Gaiole in Chianti

  • Castello di Brolio

The Castello di Brolio, where Chianti Classico was born

The impressive Castello di Brolio dominates the southern Chianti Classico countryside and has done so for over ten centuries. Located on top of an isolated hill a few kilometers from Gaiole in Chianti , the castle has Lombardic origins and has been property of the Ricasoli family since 1141 .

Even though it is closer to Siena, which can be seen in the distance and is just 20 km away, the castle has always been under the influence of Florence and used as one of its strategic outposts. Because of this, the castle was besieged and destroyed many times over the centuries. Every time it has been reconstructed following the style of the current age. It suffered its last attack during World War II, as can be noticed by the holes left by shrapnel all over facade.

The castle we see today is partly the new-Gothic reconstruction ordered by Bettino Ricasoli in the 1800s. The Renaissance gardens with typical geometric shaped bushes and the English woods are stunning and from here you can admire a breathtaking view over the Chianti region. On the horizon, during clear, sunny days, you can clearly see Siena .

Inside the castle you can visit the Chapel of San Jacopo and the crypt with the family tombs and a small museum housing the Ricasoli collection . The collection displays several valuable family weapons, as well as documents and personal belongings of Bettino Ricasoli, together with part of his personal fossil and mineral collection.

Visiting the castle

You can visit the garden and the small museum in Castello di Brolio, the rest of the castle is still home to the current Ricasoli baron and his family.

The basic tour allows entrance to the gardens around the castle. Included in the entrance is a tasting of one of Ricasoli's many wines at the wine shop. The visit around the garden is about an hour long. You can add a guided tour to the museum inside the castle grounds for a small extra fee, but there are specific times of the day when you can do this.

The "classic" tour is a guided tour to the winery and its cellars with wine tasting, while the "vineyard" tour is of course a tour of the cellars, winery and vineyards of the estate. These two require booking, check out the details on the right side of this page for more details.

I personally recommend you just visit the gardens if you are not interested in historical weapons or in learning detailed information on the vineyards. If you like history, doing the basic tour with the museum added on is a great option.

What is fascinating about Brolio is its beauty and magnificence , in addition to is thousand-year relationship with this land and its Chianti wine production. Ricasoli has been producing wine since the Middle Ages and the estate exports their excellent wine all round the world, enjoying success since the early 20th century. We highly recommend you visit this intriguing castle in the Chianti countryside.

Note: Castello di Brolio cannot be reached by public transportation, except during the scholastic calendar year. To visit, a car is much more convenient and necessary during the summer period.

The Brolio ghost

It is now local legend that on nights with a full moon, the ghost of Bettino Ricasoli still walks around the castle. Some say they have seen him out walking the grounds or even out riding on a white horse with a pack of hunting dogs. After his death, on several mornings the Baron’s bed sheets were found rumpled as if someone had slept on his bed. So who knows, if you visit or stay nearby, be on the lookout for Ricasoli’s ghost!

The Iron Baron

Bettino Ricasoli , nicknamed the Iron Baron for his strong resolve and conviction of his ideals, was one of the most important politicians in the 19th century and promoter of Italian union, as well as major of Florence.

His name is strongly related to Brolio and Chianti wine . He was the first to create the recipe for what became the wine for the region, the great red Chianti Classico wine . He determined the mix of three different grape varietals in different quantities; his recipe was used up until 1967 to produce Chianti Classico DOC. Bettino Ricasoli was an essential player and pioneer in developing the Italian wine making sector.

Castello di Brolio

Castello di Brolio is a rural castle located in San Regolo, 14 km from Gaiole in Chianti, about 20 km from Siena, and about 80 km from Florence.

The place has belonged to the Ricasoli family for nearly 800 years. The castle was destroyed more than once during the wars between Siena and Florence.

The Ricasoli were among the first Italian winemakers. Today, the estate is owned by Francesco Ricasoli. The Ricasoli company lands are the most extensive in the Chianti Classico area – the 1,200 hectares of property include 240 hectares of vineyards and 26 hectares of olive groves.

Classic wine tour is at 10-30 am every day.

For other visits, contact the winery. Lunch is included with some wine tour packages.

Castello di Brolio Wine & Tour

Castello di Brolio is located in Tuscany, near Gaiole in Chianti , a town in the province of Siena. This is one of the most beautiful and well-known castles in the whole region. Brolio Castle is famous for several reasons:

  • History : it is a medieval fortress that dates back to the 9th century and has a long history of battles linked to the wars between Florence and Siena.
  • Wine : Castello di Brolio is famous for the production of Chianti Classico wine, one of the most renowned wines in Italy. The castle cellar is open to the public for guided tours and tastings.
  • Architecture : the castle is a magnificent example of medieval and neo-gothic architecture, a real jewel.
  • Landscape : Brolio is located in a privileged position overlooking the Chianti hills, one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany.

In summary, Castello di Brolio is a place that attracts both for its history and for its current wine production, for the beauty of the architecture and for the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

The toponym “ Brolio ” derives from the Celtic and refers to a wooded estate with a castle inhabited by its lord. The castle probably dates back to the 10th century or possibly earlier. In the 12th century, the territory and the castle became the property of the noble Florentine family of the Ricasolis who have maintained possession of them until today.

Brolio Castle was the last outpost of the Florentine Republic on the border with its great rival Siena and therefore it played an important strategic military role for a long time. It is therefore no coincidence that the castle has been the object of numerous attacks over the centuries, such as in 1252 and 1434 by the Sienese and in 1452 by the Aragonese. In 1478, a new attack by Siena, which this time made use of powerful bombards, caused considerable damage to the fortress walls.

Once the war between Florence and Siena was over, with the definitive defeat of the latter, the castle was converted into a valuable noble residence. In this period, the wine production that had already existed for several centuries was expanded.

An important name in the history of Brolio is that of Bettino Ricasoli, an important politician who also covered the role of Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Italy during his career. Bettino Ricasoli had the castle restructured, giving it its current neo-Gothic form and in the meantime devoted himself at length to the art of viticulture. His goal was to make the best possible wine and, after various experiments, he managed to define which were the best grapes to use for Chianti Classico wine, thus laying the foundations for the specification that is still in force today.

Things to do in Gaiole in Chinati: visit the Castle of Brolio

Castle architecture

The architecture of the castle is characterized by a fortified structure which has the shape of a noble palace. The main tower overlooks an internal courtyard, which was used as a parade ground during the Middle Ages. The castle also has a private chapel, which was founded in 1348 but which was remodeled during the 19th century. Most of the castle’s structures have been preserved and restored, including the walls, towers and entrance gates.

Over the centuries the castle has been enlarged and transformed to adapt to the needs of the various owners and the necessities of war. Most of the renovations date back to 1835 when Bettino Ricasoli commissioned the architect Pietro Marchetti to redo the look of the castle to give it a neo-Gothic appearance. The original structures and the newer ones are easily distinguishable thanks to the different materials used: pietra serena in the case of the medieval works, brick in the more recent ones.

Wine tour at Castello di Brolio

Castello di Brolio offers wine tours to introduce visitors to the history and production of Chianti Classico wine. The tours include a visit to the medieval castle and the cellar, where it is possible to see how the wines are made and to taste the various types of Chianti Classico produced by the Ricasoli cellar. Furthermore, visitors can take a stroll through the castle’s vineyards and learn how grapes are grown and how they affect the taste of the wine. Tours can be booked in advance and are led by expert guides who can provide detailed information on the history, production and tasting of Chianti Classico wine.

Visiting hours and price of Castello di Brolio

The visiting hours of the Brolio Castle may vary according to the season and weather conditions. I recommend that you visit the castle’s official website or contact the establishment directly to obtain information on the dates and times of visits. In general, the castle and cellar tours take place outside the winter period. As regards the price of the visit, it should be considered that there are different types of tours with prices ranging from 6.50 euros for a visit to the castle gardens up to 150 euros for the “gran cru tour” which includes a private visit with tasting and lunch.

How to get to the Castello di Brolio

By car the castle is easily reachable by car from the main cities of Tuscany, such as Florence and Siena, via the Chianti state road 222. Those coming from the north and using the A1 motorway must take the Valdarno exit and then continue on the SP408 in the direction of Gaiole; there you will find signs for the castle. Those coming from the south instead must choose the Valdichiana exit and continue on the SS715 in the direction of Castelnuovo Berardenga and then continue towards the castle.

Less simple is to reach the castle by public transport. The nearest railway station is in Siena, from where it is possible to take a bus or a taxi to reach the castle.

Castello di Brolio

The ancestral estate of the aristocratic Ricasoli family dates from the 11th century and is the oldest winery in Italy. Currently home to the 32nd baron, it opens its formal garden, panoramic terrace and small but fascinating museum to day trippers, who often adjourn to the excellent on-site osteria for lunch after enjoying a morning tour and tasting.

Occupying three rooms in the castle's tower, Brolio's museum is dedicated to documenting the life of the extravagantly mustachioed Baron Bettino Ricasoli (1809–80), the second prime minster of the Republic of Italy, a man of many identities (scientist, farmer, winemaker, statesman and businessman) and a leading figure in the Risorgimento. One of his great claims to fame is inventing the formula for Chianti Classico that is enshrined in current DOC regulations. Entry is by guided tour only, and these must be booked in advance.

The castello 's chapel dates from the early 14th century; beneath it is a crypt where generations of Ricasolis are interred. The estate produces wine and olive oil, and the huge terrace commands a spectacular view of the vineyards and olive groves.

The Classic Tour (€30, two hours) takes in the wine-making facilities and features a tasting; it runs at least three times weekly. The Vineyard Tour (€45, two hours, 3pm Thursday) sees you exploring three of the estate's different terroirs and sampling vintages beside the vines. It is essential to book online in advance.

A bosco inglese (English garden) surrounds the estate; in it (near the car park) you'll find the estate's Osteria del Castello . Just outside the estate's entrance gates, on the SP484, is a modern cantina , or cellar, where you can taste the estate's well-regarded Chianti Classico.

Barone Ricasoli Winery & Brolio Castle in Tuscany's Chianti Region

Touring Brolio Castle Museum and Barone Ricasoli Winery

castello di brolio wine & tour

Barone Ricasoli S.p.A. Agricola

Even if you've done wine tours all over Italy or the world, a visit to Brolio Castle and Barone Ricasoli Winery should be on your bucket list. At Barone Ricasoli you can taste wine, tour the castle museum and gardens, and eat at a fine osteria. The formula for Chianti Classico wine was invented here, so Barone Ricasoli is a great place to start your tour of Chianti wineries.

Barone Ricasoli Winery and Wine Tasting

Barone Ricasoli Winery is the oldest winery in Italy and is believed to be the second oldest continuously running winery in the world. In 1872 Baron Bettino Ricasoli, known as the "Iron Baron", wrote the formula for Chianti Classico wine, which he developed after more than 30 years of research. Chianti Classico wine is made primarily from Sangiovese grapes with the addition of other grapes.

Today, Barone Ricasoli Castello di Brolio is the largest winery in the Chianti Classico area , with 240 acres of vineyards and modern state-of-the-art wine-making facilities. It produces three million bottles of wine per year and its wines are exported all over the world. In addition to several Chianti Classico wines, the winery produces a very good white wine, a Rose', Vin Santo dessert wine, grappa, and olive oil.

Wine tasting is offered in the wine shop welcome center. The tasting room is currently open every day of the week from April through October (except some holidays), reservations not necessary, and visitors can taste three wines for five euro (refunded if you buy a bottle of wine). Winery tours are available by advance booking.

Brolio Castle Museum and Gardens

Brolio Castle, which has been in the Ricasoli family since the 11th century, is still used as a private residence but a few of the 140 rooms of the castle may be open to the public in the future. Many historical items from the castle are on display in the small museum housed in a castle tower. Guides take visitors through the four rooms of the museums, relating interesting information about the castle and family history, the "Iron Baron", and the winery. It's not necessary to book a tour in advance, they are given every half hour, usually in English. Tickets are currently eight euro for the museum tour and garden visit.

Highlights of the museum are a display of 14th - 18th-century weapons, a room with 19th-century scientific instruments and the research of the "Iron Baron", and a bedroom with furnishings made exclusively for the King of Italy when he visited in 1863.

The beautifully landscaped gardens of the castle can be visited without a guide. Current cost is five euro or eight euro for the combination museum and garden ticket. The chapel by the castle and the English woods leading up to the castle, with plants from all over the world, can be visited for free. Be sure to walk around the castle to see the fantastic views of vineyards, woods, and the valley below.

A consistent top wine from Tuscany.

Best after 2004. 8,800 cases made.

Barone Ricasoli Chianti Classico Casalferro

The ORIGINAL RECIPE of CHIANTI WINE, written by Rt. Hon. ”

Full description

If you want to spend a day whilst relishing the true essence of Tuscany with all your senses , this Tour of the Chianti castles with a traditional lunch and tastings of Chianti and Super Tuscan wine , will let you experience first-hand the heart of this wonderful land .

Our wine tasting Chianti tour, will delight your eyes with open views of the rolling hills of this area , fantastic in every season. The cypresses, the olive trees and the rows of vines will be a constant presence framed, in every season, by a kaleidoscope of colors and atmospheres: from poppy fields in spring and sunflowers in summer, the vivid and warm colours of autumn and the poetic harvesting time, to the peace of the crisp winter days. But Chianti is not just nature , you will glance around and spot quaint medieval villages, ancient abbeys, churches and many of the most beautiful castles in Tuscany . You will then discover that the magical synergy between this land and human presence has produced one of the most popular typical Tuscan wines. And thanks to us, it is Chianti you will taste, the undisputed symbol of Tuscany! You will enjoy two Chianti wines tasting s , suitably accompanied by succulent typical Tuscan food , all in the pleasant settings of astonishing locations .

Our wine tour in the Chianti region, available only to small groups in the comfort of a minibus that will be at your disposal for the entire duration, will start from an not-to-be-missed stop: the Brolio Castle . It is an imposing neo-gothic building located on a hill from which you can enjoy a fantastic view, perfect for taking pictures. We will leave you free to enter the walls of what can be called 'the birthplace of Chianti' . In fact, it is here that Barone Ricasoli (1809-1880) perfected the Chianti recipe which, bar some slight variations, is the one making up the current specification. Baron Bettino Ricasoli was a fascinating and eclectic figure: just think that he was mayor of Florence, President of the Council of the Kingdom of Italy and founder of the daily "La Nazione"! Surely his most valued accomplishment was his success in being able to balance out Sangiovese and other grapes, the decisive element responsible for the unique and unmistakable taste and scent of Chianti . Just a small recommendation: be careful when you wander round Castello Brolio! It appears that the ancient building is haunted by the ghost of the ingenious baron, so better keep your eyes open then!

After visiting this charming castello in Chianti, your day will continue following the guiding thread of Tuscany’s iconic wine . We will therefore take you to a winery because, as you know, wineries lie at the heart of Chianti and are a must if you want to learn the fascinating secrets for the production of the wonderful nectar . At this point, after the lessons on the geography and history of Chianti, you will have to face the practical test: a delicious Classic Gallo Chianti wine tasting while listening to entertaining and interesting stories and funny anecdotes about one of the best Tuscan typical products.

Our wine tour in the Chianti region continues with another visit that, depending on availability, you will pay to another charming Chianti castle in Tuscany or the charming vaulted rooms of a winery . Here you will be served a tasty lunch of Tuscan typical food washed down with excellent local wines . We now bet that, just thinking about the excellent Tuscan cold cuts, the tasty cheeses or the delicious olive oil will have already made your mouth water. Are you already consulting your agenda to find the best time to enjoy this fantastic wine tasting experience? How could we blame you? Wait, though ... we have some other nice surprises to tease you a little more.

After the Chianti wine taste and the lunch based on Tuscan typical products, a nice walk to burn the calories off is just what you need. And that’s what you will get up to, but not in any place! You will in fact visit a characteristic medieval walled village and wander through its streets to discover an ancient and fascinating time that here seems to have really stopped.

And if by chance, at this point, you still fancy a little wine, we will certainly not stop you! At the end of the day, wine tasting in Tuscany is surely the best way to discover the heart of this land . And that’s why we will take you on another Chianti winery visit. Here you will literally hang from the lips of the owner himself, listening to him telling you in a passionate and fascinating way all the tales, anecdotes and interesting facts that for centuries have linked his family to the production of wine . Considering in fact that Chianti wineries visits are the best way to relish all the essence of one of the finest Tuscan produce, we will once again give you the opportunity to sip some excellent wine. You will also taste the so-called Super Tuscan wines . These are wines that, by choice of the producer, do not stick to the DOCG Chianti wine specifications using instead different grapes to Sangiovese such as Bordeaux, cabernet sauvignon and merlot. You will have this final tasting in the fantastic setting of the garden of the farmstead, immersed in the wonderful atmosphere of the surrounding nature enjoying some cheerful and relaxing company. There couldn’t be a better way to end our wine tasting Chianti tour: a fantastic day spent visiting Chianti castles and discovering Chianti, an enchanting area between Florence and Siena, known as the beating heart of Tuscany’s history and tradition and its renowned wine production .

We are sure that after this wine tasting experience the gentle slopes of the hills, the olive tree branches and the rows of vines, the ancient castles, the quaint villages and the fascinating cellars will forever hold a special place in your heart...

Brolio Castle, among Tuscan vineyards and olive groves. How to visit it, tickets and timetables

Castello di Brolio, Toscana

Photo Simone Antonazzo

Brolio Castle is a medieval castle located in Gaiole in Chianti , in the region of Tuscany , Italy. It is placed a few kilometers from the city of Siena . It is located on a hill amidst vineyards and olive groves , and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside .

The castle was built way back in the 11th century and then expanded and restored over the centuries. It has a large internal courtyard , a watchtower and an ancient cellar where it is possible to taste the wines from the castle’s cellars . The castle is still inhabited by the Ricasoli family, who have owned it for over a thousand years, and who still produce wines under the name of Castello di Brolio .

How to visit Brolio Castle?

Brolio Castle is open to the public for guided tours and wine tastings . Guided tours can be booked in advance or directly at the castle cellar. Generally the visits include a visit to the cellar, the wine cellar, the barrel cellar and the tasting of some of the castle’s wines. There are also events and happenings throughout the year , such as exhibitions , concerts and cultural events .

Why visit it?

The main reason for visiting Brolio Castle is to admire the beauty of the medieval structure and to discover the history and winemaking tradition of Tuscany . Furthermore, tasting the castle’s wines can be a pleasant experience for wine enthusiasts.

When to visit it

The best time to visit Brolio Castle depends on your personal preferences and the activities you wish to do during your visit. However, in general, I recommend that you visit the castle in spring or summer when the weather is warmer and the days are long and bright. At this time, the vineyards and olive trees around the castle are in bloom and the views over the countryside are particularly spectacular.

What to see nearby?

As for the activities to do in the vicinity of the castle, there are several options. We advise you to visit the city of Siena , located a few kilometers away, famous for its medieval architecture, its piazza del campo and its palio.

You can also take a trip to the Tuscan countryside, explore the surrounding hills and visit medieval villages such as Radda in Chianti , Gaiole in Chianti and Castellina in Chianti .

Also, not far from Castello di Brolio, there are other wine cellars in the Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino area where you can taste the famous Tuscan wines such as Chianti , Brunello and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano .

If you love nature, you can go hiking in the surroundings. There are many paths and natural parks such as the Maremma Park and the Casentinesi Forest Park which offer natural beauty and outdoor activities such as trekking , horse riding and bird watching .

For more information you can visit the official website of the Castle.

The sprawling, mind-boggling metropolis of Russian Moscow has long been one of the theatrical stages on which the great dramas of Europe and Asia have been played out in grand style. Burned by Napoleon in 1812, immortalised by Tolstoy, utilised by the Bolsheviks and championed as a bastion of heroic defiance by the post-war communists, it’s almost hard to believe just how defining the historical events that found their home on Moscow’s streets have been. Moscow tour guides will easily be able to mark the major must-see landmarks on the map, from the onion-domed orthodox Saint Basil's Cathedral, to the political powerhouse of Red Square just next door, while others will be quick to recommend a ride on Moscow’s famous subterranean metro system, or a visit to the UNESCO-attested Novodevichy Convent on the city’s southern side. But Moscow is a city also in the throes of a cultural wrangling between the old and the new. Creative energies abound here: Boho bars and pumping super clubs now occupy the iconic mega structures of the old USSR; high-fashion outlets, trendy shopping malls and luxurious residential districts stand as testimony to a city that’s now the undisputed playground of the world’s super-rich, while sprawling modern art museums dominate the cultural offering of the downtown districts north of the Moskva River.

Tell us your destination, date, and group size.

Our team of travel experts and guides will design a tailored itinerary just for you., enjoy your trip with peace of mind knowing everything is taken care of..

Palaces for ordinary people – that was what Stalin promised to the people when the construction of the Moscow Metro began between the World Wars. The communist dictator hadn’t promised too much. No other underground system in the world can boast such spectacular architecture – chandeliers, decorations, stucco, paintings on the walls – each station is individually designed. No wonder that Moscow residents love their metro. I will guide you through the bustle of one of the busiest subways in the world and show you the most beautiful stations Moscow city has.

Tour of Communist Moscow – every day

After the Communist October Revolution in 1918, Moscow became the capital of the Soviet Empire and was the center of socialist orbit for more than 70 years. This left its mark on Moscow, even if the USSR disintegrated more than a quarter of a century ago. The city streets are full of remnants of the communist regime and the Cold War. This is a walking tour where I will show you the most exciting places in Soviet Moscow: from the notorious KGB headquarters, also known as Lubyanka to the Karl Marx Monument to small hidden remains from the time of hammer and sickle. You will also learn about Stalin’s Great Terror political campaign and the system of the GULAG and how the USSR, the communist Russian republic, became modern Russia.

This place not only has trendy cafes and green squares, but here you can see the most beautiful spray works (according to Albrecht Dürer), hangout-places of the youth and hipsters, as well as learn what Moscow looked like in the 19th century. Here you will also learn exciting and even bloody stories about famous gangsters, eccentric business people and legends like the wandering preacher Rasputin, who is known in Russia either as the “holy devil” or the mad monk. This tour is of 2 hours duration and you will experience the following on the tour:

  • St. John’s Hill, a quiet oasis right in the center, where time has stopped as it did in pre-Communist times

Customer

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
