In 2024, work is underway on the Elephant Valley, revitalizing this section of the park and giving the elephants more space to roam and additional enrichment.

It will also include an overhead walkway where you’ll be able to look down at the elephants from above. The reconstruction project will reopen as the Denny Sanford Elephant Valley.

The new additions will allow for greater immersion and more interactivity between guests and the elephants while also shining a light on conservation efforts around the globe, making it a great educational experience for kids.

The project is planned for completion in 2025, though no exact date has been set. Expect construction in this section of the park throughout 2024.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Time at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Disabled Accessibility

San Diego Safari Park Hours

The San Diego Safari Park is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the summer . In the fall / winter & spring the doors close anywhere from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

As always, the time of operation is subject to change. Please check with the park before heading out for your adventure!

Best times of year to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Since Safari Park has a desert-like climate, the animals are active year-round! The typical offseason is during wintertime if you want to beat the crowds. Although, you do risk more rain, and other attractions shut down, such as the hot air balloon due to possible inclement weather.

However, if you're wondering about the best time of day, the morning is best! The weather is cooler, and you can beat the crowds.

Stay Nearby

To maximize your time in the park, and to see the animals when they’re at their most active with minimal crowds, come early. The best way to arrive bright and early is to stay at a hotel near the Safari Park.

Personally, I suggest booking a room at The Fin Hotel . Its family-friendly atmosphere is great for parents and children while its chic, boutique layout lends it a touch of luxury.

The Fin Hotel is just a few blocks away from the shore at Oceanside too, so you can easily hop over to the beach. And don’t forget to pick up an All-inclusive Go City San Diego pass for park admission plus discounts on beach gear like surfboard and kayak rentals to make your stay complete!

Bring Sunscreen and Hats

There isn't a lot of shade when you're out and about on safari's or walking between exhibits. Be sure to bring some sunscreen and a hat to stay protected from the sun.

Get the App!

The app is a lifesaver when you look for a way to plan your day at the San Diego Safari Park. The app features a map of the Park, so you know where you are at all times.

Also, the app has this notable feature where you can select the animals you want to see. From there, it will tell you which exhibits you need to go to, so you don't spend most of your day wandering around!

The best time to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park is in the springtime, during birthing season. The busiest times of the year are from June-August and during school vacations. The park offers many nursery exhibits to see the baby animals, including enclosures that let visitors watch them as they take their first steps or are fed from a bottle.

Regardless of the time of year, the best time of day for guests to visit is in the morning as the animals tend to be most active then, before the temperatures reach afternoon highs. Tip: To avoid crowds, plan to visit the park on a weekday if possible.

The Exhibits

There is so much to see and do at the Safari Park, especially at the extensive free-range animal enclosures in the park – the park has a whopping 13 habitats, each with their own theme.

Tiger Trail

Most visitors begin their visit with a trip through Tiger Trail, where you can watch the elusive Sumatran Tigers in their habitat as you walk along the path. You’ll have many opportunities to see the Safari Park’s tigers up close in three separate yards; one has a cooling waterfall and one includes a pool.

Africa Tram

Definitely plan on riding the Africa Tram, which runs from 10am – 5:15pm daily. It’s an exciting, open-air expedition aboard a safari tour vehicles, and you’ll wind through all of the various animal habitats on a relaxing adventure. The ride path takes you around some of the field exhibits, giving you a chance to connect with the animals on a closer level. The entire tram ride is approximately 25 minutes.  You can catch the tram at the African Outpost.

Lion Camp offers an exciting opportunity to view these incredible creatures up close. You’ll be able to observe natural lion behaviors as the cats romp in the grass, explore the logs and rocks, or rest in the cool shade. Let the little ones walk right up to the large glass panels for some eye-to-eye moments!

Gorilla Forest

The Gorilla Forest is a large enclosure that houses a variety of different animals in addition to the gorilla; including several birds, lemurs, and the Hidden Jungle – which is a  fun off-the-beaten-path area to explore with little ones.

Elephant Valley

Elephant Valley is comprised of two large exhibit yards for the Park’s African elephant herd. The Park actually rescued the founder herd from a scheduled cull in Swaziland in 2003, and since then, have celebrated several births!

Tips for Families

  • Be sure to bring snacks, water or a water bottle, and a picnic lunch if you don’t plan on buying lunch inside the wild animal park. There are plenty of tables throughout where you can eat the food you brought from home.
  • Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, and bring a stroller for younger kids who might get tired from walking around the Park all day. Strollers are also available for rent at the Park.
  • Arrive early, at opening time if possible – temps are cooler and you’ll see more animals out and about.
  • There are four separate play areas, including one “cool zone” with water misters during the spring and summer months. Kids will love these when it’s hot out. The Park also has misting fans on many of the paths.
  • Bring a swimsuit/towel for kids who want to make a big splash in the Savanna Cool Zone.
  • Pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen – it can get warm at the Park, especially during the spring and summer months.
  • The park is open even in the rain. In fact, it’s an excellent time to go, when many of the animals may come out to soak it up. And you might feel like the only person in the whole park.

Regardless of how you spend your day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, there is truly no other place like it in San Diego. Be sure to check out our San Diego Zoo Guide if you plan on checking that out, as well!

Getting Around San Diego with Ease

San Diego is a sprawling patchwork of neighborhoods that spreads across 325 square miles. As the second largest city in California, San Diego has two million fewer residents, or nearly half as many people per square mile, as Los Angeles. It has an unbelievable quarter of the people per square mile as San Francisco, where residents are packed like sardines into 47 square miles – a fact that may actually make getting around easier. Each city has its own challenges when it comes to navigating from Point A to Point B, and San Diego’s challenge is how spread out the city is – its blessing is also its curse.

As a savvy San Diego traveler, you can get anywhere you want to go in San Diego when you understand the many options available to you. There are city buses, trolleys, a Sprinter light rail, Amtrak Pacific Surfliners and Coaster commuter trains, along with rental cars, taxis and private cars, shuttles, the Coronado Ferry, water taxis, pedicabs, and horse-drawn carriages. Whew! That doesn’t even count the many city tours you can take.

Here are the biggies:

Rental Cars

Most people want to rent a car on vacation so they have maximum flexibility and can go on their own schedules. When you fly into San Diego, there are no car rental businesses in the airport. However, there are free shuttles from the airport to all the major car rental properties nearby. Keep in mind that parking is limited, especially in Downtown San Diego, and that ticketing and towing are aggressive.

Taxi, Lyft, Uber

San Diego taxis are safe and reliable. On special occasions like New Year’s Eve, for example, it can be difficult to impossible to get a cab, but for the most part, it’s easy. Rate sheets for flat rate fares are listed on Silver Cab’s website and San Diego Cab’s website to give you an idea of pricing. Before agreeing to a cab, discuss the fare. Do they charge a flat rate, by the mile, by the minute? Lyft and Uber are also active in San Diego, if you use those services when you travel.

San Diego MTS Trolleys and Buses

The San Diego Trolley is part of the San Diego Metro Transit System (MTS). There are three main trolley lines in the city. The Green Line goes from Downtown north along the coast and east through Mission Valley to Santee. This is what you would take to get between Hotel Circle and the Convention Center or Downtown and Chargers Stadium. The Orange Line runs between the Santa Fe Depot Downtown and El Cajon. If you wanted to go to the free Friday evening concerts in El Cajon, take this line. The Blue Line runs from Downtown to the border with Mexico. If you want to try out some Baja-med cuisine in Tijuana, this is your line.

The Metro Transit System (MTS) has a web of bus routes all across the city of San Diego, which includes La Jolla and Escondido. You can type in the name of the hotel you’re staying at and the destination you’d like to go to for step-by-step directions in their trip planner. For example you can get from Downtown to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park near Escondido by a series of buses. You can also get to La Jolla from Downtown on a single bus.

North County Transit District

In North County, the North County Transit District bus system is similar to the MTS with Breeze buses covering much of North County. They also have a Flex mini-bus that you can reserve seats on, which serves Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Solana Beach. It’s a good choice if you want to visit LEGOLAND California , the outlet mall, or any of Carlsbad’s other attractions on your own timeline. There are also trip planning tools on their website.

The Sprinter is a light rail service that travels from the Oceanside Transit Center to the Escondido Transit Center primarily along Highway 78. It provides previously unavailable quick access to East San Diego. If you want to visit Escondido’s wineries and breweries, the Sprinter makes it easy to get there. If you’re a hiker or biker, there are several nearby trails. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens is worth the trip on its own.

The San Diego Coaster commuter train runs along the coast between Downtown San Diego and the Oceanside Transit Center. There are places along the way where you are riding right along the ocean with unobstructed views. It takes about an hour from one end to the other, and makes eight stops along the way. This is a good choice from Downtown to Old Town , or to Carlsbad. You could reserve a Flex ride to LEGOLAND from the Carlsbad train stop to the park, or the train to the golf course .

The Pacific Surfliner has traditionally run between San Diego and Los Angeles. Recently, Amtrak has added six new Pacific Surfliner trains that make all the stops the Coaster commuter train makes between San Diego and Oceanside. If you want to go to the San Diego Fair or the Del Mar Race Track, get off at the nearby Solana Beach stop. Want to go to Disneyland or Hollywood? Take it all the way to LA.

Coronado Island Ferry and Water Taxi

The Ferry from Coronado to the Convention Center

Downtown you can catch the Coronado Ferry on the Broadway Pier and ride across San Diego Bay to Coronado Island . Catch it at Ferry Landing on the island coming back. The ferry runs between the two daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and later on weekends. Crosses are every hour on the hour. There are lots of transportation choices once you’re on the island too.

Another easy way to get from place to place along San Diego Bay is by water taxi. They charge a flat rate of $7 per person one-way, no matter where you’re going in the bay. Call ahead to reserve a seat.

Bicycle Rentals and Pedicabs

Riding bikes in San Diego comes in all forms. Coastal neighborhoods along the Pacific Coast Highway (101) are crowded with bike clubs in full gear on the weekends. Mountain bikers head east toward challenging mountain trails. Beach cruisers wobble between pedestrians along the popular Pacific Beach boardwalk. There are a ton of mom and pop bike rental businesses in nearly every neighborhood who have been faithfully serving tourists and locals alike for years, and who welcome your business.

You can catch pedicabs all along Harbor Drive near the bayfront museums, restaurants, and cruise ships, and pretty much anywhere in the Gaslamp Quarter , as well as a few other popular tourist areas. The city has cracked down on price gouging and working illegally. Look for stickers on the pedicabs and ask to see rate sheets.

Once you spend some time looking over all the options, you’ll find that you may not need to rent a car and struggle with traffic in an unfamiliar city, no matter how spread out it is. By putting together some combinations, you can easily get where you need to go. If you’re staying Downtown and want to visit the San Diego Zoo Safari Park , just hop on the Coaster at the Santa Fe Depot and ride to the Oceanside Transit Station, take the Sprinter from Oceanside to the Escondido Transit Center, and take the African Loop bus to the park. You could also take MTS buses from the hotel to the park, but with a lot more stops and some walking. No matter what you choose, get out and enjoy America’s Finest City where it’s always sunny and 72.

Bursts of color saturate Carlsbad flower fields in new mural by Oceanside artist

Michael Summers poses for a photo in front of his mural at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad

Artist Michael Summers is working on a new mural commissioned by The Flower Fields in Carlsbad, featuring elephants, the ranunculus flowers and rolling hills of the 55-acre ranch, and plenty of vibrant colors

Those big, beautiful elephants kept plodding a path through Michael Summers ’ mind, and he finally found the right home for them — his new mural at The Flower Fields in Carlsbad.

The contemporary pop surrealist painter was commissioned to create “something original and unique,” giving him free rein to realize this vision, which he’s working on at the 55-acre working ranch and tourist attraction through March 29.

“I wanted the subject matter to be different than the murals I have painted in the past, while paying homage to the beauty of The Flower Fields and Southern California. After thinking about the space that I had and the environment where the mural would exist, I realized it was perfect for a redesign of a concept that I have had in mind for a few years now,” says Summers, whose “Catnap” mural in Carlsbad Village serves as one of his well-known works. “I have painted a few variations on this theme over the past few years, but nothing ever captured what I was trying to convey. I realize now that part of the issue was the scale. Murals are much larger than the scale on which I usually paint, and I realized that working at this much larger scale would allow me to bring forth the impressive majesty that this concept requires.”

The concept for this 12-foot by 13-foot mural features a family of elephants walking along a path lined with multi-colored ranunculus flowers, with rolling hills in the distance, he says. The background is inspired by the Southern California horizon, there’s a nod to the hills of The Flower Fields, and the two adult elephants “have their trunks raised, emitting a spray of rainbow paint and butterflies, and creating a fountain of color falling onto the ranunculus flowers, coloring them and bringing them to life” with a baby elephant peeking from behind the bull elephant.

Summers, 49, is a full-time artist living in Oceanside, and he took some time to talk about this latest project, the creative inspiration that strikes in his work, the compulsion to create, and balancing the joy and melancholy of life.

Q: Your work is known for being especially vibrant and rich in color, as are The Flower Fields; what was your process for conceptualizing this mural?

A: It was imperative to include the beautiful ranunculus flowers that The Flower Fields are known for, and I wanted to give a nod to its rolling hills in the distance, while meshing the hyper-saturated rainbow color of my art with the colors of The Flower Fields. My paintings are surreal in nature, but I am always aiming to try to take something implausible and make it seem possible or natural. You wouldn’t normally see elephants at The Flower Fields or in Southern California, or spraying butterflies and rainbow rain for that matter, but the fun is creating the painting in such a way that the elephants will look natural and at home in their environment.

Q: Where did you draw inspiration from for this work?

A: Besides drawing direct inspiration from the beauty, colors, and scope of The Flower Fields, a lot of my inspiration for this mural was drawn from my love for Southern California. I wanted to reference the SoCal blue skies with big, puffy clouds and the sense of vastness and distance you get when you’re driving along certain big, empty stretches of the I-5 or I-15 freeways with the ocean or mountains in the distance. As for the elephants themselves, a lot of reference photos I used were photos I took during outings to the San Diego Zoo or Safari Park. Also, when I’m creating, I typically listen to American Roots music by artists such as Tom Waits (also a San Diegan), Bob Dylan, or Johnny Cash, which I think many folks would find surprising, as my paintings often probably look more like the soundtrack should be ABBA or KC & the Sunshine Band (artists I also love).

What I love about Oceanside...

What I love most about Oceanside is that, pretty much any time, I can strap my easel and paints to my bicycle and ride down to the beach and paint. Most of the year, the weather is nice enough so that if the mood strikes, I can do that pretty much any time if I don’t feel like being in my studio. Most of the time, you will find me in my studio alone, that’s how I prefer it; but when I want to be around people, I can pop out and immediately get some great food and just paint and be outdoors in fantastic weather and take in the vibe of an awesome coastal community.

Q: What do you hope people see/experience once your mural at The Flower Fields has been completed?

A: My philosophy on creating art is that inspiration strikes, the artist creates, and after that, the art no longer belongs to the artist. When an artist says what their paintings are about, they are almost doing a disservice to the viewer, because innately everyone who looks at a work of art is going to have their own aesthetic reaction. Everyone will look at it and tell different stories, and that is great. That is what art should do. I think everyone should experience art personally through the lens of their own life and experience. One thing I will say is that when I am painting, I am almost always trying to convey joy. And by that, I don’t mean simple mindless, pleasure-seeking joy, but the deep joys of life, such as the joy of nature, discovery, wonder, or connection. But I really feel that what an artist is trying to accomplish is the least important part of a painting. The important part is what the viewer sees and feels, and it will be different for everyone, which is amazing and wonderful. My art is very much a rebellion against “art that needs to be explained.” The viewer will create their own story and have their own feelings, but ultimately, joy is a common theme.

Q: Your website mentions a tendency for you to “create deceptively whimsical paintings, alive with hidden meaning” and that “within each vibrant scene are playful reminders that our everyday lives are filled with wonder, beauty, and magic, if only we allow our eyes to see it.” What are some ways that you’ve recently been reminded of the wonder, beauty, and magic in your own everyday life?

A: To be honest, this is a difficult question. As much as I talk about wonder, beauty, magic, and joy in my paintings, I also think it is important to note that there is always a little bit of melancholy in every piece. A lot of people don’t seem to notice it, and you don’t always see it, but it is there. Life is life and that means it doesn’t always feel wonderful, beautiful, magical, or joyous, so I always have his little hint of melancholy included because, to me, it is more honest. I want to project joy, but I don’t want to pretend that the world is always joyous, or everyone should always have to feel happy. It’s OK to be sad, it’s OK to recognize and feel melancholy. That dynamic, that balance, is what brings about the true joy and beauty of life.

Q: Are there artists (locally, or outside of the region) whose art you’re a fan of?

A: I am very inspired by Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock art, and also artists of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. My absolute favorite artist is the Italian painter Caravaggio. His work is stunningly filled with pathos and humanity and pain and explores the extremes of human existence. Some of his paintings are so heartbreakingly beautiful they are painful to look at. He has captured something that speaks to me, in an incredibly profound way, about the nature of the human condition, despite his relatively small body of work. Given my style of work, those who are familiar with Caravaggio are often surprised by this, but if you look at my entire body of work, since the start of my career, the influence is there.

Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?

A: This is kind of funny, but the best advice I have received as an artist is, “There is no such thing as an art emergency.” No one dies if a painting doesn’t get there on time. Art is a vehicle for so many things — emotion, imagination, introspection, connection — but no one is going to die if they don’t see it. Also, Steven Pressfield’s book, “The War of Art,” is my “artist’s bible,” if you will. He very concisely and eloquently breaks down the artistic process and inspiration, and the struggle to create versus all the other things in life that are the roadblocks that keep you from creating.

Q: What is one thing people would be surprised to find out about you?

A: That I’m a huge nerd? Actually, most likely no one would be surprised to find that out. How about the fact that my family hasn’t been in the U.S. all that long? My mother’s family came over from Sicily in the 1920s and my father immigrated to the U.S. when he was 12. I am second-generation, U.S. born on my mother’s side and first-generation, U.S. born on my father’s side.

Q: Please describe your ideal San Diego weekend.

A: My ideal weekend is pretty much the same regardless of where I am in the world: 48 hours of rain, me not having to go anywhere, not having any deadlines, in my studio with an easel, a board, a palette, and some good music at my disposal, usually alone, or sometimes with a couple of other artists to create with.
