Screen Rant

10 best mounts for travel in ark: survival ascended.

The huge world of Ark: Survival Ascended can be hard to travel on your own without the best mounts providing different ways to get around land or sea.

The many prehistoric creatures you can tame in ARK: Survival Ascended can become mounts suited for travel across the massive open-world map. This unique sandbox is full of creatures that have different traits designed for exploration over specific environments. Ranging from huge beasts roaming the seas to agile mounts dashing through dense jungles, you have many options to choose from.

Many dinosaurs and other creatures you encounter can not be tamed as mounts until you collect their preferred food . Carnivores and herbivores all have meals they want over others, so first, take the time to learn about the creatures in ARK: Survival Ascended . Study the beasts you wish to turn into a mount and observe their behavior, so you can predict what ingredients you'll need.

Taming any creature requires Narcoberries , which can craft Tranq Arrows to knock out an animal and turn it into a mount.

10 Frog (Also Known as Beelzebufo)

Jump and swim.

Also known as the Beelzebufo , the Frog might be one of the first mounts you try to tame in ARK: Survival Ascended . This small amphibian may not have a lot of health, but it makes up for this with an incredible jump that goes over a great distance. Holding down the jump button lets you charge the Frog's leap before launching both you and the creature forward quickly.

10 Hidden Features In Ark: Survival Ascended That Will Improve Your Experience

Frogs also have the ability to swim , which makes them an excellent choice to travel across lakes and oceans. The only problem with the Beelzebufo is its low Weight stat, which prevents it from carrying a lot of items at a time. The Frog also jumps horizontally and does not get much height when trying to escape danger.

9 Gallimimus (A Solid Land Mount)

Sacrifice defense for speed.

The fastest land mount in ARK: Survival Ascended is the Gallimimus , which can travel across the ground at breakneck speeds. This dinosaur has a decent enough Weight to transport a lot of your gear during the early and mid-game parts of your adventure. However, this beast has a couple of clear weaknesses that make it trickier to use compared to other mounts.

The Gallimimus has a terrible amount of health, to the point where only a couple of hits from hostile creatures could take it down. The astounding speed of this beast will be enough to get away from most foes, but a lucky attack against it could spell your doom. Try to be careful as you use this mount, especially if you encounter any powerful Alpha Creatures in ARK: Survival Ascended .

8 Pteranodon (An Impressive Flying Mount)

Take to the skies.

The Pteranodon is one of the first flying mounts you can use in ARK: Survival Ascended . While flying mounts typically have low Weight limits for items, the ability to soar through the sky makes traveling across the world much easier. According to a video made by YouTube creator Sethum , Pteranodons can be harder to tame than other dinosaurs unless you have the right tools.

This reptile has a hidden ability that allows it to barrel roll in the air, which can be used to fly through narrow spaces or dodge enemy attacks. Doing this boosts the Pteranodon's speed by 15% and also increases the power of its strikes. Take advantage of this trait to win aerial battles against other hostile creatures in ARK: Survival Ascended or flee from dangerous situations as soon as possible.

7 Basilosaurus (A Creature With a Unique Skill)

Immunity to electricity.

There are many creatures native to the seas of ARK: Survival Ascended , but one of the most distinct is the Basilosaurus . This huge eel-like creature can be hard to tame and may not seem special enough to be worth the effort at first. The Basilosaurus' unique ability to resist electricity makes this creature a desirable travel mount for anyone looking to brave the many dangers of the ocean.

Electric eels and jellyfish are two of the most annoying threats in ocean biomes across ARK: Survival Ascended 's world. The large health and Weight of the Basilosaurus allow you to carry a great number of items across the sea without worrying about these interruptions.

Everything To Expect From Ark: Survival Ascended's New Map

6 procoptodon (a good pick for land travel), leap across the world.

Similar to the Frog, the Procoptodon is a useful travel mount for journeys on land due to its strong jump. This creature has a vertical leap that can be charged to make its jump seem like it is a flying mount. This dinosaur makes up for the Frog's weaknesses, with better defenses and Weight limits to make it more versatile and reliable as a mount.

The Procoptodon is fairly slow compared to other mounts when walking, so the huge leap is how you will be traveling most of the time with this creature.

One thing you have to be careful of while riding the Procoptodon is the fall damage it can take if you accidentally jump over a cliff. The huge leap could cause you to miscalculate the distance you travel and wind up hurtling to certain death. A trick to avoid this damage is to dismount at the last second so that the Procoptodon resets the height of its fall right before hitting the ground.

5 Manta (A Fast Ocean Option)

Cut through the sea like a knife.

Small creatures called Mantas are found in the oceans of ARK: Survival Ascended and are the fastest sea-faring mounts you can tame. While their Weight and health are decent, the speed at which these rays travel will get you from point A to point B in an instant. Since Mantas are passive animals, you should be able to trap one easily as you swim through different bodies of water.

Chests found at sea may contain important items you need to get to the mainland fast. Mantas are perfect for quick sea adventures where you are constantly going back and forth from your base in ARK: Survival Ascended . The high Stamina of this animal gives it the ability to travel great distances without slowing down until you arrive at your destination.

4 Iguanodon (Mount With a Useful Travel Ability)

Run without stopping.

The best land mount in ARK: Survival Ascended is the Iguanodon due to the creature's distinct relationship with the Stamina stat. According to YouTube creator DrDigital , Iguanodons have the ability to go on all fours to run faster and not consume Stamina while moving. This allows you to travel indefinitely and sprint through environments without having to stop for your mount to recover.

This alternate mode may be slower than some mounts, but the consistent pace can outdo many other creatures you ride in ARK: Survival Ascended . The larger size of an Iguanodon gives the animal a better Weight score to carry more items. Long trips for farming important resources are best made with this reliable mount at your side.

3 Argentavis (A Helpful Flying Mount)

Carry many materials in the air.

One of the coolest flying dinosaurs in ARK: Survival Ascended is the Argentavis , an enormous bird whose size creates many advantages. This creature has the highest Weight of any flying mount and has a large amount of health and Stamina, too. With the talons natural to a giant eagle, this beast is perfectly capable of defending you and your items from dangers in the ground or air.

While slightly slower than the Pteranodon, certain materials actually become lighter when you place them on the Argentavis. For example, if you have 20 Stones that come out to 10 Weight total, the value changes to 5 Weight when you place them on this mount. This creature can act as an aerial semi-truck as it moves a ton of items at once between different locations and your base.

2 Plesiosaur (A Mount Worth Taming)

Build on a dinosaur's back.

The ancient Plesiosaur is the best mount of the ocean in ARK: Survival Ascended because you can build structures on its back . Decent speed pairs with a large health pool to give this Loch Ness monster many strong traits. Plesiosaurs are one of the biggest mounts in the game and can support nearly any base design if you want a mobile fortress floating on the high seas.

As seen in a video by YouTube creator Spartacus , Plesiosaurs are hard to tame but are one of the best ocean dinosaurs to befriend. Boasting both the ability to fight off various enemies and carry an immense amount of cargo, this creature can practically do it all. The only thing a Plesiosaur can't do is fly, but you could recruit other mounts to fly to and from the base built on this dinosaur's back.

1 Rhyniognatha (Known for Its Versatility)

Bug is best.

The best mount in ARK: Survival Ascended is Rhyniognatha , a giant insect-like creature who travels by air, sea, and land in equal measure. Not only does this beast have excellent stats across the board, but it also has the ability to travel through any terrain. Excellent attacks from the Rhyniognatha allow you to defend yourself easily from any threats while riding this bug through the sky or along ocean waters.

This insect moves surprisingly quickly for its size and can hover in place in the air with the press of a button. This gives you a chance to scout locations and possible threats without having to think about maneuvering your mount. The only thing the Rhyniognatha can't do is support an entire base like the Plesiosaur, but its jack-of-all-trades approach to travel still makes it arguably the best mount in ARK: Survival Ascended .

Ark: Survival Ascended

Best Dinosaurs In ARK: Survival Ascended

From gigantic powerhouses to useful critters, ARK: Survival Ascended’s dinosaurs each have their own unique strengths.

Taming and riding dinosaurs are arguably the best parts of ARK: Survival Ascended , making it stand out among other survival sandbox competitors. Each of ARK: Survival Ascended ’s dinosaurs has its own uses, with varying strengths and weaknesses across the board. While one dino might excel at harvesting materials, such as berries, another may be a fantastic travel mount with superior speed.

ARK: Survival Ascended – 7 Notable Improvements

In some cases, personal taste surely has an impact on which dinosaurs the player decides to tame for different uses. Still, though there are plenty of challenge videos showcasing just how far players can get with one single dinosaur, in most scenarios, players will want to tame the best dinosaurs in each category to reduce the notorious grind necessary to complete the Ark. This article is written from a PvE standpoint, and does not cover the Giganotosaurus, Titanosaur, Quetzal, Carcharodontosaurus or Mosasaurus.

11 Triceratops, The Classic Three-Horned Dino

Makes arduous berry gathering a thing of the past.

  • 5/5 gathering rates on berries and thatch.
  • Reduces incoming damage from the front by 50%.
  • Has a charge ability which is useful for getting around.

Easily one of the most recognizable, well-loved, and classic dinosaurs, the Triceratops is a fantastic dino in both the early and mid stages of ARK : Survival Ascended . To tame creatures, players require various materials , including narcoberries, which are gathered from bushes. Gathering berries by hand is a long, arduous process, especially when narcoberries seem to have a much lower harvest rate than some other berries.

The Triceratops has a fantastic berry gathering rate, gathering a much higher number of berries in one click. On top of this, their weight allows them to gather hundreds of berries without being over-encumbered. As well as being an efficient berry-gatherer, a high-level Triceratops can be a decent way of farming Alpha Raptors for levels and loot in the beginning, thanks to their increased defense from the front.

10 Castoroides, The Giant Beaver

An all-rounded, wood chopping machine.

  • 5/5 gathering rate on wood.
  • Reduces the total weight of wood, stone, fiber, and thatch in its inventory by 50%.
  • The Castoroides Saddle can be used as a Smithy.
  • Base swimming speed stat of 700.

The Castoroides, a giant beaver, is an extremely versatile mount with many uses, with its most effective job being a wood-gatherer. However, due to its ability to half the weight of any wood, stone, fiber, and thatch in its inventory, the Castoroides can also act as a good pack-mule for material runs. Additionally, the Castoroides is one of few dinosaurs with a unique saddle that allows the player to craft and repair gear on the go, acting as a mobile smithy.

As if all of this wasn’t enough, the giant beaver has a good swimming speed, out-matching most wild dinos. This swim speed makes the Castoroides a decent travel mount, especially in rivers, allowing the player to get around quickly and safely.

9 Basilosaurus, The Gentle Whale

Makes water caves a piece of cake.

  • Immune to dismounts.
  • Immune to stuns.
  • Produces oil.
  • Provides insulation.

The Basilosaurus is a gentle giant of the sea, often seen surrounded by mantas. Tamed through passive methods, the player will need to clear out the Basilo's entourage of dinos before trying to tame it.

ARK: Survival Ascended is Being Review Bombed

After taming a Basilo, the player will no longer need to fear the Electrophorus and Cnidaria haunting the ocean, making the whale a must-have tame for clearing the underwater caves. As well as being immune to stuns and dismounts, the Basilosaurus provides the player with insulation, keeping the survivor warm in cold seas.

8 Thylacoleo, The Tree Cat

Brilliant for shredding high-hp opponents.

  • Base melee stat of 40.
  • Base health stat of 700.
  • Its bite applies a bleed which deals 5% of the opponent’s max health over 5 seconds.
  • Able to scale walls and climb vertical surfaces.
  • Takes reduced fall damage.

The Thylacoleo is one of the best land mounts in ARK: Survival Ascended . The tree cat’s great damage, solid health pool, and brilliant movement speed are thoroughly outmatched by most wild dinos, especially as the Thyla can scale mountains, cliff-edges, and traverse the map with ease.

Furthermore, the Thyla’s 5% max health bleed enables the player to face down tough opponents such as the Alpha Carno, and at higher levels, even Alpha Rex. The bleed is so potent that well-bred Thylas can even be used in groups to take down huge dinosaurs like the Titanosaur.

7 Megatherium, The Giant Sloth

An insect's worst nightmare.

  • 250% damage increase after killing insects.
  • Reduces incoming damage by 75% after killing insects.

The Megatherium is known as the best dino for taking out the Broodmother, a horrifying spider boss in ARK: Survival Ascended , due to its rage mode, which is triggered after killing an insect. Whilst enraged, the Megatherium deals increased damage and reduces incoming damage.

Even a pack of non-bred, high-level Megatherium with base saddles should be able to take out the Beta-level Broodmother with ease, allowing players to farm for Tek recipes and fragments. The Megatherium’s buff against insects also makes it the perfect candidate for clearing out the swamp cave, which is overrun by deadly, high-level insects.

6 Doedicurus, The Stone Gatherer

Smashes rocks with ease.

  • 5/5 gathering rate for stone.
  • Reduces the total weight of carried stone by 75%.
  • Has a useful rolling ability to get around.

The Doedicurus has one job and one job only: gather stone and be incredibly good at it. It’s safe to say it smashes this task, making the slow process of gathering stone a thing of the past once the player successfully tames a Doedic.

ARK: Survival Ascended Coming to Xbox Before PS5

As well as being an amazing stone-gatherer, the Doedic has the additional benefit of reducing the weight of carried stone by 75%, allowing the player to embark on huge stone-gathering missions with ease. While the Doedic is slow, it does have a rolling ability that drains stamina but allows it to move around a little quicker. Alternatively, the player can pick up their Doedic with an Argentavis for even faster gathering.

5 Ankylosaurus, The Metal Gatherer

A must-have dino for metal runs.

  • 5/5 gathering rates on metal, flint, and crystal.
  • 4/5 gathering rates on oil, berries, and obsidian.
  • Reduces the total weight of carried metal by 85%.

The metal-collecting variant of the Doedicurus, the Ankylosaurus is an extremely effective metal gatherer, gathering more metal from a single node than other methods, as well as reducing the total weight of carried metal by 85%.

On top of being an effective metal-gathering dino, the Anky is quite good at obtaining flint, obsidian, oil, and crystal, too, thanks to its pick-like tail. The best method of gathering metal with the Anky is to pick it up with an Argentavis and allow it to passively harvest from metal nodes, as both dinos reduce the total weight of carried metal.

4 Therizinosaurus, The Big Clawed Chicken

The champion of gathering materials.

  • 5/5 gathering rates on wood, hide, chitin, keratin, and fiber.
  • 4/5 gathering rates on berries and organic polymer.
  • Base melee stat of 52.
  • Base health stat of 870.
  • Great option for defeating the Dragon boss.

The Therizinosaurus is a goofy, long-nailed, bird-like terror with insane gathering rates and high damage. As one of the few aggressive herbivores on the Ark, the Theri is not to be approached unless the player has a strong mount and even stronger courage.

Excelling at multiple types of gathering, including chitin/ keratin and organic polymer, the Theri is an amazing mid to late-game mount. In addition to its incredibly high gather rates, the Therizinosaurus is one of the best dino options for clearing the Dragon, an ARK: Survival Ascended boss, as it is unaffected by the Dragons' special passive which deals greater damage to carnivores.

3 Argentavis, The Jack Of All Trades Flier

Excellent for traversing the island.

  • Fantastic travel mount.
  • Able to pick up small to medium dinosaurs.
  • Lowers the weight of carried metal by 50%.
  • Has a unique saddle type that allows the player to repair gear.

The Argentavis is arguably the best creature on The Island in ARK: Survival Ascended due to its flexibility as a mount. Able to pick up and carry most medium creatures, including the Thylacoleo, the Argie makes the taming of these dinos incredibly easy.

ARK: Survival Ascended – 8 Tips For Complete Newcomers

On top of being an effective dino-collector, the Argentavis can carry both the Doedicurus and Ankylosaurus, fly them over rocks, and let the two dinosaurs passively gather the materials from metal nodes and rocks. Furthermore, the unique saddle type of the Argentavis allows the player to repair gear on the go.

2 Yutyrannus, The Fluffy Rex

Provides incredible buffs for allies.

  • Base metal stat of 55.
  • Base health stat of 1100.
  • Courage Roar enhances the damage dealt by allied dinosaurs by 25% and reduces incoming damage by 20%.
  • Fear Roar terrifies enemy creatures, making them take 50% more damage while reducing their damage output by 30%.

There’s nothing worse than traversing the already dangerous snowy landscape and hearing the roar of a Yutyrannus nearby. Spawning primarily in the snow biome, the fluffy cousin of the Rex is a fantastic battle dinosaur that buffs its allies while applying huge debuffs to its enemies.

With an equal base health stat to the Rex and a small damage difference, the fluffy dinosaur can be used as a strong, supportive dino during boss fights, buffing the chosen army of dinosaurs with massive boosts to their damage output, while reducing incoming damage by a large margin.

1 Tyrannosaurus Rex, The Famous Prehistoric Terror

The best dinosaur for bosses.

  • Base melee stat of 62.

The famous Rex reigns supreme in ARK: Survival Ascended as the best boss-fighting dinosaur. With a huge base-health stat and incredible damage, a pack of tamed Rex has little-to-no difficulty tearing through ARK: Survival Ascended ’s higher-level bosses.

While the Rex lacks a unique ability, functioning purely as a left-click damage bot, simply sitting atop an apex predator while it demolishes its opponents in a few bites is core to the ARK: Survival Ascended experience . Through breeding, the player can stack melee mutations, creating the ultimate Rex; a devastating force to trample the Ark with.

How Does Fast Travel Work In ARK Survival Ascended?

Exploring the expansive world of ARK Survival Ascended is exhilarating for many players. Yet, there are occasions when reaching your destination swiftly becomes a priority, whether due to impatience or gameplay considerations such as safeguarding rare items.

While fast travel is a common feature in various games, does ARK Survival Ascended offer such an option, and if so, how does it function? This question will be addressed below as we examine the presence of fast travel in ARK Survival Ascended and explore how this mechanic operates in the game.

ARK Survival Ascended Fast Travel: How It Works

As of the current writing, the fast travel system in ARK Survival Ascended is only partially functional. Essentially, players can fast travel between beds they own, but there's a significant drawback – all items are dropped during the fast travel process. Consequently, when spawning at the destination, players find themselves without access to their items and weapons, posing a considerable challenge for many players.

How To Fast Travel Currently only partial

To address this limitation, some players turn to mods that enable full teleportation or fast travel within the game. Among these, the Teleporters mod by seaofblood_xhui stands out, boasting tens of thousands of downloads and establishing itself as the most trusted mod for complete teleportation of both items and dinos in ARK Survival Ascended. While not a vanilla feature, it proves effective for those willing to experiment.

Alternatively, players can opt for flying mounts as an alternative to teleportation or fast travel. The game offers a variety of flying mounts with different speeds, allowing players to choose the dino that best suits their needs. Flying also introduces a range of mechanics to enhance the journey, such as gathering resources, picking up dinos, and discovering previously missed locations.

How To Fast Travel alternatives

Although this alternative doesn't match the convenience and speed of a dedicated fast travel feature, it serves as a decent substitute for now. Developers have hinted at ongoing content updates for the game, leaving the possibility open for a future introduction of a more robust fast travel system. As of now, fast travel remains a partial feature in ARK Survival Ascended. Any changes or updates to this feature will be promptly covered here, so consider bookmarking this article for future reference.

Ark: Survival Evolved - Best Dinosaurs To Tame

There are dozens and dozens of dinosaurs to tame in Ark, but only a certain few claim the top spots.

By Joey Carr on July 11, 2022 at 3:48PM PDT

There are few games deadlier, and more exciting, than Ark: Survival Evolved . A survival game that centers around dinosaurs is an exciting premise on its own but then once you add in the ability to tame said dinosaurs, the ante is upped exponentially. In order to navigate the harsh terrain and landscapes of Ark, players must make use of the dinosaurs around them. Whether this is from actually taming them or killing them for materials, players will interact with dozens of dinos throughout their time in Ark. As veterans of the survival game will know, every creature in Ark: Survival Evolved has a different purpose, taming method, and use for the player. Because of these vast differences, players might need to prioritize which dinosaurs they choose to tame.

If you're looking for the absolute best dinosaurs to tame in Ark: Survival Evolved, then you've come to the right spot. In this guide, we'll be going over which dinosaurs to tame and what use they might serve you in the world of Ark.

Rex

It's difficult to start this list off with anything else but the apex predator of the dinosaurs. Rex is the most powerful of any dinosaur in Ark: Survival Evolved and is certainly worth the daunting task of taming it. Rex has a ridiculous amount of HP and a high melee attack stat, meaning that players will be able to use it as a tank in both PvE and PvP battles. It's also quite useful to raid an enemy's base, as players won't have much to combat you on a trustworthy Rex. Also, players can use Rex to cheese several different boss fights in Ark. Taming this giant dino might take some time and a few tries, but it's worth it to take control of the fiercest predator the game has to offer.

2. Giganotosaurus

Giganotosaurus

If Rex is the apex predator of Ark: Survival Evolved, then the Giganotosaurus is second in command on that list. While it's not as large as Rex, the Giga can still be used to absolutely destroy anything that happens to get in its way. The large dino also has a few useful non-combat abilities, such as a trick to harvest hide from other creatures on the ground. In combat, the Giga can be used as an offensive threat or a defender depending on the player's situation. The only thing to consider when taming the Giganotosaurus is that it has a Rage meter. If that meter overflows, then the dino will come after anything it sees, including you. Still, that threat might be worth it to tame a dinosaur of the Giga's nature.

Gacha

Moving away from strictly combat dinos, the Gacha is a must-have for players participating in PvE gameplay. A relatively easy taming process means that most players will be able to have their own Gacha and earn the rewards that come with that. When the Gacha is fed certain resources, they produce crystals on their back. These crystals can then be cracked and contain various resources that players can use for other purposes in Ark. These resources can even be specified based on what players need at the current time. PvE players should look to tame a Gacha as quickly as possible for this reason alone.

4. Stegosaurus

Stegosaurus

We're sticking with the PvE theme and going with the Stegosaurus, which is an invaluable dinosaur to have early on in Ark: Survival Evolved. The Stegosaurus is a herbivore, which means it's easy to tame and can offer similar benefits as the Gacha. However, players in the early game will likely tame the Stegosaurus to harvest copious amounts of berries specifically, but also other food items found in PvE areas. Not only are berries a great way for players to keep their HP up, but they are used to craft more advanced items that players will need later. Most notably, berries are used in the crafting of narcotics, which is an item that's required to tame other dinosaurs in Ark. In addition to all of that, the Stegosaurus can carry a ton of weight and has a high amount of HP, making it the perfect travel companion for resource runs.

5. Snow Owl

Snow Owl

While it might not look like it at first glance, the Snow Owl is one of the most valuable creatures to tame in Ark: Survival Evolved. For PvP gameplay specifically, the Snow Owl has the ability to heal players from the sky and also dive to the ground which creates an AoE explosion, damaging any enemy caught in it. Whether players are raiding a base or fighting enemies in the open, this dive attack is a great way to bust open an enemy's defense. In addition to those traits, the Snow Owl has infrared vision, letting it see enemies through walls and other structures. This allows it to target enemies that players might not be able to see themselves. Finally, Snow Owls also produce pellets, which can be fed to the Gacha to produce more resources for PvE needs.

6. Managarmr

Managarmr

It's time for a fun mount to make its way onto this list and what's better than the Managarmr. This dino can glide through water or on land, allowing players to make their way across most terrain in Ark. The Managarmr also has a boost ability that lets players travel at a blistering-fast pace across the map. They can either use this boost ability on the ground or in the air, making the Managarmr a truly versatile traversal mount. For combat purposes, this particular dino isn't the best at close-range fights but it does have a freezing breath attack that can deal damage at longer ranges. Most players will find more use out of the Managarmr as a mount, though.

7. Andrewsarchus

Andrewsarchus

Who doesn't love a dog-like dinosaur that's equipped with a turret on its back? The Andrewsarchus is one of the newer creatures added to Ark: Survival Evolved and certainly adds new elements to combat. Not only does it have a turret on its back, but the Andrewsarchus is also incredibly fast, allowing players to ride it across the map once they equip it with a saddle. Also, despite its smaller size, the Andrewsarchus has a decent amount of HP, meaning players can use it as a tank while they deal massive amounts of damage with its turret.

8. Desmodus

Desmodus

The Desmodus arrived in Ark with the Andrewsarchus and features a similar amount of utility in combat. However, the Desmodus might even be more useful for players. In addition to carrying players around the map with its flying ability, the Desmodus can turn invisible to avoid detection and also use its screech ability to find enemies on the ground or in the sky. If the Rex is the apex predator of the ground, then the Desmodus is the apex predator of the skies. Players can use it in a variety of ways for both PvE and PvP once they complete the almost overwhelming task of taming it.

9. Shadowmane

Shadowmane

The Shadowmane is one of the most versatile mounts in all of Ark: Survival Evolved. The quadrupedal creature looks as fierce as any other dinosaur in the game and has a plethora of abilities at its disposal. Not only can it be an asset in combat, featuring the ability to turn invisible, a number of passive buffs, and a mix of stealth and tank abilities, the Shadowmane is also a tremendous traversal mount. It has a long-range jump ability that can take players across the map in minutes as well as speed boosts when it's in the water. When in the water, the dinosaur has no oxygen bar, so it can stay under indefinitely, only adding to its stealthy nature.

10. Quetzal

Quetzel

The final dinosaur on our list is the Quetzal. When you talk about versatility in Ark, it's hard to not include the Quetzal as both a mount and combat asset. This huge aerial creature has one of the biggest carrying weights in the game, meaning players can load it up with resources and other mounts/tamed creatures. In addition to that, the Quetzal can actually support a base on its back, meaning players could be completely mobile if they wished. PvE players can also use the Quetzal to gather resources on the ground, harvest fish using its long break, and kill creatures from the bird's back. For combat purposes, the Quetzal doesn't feature many attacking abilities but can be used in raids on high mountaintops or during big battles in PvP. As the Quetzal is the largest flying creature in Ark, it features a high HP stat that allows it to be a decent tank. However, its true purpose in combat should be using other items on its back to deal damage to enemies.

That's our list of the best dinosaurs to tame in Ark: Survival Evolved. If you're a beginner in Ark, then you can check out our list of best beginner tips to get you started and make the world seem a little less daunting.

10. Andrewsarchus

fastest travel dino ark

Definitely not the prettiest of tames to acquire but it doesn’t have to be cute to still be useful!

Andrewsarchus is a surprisingly fast and easy-to-tame creature that has a few versatile abilities for your many Ark needs! Though this creature is fast I will warn you, the Andrewsarchus is not great at taking sharp turns at full speed. I believe this beast may not be the best option to take into all battles but it holds its own in many ways and deserves a spot on this list.

What Andrewsarchus Is Great For:

  • Includes a mounted minigun saddle design which keeps the player safe in an airtight armored enclosure.
  • Has the ability to walk on ocean floors making it great for pearl gathering and ocean exploration.

9. Yutyrannus

fastest travel dino ark

Seen as a favorite amongst many, the Yutyrannus is one of the OG must-have dinos on Ark.

The Yutyrannus has lived in the hearts of many players for a long time. This creature is both a powerful offensive and defensive ally to travel with. Whether you prefer using this fuzzy rex for boss fights or for boosting your dinos as you charge into battle, you are going to love having one or more of these guys on your side!

What Yutyrannus Is Great For:

  • Has a Courage-inducing roar which temporarily boosts the attack damage allied creatures inflict by 25% and reduces incoming damage by 20% each.
  • Can also terrify enemy creatures by using its Fear inducing roar. The affected creatures will receive a debuff increasing damage taken and reducing damage done by up to 50% and 30%
  •  Some terrified creatures will flee and will not respond to commands when affected by the Fear roar.  When wild creatures reach the full fear effect they will not only flee but will also defecate in the process.

A well-known mythological creature often favored by many players.

Griffins are one of the fastest flyers in the game with valuable and unique abilities. The only downside to this magnificent creature is that Griffins are not breedable and it can only be obtained as a wild adult tame. I will say that this creature’s pros heavily outweigh its cons by a long shot.

What Griffin Is Great For:

  • While a player is flying a Griffin, you can pick up other players and small creatures like Otters or Compy’s.
  • You do not need a saddle to ride or fly it.
  • Has the ability to perform a divebomb attack that thrusts you toward the ground, dealing quite a bit of damage.
  • The Griffin is able to carry two riders.
  • Comes with the unique ability that allows players to pull out and use their weapons while still riding their tame, which greatly helps with various battles and taming processes.
  • Can strafe sideways unlike many other flyers.

A creature made out of nightmares that has the strength and abilities to make it all the more terrifying.

The Reaper has one of the more interesting methods of taming as you’ll need to find a Reaper Queen to impregnate you… but let’s focus more on why letting a living nightmare impregnate you at all is worth all of the effort and seekers you’ll have to face on your journey to get one.

What Reaper Is Great For:

  • Has natural armor that highly reduces damage by 80%
  • Can be utilized in a variety of different roles for combat; either as a tank, an armor shredder, or as a crowd cleaner.
  • For its size, the Reaper is faster and can sprint farther than most large predators, paired with it’s jumping you are able to travel long distances very quickly.
  • Besides the Rock Drake, Reapers are easily the second best choice for traveling in radiation zones as they are also immune to radiation damage.
  • Able to burrow underground and you can either choose to hide from sight or ambush unsuspecting enemies. The rubble created by the buried reaper cannot be seen by enemy players, increasing the chances of being undetected.
  • Has the ability to use an acid shrapnel attack that slows all enemies down regardless of size.
  •  While not capable of harvesting wood, the Reaper has a unique feature; Any trees it comes into contact with will immediately fall. Perfect for quickly clearing land for your base.
  • Can take on the Forest Titan and the Ice Titan while tanking their attacks.

6. Rock Drake

A beautiful creature that will lead you to the more dangerous parts of Ark in order to get one.

Arguably the most versatile flyer in the game. The Rock Drake has many helpful and unique abilities that almost make it impossible not to have one. Stealthy and dangerous, this creature makes the trouble of acquiring, and raising one worth it!

What Rock Drake Is Great For:

  • Has the ability to camouflage itself and the player riding it by going almost completely invisible.
  • Able to swim at decently fast speeds while not dismounting the rider upon entering the water paired with the ability to launch itself back out of the water and directly into a glide.
  • Extremely mobile as it can climb any surface, up, down, diagonal, and can go upside down while climbing.
  • Fast gliding for long distances.
  • Capable of holding its own in combat against many creatures, even a Reaper.
  • No matter the environment; caves, Aberration, other maps, and even the depths of oceans, the Rock Drake can tackle them all.
  • One of the only mounts that can get in and out of cave systems to explore the surface on its own without needing any additional equipment.
  •  Its natural ability for travel and stealth makes it great at stealing eggs from its own kind and other species.
  • The creature itself is immune to radiation damage.
  • Can detect buried player’s Reapers by flaring up the feathers on its head when you are close.

The well-known apex predator is still one of the most useful tanks and damage-producing creatures in Ark. Known for being the most reliable companion to take into boss battles, the Rex is useful in any combat scenario. The only thing the Rex can’t do is go into smaller caves.

How to Increase Max Dino Level in ARK: Survival Ascended

While the ARK 2 release date remains vague, fans of the world of dinosaurs have found an excellent way to have fun in ARK: Survival Ascended . The improved world of dinosaurs absorbed all the best from ARK: Survival Evolve and reworked the gameplay based on the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.

However, the slight reduction in the maximum level of dinosaurs became a thorn in the side of every fan. Some say that this isn't a problem and you can get used to the innovation, but for those wanting to increase max dino level in ARK: Survival Ascended , here's how to do it.

ARK: Survival Ascended - 7 Dinos With Quirky Abilities

Ark: survival ascended: how to change max dino level.

First of all, it is worth clearing up a few details. The ability to increase your dinosaur level cap in ARK: Survival Ascended is not a built-in in-game feature. So, the only way to do this is to go into the game files and change them. If you play on an online server, you can not increase the maximum level of wild and tamed dinosaurs . The exception is servers on which you have administrator privileges.

However, if you are the lucky owner of a private server, increasing the max dino level in ARK: Survival Ascended is a matter of 5 minutes. Here's how to do it:

  • Open Steam, go to your games library, and open the ARK: Survival Ascended page.
  • Click on the gear in the upper right corner and select Manage .
  • Next, select Browse local files and open the ShooterGame - Saved - Config - Windows folder.
  • Browse the files in this folder and open GameUserSettings .
  • Scroll down the file to [ServerSettings]. In this file subsection, set DifficultyOffset to 1 if it was set to something else so that the line would look like DifficultyOffset=1 .
  • Next, press Enter to create an empty line and insert OverrideOfficialDifficulty=10 . Note that the argument with which we indicated the number 10 is the number that determines the level of dinosaurs, but there is one essential clarification. You must multiply the specified number by 30. Thus, OverrideOfficialDifficulty=10 will increase the maximum level of dinosaurs to 300, and OverrideOfficialDifficulty=15 to 450.

This is what the code should look like, which you should insert into the GameUserSettings file under the [ServerSettings] line:

DifficultyOffset=1

OverrideOfficialDifficulty=10

The next step is to launch ARK: Survival Ascended , then go to Game Rules and World tab . Set Maximum Difficulty to Off . Otherwise, the maximum dinosaur level will remain at 150 regardless of the changes you set.

ARK: Survival Ascended - 8 Tips For Base Building

All you must do now is go into the game world and check out the result. However, keep in mind that old dinosaurs that appeared before will not be able to increase their level . So, you will have to kill the entire current generation to make way for younger and more powerful ones . To do this, open the in-game command line by pressing ~ and enter DestroyWildDinos to destroy all wild dinosaurs. Don't worry, this command will not affect already tamed individuals. After all the creatures die out, the world will begin to be filled with creatures with new level limits.
