Stop in for a bite, a drink, or an ice cream in the city of Avalon, or head inland for a tour of the island’s wild buffalo herd. Lay your head at the Hotel Atwater , a more than 100-year-old gem in Avalon.

Redwood National Park

Carmen Martínez Torrón/Getty Images

Located in the northern part of the state, Redwood National Park is home to some of the tallest trees in the world — some so large, you have to drive through them to get by. Again, it’s best to stay in the park, which is entirely possible, thanks to the delightfully charming little abodes at Elk Meadow Cabins .

Spend the night at the Surf & Sand Resort and leave the windows open all night to snooze to the sound of the crashing waves outside.

The charming community of Solvang is well-known for its Danish-style architecture that will make you feel like you've been transported to Europe. Here, visitors can indulge in more of California’s wine culture, too. Book a stay right in town at the Mirabelle Inn , home to First & Oak, a Michelin Plate-designated restaurant.

Travel Away

The 20 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in California

California, the third-largest state in the US, is jam-packed with a blend of urban, natural, and cultural destinations. Road trip to its nine National Parks or zip between bustling cities and desert oasis. Any way you slice it, there is no shortage of opportunities for exploration amid spectacular scenery. Read on for the 20 best places to visit on your next trip to Cali.

Big Sur, California

Dramatic cliffs and pristine ocean views await at Big Sur, one of Central California’s most stunning areas. Due to strong ocean currents, its beaches are not ideal for swimming, but they are ripe for sunset strolls and idyllic picnics. Big Sur’s most popular beach, if not its most photogenic, is Pfeiffer Beach. Visitors flock to its shores (which can turn purple from manganese garnet rocks!) to see Keyhole Arch, a rock formation popular with photographers.

Further north, more gems are found, including Bixby Bridge, which was built in 1932 for an astonishing steal of a deal – $200,000 US dollars. Engineers thoughtfully opted to build it with cement as it better camouflaged into the natural landscape – as best as an imposing 260-foot bridge can, that is. Today, visitors can thank these engineers for constructing one of California’s most emblematic sites.

Death Valley

Death Valley National Park

For a destination of extremes, look no further than Death Valley National Park. Not only is it the lowest point in North America, with Badwater Basin’s salt flats clocking in at 86 meters (282 feet) below sea level, but the hottest temperature on Earth (56.7° C /134° F) was recorded at the aptly named Furnace Creek Ranch. And yet, wildflowers continue to bloom and snow-capped mountains loom in the background.

Death Valley inspires infinite curiosity; rainbow-colored rocks make up Artists Palette, the curvaceous sand dunes of Eureka Dunes “sing”, and small ghost towns dot the park. Much of it is answered by science, such as the oxidation of metal deposits coloring rocks and “singing” caused by shifting sand grains, but some mysteries endure. One of the most compelling curiosities is Racetrack Playa, a dry lakebed where rocks weighing hundreds of kilograms inexplicably move an equally impressive distance, leaving trails in their wake. This is also a fantastic spot for stargazing as its unobstructed landscape and lack of light pollution provide unmatched views.

Santa Monica Pier

Santa Monica Pier

When conjuring images of a quintessential Southern California city, you’re likely picturing Santa Monica. This beachside paradise offers all things classic Cali: towering palms, a picturesque boardwalk, and more tacos than you knew you needed. Within its compact downtown area, you’ll find colorful murals and excellent restaurants for any appetite, but the main attraction is Santa Monica Pier, the heartbeat of the city.

By day, the Pier is filled with sunbathers and friends playing beach volleyball. After the sun sets – and this is one of the best places to catch it – Pacific Park, a mini-amusement park, lights up for evening fun.

Catalina Island

Catalina Island

Catalina Island is a quick trip from the mainland while feeling like a world away. Part of Channel Islands National Park, it attracts a variety of travelers, from outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs to those ready to unwind and relax.

Its most popular area is undoubtedly Avalon Bay, a pleasant seaside town with ocean vistas and a lively atmosphere. Here, an assortment of shops and restaurants abound, and is even home to the Catalina Wine Mixer – a wine and music venue made famous by Will Farrell in the movie Step Brothers . It’s also a site for many films, including one from the 1920s that required bringing bison to the island. Producers found it too challenging to wrangle them back up, so today, descendants of these bison continue to roam the island, which is protected by the Catalina Island Conservancy.

Avenue of the Giants

Avenue of the Giants

If there were ever a place to make one feel minuscule, the Avenue of Giants is it. This unmissable drive is located in Northern California’s Humboldt Redwoods State Park, home to a large concentration of Redwood trees. Visitors cruise along the 50 km (31 mi) road as it gently curves between immense tree groves and take in the rich greenery and lush forest vegetation.

Along the route are trails that allow you to meander into the woods and frolic among some of the oldest trees on the planet. Being beside thousand-year-old Redwoods that commonly reach heights equivalent to skyscrapers makes for an unforgettable experience.

El Matador State Beach

El Matador Beach

Malibu is a picturesque city on the coast that boasts resplendent beaches and outstanding scenery. Its high housing prices bring wealthy celebrities, though high ocean waves entice surfers. With the range of people it attracts, Malibu expertly fuses upscale amenities with a relaxed atmosphere.

Both tourists and locals flock to the dozens of small beaches scattered along the coastline, though Matador State Beach stands out for its imposing sea stacks and scenic bluffs. For a perfect day, start by enjoying a picnic on the cliffside, then mosey to the beach to explore rock arches and sea caves. Before you know it, the sun will be setting and putting on its colorful nightly show.

San Francisco

Long street in San Francisco

San Francisco is an exciting city that ticks all boxes; eclectic history, amazing scenery, diverse culture, and a fantastic food scene. Located on the northern coast, it’s a bit cooler than its southern counterpart and is often enshrouded in fog, yet that’s all part of its charm.

From the engineering feat that is Golden Gate Bridge to wandering historic Alcatraz Prison, opportunities for exploration are abundant. Must-see sights are spread across the city’s diverse neighborhoods, including the Painted Ladies on Steiner Street, wandering Fisherman’s Wharf, and strolling Lombard Street – which only scratches the surface of what this splendid city offers.

Napa Valley

Napa Valley

Sprawling vineyards, striking scenery, and cozy resorts? What more could you want from a California getaway? The consistent sunshine that graces Napa Valley doesn’t hurt its reputation either.

With hundreds of wineries to discover, a trip to Napa Valley can be daunting, but rest assured, it’s virtually impossible to go wrong. The wines of Napa rival the best in France (though don’t tell the French), and there is a distinct variety of wines and estates to fit any style. From sipping sparkling wine at a stunning château to cabernets at a modern vineyard or pinot noirs at a rustic lodge with expansive views, a trip to Napa never disappoints.

Pacific Coast Highway

The Most Beautiful Place in California

For an endless array of eye-catching vistas, you can’t beat a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway. Stretching for 1,055 glorious kilometers (656 miles), it traverses the rugged California Coast from San Francisco in the north to the laid-back seaside town of San Diego in the south. Scattered in between are iconic California landmarks, such as the epic views from Big Sur and the lush valleys of San Luis Obispo. You can drive its length in 10 hours, but it’s best enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

Yosemite National Park

Horsetail Fall in February

Yosemite National Park holds several impressive titles, including being home to the tallest waterfall in North America (Yosemite Falls) and the world’s largest granite monolith (El Capitan). To top it off, it’s sprinkled with 3,000-year-old Giant Sequoia trees that seemingly touch the sky.

While it sprawls across 302,000 hectares (747,000 acres), its most famous sites are within Yosemite Valley, an 11 km (7 mi) wide canyon boasting dramatic waterfalls and towering cliffs. Here, Half Dome dominates the horizon, which, true to its name, resembles a massive sphere sliced in half. Another must-see is El Capitan, a popular rock climbing route made more famous in 2017 when Alex Honnold free solo climbed its eastern face, which rises 914 meters (3000 feet) from base to summit.

For a spectacular experience, visit in early February when – for ten minutes each year if conditions are perfect – the sun perfectly illuminates Horsetail Fall, and its cascading waters suddenly glow bright orange and resemble a lava flow, giving it the nickname “Firefall”.

Best national park for a road trip

The Best U.S. National Parks to Road Trip This Summer

Mono Lake

Drive due east of Yosemite and encounter one of North America’s oldest lakes – which feels like landing on a strange planet. You see, Mono Lake is no ordinary lake; it has a unique ecosystem and interesting rock formations that make it a haven for geology enthusiasts and leave nature lovers in awe.

It’s best known for its “tufa towers,” the odd-looking rocks in and around the lake that are hard to miss. They are the result of calcium bubbling under the lake which hardens to create quirky rock structures – a phenomenon that has occurred for thousands of years. The lake’s high concentration of salt also sets it apart. Not only will it have you floating like a buoy, but it creates an environment where brine shrimp thrive, which in turn brings an absurd number of migratory birds each year.

Solvang, California

Denmark may not be the place you think of when imagining California, but the quaint town of Solvang feels like stepping into a Danish-inspired theme park. Founded in 1911 by a group of Danes, Solvang (which means “sunny field”) became a place dedicated to Lutheranism and getting warm. Today, it is known more for its food scene and Nordic style than its religious roots, though the sunshine remains enticing.

As the “Danish Capital of America”, it’s surrounded by all things Nordic: wooden windmills, charming architecture, and delectable bakeries. If you’re eager to embrace Dutch culture and history, be sure to stop at one of the town’s many museums, including the Elverhøj Museum of History and Art or the Hans Christian Andersen Museum. From sausage and beers to fine dining and wine tasting, Solvang’s food scene is worth a trip in itself, too!

Point Reyes National Seashore Park

Cypress Tree Tunnel

With its rolling green hills and jaw-dropping cliffs, Point Reyes National Seashore Park is reminiscent of Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher. Driving there is half the fun as it lies on the ultra-scenic Pacific Coast Highway and weaves through sleepy coastal towns. Here, days are spent shucking oysters, enjoying quaint cafés, taking leisurely walks among its beautiful scenery, and spotting the marine wildlife that lazily graces the shoreline.

A must-see is the iconic Cypress Tree Tunnel, a road lined with Monterey cypress trees whose branches have entangled themselves to create a beautiful natural tunnel. The road eventually leads to the historic KPH Maritime Radio Receiving Station, an Art Deco-style building that has provided ship-to-shore Morse code telegram communications since the 1930s.

Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree National Park

The wacky-looking trees and cartoon-shaped rocks of Joshua Tree National Park make it a joy to explore. Year-round, its arid desert landscape attracts climbers, road trippers, day hikers, and photographers, all looking for a little California warmth in a breathtaking setting.

Unlike some of the state’s national park heavy hitters, like Yosemite and Redwoods, Joshua Tree is a little less chaotic and a lot more laid-back. You will find no restaurants or shops in the park, nor any hotels or lodges. Instead, you will discover a rugged expanse of unadulterated natural desert paradise punctuated by iconic Joshua trees.

Los Angeles Skyline from the Griffith Observatory

Los Angeles Skyline from the Griffith Observatory

Los Angeles may be known as the City of Stars for its A-List Hollywood actors, but there is an abundance of stars to be seen above, too. For the best views of L.A. amid a dazzling night sky backdrop, head to Griffith Observatory. This distinguished tri-domed observatory is located on the south side of Mount Hollywood and treats visitors to unparalleled vistas of the bustling city below, the Pacific Ocean, and the Hollywood sign.

Inside, an astronomical number of exhibits await with learning opportunities galore, including an impressive planetarium. Plus, solar telescopes provide a spectacular peek at the cosmos. The best part? Entry to Griffith Observatory is free!

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel-by-the-Sea

For a quaint weekend escape, look no further than Carmel-by-the-Sea, a charming coastal town that looks out of a storybook. The city enacts a few strange laws – no street lights, no high heels allowed, no chain restaurants, and houses are named and not numbered – but this keeps the darling of the Central Coast pristine and authentic.

It’s known as much for its Bavarian-style architecture and art galleries as it is for its outdoor spaces. Between shopping and restaurant hopping, visitors can snorkel, search for wildlife, and hike on one of the many nearby trails. When all else fails, head to the white sand beaches and go into full-on relaxation mode.

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

Since the 1800s, Emerald Bay has been the crown jewel of Lake Tahoe, a picturesque destination that straddles the border of California and Nevada. Its outdoor activities and unhurried atmosphere make it an ideal spot to rent a lakeside cabin and spend summer days soaking in the sun.

Unique experiences also abound, like the Emerald Bay Underwater Heritage Trail, a series of dive and snorkel sites with historical relics and regional history, as well as Vikingsholm Castle, a 38-room Scandinavian-style mansion that offers immaculate panoramic views of the bay below.

Palm Springs

Palm Springs

Palm Springs is the luxurious playground of Hollywood stars, but you need not be famous to visit. Whether on a romantic getaway, a weekend girls’ trip, or enjoying a warm vacation, its clear blue skies and swaying palm trees are eager to welcome you.

Filled with mid-century architecture and a bohemian atmosphere to match, Palm Springs is a laid-back destination to unwind – though if you’re itching to party, there’s no better spot than the Saguaro Hotel! If you can drag yourself from the poolside, head to Palm Canyon Drive to relish in the upscale shopping scene and fine dining options in its downtown core. While Palm Springs is best known as a luxury destination, there are a few offbeat sites to visit, too, like the Cabazon Dinosaurs and ultra-colorful Salvation Mountain!

Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve

Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve

The Mojave Desert in Southern California is home to several stunning national and state parks, but its most eye-popping is Antelope Valley. Each spring, Antelope Valley erupts into a sea of orange as California poppies, the state’s beloved official flower, brighten the landscape. While it is managed by California State Parks, it remains all-natural; no simulated water schedules or pruning here! Luckily, it’s known for its consistent blooming season, but it is, of course, dependent on the year’s heat and rain. To help plan your trip, keep an eye on the State’s Bloom Status Updates to not miss out!

Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara

Nicknamed the American Riviera for its Mediterranean-like climate and scenery, Santa Barbara is a longtime favorite in the “weekend getaway” category. With its sun-kissed beaches, vibrant restaurant scene, and charming Spanish colonial architecture, it’s easy to see why. Visitors instantly melt into its relaxed atmosphere and find rejuvenation among the palm-lined streets and sailboat-dotted coastline.

Whether strolling through galleries and shops in the bohemian-inspired Funk Zone, taking in the city’s history at El Presidio Historic Park, or eating and drinking your way through town, Santa Barbara has something for everyone. It’s also one of California’s best wine destinations! Most vineyards are outside the city and make for wonderful day trips, while back in the downtown area, there is the Urban Wine Trail, which boasts over 30 wine bars along its route.

California Road Trip: 19 Places You Have To See

Epic Places To Visit In California (10)

Dreaming or planning your big California road trip. Then look no further; I want to share some of my favourite spots you should definitely include.

Thinking of heading to the West Coast for the blissful sun, breathtaking coastline and dramatic national parks? Well, look no further! I’ve decided to share an ultimate Californian road-trip that will hopefully help you master your very own trip!

I have headed out on two California road trips. One from the Northern limits of Lake Tahoe , heading south all the way to Los Angeles and another, with Yaya, where we headed west from Death Valley towards the Pacific ocean.

This ultimate road trip takes in both of these awesome routes and provides an ultimate Californian road trip, filled with where to shop, eat, see and explore all across this great state.

California Road Trip

Have the best time exploring on your California road trip!

1.)  Sequoia National Park, South Sierra Nevada

14 Best Places In California To Visit This Year (2)

Head to Sequoia National Park to experience the breathtaking beauty and dramatic landscapes that are present in Tulare County. See some of the largest Trees you can ever see! Truly spectacular.

Oh yes, keep an eye-open for General Sherman. It’s the perfect stop on your California road trip.

2.) Griffith Observatory, Los Angeles

Best Hikes In California (21)

Nestled on the side of Mount Hollywood in Los Angeles, the Griffith Observatory is a great place to explore the extraterrestrial world that can be viewed within the observatory itself.

This world-famous landmark has, since its opening, always been free. So there’s no excuse to find a few unfettered hours to explore the mighty wonders that await your eyes!

The planetarium is “out-of-this-world” (excuse the pun) and the views of downtown Los Angeles are as equally spectacular. 🚀

It’s a fun addition to your California road trip that you won’t want to miss.

3.) Pier 39, San Francisco

Free Things To Do In San Francisco (22)

No California road trip would be complete without San Francisco. And, of course, Pier 39.

This once working and trade pier has now been transformed into an open area of restaurants, shops and seals that bathe along the front! Take some time to eat some clam chowder from the markets on, and around the pier – it’s delicious.

Best Things To Do In San Francisco (6)

What is a little less delicious is the smell of the seals! Haha! I had no idea they smelt so bad – did anyone else think this when visiting?

4.) San Diego Old Town And Balboa Park

Epic Places To Visit In California (32)

San Diego is an amazing place to experience some great Californian Wines and Mexican cuisine! Oh, and lots of history that date back centuries.

Epic Places To Visit In California (28)

Make sure to visit the Old-Town historic State Park, which dates back to the early 19th Century. It’s an epic spot you have to add to your California road trip.

Epic Places To Visit In California (5)

Oh yeah, one of the best Mexican restaurants is called Oscar’s Mexican Sea-Food.

It seems like every single person that visits San Diego raves about it, and I’m one of them.

5.) Mono Lake &  Mono County

Epic Places To Visit In California (12)

Based in Mono County, this relatively shallow but dramatic lake formed over hundreds of thousands of years. I’m sure I was even told 1 million years.

Mono Lake is a great place to stop for an hour or two. Take a picnic or just relax on the water’s edge!

Just don’t dare drink this lake water! Its high-salt content makes this lake a unique and very salty body of water.

6.) Route 66

Epic Places To Visit In California (24)

No trip to California would be complete without a trip upon a portion of the infamous, Route 66. Take this historic road west from the ocean and head towards the Arizona and Nevada Border.

There are many awesome places to eat (and sleep) along the way.

Epic Places To Visit In California (23)

Just make sure to pack lots of water, as the dry and arid desert can be unforgiving on any California road trip.

7.) Lake Tahoe, Sierra Nevada

Epic Places To Visit In California (27)

Ok, forgive me if I’m wrong but I remember spending a good amount of time on a beach at Lake Tahoe and flapping around in the lake – but this is not all you can do there.

Best Things To Do In Lake Tahoe

Visit Vikingsholm for an awesome look at a modern-day castle, nestled in the hills surrounding Lake Tahoe.

8.) Asilomar State Beach, Monterey Peninsula

Best Hikes In California (15)

100km west of Hollister (no, not the shop, the actual town) is Asilomar State Beach.

Situated in Pacific Grove, the beach is famed for its breathtaking sunsets and camping opportunities!

I remember being on the beach all evening, watching the sunset and eating camp-fire roasted cuisine directly from the pan. It doesn’t sound fancy, but I assure you it was amazing.

9.) Temecula, Riverside County

Epic Places To Visit In California (14)

Temecula is an inland city that sits neatly between San Diego and Los Angeles .

This area is famed for its wine region. Why not book something extra special like a hot-air balloon ride. Rather, take in the many award-winning wineries that blanket this region.

Just no drinking and driving on your California road trip. No one likes a reckless driver.

10.) Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino County

Best Hikes In California (6)

Perched within the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake and town is one of the best places to go to see a different side of California. Its relaxed atmosphere provides a perfect place to really be at one with nature.

There are some great camping opportunities if you feel like.

11.) Yosemite National Park, Sierra Nevada Mountains

Epic Places To Visit In California (11)

Yosemite . Is. Spectacular!

It’s one of my favourite National Parks in the United States .

Pack some comfy hiking shoes and take a trek up the mountains. I remember trekking for 8 hours on my visit and my legs went all wobbly by the time I had returned to base – but, rest assured, it’s worth it.

Epic Places To Visit In California (18)

Don’t forget to keep an eye-open for El-Capitan and some of the other famous landmarks while you’re in the park. I would recommend staying here for 3 days or so and make the most of this magical place.

It’s one of my favourite stops for your California road trip.

12.) Big Sur

14 Best Places In California To Visit This Year (6)

Head south (or north) down the Big Sur – this coastline drive, which starts close to Monterey is a spectacular coastline where the Santa Lucia Mountains meet the ocean.

Epic Places To Visit In California (15)

Not only is it dramatic, but it makes for one of the most scenic drives I have ever completed.

13.) Santa Monica Pier & Pacific Park, Los Angeles

Best Beaches In California To Visit (3)

For some old-fashion fun in Santa Monica, why not head to the double-jointed pier that juts out into the Pacific Ocean.

Best of all, you can explore the pier for free. Just make sure to take a few dollars to ride some of the most awesome rides in the city. It’s the best way to let your hair down during your California road trip.

14.) Redwoods State Park, Humboldt County

Epic Places To Visit In California (4)

Head to this state park in Humboldt County to see some of the tallest Redwoods in the world! Rising almost 100 metres high, these trees are an epic reminder of how awesome nature is.

What is even more interesting is that these trees can live for over 1000 years.

15.) Alcatraz, San Francisco

Best Things To Do In San Francisco (8)

Ever wondered what it’s like to be marooned on an island within a high-security and infamous prison? Well, now is your chance. Take a short boat ride from Pier 39 straight to incarceration.

Okay, that might be a little too dramatic, but it’s a significant site to visit in California, which housed some of the most infamous criminals in the country.

I was fortunate enough to speak with an original guard when I was there… he talked about his time and experience of being a working prison officer in the Jail. I remember being totally mesmerised by his account.

16.) San Francisco Cable Cars

Free Things To Do In San Francisco (16)

No journey to San Francisco would be complete without a journey on the cities cable car network.

Head up and down the hills of the city and enjoy a tour of the city. It’s a great way to explore many areas of the city. Plus, it’s a fun ride too.

17.) Marin County, Muir Woods

Epic Places To Visit In California (6)

Just over the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Muir Woods is a spectacular place to explore the local habitat of many of northern California’s wildlife.

Head here for a few hours on your way north or south along the coastal roads.

18.) Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

Epic Places To Visit In California (8)

For a truly American sporting event! Submerse yourself within a baseball game at the Dodgers Stadium. When I first visited I reneger being struck by how energetic and intense the crowds were. There was so much passion in the stand.

I have to say that I didn’t really understand too much of the game, but it was an experience that I loved and recommend to anyone that visits Los Angeles.

19.) Death Valley National Park

Epic Places To Visit In California (17)

Located in Eastern California, Death Valley is one of the driest and hottest areas in all of the United States. In the hight of Summer, Temperatures can reach up to 45-50 degrees.

Epic Places To Visit In California (22)

I remember that the park ranger wouldn’t initially allow us access to the park without buying lots of water for our SUV.

So, plan, prepare and be responsible when continuing your road-trip through Death Valley .

26 top things to do in california.

There's something for everyone in the Golden State.

Top Things to Do in California

Looking up through sequoia trees at Redwood National Park.

California is full of beautiful destinations and fun attractions to experience.

California's attractions are so diverse that travelers of all types will have no problem finding things to thrill them. Beaches , lakes , forests, mountains and deserts all sit side by side within the state's borders. Amid its natural wonders, California is also home to several wine regions, luxury hotels and, of course, star-studded Hollywood. With all this and so much more, it may be challenging to figure out how to fit all the state's most important must-sees in one or more trips.

Let this guide assist you in your California vacation planning, whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned pro. From the north to the south and everything in between, these are the top things to do in California.

17-Mile Drive

Lone Cypress, a prominent landmark along the 17 Mile Drive, on a foggy day

California's 17-Mile Drive is a spellbinding and awe-inspiring route that weaves along the most scenic stretch of the Monterey Bay coastline. This must-visit road, winding through the exclusive community of Pebble Beach, takes drivers up into the Del Monte Forest, past palatial mansions and down along picture-perfect craggy beaches and bluffs. Take time to stop at the various lookout points marked along the way, including the famous Lone Cypress.

If you're interested in bedding down in Pebble Beach, consider splurging on a room, or at least stopping for a meal, to behold the stunning scenery that surrounds the properties at Pebble Beach Resorts, including The Lodge at Pebble Beach or The Inn at Spanish Bay . If you are not staying overnight or dining here, expect to pay a vehicle fee to access 17-Mile Drive. Also note that motorcycles are not allowed.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

Empty trail by the coastline at Carmel-by-the-Sea, California.

This small community in Monterey County is one of the most unique and charming towns in California. Its enchanting coastal location, wooded streets, fairytale-like architecture, and bevy of local shops and restaurants make Carmel-by-the-Sea well worth the detour from the iconic state Route 1. Even if you only have a half-day in Carmel, browse the art galleries, take a walk on the beach and enjoy a meal in one of the quaint restaurants.

Be sure to visit a few of Carmel's beaches, starting with the namesake Carmel Beach, which is located at the end of Ocean Avenue, the town's main drag; pet owners will be pleased to know it's a dog-friendly beach . Carmel River State Beach, which is lesser known and typically not as highly trafficked, connects to the even more secluded Monastery Beach via the Carmel Meadows Trail. As for where to stay, consider treating yourself to one of the town's luxurious accommodations, including traveler-approved L'Auberge Carmel or La Playa Carmel .

Visit the theme parks

You are truly spoiled for choice when it comes to theme parks in California. The impressive amount of options will please every type of traveler. Kids will naturally be dazzled by Anaheim's world-famous Disneyland Resort . However, if you're not up for paying Disneyland's notoriously high ticket fees, consider exciting alternatives such as Legoland California . There are Six Flags amusement and water parks near both Los Angeles and San Francisco – perfect for thrill-seekers – and Universal Studios Hollywood is home to the popular Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the new Super Nintendo World.

Due to the popularity of these parks, you'll have no problem finding nearby accommodations. Disney's Grand Californian Hotel & Spa is a top choice among travelers, as is The Garland for those visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. Legoland has two kid-friendly hotels to choose from, though travelers can also opt for a stay at the well-received Cape Rey Carlsbad Beach, a Hilton Resort and Spa , which is located right on the beach and only a short drive to Legoland.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite Valley National Park with a huge waterfall

If you only have time to visit one outdoor destination during your California trip, make it Yosemite . With the national park welcoming more than 3 million visitors per year, Yosemite Valley has been known to stir awe for centuries with its grand granite peaks, magnificent waterfalls and lush evergreen landscapes. There is so much to do in this nearly 750,000-acre park that you'll need several days to take it all in. If you're unsure where to start at this California bucket list destination, know that Glacier Point, Half Dome, Tunnel View and the Mist Trail are considered iconic, can't-miss Yosemite attractions , according to recent travelers.

There are three hotels within Yosemite, including the luxury Ahwahnee hotel. You'll also find cabins, canvas-sided tents, campgrounds and RV campsites spread around the park, as well as several dining options. Be warned that the park does get very crowded during the summer months, so visiting in the offseason is a great idea – especially with Yosemite's picturesque snow-capped peaks. Check for road closures during winter months; tire chains may be required.

Explore the desert

Springtime flowers in desert in California

To properly appreciate California's diverse geological landscape, you'll need to venture beyond the coast and explore the desert. Luckily, two magnificent desert landscapes can be found less than three hours from Los Angeles and San Diego. Joshua Tree National Park , located about 130 miles east of Los Angeles, is an approximately 800,000-acre oasis dotted with the unique Joshua tree, which can only be found in the American Southwest. Meanwhile, Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, located about 85 miles northeast of San Diego, is California's largest state park and features striking scenery ranging from slot canyons to palm oases.

Both of these parks offer memorable hiking trails and camping options. You'll want to plan a multiday trip to explore either of these vast parks. Traveler favorites in Joshua Tree include the 3-mile out-and-back Ryan Mountain trail and the 1.7-mile Skull Rock loop trail. In Anza-Borrego, visitors enjoyed the 2.6-mile out-and-back Pictograph Trail and the more moderate 2.3-mile Slot loop trail. Due to the desert's extreme summer heat (think: daytime temperatures in the 90s or even 100-plus degrees), it's best to visit during the spring and fall.

Laguna Beach

Aerial view of residences along Laguna Beach

If you're interested in experiencing small-town Southern California, Laguna Beach is the perfect place to start. Conveniently situated between Los Angeles and San Diego, Laguna Beach is located along the coast just off state Route 1. Laguna Beach's picturesque setting is characterized by pristine oceanfront parks and a collection of beautiful beaches wedged between its coastal bluffs. Be sure to visit unique cove beaches, such as Victoria Beach and Crescent Bay Beach, as well as larger shorelines, including traveler-favorite Crystal Cove State Park, which receives praise for its beautiful setting between Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Laguna Beach is also home to a bevy of luxurious accommodations , including The Ranch at Laguna Beach and the traveler-approved five-star Montage at Laguna Beach . Once an artists' colony, Laguna Beach is known for its summer art festivals and numerous art galleries. There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy too, such as mountain biking, skimboarding and hiking. Parking can be hard to find in the summer months and on holiday weekends, but there is a free open-air trolley service that runs along the area's stretch of coastline.

Waves breaking on El Matador beach in Southern California

Located a little more than 30 miles west of Los Angeles, Malibu is often seen as a coastal refuge for the rich and famous. While that impression is certainly true, Malibu is worth a visit for its superb beaches and the exceptional parks a stone's throw away.

Drive up state Highway 1 and make a pit stop at popular shorelines, including Robert H. Memorial State Beach, Zuma Beach and Point Dume State Beach. Nature lovers should also take time to hike some of the many trails at Point Mugu State Park, Topanga State Park or the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. For hikes with spectacular ocean views, hit up the 3-mile Solstice Canyon Loop trail or the challenging 2.7-mile Mugu Peak loop trail. Check for trail closures before heading out.

Due to Malibu's small size and affluence, you won't find many hotels that offer affordable rates, so you might want to bed down in nearby Los Angeles. If you are intent on staying in Malibu, you'll find comfort and luxury at the Malibu Beach Inn , The Surfrider Malibu and Hotel June Malibu. Stop by Malibu Country Mart for high-end shopping and farm-to-table dining, or check out Trancas Country Market for snacks at Vintage Grocers or lunch at Malibu Brewing Company.

While in the San Francisco Bay Area, take a tour of the infamous Alcatraz Island , an island that has housed a fort, military prison and penitentiary. Self-guided audio tours are included with your ferry ticket to Alcatraz: Listen to the stories of past inmates as you walk through what was once a maximum-security prison. On the island, you'll also find an exhibition about the 1969 Native American occupation of Alcatraz that took place for 19 months to advocate for Indigenous civil rights.

Alcatraz features amazing views of the San Francisco skyline, historic gardens and a sanctuary for nesting waterbirds. The ferry ride aboard Alcatraz City Cruises takes about 15 minutes. Advance reservations are recommended.

San Diego skyline from the ocean

The state's second-largest city is a great alternative for those who want a big city experience without the intense traffic and smog of neighboring Los Angeles. San Diego is a premier vacation destination thanks to its diverse array of attractions . Here, you have your pick of fantastic beaches , including Pacific Beach and La Jolla Shores.

Other top things to explore include the world-famous San Diego Zoo, museum-heavy Balboa Park, Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve and traveler-favorite USS Midway Museum, located in a retired aircraft carrier. You'll find plenty of hotels near various points of interest in San Diego, including by the beach, the bay and downtown. For a real treat, consider a stay at the elegant Fairmont Grand Del Mar or the historic Hotel del Coronado, Curio Collection by Hilton .

Death Valley National Park

Sunrise in Ubehebe Crater at Death Valley National Park, California

This national park is one for the books, breaking records as both one of the hottest places on Earth and the driest land in North America. A visit to Death Valley is not easy; the closest major airport sits nearly two hours away in Las Vegas . Should you decide to make the trek, you'll be rewarded with memorable desert landscapes, including walkable sand dunes and Artists Drive, a 9-mile paved road past colorful hills. There's also the Racetrack, which is home to the famous moving rocks. If you'd like to stay within the park, know that there are a variety of campgrounds and lodging options, including The Oasis at Death Valley.

Waterfall along coast in Big Sur, California

This laid-back remote region located along the central coast of California should be on everybody's bucket list. The beauty of Big Sur is so palpable and restorative that it's become a popular spot for a wellness retreat. You can achieve this with a stay at the famous Esalen Institute, a holistic educational and wellness center, or at the luxurious Alila Ventana Big Sur , where you can book spa treatments and wellness activities. Travelers can also practice mindfulness while taking in all of Big Sur's stunning natural sights .

First-time visitors should stop and admire Bixby Bridge, hike along the coast at Andrew Molera State Park and visit McWay Falls at Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. You can also check out the inspiring Hawthorne Gallery or browse the Henry Miller Memorial Library before capping off the day by sitting in an Adirondack chair in the river at the Big Sur River Inn or catching a sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, home to the famous Keyhole Arch. Don't miss out on the delectable pastries at Big Sur Bakery. For lunch with a view and artisan souvenirs, Nepenthe is a must.

If Ventana Big Sur is out of your price range for accommodations , consider a stay at the more affordable Glen Oaks Big Sur or the Big Sur Lodge, both of which earn high praise from travelers for their serene woodland settings. Or, pitch a tent at Ventana Campground.

Los Angeles

Aerial of Los Angeles skyline in California

The City of Angels is a go-to place that deserves a spot on every California itinerary. Aside from being home to Hollywood, Los Angeles also offers an incomparable dining scene; some of California's most famous beaches, including Venice and Santa Monica; world-class art institutions, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the state-of-the-art Getty Center; self-guided hiking options galore; and a variety of other attractions .

There is so much to do that you'd need more than a week to see it all. An easy way to take in the sights is through bus tours: Some tours allow you to skip the line for popular attractions. LA is also filled to the brim with exceptional hotels . Give yourself the celebrity treatment and splurge on a stay at highly rated properties, such as The Beverly Hills Hotel , Hotel Bel-Air or The Peninsula Beverly Hills .

Indulge in wine country

Vineyard in Napa Valley, California

Many are aware of Napa Valley 's reputation as a world-class wine destination , but Napa isn't the state's only wine producing hot spot. Sonoma is considered Napa's more casual sibling, offering more diversity in terms of attractions , including the beaches of Sonoma Coast State Park and the African-style game drives run by Safari West. Travel farther south to experience the Santa Ynez Valley, considered one of the most diverse grape-growers in the country. Meanwhile, Temecula Valley Wine Country, found north of San Diego, has produced hundreds of award-winning wines from its member wineries. With so many wine regions in California, you are likely to be within driving distance of at least one wherever you are in the state.

Behold the giant sequoias and redwoods

Road through Sequoia National Park

Did you know that the Pacific Coast of the U.S. is the only place in the world where giant sequoias and coastal redwoods grow naturally? Visiting these natural wonders is a must-do when in the Golden State. Contrary to popular belief, redwoods and sequoias are not the same tree; they require two separate climates to survive. To see giant sequoias, head into the Sierra Nevada mountain range, such as to Sequoia National Park , where you'll find the world's largest tree measured by volume: General Sherman.

To marvel at giant redwoods, you have your pick of Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park or Humboldt Redwoods State Park (don't miss the Shrine Drive Thru Tree). All these parks sit in northwestern California. These parks offer a variety of camping experiences, such as individual campsites, group sites and trail camps for wilderness backpacking and backcountry camping. Tent camping sites and cabins are available.

Summer views across Lake Tahoe

If you're the kind of traveler who enjoys a lake vacation , know that Lake Tahoe is California's best. Situated in Northern California, Lake Tahoe is so big that is spills into neighboring Nevada. This alpine lake destination is lauded for its spectacular clear blue waters and beautiful mountainous landscape, and it features some of the best skiing in the country .

If you're visiting during winter, enjoy a ride along the slopes of Heavenly Ski Resort and Northstar California Resort. During the summer, soak up the sun with a dip at Kings Beach State Recreation Area or with a hike through one of the many trails that meander around the lake, such as the 4.4-mile out-and-back Emerald Point Trail at Emerald Bay State Park. What's more, there are a bevy of highly rated hotels in the area, including The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe ; The Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe; and the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino .

Experience wildflower season

Orange wildflowers across mountain in California

Spring and summer are great times to see an abundance of wildflowers – such as the state flower. Depending on where you go, the California poppy has been known to blanket valleys and hills with its vibrant orange tint. How much of a bloom you see and where varies based on the year's seasonal rainfall. Some of the best places to see wildflowers are in Southern California. Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, Point Mugu State Park, Figueroa Mountain Recreation Area and Chino Hills State Park are a few of the most popular locations where you can spot pretty flowers.

If your California travels will be concentrated in the north, try North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve or Lake Tahoe, the latter of which is known to feature a spectacular seasonal display of violet and deep blue lupines. Just be sure to respect the landscapes by staying on designated trails, checking to see if dogs are permitted before you bring your furry friend, and visiting only during park hours.

Santa Barbara

Aerial of white buildings in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara enjoys a beautiful location wedged between the coast and the mountains, affording visitors plenty of opportunities for hiking and time at the beach. Can't-miss shorelines include Summerland Beach, Arroyo Burro Beach and Leadbetter Beach. Santa Barbara's alluring Spanish and Mediterranean architecture also makes this destination feel like a true getaway.

Visit the Funk Zone for wine tasting and art, State Street for shopping and dining, and the one-of-a-kind Ganna Walska Lotusland. Hotel options in Santa Barbara are just as dreamy as the setting, with highly rated spots like The Ritz-Carlton Bacara, Santa Barbara and El Encanto, a Belmond Hotel . What's more, Santa Barbara sits around 100 miles northwest of Los Angeles (about a two-hour drive), which could make it a convenient addition to your LA itinerary.

Learn to surf at Huntington Beach

Huntington Beach Pier at sunset with dramatic clouds and a surfer

One of the most quintessentially Californian things to do during your trip is learn how to surf . There are several places you can surf up and down the coast, but beginners shouldn't go just anywhere: The best shorelines for novice surfers feature calm waters and knowledgeable lifeguards. Surf City USA (the nickname for Huntington Beach ) fits that bill perfectly, with several surf schools here. Highly rated operators include Corky Carroll's Surf School, Learn2Rip Surfing and Ocean Academy, and Banzai Surf School. After hitting the waves, rest your sore muscles at top-rated beachfront hotels , including the Kimpton Shorebreak Resort or the Pasea Hotel & Spa .

Explore one or more of the national forests

National park in California on a sunny day

Did you know California has the most national forests of any state in the nation? In addition to its famous national parks, California has 18 national forests to its name. If you are vacationing in the southern part of the state, consider a visit to the Cleveland, Angeles, San Bernardino or Los Padres national forests (but check with the U.S. Forest Service before you go to ensure they're not under closure orders caused by fire or storm damage when you visit). These options sit in proximity to vacation hot spots like San Diego, Los Angeles and Santa Barbara.

North of Sacramento, outdoor lovers have their choice of nearly a dozen national forests, including the Mendocino, Six Rivers and Klamath national forests, to name a few. These forest destinations offer beautiful wilderness landscapes, hiking trails and camping options.

Trek along the Lost Coast

The Lost Coast in California on a sunny day

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore from Chimney Rock trail at sunset

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Aerial view of Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles city skyline at sunset in California

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The Hollywood Sign in the distance on Mount Lee, overlooking the Hollywood district of Los Angeles

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

Golden light over Indian Wells Golf Resort, a desert golf course in Palm Springs, California, with view of the San Bernardino Mountains

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Make it a weekend away with an overnight stay at a Palm Springs hotel like the new wellness-focused Sensei Porcupine Creek or the modern yet rustic Sparrows Lodge .

Monterey Bay Aquarium

Orange Jellyfish in blue tank at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Located on the central California coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium draws nearly 2 million visitors per year. This institution houses more than 200 world-class exhibits that highlight the marine habitats of the area, as well as plants and creatures of the deep ocean. Guests can watch sea otters frolicking, witness glowing jellyfish and admire a 28-foot-tall kelp forest.

The aquarium also prides itself on working to protect the Pacific Ocean off California's coast. Its initiatives include reducing plastic pollution in the ocean, promoting sustainable seafood choices and helping rebuild sea otter populations. Past visitors recommend taking a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium.

Day 1: Animal Love in San Diego

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: On the day after I arrived at a place, I like to jump into easy local attractions. Then I feel like I’m making the most of my time without exhausting myself. San Diego is a great place to do just that — and with adorable, cuddly animals! The San Diego Zoo is a definite must-see, and you can ease into your adventure while loving on some four-legged friends.

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

Where to stay: If you want to try to see as much of the city in a short amount of time, I would recommend staying the night on Coronado Island . It might be pricier than other places in the city, but you really don’t want to miss checking out this spectacular spot.

Where to eat: Complete your day with delicious fish tacos in old town (not to be missed!) and cap it all off with a visit to their famous Little Italy for some truly authentic gelato. It’s so good!

Day 2: Salvation Mountain, Joshua Tree National Park and San Bernardino Forest

Two Monkeys Travel - California Road Trip - USA - Joshua Tree National Park 18

Where to stay: Your final destination today will be in Los Angeles, so just sit back, relax and enjoy the amazing scenery.

What to eat: I packed lunch this day in order to save a bit of time, but also so I could enjoy my meal in Joshua Tree. You can choose whatever you like, but on a day like today, a sack lunch is best.

Day 3: Checking out the City of Angels

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: If this is your first time to LA, you definitely need to check out the star-studded landmarks and make a trip to the beach. One of the best ways to check out the Hollywood Hills is on horseback. The Sunset Ranch offers daytime and sunset horseback riding, so you can choose which time is the most convenient for you. I also really love the Getty Villa. It’s a great museum, and on the plus side, it’s always free.

Where to stay: When I’m in Los Angeles, I prefer to check out AirBnB to save a little on lodging without sacrificing the amenities that come with a full apartment. You can also check in Luxe Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills .

What to eat: There are so many delicious places to eat in the city, narrowing down your choice might be difficult. However, I’ve found I’ve fallen in love with the “farm-to-table” concept and found an amazing place to munch on great local food at Le Comptoir . You don’t want to miss it.

“farm-to-table” concept and found an amazing place to munch on great local food at Le Comptoir . You don’t want to miss it.

Day 4: Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: Say goodbye to the city again and prepare for some tranquil moments in the amazing forests of Giant Sequoias in Yosemite National Park. This will be a bit of a drive, so your departure today will be early — but it will be so worth it. Plan on roughing it camping here so you can enjoy some amazing hikes to admire the scenery and the unreal Groves of GIANT Sequoias in Mariposa that can live up to 3,000 years. They will take your breath away.

Where to stay: You’ll be camping in the park, which is seriously something you have to do. Fires, stargazing and ghost stories can all be in your future.

What to eat: I really am a fan of campfire fare, and I also like to bring along supplies to make a good camp stew. It’s simple — ground beef, carrots, potatoes, onions, salt and pepper all tucked into tin foil and roasted right over the open flame.

Day 5: Exploring the Hills of Napa

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: Pack up your tent and prepare to get some use out of that corkscrew you always throw in your bags — or is that just me? From Yosemite, you’ll head to Napa Valley. It’s definitely one of those spots I would label a “must see” in Cali. Obviously, your main focus here is going to be trying the many delicious wines this area has to offer. You can pick up the wine train or do a self-guided tour. It all depends on you.

Where to stay: The Auberge du Soleil is like checking into wine country heaven. I would definitely recommend staying here. You won’t be disappointed.

What to eat: You’ll have no shortage of good eats at many of the wineries you’ll visit. Nothing goes better with wine than some great cheese. Eat up.

Day 6: All the Eats in San Francisco

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: So you’re on day six now, and if you’ve noticed the back and forth between activities and relaxing, then you’ll see that is completely intentional. We’ve driven a lot of miles at this point, but the scenery has been great along the way and the distances doable. From Napa, you’ll head to the beautiful bay area of San Francisco, where there is no shortage of things to do — Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, etc. — so you won’t be bored.

Where to stay: This is another destination where I would Airbnb it. The neighborhoods are so eclectic it’s like discovering something new each time you go back.

What to eat: Perhaps my favorite part about this city is all the different food choices. You’ll need to come with a very empty stomach so you can basically do a food tour. Have a burrito in Mission, Italian at Fiorella’s in the Richmond, delicious dim sum — multiple places if you can — in Chinatown, and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl on the waterfront. Seriously — the eats are incredible!

Day 7: Return to LA on the Pacific Coast Highway

How to See the Best of California in Only 7 Days

What to do: Another travel hack I used for this itinerary is making the return trip in a different direction. You’ll cap off your seven-day exploration of California by taking its most famous road: the PCH. You will have the entire day to get yourself back to LA for your departure the next day, so make sure you stop along the way and check out some of the amazing sights.

Where to stay: You’ll be arriving sometime in the evening in LA, so either pick a locale close to the airport or decide to do one more night out in Tinseltown, choosing an Airbnb or hotel in the area you want.

What to eat: I capped my trip off with some Ramen at Tsujita, but there are plenty of different things to choose from. Go crazy — it’s your last night!

So there you have it. The best of the best in California — all in just seven days. Obviously, there is so much more to explore if you have the time, but one silver lining is it will be easy to find an excuse to go back.

"It's Hard To Describe How Beautiful It Is": Travelers Are Sharing The Most Underrated Places To Visit In California

O ne of my favorite things about living in california is how easy it is to roadtrip around and explore tons of diverse and interesting places. recently, i asked members of the buzzfeed community to share some of their favorite hidden gem destinations in my home state, and they had so many great suggestions. here's what they had to say, plus a few of my own personal favorites:, 1. "criminally underrated: half moon bay/pacifica area. the entire drive is absolutely stunning, especially if you take the skyline route. the woods and the fresh air, and the absolute vibe of a pit stop at alice's restaurant is a must.", 2. "crestline is very cool. it’s near lake arrowhead, just before big bear. similar vibe, but it's nowhere near as crowded.", 3. "monterey such an amazingly beautiful place, and the aquarium there is top-notch and right on the water.", 4. "solvang. it's a gorgeous drive and a great town.", 5. A Total Solar Eclipse Is Coming. Here’s What You Need to Know.

These are answers to common questions about the April 8 eclipse, and we’re offering you a place to pose more of them.

  • Share full article

The sun flares at the edge of the moon during a total eclipse.

By Katrina Miller

On April 8, North America will experience its second total solar eclipse in seven years. The moon will glide over the surface of our sun, casting a shadow over a swath of Earth below. Along this path, the world will turn dark as night.

Skywatchers in Mexico will be the first to see the eclipse on the mainland. From there, the show will slide north, entering the United States through Texas, then proceeding northeast before concluding for most people off the coast of Canada.

Why eclipses happen is simple: the moon comes between us and the sun. But they are also complicated. So if you’ve forgotten all of your eclipse facts, tips and how-to’s since 2017, we’re here to explain it for you.

But before we dive in, there is one thing to know that is more important than anything else: It is never safe to look directly at the sun during an eclipse (except for the few moments when the moon has fully obscured its surface). At all other times, watch the event through protective eye equipment . Read on to learn about how to watch an eclipse safely.

What is a total solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon orients itself between Earth and the sun, shielding the solar surface from our view.

In cosmic terms, it is unusual that this happens: the moon is about 400 times smaller than the sun, but it is about 400 times closer to us. That means that when these two celestial bodies are aligned, they appear to be the same size in the sky.

What other types of eclipses are there?

Annular solar eclipses occur when the moon is farther from Earth and appears too small to completely shield the sun’s surface. Instead, the outer part of the solar disk remains uncovered — a “ring of fire” in the sky.

Partial solar eclipses happen when Earth, the moon and the sun are imperfectly aligned. The moon only obscures a chunk of the sun. There will be two in 2025.

Earth can also get between the moon and the sun, creating a lunar eclipse. This can be observed once or twice a year .

How dark will it be during the eclipse?

In any given place along the eclipse path , the event will last around two hours or more.

The event will commence with a partial solar eclipse, as the moon takes a small bite out of the sun’s edge, then consumes more and more of its surface. According to NASA , this can last anywhere from 70 to 80 minutes.

The phase of the eclipse where the moon has completely blocked the sun’s surface is called totality. This is the only time the event can be viewed with the naked eye.

The length of totality varies by location. In April, some places will experience this phase for more than four minutes; others, for only one to two minutes.

During totality, the sky will get dark as night and the temperature will drop. Wispy white strings of light from the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will suddenly be visible. Lucky viewers may even spot a thin, reddish-pink circle around the edge of the moon. That’s the chromosphere, an atmospheric layer below the sun’s corona. Its color comes from the presence of hydrogen throughout the layer.

After totality, the sun will slowly peek out from behind the moon again — another partial eclipse that will last the same amount of time as the first one. The moon will recede until the sun is back to normal brightness in our sky.

How can I watch the solar eclipse safely?

In general, avoid looking directly at the sun without special equipment to protect your eyes. Inexpensive options for watching the eclipse include paper solar viewers and glasses. If you are using equipment purchased for a past solar eclipse, make sure to inspect it. Toss anything with scratches or other signs of damage.

According to NASA , it is not safe to look at the sun through any optical device while using paper glasses or viewers. To watch the eclipse through cameras, binoculars or telescopes, buy a special solar filter.

The only time you can view a solar eclipse with the naked eye is during the moments of totality. Once the moon begins to reveal the surface of the sun again, return to watching the event through protective equipment to avoid injury.

What happens if I look at the eclipse without protection?

In general, staring directly at the sun, even for a few seconds, can cause permanent damage to your eyes . This can range from blurry or distorted vision to something even more serious, like blind spots. Because there are no pain receptors in the retina, you won’t feel it while it’s happening.

The same is true during an eclipse — except during the brief moments of totality, when the moon has hidden the face of the sun. At all other times, use protective eye equipment to view the event.

What do I do if I can’t find eclipse glasses?

If it’s too late to get glasses or viewers, there’s always a do-it-yourself option: a pinhole camera to indirectly experience the eclipse. You can create one using cardstock , a cardboard box , a kitchen strainer or even your fingers . These designs project an image of the eclipse onto the ground or some other surface that is safe to look at.

Where are the best places to watch the eclipse?

The total eclipse will sweep across large portions of Mexico, the United States and eastern Canada. For the most dramatic show, it’s best to experience the eclipse along the path of totality , which is where the moon will completely blot out the sun.

The Path of the Eclipse

On April 8, a total solar eclipse will cross North America from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada. Viewers outside the path of the total eclipse will see a partial eclipse, if the sky is clear .

Viewers near Mazatlán, a beach town on the Pacific shoreline of Mexico, will be the first place to experience totality on North America’s mainland. Various sites in Mexico along the eclipse’s path will experience the longest duration of totality — as long as four minutes and 29 seconds.

Cities across the United States, including Dallas, Indianapolis and Cleveland, will most likely be hot spots for the upcoming eclipse. Other notable locations include Carbondale, Ill., which also saw totality during the solar eclipse in 2017; small towns west of Austin, Texas, which are projected to have some of the best weather in the country along the eclipse path; and Niagara Falls, if the skies are clear. Six provinces of Canada are in the path of totality, but many of them have a very cloudy outlook.

When does the eclipse begin and end?

The show begins at dawn, thousands of miles southwest of the Pacific shore of Mexico. The moon starts to conceal the sun near Mazatlán at 9:51 a.m. local time. Viewers near Mazatlán will experience totality at 11:07 a.m. for four minutes and 20 seconds.

Then the moon’s shadow will swoop through Mexico, crossing over the Texas border at 1:10 p.m. Eastern time. Totality in the United States will start at 2:27 p.m. and end at 3:33 p.m. Eastern time.

Canadians will experience the solar eclipse in the afternoon for nearly three hours. The eclipse concludes beyond Canada’s boundaries when the sun sets over the Atlantic Ocean.

Video player loading

How long will the eclipse last?

The duration of totality depends on how far a given location on Earth is from the moon. Places with the longest totality are closest to the moon and farther from the sun. The speed of the lunar shadow is slowest over spots with the longest totality.

In April, the longest period of totality will occur over Durango, a state in Mexico, for a total of four minutes and 29 seconds. Along the centerline, the location of shortest totality on land is on the eastern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, for about two minutes and 54 seconds. But totality is even shorter along the edges of the total eclipse path; in some places, it lasts less than a minute.

How fast does the eclipse move?

Solar eclipses may seem to happen slowly, but the moon’s shadow is racing across the surface of Earth. Exact speeds vary by location. Eclipse calculators estimate the shadow will move between about 1,560 m.p.h. and 1,600 m.p.h. through Mexico, and more than 3,000 m.p.h. by the time it exits the United States. The eclipse will reach speeds exceeding 6,000 m.p.h. over the Atlantic Ocean.

When was the last total solar eclipse in the United States?

According to the American Astronomical Society , total solar eclipses happen once every year or so, but they can only be viewed along a narrow path on Earth’s surface. Many occur over water or other places that can be difficult to reach. A given location will experience totality once in about 400 years.

But some places get lucky: Carbondale, a college town in southern Illinois, saw the total solar eclipse in the United States on Aug. 21, 2017, and will experience another one this April. San Antonio experienced an annular eclipse last October, and is also in the path of totality for this year’s eclipse.

Do other planets experience solar eclipses?

Yes, any planet in our solar system with a moon can experience a solar eclipse. In February, a Martian rover captured Phobos , one of the red planet’s moons, transiting the sun.

The moons on other planets, though, appear either smaller or larger than the sun in the sky . Only Earth has a moon just the right size and at just the right distance to produce the unique effects of totality.

How will things on Earth change during the eclipse?

As the eclipse approaches its maximum phase, the air will get cooler, the sky will grow dimmer, shadows will sharpen and you might notice images of crescents — tiny projections of the eclipse — within them. Along the path of totality, the world will go dark while the moon inches toward perfect alignment with Earth and the sun.

Animals will also react to the solar eclipse. Bees stop buzzing , birds stop whistling and crickets begin chirping. Some pets may express confusion . Even plants are affected, scientists found after the solar eclipse in 2017 . They have diminished rates of photosynthesis and water loss similar to, though not as extreme as, what happens at night.

What if I can’t get to the path of totality?

Viewers in locations away from the eclipse path will see the moon partially blot out the sun, though how perceptible the effects are depends on the site’s distance from the centerline. (The closer you are, the more remarkable it will be.) Still, it won’t be quite like experiencing the eclipse during totality.

Remember that you should always wear protective eye equipment while watching a partial eclipse.

If you can’t make it to the path of totality but still want to experience it, many organizations are providing live video streams of the eclipse, including NASA and Time and Date . The Exploratorium, a museum in San Francisco, will also offer a sonification of the eclipse and a broadcast in Spanish.

What have we learned from solar eclipses?

In the 1800s, a French astronomer discovered the element helium by studying the spectrum of sunlight emitted during an eclipse. These events also allowed the first scientific observations of coronal mass ejections — violent expulsions of plasma from the sun’s corona — which can cause power outages and communication disruptions on Earth. Scientists also confirmed Einstein’s theory of general relativity, which says that massive objects bend the fabric of space-time, during a solar eclipse in 1919.

And there is more to discover. This April, NASA plans to fly instruments on planes to capture images of the solar corona, and launch rockets to study how the drop in sunlight during an eclipse affects Earth’s atmosphere. A radio telescope in California will try to use the moon as a shield to measure emissions from individual sunspots .

The public is joining the fun, too. During the eclipse, a team of ham radio operators will beam signals across the country to study how solar disturbances can affect communications. Some people along the path of totality will record sounds from wildlife . Others will use their phones to snap pictures of the eclipse to help sketch out the shape of the solar disk .

An earlier version of this article referred imprecisely to eclipse on other worlds. Some appear larger than the sun in sky, they are not all partial eclipses.

Homes of Sean 'Diddy' Combs searched by federal officials, sources say

LOS ANGELES — Sean "Diddy" Combs is a subject of a federal investigation amid a wave of lawsuits that have been filed against the rap music mogul since November , a source familiar with the matter told NBC News on Monday.

Three women and a man have been interviewed by federal officials in Manhattan in relation to allegations of sex trafficking, sexual assault, and the solicitation and distribution of illegal narcotics and firearms, the source said. Interviews with three other subjects are also scheduled, the source said.

Four law enforcement sources told NBC News that federal agents with Homeland Security Investigations on Monday executed search warrants at Los Angeles and Miami properties belonging to Combs. The sources said the warrant is out of the Southern District of New York.

police investigate sean puff diddy combs

HSI confirmed in a statement that it "executed law enforcement actions" in New York as part of an ongoing investigation, along with teams in Los Angeles and Miami.

Homeland Security officials seized phones from Combs in Miami before he was scheduled to depart for a trip to the Bahamas, according to three law enforcement sources familiar with the warrant. Combs was in the Miami area when authorities executed the searches, sources said. It is not clear if Combs made the trip as planned.

Representatives for Combs, 54, did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment Monday.

Sean "Diddy" Combs

Series of allegations, lawsuits

News of a federal investigation comes after public scrutiny of Combs’ behavior after his former romantic partner, Cassie, accused him of physically and sexually abusing her for years. She made the allegations in a lawsuit filed late last year in New York under the New York Adult Survivors Act, which offered a one-year window for adult victims of sexual assault to come forward with civil claims regardless of the statute of limitations.

Cassie, whose full name is Casandra Ventura, settled with Combs on Nov. 17, the day after the suit was filed on terms that have not been disclosed.

Since then, three other women have come forward with lawsuits in the Southern District of New York alleging that they were sexually assaulted by Combs . Two of the women said they were teenagers at the time of the alleged assaults.

Douglas Wigdor, who represents Ventura and a Jane Doe who filed suit, said in a statement that the searches and investigation were hopefully the beginning of a process that “will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.”

“We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law,” Wigdor said.

An attorney for Joi Dickerson-Neal, one of Combs' accusers, declined to comment to NBC News.

Combs has denied each of the sexual assault allegations, calling them “sickening.”

A producer who worked for Combs between September 2022 and November 2023 filed a lawsuit in February alleging that Combs sexually harassed, drugged and threatened him for more than a year. The former employee, Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones, also alleged that he had video and audio evidence of Combs, his staff and others “engaging in serious illegal activity.”

Jones' attorney, Tyrone Blackburn, also represents Combs' accuser Liza Gardner. Blackburn said Monday that the federal investigation will not "prevent nor delay my clients’ pending and forthcoming actions for justice and resolution from the Combs RICO Enterprise.”

Shawn Holley, an attorney for Combs, previously denied Jones’ allegations and said that Combs’ team has “overwhelming, indisputable proof that his claims are complete lies.”

One person who said he frequents the Los Angeles neighborhood where a search happened expressed shock.

Ryan Mendelsohn, 20, who used to live in the area and still regularly visits a nearby friend, told reporters he would see parties at the home and women outside. Other homes had parties, too, but that home had people there and women outside until 6 a.m., which was not usual, he said.

“I drive by a lot, and I see that — a lot of girls, maybe five or six girls outside, some leaving, some not, some going in,” adding he also saw Black Chevy Suburban SUVs there.

“I never thought anything of it,” said Mendelsohn, who said he did not know Combs lived there until Monday’s news coverage. “But now, it’s crazy.”

Weapons charge

Combs has had a number of legal issues in the past , but has rarely faced criminal charges.

In 1999, Combs pleaded guilty to assaulting a record executive and was ordered to one day of anger management. That same year, Combs was accused of criminal possession of a weapon after a shooting at a New York nightclub.

Witnesses told law enforcement that they saw Combs with a firearm at the club and that rapper Shyne, real name Moses Barrow fired into the crowd. Combs was pulled over by police in a vehicle with then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, and a gun was found in the car. Combs was acquitted of weapons and bribery charges, and Shyne was found guilty of the club shooting at trial.

Since Ventura's suit and others have come forward accusing Combs of assault, the music mogul has been the center of scrutiny. He stepped down from his position as chairman of media network Revolt and Hulu pulled back from a planned reality series centered on his family.

March's Full Worm Moon wriggles its way through a subtle lunar eclipse in stunning photos

The Worm Moon underwent a slightly undramatic lunar eclipse on Sunday, March 24, two weeks before the main event: April's total solar eclipse.

one side of the silvery-grey surface of the moon is slightly darkened by a shadow

March's full moon, the Worm Moon, rose over Earth on Sunday, March 24, exactly two weeks before the total solar eclipse that will sweep over North America on April 8, 2024.

Not to be left out of the eclipse action, the Worm Moon was marked by a slightly less dramatic lunar eclipse . The moon slipped into the Earth's outer shadow, the penumbra , late Sunday night, early Monday morning.

Skywatchers in North America and South America were in the best position to spot this penumbral eclipse warm-up for the total solar eclipse main event next month, but that didn't stop skywatchers across the globe from capturing stunning images of the Worm Moon.

Related: March full moon 2024: The Worm Moon gets eclipsed   Read more: Lunar eclipses 2024: When, where & how to see them

Because the moon only dwells in the lighter outer shadow of the Earth during a penumbral eclipse, the effect of this event is a slight dimming of our lunar companion. That means that this event can be difficult to see and capture in an image.

NASA infographic shows the subtle difference between the moon normally and then during a penumbral eclipse

The subtle nature of the penumbral eclipse didn't stop Space.com reader Daniel McCartney from capturing it as it occurred over Syracuse, New York, early on Monday morning.

"I thought I would share a photo of the maximum penumbral lunar eclipse I took this morning over Syracuse, New York," Daniel wrote.

There was certainly no sign of the moon being darkened by Earth's shadow when the Worm Moon wriggled its way out from behind the EdgeNYC observation deck at Hudson Yards in New York in an image that was captured from Hoboken, New Jersey.

The full Worm Moon took on a more muted yellow hue when captured behind the spire of the Empire State Building also in New York City and seen from Hoboken.

X user and proud New York native Max Guliani captured footage of the Worm Moon rising next to another of the city's famous landmarks: Manhattan’s Two Bridges, which cross the East River.

Max also pictured the March full moon rising between the buildings of 42nd Street in New York City, sharing the image on his X feed.

San Francisco is home to a slightly more famous bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, which frames a cloud-shrouded, orange-glowing full moon in this stunning image.

Back on X, amateur photographer and astronomy/science hobbyist Susan Snow posted an incredible time-lapse video of the Worm Moon rising over the trees in England.

The worm turns!

The name "Worm Moon" was initially believed to refer to the appearance of earthworms in the soil, inviting birds to land and feed and act as a sign of oncoming Spring. This idea has been challenged by research historical research, according to Almanac , which suggests "Worm Moon" actually refers to a different sort of “worm”—beetle larvae. these creatures begin to emerge in March as the bark of trees thaws, destroying their winter hideouts.

There was nothing worm-like, be it beetle larvae or earthworms,  about the full moon as it appeared in the sky over Istanbul, Turkiye, on March 24, 2024. The giant, fiery red full moon was caught between the two spires of the Fatih Mosque.

The effect seen in this image almost replicates the red hue that the moon takes on during a total lunar eclipse , which occurs when the moon passes into the darker inner region of Earth's shadow, the umbra.

The nearly full moon was a slightly less intimidating sight for a joyous bystander in L'Aquila, Italy, on Saturday evening.

Earth's shadow wasn't the only thing eclipsing the full moon on Sunday evening. An airplane unintentionally obscures a tiny portion of the full moon as it is captured over Istanbul, Turkiye.

X user Rami Ammoun , who goes by the handle "@rami_astro," captured a stunningly bright image of the Worm Moon from Nashville, Tennesse.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Did you know

  • Trivia Mini-Kong's name was revealed on toy lines as "Suko" which likely carries significant meaning, as when written phonetically in Japanese, it can be broken down into two characters that ultimately mean, "Essential Child." Interestingly, Suko is typically a female name in Japanese. Suko, perhaps coincidentally, is a Filipino word for "surrender."
