The 13 Best Reed Diffusers of 2024

Surround yourself with subtle fragrance in a sleek, decorative package

travel reed diffuser

The Spruce / Amelia Manley

Convenient, safe, and long-lasting, a reed diffuser fills your space with subtly pleasant fragrance, all without the risks that come with lighting a traditional candle. Plus, they can last for weeks and require little to no maintenance. With scents ranging from calming lavender to musky sandalwood, you should be able to find a reed diffuser to match your scent preferences.

These sleek diffusers take up even less space than a candle (though some feature standout and stylish designs), pulling fragrant oils from glass bottles and dispersing them into the air via a small stick. You can even adjust the strength of the scent by adding or removing the reeds.

To help you find the best option for your space, we researched the best reed diffusers available, considering key details like fragrance and ingredients, diffuser size and design, and the lifespan of the scent when used.

Best Overall

Nest new york bamboo reed diffuser.

Nest is known for high-quality scented candles, and you can expect nothing less from the brand's reed diffuser. The set includes an etched glass jar reminiscent of a tiny flower vase, 5.9 ounces of fragrance oil, and eight chic black reed sticks. You can use all eight reeds at once for a more noticeable aroma or just a few for a subtler scent. The reed sticks soak up the oil, then release a continuous fragrance into your home for three months. You can also flip the sticks over every week or so to refresh the scent.

This top-shelf kit is available in 23 fragrances, so we’re confident you’ll be able to find one that suits your preferences. There's lemon-mint, apricot tea, Sicilian tangerine, grapefruit, birchwood pine, lemongrass-ginger, and Mediterranean fig—to name just a few. Many of the scents align with Nest's scented candles, soaps, and linen sprays , so you can use corresponding products throughout your home as needed. Although there's a lot to love about this reed-diffusing set, we wish its price was a bit more accessible.

Size: 5.9 ounces | Life Span: 3 months | Scent Options: 23

Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser

For something a bit more budget-friendly than our previous pick, check out the value-packed Cocod'or Reed Diffuser. It comes with a clear glass container, 6.7 ounces of fragrance oil, and five black reeds (not as many as others on this list). There's also a mini 1.6-ounce option if you prefer something smaller. You'll get dried flowers , too, which you can remove if they're not your style. However, we think it’s a charming addition that makes this reed diffuser a bit more decorative.

From garden lavender to vanilla sandalwood, you can choose from 12 different scents, each of which promises two months of pleasant aroma. Just note that you’ll have to wait a day or two for the sticks to soak in the scent. While some of the fragrances might smell a bit perfumey, the brand says they meet the International Fragrance Association (IRFA)  standards for safe, eco-friendly ingredients. The IRFA bans and restricts toxic materials and allergens to protect consumers, so you can feel confident when purchasing from manufacturers that comply with their guidelines.

Size: 3.5 ounces | Life span: 3–4 months | Scent Options:  6

Best for Bedrooms

Capri blue volcano signature reed oil diffuser.

When it comes to home fragrance, one of the most popular scents is Capri Blue’s Volcano–a deeply blue-hued glass candle that emits a wonderful tropical smell. Capri Blue has taken its much-loved fragrance beyond a traditional candle, though, and turned it into an easy-to-use reed oil diffuser that you can use without lighting a flame (or worrying about leaving it lit for hours).

Fans of Capri Blue note that this reed diffuser smells just like the original candle, and there are even additional fragrances to choose from if you’d like something a little different. With a strongly-scented hand-poured oil blend, you’ll be able to fill bedrooms both large and small with its great smell. This diffuser is particularly great for those looking to brighten up their bedroom with a scent that’s energizing and enticing.

Note that because of the strength of the scent throw, the fragrance won’t be subtle if you place it in a smaller bedroom. Overall, if it’s a familiar fragrance you want to bring right into your home, this potent diffuser delivers.

Size: 8 ounces | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options:  5

Best for Large Rooms

Dr. vranjes ambra diffuser + pack of white sticks.

If you plan on filling a spacious room with fragrance, you’ll want to opt for a diffuser with a more powerful fragrance. Although Dr. Vranjes’ Ambra Reed Diffuser comes at a higher price point, we think it’s worth it considering its long lifespan and strong scent throw.

This particular scent has strong notes of amber, patchouli, sandalwood, and vanilla for a sophisticated yet familiar fragrance. Each of the brand’s products is handcrafted in Florence, and the elegant glass bottle adds a charming touch to any space. You can either buy one large reed diffuser for your space or purchase a pack of three 0.3-ounce bottles to place in different corners of your large room.

Size: 0.3 ounces, 8.5 ounces, 16.9 ounces, 42.3 ounces | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options: One

Best for Home Office

Apotheke charcoal reed diffuser.

Apotheke's Charcoal Reed Diffuser is just the thing for your home office. This handsome all-black set comes with a matte bottle, 6.7 ounces of oil, and nine sticks (more than most). The full-bodied aroma is sophisticated, with a woody base, notes of smokey amber, and a hint of sweet, earthy oud.

This particular bundle is only available in one scent, but there are 10 other options on Amazon to choose from. Plus, they all last up to four months.

Size: 6.7 ounces | Life span: 3-4 months | Scent Options: 11

Best Long-Lasting

Voluspa reed diffuser.

If you want a reed diffuser that’ll deliver continuous fragrance without leaving you worrying about refilling on the regular, we love Voluspa’s Reed Diffuser. Available in a wide selection of different scents, you can customize how your space smells with options that are crisp and airy, like a blend of eucalyptus and sage, or vibrant and fruity, like persimmon. Best of all, each of Voluspa’s oil fragrance blends is designed to last anywhere from four to six months in total, giving you as much as a month or more in lifespan compared to the typical reed diffuser.

Additionally, we love that the fragrance blend itself is made without chemical additives. Each variety is free of phthalates, pesticides, parabens, and sulfates, and has never been tested on animals. Just keep in mind that the fragrances do vary; some are stronger than others, so it may take a little trial and error to find one that’s ideal for your preferences.

Size: 6 ounces | Life span: 4-6 months | Scent Options: Various

Best for Small Spaces

Floral street reed diffuser.

If you’re searching for a diffuser that’s well-sized for small spaces, the Floral Street Reed Diffuser is the perfect fit. With a bottle that holds just 3.4 ounces of essential oil, this diffuser can offer months of light fragrance without overwhelming smaller bedrooms, living rooms, and offices.

Plus, if you’re concerned about the ingredients inside the oil-based fragrance you’re breathing in, Floral Street only uses cruelty-free, vegan, and sustainably sourced ingredients. Each scent is made without additives like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, dyes, and pigments. Even the packaging and reeds are smartly selected, as they’re recyclable and FSC-certified.

Note that we like Floral Street’s reed diffuser for small spaces only—the smaller size of the glass bottle means this diffuser holds less oil, which makes it less potent (and even imperceptible) in large rooms or open areas. It also runs more expensive, but due to the high-quality oil and cruelty-free nature, it’s a worthwhile investment for those who want to prioritize top-tier and sustainable ingredients.

Size: 3.4 ounces | Life span: Up to 4 months | Scent Options: One

Best Design

Illume reed diffusers and sticks.

While most reed diffusers come in a simple glass bottle, the Illume Reed Diffuser offers a unique and artistic look that sets it apart from the rest. This decorative glass jar doesn’t blend in with the rest of your decor instead it makes a statement with its green color and triangular shape.

Note that this reed diffuser only comes in one scent: balsam and cedar. While this rich fragrance is notably reminiscent of the holidays, it’s a great choice for anyone who loves woodsy scents. It also has notes of oak moss, cinnamon, and eucalyptus, making it particularly warm and inviting.

Size: Not listed | Life span: Not listed | Scent Options: One

Best for Everyday

Cocorrína reed diffuser.

If you’re using your reed diffuser day in and day out, you’ll want to pick one that’s value-packed and long-lasting. The Cocorrina Reed Diffuser ticks both of these boxes, and we’re confident that it’ll upgrade your daily lifestyle. Choose from 11 agreeable scents like lemon lavender and ocean breeze to impart lasting fragrance to your space. It offers a lot of bang for your buck considering its size and lifespan, so you won’t have to break the bank every time you need a refill.

We love the simple glass bottle, which matches nicely in any space. The reed diffuser set also comes with 6.8 ounces of oil (which lasts around three months) as well as eight cotton sticks to release the fragrance. The scent throw is present but not overwhelming, making it a great choice to use every day.

Size: 6.8 ounces | Life span: 3 months | Scent Options: 11

Best for Stress Relief

There are 24 scent options to choose from, so there’s no shortage of options no matter your preferences.

This reed diffuser set comes with eight reeds and 3.5 ounces of oil, which can last for over three months. Sweet Water Decor is a small woman-owned business based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and all of its products are handmade. Plus, the fragrances are free of lead and phthalates.

Size: 3.5 ounces | Life span: 3+ months | Scent Options: 24

Our best overall reed diffuser is the Nest New York Bamboo Reed Diffuser , which offers a thoughtful design and long-lasting fragrance. We also recommend the Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser ( best value ), which is available in 12 pleasant scents and even comes with dried flowers for a decorative touch.

What to Look for When Buying a Reed Diffuser

When choosing a reed diffuser, you’ll want to consider the size of both the bottle (or diffuser) and the reeds (which work to bring the fragrance into your space). There’s no “right” size for a reed diffuser; it’s entirely up to you, and how strong you’d like the diffuser’s fragrance to be.

Larger diffusers with longer reeds, as well as more reeds per bottle, tend to offer longer scent lifespans and deliver a stronger scent throughout your space. The bigger the bottle, the more fragrance oil a reed diffuser can hold and disperse. Similarly, the more reeds you use–and the longer they are–the more reach the fragrance will have. If you’re looking for a reed diffuser with a strong scent throw and long lifespan, we recommend Dr. Vranjes’ Ambra Reed Diffuser ( best for large rooms ).

Ingredients

The fragrances and oil blends used in your typical reed diffuser aren’t any different from what you’d use with an electric diffuser. They’re basic (and highly fragrant) essential oils. While most retailers that offer reed diffusers will also sell different essential oils and oil blends designed to be used with the diffuser, you can also choose to purchase these separately.

In any case, you want to look for oils that are made with high-quality ingredients. Some can be made with alcohol and additives like parabens and phthalates, and we recommend looking for oils that don’t contain these. Instead, use oils that are certified USDA organic rather than synthetic fragrances. Some reed diffusers, like our best value Cocod'or Flower Reed Diffuser , also meet the International Fragrance Association standards, which ensure safe ingredients.

Choosing the fragrance your reed diffuser gives off is easy, but it’s an important consideration. Some fragrance oils are stronger than others, offering more potent scents. While some people may want a strong fragrance, others may want something lighter and more subtle. So, how do you choose? Think about the space you’ll be using your reed diffuser in and how you’d like to feel. Scents set the mood–for example, a soothing fragrance like lavender can calm the mind and help instill relaxation. Alternatively, citrus can be refreshing, bright, and energizing.

From calming florals and romantic musks to energizing citrus and earthy blends, there's a scent for every mood. If you’re looking for a reed diffuser with a wide variety of fragrance options, our best overall Nest New York Bamboo Reed Diffuser is available in 23 rich and well-rounded scents.

Different reed diffusers offer different lifespans, or lengths of time they emit fragrance. While these diffusers are pretty hands-off in terms of maintenance and use, they do eventually weaken in fragrance and use up all of their scented essential oils. In general, to extend the lifespan, you’ll want to flip the reeds over once each week.

After about three months, the fragrance will have dissipated completely. However, depending on the size of the diffuser bottle, how much oil it contains, and the size or length of your reeds, you may be able to get another few weeks out of your particular diffuser. Our best long-lasting pick is the Voluspa Reed Diffuser , which has a particularly impressive lifespan of four to six months.

It’s always a good idea to consider what kinds of refills you’ll need to use with any particular reed diffuser. Look into the refill options for whatever diffuser brand you’re considering, and take note of the size of the refills and how cost-effective it is to purchase them—especially if you plan to use your diffuser every day.

Reed diffusers typically last anywhere from two to six months. The scent life span depends on a few factors, including the potency of the fragrance, the size and shape of the bottle, how much oil is used, and how many sticks are placed inside. Flipping the reeds periodically can help prevent the aroma from fading.

"High-traffic areas work great so that the aromas can move through the space," says Forehand, noting that placing it near a door, open window, or air vent can dilute the scent. Since reed diffusers generally don't have very large coverage areas, they're also often ideal for smaller areas, like bathrooms, bedrooms, and home offices.

That being said, you’re still able to find more potent options that have a strong enough scent to fill large rooms as well. For even more scent coverage, we also recommend placing multiple reed diffusers in different corners of your space.

Take Our Word for It

Real Simple / Eric Brockob

Reed diffusers are an easy, flame-free way to make your home smell good . They’re very long-lasting, as they can remain fragrant for months of use, and we love that you can adjust the strength of the scent by adding, removing, and flipping the reeds.

To come up with this list of the best reed diffusers, we researched dozens of options while considering factors like lifespan, scent, vessel style, and price point. We also spoke to fragrance expert Eduardo Valadez, director of marketing at Diptyque, for tips on what to look for in a reed diffuser, as well as how to properly care for one.

According to Valadez, the best reed diffusers come in vessels that can be refilled. This means you’d only need to purchase more oil and new reeds when your diffuser runs out, rather than an entirely new set.

Keep reading to check out our favorite reed diffusers to fill your home with long-lasting fragrance, with options for every scent preference.

Linnea Cashmere Diffuser

The diffuser casts a luxe scent at a good price.

Warm and subtle, this diffuser is good for just about any room in your home. It gets bonus points for its packaging: The included outer bag is perfect for gifting, while the greige bottle itself is pretty (and versatile) enough to be left out on a shelf or coffee table.

Size : 6 ounces | Lifespan : Not listed | Material : Glass, rattan

Neom Happiness Reed Diffuser

It's designed to lift your mood through a mix of oils and scents.

Some think the fragrance can smell a bit fake.

Scents have the power to subtly change your mood ( lavender is calming , for instance), and this line of diffusers was designed specifically to make you happier through a mix of different oils and scents. It has notes of mimosa flower, which is a bit powdery, as well as neroli and lemon for a citrusy zip of freshness. Harlem Candle Co. Speakeasy Diffuser

Harlem Candle Co.

The warm and spicy scent conjures up speakeasy vibes.

It's not intended for those who favor sweet fragrances.

With notes of palo santo and bourbon, this diffuser is meant to conjure up the feeling of being in a speakeasy. It also has hints of dark chocolate and plum blossom to round out the woody, earthy scent. The glass apothecary-style bottle matches the speakeasy vibe, making it a great choice for a bar area, living room, or even a bathroom. We also like that the label is high-quality and more of plaque rather than just a sticker, which means that even after the diffuser is done you could easily reuse the bottle and keep it on display.

Size : 8 ounces | Lifespan : 6–8 months | Material : Glass, rattan

Brooklyn Candle Studio Reed Diffuser

Brooklyn Candle Studio

The subtle, cleanly designed diffuser casts a fresh and lightly floral scent.

The scent might be too light for those used to richer, warm scents.

If you’re looking for a subtle, cleanly designed diffuser that won’t draw any attention, this one from Brooklyn Candle Studio is a great option because it’ll blend right in with any style of decor. This scent, which smells like a freshly picked bunch of wildflowers, mixes notes of jasmine, lavender, and mandarin for a fresh, lightly floral, slightly citrus fragrance. Herbaceous and woodsy, the Canvas scent is spring-like, fresh, and suitable for any room in your home. It won’t overpower a small bedroom or bathroom, and it also works in larger rooms as long as you aren’t looking for a super-strong scented diffuser.

Bridgewater Candle Company

The fragrance is well-rounded, featuring sweet sparkling tea and passion fruit notes grounded by a strong patchouli note.

The scent is not designed to last very long.

This beautiful scent from the Bridgewater Candle Company is grounded by a strong patchouli note, but you’ll also get some sweetness from the sparkling tea and passion fruit notes. If you want a long-lasting, powerhouse reed diffuser, bear in mind that this diffuser only has a lifespan of about one month. That said, the brand touts that its fiber reeds will give twice the fragrance of rattan sticks without requiring any flipping, so you can expect a decent throw.

LAFCO Feu de Bois Signature Reed Diffuser

It’s a tried-and-true bestseller for those who love woodsy and cozy scents.

LAFCO’s best-selling Feu de Bois Signature Reed Diffuser will transport you to a cozy campfire as woodsy notes of fresh pine, sandalwood, and Virginian cedarwood join classic leather accords and smoky frankincense. While the scent might sound intense, it’s actually somewhat subtle, so those sensitive to heavy scents likely won’t find it too overpowering. If you love this warm fragrance, you can also browse LAFCO’s body care and home candle collections to get more of the Feu de Bois line to compliment this diffuser.

How to Shop for Reed Diffusers

The size of a diffuser should be taken into consideration before committing to a purchase. For example, a large 12-ounce reed diffuser might make more sense for a spacious living room coffee table than a small bathroom sink. Vessel size also matters since your reed diffuser’s throw can be determined by its volume. Generally speaking, the more fragrance oil you have, the stronger your throw will be. Therefore, small reed diffusers are great for smaller rooms to prevent the fragrance from becoming overwhelming.

Reed size is important, too. Many brands recommend using reeds twice as tall as the diffuser vessel for an aesthetically balanced setup that doesn’t look too top heavy. When it comes to scent, reed thickness can also play a part in scent throw. Thicker reeds can hold more fragrance and produce stronger scents, but this also means they use up oil more quickly.

Formula

When shopping for a quality reed diffuser, take a close look at the ingredients and how much natural fragrance is in the formula. Many formulas consist of essential oils and perfume-grade fragrance oils. Essential oils are naturally derived from plants, and fragrance oils typically contain synthetic elements. If you have any sensitivities to or concerns regarding synthetic ingredients, it’s best to always review a diffuser’s oil formula before purchasing it.

Additionally, you may want to look into a reed’s material, in which rattan, bamboo, and fiber rods are the most common options. If you prefer a natural reed, keep in mind that rattan sticks will perform better than bamboo ones. On a structural level, rattan sticks feature clear channels, so they distribute scent more evenly and smoothly than bamboo rods, which feature nodes that can make them prone to clogging. Some companies also use fiber reeds (often synthetic), which may be less prone to clogging but may absorb oil quickly.

Alternatively, you can DIY your own reed diffuser if you want to something a little more personal. Using this method, you can add your favorite essential oils to a base oil like safflower or sweet almond oil. Just make sure that you have a vessel to hold your fragrance and a pack of reed sticks to disperse your scent.

Reed diffuser oils come in a wide range of fragrances, and the best one for you depends on the mood you’re trying to set for your space. If you’re partial to a sweet, comforting scent, consider a gourmand fragrance with notes such as vanilla. For coziness that's not too sweet, woody notes such as sandalwood and cedar can be fresh and grounding (woody notes tend to last longer, too). Herbal scents, such as lavender and chamomile, are also great for cultivating a calm space. If you want to channel a bright and uplifting mood, consider a reed diffuser with citrus notes.

According to Valadez, “reed diffusers are a great alternative [to candles] because the reeds slowly distribute the scented oil, allowing for a longer lifespan without much maintenance from the user.” However, a reed diffuser’s longevity is dependent on how much oil is in the diffuser, the quality of the oil, and how often you flip over the reeds. Flipping over the reeds every couple of weeks makes the scent stronger but also means the oil dissipates quicker.

Many brands will tell you how many months the reed diffuser is expected to last. As a rule of thumb though, larger diffusers tend to last up to a year, while smaller ones typically last only a few weeks. On average, a 3.38-ounce or 100 ml reed diffuser should last at least a month. However, if you have a high quality diffuser in the 3- to 6-ounce range, you can expect it to last around three to four months.

Most reed diffusers are refillable, but not every brand sells refills separate from the vessel they come in. To be more eco-friendly, look for brands that sell refills so you don’t have to keep buying entirely new bottles. Some reed diffusers even come in chic vessels that can be  repurposed like candle jars .

Questions You Might Ask

How do reed diffusers work.

Reeds are traditionally made with natural rattan, which has tiny pores that soak up the oil from the diffuser. Once the oil reaches the exposed part of the reed (the part that sticks up out of the vessel), the oil evaporates and is dispersed into the air, adding fragrance to your home.

How can I make my reed diffuser smell stronger?

“When first using a reed diffuser, let the reeds soak in the perfumed concentrate for a few hours, then place them into the vessel, turning them over to begin diffusing the fragrance to ensure a strong initial scent,” Valadez says. “To make your reed diffuser scent stronger, you can add additional reeds, and be sure to flip your reeds regularly.” You should also replace the reeds whenever you refill the oil.

What are the benefits of reed diffusers?

Reed diffusers have several benefits, with the main one being that they usually last two or more months of continuous use, with little to no maintenance. Unlike candles, you can adjust the strength of a reed diffuser’s scent by removing or adding reeds. And since there aren’t any flames involved, they’re generally safer than candles, too—just make sure you keep them away from kids and pets. Also be careful to avoid spilling them on furniture and clothes, as some oils may stain .

How we test reed diffusers

The best reed diffusers as reviewed by Annie in her bedroom on her chest of drawers with plant beside them

I have been testing home fragrances for years in my two-bedroom apartment that, as you can imagine, smells like a total dream. I always move them from room to room, and like to use them until they are half empty before making my mind up.

A couple of reed diffusers in this guide have been recommended by members of the Real Homes team. I warned my colleagues not to place the reed diffuser next to a heat source such as a radiator or a heater, as this can cause the oil to evaporate quicker than normal. But otherwise, I made sure that the process of how we test was as standardized as possible.

What to consider when choosing a reed diffuser

1. Is it refillable? With candles, once they’re gone — they’re gone. Not so with reed diffusers, which can be topped up with new fragrance oil. When you buy a diffuser refill, discard old reeds — they’ll be saturated with the scent from the first oil — and use new ones.

When refilling, you don't need to pour all the oil into the vessel. Instead, fill it to about two-thirds or three-quarters full. This allows for proper absorption by the reeds. Adding too much oil can oversaturate the reeds, leading to a strong smell that may be overpowering. Thicker reeds can absorb and release more fragrance, leading to stronger smell. However, the effectiveness of this can depend on the shape and size of the room.

The lifespan of your reed diffuser will vary based on factors such as the size of the bottle and the amount of oil used. Normally, an average reed diffuser can last anywhere from several weeks to a few months. However, factors like room temperature, ventilation, and the number of reeds can influence how quickly the oil evaporates.

2. Think about scents you normally like Florals are fairly self-explanatory, though some of them get a bad rap for being too strong. Consider something from the woody or spicy families, or on the other end of the spectrum, a fresher, "greener" scent. Alternatively, if you're feeling stressed or anxious, you may benefit from picking an aromatherapeutic reed diffuser. Scents containing sage and rosemary can offer focus and clarity when dotted around the home, and lavender is known to be particularly calming if you're having trouble relaxing or sleeping. On the contrary, zingy citrusy scents can be energizing if you need a little pick-me-up. Peppermint has a similar uplifting effect.

3. Check its size The larger the diffuser — the longer it will last. And don't forget, the more reeds in the fragrance, the quicker it will empty. Plus, the more often you flip the reeds the quicker the fragrance will need to be refilled or replaced, too. It's worth bearing this in mind when looking at the price of a reed diffuser — when will you next need to pay to refill or replace it?

4. Consider its design Buy a reed diffuser that fits with your home decor, because it may have to be placed in the center of a room. Also, be sure to check if its vessel is recyclable after use, and if not, then you might want to ensure refills are available so you won't have to throw away the whole vessel. Most reed diffusers are eco-friendly as they are made using glass and bamboo wooden sticks.

5. Does it come as a candle or a room spray too? If you like your home to smell the same throughout, check whether the reed diffuser you have picked comes as a candle , wax melt, air freshener , or room spray, too. This might appeal if you live in an open-plan or small apartment and don't want different scents to merge. However, some people call it scent layering!

Are reed diffusers better than plug-ins?

Reed diffusers don't require electricity to run, whereas plug-in fragrances do. So, in terms of energy efficiency — reed diffusers are better.

How can I make my reed diffuser last longer?

Don't flip your reeds as frequently. Once a month is sufficient, and if you live in a smaller space, you won't need to flip them at all. You can also put a stopper in the reed diffuser if you're happy with the strength of the scent in the room.

If you haven't kept the stopper from your reed diffuser, you could use a shop-bought set instead, such as these Feel Fragrance Glass Diffuser Jars on Amazon .

Sage adds a herbal, woody note, while lavender brings a bit of sweetness.

Eucalyptus Fragrance Experience

Eucalyptus Oil

This oil, obtained from the leaves of the eucalyptus tree, is known for its strong antiseptic and healing effect. Its fresh, aromatic fragrance is stimulating and cleansing for the senses.

A native of Southeast Asia made famous in Thai and Vietnamese cooking, lemongrass is a tropical grass with bright bluish-green leaves. Its essential oil is extracted through steam distillation, releasing a lemony flavor for which it is named.

Paraguay is home to the largest production of petitgrain oils, which are steam distilled from leaves of the bitter orange tree. Its citrusy fragrance is strong and bitter-sweet, with floral and woody nuances.

Named for Bergamo, the Southern Italy city in which it flourishes, this citrus is a cross between pear, lemon and Seville orange. Expressed from the ripe peel, its essential oil imparts a fruity sweetness in fragrances and flavorings, including that of Earl Grey tea.

A tree that thrives in cold boreal climates, fir is identified by its needlelike leaves, gray-green bark and cylindrical cones. Extracted through the leaves, its refreshing essential oil emits a lush, resinous scent that balances sweet and balsamic.

Eucalyptus is a Fresh Fragrance

A transformative moment to energize and awaken your senses, this fresh, lively fragrance infuses your day with unlimited possibility. Invigorating eucalyptus oil. Crisp Italian lemon. Energizing petitgrain. Sweet bergamot. Lively lemongrass. Lush fir.

My Home Smells Like a 5-star Resort Thanks to This $17 Ritz-Carlton Hotel-inspired Diffuser Set From Amazon

It’s a fan-favorite for a reason.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

One reason I love staying at five-star hotels? They always smell so good. Unfortunately, I can’t afford to pull an Eloise and live at the Plaza Hotel, or if I had my druthers, The Ritz-Carlton Maldives . Fortunately, I can afford this Pristine Ritz-Carlton-inspired Reed Diffuser Set I found at Amazon that starts at just $17 for 1.69 ounces. It doesn’t physically turn my 1,200-square-foot home into a fancy five-star hotel, but it sure makes it smell like one.

Pristine, the maker of this reed diffuser set, can actually make my home smell like four different five-star properties from around the world. Their hotel-inspired collection includes Maldives Villa inspired by Marriott , Swiss Château inspired by Hilton , Japanese Ryokan by Shangri-La , and English Country Inn inspired by Ritz-Carlton . Currently, they’re available in two sizes, 1.69-ounce and 6-ounce, and price varies slightly by scent.

Pristine English Country Inn Reed Diffuser Set

For the last two weeks, I’ve been loving the English Country Inn. When I opened it, the first thing I noticed was that the scent wasn’t overpowering the way pure essential oils are. It simply smelled pleasant — the perfect amount of pleasant. While I’m no parfumier, I’d say the scent is an elegant blend of strawberry meets vanilla meets earth. Basically, I don’t know how they did it, but Pristine somehow managed to marry an English country inn with a Ritz-Carlton and bottle it.

The diffuser set came with five reeds, and within hours of putting the reeds in the oil, my home went from smelling like my wet, 110-pound Leonberger (basically a St. Bernard) to smelling like the kind of place where the royal family would stay if they wanted to get away. In fact, my neighbor dropped by recently, and before she even said “hi,” she asked what smelled so good. (Don’t get me wrong; I want my house to smell nice, but not so nice that she drops by every day.)

Travel + Leisure / Katie Jackson

I told her it was my new diffuser set, despite the fact that it was already a few weeks old. Judging by how much oil is left in the jar, I reckon I have at least another six weeks before I need a refill. Currently, I use one diffuser per floor, and each floor in my house is around 600 square feet. The scent permeates the room but doesn’t seem to saturate the air and weigh it down the way cheap plug-in air fresheners do. It’s noticeable, yet subtle at the same time. In other words, it doesn’t hit you in the face; it gently hugs you.

Sometimes when I open the front door and get a whiff of the living room, I actually do a double take and wonder if I’m really home. “This literally smells like the Ritz lobby,” writes one shopper who sums up my sentiments rather perfectly. They gave it a five-star review. This diffuser set even has more than 600 perfect five-star ratings.

Pristine Maldives Villa Reed Diffuser Set

Another happy shopper whose review is titled “ Perfection ” said that before the pandemic, they often stayed at a Shangri-La in Hong Kong. Now they’re thrilled they don’t have to endure a 17-hour flight to smell their beloved hotel. “The scent is spot on to the hotel’s signature scent,” they write. “Joy! It’s the little things in life.” Another happy shopper says it transports them to a “Marriott spa experience.”

Now, I look forward to the day when someone figures out how to bottle a massage or facial. But in the meantime, I’m quite content with my Pristine Ritz-Carlton-inspired Reed Diffuser Set .

How to Make a Homemade Reed Diffuser That'll Fill Your House With a Scent You Love

Get creative by mixing different essential oils until you master the perfect blend.

Candles are great and all, but they can be a pretty serious fire hazard if they're not handled with care. Reed diffusers, on the other hand, don't require any flames, plugs, or batteries. Their downfall: Some reed diffusers come with a hefty price tag, and many have an artificial scent. And while many top brands have a large range of vessel styles and oil aromas, buying store-bought reed diffusers can be rather limiting.

First things first: Stock up on all the supplies you need to DIY a reed diffuser. When it comes to picking a glass or ceramic vase, opt for one that has a narrow opening at the top, which slows down evaporation. Most importantly, pick the right kind of oil to use as a base. Mineral oils like sweet almond oil or safflower oil tend to be the most popular because they're thin enough to travel up the diffuser reeds (or bamboo skewers!), allowing your room to quickly fill with the scent of your choice. The rest is your call: pick from an assortment of essential oils to infuse your space with scents that fit the mood or season.

  • Pour sweet almond oil or safflower oil in 1/2 cup increments into the ceramic or glass vase.
  • Add 30 - 50 drops of essential oils per 1/2 cup of base oil. Remember: Some essential oils can be harmful to pets , so do your research before you add them.
  • Give the vase a good shake or stir to mix oils.
  • Stick in 5 - 8 reed diffuser sticks. You can also cut off the pointed ends of bamboo skewers, if you have extras on hand. Flip the reeds or skewers after one hour or when half-saturated.
  • For a stronger scent, flip reeds once every week and replace the oil mixture once a month.

Traveling with Diffusers: Can You Take A Reed Diffuser On A Plane?

Traveling with Diffusers: Can You Take A Reed Diffuser On A Plane?

When you are traveling, your hand luggage is subject to strict perusal when going through airport security. And many items such as sharp objects or liquids above 100ml are not allowed into the cabin.

They also limit the number of toiletries such as perfume and makeup. Also, some perfumes are strictly not prohibited.

Essential oils are beneficial as they can be used as an alternative treatment for various ailments. And if you are traveling, you’d be relieved to learn that you can travel with your Reed Diffuser , but the rules differ from airline to airline.

So, if you are traveling with a Reed diffuser, familiarize yourself with the 3-1-1 TSA liquid rule to avoid delays and loss of items because you can only throw away anything prohibited on the plane.

This article explains what a Reed diffuser is, how to package it with your essential oils, and how you should adhere to the TSA liquid rules.

What is a Reed Diffuser?

3-1-1 tsa liquid rules, 1. choose a suitable storage bag/container, 2. narrow down your reed diffuser, 3. clearly label the reed diffuser bottles, 4. seal the reed diffuser jars properly, how to get through airport security, what are the best essential oils to use with your reed diffuser when traveling, what are some of the travel etiquettes with essential oils, final thoughts.

Right now, Reed diffusers are trending and are primarily being used for home fragrancing. A Reed Diffuser is a glass jar or glass bottle filled with scented oil. It also has sticks known as rattans, which you insert into the glass jar.

What is a Reed Diffuser

Each rattan has about 20 channels that run its entire length. They function much like straws as they suck the oil to the top of the rattans. And the fragrance is emitted into the air through evaporation, leaving your home smelling great.

Reed diffusers are the best substitute for candles as they do not require heat to release fragrances into the air, as it’s a natural occurrence. Reed diffusers are eco-friendly, long last lasting and slow emitting.

They are safe for adding beautiful fragrances to a room because they are flame-free, making them perfect for use in a home, office, plane, and even classroom.

If you are traveling with the U.S, You must make it a point to educate yourself about the TSA liquid rules. These rules ensure that you do not carry excess liquid than what is allowed on the plane. The rules are classified in the following manner:

  • 3: You should carry liquid in bottles that are lesser than 3.4 ounces or 100ml
  • 1: You should carry your liquids in a 1 plastic quart-sized bag
  • 1: You are only permitted to carry 1 bag

The rule protects passengers by ensuring that all liquids in their hand luggage are reachable and easily accessible. When you place your liquid in a plastic bag, this gives the TSA agents an easy time inspecting your luggage to determine whether you adhere to the regulations.

3-1-1 TSA Liquid Rules

Thus, helping speed up, the security line check stops.

Always ensure that all your oils are legal because airports are part of federal law zones; your state laws don’t necessarily apply. So, do your research about which oils are legal and not to ensure that you are not violating any federal laws.

Besides, if you are not sure about the oil’s legal status in your Reed Diffuser, ask the right authorities before flying.

How to Properly Pack Your Reed Diffuser and Essentials Oils For a Flight

The TSA liquid rule stipulates that you place your liquid bottles in a plastic bag. So, do not place them in an opaque bag with a magnetic clasp as it will trigger the sensor. Always use bags that follow the TSA rules, or you might get pulled aside, which might make you miss your flight.

You can also use a Ziploc bag found in your kitchen or go to your local container store and buy a plastic, clear, and quart-sized bag with a zipper.

Some people have a collection of Reed Diffusers and essential oils, and it’s tempting to pack all of them, but don’t. Because anything can happen, you might misplace your bag, or they might get lost, and replacing them will be costly.

How to Properly Pack Your Reed Diffuser and Essentials Oils For a Flight

Essential oils have multiple uses, so only bring at most two that have numerous beneficial properties to avoid bringing each one. If it’s only for scent, pack two of your favorite.

If you carry two diffusers, ensure that you have different rattans for each because rattans cannot be used interchangeably. This is because the rattans used for peppermint oil cannot be used for lemongrass. Why? Because the rattans have absorbed the specific oil and mixing them can be produced unfavorable scents.

This is the most straightforward rule to abide by and most important as it helps the TSA agents at the airport screening your luggage faster if everything in your quart-sized bags is labeled.

If you make your own oil to use in the diffuser, kindly put them in cobalt blue glass jars and label them clearly using a sticker. If the Reed diffuser jars are not marked, even if you explain what they are, it will be challenging for the TSA agent to take your word for it, and you will be forced to discard off your jars.

You don’t want your oil to leak into your bags because everything will be contaminated. Therefore, ensure that you have sealed all your Reed diffuser jars properly before packing them.

And if the TSA agent removed and checked them during security check, ensure that your lids are sealed tightly by twisting the caps before placing them back in the quart-sized bag.

Ensure that you adhere to the 3-1-1 TSA liquid rules when packing your Reed diffuser before going to the airport. And during security check, take out everything to be screened and ensure that you place everything in a separate bin, especially the liquids bags.

Alternatively, you can place the transparent bag on top of your belongings. Do not hide them under your clothing in the suitcase because you will be forced to disarrange your luggage as you remove them.

It’s also recommended that you stay with your luggage when the TSA agents screen your bags. This way, you can explain right away if they have a question. It also helps prevent other people from sneaking things in your luggage which might bring you problems.

Although it’s rare to have issues with your Reed Diffuser as you go through security check-ups, sometimes you may encounter someone who does not know what it is, and this could make them extra cautious.

If your trip is international, research the specific rules of the airline you are flying with and the particular country you are departing from before your trip. This will save you the hassle of learning their rules and regulations concerning liquids. This is because each airline and country have their own rules.

Each essential oil has multiple health benefits . Apart from smelling wonderful, some help you relax, reduce anxiety, motion sickness, and jet lags when you move to a different timezone.

What are the Best Essential Oils to Use With Your Reed Diffuser when Traveling

So, ensure that the oils in your Reed Diffuser have multiple uses.

Some of the oils you should consider taking when traveling for your Reed diffuser include:

If you are using essential oils on the plane, it’s necessary to consider other passengers. Would you please observe the following tips?

  • Essential oils, especially when using a Reed diffuser, have a strong aroma, so remember to use them with caution. The more rattans you use, the strong the scent. So please use two rattans to ensure that the scent is not strong to the point that it can irritate other passengers. You can check with those close to you.
  • You must stick to those essential oils that are familiar and widely recognized, such as lavender and peppermint.

Nothing is stopping you from bringing your Reed diffuser on the plane. Ensure that you adhere to the 3-1-1 TSA liquid rules, and you will have no issues at security check-ups. Pack your favorite essential oils and Reed diffuser in a transparent quart-sized bag.

If you want your travel to be seamless, follow the advice given above, and you are guaranteed to enjoy your vacation.

How To Use A Reed Diffuser – A Comprehensive Guide

February 25, 2023 by Diana

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. See Full Disclosure Here

Reed diffusers have a certain undisputable elegance and charm. They look beautiful in any setting and diffuse their aroma quietly and unobtrusively. Once you learn how to use a reed diffuser, you’ll have a simple and stylish way to add a lovely aroma to your home or workspace.

bottle of reed diffuser

If you’re new to using this aromatherapy accessory, it helps to first understand how a reed diffuser works and how to use it. This will help you enjoy the benefits of aromatherapy in a safe, stylish, and affordable manner.

What Is A Reed Diffuser?

A reed diffuser is a type of passive diffuser for essential oils . Passive diffusers disperse scents into the atmosphere through absorption and evaporation. Unlike nebulizing and ultrasonic diffusers , they don’t use any active mechanism.

A reed diffuser uses thin, naturally absorbent rattan or bamboo sticks that disperse its fragrance into the air.

It consists of a glass or ceramic container that contains scented oil, carrier oil, and a bundle of thin reeds or sticks that are inserted into the oil.

The carrier oil is added to dilute the essential oil and also to help it disperse more steadily. On their own, essential oils are highly volatile and would evaporate way too quickly.

The reed diffuser sticks are naturally absorbent. When dipped in the bottle, the reed diffuser sticks absorb the oils slowly until they are completely oil-soaked from the bottom end to the top end.  This helps to carry the aroma out of the bottle and disperse it into the atmosphere.

How Does A Reed Diffuser Work

The secret lies in the oils and the reeds that are used.

The oil is a combination of essential oils and a carrier oil. The essential oils provide the aroma and the carrier oil helps to dilute and steady the diffusion of the essential oil.

The reed diffuser sticks used are always porous. That’s important. When placed in the container, the bottom end of the reeds absorbs the oils, which travel up the reed through capillary action.

As the oil reaches the top of the reed, it evaporates and releases its aroma into the air.

The diffuser continuously releases fragrance into the air as long as there is oil in the container and the reeds are in contact with it.

It can provide a continuous aroma for several weeks or even months, depending on the size of the container and the amount of oil used.

How To Use Reed Diffusers

Reed diffuser bottle

Most readymade containers come with a cork stopper or a screw-on cap that seals the contents. The reed diffuser sticks come separately.

Remove the bottle stopper carefully, taking care not to spill the contents.

Insert the reed sticks into the bottle making sure the bottom of the reeds are in contact with the oil.

How many reeds should you add to the bottle? It depends on the scent intensity you want. Add one or two reeds for a subtle scent. If you want a stronger scent, add three or more reeds to the bottle.

If this is your first time using this type of diffuser, I strongly recommend starting with fewer reed diffuser sticks. You can then adjust the intensity by inserting additional reeds one at a time so the scent is not overpowering.

Flip the reeds after a few hours. This helps to saturate the dry ends with the fragrance oil and maximize the scent throw.

The aroma typically last for several weeks, depending on the size of the bottle, the number of reeds used, and whether you use it continuously or only occasionally.

Check the fragrance level regularly and add more oil as needed.

Benefits Of Using A Reed Diffuser

Reed diffusers offer a couple of benefits that make them preferable to other types of diffusers under certain circumstances.

They offer a practical diffusing solution in a room that does not have an available plug point.

They are also better to use for aromatherapy purposes in smaller rooms such as a bathroom or a small study. This is because they emit an aroma that is subtler than that emitted by larger ultrasound or nebulizing diffusers.

Whether you want to create a cozy atmosphere in your kitchen, add a refreshing scent to your bathroom, or bring some energy to your workspace, knowing how to use a reed diffuser can help you achieve your desired ambiance.

How To Choose The Best Reed Diffuser For You

collage of reed diffusers

There are a few important factors you need to consider when choosing the best reed diffuser for you.

Type Of Oil – The containers may contain synthetic fragrance oils or natural essential oils. Although both have pleasant aromas, I strongly recommend only using reed diffusers with essential oils. Essential oils are safe to inhale and offer powerful benefits in addition to refreshing aromas.

Aroma – The aroma depends on the essential oil used. Some contain a single essential oil, others may contain a blend of two or more essential oils. Choose a scent that suits your preferences and the benefits you wish to avail of.

Container Material – Top-quality reed diffusers with essential oils will always come packed in a glass or ceramic container. Glass containers do not react with essential oils, which helps to protect the properties and benefits of the oil. On the other hand, essential oils will eat into plastic containers, damaging the oil as well as the container.

Container Style – Reed diffuser bottles double as lovely décor accessories even when they’re not in use. With that in mind, it does help to choose a bottle in a style that complements your décor.

The most important thing is to make sure you buy a reed diffuser with pure essential oils and not one with fragrance oils. Fragrance oils contain synthetic ingredients that don’t offer any benefits. Sometimes they can also be toxic.

Using a reed diffuser with pure essential oils allows you to get the aroma as well as the benefits of the oil in the diffuser.

The Yankee Candles brand makes the best reed diffusers with essential oils. You can find these in a wide range of aromas.

Are Reed Diffusers Safe To Use?

Yes, they are generally considered safe as they don’t require heat or electricity to work but you do need to take a few precautions.

Keep reed diffuser bottles out of reach of children and pets at all times Essential oils are highly concentrated and can be toxic if ingested. Even when the container is empty, the glass can break, resulting in serious injuries.

Place the reed diffuser base on a steady surface to prevent it from toppling over.

Avoid inhaling essential oils if you are pregnant or nursing.

How to Use Reed Diffusers — Everything You Need to Know

Reed diffusers are a convenient and long-lasting way to infuse a room with your favorite fragrances. Not only do they smell wonderful, they're often beautifully designed to also add an elegant, stylish vibe to your home décor.

In this article, we’ll explain how to use reed diffusers to make your home or office smell fresh, inviting, and luxurious.

What Are Reed Diffusers and How Do They Work?

Reed diffusers are popular home fragrance products that allow aroma to continuously diffuse into the air throughout an entire room or area. Compared to scented candles, reed diffusers produce fragrances that usually last longer and don't require an open flame.

While they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, all reed diffusers have 3 main components:

  • Fragrance oil (usually a simple mixture of essential oils and a base solution)
  • Reed sticks (which soak up the oil and disperse the scent)
  • Vessel (usually in the form of glass bottle that holds the oil and reeds)

The aromatic fragrance oil, which often contains a blend of various essential oils, is placed inside the glass vessel of the reed diffuser.

Reed sticks, traditionally made from natural rattan reeds, are also placed into the vessel so that one end is submerged in the fragrance oil while the other end is exposed to the air. The reeds contain small pores that allow the fragrance oil to be absorbed and travel towards the top half of the stick.

As the oil reaches the part of the reed that’s outside of the bottle, it evaporates and releases the scent molecules into the air.

As a result, reed diffusers provide a constant, fresh scent that’s especially great for places like bathrooms and foyers, where you want to maintain that wonderful smell all the time without the need to keep an eye on a lighted candle.

How to Use Reed Diffusers

One of the best things about reed diffusers is that they are quick and convenient to use — with minimal maintenance. You can fill up a room with your favorite fragrance in just a matter of minutes.

Here’s the best way to use a new reed diffuser:

  • Before you set up your diffuser, place a few paper towels underneath the glass vessel in case of spills. Avoid doing this over wooden or delicate surfaces because the oil may leave stains.
  • If the fragrance oil comes in a separate container, the next step is to pour the oil into your vessel until it is approximately ½ to ¾ full. Don’t fill it all the way to the top, or it might overflow when you add the reeds in. Skip this step if your diffuser vessel came with the oil already inside.
  • Place your reeds into the vessel so that the bottom of the sticks are submerged in the fragrance oil. The number of reeds you add determines how light or strong the scent is (we recommend starting with 6 to 8 reeds).
  • Give your reeds a few minutes to absorb the oil, then carefully flip them so that the dry end of the stick is in the bottle and the saturated end is in the air.
  • Spread your reeds out as much as possible to let air circulate between them. Allow up to 24 hours for the fragrance to fully diffuse.
  • Flip the reeds periodically (around once a week) to keep the scent strong.

After setting it up, a reed diffuser will typically last between 1 to 6 months, depending on the amount of aroma oil in the vessel.

Whenever you want a burst of fragrance, flip the reed sticks. Do this carefully one by one to avoid letting the fragrance oil drip out. We don’t recommend doing this too often though — at most once every 2 to 3 days — because it will cause your oil to evaporate faster.

If you feel that the scent is too light, you can also add more reeds to your diffuser. At the Harlem Candle Company , our reed diffusers come with 8 high absorbency rattan reeds. This is usually more than enough for most situations, but you can purchase additional rattan reed diffuser sticks online if needed.

Where to Place Your Reed Diffuser

When using a reed diffuser, it’s important to consider the size of the room it’s in and where to place it. Popular places to use reed diffusers include:

  • Foyers and entryways

For smaller rooms and areas like bathrooms and foyers, a small reed diffuser with 6 to 8 reeds is usually sufficient to provide a nice, subtle fragrance. For more spacious areas, you may need additional reed sticks and a larger diffuser to fill up the entire space.

As to where in the room to place it, choose an area with good air circulation but not next to air conditioners, windows, or corners. A neat tip is to think of your diffuser as a vase of flowers. Place it somewhere that people tend to walk by, so that they get a nice whiff of fragrance each time.

Lastly, place your reed diffuser in a cool, shady location. This won’t affect the fragrance, but keeping the bottle at a lower temperature and out of direct sunlight will help it last longer.

How Often Should You Flip the Reeds?

Flipping your reed sticks every so often provides a fresh burst of fragrance and helps prevent the reeds from getting clogged. We recommend doing this around once a week or every two weeks.

To do this, take the reeds out and put the dry end into the vessel. Do this over a sink or trash can to avoid dripping oil onto your table or furniture. Use a tissue when holding the reeds to keep your fingers from getting oily.

When Should You Replace the Reeds?

Good quality rattan reeds can last up to six months, but after the first month you might notice the scent starting to fade. That’s because dust and other impurities can start to clog up the reed over time, which hinders the fragrance oil from diffusing properly.

For best results, we recommend switching out your diffuser reeds every 2 to 3 months .

How Reed Diffusers Work: The Science Behind the Fragrance

Diffuser Lab - Giving you all the best advice on choosing a diffuser and diffuser recipes!

how do reed diffusers work

Do you love the smell of essential oils but don’t want to deal with the hassle of candles?

Reed diffusers are a great alternative!

These little devices use reeds to disperse the fragrance into the air, and they come in a variety of styles and scents.

But how do they work?

This blog post will look at how reed diffusers work and explore the science behind their fragrant magic!

How Do Reed Diffusers Work – Our Guide

the word how

What is a reed diffuser, and how does it work?

A reed diffuser is a device that disperses fragrance into the air and is great for making your house smell good . This is often done by using rattan sticks inserted into an essential oil bottle. The rattan sticks absorb the oil and release the fragrance into the air.

Reed diffusers work by using the capillary action of the rattan sticks to absorb the essential oil. The oil is drawn up the stick and into the small pores on the stick’s surface. The essential oil is then released into the air.

How many rattan sticks are used and how often the diffuser is refreshed with oil can control the amount of fragrance released.

Some reed diffusers also use a heating element to help disperse the fragrance.

The science behind how reed diffusers disperse fragrance

Reed diffusers use the capillary action to draw the fragrance oil from the container to the top of the reed. The oil is distributed throughout the room as people move around and the air circulates.

The science behind how this works is quite fascinating. The fragrance oil comprises tiny molecules released into the air as the oil evaporates. These molecules interact with the air around them, and as they do, they create a unique scent to that oil.

The concentration of fragrance is what determines how strong the scent will be. The higher the concentration, the stronger the scent will be. This is why some reed diffusers seem to be more fragrant than others.

The length of the reed also plays a role in how the fragrance is dispersed. The longer the reed, the more fragrance will be released. This is why it’s essential to ensure that the reeds are fully submerged in the oil when you first start using the diffuser.

As the reeds soak up the oil, they will become saturated and less fragrance will be released. At this point, you can either remove some of the reeds or add more oil to the container.

How to choose a suitable reed diffuser for your home

When it comes to choosing the right reed diffuser for your home, there are a few things you need to take into account. Size is one of the most important factors, as you want to choose a diffuser that will fit comfortably in the space you have available. It would help if you also considered the fragrance type and strength you prefer.

Some diffusers come with various scents, while others allow you to use your essential oils. For example, if you have allergies or are sensitive to certain smells, choose a diffuser that doesn’t include artificial fragrances. The last thing you need to think about is how often you plan to use your diffuser. Some models need to be plugged in, while others can run on batteries.

Once you’ve considered all these factors, it’s time to decide which diffuser is right for you.

The benefits of using a reed diffuser

There are many benefits to using a reed diffuser in your home. They are a great way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils without having to light a candle. They are also safer to use around children and pets (although you should always go by what it says on the instructions).

Reed diffusers are a great way to freshen up the air in your home and create a relaxing ambiance. They can also help to reduce stress and anxiety.

A reed diffuser is an excellent alternative to traditional air fresheners if you have allergies. They are also a great way to fragrance your home without artificial chemicals or scents.

The bottom line: If you’re looking for an easy and affordable way to enjoy the benefits of essential oils, a reed diffuser is a perfect choice.

How to make your DIY reed diffuser

Making your DIY reed diffuser is a great way to save money and customize your home fragrance. You can use any essential oil you like, and you can choose the type of reeds you like best.

To make your DIY reed diffuser, you’ll need an empty glass jar with a lid.

  • A few handfuls of reeds (the amount you’ll need will depend on the size of your jar)
  • Your choice of essential oil
  • A carrier oil

Start by pouring a small amount of your chosen essential oil/carrier oil mix into the bottom of the glass jar. Add the reeds, then place the lid on top. The reeds will soak up the oil/carrier mixture and diffuse the fragrance into the air.

If you want to change the scent of your DIY reed diffuser, replace the essential oil with a different one. You can also experiment with different jars and reeds to create your unique fragrance combinations. Enjoy!

Tips for keeping your reed diffuser in good condition

Reed diffusers are a great way to enjoy your favorite scents in any room of your home. To keep your reed diffuser working its best, follow these tips:

  • Keep the bottle upright. Reed diffusers work by drawing oil up from the bottom of the bottle and diffusing it into the air. If the bottle is tilted, the oil will not flow correctly, and the diffuser will not work.
  • Do not let the reeds soak in the oil for too long. If they are completely saturated, they will stop diffusing the scent.
  • Keep the room temperature moderate. Reed diffusers work best in rooms between 50 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Keep the diffuser out of direct sunlight. The heat from the sun can cause the oil to evaporate more quickly, which will reduce how long the scent lasts.

You can keep your reed diffuser working its best for months or even years by following these tips!

Our favorite oil scents for reed diffusers

There are many different scents to choose from regarding reed diffusers, but some of our favorites include lavender, vanilla, and citrus.

Lavender is a great scent for relaxation, vanilla is perfect for creating a cozy atmosphere, and citrus is refreshing and uplifting.

Experiment with different scents to find the ones that work best for you.

If you’re looking for a natural and affordable way to improve the air quality in your home, a reed diffuser may be the perfect solution.

They look beautiful, but they also work to purify the air and create a relaxing atmosphere.

Now you know how a reed diffuser works, choose one that fits your lifestyle!

With just a few simple steps, you can enjoy all of the benefits of this wonderful aromatherapy tool.

DIY Your Own Reed Diffuser With Items You Likely Already Have At Home

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When it comes to filling our spaces with soothing scents, there are several different products to try, but a reed diffuser is one of the most visually appealing and also one of the safest. They don't get plugged in, don't invite mold growth, are generally safe if kept out of reach of pets and children, and don't present a fire hazard. However, like all ambient aroma enhancers on the market, reed diffusers can get expensive. Luckily, you probably already have most of the materials required to DIY this seemingly luxe item yourself, making it a perfect fit for your household's needs. So grab a small bottleneck vase you're not using, grab those unused bamboo skewers and a neutral oil out of the kitchen, and dig through your pantry, medicine cabinet, or vanity for any pleasant extracts or essential oils you'd like to use.

There are, of course, certain essential oils that are toxic to your pets, but if you use 100% pure essential oils, keep them in a location where they're unlikely to be toppled over, and make sure your oil is properly diluted and in a well-ventilated area, it should be safe. You should never apply essential oils to your pet's skin or fur, and call the vet immediately if your pet has ingested essential oils or is exhibiting symptoms of gastrointestinal or respiratory distress.

DIY Reed Diffuser

An essential oil reed diffuser is a stylish addition to your home that guests will never guess was an easy DIY . You'll need a small vase with a wide base and a narrow top. The smaller the opening, the slower your scent will diffuse. Reeds can be purchased in home fragrance sections of stores, or if you like grilling, perhaps you have some extra bamboo skewers tucked away in the kitchen. If not, Walmart has a package of 100 for under $1 . All that's left are the oils. You'll need a neutral carrier oil from your kitchen — such as avocado, coconut, or sunflower — and any pure essential oils you like for scent.

Determine how many reeds you'll use. It should fall somewhere between 6-12, depending on how big your vase is and what looks good to you. If you're using skewers, cut off the points using kitchen shears individually, or a cleaver and cutting board if you want to do them all at once to ensure similar lengths. Pour your neutral oil from a measuring cup into your vessel, about half of the way up, making note of how much you used. Add 25 drops of essential oil for every ¼ cup of neutral oil. If you are mixing scents, divide them to add up to 25 drops together. Soak the sticks in the oils for several minutes, then flip them over. Flip them again once a week to renew the scent.

Where To Get Essential Oils

It's possible you already have food-grade essential oils in your kitchen. Used for flavorings, things like peppermint, citrus, anise, and even savory herbs come in essential oil form. If your bathroom is stocked with skin care, you might have essential oils like tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus. You may even have an essential oil or two on hand for cleaning. Whatever essential oils you don't have, however, you can buy everywhere from craft stores to department stores, from discount stores like Walmart to online retailers like Amazon . Just make sure the packaging confirms they are 100% pure essential oils. This ensures they are derived only from the plant that produces the oil in question, not mixed with other oils or diluted with chemicals or other contaminants.

Of course, you do have the option to make your own essential oils, but the time and effort it takes to do this may far outweigh the benefits. The process requires a great deal of plant material, takes weeks to procure, and only produces a very small amount that won't be nearly as pure as store-bought options. It might be an interesting future project for your tween's science fair, though, so don't discount it entirely.

Can Reed Hastings Disrupt Skiing?

The Netflix co-founder bought Powder Mountain, in Utah, and is turning half of it into a private club for wealthy homeowners who pay a hefty annual fee. Will the public-private model fly?

On a Monday morning in early March, Reed Hastings, the billionaire co-founder and former chief executive of Netflix, clicked into the bindings on his snowboard and started off down one of the slopes at Powder Mountain, a ski area in Utah’s northeast corner. He quickly veered off the groomed trail into some well-spaced trees, and as he made turns over bumpy snow, you could hear his edges scratch against patches of ice.

“Not as good as I was hoping,” he said at the bottom. “But still not bad.”

Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, Mr. Hastings, 63, seemed to be enjoying the perks that come with his new gig: ski area owner. “I used to snowboard about 10 times a year,” he said. “Now getting out is part of the job.”

Last September, Mr. Hastings, bought a controlling interest in Powder Mountain for an undisclosed sum, inheriting more than $100 million in debt.

A small figure can be seen skiing down a snow covered ridge with a large snow covered mountain in the background.

Not long after, he announced that he was adopting a business model never before tried in the ski industry: He would make 2,000 acres of the mountain’s terrain private, accessible only to people who owned homes in an enclave atop the mountain and who paid a membership fee expected to run between $30,000 and $100,000 per year. The rest of the ski area would remain open to the public, underwritten by the private operation.

The move, he said, was a way to compete with the multimountain passes like Ikon and Epic, without drawing the crowds that come with them. “All of the independent ski areas are looking for ways to survive,” he said. “Going boutique, higher end, private, is probably where they need to go.”

Mr. Hastings, embraces the notion that he can disrupt the ski industry the way he disrupted entertainment, though he admits he’s learning the ski business on the fly.

Will it work?

“We’ll have to wait and see,” said Rick Kahl, 71, the longtime editor of Ski Area Management, a trade publication. “But I wouldn’t bet against the guy who started Netflix.”

Rickety chairlifts and charm

With 8,464 acres of skiable terrain, Powder Mountain, which averages around 360 inches of snow each season, is one of the largest ski areas in the United States. All of that terrain is on private land; most ski areas either lease their land from the U.S. Forest Service or operate on a patchwork of public and private land. Powder has rickety chairlifts and aging day lodges that imbue the place with a certain air of nostalgia. Adding to the charm is that, upon descending some runs, getting back to the lift requires hopping on an old bus.

And, because PowMow (as it’s affectionately referred to) is a bit off the beaten path and has very limited nearby lodging, there are never any crowds.

But the ski area — like many other independently owned resorts — has never been able to make money. Summit, an event-hosting group, bought it in 2013 and had huge plans to build a village with 500 homes, restaurants, bars and possibly even a neuroscience lab and high-altitude performance center. But it failed to sell many of the homesites, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars for as little as a quarter acre of land, and the ski area continued to lose money.

Mr. Hastings, fed up with crowds at heavily developed Park City, had built a home at Powder in 2021. When Summit decided it wanted out, he swooped in.

“I felt I had to do it to preserve the experience here,” he said.

Mr. Hastings, whose net worth is $5.98 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index , immediately invested $100 million of his own money in the ski area, paying off a portion of the debt and purchasing four new chairlifts, which are set to be installed this summer.

He is also planning to build two day lodges with restaurants, private rentals and retail stores for the mountain’s private side, and a 40,000-square-foot lodge will serve as an afternoon and evening hub for members and feature a state-of-the-art spa.

Shortly after the announcement, Mr. Hastings pulled all existing lots on the mountain off the market. When he relists them, he said, the starting price will be $2 million. On Friday he announced that he had also purchased 2,400 acres of terrain adjacent to the ski area’s existing boundary, which will also only be accessible to members.

His bet is that if he can sell all the homesites, membership fees for the private portion of the ski area will pay for overhead and improvements on both the public and private sections.

The private experience

Mr. Hastings isn’t the only ski area owner with the notion that privatization might be a means toward profitability.

In 2022, the owners of Homewood Mountain Resort in Homewood, Calif., announced plans to restrict season pass and day ticket sales to certain Homewood homeowners. After public outcry, that plan was scrapped, according to a spokeswoman for the resort.

The new owners of Windham Mountain Club, in New York, announced in October that they would charge a membership fee starting at $175,000 that would give members access to special amenities and let them ski the slopes in the mornings before they open to the public.

The Yellowstone Club, which was founded in 1997, in Big Sky, Mont., is perhaps most similar to Mr. Hastings’s model. Club members have access to more than 2,700 acres of private ski and snowboard terrain, and if they have also have a pass to Big Sky Resort, which shares a border with the club, can ski directly onto Big Sky’s 5,800 acres of public slopes.

Before skiing together, Mr. Hastings and I sat on brown leather sofas in his Powder Mountain Village home — a cylindrical-shaped modern house with a concrete kitchen island, an impressive looking espresso machine and panoramic views of the Wasatch Mountains and Ogden Valley — as he explained to me why the changes at the ski area were necessary.

“I’m investing a lot of money in Powder Mountain but my plan was never to subsidize it,” he said. “My passion is the charities that I work with, but I never saw this as a charitable endeavor.”

As he looked at the mountain’s finances, he said, “it became clear that we needed to do something significant.”

In the end, that something was leveraging the mountain’s available real estate. “We decided that we needed to lure people here by offering a private experience that they can’t get anyplace else,” he said.

If his plan pans out, Harris Sondak, the former mayor of Alta, Utah, and a professor at the University of Utah’s David Eccles School of Business , said that more ski areas might adopt a public/private model to increase revenue. “Running a ski area is expensive, and any new way to make money is often embraced,” he said.

In addition to taking part of the mountain private, Mr. Hastings is raising the price of a season pass to $1,399 from $1,259. A season pass for seniors 75 and older, which used to be free, will now cost $1,049. The number of season passes sold, which had been capped, will no longer be limited, though the number of day tickets will.

Much of the ski community, particularly locals, was upset by the changes. “I’m very concerned,” said Aaron Vexler, 48, who has owned a condominium at Powder Mountain since 2012. “They’re severely limiting the terrain, raising prices, and also selling more passes. How do you sell more passes and keep the ski area uncrowded?” Others, feeling as though Mr. Hastings is only interested in making money, gave the new owner a nickname, “Greed” Hastings.

During our conversation, Mr. Hastings pointed out that three of the new lifts he is putting in will provide access to public terrain. As part of the announcement of the new private terrain, Mr. Hastings also said that more than 1,000 acres of terrain will be added to the public side of the ski area, opening in 2025. “All the new terrain will help spread people out and help keep the ski area uncrowded,” he said.

Checking out the new terrain

After my runs with Mr. Hastings, Kevin Mitchell, Powder Mountain’s general manager, and I hopped in a small snowcat to explore some of the new private terrain in an area known as Davenport, which is currently used for guided cat skiing.

After a 15-minute ride, we got out and put on our skis to descend a steep slope, making smeary turns on untouched snow through the trees. I was impressed. But when we got back into the cat and headed around the bend, I was astonished.

Above us I saw steep, craggy pitches — terrain that’s so challenging it has garnered attention from the professional snowboarder Travis Rice, who has created a series of extreme snowboarding competitions known as Natural Selection . Mr. Mitchell said Mr. Rice was considering holding one of his events there. A lift is planned for the area, though for next season, members will ride a snowcat to the top.

Before venturing into Davenport, I’d wondered if the existing slopes that were becoming private were appealing enough to entice well-heeled skiers and snowboarders to throw down on $2 million lots and high membership fees. With Davenport, the private offering is the total package.

“The overall experience for the private community will feel integrated but elevated,” said Alex Zhang, Powder’s chief creative officer. “The homeowners have access to premium conveniences — such as ski-in ski-out housing, upscale lodges and private lifts — resulting in untracked powder that last for days.”

A few days later, we checked out the new public terrain. A large portion of it is known as “Don’t Mention It,” or DMI for short. It was named by backcountry skiers who found the descents there so good that they didn’t want anybody else to know about them. After a short hike beyond the ski area boundary, I was able to get a full view of the slopes and could see why they so coveted them.

Dozens of steep, long runs and chutes wind down the vast expanse, with huge boulders jutting out of the land like prehistoric monuments. A big open bowl makes up much of the new terrain, but extreme skiers and snowboarders will drool over the north-facing slopes, which trump the skiing in Davenport and, when they open, will likely be considered some of the best skiing in the country.

“There will be a lift back here and maybe two lifts,” Mr. Mitchell said. “We have a year’s worth of planning to do.”

Fortunately, I didn’t have to wait that long. I dropped onto a slope and skied through well-spaced trees, descending the length of nearly seven football fields. It hadn’t snowed much in about eight days, but the run still held light powder that drifted over my boot tops. At the bottom, my legs were burning and I had a frozen grin on my face.

Traditions unchanged

One day after skiing, I grabbed a stool at the Powder Keg, a bar at the mountain that’s famous for its greasy burgers and its old-school ambience. I drank a beer and listened to a local woman strum her guitar and belt out folk tunes. None of that will change.

Though Timberline Lodge, the building that houses the Powder Keg, will get an upgrade, Mr. Hastings said he is intent on keeping many of Powder Mountain’s sacred spots and traditions unchanged. When finishing runs in the area known as Powder Country, for example, you’ll still get on a bus back to the lifts.

“You can’t just tear down a building, put up a new one, call it the same thing, and expect people to feel the same way about it,” Mr. Hastings said.

Mr. Hastings said it’s that old-school vibe that makes Powder Mountain special. “We’re building a luxury experience on the private side of the mountain,” he said. “But many of the homeowners will still ski the public side and want to experience the parts of Powder Mountain that you won’t be able to get in the village.”

At the time of my visit, Mr. Hastings had college friends visiting.

“I sent them to the Powder Keg for lunch,” he said. “It’s one of my favorite places to eat.”

“All of the independent ski areas are looking for ways to survive,” Hastings told the Times . “Going boutique, higher end, private, is probably where they need to go.”

So, what will Hastings’s Powder Mountain look like? Lots on the mountain will start at $2 million, he said. Those who buy will be able to ski and snowboard on 2,000 preexisting acres, and on Friday he announced another 2,400 acres next to the ski boundary had been purchased for members-only use. Beyond the desirable slopes, the private offerings will include two day lodges with restaurants, retail stores, and a 40,000-square-foot lodge for afternoon and evening use with an in-house spa.

“We’re building a luxury experience on the private side of the mountain,” Hastings told The New York Times . “But many of the homeowners will still ski the public side and want to experience the parts of Powder Mountain that you won’t be able to get in the village.”

But the Netflix chairman has had success disrupting one industry before. And he might just be at it again with Powder Mountain. As Rick Kahl, the editor of a skiing trade publication, put it to the Times , “I wouldn’t bet against the guy who started Netflix.”
