The stage was impressive as were the band. Sounding like they had just released their first album, Europe rocked through the entire concert. No support act and a show so awesome it needed an intermission, we rocked, sang and danced with Joe and the boys through all the old hits and the best of the new. The energy of the guys was astounding, each having their own moment to shine. The drum solo was a stand out. It was a well crafted set list, with the big anthems and softer ballads, blended to remind us that Europe has been part of the soundtrack of our lives. A concert that left us grinning and singing on the night and for days afterwards.

always a pleasure to see this guys in action! as a very old fan form the 80's, i loved the band from the beginning...so much fun and some tears too...very emocional and the set list was amazing too. tunes from every period of their career, from the oldest to new ones, of course focusing on the last álbum, War Of Kings. the sound of the venue was amazing, with a stage lights doing a very special show too.

THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE

Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.

Destination Must-Sees

seville

The capital and largest city of Andalusian Spain is Seville. Approximately 2,200 years old, the early origins of the city date back to the year 712. It is situated along the Guadalquivir River, which splits the city into two halves. Seville is famous for being the birthplace of the Flamenco dance. It is also known for its culture, monuments, traditions and artistic heritage.

costa del sol

The Costa del Sol:

This “Sunny Coast” is the southernmost part of Spain, stretching along the Mediterranean Sea. Its major province is Málaga, the home of Picasso. To the far west part of the Costa del Sol is the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. The sunny provinces of the Costa del Sol are known for their golden sandy beaches, fresh Mediterranean seafood and relaxing atmosphere.

Europe ms1

Irish countryside:

Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.

Europe ms2

Ancient cities of Italy:

Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.

Destination Must-Dos

Spain md2

La Sagrada Familia:

Meaning the Holy Family, this modern structure is known as the church of the people, built by the people, with the money of the people. While it is not the cathedral of Barcelona, it is widely known due to its unique architecture and phenomenal design initiated by architect Antoni Gaudí. Work on the exploratory church began in 1882 and continues to this day, but with modern technology and the rising number of visitors and donations, the church’s completion date has rapidly become closer. The facades of the church are breathtaking in their intricate and artistic details, all of which were inspired by Gaudí.

Palace of Versailles France2022

The Palace of Versailles

The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.

Europe md2

Drift down a canal:

While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.

Spain md4

This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

Magnificent landscapes combined with the country’s charming traditions and customs offer new experiences unlike anywhere else in the world. Famous for bullfighting, Spain allows you to grab life by the horns and dive into adventure. Whether it’s the eye-catching architecture of Madrid, the bold Spanish wines, or the shimmering Costa del Sol, this country remains a delight to the senses. Once you experience Spain, you’ll never want to leave and when you do, you’ll always be craving more.

A gem of the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is a paradise. On the coasts, sun-soaked beaches meet breathtaking hillside towns all down the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. In the cities, ancient structures rise up shoulder-to-shoulder with modern living. Everywhere you turn, you can find mouth-watering food paired with delicious local wines, medieval architecture paired with Moorish artistic influence, and friendly locals paired with charming attitudes. No matter what you seek, when you go, where you look, or how long you stay, Portugal offers something for every traveler.

Whether it’s old-world traditions and wonderful culture, cuisine, history, fashion or natural beauty, Italy is special to many people for different reasons. Few other countries boast so many legendary cities. There are also many charming hill towns and coastal villages that showcase Italy’s amazing natural beauty. From the big cities to the small towns, there is always something exciting to see in Italy. With so many reasons to visit, the rest is up to you!

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. Rolling hills and scenic valleys lined with the fruit of the gods; seaside towns, along sandy beaches with views you just might be sharing with royalty; or maybe snowcapped mountain ranges providing some of the best skiing in the world and an adrenaline rush to match is what you seek. Whatever you decide, France easily makes you feel as if you have stepped out of reality and into the art you learned about and loved since you were a child.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.

Switzerland

Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When traveling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favorites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavors of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

The 44 Most Anticipated Tours of 2024: Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, and More

By Pitchfork

Mitski Burna Boy Olivia Rodrigo and more

It’s looking like a busy year for some of the world’s biggest touring artists, with packed schedules from Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Bad Bunny, Foo Fighters, the Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day, and many more. A few touring institutions, meanwhile, are just wrapping up, from Adele’s time in Las Vegas to Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency and Bob Dylan’s seemingly never-ending Rough and Rowdy Ways trek. Some things, however, just never seem to change: You can expect the Ty Segalls and King Gizzards of the world to feature on these roundups till kingdom come, with reliable indie-rock staples like Destroyer, Wednesday, and Alvvays still out in force fighting for the cause, too.

After a residency that has spanned the best part of a year and brought hundreds of thousands of Adele fans to Las Vegas, the Tottenham superstar is closing the run with dates from January through June. “This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have,” she said in the announcement. “It’s just made me realize how much I really enjoy being on stage, that I’m bloody good at it and that it is 100% where I belong! So let’s go one last time before I turn into a showgirl forever!” –Jazz Monroe

The riotous Welsh rock band Mclusky, who last toured North America in 2004, were primed for a cross-Atlantic comeback run until disaster struck: bandleader Andrew “Falco” Falkous found himself working through a debilitating bout of tinnitus and other inner-ear problems. Tool haven’t released new music since 2019’s Fear Inoculum , but they’ve remained busy on the road. Following headlining and festival dates last year, the band has stadium and arena shows in January and February. Wondering what wild outfit Maynard James Keenan will wear this time? Will it be a blonde wig, red lipstick, and prosthetic breasts? A leather jumpsuit and a wild mohawk? Might as well go to one of these shows and find out. –Evan Minsker and Matthew Ismael Ruiz

One can never be sure exactly what to expect from a Ty Segall show, especially here in the post–Freedom Band era. His sets can be electric and wild, acoustic and intimate, maybe a bit psychedelic. With his 2024 dates behind the new album Three Bells , you can likely expect him to lean into his prog rock impulses. After some West Coast dates in February, he’s heading across North America in April and May. –Evan Minsker

During a Super Bowl musically dominated by the long-awaited return of Rihanna, U2 shared a commercial featuring a baby’s face in an orb. That mystical child heralded the band’s Las Vegas shows, where they’ve performed their 1991 album, Achtung Baby , from September into the first months of 2024. U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at the Sphere marked the opening of the MSG Sphere at the Venetian, which seats 17,500. The best trip ever. Very well paced and you literally get to see everything.
Inconsistency. You where not upto date with travel directions & changes. You did not deduct gratuities as indicated. I think it best to go direct with the company & not a 3rd party. This way one gets a better idea of the extra costs involved. BUT thank you for enlightenment & I did have a great trip.

Our tour was everything we expected and more. Roma our tour guide was knowledgeable and demonstrated a true passion for the history of the places we visited and was always happy with a tip or recommendation to make our experience that much better. Ivo our driver for all but the last day of the tour was first class, a very good driver.

Hotels had dead cockroaches lying around, guide was sweet but not experienced at creating a cohesive group feel. On top of which, the credit that GAdventures gave me to compensate for the mediocrity of the trip expired in 6 months - even the airlines give you a year! And some trips have no option to have a private room (yes, I';m willing to pay extra for that).
Great attention to detail. Enthusiast tour leader. Loved the adventure!

Our tour guide Cem is an attentive, energetic young man, very helpful and informative, detail oriented, well manner - shows respect to his coworkers and customers, a good representative for the tour industry.
Different experience from another trip we had last year. If you want to have a fully guided tour with same people, tour guide and bus driver the whole trip, "this is not it". Here they change tour guides, drivers, buses and people through different cities so is a little hard to catch up sometimes. You got to keep up and pay attention to instructions cause if u get lost or miss a bus, you are on your own to return to the hotel or next destination by bus, train or taxi. Also be aware that they tour you for a while and then you got free time til a bus picks you up at night. If you decide to return to the hotel earlier you got to pay for your own transportation. Is was great cause you meet people from all over the world, and the places, the views you see are priceless. Hotels include breakfast only. You pay for lunches, meals and other expenses . They only include 1 lunch. Overall it was very nice, and we fell in love with Spain and Portugal, their food and people.

A tour for the traveller rather than tourist. A lot of wasted time waiting for local guide sometimes 2hours. No advice on places to see, etc. Quality of hotels satisfactory as they varied such a lot and I like simple. Tour itinerary was very good and enjoyed the experience.
The highlights for me were Musala Peak, Rila Lakes, and Vihren peak. Our guide, Boryana, was positive, good at organising and planning everything and took care of our safety, she had an amazing attention to detail. The accommodationn was good, all very welcoming places, friendly staff and homely set up. I would have loved more detailed and accurate day to day itinerary, and to be handed a hard copy version in person when arriving. I had a very unpleasant exprience with the arrival transfer with the taxi - the driver was rude and I felt unsafe travelling at such speedd. Boryans's driving on the other hand was excellent, she was always keeping us informed about the journey ahead and provided local kowledge en route, always offering comfort brakes.

We had an excellent experience. Everything was well organized. The tour company was very receptive to any questions. The guide was very knowledgeable. A couple of the hotels were just OK, but in general, they were just up to our standards. I will say that having an electric car was somehow stressful as our guide could not always find a place to recharge the car at night. He had to go back several times and wait for hours. It made his days very long as it had already been our driver and our guide all day.
We had a very good time during this tour! We truly recommend taking this one or any other tour with this company, it’s very well organized, informative and safe!

Contiki

Best trip with awesome people!
Our tour manager Beck was amazing and has gone above and beyond her duties to make sure everyone was taken cared of and is having a very good experience! In the same way, our driver Tiago was great! The itineraries were very packed, as expected but Beck and Tiago have been amazing at making sure we still get the best experiences despite the very little time. Overall, joining this trip will allow you to see a lot of beautiful European places, have amazing photographs, and have good experiences without putting a huge dent in your wallet. With all these amazing things that I have to say, I have to put warnings here for people for them to know whether or not this is the right trip for them. First, this is a budget trip. Therefore, please do not expect the accommodations to be fantastic. The accommodations were functional but not with any wow factor. Next, Contiki caters to a predominantly to young travelers. If you are not heavy on partying, you may want to reconsider! Nobody forces you to party and tour managers will in fact arranged ways to get you back to the accommodations if you decide not to join nightly scheduled parties. However, even a lot of included and add-on meals involves a lot of heavy alcohol drinking. A lot of included and add-on meals are only okay at best. Do not expect amazing gourmet experience but do expect unlimited alcohol servings! Lastly, Contiki is an Australian company. Therefore, expect experiences to be catered to Australian culture. If you are an American or any nationality who values your quality personal space and personal time, this will not be the right trip for you!

The best trip in my life!
I absolutely loved the Real Britain tour by Trafalgar! Our guide Paul was very friendly and knowledgeable and had a great sense of humour which made our time so enjoyable! Our driver Ian was also very good! I would definitely recommend this tour for anyone who wants a well-rounded taste of England! I was very happy to see a bit of Scotland as well! The only thing I would ask is that Tour Radar would put more specific details about the tour on their site as it appears on Trafalgar’s website. I would have appreciated the list of the names of the hotels, optional experiences, and which particular meals were included etc. Having finished the tour, I know better where I would like to stay longer the next time I’m in England! I got to see so much amazing scenery in the countryside as we travelled and sights at the destinations we stopped. It was truly a wonderful and unforgettable experience!

I very much enjoyed seeing the beautiful Croatian coastline. Our tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and seemed to have a real love for his country. My main criticism was that there were frequent incidents where things such as guides in the different areas were not included in the tour, so it felt like we were often paying for services that I would have thought would be part of the overall tour. I would have preferred to have paid more money up front than to have had the frequent requests for additional money.
The six of us enjoyed an excellent stay in the multicity tour and would gladly tour again with this company.

There was the largest December snow in 90 years just before we a. It made getting there a little difficult but well worth it! Our carriage ride was magical. Greg made it even more special. He was so attentive to everyone’s needs and abilities. Never rushing anyone. Not to mention his surprises every time we got back on the bus. Starting each day with “Louie Armstrongs it’s a wonderful world. We all would sing along. We became friends instantly and felt like family within just a few days together. I highly recommend Greg as a tour guide he really added to the experience. The atmosphere he created by showing us all how much he truly cared for each of us. He is an exceptional person and I for one feel that the trip would have not been the same without him!!!!!
Great variety of markets. Well organised and Greg was very helpful when I had a bit of a mobility issue.

Shedding light on energy in europe - 2024 edition, shedding light on energy in europe, energy-2024-introduction.

Lighting, heating, moving, producing: energy is vital for our day-to-day life.

Without energy, people and businesses cannot function. Turning on our computers or starting our cars are actions that we take for granted, yet they represent the final stage of a complex process.

This publication helps to make the complex topic of energy more understandable. It replies to the needs of those who are not familiar with the energy sector as well as more experienced users.

Energy-2024-ch-section-energy-sources, energy sources.

This section focuses on the different energy sources available in the EU, the energy produced in the EU as well as the energy imported.

energy-2024-ch-energy-sources

Energy sources

43% of energy produced in the EU in 2022 came from renewables

energy-2024-ch2-energy-mix

The energy available in the European Union (EU) comes from energy produced in the EU and from energy imported from third countries. Therefore, in order to get a good overview of the total energy available in the EU, energy production should always be put in context with imports.

In 2022, the EU produced around 37% of its own energy, while 63% was imported.

Petroleum products have the largest share in the EU energy mix

In 2022, the energy mix in the EU, meaning the range of energy sources available, mainly consisted of five different sources: crude oil and petroleum products (37%), natural gas (21%), renewable energy (18%), solid fossil fuels (13%) and nuclear energy (11%).

The shares of the different energy sources in the gross available energy vary considerably between EU countries. In 2022, the share of petroleum products in available energy was highest in Cyprus (87%), Malta (86%) and Luxembourg (61%), while natural gas was a significant energy source in Italy (37%), Hungary (31%), Ireland and the Netherlands (both 30%). Renewables had the largest share in Sweden (50%) and Latvia (42%), while nuclear energy accounted for 35% of energy available in France and 26% in Sweden. The share of solid fossil fuels was highest in Estonia (58%) and Poland (41%).

energy-2024-ch3-EU-energy-production

Eu energy production.

The  production of energy in the EU is spread across a range of different energy sources: solid fuels , natural gas, crude oil, nuclear energy and renewable energy (such as hydro, wind and solar energy).

Renewable energies account for the highest share in energy production

Renewable energy (43% of total EU energy production) was the largest contributing source to energy production in the EU in 2022. Nuclear energy (28%) was the second largest source, followed by solid fuels (19%), natural gas (6%) and crude oil (3%).

However, the production of energy is very different from one EU country to another. In 2022, renewable energy was the exclusive source of energy production in Malta (in other words, this country did not produce any other type of energy) and represented at least half in 15 other EU countries, with shares of of 99.6% in Latvia, 98% in Portugal and 96% in Cyprus. The significance of nuclear energy was particularly high in France (71% of total national energy production), Belgium (67%) and Slovakia (61%). Solid fuels were the main source of energy produced in Poland (70%), Estonia (59%), Czechia (46%) and Bulgaria (45%). Natural gas had the largest share in the Netherlands (53%), Ireland (37%) and Romania (34%), while the share of crude oil was largest in Denmark (33%).

energy-2024-ch4-energy-imports-dependency

Energy imports and imports dependency.

For its own consumption, the EU also needs energy that is imported from third countries. In 2022, the main imported energy product category was oil and petroleum products (including crude oil, which is the main component), accounting for 63% of energy imports into the EU, followed by natural gas (26%) and solid fossil fuels (7%).

Different patterns among EU countries

In 2022, in EU countries' energy imports, the highest shares of oil and petroleum products were in Cyprus (94%) and Malta (87%), of natural gas in Italy and Hungary (both 39%), and of solid fossil fuels in Poland (18%), Slovakia and Czechia (both 14%).

You can discover the main trading partners of your country and see the different trade flows using the interactive visualisation tool on energy trade.

Russia main EU supplier of oil and petroleum products, natural gas and solid fossil fuels in 2022

In 2022, more than half of the extra-EU oil and petroleum imports came from five origins: Russia (21%), the United States (11%), Norway (10%), Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom (both 7%). A similar analysis shows that 64% of the EU's imports of natural gas came from Russia (23%), Norway (17%), the United States (14%) and Algeria (11%), while the biggest solid fossil fuel (mostly coal) imports originated from Russia (23%), followed by the United States (18%), Australia (16%), South Africa (14%) and Colombia (13%).

Due to the EU sanctions imposed as a consequence of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine since 2022, this situation is subject to change. The latest developments can be monitored via Eurostat’s monthly data .

EU energy imports dependency rate was 63% in 2022

The  energy imports dependency rate shows the extent to which an economy relies upon imports in order to meet its energy needs. It is measured by the share of net imports (imports minus exports) in gross inland energy consumption (meaning the sum of energy produced and net imports).

In the EU in 2022, the energy imports dependency rate was equal to 63%, which means that 63% of the EU’s energy needs were met by net imports. However, the dependency rate varied across the EU countries, ranging from 99% in Malta, 92% in Cyprus, and 91% in Luxembourg to 6% in Estonia.

31% of energy in the EU in 2022 was consumed by the transport sector

energy-2024-ch5-types-energy-consumed

Types of energy consumed.

In 2022, out of the  total energy available in the EU, 67% was consumed by end users (final energy consumption), for example EU citizens, industry and transport. The remaining 33% was mainly lost during electricity generation and distribution, used to support energy production processes, or consumed in non-energy uses (like asphalt or bitumen).

Petroleum products are the most consumed

In the EU in 2022, petroleum products (such as heating oil, petrol, diesel fuel) represented 37% of final energy consumption, followed by electricity (23%), natural and manufactured gas (21%), direct use of renewables (not transformed into electricity, for example wood, solar thermal, geothermal or biogas for space heating or hot water production; 12%), derived heat (such as district heating; 5%) and solid fossil fuels (mostly coal; 2%). The real consumption of renewable energy (23%) was higher than the direct use (12%), shown in the visualisation underneath, because other renewable sources, such as hydropower, wind power and solar photovoltaic, are included in electricity in the visualisation.

Within the EU countries, the final energy consumption pattern varied considerably in 2022. Petroleum products made up 55% of final energy consumption in Cyprus, Luxembourg and Malta. Electricity accounted for 39% in Malta and 34% in Sweden, while gas made up 36% in the Netherlands and 29% in Slovakia, Hungary and Italy. Direct use of renewable energies accounted for 29% of final energy consumption in Sweden and 28% in Finland.

The transport sector accounted for 31% of final energy consumption in the EU

How big shares had the different sectors of the economy in final energy consumption in the EU in 2022? The transport sector (31% of final energy consumption in rail, road, domestic aviation and inland shipping) had the highest share, followed by energy consumed by private households in citizens’ dwellings (27%), industry (25%), commercial and public services (13%), and agriculture, forestry and fishing (3%).

From production to final consumption

To properly interpret energy statistics, it is necessary to distinguish between primary and secondary energy products. A primary energy product is extracted or captured directly from natural resources, such as crude oil, firewood, natural gas or coal. This process is called primary production. Secondary energy products (such as electricity or motor gasoline) are produced as a result of a transformation process, either from a primary or from a different secondary energy product. Final consumers can use primary (for example natural gas for heating) or secondary energy products (such as motor gasoline to fill up their car tank).

energy-2024-ch8-energy-flows-2023

Energy flows.

An energy balance presents energy products (solid fuels, oil and petroleum products, gas, renewable energies, nuclear heat, electricity, etc.) of a country and their production, transformation and consumption by different types of economic actors (industry, transport, etc.). It allows you to see the total amount of energy extracted from the environment, traded, transformed and used by end-users.

Energy balances can be graphically represented through flow diagrams (also called Sankey diagrams), which allow users to visualise the interrelation of energy commodities in a more illustrative and intuitive way. These flows can be combined, split and traced through a series of events or processing stages.

The Sankey energy tool is based on a series of black nodes connected by flows. The nodes represent events or processes (imports, final energy consumption etc.) while the flows in different colours represent energy products. The width of each stream in the flow represents the amount of energy (fuel) in the flow.

energy-2024-ch9-greenhouse-gas-emissions

Greenhouse gas emissions.

Climate change is a threat to sustainable development. After years of extensive research, the scientific community agrees that man-made greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are the dominant cause of the Earth’s average temperature increases over the past more than 250 years (IPCC, 2014). Man-made GHG emissions are primarily a by-product of burning of fuels in power plants, cars or homes. Farming and waste decaying in landfills are also sources of GHG emissions.

EU greenhouse gas emissions declined steadily from 2010 until 2014, then rose slightly until 2017 and dropped again until 2020. In 2021 emissions increased by 5% compared to 2020.

In 2021, EU GHG emissions were 1.4 billion tonnes of CO 2 equivalent lower than in the refernce year 1990. This corresponds to a 28% reduction. The agreed target for 2030 is a 55% reduction and for 2050 a 100% reduction (net zero emissions). The Commission has proposed as intermediate target for 2040 a 90% reduction.

GHG emissions were below 1990 levels in 24 EU countries. The largest reductions, between 55% and 68%, were recorded in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania.

Shares of sectors in GHG emissions evolving

In 2021, fuel combustion by energy users (excluding transport) had the highest share (28%, was 30% in 1990) in total greenhouse gas emissions, ahead of the energy producing industries (25%, was 33% in 1990) and fuel combustion in transport (24%, was 15% in 1990).

energy-ch10-energy-efficiency-2023

Energy efficiency.

One of the priorities of the Energy Union strategy is to increase energy efficiency, mainly by cutting the EU’s overall energy use and managing energy in a more cost-effective way. Improving energy efficiency contributes to achieving energy savings, protecting the environment, mitigating climate change and reducing the EU's reliance on external suppliers of oil and gas.

In concrete terms, using less energy means reducing primary energy consumption , which is the total domestic energy demand, and final energy consumption , which is the energy actually consumed by end users, not including what the energy sector needs itself as well as transformation and distribution losses.

Energy consumption down in 2022

In 2022, primary energy consumption reached 1 257 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe). This is 1.7% higher than in 2020, when consumption reached its lowest level due to the impact of the pandemic, but still the second-lowest level since 1990 (the first year for which data are available). The 2022 level is 11.4% away from the EU 2030 target (no more than 1 128 Mtoe primary energy consumption).

Also the final energy consumption decreased in 2022 (to 940 Mtoe, -2.8% compared with 2021), to the lowest level after 2014, except the year 2020, which was impacted by the pandemic. The 2022 level is 11.2% away from the 2030 target (no more than 846 Mtoe).

Renewable energy, energy-2024-ch11-renewable-energy-video-2023, from wind to watts, energy-2024-ch11-renewable-energy, steady growth in the share of renewables in energy consumption.

The share of renewables in energy consumption in the EU was 9.6% in 2004, 16.7% in 2013 and 23.0% in 2022. The only year with a decrease was 2021, when the lifting of the restrictions linked to the pandemic played a role for the decrease. The current EU target is to reach 32% renewables by 2030.

Sweden had by far the highest share of renewables in energy consumption (66.0%) in 2022, ahead of Finland (47.9%) and Latvia (43.3%). The lowest proportions of renewables were recorded in Ireland (13.1%), Malta (13.4%) and Belgium (13.8%). Differences stem partly from variations in the endowment with natural resources, mostly in the potential for building hydropower plants and in the availability of biomass.

Eu policies.

The  European Green Deal  is the ambitious EU climate policy that aims for Europe to become the first climate neutral continent by 2050.

In particular, reaching this target will require action by all sectors of our economy, including investing in environmentally-friendly technologies, decarbonising the energy sector, ensuring buildings are more energy efficient or rolling out cleaner forms of private and public transport.

energy-2024-eu-policies-video

Energy-2024-eu-policies-2023-part2.

The energy union  is the main energy policy instrument to deliver the transformations required to decarbonise our energy system. The goal of the Energy Union is to give EU consumers – households and businesses – secure, sustainable, competitive and affordable energy.

In order to ensure that policies and measures at various levels are coherent, complementary and sufficiently ambitious, the Energy Union adopted a strong governance mechanism, based on integrated national energy and climate plans.

Using reliable high quality data to monitor the policy targets under the European Green Deal and the Energy Union packages, will enhance the credibility of EU energy policy.

The  annual state of the energy union report monitors progress made to bring about the transition to a low-carbon, secure and competitive economy. It also highlights the issues where further attention is needed.

energy-2024-glossary

Open bunkers.

Bunkers include all dutiable petroleum products loaded aboard a vessel for consumption by that vessel. International maritime bunkers describe the quantities of fuel oil delivered to ships of all flags that are engaged in international navigation. It is the fuel used to power these ships. International navigation may take place at sea, on inland lakes and waterways, and in coastal waters. International maritime bunkers do not include fuel oil consumption by:

  • ships engaged in domestic navigation (whether a vessel is engaged in domestic or international navigation is determined only by the ship's port of departure and port of arrival — not by the flag or nationality of the ship)
  • fishing vessels
  • military forces.

Open Combined heat and power

Combined heat and power describes the simultaneous production of both useful heat (that can be used, for example, in industrial processes or city heating schemes) and electricity in a single process or unit.

Open Derived heat

Derived heat is used for warming spaces and for industrial processes and is obtained by burning combustible fuels like coal, natural gas, oil, renewables (biofuels) and wastes, or also by transforming electricity to heat in electric boilers or heat pumps.

Open District heating

City heating, also known as district heating, is the distribution of heat through a network to one or several buildings using hot water or steam produced centrally, often from co-generation plants, from waste heat from industry, or from dedicated heating systems.

Open Electricity

Electricity denotes the set of physical phenomena related to electrical charges. It allows to store and transfer energy, or to consume it through electrical appliances. It has a very wide range of applications in almost all kinds of human activities ranging from industrial production, household use, agriculture or commerce and it is normally used for running machines, lighting and heating.

Open Energy imports dependency rate

The energy imports dependency rate shows the proportion of energy that an economy must import. It is defined as net energy imports (imports minus exports) divided by gross inland energy consumption plus fuel supplied to international maritime bunkers, expressed as a percentage. A negative dependency rate indicates a net exporter of energy while a dependency rate in excess of 100 % indicates that energy products have been stocked.

Open Energy intensity

Energy intensity measures the energy consumption of an economy and its energy efficiency. It is the ratio between gross inland consumption of energy and gross domestic product (GDP). Gross inland consumption of energy is calculated as the sum of gross inland consumption of five energy types: coal, electricity, oil, natural gas and renewable energy sources. The GDP figures are taken at constant prices to avoid the impact of inflation. Since gross inland consumption is measured in kilograms of oil equivalent and GDP in EUR 1 000, this ratio is measured in kgoe per EUR 1 000.

Open Energy end user categories

Energy end user categories include private households, agriculture, industry, road transport, air transport (aviation), other transport (rail, inland navigation) and services.

Open Final energy consumption

Final energy consumption is the total energy consumed by end users, such as households, industry and agriculture. It is the energy which reaches the final consumer's door and excludes that which is used by the energy sector itself. Final energy consumption excludes energy used by the energy sector, including for deliveries, and transformation. It also excludes fuel transformed in the electrical power stations of industrial auto-producers and coke transformed into blast-furnace gas where this is not part of overall industrial consumption but of the transformation sector. Final energy consumption in 'households, services, etc.' covers quantities consumed by private households, commerce, public administration, services, agriculture and fisheries.

Open Fossil fuel

Fossil fuel is a generic term for non-renewable natural energy sources such as coal, natural gas and oil that were formed from plants and animals (biomass) that existed in the geological past (for example, hundreds of millions of years ago). Fossil fuels are carbon-based and currently supply most human energy requirements.

Gas includes mostly natural gas and derived gases.

Open Gigajoule

A gigajoule, abbreviated as GJ, is a unit of measurement of energy consumption: a gigajoule is equal to one thousand million joules.

Open Gigawatt-hours

Gigawatt-hour, abbreviated as GWh, is a unit of energy representing one billion (1 000 000 000) watt-hours and is equal to one million kilowatt-hours. Gigawatt-hours are often used as a measure of the output of large electricity power stations.

Open Greenhouse gas (GHG)

Greenhouse gases constitute a group of gases contributing to global warming and climate change. The Kyoto Protocol, an environmental agreement adopted by many of the parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in 1997 to curb global warming, covers six greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), methane (CH 4 ), nitrous oxide (N 2 O), and the so-called F-gases (hydrofluorocarbons and perfluorocarbons) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF 6 ). Converting them to carbon dioxide (or CO 2 ) equivalents makes it possible to compare them and to determine their individual and total contributions to global warming.

Open Gross available energy

Gross available energy means the overall supply of energy for all activities on the territory of the country. It includes energy needs for energy transformation (including generating electricity from combustible fuels), support operations of the energy sector itself, transmission and distribution losses, final energy consumption (industry, transport, households, services, agriculture, ...) and the use of fossil fuel products for non-energy purposes (e.g. in the chemical industry). It also includes fuel purchased within the country that is used elsewhere (e.g. international aviation, international maritime bunkers and, in the case of road transport “fuel tourism”).

Open Gross inland energy consumption

Gross inland energy consumption, sometimes abbreviated as gross inland consumption, is the total energy available of a country or region. It represents the quantity of energy necessary to satisfy inland consumption of the geographical entity under consideration. Gross inland energy consumption covers consumption by the energy sector itself; distribution and transformation losses; final energy consumption by end users; 'statistical differences' (not already captured in the figures on primary energy consumption and final energy consumption). Gross inland consumption does not include energy (fuel oil) provided to international maritime bunkers. It is calculated as primary production plus recovered products, net imports and variations of stocks minus maritime bunkers.

Open Gross electricity generation

Gross electricity generation or gross electricity production refers to the process of producing electrical energy. It is the total amount of electrical energy produced by transforming other forms of energy, for example nuclear or wind power. It is commonly expressed in gigawatt-hours (GWh). Total gross electricity generation covers gross electricity generation in all types of power plants. The gross electricity generation at plant level is defined as the electricity measured at the outlet of the main transformers, i.e. including the amount of electricity used in the plant auxiliaries and in the transformers.

Open Kilogram of oil equivalent

Kilogram(s) of oil equivalent, usually abbreviated as kgoe, is a normalized unit of energy. By convention, it is equivalent to the approximate amount of energy that can be extracted from one kilogram of crude oil (41 868 kilojoules = 41.868 megajoules). It is a standardized unit and may be used to compare the energy from different sources.

Open Kilowatt-hours

Kilowatt-hours, abbreviated as kWh, is a unit of energy representing one thousand watt-hours. Kilowatt-hours are often used as a unit when measuring domestic energy consumption.

Open Net electricity production

Net electricity production or net electricity generationtion is equal to gross electricity production (or generation) minus the consumption of power stations' auxiliary services.

Open Nuclear heat

Nuclear heat is the thermal energy produced in a nuclear power plant (nuclear energy). It is obtained from the nuclear fission of atoms, usually of uranium and plutonium.

Open Primary production of energy

Primary production of energy is any extraction of energy products in a useable form from natural sources. This occurs either when natural sources are exploited (for example, in coal mines, crude oil fields, hydro power plants) or in the fabrication of biofuels. Transforming energy from one form into another, such as electricity or heat generation in thermal power plants (where primary energy sources are burned), or coke production in coke ovens, is not primary production.

Open Renewable energy sources

Renewable energy sources, also called renewables, are energy sources that replenish (or renew) themselves naturally. Renewable energy sources include the following:

Ambient heat (heat pumps) : heat pumps that are driven by electricity or other supplementary energy, to extract (stored) energy from the air, the ground or the water and converts/transfers this into energy to be used elsewhere (e.g. to heat space via underfloor heating systems and/or water in domestic buildings).

Biomass (solid biofuels) : organic, non-fossil material of biological origin, which may be used for heat production or electricity generation. It includes: charcoal; wood and wood waste; black liquor, bagasse, animal waste and other vegetal materials and residuals.

Biogases : gases composed principally of methane and carbon dioxide produced by anaerobic fermentation of biomass, or by thermal processes. It includes: landfill gas; sewage sludge gas; other biogases from anaerobic digestion; bio gases from thermal processes.

Liquid biofuels are liquid fuels from a non-fossil biological origin and a renewable energy source, to be distinguished from fossil fuels. Biofuels can be split up into four categories: bio gasoline, biodiesel, bio jet kerosene (aviation fuel) and other liquid biofuels.

Renewable waste : portion of waste produced by households, industry, hospitals and the tertiary sector which is biological material collected by local authorities and incinerated at specific installations.

Hydropower : the electricity generated from the potential and kinetic energy of water in hydroelectric plants (the electricity generated in pumped storage plants is not included).

Geothermal energy : the energy available as heat from within the Earth’s crust, usually in the form of hot water or steam.

Wind energy : the kinetic energy of wind converted into electricity in wind turbines.

Solar energy : solar radiation exploited for solar heat (hot water) and electricity production.

Tide, wave, ocean : mechanical energy derived from tidal movement, wave motion or ocean current and exploited for electricity generation.

Open Share of renewable energy in energy consumption

Renewable energy sources cover solar thermal and photovoltaic energy, hydro (including tide, wave and ocean energy), wind, geothermal energy and all forms of biomass (including biological waste and liquid biofuels). The contribution of renewable energy from heat pumps is also covered for the Member States for which this information was reported. The renewable energy delivered to final consumers (industry, transport, households, services including public services, agriculture, forestry and fisheries) is the numerator of this indicator. The denominator, the gross final energy consumption of all energy sources, covers total energy delivered for energy purposes to final consumers as well as the transmission and distribution losses for electricity and heat. It should be noted that exports/imports of electricity are not considered as renewable energy unless a specific intergovernmental agreement has been signed. For more information: The national shares of energy from renewable sources in gross final consumption of energy are calculated according to specific calculation provisions of Directive 2009/28/EC .

Open Solid fuels

Solid fuels are fossil fuels covering various types of coals and solid products derived from coals. They consist of carbonised vegetable matter and usually have the physical appearance of a black or brown rock.

Open Tonne of oil equivalent

Tonne(s) of oil equivalent, abbreviated as toe, is a normalized unit of energy. By convention it is equivalent to the approximate amount of energy that can be extracted from one tonne of crude oil (41 868 megajoules = 41.868 gigajoules). It is a standardized unit and may be used to compare the energy from different sources.

Open Total fuels

Total fuels is the sum of all energy products and is composed of the following fuel families: Solid fuels (coal), total petroleum products (crude oil and derived petroleum products), gas, nuclear heat, derived heat, renewable energies, electricity and waste (non-renewable).

Forty health professionals, clinicians and journalists from France and Belgium attended a March 8 presentation and tour of Winship Cancer Institute at Emory Midtown. The group toured several key areas of Winship at Emory Midtown to learn about the unique and innovative ways that technology is utilized and leveraged throughout the 17-story cancer care center to provide patients the most effective cancer care and the best possible experience.

Affiliated with Catel, a French health tech innovation incubator, the group of visitors was comprised of physicians, pharmacists and chief information officers of hospitals and health systems overseas. Attendees enjoyed a panel presentation and Q&A session led by Ken Cardona, MD, FACS, associate chief medical officer of Winship at Emory Midtown.

“This tour helped us to bridge connections across the globe and have meaningful discussions around health care delivery models and technology innovations,” says Amy Breakstone, MPH, project administrator for Winship Cancer Institute. “I think Winship at Emory Midtown was selected and showcased for this event due to our innovative ‘Winship Way’ patient-centered care model, where we place patients at the center of care that is aligned with innovative cancer research and advanced technology to enhance the overall patient and provider experience.”

The facility’s Real-Time Locating System (RTLS) was one tech feature that intrigued the visitors.

“The French delegation was interested in seeing how we integrated the RTLS system into our daily operations to help with patient flow throughout the building. They were also interested in the KPIs we have developed to measure the system’s success,” says Breakstone.

Research informatics was another of the group’s key areas of interest, according to Ebonie Hardman, RN, MSN, MBA, assistant director of research informatics. She discussed Winship IT and Research Informatics Shared Resources offered to support researchers with the collection, storage, management and dissemination of data.

Some of the research technology tools offered include custom application development, data management services, population databases and consultation services.

“I also discussed our external partnerships with the American Cancer Society, Caris and Accenture: Microsoft GPT,” says Hardman. “They were most intrigued with our recent Accenture Large Language Model (LLM) Pilot. This project reduced the time of pathology report review for the purpose of case finding and classification for our cancer registry from 20 minutes to two minutes, with a 96% accuracy rate over seven different disease groups.”

She adds, “I shared that our technical and clinical knowledge parallels with new cutting-edge technology. Because of this, Winship can deliver top quality solutions swiftly and often ahead of other academic medical institutions.”

The visitors also toured the pharmacy to see how pharmacy technology has created further efficiencies that lead to improved patient satisfaction and a better experience for clinicians as well, according to Ryan Haumschild, PharmD, director of pharmacy for Winship Cancer Institute and Emory Healthcare.

“The group was impressed with the way we leverage technology for the sterile compounding of immunotherapies and targeted therapies to ensure the highest standards of safety and sterility for our patients,” Haumschild says. “We also were able to share the innovative ways we are delivering medications to the patient care communities utilizing our medication elevators and inventory management system.”

Attendees and presenters agree that the event was a success.

Breakstone says, “We received feedback from Dell and the French Catel delegation that they were excited to experience firsthand the patient-centric and technology-driven care at Winship and that the session and tour provided valuable insights into our transformative care delivery model at Winship Cancer Institute.”

“The collaboration at our recent event with  Catel ,  Emory Healthcare   and  Dell Technologies  exemplified the spirit of global innovation that 11TEN champions,” says Caleb Szubski, MBA, partner,   11TEN Innovation Partners , and executive lead for the   Emory Healthcare Innovation Hub . “Seeing leaders from France’s health care and IT sectors engage with the cutting-edge advances at Winship Cancer Institute was a testament to our shared commitment to advancing oncology care.”

Szubski adds, “We discussed the transformative power of data in health care decision-making, explored real-time tracking technologies that promise to enhance both patient and provider experiences and examined innovative pharmacy operations. The energy and ideas exchanged here will undoubtedly resonate through our ongoing work, spurring innovations that cross borders and boundaries.”

Other panelists included Zachary Bercu, MD, RPVI, interventional radiologist and program director for interventional radiology and independent residencies of Emory Healthcare, and Nicole Bansavage, DNP, RN, OCN, interim VP of oncology nursing, oncology specialty director for Winship Cancer Institute.

By exercising the Licensed Rights (defined below), You accept and agree to be bound by the terms and conditions of this Creative Commons Attribution-NoDerivatives 4.0 International Public License ("Public License"). To the extent this Public License may be interpreted as a contract, You are granted the Licensed Rights in consideration of Your acceptance of these terms and conditions, and the Licensor grants You such rights in consideration of benefits the Licensor receives from making the Licensed Material available under these terms and conditions.

Where a limitation of liability is not allowed in full or in part, this limitation may not apply to You.
  • The disclaimer of warranties and limitation of liability provided above shall be interpreted in a manner that, to the extent possible, most closely approximates an absolute disclaimer and waiver of all liability.

Section 6 – Term and Termination.

  • This Public License applies for the term of the Copyright and Similar Rights licensed here. However, if You fail to comply with this Public License, then Your rights under this Public License terminate automatically.

Where Your right to use the Licensed Material has terminated under Section   6(a) , it reinstates:

  • automatically as of the date the violation is cured, provided it is cured within 30 days of Your discovery of the violation; or
  • upon express reinstatement by the Licensor.
  • For the avoidance of doubt, the Licensor may also offer the Licensed Material under separate terms or conditions or stop distributing the Licensed Material at any time; however, doing so will not terminate this Public License.
  • Sections   1 ,   5 ,   6 ,   7 , and   8   survive termination of this Public License.

Section 7 – Other Terms and Conditions.

  • The Licensor shall not be bound by any additional or different terms or conditions communicated by You unless expressly agreed.
  • Any arrangements, understandings, or agreements regarding the Licensed Material not stated herein are separate from and independent of the terms and conditions of this Public License.

Section 8 – Interpretation.

  • For the avoidance of doubt, this Public License does not, and shall not be interpreted to, reduce, limit, restrict, or impose conditions on any use of the Licensed Material that could lawfully be made without permission under this Public License.
  • To the extent possible, if any provision of this Public License is deemed unenforceable, it shall be automatically reformed to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable. If the provision cannot be reformed, it shall be severed from this Public License without affecting the enforceability of the remaining terms and conditions.
  • No term or condition of this Public License will be waived and no failure to comply consented to unless expressly agreed to by the Licensor.
  • Nothing in this Public License constitutes or may be interpreted as a limitation upon, or waiver of, any privileges and immunities that apply to the Licensor or You, including from the legal processes of any jurisdiction or authority.
