Work permits and visas in Saudi Arabia: an employer’s guide

Sally Flaxman

Saudi Arabia  is undergoing massive employment and digitization. It's phasing out of a sponsorship system and improving the overall employment ecosystem with modifications to the Labor Code  and an ambitious Vision 2030 .

The combination of rapid digitization and improved work conditions in Saudi Arabia prompts employers to consider how they can manage work visas  in Saudi Arabia and follow documentation rules. You'll need to know how to legally hire employees without an owned entity, manage work visa requirements, and manage employees or contractors compliantly in the country.

Employers should ensure all hiring and payment processes strictly adhere to employment and tax laws. Failing to do so is harshly penalized and may result in hefty financial fines on employers, deportation of workers, and civil or criminal offenses in cases of repeat or serious violations.

The importance of immigration compliance in Saudi Arabia

Which workers need a right-to-work check in saudi arabia, do noncitizens need a work visa or work permit in saudi arabia, what are the eligibility requirements for a work visa in saudi arabia, what are the long-stay visa types in saudi arabia, how do you get a work visa for saudi arabia, what is the process for employee work visa sponsorship in saudi arabia, what are the visa requirements for digital nomads in saudi arabia, how remote makes compliance in saudi arabia so much easier.

This industry-defining guide will keep you abreast of work visa requirements and permits in Saudi Arabia and how to hire remote employees compliantly from start to finish.

If you're hiring noncitizens in Saudi Arabia under any work arrangement, including remote work, you must ensure they are employed according to local labor laws and regulations.

The Cancellation of Fines and Exemption of Penalties Initiative  gives employees and workers only up to six months, as of June 1, 2022, to fill out the required forms and adjust their situation. Otherwise, employers may face a series of financial penalties and possible civil actions due to:

Noncompliance with VAT invoice issuance, the inclusion of all VAT elements, and accounting invoice maintenance

Noncompliance with VAT e-invoicing provisions

The growing adoption, even popularity, of remote work and digital nomad visas or programs may lead some employers and workers to pay insufficient attention to adequate — and legal — ways to work in Saudi Arabia. For example, Saudi Arabia already has several visa types  for different purposes, including tourism. So bypassing established rules for each visa type, such as working on a tourist visa, is a ticket to regulatory fines, possible deportation, and more.

For years, Saudi Arabia has been improving the criteria needed to strike a balance between employer and work rights. For example, to help improve right-to-work checks, enhance work conditions locally, and transfer skills to Saudi nationals, Saudi Arabia has in place a nationwide Saudization program .

The employment process based on nationality is regulated as follows:

Permanent residents.  Like citizens, permanent residents are free to work anywhere in Saudi Arabia without restrictions.

Temporary residents.  Unless meeting the requirements above, all temporary residents — including individuals holding tourist, business visit, or residence visas — must follow prescribed procedures and rules for foreigners who wish to work in Saudi Arabia. To be eligible, workers need to apply via an employer, who must contact the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development .

Work permit holders.  This class of noncitizens already fulfills all requirements to work and stay in Saudi Arabia.

Managing work visas and permits for noncitizens in Saudi Arabia can get complex for employers who may not have enough resources and/or legal expertise.

Here is where a global employment service  such as Remote can add value so you as an employer can focus on what matters most for your business: market expansion, growth, and ultimately brand recognition and respect.

Yes. As a general rule, all noncitizens need a work visa (and residence permit) to work and stay in Saudi Arabia. Requirements vary depending on each applicant's nationality, residence status, education and skills, and more factors. That said, an Employment visa (which entails getting a residence permit) is generally all that any noncitizen needs to work in Saudi Arabia.

All foreigners are required to follow provisions and rules specified in Articles 48-50  of the Saudi Labor Code, including:

Securing a work permit as per form and procedures prescribed by the Saudi Minister of Labor

Obtaining the Saudi Minister of Labor's approval

Entering Saudi Arabia legally and satisfying all relevant residency conditions

Having skills or qualifications needed in Saudi Arabia and shown to be lacking among Saudi nationals

Having an employer contract, under a Saudi or non-Saudi employer, or being independently employed

Worker requirements may vary on a case-by-case basis.

Saudi Arabia is opening up, and more residency visas continue to be introduced, including long-stay visas such as:

Residence visa : No residence periods are specified

Premium residency visa : Granted to high-value residents who can stay and work in Saudi Arabia without work permits or sponsors

Family visit visa : Intended for family reunion purposes (no residence periods are specified)

The documentation requirements, application place, and average processing time of an Employment visa  for U.S. citizens* are as follows.

Documentation requirements

Original valid passport

Completed online application form

A visa referral note

An original employer sponsorship letter

Employment contract

Certified and notarized copy of the applicant's university degree or diploma

Certified and notarized copy of training or technical diploma

Medical report

Criminal record report

Application place

The application process can be done only through one of the following:

The embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Washington

The embassy's authorized list of visa offices

Handling these processes can be expensive and time-consuming.

If you are planning to handle these processes yourself, it could be expensive, and time-consuming and lead to legal challenges or penalties if you're unaware of applicable laws, regulations, or rules. To hire employees abroad, your company can benefit greatly from working with an established employer of record (EOR). Learn more about how an employer of record works and when you should use one .

In a major regulatory development , Saudi Arabia abolished the Kafala system in 2021 and made it possible for workers to negotiate employment contracts and choose to leave a given employer or Saudi Arabia without prior approval from an employer (sponsor).

This new arrangement enables employers to sponsor noncitizens directly after signing an employment contract and obtaining necessary permissions from the Saudi Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development and the Ministry of Interior.

Saudi Arabia does not yet have any laws or official regulations governing how, where, or when digital nomads can work in Saudi Arabia.

Since remote work isn't officially recognized for noncitizens, employers cannot simply hire noncitizens to work remotely under any form of employment agreement. They can only do so via an employment visa arrangement (as for U.S. citizens) or as indicated and approved by local authorities.

Employers must be careful when hiring noncitizens to work remotely as digital nomads in Saudi Arabia. Recent labor reforms and the abolishing of the Kafala system are by no means permission to hire noncitizens remotely.

Instead, uninitiated employers are strongly advised to seek expert legal advice to help manage remote workers, independent contractors, and digital nomads in Saudi Arabia. Reach out to Remote to manage your digital workforce and focus on what matters most to you: business growth.

The requirements for work visas and permits can get complicated for employers who want to operate legally in Saudi Arabia and hire employees and contractors.

To complicate matters, relocating to Saudi Arabia may prove challenging to noncitizens whose cultures, professional backgrounds, or personal preferences may differ from the majority of the population. If you work with an employer of record( EOR ), it becomes much easier and quicker to hire employees abroad. Remote’s team of employment experts handles everything from onboarding, benefits, payroll, and taxes to compliance with local immigration and labor laws.

New Temporary Work Visa Is Available in Saudi Arabia

visit work visa saudi arabia

[This article has been corrected.]

Development in Saudi Arabia continues to accelerate with projects like the  NEOM  business development region and the strategic framework  Vision 2030 , and there is an increasing need for skilled short-term workers in the kingdom. Recognizing this need, Saudi Arabia has launched a new Temporary Work Visa designed to streamline and expedite the process of bringing short-term workers into the country, while also broadening which types of workers are eligible for the visa.

This is a change from the previously available visa, the Work Visit Visa. "The previous one used to be restricted, usually, to technical work, and certain designations, like engineering … were used a lot in the oil industry in the eastern province for people who worked on and off rotation. But this new one is basically available pretty much to all," said Sara Khoja, an attorney with Clyde & Co in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. "It's still designed for short-term professional projects in the kingdom, to resource those kinds of temporary projects, but it is available to a much wider range of individuals than the previous ones."

"Older working visas have been largely restricted to male workers or older female workers, usually above 40," said Heinrich Köllisch, legal consultant at Schlüter Graf in Dubai. "The invitation procedures are much easier right now."

The Vision 2030 framework has encouraged many new projects throughout the country, accelerating a trend that makes it important to bring more workers in.

"There's just a whole array of visas that have become available in the last two years," Khoja said. "The level of resourcing that projects like NEOM need, it's really high. So having these kinds of temporary visas helps."

"Saudi Arabia is undergoing many overall developments in light of their Vision 2030, so facilitating doing business and enabling the private sector to run and conduct and manage its business in the most efficient and facilitated ways is one of the main objectives," said Sara Aalamri, an attorney with AlGhazzawi & Partners in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. "The labor law in Saudi Arabia also accommodates temporary work employment contracts, so this would seem suitable and to fit."

Beyond Vision 2030, this new visa is part of a larger push to make Saudi Arabia available to foreign workers. "It goes hand in hand with other measures of opening up the country, of the transformation of the economy from a more closed-off oil-based economy toward an economic powerhouse in the region, where Saudi Arabia should be an attractive place for foreign direct investments," Köllisch said.

How Does It Work?

Compared with the previous visa, the Temporary Work Visa is much easier for foreign workers to acquire. "You need someone in Saudi Arabia who actually invites you; they will be sponsoring the visa," Köllisch said. "So that entity should have a commercial register within Saudi Arabia, that must be a Saudi commercial or Saudi entity, either a single merchant in Saudi Arabia, a branch of a company or an independent company itself; it should be distinct."

"It's not something that an individual could apply for or obtain by themselves," Khoja said. "It has to [come from] a Saudi company, well-established, registered with all the relevant authorities, registered with the Ministry of HR. And it would apply through an electronic platform for this business of bringing an individual in on a temporary basis."

The temporary professional visa is valid for three months upon entry into Saudi Arabia and must be used within one year of being issued. Permanent professional visas last, by contrast, two years. The temporary professional visa can be extended while the worker is in Saudi Arabia, to last for a subsequent three months. There is no requirement to leave the country in order to renew the visa. The official  QIWA website , which provides services and solutions to the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development, supplies updated information on the visas.

What Are the Benefits?

The ease of acquiring the temporary visa is one of its many benefits to both workers and companies. "The ability to bring people in quickly and with flexible resourcing [is beneficial], because with some of the projects, you don't want to necessarily have people on the ground all the time, especially as some of the projects are in remote areas," Khoja said.

"It basically enables many more people to work in Saudi Arabia on projects more easily. Entities in Saudi Arabia can support their labor force inside with specialists as needed on a much swifter approach than before, so less administration, more flexible, more speeded up processes on projects inside Saudi Arabia," Köllisch said.

The temporary visa gives workers an opportunity to test the waters of working in the country before they commit to a more long-term contract. The speed and flexibility are the main benefits for everyone involved, from Saudi Arabia itself to the employees acquiring the visa.

It's likely that more specialized work visas will come in the future. "It's the beginning of a trend," Khoja said.

Saudi Arabia Visas
& Permits.

Country capital, saudi riyal (sr) (sar).

If your company is planning to grow in Saudi Arabia, you’ll need a talented team of employees. It is important to know how to get work visas and residency permits for any employees who will be making the move with you, whether you’re planning to relocate existing team members or recruit new employees internationally.

Types of work visas in Saudi Arabia

Anyone who wishes to enter Saudi Arabia will require a visa, with the exception of citizens of countries that are members of The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf. These members are the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, the Sultanate of Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait.

There are several types of visas  available in Saudi Arabia, among them the most common include:

  • Employment visas: For expats with an employment contract.
  • Business visit visas: For expats who want to visit the country for business and have an invitation letter from a Saudi company.
  • Family visit or residence visas: For expats that can prove a kinship with a local resident.
  • Temporary work visit visa (TWVV): Introduced in 2021, this multiple-entry visa is valid for 1 year. Employers are allowed to buy a quota and sponsor an expat. These visas can also be used for short-term work for the visa-sponsoring entity for up to 90 days.

This guide will focus on employment visas, as these are necessary for any employees staying in Saudi Arabia long term.

Requirements to obtain Saudi Arabia work visas

To obtain a visa, employees must have a sponsor in Saudi Arabia. The sponsoring employer is responsible for most of the application process, but the prospective employee will need to supply all the necessary documents.

In 2021, Saudi Arabia introduced the Professional Verification Scheme, which requires that foreign nationals working in 23 technical fields must pass an exam to prove their qualifications before receiving a visa. Currently, this applies to Indian, Pakistani, and Bangladeshi nationals. In March 2023, Saudi Arabia announced that the program will expand to include Sri Lankan nationals. This program is likely to continue expanding to other nationalities in the future.

Employers in Saudi Arabia will need to pay for the expenses related to this program for each applicant.

The following are just some of the documents required to obtain an employment visa:

  • A passport that will be valid for the duration of employment, with at least 2 empty visa pages
  • A passport-sized photograph, in color
  • Proof of online payment of the visa fee through the Enjazit website
  • A completed visa application
  • 3 copies of a signed medical report
  • A letter of employment from the sponsoring company in Saudi Arabia and a signed employment contract, which must be certified by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Saudi Chamber of Commerce
  • A certified copy of the applicant’s university diploma, which must be validated by the Saudi Arabian Cultural Mission
  • A police report of any criminal record

Application process

The employer must begin the work visa application process. Here are the necessary steps to obtain a visa and residency permit in Saudi Arabia:

  • The sponsoring employer must register with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Interior.
  • The Ministry will open an immigration file with information regarding all of the employer’s expatriate employees.
  • The employer will lodge an application for a work visa with the Ministry of Labor.
  • Once the application is approved, the Ministry of Labor will notify the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Within 2 weeks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will issue a Visa Authorization Number.
  • The employee will submit their employment visa application to the relevant embassy of Saudi Arabia, along with the documents listed above.
  • The embassy will issue the visa within 1 to 3 weeks, at which point the employee can travel to Saudi Arabia.
  • In Saudi Arabia, the employee must apply for a residency permit, or  iqama , through the Ministry of Labor.
  • The Ministry of Labor will forward the approved application to the Ministry of Interior, where the  iqama  will be issued through the Directorate General for Passports.

Employees must carry their  iqama  at all times to prove that they are legally allowed to live and work in Saudi Arabia.

If employees want to travel in and out of Saudi Arabia during the duration of their employment, they need to apply for an Exit/Re-Entry Permit through the Ministry of Interior. This permit is generally issued within 1 week.

Other important considerations

Employees need to be aware that the authorities in Saudi Arabia have rules that need to be followed at all times. Inappropriate behavior may result in denial of entry into the country or deportation. Additionally, Islam is the only religion that may be celebrated publicly in Saudi Arabia.

If any employees plan to bring spouses or children to Saudi Arabia, they will need to obtain family visit visas.

Work Visa KSA: Navigating the Path to Employment in Saudi Arabia

In this article, we unpack the subject of work visas in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) so that you can ensure you have all bases covered to work successfully.

Saudi Arabia, with its booming economy and ambitious Vision 2030 plan, continues to attract skilled professionals from around the world. If you're considering working in the Kingdom, you'll likely need a work visa (also known as an Iqama ) to legally live and work in this dynamic country.

In this article, we will delve into the intricacies of obtaining a work visa in Saudi Arabia and the key information you need to know to kickstart your career journey in the land of opportunity.

Understanding the Work Visa System

The Saudi Arabian work visa system is designed to facilitate the entry of foreign workers while ensuring that the country's labor market remains regulated and controlled. Here are the essential aspects of the work visa system:

1. Sponsorship

To obtain a work visa, you must have a Saudi employer willing to sponsor you. The sponsoring company or individual will play a crucial role in the application process.

2. Eligibility Criteria

Saudi Arabia has specific criteria for granting work visas, which may vary depending on your profession and the type of work you intend to undertake. It's essential to check with your employer and Saudi authorities for the exact requirements.

3. Application Process

The process of obtaining a work visa can be intricate. Typically, your employer will initiate the application on your behalf. This involves submitting various documents to the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, in some cases, the Ministry of Labor.

4. Medical Examination

As part of the visa application process, you may be required to undergo a medical examination to ensure you are free from contagious diseases.

5. Contract and Job Offer

You will need a signed employment contract that outlines your job, salary, and other relevant terms and conditions. This contract must be attested by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce and Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

6. Visa Issuance

Once all necessary documentation is submitted and approved, you will receive your work visa, also known as the Iqama. The Iqama serves as your residence permit and identification in Saudi Arabia.

Work visas are typically valid for one year and can be renewed annually as long as you remain employed in Saudi Arabia. The renewal process usually involves similar documentation and fees as the initial application.

8. Family Sponsorship

If you hold a valid work visa, you may be eligible to sponsor your family members (spouse, children) to live with you in Saudi Arabia.

Important Considerations

  • Changing Employers : It's important to note that your work visa is tied to your sponsoring employer. If you wish to change jobs, you will need to go through a formal process that includes obtaining a release letter (No Objection Certificate) from your current employer.
  • Exit/Re-entry Visa : Before leaving Saudi Arabia for any reason, you will need an exit/re-entry visa. Failure to obtain this visa may result in difficulties when trying to re-enter the country.
  • Legal Compliance : Ensure you understand and adhere to the laws and regulations of Saudi Arabia. Violations can result in fines, deportation, or legal action.
  • Language Requirements : Depending on your profession, you may need to demonstrate proficiency in Arabic or English.

Work Visa KSA: Important to Navigate Carefully

Obtaining a work visa in Saudi Arabia is a necessary step for foreign professionals seeking opportunities in this thriving nation. While the process may seem complex, having a knowledgeable employer and access to accurate information can simplify the journey.

Having supplied contract and remote staff to clients in the Middle East for several years, I have been used to a very manual and labor-heavy process when it comes to payroll and compliance. After one demonstration from the team at RemotePass I switched from using an existing supplier, as I get better value and service using this platform.

The Saudi Arabian government has created a new short-term work visa for eligible foreign nationals.

What are the Changes?

Saudi Arabia's new visa, called the Temporary Work Visit Visa, allows temporary work in Saudi Arabia under certain conditions. The visa allows foreign nationals to conduct work in Saudi Arabia for up to 90 days each year, provided they work for a visa-sponsoring entity. The visa also permits multiple entries.

What Should Employers and Applicants Know?

Employers must meet certain eligibility criteria to qualify for the new visa quota. Employers must be classified at the "medium-green" level in the Nitaqat scheme. They must also comply with obligations in the Wages Protection System, and they must ensure that their foreign workers have valid work authorization.

Eligible employers may obtain a visa quota through the Qiwa portal. Each employer may receive up to 50 visas. The visa is valid for one year, and it cannot be transferred to other employers. Applicants must obtain their visa from a Saudi consular post or visa agent abroad.

Is your organization planning an expansion into the Middle Eastern country of Saudi Arabia? Standard requirements for Saudi Arabia work visas

Citizens of countries belonging to the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (also known as the Gulf Cooperation Council) can generally  enter Saudi Arabia  visa-free. Nationals of any other countries, however, will need a visa for Saudi Arabia.

When applying for a Saudi Arabia work permit, the exact requirements can vary on a case-by-case basis. However, there are some standard requirements that all applicants will need:

  • An official contract of employment
  • Valid passport
  • Application form
  • Application fees
  • Medical check
  • Proof of qualifications/work experience
  • Criminal record check

Types of Saudi Arabia visas

The two main types of visas for business purposes are employment visas and business visit visas. Of these, your employees will need employment visas if they wish to stay and work in Saudi Arabia beyond the short-term.

How to get a Saudi Arabia work visa

To obtain a work visa for Saudi Arabia, you, the employer, will need to handle the majority of the application process. Firstly, you will need to register officially with the Saudi Government (the Ministry of Interior specifically). When registered, you should file a Saudi Arabia work visa application with the Ministry of Labor, which should be processed within two weeks. Once approved, the employee can file their application with their local Saudi embassy/consulate.

When the employee’s visa is approved (which can take several weeks), they can travel to Saudi Arabia. In Saudi Arabia, they will need to apply for an Iqama (residency permit) via the Ministry of Labor.

Additional considerations

Employees should be careful to always carry their Iqama (residency permit) with them while in Saudi Arabia, as it may be checked at any time. Also, it is important to note that anybody wishing to leave and re-enter the country will need a re-entry permit, which can be accessed via the Ministry of Interior.

Finally, foreign employees will need to be aware of the cultural differences present in Saudi Arabia. As a strongly Muslim country, there are many strict laws and customs that employees should abide by. For example, conservative clothing should be worn at all times, public affection is banned, and women are generally expected to wear religious clothing such as a hijab. These rules, among others, are very strictly enforced, so should be followed.

How can Horizons help?

At Horizons, our expansion specialists help businesses expand to Saudi Arabia by ensuring they understand the immigration rules and can obtain all the necessary visas for their employees. Our experts offer advice and custom outsourcing services to support you through the country’s complex visa application process. We can ensure that you and your foreign employees are in full compliance with Saudi Arabia’s strict immigration and employment regulations, speed up the expansion process, and provide answers to any queries you might have about visas.

In addition, we offer comprehensive outsourcing solutions to cover recruitment, payroll, HR, administration, and more to help your company start trading and expanding in Saudi Arabia, even if you don’t have an official subsidiary in the country.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia introduces new work visa

  • Legal Development 23 May 2023 23 May 2023

Middle East

Top workplace issues

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has recently introduced a new work visa, known as the "Temporary Work Visa", which replaces the previous "Work Visit Visa". The new visa is aimed at making it easier for businesses to bring in foreign workers for short-term assignments and should enable employers to resource their commercial activities more readily.

The Temporary Work Visa must be used within one year of its issue and allows foreign workers to work in KSA for up to 90 days, with the option to extend for an additional 90 days. The visa is valid for multiple entries, meaning that the employees can enter and exit the country as often as they need during the 90-day period.

Advantages of the Temporary Work Visa

One of the biggest advantages of the new visa is that it is much faster and easier to obtain in comparison with the previous Work Visit Visa, as issuing the temporary work visa is immediate and does not require any supporting documents for the employee (eg attested certificates). It is also extendable while the holder is in country. It is not restricted largely to only technical personnel (e.g., engineers) and is not in practice restricted to men (which the old Work Visit Visa were in practice). With the Kingdom experiencing record growth and hosting some of the largest projects in the world, another advantage of the visa is that it could enable greater mobility within multinational employers, in the sense of permitting non-KSA based employees to try work in the Kingdom before making a more permanent move or relocation.

Eligibility requirements

An employer applying for a Temporary Work Visa (the application must be made through Qiwa) must meet the following conditions:

  • The establishment should have a valid Commercial Register (CR), except for activities that do not require a commercial registration;
  • The status of the establishment should be “Existing”;
  • The establishment is required to have a Nitiqat rating of medium green or higher;
  • The establishment should not have any negative remarks with regards to Wage Protection System (WPS); and
  • The establishment should have visa issuance balance.

An employer with expired pre-existing visas will have its application denied.

The Employment Visa serves as the primary gateway for individuals seeking to work in Saudi Arabia. It is designed to align with the Kingdom’s regulations and labor market needs, providing a structured path from research to visa approval . The visa process is initiated by a Saudi employer, who must obtain a work permit on behalf of the prospective employee. This is followed by the visa application, which involves various documentation and compliance with Saudi labor laws.

Once approved, the visa allows for legal employment within the country, and includes steps such as collecting the visa, traveling to Saudi Arabia, and completing arrival procedures. The initial visa typically has a one-year validity, with the possibility of extension, subject to the fulfillment of visa requirements and the employer’s discretion. The Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MLSD) has introduced new work visas with a two-year validity to address operational issues faced by private sector enterprises, facilitating their growth and stability.

For those planning to embark on this journey, it is essential to understand the different types of employment visas available, each tailored to specific roles and industries. These include single-entry visas for short-term assignments and multiple-entry visas for ongoing projects. The business visit visa, on the other hand, is reserved for non-employment activities such as attending conferences or exhibitions.

The application process for a Saudi Arabia work visa, which can also be done by Work Visa Agencies for Saudi Arabia involves several critical steps, each requiring careful attention to detail. Firstly, ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the application date and has two consecutive blank pages. You will need to provide two recent passport-sized colored photographs against a white background.

Next, fill in your personal and passport information accurately on the application form. It’s essential to detail your residency status, particularly if you hold a visa from the US, UK, Schengen area, or GCC countries. Agreeing to the terms and conditions of the e-visa application process is a mandatory step before submission.

The following table provides an overview of the main requirements for the Saudi Arabia work visa application:

After completing the form, submit your application along with the necessary fees to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the designated authority. Keep copies of all documents, including payment receipts, for future reference. The processing time varies, so stay informed by regularly checking the status of your application.

Extension and Renewal Procedures

The process of extending and renewing work visas in Saudi Arabia is governed by specific regulations. Conditions for issuing an exit and re-entry visa include the payment of any outstanding fines, ensuring that the passport is valid for more than 90 days, the absence of any legal violations, and the presence of the individual within the country at the time of application.

For those holding Premium Residency, there are options for both limited and unlimited durations. The limited duration comes with an annual fee, which decreases by 2% per annum when applied for multiple years. Conversely, the unlimited duration can be secured with a one-time fee. The table below outlines the fees for Premium Residency:

It’s important to note that the benefits of Premium Residency extend to family members in the event of the holder’s death or loss of competency, provided the residency has not been cancelled for other reasons. For those with ‘Gifted Residency’, renewal is contingent upon meeting the eligibility criteria and residing in the Kingdom for at least 30 months within a five-year period.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MLSD) has introduced new work visas with a validity of two years, aimed at addressing operational challenges faced by private sector companies. These visas can be issued or renewed, subject to the fulfillment of visa requirements.

Business Visit Visa: Exploring Business Opportunities

Purpose and Eligibility Criteria

The Business Visit Visa serves as a gateway for professionals and entrepreneurs looking to explore business opportunities within Saudi Arabia. Eligibility for this visa is determined by several criteria , including the purpose of the visit, the applicant’s professional status, and the nature of the business activities to be conducted.

To apply for a Business Visit Visa, candidates must possess a valid passport and provide proof of their business intentions, such as an invitation from a Saudi company. Additionally, applicants are required to demonstrate financial solvency and have a clean criminal record, as evidenced by a police report. A medical report confirming the absence of communicable diseases is also mandatory.

For individuals with exceptional talent in sports, cultural, or artistic fields, the ‘Gifted Residency’ offers a specialized pathway. This visa is granted to those who have received notable awards or meet the specific eligibility criteria set by the Saudi Ministry of Sports or Ministry of Culture. The visa is valid for five years and can be renewed, provided the individual continues to meet the eligibility requirements and resides in the Kingdom for at least 30 months during the five-year period.

Application Steps and Necessary Documentation

The application process for a Business Visit Visa in Saudi Arabia is streamlined and can be completed online. Eligible individuals do not need to provide proof of a sponsor and can initiate the process through Saudi Arabia’s dedicated online platform for visa services. The following list outlines the essential steps and documentation required for the application:

  • Job Search and Offer Acceptance : Secure a job offer from a Saudi employer and accept it to begin the visa process.
  • Document Compilation : Gather all necessary documents, ensuring they are properly attested and authenticated.
  • Fill in Personal Information : Provide your personal details as required by the application form.
  • Enter Passport Information : Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay, and input all relevant details.
  • Provide Residency Information : Detail your residency status, particularly if you hold a visa from the US, UK, Schengen area, or GCC countries.
  • Agree to the Terms & Conditions : Read and accept the terms and conditions of the e-visa application process.

It is crucial to maintain copies of all submitted documents, including the application form and payment receipts, for future reference. Regularly check official government websites for updates on visa regulations, as changes may impact your application. Ensure all information provided is accurate and aligns with the supporting documents to avoid any delays or rejection.

Visa Duration and Limitations

The duration and validity of a Business Visit Visa in Saudi Arabia are contingent upon the nature of the business event and the type of visa obtained. A multiple-entry business visa can be issued for durations of 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, or 5 years, allowing a maximum stay of 90 days per trip. This flexibility accommodates the varying needs of business travelers engaging in activities such as establishing partnerships, setting up companies, or attending trade missions.

For those planning short-term visits, such as attending conferences or meetings, a single-entry visa is available. This visa is valid for a single visit with a maximum stay of 30 days. It is crucial for visitors to ensure that their visa remains valid for the entire duration of their stay, as Saudi Arabia does not permit extensions beyond the visa’s allotted time.

Here is a quick overview of the visa types and their respective durations:

  • Commercial visa: Designed for long-term commercial activities.
  • Single-entry visa: Valid for 30 days, ideal for short-term business trips.
  • Multiple-entry visa: Valid for up to 5 years, with a 90-day maximum stay per visit.

It is important to note that the Ministry of Labor and Social Development (MLSD) had previously amended visa durations for overseas workers in the private sector, reducing them to 12 months from the earlier 2-year validity. However, the MLSD has reintroduced the 2-year visa validity to address operational challenges faced by private enterprises, facilitating their growth and stability within the Kingdom.

This visa necessitates sponsorship from a resident family member and the submission of documents proving the familial relationship. Guests must be a minimum of 18 years old unless accompanied by a legal guardian. It is crucial to ensure that all required documents are prepared in advance to facilitate a smooth application process.

The application process for a Family visit visa includes several steps:

  • Provide residency information, which is particularly important for holders of US, UK, Schengen, or GCC visas.
  • Read and agree to the terms and conditions of the visa application.

Applicants should be aware that visa eligibility is contingent upon being a citizen of a visa-eligible country and having a valid passport with at least 6 months remaining beyond the intended stay.

Personal Visit Visa Application

Applying for a Personal Visit Visa to Saudi Arabia involves a series of steps to ensure a successful application. Begin by obtaining a sponsorship letter from your Saudi sponsor, which should outline the purpose of your visit, the duration of your stay, and who will bear the financial responsibility during your stay.

Next, prepare the necessary documents, including the invitation letter, a valid passport, and proof of financial means. The application is submitted through the official Saudi visa website, where you will also upload your supporting documents.

Here is a simplified list of steps to follow:

  • Visit the official Saudi eVisa website and create an account.
  • Select “Personal Visit Visa” and start the individual application.
  • Fill out the application form with personal, passport, and residency details.
  • Agree to the terms & conditions of the e-visa application process.
  • Submit the application and pay the visa fee online.

Companion Visa for Dependents

The Companion Visa is a provision for the spouses and dependents of those holding valid work visas in Saudi Arabia, allowing them to reside in the Kingdom. Eligibility for this visa is strictly tied to the status of the primary work permit holder , and its validity is typically aligned with that of the sponsor’s work permit.

To apply for a Companion Visa, several key documents are required, including proof of relationship to the sponsor, a copy of the sponsor’s work permit, and other relevant documentation. The process is facilitated through an e-service provided by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, streamlining the application process for beneficiaries.

Here is a summary of the essential requirements:

  • Proof of relationship to the sponsor
  • Copy of the sponsor’s valid work permit
  • Additional supporting documents, as necessary

Eligibility and Validity

To be eligible for a Dependent Visa in Saudi Arabia, applicants must meet certain criteria that ensure they are suitable for entry and residence in the Kingdom. A valid passport and proof of financial solvency are fundamental requirements , along with a clean police record and a medical report certifying the absence of communicable diseases.

The validity of the Dependent Visa is typically aligned with the duration of the principal visa holder’s stay. It is important to note that the visa’s duration may vary depending on the specific circumstances of the principal visa holder’s employment or residency status.

  • Valid Passport
  • Financial Solvency Proof
  • Clean Police Record
  • Medical Clearance

These documents are essential in demonstrating the applicant’s readiness and compliance with Saudi Arabian immigration policies. Applicants should ensure that all documents are up-to-date and valid for the entire period of their intended stay.

Application Process for Dependents

The process of applying for a Dependent Visa in Saudi Arabia is straightforward but requires careful attention to detail. Eligibility for this visa is strictly for the dependents of expatriates holding valid work permits. The validity of the Dependent Visa is directly aligned with the sponsor’s work permit, ensuring family members can reside in Saudi Arabia for the duration of the sponsor’s employment.

To apply, the following essential documents and requirements must be gathered:

  • Documentation verifying the relationship with the sponsor (such as a marriage certificate or birth certificate) is required.
  • A copy of the sponsor’s valid work permit
  • A valid passport for each dependent
  • Financial solvency proof, if applicable
  • A clean police report
  • A medical report confirming the absence of communicable diseases

Once all the necessary documentation is compiled, the application can be submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the relevant authority, either online or in person. It is crucial to keep a copy of the payment receipt after paying the visa fees, as it forms an integral part of the application documentation. The processing time for the application can vary, so applicants should regularly check the status through the available channels.

Rights and Restrictions

Holders of a Dependent Visa in Saudi Arabia are granted certain rights and privileges , that aim to facilitate a comfortable and stable family life for expatriates. These rights include the ability to reside in the Kingdom with family members, own real estate for various purposes, and benefit from usufruct arrangements in specific cities under certain conditions.

However, there are also restrictions that must be adhered to. Dependents cannot engage in employment without the proper authorization and visa type. The rights provided by the Dependent Visa are tied to the validity of the primary visa holder’s status; in the event of death or loss of competency, these benefits extend to the family, but they are not transferable upon cancellation for other reasons.

Here is a summary of the key rights and restrictions:

  • Residence in the Kingdom with family members
  • Ownership of real estate (excluding certain areas)
  • Usufruct on real estate in specified cities for up to 99 years
  • No employment without proper visa
  • Rights are contingent on the primary visa holder’s status

Residence Visa: Long-Term Stay in Saudi Arabia

Residence Visa: Long-Term Stay in Saudi Arabia

Criteria for Obtaining a Residence Visa

To qualify for a residence visa in Saudi Arabia, applicants must meet several criteria that ensure they are suitable for a long-term stay. A valid passport is the most fundamental requirement, serving as the primary identification document. Financial solvency is also crucial, as it demonstrates the applicant’s ability to support themselves without burdening the state.

In addition to these, a clean criminal record is mandatory, as evidenced by a police report. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment. A medical report confirming the absence of communicable diseases is another essential requirement, reflecting the country’s focus on public health.

For specific groups, such as UK, US, and EU residents, holding a permanent residence permit from their respective regions is necessary. Similarly, GCC residents must have a GCC residency visa with sufficient validity. These requirements underscore the importance of legal and orderly immigration processes.

Here are some tips for applicants:

  • Double-check all required documents for your e-visa application.
  • Ensure all information provided on the application form is accurate and matches your travel documents.

Benefits and Responsibilities

Holding a Saudi Iqama, or Premium Residency, comes with a plethora of benefits that enhance the living experience of non-Saudi nationals in the Kingdom. These privileges extend to various aspects of life, including employment flexibility and travel freedom. For instance, Premium Residency holders and their family members can take up jobs in the private sector and have the liberty to change employers without the need for a sponsor change. This significant advantage fosters a more dynamic and adaptable workforce.

Family members of the Premium Residency holder also enjoy continued benefits in the event of the holder’s death or loss of competency, ensuring stability and security for dependents. It is important to note, however, that these benefits are subject to specific requirements and conditions that must be met. The responsibilities of the residency holders include adhering to the regulatory provisions and meeting claim deadlines to safeguard their rights both within and outside legal frameworks.

For a comprehensive understanding of the privileges and responsibilities associated with the Saudi Iqama, individuals are encouraged to refer to the official Premium Residency Law, which outlines all pertinent information in detail.

Procedure for Application and Renewal

The application and renewal process for a residence visa in Saudi Arabia is a systematic procedure that requires attention to detail and adherence to the regulations set forth by the Saudi authorities. Renewing a Residence Permit (Iqama) is a service that can be conveniently accessed through the Absher Platform, which allows users to renew residence permits for family members or domestic workers they sponsor.

To initiate the application or renewal process, applicants must first ensure they have a valid passport and all required personal, passport, and residency information at hand. The process typically involves the following steps:

  • Fill in personal information as required by the application form.
  • Enter passport details, ensuring all data is current and valid.
  • Provide residency status, particularly if holding visas or residency in the US, UK, Schengen area, or GCC countries.
  • Agree to the terms and conditions of the visa application process.

After submitting the application and paying the necessary fees, it is crucial to maintain copies of all documents, including the application form and payment receipts. Regularly checking the status of the application through official channels is also recommended to stay informed of any updates or changes in visa regulations.

The transit visa is a specific type of visa designed for individuals who need to pass through Saudi Arabia en route to another destination. This visa is particularly relevant for travelers who have layovers in the Kingdom lasting more than 12 hours. It’s important to note that the transit visa does not permit the holder to exit the airport unless they have a layover of over 12 hours, which necessitates leaving the airport for accommodation or other purposes.

To apply for a transit visa, applicants must follow a series of steps, starting with ensuring they meet the eligibility criteria. The process typically involves submitting an application form, providing personal and passport information, and agreeing to the terms and conditions set forth by the Saudi authorities. Begin by ensuring your passport is valid for at least six months from the application date, with two consecutive blank pages available. You will also need to provide two recent passport-sized colored photographs on a white background, adhering to the specified dimensions of 2″ x 2″.

When filling out the application form, it’s crucial to provide accurate personal, passport, and residency information. As part of the process, you must read and agree to the terms and conditions outlined by the Saudi visa authorities. To avoid any complications, regularly check for updates on visa regulations and ensure all submitted information is consistent with your supporting documents. Keep copies of all documents, including the application form and payment receipts, for future reference. This comprehensive approach will help you navigate the application process smoothly and increase the chances of a hassle-free visa acquisition .

Conditions and Duration of Stay

The conditions and duration of stay for transit visas in Saudi Arabia are designed to accommodate travelers passing through the country. Transit visas are typically valid for a single entry and allow a stay of up to 96 hours. This is ideal for those who have a stopover in cities like Makkah and wish to make a short visit. The visa’s validity extends to 90 days from the date of issuance, providing flexibility for scheduling travel.

For those seeking longer stays or multiple entries, Saudi Arabia offers different types of visas, such as the Single-entry visa and the Multiple-entry visa. The Single-entry visa permits a stay of up to 30 days, while the Multiple-entry visa allows for multiple visits within a year, with each stay capped at 90 days.

Premium Residency is another option for individuals who meet certain criteria, offering more freedom of movement. It comes in two categories: ‘Permanent’ and ‘Definite Period’. The ‘Investor Residency’ is permanent, whereas the ‘Entrepreneur Residency’ and other specific types are valid for five years and can be renewed.

Understanding Visa Costs and Fees

Understanding Visa Costs and Fees

Breakdown of Visa Application Fees

Understanding the cost structure of visa application fees is crucial for applicants planning to work or visit Saudi Arabia. The charges fluctuate based on the category and duration of the visa. Payment is typically made through official government portals, where applicants can complete the process in a few simple steps.

Here is a general outline of the payment process:

  • Make the application payment: Pay the e-visa application fee online from a secure server.
  • A 5% surcharge may apply for international card transactions in USD. Using services like Atlys can help avoid these additional charges.
  • Keep the payment receipt: It is an essential part of your visa documentation.

It’s important to regularly check official government websites for any updates on visa fees and to ensure that all information provided during the application is accurate and consistent with supporting documents. Inconsistencies may result in the application being delayed or rejected.

Additional Costs: Medical and Attestation Fees

Beyond the basic visa application fees, applicants must also budget for medical and attestation fees. Medical check-ups are mandatory and ensure that the applicant is free from communicable diseases, a requirement for the issuance of a Saudi visa. These medical examinations must be conducted at accredited clinics and may vary in cost.

Attestation fees are another additional cost that applicants should anticipate. Attestation is the process of certifying the authenticity of documents, such as educational certificates and police clearance reports, by authorized bodies. This step is crucial for the visa application process and can incur varying charges depending on the type of document and the country of issuance.

Here is a breakdown of potential additional costs:

It’s important to note that these costs are estimates and may change based on the applicant’s specific circumstances and the current rates at the time of application. Applicants should also be aware of any service charges or surcharges that may apply when making payments, especially when using international cards.

Payment Methods and Financial Planning

Securing a work visa for Saudi Arabia involves various costs, and understanding the available payment methods is crucial for efficient financial planning. Applicants should prepare for the financial aspect of visa processing in advance to ensure a smooth application experience.

Payment for visa fees can typically be made through several channels:

  • Bank transfers
  • Credit or debit cards
  • Payment at the embassy or consulate
  • Authorized visa service centers

It’s important to verify the accepted payment methods with the specific Saudi embassy or consulate, as these may vary by location. Additionally, applicants should account for currency exchange rates and potential transaction fees when budgeting for visa costs.

Financial planning for visa applications should also consider indirect expenses such as travel costs for attending visa interviews, medical examination fees, and document attestation charges. Creating a comprehensive budget that includes all these elements will help in managing the overall costs associated with obtaining a Saudi work visa.

The Employer’s Role in Securing Work Visas

visit work visa saudi arabia

Initiating the Work Permit Application

The process of obtaining a work permit for Saudi Arabia begins with the employer’s proactive role. It is the responsibility of the Saudi employer to initiate the work permit application through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development. This involves providing the necessary documents and information pertinent to the prospective employee.

To ensure a smooth application process, the following steps are typically taken by the employer:

  • Job offer acceptance and collection of necessary details from the candidate.
  • Compilation of required documents, ensuring they are properly attested and authenticated.
  • Submission of the application along with the mandatory health clearance results and, if required, an attested police clearance certificate.

Upon successful submission, the employer must then monitor the application’s progress and communicate any updates or additional requirements to the candidate. This collaborative effort between the employer and the prospective employee is crucial for a successful visa acquisition.

Employer Responsibilities and Compliance

Employers in Saudi Arabia play a pivotal role in ensuring compliance with the country’s labor laws and visa regulations. Forward-thinking businesses understand that adherence to these rules is not only a legal obligation but also crucial for maintaining their reputation and relationships with stakeholders. Non-compliance can lead to serious liabilities and negatively affect a company’s standing with customers, investors, and regulatory authorities.

To prevent issues such as labor disruptions, high employee turnover, and legal penalties, employers must stay informed and up-to-date with the latest employment laws, including Saudization requirements. Al-Ghazzawi and Partners emphasize the importance of sound employer-employee relations and the need for businesses to be on the right side of labor regulations. They offer guidance to meet claim deadlines and ensure that all regulatory provisions are adeptly fulfilled, safeguarding the rights and interests of the business.

Employers are also responsible for initiating the work permit application process for their foreign employees and supporting them throughout the visa acquisition journey. This includes providing necessary documentation, covering visa costs, and ensuring that employees are aware of their rights and restrictions while residing in Saudi Arabia.

Supporting Employee Visa Acquisition

Employers play a crucial role in the visa acquisition process for their prospective foreign employees. Visas are only granted to individuals with professional and academic qualifications that are necessary in Saudi Arabia, emphasizing the importance of the employer’s support in demonstrating the unique value of the candidate. Employers must ensure that the candidates they sponsor meet the stringent criteria set by Saudi immigration authorities.

To facilitate the process, employers should consider the following steps:

  • Conduct thorough research on the type of visa and the specific requirements for the position.
  • Seek professional assistance from immigration consultants to streamline the application process.
  • Stay informed about any changes in Saudi immigration laws and requirements to avoid any potential issues.

By adhering to these guidelines, employers can significantly enhance the chances of a successful visa application for their employees, thereby expanding their business with the right talent on board.

Health and Police Clearance for Visa Applicants

visit work visa saudi arabia

Mandatory Health Clearance Procedure

Securing a work permit in Saudi Arabia necessitates a comprehensive health clearance. Applicants must undergo a medical examination at an approved health center. The purpose of this examination is to ensure that the individual does not have any communicable diseases that could pose a public health risk.

The health certificate obtained from this examination is a critical component of the visa application process. It is essential to visit a medical center that is recognized by the Saudi authorities to avoid any complications in the application process.

Here are the steps involved in obtaining the mandatory health clearance:

  • Schedule an appointment with an approved health center.
  • Undergo the medical examination as per the center’s guidelines.
  • Receive the health certificate upon successful completion of the examination.
  • Include the health certificate with your visa application submission.

Obtaining and Attesting Police Clearance Certificate

Securing a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) is a critical step in the visa application process for Saudi Arabia. This document serves as proof that the applicant has no criminal record and is required for various visa categories, including the ‘Premium Residency’ visa. To obtain a PCC, applicants must follow a series of steps, which typically involve a visit to the local police station or relevant authority in their country of residence.

Once acquired, the PCC must be attested to confirm its authenticity. This involves getting the document certified by the Saudi embassy or consulate, or through a process of legalisation that may include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the applicant’s home country. It’s important to ensure that all steps are followed correctly to avoid any complications or delays in the visa application process.

Here is a simplified checklist for obtaining and attesting a Police Clearance Certificate:

  • Visit the local police authority to apply for the PCC.
  • Ensure the PCC is issued with all necessary details and is up-to-date.
  • Have the PCC attested by the relevant government bodies, which may include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Saudi embassy.
  • Include the attested PCC with your visa application submission.

Importance in the Visa Application Process

The importance of health and police clearances in the visa application process cannot be overstated. Ensuring that these clearances are obtained and properly attested is crucial for a successful visa application. Health clearances confirm the applicant’s fitness to enter Saudi Arabia, while police clearances certify the applicant’s good conduct.

Adherence to the visa application requirements, including health and police clearances, is essential. Below is a list of steps to ensure the importance of these documents is reflected in your application:

  • Research Thoroughly: Understand the specific health and police clearance requirements for your visa category.
  • Professional Assistance: Consider hiring experts to help navigate the complexities of obtaining and attesting these documents.
  • Stay Informed: Regularly check for any updates to the clearance requirements or visa regulations.
  • Document Accuracy: Ensure all information provided is accurate and matches the supporting documents.
  • Submission of Application: Submit the application along with the clearances to the relevant authority, either online or in person.
  • Payment of Fees: Pay the necessary fees and keep the receipts as part of your documentation.

Remember, any discrepancies or omissions in these documents can lead to delays or rejection of the visa application. Therefore, meticulous preparation and organization of health and police clearances are imperative for a smooth visa application process.

Saudi Arabia Work Visa Types in 2023

Multiple work visa types are available in Saudi Arabia, each catering to specific job categories and employment conditions. The Saudi work visa application process requires sponsorship by a Saudi employer and approval from the Saudi Ministry of Labor and Social Development.

Temporary Work Visa

The Temporary Work Visa is for foreign workers who are hired for short-term jobs, typically less than 90 days. Contractors, consultants, or technicians involved in short-term projects or assignments often use this visa.

Eligibility

Applicants for a Temporary Work Visa must:

  • Have a valid offer or contract from a Saudi employer.
  • Possess the skills, qualifications, and experience required for the role they will fulfill.

Requirements

The application for a Temporary Work Visa typically includes:

  • A completed visa application form.
  • Passport with a minimum of six months validity.
  • Two passport-sized photos.
  • A medical report certifying the applicant is free from infectious diseases.
  • Police clearance certificate.
  • Copies of academic or professional qualifications, if applicable.

A Temporary Work Visa is generally valid for the duration of the project or contract. The exact duration should be specified in the job offer or contract from the Saudi employer.

Permanent Work Visa

The Permanent Work Visa, also known as Iqama, is for foreign workers who have secured long-term employment in Saudi Arabia. It’s valid for one to two years and is renewable as long as the employment continues. Workers under this visa enjoy the same benefits and rights as Saudi citizens, excluding political rights.

To be eligible for a Permanent Work Visa, applicants must:

  • Meet the qualifications and experience required for the job role.

  • A medical report from a recognized health center or hospital, certifying the applicant is free from infectious diseases.
  • Copies of academic or professional qualifications.
  • An employment contract from a Saudi employer.

The validity of a Permanent Work Visa is usually linked to the employment contract’s duration, and it can be extended or renewed as long as the employment continues.

The Block Visa is an agreement between an employer and the Saudi government where the employer is granted a certain number of visas to bring foreign employees into the country. The visas are “blocked” for the company’s use only.

A Block Visa is not issued to individuals but to companies. Therefore, the company must:

  • Be registered and operating in Saudi Arabia.
  • Prove the need for foreign employees and that these roles can’t be filled by Saudi citizens.

The application for a Block Visa usually includes:

  • A completed application form.
  • A letter from the company stating the need for foreign workers and the number required.
  • Supporting documents showing the company’s registration and business activities in Saudi Arabia.

The validity of a Block Visa depends on the number of foreign workers required and the timeline set by the Ministry of Labor. The company can then recruit foreign workers against this visa within the set timeline.

Business Visa

The Business Visa is not a work visa per se but is often used by business people who are visiting Saudi Arabia for a short period for meetings, conferences, or business negotiations. It doesn’t allow for employment within the country.

Applicants for a Business Visa must:

  • Have an official invitation from a Saudi company or government department.
  • Be conducting business or representing their employer in Saudi Arabia.

The application for a Business Visa typically includes:

  • A letter of invitation from a Saudi company or government department.
  • A letter from the applicant’s employer confirming the applicant’s position and the purpose of the visit.

A Business Visa is usually valid for 30 to 90 days, depending on the specific requirements of your business activities. It is also typically single-entry, but multiple-entry visas can be issued in some cases.

Work Visit Visa

The Work Visit Visa is suitable for professionals who need to perform specific professional tasks in Saudi Arabia for a limited period, such as attending business meetings, consulting, training, or performing specialized tasks. The applicant’s employer is usually a company based outside of Saudi Arabia.

Applicants for a Work Visit Visa must:

  • Have an official invitation or job offer from a Saudi company.
  • Be conducting short-term work for a Saudi employer.

The application for a Work Visit Visa generally includes:

  • A letter from the Saudi company specifying the nature of the work, duration of the visit, and details of the Saudi sponsor.

A Work Visit Visa is usually valid for up to 90 days and is not renewable or extendable. It is meant for temporary work in Saudi Arabia and not for long-term or permanent employment.

Government Work Visa

The Government Work Visa is for individuals who are employed directly by the Saudi government or a government-owned corporation. These visas are generally arranged directly by the employing government body.

To be eligible for a Government Work Visa, applicants must:

  • Have an official invitation or job offer from a Saudi government department.
  • Be conducting work for a Saudi government department.

The application for a Government Work Visa usually includes:

  • An official invitation letter from the Saudi government department.

The validity of a Government Work Visa depends on the duration specified in the invitation letter from the Saudi government department. It is typically valid for the duration of the project or task.

Temporary Work Visit Visa

The Temporary Work Visit Visa is for those coming to Saudi Arabia for a limited period to perform particular tasks or jobs. It’s similar to the regular Work Visit Visa, but its validity is shorter, typically 30 days.

To be eligible for a Temporary Work Visit Visa, an individual should:

  • Have an official invitation from a Saudi company.
  • Be engaged in specific, temporary work for a Saudi employer.

The application for a Temporary Work Visit Visa typically requires:

  • A passport with at least six months of validity.

The Temporary Work Visit Visa is usually valid for a duration of up to 90 days, depending on the specific requirements of your temporary work activities. The visa is non-renewable, and the individual must leave Saudi Arabia after the completion of their work.

Domestic Labor Visa

The Domestic Labor Visa is for foreign nationals employed in domestic positions, such as housemaids, drivers, gardeners, or cooks. The visa is linked to a specific employer who acts as the sponsor.

For the Domestic Labor Visa, the applicant should:

  • Have a valid job offer for a domestic position (such as a housekeeper, driver, gardener, or nanny) from a private individual or family in Saudi Arabia.
  • Meet the age and health requirements specified by Saudi regulations.

The requirements for a Domestic Labor Visa usually include:

  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • A valid job contract, stamped by the Saudi Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of Labor.
  • Medical fitness certificate issued by a clinic approved by the Saudi embassy.
  • Clearance certificate from the police in the country of origin to verify no criminal record.

The Domestic Labor Visa is typically valid for one to two years, depending on the contract with the employer. This visa is renewable as long as the individual continues to work for the same employer and the employer wishes to extend the contract.

Saudi Arabia provides a variety of work visa options to cater to its diverse labor market needs. Each visa has specific requirements and limitations, and potential applicants must carefully consider their employment type, duration, and other factors before applying. The country continues to diversify its economy under Vision 2030, and with that comes a broad spectrum of opportunities for foreign workers.

Middle East latest: We are 'professional', Israeli military says after killing aid workers, including Briton, in airstrike

The IDF has expressed its "sincere sorrow" for the deaths of seven aid workers, including one from the UK, in a strike it launched on Gaza. A spokesman insisted the IDF was "committed to international law" after the attack, and vowed to share findings of an investigation.

Rishi Sunak says he is "shocked and saddened" by reports that seven World Central kitchen aid workers, including one Briton, were killed in Gaza last night.

Speaking during a visit to the North East of England, Mr Sunak said: "We are asking Israel to investigate what happened urgently, because clearly there are questions that need to be answered.

"My thoughts are with their friends and family.

"They are doing fantastic work bringing alleviation to the suffering that many are experiencing in Gaza.

"They should be praised and commended for what they are doing.

"They need to be allowed to do that work unhindered and it is incumbent on Israel to make sure they can do that."

His comments echo those by Lord Cameron, the foreign secretary, earlier.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has vowed revenge on Israel.

In words reported by state media, he said Israel would regret its attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian city of Damascus.

An adviser to Khamenei said the US has responsibility, whether Washington was aware of the attack or not.

The strike killed two Iranian generals and five officers.

Israel rarely acknowledges strikes against Iranian targets and said it had no comment on the latest attack in Syria.

The Kremlin has also weighed in, saying the strikes was an act of aggression.

Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such attacks violated all the foundations of international law.

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron says news of the deaths of seven aid workers is "deeply distressing".

The aid workers were working in Gaza for charity World Central Kitchen.

The charity said earlier that one Briton was among the dead but Lord Cameron's statement talks about news of "British nationals" being killed in the attack.

"British nationals are reported to have been killed, we are urgently working to verify this information and will provide full support to their families," he said.

"These were people who were working to deliver life-saving aid to those who desperately need it. It is essential that humanitarian workers are protected and able to carry out their work.

"We have called on Israel to immediately investigate and provide a full, transparent explanation of what happened."

Al Shifa is no longer able to function as a hospital in any shape or form, the World Health Organisation has said.

Earlier today, Israel ended its two-week raid on Gaza's largest hospital, leaving it mostly gutted.

The WHO said the destruction amounted to "ripping the heart out" of the Palestinian health system.

WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris said: It was the place people go to for the kind of care that a really good health system provides, that we in all our societies expect to have, should we be in need."

Israel said it launched the raid because senior Hamas operatives had regrouped there and were planning attacks.

Some 200 militants were killed in the operation, the IDF said, although the claim that all of them were militants has not been independently confirmed. Palestinians found civilian bodies at the site, according to a report by the Associated Press.

Israel has commented on the strike that killed seven aid workers in Gaza earlier.

IDF spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari offered "deepest condolences" to the founder of the charity World Central Kitchen over the "tragic" deaths of its aid workers.

"We also express sincere sorrow to our allied nations who have been doing and continue to do so much to assist those in need," he added.

Mr Hagari insisted the IDF is "a professional military committed to international law", adding that the incident is being reviewed "at the highest levels to understand the circumstances of what happened and how it happened".

He praised World Central Kitchen as doing "critical work... on the frontlines of humanity", also noting the charity had been among the first to help Israelis after the massacre of 7 October.

"We will get to the bottom of this and we will share our findings transparently," he said.

An Israeli has told of the moment he was rescued after more than four months being held by Hamas.

Luis Har, 71, was taken hostage in Hamas's 7 October attack on southern Israel.

He and four relatives, including his partner's teenage niece who brought her dog, were grabbed at gunpoint from a house in Kibbutz Nir Yitzhak and taken to Gaza.

The three female hostages were released during the week-long November truce but Mr Har and his partner's 61-year-old brother were kept in Rafah until they were rescued in February.

He was woken by an explosion in the middle of the night on 12 February, and he sought cover, thinking the building was under attack.

There was gunfire and someone shouted his name, adding: "It's the IDF - we've come to take you home."

He the experience was surreal, telling Reuters: "On the way I even asked one of the soldiers - 'Tell me, are you sure we're not in a movie?'

"Because I wasn't sure. So much had happened. Is it real, is it not real?

"Even today, I don't know what is real and what is not."

He said he had passed his days in captivity by talking with his partner's brother about what they wanted to cook or where they would travel after their release.

Sometimes they were depressed and silent and that was when he imagined talking to and playing with his grandchildren, he said. And he would imagine being hugged by them.

"I felt it, on my body," he said. "And then the tears would start to flow."

He said he still wakes up in the night thinking of his experience, and noises can trigger memories.

"It's impossible to just forget about it, like 'now I'm in Israel and we're done' - no, it's inside."

Palestinians are expected to send a letter in the next few days with a request for full membership in the United Nations.

The news comes from UN Security Council president, Malta's UN ambassador Vanessa Frazier.

Ms Frazier, whose country took over the rotating president role this week, said the letter is likely to be discussed in a closed meeting after it is received.

Back in September 2011, Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas delivered the Palestinian Authority’s application to become the 194th member of the United Nations to then Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

That bid failed because it did not get the required support of nine of the security council's 15 members. Even if it had managed this, the US - Israel's closest ally and a veto power in the council - had vowed to veto any resolution backing Palestinian membership.

Poland's foreign affairs ministry has expressed "sincerest condolences" to the family of the Polish volunteer killed in what appears to have been an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

The volunteer, who has not yet been named, was working with World Central Kitchen to bring food to the people of Gaza, where so many have been pushed to the brink of famine.

Six other aid workers were killed in the strike, including a Briton and an Australian.

Poland's foreign affairs ministry said in its post: "Poland objects to the disregard for international humanitarian law and the protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers."

Former Foreign Office official Charlie Gammell has told Sky News that Israel's attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus could be an attempt to get the US back on side.

"There is something within Israel that says 'if we can expand this war, if we can peg this war to a broader conflict with Iran, that is going to get America back on our side'," he says.

But he adds: "Embassies are sovereign territory and the attack on a diplomatic premises in another country is tantamount to attacking another nation's soil."

Earlier this morning, we reported a British national was among seven aid workers killed by what appears to have been an Israeli airstrike in Gaza.

The British Foreign Office said just a few minutes ago: "We are aware of reports of the death of British national in Gaza and are urgently seeking further information."
