Celestron Hummingbird vs Hawke Nature-Trek 9-27 x 56

I'm looking for a very portable spotting scope to supplement binoculars for viewing and digiscoping. I'm looking at the US BHPhoto site for information. Celestron makes a "Hummingbird" 9-27 x 56, $260US and a "Hummingbird" ED 9-27 x 56, $430US Hawke Sport Optics makes a "Nature Trek 9-27 x 56" (Not ED), $200US. All three scopes look identical. Upon close inspection of the specifications, the Celestrons have the same FOV (219ft-96ft), close focus (9.8ft), eye relief (15.0mm), and weight (20.8oz). The Hawke has better specs FOV (108-234), close focus (8.2ft), eye relief (20mm), and weight (20.3oz). The spec differences imply that the Celestron and Hawke have different optical systems, though it's hard to be sure, and I'm sure the Celestron ED model is superior image-wise. I'm leaning toward the Hawke because of its wider FOV and better eye relief. In addition to direct viewing, I'd like to "digiscope" with my Iphone, primarily using the phone as a large viewer, also some photography. The digiscope adapters I'm looking are the Meopta MeoPix Uni 2, $100US or the Novagrade Universal Double Gripper 9, $170US Does anyone have experience or thoughts about these scopes or adapters, or any other models to suggest? Regards, Larry Burt Portland, Oregon

My understanding is that this scope can take 1.25” eyepieces and this you can remove some of the limitations of the zoom eyepiece, though you’ll need to check posts to see which eyepieces people have tried. Peter

The zoom on the Hummingbird is distinctly average generally and poor above about 20x, but a fixed astro eyepiece could give better views & performance but, see Peter's post above. Not all eyepieces will come to focus. No idea about the Hawke. There are also very similar variations on the same theme from Svbony, Docter Optics etc, with slightly different specs. RB

Thanks for your replies. I'm not too concerned about performance above 20x. I'll be satisfied with "average" up to that. I just received information from BHPhoto that the eyepiece on the Celestrons is NOT removable, but I've seen conflicting info elsewhere. Not sure about the Hawke. I'll try to verify by calling Celestron and Hawke tomorrow. I found the Svbony 9-27 x 56 model, direct from Svbony's Hong Kong site, only $180, but I suspect shipping will be steep. Claims to be ED glass. Interestingly, the specs are slightly different from Hawke and Celestron: FOV 234-108, same as the Hawke, close focus 2 Meters (6.6 ft), and eye relief 18mm. Hard to know if it's the same scope as the Hawke or one of the Celestrons. I don't see the Svbony 9x27 on Amazon, but they have a smaller 8-24 x 50. Wider FOV at 264-126, 1.5M (5 ft) close focus, not ED, only $165. Ebay US doesn't have the 9x27 Svbony, but it's on British Ebay at a much higher price. Can't find out much about Docter, haven't found anyone online carrying their scopes. Any thoughts on the digiscope adapters?

I swapped out the stock zoom on my 50mm Hummingbird scope with the Celestron X-Cel’LX 7mm eyepiece. It gave the little scope a new lease on life. Much wider fov and brighter and sharper towards the edges. On Baader’s website they have a photo of the Hyperion zoom Mk IV. mounted on a Hummingbird so I assume that will work as a much better zoom than the stock zoom. Still tempted to get the Baader since it’ll probably fit on one of my mythical future scopes.

THE NEW HAWKE® OPTICS NATURE-TREK 9-27×56 SPOTTING SCOPE PROVES GREAT THINGS COME IN SMALL PACKAGES
The New Ultra-Compact Spotting Scope is Perfect for Hunting Adventures Where Space and Weight Are Important
Hawke® Optics, the world leader in high-quality sporting optics with outstanding performance in the field and at amazing value to consumers, breaks new barriers in spotting scope size, performance and cost with the new Nature Trek 9-27×56 spotter. It is the perfect scope to pack on a long, back-country adventure where space and weight are an issue.
Spotting scopes are extremely useful for hunting. They allow you to study and assess game animals from a distance before it comes time to take the shot. Hunters are often faced with a choice, especially when it comes to hunting in the back country, between hauling in a bigger, heavier scope so they get the clarity they need, or spending a huge amount of money to get a compact, lightweight spotter. Clarity is critical for spotting scopes. Without it, eye strain can affect your ability to see the fine details of your target. That’s where the new Nature Trek 9-27×56 spotting scope comes in.
To handle the clarity aspect of the scope, Hawke uses fully multi-coated optics with a BAK-4 Porro Prism to give you better contrast and color transmission. This helps to cut down on your eye strain, since you can see the image clearly. The field of view is 234-108ft at 1000 yards. There is a dual-focus knob to let you truly fine tune the image you see. This spotter has close focus letting you see detail as close as 8.2 feet away. It is digi-scope compatible so you can use it as a zoom lens for your camera.
The Nature Trek 9-27×56 spotting scope is extremely durable. It’s nitrogen purged and is water and fog proof. There is a stay-on lens cover, slide out sun shade and a twist-up eye cup. Hawke is confident in this scope’s durability to the point that it comes with Hawke’s No-Fault Lifetime Warranty. The point that will truly endear this spotting scope to hunters and outdoor adventurers is how compact the Nature Trek is. The scope weighs in at a scant 20.3 ounces, or just over a pound and it is only 7.6 inches long. The compact size means it will slide into a backpack, waist pack, glove box or even your pocket. It comes with lens covers and has an MRSP of only $219, making it the most economical, compact and clear choice for hunters looking for the ultimate compact spotting scope for this fall.

Russia calls second drone strike on Moscow skyscraper “terrorist attack”
From CNN's Olga Voitovych, Anna Chernova and Vasco Cotovio
Russia says Ukraine launched three drones toward Moscow on Tuesday, in what the country's Ministry of Defense has labeled a “terrorist attack.”
“On the night of 1 August, an attempt by the Kiev regime to launch a terrorist attack by unmanned aerial vehicles against facilities in Moscow... was foiled,” the ministry statement said.
According to the ministry, the three drones were brought down.
“Two Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed in the air by air defence facilities over the territory of Odintsovo and Narofominsk districts of Moscow region,” it said.
A third drone was intercepted and lost control before crashing into a complex of non-residential buildings in Moscow City, the statement added. It hit the very same building that was struck in Ukrainian drone strikes on Sunday .
Some background: The Moscow City area is mostly a financial district of the city but the building that was hit – for the second night in a row - houses some government offices.
Among the offices at the building are the delegations of the Ministry of Economy, the Scientific and Technical Library of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Digital Development, their subordinate structures and a local body of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart).
Employees at the Ministry of Digital Development have been working remotely since the first drone attack on Sunday, Russian state media reported.
What Ukraine is saying: Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak said the drone strikes on Moscow are a sign the Russian capital is becoming “used to a full-fledged war."
“Moscow is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war, which, in turn, will soon finally move to the territory of the authors of the war to collect all their debts,” Podolyak said in a post on Twitter Tuesday.
“More unidentified drones, more collapse, more civil conflicts, more war,” he added.

Russian Defense Ministry says it thwarted Ukrainian attack on Black Sea vessels
From CNN’s Olga Voitovych
Russian forces repelled a Ukrainian naval drone attack on two of its patrol vessels in the Black Sea, according to a statement posted on the Russian Defense Ministry's Telegram channel on Tuesday.
“Overnight, the Ukrainian armed forces made an unsuccessful attempt to attack with three uncrewed boats the patrol vessels Sergei Kotov and Vasily Bykov of the Black Sea Fleet, which were carrying out tasks to control navigation in the southwestern part of the Black Sea, 340 kilometers southwest of Sevastopol,” the statement read.
The statement added that the three Ukrainian naval drones “were destroyed by fire from the regular weapons of the Russian ships,” while the Russian ships “continue to carry out their assigned tasks.”
The Vasily Bykov is one of the two Russian vessels that participated in the attack on Snake Island on 24 February 2022.
CNN cannot verify these claims.
Russian armed forces chief visits Zaporizhzhia frontlines
From CNN's Olga Voitovych in Kyiv and Vasco Cotovio in London
Russian military chief of staff Gen. Valery Gerasimov visited the front lines in the Zaporizhzhia region, the country’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.
In a Telegram post, the ministry said Gerasimov inspected the command post of the troop grouping in the Zaporozhye direction, using the Russian spelling for Zaporizhzhia.
“At the command post, the head of the General Staff heard a report by the commander of the grouping, Colonel-General Alexander Romanchuk, on the current situation, the nature of the enemy's actions and the performance by Russian troops of combat tasks in the Orekhov (Rus for Ukr Orikhiv) tactical direction," the post said.
It was not immediately clear when exactly Gerasimov was at the command post. CNN could not independently verify his whereabouts in the Zaporizhzhia region of southern Ukraine.
The Defense Ministry added that Gerasimov "drew attention to the timely identification of the enemy, the launching of preventive strikes against it and the conduct of counter-battery warfare" during the inspection.
Some context: Gerasimov was thrust into the position of leading Russian President Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine in January this year.
The decision put Gerasimov, who was been chief of the General Staff for more than a decade, closer to direct supervision of Putin's campaign and with more responsibility for it.
"Nowhere to hide": The question troubling Ukraine's troops amid a grinding counteroffensive
From CNN's Nick Paton Walsh, Florence Davey-Attlee, Kostyantin Gak and Brice Lâiné, CNN
The four roads of Staromaiorske appear almost ground to dust in the drone footage. It’s a tiny village, but as the latest gain of Ukraine’s renewed counteroffensive in the direction of Mariupol, Staromaiorske’s symbolism far outweighs its size.
Its fate represents a larger problem for Ukraine as it pushes forward. After the bitter battles of Ukraine’s advances, barely a wall is left standing from which Kyiv’s forces can defend the recaptured ground, making their hard-earned progress vulnerable to Russia’s blunt artillery.
This is exactly what happened Monday, when persistent shelling was said to have pummelled the village’s ruins. At one point, Russian officials even claimed to have kicked Ukrainian forces back out of the village, which Ukraine staunchly denied.
For the troops who fought for Staromaiorske, a mixture of Ukraine’s AREY territorial defense forces from Krivyh Rih and the 35th Marines, the fight was the latest of many, where grueling losses have marred every hundred yards regained.
A soldier from the AREY forces, call sign Krivbas, sped towards the front as he described the main peril of the 10-day Staromaiorske attack, at the end of which Russian forces suddenly fled the ruins.
“When you assault under enemy shelling, you have nowhere to hide,” Krivbas said of the ruined village. “That’s the hardest part.”
He said the Russians have tried to recapture the village twice with small groups of troops since it fell last week.
Ukraine’s position is made harder still given Russian forces are on the eastern side of the river, able to use its natural boundary from which they can fire artillery. These latest advances remain small in scope, but came after Pentagon officials suggested Ukraine had stepped up a gear in its months-long counteroffensive and was finally committing reserves to the fight.
Hopes are high for a faster pace of advance, but have been dampened by the very real threat of Russian airpower and Ukrainian exhaustion, troops in frontline villages told CNN.

Drone hits a building in Moscow, city's mayor says
From CNN's Josh Pennington
A drone has struck the same building in Moscow that was hit on Sunday, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Tuesday.
"Several drones that were trying to fly into Moscow were shot down by [our] air defense. One flew into the same tower in [Moscow] City as last time. The facade at the 17th floor was damaged," the mayor said.
Some background: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Sunday that war is “gradually returning” to Russia after the Kremlin accused Kyiv of targeting Moscow with drones.
The Russian Defense Ministry said three drones were intercepted Sunday, but a business and shopping development in the west of the capital was hit. The fifth and sixth floors of a 50-story building were damaged, and no casualties were reported, state news agency TASS reported.
Videos showed debris as well as emergency services at the scene.
Moscow attacks Zelensky’s hometown after he said war had returned to Russia
From CNN's Olga Voitovych and Vasco Cotovio
A day after Volodymyr Zelensky said war was “returning to Russia” with an attempted drone strike on Moscow, the Kremlin launched a deadly airstrike against the Ukrainian president’s hometown of Kryvyi Rih on Monday.
At least six people were killed, including a 5-year-old girl, and dozens of others were wounded when a pair of ballistic missiles struck a school building and residential tower in the central Ukrainian city.
Zelensky said more than 350 people were involved in the rescue operation. Emergency services personnel were still searching for survivors under the rubble as of Monday afternoon.
Residents said there were no air raid sirens before the missiles struck and took out significant portions of two buildings. Some said they had little time to scramble for cover.
“This time, we did not have time to orient ourselves,” Kryvyi Rih resident Natalia Balaba said . “My husband was in the corridor. He was knocked down by the wave.”
Balaba said all the windows in their apartment had been shattered and damage lay everywhere.
“We were very frightened. We were in great shock,” she said.
It’s unclear why Russia targeted Kryvyi Rih. Ukrainian officials said there were no military targets nearby. The head of the local defense council, Oleksandr Vilkul called the bombardment a “terrorist attack.”
Russia carried out a similar attack on the city in June , killing 11 people.
The Russian Defense Ministry has not commented on the situation in Kryvyi Rih. Moscow has repeatedly denied targeting civilian infrastructure, despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
On Monday, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the Kremlin would intensify its attacks in response to Kyiv’s attempted drone strikes against Moscow the previous day that damaged a business and shopping development in the west of the capital.
White House calls senior Russian defense official's comments on nuclear weapons reckless
From CNN's Arlette Saenz
The White House is criticizing senior Russian defense official Dmitry Medvedev’s comments suggesting Russia may resort to nuclear weapons if Ukraine is successful in its counteroffensive.
A National Security Council spokesperson called the rhetoric "reckless and irresponsible" on Monday. So far, the US has not seen any indications Russia is preparing to turn to nuclear weapons, the spokesperson added.
“We continue to monitor this closely, but we have not seen any reason to adjust our own nuclear posture nor any indications that Russia is preparing to use a nuclear weapon,” they added.
Some context: Medvedev, the deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, made the comments in a Telegram post. They are the latest in a series of nuclear threats made by Moscow since launching its war against Ukraine.
"Just imagine that the offensive… in tandem with NATO, succeeded and ended up with part of our land being taken away. Then we would have to use nuclear weapons by virtue of the stipulations of the Russian Presidential Decree,” Medvedev said in the post.
“There simply wouldn’t be any other solution,” he added. “Our enemies should pray to our fighters that they do not allow the world to go up in nuclear flames.”
US President Joe Biden said earlier this month that he does not believe Russia would deploy nuclear weapons.
White House national security official expected to attend Ukraine peace talks in Saudi Arabia, officials say
From CNN's Kylie Atwood
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is expected to attend peace talks on the war in Ukraine next week in Saudi Arabia, US officials said.
Ukraine is taking the lead on the effort which is expected to be attended by Western countries and developing nations. Russia is not expected to attend the talks.
Ukraine’s goal is that the talks work to identify shared principles for ending the war and that there is a peace summit later this year with global leaders signing up to support those principles, US officials said.
The talks hosted in Saudi Arabia are the second in a series of meetings organized by the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak. The first talks took place earlier this year in Copenhagen .
Saudi Arabia was picked for the talks in part because of the country’s relationship with China, one US official explained. While China is not expected to attend the talks, US officials have publicly encouraged China in recent months to play a constructive role in resolving the Ukraine war though there has been no signal of China taking any proactive steps towards a peaceful end.
“I reiterated that we would welcome China playing a constructive role along with other nations to work toward a just peace, based on the principles of the United Nations Charter,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in Beijing in June.

5 of Moscow's most BEAUTIFUL districts
1. Sokolniki
By 9 a.m., the main square of Sokolniki district in the northeast of Moscow begins to fill up with dog-walkers and cyclists. The mobile coffee shops and hot dog outlets are not open yet; the only sounds are the rustling of the autumn leaves and gurgling of the main fountain, around which sleepy guards walk.
“But on the weekend, there are crowds of people here, as if the whole of Moscow descends on it,” says Raisa Bazarova, a resident of Sokolniki. She says that she literally “married” Sokolniki 21 years ago, in 1999, when she moved from the central Arbat district to live with her new husband.
Police fire station with a tower-tower in Sokolniki
It took three years for her to feel at home, finally making friends with the neighbors. Now, Raisa considers it the most beautiful area of Moscow and is fond of its low-rise skyline and architectural monuments.
“As soon as you step out of the subway, you’re in Sokolniki, and the first thing that catches the eye is the pre-revolutionary watchtower [built in 1884]. It saw the old wooden Moscow and has been preserved in all its splendor,” says Bazarova.
Moscow, park Sokolniki
Raisa also advises foreigners to visit Sokolniki Park, one of the oldest in Moscow, founded in 1878, with fountains, ponds, a swimming pool, an amusement park and its own rose garden. Sokolniki was adored by Peter the Great and Alexander I and it was here that they often held feasts. For Bazarova, the lush greenery makes it the “lungs” of the district.
The Viktyuk Theater. The building of the outstanding architect Konstantin Melnikov, 1929
Another must-see, according to Bazarova, is the Roman Viktyuk Theater — if nothing else, then to see one of Moscow’s main architectural gems, designed and built in the Constructivist style that prevailed in the city in the 1920s. Moreover, Russian-speaking theater lovers might want to catch a performance of ‘The Maids’ by French playwright Jean Genet.
2. Levoberezhny
Galina Yakunina, director of a sports club in Moscow’s north for nine years, walks with unfeigned pleasure along the main alley of Rechnoy Vokzal (“River Station”) Park, which was restored in 2020 under the ‘My district’ city improvement program.
Aerial view is a beautiful panorama of the renovated Northern River Station in Moscow
In the summer of 2020, the station, which resembles a ship, was enveloped in scaffolding, as the original 1937 edifice was being restored. Today, it is surrounded by fountains with children running around, endless flower beds and an all-new embankment that runs along a miniature replica of the Moscow Canal, replete with children’s paddle boats and other attractions.
“It’s really beautiful. Cruise ships and motor vessels depart from here. Muscovites love it and tourists definitely will as well,” says Yakunina.
Park Levoberezhnyj, Moscow
Her second favorite place for a post-work evening stroll is Druzhba (Friendship) Park, laid out for the 6th World Festival of Youth and Students in 1957. The main features are its monuments and sculptures dedicated to children, international friendship and war heroes, as well as the pond-reflected willows and the playgrounds. Thanks to these two parks, the air in the district differs sharply from that in central Moscow - that she is sure of.
Park Druzhby
In summer, Levoberezhny beach (renovated under the ‘My district’ city improvement program in 2018) becomes the main focal point and Galina heartily recommends it to tourists.
“The beach is covered with sand, with a cafe, sun loungers and beach volleyball. It’s very relaxing,” she says, describing the place.
3. Filevsky Park
For social conflict expert Alexei Ivanushkin, Filevsky Park in the city’s west has always been the main symbol of Moscow.
Fili Park embankment
“I moved here in 2005 from St Petersburg, when the Gorbushka electronics market was one of Moscow’s main draws. There were always crowds of people, poorly dressed, but eager for gadgets. We used to go to the wooded parts of Filevsky Park, clearing branches, because it was impossible to get through. There were bottles everywhere that people had just left. In other words, it was a hub for alcoholics,” Ivanushkin shares his first impressions of the area.
Church of the Protection of the Theotokos in Fili, 1690-1694, Moscow
Fifteen years later, the now-landscaped embankment of the park is Alexei’s favorite spot for daily walks and he also advises tourists to visit.
“For me, the place is full of energy and inspires the soul,” says Ivanushkin.
No less significant is the Baroque Church of the Intercession at Fili, constructed in the late 17th century and financed by the boyar Lev Naryshkin, asserts Ivanushkin. In 1812, Napoleon’s soldiers converted the first floor of the church into a stable. In 1943, the lower church was used as a hospital and then, until 1963, as a warehouse for paper products. Highly recommended to anyone interested in unusual places of worship.
Gorbunova recreation center
“The Suvorov Military School stood opposite the church. And every year at the graduation ceremony, it was a tradition for graduates to secretly raise the flag of the armed forces on the building. They tried to stop it, but no one was ever punished,” recounts Ivanushkin.
To learn more about Russian rock music, Alexei advises a visit to the Gorbunov Palace of Culture, named after Sergei Gorbunov, the director of an aircraft factory and built in 1938. In 1986, it housed the first “rock-n-roll laboratory” in Moscow, earning the building a reputation as the capital’s premier venue for rock concerts and festivals.
4. Krylatskoe
To learn more about sports facilities built for the 1980 Moscow Olympics, Krylatskoye is the place to start, says local resident Yulia Zhiltsova, who moved to Moscow from Siberia and has lived in the city’s western part for 21 years.
Krylatsky hills. Panorama
“I love walking around the velodrome and other Olympics facilities. There’s also a speed-skating center and rowing canal. Red Bull regularly organizes the Flugtag competition here, it’s really fun and interesting,” notes Zhiltsova.
Cycle Track "Krylatskoe"
In her free time, Yulia enjoys what are perhaps the capital’s most beautiful views from West Krylatsky Hill in the nearby park, offering a panorama of Moscow-City, the Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos and the arch of Zhivopisny Bridge.
She advises tourists to climb the hill, take shots of the stunning Moscow backdrops and escape the hustle and bustle of the central historical districts.
Red Bull Flugtag 2017 in Moscow
“Here you feel at one with nature, yet central Moscow is just 20 minutes down the road. There are no crowds, even on weekends. The center is packed and impersonal, but here the atmosphere is a bit more homely,” Zhiltsova explains.
5. Khoroshevsky
Khodynskoe Field in the Khoroshevsky district is notorious as the site of a deadly crush during celebrations to mark the coronation of Nicholas II in 1905. Today, it looks more like a futuristic city with fantastical towers, art objects in the local park and dancing fountains. By 8 p.m. on weekdays, the park is especially crowded — school students shoot TikTok dance videos and ride skateboards, while children run with their parents through the mirror maze.
Local resident Alexander Lyubarsky moved to Khodynka in 2010 and, as a photographer, immediately fell in love with the views.
“Every part of Khodynsky Park — be it a swing, a pond, a sports ground stylized as an airplane and helicopter, or the fountains behind us — is photogenic,” explains Lyubarsky. The Park appeared in 2018 under the ‘My district’ city renovation program.
Chapel of the Transfiguration of the Savior in the Memorial Park complex of world war I heroes. Built in 1998
His second favorite place for photos is the small Berezovaya Roscha (“Birch Grove”) Park (renovated in 2020 as part of the ‘My district’ program), which, besides birches, is home to maple, ash, and linden trees.
Every visitor to Khodynka simply must go to the World War I Heroes Memorial Park at the Bratskoe (Fraternal) Cemetery, Lyubarsky insists.
World war I Heroes memorial Park
“There’s a wonderful chapel with the buried ashes of Grand Duke Nikolai Romanov [the grandson of Nicholas I and an uncle of Nicholas II who was the Russian commander-in-chief during World War I]. Everything’s also very photogenic there,” says Lyubarsky.
In his opinion, every foreign tourist should visit Khodynka for a glimpse of what the future Russia might look like.
“It would be good if all the suburbs could be like this. I’d love this to spread beyond the Moscow Ring Road [MKAD],” he concludes.

17 Exciting Things to do in Moscow
Written By: Linda Voltaire
Updated On: December 21, 2022
Visiting Russia? These are the top 17 things to do in Moscow to help you plan your trip.
If the western world has New York City , the first great metropolis on the eastern side of our planet is Moscow. A huge city with a complicated and impressive history, Moscow gets a bad rep over Russian politics – but that doesn’t make it any less impressive. Capital to the largest country in the world, Moscow takes the grandeur of its standing very seriously.
This is a place where luxury is king and where opulence takes a front seat in every aspect of life. The buildings are grand and imposing, the parks are luscious and enormous, and even the subway stations look different in Moscow than anywhere else in the world.
Table of Contents
Best Things to do in Moscow, Russia
Walking around Moscow is also going through the tumultuous history of the 20th century, which had Russia as one of its main protagonists. There are fascinating remains of these times everywhere in the former Soviet capital, from the gorgeous Seven Sisters skyscrapers to the Orthodox cathedrals that were closed for the better part of a century. Still, Moscow is also a completely modern city, with a vibrant social and party scene, incredible restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the world.
After living in Russia’s capital as an ex-pat for four years, I got the privilege to experience not only the main attractions in Moscow but also the everyday life in this huge city and quickly found my sweat spots off the beaten tracks! So here is my list of my top 17 things to do in this exciting metropolis!
Attractions in Moscow
When visiting a famous city like this one, it’s a must to go through the most iconic landmarks first. Moscow has plenty of those, most of them in the center of the city, which is very well-planned for tourists.
1. The Red Square, Kremlin & Surrounding Area
No place tells the story of Moscow’s power in the past century the way the Red Square does. This is where the biggest political meetings in the USSR occurred for many decades, and you can feel the power on each step.
Here, you’ll also find the historic museum at the entrance, showcasing the decades of history behind this iconic landmark. The Lenin Mausoleum, perhaps the most famous resting place in the world and home to the remains of the former communist leader, is also here.
On one side of the Red Square you’ll find the Kremlin, the fortified complex that now hosts the presidential residence. This is also home to the most iconic of all Moscovite landmarks: St. Basil’s Cathedral, a 16th-century marvel of colors. This is the best spot to take a selfie and show the world you’ve reached the Russian capital!
- Get your Kremlin Skip the Line Tickets and Kremlin tour here.
- Free cancellation up to 24-hours in advance of the tour.
2. Bolshoi Theatre
You can easily spend a couple of days just exploring the Moscovite city centre, and the Bolshoi Theatre should be your second stop. Walk past the Red Square and then head to the nearby Bolshoi Theatre, one of the oldest and most renowned houses of opera and ballet on Earth.
Visit for the impressive early 19th-century architecture, but if you’re seeing a ballet performance, make sure you book between 3 and 6 months in advance! I can strongly recommend this as it is a truly unique experience!
- Book a private 2-hour tour of the legendary Bolshoi Theatre.
- See the presidential box reserved for tzars, watch a rehearsal and skip the lines through a separate entrance.
- Free Cancellation up to 24-hours in advance.
3. Luxury Shopping at GUM and TSUM
While many might think of Moscow as the sad place with the long bread queues from the USSR days, it’s been quite the capitalist haven for a while.
If you’re up for some shopping, you’ll find one of the biggest luxury malls in town, TSUM, right behind the Bolshoi and GUM, at the red square. GUM is the most famous department store in town, where you’ll find luxury everywhere and all high-end brand.
All in an imposing late 19th-century building with lots of history, worth a visit just for the design, its bridges and the glass roof even though you are not up for shopping!
4. Christ the Savior Cathedral
A newer addition to the gorgeous Moscovite cathedrals and my grandeur neighbor during my years in the city Don’t let the young age of this building fool you. After the perestroika in the early 90s, the newly revived Russian Orthodox Church received permission to build a cathedral on this site. They did the location honors and built the largest temple of the Christian Orthodox Church.
The façade is as grand as you’d expect, but it’s the inside that will mesmerize you, with its domes as tall as the skies in bright gold and gorgeous paintings and decor! Bring a shawl to cover your hair to adjust to the local tradition.
Head to the back of the cathedral and you will find one of the most photographed bridges in Moscow, the Patriarshiy Most. This is the perfect spot to get a good view and photo of the cathedral but also to see the Kreml and Gorky Park from a distance. Or why not just enjoy a moment watching the river and its boats!
- Get around Moscow with ease using the Hop On Hop Off boat and Bus ticket. 24, 48 or 72-hour tickets available.
5. Gorky Park
Cross the river and head to Gorky Park along the Moscow river. The most famous green area in town, similar to New York ’s Central Park and the weekend hangout for locals. There are many beautiful parks in the city, but if you’re only visiting for a few days, this is the unmissable one!
With fair attractions to entertain children, beautiful artificial lakes and gardens, and lots of outdoor activities, it’s a lovely place to relax. A place of rest in the middle of the metropolis. The area in front of the New Tretyakov Gallery & the Muzeon Park of Arts is actually one of my favorite oasis as a bit more quiet and peaceful than Gorky itself.
Why not spend some time in the museum to get a great tour of Russia’s history through art or just enjoy the art exhibition outside where local artists spend their weekends.
6. River Cruising
One of the best ways to experience Moscow is from the Moscow River. There are many stops for the boats and one is just next to Gorky Park. See the city from another perspective – and turn the ride into a romantic one by taking the evening cruise. Moscow is magic during the night.
If you’re looking for a truly luxurious experience, take the Radisson Blu cruise – or the Erwin for a delicious seafood dinner. Both stop at Gorky or at the luxury Radisson Royal Hotel, set in one of the Seven Sister’s skyscrapers.
- We use Get Your Guide when booking city tours and they offer a River Sightseeing Cruise seeing all the main tourist attractions in Moscow
7. Metro Hopping
First inaugurated in the 1930s, the Moscow subway system is one of the oldest in the world, and certainly the most beautiful. Started under Stalinist times, each metro station is dedicated to grandeur and oozing personality.
Visiting the subway stops is an attraction in and of itself, and Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya, Kropotkinskaya are my favorites. Those surrounding the Red Square are also mesmerizing – in general, these are kind of like underground palaces.
Most of the signs at the Moscow Metro now have Latin letters, so it’s very easy to get around!Unfortunately, the trains are not as beautiful and pleasant as the stations but still, this is a true Moscow experience. Take a guided tour of the 9 most beautiful Metro Stations including the award-winning art deco station. See more details here.
8. Arbatskaya & Artsy Moscow
Novy Arbat Street is one of the most touristy areas in the city, with lots of shops and cafés directed at visitors. When you walk a little beyond, you’ll find a different part of town, where the hip scene thrives because so many artists live in the area. Just follow the small streets with fewer tourists!
9. Moscow State University View
In his effort to create a grander Moscow, Stalin had seven skyscrapers built in different parts of town; they’re called the Seven Sisters. The largest of these buildings hosts the main building of the Moscow State University, one of the most prestigious colleges in Russia – and the one with the best view.
Although this is a little outside the city centre, the sight from above is more than worth it, with the nearby fountains and park and then the whole of the city behind them.
10. Russian Market
If you love to visit markets wherever you go, Moscow has one of the most impressive ones in the world – the Izmailovsky. You can easily take the metro here and feel like you’ve been transported to another time.
This place was first built in the 16th century and retains the look of an old fairytale, with a lineup of colorful old castle. A lovely local experience beyond the confines of the bustling metropolis, where you can also try some delicious Russian barbecue.
Here, you’ll find beautiful souvenirs at great prices.
Off The Beaten Track Moscow
Once you’ve covered the most touristic spots, Moscow still has plenty to offer – and the places below will also be full of locals! Moscow is a city for hipsters, full of trendy and arty spots where you can literally feel the creativity oozing! So for some local vibes, I would strongly recommend my sweat spots below!
11. Patriarshiye Prudy
This is my favorite area in the entire city! While Moscow is generally a very noisy metropolis, Patriarch Ponds is far quieter, yet such a vibrant place. This is a very hip and trendy area making you think you are rather in Paris than in Moscow. Here the streets are narrow and full of chic eateries and clubs to see the local crowd.
A little bohemian and with an air of peace you won’t find anywhere in the city this is a great spot to spend an afternoon with your thoughts.
12. ArtPlay
Barely 15 minutes away from the city center you’ll find the artsiest Moscow district: ArtPlay. For decades, this block was a factory, but it was renovated to become a hub for the arts not too long ago.
Now, you’ll find it’s full of exhibitions, showrooms and art schools – and some of the most creative people in town. Writers, painters, and young hip people use ArtPlay as a rendezvous, and you can feel the creative energy here. The industrial design with modern interior decoration is also a feast for the eyes!
13. Shopping Local Designs
If you’re into design, both international and local, you’ll find lots of cute things at Patriarshiye Prudy. Department store Podium Market is also a great spot for shopping, as a department store everywhere in town, with lots of local and international brands. There’s one in the Four Seasons Hotel next to Red Square. My favorite Moscow mall is Tsvetnoy Central Market, a cool spot with great brands, lots of inspo, and even a cute café!
14. Moscow City
Like many other great capitals of the world, for the past few decades, Moscow has hosted a super modern area full of modern skyscrapers – Moscow City. With a completely different vibe than the rest of town, it’s like a mini Dubai, with lots of impressively tall glass buildings. Here, you’ll find the best rooftops in towns, such as Ruski and Sixty they are perfect spots for dining or enjoying a glass of wine with a view. There are also a relatively new shopping mall with lots of international brands called Affimall!
Wine, Dine, and Party in Moscow
Gone are the gloomy Moscow days – cold as it might be in the winter, Russia’s capital is a place for the senses. Great food and drinks abound – and the clubs are hot, too!
15. Where to Eat in Moscow
Moscow is a great metropolis where people love to dine out, and there are endless options for delicious food. The flavors are as diverse as you’d expect from a big city, with options of fine dining and little hipster eateries.
- For traditional Russian flavors, I can’t recommend Café Pushkin, Dr. Zhivago, and Turnadot enough.
- When looking for international cuisines, Italian is always the way to go, and my local favorite is Probka.
- Fine dining is best done among the clouds at White Rabbit, with European flavors.
- As for the hip spots, you can spend a full day just eating around trendy places, from burgers to Asian fusion.
More Dining Options
- Patriarshiye Prudy offers a lot of small and classy spots with cool concepts, like breakfast restaurants I Love Cake and Fresh.
- For dinner, I love the NYC experience of Saxon & Parole, and the wonderful trendy Pins, with its delicious food and drinks.
- For delicious Asian food head to CutFish.
- Lastly, there’s a recent revival of food markets in Moscow, offering lots of great choices of international flavors at affordable places.
- Don’t miss out the Vietnamese food stand at the Danilovsky market, and everything at Usachevsky!
16. Rooftopping
Big cities deserve to be seen from above, having a cocktail among the clouds. These are my recommendations for rooftop bars in Moscow.
- As I mentioned in the Moscow City section, Sixty & Ruski are two of my favorites, overlooking the newest part of town.
- White Rabbit and its fine dining is also a lovely place for a fun dinner looking down on Moscow.
- O2, in the city center, has an advantage above all others: amazing views of the Red Square.
- Buono, above the Radisson Royal Hotel, might be the most romantic rooftop hotel in town, with its candlelit setting.
- Also on the Radisson stands the Mercedes. It’s a luxurious and posh experience with delicious cocktails.
- The Sky Lounge offers a peculiar experience, mixing an old Soviet building with futuristic additions.
17. Moscow by Night
Party the night away! The city is full of bars everywhere, but there are some areas where you’ll find more than others.
- Patriarshiye Prudy has lots of hip and small clubs and great bars, including the super fun private club Clava, which has a great vibe and people from all walks of life.
- For more hipster style bars, Red October is the place to go.
- Streak is a summer favorite, with a lovely terrace to catch a beautiful sunset – plus, their mozzarella bar is delicious.
- At night, Red October lights up with clubs everywhere, including the cool rooftop one Gipsy.
- Jagger is also a great spot during summer with a more relaxed vibe in garden setting.
- For the traditional Russian luxury experience, go to SohoRooms, a whole other world including all-night go-go dancers.
There are so many things to do in Moscow at night and during the day, you definitely need several days to explore this exciting destination.
Moscow is a must-see city, a city like no other ! I hope you will enjoy this Russian metropolis as much as I did!

Nice article. Love the hidden gems and graffiti art, would love to visit Artplay. Thanks for a comprehensive guide to Moscow!
Moscow is a city where the past and the future live side by side. Here we can find everything from medieval fortresses and Soviet monoliths to glass skyscrapers and innovation centers.
Your article is good and meaningful .
Thanks for sharing about ArtPlay district, we didn’t know about it and it looks amazing 🙂 Hopefully there’ll be a second time in Moscow, we visited last May and really liked the city!
Wonderful stuff! I’ve been to Moscow, but not properly – it’s a long story lol!
Anyhoo, my next thing is to fly from Berlin to Moscow and then travel from there to Beijing via the Trans-Mongolian / Trans-Siberian train. Now, if only I could just find the time …!
I hear Moscow is very beautiful at night. I hope to get out there one day. A friend of mine went to St. Petersburg and had a great experience. Despite all the tension we see on the news with Russia and other Countries like the U.S. I wonder what the sentiment is with Russians and foreigners visiting their country for tourism. Especially Americans.
that looks like quite a beautiful place. 🙂
