Sail the pristine waters of the Siolim River during an insightful, overnight tour along the beautiful backwaters of Goa.

The life of the backwaters is the focus of this rewarding tour along the stunning Siolim River, introducing you to the traditions of the state, including riverbank farming and cockle fishing. The Houseboat departs the Siolim jetty late afternoon, cruising past the 16 th -century Chapora Fort and local fishermen in their colourful boats along the way, before heading towards the open sea to spot dolphins or swim on the deserted Morjim Beach.

After a glorious sunset, the Houseboat will cruise into the backwaters before mooring up for the night and serving up a hot Goan dinner after a relaxing drink atop of bobbing of the water.

You’ll wake up the next morning to the gentle chirping of birds, before tucking into a fulfilling breakfast, and if you are lucky, an accompaniment of fresh smoked clams and mussels will also adorn your plate. The houseboat will then start its final cruise back down river, passing ancient fishing villages dotted with temples, churches and coconut groves before arriving at the jetty early afternoon for your ride back to your hotel.

After a glorious champagne sunset, we sail into the backwaters, alongside little ancient villages dotted with their Temples, Churches and Coconut farms before we moor for the night where you can try your luck at crab fishing whilst you sip your drink. Your crew will serve you a hot tasty Goan – Indian dinner before we call it a night. You’re free to use the upper deck and share some unforgettable moments under the starry skies.

Day2 Wake up to a refreshing cup of Tea / Coffee with the chirping of birds, try your luck at fishing whilst having a filling breakfast, and if lucky with some freshly caught & smoked clams or mussels. Around 0830hrs we sail along the silent river with lunch, and drop off at the jetty at 1300hrs where your car will be waiting to drop you back to your hotel.

Unwind on a houseboat on the Chapora River, Goa

Kicking off my sandals I lie back on the cushions, take a sip of a cool Kingfisher beer and watch the palm trees drifting by. It’s the second to last night of a fabulous week in India and we’re spending it on a Kerala style rice boat on a mini cruise in Goa on the Chapora River.

An overnight cruise in Goa

We leave from the Siolim Jetty, just before sunset. Cruising along on a Goa houseboat has to be the perfect way to relax after a very hectic but wonderful week. We’ve visited so many lovely hotels from the quirky and unique to the upmost in absolute luxury but spending the night on a Goa houseboat was the one thing we were all most looking forward to.

As the sun sets behind the palms there’s just enough room for a spot of yoga but the scene is too picturesque not to pick up my camera and take a few shots.

The aromas from the kitchen drift our way as our chef prepares our dinner. One of the best meals we’ve had all week follows, which is saying something as we’ve eaten very well indeed. Back up top I enjoy another beer and watch a firework display across the waters on the far shore – a birthday party or wedding perhaps.

Each of the three bedrooms on our Goa houseboat is simply but comfortably furnished with ensuite facilities and a ceiling fan. My room is cosy and inviting as I slip between the crisp white sheets. I can feel a gentle rocking and hear the water lapping against the side of the boat. Far in the distance music is playing but it soothes me rather than disturbs. I sleep soundly, wake early, dress quickly and grab my camera to catch the sunrise.

After breakfast we head back up top and spend a lazy morning, watching the passing villages and the occasional fishing boat.

When to go on an overnight cruise in Goa?

The best time for a trip on a Goa houseboat is in the winter between November and March when the weather is hot with a cooling sea breeze providing natural air conditioning. At this time of year, there’s very little to no rain.

Many years ago I spent a couple of days floating along the backwaters of Kerala where these rice boats originated. During that time I barely saw another houseboat and it was, without doubt, one of the highlights of my earlier Indian adventures. The scene was idyllic. Sadly though, or so I’ve read, the waterways of Kerala are now teaming with these houseboats causing pollution and intruding on the privacy of locals.

Not so in the Goan waterways. They remind me of the Kerala backwaters of old. Let’s hope they stay that way – a dreamy world where your worries drift away with the tide.

This Goan houseboat experience looks very dreamy… Sad to hear the Kerala waterways are getting polluted! We’ve yet to visit India – by the time we get there, all the great spots will have been taken over by tourists! (But maybe not the Goan waterways?)

I’m afraid that may well be true in the main but I’m sure there will always be some hidden gem worth hunting out.

While the rooms were very basic they really were inviting and of course, with just three bedrooms you could easily team up with some friends or family and have the whole boat to yourselves. Perfect!
