College Admissions

feature_campus

A college tour is one of the best opportunities you have to learn about what a campus is really like. Reading promotional material, or even student blogs, isn't the same as seeing and experiencing it for yourself, but, like any other aspect of applying to college, you need to make sure you're prepared for a college visit—and that means wearing the right outfit!

Most of the time, dressing for a college tour is a casual affair. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider the best way to go about it—comfort and classiness are key .

This guide will walk you through the best way to dress for many different college visit scenarios . A bit of planning will help you have the best possible experience, as well as prepare you for interviews, auditions, and just exploring your dream campus. Read on to find out how!

What to Wear to a College Visit

One of the biggest things to keep in mind when considering what to wear to a college visit is that, in most cases, a college tour is for you to see the college, not for the college to see you .

For the most part, you can dress casually. But there are special considerations if you won’t just be touring the college, so keep that in mind as you’re planning your outfit.

What to Wear on a College Visit If You’re Just Walking Around Campus on Your Own

If you’re not on a guided tour and are just checking out the campus, you can wear pretty much whatever you want, within reason . It might look weird if you’re strolling through campus in a suit—whether three-piece or bathing—but if you’re just there as a visitor, you’re on your own.

What to Wear on a College Tour If You’re on a Guided Tour

If you’re on a guided tour, it’s absolutely okay to be a little casual. You don't need to be impressive, though you should aim for comfort and self-confidence .

Comfortable shoes are a must, though maybe choose something nicer than your rattiest pair of sneakers . Whatever shoes you wear should be broken in so you don't have to deal with pinching and blisters midway through the day. If your feet are hurting, you're less likely to be paying attention to the tour!

Jeans are fine, as are t-shirts, but be wary of anything with a slogan or image that might be offensive. Even if a curse word or scantily clad person doesn't bother you, it's probably not the right fit for your first impression!

You don’t have to dress fancy, but do put in a little bit of effort. Present your best self—the self you’d want people to see as you venture off to college .

body_meeting

What to Wear on a College Tour If You’re Meeting With a Professor

Many students take advantage of being on campus to schedule appointments with advisers or professors in their field of study. If you’ve chosen to do so, it’s a smart idea to dress it up a little bit. Dress clothes are unnecessary, but do dress a little nicer than you would for just a tour .

Polished shoes are a good choice, but you still want them to be comfortable. If they’re going to pinch as you walk around campus, you may want to go more casual with a nice boat shoe, loafer, or boot. Whatever you choose, be sure that your shoes are broken in.

Dark, nice jeans are appropriate for a meeting with a professor. You could also opt for corduroys or khakis— whatever is going to make you feel most comfortable and confident .

A meeting with a professor is more professional than a tour, but not as professional as a college interview . Instead of a t-shirt, go for something a little classier—a  button-up shirt or blouse is always a good choice. You don’t need to reach for a blazer, but if it makes you feel good, do it!

Most importantly, come prepared with questions and a good attitude . This is your chance to find out more about the school you want to attend, and that’s going to matter far more than looking like a model.

body_interview-2

What to Wear to a College Visit If You Have an Interview

Business casual is your go-to for dressing for a college interview . You want to look both confident and professional, so spend a little more time on choosing your shirt and pants than you might for just a guided tour or meeting with a professor.

If you’re walking around campus as well as doing an interview, however, you’re going to want to be sure your shoes are going to hold up to lots of walking as well as looking sharp . Loafers may be a better choice than a dress shoe, unless you’re absolutely certain you’ve broken in the dress shoes and they’re still going to be comfortable after an hour or two.

Opt for a skirt, khakis, corduroy pants, or similar, paired with a button-up shirt or blouse. Dresses are fine, provided you cover your shoulders with a sweater or blazer. Keep your skirt length to around your knees (especially if you’re walking around!), but don’t worry about pantyhose or tights if they’re not comfortable or seasonally appropriate.

Choose an outfit that's right for the season and climate . Layer your clothes if you're touring in the fall or winter so you'll be presentable during your interview, but stay warm enough outside. In the spring and summer, wear light, breathable fabrics so you're not overheating outside—you don't want to show up for your interview all red-faced and sweaty.

If you’re doing an interview on top of taking a tour, consider bringing a change of clothes . You want to be at your best during the interview, so changing into a fresh set of clothes might be your best option, if possible. If not, see if you can schedule your interview for before the tour—that way, you’re not already tired and disheveled from a day of wandering.

body_audition

What to Wear on a College Tour If You’re Auditioning

Business casual is a good baseline, but, depending on what you’re auditioning for, you might make some additional tweaks to your clothes .

For example, what would a professional musician wear? How about an actor attending an audition? What would you wear to a gallery opening (though don’t get too fancy!)?  Don’t overdo it, but do base your outfit choice on what makes sense for your field.

Comfortable shoes are still an absolute must, as you may be standing during your audition as well as walking around campus.

Choose an outfit that suits the weather—don’t wear a sweater for a summer campus tour in California—or add layers that you can remove when you’re done auditioning so you don’t overheat. The reverse is true, as well; bring a warm coat and gloves if necessary.

If walking around in your audition outfit will be too uncomfortable, consider bringing a change of clothes. Though you may have to carry a change of clothes, it’s far better to be comfortable and confident for your interview, and simply comfortable for the tour !

How to Pick What to Wear on a College Tour

What outfit you should wear depends in part on what you’re doing. Unless you’ll be doing an interview or audition, don’t rush out and buy a whole new wardrobe .

Try on lots of combinations and try to find what makes you feel good about yourself as well as comfortable. Again, you’re going to be focused on learning more about the campus, not on impressing your guide . Put in effort, but don’t overdo it.

It can’t be overstated: you’re going to be walking a lot , so wear comfortable, broken-in shoes.

Bring a bag, whether it’s a nice messenger bag or a clean, classy backpack. You’re going to be given lots of information, pamphlets, and so on, and having a place to put it will make walking around much easier. A bag can also hold a water bottle, snacks, and a notebook, which you can use to write down questions and notes you might have while touring.

Don’t worry too much about your outfit . You’ll be part of a group—unless you’re interviewing or auditioning, your main concern should be what you’re going to learn from the visit. Look clean and confident and you’ll have everything you need.

Sample Outfits For a College Tour

With clothes, seeing is easier than reading. Here are a few sample outfits (including some that won't work) to give you the fashion inspiration you need to plan your college tour !

body_outfit1

You don’t have to get fancy, but look at how confident and comfortable she looks . That’s the kind of air you want to strive for, whatever that means to you in terms of clothes!

body-outfit2

These looks are great if you’re doing something a little more formal, such as an audition, interview, or meeting with a professor. Don’t feel like you have to do the whole suit and tie, but notice how each outfit looks tidy and well put-together . Pay special attention to the shoes, too—they’re all different styles, but each is great for a business casual setting.

body_outfit3

This outfit definitely suits the model’s unique style. In summer, these short sleeves and sunglasses are perfect. It’s okay to be unique, as long as it makes you comfortable .

body_outfit4

This look is extremely simple and casual, and also perfect for a college tour . A clean t-shirt, a favorite pair of pants, and tidy hair are all it takes.

body_outfit5

While great for going to the beach, this look isn’t the best for a college setting. It’s a little too attention-grabby; remember, you’re there to learn about the school, not to stand out . The combination of the shirt's low-cut sides and bright pattern are a bit much, especially with the razor blade necklace and sunglasses. The print would be acceptable on a t-shirt, by try to strive for a style that’s understated rather than loud.

body_outfit6

Don’t feel like you can’t be your quirky self on a college visit, but those shoes are a definite no with how much walking you’ll be doing . Again, don’t worry about standing out—you’re not at a college visit to make a big splash, but rather to learn more about the place you could be living in for four or more years. If this is your everyday wear, by all means, go for it, but be sure you’re feeling comfortable and confident.

How to Make the Most of Your College Visit

Now that your outfit is settled, you can focus on the important stuff: getting as much as you can out of your college visit .

Come prepared with questions you'd like answered , including questions for current students, academic advisers, and admissions officers. You may have the opportunity to ask them, and it's better to be overprepared than underprepared !

If there's anything in particular you want to see, leave a little time during your visit to check it out in case it's not part of the tour . You can always ask your guide if it's okay to visit the library, for example, or to see the gym, art museum, or football field. Though you may not be able to get into all of them, there's no harm in asking! Looking at a map and list of facilities will help you plan what you want to see ahead of time.

Don't be afraid to ask for recommendations on your tour, either. Stopping by a local restaurant recommended by a student is a great way to get a sense of what student life is like. See what the area has to offer besides your future school !

LPGA Dress Code Updates: Our Take On The LPGA Dress Code Rules

Lpga dress code rules: updated dress tour dress code.

This summer, the LPGA threw the game a curveball (er, a slice?) with the release of its updated Tour dress code, and they aren’t messing around.

If you’re wearing a racerback top, for example, it has to include a collar. Your skirt or golf skort must to be long enough so that when you bend down to grab a ball, there’s zero risk of revealing your rear — even if it’s covered by undershorts. Women are allowed to wear leggings, but only if they’re under a skirt. And workout clothes? Don’t you dare!

This shift came as a big surprise to the golf community, and not just because of the borderline-slight on women (more on that later). Up until these new rules came out, the Tour had been doing so much to appeal to a younger crowd. And given that two of the game’s defining tenets — tradition and decorum — aren’t necessarily topping your average millennial’s “What’s Cool” list, debunking the stodgier stereotypes around golf is no small feat. But tradition and decorum also make golf so special (!!), so naturally, there’s this tension around staying true to the game while remaining realistic about present day.

This tension isn’t just an LPGA-Tour thing, either. We see it quite a bit when we’re out on the course ourselves. There was that time, for example, when a friend of Tami’s invited her brother and sister-in-law for a round of golf at her club. After the 3rd hole, an employee emerged to inform the sister-in-law that her skirt was too short and “distracting”. This means that another club member had called the pro shop to complain (which is standard protocol, as clubs don’t want members confronting other members). Odds are that the offended party was an older female member. Though, for any golf-goers, it’s never a bad idea to check your clubs rules on dress code, if your club enforces skirt length then you should comply (if you want), and stretch the length and wear   longer golf skorts   or, find another more open club.

Many clubs do have an older, more established — and usually more conservative — membership, and they struggle to balance the needs of those members with those of the next-generation golfing family. When a member calls the pro shop to complain, the pros must oblige, which inevitably leads to a humiliating conversation for everyone involved. What are you supposed to do, anyway? Head back into the clubhouse and change? What if you don’t have a back-up option? In our opinion, you should never be forced to have a spare set of golf clothes with you, you should only need to bring your   women's golf bottoms   (of any kind) and whatever   golf top   you want. And at the end of the day, golf is a sport we play for the competitive edge, comfort and to feel happy. The LPGA dress code rules should never affect that (or any club dress code rules for that matter). It goes directly against the standard ethics of why we golf.

Sky Sports Golf presenter   Henni Goya   points out that, in her experience, female golfers are the ones getting in the way of change. She has a hunch that it has to do with feeling threatened — but it could also be a hazard of the game’s antiquated character. Goya offers: “Maybe golf is just so far behind the times that they haven’t even seen that this is a movement in media now; that women do actually like to help other women.”

This idea of women supporting women takes on even more significance when you consider what a fantastic impact the game can have on future female generations. A girl can learn so much from golf, be it persevering through that umpteenth missed putt to keeping conversation alive with a foursome of strangers (you can’t text your way through 18 holes, after all.) As women, we should be encouraging this exposure, not denying others of it. But if outdated dress codes are turning younger girls away from the game, then that’s a huge missed opportunity for personal development — and that’s a shame. As we’ve said, the younger crowd doesn’t want to feel intimidated, uncomfortable or that’s forcing changes they don’t want. Why should the younger crowd be forced to wear longer golf skorts or pants when they simply don’t want to, and don’t feel comfortable doing it? Sure, it might not seem extreme to an outside eye to wear a few extra inches, but   it’s not about the length, it’s about the why.

summer tour dresscode

Of course we need to respect the game, which in itself already boasts far more rules and etiquette than most other sports. But despite that, why does, say, yoga get to have so much fun? And can we talk about how men are allowed to wear joggers on Tour — it’s a   celebrated trend , even! — yet in the LPGA, they’re forbidden? (PS: Leggings under a golf skirt is never a good look. Just saying.)

summer tour dresscode

There is a fine line between the tradition of the sport, the rules of a club, and the fashion of the day. Yet despite the fact that it’s the 21st century and styles have changed, there are still far more professional women golfers stuck in dated LPGA-legal golf attire than there are professional women golfers who have pushed the boundaries of what’s allowed (see: Michelle Wie.) When professional swimmers started wearing full-length swimsuits with hoods, for example, a fashion statement was the last thing on their minds — they were positioning themselves for optimal results. Obviously.

summer tour dresscode

The ability to comfortably swing a club, maintain even body temperature and optimize overall performance should be top of mind for any professional golfer, no matter their gender. Until the LPGA modifies its latest mandates, it’s up to women’s golf apparel to work harder than ever. And therein lies KINONA’s goal: To deliver such dynamic materials and smart designs that women can play the game they love without even thinking about their clothes — a welcome alternative to this otherwise clothing-obsessed era that’s somehow holding the game captive.

Weddings. Corporate events. Your nephew's bar mitzvah. Seems like any and every event these days has a dress code. But what the heck does "beach formal" or "white tie" really mean? We put together a cheat sheet that demystifies the most cryptic terms on invitations. (While you're at it, check out our guide to wedding-appropriate attire.)

Casual Err on the side of business casual-—and leave the jeans, shorts and flip-flops at home.

Dressy Casual Go for seasonal look that’s a step above casual. For spring and summer, try a sundress with heels or dressy sandals or a jumpsuit. Men can't go wrong with a blazer (linen or light colors for warm weather) and a button-down or polo. Ties are optional.

Cocktail Also known as semiformal. A LBD and statement jewelry is a safe bet. Men should opt for a dark suit and tie.

Beach Formal Throw on a maxi dress with flat sandals (no flip-flops) and your man should wear either a summer suit or khakis with a button-down.

Barnyard Chic OK, it may not say exactly that on the invite. But if the event is in a barn or on a farm, you have permission to wear cowboy boots with a dress. Men can throw a bolo tie or just go casual with a polished denim shirt and trousers.

Black Tie Women should don a long gown and men should sport a tuxedo.

Black Tie Optional AKA formal. Wear a long or short dress with statement jewelry. Men should wear a dark suit with a tie or bow tie.

White Tie This is the most formal dress code and usually reserved for balls and state dinners. Wear a floor-length evening gown with long gloves and put your man in a white wing-collared shirt, white bow tie and vest, satin-striped trousers and a black tailcoat. (The daytime equivalent is typically called Morning Dress.)

How to Dress in Italy During Summer

We all know that traveling can be extremely pleasant but also very energy-consuming —  when you are on a trip,  the last thing you want to think about is what to wear on that particular day. It is perfectly reasonable to pay less attention to the dress code while on vacation, but let us just say that travel to Italy allows for a few exceptions.

Italians are famous all over the world for having a certain flair for fashion and elegance, and how could it be otherwise for people from the country of Valentino, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Gucci? This is the reason why, when traveling in Italy, you should definitely pay a little more attention to what you put on in the morning (at least if you don’t want to be recognized as a tourist from the very moment you step out of your hotel).

Here are a few tips on how to dress in Italy during summer , so you won’t be looked at with that “Oh-my-God-another-tourist” eye

Avoid Beach Clothes

Italy is the Land of Sun, and in summertime it is almost always very hot and sunny, but this does not mean that you are at the beach and can dress as you would do in Cancun. Especially when you are visiting big cities like Florence or Rome, or locations not right on the shore, shorts, crop tops, short skirts and flip flops are definitely not the proper outfit for the day.

“Here comes the tourist”

When packing for a trip to Italy , it can be hard to leave behind the favorites from your baseball cap collection, but bringing along Hawaiian shirts or very eye-catching clothes might not be the greatest thing to do. Try to leave your beloved Knicks t-shirt, safari hats, multi-pocket jackets and your beautiful yellow and green backpack in the closet back home. Attempt, instead, to observe the Italian style and try to dress in an elegant and understated way. And if you are planning on wearing sandals, don’t even think about pairing them with knee-high white (or, even worse, striped) socks! Please
just don’t do it.

Decent Clothing

Of course summer in Italy can be hot and the temptation to go around the cities in shorts and skimpy clothes is high but, as you probably know, Italy is full of religious sites and churches that are a big part of a trip’s must-sees. You need to be aware that you won’t be allowed in any of these places without decent clothing — “decent” means you should have your shoulders and knees covered and not wear anything excessively showy. The Vatican is definitely worth a jacket, trust us!

Italy is the place where the world’s most famous designers were born and get their inspiration so there is no doubt that when it comes to clothing, Italians do it better. If you really want to camouflage yourself and dress as the Italians do, but without spending all your money in Gucci and Prada boutiques, you are in the right place. In general, Italians have a natural tendency towards elegance so you will find classy and fashionable apparel in almost every shop in Italy.

We hope our suggestions on clothing have inspired you, but in case you still need some help, you can’t go wrong with our shopping tour of Milan!

Tips for Dress Code While Sightseeing Washington, DC

Expertly Guided Washington DC Tours

  • DC TRAVEL GUIDE

It’s always worth it to take some time in getting to know a place’s history, especially when it is your first time to travel there. It gives more meaning and depth to your travel experience when you visit places like museums and historical parks. That said, one of the best ways to see and get to know a new place as well is through its National Institutions.

Tips for Dress Code Etiquette when Touring National Institutions

So, perhaps, you’ve already decided to book a tour of the National Institutions in Washington D.C. What could be the next necessary thing to prepare now? The answer is simply what you will wear or pack in your luggage when you’re heading there.

The National Institutions in D.C., much like the Capitol or National Archives, do not have a very strict dress code to follow. This is true especially if you are just there as a tourist looking around and visiting the place. Other people might typically expect they are required to wear neat and professional business attire such as suits for men or blazers for women. However, this is not always the case.

The following are some of the things you might want to consider when choosing what to wear to your National Institutions tour. Additionally, to look even more presentable and respectable, there are online resources such as The Better Fit that educate you on how to dress appropriately for your body type.

Is there a dress code for a White House tour?

As mush as we know, there is no dress code to tour the White House, but due to the importance of the building, we recommend you dress neatly.

It’s Okay to Wear Casual

You will still be allowed inside the National Institutions even if you’re not wearing professional business or smart casual attire. Tourists are allowed to go with jeans or khaki shorts and simple shirts, as long as they still look respectable. That said, it will be best to avoid wearing short shorts or tank tops when going to these types of places.

Feel free to pack light and opt to include blouses or tops that may be casual yet still presentable enough. Wear jeans or skirts that are conservative.

Wear Comfortable Walking Shoes

There may be lots of walking when you’re a part of these tours. It is highly recommended that you wear your most comfortable shoes. For some, this could be tennis shoes, sneakers, or flats. Try to avoid heels or anything that will make you uncomfortable while walking around throughout the tour and may cause pain in your feet afterward.

Don’t Use Hats or Caps Inside

During summer, it will be very common for you to see people who wear hats or caps outside these institutions, especially if the sun is shining so brightly outside. However, when going inside the National Institutions, you may be asked to remove your hat or cap when passing by security personnel. This is only for security measures and it is best to follow through with their requests.

When In Doubt, Wear Business Casual

Many of the National Institutions, like the Smithsonian Institution complex , the National Portrait Gallery , and the Natural History Museum are around the same area. This gives you a highly conservative and political vibe.

If you are uncertain about what to wear, your final option could be something business casual. This could be a bit dressier than the normal tourist. Just make sure you have your utmost comfort in all your pieces.

Leave Your Backpacks or Large Bags

Similar to the restriction of not wearing hats or caps inside, your backpacks or large bags will not be allowed to be brought inside while you’re touring around these buildings or institutions. This is because of security measures. That said, you may opt to leave these in your tour bus or vehicle. You could trade your backpack with a small purse or handbag instead.

These are just some of the things to take note of in planning your outfit for your tours in the National Institutions in Washington, D.C. To reiterate, it is not at all required to wear business attire when visiting and touring around in the area. You may still wear your casual jeans and tops but ditch your short shorts, ripped shorts, and tank tops. The main goal is still to look respectable and conservative.

How to Dress for Milan and Lake Como

By Caroline Tell

Chiara Ferragni is wearing Calvin Klein dress and a Celine bag on the streets of Milan on June 22 2014 in Milan Italy.

While planning an early summer jaunt to Italy—a trip where outfits are as important as museums and dinner reservations—I suddenly found myself unsure of what to pack. For a trip that would take me through the fashion capital of Milan and into the luxury enclave of Lake Como , I feared I wasn’t up to snuff on Northern Italian style of dress and felt like my typical holiday wardrobe of black-on-white-on-black-on-black needed more pizzazz. Should I eschew my black wide-leg pants, Grecian slides, and cropped tanks to go full on sling-back heel, voluminous floral skirt, and petite doctor’s bag? A tiny cashmere cardigan draped elegantly around my neck? Or should I idle the day away in a Pucci caftan, Dolce & Gabbana pajama set, or Missoni striped dress? Should I rent a turquoise Vespa and zip around in a cacophonous mĂ©lange of head-to-toe prints, like one of Milan’s most famous dressers Anna Dello Russo?

I was lost.

I decided to enlist local experts and influencers who could speak to the fashion landscape of these destinations. The journalist J.J. Martin knows a thing or two about Milan’s dress code: A venerable expert on Italian taste, she documents the city’s aesthetic on her website and vintage shop La DoubleJ . “Milan style is crisp, buttoned up, and understated, but it also has a special flair,” said Martin, who launched a collection of colorful Milanese dresses using prints and silks from the archives of Lake Como's Mantero , the famous textile production house that also manufactures the label. “There’s always a touch of color, a flash of print, or something unusual that shows the person has style and paid attention to how they got dressed that morning.”

Not surprisingly, Martin references Miuccia Prada as the quintessential Milanese female archetype—the embodiment of the city’s chic kookiness, where women hold court at the Hotel Principe di Savoia, Dorchester Collection while peacocking in clashing prints and kitten heels. But for Italian blogger Chiara Ferragni, Milanese style is a bit more streamlined than that. In her world, it’s not unlike New York dressing —efficient, transitional, and modern. “Milanese style has its own uniqueness as it reflects the kind of lifestyle that people have here,” said Ferragni, whose website The Blonde Salad showcases her global fashion escapades. “This means men and women who are totally focused on their career, but balance it with a healthy lifestyle. They have to look elegant but not too formal, an office look but with a fashion twist.”

Ferragni says she feels most “Milan” when she’s wearing something as simple as a chic black pantsuit, sans blouse, tied together with a belt for added flair. She credits Versace, Moschino, Marni and, of course, Prada, with establishing the city’s look.

And who could mention Milanese style without referencing fashion’s vibrant Gucci craze, a groovy mash-up of colors and prints ripe for traversing the Corso Venezia. Certainly not Lisa Aiken, retail fashion director for luxury site Net-a-Porter , which happens to carry a full breadth of iconic Italian brands. “Gucci really does embrace this idea of individual dressing, and Milan has very much established itself as the individualist,” said Aitken, who attends Milan’s twice-annual fashion weeks. “While there is an element of glamour in Milanese style, it has this certain ‘effortless fashion’ about it, which really sets it apart from the rest of the globe.”

Now that I have a handle on my Milanese looks, I’d assume style simmers down on Lake Como, the summer haunt for the city’s noblest families as well as Hollywood royalty like George and Amal Clooney and John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. At least in New York, dressing in the Hamptons and Nantucket is a more relaxed affair than in the city itself. Not so fast, says Valentina De Santis, owner and chief executive officer of Lake Como’s iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo . She’s had the fortunate perspective of living both in Milan and on Lake Como and can say, without a doubt, that the latter is more formal. “Como is more chic, Milan is more trendy,” said De Santis, whose hotel recently began managing the region’s celebrated Villa Sola Cabiati. “Surprisingly, parts of Como are more fashionable than Milan. There are a lot of people from all around the world in Milan and it is generally more casual than Como. Como is a smaller town but rich in terms of heritage, and people tend to dress a bit fancier.”

De Santis says romantic caftans and oversized hats embody the wardrobes of Lake Como, as do custom silk dresses and scarves. The region is famous for its silk production and services the fabric to luxury brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel. De Santis does most of her shopping at a local Como boutique called Moresi that produces its own knitwear. “Their styles are chic and timeless,” said De Santis. “I wear these simple clothes with accessories from designers such as Valentino.”

With my newfound sunny vision of Como dressing, and a more nuanced understanding of a classic Milan wardrobe, I’m ready to attack my suitcase with rigor. I may not veer too far from my typical vacation style of dress, but perhaps I’ll throw in some more color and, at the very least, a little ladylike flair in the form of a fitted dress, tiny bag, and a colorful shoe. After all, if Dello Russo is any indication, when it comes to Northern Italy, more is certainly more.

Setting a Summer Dress Code

summer tour dresscode

It happens every year: As the weather gets hotter, employees start looking like they’re ready for Big Sur – instead of that big meeting.

Yikes. Time to set summer attire guidelines.

Why do you need a summer dress code?

Regardless of the season, your employees should present a positive image of your company. Individuals who wear clothing that’s too revealing or distracting reflects poorly on your brand.

But what your company and its employees consider “appropriate” may be two very different things. A summer dress code sets clear expectations for all parties, prevents problems and keeps the focus where it should be: on doing great work.

Tips for setting a summer dress code:

  • Consider your company culture. Your policy should align with your corporate culture and values. Determine if your summer dress code should be categorized as “formal,” “professional,” “business casual” or “casual,” and do a little research online for guidance as to what constitutes an acceptable dress code for your category.
  • Provide examples. To minimize confusion and misinterpretation, provide descriptions of acceptable and unacceptable clothing items. For example, the term “sleeveless” is open to a wide range of interpretations; a “three-inch-wide shoulder strap,” however, is crystal clear. Some organizations even put together a “look book” for employees to reference, so everyone can see what’s acceptable – and what’s not. Here are a few items to consider: – Footwear: Are open-toed shoes, sandals or flip flops permitted? – Prohibited clothing items: Are halter tops, crop tops, t-shirts and sweatpants acceptable? – Men’s shirts: Must they be tucked in and/or collared? – Women’s tops: Are sleeveless shirts permissible (and what does the term “sleeveless” mean in your organization)? – Bottoms: Are capris and shorts allowed? What are your guidelines for skirt length?
  • Put your dress code in writing. Your summer dress code policy should be clearly spelled out in your employee handbook – and made readily available in high-traffic areas of your workplace, as well as online.
  • Review the policy annually. Before you switch to your summer dress code, review it in team meetings and in company communications like your newsletter. New hires may not be as familiar with your policies as veteran employees, so share the information each year.

Employees pushing the envelope too far?

When the mercury rises, employees are more likely to test the limits of what’s considered “acceptable workplace attire.” But before you call out a worker for breaking your dress code, use the tips in this post to apply your dress code policy consistently and fairly.

Summer Wedding Dress Codes Decoded

By Melissa Liebling-Goldberg

Bridesmaids making their way down the aisle at Gabriella Campagna and Mario Milanas Wedding in Colombia

Your summer calendar is packed with weddings, but figuring out what to wear for each one can be daunting. Whether it’s traditional black tie or an out-there theme, you want to look good but not upstage the bride. What’s a girl to do (and wear)?

“The invitation is the first look into the wedding and can be more telling than you think, even if it doesn’t specify a dress code,” says Amanda Savory, owner and principal event planner of Bespoke Moments. The location is another good tip-off for how to calibrate your style. Tracey Lomrantz Lester, senior brand director of Intermix, explains, “In New York and the Northeast, formal and cocktail attire still seem to reign, but we’ve seen some more creative dress codes elsewhere.” For example, a West Coast wedding is likely to be less formal overall than an East Coast or Southern bash. Make sure to check if there are multiple events in the evening that you need separate outfits for (like Pippa Middleton ’s recent request for a change of outfit).

At their core, the dress codes are there to help you feel appropriate within the overall formality and vibe of the event. But there are some baseline principles to adhere to, regardless of what’s printed on the invite. Han Chong, founder and creative director of Self-Portrait, counsels, “Finding the right dress for a wedding requires the right balance. It should be sexy, but not vulgar, classic but not boring. You want attention but not to steal focus away from the bride.”

Black Tie/Formal Perhaps the most classic wedding dress code is black tie or its twin, formal. While men get off easy with a tuxedo, women have to decide if they want to go traditional with a long gown or take a more modern approach. “We love the idea of moving away from a traditional dress and embracing a chic jumpsuit or even sleek evening separates instead,” says Lester. “Wide-leg silk or crepe pants look so modern right now—Jonathan Simkhai and Cushnie et Ochs are both doing incredible iterations for us this season—and when you pair them with ‘wow’ heels and a pair of architectural earrings, the effect is just formal enough.” Chong, who is known for his wedding-ready creations, echoes the sentiment: “I think a modern way of approaching black tie doesn’t always mean having to wear a dress. I think a very chic look can be a jumpsuit with the right accessories.”

If you have to go with tradition because of the bride’s wishes or family demands, find a creative spin with the fabric choice. Emily Holt, owner of Hero Shop in San Francisco, gravitates toward “something colorful with personality, even if it’s a simple silhouette.” If you have a plain gown that you plan to re-wear to multiple weddings, create newness by accessorizing. “Accessories are always the answer when looking to dress up your look and separate your ensemble from everyone else,” says Rebecca Resnick-Gick, a bicoastal stylist and personal shopper.

Cocktail Attire You are good to wear a short dress or pants for cocktail attire, but you can push that too far. “If the dress code requests cocktail attire and you opt for a short dress, don’t go too short!” advises Savory (see: not angering the bride). Holt suggests looking beyond the classic cocktail sheath to something “short, fun, and flirty, or a great fluid pant and top with heels.” Lester points to the little lace dress from brands like Nicholas, Zimmermann, and Self-Portrait as a go-to that can be dressed up with “massive party earrings and strappy metallic sandals. Then put it in low-key mode with delicate gold jewelry and flat slides.”

Thematic Many of us panic a bit at an invitation for Moroccan-inspired nuptials or the ever-dreaded and murky word festive . Resnick-Gick has a client with “a three-day celebration in Majorca this summer that calls for a different theme every night.” As much as you might want to slough off the request and stick to a LBD for ease of packing, Savory suggests trying to adhere as much as you can: “A wedding takes an enormous amount of effort and time to plan. Every detail is thought out, including the dress code.” But she cautions that it doesn’t mean you have to turn it into a costume party: “If a wedding calls for festive or a theme, you don’t want to go overboard or borderline tacky. Simple is better in this case.”

For festive, stick with an outfit that could realistically work for any dress code short of black tie. Lester advises, “You can never go wrong in a simple cocktail dress—something that really walks the line between casual and dressy, which feels particularly appropriate for a summer wedding.” Try to look at strict themes as an opportunity to experiment with a style you would normally never try. If you aren’t in the market for a full theme look, you can pick a simple dress that fits with the event’s overall color palette and add clever accessories. And after all, as Holt points out, “Dressing up adds to a party’s atmosphere, and it makes it stand apart from any other night.”

Outdoor The photos of a beach or garden wedding are inevitably stunning, but how to dress for humidity and uneven terrain, especially if it’s still a formal occasion? “In Miami and the Southeast, our clients are coming in for ‘Black Tie Beach,’ which we’re really advising is a stunning dress in a bold print or color, with sand-friendly shoes, of course,” says Lester. An embellished evening slide is a perfect way to maintain the occasion’s formality while keeping your balance.

Think through your dress choice as well. A maxi dress may sound like a perfect pick, but a tea-length dress will avoid dragging in the sand or dirt. Focus on breathable, natural fabrics and lighter colors to fit in with the environment. And don’t forget a top layer for when warm days turn into cooler nights. Chong recommends a tuxedo or leather jacket for a modern take.

Informal “Informal definitely doesn’t mean don’t try,” says Lester. And while not every bride wants a gala wedding, it doesn’t mean that you can’t be chic in celebration of the big day. Resnick-Gick defines informal for her clients as “a great-fitting trouser, a sandal, and maybe a blouse or camisole. It’s effortless, yet still put together.” Or wear a pretty day dress with a fun flat instead of a heel. “It’s a great opportunity to wear the 2017 version of an easy summer dress,” suggests Lester. “Something in a pretty print with a cool detail, like a cold shoulder or an asymmetrical hemline.”

Unspecified What to do when the invitation says the time and place and nothing about a dress code? Start by doing your research. Savory suggests checking the wedding website for more information or searching the venue on Instagram. “By searching the venue’s profile or geotag, you will get a good idea of the style of the venue and be able to see what other guests have worn to past weddings. If you want to dig further you can search the various hashtags from [other] weddings.”

But if you truly can’t figure out any further details and the bride gives you the old “wear what you want” line, Holt says, “You can’t go wrong with a simple tailored dress and a classic heel or nice flat.” The slip dress is a favorite for this summer for its simplicity and versatility; pack a few accessory options and decide once you’ve arrived how flashy or understated you want to make your look. Resnick-Gick counsels, “You’d always rather be a bit more dressed up versus too underdressed for an event.”

Managing Summer Dress Codes (with Policy Examples!)

We've all been out of the office for so long at this point. We’ve all gotten used to working from home and many have all but abandoned traditional office wear as a result. Yet, the time to return to the office is upon us. As workers start to venture back into the in-person workplace, now is a good time to rethink your dress code and politics. Because it’s been so long for so many of us, reminding might be in order when it comes to appropriate office dress. This is the case especially in the summer when temperatures start to climb. Plus, COVID has changed the working world in so many ways. After showing up in t-shirts and other casual wear on Zoom, does it make sense anymore to require formal office attire? Here are some answers to burning questions like these and more for all things office attire and dress codes in 2022.

How COVID has impacted workwear in the office

After years of working in home in our comfiest clothes, the comfort continues with the rise of “workleisure” attire. As The Wall Street Journal explains, brands are scaling back their suit productions. They're pivoting towards more stretchy versions, and labeling them as workleisure. “They look like khakis, but they feel more like sweatpants,” Nick Rendic, global head of design at Dockers, told the newspaper . The trend goes beyond just pants. Think yoga pants that double as slacks and fancier versions of Birkenstocks and other comfortable footwear that can be found in offices across the country. While many might celebrate a comfier interpretation of workwear, the shift has still left many people confused. Russ Ferguson, a lawyer in Charlotte, explained to The Wall Street Journal that “if our clients go to a more casual dress code, I don’t want to be the guy in the suit.” The shift in norms that COVID has brought to workwear is, while welcome, still a confusing one.

Rethinking the in-office dress code for summer

That’s why now is a good time to rethink your office dress code for this new era and communicate it to your employees. This takes the guesswork out of what will and won’t fly in the new working world we’ve found ourselves in. When it comes to rethinking your office dress code broadly, the thing to remember is that across industries, things have moved in a more casual direction. That said, what’s considered business casual at a tech startup and what’s considered business casual in the banking industry are 2 different things. If you have to update your broader dress code before you can get to your summer dress code in particular, remember that the more information you offer, the better. List out generally accepted attire that the company considers to meet its business casual requirements. Also outline attire that doesn’t make the cut.

Across industries, things have moved in a more casual direction.

Then, consider changing things based on the situation. What’s required for working from home versus meeting clients in person are likely 2 different things. Outline all of the different applications and interpretations of the dress code based on situations from client meetings to company picnics.

What is a summer dress code and why is it important?

Speaking of picnics, summer is finally here! That means increasing temperatures and, often, retreating clothing coverage. The changes that COVID has brought to workwear (essentially a giant step in the direction of casual) naturally apply to any season. But summer has been the trickiest dress code season since well before the pandemic. A summer dress code is 1 that interprets your office’s dress code specifically for the summer season. Few people are going to try to wear sandals to work in the winter, but they might in the summer. Is that acceptable? These are exactly the questions that a summer dress code should answer. Without a summer dress code, confusion can abound. People can show up to work inadvertently dressed inappropriately simply because they’re trying to stay cool. Once you have a summer dress code in place (more on that in a bit), it’s a good practice to announce it and remind people of it annually as the season approaches.

How to manage a summer dress code in the workplace

The first thing to remember about your summer dress code (and dress codes in general) is that people no longer identify with only 2 binary sexes or genders. While dress codes have traditionally broken down appropriate office attire based on 2 sexes, it’s best to avoid that now. This doesn’t mean that you can’t outline what’s an appropriate skirt length or what kinds of ties are acceptable. You can, you just don’t have to sort the rules by sex or gender. Now, onto what your summer dress code should do. First, it should outline what is considered summer. Many companies opt to declare the season as running from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but this can vary depending on your company’s location and environment. Here’s an example of how you could word this: “In addition to the broader dress code that we observe, has a summer dress code as well. We consider summer to be between and .” Next, your summer dress code policy should clarify how final interpretations of appropriate dress are made. Are those decisions left up to managers? An example of a way to word this could be: “Our summer dress code is intended as guidance for what is considered appropriate summer workwear. The examples that the policy provides are just that — examples. Managers and supervisors are responsible for making final decisions about appropriate dress both during the summer and the rest of the year.”

List of examples of appropriate summer dress for the office

Finally, give examples of what is (and isn’t!) considered appropriate dress. Common examples of appropriate summer dress include:

  • Branded company attire
  • T-shirts without graphics
  • Denim pants
  • Capri pants
  • Knee-length dresses and skirts
  • Athletic shoes
  • Dressy sandals

Examples of clothing that is considered inappropriate summer office wear include:

  • Cut-off shorts
  • Sleeveless shirts, halter tops, tank tops
  • Flip flop sandals
  • Ripped or frayed clothing

Ultimately, it’s about deciding what is and isn’t right for your company. These are simply examples. You’re encouraged to create a summer dress code that works best for your business and the employees who keep it running.

Travis Kelce confirms he’ll travel to Europe for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour: ‘I gotta go support’

T ravis Kelce’s summer plans include a trip across the Atlantic to “support” girlfriend Taylor Swift on the European leg of her record-breaking Eras Tour.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, confirmed to “Entertainment Tonight” on Tuesday that he will be joining the pop star, also 34, when she hits the road again next month.

“Oh, you know I gotta go support,” the athlete told the outlet when asked if he would be “packing [his] bags” soon.

Kelce noted that he is more than happy to repay the favor after the “Cruel Summer” singer attended so many of his NFL games throughout the season.

“We are both very career-driven. I think we both love what we do and any chance that I can show my support to her — knowing that she has shown me all the support in the world throughout the season — its just been an amazing experience getting to know Tay,” he said.

Although Kelce didn’t reveal which cities he plans to join Swift in, he hinted that her shows in London and Paris were “cant-miss” concerts.

“I’ll tell you what, I think the London shows. I think she’s at Wembley [Stadium] eight times? Which is mind-blowing that she can do that many shows in one stadium and fill that thing up,” he said.

the taypraise never stops đŸ„č pic.twitter.com/Slc9lhy8yE

Kelce, who played an NFL game against the Detroit Lions at the same venue in 2015, joked that he couldn’t even fill the space for a single day.

“And London is always an amazing city and Paris is a beautiful city and she will be all over Europe,” he added. “There won’t be a bad show, I promise you that.”

Sources previously told the US Sun that the three-time Super Bowl champion would be pulling out all the stops for Swift during her days off in each European city.

The NFL star reportedly booked ultra-luxurious hotels and restaurants for them in France and Italy to enjoy during their downtime — including a $6,300-per-night penthouse in the City of Love and a $12,000-a-night hotel in Rome.

“He wants to take her on romantic getaways to have her relax and go discover those nice cities and European romantic places together,” an insider close to Kelce told the outlet.

While it’s unclear how long Kelce will be joining the superstar on the road, we will not be at her shows in Stockholm in mid-May due to schedule conflicts.

As Swift takes the stage in Sweden, Kelce will be hosting the 2024 installment of  Kelce Jam , a music festival featuring performances from Lil Wayne, Diplo and 2 Chainz.

The “Catching Kelce” alum has already traveled to several different countries since he started dating the 14-time Grammy winner last summer.

Despite his busy football season, Kelce flew down to Argentina last November to watch his leading lady take the stage. Once his season was over, the NFL star made brief trips to Australia and Singapore to catch a couple more shows.

The jet-setting pair also spent some time in the Bahamas last month as Swift lapped up her last bit of down time before her hectic tour schedule resumes.

Travis Kelce Reveals His Summer Plans With Taylor Swift—and They’re Anything But Cruel

Travis kelce gave an update on whether he plans to join taylor swift in europe for the international leg of her record-breaking eras tour..

Can Travis Kelce go where Taylor Swift goes? The answer is a resounding "duh."

In fact, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end confirmed he plans to join the "Cruel Summer" singer in Europe when the international leg of her Eras Tour picks back up in May.

"You know I gotta go support," he told  Entertainment Tonight in an interview published April 2 . "You know it."

And as for which shows he'll be attending? Travis hinted that Taylor's stops in London and Paris will be unmissable.

"The London shows, I think she's at Wembley eight times," Kelce gushed, "which is mind-blowing that she can do that many shows in one stadium and fill that thing up. I played at Wembley once and I don't even think we filled that thing up."

He went on to note that "Paris is a beautiful city" as well, adding, "She'll be all over. There won't be a bad show, I promise you that."

But Travis noted that his appearance at the shows shouldn't come as a huge surprise. After all, Taylor  flew all over the world to cheer him on during the football season.

"We're both very career-driven," the NFL star explained. "We both love what we do, and any chance that I can show my support to her—and knowing that she's showing me all the support in the world throughout the season—it's just been an amazing experience getting to know Tay."

"That's my everyday playlist," he said of the "Anti-Hero" singer's music. "Not just my game day."

July 2023: So, Make the Friendship Bracelets

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce 's love story began in July 2023, when the singer's Eras Tour made a stop at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo.

As a huge Swiftie, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end caught the show with hopes of giving Taylor a friendship bracelet with his number on it . However, he failed to complete the pass due to her pre-show rituals.

"I was disappointed that she doesn't talk before or after her shows because she has to save her voice for the 44 songs that she sings," Travis shared on the July 26 episode of his  New Heights podcast. "So, I was a little butt-hurt I didn't get to hand her one of the bracelets I made for her."

Summer 2023: This Is Him Trying

After publicly recounting his fumble—a move Taylor would later describe as "metal as hell" —Travis decided to shoot his shot and invite the Grammy winner to watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium.

"I threw it out there, I threw the ball in her court," he shared on The Pat McAfee Show . "I told her, you know, 'I've seen you rock the stage in Arrowhead, you might have to come see me rock the stage in Arrowhead and see which one's a little more lit.' So, we'll see what happens in the near future."

August 2023: Enchanted to Meet You

Travis was rocking a mustache—which he debuted in August during training camp—when he was first introduced to Taylor .

As he later noted of the era, "That 'stache and the 87 jersey was pretty iconic there for a little bit, and I had it when I met Taylor for the first time."

September 2023: Sparks Fly

By early September, a source close to the situation told E! News that Travis and Taylor were " texting and talking here and there ."

"It's been very low-key," the insider explained, "as he's been in season."

September 2023: Cheer Captain

Accepting Travis' invite, Taylor joined the athlete's mom Donna Kelce at Arrowhead Stadium to watch him and the Chiefs take on the Chicago Bears. After the game, Taylor and Travis were seen packing PDA at a local bar .

Though folklore had it that it was the couple's first in-person meeting, the "Karma" singer later clarified the two had spent a "significant amount of time" getting to know each other beforehand.

As Taylor noted, "We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date."

October 2023: Team Up

As an indication that the relationship was heating up, Taylor brought her squad —including friends Blake Lively , Ryan Reynolds , Sophie Turner , Hugh Jackman , Sabrina Carpenter and Antoni Porowski —to watch the Chiefs play against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

October 2023: It's Nice to Have a Friend

Another sign that Travis could be The 1 ? Taylor started bonding with Brittany Mahomes —the wife of Travis' BFF and teammate Patrick Mahomes —in and outside of NFL games .

October 2023: Welcome to New York

The couple took their romance to TV, making a surprise appearance on the Oct. 14 episode of Saturday Night Live . Their Big Apple takeover also included the after-party for the NBC sketch show and a date night at the Waverly Inn .

Dress code: Summer Chic at the wedding

Reading Time 3 Minutes

Summer Chic

Dress code: Summer Chic

The name says it all: at the Dress code 'Summer Chic' you are expected to appear summery and chic at the wedding. Want to know more about this dress code? In this article, we tell you everything you need to know about this style.

Summer Chic

What is Summer Chic?

Summer Chic is an accessible Dress Code, with plenty of room to contribute your own style. You simply follow the guidelines airy, light, cheerful and soft, with a Chic Touch. So don't run straight to the shop for a new outfit. Most people own dozens of outfits that meet these 'requirements'. Is your chosen outfit too Casual? Use accessories to make your outfit extra summery. Think of a cute scarf, or colourful earrings.

Summer Chic

Summer chic for women

A jaunty skirt or dress is quintessentially Summer Chic. Pair the outfit with a pair of cute heels, sandals or classy trainers and voilĂ ; you have put together the perfect Summer Chic outfit. Of course, it is not necessary to wear a dress. If you feel better in trousers, that's a great option too. For example, pair wide, linen trousers with a white shirt, or tight trousers with a typical summer blouse and classic, gold earrings. Wear what suits you!

Summer Chic

Summer chic for men

A typical men's outfit in this dress code consists of light tones and loose fabrics. Think of a white blouse paired with beige trousers. On a warm day, shorts also fit within the dress code. In this case, choose smart shorts and combine them with a nice, chic shirt. Finish the outfit with nice accessories. Think of a light scarf, sunglasses or a cool belt.

Summer Chic

Outfit inspiration

Photos are one of the most important sources of inspiration when putting together outfits. For example, check out one of the many 'Summer Chic' boards on Pinterest . Type in the search term and see hundreds of examples of great outfits. Of course, it is also possible to get help from an expert. In this case, it is best to visit a clothing shop where the priority is advice and personal attention.

Summer Chic

Tune in to the accommodation

Besides taking into account the dress code, match the outfit to the accommodation. A wedding by the sea requires a different choice of clothes than a wedding in the city. Are you hesitating between two outfits? Then decide which outfit fits best based on the accommodation.

Summer Chic

Shopping for a new outfit is fun, but not essential. A nice outfit can also be created without (big) budget be put together. View and compare mood boards with your wardrobe and decide which items match the Dresscode. Does the chosen outfit not feel Summer or chic enough? Then just buy some (cheap) accessories to complete the outfit.

What do Balmoral Castle visitors get on the ÂŁ150 tour?

As visitors are allowed to tour parts of the aberdeenshire castle used by hthe royal family for the first time this summer, here's what's included in the ÂŁ150 entrance price..

Royal watchers can take a deeper glimpse inside Balmoral Castle for the first time this year, with tours set to kick off this summer.

Visitors to the historic building have previously only been able to see the grounds of the castle and its ballroom. But from July, other parts of the castle will be able to be visited for the first time since it was completed in 1855.

A statement on the website said: “You will learn about the origins of the castle and how it has been loved by generations of the Royal Family . Travel through time from the purchase of the Balmoral by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, through to present day, where you can see how rooms within the castle are used today by their Majesty’s The King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family.”

Guided tours will be available from 1 July to 4 August, before the King and Queen arrive for their summer break in Aberdeenshire. Details on what rooms will be able to be visited are scarce but Yahoo News UK has contacted Balmoral Castle for more information.

How to book

Small group castle interior tours are being offered for ÂŁ100 on the Balmoral Castle website . For ÂŁ150 visitors will also get an afternoon tea on top of the tour. However the tour is an adult-only experience. Tickets are limited to just 40 tickets per day, with each group restricted to 10 people.

Tickets were initially selling fast for the interior tours after they were announced, with many of the earlier dates in the summer window sold out. On Wednesday afternoon, visitors trying to buy tickets had to wait, as they were put in an online queue due to high demand.

The ballroom

The ballroom in Balmoral Castle has previously been part of limited tours and will again feature in the new tour. It is the largest room in the castle and is used by the Royal Family for large gatherings and dances. The ballroom was the last room to be completed. Underneath the carpet is the original yew wooden floor, which has seen many dances.

Charles’s paintings

Charles, whose paintings will be on display at the castle, is an avid painter and has previously spoke fondly of his hobby, saying it “transports me into another dimension”.

His art has been displayed at exhibitions, “represent more than anything else, my particular form of ‘photograph album’ and, as such, means a great deal to me,”, the King added. He added: “It all requires the most intense concentration and, consequently, is one of the most relaxing and therapeutic exercises I know."

Afternoon tea

Visitors to Balmoral Castle can already enjoy an afternoon tea but those on the castle interior tour will need to pay an extra ÂŁ50 for afternoon tea during their experience. The castle restaurant provides the afternoon tea, which consists of a selection of sandwiches, scones and cakes. Vegetarian and gluten free versions are also offered.

The grounds

The grounds of Balmoral Castle is full of trees and grassland that offers visitors some of Scotland’s most scenic walking routes. Among those is Albert’s Pyramid Walk, where visitors can see the Prince Albert Pyramid and other commemorative cairns. The castle’s water garden is also a place for animal lovers to spot some of the local wildlife that visit the castle.

The gardens

The gardens have been expanded and improved by the Royal Family throughout the years after they were started under the supervision of Prince Albert. The garden was devised between 1923 and 1925 by Queen Mary and have since been extended to some three acres.

They house a range of Victorian glasshouses and the conservatory. Visitors will be able to see new planting designs that have begun under the King’s guidance. This year a new Thistle Maze, the Celtic Ballroom Maze and new topiary elements will be added, while new trees, shrub and 8,000 daffodils are being planted.

The exhibitions

On display at the castle will be a collection of Charles’s watercolour paintings depicting scenery at Balmoral, Highgrove and Sandringham. There will also be a display of outfits worn by the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family.

What Do People Wear in Italy?

Fashion in Italy is the same as other parts of the world. There are a variety of Italian attire style preferences to reflect the tastes of different personalities.

With the popularity of athleisure, over the years Italian fashion along with that of other European countries , has become more “casual”, not to be confused with gym clothing.

However, casual or any other clothing in Italy generally tends to differ from some countries in the sense that people wear items that are fitted to their bodies. A tailored look is the true secret to the Italian everyday fashion observed by visitors.

As with most destinations, practical sense applies. Leave the beachwear for the beach because it doesn’t translate well to streetwear in a city. Unless you’re actually headed to the gym, you may want to consider not wearing gym attire.

While it’s not uncommon to wonder what do Italians wear , it’s also important to remember that the best clothing to pack on any trip is what makes you feel most comfortable, both physically and emotionally.

What’s important is that you choose clothing when you travel that makes you feel good when you look in the mirror because confidence is key to style in Italy and everywhere else.

Insiders do note that Italy’s clothing style may vary from the north to the south and between generations.

  • Rome and the south may be considered to be more traditional with local trends.
  • In Venice , the weather might dictate the clothing over trends, especially when it rains.
  • Milan and the north, locals may have a very fashionable and sometimes over-the-top style, particularly when it comes to fashion week.
  • Overly-revealing clothing isn’t recommended when entering religious buildings.

What are the best shoes for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets. They’re BRUTAL when you’re on your feet sightseeing all day. Choose form and function over fashion!

While great to look at, stone streets aren’t always the easiest to walk on and can make for sore feet even if you don’t normally have discomfort. Depending on the city, these streets can also be hilly, slippery when wet, and uneven.

Popular shoe options include (click each item below for suggested styles):

  • Ankle Boots for spring and autumn
  • Ballet Flats and Loafers to dress up or for warm weather
  • Waterproof Boots for rain and snow
  • Comfortable Sightseeing shoes for year round visits
  • Cute Comfortable Summer Sandals

Popular cities like Venice or Rome are made for walking, so be sure to choose comfortable shoes . Consider waterproof leather boots for the colder months and simple, comfortable, canvas shoes for the warmer months.

Locals like to dine out with style and elegance so you may want to consider bringing some slightly dressier shoes if that suits your style. When deciding what to wear when traveling to Italy, avoid heels because they’ll leave you feeling uncomfortable.

What Should I Wear in Italy?

The most important factors in planning what you should and shouldn’t wear to Italy are your activities and the weather .

Always, always, always check the weather forecast before your trip. Nothing will ruin your trip faster than being unprepared with the wrong clothing for the weather.

Once you’ve researched the weather, you can focus on creating a capsule travel wardrobe , which should easily fit in a carryon suitcase with the help of packing cubes to compress your clothing.

Below you’ll find helpful seasonal clothing tips and suggested packing lists with capsule wardrobe ideas that you can use as a guideline to prepare for a trip to Italy:

What to Wear in Italy in Spring

What is the weather in italy in spring (march, april, may).

Italian spring is beautiful–you can spot flowers and green everywhere. Spring may be considered the best season to plan a trip to Italy, as the temperatures are more moderate and the crowds lighter when compared to summer.

Spring in Italy can be unpredictable. The temperatures can vary from chilly to warm and sometimes even hot, from a minimum of 15°C/59°F to a maximum of 28°C/82°F. When it rains, and during early morning hours, the temperature can go down to 10°C/50°F. Checking the weather forecast before any trip is always recommended.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in Spring?

With fluctuating weather in the months of spring, layers are an absolute must! For example, what to wear in Italy in May will be different from what to wear in Italy in April.

Always choose 10 to 15 items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested spring Italy packing list below.)

Look for bright and light colors during this finicky season; when it’s sunny, it’s very warm. Jeans are a good choice or skirts in light fabrics.

Match your bottoms with a quality tee or pretty blouse, and don’t forget a sweater and light jacket for layering on cold days and evenings. Bring a waterproof outerwear item, such as a light trench coat, for unexpected rainstorms.

Choose one of these stylish travel raincoats for women to keep you dry!

Accessories always make an outfit but some may choose to avoid expensive jewelry or sunglasses. Consider bringing a sunhat for hot days.

What shoes should I wear in Italy in spring?

As with your clothes, plan your shoes based on the weather and your planned activities. Choose no more than two to three pairs of shoe in neutral colors that can mix and match with all your clothing. We suggest comfortable sightseeing shoes , activity shoes, and a second pair of sightseeing shoes if you’ll be experiencing mixed weather.

Make sure your sightseeing shoes are broken-in properly. Opt for a pair that is comfortable and you can wear it for hours without discomfort.

Popular sightseeing styles include sneakers ( Supergas tend to be a popular option) or waterproof shoes. Note that the best waterproof shoes are not made out of rubber; instead choose leather ankle boots , which are the best shoe option for travel to Europe in spring.

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats , loafers , or boots can be good options should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip. Alternatively, bring closed toe wedges if you prefer a shoe with a heel.

What to Wear in Italy in Summer

What is the weather in italy in summer (june, july, august).

Summer in Italy is insanely hot: temperatures can reach 35°C/ 95°F or higher. Not only is the heat strong but the air can feel muggy and humid. Tropical-type showers may occur in some areas such as Venice . For example, what to wear in Italy in June will be pretty similar to your July and August wardrobe.

Be careful to protect yourself during the hottest hours of the day by wearing sunblock and a sun hat .

Quince European Linen Button Front Dress | Gevomir Halter Neck Summer Dress

What clothes should I wear in Italy in summer?

When deciding how to dress in Italy in the summer, dress comfortably with loose and light clothes. Light dresses might be the most comfortable this time of year, particularly in places such as Rome where the heat can feel unbearable.

Skirts , cropped trousers , (dressy) shorts with a nice top or a dressy blouse and a hat will complete the look.

Choose light colored clothing to avoid scorching in the blaring heat. Cotton, linen , and rayon fabrics are best.

Make sure you’re not wearing revealing clothing when you visit religious sites. Covered shoulders and below the knee clothing is recommended but not enforced. While you may not be stopped from entering the Vatican or St Mark’s

Basilica, it’s respectful to follow local traditions. Opt for a midi or maxi dress below your knees and a light wrap that you can place around your shoulders if wearing a sleeveless top.

Planning to visit religious sites? Find out what to wear to the Vatican and other religious buildings!

Always choose ten-fifteen items of clothing that can mix and match. This should include two outer layers that can be worn together to protect you from the elements.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. (See suggested summer Italy packing list below.)

What shoes should I wear in Italy in summer?

Depending on trends, comfortable sneakers may be your first choice for all day sightseeing, but if you prefer to air your toes on hot days, bring comfortable sandals . Note that flip-flops or beach sandals aren’t common away from the seaside. Pack a light jacket and cardigan for cooler days and evenings.

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats , loafers , or wedges can be good options should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip.

What to Wear in Italy in Fall

What is the weather in italy in fall (september, october, november).

Autumn does not differ much from spring. Temperatures fluctuate from 15°C/59°F to 24°C/75°F and it rains quite a lot, so what to wear in Italy in September will be different than what to wear in Italy in October. In the plains in the north of Italy, you can experience foggy days, which are quite fascinating in cities like Venice or Milan .

What clothes should I wear in Italy in fall?

In September and autumn, you should pack the same items mentioned in the spring section above. These two seasons are similar and the only variations may be an umbrella and trench coat . Layers are essential especially as the weather begins to cool.

The key colors of the season are brown, purple, gray, and black, but you can always choose lighter colors to provide relief from warmer weather.

When in doubt, plan a monochrome travel wardrobe consisting of mostly black, a stunning handbag, and silk printed scarf.

Clothing should also be versatile and work for all of your trip activities. Rather than Google search “dress Italy,” follow our guide on how to choose fabrics appropriate for the weather. (See suggested fall Italy packing list below.)

Follow this easy packing solution when traveling in between seasons!

What shoes should I wear in Italy in fall?

As with your clothes, plan your shoes based on the weather and your planned activities. Choose no more than two-three pairs of shoe in neutral colors that can mix and match with all your clothing.

Make sure your sightseeing shoes are broken in properly. Opt for a pair that is comfortable and you can wear it for hours without discomfort.

Popular styles include light brogues, sneakers ( Supergas are very popular) or waterproof shoes are essential. Note that the b\est waterproof shoes are not made out of rubber; instead choose leather ankle boots , which are the best shoe option for travel to Europe in fall.

If it will be cold during your trip, opt for one of these chic leather boots – they’re waterproof but look good, too!

While not recommended for all day sightseeing, ballet flats are also a good option should you want a dressier pair of shoes on your trip for warmer days or evenings. Alternatively, bring closed toe wedges for a dressy alternative.

What to Wear in Italy in Winter

What is the weather in italy in winter (december, january, february).

As mentioned before, winters can be quite cold. In the north, it snows a lot and sometimes it’s difficult to move around the city without slipping. The south is warmer but it snows at least once a year. Temperatures range from 10°C/50°F down to -8°C/18°F. And where the climate is humid, it’s colder–you can feel it in your bones.

What clothes should I wear in Italy in winter?

Pack a pair of warm gloves , a thick scarf , and a hat . If you are planning to go to the north, I suggest a padded winter coat and layer of merino wool thermals , too.

In the south, you can take a winter coat or a quilted jacket. The rule in winter is to dress in layers as temperatures might change during the day, so pack some long-sleeve tops, warm sweaters , and cardigans .

A waterproof rain jacket can be useful, but I would suggest taking an umbrella, as it is more handy and fashionable.

The secret to packing light in winter is thermal underwear for women – these are a must!

What shoes should I wear in Italy in winter?

If it snows during your trip, opt for a pair of warm winter boots . If it will be cold and rainy without snow, opt for cute and versatile waterproof leather boots instead.

Waterproof sneakers or leather sneakers are also an option for mild days. (Tip: wear skin colored stockings underneath for discreet warmth around your ankles.)

What is the Best Luggage for Italy?

So the hard part’s out of the way; after much turmoil you’ve finally perfected your travel wardrobe and created a chic capsule collection – now it’s time to get packing! Which luggage will work best for you?

what-to-wear-in-italy

Travelpro Maxlite 5 19″ Softside Expandable Luggage | Delsey Paris Helium Aero Hardside Expandable Luggage

There are various things to consider when choosing the best luggage for Europe including a difference in carry on size, strict weight restrictions, mobility on the cobblestone streets, and long flights of stairs.

The best suitcase to have when traveling Italy can be a personal choice. Some prefer a hardside suitcase or softsuide suitcase , but it’s best to choose something between 19” to 20” for most European airlines, and ideally with four castors. The suitcase should be divided into two compartments (not just one big compartment) for easy packing. These are easy to travel with on bumpy terrain.

The best international carry on luggage can also entail your personal onboard item. The allowed personal item carry on size is generally 40cm x 30cm x 15cm. When choosing a personal item , ensure it has sufficient organizational compartments for your flight essentials, including an area for your devices, like a tablet or laptop.

For a European carry on size bag, a backpack is always a safe option. It’s also the perfect fit for those of us who prefer to travel hands-free.

Compass Rose Compression Packing Cubes

Depending on how many days or weeks you’re traveling, you may want to use luggage organizers such as packing cubes , which allow optimum use of the space in your luggage, keeping everything organized and in place during your travels, and making the task of unpacking and repacking simple and stress-free.

As you’re headed to fashionable Europe, use an equally stylish carry-on , such as the Osprey Ozone , which is a personal favorite. Keep in mind that most of Europe’s budget airlines have a carry-on bag allowance of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm. Always check your airlines individual baggage rules and regulations in advance.

A last thing to remember about luggage is that moving from plane to train or bus means there will be moments you won’t be with your suitcase. A wise security measure is to use a luggage tracking device . The Apple Airtags are highly popular for iPhone users and can be monitored through your Find My app, while Android users swear by the Galaxy SmartTag . Another popular one is the TilePro luggage tracker which works with both iOS and Android.

When traveling to Italy, you’ll need some of the standard, essential toiletries, including:

  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Moisturizer (face and body)
  • Makeup (we recommend keeping it simple: mascara, concealer, and a lip tint that doubles as a blush)
  • Hair ties and bobby pins
  • Dry shampoo

Worried that all your toiletries, makeup, skincare, and hair styling tools won’t fit into your suitcase? Read these tips on how to travel size toiletries to learn how to make the most of limited space without sacrificing your routine!

We recommend you take the most important products in travel containers like these and try to either buy basics like shampoo and shower gel in Europe or use the items provided by hotels.

Also, consider your makeup–in many European cities, women opt for natural makeup focusing on a well groomed but not over-the-top appearance.

While a daily salon blow out isn’t necessary, be mindful of your hair and makeup. Find out if it’s necessary to bring a travel blow dryer here .

When choosing your styling tools, choose items that have dual voltage and bring along a travel adapter for all your electronics. Just make sure to add all these items to your backpacking packing list for Europe so you don’t forget them.

Check out our guide to toiletries for more tips!

What Should I NOT Pack for Italy?

One unexpected issue that many travelers discover once they get to Europe are the cobblestone streets.

In addition, there is an Italian dress code in churches and other religious centers. You should cover your shoulders with a shawl or scarf, and wear bottoms that cover your knees.

Are jeans appropriate to wear in Italy?

While Europeans tend to dress up more than Americans, you still can wear jeans in Italy. However, avoid acid wash and extremely distressed denim and opt for medium-dark blues and blacks. Black skinny jeans always look chic in Europe!

Are leggings okay to wear in Italy?

Some travelers love wearing leggings for comfort, but they’re often too casual looking as pants for Italy. If you’re a big fan of leggings, consider pairing a black pair with long tunics during the spring, or wearing them under dresses and skirts in fall and winter.

What are the Best Shoes to Wear in Italy?

Based on reader recommendations, we suggest tall boots for winter and wedges for summer; other styles can be used interchangeably throughout the year.

Depending on the weather, flat ankle boots , boat shoes, or driving mocs are other top recommendations amongst our readers. They’re classic options and make the perfect alternative to ballet flats , especially if you need a little more room for soft insoles.

Italy Travel Tips

Before you head on your tour of Italy , check out these frequently asked questions on traveling to Italy.

What’s the best time of year to visit Italy?

Italy is a wonderful destination to visit year round but many agree that Spring is the best time to visit Italy. You’ll experience less crowds and moderate weather in comparison to summer when it’s scorching hot and busy.

Note that some places close in August for the local vacation period.

Weather in Italy

As you plan your packing list for Italy, keep in mind that the north is normally cold in winter and warm and humid in summer. Cities located on a higher altitude are more windy and cold, but you can enjoy a summer heat, thanks to the sun.

The south is characterized for being warmer, year-round. In some areas, it doesn’t even snow! Rome and the south are very hot in the summer 35°C/95°F (May-September), but it can be enjoyable thanks to the sea breeze. Winters are warmer and not as cold, with better weather than in the north.

Never travel without checking the weather forecast as this will be your ultimate packing guide for Italy. Remember that each city will have its own weather pattern so check the forecast for all the destinations you plan to visit.

Use websites such as Accuweather or Holiday Weather for advanced forecasts and don’t forget to check the weather one week and three days before your trip as mother nature doesn’t run on a tight schedule.

Sunglasses are a must every season; the sun seemingly never stops shining on the Italian peninsula.

What are the best accommodations in Italy?

We love Airbnb for accommodation in Italy. Sign up here for a free $40 credit!

I prefer to book “the entire home” instead of opting for shared accommodation on Airbnb. Aside from safety, I also like to feel like I’m living in the destination. It’s a small taste of local life plus you get more amenities than you would at a hotel such as a kitchen and washing machine.

Read these Airbnb tips for more info!

If you prefer the convenience and comfort of a hotel room, I like using both Agoda.com and Hotels.com . Tip: Hotels.com gives you a free night for every ten nights you book!

For hostels, we recommend Hostelworld and Hostelbookers . Always read the reviews before booking to get the best idea if the hostel is right for you. Some are quiet and family friendly while others are known for their party atmosphere.

Not sure about staying at a hostel? Read this.

Transportation

For flights, I like booking through Travelocity or Cheapoair (whichever one’s cheapest). Although I prefer Travelocity because they have a 24 hour money back guarantee.

To maximize your vacation time, fly into the city where you’re starting your trip and out of the city where your trip ends. Many times it’s the same price and saves you from having to spend extra time and money to go back to where you started your trip.

How do I get around Italy?

Italy has several great transportation options that make it easy for you to get around Italy and hop from city to city. Train is one of the most popular options for traveling from one region to another. Seat61 is an excellent website offering extensive train travel tips for destinations around the world including Italy train travel.

Trenitalia operates three different high-speed rail options, Frecciabianca, Frecciargento, and Frecciarossa, and you can easily book tickets or look at schedules online at Trenitalia . You can also use ItaliaRail if booking for more than one person as the multiple booking option seems to give better rates than Trenitalia.

In Venice and when traveling to Sardinia or Sicily, you can take a water taxi or boat, which run regularly and are affordable.

You can also rent a car or vespa to travel within cities. Just keep in mind that the streets are very narrow and traffic can be intense, so if you’re not used to driving in Europe, you’re better off opting for a bus, metro, train, or boat.

Things to Do in Italy

Italy is one of the most amazing countries to visit because there are so many beautiful cities to see and sites to take in. Follow our recommendations before you travel to Italy .

What are the best sites in Italy to see?

  • Trevi Fountain
  • Leaning Tower of Pisa
  • St Mark’s Square
  • Florence Duomo
  • Amalfi Coast
  • Cinque Terre

What are the best tours in Italy?

Some travelers prefer the guidance of professionals for planning their trip. If you’re a fan of tours, check out these top tours for Italy.

Where’s the best shopping in Italy?

If you find you have left behind an essential, or need to add to add classic Italy clothes to your travel wardrobe, don’t panic. Italy is the cradle of fashion and all of the biggest brands are located in every city. Stores like H&M and Zara are highly fashionable, with a wide range of clothes.

Italian department stores such as Coin and La Rinascente can be handy when looking for quality items. You can also find designer outlet stores in major shopping destinations, too! Before shopping, see what others are wearing on the streets to capture Italian street fashion.

Compass Rose Secret Bra Wallet

Safety is a big concern whenever you travel, and in busy, touristy areas like major cities in Italy, pickpocketing can be a common occurrence. Taking a few safety precautions can help you feel less stressed during your travels.

How can I stay safe while traveling in Italy?

Be cautious about where you stash your cash so you don’t fall prey to muggings and pickpocketing. Make your clothing theft-proof and choose items with strong zippers. Jeans are handy for this reason: you can put important items, like your wallet and phone, in your front pockets, where it’s very difficult for a wandering hand to snatch it. Add items like the Secret Bra Pocket and Underwear with Pockets to your packing list.

And be mindful of purse snatchers! They either slash the bottom of your bag so the content fall out or slash the strap. Wear your purse strap across your body and the zipper towards the front. For extra security, check out the “theft-proof” bags featured in this post about crossbody purses .

These are articles with other suggested anti-theft products:

  • 6 Tools to Protect Your From Pickpockets in Europe

Remember, the safest place for your passport is locked in your accommodation. Carry a photocopy or other ID when you’re sightseeing or are out at night.

Read these tips on how to keep your passport safe when you travel!

Suggested Anti-Theft Accessories for Italy

  • Bra stash , neck pouch , or money belt with RFID protection
  • Anti-theft crossbody bag
  • Passport case
  • TSA-approved luggage lock
  • Clothing with hidden pockets (like underwear , tops , and scarves )

Key Takeaways:

  • In general day-to-day European style is more dressy than American style, but this does not mean business clothing. A nice blouse and well-tailored denim is a timeless uniform that can work in Italy just as well as any other part of Europe.
  • Ultimately, choose comfortable, classic clothing that will transcend trends so you can look back at the pictures from your trip with fond memories.
  • With shoes, always choose comfort over fashion as you’ll spend long hours on your feet – don’t forget to break them in!
  • Elevators are not prevalent in local accommodation; be prepared to lift your own luggage up many flights of stairs and steep cobblestone hills.
  • Avoid oversized, heavy luggage if you plan to use trains, buses, or budget flights as storage space is limited. You should be able to maneuver through train stations (and trains) with ease.
  • Pickpockets are prevalent in all tourist cities, be aware of your surroundings and be practical about your belongings.
  • ALWAYS check the weather before you travel.

This packing list was my EVERYTHING for my September 2021 4-week trip to Italy for which I successfully packed carryon only!! I followed these recommendations to a T and even purchased many of the recommended items (sandals, sneakers, tops, Anatomie pants) and they worked wonderfully!! Thank you so much for this list!!! We are planning on going to Italy for 10 days this coming year and I am planning on just packing a carry-on!

Have an amazing time Jenn!

Dear Alex, I could really use your expert help! I’m a 60 year old fashion forward man, well traveled in Italy and typically for a month, and only take carry-on luggage. All of your advice to others above is spot on! My upcoming 2-month trip (mid-Mar to Mid-May’22 – half by car/half trains) is creating a clothing dilemma for me as I’m traveling from cold to warm, early spring to late spring, formal to informal and multi-country. Month 1: Milan-Verona-Bologna/Emilia Romagna region; Month 2: Menton FR-Aix-Bordeaux-Bilboa, SP-Barcelona-home/USA. I like to blend in and I’ve always been able to stay in the gray/black color scheme so everything goes with everything. But other than Milan/Verona, this trip feels more like lighter colors (mid-blues/blacks/whites) are in order. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Hi Jim, thank you for reaching out!

For tips to help you pack for the mixed weather, check out this guide: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-guide-to-packing-for-different-climates/

We always recommend that for any destination, so long as you’re dressed appropriately for the weather, the culture, and your planned activities, your aim should always be to dress for your personal comfort level vs trying to blend in. It will be me, my husband, mother in law and uncle and aunt in law travelling this year in late July 18 days. Super excited but it has been many years since I traveled in Europe. Your tips are so helpful and appreciated. We are also going to be on a 7 day cruise from Rome to Venice so we must pack for both

Any tips you can provide are appreciated. I have read through about 20 different articles you have on your site. SUPER helpful

I didn’t see a lot of mention on shorts. In places like sightseeing in Pompeii is it acceptable? On shorts are the shorter denim with the appearance of wear or tears appropriate?

Our 10 step guide to Europe may be a good place to start planning your packing: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ For dressing appropriately for sightseeing, particularly when visiting churches, have a read of this: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-to-the-vatican/ For the best advice, I would highly recommend that you join our TFG facebook group and post any questions, like wearing shorts around Pompeii, there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous community of helpful female travelers that love to share their advice and travel tips and Italy is a popular destination so they will be able to help you with your questions. Deejay

We are going to Athens, Santorini start of September then the across to Italy for 3 weeks from 9th September. I have downloaded your packing list to help me get started. I closer to 60 so just trying to work out suitable clothing for both destinations. I think I will just need light clothing for Greece and most of Italy.

Hi Deejay, the best place to start planning your packing may be to have a look at our 10 step guide to Europe: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guide-europe/ Light clothes are fantastic especially if the weather will be particularly warm. The best tip is to monitor the forecast for your specific trip dates to ensure that you have the most appropriate clothing for the weather. Jessica

Just came across your post and plan to go to Italy in spring 2019. Your packing list looks great. I am going for 12 days, how many days is your list for?

Hi Jessica, here is a helpful guide that explains more about how to use our packing lists: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/how-to-use-the-travel-fashion-girl-packing-lists-and-guides/ The vacation packing lists are for indefinite travel. Generally speaking, you can pack enough for one week then do laundry and/or replenish toiletries once a week for the duration of your trip. You can also adapt it as needed. Hope that helps. Have a wonderful trip!!

Rachel

A scarf was a MUST for me. I could throw it over my shoulders when visiting churches and then toss it in my bag afterwards.

Hi Rachel, thank you for sharing your travel essential for Italy with us! 🙂

Anne

I was just in Northern Italy last week. Polo shirts are very popular with Italian men. Guys 30 and under wear shorts but those older do not in the cities. Metallic or beaded sneakers were popular with women and in store windows.

Hi Anne, thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us! Hope you had an amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

Sylwia

I am going to Italy in April for the first time and your blog helps me a lot! It looks like my shopping won’t be too much of stress as Italian style is quite casual yet smart which I like. Besides that, I won’t stand out in the crowd! Thanks a lot! 🙂

Liz

Visiting Italy in May and basically fell in love with “Dress 1” on your list for spring packing, but the link isn’t right for SheIn and I can’t find it on their website. I’m hoping that doesn’t mean they’re not selling it! I have been looking for something relaxed and comfortable like that!

Hi Liz, thank you for reaching out! Dress 1 on the spring packing list is the Missufe Women’s Runched Casual Sundress which you can find here: https://amzn.to/2HTAVoK If you were referring to another dress, please let me know? Hope this helps. Have the most amazing trip to Italy! 🙂

I am off to Italy next summer for a foodie tour and your packing list will be a great help as i will be moving from place to place everyday.

This is an awesome website that I stumbled upon!!! My daughter and I will be taking a trip to Italy from July 10-20, 2017. We will be with a group of 64 from her school in Michigan, USA, and traveling from Milan to Capri, Italy. Six out of the ten nights we will be in a different city. Is there any advice you can give us so we get the most out of our packing and travels…What to bring, what not to bring…What types of clothing we will be most comfortable in? We are thinking a lot of maxi dresses/sundresses or skirts. What types of shoes for hiking and walking (plus they have to look stylish)? We know we will need a light cover for shoulders in holy places. We will be toting our luggage each day so I’d like to pack as little as I can and get the most out of our space and wardrobe. ANY advice you can give us would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Maureen Mansoor

Hi there. My sister and I are going to be in Italy from May 26 to June 12, 2017 starting in Venice then going to Florence, Rome and lastly Sorrento to take in the Amalfi Coast. Since this is kind of on the cusp of Spring and Summer we are unsure of what to take. Also I have read that shorts are not widely worn in Italy; what about a white denim skirt which is mid thigh? Also I am wondering if it is appropriate to wear distressed jeans i.e. with factory tears in the fabric in Italy? What about white denim pants or capris at that time of the year? Is it too early? Thanks so much for your help!!

I forgot to mention that we are two women in our 60’s.

Marian Fornieles

Very interesting article and very original. I went last weekend with my husband to Rome and this article was very useful!

Lauren W.

Your articles are helping me so much to “pack smart!” We are headed to Venice, Rome, and Florence in early March. Should I try to combine the winter and spring wardrobes for predicted weather in the 40-50 degree Fahrenheit range? Do you have any new items you would add to the Spring recommendations? Thanks!!

After having been in Bologna for around 4 months now, since August (summer), I can’t say I’ve really paid attention to what people are wearing. Contrary to (probably popular) belief, I wouldn’t say Italians dress over-the-top / always-in-fashion — or if they have, I just didn’t notice it? I felt like everyone dresses pretty “normally”, i.e., I’ve never really had a problem with what I’ve worn. EXCEPT:

I do recall feeling a taaaaad out-of-place during the summer, with my sleeveless top and shorts (not even that short, mind you). I could totally tell that those who were in shorts were almost all tourists. (Then again, it was Ferragosto, which is basically a month-long holiday during August, so there weren’t many locals around to begin with.) But, at the same time, I think there were those of the younger (i.e., my) generation Italians who would wear shorts too. Although, if you want to visit any of the churches, I’m saying it now: No shorts / sleeveless. 😛

Thanks for the feedback Dominique! Very helpful! Thanks for reading!

Annie

Hi I am from the Caribbean and will be traveling to Venice for a business conference next week. What should I pack for this trip is it ok to pack business skirt suits?

Absolutely! Whatever makes you comfortable! Especially in Venice you can be as stylish or simple as you’d like! Wear what makes you feel great! Enjoy your trip!

Marlene Cavagnuolo

We are going to Naples, tour of Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast, and Capri last week of April; Sicily, tours of Siracusa and Mt Etna (not hiking) first week of May. We are staying in four star hotels and using private drivers for transportation and tours. My questions: Jacket – leather and/or lined waterproof rain jacket? Shoes for evening – booties or chunky heeled sandals? Thanks!

It can be quite rainy in that region at that time of year, so if you choose a leather jacket, I would definitely pack an umbrella! And booties may be better for the temperature! Thanks for the comment!

Amy RC

This is so helpful! I’ve been stressing over what to wear in the fall. Thanks for covering all seasons!

Jill

I’m going to central Italy in 4 weeks, and this is very helpful. Shoes are the hardest thing to find! I can’t wear flats for lack of proper support, so I think I’ve finally found some clog-type shoes that are really comfy to wear for excursions – though not very pretty. Still looking for something light that doesn’t make me look dowdy. And something I can actually afford.

Glad we could help Jill! Sounds like an awesome trip! Enjoy!

Hello! Need advise on what to pack for honeymoon to Italy in November, thanks.

There are some great options in this post Mildred! Hope you found it helpful!

Hi Alex going to Sorrento on the 30th of September , should I follow summer packing ? .

The best thing would be to check the weather forecast prior to traveling in order to determine the corresponding clothing to bring. You might also like this article: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Have a great trip!

Taylor

Hi there! I will be going to Florence, Venice, and Rome from December 23-Jan 3 and I am trying to figure out what shoes to bring. I am leaning towards booties/heels for night time and a pair of oxfords for day time exploring the cities, but I’m not sure if oxfords will be warm enough. Also I will be celebrating my 21st birthday while I am there and was wondering what people would usually where when going out for drinks at night?

Travel Fashion Girl

Hi Taylor, thanks for your question! The most important thing to remember is to find something that you feel comfortable in that makes you feel special for your birthday! I am actually going to post your question on our Facebook Page to get you more insight, so make sure to check back there so you don’t miss your questions! https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl

LOVE your posts! We’re traveling to Sorrento in mid October. I’ve planned an 8 day wardrobe around navy, white, red & gray. My shoe choices are strappy tan wedge sandals & top siders. Any other suggestions?

Is it still common in Italy (specifically, Venice or Cinque Terre) that restaurants don’t let you in without heels?

There are a few restaurants that have this rule, however many touristy places will let you in without heels. As with other places in Europe, comfortable shoes are always a must! Take a look at this article about shoes in Italy and what other readers think of heels http://bit.ly/28aU1LI

I’m leaving for Italy in a couple of days and will be there for a few weeks and would like to know if you recommend any good, yet fashionable, walking shoes. I’m not one who usually wears a canvas-type shoe and the one pair I do own no longer fits. Thank you!

Hi Faith 🙂 It depends what kind of activities you’ll be doing i.e. hiking or city walks but this guide could point you in the right direction – http://bit.ly/1rOuabK – Have a great time in Italy and good luck with the shoe hunt!

Julia

Absolutely awesome post. I only wish it came out sooner and that some items could be purchased from Canada

Hi Julia 🙂 Glad you liked the post! We’re posting daily on the site so keep checking back in to see if there is anything helpful to you 🙂

Verbana

I agree with another poster, shorts don’t belong on this list. You will never see Italians wear shorts unless they are children. Skirts, or capris.

Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you for the tips, I used this for packing for Italy in the March, it helped so much.

That’s awesome Demra! We’re happy to help 🙂

king

what about for men?what to wear? we will be there on the second week of april. thanks

Hi King, we do have some tips in this post for men in summer but unfortunately, we don’t offer too many tips for men since it’s a website for women. Here are a few more packing tips for Europe (for men): https://travelfashiongirl.com/mens-carry-on-packing-list-for-europe/

Claire

I going to an outdoor wedding in June and its in Sorrento. What should I wear.

Thank you Claire

Hi Claire! This article gives you good insight on the vibe of Sorrento: https://travelfashiongirl.com/what-to-wear-in-sorrento/ Plan to dress to impress 🙂

Kristina

Hi! I am going to Florence in mid March to visit friends studying abroad. What they have told me so far is that people in Florence dress in very neutral colors and kind of simple clothes. Is this true? I want to make sure I pack accordingly and don’t stand out as an American touristy looking person lol

Hi Kristina, sounds like an awesome study abroad experience. Europeans tend to dress in more classic styles choosing quality over quantity. The main difference is that women look great in even the most basic of outfit because they maintain a well-groomed appearance, wear tailored clothing that fits their body (not too big or too tight), and focus adding accents to a strong capsule wardrobe of versatile, neutral pieces. It’s not boring but more sophisticated – casual chic.

Take a look at these posts for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-to-live-or-work-abroad/

Have a great trip!

Cindi

I have not been to Italy in 15 years! There is no rule on having to wear dress/skirt or hair coverings when going in to churches any more ? Thx

I’ve been advised that you do still have to cover your shoulders and cover your knees when visiting a church.

jill

Hi im going to tuscany in october any help on what the weathef is likely to be and what to pack would be really helpful …im comfortable in flat pumps skinny jeans loose blouses silk scarfs and blazer will these be to warm any help appreciated x

Hi Jill, the best advice is to keep an eye on the weather on http://www.bbc.com/weather/ and for extended forecasts check out http://weather.com/

Your outfit sounds great so perhaps you can start off with that as a base and work around it: add a coat, scarf, and boots if the weather’s colder or don’t wear the blazer if it’s warm. Be prepared to layer during this time of year. These tips could also help: http://goo.gl/GjjCaY I’ll also post your question on our facebook page to get more feedback for you. https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Hope this helps!

T. French

I haven’t been to Milan since 2104, but will be there next month. Sounds like skinny jeans are still the way to go, correct?

It doesn’t seem that they’re going anywhere any time soon 😉

Bushor

Hi.. We are planning to visit Italy (milan) in the Christmas holiday.. What clothes and shoes shall i bring specially we are from warm country and coming with my little kids.

Hi Bushor, you can find out best tips on packing for Italy here http://goo.gl/IaDMDl We don’t have a specific guide for Milan so I’ll also share your question on Facebook this weekend. Keep an eye out for replies from other readers: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/ Thanks for posting!

I was in Rome 2 weeks ago , and I have searched every website looking for a paticular Italian clothing store on ether Via Frattina ViaVia Borgognona Walking down either street from the Spanish steps it is on the left hand side of the street near the top . It is a high end store only found in Italy with women clothing. Do you happen to know the name of it?

thank you for your help.

Karen Smit.

Hi Karen, have you tried using Google Maps? Here’s is what I found:

So excited to finally go overseas and Italy has been my dream. Will be in Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and even Lugano, Switzerland. Do you think it will be better to pack boots, sneakers, loafers or sandals? I’m not sure how cold my feet will be.

very informative blog!love your website..just in time!have plans to go to rome italy with my friends by first week of november. should i follow autumn packing coz im not very sure what type of clothes to wear..we also have plans in visiting venice and milan..also, need your advice on what shoes to wear!do i need to bring extra?well be there for only 8 days..thanks so much for this article!

Hi there! Check out this guide for more tips: https://travelfashiongirl.com/10-step-packing-guides/10-step-packing-guide-italy/ The best thing would be to check weather.com before your trip to determine the weather forecast and best packing list to follow. Hope you have fun!

Valentina Wurth

Great informative article on what to wear. I would absolutely caution not to wear flip flops unless you’re at the beach since you’ll immediately stand out as a tourist. As a far as revealing clothing, just make sure you always have a light jacket and I would avoid short shorts. Italians are bit more modest in their dress but they always layer and accessories. As long at you throw on a light blazer and a scarf you’ll look great.

Diana

My husband and I are planning on spending a few weeks in Italy late Sept/early October, these lists are wonderful! Also, thanks for posting a list for men, that’s very helpful. If we are doing a lot of sightseeing, would flat-soled leather boots be appropriate? I don’t want to wear tennis shoes everyday. Amazing blog, having fun getting ideas for my shopping list!

You got it right! That seems to be the best way to go in Europe especially as the weather starts turning. Have fun!

Debbie

I had the same question about going to several cities from Venice to Rome leaving the first of May. The last time I was there in May I got cold at night and was wondering if I could wear my flat black “riding” boots. They are so comfy to walk in but I don’t want to look out of place. I am also taking ballet flats for warmer days. Should I leave the boots or take them?

Hi Debbie. Great question! Ballet flats, boots (ankle, mid, or tall), and one additional pair sound like just the right type of shoes for Italy. I’ll also post your question on Facebook too. Check out this post on what shoes to wear in Italy: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-shoes-for-travel-to-italy-should-you-pack-your-heels/

Julie K

So happy I found your website! My dream vacation has been Italy for almost 30 years and I’m finally getting the chance to go next end of March/beginning of April! I’ll be hitting Rome, Venice, Florence and Naples over a 17 day period and I don’t know if I should pack for Spring with some warmth for Winter? And what kind of overcoat or coverup would you recommend? Will it rain a lot then?

I have so many questions and I’m so excited!!

Thanks again! Julie

Hi Julie, congrats on your dream vacation becoming a reality! These are some tips from the TFG readers on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TravelFashionGirl/posts/670907509599587

Stephanie

Such a blessing that I found your blog! Going to Italy (Florence, Venice and Rome) for my 1 year wedding anniversary this upcoming December. I always overpack, and am really worried about fitting everything I need for 8 days in a carry-on luggage during the winter in Italy. Can I do it? Also, hearing about all the pickpocketing, what do you recommend for holding my money/cards, and my cell phone? Just trying to make sure I’m prepared! Thank you so much!

Hi Stephanie, Thanks for your comment and congrats on your wedding anniversary! This post will give you tips on theft proofing your gear: https://travelfashiongirl.com/best-money-belts-and-anti-theft-travel-accessories/

and this post will help you feel more comfortable about packing for an 8 day trip: https://travelfashiongirl.com/packing-list-for-8-day-or-8-month-trip/

I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get your more reader feedback 🙂

Thanks so much, Alex! I really, really appreciate it. I need all the help I can get! haha 🙂 I’ll definitely be checking back on your blog for any additional comments or help for any of my travels!

Hope you’re enjoying your current travels!

There’s tons of tips already! Check them out 🙂

Mimi

Love your website, follow you on instagram and facebook! 🙂 In two weeks I’m leaving for a 20 day trip that starts in Venice,Florence,Rome, Sicily (Palermo) and ends with four days in Paris. I tend to over pack always! (even for weekend trips!) Not sure if I should include more summer than Fall clothes? Thank you 🙂

Thank you Mimi for your compliments and following TFG 🙂 I’d say pack for Fall with a variety of clothing that you can layer. Always check the weather reports to your destinations first so you can plan as accurately as possible. I’ll also post your question on Facebook to get more feedback for you. Thanks for reading!

Cindy

Hi Alex, I didn’t see Mimi’s question on Facebook. Also, is it ok to wear a white capri in October in Italy? Thanks

Rachelle

Super helpful! I am leaving for Italy this week for a ten day trip (Rome, Venice, Florence, Sienna, Amalfi Coast) and I think I’ll lean more toward the summer wardrobe but will add a few fall pieces just incase! I wasn’t planning to pack a pair of heels (and I am a huge heel girl)…so now I am rethinking my no heel decision. Perhaps wedges can suffice?

Hi Rachelle, I’ll post your question on FB to see what everyone thinks 🙂 Thanks!

ricki

Thank you for “What to Wear in Italy” it helped so much 😉 My suit case is packed and ready for Rome next week! I love this Travel Blog!!!!!!

Thanks Ricki! Hope you have a great trip 🙂

Christina

Love that you put this together. Doing a 17 day tour of Italy starting mid-September – should I follow more of the summer or autumn list?

Maybe a bit of both since the weather will vary based on your location.

Thank you so much fo putting these lists together – super helpful in determining what’s acceptable by geography. Traveling to Italy mid-September for just over two weeks – should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn if our itinerary includes Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and Como?

You should plan for both since the weather will vary based on your location – just plan to layer 🙂

Thank you so much for putting these together. I always struggle with what to pack based on culture and geography. Headed to Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice, Como and Milan) on the 10th of September – any packing suggestions? Should I be leaning more towards summer or autumn at that point?

Michelle

Incredibly stylish! Will there also be a Scotland series?

Yes, it’s a little delayed but it’s coming 🙂

Penny Sadler

Great job! Thank you for confirming too, in the south, don’t show too much skin. I often see tourists in short shorts, tank tops, too much skin. I don’t even pack shorts for the south. Can’t wait to return to Italy this fall!

Happy that Jacopo was able to give us info straight from the source 🙂

Clare

This could not have come at a better time for me! I’m packing for Italy as I write this! Might throw in an extra pair of heels…

Happy the timing was right 🙂

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

summer tour dresscode

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Will it be easy to find my way in the Moscow Metro? It is a question many visitors ask themselves before hitting the streets of the Russian capital. As metro is the main means of transport in Moscow – fast, reliable and safe – having some skills in using it will help make your visit more successful and smooth. On top of this, it is the most beautiful metro in the world !

. There are over 220 stations and 15 lines in the Moscow Metro. It is open from 6 am to 1 am. Trains come very frequently: during the rush hour you won't wait for more than 90 seconds! Distances between stations are quite long – 1,5 to 2 or even 3 kilometers. Metro runs inside the city borders only. To get to the airport you will need to take an onground train - Aeroexpress.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
