PUTRAJAYA TOUR MALANG

An unforgettable 3-Day 2-Night Tour to Explore Mount Bromo & the Ijen Crater – Read our first-hand experience and why you will love it!

Recently, we were lucky enough to have the opportunity to take a once in a lifetime trip to experience first-hand the mighty Mount Ijen and its mystical blue fire. Not only that, but this awesome 3-day and 2-night tour also includes summiting the famous Mount Bromo – and we can’t wait to share our intrepid experience with you!

Our Mount Bromo and Ijen tour began at around 6 pm on a Friday evening in Bali. As we were picked up from our accommodation we quickly became acquainted with our driver Didik, who would be taking us from Bali to Mount Ijen, on to Mount Brom o, and back again in his comfortable air-conditioned transport. Didik explained to us the schedule of our 3-day 2-night tour and our hearts swelled with the anticipation of witnessing epic volcano sunrises for the next two mornings. The drive from Bali to Mount Ijen took roughly 6 hours, including a trip on the car ferry from Gilimanuk in the North of Bali, over to East Java. While crossing the ferry, Didik offered us local specialties, including quail eggs and authentic Balinese coffee. As we were feeling adventurous, we decided to oblige. We reached the base camp of Mount Ijen just before midnight which meant that we were able to sneak a couple hours of sleep in the car before we set off at 1:30 am to catch sunrise at the Mount Ijen Crater.

The trek to the summit of Mount Ijen was challenging, and at night the temperature dipped below 20-degrees celsius. We were grateful to have brought long trousers, jumpers and hats as it was a little cold when we reached the top. The trek from the base to the crater took around 2 hours and 30 minutes and was a steep climb for most of the way, so we certainly worked-up a sweat! But before we could rest, we donned gas masks and climbed into the rocky crater of Mt Ijen where we were excited about finally having the chance to witness the famous blue fire for ourselves. As we reached the base of the crater, we could see the blue flames magically appearing to dance on the surface of the volcanic rock. Although our eyes and throats were feeling the effects from the strong sulfur fumes (even with our gas masks on!) we were awestruck by the glorious blue lake in the crater, as well as the blue fire and smoke which covered the rocks. We learnt that the local workers who we saw in the crater were mining for yellowstone to sell for just 2,000 IDR per kilo (20 cents), and that each day they would carry many kilos of rock down in baskets from the Mount Ijen crater.

After taking in the view from the summit of the volcano we had a short rest and refueled with some snacks, then we climbed our way back down to base camp.

Next Trip: To Bromo

The next part of our adventure was to take us from Mount Ijen to Mount Bromo , but thankfully we had a 7-hour car journey which allowed us to rest our tired legs and catch up on some sleep. We stopped for lunch along the way and sampled some more delicious local foods with encouragement from Didik, our driver.

We finally arrived in the valley of Mount Bromo and we decided to go to bed early at our accommodation to gather our strength for our final climb. The accommodation was basic, and we were glad that we had brought a power pack with us because there was nowhere to charge our phones! But we didn’t let a small issue like that bother us, because we were here for the adventure of a lifetime!

We were picked-up at 2.30am on the final day of our 3-day and 2-night tour. Although we were a little bit tired from our previous climb to the Mount Ijen crater, we were determined to conquer Mount Bromo as well! With that in mind, we were driven to a picturesque lookout point where we were able to watch the sunrise over Mount Bromo , with Mount Semeru (the tallest and most active volcano in Java) in the background. Although it was pitch black at first, as soon as the sun appeared over the horizon, we could clearly see Mount Semeru in all its glory with small puffs of smoke appearing from the summit every 20-30 minutes. It then dawned on us that we were witnessing volcanic activity right in front of our very own eyes – hitting home just how alive and raw the natural beauty of Indonesia is!

After sunrise , we were escorted in the Jeep to the Mount Bromo Crater which made us feel like real off-road adventurers. When we arrived at the crater, we were overwhelmed to find ourselves right in the middle of a lava field! The driver let us out near the crater, and it was a much easier descent compared to that of Mount Ijen, as it took only 30 minutes and there were even stairs at the last part.

When we reached the rim of the crater, again we were awestruck. Not only could you see and smell the gasses pouring from the crater of the active Mount Bromo – but there was also a rumbling noise similar to a thunderstorm. It was a truly memorable and humbling moment where we could experience the raw power of the Earth right beneath our very feet! For those brave adventure seekers, there was also the opportunity to follow a narrow path which snaked alongside the side of the slope – offering cooled lava views on one side and a steep drop into a bubbling crater on the other. Definitely not for the faint hearted! Once we’d had our fill of being inside the magnificence of Mount Bromo’s crater, we drove back to our accommodation and prepared to return back to Bali after a memorable 3-days and 2-nights. We made the Ijen crater tour, and we came from Ubud, so it was a really long drive, but both our drivers: Han in Bali and Helmi in Java;were very nice, patience and understanding if we needed anything – rest stops, photo stops, lunch/dinner break in their recommended restaurant etc. They arranged our ferry tickets, accommodation check-in and check-out. Helmi told us everything in detail about the program and how it will go. They both kept in touch with us constantly on WhatsApp and helped us to find them and also they were always on time (they got every pick-up point at least 15 minutes earlier, just to make sure we won’t have to wait for them). So on Java the pick-up was at 00.30 from our accommodation from where they took us to the Ijen Geopark and introduced us to our tour guide, Sukron. He was absolutely fantastic! ❤️ I like to joke around and he totally got me, we laughed all day! 🙃 But most importantly, he was very professional and informative (everything about life in Java, about the volcano and the wildlife). We organised our tour by messaging Yoga via WhatsApp; he was very responsive and helpful and was willing to tailor the tour to our needs. We were accompanied on the tour by our driver, Rizal, and our guide, Tony, both of whom were delightful, professional and well organised. They picked us up near Banyuwangi at 12:30am before driving us to Ijen base camp, from where a local guide led us on the 1.5 hour hike to the Ijen crater and the 30-minute descent into the crater. The guide was brilliant and the hike was quite challenging but manageable. Our guide was considerate and always checked if we needed to slow down or rest. Ijen was an incredible experience - the blue fire and acidic lake were some of the most amazing things we had ever seen. It is not to be missed! We were then driven around 6 hours to our accommodation near Mount Bromo for the second leg of the tour, arriving early afternoon. The car journey was very comfortable (always ensuring we had good air conditioning, checking if we needed to go to the shop etc.) and Rizal was a very safe and good driver. The accommodation at Cafe Lava was quite basic (be prepared to hear the call to prayer quite loudly around 6-7:30pm!) but fine, with clean and comfortable beds. We were driven up to King Kong hill by jeep at 3am to see the sunrise, which was absolutely extraordinary. Tony then guided us on the short hike up to the steaming Bromo crater. The views and landscapes around Bromo are amazing; it’s another must-see! After breakfast at the hotel, Rizal and Tony then drove us to our accommodation in Malang. Overall, the experience was absolutely amazing and, although the tour is relatively gruelling due to the hiking and very early mornings, it is more than worth it: it’s a fantastic way of exploring some of the best things East Java has to offer without the hassle of arranging drivers/accommodation/guides and is reasonably priced. Our guides Wulan (Yogyakarta) and Abel (East Java) as well as our driver Dika have been outstanding - everything was arranged as agreed, always on time (important for us), safe and carried out with smile and in positive mood. Wulan took us to a beautiful sunrise and lead us through the wonders of Merapi, monumental Borobadur and Prambanan. That wa amazing! Bromo and Ijen Tour: The Perfect 3-Day Route

Visiting the Bromo and Ijen crater is one of the popular reasons to visit Java in Indonesia. It is best to do this Bromo and Ijen tour via Malang. You can expect three days full of adventures and natural wonders. Driving across the wide-stretched sea of sand at Bromo, visiting the Coban Pelangi and Madakaripura waterfall, driving through Ngadas Village, the highest vegetable mountain area on Java.

Day 1 – Waterfall, Hill Farms & Savannah

The drive from Malang to Cemoro Lawang (Bromo village) is a beautiful two-hour drive with a 4×4 jeep. You will need a four-wheel-drive car since you will be climbing a lot towards Ngadas village. Just before entering the Ngadas region, you can visit the Coban Pelangi waterfall.

You can either see it from a viewpoint (5 min walk, 10000 IDR) or experience its power at the foot of the waterfall (Free). It is a 15-minute walk down over a well-paved path and definitely not too hard.

This 3-day Bromo and Ijen tour route starts in Malang but can be done the other way around, starting at Ijen from Bali .

Ngadas Village is a vegetable area (farms) located on steep hills. Not many foreign tourists pass this route as it is not a well-known way to follow the Bromo and Ijen tour.

After Ngadas, you will start descending into the Savannah, the flat area around Bromo. Drive around through the ‘Sea of Sand’, take some awesome photos with your jeep, and arrive at Cemoro Lawang (Bromo village) before sunset and visit the secret sunset viewpoint, which you can find in the article linked below.

Day 2 – Sunrise at Bromo

Make sure to head to bed early on day one and set the alarm at 2:45 AM. At 3 AM, your jeep will take you up to one of the viewpoints that look onto the Bromo volcano. Followed by visiting the actual crater and have a look inside an active volcano.

On that same day, make your way towards Ijen with a stop at the second-highest waterfall in Indonesia. The Madakaripura waterfall. As water cascades from all sides, you and your camera will get wet. Don’t worry; rain jackets are sold at the entrance. From Bromo to Ijen is a 4-hour drive.

Day 3 – Sunrise on Ijen

For your trip to the Ijen Crater Lake, you have to start hiking at 2 AM to experience the ‘Blue Fire’ or at 4 AM to experience sunrise on the lake. It is a 1.5-hour walk, so make sure to leave on time to not miss one or both of the above-named moments at Ijen.

Your driver will pick you up around midnight. This can be at your hotel or at the meeting point. In about 3 hours you will reach  Cemara Lawang village  at the crater rim. In Cemara Lawang you will have to change your private comfortable car for a private Jeep. The Jeep will drive you to  Mt. Pananjakan , that is one of the highest view points in the area (2770 m). You can drink a cup of coffee or tea and experience a local snack before  sunrise . Weather conditions will eventually determine the views and the color palet.

After sunrise the Jeep will continue to mount Bromo via the  sea of sand . Ask the driver to stop if you wish to expereince the sea of sand. Otherwise your driver will park near  Luhur Poten temple . After the Jeep parked you will breakfast in the sea of sand. then from park it will be a 45 minutes walk to  the top of Mt. Bromo . If you don't feel like walking, you can rent a horse (not included). Take your time. When ready, the driver will be waiting for you. Once back at the Jeep, you will be driven back to Cemara Lawang. Here you will change back to your more comfortable car to continue to Bondowoso via the winding road over Arak-Arak hill. On route you can have lunch (not included) and stretch your legs. You will arrive in the afternoon.
