200+ Travel Agent Rates, 2023 [+PDF Download]

One of the biggest perks of becoming a travel agent is the wealth of travel experiences you have access to. As a travel agent, if you take vendor training, or reach a supplier's sales threshold you'll be rewarded with special travel agent rates for personal travel, special perks, and amenities, and access to FAM (familiarization trips) to immerse yourself in destinations.

But the big question is, what are these discounted travel agent rates, and how do travel agents access them? We updated HAR's Travel Agent Rate PDF download that includes details on 200+ supplier discounts. The download includes information on travel agent rates, special discounts, and special reward programs — all exclusive to travel agents (and maybe your friend or family :) ).

Not only that, but the download eligibility details and links to the travel advisor portal so you can register your travel agency. (Not a travel agent just yet? Here's how to become one!) You can view the full PDF below!

But of course, this article is so much more than a download! We'll cover what different kinds of travel agent discounts are out there, how to qualify a supplier's travel agent loyalty or reward program, and elaborate on some of the top travel agent hotel discounts.

Different Types of Travel Agent Rates & Incentives

Every supplier is going to have a different kind of travel agent rate or loyalty program. Some are complicated. Some are simple. Here’s what you can generally expect in terms of travel agent discount programs (emphasis on generally here):

  • Point Systems: Depending on the vendor, point systems offer you just that — a certain number of points per night booked. Points allotted will likely vary by tier of property. If you book a luxury property, you’ll get more points. Travel Agent point systems, while somewhat complicated, are great for flexibility. It levels the playing field and operates like an amped-up client-facing rewards program.
  • Cash incentives: Some vendors will offer you cash hard cash for bookings (e.g. you get $25 for every room night booked). This isn't a rate or discount, but it's definitely an incentive!
  • Straight-up flat Discounts: Some travel agent discounts are simple—you get a certain percentage off your stay. Easy peasy.
  • Special Reduced Rates: Because you’re a travel agent (or because you love to travel), you know that suppliers have peak seasons, different classes of properties, rooms, etc. Many suppliers will issue reduced rates exclusive to travel agents, outlining what the cost is for a different room category, itinerary, sailing date, etc.
  • Traveling for Free: Free travel is not the norm. There are circumstances travel agents may get a free cruise, a free theme park ticket, or a few free nights at a resort (etc.). This typically happens after a travel agent completes a vendor’s training program. (They want to reward you for taking a deep dive into learning their product and want you to fall in love with it so you can sell more of it.)
  • Group Rates: I’m not going to go deep into group rates, since this is something that (believe it or not) is typically offered in addition to travel agent rates. If you book a certain number of people on a trip or cruise (or a certain number of nights stay) you get a free credit you can use for yourself or for a client. (e.g. for Globus brands, you can receive travel agent discounts ranging from 25% - 100% depending on itinerary, group size, and when you book.)
  • Familiarization (FAM) Trips: In my mind, FAM trips are more of a travel agent perk than a travel agent discount or rate. FAMs are free or deeply discounted trips offered to travel agents (or travel professionals) to educate them about a product or destination. Often FAMs are highly structured and facilitated by a group of travel professionals. I don’t consider this a travel agent discount, but it’s an “all work and no play” scenario (or close to it). But I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention it because it’s still a huge travel agent perk.

Suppliers want to keep travel agents happy! Many will have some combination of these perks above. Am I missing any kinds of travel agent rates or discount programs? Yes. I guarantee you I am. Holler at me in the comments below!

10 Things You Need to Know About Travel Agent Rates & Discounts

Travel agent rates aren't a one-size-fits-all kind of deal. So here are a few things to know about what to expect when you're shopping for discounts:

1. You Need an Accreditation Number to Get travel agent Discounts

You need to be a travel agent to access travel agent rates and discounts. What makes someone a travel agent? An accreditation number . . . whether you get your own or align with a host agency.

2. Travel Agent Discounts are for Active Travel Agents

Beyond being a travel agent, you need to sell travel. I know this may seem incredibly obvious, but oftentimes vendors will only offer travel agent rates or perks after you reach a certain sales threshold. What does this mean? It means that the more you sell, the better the discount.

Ultimately, if you’re dabbling in selling travel, your travel discounts will likely be low to moderate and may not even justify the expense of getting an accreditation.

3. A Niche Will Help You Get More Travel Agent Bonuses & Rates (Here’s Why)

Part of developing a travel agent niche is getting a pulse on who your preferred suppliers are. When you begin to get a handle on what suppliers you love, you can focus your time and energies on learning those suppliers inside out.

This will help you establish the deep product knowledge and supplier relationships required to be a successful seller. In turn, you earn more travel agent discounts and rewards as your sales increase.

4. You Often Need to Complete a Vendor Certification to Get a Discount

If you’re completely new, you’re not going to have a long scroll of past sales to help you access travel agent rates. But don’t worry. Many suppliers they offer special rates, FAMs, or even free trips once you complete their training programs.

You'll want to make sure you stay current on supplier certifications so you can keep up with their updates and offer your clients the most recent info. Suppliers want you to love their brands and they know you gotta experience yourself to love it!

5. Rules Most Likely Apply

Travel agent discounts are often saddled with long terms and conditions and/or fine print. This fine print may be peppered with info like blackout dates, rates are subject to change (without asking for your permission), or mentions that travel agent rates are non-commissionable.

6. Travel Agent Rates and Programs can Change (Without telling you)

Yep. They can and do. So when you read about specific travel agent discounts below, be sure you always check directly with your supplier/ BDM (Business Development Manager) for the most updated travel agent discount policy!

7. If You Book Under a Host, Will You Get Your Discount?

Yes. Your host does not get all the glory, don’t worry. When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

When you set up your logins on host portals, suppliers will know which agent booked what and you’ll get your due glory.

There are a few things to consider if you're hosted and looking for travel agent rates. Some suppliers use what's called a secondary phone field. This essentially allows vendors to know which individual agencies (that's would be you!) are booking under the host's accreditation .

Long story short, Maureen Bourcy, Business Analyst with NEST Plus cautions that if this is the case, "[advisors] have to meet the booking minimums to take advantage of the agent discount as the vendor sees you as your own agency. Basically, they no longer fall under the host umbrella where all the sales aggregate, and any agent can take advantage of discounts even if they have never booked."

Another exception is Disney. For Earmarked Disney agencies (typically larger travel agencies), it's the accrediting agency that will receive the allotted theme park tickets and travel agent rates to distribute among their agents. So ask your agency how that works if you want to get in it! That said, there are still incentives for solo Disney advisors who complete the College of Disney Knowledge! (Just check out the download!)

8. Travel Agent Rates are (Often) Non-Commissionable

You can safely assume that travel agent rates are non-commissionable. It’s a “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” scenario.

9. If you get bonuses, you may need to pay taxes on it

Any point system that can be exchanged for cash may be subject to taxes if you earn more than $600 in bonuses. Don’t ask me. Ask your accountant and make sure you know the tax implications of points you cash in (there’s nothing more fun than a surprise 1099!)

10. Spontaneity is Rewarded

Nothing is as sad as an empty cruise ship. Many suppliers offer you deeper discounts closer to the departure date. So if you’re up for a nail-biter, it might make the difference between a 20% discount and a 50% discount.

Travel Agent Rates & Discounts that Will Make Your Brain Explode

Let's be honest with ourselves, this is probably why you're here for! Here's HAR's travel agent rate resource, below! To find more information on the rates, click on the link in the cell.

Also, things change! As always, check directly with the supplier for the most current travel agent rates and discounts!

Next up, we're going to summarize different programs for some of the most sought-after hotels (according to Google).

Questions to Ask Suppliers About their Travel Agent Rate Plans

The chart above gives you a great sneak peek into what you can expect for special travel agent rates and discounts.

If you’re really wanting to compare different rates and programs, here are a few questions you can ask suppliers about their discounts:

  • Is it commissionable?
  • What travel accreditations are available?
  • Are there companion benefits?
  • Do you need to complete supplier education to secure the rate? If so, how often do I need to renew or recertify (if at all)?
  • Are there other eligibility requirements?
  • What's the sales threshold to attain travel agent rates or benefits?
  • Does belonging to a host agency impact my benefits?
  • What are typical blackout dates or seasons?
  • How long do I have to redeem my travel agent benefits (if it’s a point system)? When do they expire?
  • How do I request or access these benefits?

These questions will help you gauge a supplier’s “user-friendliness” and accessibility when it comes to travel agent discounts. It may also help you narrow down which suppliers you want to focus your time and energies on .

I'm going to do a deeper dive into a few travel agent hotel rates. I'm including just a few here, that most commonly come up in searches. They offer a good idea of what kind of rates travel agents can expect from hotels.

You may be able to find better travel agents rates if you book the hotel through a tour operator.

Keep in mind that these hotel programs listed below are hotel-direct. Advisors seeking discounted hotel rates will most likely them directly through the hotel (rather than booking via a tour operator).

Another thing to note is that hotels with education programs typically will offer the best travel rates (above a standard travel agent rate).

IHG is linked and included in our download above. Yay! IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate. Not to shabs!

Here are a few more details.

IHG offers a baseline discount of 35% off their Best Flex Rate.

Marriott (and Starwood) Travel Agent Rates

Marriott acquired Starwood in 2015. So if you're looking for Starwood's travel agent rates, look no further than Marriott. Marriott has two different types of travel agent rates. Here's the rundown:

1. Marriott's Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's travel agent rate is their blanket travel agent rate program which is available to any accredited travel agent with a valid IATA, ARC, CLIA or TIDS accreditation number . The travel agent rate varies depending on availability, hotel category, and season. Marriott's travel agent discounts run up to 50% , but you can typically expect less. (At the time of writing this, the discounts ranged from 10-15% when I search my hometown.)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability)

Marriott's travel agent rate offers can be used to book up to two rooms for unlimited nights (depending on availability). Here's how to take advantage of Marriott's travel agent rate offers:

Marriott Travel Agent Programs

1. To access Marriot's rates, travel agents need an IATA ARC, CLIA, or TIDS number (and the ID to prove it when you check-in).

2. To book Marriott's rates, you can log in here .

3. Go to "Promotions" and "Travel Agent Rate Search"

2. Marriott's Fam-Tastic Travel Agent Rates

Marriott's Fam-Tastic program is designed less for personal leisure and more to provide an opportunity for agents to familiarize themselves with properties (hence the name). This program is only available to Marriott's preferred travel agencies . If you're with a host agency, you can check on their host profile or drop them a Q&A to see if Marriott is one of their preferred suppliers .

For Marriott's Fam-tastic program, advisors can reserve one room for four nights maximum.

In addition to fulfilling the requirements for a standard travel agent rate, advisors must also complete the Hotel Excellence program. Their FAM-tastic rate offers deeper discounts than their standard travel agent rate but with more restrictions. Agents can use this rate after they complete their core HE! classes. The rate is available ongoing on an annual basis for agents who fulfill their continuing credits. For Marriott's Fam-tastic program, advisors can reserve one room for four nights maximum.

Here's how to access Marriott's FAM-tastic rates:

1. Log into your Marriott account here with your accreditation number

2. Go to Marriott's Hotel Excellence Program and click Register Now if you need to create an account or sign in if you already have one. From here you can access their programming and redeem your travel agent benefits.

Agents can book two rooms for a seven-night maximum at a travel agent rate. Below is an example of what it looks like on the user end.

While Hyatt's site advertises discounts up to 50%, they start on the low end, often falling below "book now & save" discounts. Here's an image for two off-season bookings below for a Hyatt Place in the weekday winter off-season (Nov. 29 - Dec.1st, 2021).

Additionally, there's a 2-room booking limit with Hyatt's Travel Agent rates. However, they do not cap the number of room nights if the rate is available.

Here's how to book Hyatt's travel agent rates:

  • Agents must have a CLIA, IATAN, or TIDs (for agents outside the US) accreditation number and ID card. (Outside US, agents need an IATA/TIDS).
  • Agents must be a World of Hyatt member. You can create that account here .

Travel Agent Airline Discounts

I'm going to take a deep dive into travel agent airline discounts. Why? Travel agent airline discounts are more complicated to access for a smaller reward . Here's why . . .

These travel agent airline rates are typically referred to as "AD50" or "AD75," signifying 50%-75% airline discounts for travel agents. At first, this seems like an amazing discount. But as you’ve probably guessed, travel agents do not get 50-75% off their airline tickets. Otherwise, so many people would want to become a travel agent that our website would break :)

Without going too deep into the weeds, here's why these airline discounts can seem misleading at first. Airlines break seats down into many different fare classes. All these fare classes have different pricing and rules attached to them. Among other things, the fare classes help the airline understand if you paid full fare or a discounted rate, if you’re in first class/business class/economy class, if you’re doing one way or round trip, and lots of other details. (You can learn more about airline fare basis classes here .)

Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

When it comes to travel agent airline discounts, t he AD50 and AD75 discounts apply only to Y-fare class seats, which are full-fare economy seats. Essentially, they’re the most expensive economy-class tickets possible. Even at 50-75% off, Y fare class seats usually cost more than the other economy tickets available.

Not only are AD50 and AD75 discounts often more expensive than other economy tickets available, but there are also more hoops to jump through to access them. Airlines that offer these flight discounts will often have stringent eligibility requirements and detailed terms and conditions required to even request them.

Ultimately, when it comes to airline discounts for travel agents, you may find yourself fanning a small flame. Travel agent airfare discounts often only apply to full-fare rate classes, and travel agents are likely able to find better fares for personal travel through other means.

According to seasoned corporate travel advisor and owner of Pioneer Travel, Mike Edic, "By the time you figure out the 'discounted' price, you can still purchase a real ticket for a lot less." Edic elaborated that these rates are seldom cheaper unless it's a last-minute booking (where all that remains are those pricey, full-fare Y-class seats).

However, don't let that discourage you from becoming a travel agent ! As you can tell from this article, there are tons of different ways travel agents tap into discounted travel. Not only that but as you develop expertise , you'll have the hawk-eye to find the airline rates that offer you the best value . . . even without an AD50 or AD75 code!

Is a travel agent worth it the pros and cons.

Travel experts agree there are several advantages to hiring a vacation planner.

The Pros & Cons of Using a Travel Agent

A travel agent can save you money and time.

Need to pivot your trip plans but don't want to deal with the extra time, money and hassle of rebooking flights and accommodations on your own? That's just one area where a knowledgeable travel agent (also commonly known as a travel advisor) can help. Read on to discover the other benefits – as well as the downsides – of using a travel agent, so you can confidently decide whether or not a travel agent is worth it for your next trip.

The Pros of Using a Travel Agent

Travel agents can save you money – and get you other perks.

"In some cases, you'll actually get a better  deal by working with a travel agent," says Jackie Steele, travel expert at MagicGuides . "This could be in the form of a cruise onboard credit (free spending money to use on the ship), access to special agency/group rates, or even just learning about a discount you qualify for but weren't aware of." The best agents will even keep an eye on new discounts as they're announced and apply them to your trip even after you've booked, he notes.

Travel agents handle all the details

Hotel room? Booked. Dinner reservations? Made. Tour tickets? Ready to go. A travel agent handles every detail of your vacation itinerary. "The traveler still gets to be involved in the fun part of dreaming up ideas and providing their travel wishes, while we take and perfect them," says Jessica Parker, founder of Trip Whisperer .

Molly McShea, owner and travel advisor at McShea Travel , points out that travel agents can also help with timing logistics. "Travel agents know how many days should be spent in each destination, which tours go together, and how many things you should do in a day," she says, adding that crafting an itinerary can be challenging if it's not something you regularly do. Additionally, travel agents can help you choose the best time to visit your preferred destination(s) based on seasonality and your budget, and sift through travel insurance policies to find the best option for your needs.

Travel agents can provide local expertise

"A travel advisor's industry connections and relationships provide added value to their clients," says Valerie Edman, a luxury travel advisor and agency owner at Cultured Travel LLC. She says when working with a travel agent, travelers gain access to a global network of connections including:

  • In-destination specialists who work exclusively with travel advisors and can connect travelers with unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences they wouldn't otherwise know about
  • Exclusive experiences not available to the general public

You'll avoid surprise fees

When deciding if a travel agent is worth it for you, remember this: A reputable agent can guarantee you won't encounter any surprise fees on accommodations and activities once your trip is booked.

You'll have someone to troubleshoot unexpected travel issues

A travel advisor is essentially your personal vacation concierge. "Because they've been around for so long, agents really know what to look for," says Christopher Elliott , a consumer advocate and journalist. "Travel agents are among the first to know about flight cancellations and delays , making it easy for them to rebook itineraries right away."

The Cons of Using a Travel Agent

It might not be your cheapest option.

There are some instances when it makes more sense to plan your own trip. "If you're planning a quick flight from New York City to Los Angeles, it's easy enough to book it yourself online directly or through a third-party booking site," says Elliott. "If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip or bucket list honeymoon , that's when you call the experts."

You'll have less flexibility in your itinerary

The upside of working with a travel agent is having someone plan an epic vacation for you based on industry knowledge and local expertise. But this can also be a downside in the event you discover an activity you'd like to do or a restaurant you'd like to try that isn't on your pre-planned itinerary. If you alter your plans, you risk losing money; plus, the time it takes for you and your travel agent to coordinate your change of plans may not be worth the hassle.

You still have to do some research

It's important to find an agent you can trust, which means you still have to do some of the vacation planning. For this part, Parker recommends picking up the phone. "Lots of people avoid or don't pick up the phone as much anymore," she says. "That's where you get the high-touch service, tone of voice, excitement or concerns to manage." She advises to look for the following red flags:

  • No fees: " Travel advisors are charging planning fees more now or increasing them, so the client knows more confidently than ever, we work for them, not the suppliers with the best commissions," Parker explains. "There are a lot of things that are non-commissionable and the advisor's time and expertise shouldn't be given away for free, either. That's the best way to show an advisor takes their business seriously."
  • Limited options: If you work with someone who is inexperienced or has an incentive to book you with a certain supplier, they may not be prioritizing your best interests. "It's important to check if they are with a larger consortia, accreditations and network, typically listed on their website and signatures," says Parker. "That level of mindshare doesn't come with a lone advisor unless they have many, many years of experience."
  • Slow response times: If communication is delayed, that's a sign they may be too busy to plan your trip – but again, this is something you can avoid by having the right conversations early on.

Edman suggestes starting your search with the American Society of Travel Advisors . "ASTA-verified travel advisors are committed to the highest industry standards and have verifiable industry knowledge so consumers can feel confident in working with them," she says.

Hotel excellence faqs.

Update Feb. 2024: All Preferred Travel Agencies (PTAs) must take action by March 31, 2024 to maintain Preferred Travel Agency status. View your Hotel Excellence! dashboard to check your status. Agencies whose Hotel Excellence! dashboard indicates that they are Standard continue to have the ability to complete the requirements to become a Preferred Travel Agency location and enjoy the associated benefits. Marriott Bonvoy® membership is now a requirement to access the Hotel Excellence! training and receive all associated Hotel Excellence! benefits. Enter your Marriott Bonvoy Member Number in the Marriott Bonvoy Membership section at the top of your MI Partner Privileges profile.

Preferred Travel Agency Program (PTA) & Recertification

What is the preferred travel agency program.

Marriott’s Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) program allows ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA accredited travel agencies to earn a preferred commission (currently 10%) for all transient commissionable bookings made across Marriott’s portfolio of brands worldwide. The PTA program has two criteria: (1) An agency owner or manager must electronically agree to the PTA commitment, and (2) the agency must have at least one qualified travel advisor for each agency location.

Agencies not fulfilling all the criteria will be a Standard Travel Agency with Marriott and receive  8% commission on all transient commissionable bookings.

Design Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, All-Inclusive by Marriott Bonvoy®, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and MGM Collection do not participate in the program.

What do I need to do to maintain my PTA status?

Annually, an agency owner/manager must: 1) agree to the terms of being a Preferred Travel Agency and update their personal profile; and 2) have at least one qualified graduate of Marriott’s Hotel Excellence! training program that includes the “Core” training and the annual Continuing Education training for the certification cycle. Agencies that have not met both criteria by the end of the certification cycle will revert to Standard Travel Agency status. Travel agency owners/managers can view their Preferred Travel Agency status on their Dashboard at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com . Fulfillment of these requirements must be met for each agency ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDSCLIA number. Please note, by registering or updating your profile, you agree that we may provide your agency owner with your Hotel Excellence! graduation status as it relates to your agency maintaining their Preferred Travel Agency status and benefits.

What is the duration of my PTA status?

PTA status is valid for the current certification cycle, typically one year. Agencies must act by the current recertification deadline to maintain their status for the next cycle. Recertification requirements are communicated to the email provided by the agency owner/manager in sufficient time for the criteria to be met by the recertification deadline. However, each agency owner/manager should log in to their Hotel Excellence! account to review their PTA status and ensure all requirements have been met.

What is my agency committing to when we agree to the PTA Terms?

The Preferred Travel Agency Terms can be found by clicking on the “PTA Commitment” badge on the agency owner/manager’s dashboard at hotelexcellence.marriott.com . This badge will only appear if you answer “yes” to the question on your profile, “Are you the Owner, Manager, or Senior Executive of this Company / Agency?”

What happens if my agency does not fulfill the criteria by the recertification deadline?

If an agency does not fulfill the PTA criteria by the end of the recertification deadline, they will default to Standard Travel Agency status and receive an 8% commission on all transient commissionable reservations until such time as the requirements have been fulfilled.

Will my agency be allowed to fulfill the requirements after the recertification deadline?

If the recertification deadline is missed, agencies can recertify at any time. However, any lapse in PTA criteria will change an agency’s status to Standard Travel Agency with an 8% commission. Once the PTA criteria has been met, Marriott will elevate the agency to Preferred Travel Agency status and 10% commission will apply for stays departing from that point forward on all transient commissionable reservations, provided these requirements are maintained.

Will I receive reminders about the annual recertification requirements?

Marriott will send three email reminders  to the email address on file as the PTA Commitment signer for the Preferred Travel Agency owner/manager before the recertification deadline. It is the responsibility of the owner/manager to have a valid email address in their profile and to log in to their Hotel Excellence! account before the recertification deadline to ensure all requirements have been met.

How can I ensure that Marriott has my agency's email address so that we receive notifications?

Agency owners/managers should create a MI Partner Privileges profile with their email address, and attest that they are the owner/manager or other senior executive affiliated with the agency location so they can agree to the Preferred Travel Agency terms.  A verification email will be sent requesting confirmation of receipt.  Once verified, the email address will be used to communicate important information about that agency location's PTA status; therefore, it is recommended the email be updated as needed.

I have multiple ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations within my organization. May I commit to the PTA terms collectively for them?

Each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA number must register at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com and agree to the PTA terms individually.

How can I see which ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA locations in my organization have HE! graduates, and how can I track when my consultants recertify?

Each agency owner/manager should create an account at https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com to access their Agency Dashboard. The Dashboard will clearly indicate the following for each ARC/IATA/IATAN/TIDS/CLIA location: a) If a qualified graduate of the training is needed; b) whether the PTA terms have been agreed to; c) whether the agency is “Preferred” or “Standard”.

Will my preferred commission levels apply to the group business I place with Marriott?

No. The Preferred Travel Agency program applies only to commissionable transient bookings. Group commissions will be paid in accordance with the signed Group Sales Agreement.

Where can I obtain information about Marriott’s commission policies and procedures?

View Marriott’s Commission Policy and Commission FAQs to link to frequently asked questions regarding commissions .

Hotel Excellence! (HE!) Training & Required Recertification

What is the hotel excellence program.

Hotel Excellence! is an online training program, specifically designed for professional travel professionals, to help them navigate the ever-changing hotel industry and to help their clients choose hotels that best suit their needs and style. The training is accessible on a multi-device platform to allow maximum flexibility and convenience. In addition to the “Core” training, annual Continuing Education recertification training will be developed and required for eligibility for Fam-Tastic benefits. There are also supplemental modules available that are optional and allow travel professionals the opportunity to customize their learning to best fit their needs.

How will HE! training benefit me as a travel professional?

In addition to the robust knowledge provided within HE!, qualified graduates gain exclusive access to Marriott’s industry-leading Fam-Tastic familiarization rate program, offering discounted rates at the majority of Marriott properties. (See the Fam-Tastic topic for more details on this exclusive program.) Graduates also receive Continuing Educations Units: 10 CEUs towards the maintenance of the Travel Institute’s CTA/CTC certification, or 8 CEUs for Association of Canadian Travel Agencies certification or 10 CLIA credits for CLIA agents.

How will completion of the HE! training program benefit my agency?

The training will familiarize agents with Marriott’s robust portfolio of brands and what makes each brand unique. It will also help travel consultants work more efficiently, close more sales, and benefit your agency’s bottom line. This is important as the travel and tourism landscape changes, customers book travel in new ways, and new waves of travelers are emerging. More than ever before, travel agencies must demonstrate their value and expertise, and the HE! training is a smart investment for your agency. The HE! training is available at no cost, and agencies who employ travel professionals that are qualified advisors who have successfully completed the training are eligible to become a Marriott Preferred Travel Agency.

How do I access the training?

Hotel Excellence! training is accessible via https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com . All Core, Continuing Education and optional training modules can be found via the Hotel Excellence! dashboard. Log in to https://hotelexcellence.marriott.com  and from the top of your dashboard at the top right, click the “?” icon to view a site tour on how to access the training as well as a quick tour of other features available on your HE! dashboard.

Do I need to complete all of the modules in the Core Training/curriculum?

No. The training has been designed to allow travel professionals the flexibility to choose their own learning journey. To satisfy the requirements for the Core training, complete one module from the Introduction section, two modules from the Brands Training section and three modules from the Foundational Training section. There are also optional modules in the Supplemental Modules section to help travel professionals strengthen their industry knowledge.

Can I complete the training on my mobile device or tablet?

Yes. The training is accessible from most web-enabled devices and browsers. Advisors can learn at their own pace by stopping and restarting the training seamlessly.

Is there an app I need to download?

No. HE! training is accessible on the following browsers and devices. The website and training will adapt to any web-enabled device the agent is using.

Browsers: Chrome & Edge (83+), Safari (14+), Firefox(77+), Opera (68+), Samsung Internet (11+), Android (81+)

Devices: Android 8.0+ (Oreo), iPads® (Except The iPad® Mini) And iPhones® (version iOS 13+)

How much time should I allow to complete the training?

On average, users take just under two hours to complete the Core HE! training and 30 minutes to complete the annual Continuing Education training.

Why has the sign in process to Marriott's Hotel Excellence! website and Fam-Tastic booking changed?

Privacy and security are a top priority for Marriott, and we know how important it is to protect your data. We've changed the sign-in process to be more secure, ensuring the highest standards of security, while streamlining your experience across all of our Intermediary Partner Program websites.

How does Marriott use my information after I have registered for the training?

Marriott will use your email address to send you important updates about your Hotel Excellence! recertification status. Your email address will also be used to send you Reserved for You, the exclusive e-Newsletter for graduates of Hotel Excellence!, should you opt in. From time to time, and only upon request by your agency, Marriott may identify you to your agency as a graduate of Hotel Excellence! to confirm your agency is meeting the requirements as a Preferred Travel Agency (PTA) and receiving the PTA status and benefits.  View our Terms of Use and Privacy Center for additional information.

I started the Core/Continuing Education training module(s) but the icon on my dashboard displays as “Not Started”. Why?

Upon successful completion of the assessment, the status under the Core/Continuing Education icon on the dashboard will update to “Completed” and a certificate displays in the HE! Curriculum pane next to the title of the completed module(s). If you do not successfully complete the assessment, the progress gauge on the HE! Curriculum pane will display at 85% complete, and the status under the Core Training/ Continuing Education icon on the dashboard will display as “Partially Completed”.

The Fam-Tastic Rate may be booked for a maximum of 4 nights per stay.

If I haven’t completed the HE! Core training, will I still receive Fam-Tastic rate benefits by taking the current year’s Continuing Education?

What brands participate in the Fam-Tastic program?

All brands across Marriott’s portfolio except Design Hotels, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and MGM Collection participate in the Fam-Tastic program. Please note that Fam-Tastic rates are yieldable and subject to availability.

As soon as your Hotel Excellence! dashboard indicates that you are “Qualified” for Fam-Tastic, stays can be booked immediately.

How do I book the Fam-Tastic rate?

Fam-Tastic reservations must be made in advance and can only be made via marriott.com/travelagents . Log in with your MI Partner Privileges credentials. If you meet the requirements to qualify for the Fam-Tastic rate, the booking page will appear, and you may continue to search and book your Fam-Tastic reservation. View your Hotel Excellence! dashboard to confirm your eligibility. Fam-Tastic reservations are not bookable via the hotel directly or through Marriott's worldwide Customer Engagement Centers.

I tried to book the Fam-Tastic rate for this year and I received an error message that I “do not meet the necessary requirements”. I checked my HE! Dashboard and it shows that I am qualified, but it also still reflects CE 2023, and it is already 2024. What should I do?

Last July, CE 2023 and the associated Fam-Tastic benefits were extended through March 31, 2024. CE 2024 has now launched and is required for stays arriving after March 31 st . The current recertification cycle will end on March 31 st and then CE 2023 will be removed from your dashboard. If it is prior to April 1, 2024, and you are only qualified for CE 2024, you must either wait until April 1, 2024, to make a reservation, or ensure that you are also qualified for CE 2023.

I recently changed my name and I am unable to change it on my MI Partner Privileges profile. What should I do?

If you need to update your name on your MI Partner Privileges profile, please email [email protected] or contact Intermediary Partner Care at 1-800-831-3100, Option 5, or worldwide at 1-402-390-1651, and a specialist will assist you in updating your profile to reflect your name change. The name on your profile must match the name on your IATA/IATAN/CLIA card and/or photo identification and reservation at check-in. Name changes must include supporting legal documentation, signature, date, and account email address.

I emailed MI Partner Privileges to update my profile name, but when I booked a new Fam-Tastic reservation, the update did not reflect on my reservation. What should I do?

MI Partner Privileges profile name changes may take up to four hours to display the updated name when booking a new reservation. Please allow four hours before booking a new reservation on marriott.com/travelagents .

I changed the name on my MI Partner Privileges profile, but my new name has not updated on the Fam-Tastic reservation(s) that I made before my name change. What should I do?

The name, as it appears on your MI Partner Privileges profile, must match the name on your IATA/IATAN/CLIA card and/or photo identification and reservation at check-in. Please email [email protected] , or contact Intermediary Partner Care at 1-800-831-3100, Option 5, or worldwide at 1-402-390-1651 for assistance. They will connect you with the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line to change the name on your existing reservation(s).

How do I add/change special request(s) to my existing Fam-Tastic reservation?

Please contact one of the Customer Engagement Centers via http://www.marriott.com/help/global-phone-reservation-numbers.mi , and ask to be transferred to the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line and a specialist will help you add/change your special request(s).

I am having trouble booking additional room nights/cancelling my Fam-Tastic reservation. What do I do?

All cancellations or modifications to your Fam-Tastic reservation must be made after signing into Marriott’s dedicated Travel Agent website at www.marriott.com/travelagents .

  • Select “Access Fam-Tastic” from the “Hotel Excellence” menu option at the top of the page.
  • Click on “Travel Advisor Sign in or Register” and sign in with your email address and password.
  • Click on "Find & Reserve" located at the top of the page to the right of the Marriott Bonvoy logo.
  • Beneath the hotel search section, click on “Lookup Reservation”.
  • Enter your information in the “For a specific reservation” section.  Do not use the “For a list of your reservations” section, as this will take you out of the Hotel Excellence/Fam-Tastic signed in access.
  • Once you have located your reservation, you may proceed with your cancellation/modification request.

To ensure your cancellation or modification is reflected accurately on your Hotel Excellence! account, do not cancel or modify through your confirmation email link, your Marriott Bonvoy account, the Marriott Bonvoy app, or via the phone with reservations or the property. Cancellations or modifications made without being signed into the Travel Agent website will not be reflected back to your Hotel Excellence! account, therefore impacting your ability to make future Fam-Tastic reservations for the same date or at the same hotel.

If you need further assistance with a Fam-Tastic reservation, please contact one of the Customer Engagement Centers via http://www.marriott.com/help/global-phone-reservation-numbers.mi , and ask to be transferred to the Fam-Tastic Rate Assistance line and a specialist will assist you.

How can I change the arrival/departure dates on my Fam-Tastic reservation?

How do i change the rate for an existing reservation to the fam-tastic rate.

Visit www.marriott.com/travelagents to access the Fam-Tastic booking page. Check availability for the location of your preference at the Fam-Tastic rate. If you can book at the Fam-Tastic rate, you will need to cancel your original reservation.  Please make note of your original reservation’s cancellation policies.

My Hotel Excellence! Dashboard says “Restriction” for my Fam-Tastic status. What does this mean? Why can’t I access the Fam-Tastic rate booking page?

“Restriction” is the status of any advisor affiliated with an agency location that is not compliant with Marriott’s Ratio Policy .  Affiliated advisors are restricted from booking Marriott’s Fam-Tastic and Travel Agent rates. When imposing this restriction, Marriott communicates to the agency owner or senior executive.  Any questions related to this status should be directed to your agency.

What is Marriott’s Ratio Policy?

To ensure we are partnering with intermediaries that are also focused on driving profitable business to our hotels, Marriott utilizes a Ratio Policy. The full policy can be referenced here .

That’s where travel agent rates and discounts come into play. These exclusive offers are designed to provide travelers with significant savings and added perks that are not typically available to the general public.

In this article, we will delve into the world of travel agent rates and discounts, exploring the benefits they offer, ways to access them, tips for maximizing your savings, and common questions that often arise. So, grab your passport and get ready to unlock a whole new world of travel savings!

Overview of Travel Agent Rates and Discounts

Travel agent rates and discounts are special pricing arrangements that hotels, resorts, airlines, and other travel suppliers offer exclusively to travel agents and their clients. These rates are significantly lower than the retail rates available to the general public, allowing travelers to enjoy substantial savings on their vacations.

By working closely with travel agents, suppliers can fill empty rooms, seats, and other travel inventory, while travelers receive unbeatable prices and added benefits. It’s a win-win situation for both parties involved. Travelers can take advantage of reduced accommodation costs, exclusive add-ons, upgrades, and access to special packages, while suppliers can ensure their inventory is utilized efficiently.

Now that we have a clear understanding of what travel agent rates and discounts are, let’s dive into the benefits they offer.

Benefits of Travel Agent Rates

Traveling can be an exhilarating and transformative experience, but it often comes with a hefty price tag. This is where travel agent rates come into play, offering a multitude of benefits that can help you save money while enjoying a luxurious getaway. From lower accommodation costs to exclusive add-ons and upgrades, and access to special packages, let’s delve into the enticing advantages that await savvy travelers.

Tips for Maximizing Travel Agent Rates

When it comes to maximizing your travel agent rates, there are a few key strategies that can help you make the most of your savings. By following these tips, you can ensure that you are getting the best possible discounts on your accommodations and travel experiences.

Plan in Advance : One of the most effective ways to secure the best travel agent rates is to plan your trips in advance. By booking early, you can take advantage of early bird discounts and secure the best available rates. This is particularly important if you have specific travel dates in mind or if you are planning to visit a popular destination during peak travel seasons. By planning ahead, you can avoid last-minute price increases and ensure that you are able to secure the accommodations and packages that best fit your travel needs.

Be Flexible with Travel Dates : Another tip for maximizing your travel agent rates is to be flexible with your travel dates. By being open to traveling during off-peak seasons or on weekdays, you can often find significantly lower rates. Many hotels and travel suppliers offer special discounts and promotions for travelers who are willing to be flexible with their travel dates. By considering alternative travel periods, you can save a substantial amount of money without compromising on the quality of your travel experience.

Compare Rates and Packages : When it comes to getting the best travel agent rates, it’s important to compare rates and packages from different suppliers. While one supplier may offer a great discount on accommodations, another may have better deals on flights or activities. By taking the time to compare rates and packages, you can ensure that you are getting the best overall value for your money. Utilize online travel agent booking platforms that allow you to easily compare prices and offerings from different suppliers. This way, you can make an informed decision and secure the best possible rates for your travel plans.

Leverage Loyalty Programs : Many hotels and travel suppliers offer loyalty programs that provide additional benefits and discounts to frequent customers. If you frequently travel to the same destinations or stay at the same hotel chains, it can be worthwhile to join their loyalty programs. These programs often provide exclusive access to special rates, upgrades, and other perks. By leveraging loyalty programs, you can maximize your travel agent rates and enjoy additional savings on your trips.

By following these tips, you can ensure that you are maximizing your travel agent rates and getting the best possible discounts on your accommodations and travel experiences. Remember to plan in advance, be flexible with your travel dates, compare rates and packages, and leverage loyalty programs to make the most of your savings. Traveling doesn’t have to break the bank, and with the right strategies, you can enjoy incredible experiences while staying within your budget.

From popular tourist hotspots to off-the-beaten-path destinations, travel agents can unlock exclusive discounts and benefits for a variety of locations across the globe.

Can anyone book travel agent rates?

While travel agent rates were originally designed for those working in the travel industry, they are not limited to travel agents alone. Nowadays, many hotels, resorts, and airlines extend these discounted rates to a wider audience, allowing anyone to take advantage of the savings. Whether you are a travel professional, a frequent traveler, or simply someone looking for a great deal, you can book travel agent rates and enjoy the benefits they offer.

How much can I save with travel agent rates?

The amount you can save with travel agent rates varies depending on the destination, property, and time of year. These discounts can translate into significant savings, especially for longer stays or when traveling with a group. By accessing these exclusive rates, you can enjoy a luxury experience at a fraction of the cost.

To better understand the potential savings, let’s take a look at a hypothetical scenario. Imagine you are planning a week-long vacation to a popular beach destination. By becoming a travel agent or joining travel agent associations, you can tap into a world of discounted rates and benefits. Utilizing travel agent booking platforms and building relationships with travel suppliers further enhance your chances of getting the best deals. These strategies enable you to save significantly on your travel expenses, leaving you with more money to indulge in memorable experiences during your trip.

To maximize your savings, it is important to plan in advance and be flexible with your travel dates. This allows you to take advantage of the best rates and availability. Additionally, taking the time to compare rates and packages across different platforms ensures that you are getting the most value for your money. Lastly, leveraging loyalty programs can provide you with additional perks and savings.

While travel agent rates may not be available for all destinations, there are numerous options to choose from across the globe. Whether you’re dreaming of a tropical beach getaway or an adventurous mountain retreat, there is likely a travel agent rate waiting to be discovered.

It’s important to note that travel agent rates are not exclusive to travel agents alone. Anyone can book these rates, making them accessible to all travelers looking to save money on their journeys. Hyatt Travel Agent Rates: How Much Can You Save? 3

Hyatt Travel Agent Rates: How Advisors Save up to 50% at Hyatt

What you need to know about Hyatt Travel Agent Rates

In this article, we dig into Hyatt's Travel Agent Rates and see just how much a travel advisor can save by using these rates when booking their own travel.

In case you aren't familiar with Travel Agent Rates (often called familiarization rates or “fam” rates), they are discounted hotel rates that are only available to travel agents so they can check out a property and speak from first hand experience when recommending it to their clients.

Hyatt's Travel Agent rates are similar to those offered by other major hotel chains (including Marriott Fam-Tastic , Hilton , and IHG Travel Agent Programs), which allow registered travel agents to book discounted rates at Hyatt hotels and resorts across the globe.

Hyatt claims an eligible travel advisor rate will provide a discount of up to 50%, but we typically find them in the 10% to 30% range.  The rates and discounts vary by brand and are subject to availability .

Additional Perks for Travel Advisors

In addition to the discounted room rate, there are some additional perks Hyatt advertises for travel advisors.  However, many of these “benefits” are no different from what any World of Hyatt member would receive, like free breakfast at Hyatt Place”, so it is a bit of a stretch to position these as special perks for travel advisors.

  • Save up to 50% off the daily rate for eligible stays.
  • Free Wi-Fi in Hyatt hotels and resorts worldwide, and complimentary breakfast at participating Hyatt Place and Hyatt House hotels.
  • Work with an on-site planner to host industry groups with the Entertainment Set—a customizable package with special offerings including VIP treatment and multi-tour booking benefits.
  • Earn a 10% commission on your booking when you book with an eligible travel advisor rate (use chain code HY in the GDS).
  • Discover the World of Hyatt loyalty program—book commissionable rates for your clients while they earn points toward free nights, airline miles, and more.

Are Hyatt Travel Agent Rates a good deal?

As mentioned earlier, these rates are not offered at every hotel and the discounts range from no discount at all up to 50%.

Here are a couple of examples we found with some random searches at popular Hyatt properties.

How to Book These Rates

It's actually very easy to book these rates.  They don't require password access to a private webpage, you just have to enter the Travel Agent code “4469” in the “Corporate or Group Code” field on the booking page.

This is the same field you use when booking with a Hyatt Corporate Discount Code or a Hyatt Leverage Code .

You can either book from the main Hyatt website or the Hyatt Travel Agent booking site .

You will be asked for credentials when you check in, (either an IATAN, CLIA, or TIDS card), so this is not something you should try to “hack”.

How to find a travel agency

Accreditation.

Travel agencies aren't required to obtain licensing or certification, though recognized organizations accredit and certify members. Travelers can confirm a travel agency's accreditation by looking for the accrediting body's logo on a travel agency's website or brochure.

  • ASTA accreditation: ASTA (American Society of Travel Advisors) accreditation assures clients that the agency operates under ASTA's code of ethics and will communicate with clients about unexpected changes to travel plans.
  • IATA accreditation: IATA (International Air Transport Association) accreditation provides agencies with a Sales Agency Agreement and a TIDS number that authorizes sales of international and domestic airline tickets.
  • Unaccredited agencies: If considering an unaccredited travel agency, take into account that their lack of accreditation could mean they are inexperienced or have had service problems that caused a loss of accreditation.

Credentials

Credentials are similar to accreditation, though on an individual level. Some travel agents obtain certification through The Travel Institute, which confirms the agent's interpersonal skills and destination knowledge. These types of certifications ensure that travelers are working with an agent that has the necessary experience to anticipate travel issues and provide solutions.

  • Certified travel associate (CTA): A CTA is a professional who has a minimum of 18 months in the travel industry and has passed courses to enhance skills and service.
  • Certified travel counselor (CTC): A CTC has the skills of a CTA, advanced industry training and five years of industry experience.
  • Certified travel industry executive (CTIE): A CTIE is a travel industry professional who has management training within the travel agency.

Travel agencies charge fees for services provided to clients to account for time spent researching and booking travel arrangements. Keep in mind that a travel agent’s inside knowledge of travel-related discounts may make booking through an agency less expensive than self-booking over the internet.

  • Airline ticket procurement fee: Travel agencies charge an airline ticket procurement fee for purchasing tickets on behalf of the traveler.
  • Travel agency service fees: Other common travel agency fees include fees for booking hotels and rental cars and for time spent researching trips.
  • Itemization of costs and fees: While there is no law requiring travel agencies to provide an itemized breakdown of costs and fees, you can request this information to ensure fees are reasonable.

International travel planning

Planning a trip to another country is typically more complex than planning a domestic trip due to extra paperwork and the need to know details about the destination country. A trusted global travel agency can help manage details and paperwork on your behalf.

  • Destination-specific research or specialization: Some agents with certification from The Travel Institute are trained in region-specific bookings while others charge for time spent researching destinations.
  • Hotel and flight packages: Using a global travel agency to book international hotel and flight packages can cut costs even after agency fees are added. To check for savings, compare online price listings to prices provided by the agency.
  • Visa and passport requirements: Having visas and passports in order is vital when traveling to other countries, so confirm which documents are needed with the agency early in the trip-planning process.

Group travel planning

Planning a trip for a group can be challenging because some facilities cannot accommodate groups. Travel agencies find suitable venues and transportation for the entire group. A global travel agency can help you with international group vacations.

  • Large-group discounts: Travel agencies have access to discounts based on established relationships with hotels and airline companies to secure a great price for group bookings.
  • Transportation: A large group is not going to fit in a standard rental car. Confirm the travel agency is able to book a van or several cars to meet the group's transportation needs.
  • Itinerary details for the group: In addition to sleeping arrangements and transportation, eating out and visiting tourist attractions can be problematic for a group. Ask the travel agency to arrange the fine points of the group's trip in addition to handling the larger details.

Land and sea planning

Planning a vacation involves more than selecting a country and booking hotel and airfare. Hiring a travel agency can help make sure travelers enjoy every stop in their itinerary.

  • Add a cruise: Talk to your travel agency about adding some sea travel to any vacation. Different onboard accommodations and ports of call allow travelers to extend the reach of their trips.
  • Seamless transfers: Making the transfer from onshore accommodations to a cruise ship can eat up almost an entire day, but a travel agent takes care of the hassle by arranging travel to the port at the right time.
  • Planning excursions: Ask the travel agent to arrange desired shore excursions at the ship's ports of call that enrich other planned itinerary stops.

Types of travel agencies

Commercial travel agencies.

Commercial travel agencies cater to business travelers. These agencies specialize in tracking down deals for business travelers to help companies manage travel costs.

Online travel agencies

Travel agencies that exist only in cyberspace provide clients with the convenience of online booking and discounts that are available only to professional travel agencies. Some agencies offer both online booking and walk-in service for clients.

Niche travel agencies

Niche travel agencies provide clients with specialized knowledge of a region. This enhances the travel experience for clients by ensuring paperwork is in order and providing specific, often first-hand, knowledge of the area tourists are visiting.

Membership associations

Memberships associations give travelers access to the organization's travel planning services for the cost of an annual membership rather than charging per transaction. This type of agency offers the most benefit to frequent travelers.

Who uses travel agencies?

International travelers.

International travelers can cut the stress of planning trips to other countries when a global travel agency manages the details. This includes making sure each traveler has the proper paperwork and booking suitable travel accommodations.

Business travelers

Business travelers can take advantage of savings associated with discounts available only to travel agents. Some travel agencies also handle the detailed expense report paperwork required by the accounting departments of most companies.

Group travelers

Group travelers can save time when looking for accommodations that have room for the entire group by using a travel agency. Group bookings through an agent can also save you money.

Travel bargain seekers

Travel bargain seekers can discuss their travel budget with a travel agent. This is a way to determine what discounts and money-saving packages a travel agency can arrange.

Travel agencies FAQ

Most travel agencies don’t charge customers, meaning the only price you pay is the cost of your trip. Agents are typically paid commissions by the hotels or airlines. Some travel agents may charge service fees from $100 to $500, but that money is usually applied toward the cost of your trip if you complete travel arrangements through the agency.

To know if a travel agency is legit:

  • Review the agency’s website for a physical address and phone number.
  • Check for industry certifications and associations with professional organizations like the American Society of Travel Advisors.
  • Read reviews to learn about client experiences. Ask for a list of references.
  • Make sure the agent accepts credit cards.
  • Compare pricing to make sure cost isn’t too high or too low.

No, it’s generally free to use a travel agent. A travel agency may charge a service fee or a booking fee, but it’s common for this fee to apply toward the cost of your trip.

The four main types of travel agencies are:

  • Commercial travel agencies , which cater mainly to business travelers
  • Online travel agencies that help people plan their trips entirely online
  • Niche travel agencies , which specialize in arranging trips to specific areas
  • Membership associations that provide travel services as a benefit to members

Using a travel agent is a more personalized experience than booking online — and sometimes cheaper. Travel agents are experts who can find the best deals on flights , cruises, hotels and activities. Agents are often available 24/7 in case of problems. And there’s usually no extra cost to use one.

Yes, a travel agent can save you money, especially if you’re traveling internationally to unfamiliar territory or if you’re organizing a trip for a big group. In addition to finding you the best deal, a travel agent saves you time planning and researching — often at no cost for services.

Travel agencies:

  • Find the best deals on flights, hotels, cruises and activities for individuals, families, businesses and groups
  • Give clients personalized attention and advice for trip planning
  • Offer trip insurance
  • Save you time and stress
  • Are available 24/7 in case of a problem and advocate on your behalf

No, you don’t need to tip a travel agent. A great way to show appreciation is to refer friends, family members and co-workers. Some people choose to write a thank-you note and/or give a small gift.

Travel Advisers: When to Let a Professional Plan Your Trip

An illustration of a person sitting on a folded-out map with books, papers and coffee laid out around the area. That person is inside the head of a beige-colored person wearing a teal telephone headset, and drawings of the Eiffel Tower, a compass, a signpost, a jet plane, mountains and other travel imagery are all around the head.

By Julie Weed

Decades ago, your vacation most likely began with a visit to a travel agent, who relied on a combination of expertise and connections to find the best deals on plane tickets, hotels, tours and more. Since then, the internet has turned most of us into our own travel agents, and artificial intelligence software is making research and self-booking even easier. But for some trips, that special insider knowledge can still make a big difference.

So when should you hire a professional, and how does it all work? Here are some tips.

Why should I consider a travel adviser?

It’s easy for a traveler to do the research for a standard trip, said Chris Anderson, a professor at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration, “so they should look for a specialist for the type of tour they are looking for, say a bike trip in Ireland, who can really add value.”

The insider knowledge offered by a travel adviser can add the most value to trips that have multicity itineraries, involve a wide age range of travelers , are very significant (like an anniversary vacation) or are to destinations you are unfamiliar with, said Gary R. Johnson, who has run the travel agency Woodside Travel in Seattle for nearly 30 years. An adviser could help you decide, for instance, in which order to visit European cities based on local events and transportation options.

What can an adviser give me that a booking site can’t?

Travel advisers can help you research the best destinations, lodging, or activities for your particular group and travel goals, offering up specific advice that might be hard or time-consuming to find yourself. Those specializing in cruises might know which cabin to choose if you are prone to seasickness, while a safari planner could help you decide which park would be best for bird-watching or seeing specific animals, like rhinos.

Travel advisers typically have relationships with tour companies, hotels and cruise lines, sometimes through networks. Those connections can allow advisers to offer extra perks such as late checkout, free breakfast, airport transfers, a welcome basket or a credit to spend on a cruise ship.

“A good travel agent will be a better steward of your travel budget than you are,” said Guy Rubin, managing director of Imperial Tours , which arranges travel in China.

When bad weather or other circumstances disrupt your itinerary, travel advisers often have direct lines of communication with providers and can do the work of rebooking and changing plans, saving you time and stress.

OK, let’s say I need help. How do I find an adviser?

Networks like the American Society of Travel Advisors and Travel Leaders have websites that can help you start your search for a travel adviser by answering a few questions about your desired trip. Once you have a handful to choose from, get on the phone with them to talk about what they might do for you, how they charge and the level of service you can expect. Special trips can cost thousands of dollars, so it’s worth investing time up front, Mr. Rubin said.

Make sure to read over the travel agent’s reviews and any user-generated social content that mentions them, Dr. Anderson said. “If there is no external validation, that’s a red flag.”

How do advisers get paid, and how much will it cost me?

Advisers receive commission from suppliers, typically 10 to 15 percent of the price, when selling cruises, lodging and tours. They also sometimes charge travelers a planning fee, from a few hundred dollars, which may be credited to the final bill if the booking is completed, all the way up to tens of thousands of dollars annually for a luxury concierge travel planner they can call on all year. Mr. Johnson said that he charges a planning fee the first time he works with customers. If they return for other trips, he waives the fee.

Advisers may be tempted to sell you something that will earn them a higher commission, Dr. Anderson said. But, he points out, the same is true for the large online services, which promote hotels that pay them larger commissions. Travelers can ask advisers about specific commissions they receive or how they are affiliated with the products they are recommending, he said.

Sometimes a local tour company will package transportation, lodging and experiences for an adviser, who tacks on a percentage before passing it along to a client. But a bill that is not itemized can make it harder to make trade-offs — between a more expensive hotel and a special experience, for example. If pricing transparency is important to you, discuss it with the adviser up front.

How are A.I. and other technologies affecting travel advisers?

While new technologies are allowing do-it-yourselfers to create their own itineraries online based on individual preferences, and to type questions directly into travel websites, advisers are also taking advantage of those technologies to improve their services. Joan Roca, chief executive of the upscale travel planning company Essentialist said his team “uses technology to enhance the human touch,” employing artificial intelligence to choose options from a database of travel offerings selected by a human team. If a couple wants to take an after-dinner stroll, for example, Essentialist’s app will offer up ideas of where to go, based on what part of the city the travelers are in and conversations they’ve had with their travel adviser.

If you’ve planned a vacation before, you know firsthand how stressful the planning process can be. Between booking hotels, flights and excursions, planning a vacation can feel like a full-time job. American travelers spent an average of 8 hours and 44 minutes reviewing travel content and resources ahead of their trips and read up to a whopping 277 pages of information on average, according to a 2023 survey from Expedia Group and Luth Research .

The time commitment behind planning a vacation could be one of the factors driving the 14 percent year-over-year increase in travelers who are likely to use a travel advisor, as reported by the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA) . Working with a travel agent could save you time and money when planning a complex vacation, but alternatives like online travel agencies, and credit card concierge services could be more affordable. So which option is better — doing your own legwork and booking trips online or hiring a travel agent?

What travel agents do

Travel agents help plan and book travel for vacations, special events or group trips, but their jobs have evolved over the years, particularly in the post-pandemic world.

“In the past, travel agents were very transactional — able to book your flights, hotels, and tours. While that is still a service we provide, in a post-pandemic world, travelers are looking for more,” says Annie Jones, travel advisor and owner of Telos Travel , “They want to think less, have options personalized to their interests, and experience destinations in a more authentic way.”

These days, travel agents advise on multiple aspects of a trip to create a bespoke travel experience. Their role can include:

  • Regional tours and experiences
  • Cultural etiquette
  • Developing a custom itinerary
  • Finding exclusive deals, amenities and offerings
  • Handling emergencies and changes
  • Organizing travel insurance
  • Booking transportation (airfare and ground transportation)
  • Making restaurant reservations
  • Booking hotels, cruises and excursions
  • Arranging necessary travel documents and visas

To reflect the expansions on a travel agent’s role, the American Society of Travel Advisors officially transitioned the title to “travel advisor” in 2018. Some of the best travel advisors even earn certifications and attend trainings to continue their education and stay on top of industry changes.

Do you have to pay a travel agent?

The cost of using a travel agent varies wildly, since there are different types of travel agents and travel advisors. In the past, many travel agents’ services were free, as they earned a commission off the trips they booked paid out by the airlines and hotels. Some still are.

However, after the pandemic, when many businesses in the travel industry struggled to recover (along with the changing landscape of travel agents in general) kickbacks from these vendors became less common. According to a survey by Travel Weekly , 71 percent of travel agencies in 2023 charged some form of service fee for working with them. These days, there are three main ways travel agents get paid:

  • Flat rate fee
  • Hourly rate

Travel agents may charge a percentage ranging from five percent to 15 percent of the trip’s cost. Others may charge a flat rate, anywhere from $100-$500 on average. Some advisors charge an hourly rate to research, plan or arrange your trip. Agents may also ask for a deposit that’s returned once you take your trip or goes towards the total cost.

Although hiring a travel advisor might seem expensive, it could potentially save you money. Paying a travel agent $200 to save you $400 on airfare or obtain a cruise upgrade worth $600 means you’re still coming out on top.

“I think one of the biggest misconceptions out there is that it’s more expensive to book through a travel advisor,” Jones shares. “While most advisors do charge professional service fees, just like you would to a financial planner or lawyer, the actual cost of your trip is no different than if you were to book it on your own.”

To better understand the cost of working with a travel agent, ask about their fee structure to determine if their price feels fair for your budget.

Are travel agents influenced by commissions?

That depends on how your travel agent gets paid. Even though it’s declined in recent years, many travel agents still collect at least part of their earnings from commissions paid by hotels and other travel products.

When there’s a commision tied to each travel booking, travel agents benefit monetarily from what you buy which makes it hard to be unbiased. As such, those commissions will likely influence which vacation packages and options you’re provided. However, that’s not to say that there aren’t travel agents who put your preferences and must-sees at the forefront of their planning process.

Money tip: You may find less of a hard sell on certain travel packages if your travel agent charges a flat fee or a percentage of your total trip. But this could mean a higher out-of-pocket cost. Consider their fee structure and how your agent approaches travel planning as you decide who to work with.

Can a credit card concierge replace a travel agent?

The short answer is… sort of. Many of the best travel credit cards offer concierge services that help cardholders organize travel, accommodations and tours, and they even help when emergencies or travel problems arise. But not to the extent a travel agent might go to.

“Many of my clients are surprised I offer 24/7 support while they are traveling,” says Jones. “If they face an unexpected challenge, I’m there to help resolve the problem or answer their question so they can just focus on enjoying their vacation.”

Complimentary concierge services can take the place of a travel agent on some aspects of your trip. While concierges can help you cross small items off your to-do list, they typically won’t plan a full trip itinerary for you.

  • For example, The Platinum Card® from American Express offers Platinum Card Concierge , through which their agents help you purchase event tickets, make dining or spa reservations and handle general travel inquiries.
  • Cardholders of the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card now have free access to PRIOR , a program providing insider destination advice and curated experiences.
  • Those with Chase Sapphire Reserve® can use the Visa Infinite Concierge, which can help reserve sports events, dining or even Broadway tickets.

In some cases, concierge benefits seem vague, so it’s worth calling or emailing to ask if they can help with your specific issue or need. However, in most circumstances, they probably won’t be able to plan and book an entire curated vacation for you.

If you’re booking travel on your own and simply want to lighten the load, then concierge services might be the way to go. However, if you want a fully customized itinerary without the legwork and within budget then a travel agent is your best bet.

Should you use a travel agent?

The decision to use a travel agent depends on a few factors and is closely intertwined with your preferences, budget and type of trip.

Travel advisors are particularly helpful when planning complex travel. Their connections and expertise come in handy for corporate, group, luxury or special-occasion travel, which could make it worth their fee. Advisors are also helpful when you’re not experienced with vacation planning or have time commitments preventing you from planning. In those cases, having a travel advisor could be a win.

Ask yourself a few questions to determine if it’s the right choice for you.

  • Does this trip require a lot of planning (i.e. corporate, group, anniversary or highly-specific travel)?
  • Are you looking for unique experiences, tours or upgrades?
  • Are you experienced in booking your own travel or designing your own vacation itinerary?
  • Do you have the time to dedicate to travel planning?
  • Are you visiting a location and culture you feel comfortable navigating on your own?

For less complex travel where you’re on a tight budget, you might consider using resources already at your disposal like the credit card concierge service on an existing credit card or booking through an online travel agency (OTA) like Expedia or Kayak.

Travel advisors offer their experience, expertise and connections to take the stress out of planning a vacation. When you want to spend less time planning, get access to exclusive experiences, or need someone to create a vacation you couldn’t imagine planning on your own, a travel agent could save the day.

Pros of using a travel agent

Still not sure whether a travel agent would be worth the cost? Some additional advantages of using a travel agent as opposed to planning your trip yourself include:

  • Saving money . According to a survey by Condor Ferries, travel agencies can save customers an average of $452 per trip through promotions and deals from suppliers that average travelers don’t have access to.
  • Expert planning on important trips. Whether it’s corporate travel, a honeymoon or a 50th anniversary trip, you’ll want it to be impeccably planned.
  • Help with trip disruptions. Many travel agents offer 24/7 support before, during and after your trip to help with any challenges or changes that arise.
  • Upgrades, benefits and extras . Travel agents have connections the general public doesn’t. Their connections and partnerships may get you hotel upgrades, VIP treatment, connecting rooms, free breakfast or other perks.
  • Curated experiences . A destination expert might find you experiences you never have discovered on your own, like an insider, after-hours visit to Cambodian ruins or a vintage car rental in Italy.
  • Extensive vacations . You need expert destination knowledge to plan a cruise to Antarctica, a hiking trip to Bhutan or a two-month-long Galapagos expedition. If you want all the bells and whistles and money is no object, a travel agent may be able to get you into the most coveted hotels, tours and spots.
  • You’re a beginner or don’t have time . Beginners planning a DIY vacation can easily get overwhelmed. The time it takes to plan a trip can also take time away from your other responsibilities. Travel agents make the process easy.

Using a travel agent doesn’t mean you’ll get a vacation that’s just like everyone else’s. Travel agents use the details of your personal preferences, budget and needs to customize your experience. Some of them even specialize in particular destinations or have relationships with hotels and tour guides which could help you get room upgrades, better rates or VIP experiences.

“These relationships not only allow for special treatment, but upgrades are nice, right? After all, you can’t VIP yourself! In addition to perks, these relationships also allow us to have high-level contacts in the event something should go wrong or a client needs assistance… These are things you are not going to get if you DIY.” — Mandy Pullin Luxury travel advisor of six years with DPP Travel

Some travel advisors have even developed specific travel niches.

“I’m seeing advisors specialize more than they did in the past,” explains Adeline Kuroki, a travel advisor and owner of Savor & Soak Travel Co. “I think this is great for travelers… For example, some advisors will specialize in luxury travel, and make it their mission to visit and understand the pros and cons of luxury resorts all over the world.”

When you have an advisor who’s an expert on one location, you get more curated experiences too. Kuroki specializes in travel to Japan and helps clients navigate the complexities of booking in such a popular destination.

“I can quickly tell them which experiences need to be booked well in advance to avoid missing out, and which can be decided on closer to their travel dates. And as Japan becomes an increasingly popular tourist destination, I’m able to recommend and book more off-the-beaten-path locations that offer a lot of the same sights and experiences as more well-known places.”.

So even with developments in online bookings and credit card concierge services, travel advisors are irreplaceable when it comes to designing a personalized itinerary in a destination with which you’re unfamiliar.

Cons of using a travel agent

While there are many benefits to using a travel agent, there are also disadvantages to consider. Some of those include:

  • Not redeeming points or miles. If you have credit card points or airline miles to cash in, a travel agent might not be the best fit since they typically can’t help you redeem them for the trips they plan. However, niche advisors can best advise you on booking using your points and miles or use your stash to book for you.
  • Less flexibility to make updates. Once your travel agent locks in reservations, it can be difficult to change things since you may have put down a deposit.
  • Added layer of communication. For your travel agent to plan a vacation you’ll enjoy, you have to clue them in on your likes and dislikes, budget, preferences, needs and more. And when you need to make adjustments, you’ll have to go through them.
  • Missing out on planning your own trip. Planning your own trip is exciting for some folks. Plus, you can build the exact type of experience you want at a price point that’s comfortable for you.
  • Fees and price. Travel agents can save you money sometimes, but it comes at a cost that might not fit into your budget. Some agents charge high fees or percentages of the total vacation cost.
  • Finding the right agent. It can take time to find the right travel agent, advisor or expert. If it takes too long, DIY travel might be more convenient.

Do you earn rewards on travel booked by an agent?

You might be hard-pressed to find a travel advisor where you earn rewards by booking through them as opposed to your credit card’s travel portal . However, it’s worth noting that the merchant code for travel agents is often “travel”, which means the travel agent fees you pay through a qualifying rewards credit card could be eligible for bonus points if your card offers boosted rewards on the travel category.

Certain travel benefits still work for you even if a travel agent books your trip. For example, you’ll get lounge access if your credit card offers it regardless of who booked your airfare, which airline or class you’re flying. As long as you use the appropriate card to pay for the trip, it shouldn’t matter if you or the travel agent physically made the purchase.

You might also earn frequent flyer miles through an airline’s loyalty program if your travel agent can include your frequent flyer number on your reservation. You’ll also still have your airline elite status recognized if a travel agent booked your airfare for you, but you may or may not get hotel loyalty brand points. The same goes for recognition of your hotel elite status . It’s best to discuss this directly with your agent or call the hotel to confirm, as each case may be different.

Keep in mind: American Airlines announced in February 2024 it plans to limit which tickets purchased via third parties are eligible to earn AAdvantage frequent flyer miles. The details were still vague at the time of publishing, but it could mean that your ticket purchased by a travel agent would still earn miles – assuming they purchase through a qualifying site or directly on American's site – but if you go the DIY route for your trip and purchase online through a third-party site, you may not earn miles at all.

The bottom line

Choosing to use a travel agent or book vacations online ultimately depends on your personal preferences, budget and the type of trip you’re planning. Opting for online booking might be quicker and more cost-effective, but the personal touch and stress-free approach provided by a travel agent can’t be overlooked.

The days where travel agents just booked your flight and hotel are long gone. Today, they offer bespoke itineraries tailored to your interests and budget while specializing in certain destinations or forms of travel. Taking the time to find and build a relationship with a reliable travel agent could save you money on your next trip even if there’s a fee involved. But it’s still important to weigh the pros and cons to know if hiring a travel agent is right for you.

Tips For Independent Travel Agents On Tax Filing

T here are several tax filing considerations that you as an independent travel agency need to keep in mind. You are considered self-employed, which means you must handle your own taxes, which is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind since, in contrast to conventional workers, you are.

In order to maximize their tax savings and file their taxes, independent contractors like travel agents may run into problems. When selling hotel reservations, vacation packages, and other travel-related goods, many travel agents operate on a project-basis and make money. Because of the possibility of seasonal employment, revenue fluctuations may sometimes occur. The 1099 tax rate and form (and/or a  w2 template  if you find yourself working as an employee with any business), quarterly tax calculator, and self-employment tax calculator are thus essential tools that may assist you in making wise tax choices.

For independent travel agencies paying taxes, consider these suggestions:

1. Learn the tax regulations

In order to file taxes as an independent travel agency, you must first get familiar with the tax regulations that relate to your industry. Read the IRS publication on small enterprises and self-employed persons to learn how to record your income, deductions, and credits.

For independent travel brokers, it’s important to remember the following tax regulations:

-Unless you request an extension, you must submit your yearly tax return by April 15th and pay any taxes that are required.

– You are required to record all revenue you get from your travel agency, including 1099-style payments.

– Self-employment taxes, also known as Social Security and Medicare taxes, are due by self-employed people and now represent 15.3% of their net income. These taxes cover both the employer and employee components of Social Security and Medicare.

2. Recurring business costs should be monitored

Being a self-employed travel agent has several advantages, including the ability to deduct numerous company expenditures from taxable income, which may reduce your tax burden. You may write off certain costs, such as:

– Costs associated with running an office, such as rent, utilities, and supplies.

– Costs associated with traveling, such as lodging and rental vehicles.

– Marketing expenditures, including web hosting and advertising.

– The cost of your phone, camera, and computer equipment.

Maintaining precise records of all your company expenditures is crucial to ensure you don’t overlook any deductible costs. This is especially important because these agencies are exempt from some taxes, and you can  learn more about the tour operators margin scheme  if you live in Britain, for example. You may maintain a record of your expenditures in a spreadsheet or notepad, or you can use accounting software to manage your costs automatically.

3. Calculate the tax rate on your 1099 form

You get 1099 forms from your customers when you work as a self-employed travel agent, which implies that taxes are not deducted from your salary. Taxes on your income must be paid by you instead. Using a 1099 tax rate calculator is a fantastic idea to make sure you are allocating the right amount of money for taxes.

Based on your income and deductible costs, the calculator will help you establish your tax obligation. In order to assist you avoid underpayment penalties, it will also figure out the projected tax owed for each quarter.

4. Calculate the self-employment taxes

The self-employment taxes, which include Social Security and Medicare taxes, must be paid by self-employed people, as was previously noted. Use a self-employment tax calculator to get a rough idea of your taxes for being self-employed.

With the help of the tool, you can determine how much money you’ll need to put aside for self-employment taxes and an estimate of your tax liabilities depending on your net income. Remember that the self-employment tax rate is presently 15.3%, which includes 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.

5. Maintain your tax payments on time each quarter

Quarterly anticipated tax payments are necessary if you anticipate owing more than $1,000 in taxes for the whole year. Penalties and interest fees may be assessed if these payments are not made.

Using a quarterly tax calculator to calculate your estimated tax bill for each quarter is crucial to ensuring that you pay your taxes on time and avoiding underpayment penalties. When the time comes to submit your taxes, this will help you prevent any surprises.

For independent travel brokers, handling taxes may be a huge hassle. But you can reduce the stress and increase your tax savings by being informed with tax laws, keeping track of your company spending, utilizing a 1099 tax rate calculator, calculating self-employment taxes, finding tax deductions and staying on top of quarterly tax payments. You can make sure you are remaining in compliance and choosing wisely when it comes to taxes for your travel company by heeding the advice in this guide.

Overview of Travel Insurance Coverage

What does travel insurance cover, what does credit card travel insurance cover, what travel insurance coverage do you need to pay more for, choosing the right travel insurance, what does travel insurance cover frequently asked questions, understanding what travel insurance covers.

The information for the following product(s) has been collected independently by Business Insider: Chase Freedom Flex℠. The details for these products have not been reviewed or provided by the issuer.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex, for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

Coverage for pandemics vary from policy to policy. Some travel insurance companies have specific provisions for pandemic-related cancellations, while others may exclude them entirely.

Sports injuries are often covered under travel insurance, but high-risk or adventure sports might require additional coverage or a special policy.

Travel advisories have different effects on your travel insurance depending on your policy. Traveling to a country already under travel advisory may invalidate your coverage, but if you're already traveling when a travel advisory is announced, you may be covered.

Travel insurance usually covers the cost of emergency medical evacuations to the nearest suitable medical facility, and sometimes back to your home country, if necessary.

Many travel insurance policies provide coverage for the cost of replacing lost or stolen passports during a trip.

Travel is so expensive post-pandemic. But I don’t want to give up the idea of an annual vacation. How can I keep costs down? —Tripping Out Over Expenses

Experts predict that this year will be the busiest ever for travel since before the pandemic. And for many, it’s already feeling like it might be the priciest. According to NerdWallet’s February 2024 travel inflation report , the cost of hotels, entertainment, and dining out are rising, with overall travel expenses for the past 12 months up 3.1 percent through January 2024 compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Hotels will be a big vacation investment. Lodging rates increased 5.2 percent between December 2023 and January 2024 alone. And traveler beware: the average daily hotel rate is projected to grow nearly 5 percent more in the next year, according to hotel-commerce platform SiteMinder . There’s been little respite from room rates hovering near all-time highs at properties across the U.S. this winter, and staff shortages will likely mean continued high prices but fewer services. You’re getting gauged even more for dining out: in January, prices for restaurant meals were 25.6 percent higher than the same month four years ago.

The coast of Baja Sur, Mexico, near Cabos San Lucas, is famous for its numerous resort properties, like this oceanfront one.

There is some good news: airfare—on domestic routes in particular—is predicted to drop 16 percent this year, according to Kayak. The travel-research engine estimates it will cost $461 on average to fly in the U.S. I recently booked a round-trip, direct flight from Denver to Newark, New Jersey, in April on United for a very reasonable $227. That’s about half of what I was paying for the same flight in April 2018.

That said, the overseas flights I’ve booked for spring and summer travel have given me serious sticker shock. International airfare departing from the U.S. is up 10 percent compared with 2023, according to Kayak . In the past, I’ve scored direct flights from Denver to Los Cabos, Mexico , for under $400; a flight for late March this year was $1,200. Similarly, a late-May flight from Denver to Majorca, Spain, was priced at over $3,000, when in the past I’ve seen it for as low as $600.

Some experts are optimistic that additional flights and routes , especially those from upstart low-cost carriers like Breeze Airways and Norse Atlantic Airways, will help lower international fares, but I’ll believe it when I see it. For now your best strategy is to book overseas fares early. According to Kayak, eight months is the sweet spot and can save you between 8 and 18 percent.

If you’re on a budget but still want to go big in some fashion, don’t despair; you can still have an affordable annual vacation if you’re willing to be flexible on timing, strategic about choosing a destination, and plan ahead. Here are some of my tricks, plus tips from industry experts on how to make that happen.

1. Travel in the Shoulder Season

A waterfall surrounded by lush green trees and plants is a hiker's dream in Costa Rica.

Shoulder seasons are periods when destinations see fewer tourists but aren’t closed for the off-season. The perks are fewer crowds and often great deals on hotels and flights, but on the flip side, shops and restaurants may be shuttered or have limited hours. Weather can also be a gamble. In Mexico , for example, September and October are the slowest months of the year for tourism; they’re also the wettest, and the time tropical storms are most likely to hit both coasts, says Zach Rabinor, founder of Journey Mexico.

Don’t dismiss destinations during a rainy season, though. In Costa Rica , you can save 30 to 40 percent between August and November and enjoy deserted beaches and lush rainforests, says Javier Echecopar, cofounder of Journey Costa Rica. “Those months are considered rainy, but usually with clear mornings followed by afternoon showers,” he says, adding that on the Caribbean side of the country, the coast tends to be very clear during those months, a result of microclimates.

If you’re seeking value above all else, you may need to skip bucket-list destinations this year, even during the slow seasons. I booked a trip to Rome in March, and while streets and major attractions were quieter, prices weren’t cheaper for my flight, hotels, or restaurant meals.

Jenna Swan, a travel agent with Embark Beyond, says you’ll find more value visiting less iconic cities during shoulder season. “A room in Paris could easily cost two or three times the amount of a room in Madrid,” she told me.

2. Pay Attention to the Extra Costs of Travel

I used to be quick to jump on a cheap airfare or hotel rate without considering the bigger picture. When choosing between a 6 A.M. flight priced at $450 versus a 10 A.M. priced at $500, I’d book the seemingly more affordable option. What I didn’t factor in was that getting to the airport would tack on extra fees: the $10 bus route I typically take doesn’t run that early, which meant I’d have to pay upward of $100 for an Uber, or drive and fork over as much as $50 a day for airport parking.

Additionally, major airlines are piling on more fees, for everything from checked bags to select seats, and airline websites often use design strategies known as dark patterns used to push consumers to buy extras (like a rental car or trip insurance) during their purchase.

3. Book an All-Inclusive Vacation

A family of four on a catamaran cruises away from the Caribbean shoreline of Mexico and into deeper turquoise waters.

Once associated with budget travelers and bottomless drinks, the all-inclusive-resort model has gone upscale, with properties that feature Michelin-star restaurants, fine wines, and privately guided activities. The initial price tag can seem spendy, but when you factor in everything, you get incredible value.

And all-inclusive stays aren’t just for beach holidays. Package-vacation pioneer Club Med now offers properties in Quebec and the Alps. A family of four booking Club Med’s five-night ski getaway in Charlevoix, Canada, can save upward of $7,000 compared to a plan-it-yourself ski vacation in Aspen, Colorado—even after factoring in airfare.

A woman sits in the sauna at Club Med Quebec Charlevoix in Canada, looking out at the Saint Lawrence River.

4. Use a Travel Agent

As a seasoned traveler, I used to think a travel agent would be of no use for me. I now view these professionals as travel wizards. They have industry connections that translate to free room upgrades and special perks, like resort credits, complimentary breakfast, and occasionally other amenities such as a bottle of wine waiting in the room, free airport transfers, and VIP access to museums and adventure sites. If anything goes wrong, they’re on call to help. And they know how to score great deals. When I reached out to a travel agent about the exorbitant Majorca flight, he was able to bring the cost down to $1,753—almost half of what I was looking at spending—by mixing airlines and connections.

A turquoise cove of Majorca, Spain, where a few swimmers are enjoying a dip.

5. Check the Exchange Rate—and Head to Where It’s Most Beneficial

Last summer I traveled to Croatia, not realizing the country had embraced the euro. When I visited in 2020, the dollar’s strength against the kuna made Croatia feel like an economic destination. But now it’s just as pricey as vacationing in France or Italy.

A good exchange rate gives you extra buying power to maximize your travel experience (think: more activities and spectacular meals). In Canada, given the strength of the U.S. dollar, everything is essentially 30 percent off for Americans; in Australia, around 35 percent. Asian countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia, and South America nations like Colombia and Argentina, are also excellent places to stretch your dollar.

6. Let New Flight Routes Dictate Your Destination

An exterior shot of the new international airport in Tulum, Mexico, which opened in December 1, 2023.

Low-cost carriers offer some of their lowest prices when launching new routes. Frontier, for example, has promoted fares as low as $19 in the days following the announcement of new routes. And even after promotional fares disappear, having a new airline on a route adds competition that tends to nudge prices down. Many major airlines are also launching new routes this year. American, for example, will begin flying to the new airport in Tulum, Mexico, this month. Follow travel sites like Skift and the Points Guy, which keep up with this information.

7. Reconsider Hostels. Many Are New and Hip.

Yes, the grungy backpacker hotels of your post-college days still exist, but there’s also a crop of clean, budget-friendly hostel chains attracting crowds. Check out A&O , Freehand (which describes itself as “a collection of hotels that combine the social culture of a hostel”), and Generator . According to Oliver Winter, founder of A&O, the largest hostel brand in Europe, nearly 28 percent of guests are between the ages of 25 and 34. Boutique hostels often offer private rooms with an en suite bathroom, bunk rooms to accommodate families or groups of friends, and a place to make meals so you’re not forced to fritter away your budget dining out. I’ve stayed in a four-bed bungalow bunk room at the Freehand Miami with friends, and it felt as stylish and immaculate as a boutique hotel, plus, the bar, Broken Shaker, makes some of the best drinks in the city.

8. Save on Meals (but Still Eat Your Heart Out)

A hand holds up a panino filled with prosciutto and arugula. Behind it is Florence, Italy, and the Arno River.

I always try to book a hotel room that includes breakfast in the rate. My strategy: eat a hearty, late breakfast and then pocket a muffin and a banana for a snack later on that can tide me over until an early dinner.

Taking advantage of local street-food scenes can also save you heaps. A&O’s Winter says that Florence, Italy, is a little-known street-food city (though not full of food trucks, as Americans might imagine, but shops that sell various hot and cold sandwiches and beverages you can enjoy on the street). He likes Da’ Vinattieri , close to the National Museum of Bargello.

The author wearing ski gear and a helmet atop a stunning alpine-scape in Hinterglemm, Austria.

For the past 15 years, Outside travel-advice columnist  Jen Murphy has gone on a weeklong European ski vacation with friends that typically costs less than a long weekend of skiing in the U.S. She is a huge fan of off-season and shoulder-season travel and thinks the term “rainy season” should be changed to “green season.”

Moscow Hotel & Travel Guide

Moscow, the entrancing capital of Russia, is a hub of science, culture, and education. Lingering monuments from the USSR era lend a fascinating glimpse into Russia's Soviet history, while remnants of its imperial past hearken back to the days of the tsars. Book yourself on one of many flights to Moscow , take your pick of the Moscow hotels, and prepare to be amazed by this dynamic and alluring city.

Out and About in Moscow

No trip to Moscow would be complete without a stop in the legendary Red Square. Gaze up at the candy-striped spires of St. Basil's Cathedral and stop by to take a picture of Lenin's Mausoleum. Visit the numerous museums and cathedrals within the red walls of the Kremlin, and even peek at the presidential palace. If you're in an artistic mood, the Tretyakov Gallery houses the finest collection of Russian art in the world, and the Bolshoi Theatre is renowned for its superlative ballet and opera. Even traveling between attractions and hotels in Moscow is an experience: The exceptionally beautiful and efficient metro is famous worldwide.

Eating and Drinking

You can find dining options for any budget along the Arbat, one of the most famous streets in the city. There are cuisines for any taste, but if it's traditional Russian food you're seeking, be sure to try some pelmeni (a type of dumpling), borscht (beet soup), or a shashlik (a Russian kebab). Blini, a sort of thin pancake, can be ordered with sweet or savory fillings and is a staple of the local cuisine. As for drinks, it isn't all vodka! Tea is one of the most common beverages, and you should also take the opportunity to try kvas, a fermented drink made from black or rye bread. Ready for your Russian adventure? Travelocity can help you find cheap hotels in Moscow and all the best Moscow vacation packages so you have more time to read up on all the great Russian literature before your trip.

A positive market reaction to the news that, while US interest rates are staying where they are for now, we can expect three cuts and cheaper US borrowing costs this year.

Good news from a UK perspective - the pound is up against the dollar following the announcement from the US central bank, known as the Fed.

One pound buys $1.2774, a high not seen since Thursday last week. It means the cost of buying US goods, like imports of oil and gas, is slightly cheaper than this morning.

High interest rates tend to be good for the strength of a country's currency as they encourage overseas investment.

With rate cuts on the cards the dollar weakened, allowing sterling to make gains.

There was no holding back stock performance as shares in the 500 most valuable companies listed on US stock exchanges - the S&P 500 index rose 0.7% and hit a new high.

Elsewhere, the price of oil ticked down as the day wore on after it this morning reached a high not seen since October, $87 a barrel. By evening a barrel of the benchmark Brent crude oil cost $86.

Britons got their clearest hint yet about the answer in a speech by shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves last night.

In a lecture in the City, she committed to sticking with the government's fiscal rules which restrict borrowing.

She said Labour would abide by the rule that debt must be on course to fall as a percentage of GDP within five years.

It's a rolling five-year period - so debt doesn't actually have to fall, just be forecast to.

The rule has been criticised as the current chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, has met it by presuming the 5p fuel duty freeze will end - something that's not seen as politically likely.

On Labour's decision, deputy political editor Sam Coates said: "This is hugely important because it will significantly constrain the amount of money that Labour can borrow after an election, dramatically narrowing the options for higher spending - which some on the Labour left think is worrying."

By Sarah Taaffe-Maguire , business reporter

The US central bank has again opted to hold its base interest rate but paved the way for three cuts this year which would bring down the cost of borrowing 0.75 percentage points in 2024.

The announcement means the Federal Reserve, also known as the Fed, has kept its core interest rate range steady between 5.25 to 5.5% (unlike in the UK, the US rates are a range, rather than a single percentage, because the Fed does not set a specific figure).

The rates-setting body here in the UK, the Bank of England, today came to be in a very similar position to the Fed; official data on the rate of price rises show inflation is down to 3.4%.

Now the UK has joined the US in facing reduced inflation - it's no longer drastically above the monetary policy bodies' 2% target.

Both have kept interest rates high and have the eyes of mortgage holders, market analysts and politicians on them, with the likelihood of a cut constantly being assessed.

The Bank of England will make its next interest rate decision at midday tomorrow.

Economic observers think it will do the same as the Fed and keep rates. They're set to remain at 5.25%.

If you're looking to book a winter break, tomorrow morning could be the best time to do it.

EasyJet is releasing millions of flights for 1 December 2024 until 2 March 2025.

It told the Sky News Money blog these flights will go up online by 9am tomorrow - although they could be released earlier.

So why book now?

Consumer expert Martin Lewis explains that because easyJet uses demand pricing, flights are cheapest when demand is lowest - so the best time to book is the minute the flights are released.

It does mean you may spend your morning refreshing the easyJet website, of course...

Often when we talk about statistics like inflation they have a tendency to sound rather dry and boring. After all, data is an abstraction, an aggregation of numbers which often seems quite disconnected with our everyday lives.

But prices are ultimately an incredibly important way of measuring what's going on in the economy. They are the critical point where supply and demand meet - where sellers learn how much buyers are willing to pay for an item.

And there's no better place to see this embodied than at an auction. These are the places where, in the most literal of senses, "price discovery", as economists call it, takes place.

So it was no coincidence that we visited Grimsby Fish Market, one of the most important fish auction houses in the country, this morning to coincide with the release of the latest UK inflation figures.

In the space of about 20 minutes, the market conducts a series of auctions, with buyers crowded round crates of haddock, cod, halibut and so on, and the seller calling out an ever descending series of prices to see what the wholesalers are willing to pay.

This is the beginning of a process which ends up determining how much you will pay at the supermarket or in a restaurant for your next fish and chips. And as it happens, fish prices are more or less the same now as they were a year ago - actually, according to the Office for National Statistics, the going price for domestic fish is down 1.2% in the year to February.

But like everything else in the "shopping basket" that constitutes the overall inflation rate, fish prices have been on something of a rollercoaster in recent years. As the cost of everything else - the fuel for trawlers, the paper for packaging, the wages for fishermen - went up, so too did fish prices. In early 2022 fish inflation was nearly 30%.

The point here being that while inflation - the rate at which prices are up in the past year - is now down, that doesn't mean prices are down. Quite the contrary: they're still much higher (for fish and for pretty much everything else) today than they were a couple of years ago. The inflation crisis may be coming to an end but the cost of living crisis is not.

That speaks to a broader point. We are, as a nation, poorer than we were a few years ago, largely because the cost of our energy (something we mostly import) is still higher. Households are still squeezed, not just by the fact that their weekly shop is more than it was a few years ago but by a host of other pressures: energy bills, mortgage interest bills.

That's problematic for the chancellor, who is desperately hoping people start to feel a bit more optimistic about the economy this year - for reasons you can probably guess at.

Perhaps that will indeed happen, especially if and when inflation drops further in the coming months (it's expected to drop to 2% later this spring). But lower inflation doesn't automatically mean people feel better off. The feel good factor still has yet to return to the UK economy.

Jeremy Hunt has indicated he's eyeing up changes to benefits and the state pension to help boost the economy and fund increased defence spending.

The chancellor told a House of Lords committee that continuing the triple lock - a commitment to increase the state pension by the highest of either earnings growth, inflation or 2.5% - was contingent on the government's ambitions to improve public services and achieve long-term economic growth.

Asked about whether the triple lock and pension age were sustainable, he replied: "Both those things are kept under review."

Mr Hunt also said the Treasury needed to "keep looking" at welfare reform.

"It is incredibly destructive to society if, inadvertently and for all the right reasons, a system ends up parking people outside the world of work," he said.

A sharp slowing in the rate of price rises last month means four in five savings accounts now offer inflation-beating rates, new figures show.

As we've been reporting, Office for National Statistics data showed an easing in the headline inflation measure to 3.4% in February from 4% the previous month.

Moneyfactscompare.co.uk has analysed the top savings deals on offer today - and a huge 1,365 now offer rates above inflation, in stark contrast to last March, when no deals could beat the 10.4% headline rate.

This table shows the best savings rates available as of 20 March...

And for ISAs....

James Hyde, spokesperson at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said: "Top variable rates across savings accounts and ISAs continue to hold very steady as they have in recent months, though any potential reduction in base rate may precipitate more movement in this area of the market."

With the new tax year around the corner, people are also being urged to make use of their ISA allowance before it resets.

Inflation may be down, but prices in February were 3.4% higher than at the same time last year, putting pressure on already stretched household budgets.

Every Wednesday, chefs at Michelin or award-winning restaurants around the UK, plus critics and top bloggers, tell us their favourite places for a cheap meal out wherever they are.

Today, we're excited to be speaking to Simon Carlo, who runs the award-winning Meat and One Veg blog .  These are his picks in Birmingham...

What are your favourite cheap eats around Birmingham? A meal for two for less than £40...

  • Yikouchi - Whilst teaching English in Beijing, James fell in love with, and subsequently learned to cook, Sichuan food. The menu is short and nothing is over a tenner. Their fried chicken in chilli oil is legendary, whilst the fish fragrant aubergine is arguably the best vegan dish in Birmingham.
  • WokChi - a Cantonese that never fails to deliver. The menu is approachable, if slightly anglicised, and far too cheap. There isn't a dud on the menu, though barely a week goes by when I don't visit them for the Singapore style rice with roast pork, chicken, and prawns.
  • Shababs - the last bastion of the Balti Triangle is stronger than ever. It's hard to look past the chicken balti; theirs is semi-dry with caramelised edges from the rapid cook. The table naan has to be seen to be believed.

After Tesco was told it needed to change its Clubcard logo over claims it copied rival Lidl's yellow and blue branding yesterday, On The Beach has launched an ad campaign featuring a very similar design.

The holiday company, which also has yellow and blue brand colours, released a set of adverts poking fun at Lidl and the court's decision.

One advertises a holiday deal to Majorca and reads: Lidl prices on holidays in the sun (which is what this yellow circle represents).

Another references the discount retailer's "ownership" over the yellow circle.

One of them also points to Tesco's involvement, making it clear that a Clubcard is not required to enjoy its deals.

"Last time we checked, Lidl don't own yellow circles with deals on," says Zoe Harris, chief customer officer at On the Beach.

"One thing is for sure, Lidl can never own that yellow circle in the sky and they certainly can't stop you from enjoying it on your next holiday, all whilst getting our free mobile data perk. Just don't waste it on checking any supermarket deals."

NV obtains new photos and videos of the elimination of traitorous ex-MP Ilya Kyva near Moscow

Photos and videos of the elimination of pro-Russian ex-MP Ilya Kyva in a Moscow suburb were obtained by NV from sources in Ukraine’s SBU Security Service on Dec. 11.

This special operation was meticulously planned and successfully executed, the SBU informant confirmed.

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.

Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.

“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.

Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.

Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.

Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.

The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

CDC updates and simplifies respiratory virus recommendations

Recommendations are easier to follow and help protect those most at risk

For Immediate Release: Friday, March 1, 2024 Contact: Media Relations (404) 639-3286

CDC released today updated recommendations  for how people can protect themselves and their communities from respiratory viruses, including COVID-19. The new guidance brings a unified approach to addressing risks from a range of common respiratory viral illnesses, such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV, which can cause significant health impacts and strain on hospitals and health care workers. CDC is making updates to the recommendations now because the U.S. is seeing far fewer hospitalizations and deaths associated with COVID-19 and because we have more tools than ever to combat flu, COVID, and RSV.

“Today’s announcement reflects the progress we have made in protecting against severe illness from COVID-19,” said CDC Director Dr. Mandy Cohen. “However, we still must use the commonsense solutions we know work to protect ourselves and others from serious illness from respiratory viruses—this includes vaccination, treatment, and staying home when we get sick.”

As part of the guidance, CDC provides active recommendations on core prevention steps and strategies:

  • Staying  up to date with vaccination   to protect people against serious illness, hospitalization, and death. This includes flu, COVID-19, and RSV if eligible.
  • Practicing good hygiene by covering coughs and sneezes, washing or sanitizing hands often, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
  • Taking steps for cleaner air , such as bringing in more fresh outside air, purifying indoor air, or gathering outdoors.

When people get sick with a respiratory virus, the updated guidance recommends that they stay home and away from others. For people with COVID-19 and influenza, treatment is available and can lessen symptoms and lower the risk of severe illness. The recommendations suggest returning to normal activities when, for at least 24 hours, symptoms are improving overall, and if a fever was present, it has been gone without use of a fever-reducing medication.

Once people resume normal activities, they are encouraged to take additional prevention strategies for the next 5 days to curb disease spread, such as taking more steps for cleaner air, enhancing hygiene practices, wearing a well-fitting mask, keeping a distance from others, and/or getting tested for respiratory viruses. Enhanced precautions are especially important to protect those most at risk for severe illness, including those over 65 and people with weakened immune systems. CDC’s updated guidance reflects how the circumstances around COVID-19 in particular have changed.  While it remains a threat, today it is far less likely to cause severe illness because of widespread immunity and improved tools to prevent and treat the disease.  Importantly, states and countries that have already adjusted recommended isolation times have not seen increased hospitalizations or deaths related to COVID-19.

While every respiratory virus does not act the same, adopting a unified approach to limiting disease spread makes recommendations easier to follow and thus more likely to be adopted and does not rely on individuals to test for illness, a practice that data indicates is uneven.

“The bottom line is that when people follow these actionable recommendations to avoid getting sick, and to protect themselves and others if they do get sick, it will help limit the spread of respiratory viruses, and that will mean fewer people who experience severe illness,” National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases Director Dr. Demetre Daskalakis said. “That includes taking enhanced precautions that can help protect people who are at higher risk for getting seriously ill.”

The updated guidance also includes specific sections with additional considerations for people who are at higher risk of severe illness from respiratory viruses, including people who are immunocompromised, people with disabilities, people who are or were recently pregnant, young children, and older adults. Respiratory viruses remain a public health threat. CDC will continue to focus efforts on ensuring the public has the information and tools to lower their risk or respiratory illness by protecting themselves, families, and communities.

This updated guidance is intended for community settings. There are no changes to respiratory virus guidance for healthcare settings.
