David Willey took three wickets in his final England appearance.

10th over: Pakistan 43-2 (Babar 32, Rizwan 9) Babar is squared up by a good delivery from Woakes, but that’s a rare blemish in what has been so far been a gorgeous innings. After four dot balls, he clips Woakes elegantly through midwicket for his sixth boundary.

9th over: Pakistan 38-2 (Babar 27, Rizwan 9) Willey is bowling very straight. Only the odd ball is swinging but that’s enough to keep the right-handers on alert. Three low-risk singles from the over.

That’s Willey’s Powerplay work over for the tournament. He took six wickets in the first 10 overs at this World Cup – only Marco Jansen and Dilshan Madushanka have more.

8th over: Pakistan 35-2 (Babar 25, Rizwan 8) Woakes isn’t bowling brilliantly here. A short ball is pulled contemptuously for four, flashing past midwicket before you could say “get that filth out of my sight”. The commentators reckon this chase is achievable for Pakistan as there is likely to be dew later on.

Now, this has nothing to do with England v Pakistan at the 2023 World Cup, but some stats are too good not to share. While doing some research for a Nessun Dorma draft on the 1992 World Cup , I totted up Dipak Patel’s figures during the 15-over Powerplay at the start of an innings. In that tournament Patel became the first spinner in ODI history to regularly open the bowling, and his combined figures in the 15 overs were 47-7-106-4. In the Powerplay!

7th over: Pakistan 30-2 (Babar 20, Rizwan 8) You can stick a Q next to New Zealand’s name: they have officially qualified for the semi-finals . Realistically they did so two days ago, but it’s always nice when things are confirmed. New Zealand will play India, who they beat in the 2019 semi-final, in Mumbai on Wednesday.

A bit of semi-final news South Africa have confirmed that Temba Bavuma has a hamstring strain and will be monitored over the next few days. Why the hell did he stay on the field yesterday?

6th over: Pakistan 28-2 (Babar 20, Rizwan 6) Babar drives Woakes between extra cover and mid-off for four; it was in the air but perfectly placed. The next ball is poor: short, wide and slammed to the cover fence. Babar is off to an unusually fast start, 20 from 20 balls.

“The disintegration and subsequent slight re-emergence of the England ODI side during this tournament feels like the break-up of a long-term romantic relationship,” weeps Tom Van der Gucht. “One where the nagging frustrations and pettyy disagreements have built up to a massive row where all grievances were aired in a fiery manner involving recriminations and mudslinging from which there’s no return.

“Then, after hitting this painful low point and agreeing it’s over, once calm again, you reconnect enough whilst packing up and moving out to remember what made your relationship special in the first place. But, it’s too late. You’ve grown apart... You’ve grown as individuals... You’ve grown take each other for granted. However, there’s no turning back now.

“It’s time to move on. A sad time. Yet, something new and exciting waits on the horizon... And, after a few awkward early dates as you get to know each other as well as a few abandoned romances that weren’t really up to it, you might just find true love again... Here’s to the next iteration of the England ODI team.”

Have you been watching Rescue Me again?

5th over: Pakistan 18-2 (Babar 10, Rizwan 6) David Willey in wicketless over shock. This is a bittersweet ending to his England career, but it’s so good that he finally got to a) play and b) perform at a World Cup.

“It was a pleasure watching this team (even as an Indian fan),” writes Anul Kanhere. “The audacity and danger it exuded. The remarkable transformation from 2015, that run to the 2016 T20 World Cup final where one man’s bat stole the show, the menace of the batting that stretched to the last man and broke scoring records at will, the ability to trust a young rookie bowler, the resurgence after their backs were to the wall on 2019 and the nerve and sheer bloody-mindedness to emerge victorious in the greatest one-day game ever.

“This team’s glorious heights will more than compensate for the chaos that has enveloped them for now. All good things come to an end. I think they exhausted their fairytale four years ago. Now to rebuild and push the game further. ‘If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same.’”

Nicely put. I’d dispute only one thing: 2019 was the greatest finish to an ODI, but as a 100-over game (okay, 102 overs) I don’t think it comes close to the 1999 semi-final between Australia and South Africa.

4th over: Pakistan 17-2 (Babar 9, Rizwan 6) Muhammad Rizwan clips Woakes stylishly through midwicket for four. In other news, Australia have warmed up for Thursday’s semi-final against South Africa by beating Bangladesh. Mitchell Marsh clattered 177 not out.

The result also means England have effectively, though not mathematically, qualified for the 2027 Champions Trophy. It’s nice when you move into a new house and the previous owners have left you something.

3rd over: Pakistan 10-2 (Babar 8, Rizwan 0) “Forget the Doors – surely Blur is all the bittersweet soundtrack you need,” says Max Willians. “To The End lyrics hitting different, as the kids say.

What happened to us? Soon it will be gone forever Infatuated only with ourselves And neither of us can think straight any more Well, you and I collapsed in love And it looks like we might have made it Yes it looks like we’ve made it to the end.

Look, I don’t choose what my subconscious decides to sing, which is why I’m so familiar with Cracking Up by Jesus & Mary Chain.

WICKET! Pakistan 10-2 (Fakhar c Stokes b Willey 1)

Ninety-nine ODI wickets for David Willey! Fakhar’s first big stroke is also his last, an on-the-run slap that doesn’t beat Stokes at mid-on.

David Willey removes Fakhar!

2nd over: Pakistan 10-1 (Fakhar 1, Babar 8) Chris Woakes shares the new ball. Since the revolution began in 2015 he has taken 125 wickets at 28, behind only Adil Rashid (a long way behind). He’s been England’s new-ball banker for almost all of that time, most memorably on that delirious morning at Edgbaston when England hammered Australia in the 2019 semi-final.

Fakhar Zaman, whose last innings was that monstrous 126 not out against New Zealand a week ago, takes a single from his fifth ball. He usually takes an over or two before he starts walloping everything for six.

A bit of reading for you: Barney Ronay’s Indian diary.

1st over: Pakistan 8-1 (Fakhar 0, Babar 8) That wicket puts Willey top of England’s bowling averages for the tournament with nine wickets at 22.55, a nose ahead of poor Reece Topley. He also bowled very well in India in the World T20 seven years ago.

The new batter Babar Azam gets going with two gorgeous boundaries, a straight drive and a wristy clip through midwicket.

WICKET! Pakistan 0-1 (Abdullah LBW b Willey 0)

There’s one of them! Abdullah Shafique has gone second ball, trapped in front by a classic inswinger to the right-hander. He flicked across the line, missed and was plumb in front.

Jos Buttler congratulates David Willey

For the last time as an England player , David Willey takes the new ball. He’s on 97 ODI wickets, and few would begrudge him three more.

Thanks Tanya, hello everyone. I can’t be the only person whose subconscious is singing The Doors. This is the end of an unimaginably glorious era of 50-over cricket for England. It started on a mundane Tuesday in June 2015, when England roared to a record total of 408/9 against New Zealand, and peaked on a balmy Sunday at Lord’s in July 2019.

“Whatever happens, this doesn’t define you,” said Ben Stokes to Jofra Archer before he bowled the Super Over. It was an ingenious, empathic line, and it was wrong. That over defines Archer, and that tournament defines the greatest England cricket team of my lifetime. It has ended miserably, but we should never forget how much joy they’ve given us.

Sky are talking about air pollution – which is great to see. Fabulous to see the international players federation FICA making a stand. At last, player safety being talked about in terms of heat, air pollution and climate change. And with that, I had you over to Rob Smyth who will take you through Pakistan’s chase. Thanks for all the emails, goodbye!

Pakistan need 338 in just the 6.4 overs to qualify for those semi-finals. They were good in the field today, Afridi’s slippery hands aside. Rauf was superb at the end.

“Anything above 260-270 would have been good,” says Eoin Morgan. Pakistan will do well to catch England today.

A much better performance by England, on a tricky pitch and against some high quality bowling. Stokes, just on the eve of his knee operation, has hit a purple patch; Root passed fifty without ever hitting text-book touch; Bairstow powered away at the top, Willey and Brook – at opposite ends of their careers – played rocketing cameos. Even Buttler managed 27. And all under the haze of difficult levels of air pollution.

Pakistan need 338 to win!

50th over: England 337-9 ( Woakes 4, Rashid 0) Willey plays a kind of hockey scoop off Wasim’s first ball for four. The next is lamped straight for six – what satisfaction! Wasim wobbles his lips like a frog. Four more - this time a golf shot, over wide long off for four. Wasim strikes back at the last, with two wickets in two – but misses out on a hat-trick as another zinger goes leg-side.

WICKET! Atkinson b Wasim 0 (England 336-9)

Gorgeous! An off stump zinger that bamboozles Atkinson. Wasim now on a hat-trick!

Gus Anderson is clean bowled.

WICKET! Willey c Iftikar b Wasim 15 (England 336-8)

Willey walks off with a smile, hair as immaculate as ever, after getting a leading edge well caught by Iftikar sprinting in at mid-on . A cameo to remember in his final innings.

David Willey leaves the field

49th over: England 322-7 ( Woakes 4, Willey 1) The zing bail is broken by Moeen’s wicket, we wait, and wait, while a replacement is tried. Two dots, a leg bye and a wicket in Rauf’s first four balls. Willey gets off the mark with a single in the last innings of his career. Woakes leans into an immaculate cover drive for four.

WICKET! Moeen b Rauf 8 (England 317-7)

Brilliant bowling from Rauf! A cutter that zips through the defences to tickle off stump.

Moeen Ali of England is bowled by Haris Rauf of Pakistan.

48th over: England 316-6 ( Moeen Ali 8, Woakes 0) Buttler pulls Wasim’s first ball for four, before the run-out, sent on his way with a mouthful from Rauf. An 88-metre six from Moeen brings the thrills before Diwali tomorrow.

WICKET! Buttler run-out (Rauf) 27 (England 308-6)

Astonishing fielding! England try to steal a single but Buttler is beaten by a screamer from Rauf at third.

England's captain Jos Buttler is run out.

47th over: England 304-5 ( Buttler 23, Moeen Ali 1) This is a much bigger score than people were predicting at the start of play – England have done well on this stop-start pitch. Brook reaches outside off stump, as if hoovering behind the sofa, to scoop Rauf for four and tumble onto his back in the process. Rauf respons with a yorker but finishes on the ground, breathing heavily. He drinks water as the physio comes out – but it doesn’t seem to be too serious as he continues. An overthrow brings England another single, and Rauf much annoyance. But next ball, he collects Brook.

WICKET! Brook c Afridi b Rauf 30 (England 302-5)

This time Afridi holds on! A super catch with both hands caught on the slide at mid-off, Brook done by a slower ball.

Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi takes a catch to dismiss England's Harry Brook off the bowling of Haris Rauf .

46th over: England 296-4 ( Buttler 22, Brook 24 Wasim starts with a wide but then manages to hold the horses, restricting England to just seven from the over

“Regarding Chris Fower’s scrambled eggs (Over 36), one word: ugh,” writes Jonah Sack. “Make curds, not slop.”

45th over: England 289-4 ( Buttler 20, Brook 20) An astonishing six from Brook who leans back and flicks, sending Afridi’s first ball back over his head for six. A full toss is fired through point for four and another full toss frying panned over long-on. Afridi’s ten overs have cost an eye-popping 72.

Pakistan's Mohammad Wasim Jr. can’t reach the ball as England's Harry Brook hits a six.

44th over: England 269-4 ( Buttler 19, Brook 1) Buttler is wearing his lucky boots. Gets a life when Wasim can’t hold onto a reverse-sweep at backward point – collects four. Then another as he lofts Shadab into the murk, and Rauf catches on the boundary, before throwing the ball into the air as he steps fully back over the rope, and catching it again in the playing surface. But in the slip between taking the catch and throwing it in the air, a rogue heel does for him.

England vs Pakistan: ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 – as it happened

All the updates as Pakistan lose to England and fail to reach the Cricket World Cup semifinals in Kolkata, India.

This blog is now closed. Thanks for joining us. These were the updates from the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match between England and Pakistan on November 11:

  • England beat Pakistan by 93 runs at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, with New Zealand sealing their place in the semifinals.
  • Pakistan, the 1992 champions, needed to beat England by 287 runs in Kolkata to squeeze into the semifinals at the Kiwis’ expense on net run rate.
  • England won the toss and elected to bat first, finishing their 50 overs on 337-9, with Ben Stokes making 84 in what could be his last one-day international. Pakistan were all out for 244 after 43.3 overs.
  • Jos Buttler’s side managed just three wins in their nine group matches to be eliminated from the tournament but they qualified for the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan with a top-eight finish.

It’s a wrap

Before the tournament began, not many would have picked England to be outside the final four.

However, the manner in which they failed to reach expectations will certainly be discussed and dissected over the next few weeks as the players prepare to return home.

Many would have wanted to see India play Pakistan in the semis when the Men in Green began to pick up momentum towards the tail-end of the tournament.

But once England won the toss and elected to bat, you could sense the deflation in body language as they failed to keep The Three Lions to a modest total, and never really fired with the bat in the chase.

We next cover the semifinals as India play New Zealand on November 15, while Australia do battle with South Africa on Nov 16.

Thank you for keeping us company today, and on behalf of Adam Hancock and Patrick Keddie, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.

‘Tournament hasn’t quite gone to plan’

Willey, for his three for 56, is adjudged the player of the match and had this to say, “The tournament hasn’t quite gone to plan as a whole, which is a big disappointment.”

“To be able to perform and enjoy my last few games, and get to 100 wickets as well, is a nice treat for me.”

‘It would have been nice to have that [100 ODI wickets] and make the final as well, but it wasn’t meant to be. When you look around the dressing room, we have a number of good players and we definitely underperformed here [in India].”

England win by 93 runs

After enduring a shocking run of losing six out of seven of their opening matches of the group stage, The Three Lions have come back strongly with convincing wins over the Netherlands, and now Pakistan.

With this result, they also secure passage into the 2025 Champions Trophy after finishing seventh in the standings.

The bowling was led by Willey’s three for 56, and was ably supported by Ali, Rashid and Atkinson who all pick up a brace of wickets.

Pakistan 244 all out. Rauf out!

Woakes is brought back to try and make the final breakthrough.

He succeeds shortly after as he entices Rauf with a full-pitched delivery which he goes after.

However, he ends up getting more elevation than distance as Stokes takes his third catch of the innings at long on to finally end the resistance.

43 overs. Pakistan 244-9

Rauf targets the mid-wicket region once more but ends up getting an inside edge and the ball travels behind to the fine leg boundary.

He is riding his luck out there as Willey switches tack to go round the wicket.

Rauf swings again and ends up getting another edge which flies to the third man boundary.

Wasim goes up and over the off side to find the rope at deep extra cover.

With that stroke, the 50-run partnership is brought up. Just ludicrous from these two.

42 overs. Pakistan 231-9

Rauf clobbers Atkinson’s first ball high over cow corner for six.

The Pakistan batsmen in the dugout must be wondering why they didn’t employ a similar tactic earlier in the innings?

Rauf, going for the big heave again, ends up top-edging a chance off the next ball, which goes right into the stratosphere.

Looks like the fielders are unable to spot it as the ball lands safely in the outfield.

This is quite the fight back from Pakistan after they threatened to be dismissed for a lot less earlier on.

41 overs. Pakistan 222-9

Wasim pulls handsomely over mid-wicket to find the boundary.

He attempts a scoop shot over fine leg off the fourth ball, with the ball hitting his pads.

The bowler goes up for leg before, but the umpire is unmoved.

England decide to review anyway.

Ball tracking confirms the ball was pitching outside leg, so England are out of reviews.

Wasim closes out the over with an audacious lofted shot straight down the ground which sails over the rope.

He even holds the pose for the cameras. Remarkable shot there by the lower-order batter.

40 overs. Pakistan 209-9

Rauf whacks the first ball from Atkinson over mid-wicket for a boundary.

He follows it up with a mighty hoick, which just flies over the boundary rider at deep square leg for half a dozen.

Rauf slams a big six over long-on to make it 16 off the over.

A little too late, but it does give the fans something to cheer about, given that the match is a bit of a foregone conclusion.

39 overs. Pakistan 193-9

Willey continues to keep it tight as the tail-enders can only scrape two from the over.

Pakistan 191-9. Shaheen out!

Atkinson is brought on to replace Rashid.

Shaheen continues his aggressive ways by drilling the first ball through the covers for four.

The bowler pitches it up on the fourth ball and traps Shaheen leg before, with the umpire signalling it out.

Shaheen is unconvinced and reviews the decision.

Ultra Edge confirms no contact, and ball tracking shows the ball going on to hit the stumps.

It is the end of an entertaining cameo as the last man Rauf makes his way out to the middle.

Pakistan 186-8. Salman out!

Shaheen decides it is time to let loose.

He swings at the first two deliveries, with both heading to parts of the ground he did not intend, but gets the desired result in the form of boundaries.

The momentum is quickly quenched though as Salman gets on strike and then ends up spooning a chance over to Stokes at mid-off to end his eventful innings.

England are two away now as Pakistan are staring at a hefty defeat.

With that, the new batter is Wasim as Willey reaches 100 ODI wickets in his career.

36 overs. Pakistan 177-7

Salman looks to attack Rashid’s third ball over the leg side, but instead spoons a chance over towards the fielder at point.

However, as has been the case throughout his innings, the ball falls safely away from danger.

Rashid ends his excellent spell with figures of 2 for 55.

35 overs. Pakistan 174-7

Willey, who picked up two wickets early on to set the tone for England’s bowling, is back on.

Amid the chaos out there, Salman reaches a well-deserved 50.

He has been one of the lone bright spots in this chase, along with Babar and Rizwan.

34 overs. Pakistan 171-7

Rashid continues to toy with the batsmen as they are restricted to just three off the over.

With that, we will have another drinks break.

33 overs. Pakistan 168-7

Salman decides to throw caution to the wind with wickets tumbling at the other end.

He dances down to smash Ali high over long on for another six.

He attempts another big shot, but ends up getting a fortuitous edge which continues behind to the third man boundary.

With that, 12 come off the over.

Pakistan 150-7. Shadab out!

Shadab looks to drive through the covers, but he misses completely as the ball turns in and proceeds to knock over the stumps.

England are three wickets away now as Shaheen comes out to bat.

The new batter doesn’t need much of a sighter as he clobbers Rashid high over cow corner for a maximum to end the over at 156 for 7.

That is the first six of the innings, which is quite mind-boggling when you consider it came from the number nine batsman.

Pakistan 145-6. Iftikhar out!

The new batter’s stay at the crease ends prematurely as he looked to lift Ali high over mid-wicket for a boundary.

He instead succeeds at top-edging a chance over to a back-peddling mid-off, who does well to hold onto the chance as he falls over.

The lower order is now exposed as Shadab makes his way to the middle.

The over ends with Pakistan 149 for 6.

30 overs. Pakistan 145-5

Salman continues to find the boundary as he sweeps Rashid competently behind of square to beat the fielder to the rope.

Salman ends the over with a chip over mid-on for four.

29 overs. Pakistan 135-5

Salman reverse-sweeps Ali’s first ball down to deep fine leg for a boundary.

The batsmen run singles off the final five balls to accumulate nine from the over.

Pakistan 126-5. Shakeel out!

Shakeel doesn’t pick the googly from Rashid as he looks to reverse-sweep him down to fine leg.

It’s a bad read from the batsman as Pakistan now have half of their side dismissed.

The over ends with the Men in Green 126 for 5 as Iftikhar makes his way to the crease.

27 overs. Pakistan 122-4

Seems like luck is on his side at the moment as Salman once again top-edges when going for the big shot.

This time, it is well over long-off, and despite the two fielders converging on it from opposite ends, the ball reaches the rope.

26 overs. Pakistan 116-4

Salman slog-sweeps Rashid, intending to go over cow corner.

However, he doesn’t quite find his timing as the ball flies high over and bounces just before the boundary and away from any danger.

Seven useful runs come off the over.

25 overs. Pakistan 108-4

Salman knocks the ball over to mid-off and attempts a single off the third ball.

The non-striker calls off the run, forcing his partner to retreat from almost halfway down as the throw is fired in at his end.

Luckily for him, he made his ground before the stumps were dislodged.

Salman then looks to drive the fifth ball through long-off but ends up hitting his partner on the glove.

Shakeel asks for some medical attention as he looks to be in pain.

The magic spray is brought out, and it looks like he will be able to continue.

No love lost between these two at the moment.

24 overs. Pakistan 104-4

Rashid is toying with the new batter as the ball spins in one direction and then the other.

Salman tries to hedge his bets with a pull over mid-wicket, but ends up top-edging the chance, with the ball luckily landing in no-man’s land.

In the end, three runs off the over.

Pakistan 100-4. Rizwan out!

Rizwan comes down the track to Ali, but completely misses the ball as it spins away and clatters into his middle and leg stump.

He goes down with cramp as well as England secure another prized wicket as Pakistan’s chase looks more and more bleak.

The new batter is Salman with the required rate at 8.65 an over.

The over ends with Pakistan 101 for 4.

Schedule, venues confirmed for England WTC25 tour of New Zealand

New Zealand Cricket have announced dates and locations for the England Test series, beginning in late November.

Hagley Oval in Christchurch, the Basin Reserve in Wellington, and Seddon Park in Hamilton will host New Zealand's three Tests, all part of the ongoing 2023-2025 World Test Championship.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive Scott Weenink says the early announcement of England's Test tour comes after a surge in popularity in the long format, where seven of the eight days of the two Tests against Australia earlier this year were sold out.

“In the past, there’s often been a lot of talk in New Zealand about the popularity of Test cricket - without that translating into ticket sales or viewership numbers,” he said.

“The difference over the past summer, and in terms of the upcoming Tests against England, is that the interest is being converted to bums on seats and is driving record viewership numbers.

“We’re looking forward to that continuing over the upcoming summer, and to welcoming the England team and their fans to the Tests, and of course all the Kiwi-based supporters as well.”

New Zealand become WTC21 Champions – Day 6 Highlights

Winners of the first World Test Championship cycle in 2021, New Zealand sit in third on the 2023-2025 table, having collected 50% of possible points in their campaign thus far. The Black Caps claimed maximum points in their home series against South Africa and collected a win in their away two-match series with Bangladesh, before falling to a 2-0 series defeat to current defending World Test Champions Australia.

World Test Championship standings

Both Australia and Sri Lanka women’s teams, alongside the Sri Lanka and Pakistan men’s teams, will also be touring in the 2024/2025 summer.

The remainder of New Zealand's home international schedule will be announced later in the year.
