Annual 'Tour de Cure' kicks off in Fairport

Fairport, N.Y. — The annual fundraising tour event held by the American Diabetes Association kicked off Thursday evening.

The "Tour de Cure" campaign is underway in Fairport tonight.

This year's theme was back to the 90s.

Speakers explored the progress made since the tour's beginnings in 1991 over a cocktail hour.

Our Karen Edwards emceed the event at Eagle Vale Golf Club .

“If you asked anyone, they all know someone living with diabetes,” said New York Region of the American Diabetes Association Executive Director Jeff Collins. “We want the day we have a cure and don’t have to rely on insulin and other devices to live a happy, healthy life.” He added, “All these people in this room tonight, they make all those things possible, one day, find a cure.”

Diabetes affects one in every 10 Americans.

The campaign will lead up to a bike ride on Saturday, June 8.
