Authoritative guidance, training and insights on the business of health tourism
Medical tourism branding strategy, a national or regional medical tourism branding strategy is essential to distinguish your product from all the other destination offers..
Creating a National Destination Brand Identity for Health Tourism
Branding is not a difficult thing for individual stakeholders to do if they:
- know who they are
- know something about their competitors, and
- Know how they want to be perceived by others.
Throughout the world, more than 100 countries have announced medical tourism market entry intentions. Almost all of them have overlooked the crucial step of developing a well-developed national or regional medical tourism destination brand identity. Instead, they abdicated official tourism and market strategy for the nation or the region to individual stakeholders.
Individual stakeholders tend to focus their attention on individual products or services. After all, they have no legal authority to set destination branding and promotional policy, strategy, or standards. Since they cannot set the destination in motion, hospitals and doctors attempt to rush ahead to the stage of attempting to find customers and revenue. This leads to a cacophony of consumer messaging and fails to set the destination apart or create “ singularity ” – a branding term that means “to create in the mind of the medical tourism consumer, the perception that there is no other product in the market quite like your product. But it also acknowledges that no one brand has universal appeal.
What is branding?
Many get caught up with the word “brand” and believe it’s this technical term reserved for corporate powerhouses. The reality is that every health tourism destination and individual stakeholders at each destination —and in this day of social media, should establish what their brand equals.
Know What Your Brand Means
During this breakout session, participants will be guided by our health tourism branding expert using a whiteboard to start by identifying what the brand means to policy makers, stakeholders, and consumers.
Participants will contribute all the characteristics that describe what the national health tourism brand will be and how it is to be perceived. Once the list is complied, it should be fine-tuned and discussion will address how to ensure there is full command of the national brand in alignment with individual stakeholders’ brands in order to reach customers and referral sources.
Owning one “Word”
The adjectives and characteristics that make up your national and regional health tourism brand(s) should differentiate you from your competitors and provide a clear understanding of what your health tourism brand is not only capable of doing, but also what it is known for. It should also assist you in how you positively move consumers to favor your products and services.
If you want to build a brand, you must focus branding efforts on owning a word in the prospect’s mind. A word that nobody else owns. Unfortunately, conventional marketing of health tourism has been based on “selling” health services and room nights at spas and resorts when it should be based on branding.
Marketing is not selling. Marketing is not branding. Marketing is not public relations. And marketing is not advertising. Keep that in mind when you encounter laws and reglations that constrain or prohibit physician and hospital advertising.
As you build your brand awareness and in the mind of the consumer or referral source, you can build a powerful brand. Evidence from many medical tourism destinations and individual stakeholders supports the argument that without a powerful brand, all the advertising, sales promotion by health tourism facilitators and travel agents, web designs, and public relations or GNTO promotion won’t help you achieve your objectives .
Branding strategy should be developed first from a publicity point of view. The best way to generate publicity is to be first in something. It is highly likely that you can claim that your country was first to medical tourism. But it is likely that if we dig and peel away layers, your country or region is first in many other categories. The best way to make news is to announce a new category, not a new product. This can set your destination apart in a positive light, and generate enormous amounts of publicity to describe what is being done, how it is being developed, funded, how it will operate, and how your destination can lead some part of the medical tourism industry.
This distinction will attract others to come and study what your destination initiated and examine lessons learned. They will come to regard you for your innovation, systems , and for creating a position of leadership and developing national and regional business pride. As others come from afar to study this, their arrivals and room nights will also enhance local tourism turnover. Those involved in working with these visitors will also benefit from the Train the Trainer experience because it takes a deep level of understanding to be able to explain it to others. Training sessions and short courses to present case studies and teach skills and techniques can also create MICE revenues that will contribute to financial sustainability of the cluster.
Three Steps to Branding Success
If you are too closely tied to the project, consider inviting a medical tourism branding expert to do a brainstorming workshop with a small task force of public and private sector stakeholders. Elicit commentary and engage the participants in dialogue to build a strategy and implementation plan and budget allocation and timeline that will help to cover three primary workshop objectives:
- Understand the business niche you are in as a nation and how you differ from competitors.
- Dissect and analyze your target audience and referral sources to the core.
- Fully grasp how your product and services hit the sweet spot of your audience’s needs.
Creating Brand Ambassadors
To be successful, every stakeholder, politician, marketer, and employee working in health tourism sector or its subcategories must know what the brand stands for and are true to the brand in everything they do. How this will be executed at your destination is as much cultural as it is technical, because it involves working with people, companies and political agendas.
Often the owner and management of the brand (in this case the public sector) will know what the brand equals, but the people actually interacting with customers may not fully grasp the national brand and its intent or how to align their private sector strategy with it. It is important that everyone is reading from the same playbook and knows what the brand stands for and how to represent it properly. A consulting expert can draw out and elaborate ideas of how to best proceed to accomplish this through education, training, communications, setting brand standards, and managing information.
Most health tourism destinations do not know how to articulate the ways they differ from others. They are unsure how to craft an internationally worded message about the character of the brand. As a result, employees at the clinic and hospital level have brand confusion and questions. Instead of being sure when it comes to their brand interactions, they guess how they should represent the brand. With a solid message, you can outperform other health tourism competitor destinations. Your stakeholders and their employees will have a much deeper relationship with consumers and earn glowing accolades and testimonials.
Winning brands work continually with experienced, professional medical tourism branding experts to build a strategy and implementation plan and budget allocation. Beware the branding expert that wants to allocate budget to congress and event sponsorship without having a solid brand and product strategy in place first! Also ask for a reasonable timeline that will help you to:
- Fully capture what your national health tourism brand equals in an easily digestible format
- Elicit what it will take in training and development, time, and funding allocation to train stakeholders and their employees to embody the brand and what it equals.
- Have systems and protocols in place to aid employees in keeping the core of the brand top of mind.
- Using the cluster as a management services organization to put a system in operation to encourage stakeholder and employee support of the national health tourism brand message and reward them for acting in the national health tourism brand’s best interests .
If a consultant’s proposal even mentions conference sponsorships and stand rentals before your brand strategy and product are strong, you must question whether they are there to build your brand or sell exhibition space! Don’t let your ego and starry-eyed hope get in the way of practicalities. Even if you have a stand, what will you say to stand visitors if you don’t have a product to describe and significant medical tourism volume and outcomes at which to point?
Do go to the event and walk around. Visit other stands of the gullible. Ask questions. Talk to others. Don’t tie yourself down to the stand in the beginning. Go as a learning experience and observe. You may come away feeling as if you dodged an expensive, brutal bullet!
Communicate Your National Health Tourism Brand to the Public
The systems and protocols you associate with your national medical tourism brand will help reinforce the importance of of those who represent your brand. This is less about what they are saying to customers and more about how they are acting and embodying the brand.
Ask your consultant for guidance in planning and executing the steps it will take to know and live the brand as a nation. Get them to help you explain what your brand means to others. Communicating your brand positioning is not just about the adjectives you choose to support what the brand equals. It also involves the methods and manner in which you are communicating the brand to the general public and, more importantly, to your target consumers. You will succeed in marketing and promoting brand awareness of your national health tourism product when everyone involved knows how to communicate what your brand means and how to create the message that will resonate with foreigners.
A competent consultant with the experience and technical knowledge about what facilitators do and how they can help you can also guide you to:
- Devise the manner in which stakeholders and facilitators and marketers should interact with customers.
- Put together a check and balance system to ensure marketer- and employee-to-customer messaging stays on brand.
- Carefully consider the first and last impression you want to make when communicating the brand with the public.
- Identify phrases, ideas for copy and descriptions that hit the bull’s-eye when communicating with customers or clients in order to know what the brand stands for and also how to properly communicate in order to not cause brand confusion.
With the right expert, you can emerge from the workshop with a high-level checklist of points to touch on while engaging with customers, to stay in line with the brand and what it represents. You will bring back ideas that can be developed into tools that can be used for training for situational encounters. You will have a resource of planned responses to standardize the message or response when a customer makes a request or has a question. The resource can be shared with stakeholders to inform them how to give the appropriate answer or response. A competent and experienced medical tourism branding expert can also help you to develop and produce the guide and show you how to maintain it and give you an idea of the budget and time required for each part of the project. If they are really good, they will show you how to save money in the process, and will supply a short list of experienced experts to help you. Beware the ones who also sell the services. Ask if there are any commissions being paid by those vendors. If you are paying a consultant, they have a fiduciary duty to act as your advocate. Getting commissions for recommending those that pay them commissions is called agency ; not advocate . There’s a big difference…and you are ultimately the one paying those comissions in the price you pay for the services.
Get Target Customers to Amplify Your Brand
Finally, when your target consumers understand the nuances of your brand and can distinguish how your brand differs from the competition, you will achieve success and sustainability. This is harder to achieve because you lose a bit of control of the message through its interpretation by consumers; however, if you have solid techniques in place to keep the message on-brand, straying from what the brand equals will be minimized.
An experienced medical tourism public relations expert can help you to:
- Develop proposed guidelines to implement that can ensure all communications, individual or mass, are consistent and in line with brand positioning
- Determine who will have the authority to review all outside messaging and any brand associations
- Find ways to reward loyal customers and fans with ways to show your appreciation
- Development of a brand filter or a systematic questionnaire to ensure all communications and associations are consistent with the brand. This filter should include questions that help leadership and stakeholders determine whether or not the national health tourism brand is being properly communicated and represented.
If you communicate your national health tourism brand message with public relations best practices, your target audience and brand positioning will be easy to understand. Your stakeholders and their employees will also be great brand ambassadors, and your most avid consumers will be as well. When your consumers are fans of your brand and identify with it, they, too, will become vocal in spreading your brand’s message. Word of mouth marketing has always been a priority in extending a health tourism destination’s brand and offerings, but it is even more crucial in this age of social media. You want your consumers singing your praise across the various social media platforms, not only in the form of “Likes” but also in sharing their positive experiences and pictures. Their endorsement is more powerful than any commercial or copy you could produce.

Crafting the perfect content marketing strategy for medical tourism success.
The medical tourism industry has experienced significant growth over the past few years, driven by factors like high healthcare costs, long waiting times for treatments, and the increasing availability of quality healthcare services around the world. As a result, competition among medical tourism providers has intensified, making it more important than ever for businesses to find innovative ways to engage potential patients and stand out from the crowd.
Content marketing has emerged as a powerful tool for medical tourism providers to attract and engage patients. By creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content, you can attract a clearly defined audience, ultimately driving profitable customer action. In this comprehensive guide, we'll explore the essential elements of an effective content marketing strategy for medical tourism and discuss how you can leverage various digital channels to grow your business.
Understanding Your Target Audience
The foundation of any successful content marketing strategy lies in understanding your target audience. Conducting market research is crucial to identify the demographics, preferences, and needs of your potential patients. This will help you create tailored content that appeals to their unique requirements, ultimately driving engagement and conversions.
- Demographics : Consider factors like age, gender, income, and education levels of your target audience. Understanding the demographic profile of your potential patients will help you create content that resonates with them on a personal level.
- Geographic Location : Identify the regions and countries where your target audience resides. This will enable you to create content that addresses specific cultural nuances, healthcare regulations, and travel-related concerns relevant to those locations.
- Healthcare Needs : Analyze the most common healthcare procedures and treatments sought by medical tourists. By understanding their healthcare needs, you can create content that specifically addresses those concerns, positioning your business as a trusted solution provider.
- Travel Preferences : Medical tourists often combine their treatment with leisure activities. Understand their travel preferences, such as preferred destinations, accommodation types, and activities, to create content that caters to their interests beyond healthcare.
The Power of Storytelling
A compelling story can resonate with your audience on a deeper level, fostering an emotional connection with your brand. Share real-life patient testimonials, success stories, and the journey of your medical facility to create a sense of authenticity and trust. By showcasing the positive experiences of others, potential patients will be more likely to consider your services.
- Patient Testimonials : Sharing real-life patient testimonials is a powerful way to build trust and credibility with your audience. Reach out to your satisfied patients and ask them to share their experiences, including details about their treatment, recovery, and interactions with your staff. Include photos or videos to make these testimonials more engaging and authentic.
- Success Stories : Highlight the successful outcomes of your medical treatments and showcase how your facility has helped patients overcome their health challenges. Share these stories on your website, social media, and other marketing materials to demonstrate your expertise and commitment to patient care.
- Behind-the-Scenes Stories : Offer a glimpse into the day-to-day operations of your medical facility, showcasing your team's dedication to patient care. Share stories about your staff and their commitment to excellence, as well as any innovative technologies or procedures your facility employs. This will help potential patients feel more connected to your organization and confident in the quality of care they will receive.
- Educational Content : Position your facility as an expert in your field by creating educational content that addresses common concerns and questions your target audience might have. Use a variety of formats, such as blog posts, articles, infographics, and videos, to present this information in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner.
Leveraging Social Media
Social media platforms offer a wealth of opportunities for content marketing in the medical tourism industry. Use these channels to reach a wider audience, engage with potential patients, and share relevant content. Be sure to post consistently and interact with your audience to build a loyal following.
- Choosing the Right Platforms : Not all social media platforms are equally effective for content marketing in the medical tourism industry. Focus on platforms that are popular among your target audience and best suited for the type of content you want to share. For example, Facebook and Instagram are great for sharing visual content like photos and videos, while LinkedIn and Twitter are better suited for sharing articles and industry news.
- Creating Engaging Content : Post a mix of content on your social media channels, including educational articles, patient testimonials, success stories, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of your facility. Use eye-catching images and videos to make your content stand out and encourage users to share it with their networks.
- Interacting with Your Audience : Respond to comments and messages from your followers in a timely manner. Engage with your audience by asking questions, conducting polls, and encouraging them to share their own experiences. This will help you build a sense of community around your brand and foster stronger relationships with potential patients.
- Monitoring Your Performance : Track your social media engagement using analytics tools provided by each platform. Analyze key metrics like reach, engagement, and conversions to identify what type of content resonates most with your audience and optimize your strategy accordingly.
Email Campaigns: Personalized and Engaging
Email campaigns remain one of the most effective ways to connect with potential patients. Create personalized and engaging content that nurtures your leads and drives them toward conversion. Segment your mailing list based on factors like location, age, and medical needs to ensure your emails are targeted and relevant.
- Building Your Mailing List : Encourage website visitors to sign up for your mailing list by offering valuable content or incentives, such as a free eBook, newsletter, or access to exclusive promotions. Use opt-in forms on your website and social media channels to make it easy for users to subscribe.
- Segmenting Your List : Divide your mailing list into smaller segments based on factors like geographic location, demographic characteristics, and medical needs. This will help you create more targeted and relevant email campaigns that resonate with your audience and increase engagement.
- Crafting Compelling Content : Develop email content that is informative, engaging, and visually appealing. Share a mix of patient stories, educational resources, industry news, and promotional offers to keep your audience interested and engaged. Use personalized subject lines and dynamic content to make your emails feel more tailored to each recipient.
- Optimizing for Deliverability : Ensure your emails reach your audience by adhering to best practices for email deliverability. Use a reputable email service provider, authenticate your emails, and maintain a clean mailing list to increase the likelihood of your messages landing in your subscribers' inboxes.
Building a Strong Online Presence
A well-designed, informative website is essential for success in the medical tourism industry. Ensure your site is easy to navigate, visually appealing, and optimized for search engines. Offer valuable resources like blog posts, eBooks, and videos to showcase your expertise and establish trust with potential patients.
- User-Friendly Design : Your website should be visually appealing and easy to navigate. Use clear headings, concise text, and a logical layout to help users find the information they're looking for quickly and easily. Make sure your website is mobile-responsive, as many users will access it from their smartphones or tablets.
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO) : Optimize your website for search engines to increase its visibility and attract more organic traffic. Conduct keyword research to identify the most relevant terms your target audience is searching for and incorporate them into your website's content, meta tags, and URL structure. Additionally, focus on building high-quality backlinks and creating a strong internal linking structure to improve your website's search engine ranking.
- Valuable Content : Offer a variety of valuable resources on your website to showcase your expertise and build trust with potential patients. Create informative blog posts, eBooks, and videos that address common questions and concerns related to medical tourism. Regularly update your content to keep it fresh and relevant.
- Conversion Optimization : Design your website with conversions in mind. Use clear calls-to-action (CTAs) and make it easy for users to take the desired action, whether that's requesting a consultation, signing up for your newsletter, or downloading an eBook. Track your conversion rates and optimize your website elements to improve performance.
Analyzing and Adapting
Continually analyze the performance of your content marketing efforts to identify areas for improvement. Utilize tools like Google Analytics to track user behavior, conversions, and overall engagement. Use this data to refine your strategy and make data-driven decisions for future campaigns.
- Tracking Key Metrics : Monitor important metrics like website traffic, bounce rate, time on site, and conversion rates to assess the effectiveness of your content marketing efforts. Analyze these metrics for trends and patterns that can inform your future strategy.
- A/B Testing : Experiment with different content types, headlines, CTAs, and other website elements to see what resonates most with your audience. Use A/B testing tools to compare different versions of a webpage or email campaign and determine which performs best.
- Listening to Feedback : Encourage your audience to provide feedback on your content and use this information to make improvements. Address any concerns or issues raised by your audience to demonstrate your commitment to providing the best possible experience for your patients.
- Adapting Your Strategy : Use the insights gained from analyzing your content marketing efforts to adapt your strategy and improve its effectiveness. Continually refine your approach, test new ideas, and stay informed about industry trends to keep your content marketing strategy fresh and relevant.

Why Patients Are Turning to Medical Tourism
Statistics, Benefits, and Risks
Planning Ahead
Frequently asked questions.
Medical tourism is a term that refers to traveling to another country to get a medical or dental procedure. In some instances, medical tourists travel abroad seeking alternative treatments that are not approved in the United States.
Medical tourism is successful for millions of people each year, and it is on the rise for a variety of reasons, including increasing healthcare costs in the United States, lack of health insurance, specialist-driven procedures, high-quality facilities, and the opportunity to travel before or after a medical procedure.
According to a New York Times article from January 2021, pent-up demand for nonessential surgeries, as well as the fact that many Americans lost their health insurance during the coronavirus pandemic led to a surge in medical tourism once other countries re-opened.
However, there are specific risks that come with traveling overseas for surgery. If you're thinking of pursuing a medical procedure in another country, here's what to know about the benefits and the risks.
Medical Tourism Benefits
The most common procedures Americans go abroad for include dental care, cosmetic procedures , fertility treatments, organ transplants , and cancer treatment.
This is not to be confused with having an unplanned procedure in a foreign country due to an unexpected illness or injury.
Among the reasons a person might choose to go abroad for a medical procedure are:
Lower Costs
Medical tourists can save anywhere from 25% to 90% in medical bills, depending on the procedure they get and the country they travel to. There are several factors that play into this:
- The cost of diagnostic testing and medications is particularly expensive in the United States.
- The cost of pre- and post-procedure labor is often dramatically lower overseas. This includes labor costs for nurses , aides, surgeons , pharmacists, physical therapists , and more.
- High cost of malpractice insurance—the insurance that protects medical professionals against lawsuits—in the United States.
- Hospital stays cost far less in many overseas countries compared to the United States. In other words, quality care, hospital meals, and rehabilitation are far more affordable abroad for many people.
For someone who doesn't have insurance , or someone having a procedure that is not covered by insurance , the difference can be enormous.
Popular Countries for Medical Tourism
Dominican Republic
South Korea
Culture and Language
Many immigrants prefer to have treatments and procedures done in their country of origin—a sensible decision, considering just how much language barriers alone can affect the quality of their care.
Furthermore, at least 25% of immigrants and noncitizen residents in the United States are uninsured, compared to 9% of American citizens. Children with at least one noncitizen parent are also more likely to be uninsured.
Practicalities aside, many people choose to have their procedure done in their country of origin simply because it allows them to be close to family, friends, and caretakers who can assist them through their recovery .
Insurance Incentives
Some insurance companies have started promoting medical tourism. The reason behind this is simple: savings for the insured means savings for the insurance provider and vice versa.
Several insurance providers, including Aetna have programs specifically geared at promoting safe medical tourism. Some insurance providers even offer financial incentives for medical tourism, like discounts on medical bills .
That said, many insurance companies will not pay for surgery performed outside of the country unless it is an emergency.
Luxury and Privacy
Medical tourism is a lucrative business for many countries, and much of the money brought in by medical tourists is reinvested into the local economy and health infrastructure.
The effect of this is apparent in the spa-like luxury that some foreign hospitals offer, providing medical tourists the opportunity to be pampered during their stay for a fraction of the cost they would pay at home.
Some facilities offer hospital rooms that are more like a hotel suite than a traditional hospital room. Other hospitals offer one-on-one private nursing care, which is far more generous and attentive than the staffing ratios that most hospitals allow.
Medical tourists who seek that added layer of privacy can find it abroad. Many can return home from their "vacation" without anyone knowing they had a procedure at all.
Vacation in a Foreign Country
Medical tourists often take advantage of their stay in a foreign country to travel for pleasure by scheduling a vacation before or after their procedure.
This is an especially inexpensive way to travel to a foreign country, especially if their insurance provider is paying for the flight and the cost of staying is low.
While it seems logical to recover on a beach or in a chalet by the mountains, keep in mind that it's important not to jeopardize your recovery.
Swimming isn't recommended until your incisions are completely closed. You may not feel up to doing much more than napping in the days following your procedure, either.
Don't let your vacation disrupt your recovery. Any time you have a procedure done, especially a surgery, it's important to listen to your body, take your medications as directed, and follow your doctor's recommendations closely.
Bypassing Rules and Regulations
Some travelers seek surgery abroad to bypass rules that are set in place by their own government, insurance company , or hospital. These rules are typically in place to protect the patient from harm, so getting around them isn't always the best idea.
For example, a patient may be told that their weight is too low to qualify for weight loss surgery . A surgeon in a foreign country may have a different standard for who qualifies for weight loss surgery, so the patient may qualify overseas for the procedure they want.
Talented Surgeons
Surgeons in certain countries are known for their talent in a specific area of surgery. For example, Brazilian surgeons are often touted for their strong plastic surgery skills .
Whereas in the United States, insurance companies might only cover cosmetic procedures if it is medically necessary, cosmetic surgery is often free or low-cost in Brazil's public hospitals—giving cosmetic surgeons there ample practice.
Thailand is reported to be the primary medical tourism destination for individuals seeking gender reassignment . It is often easier to qualify for surgery and the cost is significantly reduced. Surgeons are performing the procedures frequently, and as a result, many have become quite specialized in them.
It is often surprising to many medical tourists that their physician was trained in the United States. Not all physicians are, of course, but a surprisingly high percentage of them working in surgery abroad are trained in English-speaking medical schools and residency programs and then return to their home country. These physicians often speak multiple languages and may be board certified in their home country and a foreign country, such as the United States.
Medical tourism isn’t limited to countries outside of the United States, either. Many people travel to the United States for medical care due to the country's cutting-edge technology, prescription medication supply, and the general safety of healthcare.
Medical Tourism Risks
The financial and practical benefits of medical tourism are well known, and you may even know someone who had a great experience. Nonetheless, the downsides of medical tourism can be just as great if not greater. Sometimes, they can even be deadly.
If you are considering a trip abroad for your procedure, you should know that medical tourism isn't entirely without obstacle and risks. These include:
Poorly Trained Surgeons
In any country—the United States included—there will be good surgeons and bad. And just as there are great surgeons abroad, there are also some surgeons who are less talented, less trained, and less experienced.
Regardless of what procedure you are getting or where, you should always do some preliminary research into the surgeon or physician who will be treating you as well as the hospital you will be treated at.
In the United States, it is fairly easy to obtain information about malpractice lawsuits , sanctions by medical boards, and other disciplinary actions against a physician.
Performing this research from afar can be challenging, especially if you don't speak the local language. Yet countless people take the risk anyway, without knowing whether the physicians who will treat them are reputable.
A physician should be trained in the specific area of medicine that is appropriate for your procedure. For example, you should not be having plastic surgery from a surgeon who was trained to be a heart doctor. It isn’t good enough to be a physician, the physician must be trained in the specialty .
Prior to agreeing to surgery, you should also know your surgeon’s credentials : where they studied, where they trained, and in what specialty(s) they are board-certified. Do not rely on testimonials from previous patients; these are easily made up for a website and even if they are correct, one good surgery doesn’t mean they will all be successful.
Quality of Staff
Nurses are a very important part of healthcare, and the care they provide can mean the difference between a great outcome and a terrible one.
A well-trained nurse can identify a potential problem and fix it before it truly becomes an issue. A poorly trained nurse may not identify a problem until it is too late. The quality of the nursing staff will have a direct impact on your care.
Once again, it's important to research the hospital staff where you will be having your procedure done. Read the reviews but don't trust them blindly. If you can, seek out a recommendation from someone who can vouch for the medical staff where you will be going.
Quality of the Facility
While researching healthcare facilities for your procedure, you want to learn not just about the quality of the facilities themselves, but about the country's healthcare system as a whole.
In some countries, there is a marked distinction between public hospitals and private hospitals. In Turkey, for example, private hospitals are considered on-par with hospitals in the states, while many locals will advise you to steer clear of public hospitals if you can.
You will also want to seek out facilities that are internationally accredited. In the United States, the Joint Commission evaluates hospitals and certifies those that provide safe, quality care. The international division does the same for hospitals outside the United States.
Once you have a few options for potential facilities, you can start to investigate specifics. For one, you should find as many pictures and reviews of the facility as you can. Ask yourself whether the facility is state of the art or whether it seems dirty and outdated.
You will also need to find out if the facility has ICU level care available, in case something goes wrong. If not, there should be a major hospital nearby so that you can be transferred quickly.
To learn more about a healthcare facility, consider joining expat groups on social media for the city or country you will be traveling to. Ask the group for recommendations, or inquire about any positive or negative experiences they may have had at a particular facility.
Flying Home After Surgery
Any surgery comes with risks, including infection and blood clots . Flying home increases the risk of blood clots, especially on long-haul flights that are longer than four hours.
Try to avoid flying home in the days immediately after surgery; waiting a week will decrease the chances of developing a blood clot or another serious complication during the flight.
For longer flights, plan on getting up and walking up and down the aisles each hour to improve blood flow in your legs. You might also benefit from wearing compression socks with your doctor's approval.
If you are taking blood thinners or are at-risk of blood clots , be sure to talk to your doctor about how you can reduce your risk of blood clots after your procedure and while traveling.
Furthermore, you should know the symptoms of blood clots and stay alert.
Unplanned Illness
Any time you travel abroad, you run the risk of catching an illness that you have never been exposed to or that your body is not prepared to fight off. This is especially a concern when spending time in a foreign hospital.
If you have a sensitive stomach, you may also want to think long and hard about having surgery abroad. The food is often very different in foreign hospitals, and in some areas, there is a risk that even the water will be upsetting to your body.
Having diarrhea or postoperative nausea and vomiting makes for a miserable recovery experience, especially if you do not have a friend or family member nearby who can help you through it.
Before you travel abroad, check with your doctor to see if you need any vaccines to travel to your destination or if there are any foreign illnesses you should be aware of. Picking up an illness abroad, particularly after your surgery, can potentially be life-threatening.
Language Barriers
If you are having surgery in a country where English is not the primary language, you will need to make preparations in order to be able to communicate with the staff.
You may be pleasantly surprised to learn that the staff speaks your primary language well. If not, then you will need to consider how you will make your wishes and needs known to the surgeon, the staff, and others you will meet.
Whether you are at home or abroad, remember to speak up and advocate for yourself to make sure your needs are met. If you don't speak the local language, download a language translation app on your smartphone and don't hesitate to use it to communicate your needs. Hiring a translator is another option.
A Word About Transplant Tourism
Transplant tourism is one area of medical tourism that is strongly discouraged by organ and tissue transplant professionals in multiple countries. Most international transplants are considered “black market” surgeries that are not only poor in quality, but ethically and morally wrong.
China, for example, the country that is believed to perform more international kidney transplants than any other country, is widely believed to take organs from political prisoners after their execution.
In India, living donors are often promised large sums of money for their kidney donation, only to find out they have been scammed and never receive payment. Selling an organ in India is illegal, as it is in most areas of the world, so there is little recourse for the donor.
Then there is the final outcome: how well the organ works after the surgery is complete. With black market transplants, less care is often taken with matching the donor and recipient, which leads to high levels of rejection and a greater risk of death. Furthermore, the new organ may not have been screened for diseases such as cytomegalovirus , tuberculosis , hepatitis B , and hepatitis C . It is often the new disease that leads to death, rather than the organ rejection itself.
Finally, transplant surgeons are often reluctant to care for a patient who intentionally circumvented the donor process in the United States and received their transplant from an unknown physician.
It is important to arrange your follow-up care prior to leaving your home country.
Many physicians and surgeons are hesitant to take care of a patient who received care outside the country, as they are often unfamiliar with medical tourism and have concerns about the quality of care overseas.
Arranging for follow-up care before you leave will make it easier to transition to care at home without the stress of trying to find a physician after surgery .
Just be sure to inform your follow-up care physician where you are having your procedure done. After you return, they will also want to know what prescription medications you were given, if any.
What are popular countries for medical tourism?
Mexico, India, Costa Rica, Turkey, Singapore, Canada, and Thailand are among the many countries that are popular for medical tourism.
How safe is medical tourism?
Medical tourism is generally considered safe, but it's critical to research the quality of care, physician training, and surgical specialties of each country. There are several medical tourism organizations that specialize in evaluating popular destinations for this purpose.
What countries have free healthcare?
Countries with free healthcare include England, Canada, Thailand, Mexico, India, Sweden, South Korea, Israel, and many others.
A Word From Verywell
If you are considering medical tourism, discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor, and consider working with your insurance provider to arrange a trip that balances financial savings with safety. (Also, before you embark on a trip overseas for your procedure, make sure you are financially prepared for unexpected events and emergencies. Don't go abroad if you don't have enough money to get yourself home in a crisis.)
A medical tourism organization such as Patients Without Borders can help you evaluate the quality and trustworthiness of healthcare in various countries. Making sure a high level of care is readily available will lead to a safer, more relaxing experience.

Medical Tourism
A comprehensive guide to selecting a trustworthy medical tourism company.
Medical tourism has become an increasingly popular choice for individuals seeking affordable and high-quality medical treatments abroad. However, the success and safety of your medical journey greatly depend on the medical tourism company you choose to work with. Selecting a reputable and trustworthy company is crucial for a smooth and satisfactory experience. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore essential tips to help you find a reliable medical tourism company.
Understand the Importance of Accreditation
In the realm of medical tourism, accreditation serves as a vital indicator of a company's commitment to quality and patient safety. Look for internationally recognized accreditations such as JCI (Joint Commission International) or ISO (International Organization for Standardization). These certifications ensure that the medical tourism company adheres to rigorous standards, protocols, and best practices.
Verify Certification of Medical Travel Professionals
Certified Medical Travel Professionals (CMTPs) play a crucial role in guiding patients throughout their medical travel journey. The Certified Medical Travel Professional program is a recognized certification that demonstrates a professional's expertise in the field. Ensure that the medical tourism company employs CMTPs who possess the necessary knowledge and skills to provide comprehensive assistance and support.
Assess the Range of Services Offered
A reputable medical tourism company should offer a wide range of services to cater to diverse patient needs. Evaluate whether the company provides comprehensive assistance, including pre-travel consultations, treatment planning, travel arrangements, accommodation, and post-treatment follow-up. A holistic approach ensures a seamless and stress-free experience for patients.
Scrutinize Patient Reviews and Testimonials
Patient reviews and testimonials provide valuable insights into the experiences of previous medical travelers. Check reputable online platforms and forums to gauge the overall satisfaction level of patients who have used the services of the medical tourism company you are considering. Pay attention to reviews that address factors such as quality of care, communication, and overall support.
Evaluate Transparency and Communication
Transparent communication is vital when dealing with a medical tourism company. Assess whether the company provides clear and detailed information regarding treatment options, costs, potential risks, and expected outcomes. A reliable company will address all your concerns, provide transparent pricing, and maintain open channels of communication throughout your medical journey.
Consider Destination Expertise
A reputable medical tourism company should have in-depth knowledge and experience in the chosen destination. They should be well-versed in local regulations, medical facilities, and healthcare providers. Ensure that the company has established partnerships with renowned hospitals and clinics, offering a wide range of specialties to meet your specific medical needs.
Seek Recommendations from Trustworthy Sources
Consulting trustworthy sources such as healthcare professionals, friends, or family members who have had successful medical travel experiences can be invaluable. They can provide insights, recommendations, and firsthand accounts of their journeys, helping you make an informed decision when choosing a medical tourism company.
In conclusion, Choosing a reputable medical tourism company is paramount to the success and safety of your medical travel experience. By assessing factors such as accreditation, certifications, patient reviews, transparency, destination expertise, and seeking recommendations, you can make an informed decision. Remember to prioritize quality, patient safety, and comprehensive support throughout your medical journey. With careful consideration and research, you can find a trustworthy medical tourism company that meets your needs and ensures a positive and successful medical travel experience.

It is recommended that consumers do not share their personal and confidential information on random medical tourism platforms as they may not be secure. Consumers must be cautious when disclosing their private information as some organizations may not protect their privacy and could misuse their information. Additionally, there are agencies that may prioritize their commissions over the well-being of the patients. Consumers should avoid choosing the cheapest price and instead make a thorough comparison across multiple facilitators to make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Your particular lifestyle, the medical tourism destination, and the type of medical tourism procedure you will be undergoing will dictate, to a large degree, how much money you will be spending. In general, the farther away your medical tourism destination the more you will pay for airfare. So, for example, expect to pay more if you are flying from Dallas to Bangkok, Thailand, than you would for a flight to Monterey, Mexico. At the same time, you also need to take into account that some medical tourism destinations are more expensive than others. So even if a particular country is cheaper to travel to, you will need to factor in the relative cost of “living,” in comparison to another medical tourism destination.
What about your lifestyle preferences? Do you plan to stay at a five-star hotel or are you comfortable “roughing” it at a local bed and breakfast? Some adventurous souls prefer to immerse themselves in the local culture and will literally live on a shoestring budget. Most everyone else though will tend to fall somewhere between the Holiday Inn and Club Med. The type of medical tourism procedure or medical tourism treatment you are undergoing will also play a large part in your decision of where to stay and what you will do. A medical tourism patient undergoing open heart surgery or a knee replacement will require extra care and very comfortable conditions after leaving the hospital. Not the case for someone coming for a dental bridge or an eyelid lift. Wherever you decide to stay, make sure it serves your needs as a medical tourism patient.
Many of the expenses of a medical tourism trip will be the same as those of a “normal” trip or vacation. At the very minimum you will need to budget for airfare, hotel accommodations, transportation requirements and meals. Sightseeing tours and souvenirs are also a real possibility, particularly if you are traveling with a companion.
Although there are many benefits associated with medical tourism, there are also certain risks that must be weighed before making a final decision to travel abroad.
Varying standards and Medical Tourism
Varying standards with regards to hospitals and physicians can be a problem if you are searching for options within multiple countries with dozens of hospitals. Each country will have its own licensing and certification protocols which may vary significantly from your own country. As you have no way of actually visiting the hospital or meeting the physician prior to your trip, you will have to do research to make sure hospitals are accredited and surgeons are licensed. MedicalTourism.com offers a wealth of information and tools that will make this job much easier.
Travel after surgery
Traveling long distances after surgery also poses certain risks such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. DVT may be defined as a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. If the blood clot breaks off and travels through the blood stream to the lungs, a pulmonary embolism may occur which is potentially fatal. Using simple preventive measures, however, medical tourism patients can reduce the chance of blood clotting and increase their likelihood of surgical success.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends:
• Getting up and walking around every 2 to 3 hours.
• Exercise your legs while you’re sitting
• Drink plenty of water, and avoid drinking anything with alcohol or caffeine in it.
Additionally, medical compression stockings and anti-clotting medications such as Warfarin and Heparin, may be prescribed by physicians for high risk medical tourism patients.
Minimal legal recourse in case something goes wrong
It is important to remember that if you do have a serious complication, other countries' malpractice and liability recourses may be different from those in your own country. Also keep in mind that some hospitals may require a medical tourism patient to sign a legal waiver stating that if they do file a lawsuit over the surgery, the lawsuit must be adjudicated in the country where the medical procedure was performed.
Coordinating appropriate aftercare once you come home
This is one the biggest concerns for medical tourism patients considering traveling abroad for surgery. What happens if I have a complication once I return home? Who will I turn to? Will my doctor even see me? These are valid questions that must be addressed by the hospital you are seeking care at.
Make sure to inform your primary physician that you will be going overseas and try to get him or her involved in the process. You may also want to try and schedule a call between your primary physician and your international doctor to discuss your case. This is wise not only at a medical level (you want your international physician to know as much as possible about your case history), but also has the potential to establish trust between both parties, making your physician empathetic toward your situation and wanting to be an active participant in the success of your procedure.
Presently, and in order to minimize potential complications, many international hospitals and physicians do maintain close contact with their medical tourism patients once they have returned home. Therefore, you should not feel shy about contacting them if you feel something is wrong. At the very least your overseas physician can offer recommendations about what medications to take, who to see, or possibly even explain details of your condition to another doctor.
In medical tourism, a Familiarization Tour or Fam Trip is a trip organized by a public or private entity seeking to showcase the healthcare and tourism assets in a certain region, country or city, in order to attract new business (usually in the form of patients). Fam trips are often organized by the tourism board, medical tourism cluster, or by a Destination Management Organization (DMO) representing a destination. Participants in the Fam trip are typically buyers of medical tourism services such as foreign governments, insurance companies, employers and medical tourism facilitators. They are vetted in advance and usually have all their travel, accommodation and maintenance fees covered during the trip.
Sometimes referred to as medical tourism agencies, or a medical travel facilitator, these are companies that, as their name suggests, act as facilitators or intermediaries for patients seeking treatments in other countries or regions.
Medical Tourism Facilitators have played an important role in promoting the growth of medical tourism, and for many medical tourism patients, represent their first face to face contact with the concept of medical tourism.
Over the last 10-15 years, thousands of these companies have popped up, most sporting names synonymous with health and travel. They function much like a travel agency, requesting and obtaining passports, booking flights, and arranging a medical tourism patient’s lodging, transportation and tours. The key difference, of course, is that they also serve as the liaison or mediator between you and the international hospital and doctor. In effect, it is the facilitator’s job to repackage the medical provider’s service offering, make it more appealing, and then guide you along the medical tourism process.

The Rise of Medical Tourism: Exploring the Global Phenomenon and Its Implications
Aug 29, 2023
This is a Guest Post by Mr.Danish Ahmed, CEO & Founder at Healthtrip
In recent years, India has emerged as a shining star in the field of medical tourism, attracting 2 million international patients seeking high-quality, affordable, and accessible treatment to life threatening diseases. The nation’s transformation into the 2 nd largest medical tourism hub in Asia, has been nothing short of extraordinary, with world-class medical facilities, skilled healthcare professionals, reducing cost of treatments and a plethora of cultural attractions making India an enticing destination for medical travelers.
India’s reputation as a healing destination stretches back centuries, steeped in the wisdom of ancient healing traditions that have stood the test of time. Ayurveda, often referred to as the “science of life,” is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems, originating in India over 5,000 years ago. Yoga, another gift from India to the world, complements Ayurveda by promoting physical, mental, and spiritual harmony. The combination of Ayurveda and yoga creates a powerful synergy, attracting wellness seekers from all corners of the globe.
These traditional healing modalities have coexisted harmoniously with modern medicine, providing patients with a diverse array of treatment options and further cementing India’s position as a holistic healthcare destination.
As modern medical tourism takes center stage, India’s profound ancient healing heritage continues to play a vital role. Medical tourists from across the world often seek solace in these traditional practices alongside contemporary medical treatments, recognizing the added dimension of healing that they bring. This seamless integration of the ancient and the modern makes India a healing destination like no other, where the quest for health transcends the confines of time and invites travelers to embark on a profound journey of self-discovery and well-being.
The Indian Advantage: Quality Healthcare at an Affordable Cost
One of the primary reasons behind India’s ascendancy as a medical tourism hub is its ability to offer top-notch healthcare services at a fraction of the cost compared to many developed countries. Procedures ranging from cardiac surgeries, organ transplants, orthopedic treatments, and cosmetic surgeries to fertility treatments and advanced cancer therapies are available at 60-80% lower costs without compromising on quality.
India has invested heavily in its healthcare infrastructure, establishing world-class hospitals and medical centers equipped with state-of-the-art technology and facilities that are not available across Asia, Africa and sometimes, even Europe. Many Indian hospitals boast international JCI accreditations and partnerships with renowned medical institutions around the world, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care and treatment.
India’s ascent as a medical tourism hub has been further fortified by the world-class talent nurtured within its hundreds of medical colleges. Decades of investment in medical education have culminated in a robust ecosystem that produces an impressive number of doctors each year – over 100,000 to be precise. These institutions have become breeding grounds for excellence, churning out highly skilled medical professionals who are well-equipped to tackle the most complex healthcare challenges. The rigorous training, coupled with high volume hands-on experience in state-of-the-art hospitals, empowers these doctors with the confidence and expertise to deliver exceptional patient care.
Health with care, through specialized Medical Travel companies.
Specialized medical tourism companies play a pivotal role in ensuring a seamless and secure experience for international patients. These companies act as trusted intermediaries, offering a comprehensive range of services that go beyond mere facilitation. They serve as the bridge between medical travelers and the vast network of world-class hospitals, helping patients find the most suitable and high-quality healthcare facilities for their specific needs. Recognizing the critical role of these facilitation companies, the Indian Government has also created a special accreditation for such companies under the National Accreditation Board of Hospitals and healthcare providers (NABH).
Apart from hospital selection, these companies provide a host of conveniences that make the entire medical journey hassle-free. From arranging accommodations and transportation to offering translation services for non-English-speaking patients, these companies ensure that patients can focus solely on their health and recovery without the burden of logistical challenges in a foreign country.
Equally critical is the role these companies play in safeguarding medical tourists from unethical practices in healthcare. They work diligently to maintain a robust quality assurance process, vetting hospitals and ensuring cost of treatments are not inflated by hospitals. This level of due diligence not only safeguards patients from potential malpractices but also establishes a sense of trust and reliability, making medical tourism a viable and credible option for those seeking medical treatment abroad.
Moreover, medical tourism companies often have dedicated patient coordinators who serve as personal concierges, guiding patients throughout their medical journey, answering queries, and providing support at every step. This personalized care fosters a sense of comfort and reassurance for patients, who may be far away from their home and loved ones during a vulnerable time.
Government Support and Visa Facilitation
The Indian government, led by Hon’Ble Prime Minister Modi’s vision, has been proactive in promoting medical tourism and has introduced policies to facilitate the process for international patients. Post covid, the Ministry of Health, under the guidance of India’s dynamic health minister, Dr.Mansukh Madaviya, has taken ground breaking initiatives to increase medical tourism, which has resulted in the industry quickly surpassing pre-covid numbers within just 18 months. Ease of visa, Accreditation of hospitals and Medical Travel companies, launch of various events, focus on transparency, addressal of grievances and other initiatives have significantly propelled the industry towards a phase of hypergrowth, which can potentially double India’s medical tourism industry from $6 billion currently, to $25 billion by 2025.
India’s remarkable journey from a nation known for its cultural heritage to a global medical tourism hub has been awe-inspiring. The convergence of high-quality healthcare services, skilled medical professionals, advanced infrastructure, affordability, and a rich cultural experience has set India apart as a medical destination of choice. As the CEO of India’s largest medical travel company and the Vice President of METRA, the industry’s largest association, I am proud to witness and be part of this transformative era, where India’s emergence as a medical tourism hub brings hope, healing, and happiness to countless lives worldwide.
In a world seeking accessible and effective healthcare solutions, India’s rise as a medical tourism hub offers a beacon of light, pointing towards a brighter and healthier future for all, cementing the Prime Ministers vision of One World, One Family, One Health.

Top 15 Traveler-Friendly Facilities
By Melissa Wirkus, associate editor
For the third year in a row, TravelNursing.com delivers its annual report on the Top Traveler-Friendly Facilities--with one change. This year, there were too many top-rated facilities to ignore, so we’ve expanded the list to the “Top 15” in order to honor the quality and care these facilities deliver to their nurses and patients.
The list below takes a look at the highest-rated facilities based on over 3,400 evaluations by travel nurses on assignment in 2009-2010,* who considered factors like staff friendliness, nurse managers, orientation programs, patient safety, learning new skills and RN staffing levels. The report explores the characteristics that make a facility attractive to travel nurses and showcases the range of opportunities available to them. From the variety of locations to the diverse specialties and practice settings represented here, the traveler-friendly facilities list gives nurses 15 more reasons to take their career on the road.
Here are the top 15 hospitals as rated by survey respondents:
Ketchikan General Hospital - Ketchikan, AK
For the second year in a row, Ketchikan General Hospital reigns as the top traveler-friendly facility among travel nurses. Earning top ratings in the staff friendliness, nurse manager and learning new skills categories, this small, close-knit facility remains a place where travel nurses can go to experience the beauty of the Alaskan wilderness while immersing themselves in a top-notch clinical environment.
Travelers also unanimously responded that they would recommend the facility to other nurses and the majority said they would work at the facility again.
Jean McHenry, RN, accepted an assignment at Ketchikan with leading travel nurse staffing company American MobileHealthcare. Working in their labor and delivery unit, O’Brien was impressed by the facility’s welcoming staff and her living conditions in Alaska. “My recruiter was wonderful and the accommodations were excellent,” she commented. “The staff has been very accommodating.”
Seattle Children's Hospital - Seattle, WA
One of two children’s hospitals to be featured in this year’s ranking of the most traveler-friendly facilities, Seattle Children’s has been featured regularly among the nation’s best pediatric facilities by U.S. News & World Report magazine. They also achieved Magnet status in 2008, awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for nursing excellence. Travel nurses gave the facility high marks in the following categories: staff friendliness, orientation, patient safety, learning new skills and RN staffing levels. Travelers also unanimously reported that they would recommend Seattle Children’s to other nurses.
Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, WI
Consistently ranking among the best children’s hospitals in the nation, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin provides an excellent learning experience for travel nurses across all children’s specialties.
Travel nurses ranked the facility’s nurse staffing levels and teaching capabilities very favorably--which is further shown through the awards and special recognition the hospital has received throughout the years. Travel nurses on assignment here will find plenty of opportunity to expand their clinical skill set and experience levels.
Scripps Green Hospital - San Diego, CA
Located in the gorgeous seaside community of La Jolla, in San Diego, California, the location of Scripps Green is just one of the many reasons this hospital ranks highly among travel nurses. Another reason for the hospital’s favorable ranking was the friendliness of staff--which was a category in which travelers gave the facility exceptionally high marks.
The 173-bed facility was also recently named among the top hospitals for heart care in the nation by U.S. News and World Report magazine and has even earned the distinction of being the first facility in San Diego County to implement a liver transplant program. Scripps Green’s friendly staff, excellent patient care and innovative programs make it easy to see why travel nurses enjoy assignments here.
FMS Museum District #2 Dialysis Clinic - Houston, TX
This outpatient dialysis center located in Houston, Texas, is part of the Fresenius Medical Care family and provides a variety of dialysis services for patients throughout the metro area.
For travelers looking for a change from the traditional hospital setting, an assignment in an outpatient dialysis clinic can provide a fresh outlook to a nursing career. Travelers rated the clinic especially favorably in the staff friendliness, patient safety and nurse staffing levels categories and the majority of respondents said they would recommend the facility and would work at it again.
St. Anthony Central Hospital - Denver, CO
One of Colorado’s oldest hospitals, St. Anthony Central Hospital continues to blend its “pioneering spirit” of the past with the latest innovations in today’s medicine. This level 1 trauma center located in Denver is a facility that travel nurses said they would work at again, due to the high ratings received in the staff friendliness and nurse manager categories.
Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center - Los Angeles, CA
The Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center is a unique facility that provides an innovative approach to cancer care while also serving as the outpatient facility for the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. The facility is one of the few on the list that received high marks from travelers in almost every category--including excellent reviews in staff friendliness, nurse managers, orientation, patient safety, the ability to learn new skills and RN staffing levels.
Providing a wide-range of comprehensive care services including diagnostics, cancer prevention and hospice to over 90,000 patients, travel nurses on assignment here have the ability to work with a world-renowned team of cancer specialists while making a difference in the lives of those they care for.
Indian Health Services PHS Crow Agency/Crow-Northern Cheyenne Hospital - Crow Agency, MT Accredited by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Crow Service Unit is a 24-bed health facility serving the people of the Crow and Northern Cheyenne nations. Nestled in the valley of the Little Big Horn in Crow Agency, Montana, this full-service hospital provides preventive health services, dialysis, family planning, nursing home care, surgery and much more.
The hospital’s vision statement is “We believe a ‘Healthy Population’ exists through a creative and innovative health care system driven by the health care needs established cooperatively with those we serve,” and is demonstrated through the nurses’ high marks in the overall facility experience, orientation and RN staffing levels categories. For nurses looking to work in smaller, rural settings, taking an assignment with the Indian Health Services could be the perfect match.
VA Palo Alto Health Care System - Palo Alto, CA
Offering a full range of primary health care services in addition to specialty care including neurology and nuclear medicine, the VA Palo Alto Health Care System provides the veteran community of the San Francisco Bay Area with quality patient care.
The system is composed of three inpatient facilities and seven outpatient facilities throughout the Bay Area, offering travel nurses a variety of career opportunities spanning across different specialties and practice scopes. Travelers rated Palo Alto high in the nurse manager and patient safety categories, and the majority of respondents said they would work at the facility again and would also recommend it to others.
University of Minnesota Medical Center - University Campus - Minneapolis, MN
Serving as the primary teaching hospital for the University of Minnesota Medical School, an assignment at this facility provides travel nurses with constant exposure to the latest technologies and countless opportunities to learn new skills and techniques. Travelers also said they would recommend this facility to others and would also take another assignment here again--further solidifying its rankings among the top traveler-friendly facilities.
In 2010, the University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview, received two notable distinctions from both U.S. News and World Report and Thomson Reuters for the facility’s excellent patient care and clinical performance and quality. The University campus also ranked high for appropriate RN staffing levels--a vital component for both travel nurses and admitted patients.
Scott and White Memorial Hospital – Temple, TX
As the largest multi-specialty practice in Texas, Scott and White offers a multitude of opportunities for travel nurses who can work in its “636-bed Level I trauma center, 50-bed long-term acute care hospital or 150-bed acute care hospital.” Travel nurses on assignment at Scott and White applauded the permanent staff’s friendliness and the ability to learn new skills while on assignment. For Samantha Hutto, RN, who took an assignment at Scott and White with American Mobile Healthcare, the facility made her feel right at home. “I honestly don't know if I could've had a better first assignment than the one (my recruiter) found for me--it was a perfect fit!”
Sharp Healthcare – San Diego, CA
With its ANCC Magnet status for excellence in nursing and patient care, a Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and countless other distinctions and recognitions, Sharp Healthcare is a natural fit for the top traveler-friendly facilities listing. But it’s not just the portfolio of awards that make Sharp a favorite choice for travel nurses.
Travel nurses who took an assignment at Sharp praised the nurse managers and also said they would recommend the healthcare system to other travelers. Featuring hospitals and clinics throughout San Diego and a broad range of medical services from robotics to wound care, Sharp provides travel nurses a world of opportunity regardless of specialty or clinical skill set.
Stanford Hospital and Clinics - Stanford, CA
Earning favorable rankings in the staff friendliness, patient safety and nurse staffing level categories, Stanford Hospital and Clinics’ dedication to quality patient care is reflected in the travel nurses’ rankings.
Renetta Roberson, RN, with American Mobile Healthcare, recently decided to try travel nursing and took her first assignment at Stanford. She couldn’t be happier with her decision.
“I have been with the same hospital for 20 years and made a big change to become a traveling nurse,” she explained. “My recruiter was so warm and knowledgeable and made the transition a breeze! So far, I am very happy with the decision I made and I am pleased to work with such a professional company.”
Hendrick Medical Center - Abilene, TX
Serving the city of Abilene and the area of the “Texas Midwest,” Hendrick Medical Center is a 504-bed medical center specializing in women’s services, heart and cancer care, rehab and much more.
Among the numerous accolades it has received over the years, the facility first earned the coveted Pathway to Excellence™ designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in 2007 and then again in 2010 when it was up for re-designation. This designation certifies the facility is an ideal environment for nursing practice, which travel nurses echoed in their rankings of Hendrick.
Kaiser Permanente - Santa Clara Medical Center – Santa Clara, CA 58070
Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara Medical Center is one of 35 hospitals that make up the Kaiser Permanent health network. The facility’s convenient Bay Area location provides travel nurses with easy access to some of the area’s most famous attractions and note-worthy places to visit.
Travel nurses gave the medical center high ratings in the staff friendliness and nurse manager categories, making Kaiser Santa Clara a great assignment choice for nurses looking for a collegial work environment and supportive nurse management.
*Travel staffing companies American Mobile Healthcare, NursesRx and Medical Express participated in the survey. The Top 15 facilities were chosen based on highest combined ranking in the following areas: Staff Friendliness, Nurse Manager, Orientation, Patient Safety, Learning New Skills and RN Staffing Levels. The travelers were also asked if they would work at the facility again and if they would recommend it to others.

Hair loss is big business in the medical tourism industry, and Türkiye's transplant clinics are cashing in
On the streets of Istanbul, they are unmissable: groups of young men with heads swaddled in gauze, their scalps pricked a glistening red.
You can find them year-round marvelling at the grandeur of the Blue Mosque, haggling at the Grand Bazaar, and queuing at the check-in counter at the airport.
Few are Turkish, nor stay in town more than a few days – just long enough to recover from their surgeries before travelling home again.
All however come with the same singular mission: to find an antidote to their baldness.
"My father's side, my mother's side, they've all been losing their hair," said Paymaan Shahrokhey, who arrived in Istanbul from Sydney last summer after he noticed his receding hairline.
"It's just a matter of time. And I thought we're going on a holiday to Europe. Why not come and get it done?"
Since the turn of the century, Türkiye has become a mecca for hair transplants, a cosmetic procedure that involves taking healthy follicles from the back of the head and implanting them on the crown.
Hundreds of thousands of mainly young men make the pilgrimage from around the world every year, according to tourism officials, to contribute to an industry that was worth $3 billion in 2022.
In Australia, the procedure can cost more than $20,000, but in Türkiye it's anywhere between a tenth to a quarter of that, while still offering in some instances high standards of care.
Clinics compete fiercely for customers who largely come from the Arab world, the United States and Europe, offering all-inclusive packages sold using flashy marketing.
Promotional videos show customers months after their procedure confidently showing off lush heads of hair as their wives and girlfriends marvel proudly.
Celebrities like Lewis Hamilton, Steve Carell, Matthew McConaughey and Gordon Ramsay are reported to have had the treatment.
At the Smile Hair Clinic, a multi-storey building overlooking a busy highway deep in Istanbul's Asian side, the waiting area feels like the lobby of an upmarket hotel rather than a medical practice.
Glass chandeliers hang from the ceiling and staff offer refreshments to customers waiting idly for their appointment.
An adjoining room fitted to look like a barber shop doubles as a social media studio to record customer testimonials, which are posted to the company's more than a million Instagram followers.
Aside from surgical staff, the clinic employs a team of six to push content through online channels, where the vast majority of new clients are to be found.
Sales staff say openly they are "selling confidence", and often deal directly with the wives or girlfriends of prospective customers.
"It may not be a great issue for some people to be bald, but most of the people who come here tell us, 'Oh, you changed my life,'" said Smile co-founder and hair transplant surgeon Gökay Bilgin.
"It's really crucial for them to take nice pictures or maybe even to get intimate."
At their core, hair transplants offer little more than an illusion of hair growth using carefully placed grafts to give the impression of a dense head of hair.
If a patient does not take proper care of their head during the months-long recovery, it can cause damage to the implanted follicles.
In the first weeks after the procedure, patients are instructed they cannot shower or work out – water pressure and sweating on the scalp risk dislodging newly implanted follicles.
Upon returning home, many find their sleep suffers as they cannot lie flat in bed for fear contact with bedsheets and pillows might similarly undo progress.
On the day of Mr Shahrokhey's surgery, staff began by shaving his head before using a black marker to sketch out where new hair grafts would go on his crown and along his hairline.
Next, in an upper-floor theatre, his scalp was injected with a local anaesthetic before a surgeon began the first stage of the procedure: extraction.
One by one, between 3,000 and 5,000 hair follicles were plucked from healthy areas at the back of his head and placed into Petri dishes ready to be implanted.
On a TV facing him across the room, a recorded message showed a man clad in white who warned against sudden movements during the surgery.
"If you have a stiff neck or just want to catch your breath, let the team know and we'll give you a small break," the man said in English through the screen.
Out in the waiting area, about half a dozen men sat idly on their phones or staring out the window, their heads wrapped in bandages from the morning.
"It's an odd experience," said Alex, who flew from London for the procedure. "It feels like I'm wearing a helmet. I can't really feel my head at all."
He then faced a recovery period of several weeks, when he wouldn't be able to shower or sleep flat on his back. If all went well, he'd see the full results of the treatment in about 18 months.
"Going out and about with friends, it was always the constant consciousness of the wind blowing and catching your hair and exposing the parts where you don't have any," he said.
Back in Mr Shahrokhey's room, three surgical staff huddled around his head, lifting plucked hair follicles from a tray and pushing them delicately into newly drilled holes on the crown.
Working in silence, their arms worked in practised rhythmic motions, making the process look simple to the untrained eye.
Hair is a lucrative business, but transplants aren't the only option
In a country with poor working conditions and low wages in the public healthcare system, private clinics targeting wealthy foreigners present for many an irresistible opportunity.
The industry's boom in Türkiye has given rise to illegal clinics that skirt regulations and operate with poorly trained staff, leading to procedures that can go catastrophically wrong.
Sometimes for foreign customers, it can be hard to tell on the face of it if a clinic is reputable or trustworthy.
A botched procedure by unlicensed staff – who often are not covered by malpractice insurance – can cause dangerous and irreversible health problems, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, a non-profit association based in Chicago.
Such problems, the association says, are not limited to Turkish clinics nor only to men, but are present in countries across the world.
Even at reputable clinics, transplants don't offer a perfect solution for everyone who experiences hair loss.
Female pattern hair loss, which is the most common type of hair loss among women, differs from male pattern baldness.
Whereas men's hair loss is typically concentrated at the crown, women generally tend to experience thinning all over the head, which can make it more difficult to find suitable donor areas to transplant from.
"I wouldn't recommend it to any female looking at a hair transplant as an option for hair loss," said Gina, a retired school teacher from the north-eastern United States who underwent the procedure after her hair began to thin in her early 20s.
Far less common, hair transplants for women are not widely marketed in the way they are to men, and present their own medical risks.
After researching a promising clinic, Gina claims she was not told by staff that the procedure, in which they grafted follicles from the back of her head onto a particularly thinned area on her crown, would not work in the way it did in men.
After some initial signs of new growth in the first six months after her surgery, her hair began to fall out again. She felt betrayed.
"I ended up kind of back at square one," she said. "For a lot of women, their hair is a big part of their identity. It's devastating. Why did it have to happen to me?"
Gina has since come to terms with her botched surgery in part by wearing a "hair topper" – a kind of supplemental wig that blends in with underlying hair – as well as by connecting to other women like her on Instagram.
"That may sound silly in the big scheme of things, but it's boosted my self-confidence exponentially."

We are a medical device company based in Santa Clara, CA, dedicated to helping people with heart failure feel better and live longer.
Ancora Heart is dedicated to providing new treatment options for patients suffering from heart failure. Our team has a deep appreciation for the challenges faced by the estimated 26 million patients across the globe who are living with this chronic, progressive disease. Despite advances in heart failure treatment, high rehospitalization and mortality rates persist. Patients suffer from debilitating symptoms, exercise intolerance, poor quality of life, frequent hospitalization, and reduced life expectancy. In fact, up to 50 percent of people who develop heart failure die within five years of diagnosis. It is clear that patients need new options to treat symptoms and improve their quality of life, and we are committed to developing new solutions that help change the course of this challenging condition.
To address this challenge, we developed the AccuCinch ® Ventricular Restoration System, the only completely transcatheter device designed to treat the enlarged left ventricle, restore structure and function and bring relief to heart failure patients who remain symptomatic despite current guideline-directed medical care. The AccuCinch System procedure is minimally invasive and is designed to augment the existing care cardiologists provide their heart failure patients.
For patients who have heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF, or pumping efficiency), in whom the disease has progressed beyond the ability of medications and pacemakers to manage symptoms, the AccuCinch System may provide a new treatment option by filling the gap between medication or pacemaker therapy and more invasive treatments, including left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) or heart transplant.
The AccuCinch System has been studied in multiple clinical trials in the United States and the European Union, and is currently enrolling patients in the CORCINCH-HF Study, a prospective, randomized, open-label, multicenter, international, clinical safety and efficacy investigation, which is designed to enroll 400 patients at up to 80 centers worldwide.
The study has a unique design allowing initial analysis of safety and clinical efficacy for PMA submission after the first 250 patients have reached six months of follow-up, and then a second analysis after the entire cohort has reached 12 months of follow-up.
