15 Best Things to Do in Groningen (the Netherlands)

Groningen was once one of the most powerful cities in the Netherlands and now serves as the capital of the Groningen province in the north of the Netherlands.

With a population of approximately 200,000 it is one of the largest cities in the country.

The Hondsrug area where Groningen is situated has seen some form of settlement for many years, right back to 3950 BC, however the city didn’t develop hugely until the 13th century.

During this period it became a large trade centre and had a city wall.

During the 1600’s the University of Groningen was built and the city became increasingly focused around education.

As with many other Dutch cities, Groningen was devastated during WW2 but many of its iconic buildings remained untouched.

Today Groningen’s combination of historical architecture, fantastic museums, culture and nightlife make it a fantastic place to visit.

Lets explore the best things to do in Groningen :

1. Martinitoren

Martinitoren

The Martinitoren is an immense church steeple that towers over the city of Groningen and servers as the bell tower to the Martinikerk.

Standing at a colossal 97m this is one of the tallest buildings in the city and is considered a fine tourist attraction.

Constructed originally in the 1300’s, the tower has seen several iterations due to destruction and lighting storms.

The tower is built in a Romanesque style and has many similarities to the Dom Tower in Utrecht.

As one of the premier tourist attractions, you can climb the 260 steps to the top of the bell tower and take in the jaw-dropping panoramic views of the city of Groningen and the surrounding landscapes of the Netherlands.

2. Groninger Museum

Groninger Museum

Groningen features a host of interesting museums, but the Groninger museum is considered the finest, and is the most visited.

Situated in the centre of Groningen, the museum complex sits on the Zuiderhaven River and its design is just as fascinating as the collection it holds featuring an eccentric modernist layout.

Inside this fascinating museum you will find an immense collection of paintings from the Dutch Golden Age, sculptures, art displays, and contemporary art displays.

Particular examples include sculptures from Joost van den Toorn and paintings from Andy Warhol.

3. Martinikerk

Martinikerk

Standing proudly in the shadow of the ginormous Martinitoren tower is the Martinikerk church.

Named after Saint Martin of Tours, the church was constructed in the 1200’s but since then both the main building and the tower have seen many changes.

While the exterior of the church features a simple pale pink/red brick design with many arched windows, the interior is much more extravagant.

A beautiful feature of the interior is the old church organ that has some parts dating back to the 1400’s.

Furthermore, the roof of the main aisle features a delightful light blue decoration and several surrounding colourful frescos.

4. Noorderplantsoen

Noorderplantsoen

One of the finest public parks in Groningen, the Noorderplantsoen sits just to the north of the old town centre and contains approximately 1km of beautiful sculptured land.

Originally the site for some of the cities fortifications, after the walls were dismantled, the remaining land was turned into a public park.

Created in an English garden style, the park contains many tranquil ponds, winding paths, beautiful plant life and trees and an Art Nouveau Bandstand.

Enjoy the stunning landscapes; take a walk past the bodies of water or watch the world go by on one of the many benches.

5. The Northern Shipping Museum

The Northern Shipping Museum

Aside from the Groninger Museum, the Northern Shipping museum is one of the most visited in Groningen.

Maritime history is important in the city and Groningen has a rich shipping heritage.

Much of this history is on display in the Shipping museum in a great amount of detail.

Created in 1930, the museum has a huge amount of exhibitions relating to the maritime industry in the province of Groningen and features displays about ship building, marine engines, tidal navigation and ship trade.

For an interesting look at maritime history and to see some wonderfully presented exhibits, the Shipping museum is a first rate attraction.

6. Lauwersmeer National Park

Lauwersmeer National Park

Approximately 30km to the north of Groningen lays the Lauwersmeer National Park.

On the north coast the Lauwersmeer expands out into the Wadden Sea and is considered an area of natural beauty.

As an estuary, the Lauwersmeer contains many interesting flora and fauna, together with species of birds such as the Eurasian Spoonbill, the Bearded Reedling and the Tundra Swan.

This truly is a wildlife lovers paradise and the combination of stunning water landscapes and varieties of birds make it a great destination to explore.

Cycling is often perused here and there are many trails you can follow.

7. Prinsenhof Gardens

Prinsenhof Gardens

This wonderful renaissance garden is a truly magnificent creation and is considered the premier landscaped garden in Groningen.

Created in the 1600’s the garden used to belong to a monastery and is located in the centre of Groningen close to the Martinitoren and the Grote Markt.

Inside the walls of this magical place you will find a rose garden, an herb garden and other small enclosures – All of which have been maintained to a fabulous standard.

The Prinsenhof is also a location that poets come together in an annual event to read out their works to the public.

8. Village of Bourtange

Village of Bourtange

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a village that is shaped like a star and surrounded by a moat? Bourtange is exactly this – A purpose built star fort that was created during the Dutch revolts in the 1500’s.

Around an hour’s drive and 60km to the east of Groningen, this village provides an unusual and fascinating attraction in the countryside of the Netherlands.

With less than 300 inhabitants, Bourtange features a fantastic star shape design and is completely surrounded by a star shaped moat that is accessible by several bridges.

If you want a day trip from Groningen, Bourtange provides a truly unique and fascinating experience.

9. Grote Markt

Grote Markt

Market squares are a common feature in European cities and Groningen’s Grote Markt is a typical example.

Here the Markinitoren stands proud in one corner, the town hall at the far end, and a line of cute shops, restaurants and cafes surround this pleasant place.

Admire the wonderful architecture, see what deals are on in the shops, have a relaxing coffee or a first class meal or use this as a base to start exploring the old town centre.

10. Martinus Brewery

Martinus Brewery

Another of the Netherlands fine breweries, the Martinus brewery is a small and unassuming building but offers a great insight into the brewing process and also a fantastic place to enjoy a drink.

Aside from the interesting tour of the brewery, you can also enjoy a thirst quenching locally brewed drink next to the brewery boilers or relax on the roof terrace.

Martinus Brewery is the place to go with a group of friends to have a drink, learn a little bit of brewing history and also enjoy a tasting session and three course meal.

Quality beer, quality décor and a quality experience.

11. Battlefield Tours

Battlefield Tours

Groningen and indeed much of the Netherlands saw extensive fighting and battles during WW2 and as a result there has been left behind a multitude of battle sites, memorials and museums dedicated to the brave soldiers who fought in this catastrophic conflict.

In the Netherlands and Groningen there are many tour operators such as www.battlefieldtours.nu that provide historical WW2 packages aimed at showcasing the wonders of the country together with the history of this era.

Due to the cities involvement in the war and the importance it held, many of the tours include stops in Groningen and you will learn a great deal about its wartime activity and history.

12. Noorderlicht Photogallery

Noorderlicht Photogallery

Photo galleries are often brilliant places to see candid shots of historical or modern life from the perspective of a photographer.

Located right next to the historic Aa-Kerk and right in the centre of Groningen, the Noorderlicht Photogallery offers a fascinating insight into various significant cultural events.

For instance in November 2016, the gallery features 4 projects concentrating on the United States presidential elections by photographer Mark Peterson.

Temporary exhibitions are always changing so you never quite know what to expect from this intriguing place.

13. Groningen Synagogue

Groningen Synagogue

There are few working Synagogues left in the Netherlands and the Synagogue at Groningen is a fine example.

Tjeerd Kuipers designed this special building and its current form was constructed in 1906 to replace the previous iterations that spanned back to the 1700’s.

Many oriental and Moorish icononography adorn the interior of the Synagogue and the wooden ceiling is extremely  decorative.

Aside from the ceiling and religious icons, the archways and walls have a beautiful green and orange brick style pattern.

A huge stained glass window sits at one end of the Synagogue and features a plethora of colour and intricate patterns that lets the sun through splendidly.

14. Aa-Kerk

Aa-Kerk

Aa-Kerk or just A-Kerk is a church that dates back to the middle ages.

Dedicated to Saint Nicholas and constructed in the 1200’s, it is one of the oldest remaining churches in Groningen and its original design was replaced by its current brick form in the early 1400’s.

At night the church is lit up beautifully with a series of bright yellow lights and stands out against the surrounding buildings.

Inside this religious building you will find a swathe of white stonework and light pink brickwork that come together to create some striking patterns and archways.

Filled with religious icons and many windows, the church has a light, open and inviting air to it.

15. Nederlands Stripmuseum

Nederlands Stripmuseum

Comic strips are often funny, witty and interesting to look at – The Nederland’s Stripmuseum provides a wide array of comic strips displays from various eras and authors.

Located in the Schildersbuurt district of Groningen, the museum is close to the old town centre and the Groninger Museum.

Artworks from notable Dutch artists can be found including Aloys Oosterwijk, Hieronymus Bosch and Rik Buter.

12 Best Things To Do In Groningen (Suggested By Locals)

Photo of author

I have lived in Groningen for over a decade. Therefore, I have seen Groningen’s highlights and know which ones are worthy of your time and attention.

I have lived in Groningen for over a decade

I have also asked many friends who still live in Groningen about their favorite highlights to select the 12 best tourist attractions in Groningen for you.

What To Do In Groningen

I arranged these highlights in a tour around the city center of Groningen. In addition, I created an easy-to-use interactive map of Groningen to help you find Groningen’s highlights locations easily.

Map Of Things To Do In Groningen

What To Do In Groningen?

1. admire the beautiful train station.

The central train station in Groningen is beautiful from the outside but breathtaking from the inside. The present building was built at the end of the 19th century. The exterior of this building is a very tasteful combination of neo-gothic and neo-renaissance architectural elements.

However, the Groningen train station’s breathtaking interior makes this train station the most beautiful station in the country. The Groningen train station’s main hall, particularly its ceiling, makes this building unique .

Most people who enter this hall will stop and stare at the ceiling with the Groninger artist’s impressive tile pictures, F.H. Bach.

Even if you have not come to Groningen by train, do yourself a favor and walk inside this train station to look upside, and enjoy this stunning ceiling.

Admiring the beautifully decorated ceiling of the waiting room of the railway station in Groningen is one of the popular activities for tourist in Groningen

2. Explore The Groninger Museum

The Groninger Museum is unique because the building is already a work of art. In addition, the museum lies next to the train station, and the post-modern museum building starkly contrasts the train station’s classical architecture.

If you visit Groningen, you cannot avoid the Groninger Museum since most visitors will arrive by train. I strongly advise you to travel to all city centers by train to avoid high parking costs in the Netherlands’ city centers.

Walking from the train station towards the city center, you will cross the colorful museum bridge (a work of art in itself) and pass by the museum entrance, built in the middle of the canal surrounding the city.

This post-modern architecture and bridge provide a modern touch to Groningen, a city with many historic buildings. The museum is an excellent example that Groningen’s development and progression have not stopped.

The contemporary architecture of the Groninger Museum in Groningen, Netherlands, featuring its distinctive large yellow tower and surrounding waterways. This iconic building is a popular attraction for those looking for things to do in Groningen

3. Go Shopping In The Folkingestraat

You walk through the Folkingestraat, a trendy and charming shopping street from the Groninger Museum towards the city center. It is so lovely that it is considered the best shopping street in The Netherlands.

The Folkingestraat is a different type of shopping street, and perhaps the best example of what ‘different’ means is Ariola, a shop with Italian food. Ariola has been selected as the best shop in the Netherlands twice. In Ariola, you can buy lasagna, stuffed zucchini, and tapenade: Italian delicacies and everything homemade in their open kitchen.

The Folkingestraat in Groningen, a paradise for shoppers

4. Discover The Vismarkt And Korenbeurs

The Folkingestraat ends at the Vismarkt (Fish Market square), a typical Dutch market square surrounded by historical Dutch houses, now used as shops and restaurants.

Since the 15th century, the Vismarkt has been where fish was traded and sold to the public. Nowadays, you can go here for much more: on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, the market square is full of stalls with fish, meat, bread, vegetables, and fruit. Fill your bag with apples and cauliflower for a low price. Or store exotic herbs and forgotten vegetables.

On the west side of the Vismarkt, you will see a beautiful neoclassical building called the Korenbeurs. The Korenbeurs used to be an exchange for trading grain.

The market hall behind the facade consists of an enormous iron cast construction with lots of glass. All that glass provides much light, a prerequisite to accurately judging grain. Nowadays, a supermarket is located in the Korenbeurs, so you can still go inside and look around yourself.

The Vismarkt in Groningen

5. Explore The Northern Maritime Museum

Two historic fifteenth-century buildings on the Brugstraat, the Gothic House and the Canter House, are the Northern Maritime Museum’s fantastic locations.

The history of shipbuilding in the North of The Netherlands and shipping from the Middle Ages to the present day comes to life. Also, there are various annual exhibitions with themes from maritime history.

6. Make Great Pictures In Groningen

You will find the Hoge der A and Lage der A quays of Groningen’s old harbor around the maritime museum’s corner. The old warehouses along the quays reveal the bustle of the past. No less than 28 national and 11 municipal monuments are along these quays.

It feels like stepping into a painting. You can take the best photos in Groningen standing on one of two bridges: the Visserbrug or the A-brug . The Visserbrug is my personal favorite to make pictures in Groningen.

Groningen used to connect with the sea directly, but those days are long gone . Nowadays, several bars and cafes with charming terraces are located along these quays. When it rains, you can sit inside, admiring the view of the moored ships.

Hoge der A in Groningen offers the most photogenic shots of Groningen

7. Admire The University Groningen

Groningen is young. But where do you experience that youthful energy? Find a spot among the hundreds of bikes on the Academieplein and look around you.

This square on the Broerstraat between the Oude Boteringestraat and the Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat is the epicenter of the student city of Groningen.

On one side is the University Library, where hundreds of students spend the whole day studying. On the other hand, you can find the impressive neo-Renaissance style Academy Building.

In addition, you will find dozens of bars and restaurants around, making this area an active and enjoyable part of the city.

The entrance of the old University Building in the Broerestraat in Groningen

8. Visit The Almshouses

Hofjes is the Dutch word for almshouses, blocks of tiny houses with a shared courtyard in the middle. These almshouses were built to offer free housing for the poor, widows, and the sick.

Nowadays, everybody can live in these oases of peace in the city center. Walking into some of these almshouses, enjoying a peaceful moment of silence is possible.

Almshouses are not typical of Groningen. You will find them in many Dutch cities . However, what is unique in Groningen is that there are still many almshouses in the city center .

The houses around the yard ensure it is quieter in courtyards than outside. You can get a city walk map at the Tourist Information Office to see most of these almshouses in the center of Groningen.

9. Relax in The Garden Of Princes

Another quiet place in the city’s center, perhaps the most tranquil spot of the city center, is the Prinsentuin, the Princes’ Garden . This garden is located behind Prinsenhof, the residence of the Princes of Nassau when they were in Groningen (not very often).

Prince William Frederik of Nassau and his wife Albertine Agnes had the garden laid out in the 17th century. The rose garden, herb garden, and beautiful foliage corridors give a unique picture of how the princes and their families spent an afternoon in the sun.

10. Enjoy Forum, The New Cultural Center

Forum has become the new cultural center of Groningen, and opinions are sharply divided on whether it is a beautiful or ugly building. However, whatever your opinion about the outside of the Forum building is, everyone seems to agree that the outside makes one ‘curious’ about the inside.

Inside, you will find talk shows, lectures, debates, films, documentaries, courses, workshops, festivals, parties, exhibitions, cafés, restaurants, workspaces, meeting rooms, interactive installations, the city library, and the highest roof terrace in Groningen with phenomenal views.

So a visit to the Forum is worth it even if you only go for the roof terrace and its city views.

You may want to go to the Forum’s parking garage if you have time. Here, you will find the impressive work of art ‘Wervel,’ a 20-meter-long LED sculpture. Very different from what you have seen before and worth a few minutes of your time.

11. Relax on The Grote Markt

The Grote Markt is the market square in the center and the heart of Groningen. Two of the city’s most prominent buildings, the Martinitoren, and the city hall, are located at the Grote Markt and face each other from both sides of the cobbled square.

You can find plenty of terraces at the Grote Markt in the summertime, making it a lively and fun place to relax while contemplating what you may want to see or do next in Groningen.

In addition, there are markets organized on the Grote Markt on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

Grote Markt, the large market square in the center of the city

12. Climb The Martinitoren

Martinitoren in Groningen

For more than 500 years, the Martini Tower has risen high above Groningen city.

With its 97 meters, the Martinitoren is the highest tower in Groningen and the fourth tallest in the Netherlands.

It is possible to climb the Martini Tower, and you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Groningen city and its surroundings. It is the best view of Groningen and the surroundings that you can get.

However, if climbing stairs is not your thing, the Forum (see above) is a good alternative if you are looking for a helicopter view.

Other Interesting Dutch Cities To Visit

Besides Groningen, there are plenty of other quintessential Dutch cities that you could visit to experience a bustling, genuine, authentic Dutch town.

What is the best time to visit Groningen?

Groningen can be visited all year round. The best periods are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). The temperatures are pleasant in the spring and autumn periods. Summer (June-August) is also great to visit Groningen, but it can be warm with temperatures around 30ºC / 86°F. A disadvantage of the summer is that the prices are higher compared to other periods because of the school vacations in Europe. The quietest period is winter (December-February). Prices are lower and it is less crowded, the only drawback is that temperatures are less pleasant.

Want to see more of the Netherlands?

If you like Groningen, then Amsterdam is also a good city to visit. It has everything you could want: pretty canals, great museums, and delicious restaurants. You can get there from Groningen by train in 1.5 hours. It is important to know that you need 3 days to see Amsterdam. We wrote a 3 day Amsterdam itinerary to help you prepare for your trip to Amsterdam.

Groningen – A Beautiful University Town in North Netherlands

Groningen is a university town in Northern Netherlands that I visited this summer. Before I went, I knew very little about this city or what you could do there, but it looked nice in photos, and I had heard about it thanks to the Football team.

Here, you can read my best tips for the trip including tourist attractions, things to do in Groningen, How to get around, Flights to Groningen and of course hotel & accommodation + more information about the city itself.

It’s a lovely city with about 200 000 inhabitants, where circa 40 000 are students. That’s also why the average age is quite low here, but there are plenty of attractions and things to do for all ages.

Popular Attractions in Groningen

Groningen is an old city with lots of well-preserved architecture and beautiful buildings. Most of the attractions in Groningen are centrally located within walking- or biking distance.

A classic tourist attraction in Groningen that is nowadays a luxury hotel. Previously it has been the home of the Bishop, and later a military hospital in the 1800’s. It’s a historical building with a beautiful garden that is open to the public.

If you want to live a bit more luxurious in central Groningen, I can recommend booking a night at Prinsenhof .

Prinsenhof

At the beginning of the 20th century, there were about 2400 Jews living in the city. Only a small part of the Jewish community survived the Holocaust. But the synagogue survived, and today it’s still an active religious center for the Jewish community.

Martinitoren

This 97-meter tall tower is the pride of the city, and according to a local law, it’s forbidden to build anything higher than the Martinitoren. From here you get stunning views over the city. Next to the tower, you can also visit Martinikerk, which is the oldest church in Groningen.

A popular tourist attraction in Groningen

Reitdiephaven

This housing project is quite interesting as it’s built along the water in Scandinavian architecture. It’s a city marina where many locals have boats, and it’s definitely an interesting place to check out!

Der-Aa-Kerk

Another beautiful church in the central parts of Groningen that is worth visiting.

7 Things to do in Groningen

Stroll around the canals.

There are several canals around the city center where the houses are beautifully lined up along the water together with boats and houseboats. The Canals of Groningen are surely one of the best things to see and perfect for a stroll when the sun is shining.

When you feel for a break or people watching, just sit down at a cafe or bar with outdoor seating.

Beer tasting & brewery

There are many breweries in Groningen, and lots of different local beers to try. When I and Christine visited Groningen, we also had the chance to make our own beer at Baxbier Brewery. A different, but fun experience if you travel to Groningen with a group of friends.

Bax Bier has also won several prizes for their beer.

Go to the beach

Beaches are probably not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about the Netherlands, but Groningen actually has its own sandy beach in the central parts. It’s especially popular among the locals during the summer months.

The City beach is located behind “The Dot”.

Go shopping at Grote Markt

Grote Markt is the main square in town, and here you’ll find food trucks, bars, cafes and the food market that is held each Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.

It’s also a nice place for people watching while sipping some drinks at one of the popular bars.

A night out at Mr. Mofongo

In central Groningen, next to the University Museum, you’ll find a funky and unique bar and restaurant that is called Mr Mofongo. It’s not a regular bar, this place is combined from several parts of an old residential house. In just one place, you can enjoy a cafe, restaurant, wine bar, cocktail bar, and a distillery.

They make their own liquor, and something even more unique – The Robot arm that makes cocktails! Or, the robot that opens wine bottles and pours glasses of wine in the wine bar on the third floor. Mr. Mofongo has it all for a fun night out with friends or just a nice dinner.

Watch Dutch football

You might know about Ajax and PSV Eindhoven from the top league in the Netherlands. Groningen is the home city for the club – FC Groningen, so if you like football and your visit coincidence with a clash with Ajax or PSV, you should definitely go and watch some European top football

Attend Paradigm Festival

If you travel here during summer when Paradigm Festival is being held, you should definitely make a visit. It’s a music festival that reminds a bit of Tomorrowland but on a smaller scale.

It’s one of the highlights for the locals! And visitors from all over the world come here to experience the festival.

How to get around in Groningen

I recommend renting a bicycle to get around. It’s very convenient just as in the rest of the Netherlands, and it’s also the most common ways for locals to get around. There are lots of parking spaces for bicycles and it’s very safe for cyclists.

If you stay in the city center, you can walk to most attractions and places of interest.

There are buses who can take you around the city to different areas. It’s cheaper than a taxi and could be a good alternative if you want to explore beyond the city center, but don’t want to rent a bike.

how to get around groningen

Flights to Groningen

As of now, there are direct flights to Groningen from Copenhagen and London. But you can also get here quite easily by train from Schiphol in Amsterdam, which means that you can fly here from literally any destination around the world.

It’s the Nordica Air that flies between Groningen and Copenhagen.

Accommodation & Hotel

The student hotel.

If you’re traveling on a budget and want a nice place to stay, I can suggest The Student Hotel. I stayed here, and it’s not only good for students, but for all ages and visitors.

The staff is friendly and you can rent a bike here. The rooms are simple but have everything needed for a great weekend in Groningen.

Groningen is the seventh largest city in the Netherlands with a well-known university, founded already in the 1600’s. There are around 200 000 people living here in total, whereas at least 40 000 of them are students. Of these students, about 11% are from foreign countries.

The city is known for being innovative and having a great startup-scene. There’s a lot going on in Groningen, and the city is continuously working on improving it via various projects, especially when it comes to being sustainable and innovative.

Despite being a quite small city, both in size and total population, you’ll find everything needed here, both as a tourist and local.

The history of Groningen

Historically, the city has been important, and it’s currently unknown when it was first founded. However, the first document mentioning the city is dated to 1040.

But there are archeological findings dating back thousands of years. The oldest ones are dating back to 3950 – 3720 B.C. The oldest habitation is from the 4th century.

In the 13th century, Groningen became an important trade center, and it was also then when the first city wall was being built to protect from intruders.

The greatest period was in the 15th century when Friesland was ruled from here as well. Martinitoren was built during this period.

Important dates throughout history

  • Year 1536, Karl V was accepted as the leader, just as in the rest of the Netherlands
  • 1594, the city was conquered by Maurice of Nassau
  • Shortly after, the province joined the Republic of the Seven United Provinces
  • The University was founded 1614
  • During the same period, a new city wall was being built
  • 1672 was heavily attacked by the Bishop of Münster, but the city prevailed thanks to the city wall
  • April 1945, large parts of Grote Markt was destroyed in the Battle of Groningen.

Climate and Weather in Groningen

The weather is pretty similar to the rest of the Netherlands, but during the winter months, it can be a bit colder here due to winds. Dress as you would if you travel to Amsterdam, and bring an umbrella if you have because you never know in the Netherlands!

Below you can see the average temperature for Groningen.

Day trips from Groningen

Northern Netherlands is beautiful but easily fall into the shadow in favor of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Haag, which is visited by millions of tourists each year.

However, if you spend a few days in the city, you could also make some day trips from Groningen to these places.

Giethoorn is a typical Dutch village. And if you come to Northern Netherlands during summer, you should check out Ameland Island and Scheveningen Beach for sunbathing.

You seem to have missed VERA, since the mid Seventies one of the main underground rock clubs of the Netherlands. Despite the relatively small room (I think their main stage has space for about 500 attendees), over the years, VERA hosted bands like U2, Simple Minds, Joy Division, Nick Cave, Sonic Youth, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Franz Ferdinand, Elbow and a myriad of other big names. Every week the club has about two concert nights at the main stage, but VERA also has a small bar with live music in the cellar of the building and has a weekly cinema night. You'll find VERA in Oosterstraat 44, a few hundred meters from Grote Markt. www.vera-groningen.nl

16 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in the Netherlands

Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated May 11, 2023

The Netherlands is known everywhere as a land of windmills, canals, and tulips, and today's visitors certainly will find these among its many tourist attractions.

Tulips and windmill at Keukenhof, Lisse, The Netherlands

But along with the country's many breathtaking gardens and picturesque villages, those sightseeing here will also find the vibrant cities, like Amsterdam, filled with museums showcasing a rich heritage of artists (think Rembrandt and Van Gogh). Other places to visit include numerous medieval castles and cityscapes, along with a 13,800-acre national park, and a tide control system that's been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World .

Given the relatively small size of The Netherlands, all these attractions and fun things to do are within a relatively compact area, and the landscape is quite flat (the highest elevation is barely a thousand feet above sea level).

Consequently, it's extremely easy to do at least a little of your sightseeing the Dutch way: by bicycle. Many of the top travel destinations and major cities in the Netherlands actively encourage the use of pedal-power and provide free bikes to explore the sights. However you choose to see the Netherlands, you're guaranteed a great time in one of the friendliest and most liberal cultures in Europe.

Be sure to plan your travel itinerary with our list of the top tourist attractions in The Netherlands.

1. Jordaan and Amsterdam's Canals

2. keukenhof, lisse, 3. rijksmuseum, amsterdam, 4. historic binnenhof, the hague, 5. anne frank house, amsterdam, 6. oude haven, rotterdam, 7. van gogh museum, amsterdam, 8. the windmills of kinderdijk, 9. de hoge veluwe national park, otterlo, 10. cathedral square, utrecht, 11. the ijsselmeer (zuiderzee), enkhuizen, 12. delta works: zeeland's spectacular dikes, 13. historic valkenburg, 14. royal delft, delft, 15. de haar castle, 16. the netherlands open air museum, best time to visit the netherlands.

Canal in Amsterdam

Highlight : Explore Amsterdam's canals and historic neighborhoods by boat and on foot

Canals are as important a part of Amsterdam's cityscape as they are to the city of Venice, and some of the most enduring memories for any visitor are the time spent exploring the city's wonderful waterways.

While many of Amsterdam's best tourist attractions can easily be accessed by boat tour or water taxi — including most of the major museums and art galleries — nothing beats strolling along the smaller, quieter streets that line the waterways.

Particularly charming is the Jordaan, a neighborhood built in the early 1600s to house workers and immigrants drawn here for the city's religious tolerance. Along with its small canal-side houses, look for the neighborhood's many "hofjes," the quaint inner courtyards hidden behind the buildings.

Jordaan and Amsterdam's Canals

Another photo-worthy neighborhood is the Grachtengordel , with its many small bridges and quaint 17th-century homes. You'll be rewarded as you explore these 400-year-old streets with examples of beautiful architecture, small boutique shops, cafés, and gardens. Be sure to look out for the many houseboats moored along the canals.

Just a 10-minute stroll away is Dam Square, a must-visit when in Amsterdam. In addition to its numerous restaurants, cafés, and shops this vast public square is home to some of the city's most-visited tourist attractions. These include the spectacular Royal Palace (Koninklijk Palace); the attractive New Church (Nieuwe Kerk); and the country's most important war memorial, the National Memorial Statue .

Keukenhof

Highlight : Europe's largest collection of tulips with miles of walking trails and hot houses

Think of the Netherlands, and you'll inevitably think of tulips, the country's most popular flower. And one of the most beautiful places to visit in the Netherlands showcases these and other spring bulbs in spectacular abundance. Given its handy location relative to Amsterdam — it's a 45-minute drive away, or just under an hour by public transit — it makes for a fun and easy day trip from the country's largest city.

Keukenhof, otherwise known as the "Garden of Europe," is located on the outskirts of the town of Lisse in what's widely considered the "bulb belt" of the Netherlands. The largest public garden in the world, it boasts more than 70 acres of what was once the former kitchen (or "keuken") garden of a large country estate, Keukenhof displays more than 700 varieties of tulips, which are at their height in April and May.

But thanks to its massive commercial hot houses, the display continues almost year-round. In these, you'll see endless rows of flowering tulips, along with thousands of hyacinths, crocuses, and daffodils.

Address: Stationsweg 166A, 2161 AM Lisse, Netherlands

Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

Highlight : A vast collection of famous artworks by artists including Rembrandt and Van Gogh

The spectacular Rijksmuseum , aka the National Museum, in Amsterdam's Museumplein (Museum Square) has been collecting rare art and antiquities since 1809. Not surprisingly, its extensive collection today amounts to nearly seven million works of art, including 5,000 paintings in more than 250 rooms, as well as a vast library with some 35,000 books.

Apart from its unique collection of old masters, this spectacular museum offers an exhaustive account of the development of art and culture in The Netherlands and is especially rich in traditional Dutch handicrafts, medieval sculpture, and modern art. Be prepared to spend the best part of a day — or longer — exploring this museum's endless treasures.

If you've time to squeeze a little more Rembrandt into your Amsterdam travel itinerary, here's a must-visit for you: the Rembrandt House Museum , located in the city's historic Jewish Quarter. Many of his best-known works were painted during the 20 years the great artist spent here, with some still recognizable scenes from the neighborhood.

The house remains much as it would have been during Rembrandt's life (guided tours are available). You can enhance your experience by booking a stay close by at Luxury Suites Amsterdam , located just steps away from the museum and one of the best places to stay in Amsterdam for those who enjoy luxury accommodations.

Address: Museumstraat 1, 1071 XX Amsterdam, Netherlands

Binnenhof, The Hague

Highlights : Historic capital of the Netherlands with well-preserved architecture and parliament

Known the world over as the location of the International Court of Justice, The Hague (Den Haag) is also the political center of The Netherlands. It's here the country's government does their work, and where you'll find the home of the Dutch Royal Family in Noordeinde Palace.

The Hague also makes for an excellent travel destination for visitors wanting to get a taste of the country's rich history. Whether you're staying here for a few days or visiting as a day trip from Amsterdam , start your exploration in the city's historic Binnenhof district. Literally translated as the "Inner Court," the Binnenhof dates back as far as 1250 CE. It's the oldest part of the city and a delight to explore on foot.

Set around a central courtyard, the attractive older buildings here once housed the country's ruling classes and have been remarkably well-preserved. The crown jewel here is the Knights' Hall (Ridderzaal). Built in the 13th century, this imposing castle-like building with its twin towers is still in use for government events, including the opening of parliament every September. Highlights include the Gothic hall with its stained-glass windows and wood-beamed ceiling.

Address: 2513 AA Den Haag, Netherlands

Anne Frank House, Amsterdam

Highlight : Hiding place of Anne Frank where she wrote her famous diary during WWII

The Anne Frank House is a must-see when in Amsterdam. On Prinsengracht , in the home where Anne's family hid for much of WWII (they were Jewish refugees from Frankfurt), is where this remarkable girl wrote her famous diary. Although she died just two months before the war ended, her legacy lives on through her words, which have since been translated into 51 languages.

The back of the fully-restored house where the Frank family had their hiding place has been kept in its original state as much as possible and is a poignant monument to a tragic slice of world history and a brave young woman who continues to inspire people around the globe.

A word of caution: tickets for this must-see attraction do sell out, so be sure to reserve yours online well ahead of time. And if you're visiting in warmer weather — spring and summer are widely considered some of the best times to visit Amsterdam — be sure to allow time to explore the surrounding area with its charming old canals on foot.

Address: Prinsengracht 263-267, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Oude Haven, Rotterdam

Highlights : Europe's largest port with a historic harbor area, vessels, and museums

Located an easy one-hour train ride from Amsterdam, the port city of Rotterdam is well worth visiting for its well-preserved Old Harbour, or Oude Haven. The city has a long and rich maritime history thanks largely to its location on the Nieuwe Maas, an arm of the Rhine River, and its proximity to the English Channel.

Part of Rotterdam's superb Maritime District, Oude Haven is ideal for those who enjoy seeing the sights on foot. The harbor is chock-full of old houseboats and sailing ships, many of them on display at the Maritime Museum Rotterdam .

In addition to the 20 or so historic vessels on display in the water, a variety of indoor displays can also be enjoyed, including a replica of a vessel dating back over 2,000 years.

Address: Leuvehaven 1, 3011 EA Rotterdam, Netherlands

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam

Highlights : One of the world's top art museums focusing on the work of Vincent Van Gogh

As befits one of the world's greatest artists, the spectacular Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is ranked an impressive #2 in a leading list of the top art museums globally, attracting almost 1.5 million visitors each year.

Home to the world's largest collection of Van Gogh paintings — many donated by the artist's family — this impressive gallery and museum was specially built to showcase the more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters in its vast collection.

Works by his contemporaries are also on display. A highlight is participating in the museum's new "Meet Vincent Van Gogh Experience," which offers a fascinating, high-tech, interactive look at the artist's life and times, as well as his best-known work.

If the city's excellent museums are your priority, you may in fact want to consider visiting them off-season during the quieter, cooler times of year. Given that both these popular attractions are things to do indoors and easy to get to via the city's excellent public transit, it's easy to keep warm, and the city's climate is relatively mild, even in winter.

Address: Museumplein 6, Amsterdam, Netherlands

The Windmills of Kinderdijk

Highlight : The largest collection of preserved historic windmills in the Netherlands

On the River Noord between Rotterdam and Dordrecht is the famous village of Kinderdijk ("Children's Dike"), which takes its name from an incident during the St. Elizabeth's Day flood of 1421 after a child's cradle had been stranded on the dike.

The big draw these days are the fantastically preserved 18th-century windmills. Now UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the 19 Kinderdijk windmills, built between 1722 and 1761, are the largest surviving concentration of windmills in the Netherlands.

Originally used to drain the fenlands, these majestic buildings with their impressive 92-foot sails are open to the public from April to October, including special Mill Days when the sails are set in motion. These picturesque windmills make for a fun excursion for those based in Rotterdam during their Netherlands stay.

De Hoge Veluwe National Park

Highlights : Vast national park with hiking, biking, wildlife, horseback riding, and camping

You may be surprised to learn that the Netherlands, a relatively small country, boasts one of the world's most diverse national park programs. The largest is De Hoge Veluwe National Park (Nationaal Park De Hoge Veluwe), between Arnhem and Apeldoorn, rightly considered one of the best places to visit in the Netherlands for outdoor enthusiasts .

Covering nearly 13,800 acres, this national park is the largest continuous nature reserve in the country, as well as being one of the most popular day trip destinations for locals and visitors alike. Featuring dense woodlands in the north, as well as a fascinating sculpture park, the area was once a country estate and hunting reserve, and to this day is home to many red and roe deer.

The best-preserved part of the park encompasses an area of dramatic dunes interspersed with heath and woodland and interrupted in the south and east by moraines up to 100 meters high. It's also a popular area for bird-watching, as well as hiking and biking (use of bikes is free to visitors).

The highlight of this beautiful park for many — and the reason many people choose to come here — is the outstanding Kröller-Müller Museum (Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller), housing the world's second-largest collection of works by Van Gogh. In addition, the collections include Impressionist and Expressionist paintings by Cézanne, Manet, Monet, and Renoir. Outdoors, one of Europe's largest sculpture gardens shows works by Rodin, Hepworth, Dubuffet, and others.

Address: Houtkampweg 6, Otterlo, Netherlands

St. Martin's Cathedral, or Dom Church in Utrecht

Highlights : Pedestrian-friendly old city center, cathedral tower with views, and museums

A popular tourist destination for its many fine historic buildings, the Dutch city of Utrecht should definitely be included on your Netherlands travel itinerary.

Start your exploration of this pedestrian-friendly city in Cathedral Square. The Domplein, as it's known locally, is the site of St. Martin's Cathedral, or Dom Church (Domkerk). Although founded in 1254, much of what you see dates from the 14th and 15th centuries.

You'll also want to visit the Domtoren , a surviving stand-alone church tower built in the 1300s that rises high above the surrounding buildings. Be sure to make the climb up to the viewing platforms for its superb views over Utrecht. Although there are 465 steps to climb, the guided tour that comes with the climb is an excellent introduction to the city's rich history.

Address: Achter de Dom 1, 3512 JN Utrecht, Netherlands

The Ijsselmeer (Zuiderzee)

Highlights : Beautiful lake region with historic waterways, quaint villages, and cultural attractions

Among the most beautiful villages in the Netherlands are the small hamlets along the Ijsselmeer (Lake Ijssel), the freshwater lake that resulted from the closing of the sea entrance to the Zuider Zee. These towns flourished during Amsterdam's Golden Age, when they had access to the Atlantic and prospered as fishing and trade centers, but lost importance as the harbors silted up.

Today, they're among the most photographed tourist attractions in the country. Time seems to have stood still for the fishing village of Marken and the seaports of Volendam and Enkhuizen , where many of the colorful houses have become museums and shops.

Enkhuizen has preserved many of its buildings and seafaring industries in the open-air Zuiderzee Museum , where the cultural heritage and maritime history of the old Zuiderzee region is preserved. Here, you can see craftsmen at work learning old maritime skills. In Volendam's harbor, you can see a collection of colorful old wooden boats.

Address: Wierdijk 12 - 22, Enkhuizen, Netherlands

Delta Works

Highlights : Modern dike system with dams, canals, and visitor center

Incorporating the deltas of the Rhine, the Maas, and the Schelde Rivers, Zeeland includes the numerous islands and peninsulas of the southwestern section of the Netherlands. Much of this area of recently formed land is below sea level and therefore reliant upon impressive dikes, as well as modern flood prevention techniques.

As you travel the area, you'll see evidence of the mega-engineering project known as the Delta Works . These massive structures — basically hi-tech dams — can control how much water enters the area's key estuaries from the North Sea.

Consisting of dams, sluices, locks, dikes, and storm-surge barriers, this awe-inspiring US$7 billion project has been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

Historic Valkenburg

Highlights : Medieval village with preserved buildings, castle ruins, and large spa complex

For those looking for a little ancient history, the Netherlands is not without its own medieval (and earlier) attractions. Romantic little Valkenburg, in the picturesque Geul Valley, boasts the country's only hilltop castle,. Long a popular holiday resort, the town's other big draws are its many caves and the spa facilities at Thermae 2000 , one of the largest such establishments in the Netherlands.

In addition to the ruins of the 12th-century castle on Dwingelrots (Castle Rock), there's also the interesting 14th-century St. Nicolaaskerk Basilica . Another highlight is the town's famous Christmas Market (mid-November to December 23rd) held in the Velvet Caves, the maze of old passageways leading to and from the castle.

Royal Delft porcelain vases for sale in Delft, The Netherlands

Highlight : Home of the famous Royal Delft pottery with factory tours and shopping

Located between the cities of The Hague and Rotterdam (and therefore easy to get to), Delft is known the world over for its famous blue and white porcelain products. Delftware, as it's usually known, has adorned shelves and dining rooms the world over since the 1600s, and remains as popular today as it was back then.

Known in English as Royal Delft , the original manufacturer, Koninklijke Porceleyne Fles N.V., has been around since 1653 and offers a variety of fun experiences for visitors.

In addition to informative tours of the factory, including a chance to see talented artisans hand painting pottery, you can visit the factory's vast collection of Delftware, and even finish up with a posh afternoon tea experience in the on-site tea room.

Address: Rotterdamseweg 196, 2628 AR Delft, Netherlands

De Haar Castle

Highlights : Fairytale castle with huge grounds, hiking trails, and guided tours

Near the lovely old city of Utrecht, the fourth largest in the Netherlands, De Haar Castle (Kasteel De Haar) is the largest fortification in the country.

This spectacular castle, built by the famous Dutch architect PJH Cuypers, required so much land (it sits on a spectacular 250-acre park) that the entire village of Haarzuilens had to be relocated to accommodate it. While the original castle site was established in the 14th century, this newer structure dates from 1892 and is well worth taking the time to explore.

Inside, you'll be rewarded with impressive collections of antiques, furniture, paintings, and tapestries, but it's the gardens that really draw the crowds — along with the castle's fairy-tale looks.

Netherlands Open Air Museum

Highlights : Living history museum with costumed interpreters, cultural events, and interactive workshops

The city of Arnhem is well worth including on your Netherlands travel itinerary. Famous for its location on a branch of the Rhine River and the battles that ensued here during WWII, it's here you'll find the Netherlands Open Air Museum (Nederlands Openluchtmuseum).

This family-friendly attraction has provided visitors with a fascinating look at traditional Dutch lifestyles for well over 100 years, with costumed guides offering unique insights into cultural, farming, and manufacturing aspects of life up to the mechanization of the 1900s.

Authentic period homes, workshops, and businesses offer hands-on opportunities to learn about and appreciate once-common practices, from fishing to baking and even clog making. Other highlights include a still-operating vintage tram, cultural events and concerts, and fun kids' programs.

Address: Hoeferlaan 4, 6816 SG Arnhem, Netherlands

Classic spring scene in the Netherlands

As one of the most visited countries in Europe, the Netherlands can get pretty busy during the peak summer months, especially in July when the schools break up.

The spring shoulder months of April and May are a great time to visit Amsterdam and the rest of the Netherlands, with many of the country's best parks and gardens bursting into life with an abundance of greenery and flowers (tulips are everywhere in the Netherlands!).
