Jumbomax Ultralite Review – How Good Are These Grips?

There are a lot of performance nuances in the game of golf.

Basically, to be any good, you have to make sure all the stars align, so to speak. You have to make sure you have the right shaft for your swing. You have to make sure you are using the right types of balls with the right types of compression. And perhaps above all else, you have to make sure that you are swinging comfortably.

Choosing the right golf club grip goes a long way to ensuring your swing comfort – or disrupting it. In the following review, we will be taking a look at a very popular grip choice and discussing its merit.

Jumbomax Ultralite Overview

As the name implies, the Jumbomax Ultralite grips sport an oversized profile. They are advertised as having a mid-firm feel but I would actually say they are a bit on the soft side. The Jumbomax Ultralite grips comes in standard jumbo (35g), extra small (43g), small (48g), medium (47g), large (48g) and extra large (50g).

The inner layer is made of a firmer material than the outer layer to improve control over the shaft. The outer layer features three different traction patterns: herringbone, hexagons and simple cross patterns.

Do They Really Work?

If you have larger hands and want to be able to command the shaft without gripping so hard, the Jumbomax Ultralite’s absolutely work. When I tested them I noticed that I didn’t need to grip the butt so tightly to get adequate control. This allowed me to swing more comfortably even though I tend to have overatcive hands.

What Pros Use Them?

The Jumbomax Ultralite grips have most fammously beenused by Bryson DeChambeau. In fact, he had Jumbomax Ultralite grips on his clubs when he won the 2020 U.S. Open.

Who Should Use Jumbomax Ultralite Grips?

I tested the Jumbomax Ultralite grips on all my clubs and in my opinion, they feel best on my woods. They also work really well if you have large hands. If you are in the market for new grips for your woods and want to avoid a jumbo grip that feels too spongey, the Jumbomax Ultralite grips would be an excellent choice.

Jumbomax Ultralite First Impressions

Before I actually tested these grips, I was afraid they were going to be too soft and mute all the feedback of my swing. But that was not the case.

Right away, I could feel that the Jumbomax Ultralite grip was not as doughy as some other jumbo grips I have used in the past.

Jumbomax Ultralite Price

The standard jumbo size (the size I tested for this review) is $15.99. You can choose a flat black finish or tri-color (black, blue and red). There’s also an extra large Bryson DeChambeau signature version that costs a dollar extra.

• The different grip patterns help you align your hands

• It can help straighten out your shot
• A bit pricey
• It can make your standard grips feel awkward

Jumbomax Ultralite Overall Performance

Perhaps the most important performance aspect I noticed during my testing was that these grips made the club feel more secure during my swing.

I felt that I had complete control over the shaft and club head which allowed me to swing with more confidence.

More importantly, it allowed me to swing more comfortably. And when I swing comfortably, my face angle tends to be better. So the Jumbomax Ultralite made my full swings more accurate.

It seemed that the Jumbomax Ultralite grips had an effect on my shot shape as well. I was hitting more baby draws or just straight bombs off the tee with these grips. My dirve distance also improved by a few yards, mostly thanks to the starighter shot shaping.

However, there were a couple of things I didn’t quite like about the Jumbomax Ultralite grips. For one thing, I don’t reallyprefer jumbo grips on my irons; but that’s just a personal preference and not really a universally detrimental performance aspect. Still, it’s worth noting since I can’t be the only one who prefers a firmer feel on their irons.

Secondly, since I wouldn’t use the Jumbomax Ultralite on my irons or wedges, the difference can be a bit jarring. When testing was over and I switched back to my normal grips, it felt like I was holding toothpicks. After the feel of the oversized Jumbomax Ultralite grips, everything else feels a bit awkward. Again, something to note especially if you aren’t planning on using the Jumbomax Ultralite grips on all your clubs.

Overall though, I really love how these grips performed with my driver, fairway woods and hybrids. They offer straighter shots and excellent club head control.

This is a firm-feeling shaft that offers a bit more club head awareness than the Jumbomax Ultralite. This would be a great fit for players looking to smooth out their swing since these are counter-balanced grips.

Jumbomax Jumboflat 17 Putter Grip

This would be a good choice for anyone who prefers an arm lock putter grip. It rests very comfortably against your forearm and has a very flat profile.

Jumbomax Zen Lite

The Jumbomax Zen Lite grips would be good for any player seeking maximum feedback. These are perhaps the firmest-feeling Jumbomax grips I’ve ever played and the results of your contact come through clear as a bell. The rubber outer layer also makes for very good grip.

Jumbomax Ultralite Value

The Jumbomax Ultralite grips are a bit on the pricey side but they are worth it if you are a serious golfer with above average-sized hands.

I saw performance improvements in key areas of my swing when using the Jumbomax Ultralite grips.

40-50% of hand strength is in the pinkie finger. If grip diameter is too large relative to size and strength of pinkie will change control and power (parametric acceleration) of the golf club. Lack of control by pinkie is likely to change the entire swing… thats a bad thing.

Explains why many top PGA golfers with large hands and fingers use(d) undersize grips. IMO, over size grips are another marketing gimmick.

Another video that shows there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to grip size, this time testing Bryson DeChambeau's JumboMax JMX UltraLite (BDC plays the XL/~50 gm): This video actually pushed me over the edge to order one to test. I know it's one test by one person, but that near 50% decrease in dispersion is enough to pique my interest. I already play midsize grips and wear an XL glove, so I'm going with the XL/50 gram version. I'm just not sure what club to put it on - driver, mid iron, short iron, wedge? Here's an older one with a few sizes of more traditional grips for those that missed it from TXG back in 2018:

I just saw the video also. Interesting that using Jumbo grip makes you hit higher on club face. Scientifically it doesn’t register in my brain but it’s very interesting. On Monday I played 9 holes with a JumboMax Large grip on my old TM 2007 Burner (my standby driver). Out of 6 drives four were about average, and two were 15-20 yards longer than my usual drive, and they all went fairly straight. I'm playing tomorrow with a JumboMax Large grip on my TM M4 driver, and am anxious to see the results.

Well, those are some pretty interesting findings. If there was a quick and easy way for me to test, I'd probably give it a go, but my swing isn't nearly consistent enough anyway.

I switched my entire bag to JumboMax Str8 Tech (Arccos!) over the winter, after some range testing with a single club. I absolutely love them, the feel is great, they're comfortable, and my impact has been more square than it was before. I still have bad swings that slice a bit, but otherwise I'm hitting the ball dead straight much more consistently. And even those slices are better because the start line is straighter than before.

My experience with the JumboMax and my Taylor Made M4 driver was limited to 4 swings today. I need more swings to tune it in better as every drive went high and to the right. However I did play 18 with my old TM 2007 burner with the JumboMax large grip and had some good results - better than with the grip it replaced.

The JumboMax MX Zen Lite grips marry a traditional look and feel with their quintessential “jumbo” grips.  The potential for extra speed and comfort is a bonus that makes it a worthwhile experiment for those who haven’t tried it yet. 

Introduction

I have seen the benefits of golfers switching to JumboMax grips, but I have never tried them myself.  I certainly was excited as I’ve seen some friends and associates gain noticeably more club speed.  I’ve also seen JumboMax grips cause players to be more comfortable.  Now with JumboMax releasing their new MX Zen Lite grips I wanted to test them for myself.  

The JumboMax MX Zen Lite Grips are about as plain as they come when it comes to grips.  They are black with minimal white detailing at the butt of the grip that denotes the model and size.  A small white dash mark can be utilized as an alignment when installing the grips. The only color present is a neon green at the tip of the grip that reads “JMX Zen Lite.” 

The people that would like the visuals of this grip aren’t looking for frills, so the simple color scheme is not a bad thing.  In fact, when installed logo-side down, they become even simpler, with no branding visible at all.  The Zen Lite’s primary texture is repeating crosses going up and down the length of the grip. 

If you’re familiar with the “industry standard” type of grips like the Golf Pride Tour Velvet (review HERE ) or the Lamkin Crossline, you’ll know what these grips feel like .  The repeating crosses are the most textured surface of any JumboMax grip and feel remarkably similar to those two classic grip models. They are made of what they call their “Pro-preferred rubber surface.”  

While JumboMax’s website lists the Zen Lite as their “firmest feel” they are not uncomfortably firm .  At the same time though, they’re not going to be mistaken for soft grips either.  They can be described as middling in feel  and not particularly tacky.  One strange observation I had was that use this grip made the club feel shorter , despite not cutting down the club. 

With that being said, feel will be affected depending on the size of the grips.  While JumboMax grips are noticeably larger than standard grips, just how much larger can vary.  The JumboMax MX Zen Lite Grips comes in seven sizes : standard oversize, standard jumbo, x-small, small, medium, large, and x-large.

Performance

The Zen Lite model is an extremely balanced grip that held up equally well in sweat, rain, and dry conditions.  As someone who has the tendency to over-draw the golf ball with standard-sized grips, I found these to steer my shots straighter .  The extra mass in the grips was able to keep my hands from getting too active, which I loved.  

While ultimately your own feel and preference play a role in what grips feel and perform best for you, I will remind people of the importance of a good fitting .  While I’ll always recommend going to Club Champion, there is a short quiz on the JumboMax website to help suggest the appropriate size when looking to transition into JumboMax grips.  After answering those few questions I was recommended to go with their size small.

JumboMax often says in their marketing that their grips allow you to swing faster.  With this grip being slightly lighter than my preferred midsize grips, it stands to reason that if something is lighter, you’d be able to move it faster.  However, when Matt, Plugged In Golf’s editor, tried JumboMax Ultralite (review HERE ) he didn’t see speed increases.  

Like Matt, unfortunately, I didn’t see any speed increases either.  However, when trying the same grips, some of my friends did. I had a handful of friends try the grips on the same driver and found a few of them did gain 2-4 mph of clubhead speed in back-to-back tests.  I found it to worked best for those who struggled with fades or even worse, slices.  One said the grip gave him the confidence to “throw his hands” at the swing and not be afraid of a low left miss.  Any time you can increase your swing speed, especially without straining, it gives you the potential for more distance .

JumboMax MX Zen Lite Grips are the latest iteration in a series of grips trying to offer something different.  While changing the formula on size, these grips have kept a classic feel and performance that a majority of golfers enjoy.  While they don’t produce speed more for all, the prospect of a potential gain in speed makes these a worthwhile experiment.

Just wanted to post a quick review of these grips. I have always played some kind of cord mid-size grip and the last few years have been playing the NDMC PLUS 4 Midsize. Here recently I because of a swing change I swapped to the Jumbomax grips. Was unsure what size to get so went with the info on the website, large glove get the medium grips. This was spot on, the grips fit perfectly in my hand and are so comfortable. Don't feel like I have to squeeze the grip to keep the club from flying out of my hands. It is amazingly easy to control the clubface with these.

I read both theory's on the swing weight changes before purchasing as well. Some say it makes a huge difference while others say not so much because the grip is at the hinge-point. Either way I didn't care so I bought them, no regrets at all.

In an interview I saw with Dechambeau he said a very enlightening thing. "In no other sport is the handle of the "tool" so small. Not ping pong, badminton, baseball, softball, tennis, raquetball and so on".

I purchased one to try recently and really like them but can’t justify the cost for a full set. I’ve been playing oversized grips for past few months on most of my clubs now and I’ll never go back to standard grips. Despite what’s believed by most, it does not change swing/ball path at all (from my experience). It’s just a comfort thing and I feel like I’m not death gripping the club, which has lead to less hand/joint pain for me.

I agree they are a little more pricey than other grips but once you change they are well worth it. I am not a "big spender" by any means but one thing about golf. I can always find a way to justify what I buy or do!!!

And this "Despite what’s believed by most, it does not change swing/ball path at all" is definitely a true statement.

My playing partner tried one of these on his driver and, soon after, changed all of his clubs to this grip. Another friend said his playing partner swears by these grips. I'm a fan of the Golf Pride NDMC Midsize for drivers, fairways, and hybrids, so while I'm not ready to try these Jumbomax, they have piqued my interest.

For those worried about the change in swing weight, Jumbomax now offers it's "Ultralight Grip". It weighs 50 grams, the same as a standard grip at the size of the other Jumbomax Grips.

I didn't like the fact that you can't install them with compressed air; you have to use tape and solvent which is a non-starter for me.

I used air with no issues at all. Just mixed up a little joy /water soap solution to get it started and went on with no issues.

Installed mine with painters tape, a littel water and air. Went on quite easily

Don't know what air psi you were using but I had my compressor set at 60 psi.

Mine's set at 70psi, but no matter. The junction between the nozzle and the grip is never perfect, so I rarely get all the pressure I'm supposed to get. I couldn't use the puregrips coupling device, which has a tighter seal, because the butt end of the grip was way too big.

Like I stated in my first post, doesn't matter to me. Since I put these on there have been multiple guys at the club swing them and not one person has mentioned anything about the swing weight feeling off. Two people have actually ordered a set already. I tend to agree with the theory that the swing weight isn't affected that much because the grip is at the hinge-point.

Give them a try, you won't regret it !!!!

I play these with xl on the wedges, medium on irons, and small on woods. XL on wedges to choke down, and my wood shaft diameter stretches a small close to a medium.

I’d recommend MOI matching if you use these instead of chasing swing weights. Test a MOI that works and build woods and irons to their own MOI. Then all clubs will take the same effort to swing and you won’t get caught up in guessing on swing weight.

I moved from Winn Excels to the CP2 Jumbo when the former was discontinued. Excellent grips and the weight balance isn't thrown off much.

I put a set of jumbomax wraps (solid black grips) in size XL on a set of irons exactly one year ago. I couldn't imagine using a more conventional size grip at this point. With that said I'm a big guy and I've always used jumbo grips, lamkin or Winn Excel.

The extra large jumbomax is easily twice that size, and I benefit because I'm able to hold the club lighter I'm certain. But I'm also now using a single plane swing, Kirk Junges Settup 4 impact, and need to grip the club more in the palm rather than the fingers. In this regard the jumbomax XL grip has been a lifesaver.

I'm getting ready to order another set just to test out on some other irons, ultralight vs tour the question. The ultralight is intriguing and I may give that a go just to see if I can tell a difference in feel between the regular and the ultralight regarding swing weight.

If you go the Ultralight route let us know. I almost ordered those over the ones I did, I am completely happy with mine though.

I just placed an order for a complete set of the UltraLite's in a medium. I've never used JumboMax before, but their return policy (install one, try it out, and if you don't like it, send the complete set back for a full refund sans shipping charges) is too good to pass up. I selected two-day shipping, so I'm hoping to have them by Saturday so I can try them out this weekend.

I'll post a report once I receive them and try them out.

I bought these to put on my speedswing sticks, they are a little slick so we'll see how it goes. I don't wear a glove when I play golf but may have to with these. Hate to send one of the speedsticks through my neighbors window:

Ugh... evidently, the shipping methods available from JumboMax do not include Saturday delivery, which means my grips won't be delivered until Monday. I'll get them installed Tuesday and try to take them out Wednesday for a test.

That wrap, black, is what I have. Not slick in the slightest, after you use it a bit I am sure you will agree.

These just arrived. They feel great. I have been playing Winn Dri-Tac and these Jumbo's feel nearly identical. I can't wait to get these on my clubs and try them out. I had planned on getting one of these put on my current set so I could try it out today, but I got an email from PXG letting me know my new clubs have been completed and will be delivered Thursday, so I'm going to wait until then to get one of these installed. A report will follow.

Really anxious to here your feedback on these. I love mine for sure.

They feel just like my current Winn Dri-Tac's. They are very tacky on the surface and I don't anticipate any problems using them in the heat and humidity here in Southeast Texas.

That’s what I like to hear. I play in South Central Ky and humidity is awful for the summer and I tend to wear 2 gloves from time to time to keep from slipping. These sound like a good fit for me. Wondering how well they’ll hold up.

I'm not a huge fan of oversized grips, but I love the surface texture. I have a set of irons with the smallest grips they offer, standard oversize. No matter how hot and humid it is down here in Texas, the surface never gets slippery. They also aren't hard as a rock in the winter. I like the shape of the MCC Plus 4's a little better, but the overall texture of the JumboMax's are awesome.

*****REVIEW - JumboMax UltraLites*****

So, I finally had the opportunity to hit the range today as well as play a few holes after work today. Overall, **I'm very impressed with these grips (Jumbo Ultralites) and am very happy I purchased them.** Simply put, they just feel better. The clubs feel more secure in my hands and the tackiness of these grips is excellent; they feel just like the Winn DriTac grips I have on my other clubs.

It did take a few swings for me to get acclimated to the larger grips, but once I did, my swing felt easier and smoother despite being at the same speed and tempo. I ordered the medium size and despite being very large (comparatively), they fit without any issues into my 14-way golf bag and were easy to take in and out.

The one issue I did have was with my driver. I typically hit a very straight drive without much, if any, lateral movement. However, with this grip on my driver, I hit a dead pull with every swing. I typically use a stronger than average grip, though I've never had an issue with my old midsize grips. I also didn't change my grip while swinging my irons and I didn't have an issue. I'm going to have to experiment with weakening my grip with my driver to see if that fixes it. I'm sure I just need some more range time to figure out what I need to do to work this issue out.

I highly recommend these grips to anyone, though.

At JumboMax, we’re not out to popularize any particular grip size. We’re firmly anti-trend. What we stand for as a company is helping golfers play better with golf grips that fit their hand in an ergonomically correct way.

STEP 1: START WITH GLOVE SIZE

STEP 2: CONSIDER THESE TIPS

General tips.

• In between sizes? Size up if you hit a draw or struggle with a snap hook. Size down if you hit a fade or struggle with a slice.
• Golfers with long fingers and large hands can benefit from a Large or XL grip. 
• Golfers with arthritis or other gripping issues can also benefit from a Large or XL grip.

A FEW TIPS FOR MEN

• Wear a medium-large or large glove? You’ll find our Medium Grip to be a comfortable fit.
• Wear a medium glove? Try our Small or XS grip.
• Wear a Small or Medium-Cadet glove? Try our Standard Oversize or Xtra-Small size.

A TIP FOR WOMEN

• Most women play best with our Standard Jumbo size up to our Medium grip.

LIKE SMALLER GRIPS?

• Standard and Standard Oversize (+1/16) are our newest grip sizes. They are designed for golfers who are comfortable with a standard mid-size or oversized grip.
• Golfers who chose our Standard or Standard Oversize grips are generally looking a grip that allows them to hold the grip primarily in their fingers.
