The 6th largest city in Slovakia , with a population just over 80,000, is an intriguing off-the-beaten-path weekend destination, especially for outdoor enthusiasts. If you’re visiting Bratislava , hop over to Banská Bystrica by car, bus, or train. Here’s how to spend 48 hours in the heart of Slovakia .

Wake up with a creatively crafted cappuccino from trendy Black Coffee in the city center. Then choose a local hiking or skiing trail to enjoy the beautiful outdoors in this region. During winter, Donovaly Park Snow offers 16 ski lifts, a winter fun park for children, ice skating, and even nightly floodlit skiing. In summer, Donovaly’s ski slopes turn into superb hiking trails and the park also offers a toboggan run, mountain biking, and paragliding. Hiking enthusiasts can select one of Donovaly’s many trails or choose to embark on one of several marked hiking trails which start directly in Banská Bystrica’s center—or rent a car to try one of the more challenging treks in the Kremnica mountains, about a half hour away.

If you’re lucky enough to visit on a weekday, the set daily lunch menu at the modern Frais cafe can not be beaten. For just €4.35 (UK£3.80), you’ll receive a well balanced meal that will fill you up. On weekends, choose from freshly prepared risottos, well cooked steaks, or local specialty pork dishes.

After lunch, head to Aqualand . During the summer months, you can dive into the large outdoor pool to swim a few laps, jet down one of the many water slides, or rent a paddle boat to cruise around the lake. Need more to do? What about wakeboarding, tennis, bowling, or mini golf? You can find all of these activities at Aqualand. Evening

Evenings are best spent in Námestie SNP, Banská Bystrica’s main square. Climb to the top of the 16th-century clock tower to watch the sun descend behind the rolling hills, then head back down for a locally sourced meal at Pigis . The seasonal menu offers the best produce from local farms; everything on the menu is sourced from the surrounding region. From hand-crafted burgers and fries, to meatloaf with roast potatoes, your taste buds will be delighted by Pigis’ creative twists on traditional favorites.

Later in the evening, head to the first floor of the Europa Shopping Center to dance the night away at Ministry of Fun , Slovakia’s largest nightclub. The club hosts visiting DJ’s who keep the party going until the early morning hours—and make sure you don’t miss the themed nights, the ‘oldies’ party is one of the best!

You’ll need a coffee after dancing all night at Ministry, so start your day at Leroy Bar and Café. You can get your caffeine fix in style from an AeroPress, Vacuum pot, or the V60 Pour Over Kit while sitting on the outdoor terrace, which offers an excellent people-watching perch over the main square.

After being adequately caffeinated, head to the Museum of the Slovak National Uprising (Museum SNP) to learn about Slovakia’s involvement in World War II. The museum is housed in a strange-looking, concrete, bowl-shaped building and contains a wide variety of artifacts, from guns to uniforms to tanks. Basic explanations are offered in English, and it’s a great chance to learn about the Slovak uprising against the Nazi party in the very city from where the resistance movement was launched in 1944.

For adventure seekers, an afternoon rafting trip down the Hron river is the perfect way to spend time in nature. Navigating fast rapids, fallen trees, and large rocks may be thrilling for some, but stressful for others, so for those who would prefer a calmer approach, the Black Hron Railway is much more relaxing. The old fashioned steam locomotive cars carry visitors through the picturesque Black Hron river valley where you may spot deer, wild boars, or even a bear! Hiking and cycling trails are also available in this area. Or visit the open-air forest museum which educates visitors about the importance of protecting and preserving forests.

Banská Bystrica is the perfect base camp for excursions into the Hron river valley and Slovakia’s Low and High Tatra Mountain ranges which offer an abundance of outdoor activities, much cheaper than the nearby Alps. Evening

Slovakia is famous for its castles, and you can find a fantastically renovated one just 30 minutes away from Banská Bystrica by car (a bit longer by bus or train). Originally built in the 13th century, Vígľaš Castle now serves as a resort, with a four-star hotel, a medieval style restaurant, and wellness center with a sauna, swimming pool, and hot tub. Enjoy a soak and a spa treatment before dressing up for dinner underneath historic arches in the main hall of the castle.

After dinner, you can retire to the Dragon Cigar Bar for a cognac or whiskey with your choice of cigar. You can even choose to stay the night at the Grand Vígľaš in the Dracula Suite, which, amongst other surprises, features hidden stairs inside an ordinary looking wardrobe for those who enjoy a thrill.

Cycling in Central-Slovakia: from mountains to Danube along the Hron river

The tour provided a good cross section of the landscapes, history and culture of Slovakia. About 90% of the tour followed paved roads with the remainder gravel or dirt roads between farm fields or along river dikes. There were a few steep sections, but there were great views to be had once you got to the top. The tour operators did an excellent job of communicating with us. We also enjoyed the hotels that were booked for us.

Eastern Highlights tour was good overall. Hotels ranged from reasonably good to average as did hotel locations. Driver Mike seemed to really know his stuff. Guide Peter kept us well informed but perhaps should carry a flag or some identifying marker when leading the group through large crowds.

The organisation couldn't be faulted. All luggage transfers worked well. Information booklet was very helpful as was the digital route sent before we left home, enabling us to load it onto Strava etc. The route was easy to ride, varied in scenery and surface type. Bikes supplied were suitable for the conditions. Some sections are on main roads, unavoidable as the valley is too narrow for alternative parallel roads. Drivers were always courteous, so traffic was not a problem. Accommodation was excellent and central for the enjoyment of the history. I highly recommend this tour, organised by IdemRad

Banská Bystrica is one of the most beautiful settlements in Slovakia at the foot of the Low Tatras and the Great Fatra . The city is the center of the district and district of the same name - as well as the center of Central Slovakia . Banska Bystrica is located in the middle of Slovakia, close to the Low Tatras and the Fatra National Park.

The city was founded by German tribes in the 12th century. It is first mentioned in writing in 1255 - as Byzterchebana. Then raised IV. Béla ranked the settlement as a city, which was destroyed as a result of the Tartar invasion. Arc. Béla then settled Banská Bystrica with the Germans.

Already in the 15th century, the city walls were protected from outside attacks.

In 1620 Gábor Bethlen was elected king here, although his reign lasted only 1 year. Throughout history, there have been several battles for the city, the Thököly army and later the Rákóczi Kurucs occupied the city.

It was an important military-industrial center during the War of Independence and was not recaptured by the emperors until October 25, 1708. Its fortifications were then gradually demolished, leaving only the Butcher's Bastion and the town tower. His bishopric was founded by Maria Theresa.

Ore has been mined in the area since early times. The first rudimentary mining settlement belonged to the nearby Zvolen Castle.

In the Middle Ages, mining was the city’s main source of income for a long time. During this period, Banská Bystrica was one of the three richest mining towns in Central Slovakia. At the city, two important trade routes also intersected here. Today, about 300 inhabitants live in the town.

#2 Turcek Reservoir

A quiet, peaceful excursion can be made around the Turcek Reservoir. The main task of the reservoir is to collect and supply raw water to the water treatment plant, from which it supplies drinking water to the districts of Žiar nad Hronom, Handlová, and Prievidza.

Its secondary function is to protect the upper river from floods, to ensure its ecologically constant flow throughout the year, and to generate electricity in small hydropower plants, wherever there are gradients and flows.

The reservoir is located at the confluence of the Turček and Ružový streams above the village of Turček. The total area of ​​the pool is 29.5 km2. The average amount of water supplied to the water treatment plant is 15.8 million cubic meters.

The interesting thing about the via Ferrata route is that it contains the longest via Ferrata suspension bridge in Slovakia - 78 meters long. #11 Articular wooden church of Hronsek

Drevený artikulárny kostol Hronsek

South of Banská Bystrica you will find the architectural specialty, the church of Hronsek. The church is located in the previously mentioned village of Hronsek. In 2008, it was even listed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage .

Construction of the church began on October 23, 1725, and was completed in the fall of 1726. The floor plan of the church is 8 m high, 26 m long, and 11 m wide. It has 30 windows and a bell tower.

The castle in Hronsek is the oldest building in the village. The Gothic-Renaissance castle from 1576 was originally owned by the Géczy family and later by the Hungarian Teleky family.

The castle is currently privately owned and cannot be visited, so it can only be admired from the outside.
