finding the right price doesn’t have to be difficult. There are tons of websites out there that claim to offer the best prices — but do they really? If you’re short on time or just want to get down to the nuts and bolts, we’ve given you a quick overview in the “Pros and Cons” section for each website listed here.

So, let’s get to it — here are 12 of the best websites to use to book your next rental car.

There are lots of benefits to booking directly through your car rental agency’s website. Many rental agencies have loyalty programs, and you can often choose to earn airline miles instead of car rental agency points (though there may be recovery fees associated).

However, they don’t always have the cheapest prices, and if they do, it would take a while to search through all of the sites to find out who has the best price.

Even if you intend to book directly with a car rental agency, it’s often a good idea to do a quick price search on a metasearch site or online travel agency to make sure you’re getting a good deal.

Expedia is a tried and true OTA that has been around since the 1990s. It’s a popular place to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

The site is easy to use with lots of filtering and sorting options so you can quickly find exactly what you’re looking for. You can quickly see the lowest price option for each category by using the Great Deal filtering option.

Expedia Great Deal

Plus, you can earn points in the One Key rewards program when you book an eligible car. This is a great way to participate in a loyalty program even when you’re not booking directly through a car rental agency.

Expedia also lets you bundle your car rental with a flight and/or hotel in a package, which will generally save you money.

Pros and Cons of Expedia

  • One Key rewards program
  • Great filtering options
  • You can book your rental car as part of a travel package
  • You often have to pay upfront to get the discounted price

Hot Tip: To maximize your next car rental, consider using a credit card with rental car insurance included to minimize your out-of-pocket costs. Outside of insurance, there are other reasons to use a rewarding card such as a travel credit card . Some of our favorites include: The Platinum Card from American Express , American Express ® Gold Card , and the Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card .

Momondo is a metasearch engine, similar to Kayak, that shows prices from lots of different online travel agencies. You’ll never actually book your trip on Momondo — instead, you can use the site to search for the best prices, then you’ll get transferred to that rental agency or online travel agency to book.

Car rental search on Momondo

While not necessarily a problem, Momondo will often transfer you to an obscure booking agency. Of course, that’s not a negative in and of itself, but you’ll need to understand that things like customer service, fees, or policies may differ from a company you’re more familiar with.

Pros and Cons of Momondo

  • Searches lots of other sites at one time
  • No loyalty program
  • Often transfers to obscure car rental agencies

Hot Tip: When comparing car rental prices from one website to another, it’s always good to click through all the way to see the final price. Many websites don’t display taxes and fees until the last page, so you may think you are getting a great deal when, in reality, you’re just looking at a base price that doesn’t include taxes and/or fees.

Like Momondo, Kayak is a metasearch engine that shows you prices on other websites in 1 spot. It’s a great way to quickly search for cheap car rentals, flights, and hotels.

Kayak has lots of ways to filter and sort your results, including a map so you can find a rental car by location and a policy filter so you can focus solely on cars that offer things like free cancellation or unlimited mileage.

If you end up choosing to book through Kayak, be sure to create an account and log in to see Private Deals which can save up to 35%.

Kayak Private Deals on car rentals

The featured price you see on Kayak is often the “pay now” price. If you click on the dropdown arrow next to View Deal you’ll be able to see other options, including which websites offer a “pay later” price.

Pros and Cons of Kayak

  • Great sorting and filtering options, including a map
  • “Pay now” vs “pay later” pricing is easy to see

Hot Tip: For more information check out our complete guide to booking travel with Kayak .

Orbitz is another huge website that’s been around awhile and is used quite a bit to book flights, hotels, and rental cars.

It’s got great filtering and sorting options and you can see only the lowest-priced options in each category by selecting Great Deal . That feature may sound familiar as it’s also available on Expedia. Many of these online travel agencies are run by the same companies and can appear almost identical. However, prices can vary among the sites, so it’s always good to check a few different ones to get the best price.

Orbitz Great Deal

If you decide to book a rental car through Orbitz, be sure to create an account and sign in so you can see Insider Pricing which can save 10% or more on car rentals.

Hot Tip: Orbitz has its own rewards program, Orbitz Rewards , in which you can earn Orbucks when you book flights, hotels, packages, and activities. Orbucks can then be used to save money on a hotel stay. Unfortunately, you can’t earn or redeem Orbucks on car rentals through Orbitz.

Pros and Cons of Orbitz

  • Great Deal filtering option
  • Insider Pricing
  • Orbitz Rewards can’t be earned or redeemed on all car rentals
  • You have to create an account to access some deals

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed post about booking travel with Orbitz .

Priceline gained fame from the “Priceline Negotiator” and the “Name Your Own Price” tool. While those tools brought opaque bookings to the forefront, both have since been eliminated.

You can, however, still get good deals on opaque bookings (one in which certain details are hidden until after the transaction is complete). If you don’t have a car rental agency preference, check out one of Priceline’s Express Deals . With these rentals, you won’t know the exact agency until after your booking is complete, but they can be a good way to save money.

Priceline Express Deal

Another type of opaque booking you’ll find on Priceline is called Supplier’s Choice . With this type of booking, you’ll know the exact car rental agency you’ll be renting from, but you won’t know what kind of vehicle you’ll get until you pick it up.

Priceline Suppliers choice

Regardless of what type of car you choose on Priceline, be sure to create an account and log in so you can see VIP pricing . This is an easy way to save up to 20% (depending on your membership level) on your car rental.

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to Priceline .

Pros and Cons of Priceline

  • Opaque bookings: Express Deals and Supplier’s Choice
  • Priceline VIP
  • Flexibility required to take advantage of opaque deals

Bottom Line: No matter where you book your rental car , be sure to use a credit card with car rental insurance included. One of our favorites is the Chase Sapphire Preferred card  because it offers primary insurance . That means you don’t need to submit a claim with your existing insurance before making a claim with them. For more information, check out our detailed post about maximizing your car insurance with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card.

Skyscanner , like Kayak, is a search engine, so when you find your car rental you’ll be transferred to another site to complete your booking.

While Skyscanner can offer good pricing, it’s hard to get much information about the rental, other than the price, at first glance of the search results. You have to click through on each result to find out basic information like the car rental agency.

Skyscanner car rental search results

Pros and Cons of Skyscanner

  • Searches lots of websites at one time
  • Hard to spot the good deals (opaque and special deals aren’t labeled)

Hot Tip: For more information check out our complete guide to using Skyscanner .

Travelocity  is a popular website used to search for cheap hotels, flights, and rental cars. While it’s powered by Expedia, pricing can be different on each site.

Like some other sites (Expedia and Orbitz), you can filter your search results to only show the lowest-priced option in each category, called Great Deals .

When scrolling the search results you can quickly see which options offer free cancellation and which ones are non-refundable . That information can be very handy since travel plans can change so much these days.

Travelocity car rental search results

Pros and Cons of Travelocity

  • “Great Deal” filtering option
  • Easily visible cancellation policies

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed post about using Travelocity to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more.

Hotwire is another site that offers opaque bookings, called Hotwire Hot Rate deals. You won’t know the rental agency until after the booking is complete, but Hotwire states that it will be from one of these companies:

Hotwire Hot Rate car

Pros and Cons of Hotwire

  • Hotwire Hot Rate cars

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our detailed guide to using Hotwire to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and more!

The first thing you’ll notice when searching for a rental car on Costco Travel is it includes only 4 major rental agencies — Alamo , Avis , Budget , and Enterprise .

The search results are displayed in an easy-to-read chart that highlights the cheapest price for each car type in red.

Costco car rental

The downside is that you have to be a Costco member to book a car through Costco Travel. However, if you’re renting a car as part of a vacation package, a Costco Shop card is often included in the deal, which can cover the cost of a membership. Plus, if you’ve got an Executive membership, you can earn 2% back on all of your Costco Travel purchases.

Pros and Cons of Costco Travel

  • Easy-to-use table that shows which rental agency has the lowest prices
  • Earn 2% back as a Cosco Executive member
  • Only shows prices from 4 rental agencies
  • You need to be a Costco member to use Costco Travel

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our in-depth guide to Costco Travel .

Fortunately, the best Amex credit cards also offer a travel booking service. You don’t need to hold an American Express credit card to use AmexTravel.com , but it can sometimes get you more benefits.

Renting a car through AmexTravel.com is very similar to other sites. It even offers a type of opaque booking where you won’t know the type of vehicle you’re getting until you pick it up.

Amex Travel specialty car rental

If you select a “pay now” price you’ll be able to use Membership Rewards to pay for your rental car . While it’s great to have the flexibility to pay with points, you’ll only get 0.7 cents per point in value, which is terrible. We value Amex Membership Rewards at about 2.2 cents each, so you’re getting less than a third of the typical value you could get by instead transferring your points to the Amex transfer partners .

Pros and Cons of American Express Travel

  • Opaque bookings
  • Ability to book a rental car with Membership Rewards points
  • Terrible value when using points to pay for a car rental

Hot Tip: For more information, check out our complete guide to using American Express Travel to book flights, hotels, rental cars, and cruises.

Rentalcars.com is a search engine that’s owned by the same company that also owns sites like Booking.com. Priceline, and Kayak, and as you can imagine, it specializes in rental cars.

What we liked about this site is the easy-to-read search results that quickly showed things like free cancellation and whether the deal was a “pay now” or “pay later” price.

Rentalcars.com search results

Rentalcars.com also offered opaque deals that are often a good way to save money if you’re not particular about the type of car or car rental agency you’re getting.

Pros and Cons of Rentalcars.com

  • Price match guarantee
  • Easy-to-read search results
  • No rewards program

Hot Tip: Interested in getting status, fast? Check out these rewards cards come that come with elite car rental status .

AutoSlash is a bit different than other sites. To get a rate quote on a rental car you need to submit all of your rental criteria plus your contact information. Then you’ll receive an email with your price quote .

It only takes a minute or 2 to request a quote from AutoSlash. One of the unique things about this site is that it will ask you about what types of credit cards and loyalty programs you have in order to get the best price.

AutoSlash quote process

Pros and Cons of Auto Slash

  • AutoSlash takes into account your rental car memberships and credit cards for any additional benefits
  • A list of available coupons is available in the Coupons  section
  • Price quotes aren’t instant; it takes about 5 to 10 minutes to receive an email with your price
  • It’s hard to quickly compare prices to other sites

In the following price comparisons, I was looking for the absolute cheapest price available, regardless of the rental agency, type of car, or cancellation policy.

Example 1: A weeklong rental from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX)

Example 2: A 3-day rental from Miami International Airport (MIA)

As you can see from these examples, prices are all over the map. Skyscanner offered the best price by far on the week-long rental in example #1 while Expedia and Travelocity tied for the best price on the 3-day rental in example #2.

Costco Travel had the highest price in both examples.

Hot Tip: For more tips, check out our guide to saving money on rental cars .

Finding the best price on your next car rental doesn’t have to be hard if you know where to look. These 12 websites can help you easily search through the options to find the best price for your next car rental. Which site you ultimately use is up to you — some offer a better search function, some offer a rewards program, and some are just easier to use.

Try out a couple of these sites when you’re searching for your next rental to find which one works best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best websites to use to book a rental car.

There is no one website that will always offer the cheapest prices every time. However, there are some sites that continually offer good deals. In our head-to-head comparisons, Skyscanner, Expedia, and Travelocity all offered prices lower than other websites.

What is an opaque booking?

An opaque booking is one in which the car rental agency or the type of car is hidden until your booking is complete. Many sites , including Hotwire, American Express, Rentalcars.com, and Priceline offer opaque bookings.

What is the cheapest rental car company?

Unfortunately, there’s not one specific rental agency offers the best prices all the time. There are a few websites which will usually offer the lowest prices on a consistent basis. Try searching for your rental car on a site like Skyscanner, Expedia, or Travelocity before deciding where to book.

Is it cheaper to rent a car at the airport or off-site?

Rental car prices tend to be more expensive at airport locations because of higher per day fees and airport concession fees and taxes. However, be sure to double-check pricing and add in any expenses you might incur (like a taxi or Uber ) to get to the off-site location. Sometimes the extra charge is worth it for the convenience of an airport pickup.

Should I get car rental insurance?

Whether or not you should pay for the rental agency’s insurance policy depends on a few things. First, take a look in your wallet. Do you have a credit card that offers extra car rental insurance ? If not, it’s probably a good idea to go ahead and take the insurance offered by the rental agency.

But if you have a good travel rewards credit card that comes with insurance, an additional policy might not be necessary.

How far in advance should I rent a car for the best price?

The exact right time to book a rental car is an ever-changing thing — there is no formula to use to guarantee the lowest price, unfortunately. The general consensus is that unless you have lots of flexibility, it’s probably best to book as soon as you can.

However, if you can afford to wait (and have no preference for car type or rental agency) you may be able to get a lower price closer in. Waiting till the last minute to book does have some risk — cars can sell out and agencies can raise prices anytime. Even if you wait till the last minute, you should book online! Booking at the counter will almost always be more expensive.

The Guide to Audi On Demand Car Rentals

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

Audi on Demand is a premium car rental platform owned by Audi. It allows travelers to pick a rental vehicle from an Audi-only fleet of cars. You can rent short term and experience luxury for a day or rent for a few months, all after a few taps on your smartphone screen.

So, if you’d love to get behind the wheel of an Audi, here’s what you need to know about the Audi on Demand car rental program.

What is Audi on Demand?

Audi on Demand (formerly known as Silvercar by Audi ) is a car rental service owned and provided exclusively by Audi. As you can probably guess, the company focuses on a premium car rental experience and offers app-based booking with same-day service.

How does Audi on demand work?

The Audi rental program is quite similar to traditional car rental programs in that to rent a vehicle, you need to select your location, pick a car and hit the road. However, the type of car you get isn’t going to be your typical Toyota Camry or Fiat 500.

The Audi on demand fleet includes three vehicle options:

Audi A5 Sportback, a five-passenger sedan.

Audi Q5, a five-passenger midsize SUV.

Audi Q7, a seven-passenger full-size SUV.

The vehicles are located at nearly 40 participating Audi dealerships in the United States.

California.

Massachusetts.

North Carolina.

New Jersey.

Pennsylvania.

South Carolina.

Washington.

To find out whether Audi on demand is available in your destination, visit this page and enter your ZIP code.

You must pick up and drop off a car during a dealership’s business hours only, so keep this in mind if you need to get there from the airport.

If your flight lands outside of business hours, Audi on Demand might not be a good option for you. You also need to consider the cost of transportation to the dealership, whether via a ride share, bus or light rail, and the time it takes to get there.

Drivers have access to daily, weekly and monthly rentals. All rentals come with complimentary in-car Wi-Fi, navigation and SiriusXM satellite radio. Same-day service is available.

How to book an Audi on Demand

Start on the service’s homepage and click “Book now.” It’s also possible to reserve a car through the mobile app.

On the next page, you’ll be presented with all participating partner locations. Select the one you need and enter your rental dates on the next page. Pick the vehicle, fill out your personal information and card number and confirm your reservation.

You must be at least 22 years old to rent from Audi.

Is Audi on Demand expensive?

Because you’re getting a premium vehicle and a premium experience, expect to pay more than what you would at a traditional car rental company . Let’s look at an example of how much more you can expect to pay.

We searched for a vehicle rental for a week in Tampa, Florida, and found the following Audi on Demand pricing.

A5 Sportback for $95 per day or $665 for a week (excluding taxes and fees).

Q5 for $105 per day or $735 for a week (excluding taxes and fees).

Adding a second driver to the reservation is free, but they must be at least 22 years old, have a valid driver’s license and be present at pickup time.

We also searched Priceline for car rentals with other companies, like Budget, Hertz and Sixt, and found non luxury midsize SUVs ranging from $49 to $54 per day (excluding taxes and fees). However, your driving and overall customer service experience will be significantly different.

So, Audi on Demand is going to cost you more money than a rental from another car rental agency, but you will receive a luxury car and a higher-class experience.

Audi on Demand fair fueling promise

We all know about the unfair fuel upcharge practiced by some car rental companies. With Audi on Demand’s fair fueling promise, you’ll be charged only for the gas that you’ve used plus a $9.95 fill-up fee. If you return a car with a full tank, there will be no additional charge, but you are asked to use premium gas in your Audi rental.

Does Audi on Demand provide insurance?

Audi on Demand offers a few types of optional insurance plans to renters. You can pick none or a combination of coverage options for your Audi.

You and your things

This option covers personal accident and personal property insurance. Here’s what’s covered:

Personal accident insurance:

$250,000 driver death, $125,000 per passenger.

$2,500 medical expenses per person.

$250 ambulance coverage per person.

Total maximum limit is $500,000.

Personal property insurance:

Maximum limit is $600 per person.

Total maximum limit is $1,800.

Other people and their things

This option covers claims made by a third party for injury or damage as a result of an accident.

Here’s what’s included:

Uninsured / underinsured motorist protection.

Excess third-party liability coverage.

Total maximum limit is $1 million.

Just the car

This option covers all loss and damage of the vehicle in case of an accident. If you choose this option, you’ll assume zero financial responsibility for the car if something happens to it.

How to get an Audi on Demand car for less

Enroll in the always audi program.

Current Audi drivers can rent a car from Audi on demand for an entire week for free. Of course, with an offer this good, terms apply.

To redeem the Always Audi weeklong free rental, you must be an owner or lessee of a 2022 or newer Audi model. Then, log in to your Audi on Demand account, select the Always Audi program and enter the code that was sent to you when you purchased your Audi vehicle. That’s it.

You also can request to apply Always Audi days to your rental by emailing [email protected] or calling 855-359-2227.

You don’t have to use all seven rental days in a row. You can book multiple rentals totaling seven days at no cost. This can be a great opportunity to test-drive another Audi if you’re in between leases or treat your family from out of state to a premium vehicle rental while they’re visiting.

Use Audi on Demand rewards points

Unfortunately, Audi on Demand is ending its rewards program July 1, 2024, and no longer offers earning of points on new rentals. However, if you have any points stored up from your previous rentals, you can use them for a new rental until July 1.

If you don’t have enough points, it’s possible to pay with a combination of cash and points.

Pay with a Visa Infinite card

U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card

Visa Infinite cardholders have access to special perks, one of which is a 15% discount at Audi on Demand rentals.

Visa Infinite cards include the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and the U.S. Bank Altitude™ Reserve Visa Infinite® Card , so if you hold either one of these cards, take a look at the benefits guide.

Use a credit card with rental car collision damage waiver

Certain credit cards offer this perk as part of their benefits package to cardholders. To avoid paying for additional car protection and to save some cash, decline the rental company’s collision insurance at the counter and pay with an eligible card. The protection would be the equivalent of the “Just the car” insurance plan offered by Audi.

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

If an accident occurs when you possess the vehicle, your personal insurance will be off the hook. It’s best to use a credit card that offers this benefit as primary, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Keep in mind that auto rental collision damage waiver that comes with Chase cards taps out at $75,000 and is limited to 31-day rentals. Select Audi models are covered, so you’d have to call a benefits administrator to confirm whether your Audi on demand rental would be covered.

Customer at a car rental counter discussing car rental insurance.

What is rental car coverage and how does it work?

Understand your coverage before buying insurance for rental cars.

It's usually a standard question at a rental car company counter: "Do you need rental car insurance?" Considering the rental car company has insurance on their car, you have insurance on your personal car and you may also have rental coverage available through your credit card, what should you do? This type of “insurance”, technically a waiver, may help to cover costs should the car become damaged or incapacitated during your rental time. Here's how to sort out the specifics.

What is rental car insurance coverage?

Typically, coverage through a rental car company falls into five categories:

  • Collision damage waiver (CDW) or Loss damage waiver (LDW): Releases you from damages that occur to the rental car, including vandalism and theft.
  • Liability: Provides coverage for damages or injuries you may cause with the rented vehicle.
  • Personal accident insurance (PAI): Protects you and your passengers should injuries occur while driving the rental car.
  • Personal effects coverage (PEC): Covers personal items that may be stolen from the rented vehicle.
  • Roadside assistance: Covers emergency roadside expenses, lost keys and travel assistance.

Do I need rental car insurance?

Many personal vehicle insurance policies already include some sort of car rental insurance coverage — so if you purchase a rental car policy, you're paying extra when you may not have to. Let your State Farm® agent know the reason for the rental so they can help assess how coverage from your personal vehicle policy might apply. Then, ask your agent these key questions:

  • How much Liability , Comprehensive and Collision coverage do I have on my personal vehicle? The coverage you have on your personal vehicle may also extend to your rental car.
  • If my car insurance has high physical damage coverage deductibles, are rental cars adequately covered? Sometimes they’re not.
  • If I have roadside service , are towing and administrative fees also extended to the rental car?
  • If items are stolen from the rental car, does homeowners or renters insurance cover the loss? This is sometimes referred to as off-premises coverage.
  • Does my personal auto policy cover loss of income coverage? If the vehicle becomes damaged during your rental time and repairs are needed, the company may charge you for the vehicle's potential earnings while it's being repaired.

Does my credit card cover rental car insurance?

If you pay for a rental car with a major credit card, the card issuer may offer secondary car rental insurance at no charge. In general, this coverage will be used after your personal auto insurance policy is used. Keep in mind that credit card coverage varies from card to card and the institutions which issue the cards. This coverage typically only helps with additional expenses such as reimbursing your insurance deductible. Exotic, expensive or larger vehicles may not be covered by credit cards.

Refer to your card’s website for information about available rental car coverage or call the number on the back of the card to inquire.

Review your rental coverage options

Don’t sign anything or agree to coverage without reading the policy thoroughly. Insurance requirements and rules vary from state to state.

  • Unless your auto insurance coverage adequately extends to rental cars, you may need to get some kind of insurance coverage from the rental organization. In place of collision or comprehensive car coverages, you may be able to obtain a rental car company loss damage waiver, or LDW, which can help cover damage-repair costs, administrative fees and towing.
  • If you don't have health or medical payments coverage on an existing policy, you may be able to purchase personal accident coverage.
  • If your personal auto policy doesn’t include emergency road service or first party medical coverage such as personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments coverage (MPC), consider purchasing these.

What if I’m using a car sharing or a peer-to-peer service?

  • According to the Insurance Information Institute (III), coverages can vary greatly. If you're renting from a nontraditional car sharing company, review the agreement carefully. While insurance is sometimes included in the fee, there may be restrictions or extra costs, particularly if the car is stolen.
  • Consider discussing coverages with your insurance agent and inquire with the service you’re renting from.

Do I need international car rental insurance when abroad?

Contact your agent and credit card company well in advance of your trip. Paying for international coverage might help if you have an accident or the vehicle is stolen while traveling abroad.

Renting for work or play?

Coverage extensions from your existing policy or your credit card may not apply if you're renting a car for business. In that case, review the coverage options through your employer.

Select the right size rental vehicle

When reserving a car, know how many people will be traveling with you and how much luggage room you will need. You'll want to have enough space to see clearly out of each window and to keep passengers comfortable. Remember, middle seats are often small for adults but typically fine for children, unless car seats are needed. If you need room for more than four adults, consider choosing a vehicle with a third row.

Inspect the rental car

Give the car a once-over to check the following before driving off:

  • Prior body damage
  • Tire pressure and condition
  • Windshield wiper condition and wiper fluid level

Also double-check that the car is equipped with important safety features , and verify that the add-ons you agreed to are present and functioning appropriately.

Want to try an EV? Rentals are getting cheaper.

Last summer, Greg Scott and his partner stood at a rental car counter at the Portland, Ore., airport and faced a big vacation decision. The agent had offered them an electric BMW for the same price as the gas-powered model. After a few minutes of deliberation, the couple declined.

“We were going to be crisscrossing the state, visiting relatives, visiting friends, going to wineries, that sort of thing, and I didn’t know where I would be able to charge,” said Scott, a spokesman for the American Car Rental Association who drives an electric vehicle at home in Virginia. “It wasn’t range anxiety. It was more like charging anxiety.”

After an initial jolt of excitement for EVs, the rental car industry has watched interest wane , expenses soar and its investment in eco-friendly transportation fizzle. For many travelers, including personal EV owners, the appeal for renting a zero-emissions vehicle is tepid. The anemic demand is one of several factors that has forced companies to thin their EV inventories and rethink their strategy.

In December, Munich-based rental agency Sixt said it would sell its remaining Teslas, which it had last purchased in 2022, as part of its “regular de-fleeting process.” Then this month, Hertz said it was going to ditch about 20,000 EVs from its U.S. fleets. The divestment was a dramatic reversal from its 2021 plan to acquire an unprecedented 100,000 Teslas .

“It’s a black eye for Hertz and for the overall rental car industry,” said Dan Ives, a managing director and senior equity research analyst with Wedbush Securities . “The appetite was stronger than the reality, and they never had the marketing and the education behind it.”

The car rental industry is not abandoning EVs; it is just tapping the brakes. Hertz is only selling one-third of its collection. In an email to The Washington Post, a Sixt spokesperson said the company wants to increase the “enthusiasm for e-mobility” among its renters. It is aiming to switch 70 to 90 percent of its Europe fleet to electric by 2030 and has made significant investments in the field, such as installing charging stations at its branches.

Enterprise Mobility owns several thousand EVs throughout North America and Europe, but spokeswoman Lisa Martini said demand is low. The company will expand its inventory if interest grows and the EV industry’s framework advances.

“As infrastructure for EVs continues to improve, we anticipate demand will follow and we’ll continue to thoughtfully transition our fleet to meet those needs,” Martini said.

For now, companies desperate to rent EVs are using deals and discounts as an incentive. For a limited time, Hertz is offering 20 percent off EVs plus a free day’s rental on bookings of three days or more. Some counter agents are also taking a hard sell approach.

“What I heard universally from business and leisure travelers over the past six to 12 months is that rental agencies were throwing electric cars at them,” said Karl Brauer , an executive analyst with ISeeCars.com . “They would say, ‘Yeah, we know you said you wanted a Toyota Corolla but would you please take the EV. You don’t have to return it charged. We’ll cut the price. Please, please, please , please, please.’”

What went wrong

In a recent interview with CNBC , Hertz chief executive Stephen Scherr said the decision to cut the company’s EV fleet was not a referendum on green cars. It was pure economics, an attempt to stem financial loss. Hertz did not reply to several requests for comment.

“We’ve talked to Hertz’s leadership and I believe that they’re still really committed to EVs,” said Joel Levin, executive director of Plug In America, an EV advocacy organization. “I think they’ve just decided that they need to slow down their rollout a little bit.”

Auto experts said the rental car industry was not prepared for the challenges of EVs. Brauer said servicing and fixing EVs can cost more and take longer than maintaining traditional gas vehicles, because of the limited number of EV dealerships and repair facilities, and a scarcity of parts.

“They thought there would be a higher profit margin because they cost less to operate,” Brauer said. “What they found was the opposite: They cost more to operate.”

New EV drivers were also banging up the cars, because of a lack of instruction. Brauer said people were driving off the rental lot without fully understanding how the car operated or how recharging worked. Some vehicles’ rapid acceleration also caught them by surprise.

“They have instant torque at low speed, and people start playing with it like it’s a racecar,” he said. “There’s no engine noise to tell you how fast you’re going, and they weigh more because they’ve got big heavy battery packs, so they’re harder to stop.”

The rental car companies also misjudged travelers’ level of enthusiasm for EVs. Scott said no one, including himself, wants to waste precious vacation time searching for a charging station. Brauer said juicing up the battery before catching your flight home can add more stress to an already tense predeparture routine.

“Who wants to deal with charging an electric car in the process of getting from their travel destination to their home destination?” Brauer asked.

While rentals floundered, the resale market also tanked. The companies, which make money by selling their used rental cars, were hurt by Tesla’s move to reduce prices on its new cars.

“Tesla did a big price cut in the past year, and because all the rental cars agencies have this business model where they run the cars for a year or two and then sell them into the used car market, the price cut really affected the value of that fleet,” Levin said.

Public charging stations are multiplying

Green travel advocates remain optimistic about the future of EVs in the rental market. They consider Hertz’s culling a stumble, not a step backward.

“I think their level of ambition was very, very high. They did something bold that no one else has ever done before, and they’ve got some learning to do,” Levin said. “I think they’re just recalibrating a little bit.”

However, help is on the way. The Biden administration set a goal of providing a half-million public charging ports by 2026. According to a White House news release dated Jan. 19, the latest count is 170,000 chargers. In addition, the departments of Transportation and Energy announced $325 million in new investments that will improve the quality and increase the quantity of public chargers around the country. Another $623 million is earmarked for connecting more dots in the national charging network.

Scott said he would like to see more chargers installed in tourist areas, such as hotels, resorts, beaches, airports — and even Disney World .

“The same way you fill up your tank before you get back to the airport, you should be able to basically stop by and do a Level 3 charge for, say, 10 minutes and then return the car so you don’t get charged a fee by the car rental company,” he said.

A multiyear project run by the Department of Energy could improve the EV rental car experience. The primary purpose of the Athena project , which debuted in 2018, is to create a master plan for electrifying transportation hubs. For the Athena Zero-Emissions Vehicle phase of the initiative, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport is a test site.

“ If we can solve this challenge of getting the car rental industry electrified, at least in concept, then we can move on to other parts of the airport, because, quite frankly, the car rental industry is probably the biggest power demand, besides perhaps lighting or heating the actual terminal.” Scott said.

Be a smart EV driver

Just like any car adventure, travelers should equip themselves with the tools that will ensure a safe and angst-free road trip.

For EV drivers, this means mapping out a route that accounts for charging stations. Tesla’s navigation system and app displays its charging locations. For other models, Levin recommends such apps as PlugShare and ABetterRouteplanner.

To avoid accidents, accelerate slowly and use eco-mode, which conserves energy and reduces the rate of acceleration. Give yourself ample space between cars, because the heavier EV may require more time to stop. Electric cars are very quiet, so make sure the sound emitter is functioning and be careful in parking lots and crosswalks where pedestrians are present.

To maximize range, follow the 80/20 rule: Keep your car charged below 80 percent and above 20 percent. Be aware of how cold temperatures can affect an EV’s performance. According to Consumer Reports, an Arctic chill can decrease the battery’s range by 20 percent and slow down recharging time. Using the car’s heater can also sap the car’s juice. One trick for extending your range is to heat the interior while the car is still plugged in. You can make your Tesla toasty while still tucked in your hotel bed, a perk that gas-powered cars can’t claim.

How the Capital One Venture X travel credit can save you $300 on your next trip

Chris Dong

Editor's Note

As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover – and the same phrase can be applied to a credit card's annual fee.

Take the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card , for instance. While this premium rewards card sports a $395 annual fee (see rates and fees ), several ongoing valuable perks help offset the full cost of that figure.

Those perks are in addition to a nice sign-up bonus : 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

One of the ongoing principal benefits that Venture X cardholders receive each year is $300 in annual credits that apply toward bookings made on Capital One Travel . Let's take a closer look at the Venture X annual credit, how you can make the most of it — and why you may want to apply now.

What is the Venture X $300 travel credit?

Venture X cardholders receive $300 in credits each cardmember year (not calendar year) toward travel, including the year you open the card. That means you can get $300 in value from the Venture X immediately.

But there is one caveat: The credit only applies to bookings made through the Capital One Travel portal .

tourist car rental

The Capital One Travel portal is an online travel agency (OTA). It can be best compared to those offered by other issuers, such as Amex Travel and the Chase Travel℠ portal. What sets Capital One's portal apart is that it has partnered with Hopper , a travel booking startup with excellent predictive pricing technology that can help cardholders ensure they get the best price.

Cardholders can log into the Capital One Travel portal to book things like airfare, hotel stays and rental car reservations. The $300 credit will then be applied to those purchases.

Even better, the credit can be used across one or multiple transactions until the $300 limit is reached, and no registration is required. This means the credit will automatically apply to transactions until you hit the $300 mark without you needing to do any additional work to take advantage of this perk.

Booking through Capital One Travel vs. booking direct

At face value, the requirement to use the Capital One Travel portal might feel like a limitation, especially when you consider the benefits of booking travel directly.

For instance, when booking certain hotels or car rentals through any third-party service – including Capital One Travel and other credit card issuers' travel portals – you will typically forfeit elite-status benefits and the ability to earn elite-qualifying credits and points within these loyalty programs.

tourist car rental

However, for flights and independent hotels (including Disney resorts , for those who love visits to the Disney parks), booking through the Capital One Travel portal still makes a lot of sense since you wouldn't earn hotel points anyway. Flights booked this way usually still earn points and elite-qualifying miles, the same as booking directly.

Finally, Capital One Travel has several unique features thanks to its partnership with Hopper.

This includes an integrated price prediction and matching tool along with a best-price guarantee. Capital One also offers the option to purchase cancel-for-any-reason (CFAR) flight coverage , and price freeze protection, allowing folks to lock in a price they find on the portal for a fee until they're ready or able to book.

Earning miles through Capital One Travel

Aside from how easy it is to maximize that $300 credit, there is one other excellent reason to use the Venture X to book travel through the Capital One Travel portal: the bonus-earning opportunities.

The Venture X has a simple earning structure, accruing 2 miles per dollar on most charges. However, it features elevated earning rates for bookings made via Capital One Travel:

  • 10 miles per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked via Capital One Travel
  • 5 miles per dollar on flights booked via Capital One Travel

So, by using the Venture X for Capital One Travel purchases, you can ensure you take full advantage of your $300 annual credit and then earn bonus miles on your other bookings above and beyond that threshold.

tourist car rental

You should also look into how you can stack rental car perks using Hertz and the Venture X, saving yourself a lot of time, money and hassle leaving the airport and getting your vacation started.

Upon enrollment, accessible through the Capital One website or mobile app, eligible cardholders will remain at upgraded status level through December 31, 2024. Please note, enrolling through the normal Hertz Gold Plus Rewards enrollment process (e.g. at Hertz.com) will not automatically detect a cardholder as being eligible for the program and cardholders will not be automatically upgraded to the applicable status tier. Additional terms apply.

Earn miles while using the credit

Venture X cardholders can receive the $300 annual Capital One Travel credit while still earning miles (at the applicable rate).

For instance, let's say you booked a hotel for exactly $300 through the Capital One Travel portal. You'd be credited $300 on your statement, and you would also earn 3,000 miles ($300 multiplied by 10 miles per dollar) for the "purchase." That's very generous on Capital One's end.

How does this travel credit compare to other premium cards?

Two major competitors to Venture X in the premium card space are The Platinum Card® from American Express and Chase Sapphire Reserve® .

Both the Chase and Amex products carry higher annual fees but also extend an array of additional perks that may be useful for some consumers. They each carry travel-specific benefits that are worth comparing to the Venture X.

Chase Sapphire Reserve

The Chase Sapphire Reserve charges a $550 annual fee, and one of its standout perks is a highly flexible $300 annual travel credit . Unlike Capital One's requirement to use a proprietary booking portal, Chase allows Sapphire Reserve cardholders to earn their $300 back on a wide variety of travel transactions , regardless of whether they book directly with a hotel or airline or through Chase Travel.

Amex Platinum

The Amex Platinum charges a $695 annual fee (see rates and fees ), with an array of built-in statement credits that help offset the yearly cost of the card.

The two perks that are most similar to Capital One's are an up-to-$200 airline incidental fee statement credit each calendar year and up to another $200 in statement credits on prepaid Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings (of two or more nights) made through Amex Travel when you pay with your Amex Platinum. Enrollment is required for select benefits.

Bottom line

Premium credit cards tend to feature high annual fees but often, the protections, credits and perks they offer make up for a large chunk of those annual fees.

In the case of the Venture X, a $300 annual credit applied to Capital One Travel bookings significantly offsets the card's $395 annual fee (see rates and fees ), and it can be a great way to save money on travel . This also effectively reduces the cost of the annual fee to $95 once you've maxed out that $300 credit.

If you plan to apply for the Capital One Venture X — or have the card already — you will want to familiarize yourself with the travel portal to ensure you get the most out of this benefit.

Apply here: Capital One Venture X with 75,000 bonus miles when you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.

For Capital One products listed on this page, some of the above benefits are provided by Visa® or Mastercard® and may vary by product. See the respective Guide to Benefits for details, as terms and exclusions apply.

Unless otherwise specified, the per diem locality is defined as "all locations within, or entirely surrounded by, the corporate limits of the key city, including independent entities located within those boundaries."
