Nashville International Airport

If you're traveling to Nashville , Tennessee there is a good chance you could pass through the Nashville International Airport (BNA) along the way. This bustling regional hub sees more than 15 million people pass through its hallways on an annual basis and yet it still manages to feel accessible and easy to navigate. You might even spot a few musicians playing throughout the terminal as you hurry past towards your gate.

Originally named Berry Field when it was first built back in 1937, Nashville's airport underwent a major renovation in 1987 when the current terminal was built and the name was changed, thanks to a substantial investment from American Airlines.

More than 20 airlines operate out of the airport today, which features four runways spread out over 3900 acres. Chief amongst them is Southwest Airlines , which sees Nashville as a "focus city." Other major airlines include United, Delta, Air Canada, and British Airways.

If you'll be flying into and out of the Music City in near future, this is your complete guide on what to expect as you travel through the airport.

Nashville International Airport Code Location, and Flight Information

  • Airport Code: BNA
  • Terminal Address: One Terminal Drive, Nashville, TN 27214
  • Website: FlyNashville.com
  • Phone: (615) 275-1675
  • Emergency Phone: (615) 275-1703
  • Flight Tracker: Track both departures and arrivals here .

Know Before You Go

The airport's main hub is the Robert C. H. Mathews Jr. Terminal, which features 40+ gates spread out across three individual concourses. A unified security checkpoint is found just past the ticketing counters and serves as the gateway to all of the concourses, with access to a variety of restaurants, pubs, shops, and other amenities in each area.

The terminal building itself has three floors, with ticketing and passenger drop-off on the third level, while baggage claim and passenger pick-up is on the first. Offices and service space are found on the second floor, which is rarely accessed by travelers.

Security wait times at BNA vary greatly by day and time, although early mornings tend to be the most crowded. It is advised that travelers arrive at the airport at least 1.5 hours before their flight to ensure they have enough time to reach their gates. TSA PreCheck lines are usually quicker, but can often be backed up as well. Checkpoint wait times are prominently displayed at the top of the airport's website , making it easier for passengers to estimate how much time they should allow when navigating through the airport.

Tip: Both security checkpoints grant access to all of the gates and terminals, which means passengers can use either one at any time. Often, one is substantially less busy than the other.

Nashville International shares the grounds with an Air National Guard Base, which still operates out of Berry Field. That base is the headquarters of the 118th Airlift Wing, which provides logistical support for active combat units in times of war. Aircraft from the unit can often be spotted coming and going from the airport, but those operations have little to no impact on civilian traffic.

BNA Parking

Nashville International features a variety of options for parking, including valet service, a parking ramp located next to the terminal, and several large parking lots further out. Finding a parking space at the airport is usually easy, although it may be best to check the website to get a sense of where it is best to park.

Airport Parking Prices vary depending on where you park. The current rates are as follows:

  • Valet - $34/day
  • Terminal Garage - $24/day (walk to terminal)
  • Economy Lots - $12/day (shuttle service every 5-10 minutes)
  • Express Park - $12/day (on-demand shuttle)

As with most major airports, off-site parking is available too, with The Parking Spot , Fly Away Parking , and Park 'n Fly all being popular choices.

Driving Directions

Located on the aptly-named Terminal Drive, the Nashville airport is surprisingly easy to reach by car, although during rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon, getting in and out of BNA can be a challenge.

The airport itself is located just off of Interstate 40, which is a prominent access route through much of Nashville. Highways 24 and 440 both connect with I-40 as well, making it easy to navigate through the city.

Public Transportation and Taxis

As with most major airports, BNA offers a variety of options for getting to and from the terminal. For instance, Nashville's MTA bus system provides service to arriving and departing passengers alike, with a variety of stops and drop off locations. Visit the MTA website for more information.

Additionally, several taxi companies operate at the airport with fares starting with a $7 meter and an additional $2.10 per mile charge added from there. Trips to downtown Nashville or the Gaylord Opryland Hotel are covered with a flat rate of $25.

Many hotels offer free shuttle service and of course, both Lyft and Uber are authorized to operate at Nashville International as well.

Where to Eat and Drink

There are a variety of places to eat and drink at Nashville International, with two small food courts located within the terminal and several other restaurants, bars, and coffee shops located along each concourse. One of the food courts is found midway through Concourse C and the other serves as the entrance point for both Concourse A and B. Those locations are home to fast food outlets such as Burger King, Wendy's, Blue Coast Burrito, and Nathan's Hot Dogs.

Those looking for something a bit more local and substantial will want to check out Whitts BBQ . Located in Concourse C, this restaurant offers sit-down service, drinks, live music, and plenty of tasty Tennessee barbecue. Those departing from Concourse B can head over to the Tennessee Tavern , which is a Jack Daniel's themed bar with a full menu. If you're in Concourse A, drop by La Hacienda for traditional Mexican fare.

Just need a quick drink before your flight? The airport is home to two Starbucks coffee shops, a Vino Volo wine bar, a Yazoo Beer kiosk, and Tennessee Brew Works .

Where to Shop

In addition to the usual newsstands and book stores, as well as snack and drink outlets, Nashville has a few unique places to shop before catching your flight. For instance, Boswell's Music City Harley-Davidson offers officially licensed apparel and gear from the motorcycle manufacturer, while Godiva Chocolatier sells wonderful truffles, boxed chocolates, and drinks. Meanwhile, the Graycliff Cigar Company has handcrafted cigars and other tobacco products, while Music City Beer & Spirits sells locally made adult beverages.

Other shops of interest include the Opry Originals outlet, a Life is Good store, and Tennessee Whiskey House, which sells bottled spirits. For truly original shops however, check out Radio Road for women's travel clothes and Spirit of the Red Horse for gifts and art inspired by Native American culture.

Wi-Fi and Charging Stations

Nashville International Airport offers travelers free Wi-Fi across the entire terminal, although it isn't particularly fast or reliable. The wireless internet is good enough to check emails, send text messages, and check the status of a flight, but it is often too sluggish to get any serious work done. To connect, simply select the Boingo Hotspot network and follow the onscreen prompts.

Charging stations for mobile devices, tablets, and laptops are located throughout the terminal as well, and many chairs at the gates have outlets installed in them. These aren't always reliable either, so travelers may have to search around a bit to find one that is working properly.

Nashville International Airport Tips and Facts

  • BNA has featured live music since 1988 and includes six performance areas throughout the airport. More than 700 artists perform there each year. Find out who is playing on the airport's live music calendar .
  • The Nashville Airport always has an art exhibit on display with a nice mix of modern works, pop culture art, and more. Click here to discover what's currently on display.
  • Nashville International lives up to its name, offering flights not only to the Caribbean, but also to Canada, but to Europe as well, including a nonstop route to London .
  • In recent years, BNA has seen a tremendous upswing in visitors, prompting the airport to announce a major expansion to be completed by 2025.

Nashville International Airport (BNA)

Nashville International Airport ( BNA ) is a medium to large sized multi-use airport. It serves air carriers as well as general aviation, cargo operations, and the military. It boasts three parallel runways, as well as an intersecting runway. A complex series of taxiways provides access to terminals, FBOs, and cargo ramps, located on all sides of the airport. View a printable Pilot Handbook  of the BNA information found on this Web page.

Know Before You Go

  • Runway configuration consists of 3 parallel RWYS 02L/20R, 02C/20C, and 02R/20L, and intersecting RWY 13/31.
  • Several incidents have occurred when aircraft cleared to land on RWY 20C have landed or attempted to land on RWY 20R.  The RWYS are closely spaced however the threshold for RWY 20C is considerably further south than the threshold for RWY 20R.  Aircraft flying a right downwind for RWY 20C may be tempted to land on RWY 20R because it comes into sight first.
  • A complex TWY structure at BNA includes TWY S, which is parallel to RWY 20C.  Although TWY S is marked, lighted, and only 75 feet wide, its shoulders are wider than typical on the north end because it used to be a RWY in the past. Pilots taxiing to RWY 20C via TWYs S6 and S7 have attempted to depart on TWY S instead of RWY 20C.
  • Visual clues to assist the pilot include the word “TAXI” painted in large yellow letters on the surface of TWY S at S6 and S7.
  • Another area of potential confusion, but not an official Hot Spot, occurs with aircraft, predominantly air carriers, taxiing to RWY 02R/20L via TWY L and TWY H. The pilot may miss the slight left turn to remain on TWY L and continue on TWY L8. This could lead to the pilot inadvertently crossing RWY 31.
  • Small aircraft landing RWY 20L may not be clearly visible from the TWR if they clear the RWY at H4 or H5.  Unless specifically asked, a “cleared of RWY” call is not a requirement but, in this situation, may help the TWR for situational awareness.
  • Two vehicle access roads, located between TWY H3 and TWY H4, connect RWY 20L and 20R. These roads are wide enough to be confused for a taxiway.
  • The Terminal Ramp area is a Non-Movement area and is not controlled by TWR. Refrain from asking GND for parking issues or gate-pushback clearances in this area.
  • BNA undergoes frequent construction. Check NOTAMS.
  • Pilots need to be aware of the Approach Hold Lines for RWY 20C on TWY K.
  • VFR Traffic transiting the area may be present outside the inner ring and under the outer shelf of BNA Class C airspace. They may not be in communication with ATC.

Below find various BNA-specific information and things to be aware of, as well as general information to inform your preflight planning. This will be reviewed quarterly and updated as needed. This information is to supplement the From the Flight Deck Videos that are produced by the FAA Runway Safety Group. Here you will also find information provided by the local air traffic controllers at the airport where you intend to fly. The information is subject to change. Not for navigation or legal* pre-flight action. Always refer to official pre-flight materials such as, but not limited to, NOTAMs, airport diagrams, VFR charts and airport construction notices for the latest airport-specific details.

BNA Tower Administrative Office Business Phone 615-495-4594 Open 0800 to 1700 – Monday through Friday

The airspace at BNA is Class C with a ceiling up to and including 6000’ MSL. (Refer to Sectional Chart)

Class C Airspace Requirements (CFR §91.130 and AIM 3-1-4; 3-2-4)

Hot Spots

  • HS 1   Maintain vigilance as hold bars at TWY T3/TWY K intersection and TWY K west of TWY T4 protect RWY 20C arrivals.
  • HS 2   Maintain vigilance as TWY S is often mistaken for RWY 20C departure surface.
  • There are many areas of congestion in and around Nashville (BNA)
  • The Class C encompasses the downtown Nashville area. With there being four major hospitals in the vicinity, numerous medevacs transit through the airspace. While many remain under the shelf, some medevacs call the tower for mid-field crossings.
  • Aircraft in the downtown vicinity should use extreme caution as multiple touring helicopters based at KJWN frequent the area.
  • Traffic permitting, the tower will accommodate downtown tours in the Class C.
  • There may be other VFR aircraft in the area (departing aircraft, traffic pattern, VFR traffic transitioning the area, etc.). All pilots conducting practice instrument approaches should be extremely vigilant to observe any traffic that may be in the pattern or departing the airport.
  • John C. Tune Airport (KJWN) is located eleven (11) miles west of BNA and has a Control Tower. KJWN services an extremely diverse variety of aircraft types, and experiences high levels of congestion. See KJWN LTA for more information.
  • Wrong Surface Departure risk exists.
  • Verify proper heading prior to starting takeoff roll on all intersection departures.
  • Do not confuse TWY S for RWY 20C.
  • Wrong Surface Landing risk exists.
  • Positive identification of the landing RWY needs to be a part of every pilot’s landing checklist. The triple parallels are a little complicated in that RWY 20R/2L and 20C/2C are closer in proximity than RWY 20C/2C to 20L/2R. Use caution.
  • Do not confuse TWY S for RWY 20C.

Surface Risk – Movement Area

  • H1- TWY K is in the approach area for RWY 20C. Use caution with the approach hold lines. It is always okay to verify with the TWR that you are unsure to hold or proceed.
  • H2- TWY S 6 and S 7 on S. The width of S is larger than a normal TWY and can potentially cause confusion. Large yellow letters indicating “TAXI” are on S to mitigate confusion and assist in situational awareness.
  • While not listed as a hot spot, two access roads are present halfway down RWY 20L/2R that can be confused as an exit point. There are signs to help prevent any confusion.
  • Especially TWY K and RWY 20C Approach Hold
  • TWY L at RWY 13
  • TWY H at RWY 31

 Additional Cautions

  • If ever in doubt about your position or your instructions, ask the TWR.

BNA® Unveils New 200,000 sq. ft. Grand Lobby, Reopens Central Terminal at Nashville International Airport®

Nashville International Airport (BNA) today unveiled the new Grand Lobby in the completely renovated and reimagined 200,000-square-foot space in the center of the terminal, including 24 TSA security screening lanes and multimedia digital and visual art.

Nashville, TENN. (January 19, 2023) – Nashville International Airport (BNA) today unveiled the new Grand Lobby in the completely renovated and reimagined 200,000-square-foot space in the center of the terminal, including 24 TSA security screening lanes and multimedia digital and visual art. A core component of the BNA Vision® plan, the Grand Lobby will officially open to the public on the morning of January 24, marking the return to a single terminal at Nashville International Airport.

BNA Vision is Nashville International Airport®’s bold growth and expansion plan to provide world-class facilities for business and leisure travelers in Tennessee and surrounding states.

“Since the launch of BNA Vision in 2017, we’ve been hard at work building and renovating Nashville International Airport to meet the travel demands of Tennessee today and into the future,” said Doug Kreulen, President and CEO of Nashville International Airport. “The new Grand Lobby dramatically changes the look, feel, and energy of the airport. We’ve more than doubled our security screening capacity to handle the region’s growth and popularity as a destination. With large-scale art installations, high-definition video displays, new restaurants, and retail spaces, and floor-to-ceiling windows, it will be clear as soon as you step foot into BNA that Nashville is home to a world-class airport.”

BNA’s Grand Lobby features a sweeping roof canopy with an oculus skylight reminiscent of an acoustic guitar when viewed from above. It also includes a pedestrian bridge that connects to the Grand Plaza, Terminal Parking Garage, and our future hotel. Once inside, travelers will be greeted with an immersive multimedia showcase through two enormous 12K resolution screens. Gentilhomme Studio developed the screens and content with the guiding mantra of “Nashville awaits your return.”

The lobby also prominently features a five-story sculpture from artist Jacob Hashimoto called The Unscalable Ramparts of Time, an installation crafted with 8,000 washi paper kites suspended from fiber glass rods. Each side wall of the lobby showcases a 105-foot hanging garden by Garden on the Wall that portray the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge and the Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge through the use of moss, hydrangea, ferns and other flora found natively in Tennessee. The master architect for BNA Vision is Corgan , and the design-build team for the Grand Lobby was Hensel Phelps and Fentress Architects .

Key BNA Vision project timelines:

  • On-site Hilton Hotel and Terminal Garage – Late 2023
  • Satellite Concourse – Late 2023
  • International Arrivals Facility – Fall 2023
  • Concourse D and Terminal Wings Expansion – Summer 2020
  • Terminal Garage 1 – Summer 2020
  • Terminal Garage 2 – December 2018
  • Interim International Arrivals Building – Spring 2018

“The opening of the new on-airport Hilton Hotel and International Arrivals Facility later this year will mark the completion of our original BNA Vision plan, but we’re already looking beyond that given Nashville and Middle Tennessee’s unprecedented growth,” Kreulen added. “The next phase, which we’re calling New Horizon, is an additional $1.4 billion plan phased out over the next six years with completion in late 2028. That work is underway now, and we can’t wait to share our progress over the next few years.”

About Nashville International Airport

As infrastructure critical to the region’s growth and prosperity, BNA® is a vital asset for Middle Tennessee and serves as a gateway to Music City and beyond. Simple Flying

Nashville international airport's busiest routes this month.

Four of the airports are on the East Coast, while one is in the West.

  • Nashville International Airport (BNA) is a crucial gateway with over 17,000 scheduled flights this month.
  • BNA is connected to 93 destinations, with Chicago O'Hare International Airport being the most connected, followed by LaGuardia Airport and Denver International Airport.
  • American Airlines dominates the routes between BNA and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, while Charlotte Douglas International Airport sees a higher number of flights from American Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

Though Nashville International Airport is not one of the busiest in the United States or a major international hub, it is a crucial airport in a major city. Nashville is known as Music City, home to several music studios, famous artists, restaurants, and bars. Though country music is significant, so are several other genres. Nashville International Airport (BNA) is the gateway for many musicians and major tours and has over 17,000 scheduled flights this month.

According to Cirium data, 17,174 passenger flights are scheduled in November, and with the level of people who do business and/or reside in Nashville, surely there is a large amount of charter and private flights. Eighteen airlines serve Music City's airport, including two foreign, British Airways and Air Canada. The largest market share is held by Southwest Airlines, an all-Boeing 737 low-cost carrier with 8,421 flights.

BNA is connected to 93 destinations, some as often as 28 times daily and some once weekly. Data shows that in November, Chicago O'Hare International Airport is the most connected to BNA, with 393 flights in each direction, which equates to as many as 28 daily flights. Three airlines market flights between BNA and ORD, but eight operate flights. United Airlines, American Airlines, and Southwest Airlines are the marketing airlines for the route, but several regional carriers operate flights for United and American.

LaGuardia Airport in New York City is the second-most connected airport to BNA this month, with 388 flights in each direction. While this route also sees up to 28 daily flights, it drops to 18 on some days. American, JetBlue, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest compete on the BNA-LGA route. Delta and Southwest hold the largest market share on the 764-mile route, with five daily flights in each direction.

Denver International Airport, in the Mile-High City of Colorado, has 358 flights scheduled one-way and 356 in the other direction. Flights are operated by three airlines, two of which have significant operations in Denver, Southwest, and United. Frontier is the third airline on the route but has a minuscule market share compared to Southwest, which has 224 one-way flights, and United, with 108. On some days, Southwest has eight flights to Denver, using several variants of its 737s.

Four and five

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is number four on the list of most connected airports. This month, the Virginia airport serving the nation's capital has 337 flights and 33,000 seats in each direction. The 562-mile route is dominated by American Airlines, which uses three of its regional carriers to connect the two cities up to five times daily. Delta and Southwest compete with American on the route.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport rounds out the top five, with 332 flights in one direction and 331 in the other. More than 84,000 seats are available on the route this month, served by American Airlines (mainline and regional) and Southwest Airlines. American has up to ten daily flights, while Southwest has just two.

Nashville airport hotel opening brings state, local leaders together: 'Front door to our city'

A irplanes thundered through the sky — just outside its front doors — but inside, the sound-proofed Hilton BNA Nashville Airport Terminal hotel served as the serene setting of Wednesday evening's grand opening celebration.

Gov. Bill Lee, Nashville Mayor Freddie O'Connell, hotel developers and Nashville International Airport officials spoke to hundreds of business and community leaders about the expected impact of the new, 305-room upscale hotel, the first on the airport terminal.

"This airport is a jewel, it's an asset," Lee said. "People want to be here, companies want to move here. What that means is economic opportunity for more and more Tennesseans."

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Lee spoke alongside O'Connell in a show of solidarity following a divisive battle over airport control between the state and Metro. Representatives from developer Chartwell Hospitality, financier Rockbridge Capital, operator Hilton Americas and the airport emphasized the spirit of cooperation essential to making the 10-story hotel a reality.

"Airports aren't just places you fly into on a plane; they're gateways for people to explore the world; to go on exciting trips or meaningful business trips," said Hilton Americas President Danny Hughes. "They're the first point of entry.

"There's an old saying: 'You never get a second chance to make a first impression.' And very often the first impression of a city is the airport."

Experiencing Hilton at BNA

The hotel's entrance is on a 5th story bridge connecting the airport terminal with the terminal parking garage. The Sky Lounge, on its rooftop, enjoys sprawling views of downtown, a pool, firepit, patio tables, lounges and a bar. There is also a restaurant and coffee shop on the first floor.

The grand opening event was held in its elegant ballroom, under large geometric chandeliers. Nashville-themed art decorates the walls throughout the hotel, from music-inspired paintings to a rug shaped like a map of the city.

As the event took place, the hotel also welcomed some of its first guests.

Chartwell Hospitality CEO Rob Schaedle said the hotel is the Franklin-based developer's 19th Hilton franchise and its 16th hotel in the Nashville area.

"This has been a journey that we started five years ago," Schaedle said. "To be able to build a world-class hotel like this — you don't get many opportunities to do this. We really appreciate the opportunity."

Metro Nashville Airport Authority board chair Joycelyn Stevenson called the hotel a "monumental achievement of BNA Vision, our seven-year renovation and expansion program."

Stevenson added that the board is focused on maximizing opportunities from a decade of ongoing rapid growth: "We recognize the unique position we're in to plan long-range for the future of our airport and our city."

Governor on BNA: An 'important project that we worked together on'

The airport's growth has brought new opportunities and new challenges.

Last year, Lee signed a bill into law to unseat the Metro Nashville Airport Authority, a six-member board appointed by the mayor of Nashville. The law would have transferred appointment power to the governor, lieutenant governor and the speaker of the Tennessee House of Representatives. But Metro sued the state and won on its argument that the law violated the Tennessee Constitution.

Despite the troubles, Lee celebrated the hotel as an example of a successful partnership between the state and Metro.

"I'm particularly glad for the way the city and state comes together at the airport and in places that matter to all Tennesseans," Lee said. "It's an important project that we worked together on."

O'Connell echoed the governor's sentiment of cooperation, particularly in joint state-Metro transportation improvements.

"I'm delighted to be here in the spirit of partnership," O'Connell said. "It's a celebration of the dynamic growth all around us and a celebration of Nashville as a premier destination.

"We're trying to make sure the airport remains successful. This is for so many people the front door to our city."

Frequently asked questions

1. i only have a 6 (or less) hours stopover, can i still visit the red square.

It strongly depends on the day of the week and time. If your 6 hours layover is at night - we can do it, but at day time we strongly advise against it, as you won't have enough time to enjoy the tour and be on-time back for your return flight. After all, we don't want you to miss your return flight.

2. The quoted price is per person?

The fares for our layover tour mentioned above are per vehicle, so it doesn't matter if you are a party of 2 or 3 (or 7) passengers, the fare stays the same.

3. Do I need a visa?

Almost certainly: Yes! In general, most Western citizen (e.g. European Union, UK, USA, Canada) need to obtain at least a transit or tourist visa in advance to enter the territory of the Russian Federation. If you're not sure if you need a visa, have a look at the Visa policy of Russia map or contact your local travel agency.

4. How do I make a reservation?

When visiting our online reservation form , you can choose Tours . The form then will guide you through all necessary details. If you have doubts, be welcome to contact us.

If you have any open questions, you can contact us by phone, email or chat. Or just simply fill out the question form below, and our team gets back to you by email as soon as possible.

How do I get from Moscow airports to the city center?

bna airport tour

Moscow with its more than twelve million inhabitants has three international airports. The best known is Sheremetyevo (international abbreviation SVO), which is 35 km northwest of Red Square. Russia’s largest airline Aeroflot has its hub here. The second largest airport, Domodedovo (international abbreviation DME), is about 45 km south-east of the center, from where the S7 airline, which mainly flies within Russia, and numerous international airlines such as Lufthansa take off and land. Finally, there is the third largest airport called Moscow-Wnukovo (abbreviation VKO), which serves numerous low-cost airlines such as Pobeda and is the closest to Moscow city center at just under 30 km.

Aeroexpress to the city center

First the good news – all three airports are easy to reach, both by taxi and by public transport such as train and bus. All three airports are connected to the Moscow city center by means of the so-called Aeroexpress. The Aeroexpress is certainly the most popular and the easiest way for foreigners to get to the center of Moscow. With the striking red signs Aeroexpress, you can find the way to the express trains both at Moscow’s three major airports and at the respective departure stations.

The modern, wifi-equipped trains from the private provider have little in common with the city railway trains from the Russian capital, which still originate from the Soviet era, and run to all three airports from early morning until after midnight. The schedule varies from airport to airport and time of day. As a rule of thumb, trains go to Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo every half an hour during the day to and from the airport, while Wnukowo is only served hourly for much of the day.

The same pricing scheme applies to all three airports: at 300 rubles (around $ 4.50) for a one-way trip, the prices for the trip are significantly more expensive than regular public transport tickets in Moscow, but are still affordable. Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo are each around 35 minutes from the center, and Domodedovo Airport is 45 minutes away.

bna airport tour

If you buy the ticket in advance or via the app, there is a 50 ruble discount, further discounts are available if you book a return trip with one ticket, which costs 600 rubles (around $ 8.50). When it comes to value for money, the Aeroexpress trains are certainly the best option as a solo traveler. Especially since bypassing the often treacherous Moscow traffic – in the rush hour a drive by car can take an hour longer than previously estimated.

The biggest disadvantage is that you can of course not go directly to the desired destination within Moscow. However, all three Aeroexpress trains take you to one of the major Moscow train stations, which in turn are connected to the ring line of the Moscow Metro, from where you can quickly reach all corners of the center of Moscow.

Transport connections

  • Sheremetyevo Airport -> Belorussky Vokzal (journey time 35 minutes)
  • Domodedovo -> Paveletsky Vokzal (journey time 45 minutes)
  • Wnukowo -> Kiewsky Vokzal (travel time 35 minutes)

Prices (apply to all three airports in the city and to the airport):

  • One-way ticket at the counter = 300 rubles
  • Online ticket = 300 rubles
  • Round trip = 600 rubles
  • Tickets for 10 trips = 2,300 rubles
  • Ticket Business Class = 800 rubles

In the city or to the airport by taxi app

Alternatively, the transport from and to the airport can also be regulated using the taxi app. Yandex-Taxi and Gett are the two most popular providers in Moscow. At Yandex the flat rate to all three international airports currently costs 1100 rubles ($ 16) and at Gett even only 950 rubles ($ 14) in the cheapest variant, with a small car of the size VW Polo or Ford Focus.

Unless you want to go to the airport with too much luggage or with more than two people, this is certainly the easiest method. Moderate surcharges are required for larger vehicle categories. Without knowledge of Russian, however, it would be much easier to get to the airport by taxi app than from the airport to the city. Due to the confusing location in front of the three major airports, it may be necessary to contact the driver by phone to find the right vehicle. Because the GPS signal of the respective app only gives the location with an accuracy of about ten to fifteen meters – with several lanes running side by side in front of the terminal and dozens of waiting passengers and arriving taxis, it is certainly not always easy to find yourself straight away.

If you are still dependent on the WiFi of the airport building and therefore must not move too far from the entrance, the whole thing could prove to be difficult. From the city to the airport, however, the taxi app without knowledge of Russian proves to be the much easier method. The hotel or AirBnB address can be entered as the pick-up location, and a taxi can usually be ordered within a few minutes.

Moscow trip planned? Here you can find out how to get the necessary visa! !

With the classic taxi into the city

If you want to drive into the city by regular taxi, you have to expect considerable additional costs. The website of Domodedovo airport gives 2,000 rubles as a guide for a trip to the center, i.e. just $ 28. Trips to and from Vnukovo and Sheremetyevo should be a little cheaper. As with the taxi apps, the following also applies here: Especially at rush hour, you should probably prefer the train because Moscow’s streets burst at the seams in the after-hours traffic.

Bus metro combination

For experienced travelers to Russia or visitors with a particularly tight budget, there is still the option of all three airports to get to the nearest metro station by bus or Marshrutka (mini-bus with a fixed route but flexible stops).

From Vnukowo, for example, the 45M minibus line goes to the Yugo-Zapadnaya metro station on the red line № 1 of the Moscow Metro, for just 150 rubles. Together with the 62 rubles ticket for the metro, you can get into the city for just over $ 3.

Sheremetyevo Airport can be reached from the Rechnoy Vokzal metro station on Marshrutka line 949 for 80 rubles, or from Planernaya metro station with Marshrutka 948 for 80 rubles ($ 1.1). The minibuses run approximately every 15 minutes. Domodedovo Airport is connected by express bus to the metro station of the same name every half hour. The fare here is 150 rubles (a good 2,1 $). However, complications must be expected with this transport route – the bus drivers in Moscow usually only speak Russian. Taking the metro or minibuses with luggage is not always comfortable. However, you can save money, especially as a solo traveler.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.
