Here we have put together a comprehensive guide to Lefkada to help you experience this magnificent Greek island to its full potential.

A bit about Lefkada

beach lefkada greece

According to a legend, the ancient poet from Lesvos island, Sappho, jumped off cape Lefkada that was to give the island its name to get rid of her love for Faon. This cape is located at the southern end of Lefkada and is now called Lefkata or otherwise Kavos tis Kyra .

The first examples of civilization on the island can be found in the Paleolithic era, giving travelers the opportunity to visit various points of archaeological interest, such as the ruins of the first city of the island, Nirikos, or the god of Apollo, located near the cape, Kavos of Kyra.

woman porto katsiki lefkada

In addition, Lefkada is known for Scorpio, a small islet that was bought in 1963 by Greek shipping mogul Aristotle Onassis. The island is located opposite Nydri, whose inhabitants, in order to honor the Greek magnate who, by buying Skorpios, managed to make Lefkada famous on a global scale, hosting well-known personalities, built a statue in his honor in the village square.

Generally, Lefkada has associated its name with many well-known figures of modern Greek culture, such as Aristotle Valaoritis, Lefkadios Hern, Angelos Sikelianos, and many others.

How to get there

ionian sea g246b1e084 1280

Access to the island of Lefkada is easy in a multitude of ways as it can be reached by car from the Greek mainland, airplane, or ferry boat.

Olympic Airlines operates flights from Eleftherios Venizelos Airport to Aktio Preveza, which is 25 kilometers from Lefkada, throughout the year, with a flight duration of 1 hour and 10 minutes. From there, there is a direct bus connection to KTEL Lefkada.

woman beach lefkada Netfalls Remy Musser

Alternatively, there are daily KTEL routes from Athens, and many other large cities of mainland Greece, to Lefkada.

There is also a route that connects Lefkada from Nydri, via the Lefkada-Kefalonia-Ithaca line, with Kefalonia. At the same time, during the summer, there are routes from Vasiliki to Fiskardo and Frikes.

Your trip to Lefkada can also take place by conventional ferry. It takes about 4-6 hours. The trip duration depends on how many islands your ship will visit in between.

Kyllini - Patras - Lefkada ferry routes are daily all year round, and in the summer, they double depending on the season and demand.

What's more, there is a daily connection with many Greek shipping companies from the Italian ports of Venice, Ancona, Bari, and Printez. The ports of arrival in Greece are Igoumenitsa and Patra.

Last but not least, from Nydri and Vasiliki, there are daily ferries to Meganisi, Kefalonia (Fiskardo), and Ithaca (Frikes). Small tourist boats also make excursions to the nearby islands and amazing beaches.

When to visit the Ionian sea island

beach lefkada island

As with every Greek island, the cold winter months are not ideal for spending exploring the island's beauty.

At the same time, however, the high-season summer months, especially July and August, are filled to the brim with tourists that might taint the authentic Greek island experience you crave.

Therefore, we highly recommend you consider the off-beat option of visiting Lefkada in late spring, early winter, or early autumn. Specifically, from May to mid-June and the whole of September, Lefkada island is at its absolute best.

During those times, you will enjoy the great weather and excellent tourist infrastructure summer offer, and also the tranquility and originality that are most commonly experienced away from the tourist crowds.

Of course, no matter when you choose to visit Lefkada, the island will offer you a trip of a lifetime. The best time to visit it is just a detail, and that's what we're here for: paying attention to the details that may change the whole narrative of your Greek trip!

Also, at a relatively close distance, you can visit the Holy Monastery of Faneromeni, which is located on the road to Agios Nikitas.

One of the best things in the town of Lefkada is an afternoon stroll along the main pedestrian street, where you will find many souvenir shops and traditional products of the island, as well as several cafes and other tourist shops.

Another very touristic part of the city is the so-called "west coast canal" along which you will find many cafes/bars and taverns and generally offers a walk by the lagoon.

Every year, towards the end of the summer, the International Folklore Festival is organized, with groups of dancers from different countries of the world, and one of the highlights that you can watch during those days is the parade of the groups through the streets of the city at the beginning of the festival.

Explore the castle of Agia Mavra for a historical review.

greece lefkada mountain

It is located at the entrance of the island and carries no less than eight centuries of fascinating history. This ancient town is more than worth a visit, both for its imposing presence and for the archaeological importance you will find evident in every corner.

Have a cup of coffee under the plane trees in the square of Karya

Lefkada has many beautiful and picturesque villages, with Karya being a local favorite. The cult-classic traditional seaside village square under the plane trees is the ideal setting to enjoy your morning coffee for hours until you set off for one of the island's world-famous beaches.

Go kite surfing

If you are one of those types of people who hate inactive vacations of absolute relaxation, Lefkada has activities to offer you.

In fact, if you are a relatively experienced kite surfer, the beach of Agios Ioannis is the ideal choice, as it gathers athletes from all over the country due to its beauty and the winds that facilitate this particular sport.

Indulge in a visit to Lefkas Earth Winery

greece lefkada

Four miles from Nydri and its waterfalls towards Sivota harbor lies Lefkas Earth Vineyard — a favorite among wine lovers.

An optional guided tour takes you through the wine-making process with two grape varieties grown here: Vardea and Vertzami. It results in dry, sweet, or white wines of Red and Rose.

In the winery, you will see historic farming and wine production equipment, olive oil production machines, and walk through wine vineyards.

This is a wonderful experience to have, even if you're not a wine lover; after this visit, you are sure to become one!

Marvel at the Lighthouse Of Lefkada

lefkada beach

Built in 1913, the Lighthouse has an ideal position over cap Ducato, offering breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and, on clear days, the Ionian islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca.

The waters surrounding the lighthouse offer excellent scuba diving opportunities since visibility can reach 99 ft in some locations.

Rumors surrounding Cape Ducat suggest it is the spot where ancient Greek poet Sappho, who was born on the island of Lesvos in 630BC, leaped to her death because she could not be together with the love of her life.

Admire the waterfalls Of Nydria

lefkada g24690d3bf 1280

Lefkada is surrounded by mountainous terrain, which is characterized by abundant underground water — one more attribute of the lush and fecund landscape.

This mountain water culminates in creating several waterfalls, from small springs to drink in the traditional villages to the vast river on the fringes of Nydri.

This is the name of this area, which is found in the large Dimossari River. Dimossari is the name of the ancient Greek state where several mills had been built.

Be amazed by the Lefkada Sea Lakes

lefkada gb730b1671 1280

If you drive into Lefkada Town, you will not see many lagoon-like places in the vicinity. They have many diverse migratory birds according to season and also include owls, weasels, and other species they support.

The Sea Lakes is a protected area, but there is plenty of opportunities to wander through the suburbs in search of wildlife - a perfect day trip for nature lovers and a good combination for discovering the delights of Lefkadas city too.

Pay tribute to the Monastery of Saint Nicolas

lefkada sea greece

According to the reports, the Monastery was built after the crusaders visited this island with Saint Nicolas in 1088 AD.

The church started off as a small church in an area seven miles north of Porto Katsiki Beach, close to Lefkada town, the island's capital.

After extensive renovations due to seismic activities, the building was used to house two nuns and is now accessible daily to all visitors.

Taste the mouthwatering local cuisine

lefkada setting

Would it truly be a Greek island if it were not filled with mouthwatering dishes and incredible flavors? if it didn't have a local cuisine that could blow the minds of everyone who visited? No, it wouldn't.

Be sure to try the countless fish taverns on Lefkada island, the wonderful sweet and sour flavors, the havara and pinas , the gnocco , the dried octopus in the oven, and also the local open pie based on the fish.

Keep in mind that ladopita , pasteli, and mandolato are the island's traditional sweets, and make sure not to leave the island before tasting them.

The best beaches in Lefkada, Greece

Porto katsiki beach.

Lefkada porto katsiki beach Calin Stan shutterstock

The famous beach of Porto Katsiki is one of the most popular beaches in Greece, but also in Zakynthos, as its clear turquoise waters combined with the wild, natural landscape attract crowds of people every year. The beach owes its name to the fact that it is a difficult place to reach, to which only goats have easy access.

The view from this south island - a half hour from the capital - is stunning from atop a rugged white hill that tumbles to the ocean making for an incredible backdrop. Because of its image-postcard quality, the Porto Katsiki area is an excellent place for sunbathers, sun worshipers as well as photographers.

The beach is embraced by the cape of Lefkada, the sea is rocky, and the sea water is deep enough, as a result of which, it is blue and crystal clear. In any case, if you visit the island of Lefkada, Porto Katsiki beach is a must-visit. After all, it has been ranked among the six best beaches in the Mediterranean, and not by chance!

lefkada town

Kathisma is a quite popular sandy beach in Lefkada, which is quite organized with many beach bars. Kathisma has white sand and fine pebbles, while the sea becomes suddenly deep.

However, this is what usually makes all beaches, and consequently, Kathisma, have crystal clear waters.

Finally, you should know that on one side of the beach there is a cave, where many people often go to take photos (it's quite an Instagram-friendly place), but if you prefer it, be careful, because the wave can get wild at any moment on the other.

egremni beach lefkada

Egremni is one of the most unique beaches of Lefkada, where cliffs surround the beach, making the landscape ideal for nature lovers.

Of course, the 2015 earthquake knocked down the steps that led to the beach, and so, with their reconstruction, access to Egremnoi beach is by boat.

Egremni is 2 km long, the sand is fine and blond, and the only thing that is certain is that this exotic landscape will make your soul happy.

Vasiliki beach

lefkada

Vasiliki Beach is located in the bay of Vasiliki and is a well-known and popular choice for those who want to have fun with the waves and the strong winds!

Vassiliki Beach is ideal for scuba diving and sailing, while the beach facilities offer the corresponding equipment for rent. The beach does not have sand but rather pebbles, but this does not spoil the otherwise wonderful natural landscape at all. It might even make it more beautiful.

Final Thoughts

greece lefkada greenery

Thanks for this useful guide. Is it possible to combine Athens and Lekfada? How far a drive is it from Athens? Is it better to fly to Thessaloniki or Athens then drive to Lekfada? Looking forward to hear your response.

Hello! The drive to Lefkada from Athens is about 4 hours long and the drive from Thessaloniki to Lefkada is about 4.5 hours long, so the difference is very small. It really depends if you want to visit Athens vs. Thessaloniki!

The Church of the Prophet Elias is located at one of the highest points on Lefkada. The temple itself is peculiar to Greek architecture with all white walls, light-blue domes, and a separate bell. If you are not so interested in local church temple architecture, then you can visit the place for the best views over Lefkada Island.

Lefkada Island Travel Costs

Prices are approximately the same in the whole of Lefkada Island. More expensive are tourist hotspots like Lefkada Town, Nidri, and Vasiliki. Still keep in mind the basic rule that applies everywhere, that in off-grid destinations the prices are a bit cheaper (away from tourist hotspots). But what are the average travel costs in Lefkada?

Food Costs in Restaurants

Usually, when sitting down in Greek restaurants, the first thing is to try out appetizers. That includes traditionally Greek salad, olives with feta cheese, saganaki, tzatziki, and many other options in local cuisine. The average price for appetizers is approximately 5€.

The main Greek dishes like moussaka, domates yemistes, papoutsakia or souvlaki average price stays around 10€. If taking a three-course meal for two in a mid-range restaurant with appetizers, main meal, and sweet, then the average cost stays around 25€. Usually, a 0.5l domestic draught beer costs 4€ on average.

Accommodation Costs

Prices can vary a lot throughout Lefkada Island. You will have a great option to get a room for two from 30€ to 50€. For example in Nikiana prices start at 30€, in Vasiliki from 35€, in Nidri from 40€, in Kalamitsi from 45€, in Lefkada town from 50€ (per night for two people).

NOTE! The prices mentioned above are for peak summer months. Other times of the year, the costs for accommodation in Lefkada are lower.

Lefkada Attractions Costs

As already mentioned, there are plenty of things to do on Lefkada Island. Starting from the water sports like windsurfing and kitesurfing, paddling with a kayak or SUP board, yacht cruising around the island, mountain biking, or taking different courses like wine tasting, local food workshop, or getting more flexible through yoga.

For example, a full-day boat cruise with a meal costs around 60€ to 70€ per person. Another popular activity is a full-day sea kayaking that costs around 70€ per person.

The best way to explore Lefkada Island is by car. If you don’t have your car, then you should look for car rentals. When you can share costs with friends then it´s not that expensive

For a small 4-seater car expect to pay at least 50€ for a day. If you want to have more luxury and space then you should save at least 100€ for a car rental per day.

If you are on a budget and don’t hesitate to travel without air conditioning, then the alternative option would be to rent a scooter and explore the island like a local. The prices stay around 20€ per day.

NOTE! These prices above are for a one day rent. If you rent a car for a longer period, then the average daily price will get lower. For example, a cheaper rental car is available for 50€ per day, but if you take the car for a week, then you pay 40€ per day.

Money saving TIP! To get cheaper prices for rentals, look also outside from Lefkada Island. For example in Paleros (30km away from Lefkada town) rental prices can be half cheaper than in Lefkada. Check car rental prices from Rentalcars .

How to get to Lefkada Island

Lefkada is one of the few islands in Greece that can be reached directly by ground transport by crossing the bridge. Other than ground transport, Lefkada can be reached also by boat and by plane.

Nearest airports

Close-by on the mainland and some of the Ionian Islands are small airports. The closest are in:

  • Preveza – 20 km away from Lefkada town.
  • Kefalonia – approximately 100 km from Lefkada
  • Ioannina – about 170 km from Lefkada
  • Corfu – 180 km from Lefkada

These are not the busiest airports but have some direct connections with a few international airports. The biggest one in Greece is Athens airport, which is 420 km away from Lefkada. Check flights from Kiwi:

Because Lefkada is an island, there are some options to move there by sea. For example, when you take a plane to either island Kefalonia or Corfu, then you can visit Lefkada by boat. The biggest ports to look for the schedules are in the north Lefkada town or on the east Nidri ( check the schedules ).

From Athens

The most convenient way to get to Lefkada from Athens is either by plane to Preveza or on the ground by car/bus. Domestic flights in Greece are pretty expensive, so expect to pay more for a short distance flight.

The cheapest way to get to Lefkada from Athens is by public bus. The 420 km bus ride takes about 4.5 hours. On the high season busses depart from Athens three times: in the morning, noon, and evening. One-way ticket costs about 40 €. If you buy a ticket in advance (online), then you will get a reduced price. Check out schedules and prices from the official bus site .

How to Get Around Lefkada Island?

Lefkada is well connected by public busses with main places and villages. But when you want to see more off-beat places in a faster and more convenient way, then the best way it’s done with your wheels.

How can you move around Lefkada Island?

Public transport in Lefkada Island

The island of Lefkada is well connected with public busses. Bus connections are between places like Lefkada town, Nidri, Vasiliki, Nikiana, Lygia, Vlycho, Karia, Kalamitsi, and some more. For more information and schedules, check out the official bus site .

By car or scooter

If you don’t have a vehicle, renting a car or scooter is pretty cheap. Vehicle rentals are in bigger places like Lefkada town and Nidri. But I recommend renting a car away from Lefkada island, if possible. Prices are much cheaper outside of tourist spots, for example, in Paleros.

Where to stay in Lefkada Island

  • Kalias Hotel – Vasiliki
  • Poros Beach studios – Mikros Gialos
  • Katouna Suites Luxury Boutique Hotel – Lygia
  • Athineon – Nidri
  • Zephyros Rooms And Apartments – Drymon
  • The Secret Boutique Hotel – Lefkada Town
  • Sunrise Hotel Nikiana Lefkada – Nikiana

Best time to visit Lefkada Island

The busiest months are during the summer from June to August, when the weather is sunny and warm. The average temperature stays around 30 degrees Celsius (85 Fahrenheit) during the summer months. As the summer is the peak season for local tourism, then as temperatures, prices also reach their peaks.

The best time for a laid-back vacation in Lefkada Island is during the shoulder season. Before (May to June) or after (September to October) months. Then the weather is still decently warm and the prices are also healthier for your wallet. During the shoulder season, the average temperature stays around 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit).

The rainiest months are in the winter period from November to February. It rains almost half of the month, this is why it’s one of the greenest islands in Greece. The weather is mild as peculiar to the Mediterranean climate and the average temperature stays around 12 to 18 degrees Celsius (53 to 64 Fahrenheit). As the main attractions are related to the beach and sea, and several places (restaurants, taverns) are closed, it’s not probably the best time to visit Lefkada to get a full feeling. If that doesn’t hesitate you, then it’s the least busy and cheapest period of the year.

Lefkada Travel Guide: Travel Tips

Fill your tank – There aren’t so many gas stations over Lefkada Island. You will probably find these close to bigger places. To prevent the situation, where you need to stop your vehicle, because of empty gas, always fill your tank up.

Search cheaper alternatives out of the island in nearby villages – Everything in Lefkada island is a bit more expensive, due it’s the tourist spots. You might find cheaper alternatives to stay a night or rent a car close to Lefkada Town. The beautiful seaside village Paleros is about 30 km away from Lefkada. If the budget is tight, then I would look at that place also.

Bring your water and snacks to the beach – Lefkada is filled with several beautiful beaches and each of them hasn’t a beach bar to cool yourself down. Bringing water to the beach is a good idea for a warm day.

Lefkada – What to do?

Panoramic view of Vlychos Bay and Nydri Town in Lefkada, Ionian Sea Greece

One of the best things to do in Lefkada is of course water sports. Scuba diving , windsurfing , kitesurfing and any kind of beach-related activity is an absolute must in Lefkada. In the marinas and on organized beaches you can charter or rent a boat to sail in the closed sea to the little islets around Lefkada, such as the tiny islet of Scorpios. Scorpios – originally owned by Aristotle Onassis, is set in a sheltered location between Lefkada,  Meganissi  and the Greek mainland.

Lefkada – What to see?

If you need a day or two in the shades, away from the blasting sun on the white beaches, Lefkada hides the most picturesque seaside villages, like Nidri Lefkada and Agios Nikitas Lefkada, absolutely worth a visit with delicious food and various activities. Stroll around the narrow alleys of Lefkada Town, have lunch at one of the traditional taverns to taste the local cuisine, visit the Venetian castle Agia Mavra, the museums and the 18 th  century churches and get to know the culture of the Ionian Islands. Going on day trips around the island you will discover the charming villages of Lefkada, the beautiful Dimosari waterfalls, the lighthouse of Cape Lefkada, the Faneromeni monastery, loved for its beautiful sunsets, and the Melissa Gorge.

Lefkas Town, Lefkada

The Archaeological Museum: Housed in the Municipal Cultural Centre of Lefkas (Lefkada), the majority of the exhibits cover the period from Palaeolithic times up to and including later Roman times. The German archaeologist, Wilhelm Dorpfeld, was responsible for most of these exhibits, found during his excavations in the early 20th century on the island. His theory was that Lefkas (Lefkada) was in fact Homer’s Ithaca, and he developed his theory with methods that set a new standard in archaeology. The museum has exhibits of tools, ceramic and copper jewellery found in ancient tombs. During the summer months the Museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 08.30 – 15.00. Closed Mondays. Admission free.

The Folklore Museum of Music & Literature:  This museum of Lefkas (Lefkada) was founded in 1937 and includes many significant and rare exhibits including a rich collection of objects from the everyday agriculatural and urban life of the local people. These include old traditional costumes, dolls, household utensils, and an olive press. One room has been furnished as a reconstruction of a typical room in a local house.

The Museum of Gramophones: This is near the old town of Lefkas and is a small private museum exhibiting, as its name suggests, a collection of phonographs and gramophones and various other objects relating to the everyday life of the islanders. Records, coins, stamps, embroideries, photographs and traditional musical instruments are some of the items exhibited.

Lefkada – How to get there?

Floating bridge to Lefkada

The most convenient way to reach Lefkada is by car or bus, since Lefkada is linked to the Greek mainland with a bridge. This is also why there is no ferry connection between Lefkada and the mainland. You can reach Lefkada by ferry only from Ithaca , Kefalonia and Meganisi.

Traditional Greek restaurant by the sea, Sivota fishing village, Epirus, Greece

You can arrive by ferry either to the port of Nidri or of Vasiliki. From Vasiliki there is a twice a day connection to Fiskardo and from Nidri boats run once a day to both Fiskardo on Kefallonia and to Frikes on Ithaca. It takes about 1hr to get from Vasiliki to Fiskardo and 2hrs from Nidri to Fiskardo. From the ports to your destination you can take a taxi or rent a car. Another way to reach Lefkada is by intercity bus from Athens, which will take you about 5 hours. You can visit  www.ktelattikis.gr for further information on bus schedules and routes.

Port of Preveza

The island of Lefkada has no airport. The nearest one is Aktion National Airport in Preveza , a beautiful seaside town on the Greek mainland in Epirus. Aktion National Airport receives flights from Corfu and Zakynthos all year round. During summer you can fly to Preveza from many locations around Europe. Please notice that no flights are carried out between Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” and Aktion National Airport. It is easy to reach Lefkada from Preveza by bus or taxi.  Our suggestion: A direct charter flight to Preveza and then a bus (approx. 20 minutes) would be the most convenient solution.

How big is Lefkada?

Lefkada canal, a natural entrance to the island with swamp-like landscape near castle of Agia Mavra, Ionian Sea Greece

Lefkada is 35 km long and 15 km wide. Its highest point is Mount Stavrota, 1158 m high situated at the centre of the island. The east coast of the island has small villages (Lygia, Nikiana and Perigiali), all north of Nidri, the largest town on the island.

The main coastal road from Lefkada to Vasiliki runs through the village, although a bypass has now been completed which skirts the village to the west. There are regular car ferries to Kefalonia, Ithaca and Meganisi.

Island hopping from Lefkada

20 km south of Nidri is the seaside town of Vasiliki, a windsurfing centre. There are ferries to Kefalonia and Ithaca from Vasiliki. South of Vasiliki is Cape Lefkada, where the Greek female poet Sappho allegedly leapt to her death from the 30 m high cliffs. The famous beach of Porto Katsiki is located on the west coast of Lefkada. Lefkada was originally attached to mainland Greece. The Corinthians dug a trench in the 7th century BC on its isthmus.

Weather and climate in Lefkada?

Travel to Lefkada, Greece - Sun, sea and clouds

Like all the other Ionian Islands  Lefkada has a typical Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot and sunny summers and mild winters with a great deal of rainfalls. The climate of Lefkada differs from that of the other Ionian Islands with its thermal winds which get rather strong in some parts of the island. Therefore, Lefkada is famous among windsurfers and kitesurfers.

Porto Katsiki beach, Lefkada, Ionian Sea, Greece

In Lefkada all activities involving wind and water are bound to be a success. In a great crystal-clear blue sea and hot thermal winds during the summer months the island of Lefkada is perfect for windsurfing, kitesurfing, paragliding, scuba diving as well as sailing among the beautiful islets.

Windsurfing and kitesurfing

Kitesurfing and windsurfing in Greece

Windsurfing and kitesurfing are two of the most popular watersports, and the island of Lefkada is one of the most visited destinations in Greece for this. Each year the island attracts huge numbers of visitors and watersports enthusiasts who wish to enjoy the perfect conditions for both windsurfing and kite surfing.

One of the best spots on Lefkada for windsurfing and kitesurfing is the famous and very beautiful beach of Agios Ioannis – Frini. This beach offers perfect conditions for water sports here in Lefkada, as well as being one with exceptionally clean waters and impressive scenery. The thermal winds that blow here during the summer months create the perfect conditions for wind and kitesurfing, and you can watch this amazing spectacle from the beach as you marvel at the colourful surf boards and kites.

Diving in Lefkada

Diving in Zakynthos, Zante, Greece

Clear water, teeming marine life, caves and shipwrecks attract thousands of scuba divers to Greek waters each year. Until recently diving was limited to just a few dive sites to protect the many ancient underwater treasures. Now restrictions have been lifted and many new areas have been opened up for scuba diving. Scuba diving is now allowed in all Greek seas, except where specific prohibitions apply. In response, there has been a sharp rise in Greek diving centres. See links to local diving centres below.

Birdwatching in Lefkada

The two lagoons of Lefkada form unique wildlife sanctuaries for immigrant birds. The birds find a safe shelter inside the rushes, covering almost every part of the ground inside and around the lagoons.

The gulls use the lagoons as a permanent shelter all year round. Loufas, Kormorants, Herons, Swans and many other small birds and fowls frequent as well. In the highlands of Lefkada can be found Hares, Foxes, Ferrets, Partridges, and an array of other birds; Blackbirds, Thrushes, Sparrow hawks, Woodcocks, Crows, Wild pigeons, Larks, Greenfinches, Magpies, Swallows, Wagtails and the famous Greek Hoopoe.

Sailing around Lefkada

Sunset over the mountains of Corfu, seen from Sivota port, Epirus Greece

Ideal for sailing holidays, Lefkas is home to two international sailing centres where you can hire dinghies and drift around the coastline. If you are experienced enough you can hire a yacht or hire a yacht with a skipper and spend the day exploring the coastline and neighbouring islands.

Dolphins around the island of Kalamos

Dolphins in Greece

A relatively stable presence of bottlenose dolphins was observed in the waters surrounding the island of Kalamos. About 25 animals have shown high levels of site fidelity over the past decade, while others use the area only occasionally.

Their flexible feeding habits and opportunistic behaviour may allow them to withstand the effects of overfishing and habitat degradation, but they survive at low densities. In recent years, at least some members of the bottlenose dolphin community living around Kalamos seem to have progressively specialized in foraging around coastal fish farms. They often visit the area around the cages and possibly feed on mullets and other prey attracted by the locally productive area and by the pellets thrown at sea to feed the caged seabreams. No damage to fish farms has beed reported.  Coordinates:  38°37′N 20°55′E

Here is all the Lefkada Island travel advice that you need. We’ve got a list of things to do on Lefkada Island, as well as top Lefkada Island sites and tips for traveling with kids.

Greece Travel Blog_Guide To Lefkada Island

Picture this: Dramatic white cliffs, dazzling turquoise waters, and powdery golden sand contrasting against a lush green background. A gem in the Ionian boasting the prettiest beaches in Greece . That’s what Lefkada is all about.

Popularly known as the Greek Caribbean , Lefkada is a gorgeous Greek island connected to the continent by a floating bridge. Even when this allows for easy access to Lefkada , the island is quiet and low-key.

Lefkada is another breathtaking Greek natural landscape and one of the most scenic shores in Greece , an ideal place for those wanting to discover a completely different Greek destination . Maybe a bit off the beaten path, definitely exotic, and certainly not as popular as the neighboring islands of Corfu or Zakynthos .

Skip Ahead To My Advice Here!

Where Is Lefkada?

Things to do in Lefkada - Porto Katsiki BeachIsland Greece_

The island of Lefkada is located on the Ionian Sea, on the West coast of Greece, north of Ithaka and Kefalonia , Zakynthos, and south of Corfu. Close to Lefkada is the famous Skorpios, an island that Aristotle Onassis and Kalamos once owned. Nearby cities on the continent include Preveza and the coastal resort of Parga. The closest port is Patras.

What Is Lefkada Famous For?

Lefkada is the right destination if you are into water sports. The island has earned a reputation as the place to go for surfing , kite surfing, and windsurfing, as a few bays boast the ideal winds during summer, especially on the beaches of Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki. Other popular activities include snorkeling and diving , while several water sports schools and centers are scattered all over the coast of Lefkada.

Like most of Greece, the island features a gorgeous mountainous landscape, attracting travelers who enjoy mountain biking, trekking, and hiking . Lefkada features small but magnificent forests and unexpected waterfalls , making outdoor activities entertaining and rewarding.

How To Get To Lefkada?

The island is close to the coast of Greece, and since it is connected to the mainland with a causeway, one of the easiest ways to get there is by car or bus. Of course, this means there are no mainland ferry services.

Ferries to Lefkada depart from the nearby islands of Kefalonia and Ithaka, and there is also a tiny boat connection from the nearby island of Meganisi. The island has two ports, Vassiliki and Nidri. There are also ferry connections to Lefkada from the ports of Patras and Kyllini in the Peloponnese .

There are no airports on the island, so you can fly to Aktion National Airport, located in Preveza town, Epirus (about 20 km from Lefkada). The airport receives flights from Zakynthos and Corfu because no flights arrive in Preveza from Athens. Once you’ve arrived at Preveza airport, reaching Lefkada by bus (managed by the local KTEL company), taxi, or renting a car is easy.

If you’re wondering how to get to Lefkada from Athens , you must fly to Corfu, take a connecting flight or Zakynthos, and board a ferry. Alternatively, you can drive from Athens or get there by bus (also managed by Ktel). Lefkada is 378 km from Athens, and the trip is about 4-5 hours.

Moving around: As with many other Greek Islands , renting a car is the best way to move around the island. Instead, if you do not want to drive, you can also move around with local buses and taxis, and since the island is not so big, this won’t affect your budget. You can also access more remote shores by boat.

When Is The Best Time To Visit Lefkada?

Just as with many islands on the Ionian, the best season to discover Lefkada is between late May and early September, as the island has short but mildly cold and rainy winters that make practicing water sports difficult and even dangerous.

Those traveling on a budget can choose to visit in June and September since the central months of July and August are often more expensive for accommodation. Besides, June and September are not as crowded or hot as the peak of the summer, making it perfect for families with small kids who want to avoid intense sun and extreme temperatures.

Top Things To Do In Lefkada

Lefkada is an excellent destination for outdoor lovers and sports enthusiasts. Still, it also allows travelers to experience the tranquil pace of life in small mountain villages or the entertaining opportunities bigger coastal resort towns offer. With its vineyards and olive groves, the island is a paradise for those who love Greek cuisine . Let’s now see all the fantastic things you can do in Lefkada during your vacations.

Explore Lefkada Town

As soon as you get to the island, visiting the main town of Lefkada is a must. Head directly to the gorgeous Ioannou Mela Street, one of the most picturesque places in town with plenty of souvenir shops and nice cafeterias.

Although you might expect to find a traditional Greek settlement, the city is more modern . Different earthquakes hit the island in the 1950s, tearing down Lefkada’s old town; therefore, most constructions were completely rebuilt.

Only a few structures survived the quakes, which should be included in your visit, such as the church of Agios Spyridon, dating back to the seventeenth century.

Check The Archaeological Museum Of Lefkada

Also, this archaeological museum is a small but exciting place to visit in Lefkada Town. It exhibits ancient objects on the island, covering a period ranging from the Palaeolithic to the late Roman Empire.

Visit A Fishing Village

Lefkada Island - Sivota Fishing Village

If you’re into traditional Greek towns and coastal settlements, then head south of Lefkada to explore Vassiliki, a picturesque fishing village built around a calm natural port.

In the area, it’s possible to indulge in delicious fresh fish sitting at one of the waterfront tavernas. In Vassiliki, it’s also possible to explore the local beach or spend some time practicing water sports, especially windsurfing.

Spend Time In A Beautiful Monastery

The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni is a beautiful building to explore in Lefkada. It hosts a very ancient church, and it was built in 1634 on top of a former Greek temple dedicated to the goddess of hunting, Artemis. Inside the monastery, you can check the Ecclesiastical Museum if you are interested in ancient Byzantine icons and religious manuscripts.

Considered the most important religious building on the island, this picturesque monastic complex is located in the village of Frini, on a high position overlooking the main town of Lefkada, therefore offering impressive views of the town, the whole island, and the mainland.

Marvel At The Waterfalls

Waterfalls in Greece - The waterfall of Nidri in Lefkas island Greece

The Nidri waterfalls (also known as Dimosari) are among Greece’s most beautiful waterfalls. The Nidri waterfalls are about 12 meters high and have frigid waters, especially in winter.

They are located inside a gorge on the outskirts of the Nidri village and surrounded by an exuberant green landscape. They are an ideal place to cool off on a hot day.

Discover The Castle Of Agia Mavra

The imposing castle of Agia Mavra stands very close to the bridge that connects Lefkada to the rest of mainland Greece. The remarkable structure has Italian and French influences, dating back to the fourteenth century.

During summer, the castle holds several festivals and celebrations, representing an excellent opportunity to experience the island’s lifestyle and learn more about the local culture. If you happen to visit the area in summer, do not miss attending a festival in this place.

Spot A Lighthouse

An iconic spot on the island is Cape Ducato (also locally known as Lefkatas), which hosts the Lighthouse of Lefkada. The lighthouse stands in a phenomenal location, on top of the Leucadian cliffs on the southernmost point of the island, which is also a famous spot for paragliding.

According to the legend, this is the exact point from where Sappho, an Archaic Greek poetess, leaped to her death after being rejected by her lover Phaon, a mythical boatman from Lesbos .

Diving in Croatia | Travel Croatia Guide

As we have told you, Lefkada is the right Greek destination to practice different sports. Here, you can find a list of the most popular ones and suggestions for places where to practice them.

Paragliding

Travelers love the thrilling adventure of flying over an island from the high cliffs of Lefkada, which lets you experience the views of the magnificent Ionian coast on Kathisma Beach from an entirely different perspective.

Those unfamiliar with the sport also have the opportunity to fly with an instructor in complete safety for about 30-45 minutes, depending on the weather.

Windsurfing

Windsurfing is one of the most popular sports on the island. Lefkada is known for the strong winds that blow in the afternoons in some special locations, especially in summer. Regarding windsurfing, the best place to go is Vassiliki, on the island’s southern side. There are different windsurfing schools as the conditions are suitable for all levels of expertise.

Kite Surfing

This is another popular sport in Lefkada, which can also be practiced in Vassiliki or on the big beach of Agios Ioannis, not far from Lefkada Town. Here, superthermal wind (an average of 15-20 knots) blows steadily during summer. In Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki, it is possible to contact one of the many local centers to join one of their courses or rent the equipment.

Sailing is a magnificent and relaxing activity you can easily enjoy during a trip to Lefkada.

Most sailing trips include swimming in some of the island’s best and most hidden beaches or visiting other small nearby islands that could not be reached with any other alternative transport.

Kayaking And Canoeing

These are two very popular things to do on the island of Lefkada and excellent ways to visit the crystal-blue waters of Rouda Bay on the southeastern coast and the area of Nidri. When booking a kayaking or canoeing experience, guests also have the opportunity to explore some amazing sea caves and try their snorkeling skills in the Ionian Sea .

Scuba Diving

Although not yet as popular as the previously mentioned sports, having a great time in Lefkada is possible if you like scuba diving. The island has several fantastic underwater spots, including caves, old wrecks, and colorful reefs.

To enjoy this activity, contacting a local diving center is always better. Most of them are located in Vassiliki and Nidri and offer courses and trips to different diving sites.

Beaches in lefkada that you must visit.

Where to party in Greece - Egremni beach, Lefkada island, Greece

Unique beaches dot the inspiring coast of Lefkada, some of them unique and among the most beautiful in the Mediterranean. One of the main characteristics common to most beaches on the island is the intense blue color of the water. If you’re eager to experience the best beaches in Lefkada, check out the following spots during your trip.

Porto Katsiki Beach

Located 45 km south of Lefkada Town, Porto Katsiki is undoubtedly the most famous beach on the island, boasting an alluring exotic landscape. Its most characteristic feature is the imposing, abrupt, high cliffs surrounding the gorgeous stretch of sand and pebbles. The best way to reach Porto Katsiki is by boat, although you can also get there by car. It is also a good beach for families, with some quiet areas, despite being such a popular spot. The sea is a gorgeous blue, but it can get deep, even very close to the shore.

Vassiliki Beach

Another beautiful beach to visit, near the picturesque fishing village of the same name, Vassiliki Beach, is more than 35 km from the center of Lefkada Town. The atmosphere is relaxing, with beautiful green hills as a backdrop.

The beach is a mixture of sand and small pebbles and is a bit windy, especially after midday. This makes Vassiliki Beach the local mecca for windsurfing, sailing , and kayaking. The beach is well organized, featuring cafes and tavernas. This is another favorite beach for families with kids.

Agios Nikitas Beach

Located just 10 km from the town of Lefkada, this beach offers the best of the Ionian Sea colors, ranging from sparkling turquoise to deep marine blue in striking contrast against the green cliffs and mountains.

This is a very family-friendly beach in Lefkada. The pebbled shore is not very big, but it is calm and has a relaxing atmosphere. There are organized facilities, including restaurants and snack bars, which can be easily reached from Lefkada Town.

Egremni Beach

An unmissable beach on the island, Egremni is a tranquil beach about 40 km from Lefkada town with breathtaking views and relaxing spots. The area is considered a bit remote, easily reached by boat, which makes it a favorite place for naturism. The coast features very deep waters with strong currents, so those that are not good swimmers should be extra careful. Egremni is wide and spacious, perfect for kids to play and relax; however, the sea can be too deep for little swimmers. Keep this in mind if you’re organizing a visit with the family. The beach is organized with sun loungers for rent and snacks at a local bar.

Kathisma Beach

If you’re looking for a shore to make the family happy, head to Kathisma. This is a long sandy beach surrounded by a mountainous landscape. As we have seen before, the area is a favorite spot for paragliding. The beach offers organized facilities, bars and restaurants, and umbrellas for rent on the sand. Access is relatively easy from Lefkada Town by car or public transport.

Nidri Beach

Another spot you shouldn’t miss on Lefkada Island is Nidri Beach, a few minutes from the village of Nidri. It features an inviting crystal clear sea and a fantastic sandy shore with trees for shade. There are a lot of structures offering water sports centers, sunbeds, umbrellas for rent, cafeterias, and beach bars. This beach is especially popular among families.

Milos Beach

This pretty shore features a virgin sandy beach with a magnetic turquoise sea. Milos is close to the village of Agios Nikitas, from where you can board a sailing boat that takes you to the beach.

Pefkoulia Beach

Despite not being as famous as Porto Katsiki, this is probably the most incredible landscape that you will find on the island, with a deep green sea and clear sand, as well as pine trees along the extreme tips of the beach. Easily accessed by car from the village of Agios Nikitas, Pefkoulia is another family-friendly shore with good organization, also preferred by naturists.

Lefkada With Children

Lefkada is an excellent  place for a family vacation , with small villages and towns offering activities, museums, and entertainment for kids of all ages. Kids are welcome to try adventurous sports, including surfing and windsurfing, and enjoy many swimming opportunities on some of the great beaches around Lefkada’s coast.

The island also has attractive opportunities for outdoor walks and hikes . Kids enjoy discovering the wild beauty of the Nidri waterfalls and walking along the hiking paths, which are worth a stroll for the whole family.

Older kids and teens can experience adrenaline-infused experiences such as kite surfing and paragliding in Kathisma. Even when your children might be too small for such an extreme sport, they will certainly enjoy watching the colorful paragliding wings in the sky.

Children will also be interested in local tours, including visiting the Olive Oil Museum or the local olive groves, which host centennial trees. You can take your visit to explore the ancestral traditions of the island through a visit to the Lefkada Folklore Museum in the village of Karya.

Alternatively, visits to the Archaeological Museum and the Phonograph, Radio, and Traditional Museum in Lefkada Town appeal to every family member.

General information

On the upper right corner of Lefkada island, you will find Lefkada Town , the capital of this Ionian gem and its first meeting point with mainland Greece. Home to over 8600 residents, this town is a picturesque place ideal for a holiday visit. It offers a wide selection of beaches for your everyday bathing and many fun activities for each time of day, such as sightseeing, casual strolling, or even bar-hopping!

Filled with history, Lefkada Town is fit for expeditions centered around museums and churches. However, since it lies several kilometers away from the infamous beaches of Lefkada, like Porto Katsiki and Egremni , renting a vehicle if you don't visit the island with your own car is highly recommended, in order to be able to explore and enjoy the charming island to the fullest!

Brief History

Lefkada was initially a peninsula, but around the 7th century BC, the Corinthians colonized the region and created a strait for defensive purposes, turning it into an island. After that, it was successively ruled by the Romans (around the 2nd century AD), the French (given to a count-member of the Orsini noble family), the Ottoman Turks, and most notably the Venetians. Under Venetian hegemony, Lefkada did not prosper and excel in arts and cultural background, like the rest of the Venetian-ruled Ionians did, but more advanced organizing techniques around ruling were indeed put in place. After 1797, the French were briefly in control of Lefkada, followed by a period in thrall to the Russian-Turkish, and another stint under French rule again in 1807, finally succumbing to the British around 1810, who imposed a strict set of laws, but also reformed Lefkada Town and the rest of the island, mostly regarding public works, bridges and aqueducts. The island of Lefkada was annexed to Greece in 1864, along with the rest of the Ionian islands. After that, Lefkada Town kept being expanded around the agora, even after a destructive earthquake in 1948.

The Santa Mavra Castle , located about 1km away from Lefkada Town, might as well be the first magnificent sight that catches your attention, as you'll see it on your right-hand side if you visit Lefkada by car or by KTEL bus. A trademark of the island's history, this castle served as a defensive anchor back in the 14th century. The iconic wooden bridge, right next to Lefkada Town's entrance, will be another popular visiting choice for anyone interested in the castle's history. Being a large tourist attraction, this fascinating bridge near the town entrance was first constructed back in the early 2000s. Moreover, the Aggelos Sikelianos museum is a must-visit, since it hosts most works by Lefkada's renowned poet, as well as excerpts from his life, such as rare handwritten texts, photographs and voice recordings. It is located right at the center of Lefkada Town, making it really easy to find.  The area is also home to the Archaeological Museum of Lefkada , which boasts four rooms full of exhibits from the Paleolithic up until the Late Roman eras.  Finally, the sea lakes near the island's entrance offer a fascinating view, great for a stroll around the town streets, or a bike ride! It is a home to various species, like ducks, pelicans, seagulls and herons, and also a temporary house to swans during the winter. This beautiful wetland is a part of the NATURA 2000 preservation program.

Kastro and Ammoglossa are the main beach preferences amongst residents and visitors, as they're right next to Santa Mavra castle and really close to Lefkada Town (about 1.5 km away). Kastro, with its sandy shores and shallow waters, is ideal for children, and you may also find some umbrellas and sunbeds to rent, too. Ammoglossa, on the other hand, is less of an organized beach, so you won't find any parasols to use. The shore offers a direct view of the castle, and the shallow waters also make this a family-friendly choice for taking a dip, although you have to consider the possibility of some strong winds. Gira (Gyra) beach is located on the same small peninsula as Ammoglossa and Kastro, only about 3kms west of the previous beaches. It features stunning turquoise-blue waters along its 2-kilometer-long coast filled with sand lilies, the sea is quite shallow, and the cafe (canteen) at the beach offers plenty of refreshments, as well as a parking lot and some sunbeds to rent. Another preferred beach destination near Lefkada Town is Agios Ioannis, just 600 meters south of Gira. The beach of Agios Ioannis is fit for kitesurfing because of the big waves that usually form in the afternoon, usually in the afternoon, therefore you can also spot a lifeguard during summertime. This mesmerizing seashore has also been awarded a cleanliness award, so feel free to bathe in its waters or gaze towards them, while having a good time at one of the nearest cafes, like the one situated inside an old unused windmill.

All of these beaches are really easy to go to and offer plenty of parking space for visitors, but the last two are also approachable on foot through Fryni Town, if you're well prepared for a 40-minute walk with little to no shading.

Restaurants and Nightlife

There's a large number of restaurants in Lefkada Town, most of them along the island's seaside, although there are some close to the city's center. Most taverns and street food canteens are reasonably priced, but you can also find restaurants that offer a deluxe experience if that so happens to fit your exquisite taste. Cafes, on the other hand, are mostly situated towards the inner parts of the town, ranging from big-name coffee brands to local shops. A collection of quality bars and clubs can also be found around Lefkada Town's center, covering a wide spectrum of choices, like a casual bar for a beer or two, or a frenetic night out at a local dance club.

Given the island's popularity, one would expect hotels in Lefkada Town to be pricier, however, the prices seem to have a starting point as low as 35 euros per night if you prefer staying in a simple apartment right outside town. Most inner city hotels carry a price tag that's around 50-70 euros/night, and there's an abundance of lush villas around Fryni, a town no further than 10 mins away by car from Lefkada Town's center.

Ways to Move Around

If you prefer your stay to be centered around Lefkada Town, then you can get away without having to rent a car, because crossing through the entire city takes no more than 15 minutes, making it extremely easy to stroll around throughout your visit. Furthermore, there's a local bus line you can use to get transferred to the beaches mentioned (Lefkada - Kastro - Gira, available Monday through Saturday). On the other hand, if you're looking forward to visiting other parts of Lefkada as well, you can always rent a car , take a taxi or use one of many KTEL buses that can take you anywhere along the island, namely: Lygia, Nikiana, Nidri, Vasiliki, Agios Nikitas, Kathisma Beach, Vlycho, Karya, Kalamitsi, Eglouvi, Poros, Katochori, Syvota, Fterno, Vournika, Syvros, Agios Ilias and Athani. Some of these bus lines are not daily, though, so take a look at the bus schedules in order not to miss your destination!

Lefkada Town offers three large municipal parking lots that are free to the public, two of which are towards the northern side of the city, and the other one is situated south, a bit further away from the center, but closer to the large supermarkets in town.

How to get to Town

Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a bridge, so it is easily accessible by car. There are many different ways to get to Lefkada Town, from any location on the island. Aktion Airport (Preveza) to Lefkada Town: 20 km / 12.4 miles Private transfers: We recommend using an online pre-booked Lefkada transfer service , which provides transfer by taxi, minibus, or private VIP car and arranging a pickup directly from Aktion Airport (Preveza) or your hotel. Alternatively, there’s the option of arranging a pickup by a local driver directly at the following numbers: 0030 690 707 8138, 0030 26450 26555, or 0030 699 477 6364. You can also  book your taxi online .

Car rental:  There's the option of renting a car in Lefkada  and picking it up directly from Aktion Airport (Preveza) or your hotel. Using a rental car allows visitors to discover Lefkada Town and many other places of interest in Lefkada at their own pace. Public transport: The central bus station of the island is located at Lefkada Town. There are bus connections between this bus station and most areas of the island. Consider that time schedules might change according to the season. Check the official timetables here . From Aktion Airport (Preveza) to Lefkada Town:  There’s a bus station outside the airport building. The buses that depart from there take visitors to the main bus station in Lefkada Town. Check the official timetables of the route Airport > Lefkada  here . Tip:  Since buses don’t always stop at every scheduled stop of their itinerary, our advice to visitors is to inform the driver about their final destination so that he makes a stop there.
