The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Windstar Cruises ship

Gene Sloan

Where can you go on a Windstar Cruises ship? A surprising number of places, given the line's small size. Despite having just six vessels, the upscale line operates voyages to a wide range of destinations around the world, from North America and Europe to French Polynesia.

Among all the Windstar cruise destinations, Europe might be the most popular. As is often the case with higher-end lines, Windstar has a particularly large footprint when it comes to Europe itineraries. Nearly half of the 534 voyages currently on its schedule for 2024 focus on either the Mediterranean or Northern Europe. In a typical year, the line will deploy five of its six ships to Europe for at least part of the year.

Windstar also typically deploys at least one of its vessels year-round to Tahiti for sailings around the islands of French Polynesia. It's a particular specialty of the line.

In the winter, at least two and sometimes three Windstar vessels will move to the warm waters of the Caribbean, another area of focus. In addition to classic Caribbean sailings, those vessels also often do sailings through the Panama Canal, another specialty of the line.

Currently, Windstar's itinerary lineup offers sailings as short as six nights and as long as 55 nights. The company generally doesn't do short sailings of just three or four nights, unlike big-ship lines.

Here, a look at TPG's picks for the five best destinations you can visit on a Windstar Cruises ship.

Mediterranean

Of all the places that Windstar ships sail, none gets as much focus from the line as the Mediterranean . As of the publishing of this story, a whopping 212 of the 534 voyages on the line's schedule for the coming year included calls in the region. That's 40% of all Windstar itineraries.

The Mediterranean trips offer a wide range of port stops and vary greatly in length. There is everything from relatively short, seven-night sailings around the sunny Greek islands to 23-day voyages that span a good chunk of the Mediterranean from Montenegro and Croatia to the far western coast of Spain.

Windstar features voyages focused specifically on the Western Mediterranean or the Eastern portion and voyages that include days traveling beyond the edges of the Mediterranean to such places as the Canary Islands.

Typical of the latter is the line's epic, 18-night "Star Collector: Canaries, Casablanca and the Costa del Sol" routing. It's a one-way trip between Barcelona and the Canary Islands with a mix of stops in Spain, Portugal, Morocco and the Canary Islands. It's a deep exploration into the western side of Europe and North Africa.

Some of Windstar's Mediterranean itineraries also include a visit to Israel, although port stops in Israel have been canceled for the next few months due to the war between Israel and Hamas. For now, Israel remains on itineraries scheduled to depart in April 2024 and beyond.

Typical of the line's more focused, quickie Mediterranean itineraries are its eight-night "Myths and Marvels of the Aegean" routing out of Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens) that concentrates on the islands of Greece and Turkey with seven stops in the countries.

In the Mediterranean, the line's main hubs are Piraeus, Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Barcelona.

Windstar has been one of the leaders in a trend that has swept the cruise world in the past decade: cruises that focus solely on Iceland.

In 2016, Windstar became the first traditional cruise brand to operate complete circumnavigations of the Kentucky-size island nation, joining a handful of expedition-style cruise operators such as Lindblad Expeditions and Hurtigruten that were starting to add Iceland circlings.

And while other cruise brands including Ponant and Scenic Luxury Cruises have since followed Windstar in offering voyages that take in every corner of Iceland, Windstar remains one of the biggest players in the market with regular summer sailings.

In a typical year, Windstar will offer seven-night circlings of Iceland every week from June through late August.

The trips begin and end in Reykjavik, Iceland's main city and capital. The ship will sail in a counterclockwise direction around the country with stops at some of Iceland's most remote areas. It's a chance to see the full range of Iceland's famously striking geothermal fields of geysers and fumaroles, mountains, glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls without having to navigate the ring road that circles the country. And it includes stops in some of Iceland's smallest and quirkiest towns.

In 2024, the 312-passenger Star Pride will call on places like Heimaey Island, where passengers see the frozen-in-place lava flows of a famous 1973 eruption that covered a third of the town.

Another call at little-visited Grundarfjordur, along the remote Snæfellsnes Peninsula, offers the chance to hike onto the glacier atop nearby Snæfellsjökull volcano, the setting for Jules Verne's 19th-century classic "Journey to the Center of the Earth."

Other stops include Akureyri, the gateway to the geothermal fields of of Hverir and their bubbling mud pots and whistling steam vents.

French Polynesia

Windstar has been a longtime leader in French Polynesia cruises, too, operating in the region for 37 years. In fact, it's one of just two traditional cruise lines that dominate the market for French Polynesia voyages — the other being one-ship line Paul Gauguin Cruises.

Like Paul Gauguin Cruises, Windstar offers French Polynesia sailings year-round out of Papeete, Tahiti, the main hub for the region. Ranging from seven to 18 nights, the trips take in such iconic French Polynesian islands as Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahaa and Huahine. They appeal heavily to couples looking for a romantic getaway.

For many years, Windstar has used one of its sailing ships, the 148-passenger Wind Spirit, for its French Polynesia sailings. But in early 2024, it replaced that vessel in the region with one of its bigger motor-powered vessels, the 312-passenger Star Breeze.

The redeployment more than doubles Windstar's capacity in the region, a sign of just how popular these trips have become.

The voyages offer a large amount of time in each of the islands that are visited, thanks to the short distances between them. In most cases, the ship travels between the islands overnight and ties up or anchors in a new stunning bay each morning.

As is typical for French Polynesian trips, whether on land or water, days are spent exploring sandy tropical beaches, swimming and snorkeling in ridiculously clear water and visiting cultural attractions. You'll have a chance to visit the sites where locals harvest the cultured black pearls that account for more than half of French Polynesia's exports.

Diving is also a big draw on these trips. It's a top excursion during calls at the islands of Raiatea and Bora Bora. Snorkeling with stingrays and joining a marine biologist in search of dolphins and whales are other popular excursions.

Like many upscale cruise brands operating smaller ships, Windstar doesn't focus on Caribbean cruises . The Caribbean is more the domain of such big-ship cruise giants as Carnival Cruise Line or Royal Caribbean . Still, Windstar typically sends at least two of its six vessels to the Caribbean every winter to operate warm-weather-focused getaways to lesser-visited Caribbean ports — usually one of its motor-powered vessels and one of its wind-powered sailing vessels.

For 2024, Windstar's two main vessels in the Caribbean will be the 312-passenger Star Pride, a motor-powered vessel, and the 342-passenger Wind Surf, a sailing vessel. One other Windstar sailing ship, the 148-passenger Wind Spirit, will also make an occasional appearance in the region.

For the most part, WIndstar's lineup of Caribbean cruises is focused on round-trip, seven-night sailings out of St. Martin or Barbados.

When sailing out of St. Martin, the voyages typically include stops in St. Barts, Antigua, Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands. When sailing out of Barbados, the ships will call at more southerly Caribbean islands such as St. Lucia and the Grenadines.

For 2024, most of the line's sailings out of St. Martin will take place in the first part of the year, while the Barbados-based sailings will come at the end of the year.

In addition, the line also sometimes offers Caribbean sailings out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with calls in St. Maarten (the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin), Guadeloupe, St. Lucia and the Grenadines.

At times, the line will run back-to-back seven-night sailings in the Caribbean with different itineraries. The two trips can be paired to create a longer, 14-night voyage with few repeating ports.

Panama Canal

windstar cruises ports of call

In addition to Caribbean trips, Windstar is known for a large number of sailings that begin in the Caribbean and end in the Pacific, or vice versa — voyages that involve a transit between the two regions via the Panama Canal.

Such trips offer travelers a chance to see the marvel of modern engineering that is the 48-mile-long Panama Canal up close. An entire day is spent traveling through the canal, including transits of the locks found at each end.

As is the case with many Panama Canal cruises, passengers on Windstar canal cruises also get a second chance to experience the canal the day before or after the transit when their ship docks at one side or the other of the canal. Shore excursions will take them to the locks for an up-close view of the lock chambers that their ship will navigate the next day (or passed through the previous day).

In a typical year, Windstar will offer as many as two departures a week through the Panama Canal from late November through the end of March. It typically has two of its six vessels operating such journeys in winter — one sailing ship and one motor ship.

Related: The best time to cruise the Panama Canal

The trips all are one-way, starting in either Aruba in the Caribbean or the port of Balboa on the Pacific side of Panama.

In addition to the experience of traveling through and visiting the canal, the Pacific-bound sailings visit Colombia, Costa Rica and the Caribbean side of Panama.

The Caribbean-bound sailings bring calls along the Pacific side of Costa Rica and Panama.

Bottom line

Windstar is a relatively small cruise line with just six ships, but its ships visit a wide array of cruise destinations. The line is known for regularly moving its vessels around the world to offer a diverse lineup of itineraries everywhere from North America and Europe to French Polynesia.

Windstar Cruises – The Ultimate Guide

Windstar Yacht and Sailing Ships

Windstar Cruises is a luxury cruise line that offers a relaxed, comfortable environment onboard their ships. The cruise line wants to take small ship cruising in a different direction.

They have smaller, more intimate ships (less than 350 passengers) that allow you to go to unique ports that the larger ships can’t. This gives you a completely different cruise vacation.

You can really get immersed in the destination and cultures you visit. The cruise line doesn’t just want you to see the world, they want to get you close enough that you can fully live it.

Their mission is to take you, “180 degrees from ordinary, where all your senses are indulged and your sense of wonder is awakened.”

History & Overview:

Windstar Cruises began in 1986 with three sailing vessels. If you have ever wondered what if felt like for explorers setting off and sailing the wide ocean, now you can find out.

In 2006, the company added three more vessels, which are powered yachts to their fleet of ships.

Destinations & Itineraries:

Spending time with Windstar Cruises in Alaska

The cruise fleet pretty much sails everywhere in the world. The ships visit more than 60 countries and stop in over 300 ports of call.

However, they focus on more unique ports of call in each destination they visit. Some of these destinations include Alaska, Arabia, Canada, Asia, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, and more.

If you are looking for a cruise that gives you a balance of the popular cities and unique, off-the-beaten-path, ports of call then you will love Windstar Cruises.

If you are looking for a small ship experience that focuses on the remote areas and ports of call and has a more casual atmosphere, then you should check out Uncruise Adventures .

Cruise Ships in the Fleet:

Windstar Cruises has six ships in the fleet. There are two different types of vessels, three sailing ships (Wind Star, Wind Spirit, and Wind Surf) and three powered yachts (Star Pride, Star Legend, and Star Breeze).

While both types offer you the intimate, small ship experience with incredible food and personalized service. However, the experience will be completely different.

Sailing Ships:

Wind Star ship in Istanbul Turkey

There are three sailing ships in the fleet (Wind Star, Wind Spirit, and Wind Surf). They have smaller staterooms than the powered yachts.

The entry-level, standard rooms are around 188 square feet. They feature ocean view staterooms also. However, they do not have any balcony staterooms.

The sailing ships have smaller bathrooms that are shower only. You will not be able to get a room with a bathtub on these ships.

All three of the sailing ships have at least one suite on them, that are larger and more spacious for you to enjoy.

Powered Yachts:

Star Breeze sailing in Panama

There are three powered yachts in the fleet (Star Pride, Star Legend, and Star Breeze). These have larger rooms than the sailing ships.

The entry-level, standard rooms are about 277 square feet. The bathrooms feature marbled floors and bathtubs. There are thirty-six staterooms on the ship with French balconies.

These are the balconies where you can open the door to get fresh air and look out, but you don’t step outside. The balcony areas are part of your stateroom.

I like these better because they make your stateroom larger and even if the weather is poor you can still utilize the space. There are also several suites on each of the ships that are larger and feature separate bedrooms.

Pro Tip: If you want to get one of the suites on any of the ships you need to book them early because they sell out really fast.

Dining Options on Windstar Cruises:

Windstar Cruises is the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation. In 2017 the cruise line and the foundation partnered to launch wine & food themed cruises.

All of the meals onboard the ship are made fresh when you order them. The chefs will go out to the local markets in the destinations so you can get a taste of authentic dishes of that region.

You will get high-quality meals made with fresh ingredients. If you have any food allergies or special dietary needs, just let them know and they will work with you on your meals.

Amphora Restaurant (Main Dining Room):

Amphora Restaurant

The main dining room works the same as on river cruises where there are no set tables or dining times. They will list what time the dining room is open for each meal and you show up between those times to eat.

For example, if dinner is from 7pm to 9pm, you don’t have to show up right at 7. As long as you show up between the two times you are able to get a seat and eat your meal.

Room Service:

The room service is available 24-hours a day at no additional cost to you. You can order whatever you want off of the room service menu and have it delivered to your room. Perfect for when you want a lazy morning in your room.

Veranda Restaurant

The Veranda is a casual dining venue onboard the ship. It’s open for breakfast and lunch where they feature a full buffet and an a la carte menu that you can order from when you want.

This is on the top deck and features floor to ceiling windows so you get an amazing panoramic view of the destination you are visiting.

When the weather is nice, they open up the windows so the venue becomes an open-air veranda for you to enjoy.

Stella Bistro (Wind Surf only):

Stella Bistro is another great dining venue that features French-inspired cuisine. There are wines that you can pair with your meal and the desserts are absolutely delicious.

Candles Restaurant

This is an alfresco dining experience. It is a romantic venue with the linen cloth tables that is near the pool. You can enjoy a gorgeous view of the sunset or dine under the stars in the evening.

It’s a great place to celebrate a special occasion or have a date night onboard the ship. There is no additional charge to dine here, but you do need to make reservations for it.

If the weather is poor, this restaurant might not be open.

Pro Tip: If you want to dine here on a specific night, book it before you get on the ship if you can or right when you get on the ship.

Outdoor BBQ:

One night during the cruise they close the main dining room and put on an outdoor barbecue for everyone to enjoy. It’s takes place up by the pool.

They decorate the whole area and they will feature a DJ and a dance space. The food will include chicken, steak, jumbo shrimp, lobster, pates, and various desserts.

This is a really popular, fun event where you get to party and just have fun with your new friends.

What is the atmosphere like onboard the ships?

Relax at the bar on Windstar Cruises

While this is a luxury cruise line, it features a very low-key and welcoming atmosphere onboard its ships. They are going for a casually, elegant (think country-club casual) environment for you to enjoy.

These ships are small enough that you will easily get to know both the crew and your fellow passengers. You get to speak with and get to know the captain and officers.

They want you to feel like you are on a friend’s private yacht. You will get nice plush robes, fresh fruit, and amazing amenities in your stateroom.

The nice thing about the smaller ship is that the staff will get to know your likes and dislikes. If you have certain seating preferences, they will accommodate you.

If you like a certain type of water or favorite alcoholic beverage, they will remember that. You really get excellent, personalized service on this cruise line.

What is the Windstar Cruises’ dress code?

The dress code onboard their ships are country club casual. They don’t have any formal nights. You can dress up if you want, but it is not required of you.

However, they do expect you to not show up for dinner in a t-shirt and jeans. During the day it is more casual because you will be doing different water activities and visiting the various ports of call.

In the evening, you will want to freshen up and look decent for both dinner and the evening entertainment.

Activities Onboard:

Windstar Cruises watersports platform

The cruise ships have many different activities that you can choose. We were surprised by the amount of different options that you have, being that these are smaller ships.

There is a fitness center where you can work out. They also have a spa where you can get all of the different treatments. You can relax and read a book in the library or put your luck to the test in the casino.

There is also a small pool that you can use. As well as at least one lounge where you can enjoy some drinks with your friends while listening to music.

The ships will feature different guest lecturers and you can also go see one of the cooking demonstrations they have onboard.

Unique Features of Windstar Cruises:

hang out on the bridge with Windstar Cruises

The ships have an open bridge policy where you can at any time and visit with the captain and officers. You can ask questions and they will show you the equipment and how they use the charts.

It is a really unique experience that the bigger ships don’t have. On the sailing ships they will teach you how they use everything and give you a sailing lesson.

Also, each ship in the fleet has a water deck where you can take out a kayak, paddle board, or borrow some snorkel gear to use. These are available to you at no charge for any sea days that your itinerary has.

The cruise line focuses on not only taking you to the unique ports of call, but also offering really unique and special experiences while in the destination. Some of the itineraries will include a complimentary Destination Discovery Event.

For example, on their Treasures of the Greek Isles itinerary you will get a special private, after-hours tour of the Celsus Library of Ephesus, followed by a 5-course meal in the courtyard under the stars while listening to music by a trio from the Aegean Chamber Orchestra.

What’s included in the price of your cruise?

  • Your stateroom accommodations
  • All of your meals, including 24-hour room service
  • All non-alcoholic beverages, including gourmet coffees and teas
  • Each passenger over 21 years of age is allowed to bring on one bottle of wine without charge when you first arrive on the ship
  • Also, any wine or beer you purchase while in port you can bring on with you (they will be subject to a corkage fee if you want the staff to open them for you)
  • Welcome cocktail reception
  • All onboard entertainment and activities
  • All water sports equipment available on the ship

What’s not included in your cruise?

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Shore excursions

Should you sail on this ship?

If you like a more casual, comfortable experience where the ship is small and everyone gets to know each other then you will love this cruise line.

It is a lot like the river cruise lines, only on the ocean. The atmosphere is much the same though. If you need a lot of thrilling activities and the big Broadway-style shows, then this is not the cruise line for you.

This cruise line is very port intensive and more about the destinations than the activities onboard the ship. It gives you a good balance of the big, popular cities and the more remote ports of call.

The itineraries are very unique. This cruise line does attract more mature, well-traveled passengers.

Windstar Cruises Wind Surf Cruise Review

Share this post:

Introduction to wind surf.

The largest in Windstar Cruises’ fleet of six luxury yachts, the Wind Surf is the world’s largest sailing cruise ship. The ship holds slightly over 300 passengers and has 155 staterooms. Cruising on a ship of this size was a great departure for us, as we normally sail on some of the largest ships in the world with thousands of other cruisers.

Being on a more intimate vessel certainly had some perks. We were both acclimated to the ship within hours of boarding. The public venues, focused on deck 4, are in close proximity to one another, allowing for easy access to the Yacht Club’s espresso cafe, pool bar, pool and loungers, and the main dining room.

With a total of 6 decks, there is plenty of outdoor space that you can enjoy. While a rather simple layout, you can easily find nooks and crannies of the ship to call your own.

There is still a gym, a spa, and the line’s signature Marina. This additional “deck” is off the back of the ship filled with sports equipment allowing you to kayak, swim, snorkel, and even wakeboard!

During our seven-day voyage, we rarely encountered any lines or wait times. No matter the time of day, there seemed to always be enough seating for popular events and meals. Cruising on a vessel of this size is certainly an adjustment for us mega-ship fans, but getting to visit unique islands that the larger ships can’t was worth the trade-off.

Ports of Call

This seven-night Caribbean Celebrations cruise had no sea days.

Originating from St. Maarten, we were lucky to secure a direct flight from Boston, MA that landed early afternoon. With transfers arranged by the cruise line, we were taxied to the ship which was docked next to other vessels in port for the day, including Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

From St. Maarten, we ventured to other lesser-visited islands including several British Virgin Islands including Tortola, Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke, Virgin Gorda, as well as Antigua, Barbuda, and St. Barts.

In both Antigua and Tortola, we completed island tours to see some of the destinations’ most significant landmarks. In Antigua, we visited the popular vantage point Shirley Heights and spent an hour exploring Nelson’s Dockyard. In Tortola, our tour included a scenic drive around the island, a quick stop at the Callwood Rum Distillery, and a 45 minute beach break at Cane Garden Bay Beach.

Being the only cruise ship still stopping in Barbuda, we had the island to ourselves. We were able to see the island’s main city, Coddington, while also exploring the frigate bird sanctuary. Even though the natural mangroves were partially destroyed by the hurricanes, it was great to still see thousands of these majestic birds and to learn more about this rare species. We are glad to see that the island is slowly bouncing back from all the devastation in 2017.

The lesser visited islands of Norman Island and Jost Van Dyke were perfect for beach breaks. Cruisers on larger ships can access the White Bay beach in Jost Van Dyke from Tortola. It is home to the famous Soggy Dollar Bar. Legend has it that the popular drink the Painkiller was first crafted at this location. Cruisers can also access Norman Island for some snorkeling via an excursion from Tortola.

We highly suggest you consider taking a trip to Jost Van Dyke if you visit the BVIs. The lower bay beach was one of the best beaches that we have visited in the Caribbean. It does get busy, so make sure you take the earliest possible ferry/tour to be guaranteed a spot on the beach.

White Bay Beach

During our stop at Virgin Gorda, the cruise line secured a section of the coastline at Fischer’s Cove for an exclusive beach party and barbecue, which included some great food, water sports, and sun time. This is another signature Windstar event that occurs every cruise and is a nice alternative to stopping at a cruise line’s “private island”.

Finally, our last stop was St. Barts. We should have booked a daytime excursion, but instead we just walked around the port area for a little while and headed back to the ship. We loved our evening sunset catamaran cruise excursion. The weather was beautiful, and the sunset was gorgeous. The entire experience, complete with snacks and a champagne toast, made the sail even more special. This was perhaps our favorite shore activity among a list of other great experiences.

The Ship – Windstar Cruises Wind Surf Cruise Review

Outdoor spaces.

The ship has a total of six decks, with decks 4, 5, and 6 offering outdoor areas. Like many cruise ships, there is a small pool and two whirlpools, three outdoor bars, and an outdoor dining area. There is also plenty of rail space with loungers and tables and chairs strategically located on both the port and starboard sides of the ship. Given the small nature of the vessel, the percentage of outdoor space is quite impressive, and there was never an issue finding a place to relax or soak up some sun.

windstar cruises ports of call

You are able to circle the entire ship on deck 5, walking right past and into the bridge. Yes, Windstar has an open bridge policy, which means you can stop in and say hi to the captain and view the navigational systems while at sea. This is pretty cool for the cruise nerd in all of us.

On a small luxury line, you would expect exceptional service. Luckily, Wind Surf truly delivered with personal and friendly services. After only a day or two, the staff will know your name, and more importantly, your preferred beverages at the bar! Throughout the ship, the crew always had a smile on their faces and seemed genuinely happy. While you do not have a dedicated dining staff, as Wind Surf has open seating restaurants, the service we received during meals was usually stellar. Our room attendant Ni Luh did a wonderful job taking care of our cabin over the course of the week.

Onboard Activities

Cruising with Windstar Cruises is really about the destinations. With a new port of call each day, sometimes even two ports of call in a day, the voyage is truly about the onshore experiences. With that being said, there were virtually no organized activities during the day. There were none of the typical cruise activities like trivia or bingo. There were only a few scheduled events like fitness classes, galley tours, and wine or rum tastings. So, we suggest taking a book or your Kindle along to keep you occupied while on the ship.

Exclusive to Windstar Cruises is the Marina. Located on deck 2 behind the spa, this water sports platform is open most days pending sea conditions. Here, you can jump off the back of the ship, take out a kayak, snorkel, jump on the water trampoline, or even wakeboard. So, if you are feeling adventurous, we suggest you definitely check out the Marina on Wind Surf.

windstar cruises ports of call

At night, there are a few entertainment options. Every evening James, the Destination’s Manager, hosts a port talk. It was less of a sales pitch for tours than the typical port talks on other ships. He provided information about the ports of call, as well as the tour options being sold by the cruise line. Many evenings, there were also special sail away events with passed drinks and appetizers.

Food and Dining

Overall, the food on Wind Surf was on par with what we have come to expect from cruise ship dining.

There were small bites available at the Yacht Club for breakfast and lunch which did not change much during the trip. We occasionally grabbed some continental breakfast items or some finger sandwiches for lunch. The coffee here was brewing all day! By the middle of the week, Russ, our “barista”, knew the Princess’ iced, skinny caramel latte order by heart. Now that’s service!

Yacht Club on Windstar Cruises

The Veranda on Deck 6 was a hybrid casual restaurant/buffet for breakfast and lunch. We enjoyed our meals here and found the food quality to be better than a typical buffet on other ships. The food selections here were limited, but they did change every day. You could help yourself to hot and cold buffet items and/or order off the menu. Selections off the menu included items like omelets, pancakes, and waffles for breakfast and hamburgers, paninis, and pizza for lunch. There was also a carving station located in the buffet at lunch time.

For dinner, the AmphorA restaurant was the main dining room with a different menu each evening. Open from 7 to 9 pm, the venue had an open seating arrangement with no set table assignments or reservations required. The food here was pretty typical of cruise ships. Likewise, there was also your traditional lobster night one evening of the cruise.

AmphorA Restaurant on Windstar Cruises Wind Surf

On one evening, Wind Surf offers the line’s signature barbecue deck party. This was some of the best food of the entire trip with a wide selection of premium options like paella, grilled lobster tail, and a roasted pig. It was a great event and certainly a dining experience that sets Windstar Cruises apart from contemporary cruise lines.

In addition to the MDR, there are two specialty restaurants. Both of these restaurants require reservations. You should make reservations as soon as you board the ship as they do book up quickly. Unlike contemporary cruise lines, these venues are included in the price of your cruise fare with no cover charges.

Stella Bistro is a French-inspired restaurant, while Candles is the outdoor Steakhouse. Located in the same outdoor space occupied by the Veranda restaurant during the day, Candles was our favorite of the two specialty restaurants.

Bars and Lounges

We could have easily completed our typical drink around the ship in a day on Wind Surf. Don’t worry, we didn’t try it. All bars served the same signature menu with a variety of cocktail options. There were also a few themed events like a Whiskey and Martini night.

Located near the pool, the Pool Bar was open from 9:30 am to 6 pm on most days. The Lounge is the hub of entertainment pre-dinner and post-dinner. A live band played here most evenings until about 11:30 pm.

The Lounge of Windstar Cruises Wind Surf

On Deck 5, the Compass Rose was an indoor/outdoor venue which opened in the mornings by 9:30 am and stayed open until about midnight. Offering great views and live music most evenings, this was one of the happening places on the ship.

There was also the Terrace Bar and Cigar Lounge with bar staff routinely around during the evenings to serve drinks.

We stayed in cabin 252, an AX Deluxe category stateroom. While the room was quite large in comparison to other contemporary cruise lines, it certainly showed signs of wear and tear. The ship is due for a four-week dry dock in a few months. Along with changes to some public venues, we hope the staterooms get some tidying up as well.

The décor in our stateroom was dated and tired with the carpet and fixtures showing their age. For a luxury cruise ship, we would expect more stylish and high-end furnishings. Even the technology was dated, with a small LCD television, a blu-ray player, and a Bose radio. Granted, we did not spend much time in the room but it did not live up to our expectations. During a Q&A session, the president of the cruise line did hint at advancements coming down the line for the brand as a whole.

Of note, there are also no balcony staterooms on Wind Surf. So, if you want that morning breeze or breakfast with a view, you will have to head to the outdoor decks.

Recap of Windstar Cruises Wind Surf Cruise Review

Sailing on a luxury yacht offered us the opportunity to spend several hours exploring ports of call that we usually do not get to visit on larger ships. However, it also meant that we needed to tender at most ports. With rough seas, this could be a challenge to those who are prone to motion sickness. Thankfully, this doesn’t impact us.

With a very visible set of officers and a crew to guest ratio of 1 to 1.5, we certainly felt pampered during the trip. There were also enough familiar cruise elements and venues that we did not feel completely out of our element on this smaller ship.

Pool Bar on Windstar Cruises Wind Surf

For those who have never cruised before, this ship will introduce you to the elements of cruising that we love. If you are concerned about sailing on the “monsters” (which Windstar staff affectionately calls the larger ships), these yachts would enable you to get closer to your destinations of interest while still experiencing a cruise vacation.

Wind Surf is entering a dry dock next month to undergo some maintenance, clean-up, and updates. The ship could certainly use some cosmetic work in the public venues and staterooms. She has a familiar layout and dedicated staff, so with some touch-ups and a few more entertainment options, we would consider another sailing.

The overall experience was engaging, relaxing, and enlightening. Visiting Barbuda and speaking with the locals gave us a new perspective on life in the Caribbean after the devastating hurricanes in 2017. During our trip, Windstar Cruises and Porthole Cruise donated funds to local schools to help during the recovery efforts.

While on our trip, president John Delaney detailed updates coming to the Star-class yachts. These include lengthening two of the ships and adding dining venues, an improved spa, and a revamped pool deck. We could certainly see ourselves cruising on one of these vessels when they re-enter the fleet.

Have you sailed on any ships in the Windstar Cruises’ fleet? Do you enjoy the small ship experience? Drop us an anchor below to share your reviews of these boutique vessels.

You kids are great. We love following your adventures and keep cruising as often as we can. We just disembarked from Celebrity Equinox on Saturday, March 2nd from a Western Caribbean Cruise and we are looking forward to refurbished Celebrity Summit in September, We saw a Windstar (in the distance) years ago while on a “Barefoot Cruise”. I won’t even begin to describe. Keep us up to date, We love to read your posts.

We are about to set sail this Saturday on our 4th Windstar cruise. We are celebrating our daughters 18th birthday….funny…took this same cruise to the Caribbean 18 years and 9 months ago. Bon Voyage!

We have sailed Windstar many times over the years and enjoy the sailing yachts the most. The pricing at Windstar have been climbing in our opinion at a faster rate then the level of satisfaction and Windstar is quickly becoming for us a rare choice given it’s failures to deliver on a Luxury Cruise. We have found that the larger Windstar Ships lacking in many area’s from the condition of the ship to the service. In Windstar defense we did find that some crew and the Ship Captain who sought us out for background on the problems we experienced was refreshing while the Hotel Director and Maintenance Folks we found were simply disinterested. We are scheduled again for a summer Spain trip on the Surf and are hopeful for a pleasant experience although our experience right now isn’t starting out well. We don’t have the inability to even log into MY WINDSTAR to complete registration and review excursions. We did submit an online request for assistance and 3 days later no response.

I sailed in the Surf repeatedly for years. Each & every crew member have always gone above & beyond to make the voyage enjoyable. I look forward to seeing the crew again after her new refurbishment & plan to sail again in 2020.

My Amazing First Sailing With Windstar

M y husband (Eddie) and I boarded the Windstar Legend in December 2021, shortly after cruise travel reopened from the pandemic. Here is what to expect on your first sailing with Windstar Cruises.

Knowing what to expect from a cruise is half the battle in planning a successful vacation. My family and I love cruising, so that narrows my choices to ocean or river, but there are many cruise lines to choose from. We have sailed with eight of them, so it was a real thrill adding cruise line number nine to our travels with a Caribbean cruise from St. Maarten.

The Windstar Sailing Vessels

You will either be cruising on an award-winning sailboat or all-suite yachts when you book with Windstar. Our cruise was aboard a yacht, the Windstar Legend, but we were side by side with the Wind Surf for embarkation and at one of the cruise ports.

The Star Legend holds slightly more than 300 guests. Our sailing was at 157 capacity, which meant we had the floating hotel basically all to ourselves. It was intimate enough to make some really great friends, but there were still people at disembarkation we had never seen.

Pre-Travel Overnight(s)

Since we were flying from Texas with a connection into St. Maarten, we came two days early. Or at least tried to. You can either make your own hotel arrangements or allow Windstar to book for you; we chose the latter.

Eddie and I touched down in St. Maarten around 3:30 PM, later then we anticipated. We had purchased transfers with the cruise line, which were null and void since our flight had to be changed, so we grabbed a cab to the hotel. Our lodging was at the  Hommage Hotel & Residences  in Marigot on the St. Martin French side of the island; the ride was 35 minutes with traffic.

The Hommage Hotel was heavily decorated with art installments, sculptures, murals, and stylish spaces, with an onsite restaurant that included a complimentary buffet-style breakfast. Our room was huge, with comfortable furnishings, nice linens, a wonderful bathroom, and was steps from the beach.

The cocktail bar and swimming pool were busy with guests during our stay. You could spend hours roaming the grounds and enjoying everything to look at.

For dinner, we took a taxi to Be Cool, a restaurant recommended by a friend. Prepare to spend two to three hours for dinner, as the service is European style, and they are incredibly short-staffed. It was delicious and not a bit overpriced.

The restaurant called us a taxi to get back to the hotel (5 USD per person) and ensured that the taxi driver came to the restaurant and physically escorted us to the cab.

The Windstar Cruises Arrival and Boarding Process

The following day, our shuttle was there to take us, plus a few other guests, to the ship. St. Maarten’s traffic was really hectic, being the holiday season, so the ride took 50 minutes. Our bus was very comfortable and air-conditioned, and the staff was helpful.

I failed to mention that the Windstar staff was set up in the hotel lobby and available to answer questions and make suggestions all evening and the morning of embarkation.

At the cruise terminal, we handed off our suitcases to be transferred to our stateroom, went through a scanning device, and showed appropriate ID and forms. We were steered into an area for the final boarding process, added a credit card to our account, and picked up stateroom cards.

Throughout the process, we were photographed and then taken in groups to the ship’s doctor, who conducted a free COVID nasal swab (December 2021, when it was still necessary).

Next, we learned about the alternative dining rooms on Windstar Legend and booked a meal time to dine at Cuatro 44 and Candles. The Windstar beverage program was explained to us, and interested guests signed up at that time.

The alcoholic beverage package has two levels, priced per day, per person, for the length of the cruise. I would recommend one of these packages for your first time sailing with Windstar, to enjoy your vacation to its fullest.

Unlike a few other cruise lines, guests in the same cabin do not have to package the same drink package. It is worth noting that coffee, tea, soda, and bottled water are complimentary on Windstar Cruises, and you do not need the drink package to enjoy them.

From start to finish, the check-in process took about 30 minutes.

Windstar Staterooms

Eddie and I stayed on deck six of the Windstar Legend. Our room was so spacious that I nearly did a double take. I’ve sailed more than 50 times and not once had a stateroom that could compare to this one. It was stylish and comfortable, and the design made great use of the space.

We had an incredibly comfortable king-sized bed, a flat-screen TV, a desk and dressing table area, and a couch with two chairs.

Eddie’s favorite part of the room was the Juliette-style balcony that allowed us to see outside, get fresh air, and get some great photos. Mine was the spacious bathroom with a double sink. The shower was fabulous, with rounded doors on a track and a high enough enclosure that the water did not slosh out.

Windstar uses L’Occitane toiletries, which gets a big thumbs up. There were also small shelves on the side and a cabinet that ran the length of the sinks for holding cosmetics, hair devices, sunscreen, and other necessities.

Our room also had a large walk-in closet, something I’d never had on a cruise ship. It was lighted, with shelving, hangers, robes, and an in-room safe. We had plenty of space to store our suitcases once we unpacked them.

And between the closet space, the shelves, and the three big drawers in the bedroom area, we were set.

Windstar’s Food

There is a reason cruise ships do not have scales in the bathroom. The food onboard was exceptional, and Windstar is the only cruise line endorsed by the James Beard Foundation . For breakfast, there are three choices to eat: room service, Veranda, and the Yacht Club, basically the coffee shop with limited food choices.

The Veranda (which transforms into Candles for dinner) is where you’ll find the buffet-style breakfast. It has a nice selection, a bit of everything, including five to six made-to-order dishes (pancakes, waffles, etc.), and a custom egg station. Veranda has indoor and outdoor seating. I loved the Eggs Benedict, cooked to perfection each time.

If you’d rather enjoy breakfast in the comfort of your room, call room service for a continental breakfast or bacon and eggs to be delivered at whatever time you choose. This is helpful on port days.

For a quick breakfast or lighter options (smoothies, yogurt, or fruit cups), The Yacht Club at the back of deck eight is where you’ll want to go. I highly encourage you to try all three at some point.

For lunch, you have the same choices only with the addition of the poolside bar, which is out by the deck 7 bar area. This is an order-from-a-menu option with quiche, burgers, and salads. You may want to treat yourself with a cone of ice cream afterward, beside the food bar.

Windstar Dinners

For dinner, all guests get a seating at Cuatro 44 ( Spanish tapas ), and Candles (the classic steakhouse), while the rest of your meals are in the main dining room. The food was great everywhere, but the main dining room was my favorite.

Expect dinner entrees like Grilled Bronzino, Moroccan Glazed Shrimp, Broiled Corn-Fed Veal Chop, and Roasted Lamb Rack. Side items included sautéed asparagus, Panko-coated onion rings, broccolini, and creamed spinach. For those with a hearty appetite, you may consider the 40 oz. Beef Bone-In Ribeye Tomahawk Steak .

As always, room service is always an option. We ordered room service once, chicken quesadillas for lunch, and they were great. The delivery was prompt, and it was an easy process to order.

Onboard Activities on My First Sailing with Windstar

Windstar delivers a daily newsletter to your stateroom to keep you abreast of the ship’s happenings. It includes the ports of call, a brief overview of the area, where the other Windstar yachts are on the same day, temperatures, sunset time, and what you can do around the ship throughout the day. Those activities might range from scavenger hunts and trivia to a daily lecture series which I especially liked.

One day we discussed travel, while another day, it was wildlife.

I spent a lot of my time at the pool and hanging out in the hot tub talking to other passengers. The spacious deck was nice for walking and napping. We loved the round lounge beds that allowed for a bit of privacy and protection from the sun.

Windstar’s Staff

If Windstar were a casino game, their friendly, energetic, and professional staff would be the grand prize. Windstar’s team sets them apart from the competition in ways I never knew existed. The yacht was beautiful, the food magnificent, and the ports of call exceptional, but I’m typically pleased with those things on every cruise.

The staff appears to be the reason that out of 157 cruisers; one couple had sailed with Windstar over 100 times, 4 (that I met) over 50 times, and several multiple times. Eddie and I were only two of the eight newbies aboard.

By day two, nearly every crew staff member we came in contact with knew our names. They always took time to speak or strike up a conversation and were at our beck and call within seconds. By day three, I think they learned everyone’s beverage preferences and worked tirelessly to keep things tidy and make us feel special.

Windstar’s crew has exemplified leaders of the hospitality industry, from the spa technicians to our waitstaff, room stewards to the Captain and officers.

One night towards the end of the cruise, the Windstar staff is responsible for the evening’s entertainment. Crew members sign up to dance, sing, showcase their talents, and make us laugh…and cry. This was a first for me and my favorite night of the cruise. I think everyone else agreed.

From Anda, our favorite servers, singing to a group of bartenders doing a synchronized swimming comic skit, I laughed until I cried. It was sensational, not to mention creating an even deeper bond between Windstar staff and guests.

If you’ve sailed with Windstar, you know the feeling that truly cannot be described but is welcomed with all sorts of feels.

Ports of Call

Our St. Maarten cruise itinerary had changed twice before boarding the ship. During a time with uncertain COVID numbers and different rules for each country, Windstar worked hard to ensure that the passengers were safe and had a great vacation but were not over-tested and made to incur additional expenses. I appreciated this greatly.

Even so, with the omission of Montserrat and St. Lucia cruise ports, we were COVID tested three times; to board, to fly home, and once because it was a BVI requirement.

Our cruise ended up sailing to St. Barthélemy (St. Bart’s), Antigua, and had three stops in the BVI: Tortola, Jost Van Dyke , and Virgin Gorda.

I highly recommend taking excursions with the cruise line, as they have provided the best of the best to lead your tour. But, if you’ve already been to the cruise ports, you may want to explore on your own, which we often do. Sometimes it is fun to just see what you can find with no agenda.

Our Port Excursions

We did an hour-long island tour In Gustavia, St. Bart’s (St. Barthélemy), then walked around the downtown area to see the mega-yachts. We did some shopping and saw where the rich and famous come to play and be seen. There are great photo ops along the harbor.

In Antigua, we strolled around, visited the historic St. John’s Cathedral, and had drinks at Hemingways Caribbean Cafe , something we always do there. The tropical fruit flan is pretty darned tasty, but this time I tried a perfect affogato.

Antigua’s beautiful church has seen much progress in its repairs and restoration since our last visit. The stained glass windows are stunning. If you are soda fountain drinkers like we are, here’s your chance—there’s a local McDonald’s nearby.

British Virgin Islands

In Soper’s Hole, Tortola, we took a five-hour island tour, which allowed us some time on our own. We shared a tasty chicken roti at a beach restaurant (Paradise Club Lounge, Bar, & Restaurant) while soaking up the incredible views.

In Jost Van Dyke, an area in the BVI we were unfamiliar with, there were only scuba diving excursions offered, which we did not want to do.

Instead, we paid $5 each to take an open-air vehicle to the back of the island for the best day ever. Soggy Dollar  is a World-Famous Beach Bar with a riveting DJ and music scene, great drinks (hello, Bushwhacker), food, and all the beach offerings you could ever want. The row of lounge chairs lining White Bay’s stunning beaches in each direction was the perfect place to hang out for the day.

Pro Tip: The Pain Killer drinks are all the rage. Pair it with the yummy Chicken Roti.

At Virgin Gorda, I couldn’t wait to take my husband to The Baths , something I’d done with my daughters years ago. We took an hour-long island tour and then had time to hike down to the beach at The Baths, soak up some sun, and then head back to the cruise pier.

Fun Fact: The Baths of Virgin Gorda is a National Park.

The landscape is fantastic at The Baths, and if you aren’t in excellent shape, there is a shortcut path to get you to the water’s edge quicker and easier. Don’t be afraid to take that route instead of the one with ladders, ropes, caves, and a very physically challenging landscape.

Grab a bite in the cafe at the top of the hill. They make excellent conch fritters and have a swimming pool and great picturesque views of the gorgeous island.

Windstar Cruise’s Special Amenities

Windstar has many exceptional amenities, but two were highly noteworthy. First is the water sports platform. I had no idea about this until I saw it on my stateroom TV video. Then, many guests who had done it on previous cruises were talking about it.

Windstar has water trampolines, inflatables, kayaks, paddle boards, windsurfers, snorkeling gear , and water skiing that they sometimes roll out of the ship aft for the guests to use at no additional charge. I saw the area where it was all housed, and while it sounded entertaining, the weather did not cooperate for us to use it.

The second is a luncheon beach barbecue. Keep in mind that we tendered to shore at four of the five ports of call (Antigua has a pier), meaning that smaller boats took us from the ship anchored in the ocean to the beach pier.

The tenders can hold 80 passengers comfortably, but due to only having 157 guests and many not getting off the boat at the earliest time, we could all fit in two quite easily.

On our day at Virgin Gorda, the Windstar crew and staff hauled our food, linens, plates, silverware, etc., to a beach where they set up a fantastic beach picnic. Even after the waves were too high for our usual docking area, Windstar persevered to ensure that the guests were treated to this unique offering.

A Feast Fit For A King

We enjoyed steel drum music as we dined seaside on a feast of ribs, sausages, jerk chicken, beef, plus sides of macaroni & cheese, corn on the cob, and baked beans, to name a few. There was fresh fruit, cake, and cookies for dessert.

Before all the guests were through the line, the rain rolled in and nearly crashed our party. Luckily, we were at a restaurant’s beach, so many of us took over the tables on the deck and inside the restaurant. The staff never faltered; they kept clearing dishes (real ones, not disposable), refilling drinks, and mopping up water just as quickly as it landed. I was in awe.

There is also, typically, a Windstar barbecue dinner, but ours was postponed due to high winds and then canceled the next day due to exuberant winds. December in the Caribbean was pretty brutal with the squalls and moody weather.

I think it is apparent that I loved my first sailing with Windstar Cruises. The attention to detail and high customer satisfaction are easily conveyed in everything they do. The size of the cruise is a tremendous asset, and the service level is another. The ship is attractive without being fussy, organized, well maintained, and aesthetically pleasing.

I cannot wait to see where else I will visit with Windstar Cruises.

Excellent service, amazing ports of call, tasty food, and a gorgeous ship are what you can expect on your first sailing with Windstar Cruises.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

Tortola is small in size, but huge in natural beauty. The island is capped with bold mountains and fringed with breathtaking beaches. The prime sites here are Cane Garden Bay and Sage Mountain National Park. Other options include snorkeling, diving and glass-bottom boat rides.

Windstar Cruises cancels Caribbean ports of call on reintroduction voyage aboard Star Breeze

CruiseMapper logo

The premium travel brand Windstar revealed that crew vaccination issues had forced the company to drop most of the Caribbean call ports on the post-pandemic reintroduction voyage of its Star Breeze ship .

Windstar plans to operate the June 19-26 voyage but on a modified itinerary that is due to include days at sea, offshore anchorages, and excursions in homeport Philipsburg (St Maarten Island, Dutch Antilles) , Windstar spokeswoman Sarah Scoltock said.

Windstar made the voyage free for all passengers who choose to take it, Scoltock added. It is the first for the company since it suspended sailings, as well as the first for Star Breeze since she was stretched in November 2020 to add 50 cabins .

According to Scoltock, Windstar had not been able to source enough COVID-19 vaccine for crew members in the Caribbean to meet the minimum standard set by some of the destinations.

All passengers on the voyage must have proof of inoculation.

The original itinerary included Anguilla Island UK (Sandy Ground) , Gustavia (St Barthelemy Island) , plus 4 stops in the BVI-British Virgin Islands.

Scoltock said that Windstar still hoped that it could call in at least one of the destinations.

My Favorite Excursion On A Windstar Cruise To The British Virgin Islands

  • Virgin Islands (British)

My husband and I vacationed in the stunning British Virgin Islands with Windstar Cruises for a week-long voyage featuring three ports of call. Two were new for us. We experienced picture-perfect beaches, tropical drinks, and the enchanting sound of steel drums as we explored this prestigious and beautiful tropical destination.

Experience the best of the Caribbean with a wide range of excursions the cruise lines offer. Or, if you prefer, venture out on your own to discover the highlights that best fit your needs. What sets this trip apart is the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the beauty of the British Virgin Islands for consecutive days. Instead of a fleeting visit, we had the chance to get to truly know this captivating country. Here are my favorite excursions to choose from while visiting the BVI ports of Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and Virgin Gorda.

I was hosted by Windstar Cruises on a familiarization trip to write this and other articles. Opinions are 100 percent mine and unbiased.

The beauty of the British Virgin Islands

Eddie and I went on a Windstar-sponsored excursion in Tortola . What I thought I signed up for (they canceled my first choice due to low interest) was an hour-long island tour, but what we got was around 4 hours. Not a problem, as we got to see a big chunk of this beautiful island. Scenic Drive & Beach, Soper’s Hole , and Cane Garden Bay Beach transfer were other Tortola options for day trips.

Experiencing the island via tour bus

We hopped aboard a vibrant pink, open-air bus and let a friendly and knowledgeable local guide show us the best sights. Our tour led us through picturesque towns filled with pastel-colored buildings, plenty of palm trees dotting the landscape, and charming boutiques. As we drove, we were treated to breathtaking views of majestic mountains adorned with houses and endless stretches of crystal-clear blue water as far as the eye could see.

Sailboats and yachts were plentiful, and a Disney cruise ship was also in port that day!

Brightly Covered Buildings In Tortola

One stop allowed us 40 minutes to see a popular market with brightly colored kiosks selling souvenirs and beach clothing in Road Town. I chose to seek out a local coffee shop, which did not disappoint. Island Roots on Main Street is delightful if you need caffeine, a pastry, cold-pressed juice, or a sandwich/salad break. I was there at Christmas, so I chose a yummy eggnog latte.

The next part of the tour was my favorite, with higher-up spots that made for incredible pictures. We also drove past a mural depicting the island’s history through about 20+ wall segments. Our best stop was Cane Garden Bay, where we had about 50 minutes to peruse the area. Eddie and I went to a beachfront cafe, Paradise Bar Restaurant & Club, ordered a tasty chicken roti sandwich, and soaked up the scenery. They were both perfect. We had a quick run-through of Callwood Rum Distillery on the way back to the ship, where no pictures were allowed, and a spot for buying conch shells. I would totally recommend this tour.

The world-famous White Bay Beach

Jost Van Dyke

I’m not sure I had even heard of Jost Van Dyke until it showed up on our Windstar cruise itinerary . Our schedule was changed a bit due to COVID, so it may or may not have been an original destination, but regardless, we loved it. There were two snorkeling excursions with the cruise line, which were pretty long. Since we had been in port day after day, we decided to chill and just get off the ship. Well, that wasn’t exactly how our day unfolded.

Jost Van Dyke is a tiny island named for an early Dutch settler and a former pirate, and also virtually crime-free, an excellent thing to note. There isn’t much going on other than water sports, sunbathing, anchored yachts, and enjoying the beach. We took the small tender boat from our ship in the harbor to a small pier where there was practically nothing but two or three taxi drivers. We hired one of them to take us to the big tourist attraction we had heard of, Soggy Dollar Bar, on the other side of the island at White Bay. For $5 each, we were on our way.

Funny how the things you didn’t plan on can end up being some of the best travel moments ever, which is what happened to us here. We were dressed for browsing boutiques and being in a town, not frolicking at a beach restaurant in the sand where the fun seemed endless. We rolled with the punches, took off our sneakers and socks, and did our best with what we had to work with. The sand was super soft, and Soggy Dollar Bar was a blast.

Fun Fact: Soggy Dollar Bar was voted #1 Caribbean Beach Bar by USA Today 10 Best Readers Choice 2020 .

Pocket sandwich at Jost Van Dyke

Palm trees allowed for several shaded spots, and there were seating groups for hanging out or eating in both sun and shade. Guests could rent umbrellas and lounge chairs that lined the magnificent beach. The water was unbelievably beautiful. The whole area of White Bay was like a pristine postcard. Soggy Dollar Bar had a nice mix of Bob Marley and country music blaring from the speakers, delicious tropical drinks , and the guests were having a fantastic time — a testament to this majorly fun and eco-conscious attraction.

Original Painkiller and Bushwacker drinks

Be sure to try the Original Painkiller drink, which is made with premium dark rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and orange juice, then finished with a touch of freshly grated nutmeg. It is so refreshing. We ended up having lunch at Soggy Dollar Bar and buying some souvenirs. Other restaurant offerings were pastries, ice cream, and a variety of coffee and espresso drinks.

Pro Tip: If you have access to the Google Play Store, you can get Soggy Dollar Radio , which has some awesome party tunes and tropical vibes. It is also available in the Apple App Store.

The Baths is a must when on Virgin Gorda.

Virgin Gorda

The BVI’s third-largest island, Virgin Gorda, was named that because Columbus thought the island resembled a lounging woman, or “fat virgin.” Probably the most famous part of the island is The Baths National Park , which is awe-inspiring and wonderfully photogenic. The Baths are a labyrinth of huge, rugged boulders that line the beachfront, causing swift seawater to come thrashing through the grottos. I’ve traveled the world, and The Baths is one of the most unique and stunning places of all.

My husband and I signed up for the excursion that included admission to the park and an open-air tram ride to and from The Baths, plus an island tour. Since I had been there years ago with our daughters, we skipped the strenuous Devil’s Bay path that winds down to the beach and through a cave system. There is still rocky terrain on the more leisurely Baths Trail, so if you are not in really good shape, I advise you to go the route I went on this day.

I will caution you, there are still several steep areas, and you are walking on and around big rocks and a very unnatural pathway. If you take your time and go at a slow pace, it should be fine for anyone without mobility issues.

The Baths at Virgin Gorda are a treat for your senses.

Once you are through the maze of winding pathways, you come face-to-face with the giant rocks that perhaps you’ve seen in magazines or movies. By taking this path, Eddie and I shared the beach with only four other people for at least 30 minutes, which was spectacular for getting good photos and ones without interruptions. We attempted to get in the water and swim a bit, but the current was powerful, and there were deep drop-offs. I was knocked down and tumbled a few times before rolling ashore. It was comical!

FYI: There are no lifeguards on duty here.

The key to not getting knocked down is going into the water straight on. If you turn your back on these waves, you will most likely get knocked down with this current. We saw it several times as visitors started making their way to the beach and not realizing the strength of the high surf. It feels heavenly, though, so try to get in, but be very cautious starting at knee-depth. I braced myself against one of the enormous rocks for support. And don’t let my warnings scare you; you might have calmer waters or other weather conditions. A few people out pretty far snorkeling on our visit, so it is possible.

Delicious conch fritters, a BVI tradition

Back at the park entrance is a collection of shops and a restaurant and sushi bar ( Top of the Baths ) with a swimming pool. We enjoyed some excellent conch fritters and a delicious pina colada while waiting for our tour group to finish.

Pro Tip: Do not attempt to take a camera in the water, as I would be willing to bet you won’t come out with it. There are rip currents to deal with, too.

What a disappointment to go to St. Thomas instead of Vieques.  Of course, the change is totally understood under the circumstances.  I wonder why they didn't go to Culebra instead.  My Star Legend cruise out of San Juan a few years ago went to Culebra, and it was beautiful.

Misty Morning

I believe the reason they replaced Culebra with Vieques is that the channel to get into the Culebra Port is quite narrow and subject to high winds and that the Windstar captains felt it was challenging to get in and out of so they decided to go to Vieques instead.  St Thomas is certainly a disappointing replacement.  We are on the Legend now and were on the ship when these events happened. While the Captain kept us informed on what was happening, it was positioned a breach of security onshore and it took a while to really find out what had happened (found out by going online) In the end no guests were near the pier when the events happened and the injured Windstar employee is expected to be back on the ship today

Am I correct in thinking that the St Thomas stops will be on Sundays?

Depending on your hours in port, this company runs a day trip to Culebrita from St Thomas. They also have trips to the taco boat anchored off St John. I am heading to the taco boat in about 10 days while I am on St Thomas for a vacation.

http://stthomasboattours.com/

We were also on board and thought the captain did a superb job in communicating the facts as he received them. He also reported on the condition of the crew member regularly and did his best to keep the situation calm. The day became more like a sea day with activities put together on the spur of the moment including a great cooking demo on top deck. We were on several years ago when tendering to Culebrita became an issue and went to St. Thomas.  Had a lovely day and did not feel like we missed out at all. So booked passengers will have to decide whether it's lemons or lemonade.  My feeling is anyone coming from winter freeze will go for the lemonade!

Or, given the wintry weather here in NY, perhaps a Hot Toddy!

Oh darn!  Seeing the bioluminescent bay at night has always been on my bucket list.  That is the first and only Windstar excursion I've booked for our upcoming Nov 30th sailing.  That is the main reason why I booked this cruise.  We did this similar cruise 2 years ago on the Pride, and when I saw Vieques added on this itinerary, I was excited to book this southern caribbean route to see the bioluminescent bay.

That's why I cruise Windstar - to go to the ports that the big ships don't and can't do......not to go to the same ports over and over, like St Thomas. Again.

Some additional info on this incident that I learned on Trip Advisor:

"The incident you reference was tragic and understandably of great concern for future tourists planning an upcoming visit. It is also very uncharacteristic. Yes, there is crime on the island, as there is everywhere. Violent crime like this is extremely rare in tourist areas such as the Malecon in   Esperanza . Residents and tourists alike were horrified by it. It was not a random act. The victim was targeted. It appears to have been in response to the victim destroying property belonging to the perpetrator. It was not directed at tourists. The perpetrator has been arrested, charged with a series of serious crimes, and being held on main island with very high bail. Since the incident, security has been heightened, with additional law enforcement officers brought in from main island to supplement local police. It was taken seriously. No one can predict the future, but I have been a frequent visitor to   Vieques   for almost 7 years. I do not feel unsafe there. I hate that this happened, particularly when this small   cruise   ship had just arrived. It's horrific no matter where or when it occurred, but the time and place could not have been worse. Having said that, I have no misgivings about returning to the island for future visits. I see this as an isolated tragic incident and nothing more. I was relieved to read that an arrest was made quickly. Our time on the island has always been marked by relaxing days at secluded beaches followed by peaceful nights."

In response to this poster above........

I hope that Windstar comes to the same conclusion........and that hopefully they will quickly reinstate Vieques as a stop. I'd still love to do kayaking at night in the bay. But I fear nothing will change before our departure at the end of November.

Yes,   Puerto Rico   knows where its bread is buttered with tourism business and the island cannot afford to scare tourists and   cruise   ships away with these types of crime incidents. In fact, I wish that the Puerto Rico law enforcement authorities would proactively outreach to the Windstar   Cruise  Line to reassure them of passenger safety on the island.

Ugh.  That is too bad for everyone involved.

We were looking forward to going there on our Feb cruise.  Hopefully, everyone will be comfortable with returning by then!

5,000+ Club

Sailing in January on Star Legend.  Just got email from Windstar that our itinerary will go to St. Thomas instead of Vieques.  I certainly understand the circumstances having read this thread. Would like to know where they will dock or tender.  It is a Sunday. What is open?

We are sailing on Star Pride in Feb.  Received the same email yesterday.  According to WS website, we will dock.  I assume it will be Crown Bay based on past experience, but have been unable to confirm.  The Ferry to Water Island runs hourly on Sunday, so that's our current plan for being away from the crowds.  There are several other smaller ships in port that day, with Celebrity Summit being the largest, so it shouldn't be too crowded, and shops should be open.  Any additional info would be appreciated.

We received the same information last week while sitting in St. Thomas.  Very disappointed at this point as it is the busiest port in the Caribbean and we booked the cruise solely for the smaller ports.  This plus the increase in tipping makes me not impressed with Windstar so far. Oh well, first world problems.

We are on Star Legend in a few days. I heard about the port change some time ago and noted that it took a bit of time for the information in the My Windstar website to catch up.  However, it now includes the St. Thomas stop.  Interestingly, unlike others, I did not  receive an email alerting me to the change.

  • 2 weeks later...

For the St Thomas port, they dock at Havensight.

Myself, my husband, 14yo daughter and my 78yo mother are heading on a cruise in Europe. It’s a very important cruise as one destination has been a lifelong dream for my mother, one she has never been able to fulfil however with losing my dad recently, I am doing all I can to fulfil this for her. Money is tight, so this is a huge feat for me to do this for everyone, but I can't risk not doing it for Mum.

Whilst I have paid for airfares to Italy and a cruise to the right destinations, I am hoping to utilise this phenomenal brain trust for private drivers that can meet us at the port and drive us to the main sites at each port.

The areas we are visiting are:

• Italy: Balongna, Ravenna, Messina, Rome, Florence

• France: Nice

• Spain: Barcelona

• Malta: Valletta

• Greece: Santorini, Mykonos, Athens

• Turkey: Ephesus

We fly into Balongna and then plan to catch the train to Ravenna. We will hand my daughter's birthday in Ravenna before embarking on our cruise . We are looking for things to do with a 14 yo in Ravenna. The things I have looked up, so far, aren't that great.

The main port is Florence. I need to get from the port to the Medici Castle Museum, then if we have time, to Pisa. I’m not sure if that is doable.

All other ports, we would like a driver that is reliable and that can run is to the main sites and back to the ship. Someone that won't try and rip us off. and someone that speaks English. We disembark in Athens. We have all day there before flying back that night, so would be keen for a driver to show us around, not we will have all our baggage.

If anyone has any experience or has driver contacts that you trust on those ports, I would be very grateful to you!

Thank you all, I appreciate any help.

I think you are asking far too many questions for anyone to answer for every port.

Thank you for your reply. I would be grateful for anyone responding to any one of the ports. I didn't want to flood the forum with a heap of singular questions.

I'd ask on the specific destination forums on here also.

Particularly about Ravenna - the local and frequent posters there can certainly help with suggestions for your daughter (I'd suggest including some things your daughter likes so they can make appropriate suggestions). Each destination has their own forum here and you'll find your answers there, specific to each locale
