When you're not lounging on the sand or refueling at one of Anguilla's many beachfront restaurants, venture to its offshore reefs to snorkel. Beaches rank as the top preferred vacation destination among 34% of Americans, according to a 30A Company 2022 survey of 1,040 U.S. adults. Even just the act of planning a vacation can make someone happy. 

You likely understand why if you’ve ever spent time on a beach. The place where the water meets the land is a treat for the senses, from the sound of the water lapping the sand to the crisp scent of the salt in the air. Beaches are some of the most beautiful places.

Relaxing beachside is beneficial for your well-being , too. Saltwater has been found to release negative ions that help people feel calmer, and the meditative sound of waves can offer a sense of grounding. Even if you’re not frolicking in the water, the beach is where people can easily connect with nature, which is healing. 

Luckily, there are beautiful beaches everywhere, from places renowned for postcard-perfect beaches like Turks and Caicos to the rugged cliffside beaches of Italy. Tripadvisor recently released its 2024 Travelers’ Choice Award for Beaches, which analyzed reviews and ratings between Oc. 1, 2022, and Sept. 30, 2023, to come up with the best beaches worldwide.

“Who doesn't love a beach? It's certainly my happy place – my kids playing in the surf, the sun sinking behind the horizon. And as the breadth and depth of Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Beach lists show, our community is obsessed with them, too,” Sarah Firshein, head of Tripadvisor editorial, told USA TODAY in a statement.

While last year’s best beaches included a wide variety of striking natural landscapes, this year’s awards brought back the picturesque soft sands and crystal-clear waters people imagine when they think of a beach vacation. 

Here are the top 10 best beaches around the world, according to Tripadvisor.

10. Varadero Beach – Varadero, Cuba

A former fishing town, Varadero Beach is situated on the Hicacos Peninsula and stretches along the Caribbean Sea. The sprawling beach actually comprises six beaches , including Varadero, Rincón Francés and La Alameda, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. Visitors enjoy taking a refreshing dip in the vibrant water, snorkeling the sea beds, or water sports like jet skiing or windsurfing.

Snagging the spot as Tripadvisor's second-best beach in the U.S.,Siesta Beach is located on the stunning barrier island of Siesta Key in Florida. Want to venture somewhere new—perhaps outside of the U.S.—in 2020? We know kids like active adventures like ziplining and kayaking (think Belize), but we also know parents want them to try new foods (like wasabi-infused specialties in Japan). Throw in some great tour leaders (we’re looking at you, Adventures by Disney) and some under-the-radar destinations (like Guyana) and you have tons of vacation options across the globe. These are the best international family vacations for 2020.

Belize’s Lodge at Chaa Creek  is a 400-acre eco lodge specializing in adventure, with dozens of different activities offered each day. Be sure to go on a bird watching tour—this area has some of the best bird watching in the country—or take a tubing excursion deep into the jungle, where you can see plenty of beautiful toucans, the national bird of Belize . Zipline among the trees and see a view of the jungle from above. Naturalist guides will take guests horseback riding, mountain biking and hiking through the dense jungle while travelers take in the diverse flora and fauna of the region. Be sure to take a canoe trip down the Macal River to see birds, howler monkeys and other wildlife.

Next, head to the second largest barrier reef system in the world. Victoria House Resort & Spa , located on Ambergris Caye, features spacious villas, a gourmet restaurant with freshly-caught seafood, two beachfront pools and a dive shop where charter boats can be arranged for exhilarating adventures such as scuba diving in the world-renowned Great Blue Hole or snorkeling in Shark Ray Alley. Then head to Naia Resort and Spa  in Placencia, the southern part of Belize, where the family can go on leisure bike rides or spend the day on kayaks or SUP.

2. Curtain Bluff Resort in Antigua

Families looking for all-inclusive fun on the island of Antigua should look no further than Curtain Bluff Resort . Located on 20 acres of landscaped land nestled between two sandy beaches, the resort features one of the highest repeat guest ratios in the Caribbean. For families looking to have many options—without having to check the price constantly—this all-inclusive resort is just the ticket. From snorkeling trips to Cades Reef to water-skiing, paddle boarding, kayaking and windsurfing, kids will have plenty to keep them busy. Plus, the outdoor kids’ club—with feeding and playing with turtles, colorful paint projects, and coconut arts and crafts—will have the kids begging to go back each day.

3. Adventures by Disney Iceland 

Adventures by Disney  has been leading tours since 2005, and has more than 50 itineraries on six continents, with Iceland being one of their newest (and, rapidly, most popular) tours. The  eight-day Iceland tour includes Reykjavik, Vik, Akureyri, Húsavík, and Lake Mývatn. While those names might not be overly familiar, the attractions in those towns are—namely hiking on a glacier, going to the Blue Lagoon, and visiting geysers and waterfalls. In Grindavík, about an hour by car from Reykjavik, the thermal waters of the Blue Lagoon—as well as the accompanying lava mud masks—are the perfect antidote for jet lag on the first day.

The second day is action-packed, covering the Golden Circle—one of the most popular routes that takes visitors from geysers to craters. Plus, there’s plenty to keep everyone active, including riding Icelandic horses; hiking down into Kerio Crater, a volcanic crater that was formed more than 6,500 years ago; and exploring the bubbling hot springs and geysers at Strokkur Geyser.

Other highlights include hiking on the Skaftafell glacier, going behind the waterfalls at Seljalandsfoss (which seems otherworldly), and whale watching (and being mere feet away from them) in Iceland’s longest fjord. There’s also whitewater rafting in Skagafjorour in the north (a part of Iceland that rarely gets explored), as well as visits to the lava labyrinths in Dimmuborgir.

4. UnCruise Adventures to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal

For families who want a truly unique adventure, consider a visit to Costa Rica and the Panama Canal with  UnCruise Adventures . Uncruise is so named because it’s unlike any other cruise line—it’s all about active adventure and interaction in the destination. Each day, familes will have the option to hike, snorkel, kayak, SUP and do skiff tours to see monkeys, sloths, iguanas, hummingbirds, toucans, howler monkeys, scarlet macaws, white-faced capuchins and whales.

Families also get to visit San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica, before sailing to Curu National Wildlife Refuge, where a hike to Finca de Monos trail will let kids get up close to monkeys and sloths. Next up is the Osa Conservation Area, home to the country’s largest national park, Corcovado. Here, there’s a good chance to see tree frogs, caimans, anteaters, scarlet macaws, coatis, and 16 different species of hummingbird. In Panama, sail through the islands of Coiba National Park, making a stop at the postcard-perfect Granito de Oro islet for snorkeling, kayaking and relaxing in the sand. Then transfer from ocean to ocean via the world-famous Panama Canal.

5. Australia’s Outback 

The Outback of Australia, located in the Northern Territory, is famous for its Red Center desert landscape. Home to the iconic sandstone monolith Uluru (formerly known as Ayers Rock), the red-rock domes of Kata Tjuta and the sculpted cliffs of Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park, this area offers plenty of adventure activities for families—including camel safaris into the desert and canyon hikes where kangaroos can be spotted.

For your home base, Sails in the Desert Hotel is ideal in terms of location and activities it offers. Kids can learn about the aboriginal people by taking part in the resort’s cooking class, where they’ll be taught about the native foods and seasonings—and how certain plants, fruits and grains are used in traditional cooking methods.

In Kings Canyon, there are amazing hikes including the Kings Canyon rim walk. Kings Canyon Resort  is a true family resort and a good place to stay. In Alice Springs, be sure to visit the Kangaroo Sanctuary. You’ll get a chance to get up close to these beautiful creatures and learn all about their habitat. The 188-acre wildlife sanctuary was opened in 2011 for rescued baby and adult kangaroos. It’s a great way to end your bucket-list family trip .

For families interested in eco-tourism and adventure activities, Guyana is a great place to visit. It was recently named one of the top ecotourism destinations in the world by travel industry insiders, which isn’t surprising for those familiar with this under-the-radar country. Reachable via non-stop flights from New York, Miami and other U.S. hubs, this small nation is located in the northern part of South America, bordering Brazil, Venezuela and Suriname. Guyana is the only country in South America whose official language is English.

Direct flights and the absence of a language barrier aside, what really attracts people to this country are its truly unique nature and wildlife offerings. The country is often referred to by travelers as the “Land of the Giants” since people come here to see the giant river otters, giant South American turtles, giant anteaters, jaguars (considered the largest in South America), the Harpy eagle (the largest eagle on this continent and one of the world’s most powerful birds of prey), and the giant Victoria Amazonica water lily (Guyana’s national flower and the world’s largest lily). Here, the hyperbole lives up to the hype.

Be sure to visit the Rupununi region—where savannah, mountains and rainforests meet. This area is home to many endangered and protected species. We also recommend a stay at Karanambu ranch, where you’ll get to see the giant otter rehab project, which helps rehabilitate injured and orphaned otters and re-introduce them to the wild. Spend some time with the otters during the day before partaking in the caiman project once night falls. The giant black caiman is the one of largest freshwater crocodiles on the planet, and the Caiman House has been conducting research on these amazing creatures for more than 10 years. They take guests out in the dry season to catch the caimans and record data—you’ll witness them weighing, measuring and then tagging the caimans before releasing them back into the water.

7. G Adventures Japan Family Journey

Hot on the heels of hosting the Rugby World Cup in 2019, Japan has no plans to slow down in 2020, as it’ll be hosting the Summer Olympics. Want to go? Consider a trip with G Adventures , which recently teamed up with National Geographic to launch family-specific itineraries. G Adventures’ travelers to the ‘Land of the Rising Sun’ have been steadily increasing, with an additional 23 percent growth in the past year.

Its 11-day Japan Family Journey starts in Tokyo, where families explore the dazzling uniqueness of this bustling city before heading to Kyoto and the mountain city of Nagano. Activities for families include practicing sumo wrestling and samurai swordplay and sampling a variety of wasabi-infused culinary delights (don’t worry, there are plenty of options, even for the pickiest eaters). This intimate experience means there won’t be more than 20 people in a group, and activity levels are appropriate for kids.

8. Tanzania

Africa for kids? Yes! Travel agents and African specialists agree that a safari can be the ultimate family vacation and no place does it better than Tanzania. The Elewana Collection camps and lodges have been designed to offer the whole family a comprehensive safari experience with an inspiring and educational slant. Each property offers specific activities geared toward families.

Of course, game drives are the big draw for all ages while on safari, but guides also love imparting knowledge and a love of Africa in the younger set, encouraging them to become the next custodians of this fragile area of the planet. Activities include village and school visits (where your kids can interact with the local children), conservation programs (chatting with anti-poaching teams to learn more about conservation), and learning about the traditional food and culture of the Tanzanian community.

At each camp, there’s also specific activies geared toward kids. In Elewana Manor at Ngorongoro, kids can go biking, go on farm visits to see local African animals and tour a coffee plantation to see how this valuable export is made. At Serengeti Pioneer Camp , kids can play safari bingo—going on game drives and walking safaris and crossing off the animals they see for a prize. At Serengeti Migration Camp , kids will learn traditions of the local people by making masks and jewelry .

If the movie Frozen hasn’t already inspired your kids to visit Arendelle (which is based on the real Arendal in Norway), then the sequel definitely will. But beyond Frozen -inspired adventures , there are plenty of other kid-friendly destinations in Norway, such as the town of Hallingdal, which is located between Oslo and Bergen in Eastern Norway and has become a top location for family holidays. Here, the kids will love the Bjørneparken (“the bear park”), where families can get close (in a safe way, of course!) to bears, elk, lynx and even crocodiles. The nearby nature park at Langedrag allows kids the opportunity to see wolves, lynx and moose, and feed reindeer. Plus, nearby playgrounds and activities include a zipline and a brand-new water park for children.

Want an unusual place to play? Head to Gardnos meteorite park where a geologist will show you a real meteorite crater and talk about the rocks and nature that make up the area. Do you have little kids? Go to the town of the area around Lillehammer, less than two hours by train from Oslo Airport. At the Lilleputthammer miniature town in Hafjell, activities have been designed for children between 1 and 8 years old. Think small buildings perfect for the little ones to dress up in costumes , take part in arts and crafts activities, climb small towers and ride a miniature roller coaster and Ferris wheel. The little cars are also made for the junior set to cruise around.

10. Fiji 

Fiji is a great beach destination for families. At the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa , kids can take part in the Planet Trekkers Kids Club, which has pitch and putt, beach football, cricket, volleyball sessions and beach games .  The Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa has the Niu Beach Club for kids, which has lots of fun choices including a wet and wild splash area, an artist in residence with whom kids can tap tap into their creative side, and a climbing wall and trampoline area on the beach. Shangri-la Fijian Resort & Spa has a large floating water park and a “Kids Eat Free” program (for kids under  age 12), as well as kayaks, paddleboards and a variety of water sports for the whole family to enjoy.

Bonus: It just became easier for families to get to Fiji. Fiji Airways , Fiji’s national airline, has two new Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. If you’re lucky enough to fly business class, that means fully lie-flat beds. But even if you’re flying economy, the seats are ranked among some of the most comfortable long-haul economy class seats available. Plus, the kids will love the seemingly endless entertainment options, fast Wi-Fi and the Fijian hospitality, with some of the friendlies flight attendants in the sky.

1.  Alaska

August is slightly rainier in Alaska than earlier summer months, but with fewer crowds and lower prices, the benefits often outweigh the weather risks. It’s a wonderful month to spot caribou, wolves and golden eagles in Denali National Park, as well as grizzly bears, who are busy hunting salmon so they can fatten up before hibernation. 2.  Slovenia

Slovenia might just be Europe’s worst-kept secret. In August, the capital Ljubljana and Lakes Bled and Bohinj are packed with locals and tourists alike, but if you do want to guarantee a crowd-free trip, there are plenty of lesser-known corners of this compact country to explore. As the holiday resorts sizzle, alpine regions offer respite from the heat, making it the perfect time to climb Mount Triglav. That is more true in Herzegovina than Bosnia (Mostar tends to hover around the 40C mark), but refreshing salvation is at hand in the shape of the country’s fantastic mountains. Hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina is still developing, but an enthusiastic group of organisations have opened up mountains like Prenj, Maglaj (the country’s highest) and Vlašić, not to mention the Olympic mountains around Sarajevo. The travel bug continues to bite in 2024, and data indicates growth in both domestic and international trips, along with a cost increase for hotels and transportation. But don't worry as it’s still possible to take an economical vacation whether you want to travel near or far.

Kayak , one of the world’s leading travel search engines, shared with Travel + Leisure a list of domestic and international destinations for low-cost trips. To determine the most wallet-friendly locations, the company analyzed flight searches from July 2023 through December 2023 for travel during 2024. The top 250 most-clicked destinations with the lowest average combined flight and hotel price were considered, excluding outliers based on certain criteria such as travel restrictions and security concerns. Prices and percentages are on average and subject to change.

With that in mind, here are some of the most affordable places to travel in the U.S. and around the world in 2024.

Denver, Colorado

With an average price of $486 for flight and hotel, the Mile High City features a walkable downtown with restaurants, museums, entertainment, and shopping. Low-cost rail service from Denver International Airport to Union Station is not only convenient, but it also takes travelers to the historic Beaux-Arts terminal, where there’s an array of restaurants, stores, and a hotel. Visitors can catch a major league baseball game in town or a concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre .

However, the pandemic has truly been an economic burden, and international tourism suffered losses of $40.7 billion in the year ending in March 2021.

If you’re on a budget, there are still plenty of places to visit, and we’ve compiled a list of the cheapest countries to travel from Australia.

Best Short-Haul Budget Destinations Australia

1. hobart, tasmania .

Hobart is the nearest tourist jewel, located in Tasmania. In Hobart, you can have a cheap summer holiday from Australia – in Australia! It’s a win-win situation: you get to enjoy travelling overseas for a holiday and still stay within the borders.

The best time to visit is during the summer months, December to February. Tasmania is a historical place, and if you wish your trip to be fun but also educational, you shouldn’t skip MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) . If wandering around Mount Wellington , Salamanca Place , and Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens gets you famished, try the popular Tasmanian truffles and beef, and spend some time in the casual and relaxed Aloft restaurant with a marvellous sea view.

There are a few cities that are beautiful, fun, and affordable. Each one brings its residents something a little bit new and exotic, and moving there could be the best decision you've ever made.

Even better, you can live like you own a yacht, but on a blue-collar salary. Time to start saving to travel!

Here are the 7 best places to live rich without much money

1. alicante, spain.

Alicante is a city that has mastered the art of frugal living. They've done it without sacrificing any beauty or quality of living.

It's a beach city on Spain's Costa Blanca and is famous for its excellent climate, great food, stellar entertainment, relaxing lifestyle , and lack of significant tourism. It's a place that won't disappoint.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city's center runs you about $550 a month. Public transit is around $40 a month. A good bottle of wine is $5, which is a deal you can't beat, and a good domestic beer is a dollar. Spain's minimum wage is about $9.97 an hour, or roughly $1,446.27 per month.

2. Mendoza, Argentina

Right smack dab in the heart of Argentina's wine country is the beautiful city of Mendoza. The local economy is strong and there's much demand for fresh, new businesses. If you're looking to start a business, Mendoza is a wonderful place to do it!

A one-bedroom apartment in the city's center runs you about $380 a month. To buy a one-bedroom apartment is about $60,000, so if you're considering starting a business and buying property, this could be the opportunity you've been waiting for.

A good bottle of wine is $4 and a good bottle of domestic beer is $1.40. Argentina's minimum wage is about $11.12 an hour, though the government recently hiked the minimum wage 15% .

3. Bali, Indonesia

This is a low-cost living heaven located in Asia. Bali has a hopping nightlife, a vibrant tourism economy, and great places to shop.

Rent on a one-bedroom apartment in the city's center is $300 a month. A good bottle of wine is $12 and a good bottle of domestic beer is $1.60. The minimum wage is $1.17 an hour.

4. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai has one of the nicest climates in all of Asia. It's a mountain town rich in culture, good food , and friendly neighbors. It's where you can make your dollar stretch pretty far, too. Plus, the sights are absolutely stunning.

A one-bedroom apartment in the city's center is $250 a month, a good bottle of wine is $13 and a good domestic beer is $1.30. Thailand's minimum wage is $10.20 per day, as the Ministry of Labor increased the minimum wage by 5% in 2022.

5. Corozal Town, Belize

This is the city for folks who want to kick back and relax. It's a hot spot for meditation and yoga, and has beautiful beaches and delicious restaurants. Plus, it's very affordable! And you just can't beat the location.

A one-bedroom apartment in the city's center runs you $190 a month. Buying a two-bedroom apartment costs around $115,000, for those thinking of buying a home in their new city. A good bottle of wine is $12 and a good domestic beer is $1.50. The minimum wage in Belize is $3.30.

6. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

Mexico has many little gems of places to live on the cheap, but Puerto Vallarta beats them all. It's naturally beautiful and very romantic but has heavy tourism.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs $450 a month, while buying a traditional townhouse costs $55,000. A good bottle of wine is $7.50, a good domestic beer is $1.25, and the tequila is dirt cheap. Puerto Vallarta's minimum wage is $14.90 per day.

7. Ojén, Spain

Ojén has multimillion-dollar villas and also incredibly affordable living. Though it sits in the mountains, a quick trip will take you to the coastal Marbella. It's perfect for people who want to experience life abroad, but in a more relaxed, quiet location.

Renting a one-bedroom apartment in the city's center runs you $330 a month. A traditional townhouse costs $100,000. A good bottle of wine is just $4 and a good domestic beer is $1.25.

It has to be somewhere you would want to spend time. Where you would be not just comfortable but happy, excited, entertained, and safe.

For those with an eye on both the bottom line and big adventure, Asia can be a great choice.

Not only does it offer some of the world’s most cost-friendly expat havens, it’s also a land of rich culture, stunning natural beauty, and friendly locals.

Here are destinations in this exotic wonderland where North Americans can enjoy a rich retirement on a monthly budget as low as $1,200€¦

1. Hua Hin, Thailand

A three-hour drive from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, takes you to the royal resort town of Hua Hin .

This Gulf of Thailand locale, once a quiet fishing village, saw a change in its fortunes in the 1920s when the Thai royal family identified it as the ideal spot to build a palace for summer escapes from sizzling Bangkok.

Well-heeled locals followed suit, lured by town’s four-mile stretch of beach, cooling sea breezes, and laidback pace of life.

A Comfortable Retirement in Hua Hin

In the decades since, Hua Hin has established itself as a well-developed retirement haven offering excellent health care, housing options ranging from compact condos to beachfront villas and gated communities, and a large expat community and hospitality industry that means getting by in English is no problem.

There’s also no shortage of entertainment options here, from kite-surfing to golf, pickleball to paddle-boarding, you can be as active as you please.

You’ll also find a wide range of social groups here always happy to welcome new members with interests ranging from running and cycling to wine tasting and reading.

Depending on lifestyle choices, a couple could live comfortably here on a budget of $1,850 a month—which includes monthly rent of a centrally-located, furnished, one-bedroom condo at $690.

Opt for a three-bedroom villa with a private pool—$1,200 a month—and your overall budget will sit closer to $3,000 a month.

2. Da Lat, Vietnam

In 1893, when Vietnam was part of the French colony known as French Indochina, famed physician Dr. Alexandre Yersin was sent into the country’s highlands in search of a cool-weather retreat for the colony’s French population.

He found just what he was looking for in Da Lat . Sitting atop the Lang Bian Plateau at 4,921 feet, and surrounded by pine forests and misty peaks, the town had an Alpine-like quality.

Game-hunting and freshwater were also in abundant supply and the temperate climate made it an ideal spot for growing all manner of produce.

Quickly established as a French-colonial hill station, Da Lat was soon home to a health complex, schools, a golf course, parks and manmade lakes, villas, and boulevards.

Today, many architectural and cultural remnants from that era remain giving an otherworldly feel to this hidden haven.

It’s a popular spot for honeymooners and while the expat community is small, those who have settled here enjoy a comfortable lifestyle at one of the lowest costs imaginable.

Living Well in Da Lat

Large, conveniently located apartments rent for $400 a month, the spring-like climate means energy costs are low and often included in the rental cost, and $75 would cover a couple’s weekly grocery bill.

On a monthly budget of $1,200 a couple could live very well in Da Lat.

There are, however, a couple of caveats.

English levels are low here. You can get by just fine when it comes to day-to-day activities like dining out, getting gas, or asking for directions, but if you were to make your home here, you’d need to at least pick up some of the local language.

For health care, expats tend to use Da Lat’s private hospitals where care is of a good standard and cheap enough to pay for out of pocket.

However, for more serious conditions a trip to Ho Chi Minh City, home to two JCI-accredited hospitals, would be recommended.

3. Penang, Malaysia

Just west of mainland Malaysia lies the tropical island of Penang.

This safe, stable, little island offers excellent medical care, a melting pot of cultures, and diverse lifestyle, entertainment, and recreational options.

As a former British colony, English is widely spoken.

And, with jungle trails and deserted beaches co-existing with modern infrastructure and luxury and water-front condos, it’s understandable why this island is home to such a large expat population.

Outstanding Value in Penang

The costs are a draw, too. Penang isn’t cheap but the value for money you’ll find here is outstanding.

On a monthly budget of $2,500 a couple could live in luxury, renting a large condo in a unit with a gym, pool, balcony, and 24-hour security.

The street food here is world-class meaning you can dine out for just a few dollars or take your pick from a host of fine dining options if you prefer.

Penang has a thriving arts scene, hosts festivals in music and film throughout the year, and also boasts a popular country club where you’ll find grass tennis courts, a swimming pool, library, bars, and restaurants.

The island’s members-only Swimming Club offers an impressive sailing program and facilities including squash, tennis, and badminton courts as well as an outdoor pool overlooking the glittering waters of the Straits of Malacca.
