Accommodation.

  • Pioneer Camp near Lusaka, Zambia. Nice chalet with well kept grounds. A variety of fruit trees and flowers.
  • Kafue NP at confluence of Kafue and Lufupa rivers. Much of the camp was still under construction but it had showers and flush toilets and a nice reception area that was nearly finished. The crew was still learning to operate the camp and one evening built too much fire under the donkey ( device used to heat water ) and there was steam blowing everywhere. When I flushed the toilet boiling water came out. Thank goodness I wasn’t still seated. We pitched our tents under a tree with little fruits and by day the birds would eat and then their droppings would land on our tent and at night bats and bush-babies would do the same. We learned a good lesson about picking our shade more carefully. We saw many birds right in camp as well as warthogs and one night a hyena. We were warned not to leave our shoes outside the tent because the hyenas would carry them off.
  • Breezers Camp on the Zambezi River. Beautiful camp with lots of grass and trees which is right on the river bank and the scenery was stunning. Camp has a three-legged dog that they keep to impress tourists to stay away from the crocs. Showers and toilet facilities were adequate.
  • Islands in the Zambezi River. It was interesting to set up camp on an island and then listen to the hippo grazing around you in the dark. One morning we awoke to find an elephant had joined us during the night but fortunately the island was big enough for all. This was the most primitive camping we did with no facilities at all. We had local guides for this part of the trip and Chauntel stayed at Breezers Camp. The tents were smaller than the ones Jenman uses but they were OK and we took our Jenman sleeping bags with us. The gas stove quit working and our guides had to cook over an open campfire. They did an excellent job and then entertained us with stories while the campfire burned down to coals and the stars came out. I was surprised at the total lack of biting bugs. Even though it was winter I had expected some mosquitoes or gnats but there were none.
  • Zambezi Waterfront in Livingstone. We stayed here two nights in the middle of our safari and one night at the end. The rooms were not great but the beds were a welcome change from ground mats and sleeping bags. This is the only place where we were bothered by mosquitoes and with the netting they were not really a problem. Both times we stayed here my daughter and I got bites at night. My wife used her bag liner and didn’t get any so I assume there was some sort of bug in the beds. These were the only bites I got the whole safari.
  • Toro Camp in Botswana and near Chobe NP. The camp was sandy and not very pleasant. Toilet facilities were average and there were quite a few campers in a relatively small area.
  • Planet Baobab was a disappointment in most ways. The camp was hot and dusty with little shade and no grass. There was no wildlife, not much in the way of scenery. We did take a hike with a local guide who showed us a lot of plants and how they were used but other than that it was not too great. If I had the trip to do over I would skip the long loop we made to get there and spend the time in Chobe.
  • Camp Mankwe was my favourite area. It is a brand new camp and we were the first people to stay in it ( there is an old camp with the same name ). We had permanent tents on concrete slabs and the area was very scenic. Our tents looked out over a watering hole and we saw birds and antelope often. The staff was still working out the bugs in the water system and the first night our shower kept going cold but they fixed it and the second night was much better. And speaking of working out bugs, the tents had been up for a while but no one had stayed in them, so a variety of bugs had set up housekeeping and I had to collect them in an empty juice bottle and transport them to a new home before my wife and daughter felt comfortable. The game drives we had out of Mankwe were the best of the safari. One day was spent in Moremi Reserve which had a great variety of birds and animals. The staff was wonderful and did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable.
  • Audi Camp ( just outside Maun ) is a place to stay on your way to somewhere else. There is nothing there to see or do but we did stay in their luxury tents and it was nice to catch up on journals and naps.

Botswana Wildlife Breakaway

First time in Southern Africa for us and we had an incredible experience that we will never forget. There IS a LOT of driving, But, like another reviewer on here said, looking back on it, that was part of the fun. We saw things we would never have seen and experienced the real roads of Botswana, Zimbabwe and Namibia. The 11 seater bus/truck we all travelled between areas in was very comfortable and handled some of the rough roads well. We especially want to mention our guide, Jabo, and driver Bernard, . Jabu is knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, he has a huge smile and an infectious laugh that you couldn't go past. He and Bernard made an awesome team. The tour was well organised and they took excellent care of everyone. Several of the meals were prepared by them and they took pride in what they served (especially the dinner at Guma, it was one of the best meals on the trip!). The Bedouin camp and the accommodation was a highlight for us along with the sunset river cruise on the Chobe River. At the Bedouin camp we had an incredible few encounters with Elephant walking right past our Tent, within 2 metres of us! We saw the 'big five' many times and we saw thousands of elephant, Hippo, kudu, impala, zebras, and giraffe and many many more from the comfort of our smaller Game Drive vehicles (and sometimes hotel/tent) which were very comfy. We would highly recommend Jenman Safaris and would love to do another.

Hi mattbriar d Thank you for your review! We are so pleased to know that you had a wonderful holiday. We hope that you and your family made many lasting memories that you will cherish for years to come. We appreciate you recognizing the efforts of Jabu and Bernard. Our guides and drivers play a pivotal role in the success of our tours and thus, we are so happy to hear that they were so accommodating and that they made your trip with Jenman so enjoyable. We will most definitely pass on your compliments. It is great to know that the accommodation was to your liking and that you saw so much game! Thank you once again for traveling with Jenman African Safaris. We hope you will come back soon to explore more of this beautiful continent with us. Please feel free to stay in touch with us through our Facebook and Twitter pages. Kind regards, Jenman Management Team

Feedback on Southern Experience tour 6 August 2016 – 27 August 2016 Travelled with Jenman Safari on the Southern Experience tour. We were hugely disappointed with the tour. Jenman required luggage to be of soft duffel type and weight of less than 15kg, but did not enforce it. In fact their own crew (driver) had a hardcase (which he stored on the roof), and many passengers had duffel bags weighing more than 15kg. I know because I helped load them. The Tour Bus 1. The 4x4 bus is good for safari drive but not long distance travelling, because seats were not comfortable and did not have headrests. Seats had this cushion padding that keep sliding off the seat. (This tour started from Victoria Falls and finished in Cape Town) 2. The locker boxes below the seats were of no use because the metal plate door could not be locked and kept falling out, thus becoming a safety hazard because you could trip or cut yourself, also they are too small to put anything in it. Because these boxes were below the seat, means that we could not stretch our legs (so you are always seated with your legs at a 90 degrees angle) and we are not able to put our backpack and the 5litre water bottle (that the guide asked us to buy for drinking) below the seat. What makes it worse is everybody put their 5 litre bottles near the door and those sitting in front have to constantly stop the bottles from moving all over the place because of the bumpy roads. With no overhead compartment to store our backpacks, meant that we have to put our backpacks below our legs where there is already limited legroom because of the boxes. This seating arrangement was worse than sitting in an economy seat in the airplane. Imagine doing this for 21 days and on some days travelling for more than 400km on unsealed and bumpy roads. 3. The microphone in the bus did not work. Most of us could not hear the guide over the rattling of the bus, nor did the guide make the extra effort to face the passengers in the bus whilst talking to ensure that everyone heard him. 4. The only aircon vents in the bus were at the back and at the front. This meant that most of the time we were not able to feel the aircon when it was turned on. It also did not help when the driver/guide have their windows down when the aircon was turned on. During the drives when the roads were bumpy and dusty, don’t understand why the crew did not turn the aircon on and wind up their windows (which they did do occasionally but not often enough) 5. Bus was not cleaned every day. The windows were dirty, seatbelts were dirty and dusty. The top of fridge that was in the bus had a layer of dust, and was never cleaned from day one. You can never use the seat pockets because they were never cleaned at all, you find sweet wrappers, used tissue papers and rubbish in them. 6. There were also safety issues: a) during our tour, nuts and bolts came undone on the pop up roof. The passengers had to screw it tight everytime we use it b) on one occasion, the fridge in the bus had sparks coming from the wires which could have caused a fire c) gas leaked into the cabin because of the gas bottles we were carrying (not properly tightened) d) stairs leading into cabin broke off on one occasion, luckily no one was injured e) Once while on a safari drive, the pop-up roof slammed shut when we hit some branches, luckily nobody had their heads out at that time The Tour Guide There is no denying that the guide is very friendly, and he knows a lot of the other crew and staff at all the stops we made. But as a guide with over 19 years’ experience, he seemed to have lost his passion. He was acting more like he was on his last assignment and could not be bothered, and just going through the motions. 1. Being on an organised tour, we expect the guide to provide information on the countries and places that we visit or pass along the way. This was not the case. On the occasions that he points out a place to us while driving by, he will just say this is xxxxx, without giving further information. Other than the places which provided local guides (which were excellent), we expected our guide to provide us with the commentary and knowledge, but this was sadly lacking. Compared to other tours that we have taken in the past, we ended up not knowing any more about the countries and places we visited than before we left. 2. Everyday before we start out, he does not give a detailed schedule for the day eg. When we will stop for a toilet/supermarket stop, what is the estimated time we will stop for lunch, planned activities for the day, as well as estimated time we will reach our lodge/destination. a) On the day that we were finally leaving Botswana and going to Namibia, most of us spent our last pula at the morning supermarket stop, thinking that would be the last chance to clear our pula before going to Namibia. However at the next stop, the guide told us to spend all our pula here. This information came too late as we have already spent all our pula at the previous stop, and passengers who needed more snacks/water ended up changing more pula in order to make their purchases b) During our lunch stop at Cape Cross, the luggage have to be taken out again as most of the passengers have packed their jackets in the luggage. He should have told us that we may need a jacket with us at Cape Cross c) It is totally frustrating having to deal with the guide, even when you ask him directly, he does not give you a clear answer! 3. He is the only safari guide that we have come across that does not use a pair of binoculars for wildlife spotting. During safari drives, when he spots an animal, he just shouts “xxxx on the left/right” – at least he could have said “xxxx on the left at 10 o’clock for example, so that we know exactly where on the left to look! 4. There is no clear direction from him, eg. when you ask him how long we have at the location/stop, he says “depends on what you want to do”. When we stopped at the Sesriem Canyon, he just tells us “that is the path to walk down to the bottom of the canyon”. He did not tell us anything about the Canyon, nor where to walk when we reach the bottom of the canyon, nor how much time we are supposed to spend at the Canyon. In fact, after walking more than 40minutes in the wrong direction, we turned back. We asked a guide who was with 2 of his clients, and he told us more information about the Canyon than our own guide ever did! 5. The guide has very poor forward planning. a) Ask him what he is preparing for lunch when he is already at the supermarket shopping for food, he says he does not know. b) He wanted to buy meat pies for lunch at the Solitaire bakery, but by the time we reached there, the meat pies have been sold out. I heard the lady at the counter telling him he should have phoned ahead to order. We ended up just having plain salad, bread and apple pie for lunch! c) Lunch is always late, at around 2pm. On 2 occasions, we had lunch at around 3pm. We consider ourselves lucky if we had lunch before 2pm. As we normally have breakfast early, you can see why most of us are already starving by the time lunch is ready. Dinner was always at 7pm, even when lunch was very late. It is common sense to try to space out the meal times evenly, but this clearly shows the guide could not be bothered to do so. d) 2 days before we were due at Swakopmund, he told us he will try to book The Tug Restaurant (a well known and popular restaurant in Swakopmund) for our group dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant was already fully booked when he called them, which left many of my fellow travellers disappointed. We had read about this restaurant, and made a booking 2 months before we left for the tour. 6. Lunch preparation and eating on the road was very unhygienic as it was very dusty. The quality of the food was pathetic. a) Sanitizing gel was not provided b) The crew do not use gloves or sanitize their hands when preparing food c) Passengers double dipping and also not washing or sanitizing their hands when eating shared food d) Worst still is the fact that at every lunch stop, passengers going to the bush toilet, and then not sanitizing their hands after that e) Only had two hot meals for lunches prepared by the guide, the rest were all cold meals like salad and bread. I. One of the hot meals we had was a take-away from the supermarket (comprising of rice, lamb & chicken stew) which the crew later reheated. Could not understand why the guide did not buy more take-away hot food from the supermarket on days when we were pressed for time. It would have been faster, more hygienic and tastier. (At Swamp Stop, two groups that arrived 30 mins after us had their packed lunch while their stuff was being loaded onto the boat. By the time they finished their lunch they were on their way, while we have only started to eat our lunch as we had to wait for the crew to prepare our lunch). II. During each lunch stop, we had to wait at least ½ hour or more for the crew to prepare the salads. He should have prepared the salads in the morning at the lodge (under more sanitary conditions), and then kept them in the refrigerator in the vehicle III. If I had known what the guided was intending to prepare for lunch each day, I would have bought my own lunch at the supermarket if I did not like what he was making. But as he could not tell me what he was planning for lunch, most times we ended up either spending unnecessarily to buy hot food from the supermarket, or have no choice but to eat what the guide prepared. IV. Another thing that I do not understand is why people who are on a gluten free diet had a choice in what they eat. Once during lunch they had chicken drumsticks with fries but the rest of us had no choice but sandwich with fries. Another time during dinner they had three different kinds of meat, while we just had the standard beef stew. Why could not the rest of us have a choice in the meal? f) During one BBQ dinner, my chicken drumstick was not fully cooked and it had blood still showing on the meat Pepere Island Before going on the tour, we were very much looking forward to the Okavango Delta and expected it to be the highlight of the tour. However our experience with Pepere Island were hugely disappointing. 1) Firstly, we were not informed prior to the tour that we would not have access to our luggage, and that we would need to pack a small overnight bag for Pepere Island. The original Jenman itinerary had Guma Lagoon camp listed as the possible accommodation choice. Even when the final itinerary was issued, there was no mention of packing an overnight bag for Pepere Island. We have seen itineraries from other companies which specifically mention having to pack an overnight bag for the accommodation at Okavango Delta, which we deliberately avoided. Had we known this from the start, we would not have selected this Jenman tour. 2) The quality of accommodation provided at Pepere Island would be acceptable if we were on a camping style tour, eg. Southern Explorer. But for the Southern Experience tour which Jenman promised “typical mid-range to slightly up-market African lodge accommodation” (quoted from Jenman’s brochure), this is highly unacceptable! a) The permanent tented camp was poorly constructed – the ‘walls’ of the toilet and shower area were constructed from tree branches, and there were huge gaps between some of the branches. This meant that whoever is using the toilet/shower can be easily seen by anyone outside the tent, especially at night. b) Some of the solar lights they provided for each tent were not working, and they had no spares available. c) The lodge was supposed to provide free drinking water, but on the last day, they had run out of the 5 litre water bottles (that they used to provide us with free drinking water), and had to supply us with 500ml water bottles which they charge us for! d) There was no facility to charge our batteries etc – they did have electric power in the kitchen cum dining area where we had our meals, but did not have enough electricity to allow their clients to do charging. The kitchen cum dining area was cramped and uncomfortable, and is more like a camp kitchen. We have experienced permanent tented camps in Tanzania, where even though they do not have charging facilities within the tent, provide charging facilities in the large and comfortable dining area. The lodge in Pepere Island was a far cry from other permanent tented camps we have experienced so far. 3) The 3 ½ boat ride from Swamp Stop to and from Pepere Island was too long, with little wildlife viewing along the way. In fact, we saw minimal wildlife on Pepere Island. This was certainly not the kind of experience we were expecting in the Okavango Delta. After our trip, we met other travellers who also went to the Okavango Delta. The amount of wildlife and birdlife they experienced certainly made us feel shortchanged! 4) There were optional activities listed in the original itinerary with Guma Lagoon camp, which we were looking forward to. However there were no such activities offered at Pepere Island. 5) I know that this is the first time Jenman has used the Pepere Island lodge. I feel that Jenman should send their own staff to vet and check out the lodge (at Jenman’s expense!) before sending clients, rather than use our tour group as a guinea pig to check out the Pepere Island lodge. The experience at Pepere Island certainly left a sour taste in the mouth. If we had encountered lots of wildlife and birdlife at Pepere Island, we may be prepared to overlook the other shortcomings at Pepere Island. In fact the whole Pepere Island trip was a total waste of time. Jenman should refund us for entire the sub-standard Okavango Delta experience at Pepere Island!! We had sent this feedback to Jenman, who then told us that they will respond to our feedback within the next 10 working days. After waiting a month with no feedback, my travel agent followed up with Jenman, who then promised a response by the end of the following week. The week has now passed without a word from Jenman.

Hi pioneertraveller Thank you for sharing your review with us. We are deeply saddened regarding your comments and we sincerely apologise that your chosen safari did not meet your expectations. We do pride ourselves on the expertise of our guides and the quality of our safari vehicles and thus, we are very sorry about the problems listed in your review. Thank you for being so detailed orientated and pointing out so very clearly what went wrong with your tour. We will be looking into all aspects of your complaint with a matter of urgency and get back to you. We appreciate you alerting us to poor conditions at Pepere Island. We are going to look into this matter, too. We will in touch directly with you and your agent with a more detailed response. Once again, please accept our most humble apologies. Kind regards, Jenman Management Team

Jenman organised a very good 19 day tour with a driver based on places we wanted to visit and did their very best to meet all our wishes. The tour price was very reasonable, not much more than a standard group tour. We were warned that the driver might not speak much English or act like a guide. However, our driver Hery was brilliant. He was a mine of information and looked after us in every possible way. His English was excellent, even though it was his third language. He took care of our security, checked our rooms, pointed out birds and wildlife, and gave a very full picture of all aspects of life and the various peoples and tribes we came across. He was also very willing to help us with extra excursions and requests. The accommodation was mostly good. However, in some remote places, it was very simple, but there was no other choice. The days were very long and the roads very rough. Still, this was all part of the experience and the trip we had requested, so very worthwhile. We’d definitely use Jenman again. Our trip was organised through their South Africa office.

Hi Caroline Thank you so much for taking the time to share your review of your recent holiday. We are so pleased to know that you had a wonderful holiday in Madagascar. We hope you made many life-lasting memories you will cherish for years to come. We are so pleased to know that Henry took such good care of you! A great guide, especially in a remote country such as Madagascar, is a crucial part of making sure clients have a great holiday. Many tourists do not understand that Madagascar is still in its infancy with regards tourism, and thus it is always refreshing when guests understand that the rough roads, simple accommodation and often long hours of driving are part of this countries charm. We hope you will travel with us again in the near future so that we may show you even more of what Africa and its surrounds have to offer. Please feel free to stay in contact via our social media pages. Kind regards, Jenman Management Team

We recently returned from the Botswana Wildlife Breakaway safari and had an amazing experience that we will never forget. Yes, there is a lot of driving on this safari, especially the 3 hour drive to the Khwai Bedouin camp. We thought we would never arrive! But looking back on it, that was part of the fun. We joked with our travel mates, saw things we would never have seen had we flown, and experienced the real roads of Botswana. We especially want to mention our guide, Manuel Joao, and our driver, Mbusi. We've seen many tour guides during our travels, but none as good as Manuel. He is knowledgeable on a wide range of subjects, but more importantly was his willingness to always handle our group's requests with a smile and a Hakuna Matata. He is one of the best and he and Mbusi made a great team. We especially loved the staff and their joyful singing at the Bedouin camp and the accommodations and staff at Elephant Eye. The sunset river cruise on the Chobe was superb. The not-so-great would be the A'Zambezi Lodge. The reception staff are great; the bar and restaurant area seemed to be having some major issues. On our game drives, we saw endless elephants, kudu, impala, zebras, and giraffe. Especially memorable was a mama lion with her cub in her mouth as she walked past our vehicle, a leopard that our local guide, Chief, was bound and determined to find and did, and watching three lions tracking a warthog, who escaped. So many amazing, amazing memories. We would highly recommend Jenman Safaris and would love to do another.

Throughly enjoyed our 9 day safari. In Chobe National Park and surrounding area we saw at least 20 different species of animal included all the big 5 except a Rhino. Our guide Kgaga was fantastic. Great driver, very patient, happy nature and obliging could not have asked for more. If I go again will definitely request Kgaga again. Accommodation at the Khwai Bedouin Camp and Sable Sands in particular was better than expected. All the staff and food was terrific at each place we stayed. Only negative was the drive to the Makgadikai Salt Pans. It was 4 hrs return of hot and dusty driving over rough sandy roads. We hardly saw an animal along the way and when we arrived was nothing but a dried up salt lake.

Hi Michelle Thank you for taking the time to share the experience of your recent holiday with us. It sounds like you had a really wonderful experience. We have just returned from a wonderful Northern Experience safari with Jenman. This tour took ten of us over 22 days from Cape Town, through to the beautiful Orange River on the border and into Namibia's spectacular Fish River Canyon. We climbed dunes in Sossuvlei, saw 5000 year old rock paintings and numerous animals and birds in the amazing National Parks of Etosha and Mahangu in Namibia and The Okavango Delta and Chobe in Botswana. The trip finished in Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. We were fortunate to have Nkossie as our driver over the many kilometres on dirt roads. The bus was comfortable and roomy (10 of us in an 18 seater, everyone had a window seat). It was great for the game drives too. Alfred was a truely fantastic guide. He was so much fun, organised and knowledgable. He and Nkossie gave great insight into life in Southern Africa, and prepared varied and nutritious meals. The accommodations were great, clean and comfortable, all with ensuite bathrooms. A mixture of cabins, lodges and permanent tents, they were all perfect. Thanks so much for a great trip. Jules and Tawfik

Should there be no restaurant facilities, your guide will prepare the meal. Lunches are usually lunch packs or prepared by your guide during a lunch stop.

If you booked a Lodge Safari Package, all meals will be prepared in the Lodges’ restaurant.

Spending Money on Safari

Clients are advised to bring enough money to cover the purchase of curios and entertainment (alcoholic drinks, mineral water etc). US Dollars, Pound Sterling and South African Rand (ZAR) are the most practical and convenient currencies. There are automatic teller machines (ATMs) available in Botswana, Namibia and South Africa to draw money.

Tipping on Safari

Tipping can sometimes be confusing, but it doesn’t need to be! While tipping is always at guests’ own discretion, it is a standard procedure in Africa when it comes to service providers. We’ve provided some guidelines on what is the appropriate amount to tip to the various people who play an important role in our guests’ safari.

  • Transfer drivers USD 2 – 5
  • Lodge guides USD 10 – 20
  • Trackers USD 5 – 10
  • Driver and trackers USD 15 – 20

What to pack for a safari

Shorts, swimming costume, comfortable walking shoes, light trousers/jeans, sarong, sandals, T-shirts, sun hat, long-sleeved shirts, windbreaker and tracksuit. Warm clothes in the winter months (May-August).

Safari Vehicles

Jenman African Safaris Pty uses Mercedes all-terrain vehicles with air-conditioning, comfortable seating, large windows for game viewing and a music system. All luggage is carried in the off-road trailer to ensure maximum comfort in the vehicle.
