Canal Cruises in Paris: A Boat Ride on the Canal Saint Martin

Last updated: February 20, 2019 - Written by Jessica Norah 28 Comments

On our last visit to Paris we took a boat cruise on the Canal Saint Martin. While a good percentage of Paris visitors take a boat cruise on the famous Seine River, very few venture onto Paris’ canals. In fact, I think most people don’t happen to know that Paris has canals, let alone that there is over 80 miles of canals that form the Paris canal network, which also includes the interconnected Canal de L ‘Ourcq and Canal Saint-Denis.

This canal network was commissioned by Napoleon I in the early 1800’s to provide Parisians with clean drinking water and provide an alternative waterway for industrial boat traffic other than the Seine. Today there is little industrial boat traffic on the Canal Saint Martin, but the city has recently invested millions of euros in developing the areas around the canal to allow for boat cruises, biking, and scenic walkways.

If you’ve already done a boat cruise on the Seine River , you might want to think about doing a cruise on one of Paris’ canals. We’ll tell you how to plan your own cruise down the Canal Saint Martin, share our tips, and tell you about our own experience doing a boat cruise on the Canal Saint Martin with Canauxrama.

Planning Your Cruise of the Canal Saint Martin

The first decision is to choose a cruise company. There are two main companies that regularly run cruises on the Canal Saint Martin, these are Canauxrama and Paris Canal . We’ll give you some information on both companies so you can choose the one that best fits your schedule, budget, and location in Paris.

Phone: +33 01 42 40 96 97

Fax: +33 01 42 40 77 30

**Note: The office for both companies are located almost next to each other.

When are the Cruises?

Canauxrama currently offers Canal Saint-Martin cruises year-round while Paris Canal offers them from about March to November. Both provide morning and afternoon cruises, see websites for specific cruise times and dates.

Cruise Departure Points?

Note that all cruises see most of the same sights and that for both companies you’ll start at one of the two locations and end at the other. It is not a round-trip cruise.

Bassin de la Villette 13, Quai de la Loire, Paris 19th arrondissement (Metro: Jaurès) Near Place Stalingrad.

Port de L’Arsenal, across from 50 Boulevard de la Bastille, Paris 12th arrondissement (Metro: Bastille) Near Place de la Bastille.

Quai Anatole France, in front of the Musée d’Orsay, PARIS 7th arrondissement (Metro: Solférino or RER C train station: Musée d’Orsay).

Porte de Pantin, near the southern entrance to the Parc de la Villette in front of the red Information/Ticket Center also know as the “Folies des Visites du Parc”, 19th arrondissement (Metro: Porte de Pantin).

Cost of Canal Saint Martin Cruise?

Adults are 16 euros, children age 4-11 are 8.5 euros, and children under 4 are granted free admission. Students and seniors with valid ID are 12 euros (discount not valid on weekends or public holidays). Special group pricing for groups of 20 or more people.

Adults are 19 euros, children (age 4-11) are 12 euros, young adults (age 12-25) are 16 euros, and those over 60 years of age are 16 euros. Paris Canal also offers a family deal where 2 adults with 2 children under age 18 can buy a family ticket for 49 euros. Special group pricing for groups of 20 or more people. We could not locate a price for children under the age of 4 so assume they get free admission.

Length of Canal Saint-Martin Cruise?

The standard Canal Saint-Martin cruise is 2.5 hours.

The standard Canal Saint-Martin cruise is 2.5 hours. Note that a short amount of this time is actually cruising the Seine as your cruise will either begin or end near the Musée d’Orsay. However, this is not a replacement for an hour-long Seine cruise as much of the time and focus is on the Canal Saint Martin.

How to Make Reservations?

Reservations for both companies can be made online or stopping by their office. It is recommended that you make reservations in advance for your cruise.

Narration aboard the Boat Cruises?

Narration is provided by live guides in both French and English. Typed summaries on the Saint-Martin Canal cruise are also available in the following languages: German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Portuguese, Chinese, and Dutch.

Narration is provided by live guides in both French and English.

Food and drinks on the Cruise?

On the standard cruises, there are snacks and drinks available for purchase; however, note that the offerings are not always consistent and meals are not served. It is best to plan to eat before or after the cruise. There are also toilets available on all boats by both companies.

Canauxrama boats do stop at restaurants on their one-day cruises and sometimes offer other cruises that include food.

Can I cruise the Canal de L ‘Ourcq and Canal Saint Denis as well?

Yes! Not only do both of these companies run cruises on the Canal Saint-Martin, they also have cruises on the Seine River, Canal de l”Ourcq, Canal Saint-Denis, and the Marne River (a river east of Paris that connects to the Seine and was the subject of a number of Impressionist paintings).

Why we chose Canauxrama?

For us, we chose Canauxrama because it was slightly less expensive for us than the Paris Canal cruise and the Port de L’Arsenal was the closest of available departure points. Also at the time, Canauxrama was offering discounts for tickets booked online.

Tips & Advice in Preparing for your Paris Saint-Martin Canal Cruise

• Make reservations in advance if possible. If you can get a flexible date ticket, then you can try to plan to go when the weather is nice.

• Make sure you know the time and departure point of your cruise and figure out where the departure point is beforehand and how much time it will take you to get there. If you have any questions about timing or location that are not answered by the websites, e-mail or call the company and ask for more information. Don’t take a chance at the missing the boat like we did!

• Unless the weather is really bad, the boats will take off rain or shine if there are enough cruisers, so dress appropriately as it can be quite cold on the boats (particularly in the mornings) and bring an umbrella or poncho if rain is expected. While all boats have covered and indoor seating, you’ll want to at least come out on deck to take a close-up look at some of the locks during the cruise.

• The cruises are fairly long at 2.5 hours so if you are traveling with kids (or adults with short attention spans) bring some things they can do quietly while sitting. Also note that there is not really food aboard so plan to eat before or after the cruise.

• Leave time before or after your cruise to explore the Canal St. Martin area in the 10th arrondissement and/or the Parc de Villette in the 19th as both are places that most visitors don’t explore. Many cruisers get of the boat and head to the next thing on their itinerary and regret not having time to spend more time in these areas. We spent most of a lovely morning and afternoon walking around the 10th and 12th arrondissements.

Our Experience doing a Boat Cruise down the Canal Saint Martin

Prior to leaving for our trip, I had purchased two ticket vouchers online for a Canauxrama St. Martin Canal cruise. We printed them off and they were valid for 1 year after purchase, giving us flexibility about when we actually used the tickets.

Once we got to Paris, we chose a day but unfortunately to a series of unfortunate events and not enough planning, we literally ended up missing the boat by about 10 minutes.

While initially I got quite upset, we ended up spending a lovely, but rainy, morning spent walking along the canal, exploring the neighborhood, and having a nice lunch at a little restaurant called Chez Marie-Louise. You can read more about that experience here .

After some debate, we decided to forgo other plans and come back two days later to do the cruise. We took the morning cruise out of the Port de L’Arsenal. It was rainy and there were about 20 other people who boarded the boat with us.

After leaving the Port de L’Arsenal, we navigated our way into an underground stone vault. This interesting vault is 2 kilometers long and lit by 37 lanterns. Sometimes you’ll see a light show or a projected film on the vault walls, but we did not experience this on our particular trip. Our pictures turned out terribly here.

Next you’ll come to your first lock, this one a double lock. The guides will explain how the locks work and you can ask additional questions if you want more details on the process. Here is a simple pictorial view of what happens.

Paris Canal Saint Martin boat cruise boat ride on Paris canals St. Martin canal Canauxrama Paris Canal

Over the 2.5 hour cruise, you’ll experience a total of four double locks and two swinging bridges. Each lock has its own name and history and this will be shared as you pass through each one.

One of the locks that stood out was the Ecluse des Morts which is named after a 4th to 5th century Merovingian necropolis. To expand on the death theme, the Montfaucon Gallows were built on a nearby hill and had the capacity to hang up to 60 Parisians at one time. The gallows were not destroyed until the French Revolution.

In addition to the locks and swinging bridges, you’ll also glide under a number of metal footbridges as you pass tree-lined streets, cafes, tiny parks, houseboats, and quirky boutiques. People often stand on the footbridges and look down to watch the boats pass by.

IMG_5163

The guides were friendly and the female guide said everything in both French and English. It was clear that she was a native French speaker and sometimes her English was a bit difficult to understand, but you are also given a printed sheet with much of the commentary so that even if you don’t catch everything the guide says, you can still follow along.

They were also happy to answer questions. While inside the boat, we had no problem hearing the narration, but one problem was that when we went to sit outside, we had a really difficult time hearing the guide at all. This was at least partly due to the fact they were keeping the outside door closed due to the rainy weather so it is likely much easier to hear when the door is left open.

As you move towards the Parc de la Villette, you’ll notice a bit of the remaining industrial buildings and it will look a lot less like the more touristy central Paris. Along the way, you’ll hear about the history of the Canal Saint-Martin, several famous buildings along the canal, and the old village of La Villette.

The guides will also share pop culture references along with the modern uses of the canals and the areas along the canal. For instance, the infamous man who stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre in 1911 lived in a small house along the Canal Saint-Martin.

For movie buffs, the Canal Saint-Martin was featured in the 1938 Hôtel du Nord, directed by Marcel Carné which serves as the inspiration for the names of the Canauxrama boats. More recently, you might have seen the canal featured in the 2001 movie Amélie where the character Amélie Poulain is seen skipping stones at the locks of the canal.

Paris Canal Saint Martin boat cruise boat ride on Paris canals St. Martin canal Canauxrama Paris Canal

Overall, we enjoyed a very leisurely and interesting cruise along the Canal Saint Martin. While many Paris attractions have you walking around and on the move, this was a nice slow relaxing float down the canal.

Now, I do want to note that the cruise is very slow moving as it takes a lot of time to navigate the locks and bridges along the path. I think a few passengers on the boat grew quite bored and disinterested after the first couple of locks as the process is pretty much the same each time. This is definitely not an hour long cruise along the Seine River where you are hit over the head with notable and world-famous sites at every angle.

There is nothing comparable to the Eiffel Tower , Louvre, or Notre-Dame along the Canal Saint-Martin so this is something to think about when considering this cruise. You’ll learn and experience the navigation of locks and swinging bridges, you’ll get to see less touristy areas of Paris, and you’ll learn some history of the area. If this does not sound appealing, don’t take this tour!

You can still experience the area, footbridges, and locks by exploring the area by foot or by bicycle. No matter how you do it, I definitely think the 10th arrondissement is an area that deserves to be explored. While we got to spend quite a bit of time in the Canal Saint Martin area on foot, we unfortunately did not have time to explore much of the Parc de Villette, but hope to do so on a return trip to Paris!

How will I get back? Is it too far to walk back? Thanks, Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, It depends where you are staying if you would walk about after the canal cruise. Which cruise you are planning to take and where does it end? If it is too far for you to walk back after the cruise, you will likely be within walking distance of a metro station and/or bus stop. Taxis and rideshare are also options. Best, Jessica

Very helpful post. We look forward to cruising the St. Martin Canal. Do you also have posts on the Marne cruises? Thanks

Hi Barbara, Glad this information was helpful for planning your St. Martin Canal cruise – I don’t have any posts about the Marne unfortunately as I have not done a cruise on it yet but the same companies offer some cruises of the Marne Canal/River I think. Best, Jessica

Do either of the canal tours allow small dogs (in carriers) on the boats?

May 6, 2017 at 1:47 am

Hi Neal, Yes, Canauxarama does allow small dogs (and other pets) in carriers aboard most of their Canal Saint Martin boat cruises subject to space. I do not know about Paris Canal or other companies that do canal cruises, but if you have a certain cruise in mind, I would give them a call or send an email to check. Enjoy your time in Paris! Great info! THX! I have done the Seine tour many times and look forward to doing a canal tour, which I hadn’t even realized existed, on my next trip to Paris in September. I also checked out the day trips offered by one of the tour operators you mentioned and will do one of these as well. I always like to do something new when I stay at a place I have previously visited, and I particularly enjoy excursions via boat. I have done similar excursions on visits to Amsterdam and highly recommend these as well. Travel safely, and have grand adventures– Donna

I never knew boat rides were available on the canal! I just got back from a trip to Paris in the fall and loved every minute there!

The canal rides are nice alternatives if you’ve already one the Seine boat cruises. Much slower and peaceful and less crowded.

How have I never heard of these canals?! That is shocking, so thanks for posting this. I can’t believe how affordable these cruises are. When I travel France I will have to check them out!

February 17, 2014 at 9:05 pm

I don’t think most visitors to Paris know about the canals or that they can tour them, but it is a great way to explore this area of Paris. We found that by combining a few hours of walking with the tour, we were able to really appreciate this area.

I used to live not too far from Canal St. Martin – off of rue Oberkampf actually. I loved going to the canal on a sunny day with a good book and a picnic lunch and just passing the day away. It’s certainly a less touristy part of town than others, but has its own particular charms. There are quite a few great cafes and bars, for example. Definitely a part of town worth checking out!

February 17, 2014 at 8:40 pm

Hi Amy, it seems like a cool area to live in Paris. We definitely enjoyed the several hours we spent wondering around the canal and the general area. We also discovered the nearby Parc des Buttes-Chaumont on our walk. Would love to spend more time in this area on future visits.

The evening went very well, the staff on board was great, the dj too and we have had a mild weather throughout the cruise ! The guests were delighted with their evening!

We and all our guests appreciated the kindness and the professionalism of the crew. The catering team has been available and assured diligent and pleasant service. The different bites and verrines have been greatly appreciated, and the passion fruit cake as well as the raspberry cake had a great success.

I highly recommend this boat trip, it was really nice to sail on this canal, discover the locks. The information given about the history of the city was excellent (and funny!). Thank you for this moment!

A cruise much more original and rich in history than the traditional cruise by river boats on the Seine. 2h30 of relaxation, locks, bridges crossing and other very unusual underground passages. Good atmosphere and comments of high quality.

Caroline B.

We had only positive feedback, the food was of good quality, the route (very little known by internationals, provincials and Parisians alike) aroused great interest.

Before arriving at the Parc de la Villette (Cité des Sciences, the Géode, the Cité de la musique, themed Gardens), you will cross the Bassin de la Villette, formerly a trading port and now redeveloped to form the setting for the Rotonde de la Villette and you will pass under the amazing Crimée drawbridge.

One of the best parts of exploring any city—but especially a city as iconic as Paris—is getting to finally go off the beaten path and see what the local areas are like.

The second I walked into the Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood, I knew I had found a total local gem—one of the most hipster, trendy Paris neighborhoods that had been hiding from me on multiple previous visits.

Naturally, I ended up spending a ton of time there as a result!

Located just northeast of the Marais , and north of Bastille , Canal St Martin Paris is one of the best hip Paris neighborhoods. It’s a quaint local area that I think everyone should check out when they visit Paris , especially because it’s so central you won’t even need to go out of your way to see it.

Today, I’ve decided to bring together all the best parts of Canal St. Martin in this handy neighborhood guide!

F AQs about Canal Saint-Martin

Is canal saint-martin worth visiting.

Canal Saint-Martin is absolutely worth visiting , especially for those who want to visit Paris and see the off the beaten track neighborhoods.

Canal Saint Martin is a much more local, trendy, and hipster Paris neighborhoods than many of the other neighborhoods you might find yourself in as a tourist to Paris, which makes it one of the great non touristy things to do in Paris.   Exploring the area allows you to see a side to the city that you may have never had access to otherwise , and makes your time in Paris feel all that much more authentic.

There are also tons of great restaurants in Canal Saint Martin Paris (which we’ll get to), so that’s an extra bonus for why you’d want to visit Canal Saint-Martin in Paris.

canal st martin paris buildings

What is Canal Saint-Martin known for?

Canal Saint-Martin is known for, well, the canal of course! The calm and pretty canal that defines the neighborhood is a great place to walk along, have a picnic, or just a nice view as you eat a meal on a canal-side terrace.

The area is also well known for some film settings : Amélie, for example, sets some of its whimsical scenes in Canal St Martin Paris.

Last but not least, Canal Saint-Martin is known for being a hipster and cool , more local part of Paris, making it one of the more unique things to do in Paris.

canal st martin paris corner

Is Canal Saint-Martin a good place to stay?

Yes, Canal Saint Martin Paris is one of the best Paris neighborhoods to stay in. For one thing, it’s relatively close to the train stations , so if you aren’t in Paris for very long you don’t have to spend too much time in transit.

Also, much like Bastille , it’s walkable to the Marais , but way cheaper.

The area itself is also super desirable, with lots of cute boutiques, bars and restaurants that aren’t nearly as packed with tourists .

It manages to be a nice combination of lively and not-too-overstimulating, due to its local charm. It’s also considered a relatively safe neighborhood because it’s so lively.

16 Best Non-Touristy Things To Do in Paris

9 fun things to do in canal st martin paris.

Canal Saint Martin Paris, unlike some of the more famous neighborhoods in Paris, is not necessarily full of “things to do”, but if you’re a regular reader of the blog you’ll know that that’s usually more appealing to me anyway!

I love exploring more off-the-beaten-track areas of a city. For me, that’s how you really get to see the true energy of the place.

Keeping with that spirit, I’ve collected all the best “things to do” in Canal St Martin Paris, but don’t be surprised that they’re very casual and in line with the spirit of the neighborhood.

canal st martin paris cruise

Many people will do a cruise along the Seine while in Paris, but why not switch it up a bit and do a Seine/Canal Saint-Martin combination cruise .

This is great if you’d prefer to have a less physically demanding activity than a walking tour. It’s also always a nice experience to get to see any city from the water—and Paris is no exception.

Being on a boat is pretty relaxing, and the guide will be able to tell you about all the things you’re passing.

This particular cruise is nice because you get to see Canal Saint-Martin and it goes past most of the major parts of the city via the Seine—best of both worlds!

canal st martin paris canal area Jardin Villemin

Jardin Villemin is a park in the Canal Saint-Martin area that’s totally overlooked by tourists, but incredibly beloved by locals.

As I’ve said before on this blog, I love walking through, or even sitting and enjoying, parks while traveling. I think it’s a great way to do something free, and usually not very touristy. It’s also a nice way to relax after a long day of walking.

This particular park is easily located to the rest of the Canal St. Martin area, right on the water.

canal st martin paris canal area picnic

If you want to skip a formal lunch, and indulge in a picnic full of yummy French deli snacks , Canal Saint-Martin is a great place to do that.

For me, the perfect French picnic has a few key components: a fancy cheese, a good baguette, some kind of cured meat, a deli item of sorts (olives, perhaps?), and something sweet. Oh, and we can’t forget the wine.

I recommend setting up camp either in the Jardin Villemin, or right along the canal! For the perfect upscale wines and cheeses, I recommend La Crèmerie , and for pastries or bread, just go around the block to Du Pain et des Idées .

If you want to go a bit more casual/budget-friendly, there’s also a Carrefour in the same area.

4. Stroll Quai de Valmy & Quai de Jemmapes to take in the canal

If you wanted to get a long walk in, you could walk the length of the canal! The entire canal is nearly 3 miles long, but you can just choose to walk whatever portion of it feels right for you.

This is a great way to see all the different types of neighborhoods that line the canal , and enjoy the calm that the canal brings!

Also, there are tons of shops and cafes that line the canal, so you can always stop and explore all the nice spots you see on your journey.

104 (Centquatre) keith haring exhibit

A bit further out from the more central parts of the canal areas, CENTQUATRE is a unique and exciting community art center in the 19th arrondissement. The enormous multi-purpose space is really a sight to be seen, as it’s home to various art spaces, event spaces, public spaces, and cafes.

The artists that have spaces here are invited to work at the site, so you’ll probably come across artists in the midst of creating their masterpieces!

The space celebrates all disciplines of art, and is a great activity for any age group. This could be a great option for anyone wanting a more contemporary museum option, but without wanting to commit to a full museum experience.

It’s open every day but Monday.

canal st martin paris Point Ephémère bar

In a similar vein to CENTQUATRE, Point Ephémère is another cultural center that allows artists to work on their projects—and it’s a little closer to the center of Canal Saint-Martin , meaning it may be slightly easier to visit. Set in a former art deco material warehouse, the space has an expansive outdoor area just next to the canal.

All kinds of disciplines inhabit the space, and the works of the artists are on display for the public in their exhibition space.

Not only that, but they also have concerts, events and bars onsite, so you can enjoy more traditional cultural events, if contemporary art isn’t your vibe. The graffiti-covered walls, bare concrete structures and glass roofs give it a serious Berlin vibe, which I’m not mad about at all! Make sure to check out the calendar to see what’s on!

During the summer, the evenings can get a bit crowded, but it can be worth it to enjoy an aperitif and meal on the sunny terrace.

canal st martin paris hotel du nord

The Hotel du Nord is another iconic movie location you can visit, this time for fans of the golden age of cinema.

The film Hotel du Nord is from 1938, and though most of the movie was filmed in a studio, the setting is Canal Saint Martin Paris, and the facade of the actual Hotel du Nord is a fun treat for fans and history lovers alike.

You can pop in for a meal or just a drink/coffee and enjoy their vintage looking interior, or opt to sit canal side on their lovely terrace.

canal st martin paris hotel and shopping

One of the things I was most struck by while exploring Canal Saint Martin Paris was how many cute shops I passed! Before visiting this neighborhood I was always told that the main shopping areas were the Marais and Saint-Germain, so after seeing what was hiding in the Canal St Martin Paris area I felt like I’d found a hidden gem!

The colorful facades of Antoine et Lili were the first things to catch my eye, and I definitely spent some time browsing the colorful and whimsical interior.

Centre Commercial is great for ethical and sustainable upscale fashion, and Artazart is a fantastic bookshop with titles mostly in French, but also a good selection of English.

Don’t miss Marché Couvert Saint-Martin , which was rebuilt in the 1800s, and has loads of stalls inside to browse.

And finally, for some vintage and second hand shops, check out Ding 2 Fring , Urban Vintage Paris , Machicadou , and Frivoli !

canal st martin paris small business

I love taking a walking tour to get to know a city better, and that’s even more true in more off the beaten track neighborhoods where you can often find a passionate local to show you around.

Here are two excellent options in Canal St. Martin that will have you feeling like you just a made a cool new Parisian friend while getting to experience the neighborhood and access a more authentic side to Paris:

This hidden gem food tour of Canal St. Martin with a group called No Diet Club is my kind of food tour! They promise no cheese and croissants—not that you shouldn’t eat cheese and croissants, but this tour is all about eating like the young, hip locals of the neighborhood! You’ll go to all of the cool spots of the neighborhood, and the group just has perfect vibes in their tour description, so I have no doubt it’ll be an excellent time.

If you’re looking for a more comprehensive tour of the neighborhood (and to kill two birds with one stone) this “Like a Local” private tour of Canal Saint-Martin and the Latin Quarter is a perfect choice. It’s actually via a company called WithLocals that I’ve used myself a few times. Their whole thing is offering only private tours with guides they’ve vetted as true, born-and-bred locals.

Best Time to Visit Paris & Weather by Month

As I’ve already mentioned, Canal Saint-Martin is an ideal place to base yourself during your visit to Paris because it is super central.

Not only is the 10th arrondissement the location of Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est, but this neighborhood is also very much walkable to The Marais and to Bastille , two of my other favorite neighborhoods in Paris . Even better, the hotels you’ll find in Canal St. Martin are significantly cheaper than those in The Marais, while being just a cute and cozy!

14 Great Things About Canal Saint-Martin Paris

1. canals tour + seine river cruise.

Canals Tour & Seine River Cruise

This is a wonderful way to experience both the canal itself and the quartier it flows through. As a bonus, you also get to cruise along the Seine River. It's a leisurely boat ride on the canals built by the two Napoleons, underneath Place de la Bastille, through The Arsenal, and out along the Seine.

We like the afternoon version of this cruise that starts off on Canal du Ourcq in the middle of Parc de la Villette in the 19th. We recommend you take Metro Line 5 to Porte de Pantin and walk through the parc . If you've timed it right you'll be able to stop for lunch at Café de la Musique .

It's a real pleasure to be able to sit back and watch this part of Paris pass by. You'll go through the former port of Bassin de la Villette, through all locks on the canal, and go underground to Place de la Bastille before finally emerging into the Seine and eventually docking near Musée d'Orsay. Two-and-a-half hours of pure relaxation. (The morning tour goes in the opposite direction.)

Hotel Fabric

On a quiet street near Boulevard Richard Lenoir is this homey, comfortable, yet thoroughly modern hotel. This former textile factory was only converted into a modern hotel a few years ago and everything still seems spanking new. It's a good location, near the Metro, and a great value for a comfortable sleep.

"An excellent location ," one traveler opined, "whether staying for business or pleasure; warm, friendly, efficient and helpful staff; beautiful ambience and decor. Will definitely be a first choice when returning to Paris." We ourselves give it one of our highest ratings, and it's our top choice in the quartier .

Our Rating — Superb • 31 rue de la Folie Mericourt • 11th Arrondissement

3. Flaneurs & Fishermen

Flaneurs & Fishermen

If you've ever seen the classic 2001 French film Amelie , you may recall the heroine, Amelie herself, skipping stones from an iron bridge that overlooks the canal. Like her, other Parisians love to relax along the canal's tree-shaded banks and you'll often see picnickers, poets, philosophers, and pêcheurs (fishermen) waterside. As a place to see and be seen Canal Saint-Martin is especially popular with the under-30 crowd. Despite its influx of flaneurs (strollers & pedestrians, like us), the canal remains charmingly calm.

As for the fishermen, we hesitate to guess what they might be catching!

Romantic Dinner Cruises In Paris

4. cheese and wine tasting in a paris cheese cellar.

Cheese and Wine Tasting

At a fromagerie located just where Canal Saint-Martin dips underground, you meet an expert in the art of cheese aging to learn about the cheeses of France, how they are made, and how they are aged to perfection in fromageries such as this one.

In the aging room , you are introduced to Beaufort (a raw cow's milk cheese produced in the French Alps), Etivaz (a hard, raw cow's milk cheese made in the Swiss Alps), and five other cheeses. You learn the history, traditions, and techniques of French cheese production, sampling at every stage. Each cheese is paired with a French wine.

5. Hotel Marais Bastille

Hotel Marais Bastille

Despite the name, the hotel is neither in the Marais nor at Place de la Bastille , but near to both on tranquil Boulevard Richard Lenoir. This Canal Saint Martin quartier affordable hotel features a rooftop terrace, garden, and a library. It's just steps from the Metro (Bréguet-Sabin) with easy access to the Marais, the Bastille, and even the train stations Gare du Nord and Gare de l'Est .

6. two napoleons.

Two Napoleons

In 1802 Napoleon Bonaparte ordered the construction of Canal Saint-Martin. His vision was for this canal and others it connected with to become supply routes for Paris bringing in food, fresh water, and other goods. Under the guidance of of Pierre-Simon Girard, a top notch mathematician and road engineer, the canal was completed in 1825.

Barely half-a-century later, Napoleon's nephew, Napoleon III, undertook another massive modernization of Paris by building boulevards, parks, and sewers. When nephew's own engineer, Baron Haussmann , was in the process of creating the new straight-as-an-arrow boulevard Voltaire, instead of just building a bridge over the famous waterway, he sent the canal underground to create Boulevards Jules Ferry and Richard-Lenoir that now run above the subterranean canal.

7. Going Underground

Going Underground

It was an odd decision by Haussmann to send the canal underground. In fact, he had to dig the canal lower and modify some locks to accomplish this. Coming from the north, the canal now dips underground near Place de la République and continues on to pass beneath Boulevard Voltaire all the way to Place de la Bastille (passing pretty much directly under the column), dumping out at The Arsenal, where private boats are docked.

This cavern-like passage makes for an extremely interesting canal boat ride. Another positive result is the narrow strip of parks created on Boulevard Jules Ferry and on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir. There are paths to stroll along, benches where you can rest, and play areas for children.

Hotel Gabriel

With a great location near Square Jules Ferry in the happening 11th Arrondissement, there's a zen-like vibe at the Gabriel. The common spaces are welcoming with a clean design and relaxing colors. 9. Restaurant Hôtel du Nord

Hôtel du Nord

Hôtel du Nord was made famous by the 1938 French film of the same name. It's worth seeking out to have a glass of wine by the authentic zinc counter or on the outdoor patio or have lunch in the classic bistro. The young owners have infused a new life into this cafe and restaurant that was once slated for demolition. (Not to be confused with the many accommodations that have "Nord" in their name, such as Hotel at Gare du Nord .)

13. Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley

Born to British parents in Paris, Alfred Sisley was sort of at the tail end of the Impressionists. Even though he spent most of his life in France, you can see in some of his work the influence of those British landscape painters of the 19th century. But Sisley was also influenced by, compared to, and overshadowed by Claude Monet.

Sisley was particularly attracted to water scenes — seasides, bridges, rivers, and by Canal Saint-Martin, and it's his 1870 painting of the canal that's shown here. But that wasn't the only time he painted the waterway. There's another 1872 Sisley of Canal Saint-Martin in Musée d'Orsay. Given that he produced over 900 canvases, it's likely that he did one or two others of the canal.

By the way, one of Sisley's paintings holds the dubious distinction of having been stolen three times , from the same museum, and recovered three times. Allée des peupliers de Moret , now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Nice was first stolen in 1978 when it was on loan to Marseilles (recovered in a sewer), again in 1998 (stolen by the museum's curator!), and again in 2007 (recovered once more in Marseilles). The lesson? Keep your valuable paintings away from Marseilles!

14. Inspector Maigret

Inspector Maigret

Long before the area was trending, Inspector Jules Maigret of the Police Judiciaire lived right on top of Canal Saint-Martin, or as near as one can get, on Boulevard Richard-Lenoir. Georges Simenon's fictional detective prowled the streets of a Paris that seems locked in the 1930s, even though the books were written right up until the 1970s.

Where exactly on Richard-Lenoir did Maigret live? Ahh, but that is the question that continues to intrigue readers.

Canal Saint-Martin

Canal Saint-Martin is both a waterway and a district of Paris. The former is a 4.5 kilometre long canal that connects the waters of northeast Paris to the Seine via nine locks. Canal Saint-Martin begins where Canal de l'Ourcq pours into Bassin de la Villette up in the 19th Arrondissement, and the first lock is beneath Metro Line 2 at Stalingrad.

  • The canal is drained and cleaned every decade or so. Not surprisingly, tons of treasure and trash (mostly trash) are uncovered.
  • Canal Saint-Martin connects the river Seine to Canal du Ourcq in northeast Paris and, beyond that, to the river l'Ourcq, which meanders through eastern France, often paralleling but never quite joining the river Marne.
  • The upper entrance of the canal is close to the Place de la Bataille de Stalingrad , up in the corner where the 10th meets the 19th Arrondissement.
  • The Metro lines serving this quartier are Line 11 and Line 5, running along Boulevard Richard Lenoir.
  • Canal Saint-Martin can be accessed from Paris Metro stations Stalingrad, Republique, Jaures, Oberkampf, Richard-Lenoir, Bastille, and Quai de la Rapée
  • In that regrettable period of urban planning of the 1960s there was talk abroad — among François Mitterrand and his cadre — of filling in Canal Saint Martin to make way for a wide motorway. These guys were enthralled by that urban planning goon, Le Corbusier. ( See what he wanted to do to Paris .) Luckily good sense (or small budgets) prevailed.

In the trendy, hip and vibrant 10e arrondissement of Paris, you’ll find it. Perhaps you’ll notice some locals playing boules in one of the sandbanks along the stretch of water, or maybe you’ll spot couples walking hand in hand along the river banks. This is Canal Saint Martin , an alternative destination to the Seine and where all Parisians in-the-know come to hang out…

Canal St Martin

Where is Canal Saint Martin?

Canal saint-martin: a history of paris’ hippest neighbourhood, #1 wander along the banks of the canal, #2 board a barge and take a trip along the water, #3 enjoy fall in paris, #4 admire the street art of canal saint-martin, #5 visit plantes pour tous, #6 search for filming locations, #7 go on a dinner cruise, #8 go cheese and wine tasting, le comptoir general (80 quai de jemmapes), pink flamingo (67 rue bichat), hotel du nord (102 quai de jemmapes), chez prune (71 quai de valmy), tigermilk (37 quai de valmy), bob’s juice bar (15 rue lucien sampaix), tien hiang (14 rue bichat), 9 hotel republique, hotel garden saint martin, renaissance paris republique, visiting canal-st-martin and the best time to go, du pain et des idées, el guacamole, enjoyed reading this neighbourhood guide to canal saint martin pin it now, read it again later.

Canal Saint Martin is in the heart of the 10th arrondissement , which in turn is one of twenty districts that make up the French capital. The area is located on the Rive Droite (right bank), which means that it’s to the North of the River Seine.

Far from the crowds of the Louvre and away from Paris’ most iconic River, the 4.6 km long canal stretches from the Canal d’Ourcq to the North, all the way down to the Seine in the south. The waterway was first constructed in the 19th century and is characterised by its straight stretches and iron-clad footbridges.

Completed in 1825, the purpose of the waterway was to increase the water supply in an ever-growing city with an ever-increasing need for freshwater.

The Canal was first commissioned by Napoleon I in 1802 to not only increase the amount of freshwater available to the population but to also provide water for fountains and street cleaning.

Since the time of Napoleon, and around the same time that all of the Haussmannian buildings were erected, the canal has been covered between Rue du Faubourg du Temple and Rue du Temple, mainly for space reasons! Nowadays, the Canal Saint Martin is where the locals hang out.

From Bastille, there is just a short stretch before the water reaches the River Seine. Today, the canal is drained every ten to fifteen years to allow for cleaning. And when this area is cleaned, you’ll never guess what they find!

Apart from all manner of bicycles, old furniture and sweet wrappers, the most recent clean in 2016 revealed things like a giant wheelie dustbin and even street signs. Long forgotten and lost items also included motorbikes, children’s toys, and more shockingly, even a gun.

Things to do along Canal Saint-Martin

If you’re looking for a lazy Sunday activity in Paris, then a stroll along St Martin’s water’s edge would be it. Filled with plenty of people-watching opportunities and ample space for Parisian-style picnics , head to the canal on a summer’s afternoon to waste away the day in a quirky spot in Paris.

One of the quirkiest things to do in this hip neighbourhood is to get on a barge and take a boat excursion along the water. Filled with things to see, a float down the canal will offer an entirely new perspective on the neighbourhood.

While there are plenty of boat cruises to be taken along the River Seine, book a River Seine Cruise from Parc de la Villette like this one which will take you through Canal Saint-Martin.

Of course, one of the best times to visit Paris is during the autumn (particularly towards the end of October and beginning of November when the fall foliage is at its prettiest) when the days are crisp and there’s no better time to relax under the heaters en terrasse among friends.

Well, Canal Saint-Martin is easily one of the best places to enjoy fall in Paris thanks to the sheer number of trees lining both sides of the waterfront.

All around Paris, you’ll find plenty of street art. From the well-known spray paint of Miss. Tic (plenty of her work can be found in the lost villages of Paris ) , to the ever-familiar Space Invader mosaics, the walls of the Canal Saint-Martin are quite literally awash with talent. In fact, the canal has inspired so many artists over the years that iconic names like Alfred Sisley have painted its watery depths.

If you’re as much of a fan as houseplants as we are, then you simply need to check out Plantes Pour Tous during your time in the 10th arrondissement. In general, the houseplants are incredibly well-priced for central Paris and are typically between €2 and €30.

If you’re a bit of a movie buff, then you may well want to take the time to wander both sides of the waterway, all the while searching for filming locations along its two sides.

After all, iconic films such as Amelie (one of the heroine’s favourite activities is to skip stones along the water) , Hôtel du Nord, Les Malheurs d’Alfred, and L’Atalante.

In other art forms, Edith Piaf (who once resided on nearby Rue Oberkampf) sang about the canal in her song ‘Les mômes de la cloche’. If you want to discover more of Edith Piaf’s Paris, then you can head to Père Lachaise cemetery in the 19th arrondissement, where the iconic singer is now buried.

Of course, you can go on Seine River Cruises, but if you’re looking for a more off the beaten path activity while in the  10th arrondissement, then you might consider booking a dinner cruise on Canal Saint Martin.

For example, this cruise offers an on-board dinner, as well as live commentary of what the boat is going past. See full details here.

One of the things that France is most famous for is its cuisine, and perhaps most notably its cheese and wine. Well, it’s possible to book a cheese and wine tasting session close to Canal Saint Martin.

Included in the experience is the opportunity to taste a selection of French cheeses which have been carefully paired with wines and some baguette . See full details now.

Eateries you must visit and cool bars you must hang out in along Canal Saint Martin

Open ’til late each evening, Le Comptoir General is like no other Parisian bar you’ve ever been to. Inside you’ll find great music, an eclectic museum, and even better cocktails. I don’t really want to ruin the surprise, so you should probably go for yourself!

Le Comptoir General (80 Quai de Jemmapes)

The concept of this takeaway pizza place is as outlandish as its name itself. And the idea is this: order and pay for your pizza at the counter. Then, you’ll be handed a pink balloon to take away and then you’ll go and sit somewhere along the water. Then, your pizza will be delivered to you once ready!

Named just like the film of the same moniker, Hôtel du Nord bar and restaurant are located in a picturesque place along the water’s edge. Head there to experience some traditional Parisian cuisine, or simply enjoy a coffee! You can even book to stay in this three-star historic hotel. Find all the details here.

Canal Saint Martin Neighbourhood Guide: Best things to do- Hotel du Nord filming locations

As its name would suggest, this plum coloured bar is upbeat and quirky. Always filled with the sound of lively voices and the gentle background hum of music, it’s a place to see and to be seen. Well-reviewed, the coffee is great while the menu changes daily, meaning that no two visits are ever the same!

Though this South American food chain has several locations across the city, one of the prettiest restaurant interiors is that found next to Canal Saint Martin. Wander inside and you can expect to find a menu consisting of quesadillas, tacos, and some of the most delicious cocktails I’ve tasted in Paris!

This quirky sandwich shop is a rarity in a city where most cafés and bars serve full courses, even in the middle of the day in the high heat of summer. It’s the perfect place to grab some food to go and head out along the canal to find a great spot to sit and eat.

If you’re looking for some of the best vegan food in Paris, then you’ll find it at Asian fusion restaurant, Tien Hiang. While everything on the menu is vegetarian, only one or two dishes aren’t vegan, meaning that a meat-free menu is available every day apart from when the restaurant is closed on Tuesdays!

Canal Saint Martin Neighbourhood Guide: Things to do in the 10e arrondissement of Paris, France:

Although the Canal is not necessarily a must-see on any visit to the capital (if you’re a first time visitor to the city, then you’ll most likely want to see iconic sights such as the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower) , the water is best visited in the summer months, when the air is warm and daylight lasts well into the evening.

Weather-dependent, late spring and early autumn are also great times to visit the canal. A trip to Saint Martin during the shoulder seasons will also ensure that you can avoid the crowds of Paris to the fullest extent, all the while maintaining the best opportunities for good weather. For more insider knowledge, check out my best Paris travel tips.

Due to its long length and the way the St Martin neighbourhood cuts through an entire swathe of Paris, there are plenty of metro stations to choose from when you visit! Gare de L’Est (Lines 4 & 7) Republique (Lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11) Jacques-Bonsergent (Line 5)  and Goncourt (Line 11) are all nearby. Overground, the canal is close to the Gare de Nord train station.

Foodie spots near Canal Saint Martin

If there’s one thing you should know about the 10th arrondissement, it’s that there are plenty of foodie spots surrounding the maze of streets that snake their way around the fringes of the water. As well as the previously mentioned places to eat at Canal Saint Martin, here are some of our top picks for where to ear in the 10th arrondissement.

Unfortunately, one of the best foodie spots in the 10e arrondissement is so popular and successful that it doesn’t even have to open on the weekend, which is when most people plan to visit the area.

Du Pain et des Idées  (literally translated into English as ‘Bread and Ideas’)  was founded by Christophe Vasseur (who formerly worked in fashion) close to two decades ago as an artisan boulangerie serving up traditional breadstuffs with some unique twists.

Though the boulangerie and patisserie is closed during the weekends, it remains one of the best bakeries in Paris . The true star of the show is that of the ‘escargot’ a viennoiserie which is so-called thanks to its circular shape.

How to Visit Du Pain et des Idées, Paris

The cool and trendy taqueria El Guacamole serves up a range of authentic Mexican food at incredibly reasonable prices. Easily one of the best cheap eats close to Canal Saint Martin, the best deal of all is to get the set menu which includes three soft tacos of your choice (though they’re all pretty delicious) served with a soft soda (also of your choice).

It’s also polite to wait to be seated and to say “Merci” (thank you) when receiving service. Remember that tipping is less prevalent in France than in some other countries, but leaving a small amount as a gesture of appreciation is always welcome.
  • Dress code: Parisians generally dress stylishly and take pride in their appearance. While there is no strict dress code, it’s advisable to dress neatly and avoid overly casual or beachwear attire when visiting restaurants or cultural sites.
  • Language: Although many locals in the Canal Saint-Martin District may speak English, making an effort to express a few basic French phrases such as “Bonjour,” “Merci,” and “S’il vous plaît” (please) can go a long way in showing respect and building rapport.

By being mindful of this etiquette and customs, you’ll be able to immerse yourself more seamlessly into the local culture and positively interact with the people of the Canal Saint-Martin District.

Language and Communication tips

saint martin canal tour paris

When visiting the Canal Saint-Martin District in Paris, here are some language and communication tips to enhance your experience:

  • Basic French Phrases: Learning a few basic French phrases can be helpful and appreciated by locals. Greet people with “Bonjour” (good day) or “Bonsoir” (good evening), say “Merci” (thank you), and use “S’il vous plaît” (please) when making requests.
  • Politeness: Politeness is highly valued in French culture, so remember to use “s’il vous plaît” and “merci” regularly. Saying “Excusez-moi” (excuse me) when trying to get someone’s attention or navigating through crowded areas is also polite.
  • English Communication: While many locals in the Canal Saint-Martin District may speak English, it’s respectful to begin conversations in French or ask if the person speaks English with “Parlez-vous anglais?” before switching to English. Politeness goes a long way in establishing positive communication.
  • Non-Verbal Communication: Pay attention to non-verbal cues and gestures. Maintaining eye contact when speaking or listening shows attentiveness, and a friendly smile can help create a positive impression.
  • Patience and Understanding: Be patient and understanding when communicating, especially if there are language barriers. Try to speak slowly and clearly, and don’t hesitate to use hand gestures or visual aids to facilitate understanding.
  • Language Apps: Consider using language translation apps or carrying a pocket-sized French phrasebook to assist in communication when needed. Canal Saint-Martin: Paris’s hidden waterway

You are currently viewing Canal Saint-Martin: Paris’s hidden waterway

  • Post category: Paris & Île-de-France
  • Post author: Nassie Angadi

On the Right bank of Paris in the 10th arrondissement , is one of the most beautiful spots in Paris, the Canal Saint-Martin. It is famous for its iron footbridges, trendy restaurants and bars, making it one of the most popular areas in Paris for the 20 to 40-something crowd.

History: Construction and Drainage

It was Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 who ordered the construction of Canal Saint Martin to supply Paris with fresh water and prevent disease. Money was initially raised for the construction with a tax on wine. But construction was not completed until 1825, after Napoleon was already defeated.

The 19th-century waterway was used to supply Paris with grain, building materials and other goods. The entrance to the canal starts at the Bassin de la Villette, which itself brings water from the Canal de l’Ourcq and the River Ourcq.

The canal is 2.86 miles (4.6 km) and it has nine locks and two swing bridges for a total water level height difference of 82 feet (25 meters). It is named after Saint Martin of Tours, one of the most famous saints of France .

These days, the Canal Saint-Martin is not used for any commercial purposes, other than the leisure boat cruises run for tourists. Indeed, it was almost closed and turned into a highway in the 1960s, before wiser urban planning prevailed.

Every ten or fifteen years, Paris goes ahead and drains the Canal Saint-Martin for cleaning. Everything from bicycles to water-logged cars has been found in the canal.

Today, the Canal is one of the most scenic spots in Paris, much loved by the locals who live in the area and the millions of visitors to city.

Boat cruises

There are boat cruises that start in the Bassin de la Villette in the north of Paris, and sail through the Canal Saint Martin before entering the Seine River. If you are looking at a map of Paris, you may be slightly confused because on map, it doesn’t look like the Canal connects to the Seine. That is because a portion of it is underground.

10th arrondissement on a map of Paris

Most visitors to the Place de la Bastille (corner of the 4th , 11th and 12th arrondissements) don’t realize that Canal Saint Martin is actually running underneath it. While the canal itself is 2.86 miles (4.6 km), about 1.25 miles (2 km) is actually underground.

under canal saint martin

During the era of Emperor Napoleon III (nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte), he hired Baron Haussmann to redesign Paris . Haussman decided to enclose the portion of the canal right before it feeds into the river Seine.

Today, this is one of the most popular boat cruises in Paris, starting off in the uncovered portion in Bassin de la Villette and continuing through the Canal towards the Seine. You can book a tour boat along the Canal Saint Martin here.

Restaurants

Around Canal Saint-Martin you will find a ton of small restaurants and brasseries that attract the local bobo crowd . Some popular restaurants in the area are:

  • Chez Prune – French brasserie at 36 Rue Beaurepaire, 75010 Paris
  • Le Marine – Café and restaurant at 55Bis Quai de Valmy, 75010 Paris
  • Favela Chic – Brazilian chic influence restaurant at 18 Rue du Faubourg du Temple, 75011 Paris

Canal Saint Martin at night

Bars and Nightlife

There are several bars and brasseries that line Canal Saint-Martin, but if you go early in the evening, you will also see a lot of locals having an apéro picnic along the quays of canal. Some local favorites are:

  • Point Ephemere – artsy grand classic on the quai at 200 Quai de Valmy, 75010 Paris
  • Le Comptoir Général – large bar with a hidden entrance that is a bit difficult to find for non-locals. Amazingly Beautiful decor. Also does sumptuous brunches. At 80 quai de Jemmapes, 75010 Paris
  • Bizz’art – large concert hall and nightclub

You can find more bars and nightlife options around Paris here.

Where to stay: Hotels and other accommodation

With eclectic bars, restaurants and nightlife at a variety of price points, there is always something to discover around Canal Saint-Martin. Some recommended hotels in the area are:

  • €€€ – La Planque Hotel
  • €€€€ – Crowne Plaza Paris République
  • €€€€€ – Renaissance Paris Republique Hotel & Spa

Can you swim in it?

In general, swimming is not allowed in Canal Saint-Martin. In the past, pollution levels made it dangerous for swimmers, although the City of Paris is working on cleaning up the Seine river and the Canal Saint-Martin to make it safer.

There are at times swimming competitions held along Canal Saint-Martin, where the water is tested beforehand.

The canal is drained and cleaned every 10-15 years, and it is always interesting to see the curiosities found among the hundreds of tons of discarded objects. From bottles and debris, to strollers and cars, and even a body or two, there is a reason that swimming in the canal is not recommended.

Are you allowed to drink by the Canal?

If you are planning a picnic in Paris, you should know that officially drinking is banned around the quays of Jemmapes and Valmy along the Canal Saint-Martin.

Unfortunately, complaints from nearby neighbors living along the Canal has led to the interdiction. However, you will often see locals picnicking imbibing along the quai, hoping to avoid notice.

What you’ll do

Explore Canal St Martin, one of Paris’s arty neighborhoods where the beautiful boutiques look more like galleries, and picnicking along the banks of the 19th-century waterways is a pastime. Your host knows which nonchalant-looking bars serve the best nibbles with their vin rouge , which cafes roast their coffee in-house and which stores are committed to ethical fashion. Along Rue de Marseille and Rue Beaurepaire, flit from fromageries to concept stores to contemporary galleries, or discover the old-world magic of the canal itself. Our tour guide was very friendly and hit all the places we wanted to go to. And even gave us fun facts about different things we were seeing along the way. It’s nice to understand the history behind what you’re looking at

Top guide who gave lots of very enriching historical explanations. We visited places we would never have been on our own, like St Louis Hospital. Great experience and beautiful scenery.

Anukool was approachable and friendly. He was knowledgeable about the canal and its history. We were lucky that the sun came out on the day. It was very pleasant to walk the length of the canal and back. Unlike many places in Paris, it is not crowded and one can enjoy the feeling of space and light. Anukool was good company; he was flexible and happy to incorporate anything that was of interest to me. I knew of the Canal but never got to visit the area before. Having walked it with a guide, I would love to return and to investigate the area further.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Salah and Katherine. They were very kind and curious guests, easy to talk to, and enthusiastic! We discussed about our cultures and our activities and it was so interesting. We spent time discovering the Parisian Canal area and I enjoyed very much showing them « my » Paris as a local. I hope to see them again in the future!

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

In the spring and summer, locals come in droves to the banks of the Saint-Martin Canal to picnic, strum guitars waterside, and bask in the lazy long evenings as dusk settles over the photogenic area. Cafes and quirky boutiques flank the water and iron footbridges. On Sundays , two streets running parallel to the canal, Quai de Valmy and Quai de Jemmapes, are reserved for pedestrians and cyclists—perfect for renting a bike and seeing the city from a fresh angle. Another possibility is to take a tour of the canal by boat. In short, there's something for nearly everyone on its charming banks.

Orientation and Transport

The Canal Saint-Martin neighborhood is nestled between Gare du Nord and Republique in Northeastern Paris, in the 10th arrondissement . The canal feeds into the Seine River in the South and the Bassin de la Villette and the Canal de l'Ourq in the North.

Main streets around the canal: Quai de Valmy, Quai de Jemmapes, Rue Beaurepaire, Rue Bichat.

Nearby: République, Belleville .

Getting There and Metro Stations

  • Gare de L'Est (Lines 4 & 7)
  • Republique (Lines 3, 5, 8, 9 and 11)
  • Goncourt (Line 11)
  • Jacques-Bonsergent (Line 5).

History of the Area, in Brief

Napoléon I ordered the construction of the Canal Saint-Martin in 1802. It was originally built to link to the Canal de l'Ourq, further north, to supply fresh water to the city.

In the 19th century, the area was mostly occupied by working-class laborers. Only recently has it started to attract well-to-do professionals eager to take up residence in apartments with views of the canal. As a result, it's come to be known as an area frequented by bohos; new restaurants, cafes, and fashion boutiques are continually springing up in the neighborhood.

The canal and its surroundings were entirely reconstructed on set for Marcel Carné's 1938 film, Hôtel du Nord . A restaurant and bar of the same name stand at 102 Quai de Jemmapes (see below for details).

Boat Tours of Canals and Waterways

Consider taking a cruise of the Canal Saint-Martin and Paris' underground waterways for a memorable experience. Particularly intriguing are the canal's lock systems, which fill certain stretches of the canal up with water at record speeds to allow passage of boats through otherwise too-low areas.

Eating, Drinking, and Shopping around the Canal Saint-Martin

Hôtel du Nord 102 Quai de Jemmapes Phone: +33(0)140 407 878

The filmmaker Marcel Carné immortalized the Hôtel du Nord by reproducing its facade for his 1938 movie of the same name. Originally built in 1885 as a hotel serving mostly manual laborers, the Hôtel du Nord is now a bar and restaurant.

Ambiance: A zinc bar, velvet curtains, low lamplight, and an extensive upstairs library give the former hotel a distinctly 1930’s charm.

Highlights: You can nurse a drink on the garden patio, play chess, browse the library, or enjoy a simple meal prepared with fresh ingredients and conceived by celebrated chef Pascal Brébant. Guaranteed nostalgia.

Lunch: around 15-25 Euros (approx. $16-26). Dinner: Between 18-30 Euros (approx. $19-$32).

Chez Prune 71 Quai de Valmy Phone: +33(0)142 413 047

Ambiance: Chez Prune is where trendy young Parisians go to see and be seen. This cheerful plum-colored bar and restaurant is constantly abuzz with chatter and music. The oddball deco includes objects made from recycled junk. A large terrace outside offers top-notch views of the canal during the spring and summer.

To eat: Chez Prune’s bistro-style fare, if a bit expensive, is always tasty and includes artful salads, quiches, cheese plates, and plats du jour.

Drinks: 4-10 Euros (approx. $4-$11) Lunch: around 15-20 Euros (approx. $16-$22) per person.

The Pink Flamingo 67 rue Bichat Tel.: +33(0)142 023 170

Indulge in a favorite neighborhood treat: get your pizza delivered canalside! A Franco-American couple co-owns the Pink Flamingo, a stylish joint where the pizza is reminiscent of some of the best New York-style slices.

The bonus: You can order your pie to go, take a pink balloon as proof of purchase, and relax on the banks of the canal. The delivery person will find you via the balloon.

Prices: Around 10-15 Euros (approx. $11-$16) per person.

Antoine et Lili 95 Quai de Valmy Tel.: +33(0)142 374 155

This quirky fashion boutique's bright yellow and pink facade is now an icon. Don't miss Antoine et Lili for the latest in kitschy urban fashion and campy "ethnic" threads. The "village" also includes a restaurant, bakery, and tearoom.

Please note that the prices and descriptions cited here were accurate at the time this article was published and updated but may change at any time.
