Parts that are printed in italics parts will be covered by the ship.

All distances are “approximate distances” of recommended bike tours. The tour details are barring changes, a.o. as a result of nautical, technical or meteorological reasons.

The day-by-day itinerary for Zwaantje & Fleur is slightly different. We will send you details on request.

Day 1: Amsterdam – Vianen

Embarkation and check-in is between 1.30 – 1.50 p.m., where your crew for the week will be waiting to welcome you on board. At  2 p.m. the ship will depart from Amsterdam for Vianen, a small, fortified village on the Lek River. After dinner you have the opportunity to enjoy a short first test ride through the surrounding area.

Day 2: Vianen – Schoonhoven – Kinderdijk (32 km/19 mi. or 56 km/34 mi.) | Kinderdijk – Dordrecht

Today you will cycle along a beautiful route to Schoonhoven – nicknamed Zilverstad (“Silver City”) – a city renowned for its talented silver smiths since the 17th century. Later in the day as you cycle through the Alblasserwaard region you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 large windmills. All 19 windmills have a UNESCO cultural heritage listing and are a definite highlight – you will have the opportunity to visit one so don’t forget to bring your camera! From nearby Alblasserdam you will take the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry, that will take you and your bicycle in approx. 10 minutes to Dordrecht, one of the oldest towns in Holland.

Day 3: Dordrecht – Willemstad | Willemstad – Bergen op Zoom (42 km/26 mi. or 50 km/31 mi.)

As you enjoy your breakfast aboard the ship, the ship will sail to Willemstad where you will start your day’s cycling. Willemstad is a beautiful old fortified town on the Haringvliet waterway. Your bicycle ride goes to Tholen, once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways.

Then you cycle on to the destination of this trip, Bergen op Zoom. Bergen op Zoom is a historic fortified town that once lay on the open waters of the Oosterschelde. After dinner you can take a walk through the old town. Narrow streets, old town, market and church squares and idiosyncratic monumental buildings show the history of a rich and eventful past that goes back more than eight hundred years.

Day 4 : Bergen op Zoom – Kreekrak lock (21 km/13 mi. or 35 km/21 mi.)  | Kreekrak lock – Antwerp

In the morning you will enjoy a small bike ride through the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” surrounding Bergen op Zoom. In the early afternoon you will once again board the ship which will sail to the port city of Antwerp, situated on the river Schelde. Antwerp is famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and is a city with a long list of attractions including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle. Dinner tonight (not included) will be in town in a restaurant of your choice (recommendations available on board).

Day 5: Antwerp – Temse – St. Amands (34 km/21 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

This morning you will cycle out of Antwerp along a picturesque section of the Schelde River to St. Amands your home for the night. There is only one way to describe the landscape around the Schelde and that is “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour.

Day 6: St. Amands – Dendermonde | Dendermonde – Ghent (52 km/32 mi.)

Today you will continue to follow the river Schelde to Ghent where the ship will moor for the night at a lock in a suburb of town. Ghent is a lively university city that boasts a rich history. Since Roman times Ghent’s position at the junction of Leie and Schelde Rivers has ensured that it has been a successful trading port.  In total the city features an Opera House, 18 museums, more than 100 churches and over 400 historical buildings. Major attractions are St. Bavo Cathedral where a number of masterpieces of medieval art including the world famous ‘Adoration of the Mystic Lamb’ by Jan van Eyck are kept and the 91-metre-tall belfry of Ghent, one of three medieval towers that overlook the old city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city.

Day 7: Ghent – Bruges (22 km/13 mi. or 45 km/28 mi.)

Today you will cycle from Ghent through the beautiful Flemish countryside of western Flanders to Bruges, widely described as the ‘Venice of the North’ and arguably the most beautiful of all the Flemish cities. Bruges attracts more than two million visitors every year who come to see the picturesque medieval town center of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historic city and a long list of historic attractions. An outstanding example of a medieval historic settlement, Bruges has managed to maintain its historic fabric as it has evolved over the centuries, with the result that today the city’s original Gothic buildings form an integral part of the town’s identity. While you are here you can visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 8: Bruges

End of your tour: Disembarkation after breakfast until 9.30 a.m.

  • Cycling route distances in the travel program are approximate.
  • On some days you can choose between a longer and a shorter cycling route. Please note that on the shorter routes you may not be able to visit all the highlights mentioned.
  • If you prefer not to cycle on a particular day, you’re welcome to stay on board and relax while the ship cruises to the next landing place.
  • The tour itinerary and route are subject to possible changes due to nautical, technical or meteorological reasons, or other unforeseen events.
  • On the arrival day, you can leave your luggage on board the ship from 11.00 am.
  • Detailed cycling maps, route tips and a GPS app are available for guests who wish to cycle individually and at their own pace. The tour guide is always available via cell phone in case of questions, breakdowns or emergencies.

Day to day program Bruges to Amsterdam

Day 1: Bruges (15 km/9 mi.)

Embarkation time in Bruges is between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The ship awaits you in the Bruges harbor. After a welcome meeting with the crew at 2 PM there is time for bicycle fitting and a short test-ride through the countryside around Bruges. After dinner the guide will take you for a short walk through the center of town.

We advise you to come to Bruges one or more days earlier, so that you will have plenty of time to discover the UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical city of Bruges, aptly named the “Pearl of Flanders”. While you are there make sure you visit one of Bruges many museums or simply take in the stunning beauty and culture of this unforgettable city from the comfort of a sidewalk café.

Day 2: Bruges – Ghent (35 km/21 mi. or 57 km/36 mi.)

You will start your first day of cycling by pedaling towards Ghent through the beautiful Flemish landscape along the Ghent canal. On arrival in Ghent make sure you make the effort to discover the best of what this historical city has to offer during an afternoon stroll. Ghent’s medieval center features lovely illuminated streets that are a must to explore, while the architectural richness in the center of the city has to be seen to be believed. During the Middle Ages Ghent was the 2nd largest European city, after Paris. The ship will dock for the night at a lock, in a suburb of Ghent and approx. 30 cycling minutes from the city center. Before dinner a small canal boat will take you for a guided tour through the historic city.

Day 3: Ghent – Dendermonde/St. Amands (40 km/24 mi. or  53 km/32 mi.)

In the morning you will spend some time in Ghent. Later in the morning you will cycle downstream through a diverse landscape along the tidal Schelde River to Dendermonde located at the confluence of Dender and Schelde rivers. There is only one way to describe the landscape along the Schelde and that is: “magnificent”. It is without doubt one of the natural highlights of the tour. During this section of the Schelde the speed of the ship will be determined by the height of the tide. You will travel from Dendermonde to St. Amands by either bicycle or barge depending on the tides. Your floating hotel will be docked for the night in St. Amands.

Day 4: St. Amands – Temse –  Antwerp (32 km/19 mi. or 49 km/31 mi.)

Today we will follow the Schelde river further downstream through the Temse region to Antwerp. Over the centuries the Schelde river has held strategic importance for the Romans, Vikings, Spanish and Napoleon… Today it is a beautiful waterway just perfect for bike and barge holidays!  Antwerp, your destination for the day, is a harbor city famous for handling up to 80% of the world’s rough diamonds and as the birthplace of the famous painter Sir Peter Paul Rubens. There are many highlights in the city to discover including: the City Hall, one of several majestic buildings constructed during the Renaissance period, the historical City Square Grote Market, the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe Cathedral and the medieval Steen Castle.

Day 5: Antwerp – Kreekrak locks | Kreekrak locks – Tholen (36 km/23 mi. or 20 km/13 mi.) | Tholen – Willemstad – Dordrecht

This morning, the ship will sail along the Schelde-Rhine Canal and over the huge Kreekrak lock system. Here your bicycle tour starts through the beautiful “Wouwse Plantage” forest to Tholen, Tholen once was an island in the middle of the large Zeeland streams, where many people fished for their living. Nowadays Tholen is connected to the mainland in various ways. But it is still a picturesque village with many relics of an eventful past. From Tholen you will join the ship again for a nice afternoon sail to the city of Dordrecht. Halfway the ship will pass the impressive Volkerak lock system.

Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands is your destination for the day. The guide will take you for an evening walk and tell you about the history of the Netherlands.

Day 6: Dordrecht – Kinderdijk | Kinderdijk – Schoonhoven – Vianen (32 km/19 mi. or 57 km/36 mi.)

Today you will start your tour with the “Waterbus”, a fast ferry that will take you and your bicycle in just 10 minutes to Alblasserdam. After just a few minutes of cycling you will reach Kinderdijk, a village famous for its impressive row of 19 UNESCO cultural heritage-listed windmills – one of which you can visit (don’t forget your camera!). The windmills were constructed in the 18th century to pump water out of the low Alblasserwaard polder (a polder is a low-lying tract of land enclosed by embankments). You will then continue to cycle via Schoonhoven to Vianen, a small fortified town on the river Lek (Lower Rhine), where you will stay for the night and where you can explore at your leisure after dinner.

Day 7: Vianen – Breukelen | Breukelen – Amsterdam (36 km/23 mi. or 46 km/28 mi.)

During breakfast the ship will cruise to Breukelen where you disembark to start your final day of cycling. Ride along the Vecht River in an area famous for its beautiful mansions, small castles, impressive houses and their large gardens. After cycling through the villages of Nieuwersluis, Loenen and Vreeland you will arrive at Nigtevecht where you can visit a traditional cheese farm. Continue cycling through the historical town of Muiden and on to Amsterdam where you will meet the barge for the final time in the Amsterdam harbor.

Day 8: Amsterdam

The bicycles of Boat Bike Tours

Always the best rental bikes.

The rental bikes on our ships are unisex bicycles with a low bar and a comfortable upright sitting position. These are stable and dependable bikes, good for miles in the saddle. Decide which kind of bike you want to rent and simply fill in your preference with your reservation. We’ll make sure you get the right bike for you. On most of our tours, the bike rental cost is not included in the tour’s price.

Every Boat Bike Tour rental bike is well equipped. The bikes consist of a lightweight aluminum frame and have highly-responsive handbrakes, at least seven speeds, an adjustable gel seat, normal flat pedals (no clips), an easy-to-use lock attached to the frame, and special puncture-resistant tires. All told, this is a light, stable and reliable bike, very suitable for touring long distances pleasantly.

Our e-bikes also have at least seven speeds and handbrakes. The motor runs on a 400Wh battery and offers three levels of power-assistance. The e-bikes include comfortable gel seats that can be adjusted for height, have a lock attached to the frame, and sport anti-puncture tires. Note that some of the ships have their own bikes on board. They may look a bit different, but qualitatively they are equal to Boat Bike Tours’s e-bikes.

Bicycle helmets The use of bicycle helmets is not required in the Netherlands, but for safety’s sake they are suggested. If you wish to rent one, you can do so during the booking process. If you book a premium tour and rent a bike or e-bike, then the helmet and a “limit of liability for damage or loss” for your bike or e-bike is included in the rental price.

Other rental items Other items such as children’s bikes, tandems, family tandems (child & adult), tag-along, trailers to carry toddlers and child seats are available on request.

Taking your own bike or e-bike? The fee for parking your own bicycle is €10 per week. For an e-bike the fee is €25 to cover parking and charging the battery. For safety reasons it is not always possible to charge your e-bike batteries in your cabin. The crew will tell you where you can charge the battery on board the ship. Neither the crew nor Boat Bike tours is responsible in any way for any damage, loss or theft of a guest’s own bike or e-bike or its accessories. Note: not all the ships are suitable or have enough room for extra bikes, so make sure you check with us well ahead of travel.

Taking your own bicycle

Guests on the deck of the Magnifique IV

Season ends on a weak note

We recently completed a tour from Amsterdam to Bruges on the Magnifique IV. While most aspects of this tour met our expectations, some were disappointing. The ship itself was excellent and the majority of the crew was friendly and professional. The rental bikes were functional but showing the wear and tear of a long rental season. They were also obviously designed to be sturdy and maintenance free rather than easy to ride. (Even on the very flat terrain I was seldom able to use the top 4 gears out of the 7). Our lead tour guide, Frans, was excellent, but his assistant Corrine really needs more training. She at times seemed to be lost even with paper maps and Ride with GPS. By her own admission, she had no clue of how to change a flat, or any mechanical aspect of the bikes. Because she seemed to be under stress, she did not handle some interactions with the tour participants very well. While our ship was being captained by Walter, the shipowner, the interface between the ship operation and the tour was quite seamless, but when Walter left and was replaced by Captain Chris, it seemed like all coordination between the two went awry. While the food on board was generally excellent, it was quite evident that some things were “running out” and not being replenished toward the end of the week, because this was the last tour of the season. I would also have liked more variety in the offerings for our packed lunches (like peanut butter) and better packaging (stretch wrap or baggies) for the routine ham and cheese sandwiches. I would like to compliment their logistical flexibility in being able to pick us up on the side of the river when we we late arriving due to a train system malfunction. We were very thankful for that. Also, the way the two ship hostesses kept everything spotless on board while also serving food and drinks, was as good as any cruise we have ever been on. They (Laura and Joline) worked tirelessly and were always very pleasant and professional. Overall, I would travel with this company again, but maybe a little earlier in the season.

Thank you for sharing your feedback on your Amsterdam to Bruges tour. We appreciate your comments and are pleased to hear that most aspects of the tour met your expectations. Your input about the rental bikes, tour guides, and the transition between ship captains is noted and will help us improve. We're glad to know you enjoyed the food and the dedication of our ship hostesses, Laura and Joline. We look forward to welcoming you on another journey, perhaps earlier in the season. Best regards, Boat Bike Tours

The Captain and crew were absolutely…

The Captain and crew were absolutely wonderful. The bike tour itself was not quite a picturesque as we expected. There were times when cycling in and around vehicular traffic was uncomfortable. The ship is fabulously maintained, clean and beautiful.

Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you found the Captain and crew wonderful and enjoyed the ship's maintenance and beauty. We appreciate your comments about the bike tour experience and will use them to improve.

La Mar (former Fiep)

Welcome aboard of the La Mar, the comfortable and cozy passengers ship. The cabins are great for a pleasant stay. Admittedly, they’re not that big, but they have nice beds, a private bathroom, a cabinet, small safe and hair dryer, central heating and air-conditioning, and a window that can be opened. The space that is left on this ship, is well used for a nice restaurant where you can enjoy a strong and healthy breakfast each morning and a tasty three course meal in the evening. On the upper deck you’ll find a spacious sitting area with wide screen TV, a cozy bar and a large sundeck.

Electric Bike

An electric bike is available on request. A supplement applies, see below. Electric bikes, or e-bikes, are designed to make cycling easier. The pedaling ‘boost’ provided by an e-bike opens up more options, allowing people of different fitness levels to cycle together or to allow less confident or fit cyclists to take on routes they may otherwise consider too tough for their current capabilities.

boat bike tours amsterdam to bruges

introductory

INTRODUCTORY - GRADE 1 The cycling is introductory (1) grade with daily cycling distances from 11 to 57km (6 to 36mi). As with all of our cycling programs, wind and poor weather could make the trip grade change. Should you not wish to cycle there are walking options available. The accent is on keeping a relaxed pace to take in all of the attractions, with time to stop and take photos, visit a museum or enjoy the market places in many of the interesting towns visited. It is considered suitable for children, as long as they have road sense, are familiar with the workings of a bike (gear change etc) and are comfortable cycling alongside moving vehicles at times. *For safety reasons, we highly recommend that cycle helmets be worn during cycle sections.

Our bike tour from Bruges to Amsterdam was stellar in every way possible! First, the boat: It was awesome! Our cabin had plenty of room for the two of us and the shower was unexpectedly nice. Second, the crew: AMAZING! All of the crew on our boat were just excellent. The food was so good! Koen made sure that we were all well fed in preparation for our rides everyday and well fed when we got back with lots of snacks and a yummy dinner. Marianne and Tessie were so nice and very helpful around the boat (Marianne is a great dancer too!). The captain of the boat, Xander, was great and very funny. Last, and definitely not least, is our tour guide Wieger. He was such a nice man and so much fun. I really can't say enough about him. Third, dealing with Tripsite: In a word... Easy! They were very helpful and answered all our questions (no matter how silly) without delay. Fourth. the bikes: They were perfect. We used electric bikes and even though there were days that we rode with the power Read More off to get some extra exercise, we were glad that we got them. Sometimes it's nice to get a helping hand once and a while. Some in our group got the normal bikes and they struggled more than we did on certain days. We had planned to ride on our own with the maps supplied by the boat. We're very glad that we didn't because there were lots of detours due to construction and trail closures and we would've never been able to find our way like Wieger was able to. Plus the group dynamic was so much fun. Our group had 23 people in it from Canada, the US, Italy, France, and Germany. It was so nice getting to know them all. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and would absolutely do it again!

Bruges to Amsterdam Boat & Bike Tour

Boat & bike • 7 nights, visiting: belgium, the netherlands, why we love this tour.

Cruise, sleep and dine on one of five barges

Ghent's jaw dropping altarpiece and the stylish streets of Antwerp

Bruges’ medieval squares and Amsterdam’s world famous museums

Easy cycling across flat Flemish landscapes and Dutch polders

Appreciate the historic landscapes and canalside settlements of Belgium and Holland by bike and barge. You’ll ride along riverside paths and stop off at historic cities on route – the antique shops, cobbled streets and designer boutiques of Antwerp are a highlight, and look forward to Ghent’s magnificent oil paintings. Equally charming are the lesser known canalside settlements, which include fortified towns and one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands.

You’ll pedal past typical Flemish landscapes and Holland’s green polders, riding on flat terrain that makes cycling a breeze. Pick between five barges, from Premium to Standard category - the Premium barges follow Itinerary A, the Standard barges follow Itinerary B. Whichever barge you decide on, it’s worth arriving a day early to fully appreciate the almshouses, medieval squares and tempting cafes in Bruges, or extending your stay in Amsterdam to visit Anne Frank’s House, the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum.

For alternative dates, this tour runs in reverse from Amsterdam to Bruges . If you would prefer to stay in hotels instead of on a boat, take a look at our hotel-based tour Amsterdam to Bruges - Hotel & Bike which runs most days throughout the season.

8 Days, 7 Nights

Grade 1 (Very Easy)

A linear cycling holiday featuring accommodation on board the brand new premium Dutch barge, MS Magnifique III, packed full of classic city and countryside treasures including Bruges, Ghent, Dendermonde, Antwerp, historic Dordrecht, Kinderdijk’s row of time-honoured windmills and cosmopolitan canal city, Amsterdam. When it comes to experiencing the jewels of Holland and Flanders from a different perspective, nothing beats the combination of pedalling the polderland paths and taking in the lowland views from on board your luxurious floating home.

Due to navigation conditions, the exact details of itineraries/embarkation points may be modified at the discretion of the boat’s Captain. All overnights are on board your floating accommodation, the MS Magnifique III. Details of the transits to the next destination are outlined in the itinerary below but may be subject to change.

Day 1 All aboard in Bruges!

Join the MS Magnifique III moored in central Bruges and settle in to your floating accommodation on board this classic premium Dutch barge in the early afternoon, before heading out to explore the extensive sights of beautiful Bruges, the ‘Pearl of Flanders’, the ‘Venice of the North’ and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Graze the fine art offerings at the Groenigemuseum or climb the 83m tower of the famous belfry, the ‘Belfort’, to drink in the views. There’s time to shop for lace, fine chocolate or even take in the ‘Choco Story’ museum or ‘Frietmuseum’ (yes, a whole museum dedicated to chips!). To help you get the most out of your afternoon and evening in this enchanting city, there is a guided visit included in the tour price. You are free to take supper at your leisure in Bruges.

Overnight mooring – Bruges

Day 2 Eastward ho! En route to glorious Ghent

Your floating accommodation heads out early along the canals of Bruges to stop off outside the city. Here’s where you saddle up and your first gentle cycling adventure begins, as you pedal away across the flat West Flanders terrain towards the historic university city of Ghent. Although more modest than Bruges, Ghent is a vibrant place which combines wonderful flourishes of medieval architecture with refreshing contemporary culture and even has Roman roots. Climb up the ‘Gravensteen’ – the 12th century ‘Castle of the Count’ built by Phillip of Alsace – for great city and River Leie from its round towers and battlements. There’s plenty of time to explore the wonders of city centre including the impressive façades of the ‘Graslei’ area and the fine works by Van Eyck in St Bavo’s Cathedral before you meet back up for dinner with the MS Magnifique III at Merelbeke lock in the city suburbs.

Overnight mooring – Ghent (Merelbeke)

Miles  28   Kms   45

Day 3 Going with the flow to Dendermonde

The tidal River Schelde sets the pace today, with the barge’s progress governed by the river’s ebb and flow, so you may cycle off to meet MS Magnifique III in your main destination of the day – historic down of Dendermonde – or need to pedal just a few extra kilometres to catch up with the vessel in St Amands. The stretch of the Schelde downstream from Ghent makes for some super scenic cycling, so it’s a pleasure to just go with the flow and where it meets the River Dender, there are more beautiful treasures in store. Fill your panniers from the little shops here or just relax in a market place café and enjoy history’s patchwork of gabled architecture from the town hall to the belfry and the famous ‘Vleeshuis’.

Overnight mooring – St Amands.

Miles   24 – 32   Kms  40 – 53

Day 4 Onwards to Antwerp

More scenic cycling along the Schelde today as you head out via the old shipbuilding town of Temse to the impressive harbours and historic heartlands of  the ‘City of Diamonds’ itself, Antwerp. Meet back up with MS Magnifique III in the centre and enjoy an afternoon and evening exploring the city with supper in town at your leisure. The capital of the province of Flanders is Rubens’ birthplace, so don’t miss the paintings by this local Grand Master in the gothic ‘Onze Lieve Vrouwekathedraal’ built in 1351. There are more works by Rubens as well as Van Dyck and Brueghel the Younger at the Rockoxhuis, and the Platin-Moretus Museum is a must too, featuring the world’s oldest printing press. On top of all this, there are the medieval guildhouses around the marketplace, the charming cobbled streets and glittering prizes of the Diamond Quarter to discover too.

Overnight mooring – Antwerp.

Miles   25   Kms   42

Day 5 More secrets to unlock

Another day to go with the flow, with the Skipper of the MS Magnifique III deciding on the cycling stretches of the day, according to the dictates of the waterways for today it is time to wonder at the amazing engineering behind the canals and flatlands of Flanders and Holland. For starters, the MS Magnifique III cruises along the Schelde-Rhine Canal to negotiate the mighty Kreekrak lock complex en route to the former fishing village of Tholen in the province of Zeeland.  From here, there’s a cycling stretch along the impressive Volkerak locks to Willemstad in North Brabant, a fascinating town enclosed in a star-shaped layout of Napoleonic-style fortifications. Look out for the Mauritshuis, once the hunting lodge of Maurits of Orange; the ‘d’Orangemolen’ a charming windmill by the marina and the round Koepelkerk, as well as the old arsenal and gunpowder stores. Dordrecht is the final destination of the day – to be reached perhaps by bike or by barge from Willemstad. One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands and known as the ‘Island on the Dort’, it is bordered by no less than five rivers and is a great place for the night’s mooring.

Overnight mooring – Dordrecht

Miles   15-28   Kms   25-45

Day 6 Well, blow me down!

It wouldn’t do to think that if you’ve seen one windmill, you’ve seen them all…nothing can prepare you for the Kinderdijk, the designated UNESCO World Heritage Site where there are nineteen of them in a row! MS Magnifique III will deliver you right into this amazing windmill country, so you can disembark and visit one of these mighty mills which have been pumping out the water from the low Ablasserwaaard polder since the 18th century. Saddle up next and pedal off to Schoonhaven with its majestic medieval town hall, city walls and rows of narrow gabled houses lining the waterside. A super-wealthy place to be in the 17th century, home to skilled silversmiths and clockmakers, it’s still known locally as ‘Silver City’ today. Don’t miss the impressive town clock or the glittering prizes in the museum dedicated to the Dutch silvertrade before pedalling on to Vianen, an attractive small town on the River Lek with fortifications and a 15th century brick gateway.

Overnight mooring – Vianen

Miles   30   Kms   50

Day 7 From country mansions to the canals of Amsterdam

From Vianen, the day starts with a cruise to Breukelen in the province of Utrecht, where you pedal off along the little River Vecht through an area renowned for fine country mansions and castles with extensive gardens and parkland, built by wealthy 17th century merchant families from Amsterdam. Get a taste for the small villages, like Nieuwersluis, Loenen and Vreeland or the local cheese museum perhaps at Nigtvecht. Your final cycling stretch into Amsterdam to meet MS Magnifique III in the harbour, takes in the charming towns of Abcoude and Ouderkerk on the River Amstel. Finally enjoy some time in the lively city of Amsterdam itself, choosing from galleries and museum, great shopping opportunities, time taking in the atmosphere along the canals and cobbled streets.

Overnight mooring – Amsterdam.

Miles   21   Kms   35

Plus, of course, Holland's own world wonder - the Delta Works. Amsterdam to Bruges

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Arrival/Embarkation in Amsterdam (6 miles/10 km)

The barge is moored at the Oosterdok in central Amsterdam, near the train station. Arrive on board the ship, offload your luggage in your cabin, and enjoy a refreshing cup of tea or coffee. As you rest, you'll have the opportunity to get to know your guide, crew, and fellow passengers. Embarkation is between 12:30 and 1:30 p.m., and the barge leaves the dock at 2:00 p.m.

In the 12th Century, Amsterdam was no more than a modest settlement at the mouth of the river Amsteel, with an open connection to the sea. In those days, fishermen and craftsmen built a dam in the Amstel (now the site of the National Monument) and Amstel-re-damme was born. Amsterdam was granted a municipal charter in 1275 and has since expanded continually. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Amsterdamers were the most prosperous Europeans, and it was during this Golden Age that the famous rings of canals were dug. Powerful merchants had their abundantly ornamented mansions built here, thus manifesting their riches.

Amsterdam is a city to be explored thoroughly, and we recommend the following places of interest: the rings of canals; the Jordaan area, with its many pubs, outdoor cafés and quaint shops; Vondelpark with its open air concerts; Leidseplein; Rembrandtsplein; the antique shops in the Spiegel district; Museum Square with the Rijksmuseum (National Museum), Stedelijk Museum (Museum of Modern Art), Van Gogh Museum and off course the Anne Frank House. Other typical features of Amsterdam are its numerous "hofjes" (almshouses), the floating flower market, and the hundreds of houseboats lining the canals. Our compact biking day tours are perfect for squeezing multiple sights like these into just a few hours! Amsterdam is inextricably related to the diamond-cutting industry, which has brought much fame to the city since the 17th Century. The palace on Dam Square is sometimes called the Eighth Wonder of the World as it was built on 13,659 piles.

During dinner aboard the ship, the program for the next day and the global planning of the week will be discussed. After dinner, you will take to your bike for the first time! Overnight in Oude Wetering.

Day 2: Oude Wetering – Gouda (28 miles/45 km) From Oude Wetering you will continue your tour over country roads, banks, and channels through the Green Heart and polders to the city known for its cheese: Gouda. This day is Sunday, the day many Dutch take out their bikes for a ride, and you can join them! Whoever thinks of Gouda thinks not only of cheese, pipes, stroopwafels (treacle-waffle) and pottery, but also of stained-glass windows, a fairytale-like town hall, and atmospheric canals. Gouda is a beautiful Old-Dutch city with a mostly intact city center.

The 'St. Janskerk', Gouda’s 123-meter-long church, with its renowned 'Goudse Glazen' (leaded light windows), the beautiful gothic town hall, and the 'Waag' (a building once used for weighing cheese) are absolutely worth a visit. Furthermore, one should not forget the Goudse Kaas-en Ambachtenmuseum (Museum of Cheese and Crafts museum), the Museum of Dutch Resistance, the 'Weeshuisplein' (famous square), the Catharinatuin, patios around the city, and the Museumhaven, a harbor where historical ships are moored. As on most days, after dinner you will take a walk through the city. Overnight in Gouda.

Day 3: Gouda – Dordrecht (25 miles/40 km) Today you will cycle along the Dutch IJssel, through the deepest lying polder of the Netherlands, Krimpenerwaard, and over narrow cycling paths to the River Lek. Here, you will cross the river by ferry to Kinderdijk, a unique and renowned monument where Holland’s largest number of historical windmills can be found. From the embankments of the River Lek, you will witness an amazing view of the 19 windmills, which are now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is where you will take a break and visit the interior of a windmill. After a beautiful tour through the Alblasserwaardpolder you will arrive at the banks of the River Beneden-Merwede.

A modern, fast ferry will take you over to Dordrecht, one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, situated at a busy crossing of fairways. Dordrecht was known as 'Thuredrech' in the eleventh century. In the year 1220, it received its municipal laws from Count Willem I of Holland. In the Middle Ages, around the year 1350, Dordrecht grew to be an important port town with staple rights, allowing ships to transport and sell their goods in its harbor.

The fifteenth century was a time of disasters for this city: siege, floodings, and the city fire. The city survived all of its troubles and played an important role in Dutch politics. The first open State assembly with representatives of Holland was held here in 1572 in the Hof, a former Augustine monastery. This assembly can be seen as the start of Holland as an independent country as the resistance against Spain was formed here. In the sixteenth century, Dordrecht lost its leading position as a trade city to Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Then, in 1618-1619 an influential Protestant church meeting was held about the indifferences among believers of the church about its doctrine. The stricter believers won, resulting in the 'Dordtse Leerregels', known as the Canons of Dort. Another decision made during this synod was to translate the Bible from Hebrew/Greek into Dutch. This resulted in the first Dutch Bible, now known as the 'Statenvertaling'. Buildings worth a visit are the gothic church Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk, with its unfinished tower (14th Century) which has become a trademark of the city. Another eye-catcher is the Groothoofdspoort, from which one has a stunning panorama over the busy river. Overnight in Dordrecht.

Day 4: Dordrecht – Willemstad – Zierikzee (33 miles/54 km) From Dordrecht, you will sail to the Delta area of the Dutch greater rivers during breakfast. Years ago, an open connection existed with the sea due to the many tributaries in this area.

After the disastrous flooding in 1953, the Delta Works plan was developed and most tidal outlets were closed from the sea by dams. Most parts of Zeeland were, and still are, under sea level, and in 1953, the embankments were too weak and too low, causing this area to be at risk of flooding once in every 80 years. Now, because of the flood barriers, that chance is reduced to less than once every 4000 years.

In Willemstad, an old fortified town, you'll start your cycle tour and ride over the Volkerakbrug (over one of the busiest locks in the world) to the former island of Goeree-Overvlakkee. Nowadays, this land is easy to reach by embankments and bridges, all part of the Delta Works of 1953 now protecting the southwestern part of the Netherlands against the rough sea.

Just before reaching your destination of the day (Zierikzee, on the island of Schouwen-Duivenland) you will visit the Watersnoodmuseum. This museum tells the tragic events of 1953 and is built in recently renewed caissons, once used for the last closure gap. This was done in November 1953, ten months after the storm surge which broke through more than 300 embankments.

A shorter version of today's route is offered by sailing to Bruinisse, from where the group of remaining cyclists can be joined to Zierikzee, after which the Watersnoodmuseum is visited. Zierikzee is a beautiful town and the center of the 'mussel culture'. The Zeeuwse mosselen (blue mussels) are a renowned delicacy. Overnight in Zierikzee.

Day 5: Zierikzee – Middelburg (32 miles/51 km) On this day, you will cycle towards the North Sea, along the Oosterschelde to the Oosterscheldedam. Enormous locks are built in this embankment that can be closed during storms and high tides, protecting the southwest of the Netherlands against the sea.

This embankment was one of the last in a series of barriers against the sea. When cycling along the embankment, one will realize why this has been one of the most difficult and costly challenges to protect the country now and in the future and to let seawater into the widespread Delta area. It is precisely why the Delta Works are referred to as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

After this dam you will paddle to Middelburg, but not without visiting the picturesque port town of Veere. Middelburg is the lively principal town of Zeeland with many old houses, churches, a beautiful town hall, and a pleasant shopping district. Also to be found in Middelburg is the Roosevelt Academy, a liberal arts college, located in the former late-gothic town hall on the market of Middelburg. Overnight in Middelburg.

Day 6: Middelburg – Ferry to Breskens – Cycle to Sas van Gent | Cruise to Ghent (28 miles/45 km) With the unique cycle ferry to Breskens in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (Dutch-Flanders), you'll be getting to close to Belgium. You will arrive at the Dutch-Belgian border in Sas van Gent, the former gateway to the harbor of Ghent, through an area of small villages, creeks, bending embankments and beautiful panoramas.

After a short journey of 1.5 hours, you will arrive in Ghent. From the pier, you can simply take the tram to the medieval center of this beautiful city.

The city of Ghent has approximately 250,000 citizens. Its name, presumably derived from the Celtic word Ganda, means 'mouth' or 'junction'. Indeed, in the city, the rivers Leie and Scheldt merge. In 630, Saint Amand established the St. Baafsabdij, and in medieval times, Ghent grew to be one of the most important cities of Europe (with approximately 56,000 citizens in 1350) due to its linen industry. From the 14th-16th centuries, conflicts occurred in the city and battles were often fought with the Lords of Flanders.

Ghent experienced an economic drawback from 1584 (captured by the Spanish during the resistance against King Philips II) until the nineteenth century. After this period, Ghent developed into an industrial city, with strong socialist beliefs. The old city offers many well-kept craftsmen's houses, Patrician houses and old storehouses, the Gravensteen (medieval castle), the St. Niklaaskerk (Saint Nicholas' church, dating from the year 1200), St. Baafskathedraal (Saint Bavo Cathedral from the fourteenth century, with the painting Adoration of the Mystic Lamb by Van Eyck, internationally known as the Ghent Altarpiece) and last but not least, the Belfort (Bell Tower, fourteenth century). The city center also has many squares and pleasant pubs.

Ghent is a lively town, and although Ghent is proud of its rich past, the role of the city is no means restricted to a museum-city. Ghent is a stunning mixture of medieval buildings, chic shopping areas with beautiful mansions, old workers districts from the early twentieth century which now house hundreds of students, and busy squares where one can sit and enjoy warm summer nights. Overnight in Ghent.

Day 7: Ghent – Bruges (28 miles/45 km) This morning you will cycle through Ghent to the scenic countryside of Oost-Vlaanderen (East-Flanders), defined by its woods, fields, small villages, and castles. From the Aalterbrug (also for the shorter route) the last part of this route takes you over the former towpath along the canal of Oostende-Gent, the oldest canal in Belgium, to Bruges.

The impressive city of Bruges is the end destination for this brilliant bike and barge trip, with many of you likely to want to stay an extra day in this beautiful city. For exciting explorations by bicycle, you can take one of our fascinating Bruges day tours !

Bruges is known for its production of linen that used to be distributed all over Europe. During the 14th Century, the second city wall was built, and four mills still stand upon that wall today. In the 15th Century, Bruges was under the control of the Dukes of Burgundy, who brought luxury and prosperity to the city through the growth of arts and banking. From this period much has remained: the town hall, the many 'natiehuizen' churches, and the mausoleums of Marie of Burgundy (Duchess of Cleves) and Charles the Bold.

At the end of the fifteenth century, the Burgundy court disappeared in Bruges, marking the end of a prosperous period. In 1584, the city was concurred by the Spanish. Religious wars and the closing of the sea caused Bruges to fall into decay. Bruges developed into a poor city in the nineteenth century and missed the industrialization boom. It is partly because of G. Rodenbach's novel Bruges la Morte (1892) that Bruges rediscovered its identity as a city of growing arts and, later, a tourism center. Unmissable sights include the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of our Lady), Belort and Hallen, Gruuthusemuseum (museum of applied arts of Bruges) and the Kantcentrum (Lace Center). Overnight in Bruges.

Day 8: Bruges End of trip after breakfast (disembark before 10:00 am).

Great sites, good value

We had a wonderful trip. Many Thanks to your staff, Mariam and Taylor, in helping us..

For the price, the barge was fine, the food excellent and the barge crew terrific.

Caution you to except overly positive reviews from passengers who all filled out reviews on the last night while receiving free champagne. Aliso, while nice, the leader was not too helpful and not much of a mechanic [4 of the E bikes were not charged on our first ride].

Beautiful scenic biking

Fun, knowledgeable guide. Great travelling companions. Amazing gourmet suppers on boat. Extremely helpful crew when husband needed medical attention.

fantastic trip, fantastic crew

Wonderful crew and wonderful guide Winnie! Everything was as good as described on the website or better. The Anna Antal is a modest but very comfortable boat. Because the tour was small, all 17 passengers on board all got to know each other and the staff well as we traveled together for the week. Even though the crew was working together on this boat for the first time, they worked together as a great team and made us all feel so welcome and comfortable. And the food was fabulous for the entire week. We couldn't have had a better time! thank you!

What a way to see the country! Our guide Winny was fun knowledgeable and open to suggestions. The crew in the Anna Antal were excellent, helpful and participated in our evening conversations and fun. I also have to say that the cook Nicole gave us amazing food!! So enjoyed by all. We would highly recommend this trip, cycling was easy and sites were wonderful! Thankyou so much

First group tour of any kind

The ship crew and tour guide were very fun, knowledgeable & interesting people. The food was amazing! The guests were interesting. The accommodations were comfortable.

Womderful boat, great crew and food, fun time

We enjoyed the boat and barge trip from Amsterdam to Bruges. Our guide was great; very knowledgeable about a twisting route with an occasional detour and about the sights and towns we visited. In the evening he’d take those of us who were interested on a guided tour of the city where we’d docked. We were a very compatible group. It was a bit large (23 people) for one guide but our guide managed to keep us all together and on pace. The boat Sailing Home was delightful. Very clean and ship shape. The food was fantastic. We especially liked the gourmet dinners and stories the chef Eline told us about their origins.

  • 3/5 Tour documents

An Easy relaxed tour for families, beginners and seniors.

The perfect way to experience vthe countryside, quaint villages and unique towns such as Ghent and Bruges. The crew and guide we're exceptional, always attentive and friendly. The meals were delicious, well-prepared and presented. The barge was comfortable but basic.

What a Great Experience!!!

This trip exceeded all my expectations. The "Barge" was quaint (but professional), the rooms were VERY clean and comfortable with good shower. Dining area was nice and best feature was sitting deck where we all gathered after a day of biking and enjoyed a "beverage". The Crew was fantastic. Always with a genuine smile and seemed to enjoy their work almost as much as we did. The chef did an amazing job with great food and really neat presentation added to the charm. With a small "boat" we got to know all the other passengers and by the end of the week we were friends. Such a great time. Oh and by the way, the actual bike riding was good also. We saw and experienced a Netherlands and Belgium that only a trip like this could offer. Daily rides were easy enough for any cyclist and our guide could not have been more concerned that we were enjoying ourselves. He became part of our "Group" and a friend.

BikeTours.com staff reply from Jim Johnson, Founder and president September 10, 2017

Hutch, thanks so much for your feedback. I'm delighted you had such a great time! As a bike tour "veteran," you really know the ins and outs and pros and cons of a bicycle tour, so I'm especially gratified to read your positive comments!

Great trip for casual cycler

My wife and I enjoyed our trip through the Netherlands. Great guide. Food and accomadations above expectations.

Great experience!

Perfect way to experience a country. The staff of the boat was the best, very friendly and always trying to pleased you.

Very well organized and planned

It was very well organized and people on the boat and in the group were really super nice. Each day was a feast at night, and a treat to the eyes when it comes to biking. We went through a lot of pretty open fields, historic sights and picturesque landscapes. It was like riding through a wallpaper. It was quite easy to finish it, given the flat terrain, and was not a really hard tour.

  • 4/5 Bikes + equipment

Highlight of our trip to Europe!

During our long-awaited 7 week European trip, our Bike/Barge adventure was the best part. The local NL based company that organized the tour is great. From the comfy accommodations, to the well planned biking, our week was filled with memorable adventures.

With warm and friendly fellow travelers and an outstanding skipper and crew, we enjoyed delicious meals, informative city walks, fun bike routes with some challenging weather and amazing sights on the land and water. Our biking guide led us with confidence and patience (despite widely varying experience/strength) and added important information on culture and history wherever we traveled.

The smaller size of the barge with only 9 guest rooms, made the entire experience that much more personal. This was also the most affordable week of our vacation! We couldn't have asked for a better introduction to the Netherlands, Belgium and to the wonderful bike/barge experience. Outstanding; we can't wait to go again.

Video: Enjoying every moment!

Bike Tour: Amsterdam – Bruges - 8 days

A supreme cycling tour from the Netherlands down into Belgium, gliding past historic towns, villages and canals – all on high-quality bike paths! Riding from Amsterdam to Bruges, you'll find those delightful places you would otherwise never chance upon.

Take off from Amsterdam in a south-westerly direction. Fill your photo album with portraits of the most picturesque towns in the Netherlands and Flanders: Gouda, Dordrecht, Willemstad, Zierikzee, Middelburg, Vlissingen (Flushing), Sluis, Damme and ultimately Bruges. All remarkably well-preserved gems, evocative of centuries past. And on a more natural note: this predominantly rural cycling tour takes in a number of nature reserves.

This is a linear tour!  Also available with Bruges as the starting point .  Generally speaking, there is more chance of tailwind if you start the trip in Bruges (although obviously, we can not control the weather!) Want to see more of Belgium? Ask about the possibilities for extra cycling days to Ghent and Antwerp or visit the site of our other label Belgian Biketours .

Please be aware that it is not always possible to start/ finish with a bike rental in every location, our bike supplier cannot deliver the bikes everywhere. When you want to rent our bikes, please check with us which starting/ending location in Belgian is suitable.

Your cycling holiday begins in Amsterdam, with its gorgeous 400-year-old canal district; a myriad of museums such as the new Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh, Anne Frank; street artists and performers on Dam, Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein; and the renowned red-light district. The city brims with things to see and do and you couldn’t hope for a more dynamic way to start your trip. Arrange for an early arrival to allow time for the elegant tree-lined canals, tall narrow townhouses and 17th-century canal ring, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From bustling Amsterdam, plunge into the peace and quiet of the Groene Hartâ or Green Heart, a pleasant rural area of low-lying polders, peat meadows and grazing cattle. A flat, open landscape where church spires and windmills touch the horizon and clouds are reflected in lakes and canals. For centuries, people have flocked to markets in Gouda, coming from far and wide to buy horses, cows, meat, turf, seed, cheese, etc. Take an evening stroll around the Old Town, soak up the yesteryear atmosphere and marvel at the attractive market square, 15th-century town hall and Weighing House or Waag.

From Gouda, cycle via the 'Green Heart of Holland' to Kinderdijk, where 19 windmills have majestically stood the test of time since 1740. These mills were formerly used to drain excess water out of the low-lying polder and pump it up to the River Lek, and one of them is open to the public. Your destination Papendrecht is just a ferry crossing away from Dordrecht, one of Holland’s oldest towns, surrounded entirely by rivers. Beautiful bridges take you across into the heart of town, where monumental buildings line the harbour.

A short 3km stretch leads to your hotel in Papendrecht, situated on the north bank of the river just outside Dordrecht town centre.

The result of a major 1421 flood, Biesbosch is one of Europe’s few wetland habitats where the ecosystem has adapted to both salt water, coming in from the sea through tidal creeks, and fresh water, flowing down through the rivers. This ever-changing labyrinth of creeks and rivulets encompasses countless little islands of willows and reeds, a paradise for birds. Ride along at the edge of the National Park, then round off your day in Willemstad, a fortified town in the shape of a seven-pointed star.

Please note: Biesbosch Park can only be cycled on days the ferry runs. There is an alternate route for days with no ferry departure.

Today you enter Zeeland, a province marked by light, wind, water and lots of space. Criss-cross this region made up of islands, taking bridges and ferries as you drift down toward Belgium. Storybook towns with ancient houses and cobbled streets await in the coming days, as you traverse a patchwork landscape of vast polders, idyllic countryside, rolling dunes and golden sand flats.

Delight in a wander down the narrow lanes of Zierikzee. Quaint little houses take you back in time, recalling the glory days when ships set sail with salt, wool, fish, grain and red dye, as far afield as the Baltic and Mediterranean. Your route continues in charming Veere, a distributor of Scottish wool way back in 1541. For 300 years, such commerce brought prosperity to the town, along with a lively expat community. Walk in their footsteps, as you tour the local sights. Cruising further south you discover the nostalgic splendour of Middelburg, capital of Zeeland and one of the Netherlands’ most important trading centres in the 16th and 17th centuries.

After a hearty breakfast, cycle onward to Vlissingen then hop on a ferry to Zeelandic Flanders with its winding country roads, pollard willows, moist meadows and scattered villages. Cutting across the border into Belgium, you will reach charming little Damme, on the banks of the romantic Damse Vaart. From here, it’s only a short stretch to Bruges, known as the pearl of Flanders! This truly enchanting destination has been welcoming tourists for some 150 years. With most of its medieval architecture intact, the exceptionally well-preserved town centre exudes a sense of times gone by when it was at the heart of the European wool and fabric trade.

After breakfast your cycling holiday has come to an end.

The hotels and the B&B on this trip have been carefully selected for their location, atmosphere and/or unique services. All rooms are en-suite. A list of the accomodation we work with appears below. If a certain accomodation is unable to confirm due to lack of availability, we will try to request a comparable alternative if possible.

When selecting the accomodation, we try to take into account as much as possible a safe and closed bicycle shed. However, we cannot do this with all of them guarantee and this partly depends on the number of bicycles of other guests.

On this trip you can choose from Category A and Category B. Hotels in Category B are more economical, sometimes located further from the centre and may have fewer stars.

Instruction video hybrid bike and e-bike

Hybrid bike

Our hybrid bikes have 24-gears with hand brakes.  The hybrid bikes are circa 16,5 KG.

Rental bike

The e-bikes have a small electric engine and battery, which can be charged at the hotels. You still have to pedal: it just makes pedaling much easier. Some experience with e-bikes is recommended, as the bikes accelerate faster and are heavier than regular bikes because of the electric engine. The weight of the e-bike is ca. 25 KG. We recommend a minimum height of 160 cm for the e-bike.

E-bike

Child bikes

For children who are at least 120 cm, we can also arrange bikes (these are 24”or 26” for children that are bigger than 140 cm).  The child bikes come with at least 7-gears and hand brakes.  The maximum body height for a child’s bike is 155 cm.

24" child bike:

Accessories

All our rental bikes come with a bell.

All our adult bikes come with hand brakes.

For children up to 30 months old (max. 15 KG) it is possible to rent a front child seat. This is not possible with e-bikes, due to the display.

For children older than 30 months (max. 22KG) it is possible to rent a rear child seat. This is also possible with e-bikes.

Both front- and rear child seats are €5,- per day.

Helmets are not mandatory in the Netherlands, but can be rented for €10,- per piece. Available sizes: Adult: 54-61 cm, Child: 50-55 cm (only available for children over 5 years).

All our bikes come with both front- and rear lights. You need to push the button on the lamp and it will flash three times. This means that the lights will automatically start working when it gets dark.

When you push again, the lamp will flash one time and the lights will be turned off.

Our bikes come with a defender lock with plug in chain (cable lock that is attached to the regular lock, see picture).

You need to turn the key a bit, take out the pin from the cable lock and attach it to a pole/other bike/fence etc.

When you push the pin back into the regular lock, you need to lock the regular lock as you always do, and both locks will be secured.

1 pannier is included at the 'standard' bikes and the e-bikes.

Height: 42 cm Depth front to the side: 17 cm Wide top: 32 cm Wide down: 23 cm Volume: 20 liters It has an easy click-on/click-off system. The panniers are water resistant, so everything will stay dry.

The rental bikes come with regular pedals, so no click-in/SPD pedals.

All our bikes come with a quick release system, which makes it very easy to adjust the height of the saddle and the handle bars.

There is one small puncture kit included, which can be found in the pannier. In case a rental bike has another problem, we always advise you to go to a bike repair shop or call the bike breakdown emergency number which is provided in the travel documents when you book this extra service.

Saddles can be adjusted in height without using any tools, see ‘Quick Release’. Our saddles don’t come with a gel cover.

Dutch Biketours does not provide water bottles. We can also not guarantee that there are bottle holders on the bikes. You will always receive 1x pannier, so you can always store your water bottle in your pannier.

A tag-along bike is a good option for children between approx. 100 cm and 125 cm, as they can pedal themselves and on their own pace but don’t have to worry about other traffic.

Bike Breakdown Pass

Mile after wonderful mile of untroubled cycling is what we would wish our clients. However there is a minimal chance of breakdown along the way. If this thought is a nagging worry to you, a Bicycle Breakdown Assistance insurance policy may ease your mind. If you buy this insurance from our partner ANWB pechhulp in advance, their service is as follows. The costs are €4,- per bicycle per day. If your bike breaks down by the roadside an ANWB bicycle repair man will drive to you in his repair van and fix your bike so you can continue your tour. You won’t have to pay him repair costs. If you are cycling on your own bicycle you will be charged for any new spare parts your bike may require. If you are renting a bicycle through Dutch Bike Tours any new parts are at our expense. If it turns out the bicycle cannot be repaired on the spot, or if you can't continue cycling, the repairman can drop you off somewhere in his van. One companion plus bikes may join you in the van.

Bike Theft Insurance

Do you wish to insure your bike against theft? The cost is € 3,- per day per standard hybrid bicycle. For an electric bicycle, premium bike or racing bike: € 6,00 per day per bicycle. Please see the General Terms and Conditions for Bicycle Hire and Insurance.

If a rental bike gets stolen or damaged, we will hold the client responsible. If your insurance does not cover this event, you will have to pay the costs yourself.

b. If you did purchase Bicycle Theft Insurance from us, but you failed to lock the wheel lock and failed to produce the original wheel lock key and failed to produce an official theft report drawn up by the police, you will still be held fully accountable for the sum determined by us according to standard prices.

Article 9 Costs During the Rental Period

Any charges and taxes regarding the rental bicycle(s), such as fines and ferry tickets, are to be paid by you. You will also be required to pay all costs ensuing from the use of the bicycle(s) such as parking fees, maintenance and repairs.

This trip ends in a different place from where one begins. For that reason we offer a car transport service for those travelling to the Netherlands by car. Your own car will be driven by a driver from the start location to the end location of the trip. This way, at the end of the trip, you can immediately drive home without having to go back to the starting location by public transport to pick up the car.

We offer this car transport service in collaboration with our partner Easy Way. This service can be selected in the booking form.

The car will be delivered to the end location one day before you check out from the last hotel, between 08:00 and 16:00. If you prefer to receive the car on a different date, please mention this at the time of booking. The following conditions apply to this service: - You have to leave your car keys at the hotel reception where the journey begins. Any parking charges of the hotel must already be paid at the reception, so that the driver does not have to pay these costs. - The car must have a full tank. - The car must be at least third party insured. - Easy Way is not liable for damage, except for any clearly demonstrable direct damage, but with a maximum of € 10,000 per event. Easy Way is not liable for indirect damage. - Dutch Biketours and the relevant hotels are not responsible for damage. - We need to know the brand/model of car and the license plate. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number, also known as chassis number) of the car and the country of issue of the license place are also required if the car does not have a Dutch license plate.

If you choose the car transport service, you automatically agree to the above conditions.

If you do not have the vehicle data at hand at the time of booking, you can also pass this on to us at a later date.

Excellent experience and arrangements went very smoothly. Bikes were good and we enjoyed the route chosen especially through the Green Heart during the first 2 days. Interesting route over bridges and ferries and through beautiful countryside and historic towns

Loved the amazing expanse of cycleways throughout the bike tour .We would never cycle without a helmet at home but felt confident to do so due to the cycle paths being so safe. Didn’t get lost once thanks to the cycle app!

Nice views, ferry connections, bike delivery & pick up were easy. Hotel in Amsterdam was easy to use with the city bus. Every hotel offered great breakfast. Gr8, Harbor Hotel (Leonardo?) and Hotel Postillion were just too far from the small villages that we rode through and preferred to have time to visist. Willemstad hotel and Mondragon hotels offered great food, accommodation and above all else excellent locations!

The ride was very tiring for me as I am 75. It was, however, very enjoyable and rewarding. I always felt safe on the quiet country lanes and was very appreciative of the respect shown to cyclists by other vehicular traffic. It was so interesting to see the villages and historic towns along the way.

Beautiful scenery, lovely towns and places to visit, good balance was water front and in-land fields along the way, excellent bike paths in our route in Netherlands and Belgium, and very nice people.

What a beautiful trip. The organization was excellent as was the baggage transfer service. We really enojyed each town we had a layover in and the route instructions were great. Can't wait to book another trip in the future

We were a group of 6 from the US. We loved traveling through the rural farmland and biking through small villages and old cities. The few museums we visited were very interesting and informative about Dutch culture. We hit a bit of rain and wind but had very high spirits in spite of the weather - which we can't predict! We definitely want to come back and tour with some framily members who could not make this trip. We really appreciate DBT always responding promptly to our questions and assistance both prior to and during our trip. Great staff. Thank you all for organizing this trip for us!

This was the second time we did a trip with Dutch Bike Tours and it has been just as fun and enjoyable this time. The routes are so well explained and cycling in the Netherlands is so easy and beautiful. We were almost always near water and there is so much wildlife to see. The hotels were in good locations and very comfortable. We’re already planning a third trip!

A brilliant experience; who knew that there were so many perfect traffic free cycling routes!

We loved getting a chance to see Holland from a bike - you go through towns and see countryside that you'd never see otherwise. The route guides give you great flexibility for your day and the luggage transport service was fantastic! All of the fun and none of the logistics.

...We had a best holiday on the road of Holland. Bicycles was nearly new and everything fixed and equipped. Instructions are very clear and helpful. Hotels in good location with nice diners and breakfast. Luggage was delivered in time. Even weather was beautiful, except our last day (typhoon in Belgium)...

...I was very satisfied overall with the trip. I was very happy overall and would be likely to do another bike trip in the future...

...It was so smooth and well organised with the bags arriving at each hotel everyday and no trouble with any of the five bikes we hired for the trip, and would add that I wouldn't do a trip like this without hiring the GPS unit which had all the routes and hotels loaded. Brilliant holiday and a great way to see your country...

...As we expected, the bike tour itself was very nice, visiting many nice cities and going trough lovely scenery.  We very much enjoyed the bike trip...

...Probably lack of research on our side but did not realize that the general wind direction is from the SW and is usually quite strong. We did not have good luck with the weather which is just bad luck but knowing about the general windiness of Holland and usual wind direction would have had us considering taking the trip in the opposite direction. All accommodations were comfortable and friendly. This was our first bicycle tour and despite the weather we really enjoyed the experience and would like to do it again! Thank you so much for all your help and hope to book with you in the not to distant future. (Just not into the wind and rain everyday.) Holland is both beautiful, friendly and fun...

...I loved being in the country the most. Crossing the long bridges and dykes was so much fun. The Groen Hardt was wonderful...

...We have a wonderful time and your service was great, the breakfasts and hotels were wonderful...

...Our trip was such a great experience, we were able to see the country of the Netherlands at such a wonderful pace. It is superior to driving as you get to see such beautiful sites along the way. The tour was well organised and we were able to find our way easily from stay to stay. My Dutch family felt that they too would like to take such a tour through their own country as they followed the blog of our trip. I would recommend this tour to everyone, it really was fantastic...

...We loved every minute of our trip especially crossing that long 5 klm. bridge and the ferries, the ocean view and canals....thank you for a great trip...

...Very beautiful bike ride, amazing landcapes with lot of water. In Netherlands, everything is made for bikes. People are very nice, always ready to help, inform...

...Everyday we had different scenery. One day was better then the next...there was a lot of variety....beautiful cities, fields, canals, unique bridges to cross and ferries...

...A family bike tour is an experience like no other. Riding from Amsterdam to Bruges allowed us time to explore, reflect and laugh. By the end of the tour our 10 year old was able to lead, knowing how to read and identify the signs and we spent a lot of time riding in a group chatting as we ambled along fields and canals. Night time was a chance to explore some beautiful old towns and local delicacies...

...We have recently returned from our holiday and would like thank you, we had a fantastic time.  Our bags were transported efficiently, always delivered to the hotels prior to our arrival. We liked the other hotels selected, particularly the Bellevue in Dordrecht due to the fabulous river view. The GPS was essential for us and the directions taking us to the hotels each day much appreciated. The routes you had chosen took us through varied, beautiful scenery, we loved catching the ferries...

...Very sad to give up our bikes , we had a wonderful time . The way it was organised was faultless...

...We’re back after a wonderful trip. Thank you so much for setting up the bike ride. The Netherlands are so perfect for biking and the scenery, food, and the people were fantastic. The arrangements you made were just great. We’re back in the desert now and looking at the pictures we took and remembering what a beautiful time we had...

...Thank you for a wonderful holiday!...

...We love the country, the people are warm and helpful, And the route is fantastic. In our case we thought we should have started in Brugge and cycled to Amsterdam as we would have had the wind at our back in a couple of the days. Fabulous week !...

...I cycled as a solo female traveller from Amsterdam to Brugges in late August 2018. Dutch Bike Tours exceeded my expectations from beginning to end in terms of responsiveness, dependability, professionalism, service orientation, quality of hotel accommodations and meals (I took the half board), and the sheer beauty of the bike trails and sights or places of interest along the way. I highly recommend the GPS, which allowed me to fully enjoy the scenery rather than keep my eyes focused on paper maps, and the bike breakdown pass which I used once and was extremely well served by. I will definitely cycle with Dutch Bike Tours again and highly recommend the company. Don't hesitate to book your cycling trip with DBT and enjoy the good life by bike!!...

...Without a doubt the BEST week ever on a bike!...

...Beautiful scenery particularly during the first three days and into Bruges. Depending on the time of year Bruges to Amsterdam may have the wind at your back...

...It was wonderful trip through the netherlands countryside and old charming towns. I love that we could explore and bike at our own pace (also far cheaper than the guided tours). It was nice that all hotels seemed happy to see you (used to dealing with bikes, luggage, etc). DBT was always quick to respond to any issues/questions that i had before and during the trip. Hope to do another trip again in the future...

...We had a wonderful time. Route was excellent, hotels good and backup queries from Dutch bike staff timely and helpful. We became quite saddle sore with the Dutch bikes. Would prefer a more traditional bike next time...

...Perfect bicycle holiday. Every day had its charm - and surprise! Holland is a wonderful country for bicycles! Always save some time to also walk the streets! Even the smallest places will surprise you!...

...Great seeing the countryside & experience biking in the Netherlands & Belgium...

...We had a few questions about one of the bikes when we arrived, but received excellent support when we called in to your office (the front bag needed to be switched out). We chose to add the extra night in Woerden, and would recommend this for most riders vs. Amsterdam - Gouda all on day one. We will certainly recommend your company to others. Thank you...

...All hotels were perfect. The route from Papendrecht to Willemstad was beautiful. Great holiday. Everything was super...

...GPS was invaluable.Twice we experienced road closures due to road works and the GPS enabled us to re-route effectively. All hotels were of good quality. We would have liked some information about public toilets in Holland. We did not find public toilets on this trip...

...the accommodation and dinners included in the halfboard were fantastic...

...Thank you for routing through Kinderdijk. It was definitely a highlight...

...Travel through nice towns, picking your own places to stop and get a beverage or some food was very nice. We stopped at a small place in Sirjans and meet a very nice couple who owned the place. Roads good and very impressed with the bicycle paths in Netherlands. Quite a 'highway' system and wished we had something similar in the USA...

...Everything was well organized! The staff at all the hotels were helpful & friendly...

...My husband and I are back in New York following our cycling adventure fom Amsterdam to Bruges and I just wanted to thank you for a fabulous trip! Everything was well-organized and the bicycles and equipment were top quality. Your country is beautiful and the Dutch people that we met along the way were lovely - always friendly and helpful.  We're already talking about our next Dutch Bike Tours trip!...

...The accommodations were good, the routes were well planned. All in all it was very organized...

...We had a great experience! We have already referred friends who have heard of our time biking in The Netherlands. We enjoyed the comfort of the Dutch bikes...

...This was our first cycling trip in Holland so the whole experience was new and interesting. We loved the dedicated bike routes and pretty countryside despite the continual rain and cold weather! We were very pleased with the bikes and found them comfortable and easy to ride...

...Now we are going back home and missing already the incredible daily cycling days we had. We just loved it all, the routes, the bikes, the places, organization, maps, tips and all locations we stayed. We thank you very much for such incredible experience you provided to us...

...We had a great time, and particularly enjoyed the routes chosen and the quality of the bikes...

Equipment very good condition. Accommodation generally very good except second last night (bathroom in cupboard and limited opportunity to visit to town in evening). Meals all excellent with third last evening the BEST (excellent presentation, meal and detail of services) Experience was excellent and would recommend your Company to anyone wanting to bike tour in Europe and would use your company again - service was excellent .

...The hotels were anywhere from good to outstanding.  Even the less expensive hotels had their attractions (e.g., the hotel in Vlissingen had a wonderful dining room and a swimming pool.) All the hotels varied a great deal and we enjoyed staying in each one. Well done....

...We loved the GPS which was indispensable for the trip! We loved the hotels but thought the hotel in Dordrecht was too far from the city center. We appreciate that our luggage was always delivered on time and was often early. Thanks for a fun adventure!...

...“we finished our cycling tour and we are  really enthusiastic about the experience. Hotels were excellent; the one in  Schuddebeurs was an old country inn surrounded by nature in this little village on the path; in Willemstad we were right on the marina. Even the dinners were excellent. In addition, the landscape has helped a lot, the Netherlands is extremely nice bike, we have come almost exclusively bike paths and we loved every single ride. Amsterdam is interesting and Bruges is very beautiful .. I would leave immediately again , of course! Thanks for everything, Francesca, also have read with patience this my email. Keep it up, because it still travel by bicycle is still the best way to travel!....

....We have had a fantastic time cycling from Amsterdam to Bruges. lovely route, great Accomodation and reliable bikes. the GPS was extremely useful especially to find the hotels. this is our 3rd successive trip with your company and we have never been disappointed....

....We had a very enjoyable time in Holland. Unfortunately, we chose a week when the weather was very poor. 4 of the 6 days were wet and windy. The hotels you have chosen were mostly satisfactory. The GPS worked well and the routes you chose were excellent. The cycle paths in Holland are superb. The Dutch people we met were all friendly and helpful and their spoken English is excellent. We would definitely consider another holiday with you, even a repeat of this one done in the opposite direction and in nicer weather....

....Overall, we enjoyed our trip very much. The bikes were of excellent quality, and the routes took us through scenic and interesting landscapes. People whom we met were friendly and helpful. We hope to take another trip in the near future....

....We have enjoyed the ride and our trip was well organized....

....We zijn aangenaam verrast door de grote landschap in België en Nederland....

....Overall we really enjoyed the trip and so I do not want to give any bad impressions. For example, the accommodations were terrific as were the meals. The routes chosen were excellent and gave us a chance to see a variety of things. We also met many nice people on the trip which was a real benefit as well....

....I would just like to say that we had a great time and would definitely recommend and use Dutch Bike Tours again for cycling in Holland. Virtually all the accommodations were of acceptable quality although there was some variation in standards amongst all the venues with some being newer, larger and more convenient than others. The general route was enjoyable and gave us a good appreciation of the regional difference through this part of the country....

...We had a very enjoyable trip in your beautiful country. The innkeepers were all welcoming and helpful with the bikes, and the bikes performed very well. There was one particularly challenging day when the wind was over 40 mph - it seemed like we rode three times the distance....

...Thank you for a wonderful trip.  All of the hotels met our expectations.  The bikes all fit and worked out well.  Your handbook of materials was complete and superb...

We successfully finished our ride yesterday after a wonderful six days.  We have many happy memories and are excited to share our stories and pictures with our friends back home in Canada

...I wish it hadn’t rained so hard on the Wednesday but that is always the risk you take with an outdoor activity like cycling. I found the routes easy to follow but did get lost briefly a couple of times (once when the path was being repaired and was blocked and the other when I missed the turn). The hotels were great and the food was of high quality. I will recommend the experience to other riders. The only suggestion I have is that it would be good to have a shorter option for each of the sectors, if possible, when the weather in a sector was really bad. Not sure how practical that would be. Again, thanks very much...
