Ministry (formed in 1981) is a popular American industrial metal band, founded by lead singer Al Jourgensen in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.

Al Jourgensen, Ministry’s figurehead and only member to have continued from the start had been in a number of bands before Ministry including Special Affect and Silly Charmichaels, however along with Stephen George on drums and Robert Roberts and John Davies on keyboard, decided to create a new wave synth pop outfit. The band released four 12” singles on Wax Trax! Records including the fan favourite “Everyday is Halloween” and their debut LP “With Sympathy” in 1983 and became popular for their arena filling sound.

The band’s follow-up “Twitch” (1986) saw Jourgensen split with George and take a more solo-approach to the album, and 1988’s “The Land of Rape and Honey” saw the lead singer re-kindle his love or the electric guitar and continue the band’s success in the underground music scene. “The Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste” released in 1989 saw the band tour with a 10-piece band and saw Al Jourgensen expand his musical ideas through side-projects and collaborations, honing in on Ministry’s sound, including RevCo and Lard.

The 1991 album “Psalm 69” represented Ministry’s move to the mainstream, with the notable singles “Jesus Build My Hotrod” and “Just One Fix” the latter of which was a collaboration with poet and Beatnik novelist William Burroughs, the album was a huge hit and enough to secure the band second billing at Lollapalooza.

Plagued by arrests and drug problems Ministry didn’t release their next album “Filth Pig” until 1996 and saw the distinctly-Ministry synthesisers and samples removed and replaced with distorted guitar with heavy bass and drums. “Dark Side of the Spoon” released in 1999 diversified the band’s sound further adding various melodic and inorganic accoutrements to their electro-metal mix, the single “Bad Blood” from the album appeared in the film The Matrix and ended up being nominated for a Grammy Award.

Due to disputes with Warner Bros. Records the band parted ways and had their planned albums “Live Psalm 69”, “Sphinctour” and “ClittourUS” cancelled. In 2001 Jourgensen was bitted by a venomous spider and nearly had to have his arm amputated, as a result he had one of those life-restructuring moments we’re all capable of and vowed to kick his heroin addiction. With the help of saxophonist Max Brody, Ministry released the album “Animositisomina” on Sanctuary Records in 2003, the album, however didn’t perform well commercially, with singles cancelled before being released.

Ministry’s next released cemented and developed the industrial metal approach of the electro-metal sound with the politically angst “Houses of the Molé” in 2004, followed shortly after by 2006’s “Rio Grande Blood” released on Jourgensen’s own 13th Planet Records. The single “Lieslieslies” from “Rio Grane Blood” was nominated for the Best Metal Performance and the 49th annual Grammy Awards.

Ministry’s more recent years have seen the release of “The Last Sucker” in 2007, the cover and remix album “Cover Up” in 2008 and “Undercover” in 2010 before a hiatus that lasted until 2011. Ministry’s album “From Beer to Eternity” (2011) was dedicated to guitarist Mike Scaccia who died of an on-stage heart attack, and the band toured in support of the album.

Live reviews

I was lured into seeing this band by a decadent friend of mine who wanted to expose me to the dark side of life cause they weren't on my radar. I'm more of an old school Pepper, Fishbone, P-Funk/Funkadelic/Meters fan, but am open to anything. Caught these animals in H-town for the first time in '07 and didn't know shizzle about their chaotic dizzle (whatever the hell that means). So, we proceeded to get loaded prior to the show & after imbibing in way too many bong hits along w/ rot gut whisky shots, we meandered into the arena where I immediately noticed chicken wire surrounding the stage. This made me chuckle because I thought of the Blues Brother Movie scene where they play in a country bar. Once Ministry exploded on stage it was utter chaos, w/ a mosh pit the size of Texas invading the entire standing room area. I became mesmerized by the chaos and slowly made my way to the front once I discovered some stage crew musician/roadie/felon/serial killer waving a chainsaw onstage. Unfortunately I inadvertently wondered into the pit and got a whiplash shove while staring in awe at the debauchery taking place on stage. So, I turned around - grabbed the SOB who shoved me, and proceeded to allow my face to become his/her punching bag! I got cold cocked at least 3-5 times, knocked unconscious to the pit floor, where this upstanding citizen proceeded to kick me in the face a few more times (none of which I remember). Somehow I made it out alive, I believe someone hoisted me up and guided me to the bathroom where I looked into the mirror and saw Frankenstein looking back at me. 2 black eyes, chipped teeth, broken watch, 1 week off from work to recover, and damn near a divorce once my lovelyhwife arrived to take Frankenstein home (see picture - that's real). That being said, it was an awesome show. Word of advice, don't get waisted and do the fist pump to this type of band - I thought it would've been accepted like at the Funk concerts I attend. And to the human vermin who sucker punched my ass - I hope you rot in hell you walking cretin. Your so lucky I'z waisted and not aware of the possibility of such a cowardly act. Next time bro - make it fare and look me in the eye before you sneak a vicious blow you toughguy. My buddy tells me my first mistake was separating from the group, 2nd mistake was doing the fist pump which apparently put a target on my head, and 3rd mistake is no where the freakin mosh pit's boundaries are. Other than that, damn good show!

On the 17th of July 2016, I had the pleasure to see Ministry live at the Agora Theater & Ballroom, Cleveland OH. There was a plethora of bands playing that evening including Green Jello and Helmet. It was a great evening of music hosted by the Agora. I must say, the sound system at the Agora provides for an excellent music experience. All the opening bands put on a great performance. Watching Helmet make their return to the stage was amazing. I only wished the would have played a bit longer. Ministry by far put on the best show I have see from them yet. Al and the band has finally decided to go back into their back catalog and play some of their best tracks of their career. This was probably the best setlist. My hats of to Ministry for providing fans from new and old with an amazing industrial metal showcase worthy of driving two and a half hours one way. Another plus was that I had to opportunity to meet Sin Quirin and talk about his career and music projects. Not only is he a great guitarist, he was very humble and appreciative of the words we exchanged. If you want to see Ministry, this is the time to do so for this is the best Ministry yet. Thank you for the great mix of old and new songs!

The last time I saw the metal band Ministry was at The Forum in London more than ten years ago, so when they came to Manchester Academy in 2012 I was super excited to be able to see them again.

Ministry came on stage and began their set with "Just One Fix." They continued with hit after hit, including "Filth Pig", "Lava", "So What" and finished with "Thieves" which is one of my all time favourite Ministry songs. Al Jourgensen, the lead singer, kept the audience going by shouting, pointing at us, and jumping up and down. His energy worked because the audience was wild! Jourgensen has talent and his voice, as always, was beautiful when accompanied by the saxophone.

The best part of the show, for me anyway, was when they played "Supernaut" in their encore. I really enjoyed myself, and so did the rest of the packed venue.

Ministry has been one of my favorites for a couple of decades and it was exciting to be 15 feet away from the stage. So, now I've seen Ministry twice, believe it or not, I would see the band again. Hopefully there will be another world tour, similar to the DeFiBriLaTouR Tour, which is when I saw them the second time and, in my opinion, was the best of two really good live shows.

Did NOT LIKE the first GOD something and other band

Was ok with the second Chelsea something and other band

LOVED Ministry. Have seen them many times.

LOVED their hysterical and thought provoking politically charged message of the Politics of Trump Era and likens his views on Nazi Germany when Germany was Nazi. In particular, the scene where Trump is depicted as a Tyrannosaurus;a very large bipedal carnivorous dinosaur of the late Cretaceous period, with powerful jaws and small clawlike front legs, with head cocked back and mouth eide open spewing fire towards crooked Hillary who is depicted as Godzilla spewing rays. You can't help but laugh.

I bought a Ministry $40 Tee which is pricey but, is the going rate for a concert tee these days. Outside, a $15 knockoff tee can be had by the legless wheelchair bound man selling his stock. Be forewarned, you get what you pay for.

If I hadn't had to work the next day, I'd have kicked it at late bar for planet earth night.

Riviera badly needs a rehab. Just saying but, their sound system is decent considering the venue.

Moody metal rockers Ministry have experienced a varied and interesting career featuring beginnings in synth pop before finding industrial metal as well as various lineup changes. However anybody who has seen the band recently will agree that the current quintet seem to be the most succinct and skilled thus far.

They have a discography that now spans thirty years so the selection process is complex yet by the sounds of the audience's cheers they have made good decisions. They play with such intensity though that the crowd is instantly engaged with the musicians and the music almost becomes secondary as it is equally thrilling to watch them work. There are big cheers though for early singles such as '99 Percenters' and 'Watch Yourself'. The band use this energy to attack the instruments with even more ferocity.

They have the crowd just where they want them by the time the encore comes and they drop 'N.W.O' and 'Just One Fix' in quick succession. A band that has been through a difficult past shows this evening they have a bright future.

Ministry may be more guitar heavy now than they were when they started out in the '80's as more of an experimental/mod/industrial band. However, their set didn't disappoint one bit, being a great mix of electronica, screaming guitars, growling vocals and thumping, turbulent drums! As Rob Zombie is often wont to display a movie style backdrop during his concerts, so did Ministry provide those theatrics, undoubtedly a medium which inspired Zombie to use the same type of props himself. Instead of a Halloween movie motif, however, Ministry included a backdrop with drug and politically charged scenes that were equally disturbing in their own way. The band charged through approximately fourteen songs all told in their set with hardly a break in between. One part I especially liked was the lighting effects which at one point showed drummer AAron "Shredder" Rossi silhouetted with fog machine effects in force simultaneously!

Only if I can upload a picture.

If I can't upload a picture, then my absolutely phenomenal once in a lifetime story would never make sense.

Except to Sin, the two Christian ladies, myself and whoever else thought that this concert was, indeed, a remarkable night from the very onset of it.

My only disappointment was that they did not play Psalm 69 in honour of this momentous occasion.

That is an absolute lack of foresight. However, the so SO WHAT conundrum was solved. There was a longstanding debate about that ...

... I did, however, trade the two tickets I was given for two Ministry t-shirts while (kind of) screaming "PRAISE JESUS". Cuz that's where I got my money from ... I got the money from Jesus.

And now I'm home recuperating from seeing the only Ministry to attend EVER as well as agreeing that it's very true indeed ... our beloved Ministry has only improved with age.

Max blessings.

Have been to many Ministry concerts through the years. All of them have been amazing. Meet and greet once after Al releaseed his book. They are awesome musicians and super friendly people. I always have a blast seeing them live and rarely ever miss a show. One of my favorite concerts was Revco opening for Ministry in 2002. It was hands down the loudest concert ever! My ears are ringing to this day :) After the show my boyfriend and his buddy sounded like they had extreme lisps. I was laughing my butt off in the backseat. Wasn't sure if my ears were making them sound like that or their ears were so jacked that it caused them to talk that way. It was extremely amusing to me. Uncle Al kept calling Revco 'The fluff band opening for Ministry'. Was blown away.

I found that trying to sing along with the newer material was a bit difficult as, I know mostly the older stuff. But, I was there to support the band, be entertained and, bang my head , and dance so, that was totally the case.

If you like their music, and enjoy head banging, totally worth the while. I’d go see them again in a heartbeat.

Al Jorgensen, is apparently not anywhere near as energetic as before but , shit, give he guy some credit! He’s 60! I WISH, my parents had his energy at this age! Haha.

It was a mighty good show. Props were cool, and visually very stimulating. But most importantly, they sounded really together. ( drummer was unreal)

If it doubt, go. Just go. Was so much fun

I want to start by saying I absolutely love Ministry. Have seen them many times, and always have a good experience. That said, when I saw them in Denver, Al was so effed up he could barely stand. Started rambling on about stuff and the band had to prop him up and just keep the show moving along.

The show in total was great. Sixxes was better than expected, Laibach was stunning, and the current Ministry lineup was amazing. They played the hell out of it. I was a little disappointed by Al being as messed up as he was. As a musician myself, I understand being a bit buzzed for the show, and would expect a little partying, but this went a ways beyond that. Pace yourself, Al! And keep on playing.

Ministry Announces Spring 2023 Headline Tour Dates With Gary Numan And Front Line Assembly

  • February 6, 2023
  • Alice Teeple

Industrial titans  Ministry will be hitting the road with headlining tour dates this spring, bringing Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly along for the ride. Additionally, frontman Al Jourgensen is currently beginning work on the band’s sixteenth album – more details forthcoming.

The 2023 appearances come after a wildly successful  “ Industrial Strength Tour ” throughout 2022, continuing the career retrospective of Ministry’s greatest works. Songs each night of the tour will include selects from across the span of Ministry’s full catalogue, including the latest works from critically-acclaimed 2021 album Moral Hygiene.

The spring tour kicks off April 20 in Reno, Nevada and will end with an anticipated performance at the Sick New World Fest in Las Vegas on May 13. Jourgensen will be joined onstage by drummer Roy Mayora ,  guitarists Cesar Soto and Monte Pittman, bassist Paul D’Amour and keyboardist John Bechdel.

This tour is in addition to their previously-announced summer run, opening for Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, which will kick off August 24.

Born in 1981 in Chicago, Ministry has been the lifetime passion project of founder Al Jourgensen, considered to be the pioneer of industrial music. In its early days, Ministry was identifiable by its heavy synth-pop material in line with the new sounds and technology that were being developed in the ‘80s. Ministry’s output began with four 12” singles on Wax Trax! Records in 1981 before the first LP  With Sympathy  in 1983 via Arista Records. As time progressed however, so did Ministry, quickly developing a harsher, and more stylized sound that the band soon became infamous for on seminal albums  Twitch  (1986),  The Land of Rape and Honey  (1988), and  The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste (1989).

Tickets go on sale Friday, February 10 at local time here.

ABOUT MINISTRY

With the release of Psalm 69: The Way to Succeed and The Way to Suck Eggs (1992), Ministry hit an all-time high in the mainstream musical realm and received its first Grammy nomination. In total, Ministry has been nominated for a Grammy award six times. Eight more albums would follow before an indefinite break in 2013, only to be unearthed again in 2018 with AmeriKKKant , continuing to reflect Jourgensen’s views on the frightening state of society and politics. The band’s latest effort, Moral Hygiene, came out in 2021 on Nuclear Blast Records.

AL JOURGENSEN Announces MINISTRY Band Lineup For 'The Industrial Strength Tour'

With less than four months until the kickoff of the much-anticipated "Industrial Strength Tour" on October 3, MINISTRY has announced the lineup of the band that will be appearing on the 23-date trek.

In addition to MINISTRY creator and frontman Al Jourgensen (vocals, guitar),the band will include Roy Mayorga (drums; STONE SOUR , HELLYEAH), Paul D'Amour (bass; ex- TOOL ), Cesar Soto (guitar), Monte Pittman (guitar; Madonna , PRONG ) and John Bechdel (keyboards; FEAR FACTORY ). In the coming weeks, MINISTRY 's official social media pages will share thoughts from each of the members on getting back on the road and what fans can expect.

"The Industrial Strength Tour" kicks off October 3, 2021 in Albuquerque and will run through November 3, 2021 in Seattle, with many dates quickly selling out. The night will include special guests HELMET and FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY for this one-of-a-kind celebration that honors not only the 40th anniversary of MINISTRY in 2021 but also the 30th anniversary of revolutionary album "The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste" . Show dates will also include brand-new material from MINISTRY 's upcoming 15th studio album, with news to be announced soon about its release.

Mayorga previously played with MINISTRY from 2016 to 2017 and appeared on the "AmericaKKKant" album, which came out in March 2018.

Regarding how Roy ended up playing drums on "AmericaKKKant" , Jourgensen told SoCalMusicToday.com , "[ 'AmericaKKKant' is] the first organic album I've recorded since, like, 1994. The last time I was in the studio with a full band was on the album 'Filth Pig' . It's been a long time — usually it's just me and an engineer in a windowless room with a computer. So how it worked out, this is kind of a long story but bear with me... So during the SURGICAL METH MACHINE project, I didn't want to do a MINISTRY record as my guitarist [ Mike Scaccia ] just passed away and he was my best friend for 25 years, so MINISTRY wasn't in the forefront of my mind. I was informed by my new manager that MINISTRY was contractually obligated to play some shows in Europe. I really didn't want to do that, but if I didn't, I would get sued. So I did the MINISTRY thing and I was able to get Roy and some others to play on this tour of Europe and we fulfilled our obligation. About half way through to fulfill this, we realized we were sounding pretty damn good, so when we got back, I booked a week's worth of studio time, and myself, Roy and others just jammed to see what we could come up with. Like I said, it's been a long time since I jammed with a band in the studio, and within about a week, we had about 75-80 percent of this album knocked out. We knocked out all the templates or skeletons for the songs in a week, then I spent about six months layering textures on top of that. But this sounds much more organic than other recent MINISTRY because we did it as a band."

9/13/23 – Riverbend Music Center, 6295 Kellogg Ave, Cincinnati, OH – opening for Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie – Buy Tickets

Industrial juggernauts Ministry are heading back out on the road in 2023 with a series of spring headlining dates, bringing long-time friends Gary Numan and Front Line Assembly along for the ride.

The tour kicks off April 20 in Reno, Nevada and will end with an anticipated performance at the Sick New World Fest in Las Vegas on May 13.

Tickets for all headline dates go on sale Friday, February 10 at 10 AM local time in all markets. Find more information and ticketing links at ministryband.com .

Ministry also previously announced a summer run opening for Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper, kicking off August 24. See all upcoming Ministry tour dates below.

The 2023 appearances come after a wildly successful “Industrial Strength Tour” throughout 2022 and will continue to be a career retrospective of Ministry’s greatest works, as the band enters its fifth decade with frontman and creator Al Jourgensen continuing to churn out his indelible missives on the state of the world and society as we know it.

Songs each night of the tour will include selects from across the span of Ministry’s full catalog including the latest works from 2021 album Moral Hygiene, which was added to many “best of the year” lists, including Loudwire, Consequence Of Sound, Punk News and XS Rock (where it was ranked the #1 album of the year).

Jourgensen has re-entered the studio and is currently beginning work on Ministry’s 16th album – more details will be coming soon.

For the upcoming tour dates, Jourgensen will be joined by band members drummer Roy Mayora, guitarists Cesar Soto and Monte Pittman, bassist Paul D’Amour and keyboardist John Bechdel.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Traveler Reviews

This tour exceeded our expectations. Nikolai (Nick), our tour guide, was very knowledgeable, thorough, and has a great personality. He didn't take shortcuts and really covered everything that was on the agenda in great detail. We saw beautiful metro stations and learned the history behind them, including many of the murals and designs.

We did the tour with Anna her knowledge and understanding of the History surrounding the metro brought the tour alive. Well done Anna!
