This immersive theatre party will make you feel like you've leapt back to 1920s Paris.
Movies about Deloreans , phone booths and hot tubs might all claim otherwise, but travelling through time isn't currently a possibility. But if you'd like a Doctor Who -meets- Midnight in Paris experience — with Ernest Hemingway chatting to Joan of Arc included, too — this immersive Brisbane show lets you definitely pretend otherwise.
Taking over Woolloongabba's Mr Badgers, The Time Travel Cafe is actually a big theatre party. You'll sit, you'll talk with your fellow attendees and you'll feel like you've leapt back to 1920s Paris. Oh, and because Bill and Ted really are pioneers when it comes to messing with all things temporal, you'll also chat with travellers from throughout history.
It's not how you'd usually spend an hour at a bar, but that's a big part of the attraction between Wednesday–Sunday from Thursday, May 26–Sunday, June 26 (with sessions at 6.15pm, 7.30pm and 8.45pm nightly).
Tickets cost $65, and you're encouraged to dress up in either formal or surreal attire — and, if you're wondering what the latter entails, you can be the judge.

Time Travel Cafe in Fair Grove is such a fun diner! They have lots of memorabilia, especially movie oriented. They serve the best Reuben sandwich I have ever had and I have had them across the country! Their hamburgers, pizza and fried okra are wonderful too! It is family owned and operated. Every member is courteous and as quick as good home style cooking can allow. Two thumbs up!
Walking in you are engulfed in an eclectic atmosphere. The young man staffing the counter was polite, courteous and attentive. I had the tenderloin sandwich and fries. It was one of the best tenderloins that I have had in quite a while. The fries were crisp, hot and very flavorful. I definitely would recommend this establishment and will make this a regular stop coming through this area.
The food was good, for where you are. Nothing special, but good. The service was slow, even though it wasn't crowded. I had to ask several times for napkins. Ambiance-nope, not even a little. It has the typical appearance of a 1970's truck stop.
Food is always good. Service excellence and ambiance even better. I would and do recommend this establishment.
We tried this place on a whelm. We absolutely love it and now it is highly recommended in our house. The owners are so nice. The food is amazing. You absolutely must stop.
We were traveling from St. Louis to Oklahoma. Outside of Springfield, MO we wanted to try someplace local but off the beaten path. After looking thru Yelp, we noticed "Time Travel Cafe" located in a small town north of Springfield. What a great place, I had the pulled pork sandwich with tater tots and my wife had the pork tenderloin sandwich with tater tots. Both sandwiches and the tots were awesome! We enjoyed the food so much we also ordered two slices of their homemade cheesecake. Once again the desserts were awesome! The reviews don't lie, the customer service was as good as the food! It's a family run business that's worth the trip! It will be our food break stop every time we are in the area! Check this great place out! It's worth the trip!
Fun, unique burger, sandwich and pizza shop on the old downtown square. Service was friendly and great. Loved the Backwoods BBQ burger and the fried mushrooms. Will definitely be going back.
Time Travel Cafe is such a fun place to go to. It's food is so good and the customer service is outstanding.
Wonderful place to eat!! Was in town for business and found the Cafe on Yelp. A family run business with excellent service and quality food. Felt welcome and like old friends from the moment we walked in, definitely recommend and will be back.
Was in town delivering packages for Amazon and was getting a little hungry after my shift so decided to stop here. All I can say is Wow! The food was incredible. The tater tots were great and the bbq sandwich was amazing. the staff was incredibly friendly. Nice little mom and pop shop as well. Fun vibes. I live in Springfield but will certainly be making a trip back up here for this place. Can not speak highly enough of this little cafe. I would have had pictures but it was so good that I devoured it before I had a chance.

Review: THE TIME TRAVEL CAFE at the Canvas Club
Review by Josie Montano & Robert McLachlan
Stopping first for a timeless cocktail in the bar next door, we waited in anticipation for the venues doors to open at exactly 6pm. The suggestion was that we take the opportunity to visit as the liberated version of ourselves with no common expectations from our current timeline.
Once we stepped into the venue, we not only entered into the world of the 1920’s but were ushered out the back to the speak-ezy bar hidden behind the Tailor shop. We noticed a variety of ‘travellers’ from different timelines mingling with the guests and each other. We were quickly accosted by one of the historical characters who lured us and a small number of guests to a section of the cafe to deliver their strong and entertaining performance.
We won’t spoil the experience by mentioning the characters or the evening’s agenda, but going in with the inside knowledge that you can participate in a variety of ways may be beneficial. A patron may decide to just sit at one of the tables and observe the going-on and potentially be joined by one of the ‘travellers’ who may divulge secrets or hints on how to immerse yourself further; or you may follow the ‘travellers’ as they go about their own missions. Or if you are competitive there’s also an opportunity to partake in a type of escape-room timed twist without the escape….sorry can’t say anymore other than the words time machine, fractal sump and paradox!
The brilliant cast gave outstanding performances and impressively stayed in character throughout, bravo Brie Jurrs, Gina Tay Limpus, Matthew Hannibal Butler, Nadia Milford and Wayne Jennings. Kudos also to the Stage Manager: Karina White, Assistant Stage Manager: Ryan Grice and Assistant Stage Manager: Jade Brider.
The one hour immersive theatre experience is presented by Spacefold Technology, and hosted at the Canvas Club, Woolloongabba, an ideal forum for the historical time travel narrative to be performed in. The Creative Producer James Elliott, together with the Director: Kristian Santic are to be commended for the authentic and historical world they created within such a small space.
If you are a lover of history, time travel, are lured by the unusual with an ‘absurdist twist’ as well as want to become a part of history, then this theatre experience is for you. If you are feeling adventurous the request is that you dress in surreal formal attire, yes we had to google it too! But the added hints were to research what a "Salvador Dali Party" would entail. Really it could mean anything, so check your wardrobe or your dress-ups box for anything a little extra and out there, throw it all together and step out for the evening. It’s fun as well as liberating!
Tickets still available during The Anywhere Festival until the 23rd May. Have a drink or cocktail at the bar next door, book a table for a bite afterwards and enjoy the fun-filled night where anything and everything can happen. Make the time! www.thetimetravelcafe.com

I really enjoy this game. The lighthearted mood to it. It's a nice way to unwind after a hard day of work. I think I broke the game. Maybe put in some code where if the numbers get negative somehow it automatically changes them back to positive. Every time I click it just gets to be a bigger negative number, which makes sense, I'm deducting time from a negative number. But it doesn't tic down or move. It's just stuck there unless I click and get even further from zero. It seems to have happened because I was cooking too fast but I'm not sure. Like I put a new one in while taking an old chopped item out at sort of the same time.
Very buggy. Items get stuck and can't be moved, cluttering the view. Sometimes ingredients get stuck on the chopping board and can't be cut or removed, but they react to dragging "a little bit". Also how to get rid of the poop?
Also there is nothing idle about it, so adding the idle tag feels inappropriate.
Hello! This is our preview version of which was given as little time as possible within the framework of the game jam. In the future, you will change your mind, because we will iterate the project, add a new "Warehouse" scene, to replenish food supplies in the refrigerator (now they are endless), fix the main cooking mechanics, which unfortunately turned out to be a bug, add a balance of recipe costs, and most the main thing is to connect saving progress. Thanks for your comment and have a nice day
Sounds good. Good luck. If the stuck-items bugs get fixed, this could become quite an interesting game.
I had this too! I like to think that the bug forces us to dice the veggies julienne style :D

Book review: Time travel tear-jerker set in a Japanese coffee shop
BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD
By Toshikazu Kawaguchi
Translated by Geoffrey Trousselot
Pan Macmillan/ Paperback/ 208 pages/ $18.95/ Books Kinokuniya
You might want to have tissue paper on hand while reading this book.
The story is set in a mysterious coffee shop called Funiculi Funicula, which allows people to time travel. Tucked in a back alley in Tokyo, it appears to be stuck in the Meiji era (1868 to 1912), when it supposedly opened for business.
Adapted from a play written by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, 48, the novel has hints of being scripted for the stage.
Published in Japan in 2015, it was well-received. The English translation by Geoffrey Trousselot was published this year. A Japanese movie of the same name was released last year.
Kawaguchi shows his depth of understanding relationships and love through four main characters, each with his or her own reason for wanting to travel through time.
They include Kohtake, a nurse who wishes to receive a handwritten letter from her husband Fusagi, who has Alzheimer's disease, before he forgets her; and bar owner Yaeko Hirai, who wants to see her younger sister for the last time.
Time travellers must return to the present by drinking a cup of coffee before it gets cold, or they turn into a ghost.
There are other rules to follow as well, including not leaving their seat or the cafe when they time travel.
Any hope that a time traveller might have about changing the course of the future is quickly squashed by the cafe's waitress, a serious and reticent university student named Kazu Tokita.
"When you go back, no matter how hard you try, the present won't change," Kazu says to Fumiko Kiyokawa, who wants to try to change her boyfriend's decision to move to the United States.
The characters struggle with what to say - or not to say - knowing that the outcome will not change. They also wonder if they will be able to right a wrong.
They attempt to manage their emotions in the short time frame they are given, but all that goes out the window once they are confronted with the past.
Although the reader knows how things will end anyway, it is during the time travel journey that Kawaguchi gives us the missing piece of the puzzle. These are the moments when the tissue paper comes in handy.
It is also when Kawaguchi surprises by flipping the character's perceived situation on its head with little plot twists which are too good to give away here.
But suffice it to say some of the frustrations a few of the characters go through are due to misunderstandings. Instead of wishing to turn back time, perhaps the focus should be on changing our minds and hearts.
Despite the novel's brevity, every word, action and expression moves the story with sufficient momentum, though with little room to breathe.
The story certainly works as a play, but Kawaguchi could afford to further flesh out his characters in a book. What a shame that the ending of each story is premature and comes just as the reader becomes attached to the character.
If you like this, read: A Man Called Ove (Hodder & Stoughton, 2016, $18.95, Books Kinokuniya), a dark comedy about Ove, a grumpy widower who is unbending in his principles and routines and is convinced that he is surrounded by idiots. All that changes when he lets down his defences.
