Explore the rugged beauty of an Arctic island chain

cruise spitsbergen norway

“Spitsbergen” is Dutch - spits meaning “pointed” and bergen meaning “mountains.” It was so named in 1596 by Dutch Arctic explorer Willem Barentsz. It took some time for the name to catch on – English whalers would refer to the archipelago as Greenland until the late 1780s. The Norwegian name is Svalbard. Touched by three seas – The Norwegian Sea, the Greenland Sea, and the Arctic Ocean – Spitsbergen is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago of northern Norway. Its rugged mountains and rolling tundra offer plenty of opportunities for hiking and snowshoeing. Spitsbergen is by far the largest wilderness area of Europe and offers some of the finest scenery and wildlife experiences in the world.

Around Spitsbergen, in the Realm of the Polar Bear & Ice

There are journeys and there are journeys. This trip is one that falls in the latter category. I look back on a fantastic experience, during which the awareness of human behavior on this vulnerable planet (and especially the Arctic) became very clear to me.

Around Spitsbergen - Kvitoya, In the realm of Polar Bear & Ice

Best expedition ever, paradise on earth, svalbard faq, where do we go on svalbard.

Svalbard is one of our core Arctic locations, a great place for enjoying wildlife, activities, and scenery. For this reason, there are too many areas we visit to list here. For details on intended routes and landing sites, see the Svalbard page at our website.

What is the best time to travel to Spitsbergen?

This depends on what you want to experience at Spitsbergen. In case you want to experience the Polar night or the Aurora Borealis, November to February is the best time to travel to Spitsbergen. Do you want to see the midnight sun and enjoy boat trips, kayaking or hiking? Then the best time to visit Spitsbergen is around May until September. This is the summer period of Spitsbergen.

When is the winter season in Spitsbergen?

The sun sets for the last time in Spitsbergen in mid-September and rises above the horizon again in mid-February. The winter landscape and temperatures prevail until May.

What is the temperature and weather like in Svalbard?

The weather in Spitsbergen differs per area and location. Although snow can occur throughout the year in Svalbard, the North Atlantic Current helps provide Svalbard with warmer temperatures than many other areas within similar latitudes. However, strong winter breezes, low pressure and the combination of wet sea air and cold polar air can lead to rapidly changing weather conditions, especially during the winter months. During the winter season, the temperature in Spitsbergen can can drop to -16 to -12 degrees Celsius (3 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit). Adding in the wind chill factor means the weather can feel much colder. July is the warmest month of the year with an average temperature between 3 and 8 degrees Celsius (37 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit).  We therefore recommend that you bring a variety of warm clothes for your Spitsbergen cruise.

Where can I see polar bears during a Svalbard voyage?

As polar bears can travel great distances in a day, it is impossible to say where and when we will spot them. Sea ice is the best place to look, so we tend to focus our efforts there. Though you will have a good chance of seeing polar bears in Svalbard, nature makes the decisions. Sightings cannot be guaranteed.

What wildlife can I see in Spitsbergen?

Your cruise to Spitsbergen will come with an enormous amount of opportunity to spot wildlife. Polar bears are obviously the main attraction regarding wildlife. There are six national parks throughout Spitsbergen, and Svalbard alone is known to contain, Polar bears, reindeer, Arctic fox, numerous birds (such as guillemots and little auks) and several high Arctic seal species inhcluding the iconic Walrus. You might also encounter a variety of whales including the largest of them all: the Blue whale.

Svalbard weather

Svalbard is located in the high Arctic and shares the Arctic’s designation as a technical desert when it comes to annual precipitation (or lack thereof). Particularly the eastern part of Svalbard sees relatively little precipitation annually. The west coast sees more precipitation in the form of rain and snow. Depending on when you take your Svalbard cruise you can expect temperatures to average anywhere from -14°C in the winter to 6°C in the summer.

Facts about Svalbard

  • The name “Svalbard” is an old name (going back to at least the 1100s) meaning “cold coasts.”
  • Longyearbyen, Svalbard’s only true town, was founded by an American in 1906. It has a little over 2000 inhabitants.
  • Almost 65% of Svalbard is a protected nature reserve or a national park.
  • Svalbard is the archipelago (chain of islands) off the north coast of Norway.
  • Svalbard has the world’s third biggest ice sheet, coming behind only Antarctica and Greenland.
  • Svalbard is made up of 4 main islands, and almost 150 smaller islands.
  • Nobody gets buried on Svalbard. Because of the cold in the ground bodies generally fail to decompose, meaning that the graveyards would quickly get overrun. Therefore bodies are shipped to mainland Norway and buried there.

Travel to Svalbard

Travel to Svalbard and experience one of the Earth’s northernmost human inhabitations. Your Svalbard expedition cruise will take you to a beautifully stark landscape of glaciers and rugged snow-capped mountains. During your Svalbard holiday you’ll explore the preserved and protected history of the region, watch high Arctic wildlife on both land and at sea. Come during the late autumn/early winter months and your Svalbard cruise will be capped off by the great wonder of the Polar skies, the Northern Lights . For the polar bear enthusiasts special polar bear itineraries are arranged to offer the best polar bear experiences.

Spitsbergen – Svalbard

Slow cruise Isfjord & Longyearbyen in the High Arctic wilderness

Why Spitsbergen?

One of the world’s largest areas of untouched wilderness awaits you in the High Arctic. Longyearbyen, the largest settlement in the Svalbard archipelago, has a population of around 2,400 from more than 50 different countries. These nature-loving people living in harsh climatic conditions are tight-knit, with the Arctic wilderness right on their doorstep. The wilderness begins in the town centre and it’s seemingly endless!

During summer, Svalbard comes alive with calving glaciers, bird cliffs teeming with life, unique wildlife and hardy flowers, all set against a backdrop of majestic mountain ranges and endless Arctic tundra. During your call, you can enjoy a range of excursions, suitable for all ages and interests.

We also recommend spending a day slow cruising in the magnificent Isfjord, where a wide variety of landscapes, wildlife and cultural heritage sites are on display.

cruise spitsbergen norway

What to see & do in Spitsbergen

If you are the active type, try dog sledding on wheels, a kayaking trip on the Adventfjord or a hike on the tundra looking for fossils on your way to one of the mountains surrounding Longyearbyen. Another option is joining a RIB safari to explore the hidden gems of the Isfjord with teeming a bird and animal life in front of its many glaciers. Be sure to conclude your stay with a dip in the Adventfjord from the floating sauna.

The attractions in Longyearbyen include art and photo galleries showcasing works by artists who have been inspired by Svalbard to museums conveying the story of 400 years of human activity trough hunting, whaling, scientific expeditions and mining. You may also experience the life of a miner at Coal Mine no. 3 and visit the world’s northernmost brewery at 78 o North.

Svalbard Cruise Forum

The Svalbard Cruise Forum was established on the initiative of Visit Svalbard in February 2023 as a collaboration between main local cruise stakeholders, including AECO – the Association of Artic Expedition Cruise Operators.

Svalbard Cruise Forum has logistics, regulations, and local economic impact on the agenda, and works to minimize the strain on the local community, by working to spread the cruise calls and coordinating the logistics around arrivals. The ambition is to increase the local economic impact and to minimize the local environmental footprint through dialogue between the industry, the operators and the local businesses.

Why Take a Svalbard (Spitsbergen) Cruise?

Most travelers take a Svalbard expedition cruise to see polar bears. Other highlights include walruses, seals, reindeer, whales, northern lights, glaciers, sea ice, dramatic icebergs and spectacular arctic wilderness. Outside of the main town of Longyearbyen, Svalbard is a rugged and inaccessible Arctic wilderness. A Svalbard cruise from Longyearbyen is the best way to access the remote fjords, glaciers, ice flows and islands of the archipelago.

Comfortable, and sometimes luxurious small ships, specially outfitted for Arctic polar cruises , safely access the wilderness and actively explore up close in the company of professional expedition leaders. Daily off-vessel expeditions include small craft excursions, hiking and shore walks, and sea kayaking right from the ship. View spectacular scenery, birds, whales and wildlife as the ship cruises through ice and close to shore. Evening lectures enhance your knowledge of the Arctic animals and environment.

Svalbard cruise travelers stand on a snowy hill side and watch a group of reindeer walk the white icy arctic landscape below them.

Where is Svalbard?

Svalbard is located the in the southern Arctic Ocean halfway between Norway and the North Pole . The island archipelago is about 580 miles northwest of Tromso, Norway, and about 400 miles east of Greenland. The archipelago, not counting sea ice, is about the size of West Virginia or Ireland. It is one of the most northern landmasses on Earth, about 500 miles from the North Pole at its most northerly point. The relatively warm Atlantic Gulf Stream keeps western Svalbard ice free much of the year, allowing it to be uniquely accessible to small ship expedition cruises . Spitsbergen, which means “pointed mountains,” is the name of the largest island in Svalbard.

Where Svalbard, Spitsbergen, northern most Norway archipelago is located for Svalbard expeditions.

How to Get to Svalbard

Svalbard is remote, but it is easy to get there. Especially for travelers from Europe or the East Coast of the United States. To get to Svalbard most travelers will fly to Oslo, Norway, then fly to Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Oslo is well worth a day or two before or after your Svalbard cruise. From Oslo it is a 3.5-hour flight to Longyearbyen, the embarkation point for most Svalbard small ship cruises. Some cruises do embark in mainland Norway or even the United Kingdom and proceed to Svalbard from there; more on that below.

Cruises from Longyearbyen are the most efficient way to explore Svalbard and Spitsbergen. Some cruises will include a charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, while others you must purchase the flight yourself. Scandinavian Air (SAS) is the primary carrier for flights to Longyearbyen. Some cruise operators will include an overnight in Longyearbyen, while others you must arrange it yourself. You may wish to add a night to explore this unique Arctic town. When you book a cruise, our experts can help with advice and arrangements for flights and hotels.

Svalbard Small Ship Cruises

Below find details on the most common types of Svalbard & Spitsbergen cruises. Learn more about how to choose the best cruise for you. Contact our experts for personalized recommendations.

Svalbard Cruises from Longyearbyen

The most popular and efficient cruises to Svalbard are from Longyearbyen. Longyearbyen cruises range from 7-15 days. Cruises out of Longyearbyen do not spend time crossing from Norway or Greenland. They focus solely on the Svalbard and Spitsbergen archipelago, so your time is maximized in search of polar bears, glaciers and wildlife.

There are a huge variety of Svalbard cruises from Longyearbyen. Shorter cruises ranging from 7-10 days specialize in Northern Spitsbergen or Southern Spitsbergen. Longer cruises will attempt to circumnavigate Svalbard if conditions allow. Svalbard circumnavigation cruises are usually scheduled later in the year when sea ice has abated. Late in the season in August and September, Svalbard small ship cruises have a chance to view the northern lights.

C ruise Northern Norway & Svalbard

Some Svalbard expedition cruises will embark on mainland Norway, usually Oslo, before cruising the Norwegian fjords and continuing to Svalbard. This way, you combine Northern Norway and Svalbard in one epic cruise. Northern Norway and Svalbard cruises are longer than a cruise to Spitsbergen only, averaging 11-17 days. A cruise from Norway to Svalbard may include a visit to Bear Island, the southernmost island in Svalbard. Bear Island is not visited on any Svalbard cruise from Longyearbyen.

Svalbard & Beyond – Epic Arctic Voyages

It is also possible to combine an expedition cruise to Svalbard with a Greenland cruise or an Iceland cruise . Some epic voyages will include all three. And there are even routes that include the best of northern Scotland and Norway before sailing to Svalbard. Or once-in-a-lifetime North Pole expedition routes that visit the Top of the World as well as Svalbard. Expect to cruise for at least two weeks and sometimes longer to experience an epic Arctic adventure to Svalbard and beyond.

Svalbard Polar Bear Cruises

Svalbard is the polar bear cruise hub since it’s the best place in the world to see a polar bear from a cruise ship. The archipelago is home to about 3,000 polar bears, which exceeds the human population. While it is not guaranteed to see a polar bear on a Svalbard cruise, it is rare to not see at least one on a week-long cruise.

Higher densities of bears are found on the east coast and along the fjords of the northern part of the archipelago. The islands of Hopen, Noradaustalandet, Edgeoya, Svenskoya and Kongsoya are recognized as important polar bear habitat, so look for polar bear cruise itineraries that attempt to include these sites if you are particularly keen to see polar bears.

Polar bears require a hunting ground of sea ice to hunt their main food source of seals. They are highly nomadic and spend their summers along the edge of the ice, accessible by polar vessel. Guests aboard Svalbard polar bear cruises should be patient and remember to stay quiet on deck. Viewing a polar bear in Svalbard is an experience that will last a lifetime.

Svalbard Cruise Cost

The average cost for a Svalbard cruise is about $7,500 per person. The least expensive cruises start at about $4,000 per person. Luxury Svalbard cruises can cost $15,000 or more per person. The cost to travel to Svalbard aboard a small ship varies by the time of year, ship, cabin, length of cruise and more. Let our experts know your budget and we’ll help you find the right cruise at the best price.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Svalbard?

You may be surprised to learn that Svalbard is a year-round travel destination. The earliest expedition cruises begin in April. The last cruises of the season operate in September. The best time for cruising in Svalbard is July and August when ice is navigable and wildlife is most accessible. Expedition guides advise that the best time to view polar bears in Svalbard is from May to September.

While traveling so far above the Arctic circle many travelers naturally wonder if they will see the northern lights. Since most of the Svalbard cruising season occurs under the midnight sun (a time when the sun never sets), you likely won’t view the northern lights on your cruise. Choose the latest departure possible if you want a slight chance, but better yet, book a dedicated northern lights cruise focused on the best route and timing.

Svalbard Cruise or Spitsbergen Cruise – What’s the Difference

For purposes of expedition cruising , a Svalbard small ship cruise and a Spitsbergen small ship cruise are the same. The difference between the two are only semantic, based on geopolitical and historical considerations.

Originally the archipelago was called Spitsbergen and many people still refer to it as Spitsbergen. In 1925 Norway took possession of the islands, and in a nod to the Nordic history of the area renamed it the original Norse/Viking name of Svalbard which means “cold coast.”

Today either name is acceptable, and you will see various cruises use these names interchangeably. So, whether you book at Spitsbergen cruise or a cruise to Svalbard, you will be traveling to the same remarkable destination.

In Arctic Svalbard Norway a massive mile long glacier lays between a mountain range and seen mirrored on a body of water below.

Svalbard Cruises & Climate Change

Climate change is dramatically affecting Svalbard and its ecosystems. The Svalbard cruising season used to begin in June. Now cruises operate as early as April. Most Spitsbergen small ship cruises will tackle this topic head on educating travelers about how the Arctic and its inhabitants are affected by climate change. Rather than take a doomsday approach to see it before it’s gone, we hope you will visit and fall in love. Only when you love a place are you motivated to protect it. Changing our behavior to help reduce climate change to protect Svalbard and its polar bears and icescapes will do us all some good.

Hear it From Svalbard Cruise Travelers

The trip was amazing, it was everything we hoped for and more. Iceland is a a beautiful country with breathtaking scenery, a fascinating history, interesting culture and abundant wildlife.

The trip exceeded my expectations! The Expedition ship was extremely well equipped for adventure.

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

Fulfilling all that was on the detailed expectations. The wilderness of the Arctic was the big plus and to be there in real life and not just seeing it via the TV screen was humbling. To go where there had never been habitation and nature ruled was awesome. The kayaking made the holiday.

We felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

The boat and staff were outstanding, great food and service, excellent wildlife with loads of whales, polar bears, walruses, arctic foxes, and arctic birds.

The trip was amazing, it was everything we hoped for and more. Iceland is a a beautiful country with breathtaking scenery, a fascinating history, interesting culture and abundant wildlife.

Accommodations Review

The National Geographic Explorer was awesome, our cabin was spacious and comfortable and the service was exceptional. National Geographic did a great job with protocols related to COVID-19 to keep us safe and healthy.

Meals Review

The quality and variety of the food was top notch. We really enjoyed getting to try local cuisine, the portions were just right and the desserts were delicious.

Crew & Guides Review

Both Michael and Leah did a wonderful job managing the expedition. The daily recaps were informative and interesting.  The naturalists truly enhanced our daily experiences.

Itinerary Review

Every day was unique and we enjoyed every stop and excursion. Highlights were Vigur Island learning about the Eider ducks and seeing lots of birds, especially the Puffins, Grimsey because of the opportunity to be in the Artic circle and the Vatnajokull icecap which was stunning. The flexibility of being able to stop the ship when we encountered whales on 2 occasions was greatly appreciated. We were also impressed by the variety of activities offered.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Taylor is exceptional. We can't thank her enough for all her assistance to make this trip happen.  She kept us informed, was always quick to answer our many questions and made sure we had everything we needed for the trip. We were extremely pleased with the customer service we received from Taylor.

We had originally booked a different trip for 2020 that included Norway, Greenland and Iceland that ended up being cancelled in 2020 and again in 2021. Taylor Cranney really worked hard to move us to the Circumnavigation of Iceland trip so we could travel this year.

Traveler Advice

I would suggest walking on a regular basis prior to going on the trip to be able to maximize your experience on the trip.

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. Watching polar bears and wildlife from the rovers was definitely the highlight of the trip. We saw over 16 bears up close and afar. My flight seeing helicopter ride was cancelled due to weather. The lack of activity was tough with very few opportunities for hiking (because of the bears) and no gym at the Churchill hotel. We had a diverse group of ages, interests and abilities from all over the US and Canada. Some travelers had limited mobility but it didn't slow us down because the trip is not very active and suitable for anyone. This has to be the easiest way to safely view polar bears in the wild. Wanted to view polar bears and boy did we!

Like the hotels, the food in Winnipeg was excellent. The farewell dinner included a number of Canadian recipes I had never tried before. Breakfast at the Churchhill hotel was nice with hot eggs, bacon, potato and pancakes. Dinners in Churchill were at one of two restaurants with lots of local options like arctic char or bison. After dinner the restaurants transformed into local entertainment with a band or open mic night. Fun.

Our guide was very knowledgeable about polar bears and arctic ecosystems. I learned a lot about polar bears that I didn't know before. Evening programs by locals in Churchill were a hoot.

AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

You don't need to bring a jacket or boots as these are provided. The polar parka was very warm.

The Fort Garry Hotel is beautiful and centrally located in Winnipeg. The Chruchill Hotel was very basic, do not expect luxury. But it was clean and comfortable and warm.

  • Fort Garry Hotel

The trip ran like clockwork. Fulfilling all that was on the detailed expectations. The wilderness of the Arctic was the big plus and to be there in real life and not just seeing it via the TV screen was humbling. To go where there had never been habitation and nature ruled was awesome. The kayaking made the holiday. The extra dimension, close to the water and ice. The quiet away from the ship and the sense of exploration. Seeing Polar bears, even at a distance, was a special reminder of the fragility of the area and the importance of taking care of the planet. The polar plunge was great bragging rights. Meeting such a wide range of  people, nationalities and ages. Meeting the expedition leaders who were seriously impressive. The talks were interesting. [I wish there was] more detail about 19th century explorations to find the North Pole would have been relevant. Also more about climate change.

The display of the main dishes at the entrance of the dining room helped with choosing and sped up ordering at dinner. Plenty of choice at every meal.

Woody’s team were amazing. Such professional people, nothing was too much trouble and their enthusiasm was infectious. Abbie, our Kayak leader, kept us well informed about plans, safety and made it all fun. We did not realize that her husband had had to leave the ship for medical reasons, until she was able to tell us all was well. Her anxiety for him never showed, that was super professional.

Transportation Review

I booked flights to and from Uk no problem. Loved Oslo. I recommend everyone to take some time there especially the Fram museum prior to a trip.

All questions answered promptly.

Don’t expect masses of wildlife, it is a huge wilderness which is an honor to visit not a tv program. Savor the quiet of the ice and glaciers and realize the respect the Arctic deserves. Mindfulness.

  • Introduction to Spitsbergen: Fjords, Glaciers & Wildlife of Svalbard

We desired to see and photograph polar bears. Additionally, we got to see an Arctic Hare, moose from the helicopter. Would have liked to see Arctic fox and White Owl, but felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and just the right number of people with the activities and accommodations to be fun. We prefer small group trips and this fit into that category as the people were divided into small group vans/rovers with each having its own guide. It was also nice that the guides traded vehicles halfway through the day so we all got to know them both and share their information. The Trip Guide Book from Natural Habitat was EXCELLENT and covered all questions and gave excellent information.

All accommodations were very nice.

The Fort Gary Hotel Breakfast Buffet and Welcome Dinner were fabulous and way above our expectations.

Our trip leaders and guides were EXCELLENT....very knowledgeable and informative and extremely pleasant with a very good sense of humor. All the people we came in contact with at Natural Habitat were excellent.

Transportation was excellent and the people who met us and got us to our destinations were EXCELLENT and very pleasant and accommodating.

The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

Have a wonderful time....it was totally enjoyable.

Cruises to Spitsbergen (Svalbard)

cruise spitsbergen norway

About Cruising to Spitsbergen (Svalbard)

Svalbard is the official Norwegian name for the island archipelago located 600 miles north of Norway's North Cape, but most of the outside world knows the place as Spitsbergen, which is, in fact, the name for the largest island in the chain. Svalbard attracts a considerable number of visitors in the height of summer. They come for the scenic mountain wilderness of ice and snow that is home to a great variety of wildlife on land, in the sea and often in the air.

The islands were named Spitsbergen ("sharp-pointed mountains") by a Norwegian, Wilhelm Barentz, in 1596 and were soon after visited in 1605 by Henry Hudson, who reported an abundance of whales. A whaling industry established by the Dutch, English, Norwegians and Russians began almost immediately and expanded to include the trapping of walruses and seals. Today, only Norway engages in whaling in these waters.

The islands also became a base for polar research, as they lie halfway between the top of Norway and the North Pole. A number of expeditions by sea and early 20th-century airship flights left from Spitsbergen. In 1906, an American entrepreneur named John Monro Longyear established a coal-mining industry there, and he named what would become the island capital, Longyear City (now officially Longyearbyen). Norwegian and Russian interests also established mining claims, and the Russians still operate a mine at Barentsburg.

At the Treaty of Versailles, Norway was handed administrative rights to Spitsbergen, and it assumed official oversight in 1925, changing the archipelago's name to Svalbard in the 1920s. Since the turn of the century, Svalbard has achieved a measure of local rule, administered by a locally elected Longyearbyen County Council.

Longyearbyen (population: 2,200) replaced mining with tourism as the primary industry when regular air service was established in 1975. The town then transformed itself from a rough mining center to the attractive, colorful, small frontier town we see today, with many families settling there to engage in tourism, research and government services. Evidence -- some picturesque -- of now-abandoned coal mining facilities is still extant in a perimeter around the capital.

Sixty percent of the islands are designated as national parks or nature reserves, and the landscape and wildlife are protected. The most numerous species of wildlife seen are polar bears, Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, walruses, bearded and ringed seals, fin and blue whales, little auks, kittiwakes, fulmars and a variety of wading birds. The landscapes of mountains, fjords, glaciers, snow, sea ice and tundra are breathtaking.

Two kinds of cruise ship passengers visit the islands in summer. Those who arrive by large cruise liners on long voyages often make a single call at one of the three permanent settlements -- Longyearbyen, Ny-Alesund (a research station) or Barentsburg (a Russian mining camp) -- and then cruise the fjords and coastline without landing. Expedition cruise travelers arrive in small purpose-built ships and use Zodiacs to get close to the glaciers and wildlife or for hikes across the tundra. Some expedition vessels are based at Longyearbyen for all or part of the summer tourist season (June through August), while others embark passengers in mainland European ports. Find the right cruise for you on our Norway cruise itineraries .

The eastern side of Svalbard experiences far more heavy ice conditions; hence, most cruise and expedition ships concentrate on the west side's coastline and fjords. The summer climate, when most tourists visit, is quite mild for an area so far north, with daytime temperatures often above freezing and possibly rising to just above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainfall is low, but summer months may experience fog. The midnight sun lasts from mid-April to mid-August.

Catch the midnight sun (from mid-April through mid-August) in this stunning Norwegian archipelago

Passengers shouldn't head outside of town -- where polar bears roam -- alone

Spitsbergen is home to a historical frontier town, and is the gateway to untold adventures in the Arctic wilds

There are no facilities at the piers, as the town is very close.

Good to Know?

No one should go beyond the edge of town because of real danger from polar bears. If you venture out of Longyearbyen by any means of transportation or on foot, you must be accompanied by someone who knows how to use a rifle. That rule is simply a given, and there are no exceptions. When you do walk around town, you may come upon small Svalbard reindeer, as they often come into the edge of the settlement to graze.

Getting Around?

On Foot: It's a short walk into town, and most places there are reachable on foot.

By Shuttle, Bus or Taxi: If you do not wish to walk from the pier into town, you can take a bus shuttle, tour bus or taxi. Once you're in town, most places are walkable.

By Bike: You can also borrow a bike for free from the tourist office in the center of town (47 79 02 55 50).

There is no local transit, and there are only 30 miles of roads. No roads lead from Longyearbyen to any of the other settlements, such as Barentsburg and Ny-Alesund. Travel to these destinations is by plane or boat in summer and snowmobile and dogsled in winter. In summer, the dogs are kept in an open kennel compound at the edge of town.

If you're taking an expedition cruise that departs from Longyearbyen, you can find flights from Tromso and Oslo (Bergen) in mainland Norway. A bus transfer is provided between the airport and hotels or guesthouses.

Currency & Best Way to Get Money?

Currency is the Norwegian Kroner (NOK), but the shops in Longyearbyen will also accept euros. Major credit cards are fine, and there are ATM machines at the Spare Bank next to the post office in Longyearbyen. For up-to-date conversion rates, go to www.xe.com.

The official language is Norwegian, but most Norwegians -- and certainly those with whom you will be in contact at Longyearbyen -- speak very good English.

Where You're Docked?

Longyearbyen has three uncovered piers. If there is more than one large vessel in port, one will have to anchor off with a very short launch transfer. Two of the three piers are within reasonable walking distance of the center of Longyearbyen, but buses will likely provide a shuttle service from any of the three.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

After spending one night in Longyearbyen, we set sail along the west coast of Spitsbergen before returning for another night in the capital. Explore the beautiful glaciers and fjords, and scan for wildlife. If we’re lucky, we might even get to see the King of the Arctic: the polar bear.

  • Day 1 Longyearbyen
  • Day 2 Longyearbyen and Isfjord
  • Day 3 Magdalenefjord, North West Corner, Moffen, and 80°North
  • Day 4 Kongsfjord and Ny-Ålesund
  • Day 5 Isfjord and Longyearbyen
  • Day 6 Longyearbyen

DAY 1 : Longyearbyen

On the edge of the Svalbard wilderness

Welcome to the roof of the world! From Longyearbyen airport, a transfer brings you to the town itself, nestled on the banks of a large, sweeping fjord. Longyearbyen is the largest settlement in Svalbard, though the 2,000 inhabitants here are outnumbered by snowmobiles.

Originally a coal mining colony, today it is a hub for adventure travellers, as well as scientists and engineers attached to local research projects, like the famous Global Seed Vault.

Depending on when you arrive in Longyearbyen and check in to your hotel, you might have time to head to the aptly named North Pole Expedition Museum. There, you can immerse yourself in Svalbard’s polar exploration history with old newspapers, photos, postcards, several hours of original expedition film footage, and quirky historical artefacts. You could also visit the Svalbard Brewery and enjoy a tasting session of beers brewed in the Arctic.

Spend the night at your hotel, which offers modern comforts in historical surroundings.

DAY 2 : Longyearbyen and Isfjord

Discovering Longyearbyen

After breakfast, bring your bags to the bus and enjoy a guided tour that includes a visit to the Svalbard Museum, where you can find out all about the history, geology, and wildlife of the archipelago. Next, we’ll pay a visit to Camp Barentz, where you’ll learn about polar bears. While you’re there, keep an eye out for reindeer, grouse, and foxes.

The historic MS Nordstjernen awaits at the harbour. Built in 1956, it’s one of our most beloved and longest-serving vessels. Despite modernisation for exclusive Arctic sailing, MS Nordstjernen has retained its traditional Atlantic ship aura and offers a timeless experience not found on many other vessels.

After you settle in, you’ll discover the wonders of the Isfjord. As we sail in Svalbard’s second-longest fjord, look out for Arctic wildlife perfectly at home and witness nature’s raw power as showcased in majestic glacier fronts and rugged rock formations.

DAY 3 : Magdalenefjord, North West Corner, Moffen, and 80°North

To the top of the world

Leaving behind what little civilisation there is, we now enter full exploration mode. In these beautiful yet remote areas, there is no internet, nor are there telephone masts to provide a mobile phone signal. Free from emails and text messages, you can enjoy a rare opportunity to disconnect and detox from the modern world. It’s time to really get back in sync with what truly matters.

The North West Corner of Spitsbergen embodies Arctic beauty in all its rugged, untouched glory. This is a wilderness of steep mountains, stark glaciers, and eerily beautiful offshore islands. It’s also one of those rare spots in the world where natural beauty and fascinating history combine. A birdwatching mecca in the summer months, if we’re lucky may spot a polar bear searching for bird eggs nearby.

If there’s one place that represents the essence of what Svalbard has to offer, it’s Magdalenefjord. Framed by spectacular views of jagged mountain peaks and glaciers, this breathtaking fjord has an Alpine feel to it, despite its remote location in the far north-west.

Magdalenefjord’s beautiful beach is peppered with evidence of a whaling station from the 17th Century. You’ll be able to see remains of blubber ovens, a cemetery of 130 graves, and a memorial to the whalers.

If the conditions are favourable, we plan to sail above 80° North, bringing you within 600 nautical miles of the North Pole. This high up, the sun is visible for 24 hours. Bask under the glorious Midnight Sun as you scan for wildlife on deck.

Directly above 80° North is Moffen, a intriguing little island known for its walrus population. Large numbers of them usually gather at the southern tip of the island. Our approach to the island will adhere to the 300m exclusion zone to avoid disturbing this vulnerable animal.

DAY 4 : Kongsfjord and Ny-Ålesund

Fantastic fjords and mining history

Also known as Kong’s Fjord or King’s Bay, Kongsfjord is the largest fjord on the northwest coast of Spitsbergen. Two imposing glaciers, Kongsvegen and the colossal Kongsbreen, watch over the entrance of the fjord. As we cruise silently, you might hear the tell-tale creaks and groans of chunks of glacier ice about to plunge into the sea. Framed by picturesque mountain formations, it’s undoubtedly one of Svalbard’s most scenic spots.

Hiking in the lush tundra will allow you to observe birds in a pristine environment. For bird lovers, Kongsfjord is a treasure trove. Northern Fulmars, Black-legged Kittiwakes, Atlantic Puffins and guillemots are just some of the species found here in the summer months. A bird sanctuary consisting of about ten islands lies at the inner end of the fjord, supporting breeding populations of protected species such as Pink-footed Geese and Common Eider.

Later, we dock at the former mining settlement of Ny-Ålesund. At 78º 55’ N, this is one of the world’s northernmost year-round communities. Transformed into an international science centre, you’ll find a fair number of research stations from various countries dedicated to the study of glaciology, wildlife, and climate change.

You’ll unearth some fascinating history as you explore the settlement, which today hosts roughly 30-35 residents. Ny-Ålesund and its surrounding area are home to a large concentration of protected buildings and cultural artefacts left by Svalbard’s former settlers.

This tiny settlement is synonymous with historical attempts to reach the North Pole. Discover rich explorer history in the museum and see the mooring mast of Roald Amundsen’s airship “Norge”, before sending a postcard from the northernmost post box in the world!

DAY 5 : Isfjord and Longyearbyen

Cruising into the Isfjord

This morning we sail into the Isfjord, which means “ice fjord” in Norwegian. This is the most prominent fjord system in the Svalbard archipelago. Branching out to many smaller fjords, it forms a lush and beautiful system rich in wildlife and vegetation. Prepare to see immense U-shaped valleys carved out of the mountains by giant glaciers some 10,000 years ago.

To the north of the fjord, Alkhornet is a prominent landmark, an imposing example of carbonate rock, with a horn-shaped mount at its peak. Naturally, the surrounding wildlife has conquered it. This region is home to Arctic fox, Svalbard reindeer, and colonies of guillemots and kittiwakes.

Your voyage comes to an end back where it started in Longyearbyen. Why not take advantage of another opportunity to get to know this frontier town even further?

Get a taste of what it feels to live this far north. You’ll find that many places here hold the record for being the most north anything. The world’s northernmost cinema, church, library, high school, supermarket – they’re all here.

Browse the local shops for some souvenirs to take home, like a toasty Svalbard sweater or a box of local handmade chocolates. Svalbard is a duty-free zone and Longyearbyen has a selection of sports and outdoor clothing shops, so you can stock up on supplies for your next adventure!

Art lovers will definitely want to make time to visit Galleri Svalbard to admire diverse works of art inspired by the High Arctic.

In the evening, you’ll enjoy a farewell dinner at the hotel and say goodbye to your new-found friends.

DAY 6 : Longyearbyen

Say goodbye to Svalbard

It’s time to bid farewell to Svalbard as your Arctic adventure comes to a close. As you wind down from your voyage, you’ll have some time to look back on all your new memories, still holding onto that elated feeling of having just been quite literally near the “top of the world”.

A transfer will whisk you from your hotel to the airport for your flight home. Whatever’s next for you, we wish you a safe onward journey and look forward to seeing you again!

On the eastern coast of Spitsbergen, in the heart of an exceptional geological site , set off to discover the remnants left by the first to explore the region, the Pomors . These settlers, hunters and trappers from Nothern Russia, were the first to discover the Svalbard Archipelago, in the 14th century. At the time, they believed they had arrived on the coast of Greenland. They named this land “Grumant”. This port of call will certainly fascinate history and geology lovers.

Spitsbergen Island cruise port

Region Arctic - Antarctica

Local Time 2024-04-22 03:02

Port Spitsbergen Island cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Spitsbergen Island, Svalbard Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Spitsbergen is the largest of all three islands in Norway's Svalbard Archipelago - together with Nordaustlandet Island and Edgeoya Island . The archipelago is located north of the Arctic Circle, about midway between mainland Norway and the Geographic North Pole - the Earth's northernmost point.

Spitsbergen has total area 39044 km2 (15075 mi2), ranking it Norway's largest (followed by Senja - 1586 km2 / 613 mi2) and the world's 36th largest island. Its highest elevation point (Newtontoppen) is 1717 m (5633 ft).

Svalbard cruises are among Norway's most popular ship travel destinations - together with Norwegian Fjords (along the country's coastline). In Svalbard, tourism is an important and heavily supported industry, popularized) by "University Centre in Svalbard" and "Svalbard Global Seed Vault".

Svalbard islands were first used as whaling bases (in the 17th-18th centuries), then were abandoned. At the beginning of the 20th century started coal mining operations and several permanent settlements were established. In 1925, Svalbard was officially incorporated into the Kingdom of Norway. Today, Norway's Store Norske and Russia's Arktikugol are the only mining companies there.

The list of Svalbard settlements (all on Spitsbergen) includes Longyearbyen (main and largest, population around 2,700), Barentsburg (Russian mining community), Ny-Ålesund (research station), Sveagruva (aka Svea, Norwegian mining community) and Pyramiden (Russian settlement /coal-mining community, population around 20). Moellerhaven is a port/landing point on the island. Instead of roads, the only transportation between the settlements is via aircraft, boats and snowmobiles. Svalbard Airport (at Longyearbyen) serves as the archipelago's main gateway.

Svalbard is world's northernmost settlement with a permanent civilian population. There are other settlements farther north, but they are all populated by rotating groups of researchers. South Spitsbergen National Park (officially "Sor-Spitsbergen") was opened in 1973 and encompasses island's southern end. The nature park includes Lands Wedel Jarlsberg, Torell, and Sorkapp. Over 65% of this territory is covered with ice caps, while much of the rest is tundra (treeless vegetation). The park is also an important bird area with bird sanctuaries on protected islands with freshwater ponds, grassy vegetation and bare rocks. Among those is Isoyane (also recognized as Ramsar site/important wetland). The park supports breeding populations of barnacle goose (around 1000 pairs), common eider (around 1000 pairs), black-legged kittiwake (over 25900 pairs), thick-billed murre (over 200,000 pairs).

Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park includes parts of northwest Spitsbergen (Lands Albert I and Haakon VII) and some of the nearby islands (including Danes, and Moffen). In park's Bockfjorden part there are hot springs and remains of volcanoes.

14th July Glacier (Fjortende Julibreen)

The Fjortende Julibreen glacier is in the Haakon VII Land and has length approx 16 km (10 mi) and an area of approx 127 km2 (49 mi2). The 14th July Glacier is bounded (to the south) by Reppingen, Lovlandfjellet and Mercantonfjellet, and to the north by Casimir-Périerkammen, Forelryggen and Foreltinden. The glacier extends to Krossfjorden (Fjortende Julibukta) and is named after the France's National Day (14the of July).

Bellsund (aka Bellsound) has length 20 km (12 mi) and is located on the island's west coast, north of Wedel Jarlsberg Land and south of Nordenskiöld Land. This fjord sound is separated from Van Mijenfjorden by Akseloya Island and Mariaholmen Island. In 1615, the Dutch built here the Spitsbergen Island's first permanent whaling station (on the Bellsund's south side).

Hornsund Fjord

Hornsund is a fjord located on the western side of Spitsbergen Island's southernmost tip. The mouth of the fjord faces west to Greenland Sea, and is 12 km (8 mi) wide. The length is 30 km (19 mi), the mean depth/average water depth is 90 m (300 ft), and the max depth is 260 m (850 ft). Hornsund Fjord cuts different geo formations, from upper Mesozoic (east) to Precambrian (west) and is perpendicular to Spitsbergen's major regional fractures.

Hornsund Fjord's coastline is diversified, with several bays at the mouths of glacial valleys. Some of the bays appeared in the early-20th-century due to glacier recession. A research station from Poland operates in Hornsund since 1957.

Isfjorden is located on the island's west side and is Svalbard's second longest fjord (107 km / 66 mi) - after Wijdefjord (108 km / 67 mi). Alkhornet Mountain is on Isfjord's northern side, as well as the coastal Daudmannsoyra plain. Part of Isfjorden is designated as "Nordre Isfjorden Land National Park" (wilderness reserve). Around Isfjorden are located many of Svalbard's largest settlements - Barentsburg, Longyearbyen (Adventfjorden) and Pyramiden.

Sassenfjorden (part of Isfjorden) is located between Lands of Bunsow and Nordenskiol. Sassenfjord's inner branch is named Tempelfjorden (located between the Lands of Bunsow and Sabine).

Tempelfjord (near Longyearbyen) is part of the Isfjord and popular as day-trip destination during spring (March-April-May) offering activities like snowmobile- and dog-sledge tours. During summer, Tempelfjord is a great destination for boat tours.

Krossfjorden is a 30-km long fjord located on the west coast of Spitsbergen, the largest and only permanently populated of the Svalbard islands. The fjord branches into Kollerfjorden, Lillehookfjorden, and Mollerfjorden (to the north).

In 1610, the English whaler Jonas Poole (1566-1612) entered Krossfjorden and named it "Close Cove". On a map of 1612, it was labeled as "Closse Sound". A small bay in the southwestern entrance of Krossfjorden was named by Poole "Cross Road" (now Ebeltofthamna). This was Spitsbergen 's first whaling station (1611). The remains of a later station were found there and on a long, low arm of the beach between a lagoon and the fjord. On the other side of lagoon's mouth exists a graveyard from that period. The name of the small harbor soon referred to the fjord, resulting in the modern name "Krossfjorden".

Liefdefjorden

Liefdefjorden (translated "The Love Fjord", aka Liefde Bay / "Love Bay") is located in Haakon VII Land, at the Spitsbergen Island's northern side. This fjord has length of approx 30 km (19 mi). Of its outer part is the Reinsdyrflya Peninsula.

Kongsfjorden

Kongsfjorden (Kongs Fjord) is an inlet (on Spitsbergen's west coast) with length 26 km (16 mi) and width 6-14 km (4-9 mi). At the head of Kongsfjord are situated the glaciers Kronebreen and Kongsvegen. Ny-Alesund is on the fjord's southern shore.

Kongsfjorden was discovered and named (as "Deer Sound") in 1610 by Jonas Poole (1566-1612/English explorer and sealer) who was well-known for his voyages to Bear Island/Bjornoya (1604-1609) and the three whaling expeditions to Spitsbergen (1610-1611-1612).

Magdalena Fjord

Magdalena Fjord (officially Magdalenefjorden) has length 8 km (5 mi) and width 5 km (3 mi). This fjord is on the west coast, between Reuschhalvoya and Hoelhalvoya (Albert I Land). On its southern shore is Gullybukta Bay. Magdalenefjorden is large enough even for the biggest cruise ships , which can turn around 180 degrees inside the fjord.

The first to explore Magdalenefjorden was William Barents (1550-97, Dutch navigator and cartographer) in 1596. Here he discovered walrus tusks, which resulted in naming the fjord "Tusk Bay". Robert Fotherby (English whaler) entered Magdalenefjorden in 1614, claimed it for King James I of England (1567-1625) and named it "Maudlen Sound". He named the sheltered bay on the southern shore "Trinity Harbor".

Subsequently, the British founded a whaling station in Trinity Harbor (currently Gravneset). Later it was taken over by the Dutch. The remains of furnaces (blubber ovens) have been found on Gravneset, along with a graveyard containing around 130 graves dating from 17th to late 18th century.

Raudfjorden

Raudfjord or Raudfjorden ("Red fjord") is a 5 km wide and 20 km long fjord on Spitsbergen's northwestern coast. It has two southern branches (Ayerfjorden and Klinckowströmfjorden) split by Buchananhalvøya Peninsula. The fjord is located on the divide between Haakon VII Land and Albert I Land.

In 1614, Robert Fotherby named Raudfjorden "Red-cliff Sound". The same year the Dutch called it "Monier Bay", after Anthonie Monier (general of their whaling fleet). The Dutch first marked the latter name from 1620 onwards. Fjord's former name was later twisted to Red Bay. Robert Fotherby also named the cape separating its southern branches (currently known as Narreneset).

St Jonsfjorden

St Jonsfjorden (in Oscar II Land) has length 21 km (13 mi) and opens westwards into Forlandsundet Strait. Fjord's most popular glaciers are named (listed alphabetically) Bukkebreen, Bullbreen, Charlesbreen, Devikbreen, Gaffelbreen, Konowbreen, Osbornebreen, Paulbreen, Vegardbreen, Vintervegen.

Trygghamna is a bay on Spitsbergen's west coast - near the entrance to Isfjord. Here are the remains of a 17th-century English whaling station and an 18th-century Russian station (used by Pomors / Russian settlers, primarily from Novgorod). Alkhornet (mountain forming cliffs on Isfjord entrance's north side) is nearby. In the mountain's upper part there is a nesting colony of guillemots. Below the cliffs is the den of Arctic Foxes, who scavenge on fallen chicks and eggs. Also on the grassy coastal plain tourists may see reindeer and some bird species - barnacle geese, eider ducks, Glaucous gulls, Brunich's guillemots.

Woodfjorden

Woodfjorden is a fjord located on Spitsbergen's north shore. By length (64 km / 40 mi) it is ranked Svalbard's 4th longest fjord. It is located at nearly 80 degrees north and is constantly affected by glaciers. Woodfjord is west of Andree Land (separating Wijdefjorden and Woodfjorden).

Hinlopen Strait

Hinlopen Strait (officially Hinlopenstretet) separates Spitsbergen from Nordaustlandet Island and has length 150 km (93 mi) and width 10-60 km (6-37 mi). As waterway, it is not easily passable due to pack ice in the region.

The strait is named after Thijmen Jacobsz Hinlopen (1572–1637), one of the leaders of Noordsche Compagnie (Dutch merchant and whaling company). Its northern part (between the peninsulas Mosselhalvoya and Storsteinhalvoya) is called Nordporten. Its southern part (Sorporten) widens up between Bastian Islands and Brasvellbreen Glacier.

Hinlopen Strait was known to European whalers since early-17th-century and was extensively used for hunting. Many scientific Arctic expeditions have passed through the strait in the late-19th-early-20th centuries. Among those was the Russian-Swedish "Arc-de-Meridian" expedition (1899-1904), which had one main station in Sorgfjord. In 1957, Sweden established its national station in Kinnvika (Murchisonfjord), but this base was abandoned in 1959.

Spitsbergen Island cruise terminal

Depending on weather, cruise ships anchor near the island's coast and offload their passengers via tender boats or Zodiac boats (inflatable boats on small-sized luxury- and expedition-type cruise vessels).

  • Reindyrfla is the island's largest tundra area featuring lakes and a vast plain providing grazing ground for waders and reindeer breeded here. On the lakes you can spot red-throated loon (aka diver, migratory seabird) and king eider (sea duck).
  • Alkefjellet is a bird cliff in Ny-Friesland (facing towards Hinlopen Strait).
  • The list of cruise tour activities and land excursions offered on the Spitsbergen Island includes: wildlife watching (walrus, birds), sea kayaking, jiking, boat excursions, dog-sledging and snowmobile tours.

The 5 best Arctic cruise itineraries, from someone who has tried them all

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

There is an emptiness to the Arctic that is mesmerizing.

Traveling across it by ship, you’ll encounter patches of snow-covered ice that stretch for miles, an endlessly white landscape punctured only by the occassional seabird and, if you’re lucky, the sight of a far-off polar bear.

In some parts of the Arctic, there are rocky islands so windswept and desolate that you’d think you’re on the moon; in other areas, there are islands covered with the most spectacularly beautiful mountains and glaciers. The common theme between them all is that they are rarely visited by humans.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Not that there aren’t any humans in the Arctic. There are some, including Inuit who have lived in the region for centuries. But huge swaths of the Arctic lack a human presence, and the wildlife is equally sparse. Spotting the most famous denizens of the Arctic — the polar bear and the Arctic fox — is a rare moment to treasure.

As someone lucky enough to have traveled by ship to almost every corner of the Arctic over nearly 30 years as a cruise writer, I can say that the region is one of my favorite places to visit — maybe my very favorite. But it’s not for everyone. It offers a subtle sort of beauty that reveals itself slowly.

Depending on the itinerary, an Arctic cruise might include days of bumping through icy waters covered by a fog so soupy that all you see out the window is a light greyish bubble all around. For all you know, you could be in a simulation.

But give the Arctic a chance, and it can be life-changing.

If you’re unsure how to begin thinking of which Arctic itinerary might be the right choice, take a look at my picks for the five best Arctic cruise itineraries, chosen after a lifetime of trying just about every possible route in the region. As is typical for Arctic sailings, they are all itineraries that can only be done on polar-class expedition cruise ships — a specialized type of small, hardy cruise vessel built for polar travel and carrying its own landing craft for exploring.

A circumnavigation of Spitsbergen

If you only have time for one Arctic cruise, this is the one I recommend. Consider it a sort of “greatest hits of the Arctic” itinerary. You’ll get a little taste of everything the Arctic has to offer on a single, relatively easy-to-do sailing as short as a week or 10 nights.

On a voyage around Spitsbergen, the biggest of a cluster of rugged islands that make up the Svalbard archipelago, you’ll likely see many of the Arctic’s best-known wildlife — polar bears, whales (if you’re lucky), walruses, and giant colonies of Brunnich’s guillemots and other Arctic birds — over the course of a few days. Compared to some places in the Arctic, this region is relatively rich with wildlife.

Spitsbergen is also about as scenic a place as you’ll find in the Arctic, covered in mountains and glaciers. It’s easily accessible by air through Longyearbyen, a settlement of about 2,500 people on the island’s west side.

Located 600 miles north of the northernmost tip of Norway, which administers the Svalbard archipelago, Spitsbergen is also home to a few cultural oddities. Barentsburg is a semi-abandoned mining town operated by Russia under the terms of a century-old treaty, and Ny Alesund is a small mining camp that has been turned into a scientific research station. Spitsbergen itineraries sometimes include visits to both.

Ny Alesand, notably, was the spot where legendary explorer Roald Amundsen set off on a record-setting expedition flight to the North Pole by airship in 1926. Visitors to the outpost can see the still-standing remnants of the expedition, which include a tower that held the airship before it departed and a telegraph hut that broadcast news of the flight to the world.

Who goes there: Norway-based Hurtigruten is the best-known brand for Spitsbergen circumnavigations. It offers voyages out of Longyearbyen every summer. Most other expedition cruise operators, including Lindblad Expeditions and Seabourn, offer sailings to just a portion of Spitsbergen (usually the north and west coasts) combined with stops in Iceland and/or Greenland.

The west coast of Greenland

If you want to see icebergs and glaciers on a truly epic scale, a voyage along Greenland’s west coast should be your pick.

It is home to what are, without a doubt, some of the world’s most spectacular glaciers and snow-topped mountains.

On a trip down the west coast of Greenland, you will sail past huge icebergs that have shorn off the massive Greenland ice sheet on your way to visit at least a few of the coast’s colorful Arctic settlements.

These settlements, notably, include Ilulissat, site of an iceberg-jammed fjord that is a marvel of the northern hemisphere.

Related: 8 things you need to know about Arctic cruises

If you’re lucky during a visit to Ilulissat, you’ll get to do two amazing things. One is to hike to an overlook near the town that reveals a massive pile-up of giant ice blocks that are slowly flowing down the fjord from a glacier. The other is a Zodiac ride to get close to some of the biggest icebergs that are stuck in the bay just offshore.

It is a landscape of icebergs at a scale that you can’t imagine until you see it.

Who goes there: Seabourn, Lindblad, Silversea Cruises , Ponant , Viking and several other expedition cruise companies offer sailings down the west coast of Greenland. These voyages often include a visit to the eastern side of Canada’s Northwest Passage or Iceland.

The Northwest Passage

For cruisers who love the history of exploration, a trip across the Canadian Arctic’s Northwest Passage might be the ultimate Arctic adventure. That’s because it offers a chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the greatest polar explorers of the 18th and 19th centuries, for whom finding the long-hidden Arctic route between Europe and Asia was one of the biggest (and deadliest) challenges of the age.

Stretching more than 2,000 miles from the Davis Strait near Greenland to the Bering Strait off Alaska, the still-often-iced-in Northwest Passage famously swallowed up the two-ship, 128-man Franklin Expedition of 1845 (a massive and massively equipped British exploratory party that disappeared into the ice, never to be seen again), as well as other explorers. It was finally conquered in 1903 by Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen — who also was the first human to reach the South Pole.

Until just the last couple of decades, traveling through the Northwest Passage remained almost as daunting as it was during Franklin and Amundsen’s time. But rapidly shrinking ice coverage across the Arctic, driven by global warming, has been making it more accessible. In recent years, half a dozen expedition ships or more have sailed into the passage annually during the warmest summer months.

Still, even now, only a handful of the hardiest expedition vessels make a full transit of the Northwest Passage in any given year, while other vessels only offer partial transits.

Related: I loved my 1st Arctic cruise — here’s why

Note that the Northwest Passage is a relatively desolate part of the Arctic. A typical landing by Zodiac during a trip across the passageway might bring a visit to a forlorn, windswept island covered in boggy fields of lichen-covered rocks and low-lying grasses. That is, if the island isn’t covered in drifting snow.

But such trips also include stops at iconic historic sites related to the region’s early explorers. These include the ruins of the last known camp of the Franklin Expedition at snowy Beechey Island and the remnants of a short-lived Hudson’s Bay Company outpost on Somerset Island.

Stops at Inuit settlements such as Arctic Bay and Gjoa Haven are also common.

Who goes there: Most major expedition cruise operators, including Ponant, Hurtigruten, Silversea, Seabourn and Adventure Canada (a specialist in Canadian Arctic trips), offer sailings that transit at least part of the Northwest Passage. Complete crossings are rare.

The North Pole

When it comes to bragging rights, it’s hard to argue that any trip to the Arctic tops an expedition cruise to the North Pole.

The first undisputed expedition to reach the North Pole wasn’t until 1926, when a team of explorers led by Roald Amundsen overflew the destination on the airship Norge. Even today, few humans have ever visited the northernmost point in the world — some put the number at just a few thousand.

Since the 1990s, working (and spartan) Russian icebreakers chartered by expedition travel companies have occasionally taken tourists in small groups to the world’s northernmost spot. But since 2022, adventure-seekers have a more upscale option for a trip to 90 degrees north: A voyage on Le Commandant Charcot — the first built-for-tourists icebreaker.

Operated by Ponant, a French company known for upscale expedition cruises to far-off places, the 245-passenger ship is the first and only built-for-tourists cruise vessel capable of traveling to the most remote, ice-filled parts of the polar regions, including the North Pole.

Related: I just snowshoed at the North Pole — here’s how you can, too

Named for a famed French explorer, Le Commandant Charcot is unlike any other vessel that has traveled across the polar ice cap. It has all the elements of the most elegant hotels on land: spacious suites, stylish lounges, fine dining (including a restaurant with a menu designed by Michelin-starred chef Alain Ducasse) and a spa.

In other words, you’ll not just be traveling to the North Pole, you’ll be traveling to the North Pole in high-end comfort.

Who goes there: The only way for an American to reach the North Pole by ship is aboard the new Le Commandant Charcot, which is operating three or four trips to the destination each summer. A Russian icebreaker that expedition travel companies have chartered in the past for such voyages, the 50 Years of Victory, still is occasionally making the trips, but it is not bookable for now by travelers from the United States and most other Western countries.

The Northeast Passage

A voyage across the Arctic’s Northeast Passage is surely the most off-the-beaten-path Arctic cruise you can do — even more off-the-beaten-path than a trip to the North Pole.

Rarely offered and typically about 30 days long, these are true explorers’ journeys across the almost unvisited Arctic territory that stretches across the top of Russia from Arctic Norway to Alaska.

These sailings cross five frigid seas — the Barents, Kara, Laptev, East Siberian and Chukchi — that in some parts traditionally freeze over during much of the year and only partially thaw during the late summer. Along the way, sometimes spread apart by hundreds of miles, are glacier-topped, often mountainous archipelagos and island groups that passengers can explore during Zodiac landings.

Highlights of these trips include seeing the Arctic’s iconic wildlife — polar bears, Arctic fox, walrus, seals and musk ox — and historic sites related to the region’s early exploration. Among them is Cape Amundsen, where you can still see the ruins of a small stone hut built by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen during a failed attempt to reach the North Pole. Amundsen’s ship became stuck in the ice at the Cape for more than a year.

Only true icebreakers or the toughest ice-strengthened expedition cruise ships can make a Northeast Passage journey. Historically, they have occurred only occasionally. (I was on what was only the fourth voyage by any expedition cruise ship across the Northeast Passage, and that was as recently as 2018.)

Alas, for now, such trips are on hold, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The invasion has brought all cruising to Russia by Western companies to a halt. But, in theory, these expeditions could resume in the coming years.

Who goes there: While Northeast Passage voyages are on hold for now, the trips traditionally have been offered by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, an upscale German cruise brand that was a pioneer of expedition cruises in the Russian Arctic, and New Zealand-based Heritage Expeditions. The latter company traditionally chartered an ice-class Russian research vessel that can hold 50 people, the Akademik Shokalskiy, for the trips.
