Knowsley Safari Park review

June 7, 2016 by Jenni

Knowsley safari park review

A couple of weeks ago we took Lucas to Knowsley Safari Park *. The safari park is an impressive 5 mile wild animal safari drive as well as a walk round park like you would expect of a zoo. It is currently home to over 750 fascinating animals.

Knowsley safari park

I really couldn’t have picked a worse day to go, it was pouring down to the point that we couldn’t see out of the windscreen driving there on the motorway. However, we didn’t let this dampen our spirits and were excited to see the animals up close.

Knowsley safari park

As you enter the drive, there are 3 paying kiosks to minimise the wait of entering. You follow the drive round and can either turn left to the car park to walk around or continue straight to go into the safari drive. There are also some toilets that you can park next to if you need to use them before going into the safari part. We went round the safari first, my favourite part of the drive is seeing the lions walking so close to the car in their enclosure and couldn’t wait to see Lucas’ reaction. Unfortunately, due to some changes in the lion group they weren’t in their normal enclosure as they needed to be monitored closely. We still saw them but it wasn’t the same experience as I have previously had, I will check before we go next whether they have been reintroduced.

Knowsley safari park

Due to the rain a lot of the animals were hiding, the deer were out in full force, nothing put them off! When we did spot the animals though, it was amazing, seeing them mixing together in a natural type habitat without any bars. We spotted a couple of Zebra, Rhinos with babies, Buffalo, Tigers and Camels. We didn’t go into the monkey enclosure as we were booked onto the Baboon Bus at 12. The safari drive took us about 40 minutes but would have taken longer if it wasn’t for the rain and if the lions had been out.

Knowsley safari park

The weather cheered up and we parked up and had a bit of our picnic before getting on the Baboon Bus. The bus takes you around the full safari, not just through the monkey enclosure. The bus driver introduced himself and said he wasn’t a tour guide but would tell us anything he could. Turns out he knew pretty much everything there was to know, he was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout the journey, pointing out the animals and telling us about them.

Knowsley safari park

Once we drove into the monkey enclosure they were jumping all over the bus, swinging from rope that hung from the bus. Lucas found it highly amusing, touching the window where the monkeys were. We spent about 20 minutes in the monkey enclosure and probably just under an hour and half on the bus.

Knowsley safari park

Once the bus pulled back into the park we had a walk around looking at the other animals. There are some more lions in the park, we also saw sea lions, tortoises, meerkats, birds of prey, elephants and my favourites, the giraffes. There is a bat cave but we decided not to venture in their until Lucas is a little older. There are also fairground rides and a train that you can go on, we will definitely go on the train next time we visit.

Knowsley safari park

We had a fab day out and even with the rain at the beginning it didn’t spoil it. There is plenty to see and do whatever the weather x

I love visiting zoos with my two small children, have never ventured into a safari park yet though but have heard great things about Knowsley Safari Park. It looks like a great day out. The Baboon Bus, though! OMG haha. Have you seen the On The Buses holiday film where they’re driving in the safari park and there’s chimps getting on and driving it and a lion prowling in at the back?! I’d be too scared of this happening (even though I know it couldn’t!) I’d be papping myself lol!

Knowsley Safari Park

  • Read 1 Review

Situated on the Earl of Derby’s estate, just outside Prescot in Merseyside, Knowsley Safari Park offers visitors the chance to take a 5-mile drive in their cars through enclosures filled with wildlife such as elephants, rhinos, bison, zebra, baboons, wildebeest, emus, tigers, and lions.

The Walkabout Area allows visitors to see some of the animals from outside their vehicles. Animals here include elephants, giraffes, otters, and meerkats. Mizzy Lake Farm features farmyard animals such as cows, rabbits, and pigs, while the Bug House is filled with insects, reptiles, and amphibians. The Sea Lion Show features performances from the park’s resident Californian sea lions. When not performing they can be observed through a large underwater viewing window.

Knowsley Safari Park also features a small amusement park with a number of rides catering to small children and Aerial Extreme, a high ropes adventure course.

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park – Safari Parks in the UK

West Midland Safari & Leisure Park safari park offers an unforgettable experience that can be enjoyed as a day trip or a longer getaway. While the luxurious safari lodges provide an incredible opportunity to get up close and personal with animals such as tigers, rhinos and elephants, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy too, including a drive-through safari and village walk .

Whether you opt to drive your own car or join a guided minibus tour, the safari drive will take you on a thrilling journey through habitats filled with African lions, giraffes, zebras, wild dogs, cheetahs, and antelopes. Additionally, the Wild Asia area offers a chance to see Indian rhinos, swamp deer, and blackbucks.

This part of the park is home to penguins, bats, creepy crawlies, sealions, snakes, meerkats, lemurs, fish and hippos.

The safari park now includes an Adventure Theme Park . Along with the animal attractions , visitors can also enjoy a variety of rides and attractions such as virtual reality experiences, rollercoasters, and log flumes, among others. However, please note that these rides require an additional fee.

Longleat Safari Park – UK Best Safari Park?

Longleat Safari Park , nestled in the picturesque Wiltshire countryside, is an ideal destination for a family-friendly day out. As you stroll through the main park, you’ll come across various enclosures housing an array of creatures, from creepy crawlies to wild cats and primates.

At specific times during the day, you can board a jungle cruise and venture out onto the vast lake on the estate. If you’re fortunate enough, you might catch a glimpse of hippos in the shallow waters or the silverback lowland gorilla and his family residing on the island in the center. Keep your eyes peeled! Additionally, the boat ride provides an opportunity to feed the resident sea lions, who swim and frolic beside the vessel, hoping to snag a fish.

Naturally, the highlight of your visit to Longleat is the self-drive safari. The Wiltshire plains are home to three of the big five: lions, rhinos, and Anne the elephant, as well as cheetahs, wolves, tigers, and deer. Provided you drive responsibly and keep your windows closed, the animals are familiar with vehicles and can offer some extraordinary encounters.

Longleat also offers additional experiences

Such as giraffe feeding, a lemur walkthrough, and monkey mayhem. Also during the latter, the rhesus macaques have free reign to clamber all over your vehicle and take whatever piques their interest! You may opt to ride the safari bus for this reason.

Longleat Safari Park is dedicated to conservation efforts on a global scale. Whether it’s breeding programs aimed at restoring the populations of wild dogs and black rhinos in Tanzania or supporting the conservation work of the Red Panda Network in Nepal, Longleat depends on contributions and purchases from its guests to aid in these vital endeavors. When you visit Longleat, you’ll be making a significant contribution towards these efforts.

Port Lympne – Best Safari Parks in the UK

One of the most impressive safari parks in the UK is Port Lympne, situated in Kent . This game reserve offers the nearest experience to Africa in the UK, complete with safari drives and a range of lodge-style accommodations for an ultimate overnight stay.

On foot, you can explore various enclosures within the main park that are home to magnificent animals like lynxes, gorillas, and brown bears. While larger pens house lions, tigers, and cheetahs. You can also plan your visit alongside the ranger talk schedule for a chance to learn more about these incredible creatures and have any queries addressed!

Similar to Longleat, the park features vast open plains where giraffes, zebras, and antelopes reside. However, the only way to observe them is by joining a tour led by a knowledgeable guide who will take you and a group of others out into the wilderness on a safari canter. You’ll have the good fortune of seeing these animals in their natural habitats (or as close to it as possible in the Kent countryside), as well as rhinos, elephants, wild dogs, and other uncommon species fenced in.

What makes this place really special is the Aspinall Foundation’s link to conservation efforts in Africa and beyond. Thus Port Lympne has a hugely successful breeding programme that has returned various animals to the wild, including five eastern black rhinos, two cheetahs and over 60 gorillas. At each enclosure, you’ll be able to read whether the animals inside are candidates for reintroduction, and there are dedicated teams at the park who will be more than willing to tell you more when you visit.

You can also stay at Rhino Lodge, Port Lympne animal reserve .

Woburn Safari Park – Safari Parks in the UK

At Woburn Safari Park, you can witness over 80 rare and endangered species in their Bedfordshire home. Similar to other safari parks in the UK, your adventure may begin with a drive-through safari, allowing you to explore different regions of the world from the comfort of your own car. Here, you can see rare horses, bison, wildebeest, camels, southern white rhinos, buffalos, giraffes, monkeys and zebras.

The Kingdom of the Carnivores is a must-visit area at Woburn Safari Park, where you can catch a glimpse of Amur tigers, timberwolves, black bears, and lions, each residing in their spacious enclosures. The self-drive safari loop takes around 60 minutes to complete, and the adventure doesn’t end there. You can explore the foot safari and spot smaller animals such as parrots, meerkats, wallabies, otters, lemurs, sea lions, penguins, squirrel monkeys, red pandas, and many more.

When you purchase a ticket to Woburn Safari Park, you’re supporting the team’s efforts to sustain the animal population on-site, as well as their involvement in critical conservation work around the world. The park supports various projects, including the International Elephant Foundation, the Wildcats Conservation Alliance, and Helping Rhinos. By visiting the park, you’re contributing to these worthy causes.

Real life Paddington Bear arrives at Knowsley Safari this Easter

Visitors can see Andean bears Bahai and Chui on the Foot Safari from Good Friday.

Knowsley Safari is gearing up for an adventure-packed Easter as it prepares to open the doors to ‘Bear Country’ on the Foot Safari experience, where visitors can meet the newest residents Bahia and Chui.

The male and female are Andean bears - the species that inspired the children’s literature character Paddington Bear. They are also known as the Spectacled Bear due to their distinctive facial markings. The Andes mountains extend through seven South American countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Peru, where Paddington comes from.

Families can come and see the bears from Good Friday, March 29. But there’s more to this event than just a fun day out; Bahai and Chui’s arrival marks the beginning of a vital campaign aimed to protect the species.

Knowsley Safari Park’s campaign, in conjunction with the Peru-based Spectacled Bear Conservation Society, will officially kick off on World Bear Day, March 23, as they aim to raise awareness and support towards the species that are currently facing the threat of extinction and classified as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List.

Visitors to ‘Bear Country’ will be able to see the striking differences between Bahia and Chui, as weighing in at 140kg, male Chui towers over the 69kg female Bahai. The bears, who relocated recently from Jersey Zoo after a decade-long stay, are settling into their new home at Safari securely.

Lucy Petrie, carnivore animal manager at Knowsley , said : “We’re really pleased with how quickly Bahia and Chui have settled in at Knowsley and we’re looking forward to educating visitors about these very special bears.

“During the Easter holidays, we’ll be offering interactive experiences including talks, touch tables and activities to educate and inspire everyone who visits. Guests will be able to observe Bahia and Chui while learning about the conservation methods we’re using to help protect their relatives in the wild."

Petrie added: “It’s an action-packed bear-themed family day out at Knowsley Safari this Easter as guests will also be able to take part in an Easter-themed Bear Hunt, including puzzles, photo opportunities and prizes – all included in the main admission price.”

Places For Pleasant Recreation in Moscow Region

knowsley safari park stay over

We suggest you a review of sanatoriums, hotels, lodges and guesthouses around the capital. Moscow region has a big variety of places for rest and these are the most noteworthy of them.

YAKOR GUESTHOUSE

Almost like an American motel, but situated at the Oka River

Yakor

There are: equipment for winter sports, a massage salon, a beauty shop, a bath-sauna with a sweating room and a font, billiards, karaoke. Things to do: go to Tarusa, visit the House-Museum of Tsvetaeva’s family, the Musatovsky slope, memorable places connected with Paustovsky.

Yakor is arranged by principles of an American motel. Rooms are clean; there is a shower, TV, towels, and heat if it is necessary. In some rooms, you will also find a refrigerator. Almost full size wooden fishes act as key charms. In warm season, you can buy cheap fruits, vegetables and flowers in a nearby shop.

If you want to have some cultural adventures, you can go to Tarusa or visit a place where Marina Tsvetaeva wanted to be buried. In addition, there opens a wonderful view over Oka River with its fogs and plains.

Tarusa, Decembrists Street, 4 +7 48435 2 55 81 tarusa-yakor.ru

The price of a double room starts from 1250 rubles (€12.55).

NIKOLA-LENIVETS

«Beaubourg», «Lighthouse» and other land-art objects in the park: romanticism in a spirit of «The True Detective»

Nikola Lenivets

There are: a kitchen-dining room with three meals a day, sledges, ice-boats, skis and snow-scooters, a Russian bath, hootch and other gifts of local farmers. Things to do: walk around art objects.

7 things you NEED to do in Moscow this winter

knowsley safari park stay over

1. Get your skates on

People at the opening of the Street Rink outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park, Moscow.

People at the opening of the Street Rink outdoor skating rink in Gorky Park, Moscow.

Young or old, sporty or couch potato, it doesn’t matter – ice skating is THE quintessential winter activity in which pretty much everyone Muscovite partakes. For that reason, Russians tend to be quite good at skating, but don’t let that put you off if you’re a beginner. Public ice skating is more about embracing the crisp winter mornings here than hardcore sporting endeavor, so expect high spirits and friendly atmospheres.

What’s more, there are a staggering 45 year-round skating rinks to choose from in Moscow. Gorky Park’s rink is a must-see that allows for pleasant strolling, coffee drinking, and art viewing afterwards. The VDNH rink is also worth checking out for the park that surrounds it, offering majestic light shows, fountains, and Soviet relics. For a more open-plan skating arena, head to Sokolniki Park, where you’ll find a whopping 5,400 square meter rink.

2. Sweat out the winter blues

Sandunovsky baths

Sandunovsky baths

We challenge you to find a more relaxing atmosphere than a Russian banya . You simply won’t – this tradition will warm up your body and your soul. Sure, being practically boiled in a firewood sauna and then hit with a birch tree while half-drunk might not be everyone’s idea of fun, but trust us, they’re missing out on this unique detox.

Check out the Sanduny bathhouse for the most jaw-dropping Russian relaxation experience imaginable, characterized by palatial columns and mosaics, as well as stylish cold water pools for you to dive into after your beat-down. Happy steaming!

3. Light up your life

Teatralnaya Square

Teatralnaya Square

Moscow city center’s mesmerizing light display is not only the pride of the city, but of half of Russia too, who travel to the capital specifically for the luminous spectacle. In the lead up to New Year, the areas around Red Square, Teatralnaya Square, Nikolskaya Street, Pushkin Square, and Tverskoy Boulevard become a neon ocean.

The lights are a significant annual investment for the Moscow council, not least because they tend to replace the lights with new ones year on year, but it’s usually deemed worth it by admiring onlookers and tourists. If this display doesn’t get you in the festive spirit, nothing will.

4. Shout your lungs out at an ice hockey match

knowsley safari park stay over

If there’s one sport Russians are particularly passionate about, it’s ice hockey. Go and experience the fierce athleticism, frequent on-rink fights, and rowdy crowds for yourself, and you’ll see what all the fuss is about. In contrast to Russian football matches, where there’s often little more than atmospheric novelty to be had, the country can take pride in having world-class hockey players, whose quality will be immediately obvious.

The best place for a match is the slick 12,100-seater VTB Ice Palace, home to CSKA’s ice hockey outfit.

5. Step back in time

Woman pulls a sled with a child on frozen pond in Moscow, Russia

Woman pulls a sled with a child on frozen pond in Moscow, Russia

Fancy a glimpse of the Orthodox Christmas atmosphere as it was in the Russian Empire? Look no further than Novodevichy Convent , a picturesque, snow-covered religious haven with a history stretching back five centuries. Initially used as a fortress for noblewomen, this stunning riverside ensemble is now a functioning monastery and peaceful cloister that boasts four stunning cathedrals, Kremlin-like walls, and a spectacular icon collection. Holy, placid, and serene, the convent is a uniquely antiquate enclave that’s night and day from the bustling modernity that surrounds it.

6. Wallow in the snow

A view of a rebuilt 18th century palace in Moscow's Tsaritsyno Park.

A view of a rebuilt 18th century palace in Moscow's Tsaritsyno Park.

Sometimes, you don’t need anything particularly ambulative to feel at home in a city. In fact, nothing embodies Moscow’s winter wonderland better than a mere stroll in one of its stately parks, sure to be piled high with endless snow dunes throughout the winter.

For a pleasant outing beloved by Muscovites and tourists alike, check out the grandiose Tsaritsyno Park , where nature peacefully co-exists alongside tsarist palatial pomp. The more sizeable Kolomenskoye Park is also worth checking out for a longer excursion that packs in medieval wooden architecture, never-ending rows of trees, and a postcard-ready river view.

However, if you want to really get off the beaten track and experience the winter pristine snow, head further outside the city limits to one of Moscow’s forests – Izmailovsky Park, Timiryazevsky Park, or Elk Island National Park, for example (all accessible by metro).

7. Get festive at the city’s many Christmas markets

knowsley safari park stay over

Sip on a mulled wine, soak up the bright lights, haggle over a matryoshka  doll with Putin’s face on it. Moscow’s Christmas markets are an absolutely essential tourist experience, with the most popular fair set up right on the Kremlin’s doorsteps on Red Square. Indeed, those quaint stalls in the heart of the city take some beating against the backdrop of St. Basil’s Cathedral and the illuminated GUM shopping center. There are some other cool festive spots throughout the city, though – Gorky Park, for one, will be decked out in lights and international food stalls, while the Izmailovo Kremlin offers an unmissable experience in the world of kitsch souvenir shopping from vodka to pottery, to (sort of) authentic samovars.
