Frequently asked questions about Western Europe cruises
Bruges, Belgium, is a medieval city full of character. Known as 'Venice of the North', it features narrow canals, cobblestone streets and stunning architecture. The Isle of Skye in Scotland is also a beautiful spot, with many seafood restaurants and gorgeous waterfront views. The last of our top recommendations is the south of France, where vast vineyards and sunny coastlines beckon. All of these, and more, can be visited on a Cunard cruise.
The weather in Western Europe ranges quite a lot, but the chances of warm, dry days are best from May to September. Peak season lasts from June until August, so if you're looking for fewer crowds avoid these months.
The weather can vary depending on where in Western Europe you visit as, thanks to the Gulf Stream, the area is warmer and wetter than it should be for its latitude. Wherever you travel, a light raincoat and good walking shoes are wise choices, and layers for cooler evenings on deck. Suncream, glasses and sunhats should be packed for cruises in May-August.
Spain, Portugal, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland are all visited on Cunard Western Europe cruises. Our itinerary selection changes, so be sure to check our range of cruises regularly. For more details on our ports of call, visit our Western Europe ports page .
Copenhagen in Denmark, Dublin in Ireland and Lisbon in Portugal are just some of the highlights of a Cunard Western Europe cruise. For a full list of ports in this region visit our Western Europe ports page .

Many of the best European cruises dock in Denmark, and it's no wonder why. From colorful Nyhavn harbor in Copenhagen to storied castles like Amalienborg and Frederiksborg, Denmark more than makes up for the fact that its more famous neighbors often eclipse it.
LAND OF FIRE AND ICE
It's easy to be intrigued by Iceland , whether you walk through Reykjavik's riveting Hallgrimskirkja church, or watch the northern lights dance over Kirkjufellsfoss waterfalls. Plus, there are few better ways to cap off cruises to Europe than a dip in the aptly-named Blue Lagoon.
PRICELESS PANORAMAS, FABULOUS FJORDs
Norway is a country in beautiful balance. Had enough of the orderliness of Oslo? Head west to beautiful Bergen, where finger-shaped fjords jut into and out of thousands of miles of coastline. Or contrast a fresh fish dinner at sea level with the view from towering Trolltunga cliff.
Europe is beautiful in every season, but the peak of comfortable weather (especially in the north) is between May and September.
You should always be prepared for rain and colder weather when you travel to Europe, especially in the North. Dress in light layers for your vacation.
Europeans speak more English the farther north you go. Your phone's translation app (or, at minimum, learning how to say "Hello" and "Thank You" in local languages) will aid you along the Mediterranean.
RELATED PORTS
Learn more about Baltic ports like Klaipeda, Lithuania and Tallinn, Estonia, or read up on Bergen, the gateway to Norway's stunning fjords. The Mediterranean provides many options but start by exploring Malaga on Spain's Costa del Sol or the exciting Monte Carlo, Monaco. The most popular ports in the British Isles are Edinburgh in Scotland and the cities of Belfast and Dublin in Ireland. No matter what you like, you will find your favourite European cruise.

Find European Cruises
Mediterranean
Where cuisine and culture converge
Once home to ancient civilizations and famous philosophers, the Mediterranean continues to define tradition. Departing from Rome, Athens or Barcelona, sail into Marseille and bask in the beauty of Provence’s lavender fields. Explore Pompeii’s ruins while visiting Naples. Or taste cuisine as rich as the culture with fresh vegetables in Santorini and hand-thrown pizzas in Naples.
British Isles
Legendary tunes and storybook tales
On a European cruise to the British Isles, walk in the footsteps of royalty, like the kings, queens and musical empires before you. Travel along the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle, where bagpipes greet you. See the world’s oldest book, The Book of Kells, at Trinity College Library. Or walk along Abbey Road and visit the old stomping grounds of one of the world’s most famous boybands. With Princess, fortresses and musical memoirs await.
Scandinavia & Baltic
Viking history as deep as the fjords
Legendary tales come alive on a European cruise to Scandinavia. Explore Baltic heritage with an overnight visit to Stockholm, where you can visit the Royal Palace or sail the sparkling waterways of its 14 islands while learning about Sweden along the way. Walk Tallinn’s cobbled streets and admire the preserved medieval architecture from its 13th-century origins.
Norway & Iceland
Natural splendors abound
Natural attractions abound in Norway and Iceland, your gateway to dazzling fjords, cascading waterfalls and black-sand beaches. Navigate through Geiranger’s winding waterways to Seven Sisters Waterfall where currents rush 800 feet down the rugged cliffside. Or take a dip in the rejuvenating waters of the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik. Admire Mother Nature’s masterpieces on some of our best European cruises.
Transatlantic
The best of land and sea
Indulge in a classic sailing experience and revel in life at sea as you travel across the Atlantic. While on board, luxuriate in the best that your ship has to offer — like the Princess Luxury Bed and cuisine made from scratch. Then explore ports from Iceland to Greece and cities between. Get to know the unique personalities of your ship and the destinations visited, only on a Transatlantic European cruise with Princess.
Cruisetours
More time to explore
European cruisetours combine our traditional cruises with four to eight nights on land exploring world-famous regions. As a part of your trip, enjoy expert guides, hotel stays and daily meals. Experience seamless transportation from land to ship before setting sail to the dream destinations on your itinerary. See Europe in a way that only Princess can show you.
European Cruise Departure Ports
- London (Southampton)
Rooted in Greek mythology, Athens is alive with stories from civilizations of the past. On a cruise to Europe departing from Athens, arrive early to tour the remains of ancient lores — like the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Acropolis — dine at the city’s lively tavernas and admire iconic sculptures bathed in natural light within the Acropolis Museum.
Until it was popularized by the 1992 Olympics, Barcelona was a hidden gem amidst Europe’s diverse landscapes. Now it’s widely recognized for its architectural masterpieces and spirited customs. On European cruises from Barcelona, leave enough time before you depart to visit Park Güell — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and feel inspired by the colors and unique artistry that lies in the park and throughout the entire city.
Copenhagen boasts equal parts charm and culture. Before you set sail on your European cruise, indulge in thrills at Tivoli Gardens, and ride a bike along Nyhavn’s waterways, passing multi-colored homes on the way. Tour ancient fortresses, like Kronborg Castle, which inspired Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” Or make a stop to see Copenhagen’s most famous symbol, The Little Mermaid.
From double-decker buses and telephone booths to medieval castles and monuments, experience the best of the city and countryside on a European cruise from Southampton. Ride on the London Eye, and watch the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace. Then head west and walk the hallways of Windsor Castle, or travel even further to learn about the mystery of Stonehenge.
Italy’s capital city is something of a dream. Grand chapels and stone angels line the roads, whispering secrets of Rome’s past. On a cruise to Europe from Rome, arrive early to toss a coin into Trevi Fountain. Legend has it, you’ll be guaranteed return to The Eternal City. Then walk in the footsteps of Emperors at the Colosseum, and receive a blessing from the Pope at St. Peter’s Square.
Why Cruise in Europe
With Princess, travel effortlessly through Mediterranean beaches, British Isles, Russian palaces and Norwegian fjords. On a European cruise, meet locals who call these destinations home, see world-famous landmarks and relive stories of the past.
Cruising vs Land Vacations
The value of vacation
Revel in first-class experiences without the first-class price tag. On a European cruise, unpack once and save on transportation and baggage fees as well as dining and entertainment costs. Independent land travel through Europe adds up fast — between accommodations, restaurants, train travel, taxis and more. But with Princess, you can spend more time exploring Europe and less time checking into your next hotel.
Experience Different Seasons of Europe
Sail into the season
See the many faces of the world with seasonal European cruise sailings from Princess. In the spring, shop France’s colorful outdoor markets for hand-crafted souvenirs. Frolic through Norway’s landscapes when they fully bloom in summer. Or visit Italy in the fall to taste the first wines of the season.
Sail Aboard Our Newest Ships
Your best-in-class travel companion
Built in Italy, our newest ships first set sail in international waters for their inaugural season. On a European cruise, you can be one of the first to travel aboard these vessels, adding a whole new level of excitement and opportunity to your trip. Plus these are the first ships designed with Princess® MedallionClass®, making them the best European cruises at sea.
See Famous Landmarks
Where history books come alive
Between the castles, towers and ruins, Europe is teeming with ancient architecture. On a European cruise, sail into Le Havre and choose to visit the beaches of Normandy or ascend the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Walk through the Colosseum in Rome, and stop by Livorno to see the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Or explore hidden gems — like Belfast’s Giant’s Causeway.
A Vacation for Every Generation
Adventures for all
In Europe, there are activities for all. With exciting tours through age-old cities, kids can see textbooks come to life and return with their own stories to tell. Parents can relish in romance and relaxation amidst fairytale landscapes, and grandparents can relive stories of memories past with their loved ones. Whether on board or ashore, find activities created with every type of guest in mind on a cruise to Europe.
Enjoy the Convenience of Cruising
Travel reimagined
See multiple international cities without the hassle of transportation or additional planning. Cruise from one destination to the next with world-class entertainment, fresh food and relaxing accommodations at your fingertips. When you return to the ship, continue your exploration with unique activities and global cuisine, or enjoy the familiar comforts of home with your favorite foods — all on our best European cruise ships.
European cruise excursions
From thrilling kayak voyages in Flåm to relaxing beach days in Mykonos, find shore excursions that match every guest’s preference with Princess. In Rome, taste local delicacies like wood-fired pizza, fine wines and homemade gelato. Walk past medieval buildings in Bergen, stopping by the Schøtstuene Museum on your way back. Or hike Mt. Fløien and revel in panoramic views of Norway’s woodlands, fjords and cityscapes.
Local connections
Don’t just cruise to Europe, experience it alongside those lucky enough to call it home. Our Local Connections program introduces you to each region with award-winning shore excursions. Enjoy a food and wine pairing in the home of a local Tuscan farmer. Capture snapshots of Glasgow’s breathtaking scenery with the help of a Scottish photographer. Or set out on a guided beer walk through Copenhagen.
More ashore
Dive even deeper into the flourishing cultures abroad with More Ashore late-night departures and overnight stays on select European cruise itineraries. Visit one of Dublin’s pubs and enjoy a night of Irish song, dance and Guinness. Go glamping in Alta and spend the night under the evening sky for a chance to see the Northern Lights. Or dance into the evening at a party in Mykonos — an island famous for its nightlife.
European Cruise Onboard Experience
Experience Europe right on board. Our onboard activities bring the diverse cultures of the region directly to you. Sing, dance, feast and celebrate in a way that only Europe — and Princess — knows how.
Accommodations
Your home away from home
Your stateroom is where you rest and recharge between adventures. That’s why every room is equipped with the expertly designed Princess Luxury Bed, 100% Jacquard-woven cotton linens and our SLEEP program created by a board-certified sleep expert. From interior cabins to full suites, unwind in any of our staterooms, and enjoy peace of mind with the option of connected rooms for families of four or more traveling together.
A sensory tour of Europe
From the spice of Moroccan tagine to the sweetness of Greek Baklava, Europe’s flavor profile is incredibly diverse. On board your European cruise, enjoy English favorites — like bangers and mash or shepherd’s pie — during a British-style pub lunch. Then head ashore to savor fresh ingredients and iconic dishes, including fresh Greek salads and Italian gelato. From ship to shore, taste the best of abroad with Princess.
Sip and savor
Home to some of the best vineyards in the world, Europe knows a thing or two about wine — and so does Princess. Visit Vines wine bar, one of the best-stocked cellars at sea, and sample an assortment of reds and whites. Unwind with a drink in hand at Crooners, a vintage Sinatra-era cocktail lounge. Or enjoy a glass from the comfort of your stateroom balcony while taking in views of Europe’s most inspiring shorelines.
Cultural Immersion
Dive even deeper
On a European cruise, explore destinations even at sea. Learn from local experts — like musicians, dancers, athletes and chefs — who come on board to show you the unique personality of each region. Or listen to stories from international crew members, many of whom call these lands home. Even kids can awaken their sense of wonder with our Youth and Teen Centers, created in partnership with Discovery™ and Animal Planet™.
Entertainment
Find your joy
Embark on adventures by day, and indulge in entertainment by night. Watch Movies Under the Stars® at our 300-square-foot outdoor theater. Attend original productions from Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz, composer of Wicked . Or learn traditional moves, like Flamenco or Irish stepdance, and listen to popular music from the destinations on your itinerary. On a European cruise with Princess, the choice is yours.
Celebrations & Romance
Love blooms on The Love Boat
It's difficult to imagine something more romantic than sailing through the alluring cities and charming countryside of Europe. While on board your European cruise, we cater to your sentimental side with private dining on your balcony — like breakfast for two or a sunset dinner — honeymoon packages, flowers and chocolates delivered to your room and couples-only massages in the Sanctuary.

The most popular time to cruise to Europe is during the summer months, but the shoulder seasons of spring and fall are prime times to see the continent with fewer crowds. Cruise lines sail to Europe year-round, with special voyages to view the northern lights, visit holiday markets and other wintry wonders, but there are notably less sailings during the months of January through February.
The majority of oceangoing cruise lines offer itineraries in Europe, crisscrossing the countries of Northern, Eastern and Western Europe. Princess Cruises, Celebrity, Norwegian, Regent, Azamara, Silversea, Royal Caribbean, Crystal, Holland America and more cruise lines have itineraries here. Europe is also a popular destination on river cruise lines such as Viking, Avalon, Emerald, Scenic, AmaWaterways, Uniworld and more, heading to a number of rivers including the Danube, Rhine or Douro.
What are some things to do in Europe?
Do you need a passport to take a cruise to europe, what should i pack for a cruise to europe.
Lots of sightseeing in Europe is done on foot down cobblestone streets -- pack comfortable shoes. Consider bringing clothes for both sightseeing by day and attending the opera at night, if that’s your thing. A simple pashmina or shawl for women helps keep out the chill and covers shoulders for cathedral or mosque visits. For more tips: 10 Must-Pack Items for a European Cruise .

Western Europe Cruises
A Europe cruise is perfect if you want to get to know new places and cultures. In Western Europe you enjoy the European standards and always get to find out something new. Did you know that in the Netherlands you often get to see the garden through the houses? This is a sign that the Dutch have nothing to hide. The UK and France have become indispensable for a Western Europe cruise. Things get warmer on Mediterranean cruises and more exotic on Canary cruises and Azores cruises who also belong to Europe and are always worth a visit.

European culture right around the corner
A cruise to Europe combines exciting cultures, vibrant cities and culinary highlights with a huge benefit: The places to visit are just around the corner! Admire the Harry Potter city of Edinburgh in Scotland, stroll along the canals of Amsterdam and soak up the sun in Lisbon . From cold Nordic weather to Summer temperatures , you can experience everything during a Europe cruise!
Top attractions during a European cruise
You can experience so many different countries on your European cruise, such as Belgium , The Netherlands , France , Portugal , Spain and the British Isles . Let’s start in the British Isles, which include UK and Ireland among others. In Dover, discover the majestic chalk cliffs that line the British coast to the mainland. Experience the happy traditional dance performance of Irish Riverdance in Dublin's pubs and historic remains in Southampton. Also a trip to England's capital, London, is worth it. Packed with history and many sightseeing opportunities such as Buckingham Palace, The London Eye and the Thames.
Next stop: Amsterdam ! The capital of the Netherlands is known for its artistic heritage. The Dutch city is one of the most popular in Europe, yet it is versatile and at the same time compact. So you can collect many different experiences in a short time. If you love museums, this is the place for you. First, there is the world-famous Van Gogh Museum , which brings you closer to the different creative phases of the world-famous, Dutch painter. In the Anne Frank house experience the story of the Jewish girl who hid with her family in this house from the Nazis and wrote a diary. Lighter fare can be found in the numerous coffee shops selling not only cannabis but also normal drinks and snacks. For a little romance take a canal cruise on the small canals - especially in the evening - an unforgettable experience!
The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam , is also thrilling. In addition to the largest seaport in Europe, it is also the most important commercial and industrial city. The diversity of the city has contributed to the popularity of the city. Fans of art and architecture will be particularly happy. Just look at the Erasmus Bridge , a cable-stayed bridge reminiscent of an oversized harp - WOW! The Markthal Rotterdam is also an experience. The first fully covered market hall in the Netherlands not only awaits you with great delicacies, but also fascinates you with its glass facade from the outside. If you would like to discover the maritime vein of the city, then head over the ornate, white bridges to the Old harbour . Here, small sailboats, one-masts and barges are shallow in the gentle waves. Experience the cozy atmosphere at night with its colourful lights.
Continue to Belgium, to Zeebrugge , to be exact. The small port city belongs to the city of Bruges and is only about 20 kilometres from the centre. In no other European city will you feel so much moved to the Middle Ages as in the Belgian town. Stroll through the narrow streets, along the canals and watch how carriages make the spectacle perfect. Highly recommended is the view from the Belfry , a medieval bell tower. The Holy Blood Basilica is worth a visit, as it is the oldest sacred building in the city. The most famous and popular photo opportunity of the city can be found at Rozenhoedkaai. From here you have a wonderful view of the canals and the back of the Holy Blood Basilica.
The next stop takes you to another country at the same time: Le Havre in France. Le Havre is the largest city in Normandy and the second largest seaport in France. Since about 80% of the city was destroyed in World War II, today you will find a modern city centre, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 due to the extraordinary postwar architecture.
Lisbon is also a popular city on a Western Europe cruise. The Portuguese capital scores with year-round average temperatures of over 20 degrees. In addition, the melancholy, slightly dilapidated city exudes an unforgettable charm. The city is located on seven hills, but with the historic tram , these are easily manageable. Catch a ride on number 28 to experience a spectacular ride through the narrow streets. Get off at the Castelo stop and walk a few minutes directly to Sao Jorge Castle . A wonderful view of the old town and the red bridge Ponte 25 de Abril and the famous statue Cristo do Rei awaits you. You should not miss the architecturally impressive Jeronimos Monastery with its beautiful courtyard. The building, which was almost completely preserved in the 1755 earthquake, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Let’s not forget the fantastic beaches on offer! Visit the beach Carcavelos, where not only swimmers but also surfers get their money's worth.
Culinary highlights
A Western European cruise offers a range of culinary highlights.. In Belgium try the famous Belgian fries and the delicious waffles with toppings like cream and strawberries - just delicious! In Portugal, fresh fish, especially sardines, are often served. Stews, meat dishes and grilled chicken (Frango Piri-Piri) are very popular. As a treat in between, the pasteis de nata, small pudding pies are tasty treats!
Best travel time
The best travel time for a cruise along Western Europe is between May and October. Here you will find pleasant temperatures and the rainy days are limited to a minimum. Due to its location in the temperate climate mild Winters and rather cool summers are on the program.
Best cruise lines
Popular cruise lines include AIDA Cruises and TUI Cruises . Experience British flair on board with P&O Cruises . Holland America Line and Cunard exude classic atmospheres and Oceania Cruises brings you luxurious moments on board.

The cruise was beautiful and very scenic especially the loreley strip. The restaurant staff were extremely friendly and warm. Special mention of Ida, Kenan and Sugana . The rest of the crew were very accommodating too. The tour leader Jessica and Jordi was super and helpful although we were the only few English speakers she made us feel included. Moscow shooting latest: More than 130 killed in concert attack; all gunmen detained, Putin says; terrorist 'tackled by spectator'
Last night, gunmen opened fire on crowds at a concert hall in Krasnogorsk in the Moscow region, killing at least 133 and injuring more than 100. Islamic State has said it was behind the attack, but the FSB says suspects had Ukrainian contacts and were attempting to flee over the border.

A giant electronic screen on a Moscow building is displaying the words "we mourn" alongside a candle and the date of yesterday's attack.
Elsewhere in the Russian capital, mourners have been leaving flowers and tributes.
A team member working with the band set to perform at the Crocus Concert Hall last night hid in the dressing room during the attack, according to Russian news agency RIA Novosti.
The head of Picnic's production managed to get out of the building through the basement after hiding.
Last night, RIA reported a member of the group was initially uncontactable but later found.
Updates have been coming in at pace since yesterday's attack at Crocus City Hall near Moscow.
If you're just joining us or need a recap, here is what you should know.
Four men, armed with Kalashnikov automatic weapons, arrived in a van at the concert venue in Krasnogorsk at 7.40pm yesterday, before killing at least 133 people and wounding more than 100.
Video showed people rushing for the exits as the attackers walked through the concert hall aiming and then firing in bursts at civilians.
They then set fire to the building, according to Russian investigators.
Some witnesses said the men poured a liquid on seating and curtains in several places before igniting it.
The gunmen
Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it detained 11 people including the four gunmen.
The men had fled the venue by car into the Bryansk region - 210 miles southwest of Moscow, Russian media reported.
Some of the suspects were shown being interrogated on the side of the road in footage published by Russian media and Telegram channels with close ties to the Kremlin.
With his hands tied and his hair held by an interrogator, one suspect said he "shot people" for half a million roubles.
Another suspect was shown being marched out of a forest, his face covered in blood from what appeared to be an ear injury.
Who was behind it?
Islamic State said they carried out the attack, the group's Amaq news agency said last night.
"The attack comes within the context of a raging war between the Islamic State and countries fighting Islam," Amaq added in a statement citing security sources.
The US has intelligence confirming Islamic State's claim, two US officials told Reuters.
Another told our partner network NBC News there was no reason to doubt the group was responsible.
Prior warning
US officials said America had warned Russia in recent weeks about the possibility of an imminent "extremist" attack, with the US embassy in Moscow also issuing a warning to American citizens.
Hours before the embassy warning, the FSB said it had foiled an attack on a Moscow synagogue by Islamic State's affiliate in Afghanistan, which is known as ISIS-Khorasan or ISIS-K.
ISIS-K seeks a caliphate across Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran.
Putin points finger at Ukraine
Vladimir Putin claimed the attackers were heading towards Ukraine when they were detained, and that a "window" had been prepared for them to cross the border - without providing evidence.
Ukraine has denied any involvement in the attack.
Tune in at 6pm tonight for a special programme with Yalda Hakim focusing on the Moscow attack.
You can watch live at the top of this page or follow the key moments in the blog.
"All that happened stays in my eyes, in my ears. This is pain."
These were the words of survivor Margarita Bunova as she described yesterday's attack on the Crocus Concert Hall.
She told of screaming, panic, and fleeing as bullets "crackled" through the venue.
Watch her speak below...
The US has no reason to doubt claims made by Islamic State that the group carried out the concert hall attack, a US official has said.
The official told our partner network NBC News that there were no indications of any Ukrainian involvement.
Earlier today, Vladimir Putin claimed - without providing evidence - that "a window had been prepared" in Ukraine for the attackers to flee through.
"[IS] has a long-demonstrated history of targeting Russia and neighbouring countries," the US official said.
America believes no US citizens were killed in the attack, the official added.
An audience member attacked one of the gunmen at Crocus City Hall and "neutralised" him, according to the Russian Investigative Committee.
The committee said he was trying to protect his wife as the gunmen shot at the crowds gathered for a rock concert.
The man disarmed the attacker while he was reloading, Russian Telegram channel Baza reported.
"With his active and decisive actions, he saved the lives of the people around him at that moment," said the committee.
Committee chief Alexander Bastrykin has ordered he be nominated for an award for his "unparalleled courage".
Russia's interior ministry says all four of the gunmen who attacked Crocus City Hall near Moscow last night are foreign nationals.
There has been much speculation regarding the attackers' nationalities, with suggestions they could be from Tajikistan or even that they are Russian citizens.
The ministry did not confirm their nationalities or identities.
As we reported earlier, mourners have been gathering outside the Crocus City Hall to pay their respects to the 133 people who have been confirmed dead so far - after gunmen stormed the venue last night.
Some who had gathered stopped to watch Vladimir Putin's address on mobile phones, and a steady stream of mourners have continued to arrive since then.
Sky's international correspondent Ivor Bennett examines why Islamic State would target Russia - and how Moscow may respond to last night's attack.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP
!{Model.Description}
The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.
The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.
The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.
Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
