A historical beverage

Would you believe it if I told you that beer is the third most consumed drink in the world? Right up there after water and tea, before both coffee and wine. Beer goes way back and was probably the first alcoholic drink ever to be intentionally produced. The oldest chemical proofs of beer making are almost 6000 years old and were found in the Zargos Mountain of western Iran. Many believe that beer as a beverage is way older than that, up to even 10 000 years old.

In the early days of beer's history, historians believe that the golden beverage served as much moe than just a joyful refreshment. It seems as though beer was used as an important instrument, serving as labour payment as well as nutrition. For example; when the great pyramids were build in Ancient Egypt, some 3800 years ago, beer was given to the workers as payment as well as both nutrition and refreshment. Each labourer earned 4-5 litres of beer per day. Who knows, if it wasn't for beer, perhaps one of the seven great wonders of the world would never have come about.

Beer brewing trend

Most people enjoy a refreshing beer every now and then, but some take their relationship with this golden drink a few steps further. There is a strong trend in recent years in brewing your own beer. Some of these passionate beer lovers travel the world to indulge their senses and explore different types of beer in different parts of the world. Then they gather knowledge, invest in some basic equipment and set out experimenting with the brewing process. Brewing beer is not particularly difficult, but the possibilities to experiment with different flavours, temperatures and other brewing factors to get beer of different alcohol levels, shades and intensity, are many.

Beer, pubs and slot machines: what's the connection? For a lot of British people, beer has got an important social element. It is a drink to be enjoyed with friends, especially at traditional pubs, perhaps while trying your luck with a slot machine. If your local pub has done away with slot machines, don't despair. Play slots online while you drink your beer, and keep track of your gaming with tools like slottracker!

how does one het such a wonderful tour?

We just called ahead and asked for an appointment. It helped that I had some beer-writing credentials, but I think they'd have been happy to oblige anyway.

I really like this site, it's so important to know more about this topic, keep it up and of course every time I have time I'll love to check out again

If you are craving a slice of Heaven while in Victoria Canada, Macaloney's can't be missed! With the friendliest and most knowledgeable staff, you'll find craft beer (from crushable lagers to layered IPA's) and smooth whiskeys to tempt your palate. During our tour, Emily was a gem as she shared various barleys and hops that go into the beers we tasted. They even support other local brewery's by sharing their tanks and equipment. For whiskey lovers, while Macaloney's is early in their aging process, the future is bright as you savor the experience, from the thick legs as you swirl, to the promise of the nose, and the smooth flavor as it warms your soul. Canadians know their beer and Macaloney's is exceptional in the crafting of beer as well as a passion for whiskey.

We were in town on a cruise and the yacht offered a special distillery tour and chocolate tasting. So we booked it immediately and looked forward to the experience. We got to the distillery in our small group of 8. There were a few other's inside enjoying the drinks. The staff had set up a special table for us with 3 tastings with the chocolates paired with each sip. Ocean was our hostess and guide. She was the best. Very happy, fun and explained why the chocolates paired so well with each drink. We thoroughly enjoyed her. After our special tasting and getting to know our other yacht traveler's, we waited a short time for the tour. A few other guests joined us on the tour and we set off for the back of the distillery. Ocean explained the process, let us smell the peat, and we tasted a bit more. Then we moved on to their beers which were equally as delicious. We enjoyed learning about the distillery, the owners, the process and getting to know the fabulous staff. Definitely visit if you are in the area. Very cool place with an incredibly happy staff. Why wouldn't you be if you worked in a distillery and brewery. Macaloney's is a real treasure off the beaten path in Victoria. Thank you to everyone on staff, we had a great visit.

Came thru on a cruise tour - Emily could not have been more awesome, cruises come thru pretty late, then our ship got held at customs, making us later - however Emily was such a gracious hostess, keeping us laughing while educating us! 12/10 recommend stopping by any way you can!

Our last brewery stop was at Victoria Caledonian Brewery & Distillery. Both the distillery and their brewery, Twa Dogs, is under one roof. They claim to be Canada's first equity crowdfunded brewery-distillery. You can become an owner for as little as $250! We dropped in on a Saturday afternoon (around 4:00pm) and it was packed. Their tours ($20.95 to $49.00 per person) are extremely popular. The tasting room is spacious with three large communal tables to sit at along with a few seats at the bar. Merchandise (umbrellas, glassware, hats, t-shirts, etc.) is spread throughout the room. Their happy hour (Monday to Friday, 3:00pm to close) has to be one the best I've seen in a long time. Only $5.00 pints and flights! Super adorable that they allow dogs inside; two were chilling with their owners. - Flight ($9.00 for 4) - we tried the white stout (seasonal), chili chocolate milk stout, parting kiss bourbon barrel age and rapture of folly cherry sour. White stout was like a light coffee lager. Chili milk stout had a hint of spice at the end. Bourbon ale was the smoothest we've sampled for a barrel aged beer. B liked the cherry sour the most but I thought it was just so-so. Another decent brewery but none of their beers really distinguished themselves from the rest.

Took a tour with Norwegian. A very quick tour for $100. Couldn't hear the tour guide because the previous group was being very loud. If 2 groups get split up the n at least start the tasting in the room while we wait.

OK, this review will be colored (or should I write coloured?) in part by the excellent company, and therefore experience, I had in this small brewpub. I actually came in with four friends off of a cruise ship. We are all birders, and had seen our main target species, and then took a nice walk through a local park. We thought it would be nice to stop at a pub before returning our rental car and coming back to the cruise ship. Luckily, one of my companions was as enthusiastic a Yelper as I am, and was all over it, finding a great pub for us. Well done, Leisyka! We went inside, met the helpful, efficient, and delightful servers, ordered our ales, and then were fortunate enough to snag an outside table. The next couple of hours were spent in a pleasant haze of good ale, fun and easy conversation, and in just pure relaxing enjoyment -- the kind you experience when you find one of those places that is a totally great (and perhaps unexpected) experience. I especially enjoyed the IPA, as well as a whiskey-flavored ale (one of my companions bought a six pack to go of these to take home -- airline regulations meant several of us were forced to take one for the team and "help him out " by accepting one of these cans before his flight. Don't thank me -- I'm a giver.

I had some issues with contacting the company about not being able to make a tour (in advance of the tour). The company is new and they are still working out their online and phone communication. The manager (Lee) saw my review and contacted me. He didn't receive my messages of me trying to contact them. I forwarded the e-mail. Lee was very nice and has worked out the issues with me. Thanks!

Awesome selection, great atmosphere, good times, clean facility, knowledgable, fun, amazing beers, lots of options, good memories, knowledgable and friendly staff, would recommend 10/10. Comfortable, memorable, fantastic.

Great place for a taste. Selected this as part of a cruise tour and were sure glad we did. Very tasty beers including a couple great IPA's plus the distillery. Our tour guide (Mike I think, the Geordie), knew his stuff, explained in detail and answered many questions about the process. As a wanna-be distiller myself, we had a great talk about the specifics of what they do and why. Brought home a bottle meself and may just start wearin a kilt. Actually, probably not on that one, but if you've got a couple hours to kill while in BC, be sure to consider this fun place to visit.

I have been here numerous times now. I work at a whisky bar in Vancouver, I also certainly love a good beer. The beer is fantastic I love the variety and their raspberry kolsch is a absolute homerun. When it comes to the whisky I truly believe they can single handedly change the image of Canadian whisky. I have tried their whisky in blind tastings with Macallan, Glenlivet, Wisers, Glenbreton, 2 brewers, Glenkinchie, & Auchentoshan. It can definitely hold its own. The craziest thing is that technically what they are making isnt even whisky yet as in Canada we require ageing of 3 years and 1 day. They are still a year away. I highly recommend visiting as the staff are great and its always nice to see beer and whisky being made side by side. Well done Caledonian you should be very proud of what you are doing.

Heineken sells historic caledonian brewery site to developers.

Heineken has sold Edinburgh’s historic Caledonian Brewery site to the property developers Artisan Real Estate.

caledonian brewery tour

The historic 1.9-acre brewery in Shandon will be turned into new homes and, according to local reports, the developer has already submitted its Proposal of Application Notice with a public consultation scheduled to be held on 7 February 2024.

Prior to Heineken closing the Caledonian Brewery in 2022, it was Edinburgh’s last major brewery and had been founded in 1869 by George Lorimer and Robert Clark. The brewery, along with its B-listed Victorian buildings, reportedly used traditional brewing methods and open square fermenters and direct-fired copper kettles.

Despite passing through a range of ownerships during the past two centuries, the brewery was most recently operated by Heineken from 2008 after it had been acquired as an assets of then owner Scottish and Newcastle. However, in May 2022, Heineken announced the closure of the Caledonian Brewery and placed the site on the market, leaving the historic buildings vulnerable to property developers.

Lamenting about the site being turned into houses, one Redditer stated: “Nothing against new homes, but for Heineken to take over and shut the site (despite making 4.5 billion euro profit this year) at the loss of jobs and economic benefit and move them all down South/abroad feels a sore one. Doesn’t seem to have caused much anger but feels almost criminal. Presumably was allowed to become a residential site, so another institution gone.”

Previous projects from Artisan Real Estate include the New Waverley development in Edinburgh’s Old Town, as well as the new development at Glasgow’s Custom House.

Speaking about the Caledonian Brewery site, Artisan’s regional director David Westwater said that he intended to build “around 170” “one, two and three bed apartments through to duplex units and mews houses”.

Westwater added: “Around one fifth of the homes will be housed in the existing listed buildings”.

The majority of the listed buildings on the site date back to the late 19th to early 20th century and were built in red and white bricks. The existing brewhouse and maltings were said to have been built in 1892 from designs drawn up by Robert Hamilton Paterson who also designed the Royal Scots War Memorial at St Giles Cathedral.

The maltings housed what were known to be the last remaining direct-fired ‘coppers’ to be used in Britain and the brewery’s 130ft red brick chimney is also listed.

Speaking about the agreement to sell the Caledonian Brewery site, a Heineken UK spokesperson said: “We are pleased that a developer of Artisan’s pedigree and experience will now take the site forward” and assured that the new plans for the building would soon meet “the varied demands of modern and sustainable city centre living”.

Responding to the drinks business , regarding concerns for what the sale and proposed development would mean for the historic site, a spokesperson for Heineken added: “As this process unfolds, we encourage community members to actively contribute to the dialogue which will shape the future of the Caledonian Brewery site.”

The spokesperson told db that Heineken was “pleased” that Artisan had “expressed the intention to honour the brewery’s unique heritage and character throughout the development process” which “includes preserving and restoring listed buildings, such as the brewhouse and maltings”.
