ho chi minh city sightseeing tour

For most travellers, Ho Chi Minh City (affectionately still called Saigon by locals) is primarily the gateway to the Mekong Delta and nearby Cu Chi Tunnels — both of which we highly recommend — but there are also lots of fantastic things to explore within the city limits. From the heartbreaking War Remnants Museum to luxe shopping strips, gourmet restaurants to delectable street stalls, HCMC is a taste of all Vietnam has to offer. Get the local experience downtown or in the countryside on a Ho Chi Minh tour.

Vietnam Highlights in 10 Days - Super Deal Package

When I arrived in Vietnam I did not know what to expect, but at the end of this tour I can say that it was definitely worth it! My time was limited so I could only opt for the 10 days highlights tour, but you can see the main attractions people flock to this country for (e.g. Ha Long Bay and Hoi An). If you are more flexible, I'd recommend stay here for at least 2 weeks. Please buy a local SIM card and download the Grab app, those will definitely make your life easier.

Vietnam Express Northbound Tour

Vietnam Express Northbound

We have just returned from a 10 day tour of Vietnam. From the moment we booked this trip to saying our goodbyes on the last day everything was perfect. Our guide Thanh, a local, was superb. He had a great sense of humour and presented himself immaculately every day. He managed our group so well. We were exceptionally lucky as our entire group were lovely. Everyone respected meet up times, so we didn't waste time waiting for anyone and we all got on really well and we didn't have any moaners (people who love to complain about everything). All the accommodation was comfortable and clean, the overnight train is exactly as described, an experience I wouldn't have missed for the world. The day out on the bikes was brilliant fun, led by experienced riders. We felt safe all the time. Thanh took us to some wonderful restaurants, always going through the menu giving us ideas on what he recommended. If you're looking at whether to do the North to South or South to North trip, I'd suggest South to North. Ending the trip in Halong Bay on an over nightboat (again the accommodation on here was so comfortable) literally ended the whole trip on a high. It was excellent value for money and Intrepid's ethos of reducing plastic waste by giving us all our own bag to carry around instead of accepting goods we bought in plastic and having water available on all mini buses and in all hotel rooms so we could top up our own reusable cups was a wonderful touch. The whole experience will remain with us forever and we will definitely book another Intrepid adventure in the future.

Vietnam Highlights (10 Days)

Stef really knows his stuff and is a superb tour manager. He gave real insight into the history, culture and traditions - all while managing a variety of characters on the tour. There were some more in depth questions about social economicals & Vietnam’s history with other countries that he answered with conviction & quality I’d be more than happy to be on any tour group that he manages. Money well spent.

Surprising Vietnam In 11 Days

The tour was very well organised and very punctual. All the tour guides arrived on time and pick-up and drop-off at airports was on time. We picked 3-star hotels at Hanoi, Hoi An and 4-star hotel at HCMC. All hotels were of good quality. The lunches provided during tours were excellent. Highly recommend this tour.

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

Tour was very well organised from start to finish. Guides were all very good especially Mr Bau in SGN and Mr Bobby in HAN. The only glitch I found was that the free sewing of a shirt in Hoi An was not clearly explained before arrival in Hoi An. Ha Long Bay very overrated - we anchored for the night with about 30 other boats nearby. I will definitely go back to Vietnam again.

A very busy whistle stop tour of Vietnam. You visit HCMC Hoi An and Hanoi. Accommodate for a comfort style tour needs to be improved. Our tour leader was informative knowledgeable and good fun. If you have the time I’d probably advise you to take a longer trip especially Hoi An as we all loved it.

Cycling Mekong Delta in Vietnam 5 Days Tour

Cycling Mekong Delta in Vietnam 5 Days

It was a great experience to discover Vietnam via bike. Leo and Dang were really kind. Our guide Leo provided a lot of background information and adopted stops and breaks according to our needs. The bikes were good and everything worked out very well. The local food was delicious. They always found a vegetarian dish as well. Be aware that dinner is only included on 2 days. But since it is not too expensive to find something and it is also nice to the discover the surrounding of the hotel, it was ok. The hotels were really nice and above standard. The tour was not too exhausting. We extended the distance on the last day. Looking back we should have done this on the other days as well, to reduce the bus transfer times.

Reviews of Vietnam Tours from Ho Chi Minh City

It was a wonderful experience. One suggestion Hanoi exploration should be before Ho Chi Minh. The hotel in Hanoi was not good
Absolutely incredible. Best holiday I’ve done in my life. Tried One Life and Contiki (for other places) and not as good. The tour was at just the right place and a huge benefit was that because we used 3 sleeper trains, we could go to sleep in one location and wake up in another without waisting transport time, so we had lots of time to
The itinerary was well-chosen, and the guide was experienced and helpful. I had a general impression of the country, with its highlights . A positive experience overall.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is a busy, sprawling metropolis filled with honking scooters, pungent aromas and enthralling scenes. The staggering city – Vietnam’s largest with a population of 9 million people – is a mix of modern high-rises, classic architecture and historic enclaves. Ho Chi Minh City attractions are scattered around the chaotic city, but many of the top HCMC sights are centrally located and easy to see on our Self-Guided Ho Chi Minh City Tour.

Ho Chi Minh City Attractions in District 1

Planning what to see in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam can be a tremendous task. HCMC sights are strewn across 24 districts. However, Ho Chi Minh City sightseeing doesn’t have to be a challenge. Many of the top Ho Chi Minh City tourist attractions are in District 1 – and can be visited on foot.

District 1 is the heart of the bustling metropolis. Serving as the administrative and financial center, the district is home to numerous government entities, corporations and consulates. Tourist attractions are interspersed throughout District 1 – and we devised a DIY Ho Chi Minh Tour to the top sights.

Ho Chi Minh City Walking Tour

Our self-guided walk includes many Ho Chi Minh City highlights. For each HCMC sight, we include a brief description and additional information. To help fellow travelers, we have also included a free Ho Chi Minh City Map of sights – as well as a link to an online map and walking directions.

Tour Ho Chi Minh City: How Long?

Our Ho Chi Minh Sightseeing Tour is about 1.8 miles (3km) in length. Visitors should be able to complete the tour in less than 2 hours. However, if entering any of the Ho Chi Minh City attractions (like Independence Palace or Saigon Skydeck), it will take much longer. We recommend allowing an hour at each sight you enter.

Furthermore, throughout our HCMC Walking Tour, we offer recommendations for nearby sightseeing. Travelers could include all of these additional places to go in Ho Chi Minh City and create a full day tour.

Pro Tip : Be sure to check opening times prior to starting our HCMC Self-Guided Walking Tour. Some attractions are closed mid-day for lunch or do not open on certain days of the week.

Our Ho Chi Minh Walking Tour is the perfect way to get acquainted with the area, especially for first time visitors to HCMC.

#1 Ben Thanh Market HCMC

Narrow Isles with everything for sale, Ben Thanh Market, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Start your Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam tour at a HCMC landmark sight: Ben Thanh Market. A Ho Chi Minh City must-see, the busy market has origins that date to the 17th century. The market moved into the current building in 1912. Vendors sell a range of goods – from produce to street food to clothing and souvenirs.

Main Market Hall, Ben Thanh Market, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Nearby HCMC Museum: Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts. The HCMC Museum of Fine Arts is housed in a grandiose French-era building and contains a variety of art-forms, including sculptures, paintings and ceramics.

From the Ben Thanh Market, route your way east to the soaring Bitexco Financial Tower.

#2 Bitexco Financial Tower and Saigon Skydeck

Looking up at the Bitexco Financial Tower, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The 861-foot-tall Bitexco Financial Tower ranked as the tallest building in Vietnam when it was completed in 2010 (it is now the 5th tallest building in the country). The sleek skyscraper can be seen from nearly anywhere in HCMC and is designed to resemble a Lotus flower.

City View to the west from, Saigon Skydeck, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The 49th floor Saigon Skydeck is a major Ho Chi Minh City attraction. All though there is no outdoor space, visitors can enjoy 360-degree panoramic views through the floor-to-ceiling windows, along with beverages and snacks. Buy Your Skip-the-Line Ticket Now!

Cool Tiger Beer, Skydeck, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Nearby Museum: Ho Chi Minh Museum. Built in 1863 by the French as a Customs House, the Nha Rong Dragon House has been re-purposed as a museum dedicated to President Ho Chi Minh. Displays include his personal belongings, like clothing and his glasses.

From the Bitexco Building, walk east to the Song Sai Gon River.

#3 Saigon River

Saigon River, HCMC, Vietnam

The curving Saigon River has long played an important role as the area grew from a small fishing village into a significant seaport. The river is still used today as a hub to transport goods. Although traffic buzzes along the busy boulevard that runs parallel to it, the riverside is a place to go in Ho Chi Minh City to escape the crowds.

View of the Saigon River to the north from Saigon Skydeck, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Many historic French colonial buildings line the waterfront – such as the 1887 Customs Building and the opulent Majestic Hotel. A little further north – at the Me Linh roundabout – there is a statue dedicated to Tran Hung Dao (a national hero of the 13th century) and the Bach Dang Harbor, where Saigon Riverboat tours depart.

Onboard Saigon Watertaxi, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Walk north along the riverside a short distance, then retrace your steps to Nguyen Hue Street.

#4 Nguyen Hue Walking Street

The Café Apartments, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Running a half-mile from the Saigon River to the Ho Chi Minh City Hall Building, Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street is one of the most famous boulevards in the city. Lined with boutique shops, chic cafes and high-end retailers, the street is a popular place to take a stroll both day and night.

The Café Apartments

One of the most interesting buildings along the boulevard is the Café Apartments at #42. The 1960s block apartment building has housed US military officers, shipyard workers and, now, cafes. Each café has its own theme and vibe, so visitors can explore until they find the perfect spot for a coffee with a view.

Walk northwest to Le Loi Street – about a block before the street ends at the HCMC City Hall building. Turn right (northeast) and walk one block to the Opera House.

#5 HCMC Opera House (Municipal Theater)

Opera House, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Built in 1897, the Opera House is one of the best sights in Ho Chi Minh City from the French colonial period. The 500-seat theater is still used for performances today. Flanking the Opera House are two famous HCMC hotels.

The Caravelle Hotel, on the south, opened in 1959. In addition to once housing the Australian and New Zealand Embassies – as well as top news outlets – the hotel was frequented by journalists covering the Vietnam War. The Hotel Continental, on the north side of the Opera House, was built in 1880 as a luxury hotel and was a popular social and political gather spot during the French Colonial era.

Retrace your steps on Le Loi Street back to Nguyen Hue Street. Walk to the center pedestrian zone and take in the next two sight: The Rex Hotel and the Ho Chi Minh Statue.

#6 Rex Hotel HCMC

Home Of The 5 O'Clock Follies, Rex Hotel, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The famous Rex Hotel was built in the 1920s as a car dealership, but was transformed in the 1960s into a hotel. American troops were the first guests of the Rex Hotel (but only while their camp was being established) and the rooftop bar became a favorite watering hole for US military officials. The Rex Hotel was used for daily press briefings by the US military command, which came to be better known as the Five O’Clock Follies.

#7 Ho Chi Minh Statue

Standing in the center of the wide pedestrian zone in front of City Hall is a 24-foot-tall statue of a waving President Ho Chi Minh. Placed on the square in 2015, it is the second Ho Chi Minh Statue to stand on the spot. The current statue was under refurbishment during our visit.

Walk behind the statue to the City Hall building.

#8 Ho Chi Minh City Hall

Classic Architecture, City Hall, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The exquisite and striking French colonial HCMC City Hall building was constructed in the early 1900s as a hotel – and was designed to resemble the Hotel de Ville in Paris . Adorned with columns and bas-reliefs, the landmark building now serves as the main office of government, Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee.

Pro Tip : At night, the building is bathed in lights, which makes it a particularly stunning sight.

Walk to the northeast end of City Hall to Dong Khoi Street (the same street that the Opera House is on) and turn left (northwest) and walk to the HCMC Cathedral.

#9 Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon

Notre Dame Cathedral, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Constructed in the late 1800s, the Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception (as it is formally called) is another remarkable vestige of the French Colonial times. The HCMC Notre Dame Cathedral was built entirely from French imported materials and, although it has undergone significant renovations, it has retained it original splendor. The double bell towers – each topped with a cross – rise to the height of 200 feet.

Pro Tip : Don’t miss the Our Lady of Peace statue that stands in the garden in front of the church. In 2005, people claim to have witnessed a tear fall down the statue’s right cheek and visitors still check today to see if the statue is crying.

Next to the Saigon Cathedral – to the east – is the yellow Ho Chi Minh City Post Office.

#10 Saigon Central Post Office

Central Post Office, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

The main HCMC Post Office is another French colonial era structure built in the late 1800s – and it is one of Ho Chi Minh City’s top attractions. The elegant and ornate building features a bright yellow façade with green shutters and the interior domed hall is reminiscent of an old European train station. The building still functions as the main post office – and they sell postcards on-site for visitors to mail home an inexpensive souvenir.

Walk to the pedestrian street on the northwest side of the post office.

#11 Nguyen Van Binh Book Street

People reading and drinking coffee on Book Street, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

A unique HCMC street, Nguyen Van Binh is better known as Book Street. The short 150-meter-long lane is lined with bookshops, magazine kiosks, open-air cafes and literary memorabilia and statues.

Walk northwest to the back of the Cathedral and turn left (southwest) and walk to the front gates of Independence Palace.

#12 Independence Palace (Reunification Hall HCMC)

Independence Palace from the front, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

An iconic building with a storied past, Independence Palace is the most popular Ho Chi Minh City attraction. The Norodom Palace was the first structure on the site. From the 1870s until 1962, it served as the residence and office of numerous officials (including the French Governor of Cochinchina, Japanese officials, the Prime Minister of the State of Vietnam and by President Ngo Dinh Diem of the Republic of Vietnam).

During a 1962 assassination attempt on President Diem, the Norodom Palace was bombed beyond repair (although the president escaped). A modern design concept was used to construct the new Independence Palace and it took four years to complete (during which time the president was killed). Upon completion, General Nguyen Van Thieu, the last president of South Vietnam, used the palace as his home and office – until he fled the country in 1975.

Famous Tank 390 at Independence Palace, Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

In late April 1975, during the Fall of Saigon (or the Liberation of Saigon, depending on which side is telling the story), the North Vietnamese overtook the city. As the final act to ending the war, they drove a tank through the front gates of Independence Palace and raised a People’s Army of Vietnam flag from the building.

After the war, the palace was renamed Reunification Hall. Today, it is open to visitors (ticket required) who are interested in learning more about the history of the palace and its significance during the Vietnam War.

This concludes our Highlights of Ho Chi Minh City Walking Tour! However, there are more nearby Ho Chi Minh City attractions for visitors who want to continue their sightseeing adventure.

Turtle Lake, HCMC, Saigon, Vietnam

Parks and green space are a welcome sanctuary in the congested and polluted city. Our favorite city park is Tao Dan Park, which is located behind Independence Palace. The park features walking trails, playgrounds, and manicured gardens. Another nearby park is September 23rd Park; although it is not as natural as Tao Dan, there are towering trees that create a nice shaded place to relax and cool down. Turtle Lake Park sits in the middle of a roundabout surrounded by cafes and features a pond with benches (but no turtles).

Ho Chi Minh Free Walking Tour: What You Will Need

walking the crazy Streets of Saigon, HCMC, Vietnam

Visitors who use our Ho Chi Minh City Free Walking Tour don’t need much – but having the following items will make for a more pleasant walk.

Comfortable Shoes

Anyone attempting a walking tour in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam needs comfortable travel shoes ! Sidewalks are often cracked – or simply non-existent – but relatively flat. We completed our tour of Ho Chi Minh City sights wearing flip flops , but other travelers may want to wear proper walking shoes .

Vietnam Weather Gear

The weather in HCMC can be hot and humid – or rainy and wet. Be prepared for the elements by wearing skin-protecting sunscreen and a wide-brimmed travel hat . In the case of rain, bring along a lightweight raincoat or travel umbrella . And, don’t forget the insect repellent !

Anti-Theft Bag for Vietnam

Petty theft is an unfortunate part of HCMC. I (Sarah) carry a Timbuk2 Messenger Bag , which has numerous interior zippered pockets where I can safely keep my everyday travel items . Protect your valuables by using a specifically designed anti-theft travel bag – like the stylish bags by Travelon .

Pro Tip: Some visitors have reported phones being snatched right out of their hands – and tourists who take pictures with their phone camera are an easy target. Rather than risk having your phone stolen, we recommend taking photos with a pocket-sized camera that has a wrist strap – like the Canon Powershot . We also toured HCMC using our go-to travel camera , the DSLR Canon Rebel , but kept it tucked away while walking.

Ho Chi Minh City Tourist Map, WiFi and Trip Planner

Although we provided an online Ho Chi Minh City Center Map of Sights, we think it is beneficial to have a paper map, too. Navigating is much easier and more relaxed when you understand the layout of the city. We recommend buying a HCMC Map – like this one  – before your trip. Staying connected during your HCMC visit is essential; find out why we carry a personal WiFi Hotspot at all times!

Top 20 Things To Do in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

T he sheer number of fun and exciting things to do in Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon, may seem overwhelming at first. This is Vietnam's largest city, after all.

However, many of the most popular activities and attractions are within District 1, making it more manageable.

A friend's wedding in Ho Chi Minh City motivated me to make up for lost time and visit Vietnam after I skipped it during my first backpacking trip through Southeast Asia in 2008.

Kel and I arrived five days before the wedding to acclimate to the new culture, food, and traffic patterns. As our sleep improved, we saw and experienced more of Saigon.

What follows is a list of the best things we did during five full days of sightseeing. I've also included a few attractions and day trips on my to-do list that we didn't ultimately have time for.

What To See in Saigon

1. war remnants museum.

One of the most challenging, albeit eye-opening, things to do in Ho Chi Minh City is a visit to the War Remnants Museum, dedicated to preserving the memory of the Vietnam War.

Previously known as the “Museum of Chinese and American War Crimes,” it was established in 1975, shortly after the end of the war.

Everything here is told from the perspective of the Vietnamese. The alternative viewpoints are thought-provoking for Americans like me, who grew up with different narratives.

The museum features a variety of exhibits that showcase the terrible effects of the war on the Vietnamese people, including photographs, weapons (i.e., guns, landmines), and documents.

Several outdoor displays include larger military equipment such as tanks, helicopters, and howitzers.

One of the most powerful exhibits is the “Agent Orange Room,” which displays the effects of the defoliant and chemical weapon on Vietnamese civilians.

The museum also has a section on the war crimes committed by American troops, including the My Lai Massacre , which resulted in the murder of more than 500 civilians.

The images are sometimes graphic, but I believe it's essential to view them as a reminder of the horrors of war and why it's best avoided.

You can visit the War Remnants Museum on your own or do a guided tour that includes the Ben Thanh Market (the city's largest market).

Emotionally, the experience reminded me of walking through S-21, the former Khmer Rouge prison in Phnom Penh used during the Cambodian genocide.

2. Independence Palace (Reunification Palace)

Independence Palace, also known as the Reunification Palace, is a historic landmark. It was constructed in the 1960s as the official residence and workplace of the President of South Vietnam.

The palace has a modernist design blending Eastern and Western architectural styles. It features spacious halls, conference rooms, a helipad, and underground tunnels.

The palace played a significant role in the Vietnam War, as it was the site of the war's end when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through the palace gates on April 30, 1975.

Today, the palace serves as a museum where visitors can explore its rooms and exhibitions showcasing the history and culture of Vietnam.

The rooftop is especially interesting, as two bombs were dropped by the North Vietnamese (Viet Cong) on it during the war.

The palace has been preserved in its original state, including the tank that crashed through the gates, making it a fascinating destination for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike.

3. Central Post Office

The Central Post Office is a pretty French colonial building located in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

Built between 1886 and 1891, it was designed by Gustave Eiffel, the famous architect behind the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The building features a spacious interior with a high arched ceiling and ornate decorations, including a large mural of the city's founder, Hung Vuong.

Visitors can send postcards and letters from the post office or admire the architecture and historical significance of the building, which is considered one of the city's top tourist attractions.

4. Notre Dame Cathedral

Across the street from the Central Post Office is Notre Dame Cathedral, a byproduct of French colonial rule.

Completed in 1880, the Notre Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City was constructed entirely of building materials imported from France, including thousands of red bricks from Marseille .

Stained glass windows and a high-vaulted ceiling are hallmarks of the interior's European design.

The front facade was covered by scaffolding during my visit as the building continued to undergo renovations.

5. People's Committee Building

The splendid People's Committee Building is a few blocks south of Notre Dame Cathedral.

Completed in 1908 by French architect Ferret Eugene, the building was initially named the Hotel de Ville and served as the administrative center of the colonial government.

The building features an attractive blend of French Renaissance and classical motifs.

This is a great place to linger if you have the time and watch the many motorbikes whiz by every time the nearby traffic light turns green.

Behind you, facing the opposite direction toward a long pedestrian mall is a statue of Ho Chi Minh.

6. Saigon Opera House

The Saigon Opera House, also known as the Municipal Theatre of Ho Chi Minh City, is a majestic colonial-era building in the heart of the city.

Constructed in 1897 by French architect Eugene Ferret, the Opera House blends European and Vietnamese design elements, including a spacious interior with ornate decorations and a grand staircase.

The Opera House hosts cultural events, including operas, ballets, and concerts, and is considered a symbol of Vietnam's cultural heritage.

We stopped by the entrance and learned there was a Bamboo Circus performance the same week we were in town. The tickets weren't expensive, but we didn't have time to check it out.

7. Saigon Deck at Bitexco Financial Tower

Walk about four blocks south of Ho Chi Minh's statue along the pedestrian street (D. Nguyen Hue), and you'll arrive at the Bitexco Financial Tower, home to the Saigon Skydeck.

At its completion in 2010, it was Vietnam's tallest skyscraper at 861 feet. The observation deck is on the 49th floor and is among the best places for panoramic city views.

Contrary to my initial thinking, the large circular platform near the top of the building is a helipad, not an outdoor observation platform. The Skydeck is just below it and fully enclosed by glass windows.

From here, you'll see Landmark 81, a newer skyscraper and current record-holder for the tallest building in Vietnam (1,513 feet). And it's the second-tallest tower in Southeast Asia.

In addition to the views, there's a small museum dedicated to the Ao Dai, a traditional Vietnamese dress.

8. Landmark 81 – Vietnam's Tallest Building

Vietnam's tallest building, Landmark 81, is a short rideshare or taxi ride from District 1. Like the Bitexco Financial Tower, it was constructed alongside the curvaceous Saigon River.

At nearly twice the height of the Bitexco, you'll notice the difference as your ears pop riding up Landmark 81's super-fast elevator.

Related: Top 10 Places to Visit in Vietnam

Once you reach the 79th floor, you have the top three floors to explore. Tickets include a small free drink (Vietnamese coffee, tea, or juice).

9. Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts

The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts occupies the former residence of a wealthy Chinese-born businessman, once one of Vietnam's most affluent residents.

The yellow-and-white colonial-era mansion was constructed in the early 1930s; the museum took over in 1987.

The three-story fine arts museum showcases an extensive collection of contemporary and traditional art from Vietnam, including paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and lacquerware.

It's home to more than 21,000 pieces, ranging from classical to modern, and reflecting the diverse artistic culture of Vietnam.

10. Ben Thanh Market

The Ben Thanh Market is bustling and iconic in the city center. Perusing the market is a popular activity for locals and tourists in Ho Chi Minh City.

Various goods are for sale, from fresh produce and local Vietnamese delicacies to clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs.

The market is known for its lively atmosphere, with vendors competing for customers' attention. Bargaining is expected, so remember to negotiate before you buy.

It's also a great place to sample traditional Vietnamese street food, such as pho (soup) and banh mi (sandwich).

11. Tao Dan Park

Adjacent to Independence Palace to the southwest is Tao Dan Park, a green oasis in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City.

Covering an area of 25 square acres, Tao Dan Park is a popular attraction for locals and tourists. This peaceful park features a range of flora and several ornamental lakes and fountains.

Visitors can enjoy a stroll and perhaps catch locals practicing Tai Chi. The park also hosts cultural events and festivals throughout the year, making it a vibrant hub of activity.

12. Jade Emperor Pagoda

Opened in 1909, the Jade Emperor Pagoda is dedicated to the Taoist god, the Jade Emperor, and features a mix of Taoist, Buddhist, and Confucian influences in its design and art.

Visitors can see intricately carved wooden statues, colorful paintings, and porcelain figurines depicting scenes from traditional Chinese mythology.

The temple is filled with incense smoke, resulting from the devotees who stop by throughout the day.

13. History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City

History fans may consider visiting the History Museum of Ho Chi Minh City briefly. Housed in a French colonial building, this museum showcases the history of Vietnam from its earliest times (Prehistoric period 500,000 years ago) to the present day.

14. Giac Lam Pagoda

The Giac Lam Pagoda is one of the oldest temples in Ho Chi Minh City. Initially built in the 18th century, this Buddhist temple has been renovated and expanded.

Visitors can see a range of architectural styles, from traditional Chinese to French colonial, as well as ornate carvings, statues, and murals depicting Buddhist themes.

The pagoda is also home to several relics, including a 300-year-old statue of Buddha and a bell cast in 1799.

Food & Drink

Now I want to turn your attention to the coffee shops and Vietnamese food to fuel your adventures.

15. Vietnamese Coffee

Vietnam is the second-largest exporter of coffee in the world after Brazil, a fact I didn't know until I arrived there.

If you like coffee, one of the top places to enjoy a cup is Soo Kafe, my favorite Saigon cafe . It's across the street from the west side of the Ben Thanh Market.

Soo Kafe is the first place I tried traditional Vietnamese egg coffee . This specialty coffee was developed in Hanoi in the 1950s and its now available throughout the country.

Vietnamese iced coffee, yogurt coffee, and salt coffee are also worth trying.

16. Vietnamese Cuisine

Traditional Vietnamese cuisine is known for its fresh ingredients, intricate preparation, and a balance of flavors and textures.

Common dishes include:

  • Pho: Noodle soup made with beef or chicken broth, rice noodles, and meat or seafood.
  • Banh mi: Sandwich made with a French baguette filled with grilled meat, pickled vegetables, and fresh herbs.
  • Bun cha: Grilled pork served with rice noodles, fresh herbs, and a dipping sauce.
  • Spring rolls: Fresh vegetables and herbs wrapped in rice paper and served with a peanut dipping sauce.
  • Banh xeo: A crispy, savory pancake made with rice flour and stuffed with pork, shrimp, and bean sprouts.

If you're not familiar with Vietnamese food when you arrive, it won't take long to find a few typical dishes you'll enjoy.

17. Street Food Tour

A Saigon street food tour led by a local guide can serve as a terrific introduction to Vietnamese food and drinks. It's also a great way to make new friends, if only for a night.

My friend, Nick, who got married, organized one for us. And it was one of the first things we did upon arriving in Ho Chi Minh City.

Over two-to-three hours, we walked around District 1, eating at various street food stalls and drinking Vietnamese iced coffee and locally-produced craft beer.

18. Nightlife in District 1

The fun doesn't end when the sun goes down in Ho Chi Minh City; some may say it's only getting started. The nightlife in District 1 is a fun mix of sidewalk dining, rooftop bars, and speakeasies.

You'll find everything from cheap beers, live music, and a party atmosphere on Bui Vien Street to creative drinks at world-class cocktail bars like Summer Experiment and Stir.

19. Cu Chi Tunnels

One of the most popular day trips from Ho Chi Minh City is a guided tour of Cu Chi Tunnels , a vast underground network with 137 miles worth of tunnels used during the Vietnam War.

Visitors (who are not claustrophobic) can crawl through the tunnels to understand what it must've been like to live and fight from them during the war.

Cu Chi Tunnel tours are available as a half-day standalone morning or afternoon experience or combined with activities such as the War Remnants Museum or Mekong Delta.

20. Mekong Delta Tour

A boat ride along the Mekong Delta is another way to spend time outside Ho Chi Minh City.

All sorts of options are available, such as a Mekong Delta tour with a cooking class or a two-day tour that includes time spent at Cai Rang, the largest floating market in the Mekong Delta.
