Review: 2014 Trek Remedy 8 29

trek_remedy8 - 1

Back in August the Singletracks team got together for three days of shredding challenging mountain bike trails near Salida, CO. On our first day out we tackled the Monarch Crest trail, descending the oft-overlooked Agate Creek trail , which provided an excellent opportunity to test the Trek Remedy 8 29 I borrowed from  Absolute Bikes  back in town.

The Trek Remedy is a popular trail bike among Singletracks readers; in fact, it tied for fifth most popular trail bike  with the Santa Cruz Tallboy in our 2015 survey. I ride a Tallboy at home (though not the LT version), so I was stoked to ride a bike of roughly the same caliber as my everyday rig.

trek_remedy8 - 2

Trek offers the Remedy in 27.5″ and 29er wheel configurations, and the bike I tested is the 2014 29er version. The bike has 140mm of travel front and rear and features Trek’s Mino Link adjustable geometry that allows the rider to run either a 67.5° head tube angle or a more slack 67°. For my test ride, the Remedy was in the 67° configuration–more on that later.

To be perfectly honest, the 2014 Trek Remedy 8 I tested features a mostly uninspiring build kit. The 3×10 Shimano SLX drivetrain is probably a good call on a rental bike in the steep mountains of Colorado, but this is no custom spec–the 2014 Remedy 8 actually shipped with this drivetrain. The Fox 34 up front is burly but heavy, and the seat post on the 2014 Remedy 8 isn’t a dropper.

trek_remedy8 - 4

Shimano SLX brakes are spec’d on the 2014 Remedy 8 I tested, and this is the one place where Trek seems to have cut costs (with Deore) in the 2016 version. The wheels, bars, stem, seatpost, and even saddle on the 2014 Remedy 8 are Bontrager (Trek house brand) components, which makes it tough to compare to similar bikes (unless they are Trek bikes). Suffice it to say none of these components stood out during my test ride.

The Remedy 8 looks sharp and is color-coordinated from the frame to the fork to the saddle and spacers and lock-on grips. The sloping downtube is unmistakably Trek, and the skid plate on the underside is a solid, nice touch. Ditto for the integrated chain guard in the rear.

All told, the Remedy 8 I tested is heavy. So heavy, in fact, that I audibly grunted the first few times I picked the bike up. Greg’s scale showed about 34 pounds with the bike loaded up as shown (note the massive pump and tool bag on the saddle) so to be fair, I’ll estimate the (size large) bike weighs 32 pounds.

Absolute even matched their sticker to the bike.

Speaking of the pump and tools, kudos to Absolute for packing this stuff for me! Yes, it adds weight, but the rides around Salida are all pretty remote and having a proper pump, extra tube, and tools is super important. Not everyone travels with this gear, so it’s great to have it included with a rental bike. In the past Absolute has also included at least one water bottle to use and keep after the ride.

On the Trail

The Monarch Crest -> Agate Creek route we rode starts out just like the more traditional Monarch Crest -> Silver Creek -> Rainbow Trail route with a stiff climb up to 12,000 feet for a total of nearly 1,000+ feet of climbing before the descent begins. On the climb up the Trek felt stiff enough with little noticeable pedal bob but still, it definitely felt heavy.  Having the Mino Link set to a 67° head tube angle probably made matters worse than if it had been in the default 67.5° position.

Interestingly, the 2016 Remedy figuratively “flips the switch” on the Mino Link, giving the rider the choice between a 67.5° head tube angle and a steeper 68.2° angle. Again, I think this is an excellent change and should make up for some of the shortfalls in the climbing abilities of the 2014 Remedy 8.

photo: Michael Paul

Once the trail turned downhill, the Remedy 8 let its hair down a bit and felt like a much more confident bike. The Agate Creek descent is steep and rocky, with roots and a ton of stream crossings where the Remedy 8 performed well. I wouldn’t describe the suspension platform as super plush, but it wasn’t harsh either. As expected, the 29er wheels were definitely at home on the brief section or two of wide-open flowy goodness, but a bit clumsy in the low speed tech.

With two big Colorado rides on the 2014 Trek Remedy 8 under my belt, my impression is there is a lot that can be improved about this bike. Fortunately it seems like Trek has addressed most of these concerns with the 2016 version while keeping the price roughly the same, which is obviously great news for consumers. I’m definitely interested in getting on the latest Remedy 8 to rally this bike more properly.

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 first ride review

Lively trail bike that’s a real blast to ride

Robin Weaver

2014 trek remedy 8

The second-cheapest bike in Trek’s six-strong Remedy line-up still packs one hell of a punch when it comes to value and character on the trail.

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 frame

I opted for the alloy Remedy 8 over the identically priced 9.7, which has a carbon frame but a lesser spec.

Both share the same frame features, including the Mino Link chips that make it a doddle to switch between the bike’s high and low geometry settings. In the high mode, the bike had a head angle of 66.4 degrees, its bottom bracket sat 345mm off the floor and it had a reasonable 445mm reach.

The low setting slackens the head (and seat) angle by 0.5 degrees and lowers the bottom bracket by nearly 10mm. Another neat touch is the Knock Block steering limiter. This ensures the fork crown won’t spin around and smash into the Remedy’s straight down tube (made so to increase stiffness and reduce weight).

The 150mm (5.9in) of rear wheel travel is controlled by a RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock, complete with Trek’s proprietary RE:aktiv tune. This is clamped between the EVO rocker link and extended chainstay tips.

Internal cable routing keeps the bike looking clean and uncluttered, but means maintenance won’t be quite as faff free. Not everyone will be a fan of the press-fit bottom bracket.

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 kit

The top-end RockShox Deluxe RT3 shock comes with Trek’s proprietary RE:aktiv internals

My bike was delivered with Schwalbe Nobby Nic tyres in place of the Bontrager XR4 Team Issues that should come as standard. After flatting the Schwalbes all too easily, it was a relief when Trek sent over some XR5s, which proved far more resilient to puncturing and offered more consistent grip in the wet conditions I tested the Remedy in.

Trek has ditched its habit of sticking travel-adjust forks on the Remedy this year, which is no bad thing. The Remedy 8 comes with RockShox’s formidable Lyrik RC, which pumps out a well-controlled 160mm (6.3in) of travel.

Trek Remedy 8 27.5 ride

The Remedy really is a class all-rounder. Point it uphill and it’ll claw its way up just about any pitch without fuss and feels reasonably stable under power, even with the shock left in its open mode.

That eagerness is helped by the bike’s relatively low weight and, with the Schwalbe tyres (in the ADDIX SpeedGrip compound) fitted, what felt like little in the way of rolling resistance.

Even after I made the change to the more robust Bontrager rubber, the Remedy was still keen to get going, and the grip on offer was more predictable, even on wet rocks and roots. They’re tougher too and won’t have you wincing every time you clatter into a rock section, waiting for the sound of air escaping.

There's plenty of control up front and a sensitive yet supportive feel at the rear

Its suspension balance is impressive too, with plenty of control up front and a sensitive yet supportive feel at the rear, which adds to its playful yet confident feel on the trail.

The frame is taut, responsive and accurate when you load it hard into a turn or hop from line to line, and the low-slung bottom bracket (in the low setting) means its surefooted through the corners.

While it may not feel like a super-stable, point-and-shoot downhill bomber on really roughed up, high-speed trails, its composure and well-measured delivery of its travel meant I never felt out of our depth.

The Remedy 8 is a great all-rounder that’s a blast to ride, no matter what trail lies ahead.

Trek Remedy 8 : In Depth Test of the 2018 model

The Trek Remedy range is one of Treks most popular full suspension platforms. Trek Remedy riders are equipped with a versatile bike that feels at home when riding hard on technical terrain.

Who is it for?

If you ride terrain with technical descents, but need something that will get you back up the hills, the Trek Remedy is a great option for you. This is the perfect bike for riding at trail centres, as it is fun on the type of terrain they offer.

How Does it Ride?

We rode the Trek Remedy 8 at Coed y Brenin in North Wales . We took it on the Dragon’s Back trail. This trail has a good mix of climbing, single track and technical descents. Therefore, it was the perfect trail to test a bike like this.

As soon as I got on the Trek Remedy 8, it felt like the perfect size for me. The bike I had was a medium and I am about 5’9. The reach felt very similar to my own bike, so I felt at home on it straight away.

As soon as I started pedaling towards the trail, it instantly felt light and easy, indicating that I was going to have a really fun time with this bike.

Trek remedy

Climbing with the Trek Remedy was made easier by the lock out function on the Rock Shox rear shock absorber. It has three settings. One setting for descents and technical sections, one to reduce the “bounce” for pedaling and one that locks it out completely, for steeper climbs and road use.

The SRAM GX 12 speed Eagle drive train makes light work of long ascents. The bike I tested had an oval front chain ring, of which I am a big fan of. This also helped with fighting gravity.

Descending and Flow Sections

The geometry of the Trek Remedy is slightly longer than what you would find on a cross-country bike, this means that it is more stable on the way back down. This makes the Trek Remedy super fun, instills confidence. The short stem and wide handle bars helped it feel nimble and capable when the terrain got a bit technical.

When barreling along flowy single track sections is where the Trek Remedy really feels fun. These sections are where its agility starts to shine through when you are twisting through the trees. This is partly to do with how the 160mm RockShox Lyric RC forks and Deluxe RT3 shock smoothly absorb the smaller rocks and roots you encounter. But, they also make the bike feel planted when you land after hopping over other features on the trail.

When it comes to stopping, the SRAM Guide R brakes had a good feel to them. They provided progressive braking and gave further confidence in the bike’s ability.

Trek Remedy

Where is the Trek Remedy 8 good for?

I would say that the Trek Remedy 8 is perfect for trail centres and most terrain off the beaten track. If you were thinking about riding one in the alps, you would get by in the man made style bike parks, and would have a lot of fun. This is down to its agility and suspension travel. However, if you were to take it to areas with particularly technical terrain, such as La Thuile or Finale Ligure in Italy, you would feel “under biked” and would struggle.

Key Features

  • Alpha Platinum Aluminium Frame makes it super responsive
  • RockShox Lyrik RC Fork soaks up the bumps excellently
  • RockShox Deluxe RT3 Rear Shock provides excellent cushioning and helps with efficient pedaling
  • SRAM GX Eagle 12 Speed Drivetrain gets you up the hills with ease
  • SRAM Guide R hydraulic disc Brakes for smooth progressive braking that gives you confidence
  • The 2018 Trek Remedy 8 is fun, aggressive and capable for most people’s style of riding.
  • Climbing is made easy by the lockout function on the shock absorber.
  • This bike is agile and fun in flowy single track thanks to its geometry.
  • When riding downhill, the Trek Remedy 8 is nimble and instills confidence, but big technical alpine descents may be too much for it

Product features

Straight shot w/knock block.

Trek's Straight Shot frame design optimizes the stiffness-to-weight ratio for a more responsive ride. You'll be able to push harder and stay more planted on your line when the going gets rough.

Will my bike have a curved top tube?

Smaller frames (S) have a top tube that dips down as it approaches the seat tube. This design makes for a lower standover height, which is good for shorter riders because it allows them to straddle their bike more easily. Larger frames (M and up) have a straight top tube because taller riders with longer legs typically don’t have the same issues with standover height.

Suspension Calculator

This suspension calculator will help you optimize your suspension settings for your riding weight. Simply follow the steps to find your best set up.

Complete Tubeless System

Tubeless Ready rims and tires make it easy to ditch the tubes so you get better traction, fewer flats, and less weight. You're ready to roll right out of the box with the included TLR rim strips, valves, and sealant.

Alpha Platinum Aluminum

Our premium lightweight aluminum is continuously cold extruded and butted at multiple points, and hydroformed into sophisticated tube shapes for maximum strength and minimum weight.

Control Freak Cable Management

The lightest, quietest, most versatile cable management system allows any combination of shift, brake, lockout, and dropper post lines to be routed through the frame for clean looks and the ultimate custom setup.

Internal dropper compatible

Internal routing ports make it easy to add a dropper post upgrade that lets you lower your saddle on the fly so it's out of your way for tricky sections of trail.

Mino Link adjustable geometry

Fine tune head tube angle by 1/2° and BB height by up to 10mm with the simple turn of a nut. Just flip the link to choose between slack or slacker geometry, without negatively affecting suspension performance. A Trek exclusive.

Boost148/110

Wider dropouts (110mm front, 148mm rear) give you the stiffness of a 27.5" wheel with all the benefits of a 29" wheel, and Boost148 in the rear lets you run wider tires and a larger chainring without affecting q-factor and pedaling efficiency.

The 3×10 Shimano SLX drivetrain is probably a good call on a rental bike in the steep mountains of Colorado, but this is no custom spec-the 2014 Remedy 8 actually shipped with this drivetrain. The Fox 34 up front is burly but heavy, and the seat ...

The Trek Remedy 8 is a prime example of an accessible trail bike. A huge group of riders can have fun on this rig and that is a high compliment.
