About The National

Formed in 1999, The National have established themselves as mainstays of arenas and festivals with sold-out performances and headlining slots around the world. The band has scored five top 10 albums on The Billboard 200, multiple Grammy nominations with 2017’s Sleep Well Beast earning the award for Best Alternative Album.

The National dropped not one but two new albums in 2023. First Two Pages of Frankenstein was released in April, followed by a surprise album Laugh Track in September, both on 4AD. Across two albums worth of new material they were joined by Phoebe Bridgers, Taylor Swift, Roseanne Cash, Bon Iver and Sufjian Stevens. 2023 was their best live year yet, selling out shows in North America and Europe, including Madison Square Garden, LA’s Greek Theatre and Alexandra Palace in London.

Named one of their “ Best Albums of 2023 ”, Rolling Stone called First Two Pages of Frankenstein ”…a remarkable reassertion of their potency and shared commitment…Nine albums deep, the National found new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out.” They were also named Forbes ’s “ Band of the Year” , with the article stating, “All The National did in 2023 was release two superb albums … have a brilliant sold-out tour, deliver the festival set of the year with their riveting performance at BottleRock and collaborated with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Swift and Sufjan Stevens. The National are so consistently great it becomes easy to take for granted they will be at the top of their game. But even by their lofty standards this was an incredible year.” And The New Yorker ’s Amanda Petrusich named it as one of her favorites of the year, saying if you already like “what the National has been doing for the past two-plus decades – making brooding, fraught, atmospheric rock and roll, marked by careful, resonant production and a ribbon of debauched humor—you are likely to also savor First Two Pages of Frankenstein , a heady encapsulation of the band’s entire gestalt.”

The National is Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

About The War On Drugs

The War on Drugs have steadily emerged as one of this century’s great rock and roll synthesists, removing the gaps between the underground and the mainstream, between the obtuse and the anthemic, making records that wrestle a fractured past into a unified and engrossing present. Led by Adam Granduciel, The New Yorker called them “the best American ‘rock’ band of this decade” in support of their album, A Deeper Understanding, for which they won the 2018 Grammy for Best Rock Album and were nominated for a BRIT Award for International Group of the Year. 2020 saw the release of LIVE DRUGS featuring live interpretations of songs throughout their career, including off their 2014 breakthrough, Lost In The Dream. Co-produced by Granduciel and Shawn Everett, their fifth studio album, I Don’t Live Here Anymore, chips away some of their hazier edges in favor of sharper melodies, broadening the borders of the meticulous yet joyously simple sound [Granduciel] has perfected” (Pitchfork, Best New Music). It landed on numerous 2021 best albums of the year lists and garnered a second GRAMMY Award nomination (Best Rock Song) and BRIT Award nomination. The band headlined Madison Square Garden in support of its release.

About Lucius

Acclaimed indie band Lucius has been turning heads since the start thanks to their irrepressibly catchy songs, explosive harmonies, and bold aesthetic. Formed by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, the Los Angeles group got rolling with their 2013 debut album Wildewoman — featuring long-standing hits like “Two of Us on the Run”. Rolling Stone hailed the record for “an updated ’60s girl-group sound at once fresh and thrilling.” Lucius shifted towards a folk rock sound with 2016’s Good Grief before taking a break from the studio to join Roger Waters on his Us + Them Tour in 2017-18. Lucius returned to the studio in 2022 with the dance-ready collection Second Nature , which features singles “Next to Normal”, one of NPR Music’s top songs of the year and “Dance Around It” the pulsing song with Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile. In addition to their own work, the GRAMMY-nominated Wolfe and Laessig are singers in demand: their voices have graced songs by a host of other artists, including Carlile, The War on Drugs, John Legend, Harry Styles, Jeff Tweedy and Ozzy Osbourne.

The National are probably the biggest band to come out of Cincinnati, Ohio. The indie-rock group is made up of 5 band members, including two sets of brothers, who play alongside lead singer Matt Beringer.

The band were formed in 1999, and they’ve been touring pretty much ever since. Most of their time as a group has been spent in Brooklyn, New York, where they’ve had a slow burning career that’s seen them grow from being a hardworking but relatively unknown band, to a group who headline festivals around the world and sell out 20,000 capacity arenas.

The full line up consists of lead vocalist Matt Beringer, twin brothers Aaron (guitar, bass, keys) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and another set of brothers Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

Matt Beringer’s distinctive baritone voice, alongside his self-penned discerning lyrics gives the band a unique sound, often described as erring on the sombre-side. They are said to have taken influence from the likes of Tom Waits and Nick Cave, but believe strongly in being innovative and continuing to grow independently as an act.

Interesting fact: one of their biggest breakthrough moments came from their track "Fake Empire" featuring on the 2008 Obama campaign. This, alongside successful support tours with artists like R.E.M., set them on the path to their current popularity. The release of "High Violet" in 2010 saw them reach the biggest achievements of their career - hitting the top 5 across the UK, US and Canada.

Their most recent album "Trouble Will Find Me", was the record that really cemented them into the mainstream. Just before the release of this sixth EP, they premiered a documentary called "Mistaken For Strangers" which followed the band on their "High Violet" tour, focusing mainly on the relationship between singer Matt Beringer and his brother, who took on the role of assistant tour manager.

The National are true strivers, they’ve gradually warmed their way into many a record collection, and with each release prove themselves to be more accomplished than before. Despite their more recent successes, they are not to be considered as having reached a peak: it’s in their nature to continue to improve on themselves.

Live reviews

I suppose any music lover feels a personal connection with what they are listening too, no matter how trite. For fans of The National, the deeply personal, cathartic nature of their songs always seem to express a deep sense of longing. It’s become emblematic of their songs: that somewhat mournful tone in the Dessner production, the halted and deep baritone of Berninger voice, the stark delivery of the rhythm by the Devendorfs.

Few bands know how to manage the mediums which they use as effectively as The National. Their studio sound is immaculate but their live shows are just as perfectly constructed to give the sense of a magical connection between band and crowd night after night. To these talents we can now add short film with Mike Mills’ oeuvre.

Although I personally felt that they had relied too much on their emblematic character over content on their previous album: Sleep Well Beast and I was relieved and delighted by the novelty of an overtly feminin nature on I am Easy to Find. It is a truly excellent LP to add to their already impressive catalogue of outstanding albums but it is easier to achieve intimacy in a studio. The Dessners are expert producers, lending their latents to many other musicians in the Indie world. Harnessing The National’s inimitable vibe in the controlled environment of a studio is easier than expressing deep and personal feeling during a rock concert.

This is where Matt Berninger shines. While the other members of the band play fantastically and even with some theatricality; occasionally trading places and instruments throughout. Berninger’s stage presence is what truly makes a The National concert an experience.

He doesn’t have a good singing voice and he doesn’t have expressive of diverting stage banter (On this occasion he shared the fact that their tour bus has truck a moose on route to Montreal) but what he does have is the ability to give the impression he is reaching out to us, the audience members.

Unlike most musicians who regularly appear in the news for kicking cameras or knocking peoples’ phones out of their hands, Berninger encourages cell phone filming in his shows through his antics. Granted, there is pro forma pre-recorded warning prior to the show that all venues play which warns that filming the show is forbidden, but when the modern audience inevitably pull out their devices to “capture the moment”, the National frontman gives them something to remember. During one song he took a phone out of a front row audience member’s hand and carried it on-stage alternating between filming himself in extreme confessional close-up or capturing guitar work by one Dessner or another.

In another case, he took the phone on a wild ride during one of his legendary walkabouts through the audience. If you’ve been to a The National show, you will recognize this characteristic move by Berninger. He will suddenly become compelled to leave the stage and plow into the crowd. He enters into what appears to be some kind of fugue state, moving back and forth, carving a path through the throngs of the audience members who reach out to touch him, hug him or, more often than not, film him. His interactions are impetuous, short and frenetic, almost brusque as though he is desperate to find what he is looking for and that search is always a physical manifestation of intimacy.

Even when he is on stage, this personae of the desperation and frustration as he strives to connect with us on a personal level is made manifest by the way he wrestled his mike from its stand, flinging the inanimate object violently when it refuses to cooperate. He climbs onto lights and monitors or paces back and forth with nervous hands as though he is trapped and desperate to get out, to connect, with us. Sometimes he seems to almost manage a personal moment, a passing high five or sharing the rest of his bottle of cold red wine with the front row.

It’s an act. The moves are just as rehearsed as a pop diva’s choreographed dance sequence, if less overt. The roadies are always at hand to pick up that recalcitrant mic stand and somehow, empathically, know when Berninger will suddenly be compelled to plunge into the crowd and have an improbable 200 feet of mic cord at the ready. We know the moves, we wait for the sudden yet inevitable breakdown of Mr. November, we sing along with Vanderlyle, yet they still affect us.

I know it’s a conceit, but it’s great showmanship which make us believe we have shared something special and it’s what keeps me coming back show after show.

I have been introduced to The National by my husband in 2002 when we moved to Vancouver. I was automatically drawn to their music. Being in a new city, and without knowing anyone, I often spend my free time going for long walks and exploring. Their music provided me with a lot of comfort as I strolled through streets full of people, yet feeling alone. Their dark, full of melancholy music fills me up with longing for more. In times where I need a good cry, when I do chores around the house, when I sit down with a glass of wine, it is my go to music. I love all their albums, but High Violet, Trouble will find me, and Boxer are definitely albums that are on the constant repeat. My husband, a music fanatic, is always on the lookout for the new and greatest bands. He keeps introducing me to new artists, yet after listening to one or two songs from their album, I switch the ITunes to play The National. If someone asked me what my favourite song is it would go like this: "I should live in salt" , "Fireproof", "Graceless", "I need my girl", "This is the last time", "Terrible love", "Sorrow", "Lemonworld" "Mistaken for Strangers", "Fake Empire" "Abel" "Trouble will find me"... the list can go on and on.. I don't think they have ever written a bad song. What I love about their songs is not only the melodies are superbly written but the lyrics are full of meaning (and that is hard to find in music today). The National are bringing back music that matters, music that fills your heart and soul. I had a pleasure of attending one of their concerts here in Vancouver in 2013 at the PNE. It was the most amazing show ever. I am about to turn 40, yet I was screaming like a teenager! Did I mention, I love Matt! I recently watched the documentary "Mistaken for Strangers" and loved this new expose of the band... The National, unique sound, amazing vocals, beautiful melodies, dark lyrics, talented musicians and song writers... I would do anything to see them in concert again!

I had such a great evening seeing The National! Matt's interaction with the crowd was second to none. On multiple occasions throughout the evening he descended into the standing area, and sometimes the audience lost sight of him for what felt like minutes (but probably was seconds, thanks to security).

Irish singer Lisa Hannigan, who provided backing vocals on Sleep Well Beast, joined the National at multiple points during the night. Her enchanting vocals were sadly lost at first, but after a few adjustments she provided a haunting accompaniment to Matt's iconic baritone voice.

Matt's voice often reached new levels of emotion when it transcended into a guttural scream on certain songs.

As the night drew to a close, Matt announced that they were to sing 'the most depressing song we've ever written' - About Today. Hailing from their 2004 EP Cherry Tree, this was a particularly special moment. The crowd fell silent and eyes were drawn once again to the incredible light show behind the musicians.

Having performed a cover of Talking Heads' Heaven, support act This Is the Kit and Lisa Hannigan joined the stage for a beautiful, bittersweet rendition of Born to Beg.

The icing on the cake of a beautiful two hour concert was the final song - Terrible Love. Matt walked through the crowd as we all sang in unison 'it takes an ocean not to break'.

My only regret is that we didn't get to hear Mr November, my favourite song.

The National can be depressing, and there's no denying I felt slightly melancholy this morning, but in today's world it's impossible - at least for me at least - to pretend that everything is going swimmingly.

We need music that examines our deepest emotions to prevent us burying our heads in the sand. And with that, we need the National.

Morrissey’s voice made introductions by way of lyric as The Smiths’ “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I What” was piped over the PA while the band took their position on stage. Berninger and the brothers were joined by a pair of multi-instrumentalists who dabbled in various sounds throughout the night, but whose main contribution came in the form of horns. As Morrissey’s pleas faded behind the three split-screens that acted as backdrops, Berninger was pacing like a caged beast; his neck bent, his head facing the ground, and his long blonde hair obscuring not only his glasses, but most of his facial features as well. “Thank you,” he said curtly, before following the brothers into “Don’t Swallow the Cap”. Everyone was on their feet, with their arms overhead, when the LSD-inspired rainbow light-show was washed out in bubbling crimson waves as the night transitioned into “Bloodbuzz Ohio”. Then we were treated to the first preview of the evening…

“Checking Out” started out with simple synth, then Berninger came in with his deep, introspective, stream-of-consciousness vocals about fucking things up, before a light backbeat and simple chord progression met him somewhere in the middle. The song continued to be very synth and vocal driven from beginning to end. Multiple members of the band have spoken about a new direction forward, and if “Checking Out” is any indication of where the new road leads, I’m certainly along for the ride.

This show was labeled "A Special Night with The National" and was a limited 6 city engagement that included a viewing of a short film directed by Mike Mills (not THAT one) and scored by special arrangements of tracks from IAETF and Q&A with Mike and one of the Dessner's and Matt.

The short film was good, very moving about a woman's (Alicia Vikander) journey from childhood through life and including all the experiences one would imagine a woman has/goes through. To this end the female collaboration on the new album lends itself very well.

The main set was comprised of the new tracks from IAETF and featured appearances by Julien Baker for a couple of songs, as well as the Brooklyn something Chorus/Choir. The live arrangements were complete with string trio and brass duo. The songs were good but most (all but 2 or 3) lacked the energy that one is accustomed to seeing from The National (this is neither a good thing nor a bad thing, I get it, this was a toned down show, to be seen more like an art show). The encore consisted of 3 or 4 songs from the back catalog and Not in Kansas, which packed so many political and societal issues into one song it will make your head spin. They played Fake Empire, Bloodbuzz and The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness which demonstrated the regular energy of a 'The National' show.

Overall a good show, definitely different from the 8 or 9 times I've seen them previously.

I saw The National at the Shaky Knees Festival in Atlanta this May. I have always liked their music but did not have a strong desire to see them live because their music is so mellow. However, they were awesome! I was pretty close to the stage in a general admission area. The sound was great and their energy was great too. I was shocked at how bad ass the lead singer is. He was smashing things on stage and even came out into the audience and crowd "walked" around. I was so close I could almost touch his hand. At the end of the show, they were so thankful of the audience, and it seems like they genuinely care about their fans and want to make sure that they give the best performance possible. I really enjoy their current album, Trouble Will Find Me. "Graceless" and "I Need my Girl" are my favorite songs. They have been around for awhile (I think about 10 years), and their music just keeps getting better, and they stay current. Seeing them live made me more interested in them as a band. I would definitely see them again if they came back into town.

Some people of my age (82) want to try Parachuting, Bungee Jumping or some other daring pursuit while still on this planet but my greatest wish was to go to a live concert of that amazing band, The National!

I was so lucky to be in Brighton last Saturday (7th Dec) to have my wish granted and the whole experience was fantastic - they even played my very favourite song, ‘Light Years’. The song list was well chosen, full of contrast in mood and tempo and the audience responded happily to singing Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks!

Our group included three generations, myself, two daughters and a granddaughter, all National fans.

The Brighton Centre is an excellent venue and the audience was so receptive and enthusiastic. I think Matt himself must have realised that, considering his many ventures down to the front row. At one point, he stumbled and my younger daughter held out her hands to steady him - unfortunately he stood on her toes but all is forgiven, Matt!

I had heard they were a life changing show prior to going, but I was skeptical due to how hyperbolic people tend to be about that kind of thing, but HOLY SHIT.

They had a bit of a rocky start, but once they got their groove on (and Beringer got sufficiently drunk) 2-3 songs in, it was one of the most surreal shows I've ever had the pleasure of attending.

their music is often noted for being a bit mellow, but this show couldn't be less so. when it they weren't reaching swans-level volumes with songs like Mr November, they were delivering some satisfyingly visceral takes on classics like "Don't Swallow the Cap" or "Fake Empire"

seriously, though, this show was insane & I highly recommend seeing them to anyone if they're in your area.

An incredible live performance. Matt and the band bring to life songs from the album with such passion and grit in ways that can't fully be explained. They make you fall in love again with music and songs that you may have listened to hundreds of times and thought you understood. They emotionally charge into anthems and b sides alike and have a great time interacting with the crowd, with Matt often stepping off stage or singing with the crowd around him. The stage presence, comments between songs, goofy dancing by Matt, band mate banter and red solo cups handed out or flung into the crowd all add to the incredible musical performance. I can't recommend seeing them enough. If you're a fan this is a must see show.

scoles01’s profile image

They are absolutely incredible live. Between Matt's shrieking during The Pull of You and the intensity of Bryce and Aaron during rockers like Day I Die (during which Matt waded deep into the crowd) and System, this was certainly not a boring affair! Even the quieter numbers (Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks, Light Years, etc) had a coiled intensity. Matt is super funny on stage, telling clever anecdotes and giving away the mic stand at the end of the concert. The only caveat to the performance was that the whole field reeked of weed, so strong it was making me and my SO sick. Most of the fans just stood there smoking instead of actually having fun and dancing. The band itself was awesome though!

The band will be joined by opening acts, Japanese Breakfast, Lucy Dacus, and Bartees Strange on the road. Together the ensemble of musicians will see stops across the U.S.

About The National

Formed in 1999, The National have established themselves as mainstays of arenas and festivals with sold-out performances and headlining slots around the world. The band has scored five top 10 albums on The Billboard 200, multiple Grammy nominations with 2017's Sleep Well Beastearning the award for Best Alternative Album.

2023 was their best live year yet, selling out shows in North America and Europe, including Madison Square Garden, LA's Greek Theatre and Alexandra Palace in London.

Named one of their “Best Albums of 2023”, Rolling Stone called First Two Pages of Frankenstein ”…a remarkable reassertion of their potency and shared commitment…Nine albums deep, the National found new energy by conjuring not just a great, suffocating fog but also the far light that guides the way out.”

They were also named Forbes's “Band of the Year”, with the article stating, “All The National did in 2023 was release two superb albums … have a brilliant sold-out tour, deliver the festival set of the year with their riveting performance at BottleRock and collaborated with the likes of Phoebe Bridgers, Swift and Sufjan Stevens. The National are so consistently great it becomes easy to take for granted they will be at the top of their game. But even by their lofty standards this was an incredible year.”

And The New Yorker's Amanda Petrusich named it as one of her favorites of the year, saying if you already like “what the National has been doing for the past two-plus decades – making brooding, fraught, atmospheric rock and roll, marked by careful, resonant production and a ribbon of debauched humor—you are likely to also savor First Two Pages of Frankenstein, a heady encapsulation of the band's entire gestalt.”

The National is Matt Berninger (vocals) fronting two pairs of brothers: Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums).

About The War On Drugs

The War on Drugs have steadily emerged as one of this century's great rock and roll synthesists, removing the gaps between the underground and the mainstream, between the obtuse and the anthemic, making records that wrestle a fractured past into a unified and engrossing present. Led by Adam Granduciel, The New Yorker called them “the best American ‘rock' band of this decade” in support of their album, A Deeper Understanding, for which they won the 2018 Grammy for Best Rock Album and were nominated for a BRIT Award for International Group of the Year.

2020 saw the release of LIVE DRUGS featuring live interpretations of songs throughout their career, including off their 2014 breakthrough, Lost In The Dream. Co-produced by Granduciel and Shawn Everett, their fifth studio album, I Don't Live Here Anymore, chips away some of their hazier edges in favor of sharper melodies, broadening the borders of the meticulous yet joyously simple sound [Granduciel] has perfected” (Pitchfork, Best New Music).

Rolling Stone hailed the record for “an updated '60s girl-group sound at once fresh and thrilling.”

Lucius shifted towards a folk rock sound with 2016's Good Grief before taking a break from the studio to join Roger Waters on his Us + Them Tour in 2017-18. Lucius returned to the studio in 2022 with the dance-ready collection Second Nature, which features singles “Next to Normal”, one of NPR Music's top songs of the year and “Dance Around It” the pulsing song with Sheryl Crow and Brandi Carlile.

In addition to their own work, the GRAMMY-nominated Wolfe and Laessig are singers in demand: their voices have graced songs by a host of other artists, including Carlile, The War on Drugs, John Legend, Harry Styles, Jeff Tweedy and Ozzy Osbourne.

As The National unflinchingly traversed the depths of listeners’ anxieties and self-doubts, its indie empire held strong.

The alternative rock staple – composed of Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Scott Devendorf and Bryan Devendorf – electrified Griffith Park on Wednesday for the second Los Angeles stop of its tour celebrating the band’s album, “First Two Pages of Frankenstein.” Despite the tour’s peg to the group’s ninth album, the 26-song set list made space for shiny new songs and reliable classics, reminding the audience of the band’s poignancy and potency as an indie powerhouse with longtime fans.

The show opened with the anxious “Once Upon a Poolside,” where the stage’s lighting subtly shifted from white to pink alongside Berninger’s signature deep, velvet vocals about a relationship on the verge of destruction. While the more somber, piano-heavy track left the stage’s center screens unused, a swift energy shift occurred once the lyrics to “Tropic Morning News” began flashing hypnotically on the screen.

Alongside red and blue strobing flashes during the anthem of isolation, Berninger charmingly alternated between lifting and swaying his semi-stationary mic stand and grooving around the stage, a practice he carried on for the set’s other more exuberant pieces. With “Eucalyptus,” the frontman continued his pairing of emotive vocals and emphatic hand motions as he intimately pointed and directly crooned, “You should take it, ’cause I’m not gonna take it / You should take it, I’m only gonna break it,” to various audience members.

[Related: Album review: Indie supergroup boygenius’ debut album highlights members’ strengths, friendship ]

Across the show’s eclectic, decade-spanning track list, Berninger frequently offered special dedications for certain tracks, including the emotionally anchoring “Sea of Love” for his daughter and the elegant “Quiet Light” for his director and frequent collaborator, Mike Mills. Similarly, for the band’s 2010 favorite “Bloodbuzz Ohio,” Berninger dedicated the track to several hometown friends of the Cincinnati-grown band, leading the theater’s seated crowd to excitedly stand up upon realizing what track was about to play.

“The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness” was met by similar cheers from the audience after its first few notes rang out. Among the harmonious marriage of applause, drum keys, strings, trumpet and even tambourine, Berninger interacted heavily with the crowd by pretending to talk on an attendee’s phone as he warbled the lyrics, “All night you’re talkin’ to God.” For its grand conclusion, the track closed with Berninger’s unrestrained, repeated humming of, “I cannot explain it, oh / Any other, any other way,” allowing the track to rise above its studio version with the newfound vulnerability of the invigorating rendition.

Given moments like these, the theatrical layer of Berninger’s purposeful interactions, expressions and tone shifts allowed The National’s discography to not only match the instrumental excellence of its recorded works but also excel in a live format. Berninger’s stage persona exuded spontaneity and authenticity – from each pose to the conversational tone with which specific lyrics were transmitted, which ultimately furthered the closeness between audience and artist.

The band saved its strongest string of back-to-back tracks for the conclusion of its main set. This fitting final trio included a transcendent performance of “England” enlivened with harmonious trumpets, keys and strings, followed by “Graceless” and “Fake Empire.” For the majority of “Graceless,” Berninger wandered as far from the stage as his wired mic would let him. He wove through the pit and concluded in the right center section, where he swayed and jostled with audience members while repeatedly belting out the track’s concluding lyrics.

From the track’s steady, euphoric piano and drum backing to its lavish lyricism, “Fake Empire” and its triumphant, hope-inducing finale served as a satisfactory concert closer. However, several minutes later, The National returned for a pleasing five-piece encore featuring primarily older works by the band in addition to 2023’s “Your Mind is Not Your Friend.”

After the devastatingly beautiful “Light Years” came a passionate, rock-heavy performance of “Mr. November.” While the rendition would have served as a more than worthy closer, the group had one last trick up its sleeve. Even after the decorative lights and vibrant on-screen visuals went black, the band concluded with an acoustic performance of “Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks.”

Alongside trumpets, tambourines and acoustic guitars, Berninger opted for no microphone as he encouraged audience members to sing along. Even with the crowd’s participation, the force of Berninger’s vocals allowed him to remain audible and guide the intimate, campfire-esque folk conclusion. Across the group’s career, which spans over 20 years, other bands have desperately tried to reinvent themselves with flashy trends and elaborate production. The National masterfully resists this with a raw, stripped-down show that reminds listeners of the band’s roots.

Ultimately, with its gut-wrenching lyrics and vulnerable vocal performances to match, The National’s live presence was anything but graceless.

The National Announces UK and European Tour Dates for 2024

by Em Casalena November 10, 2023, 6:04 pm

American rock band The National has announced additional tour dates in the United Kingdom and Europe for their current 2023-2024 tour. Their original tour dates that span the United States, New Zealand, and Australia will feature special guests Hand Habits, Fleet Foxes, and Annie Hamilton.

Videos by American Songwriter

The recently added tour dates will span countries including Italy, France, Germany, Croatia, Australia, Belgium, Denmark, and the UK. Special guest acts will include This Is The Kit, Bess Atwell, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and Kevin Morby.

The band is also scheduled to perform at several music festivals in 2024, including Hurricane Festival, Southside Festival, INmusic Festival, and Live is Live.

The Grammy-nominated indie rock band will kick off their next stop on the First Two Pages of Frankenstein Tour today in San Francisco, California at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium and close the tour at the Royal Arena in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 6, 2024.

The National’s Matt Berninger recently talked about his experience on this tour in an interview with NME’s Andrew Trendell. “We’ve been playing a lot of really old stuff and some stuff that we haven’t played at all yet, so every night is a disaster in one fun way or another!” said Berninger. Fans can expect an eclectic mix of music from this tour.

Tickets for the US, Australia, and New Zealand leg of the tour are currently on sale via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. General ticket sales for their European and United Kingdom leg of the tour will start on November 15 and 17. Presale tickets for the London and Edinburgh shows will be available on November 14.

The National has carved a niche in the music world with their distinctive Ohio-mixed-with-Brooklyn indie rock sound and profound lyrics. Formed in Cincinnati in 1999, the band consists of Matt Berninger (lead vocals), Aaron Dessner (guitar, keyboards), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Scott Devendorf (bass), and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Their music, often described as dark, melancholic, and richly textured, has resonated deeply with fans worldwide. Old heads will enjoy this tour’s notable mix of tracks from the band’s older and newer albums.

The National’s ascent to fame was marked by Boxer (2007), featuring the hit “Fake Empire,” which solidified their place in the indie rock scene. Another standout album, High Violet (2010), included the hit “Bloodbuzz Ohio”. The band’s most recent albums First Two Pages of Frankenstein and Laugh Track were released in 2023 with positive reviews. The latter is considered a “surprise” album that was announced only a few days before its release.

Tickets for the First Two Pages of Frankenstein Tour are selling out fast, especially in California and Texas. Snatch those seats while you can!

The Eagles have reportedly agreed to a residency at James Dolan’s $2.3 billion music venue The Sphere in Las Vegas after their “Long Goodbye” tour , which ends in the Netherlands and was originally touted as the band’s final tour, according to The New York Post .

The band’s frontman Don Henley will be joined by Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit for 10 weekends beginning in September through December though the total number of shows and terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, sources close to the situation told The Post.

The Post reported that a spokesperson for The Sphere did not comment on any artists who will be performing at the venue unless it has already been announced.

Dolan has reportedly been courting the Eagles since last year. Meanwhile, Dead & Company were originally scheduled to play 24 shows at the spherical theater from May to July, but extended their stay by another 10 dates through the end of August, according to sources.

There were initial reports that Dolan attempted to bring Beyoncé to The Sphere though plans for that have since stalled.

The first band to play at The Sphere was U2 with their last show earlier this month.

The Eagles stopped in Newark’s Prudential Center last April for its “Hotel California” April, while it performed at he same venue for its “Long Goodbye” tour last September.

The Vindys Will Open for Pat Benatar on US Tour

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The Vindys will reach a new milestone this summer when they go on a national tour with a major artist.

The Youngstown-based rock band will be the opening act for Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo for their July 6-Aug. 10 shows. The tour, which was announced today, includes 21 dates, including a July 10 concert at MGM Northfield Park near Cleveland.

Most of the remaining dates are on the East and West coasts.

Jackie Popovec, singer and frontwoman for The Vindys, said her band knew Benatar and Giraldo because they opened shows for the act twice before.

the national rock band tour

Still, she was surprised when The Vindys were asked to be the opener on their summer tour.

“The last time we opened for her, she was the sweetest person to me,” Popovec said. “I was so afraid of her the first time and stayed out of her way.”

But The Vindys must have left an impression on Benatar, because the second time the band opened for her, “she recognized me and gave me a big hug,” Popovec recalled. “After our set she said, “Oh my God, you guys are so good.”

Tickets for the Northfield concert go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday via ticketmaster.com .

With The Vindys’ touring schedule becoming more frequent and widespread, Popovec said the band recently bought a tour van.

The band has two other opening act gigs in the near future.

The Vindys will open for ZZ Top on Wednesday, March 27, at the Stranahan Theater in Toledo; and for Donnie Iris and the Cruisers on April 6 at The Bluestone in Columbus.

The Vindys opened for Iris on March 16 at a sold-out UPMC Events Center near Pittsburgh – the first show by the Pittsburgh rock legend since returning from his bout with cancer.

Four-time Grammy winner Benatar was a rock radio ruler in the 1980s and is considered one of the greatest female voices in rock.

She produced a string of 19 Top 40 hits, including “Hit Me with Your Best Shot,” “Love Is a Battlefield,” “We Belong” and “Invincible.” Benatar has had seven platinum albums and has sold more than 35 million albums worldwide in her career.

She began working with songwriter-producer Giraldo, a Cleveland native, as her musical director early in her career. The two have been married since 1982.

In 2020, Benatar was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but fell short.

In addition to Popovec, The Vindys members are John Anthony, Rick Deak, Owen Davis, Brendan Burke, Nathan Anthony, Kyle O’Donnell, Brian Mayle and Garret Kuchmaner.

AC/DC guitarist Angus Young points to the crowd with his guitar in hand.

For those about to rock, we’re here to help you find tickets.

From May through August, AC/DC is embarking on their European ‘Power Up Tour’ in support of their 2020 album with special guest The Pretty Reckless where they’ll perform in countries like Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, France and more.

“We are thrilled to finally announce the Power Up European Tour,” the band shared on X , formerly Twitter.

“Angus (Young), Brian (Johnson), Stevie (Young), and Matt (Laug) will be joined by (former Jane’s Addiction bassist) Chris Chaney to carry the torch for Cliff (Williams).”

This summer run will be the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band’s first time official trek since the 2016 ‘Rock Or Bust World Tour.’

Most recently, the “Thunderstruck” rockers dusted off their guitars for the 2023 Power Trip Festival where they performed alongside heavy mainstays Metallica , Tool , Iron Maiden , Guns N’ Roses and Judas Priest .

And if you want to see them live overseas this summer, we found tickets for a handful of gigs.

At the time of publication, prices start at $103 USD before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other shows have tickets starting anywhere from $104 to $529 before fees.

Want to take the “Highway To Hell” with Angus, Brian and the band?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about AC/DC’s 2024 European ‘Power Up Tour’ below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

AC/DC set list

On Oct. 7, 2023, AC/DC played their first show in over seven years at Power Trip.

Although it was a festival gig, they didn’t skimp and played 24 tracks.

Here’s what they took to the stage that night, courtesy of Set List FM .

01.) “If You Want Blood (You’ve Got It)” 02.) “Back in Black” 03.) “Demon Fire” 04.) “Shot Down in Flames” 05.) “Thunderstruck” 06.) “Have a Drink on Me” 07.) “Hells Bells” 08.) “Shot in the Dark” 09.) “Stiff Upper Lip” 10.) “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” 11.) “Shoot to Thrill” 12.) “Sin City” 13.) “Givin the Dog a Bone” 14.) “Rock ‘n’ Roll Train” 15.) “You Shook Me All Night Long” 16.) “Dog Eat Dog” 17.) “High Voltage” 18.) “Hell Ain’t a Bad Place to Be” 19.) “Riff Raff” 20.) “Highway to Hell” 21.) “Whole Lotta Rosie” 22.) “Let There Be Rock”

23.) “T.N.T.” 24.) “For Those About to Rock (We Salute You)”

AC/DC new music

Way back in November 2020, AC/DC dropped “POWER UP.”

Their 17th studio album — comprised of 12 raucous tracks — fits right in with the band’s earlier output.

Rockin’ bangers like “Realize,” “Shot In The Dark” and “Wild Reputation” are on par with anthems like “Dirt Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” and “T.N.T.”

This is truly a “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” kind of record.

If you want to have your face melted off by the Aussie rockers once again, you can find “POWER UP” here .

AC/DC band members

According to the band’s statement on social media, here’s who you’ll see onstage — maybe even in their trademark schoolboy uniforms — should you catch them live in Europe.

Angus Young lead guitar, occasional backing vocals (1973–present) Brian Johnson lead vocals (1980–2016, 2018–present) Stevie Young rhythm guitar, backing vocals (2014–present; touring 1988) Matt Laug drums (2023–present) Chris Chaney bass guitar (2024–present)

The Pretty Reckless

At all shows, AC/DC will be joined by frontwoman Taylor Momsen’s band.

Formed in 2009, the hard rockin’ group is known for megahits like “Heaven Knows” and “Make Me Wanna Die.”

If you want to hear them for yourself, you can find The Pretty Reckless’ complete discography here .
