If you are like us, you may be surprised to learn that the 2016 Dodge Journey is still on sale. Other than an admittedly thorough refresh in 2011, under its skin the Journey is pretty much the same as it was when the three-row crossover debuted in 2009. During that time, the Journey's rivals have all undergone complete redesigns to remain competitive, while the Journey watches time pass from the sidelines.

Is it a wagon or a crossover? The 2016 Dodge Journey blurs the boundaries.

To its credit, the Journey does still have some positive attributes. Its suspension provides a smooth ride even over the roughest road surfaces, and that, in combination with supportive seats and a quiet interior, makes the Journey an ideal companion on long road trips. Pricing is competitive, and if you need to take on more than five passengers, the Journey is one of just a few vehicles in its price range to offer a third row of seating or an optional V6 engine.

Time has not been kind to the Journey, however. In most other aspects, it is woefully outclassed by nearly everything in the segment. Both available engines are undesirable in their own way. The base four-cylinder is unexceptional and paired with a four-speed automatic that was starting to show its age when the Journey was first released. At least you can spring for the 283-horsepower V6, which delivers smooth and reasonably swift acceleration. Either way, the Journey drives straight ahead just fine, but trundles through corners clumsily and with a considerable amount of body roll.

If you need a vehicle with three rows, you may want to consider the 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan . This minivan costs roughly the same as the Journey and offers greater functionality, with plenty of rear cargo space and enough room in the third row to comfortably seat a couple adults. If you're set on a crossover SUV, our top pick for a similarly sized crossover with three rows of seating would be the 2016 Kia Sorento . It's more expensive, but we think its up-to-date design and technology features are worth the extra expense. And if you don't absolutely need a third row, just about any small crossover will give you similar seating comfort and cargo space but with superior fuel economy and refinement.

Yes, the Dodge Journey is still around. But 2016 might be the time to finally stop believin' .

Performance & mpg

By default, the 2016 Dodge Journey SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway), a decidedly subpar rating for a four-cylinder crossover.

Optional on the SE, SXT, Crossroad and Crossroad Plus but standard on the R/T is a 3.6-liter V6. It's good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft and is matched to a six-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard (except on the SE, which cannot be ordered in a FWD/V6 configuration) and all-wheel drive is optional. We recorded a 7.8-second 0-60-mph time in a front-drive, V6-equipped Journey, which is a sluggish showing given this engine's output ratings; still, the V6 gives you plenty of punch in most situations. EPA estimated fuel economy for the V6 is 19 mpg combined (17/25) with front-wheel drive and 19 mpg combined (16/24) with all-wheel drive.

Every 2016 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors are available as an option on the Crossroad Plus and R/T. Features such as blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning are not available, however.

In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this class.

In the most recent government crash tests available, the Journey received four out of five stars for frontal-impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests. Its seat and head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. In the agency's small-overlap frontal-offset impact test, however, the Journey received the lowest rating of "Poor."

The 2016 Dodge Journey has two personalities, depending on which engine you choose. The four-cylinder engine is noisy and really doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving with any sense of urgency, especially when loaded up with passengers. The outdated four-speed automatic transmission that comes with this engine does the Journey no favors in the fuel economy department, either. Accordingly, we'd avoid the four-cylinder entirely and step up to the 3.6-liter V6, which feels potent in any situation. Unfortunately, the six-speed automatic transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift is needed.

When equipped with the optional V6, the 2016 Journey is pretty swift for what it is.

Around town, the Journey provides a smooth ride. However, the steering is on the slow side, and you might find yourself having to make more hand movements than you would otherwise prefer. When driven harder through turns, the Journey's body leans noticeably. The Journey feels heavier than other compact SUVs and solid on the open highway, even over rough surfaces, but it doesn't inspire much confidence around corners.

Though Dodge seldom has enjoyed a reputation for high-quality interiors, the 2016 Journey does boast pleasing materials and textures throughout the cabin and solid-looking assembly. The gauges and dashboard have a functional and contemporary design that wouldn't be out of place in any number of higher-priced vehicles.

The available Uconnect 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment interface is one of the best in the business. You won't find a system that's more straightforward to use or more pleasing to the eye, with large, readable typefaces and icons and sensible menus.

Families will appreciate the selection of clever storage places squirreled throughout the Journey's cabin, particularly the cubby holes in the floor. There's a fair amount of legroom behind the front seats, and the integrated child booster seats are a nice bonus. Also helping the family-oriented mission is the Journey's available third-row seat, which is bundled with a separate rear air-conditioner. This seat is far from adult-friendly, but it's handy if you need to shuttle a couple extra kids to soccer practice.

Lower all the seats and the Journey coughs up 67.6 cubic feet of total cargo capacity, which is about what you'll get from the best two-row compact crossovers.

2016 Dodge Journey models

The 2016 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in five trim levels: base SE, SXT, Crossroad, Crossroad Plus and R/T.

The SE comes standard with 17-inch steel wheels, tinted rear glass, roof rails, dual exhaust tips (V6 models only), heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat, a 4.3-inch touchscreen and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

Optional for the SE is the Flexible Seating package, which adds a 50/50-split third row and tri-zone manual climate control.

Moving up to the SXT adds 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, a unique front fascia, LED taillights, body-colored exterior mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control for front seat passengers, floor mats and the Flexible Seating package.

Moving up to the Crossroad gets you 19-inch wheels, gloss black and chrome exterior trim, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, satellite radio and a cargo net.

The Crossroad Plus trim expands upon the Crossroad's feature content by adding tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery with cloth inserts, a six-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), a fold-flat front passenger seat with hidden storage bin, an 8.4-inch touchscreen, an in-dash DVD player and an SD card slot.

The 2016 Journey's optional 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system is one of the best you'll find at this price.

The R/T adds a V6 engine, remote engine start, monochrome exterior treatment, unique 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips, a sport-tuned suspension and steering wheel calibration, automatic headlights, perforated leather upholstery with red stitching, heated front seats, a premium audio system and a 115-volt power outlet.

Many of the features on the upper trim levels are available on lower trims via option packages. Other available features (depending on trim) include the Blacktop package (gloss black 19-inch wheels, grille and exterior trim), a sunroof, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, integrated second-row child booster seats, a rear seat entertainment system and a navigation system (paired with the 8.4-inch touchscreen).

How to test your Journey‘s battery, step by step

There are two ways to test the charging system: A - Check the battery indicator (not all batteries have one) B - Use a regular multimeter

A. How to check the battery indicator of your Journey

Some batteries have a colored indicator that shows you if they have enough power. Like this, if you look closely at the element highlighted in the picture, you can see that if its color is green, that means that the battery charge level is correct, and if it is red, it is not properly charged.

If your battery does not have this function, you should keep on reading to see in what other way you can check its status.

B. How to use a multimeter to check the status of your Journey‘s battery

• Get the car ready: To check the voltage of the battery, the engine of your Journeymust always be turned off. If the engine is on, you should turn it off and let it rest for at least 5 minutes so that its electric charge stabilizes. In both cases, you should turn the headlamps on for 30 seconds and then turn them off. This will get rid of small voltages which may produce wrong readings.
• Get the multimeter ready: To adjust the multimeter you must turn the selector up to the option that reads 20 V. In that way, it will be placed in the measurement scope you need.
• Measure your Journey‘s battery while the engine is off: After you turn the multimeter on, connect the red probe to the positive terminal (+) of the battery, which is usually marked in red color too, and then connect the black probe to the negative terminal (-). If these terminals are dirty, you should scratch them softly with the tip of the multimeter until metal and metal can touch. The multimeter will display the “available voltage” of the battery. If the battery is in a good state, the multimeter should show a reading between 12 and 13 volts .
• Measure the starting voltage of your Journey: With the tips of the multimeter in the same position, and without breaking contact, we must turn the engine on and check how much the voltage drops when the engine starts. In other words, when we twist the ignition key. For this step, someone else should help you out. The multimeter should show a reading higher than 9 V, and it will usually be between 9 and 11 volts .
• Check the alternator of your Journey
• With the tips of the multimeter in the same position and with the engine on, the multimeter should show a reading between 13.2 and 14.8 volts.
• Now we must turn on all the electrical accessories of the car: lights, air conditioner, defogger, etc. The multimeter should still be between the aforementioned range.
• The next test is to accelerate until the engine is at 3,000 RPM without turning the electrical accessories off. The multimeter should still show a reading between the aforementioned ranged.
• Lastly, accelerate and turn all the electrical accessories off. The multimeter should still show the same reading.

Measurements conclusions of your

If during this measurement process the voltage went up outside the mentioned range, the voltage regulator must be damaged.

If this increment was below the range, the alternator is probably damaged.

To sum it up: What should you measure to check the charging system of your Journey?

What kind of battery should you buy if it malfunctions.

Batteries cannot be repaired, so if these measurements were different than the recommended ones, you should buy a new one.

You should take into account the electrical characteristics stated in the owner's manual . If you read your manual, you will be able to see which capacity and power your Journeyneeds to start. If there is an emergency, you should buy the same battery your car already had. Afterward, when you have time, you can check which battery is required according to your car’s manufacturer.

⚠️ You should always buy batteries that were manufactured no more than 6 months ago , because they work with chemical processes, and there will always be internal wear with time which will decrease its lifespan. You can check the fabrication date on the battery tag.

Recommendation for liquid batteries: Nowadays, most of the batteries are sealed and do not require any maintenance, but if the battery of your Journey includes filler caps, you should check its liquid level and, if it is low, add liquid up until the indicated level. In this case, you should let the battery rest for 10 minutes and then turn the engine on for 5 minutes, turn it off and check again.

How does the charging system of your Journey work?

The charging system provides energy to the whole car, and it is composed of:

The alternator

The voltage regulator

The battery

The alternator creates electricity. This cylindric item transforms mechanical energy into electrical energy. Thanks to the accessory belt, also called Poli-V, it receives the mechanical movement of the engine that will be transformed into electrical energy.

The voltage regulator is in charge of regulating and stabilizing the voltage created by the alternator while taking into account that the higher the rotational speed is, the higher the voltage created by the alternator will be. This device is a small electrical module that is inside the alternator itself.

The battery is where the generated electrical energy is stored to be used when the engine is off or when the required electricity levels are very high, for example, when we turn the car on.

The electrical system of a car is measured in volts (V), just like in homes, but, unlike these, the voltage used in batteries only has 12 V of continuous current, which makes it safer to handle. In other words, there is no risk of getting shocked if we touch the terminals of the battery.

What's New for 2020?

Dodge cuts down the number of available trims on the Journey from three to just two for 2020: the SE Value and the Crossroad. The other notable cuts are the absence of all-wheel drive and the optional V-6 engine that were paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. The only powertrain available is now the antiquated 172-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder that is paired to a four-speed automatic and front-wheel drive. Buyers can look forward to the addition of standard rear park assist to all models as well as a standard sunroof for the Crossroad trim level. Dodge also streamlines the option-picking process with the introduction of the Popular Equipment Group which bundles many features together, depending on trim level. In the SE Value trim, the package gives you a six-way power-adjustable driver's seat, Uconnect with Voice Command and Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, three-zone climate control, security alarm, and a leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group adds a universal garage door opener, remote start, heated front seats and steering wheel, navigation, and a six-speaker sound system with a subwoofer. Dodge has announced that the Journey will finally come to an end after the 2020 model year.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2020 Dodge Journey starts at $25,170 and goes up to $30,090 depending on the trim and options.

With the absence of the V-6 and all-wheel drive for 2020, the rental-fleet-inspired SE Value version is our pick from the Journey lineup. With minimal options to choose from and minimal value added from the Popular Equipment Group at this level, we'd skip everything and stick with the bare-bones Journey.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Journey SE and Crossroad trims come with an underpowered four-cylinder engine that's best avoided—except you can't, since the V-6 is no longer offered. The 172-hp engine is woefully underpowered and the four-speed automatic transmission that's reluctant to downshift further dulls its real-world performance.

There are not many three-row crossovers that are entertaining to drive, so their ride and handling are graded on a curve. Even so, the Journey's ponderous handling and unresponsive transmission leave it far from getting a good rating from us. It wallows in corners with lots of body roll and imprecise steering. The benefit of this softness, however, is a comfortable ride on the freeway.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The four-cylinder engine has the worst EPA ratings among competitors with similar powertrains, with 19 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. By comparison, the 2019 Honda CR-V is rated at 26 city and 32 mpg on the highway, while the 2019 Toyota C-HR is rated at 27/31.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Journey's interior is far from upscale, but its simple controls are user-friendly. Getting anyone to fit in the third row—even children—requires those in the second row to compromise their legroom. Cheap-feeling bits such as a plasticky shifter and hollow-sounding interior door-trim panels are especially egregious on the priciest version. Several luxury features including a power-adjustable passenger seat, cooled seats, and heated rear seats are notable in their absence from the options list.

Practicality is one of the few areas where the Journey shines: its interior is easily configurable and it has tons of cubby storage for odds and ends, even if its total cargo capacity isn't as large as some competitors. You can fold down the 50/50-split third row and the 60/40-split second row to expand the available cargo space, although the Journey offers the least amount of total cargo space of the vehicles in this class. In addition to the expected compartments in and around the console, there's also a generously sized bin under the front-passenger seat cushion, as well as two large underfloor compartments in the second row.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although every model features an easy-to-use touchscreen, the system has fewer features than many other Dodge products. Likewise, the larger screen is responsive, but we wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability were offered here. There's also only a single USB port up front—not great for the device-happy spawn likely to inhabit the back seats.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

The Journey's lackluster safety report card reveals that it's not the best choice when it comes to sheltering your precious onboard cargo. Its crash-test results are not great, and—what's worse—it offers none of the advanced driver-assistance technology that is expected in other family haulers. The only available safety feature is rear parking sensors.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Dodge's warranty coverage is average, and Journey buyers won't enjoy complimentary scheduled maintenance.
