Can I renew by mail?

You can renew by mail using  Form DS-82  if your most recent passport:

How do I apply in person if I cannot renew by mail?

If you are not eligible to renew your passport by mail using Form DS-82,  apply in person  and submit the following:

• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship and photocopy of that evidence
• Valid ID and photocopy of that ID
• Fees , which are different depending on your age

Please note : If your name has changed because you are married  and  you show us an ID issued in your new name, you do not need to submit proof of your name change. You must include the details of the marriage on the second page of Form DS-11.

Already using a different name but cannot show the change

If you cannot show the change with a court order, divorce decree, or marriage certificate, apply in person and submit:

• Your evidence of U.S. citizenship
• Valid ID issued in the name you are currently using and photocopy of that ID

What should I do if my name is different than what is on my citizenship evidence, or I cannot show my new name through marriage or on a court order?

You may need to fill out  Form DS-60: Affidavit Regarding a Change of Name  if:

• The name you are using is different than the name on your evidence of U.S. citizenship, or
• Your new name is not shown on a court order or through marriage.

This form must be completed by two people who have known you by both names. You must also submit three certified or original public records that show you have used the new name for five years or more.

Correct a Data or Printing Error

You can correct your passport if there is a data or printing error. A data error may include an issue with your name, gender, or place of birth. A printing error may include data is missing on the biographical page, discoloration, or crooked printing. We will correct the error at no charge if the passport is still valid.

• Your current passport
• One color photo
• Evidence of the error (e.g. your U.S. birth certificate showing the correct spelling of your last name).
• You will not have to submit any fees.
• If you are reporting the error within one year of us issuing your incorrect passport, the new passport will be valid for 10 years.
• If you are reporting the error after one year, the new passport will be valid until the expiration date of your original, incorrect passport.

I'd call up the airline and ask them to change the name on the ticket to your maiden name. You may have to pay a fee to do this, but quicker than waiting for an up to date passport.

Could be worth carrying a copy of your marriage certificate, just in case anyone asks.

You have bought tickets to go to Europe and so whatever name is on your ticket needs to match your passport! That's it. They need to match. I am not sure in what name you purchased the ticket? IF you don't have a passport to match that name you won't travel.

#1 has it. The name on your ticket and passport must match, exactly. While you **may** get away with it with a sympathetic check in agent and gate agent (who will do the Docs check) there's an equal chance they won't let you board. And you'll have that dilemma for both the outbound and return.

Irrelevant of how you arrived at your name, and the middle parts of it, your ticket is booked for someone called cecilia Franco. Your passport is for cecilia Wilde. You won't be able to travel. Security is tight these days and all the marriages certificates in the world won't fix it, you need to change your ticket.

It's unclear what your ticket says. If it has your maiden name on if then you are literally good to go.

I took the OP as meaning her maiden name was Wilde and her married name is a double barreled "Wilde Franco" (think Jessica Ennis-Hill).

She says she did not hyphenate, so effectively her last name is Franco....

Froggy, the last name can still be double barreled without a hyphen. Think (I know some people might not like to) .... Iain Duncan Smith. Married to Betsy Duncan Smith. The surname is double barreled, two words no hyphen.

The issue is that Celia's name on the ticket will be "WILDEFRANCO/CELIAA". That's different from "WILDE/CELIAA" and enough to have someone call it.

How to Book Travel During a Name Change

Regardless of the reason for changing your legal name, chances are you are ready to start using your new name . However, when booking travel around the time of your name change -- perhaps a honeymoon after your wedding -- you'll need to be careful. This is because airlines, hotels, security agents and immigration officers will need to verify your identity, and obviously you want to make these interactions as quick and painless as possible.

Ideally, you'll determine the correct name to use before applying for a passport (if needed) and booking flights, hotels and other non-refundable activities that require identification. So, this guide will focus on how you should book travel and apply for a passport during and shortly after a name change. But, as mistakes are bound to happen with some travelers, we'll also consider how to fix your travel plans when you realize you've used the wrong name.

How to Book Travel

Whether to use your previous name or new name when booking travel that will occur shortly after a name change depends on one thing: whether you plan to update your passport -- or ID, for domestic travel -- before or after your trip. This is because the name on your passport must match the name on your airline tickets -- regardless of whether this is the name you currently go by.

If you don't have a valid passport -- and need one for your trip -- you'll want to apply for a passport using your previous name if you will be traveling within six to eight weeks of your legal name change. After all, you can request a new passport with your new name within a year of your passport being issued for no additional charge. Just submit the following by mail once you're ready to update the name in your barely used passport:

• Form DS-5504
• Your most recent US passport
• Your original or certified name-change document, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order
• One color passport photo

When to Use Your Previous Name

If you'll be traveling with identification that uses your previous name, use your previous name when booking travel. For simplicity, just travel as if your previous name is still your name. If you're uncertain whether you'll be able to get a new passport with your new name before traveling, take the conservative route and use your previous name and carry your passport showing this previous name.

When to Use Your New Name

If you're not traveling soon after your name change, and hence have time to deal with changing your name legally and getting a new passport before travel, then you can book travel using your new name. For example, I got married in August and didn't take a honeymoon until December so I had ample time to go through all the name-change procedures and get a new passport before my December travel. Once you get a new passport, be sure to update your Global Entry .

Of course, if you travel frequently you'll need to consider when you'll be home long enough to get new identification. Although some states can print a new driver's license the same day, passports usually take longer. However, if you have urgent international travel plans within the next two or three weeks you can make an appointment at a passport agency or center ; these passport agencies or centers can get you a passport within hours of when you arrive at their office if needed. Otherwise, you'll want to allow four to six weeks for expedited passport service and at least six weeks for routine passport service.

How to Fix Issues

So, your trip is approaching and you've determined that you've booked travel under a different name than the identification that you'll take on your trip. If the name mismatch is for a hotel or tour, this may not be a huge issue. In these cases, your first plan should be to call the hotel or tour company, explain your situation and ask them to simply update your name.

But, in the case of air tickets -- or other transport where you'll be crossing borders or going through ID checks -- a name mismatch will likely be problematic. So, you'll want to fix this issue sooner rather than later. Here are some suggestions, generally in the order of the most reasonable to the least reasonable:

• If the ticket is refundable or offers free cancellation, cancel your ticket and rebook a new ticket.
• Call the airline and change the name. There's usually a change fee involved , and these fees can range from modest to ridiculous. A name change may not be possible with some airlines, even with a document like a marriage certificate.
• Obtain identification that matches the name on the ticket.
• Purchase a new ticket in the correct name, and abandon the original ticket.

Some of these solutions won't cost you anything, while others will end up being rather expensive and/or time-consuming. Credit card travel protections won't cover these costs -- although change fees may be eligible for the airline incidental fee credit that comes with cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, the American Express® Gold Card, the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card -- but some individual travel insurance plans may cover you. So, if you purchased travel insurance for your trip, take a look at your plan to see if these fees might be covered.

Or, although I don't recommend it, you could try to travel on a ticket with a different name. My one experience flying domestically on a ticket with a slightly different first name -- Katie versus Kathryn -- didn't even elicit a comment from the check-in agent or TSA agent. But, chances are you won't be as lucky if you attempt to fly with a mismatched last name, so be ready to pay an expensive name change fee, purchase a new ticket or even miss your flight if things don't go well.

Bottom Line

When booking travel that will occur around a name change, use the name that will appear on the identification that you'll use when traveling. This means that if you don't have a passport or your passport is expired, you may need to apply for a passport with your previous name even if you'll be traveling after a wedding or other event during which you adopted a new name. In some cases, this may mean that all of your bills, records and identification except your passport may show your new name -- but if you're traveling internationally, you'll want to book travel using the name that will be on your passport.

Changing your name, by marriage, civil partnership, deed poll or after divorce – can be expensive and onerous. Here's how to avoid the pitfalls and keep costs down:

Changing your name after marriage or a civil partnership

Your marriage or civil partnership certificate does not in any way indicate the surname you'll have after the ceremony, yet you can use it to prove you have changed your name.

To change your surname to your spouse or civil partner's surname (or to double-barrel your joint surnames) on your passport or driving licence you need to fill in the relevant forms requesting the change and present your marriage certificate.

Financial institutions, such as banks and building societies – should also accept your marriage certificate as proof you have taken your partner's surname if you are a married woman or civil partner.

This is not always the case if you are a married man taking your wife's surname or if you are double-barrelling or meshing your surnames. If one of these situations applies to you, you may prefer to change your name by deed poll (which should always be acceptable proof).

If you wish to travel on honeymoon under your new name, you can change the name on your passport up to three months before the ceremony, using form Passports for newlyweds and civil partners (pdf).

Changing your name by deed poll

A "change of name deed poll" is simply a document that contains the following three declarations:

I am abandoning my previous name.

I will use my new name at all times.

I require all persons to address me by my new name only.

You must sign and date this declaration in both your old and your new name. Your new name must contain both a forename and a surname and be pronounceable, as well complying with other common sense restrictions specified by the Home Office. Two witnesses, who aren't related to you, must also sign your deed poll and give their name, occupations and addresses.

You can prepare it yourself using the legal phrases shown in Ministry of Justice form LoC020 , or pay a solicitor or specialist agency to help you.

The biggest agencies charge about £35, although the UK Deed Poll Office and the Legal Deed Poll Service charge less than £15, and you can get a free template from Free UK Deed Poll , which is accepted by the DVLA, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, NatWest, the Co-operative Bank, First Direct, HSBC, CallCredit and Nationwide.

If you go for the DIY option, create the declaration then print off a few copies on good quality paper or parchment paper and get them witnessed and signed. Present this document to all relevant government authorities and financial institutions as you would a marriage certificate.

For extra security, you can get your deed poll witnessed in front of a solicitor for a set "oath fee" of £5.

If you are changing your child's name by deed poll it is more complex, so it may be worth going to a specialist agency or lawyer. If you want to do it yourself, everyone who has legal responsibility for the child should give their consent to the change in an accompanying letter, and if the child is aged 16 or 17 he or she should also give consent. To change a child's forename before their first birthday you must apply to the General Register Office.

Changing your name after divorce

All you need to revert your ID and bank accounts back to your maiden name after you divorce is your decree absolute and your marriage certificate. Alternatively, you can change your name by deed poll and present this document instead.

Cut your costs

To change the name on your passport, you have to renew it, which costs £72.50. However, it is legal for you to use a passport in your previous name until it expires. Just remember the name on any airline tickets must match the name on your passport or you may not be allowed to travel.

By contrast, you must immediately change your name on your driving licence – which costs nothing using form D1 – and you can be fined up to £100 if you fail to notify the DVLA of a name change.

It's also important to update your details (for free) on the electoral roll or you may be turned down for credit in your new name. Use the voter registration form .

Be wary of any company which offers to change your name for a fee. For example, if you own a property, many solicitors will try to charge you to register a name change at the Land Registry, but you can do it yourself for nothing .

Similarly, it shouldn't cost you a penny to notify banks, doctors, dentists, employers, nurseries, schools, HMRC, insurance companies, TV licensing, local councils, PayPal, utility companies, loyalty card schemes and the police (if you have a criminal record).

When you send your original documents in the post, obtain a free certificate of posting from the post office, as then you are entitled to claim up to £46 compensation in case it is mislaid in transit. It costs £9.25 to replace a marriage or civil partnership certificate (although extra copies usually cost less if you request them at the ceremony).

Cheques in your old name

If you receive a cheque made out to your previous name, most banks will let you cash it as long as you present it with documentation proving you used to hold that name.
