Can you tell us a little bit about Music Travel Love? How did you get its start? What made you both come together and start pursuing a professional music career as a duo?
After years of auditioning for music labels, and never feeling that they quite got us, or for that matter we quite got them, we came to the conclusion that we may as well pursue what we loved and quit wasting our time trying to be what record label executives wanted. So after a short discussion we came to the conclusion that we loved making music, we totally enjoyed traveling, and we wanted to spend time with our families, thus the name Music Travel love. How did we get together – same egg – we are identical twins from a set of triplets, and we have an older brother, haha. We actually started as a duo in Thailand under SonyBMG Music back in 2005.
You started working together since your childhood as The Moffats in 1998. What is it like working as siblings?
We loved playing with our brothers; there’s a special tightness with brotherly harmonies – but hey, we are brothers, so we do have our differences, but those are short-lived.
How did you both come up with the idea of taking your music on the road to such scenic spots?
Actually, we were talking with a friend that worked for an RV manufacturer, and he was suggesting maybe we could travel around in his RV and perform at campgrounds. Well, that idea never came to fruition, but the idea of traveling to remote locations and recording our videos may have spawned from that; in any case, it seems to be working, and we are grateful for that.
How do you choose where to film? What has been your favorite location to record in so far, and why?
Quite often, we have tied in our video shoots with live performances. However, prior to COVID-19, we were asked by a number of countries Departments of Tourism like India, New Caledonia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam to come film in their countries. Now they are on hold, but they still want us to come. As for a favorite location, that would be tough because they are all such cool experiences.
What is the biggest challenge you face whenever you’re recording outside?
WIND!!!!!!!
Who are some of your musical influences? How do you choose the songs you will cover?
Bryan Adams, The Beatles, we really love music, so we pretty much listen to it all. At first, we picked songs we liked and thought would be cool to cover, but as time marched on we decided we are actually doing this for the fans, so we look for songs that fit our vocals, that we feel we can make the original artist proud (John Fogerty liked our cover), and that the songs were pretty big hits so lots of people can identify them!
Any particular song you’ve been itching to cover in the future?
There are a few, but you’ll have to wait and see – that said, we do want to pay our respect to Bryan Adams, Elvis, and The Beatles somewhere down the road.
You collaborated with Summer Overstreet for your cover of Randy Travis’ “Forever and Ever, Amen,” are there any more artists you want to collaborate with?
We have written a lot of songs with Summer, who, by the way, is Paul Overstreet’s daughter, who just happened to write our biggest cover, “When You Say Nothing At All,” and “Forever and Ever, Amen.” As for collaborations in the future, maybe but nothing planned for our signature videos, but we will be doing a few Instagram Live, with artists from other countries, like Thailand and Brazil.
Are you working on any original music? When can fans expect to hear it?
We are, and as soon as we get the first video shot, we will release track #1 sometime in the next couple of months.
Where are your next destinations?
Thanks to COVID likely somewhere in the Eastern US.
You’ve been successful as a duo, what is your advice for young and aspiring artists?
David Foster once told us, “Guys there is no easy road, you’ve got to do this on your own, and when it happens you will be able to truly appreciate all of the hard work and effort it took to get there.”
Hopefully, young aspiring artists will understand that it’s a job – we put in 8 to 10 hours a day, on writing, recording, and Social Media, with maybe one day off a week, at home and on the road. As Alan Jackson once said, “Success is just 5 short years away.”

The Ultimate Travel Playlist: 100 Best Travel Songs (with Lyrics and Videos)

Music has the power to transport us, change our moods, and conjure memories. And, for many travelers, music is closely linked to travel. It can helps us understand the people and culture of a place, break down language barriers, and sear certain moments into our memories forever.
With help from members of our Travel Community and Going staff, we've created the ultimate travel playlist of 100 travel songs. Some reference specific places, others showcase the musical talent of a specific country, and others simply celebrate the joy of exploration.
Here, in no particular order, are 100 of our favorite travel songs.
56 songs that reference specific places in the title or lyrics
Sure, some of these songs, such Paris by the Chainsmokers or Toto’s Africa , actually have little to do with the specific place; it’s just used as the title or the setting for the story. But others not only reference a country or city, they also evoke a specific sense of that particular place or tell a story about that destination.
For example, in Marrakech Express , Crosby, Stills & Nash recount scenes from a train ride Nash actually took in 1966. In London Calling , the Clash sing about the social issues facing London in the late 70s. In Walking in Memphis , Marc Cohn croons about his experience wandering the city. And Simon & Garfunkel's America was inspired by a road trip that Paul Simon took with his girlfriend.
Here are some of our favorite songs that mention a specific city or country, and a snippet of the lyrics.
Listen when: you're on a $388 flight to Vienna, or a $671 flight to Johannesburg, or a $353 flight to Paris, or...

4. Africa – Toto
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless, longing for some solitary company

I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become
It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never have

Of the drifting tide
I didn't ever want to come down
From that west coast rush and summer high
And easy, peaceful sense of time
54. Brazil – Declan McKenna
I wanna play the beautiful game while I'm in Brazil
'Cause everybody plays the beautiful game while out in Brazil
'Cause it's all you've ever wanted, and it's all that you want still
Don't you wanna play the beautiful game out in Brazil?
55. Under African Skies – Paul Simon
Joseph's face was as black as the night
And the pale yellow moon shone in his eyes
His path was marked
By the stars in the Southern Hemisphere
And he walked the length of his days
Under African skies
56. Take It Easy – The Eagles
Well I'm a standin' on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
Such a fine sight to see
It's a girl, my lord, in a flatbed
Ford slowin' down to take a look at me
Come on baby
Don't say maybe
I gotta know if your sweet love is gonna save me
We may lose and we may win
Though we will never be here again
So open up, I'm climbin' in
Take it easy

Searchin' for my lost shaker of salt
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know it's my own damn fault
94. Moon River – Audrey Hepburn

Silently for me

A thousand times
I've got no roots, but my home was never on the ground

The essential country music road trip playlist
Posted: December 15, 2023 | Last updated: December 15, 2023
One of the most important parts of planning a road trip — even before you head to the gas station or pack the snacks — is curating the right playlist. If you're a country music fan, you're fortunate in that the genre is positively replete with songs that are perfect to crank loud while you're driving the open road.
Flip through the slideshow below for 20 essential country road trip tunes, from classics like Willie Nelson's "On The Road Again" to Luke Combs's chart-topping cover of "Fast Car."
"On The Road Again," Willie Nelson
No road trip would be complete without Willie Nelson's 1980 classic "On The Road Again," perfect for when you're traveling with a big group of friends for a weekend getaway.
You may also like: The definitive The Who playlist
"Amarillo By Morning," George Strait
George Strait's seminal 1973 song "Amarillo By Morning," about a broken-down rodeo cowboy making his way around the country, is a perfect song to blare while you're driving through the vast expanses of the American West.

"King of the Road," Roger Miller
If you've ever had to travel on a budget, you can probably relate to the vagabond protagonist in "King of the Road." It's been a country road trip staple since 1965, and is perfect for a group singalong in the car when everyone's starting to get a little sleepy.
You may also like: The definitive Pink Floyd playlist
"80s Mercedes," Maren Morris
Whether or not you're a "'90s baby," anyone can appreciate the breezy, top-down vibes of Maren Morris's "80s Mercedes." Even if you're not driving a convertible, roll the windows down and turn the volume up when this one comes on.
"Wagon Wheel," Darius Rucker
Originally recorded by Old Crow Medicine Show, with lyrics by Bob Dylan, "Wagon Wheel" is a road trip staple, especially for anyone who's traveling through the Southeastern United States. And even if you're not "headed down south to the land of the pines," this song is perfect for any destination.

"Heads Carolina, Tails California," Jo Dee Messina
Even if it isn't possible for most of us do something as spontaneous as choosing your vacation destination with the flip of a coin, it's still fun to daydream about the prospect while listening to Jo Dee Messina sing "Heads Carolina, Tails California" while driving down the highway.
"East Bound and Down," Jerry Reed
Heading east? This Jerry Reed classic is the perfect way to get in the mood for a long drive, and no one will blame you for (safely) pretending like you're living in that scene from "Smokey and the Bandit" when it starts playing over the speakers.

"Traveller," Chris Stapleton
"Traveller," the title track of Chris Stapleton's smash debut album, is a must for anyone who's got a heavy case of wanderlust.

Even if you don't quite have the vocal prowess of Johnny & June, grab your significant other and head out on the road while playing "Jackson," a perfect song for even the happiest couples to harmonize to in the car.

"Life Is A Highway," Rascal Flatts
Okay, it's a little cheesy, but there's no denying the appeal of blaring "Life Is A Highway" while you're speeding down an actual highway headed toward a killer vacation.
"Toes," Zac Brown Band
If you're driving toward a beachy destination, make sure that "Toes" is definitely on your road trip playlist. While you're stuck in traffic, it's a good reminder to think about all the relaxing on the sand you'll be doing as soon as you arrive.

"Take Me Home, Country Roads," John Denver
Arguably best saved for your return trip home, "Take Me Home, Country Roads" is ideal for those moments when you're trying to stay motivated to finish those last few hours of driving.

Travel | trump bond lowered to $175 million as he appeals civil fraud judgment in new york, travel | travel troubleshooter: vrbo promised to cover my rental bill in hawaii, so why won’t it.
DEAR TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER: My family and I recently rented a house through Vrbo for a vacation stay in Hawaii. When we entered the home, we were immediately hit with a strong smell of mold. Upon further inspection, we noted and took pictures of black mold located on the smoke detector, the pictures hanging on the walls, the shower stall and the windowsills.
One of the members of my party is a 17-year-old who has severe asthma. She has been hospitalized in the past on several occasions for this and continues to be under the direct care of a respiratory specialist. So, I immediately contacted the homeowner, who was very kind and suggested that we get in touch with Vrbo for assistance. The homeowner offered to cancel the reservation if we did not feel comfortable staying there.
I contacted Vrbo, and a representative assured me that we were covered by its “Book With Confidence Guarantee.” Vrbo sent us an email authorizing us to spend $15,138 for a new place, which was double what we originally paid. The new place was $21,014, but we had no choice, since there was an extremely limited inventory available on Oahu for seven people at the last minute. A representative assured me that Vrbo would cover the entire amount.
I just received a follow-up email from Vrbo this morning, stating that “upon research into this matter, it has been determined that the requested reimbursement is not available through the Book With Confidence program due to the temporary nature of the cleanliness issues reported.” Can you help me get Vrbo to cover the new rental, as promised?
— Cheryl Mander, Surrey, British Columbia, Canada
ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear about your moldy rental. You did the right thing by contacting the owner first and then Vrbo. And you really followed the Elliott Method by getting almost everything in writing, including Vrbo’s promise to cover you for up to $15,138 in additional lodging expenses. This is a reasonable offer, given that it was a last-minute reservation in Hawaii.
Vrbo’s Book With Confidence Guarantee promises if the property was materially misrepresented in the listing, it will help you book a new reservation. The Vrbo agent with whom you spoke said it would apply to your situation, and I agree.
Your case is a reminder to always get everything in writing, especially when it comes to promises about covering your extra costs. At a minimum, you could have asked the Vrbo representative to make a notation in your record that you were authorized to spend $21,014.
If Vrbo continued to reject your invoice, you could have reached out to one of the Vrbo executives I list on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org . In the end, it took an effort by both of us to get this resolved.
You wrote to the executives, and I contacted Vrbo separately. The company apologized and agreed to refund you $15,138 and cover the two nights that you had to spend in a hotel. You accepted its offer.

Dolly Parton Thinks Beyoncé Recorded a "Jolene" Cover for Her Upcoming Album
Beyonce's Act II comes out on March 29!
Beyoncé is stepping into the world of country, and covering a Dolly Parton song may just be on her country music to-do list. In a recent interview with Knox News , Parton hinted at the possibility of Beyonce covering her 1973 hit "Jolene." "Well, I think she has! I think she's recorded 'Jolene' and I think it's probably gonna be on her country album, which I'm very excited about that," Parton told Know News .
Parton has, thus far, been nothing but supportive of Beyoncé and her entrance into the country music space. "I love her! She's a beautiful girl and a great singer," the "9 to 5" singer said. Dolly even gave Beyoncé a shoutout on her Instagram when her single "Texas Hold 'Em" hit number one on the Billboard Hot Country Chart, making her the first Black woman in history to do so. "I'm a big fan of Beyoncé and very excited that she's done a country album. So congratulations on your Billboard Hot Country number one single. Can't wait to hear the full album," Dolly wrote on Instagram.
Beyonce first announced her album and dropped two singles, "Texas Hold 'Em" and "16 Carriages," in February. She revealed the surprise in a Verizon commercial during the Super Bowl. As for the remaining songs on Act II, Beyonce has her lips sealed until its official release on March 29.
Considering country is not Beyonce's default genre ( Act I: Renaissance consisted of her usual dance tracks), her new music has found some detractors. Dolly came to her defense once again saying, "A lot of people don't realize Beyoncé is a country girl. She's from Texas. I think we belong wherever we can do good, and her song is number one across every chart in the whole world, I think. So, I mean, who can argue with that?" Dolly said in her Know News interview.
For now, we'll have to wait until March 29 to see whether or not "Jolene" made the cut for Cowboy Carter.

Beyoncé Explains Meaning Of Her New Album, Cowboy Carter
“This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”
Beyoncé’s country album is almost upon us, but don’t call it a country album . On March 19, the singer unveiled the cover art of her upcoming album, Cowboy Carter , and explained the record’s meaning in a letter posted to Instagram, saying it’s been “over five years in the making.”
“It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed…and it was very clear that I wasn’t,” she wrote. “But, because of that experience, I did a deeper dive into the history of Country music and studied our rich musical archive.”
While Bey didn’t specify what she went through, she’s likely referring to her performance at the 2016 Country Music Awards with The Chicks, which received hatred from some country listeners. Stage designer Es Devlin revealed in an interview with British Vogue that the Western-inspired visuals on the Renaissance World Tour were born from that experience.
“I think she had a really bad experience at a country music award show, and she wanted to research its African-American roots,” Devlin said. “She discovered that 50 percent of cowboys were Black, in the 19th and early 20th century, and country music, of course, has been largely appropriated. She wanted to reappropriate Americana and country music from a Black perspective.”
Beyoncé also addressed the negativity she received while dabbling in country music, saying it motivated this album. “The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” she wrote. “act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”
While she hasn’t revealed the tracklist yet, beyond the first two singles, “Texas Hold ‘Em” and “16 Carriages,” Bey did tease that she had “a few surprises” up her sleeve. “I have collaborated with some brilliant artists who I deeply respect,” she said. “I hope that you can hear my heart and soul, and all the love and passion that I poured into every detail and every sound.”
Beyoncé said she was “honored” to be the first Black woman to top the Country Songs chart with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” thanking fans for the achievement. “That would not have happened without the outpouring of support from each and every one of you,” she said. “My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant.”
She concluded her letter by saying Cowboy Carter was a continuation of her last album Renaissance. Her goal was to create “another journey” that fans could listen to from beginning to end — with no skips.
“This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album,” she declared. “This is act ii COWBOY CARTER, and I am proud to share it with y’all!”

Kelly Clarkson’s 20 Best Kellyoke Covers
By Ilana Kaplan
Ilana Kaplan
In a sea of daytime television, the down-to-earth energy and heartwarming chat fests of The Kelly Clarkson Show have turned Clarkson into a singular voice in the talk show space. So has one of her regular segments, — Kellyoke — which has become an all-around favorite for fans of the TV series and her pop career alike. While the American Idol winner is no stranger to toying with genre when it comes to incorporating rock, R&B and soul elements in her pop songwriting, Clarkson has used Kellyoke to continually surprise audiences— covering everything from Olivia Rodrigo’s devastating ballad “Traitor” to Third Eye Blind’s “anti-suicide rock anthem “Jumper.”
With five seasons of The Kelly Clarkson Show under her belt, it’s tough to narrow down her best covers. Still, we gave it a whirl. Here are the 20 best Kellyoke classics so far.
‘7 Rings’ (Ariana Grande)
Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” is a playful trap-pop-meets-R&B ode to friendship, female empowerment, and the rush of buying yourself lavish gifts. Kelly Clarkson put her own sassy twist on the track. Backed by her band, Clarkson ditches the glossiness of the original, opting for a more straightforward R&B approach and leaning into her lower register.
‘Free’ (Florence + the Machine)
Both Florence Welch and Clarkson have towering voices, so it’s no surprise that one of the TV host’s best covers is a Florence + the Machine track. While the original version of “Free” is a euphoric rocker teeming with an anxious synth-rock backbeat that highlights Welch’s towering vocals, Clarkson’s rendition is slightly slower. Still, it allows her to toy with her vocal runs on the chorus — delivering more than one impressive whistle note.
‘Tennessee Whiskey’ (Chris Stapleton)
Don’t let the pedal steel fool you: “Tennessee Whiskey” is arguably more of an R&B song than a country one. But that’s what makes it the ideal track for Clarkson to cover. While Chris Stapleton’s soulful lilt is more subdued, the talk show host leans into her falsetto for a gospel-tinged version of the country star’s track.
‘Don’t Let Go (Love)’ (En Vogue)
With her cover of En Vogue’s “Don’t Let Go (Love),” Clarkson makes a solid case for why she could have thrived in a Nineties R&B girl group. While the original track is stirring on its own, Clarkson brings a new level of theatricality to it, playing with her vocal texture and tone throughout the chorus with a flurry of high-pitched harmonies.
‘Yellow’ (Coldplay)
For Clarkson’s take on Coldplay’s 2000 classic “Yellow,” she ditches the more delicate elements of the song and goes full-throttle, turning it into a rock opus. It’s the singer’s belt — her vocal one, not her beloved accessory — on the chorus that creates an explosive anthem that stands on its own.
‘Mr. Brightside’ (The Killers)
“Mr. Brightside” is the go-to karaoke song for a generation, so it’s no surprise that Clarkson decided to put her spin on The Killers’ classic. Though she keeps some of the angsty alternative elements of the track — particularly during the chorus — Clarkson channels the softer flourishes of her pop-punk-tinged hit “Since U Been Gone” for her take.
‘Bulletproof’ (La Roux)
The 2009 electro-pop smash “Bulletproof” has lived on as an infectious dancefloor favorite that has been given the cover treatment by many different artists. But Clarkson’s backing band puts a funky twist to the freewheeling melody and allows her to add some attitude to the vocals. The result? A brassy number exploding with confidence.
‘The Only Exception’ (Paramore)
While many of Paramore’s earlier numbers were pop-punk driven, “The Only Exception” was a stark departure — a stripped-back, soulful ballad about the double-edged sword of love. With only the accompaniment of an acoustic guitar, Clarkson doesn’t diverge much from the simplicity of the original’s melody. However, she opens the song with a syrupy lilt and doesn’t hold back on belting her way through the chorus.
‘Bad Romance’ (Lady Gaga)
When Lady Gaga released “Bad Romance,” she didn’t shy away from bringing the drama. Clarkson didn’t either when she put her own spin on the 2008 pop classic. Her backing band turns the track into a funk-tinged number, where Clarkson delivers the “love, love, love” line with a swaggery alto and uses Gaga’s blueprint to go off-script with her own towering vocal runs.
‘I Wanna Get Better’ (Bleachers)
There are some Clarkson covers that are arguably as good — if not better than — the originals. The talk show host’s take on “I Wanna Get Better,” Bleachers Eighties-tinged self-improvement anthem, is one of them. On it, Clarkson turns Jack Antonoff’s indie hit into a sunny, reggae-tinged pop anthem primed for radio.
‘Queen of the Night’ (Whitney Houston)
It’s no small feat to cover a Whitney Houston song, but Clarkson manages to take one on and turn it into something that completely stands on its own. While the original is flanked by its thumping dance-pop beat and Houston’s jazzy rock vocals, the pop star’s spin on the song adds a metal edge to the chorus against a backdrop of brash guitar riffs.
‘Jaded’ (Miley Cyrus)
Miley Cyrus’s version of “Jaded” is a swaggery pop ballad, but Clarkson tones her interpretation down quite a bit without forfeiting the original’s kiss-off attitude.Kelly turns the track into a softer R&B number and adds an array of chilling key changes that make it a showstopper.
‘Clean’ (Taylor Swift)
Taylor Swift’s 1989 cut “Clean” is a powerful, synth-folk song steeped in heartbreak, and Clarkson maintains that mood. Still, she makes it uniquely her own. Clarkson strips away the synth and gravitates toward a slight country twang as she embraces her lower register in a romanticized rendition of the track.
‘Uptown Funk’ (Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars)
Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” was already an energetic pastiche of groovy retro-funk with an undeniably catchy chorus. With Clarkson at the helm, the song gains a new layer of raw vocal sass and a bouncier backdrop that gives the original a run for its money.
‘Seven Nation Army’ (The White Stripes)
Clarkson’s take on “Seven Nation Army” is once again proof that she’d have no regrets if she went full-steam ahead with a rock record. While the White Stripes’ original is a tension-building creeper steeped in gritty guitar work, Clarkson’s is slightly more polished thanks to her backing band. But her sultrier twist on the vocals, delivered with some added punk flair, turned her talk show’s set into a DIY basement show.
‘Edge of Seventeen’ (Stevie Nicks)
Clarkson took covering Stevie Nicks so seriously, she put on her best choker and flowy top for her performance of “Edge of Seventeen.” Like the original, Clarkson’s rendition features a signature chugging guitar and largely embraces Nicks’ signature smoky tone. However, Clarkson’s vocals can rarely be contained as her throbbing vibrato and whistle notes bring the Bella Donna classic to a whole new dimension.
‘Like Eating Glass’ (Bloc Party)
Bloc Party’s bombastic indie classic “Like Eating Glass” isn’t the type of track that one would associate with belting. But Clarkson’s knack for breaking down and rebuilding songs with her protean vocals turns the churning dance-rock song into a soaring rock anthem — and its own track altogether.
‘My Love Mine All Mine’ (Mitski)
While the pedal steel -flanked “My Love Mine All Mine” has the intimacy of a lullaby, carried by Mitski’s hushed lilt, Clarkson approaches the track from a place of longing. Like Mitski, Clarkson initially maintains a steady tone, with some weightier vocal work; however, toward its dramatic conclusion, Kerlly the track into an impassioned plea, swelling with stunning shouts of desperation. It’s an unexpected twist that leaves listeners with chills.
‘Happier Than Ever’ (Billie Eilish)
The anchor of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” is the second half of the track and its transition into an explosive rock melody, and Clarkson leans into that, channeling her raw angst into the back section of the song over the bombastic guitar and drum melody that has been exponentially dialed up. You can feel Clarkson seething during her perfoemance, and it’s what turns the song into a rock opera of her own making.
‘Fake Plastic Trees’ (Radiohead)
Picking the number one Kellyoke cover wasn’t easy but her take on “Fake Plastic Trees” is so effortlessly stunning it takes the prize. While still capturing the near-holiness of the Radiohead classic, she brings her own pop sensibility to the track, skillfully adding drama to the song’s signature crescendo with her crystalline vocal runs. Nothing about the cover is overdone. Clarkson preserves the original tone of “Fake Plastic Trees,” while giving it even more dimension as the song builds.

Beyoncé’s Act II album cover is ‘a clapback to being told she doesn’t belong in country music’
The singer announced her next record on Instagram with a photo of herself riding a horse and wearing red, white and blue
T he countdown to Beyoncé’s next album, Act II, is officially on, marked by the superstar herself on Instagram. In a post that doubled as the album art drop, Beyoncé revealed an image of herself riding a white horse, holding an American flag, decked out in red, white and blue.
“This album has been over five years in the making,” wrote Beyoncé in the accompanying caption. “It was born out of an experience that I had years ago where I did not feel welcomed … and it was very clear that I wasn’t.” In 2016, the singer faced backlash from the mainstream country community after releasing a country song.
Act II’s album cover plays with country music’s iconography, from the horse to the boots, flag and 10-gallon hat. Francesca T Royster, an English professor at DePaul University and author of Black Country Music: Listening for Revolutions, believes these references are intended to provoke discussion.
“The aesthetic choice is bold and seems to be signaling the ways that Beyoncé is putting herself into conversations about nationalism, a theme very much central to discourses about country music, patriotism and authenticity, from the times of its origins,” Royster said.
In the caption, Beyoncé wrote: “My hope is that years from now, the mention of an artist’s race, as it relates to releasing genres of music, will be irrelevant.”
She said that after a “deeper dive into the history of country music” she “saw how music can unite so many people around the world, while also amplifying the voices of some of the people who have dedicated so much of their lives educating on our musical history”.
Diverse artists have influenced the genre from its inception, as the musician Rhiannon Giddens pointed out last month in the Guardian – enslaved people in the Caribbean invented string instruments that would become the basis for the modern-day banjo, and centuries later the Black songwriter Lesley Riddle composed a number of hits in the 1930s for the first family of country music, the Carter Family. But to this day, the face of country music remains largely white and rural.
This tradition runs so deep that Beyoncé recently became the first Black woman to reach No 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. That distinction came courtesy of the album’s first single, Texas Hold ’Em. This, despite the fact that one radio station initially refused to play the song, while commentators like the former Dukes of Hazzard star John Schneider compared Beyoncé’s foray into the genre to a “dog … mark[ing] every tree”.
The caption also promised surprise guests and collaborators. Last week, Dolly Parton revealed that Beyoncé had recorded a cover of her 1973 classic Jolene, which may appear on Act II.
Though the songs may have a twang to them, Beyoncé ended her caption by writing: “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.’
The image of Beyoncé on a horse, taken by the photographer Blair Caldwell , recalls her last cover for Renaissance, her dance album that borrowed heavily from house music. In that album’s artwork, Beyoncé sat on a mirrored, disco-ball horse. The country music journalist Marissa R Moss, meanwhile, speculated that the cover might be inspired by the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo, a decades-old Black rodeo. Royster believes the influence for Act II’s imagery goes back even further. “I’m thinking of presidential portraits like those of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart and Charles Wilson Peale.”
The painter Kehinde Wiley may be best known for his depiction of Barack Obama, which hangs in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. But in 2010, a commissioned portrait of Michael Jackson depicted him atop a white horse, looking like a monarch in deluxe armor and a flowing cape. Royster says Act II’s artwork bears a resemblance to that image. “[Beyoncé’s cover] is an allusion to Black artistic interventions and reframing,” she said.
Those who are unfamiliar of with country music and cowboy culture’s Black heritage may find Beyoncé’s use of these symbols provocative. Perhaps she wants it that way. “These images are definitely a clapback to the experience of being told she doesn’t belong in country music that she experienced after the 2016 CMA performance of Daddy Lessons,” said Royster.
That year, Beyoncé released Lemonade, a groundbreaking concept album written about her husband Jay-Z’s infidelity. One of her singles, Daddy Lessons, was a country track, which the singer performed at the Country Music Awards with the Chicks. But some in the country community turned their back on Beyoncé, and the genre’s Grammy committee rejected the song for its best country song and country solo performance awards.
Beyoncé nodded to that experience in the caption to her post revealing Act II’s album art, writing: “The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me. act ii is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”
Over the last decade, many Black performers and fashion designers have engaged with the history of Black cowboys, with fashion designers including Pyer Moss and Telfar releasing collections inspired by the aesthetic. Lil Nas X’s twangy debut smash hit Old Town Road sparked similar discourse.
For Royster, all of this must be considered when understanding Act II: “To me, this signals that Beyoncé is thinking about history, legacy, and also her basic bossness as a public figure.”

“I just randomly had this idea,” the 35-year-old country singer reportedly said while appearing on Apple Music Country’s ‘Today’s Country Radio with Kelleigh Bannen,’ last week. “Because it was a big, wide open green space, and I was like, ‘What if I was just really small?’ Like, in the feal position, sort of into the earth, and it’s just sort of vulnerable and almost like a rebirth, I guess.”

The New York Mandolin Orchestra turns 100 next month, marking a century of bringing people together over their shared love of making music and fostering community.
“I think this is an extraordinary moment for us as an organization,” says Carol Bloom, 80, a retired teacher and guidance counselor from the Upper West Side who plays second mandolin in the orchestra.
The plucky group, made up of a mix of professional and amateur musicians, gather to rehearse once a week and hone their craft while practicing songs like “Ukrainian Melody,” “Bulgar,” and “Flatbush Waltz.”
Founded in 1924, and originally called the New York Freiheit Mandolin Orchestra, after its affiliation with the Jewish community newspaper Freiheit , the NY Mandolin Orchestra’s founding members were Eastern European immigrants who had carefully toted their instruments on their journeys to the New World.
“The orchestra really had a very strong influence from Eastern European immigrants, and largely a Jewish influence, too,” said Judith Fallat, 67, a full-time attorney from Morris Plains, NJ and the group’s concertmaster.
“If you think back to 100 years, these people are working in factories,” said Fallat, who joined the orchestra in 1997. “They get off work and blow off steam, and gather and play the music of their homelands and dance and be together. That’s what they would do at night.”
Today the orchestra’s membership runs the gamut of backgrounds, with members from all five boroughs of New York, as well as Nassau, Orange, Duchess and Rockland Counties, and all over New Jersey.
Its members include composers, lawyers and doctors, as well as school teachers and painters — nearly all at or near retirement age.
In the 1920s, the Big Apple boasted numerous mandolin orchestras, many affiliated with labor unions, including the International Ladies Garment Workers Union Orchestra, the International Workers Order Mandolin Orchestra and the Jewish Peoples’ Fraternal Order Orchestra.
By the 1980s, membership was skewing older, and musicians from disbanded groups began joining the ranks of the New York Mandolin Orchestra.
Around that same time, the group expanded its oeuvre to include genres like bluegrass, jazz, show tunes, folk and world music.
Over the decades, most of its peers dwindled, but the NY Mandolin Orchestra has stood strong, and is today one of the oldest continuously performing mandolin orchestras in the country.
“Like any organism, it’s gone through its changes. It’s certainly not what it was 100 years ago. It’s evolved over the years,” said Bloom, who joined the group nearly a decade ago.
“But somehow it’s still the orchestra, the New York Mandolin Orchestra.”
Throughout its 100 years in existence, the orchestra only shut down performances once. As a result of the pandemic. live rehearsals were suspended through the fall of 2021.
At any other time, you could set your watch by the group’s Tuesday night rehearsals.
The comfort of that consistency is one thing that has kept Harvey Weitzner, 70, of Mahwah NJ coming back week after week since 1986, making him the group’s longest-standing member.
“We rehearse on Tuesday nights, and it means I forget all the aggravation and all the stress,” the retired second-generation music store owner told The Post.
“It’s such a supportive group of people. Great people. A lot of people in the orchestra were my parents’ generation and older. One of our ex-members is over 100 years old.”
Orchestra member Michael Resnick, 88, a Brooklyn-born retired orthopedic surgeon who now lives in Suffern, NY, joined the group in 2012 after a chance meeting with Weitzner in his music store.
He admits to being completely self-taught, but has mandolin in his blood — his father learning to play mandolin on the streets of Brooklyn, he said.
Resnick has three kids, six grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Recently, his son Andrew, 59, joined the orchestra.
“It’s a great thrill to play with him,” Resnick beamed.
“I feel I owe the orchestra a great debt because I didn’t have a musical education. I learned that being able to play with other people is one of the best things in life,” he said, leaning on his cane.
“I think it’s an incredible thing that an organization can last 100 years. I think that the people in it were very, very devoted.”
The orchestra’s conductor is Dr. Yuanlin Chen, 67, a renowned composer from Kew Gardens Hills whose works have been performed at major concerts around the world.
He described the group as “wonderful” and hailed their stylistic evolution over its 100-year history.
“I enjoy it. It’s very exciting working with the musicians.”
The New York Mandolin Orchestra is hosting a Centennial Celebration Concert on Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Holy Trinity, 316 East 88th St.
Doors open at 1:30 p.m., and the orchestra will perform from 2 to 4 p.m. with one intermission. Admission is free.
