Uses For 3 weight Rods

There are several different practical and fun uses for a 3-wt rod. The general rule for most trout fishing setups is to use a 5-weight rod. What many anglers don’t know is that going smaller in rod weight will still safely catch trout up to 20 inches. Much of this has to do with the reel’s drag and tippet strength. There are other more specific uses for 3 weight rods below:

Small streams –   As mentioned above 3 weight rods can catch larger trout, however, the biggest thrill of using a 3-weight rod is to catch smaller fish. Which will feel much larger on this lighter rig. Small streams will most often hold higher populations of smaller fish because of the limited food availability and space.

Smaller streams will also require some different fishing tactics such as roll casts, high sticking, or tight line nymphing. A 3 weight rod is going to prove more successful and productive than a larger bulkier setup.

Tight line nymphing –  Also referred to as Euro-nymphing or Czech nymphing, tight line nymphing relies on “feel” to notice subtle bites over a strike indicator or sight fishing. 3 weight rods are much more sensitive and therefore easier to feel those minor takes. 3 Weight rods also come in a variety of lengths, some of them over 10 feet — making for a great setup when tight line nymphing.

eric-carterspurio-euro-nymph

Backpacking –  When hiking into remote lakes or streams, having a lighter rig can add convenience and efficiency while you’re traveling. When backpacking with a full pack, including fishing gear, even a few ounces can make a difference.

Fish species –  We mentioned above that even small fish can feel like a trophy when using a 3 weight. This lends itself well to other fish species that are naturally small, such as panfish. Most of us probably got our start fishing for these tiny colorful fish probably off the end of a dock somewhere.

As exciting as these fish were to catch as kids, the luster eventually wore off. However, using a lighter more delicate 3 weight brings that thrill and excitement back. Because of how easy panfish is to catch, a 3 weight is great for beginner anglers wanting to get practice catching these little guys before graduating to larger more wily trout.

Overall 3 weight fly rods offer a ton of applications and advantages over other more mainstream fishing weights. We hope this article was helpful in increasing your knowledge of these light rods and that our reviews provided you with insights into your next 3 weight rod purchase.

When looking to buy a fly rod, it is important to consider the length, weight and versatility of the rod.

It is also important to consider your own comfort level when using the rod. Keep all these things in mind and it is tough to go wrong.

  • Settle on the Length – The length of the fly rod will determine how far you can cast your line. A longer fly rod will give you more casting distance, while a shorter fly rod will be more maneuverable.
  • Getting the Right Action – The fly rod actions references its bend and give when you are casting. Fly rods that are fast action will bend more quickly than slow action rods. Fast action rods are better suited for casting large flies, while slow action rods are better suited for finesse fishing.
  • Versatility is Usually Important – You need to know if you are going to be fishing in more generic conditions or if you will be moving around a lot. It is usually best to focus on rods that can work no matter where you fish if you are a beginner or are unsure.
  • The Right Weight – A heavier fly rod will be more powerful and better suited for casting large flies or fishing in windy conditions. A lighter fly rod will be more sensitive and better suited for smaller flies or finesse fishing.
  • What are you Comfortable With – It is important to choose a fly rod that feels comfortable in your hands. Try out different rods at a local tackle shop to find one that feels good in your hands.

TOP 10 Best 3 Weight Fly Rods of 2024

Redington Fly Fishing Rod 376-4 Classic Trout Rod W/Tube 4pc 3WT 7-Foot6

What do you think about Redington?

Oh, only that they are one of the best fly fishing brands on the market ! If you are familiar with some of my other articles, you’ll already know that I think Redington is great. They produce really good gear at an affordable price.

Just like this rod.

At 7’6″, it is the perfect size for fishing small waters. I love that the rod has a moderate action, giving it enough backbone to cast light, delicate flies with enough strength to throw out something slightly bigger like gold head nymphs.

And here are a few nice little touches…

It looks really classy! The rosewood reel insert gives it a really high-quality finish. Pair this up with extras normally found on much more expensive rods, such as alignment dots and titanium stripping rings, and you’ve got an excellent rod for the money.

  • AAA Cork handle.
  • Classic good looks with a nice action.
  • Included rod tube.
  • It isn’t good for casting at range. If you fish anything other than small waters or close in, you might want to look elsewhere.

For the money, a real contender for the best 3 weight fly rod available. It performs well in excess of its price point. One of my favorites!

Moonshine Rod Co. The Drifter Series Fly Rod with Extra Tip

As I said at the start, fly fishing is all about gentle casts and excellent presentation.

If you ain’t getting both of those things… Something is wrong.

But here’s the answer.

For such a low price, this rod is one of the easiest casters on my list. With a medium blank, it loads well, even with a lighter line.

The rod comes in a Cordoba rod tube and breaks down into 4 pieces. It’s supremely portable too, so if you are hiking to the swim, this needs to find a place in your tackle bag.

Moonshine is fast making its name as a higher-end brand. Without the markup and for the money, you’ll get quite a few little extras that make it worthwhile.

I really like the AAA cork handle. This is dense and really comfortable to hold.

And there’s more. You might be looking for a new rod because you broke your last one. Moonshine has the answer. All of their rods come with an extra tip section, so if the unthinkable happens, and you do get a breakage, it won’t ruin your day’s fishing!

  • A great rod for the money.
  • Premium cork handle.
  • Really easy to cast.
  • Some might be put off by Moonshine not being a well-known brand. Don’t be! They are great.

I’m glad I came across this company. They speak my language. High-quality blanks and parts used in the manufacture make this one of the best 3wt fly rods out there. For mid-priced functionality, you’ll find it right here.

Fenwick AETOS Fly Fishing Rod Grey, 6' - 3wt - 4pc

Speaking of quality parts, get this.

Fenwick isn’t perhaps the most famous fly fishing brand out there, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t produce quality.

There’s plenty to love about this rod.

Starting with the blank, you’ll find nanocomposite technology, with fast action, perfect for getting tiny flies and nymphs up to speed and out on the water. This material is lighter and stronger than similarly sized cheaper blanks.

A two-tone anodized aluminum reel seat gives the rod a really appealing look and corrosion-resistant!

And here’s something you really want…

The entire rod is finished in black satin. This is great as it stops the rods flashing and reflecting light when casting towards a particularly wary fish. You’ll also find alignment dots to make sure your rod is perfectly set up before fishing.

The entire rod is topped off with a high-quality AAA cork handle.

  • Lightweight and strong.
  • High quality touches in the reel seat, handle and finish.
  • Great for small nymphs on streams.
  • The rod is 6′. Great for smaller streams. For big fish, you’ll find yourself outgunned.

This is a very location-specific rod. For shallow brooks and for fish up to a couple of lbs, it would be lovely. For bigger fish or heavy conditions, it is worth beefing up your game a little.

When I started my quest to find the best 3wt fly rod, I knew that I’d end up at Orvis at some point.

I can’t say it simpler than this.

Their fishing gear works. It is the best!

The only downside is that they are a premium brand, and this is reflected in the price. All that said, you get what you pay for, and this rod should last as long as you decide to keep it.

Take a look…

At 10′, this rod is absolutely ideal for Euro nymphing. With a light and sensitive blank, you’ll be able to feel every twitch and pull on the line and have the ability to quickly pick the line up with those delicate little takes.

Because of the rod length, this is a great all-rounder in many situations, as you should be able to cast it a little further without losing any of the finesse required with a smaller fly presentation.

It also comes with a Cordoba rod tube and breaks down into 4 parts for ease of transportation.

  • A trusted fly-fishing brand , one of the best in the game.
  • Slightly longer rod, for better casting distance.
  • Really portable and lightweight.
  • The only real downside to this rod is the cost. It is But I’m not sure that, for the money, it is that much better.

Sometimes it pays to stick to what you know. If you want a reliable rod that is ideal for fishing in small to medium-sized waters and will have you covered for several styles, check this out. One of the best 3wt fly rods available!

Redington Strike Euro Czech Nymph Rod, 3106-4 (10'6', 3Wt, 4pc)

This is one of the longest rods on my list. At 10’6″, it is getting towards the upper end of what I would consider appropriate. As a result of its length, it has quite a fast action. This would be a great rod for those anglers with a slow casting tempo.

I’ll be honest.

I think most would find this rod extremely easy to cast with. It picks the line up of the water really quickly and loads really well.

And there’s more.

The sensitive tip section is great for feeling those finicky bites, common when fishing with smaller, lighter nymphs.

I really like the extended handle. It creates a nice balance in the rod and would work really well with a large arbor reel . It is finished with a rounded ‘fighting butt’ (sounds like my ex-wife) that you can brace your forearm against when fighting a monster.

The blank is a little unusual, and I mean this in a good way.

It isn’t coated or painted but left in a ‘raw’ condition. This is great as it prevents reflections which can really spook wary fish.

  • I like the larger handle and fighting butt. It’s a little unusual for a light rod, but it works.
  • This rod is really responsive. The fast action tip makes it perfect for fishing small flies.
  • Bearing in mind it is a Redington-made fly rod, you can get more premium offerings for similar money.

Had this rod been $50 cheaper, I’d have said it was hands down a winner. Don’t get me wrong… It is a nice rod… But you’ll be hard-pressed to choose between this and the Orvis clearwater. They offer very similar performance.

Orvis Recon Fly Rod

Do you want the best of the best?

I don’t normally go this far premium, but if you are looking for your ‘forever rod,’ you will want to look at this.

This. Rod. Is. Stunning!

At first glance, I saw that this was something special. The matte olive and green blank looks different and is the perfect color if you are trying to be all stealthy.

Go for the 3 weight 8’6,” and you’ll have one of the best all-round fly rods out there.

The entire thing just screams quality, from the bold white embossed “Orvis” on the blank to the premium silver snake stripping guides and pewter reel seat. As construction goes, you won’t find any better.

Here’s the thing…

Fly fishing is pretty tiring. You want your rod to be as light as possible. All that casting (and catching) can really tire you out. If this sounds familiar, this could be the one for you.

However…

Just because it is a lightweight fly rod, don’t make the mistake of thinking it isn’t powerful. This rod has plenty of backbone, and you’ll easily be able to pull in something that weighs double figures!

  • The best performer on my list. Strong yet lightweight blank.
  • Excellent control and casting accuracy.
  • I have a saying… A lightweight rod equals a lightweight wallet.
  • If you break it, you’ll cry.

This rod is exemplary in its performance. It is pricey, but I think it is worth it. For long casts, short casts, and everything in between (such as a whopping fish), you’ll be completely covered. Take care of it, and it should last you a lifetime.

St Croix Mojo Trout Fly Rod

If the above has left you a little hot under the collar, but you still want something lightweight and slim, there are other options.

Like this…

The St. Croix Mojo is packed with features, and after a few casts, you’ll wonder why it is so cheap!

Within you’ll find plenty of great features.

The rod is built using a premium high modulus graphite blank with a mid to fast action, perfect for short casts and targeting close-in rises. But, it isn’t all just about the blank.

St. Croix has done all it can to reduce the weight further. This includes Kigan master hand 3D line guides, patented sea guide snake stripper rings, and a super high-quality aluminum reel seat.

You know me…

I like the little things… One feature I really like is the included hook keeper. This is great if you like to move around and are fishing on the go.

The rod is just a fraction under 8′, occupying just the right amount of space to fish in various environments, from getting pinpoint-accurate casts under overhanging bushes to throwing out something weighted into the middle of a fast-flowing river.

  • Considering the features, a great price.
  • Super lightweight.
  • Med-fast action, a good all-round rod.
  • I’m not so sure about the grey finish…

St. Croix rods are not the most well know of brands, but the fish won’t care. It is sometimes too easy to fall into the trap of paying for a name. For sure, this is nice to cast with and has all the attributes of a great rod. Give it a go. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Echo Carbon XL Fly Rod

The Carbon XL is a great all-around fishing rod for anglers of all skill levels. It has a moderate action that makes it ideal for a variety of fishing applications, from dry fly fishing to nymphing to light streamers .

It is constructed with high-quality materials that make it durable and long lasting. The Echo Carbon is also very sensitive, which helps fishermen feel the bite of the fish and set the hook correctly.

The Carbon XL series looks and feels like a rod that should be selling for twice its price!

A perfect rod if you are starting out and want to improve or work on your casting technique. This rod is highly recommended by many professionals for its versatility and performance.

In addition, this rod is very light and well balanced, making it easier to control and cast with accuracy.

  • Versatile for all kinds of fishing.
  • Great rod for learning casting technique.
  • Easy to set hooks and develop a feel for fish.
  • Affordable.
  • Not great for more specialized use.
  • Moderate action that is not ideal for some.

Overall, the Echo Carbon is an excellent choice for relatively new fishermen who are looking to learn by trial and fire on the river doing a lot of casting and getting a feel for fishing.

This rod is a good all around fishing rod. The components are all high quality, and the stripping guides are impressive. The alignment dots make it easy to set up the rod correctly. The four-piece design makes it easy to transport and store.

It has moderate action and provides a smooth, consistent cast. The Redington Classic is perfect for both fresh and saltwater.

The rod also features a durable anodized aluminum reel seat and high-quality cork handle for a comfortable grip.

  • Easy to use and setup.
  • Can use in any type of water.
  • High quality material.
  • Good rod to learn how to cast.
  • Bit slower action.
  • Not as durable.

Overall, the Redington Classic Trout is a great option for regular fishermen who are looking for a durable and affordable fly rod.

It is a versatile and affordable fly rod with solid casting capabilities. The rod is relatively easy to store and maintain as well.

It is an ideal choice for beginner or intermediate anglers .

Hardy Ultralight X Fly Rod

This rod is designed for fishermen who are looking for a high-quality, lightweight option. It feels great in your hand and has an action that is smooth and responsive. The rod is also well balanced and easy to cast.

Expert level fishermen that are serious about performance love the Hardy Ultralite because of the extra capability it gives them.

The Hardy Ultralite is one of the nicest high-end rods on the market. It’s sensitive enough to feel the lightest of bites, yet has the power to handle big fish.

The combination of power with its light weight makes casting, especially longer distances, much easier. The potential to fish on larger bodies of water for big game fish is realized with a rod like this.

  • Super flexible and lightweight.
  • Sensitive to bites, giving fisherman elite feel.
  • A dream to cast.
  • Not for all types of fisherman.
  • Can have difficulty in adverse conditions.
  • Very expensive.

If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line rod that will give you an edge when fishing for big fish, the Hardy Ultralite is a great option.

What to Look for When Buying a 3-Weight Fly Rod?

Are you fully kitted out? A rod is one of the key parts of fishing, alongside a few other essentials .

To get the most out of it, you will want to choose the very best you can find.

Here are some things that you will definitely want to look at.

close-up fly fishing rod and reel with fly box in background

Now, this is variable and will tend to boil down to a key factor…

Namely where you will be using the rod. I have a good rule of thumb. The bigger the water, the longer the rod needs to be. If you are going to be fishing in small streams and lakes, then ideally, you want a shorter rod.

People often talk about fish size. My theory is that it is unlikely you’ll catch a 30lb monster in a tiny stream, so don’t worry too much about that.

Be realistic!

There are a few advantages to a shorter rod:

Short rods are…

  • Easier to cast accurately.
  • Easier to cast around trees and overhanging features.
  • Easier to transport.

The downside is that they can be hard to cast a long way. They also tend not to work well with larger flies.

small grayling caught while fly fishing

Rod action is important but is very much down to individual preference.

With a 3wt fly rod, you are going to want to be quick and responsive. Chances are you are targeting smaller fish, and they tend to be much more rapid and less obvious when they bite.

The ability to react quickly is key.

For that reason, I recommend going for a medium-fast rod action. That will give you enough backbone to fight fish of various sizes. It will also give you versatility in the flies you use and be quick and responsive enough to enable precision casts to quick-rising fish.

Want to see what I mean.

Check out this short video… Man, it makes me excited!

Trout are funny. One minute they are gulping down anything that lands on the surface… The next, they are jumping at their own shadow.

When fly fishing, you need to be covert . Anything that looks unnatural is a bad thing… This includes your brand new fly rod glittering and flashing in the sun.

If possible, go for a rod that doesn’t have a shiny blank. You’ll find that the best quality rods tend to have a matte finish or aren’t painted at all!

It should be obvious that you’ll want a high-quality handle.

I’m going to make it easy.

Here’s what you need to know.

Look for lots of “A’s”! The number of A’s indicated the grade of cork that has been used in producing the handle. Triple-A is the gold standard. If you spot this on a rod, you can be sure that the cork used is the finest around.

As fishing techniques go, fly fishing has to be one of the most dynamic and high-energy. You are constantly casting.

What has this got to do with reel seats?

Well, this is something you simply must look for when choosing a fly rod.

I’m going to say it clearly and simply.

Make sure your rod has a screw-type reel seat. Anything else will lead you to have a bad day. The reel WILL fall off with a friction-based reel seat. It’s a screw seat or nothing for me.

No, I’m not talking about the book I wrote about Las Vegas… (what goes on in Vegas, stays in Vegas).

I’m talking about what is commonly referred to as ‘rod rings’.

Stripping guides come in all shapes and sizes. Unlike with other types of rods, you want them to be as simple as possible on a fly rod.

My favorite kind is actually the snake-type stripping guides. These offer minimal contact with the line. As a result, you can expect to see an increased casting distance.

Got questions? I don’t blame you! It can all be a little daunting. If you are brand new to fly fishing, why not check out my guide here on the best beginner fly rods ? Here are some things that I get asked about all the time.

The fly rod weight is all encompassing for the size and weight of a given rod. A smaller number means that the rod is lighter and usually a little weaker. By definition with bigger weights it means that the rod is strong and heavier.

You can find a wide range of weighted rods on the market, 3, 5, and 8 weights are the most prevalent but you can find anything from size 2-14 if you want to.

The most common weight out there is a 5 weight because it works in almost any fishing situation you could find yourself in. 3 weights tend to be used by more beginner type fisherman that want an easier casting rod and don’t need the same performance.

You’ll get guys saying that you can only catch little fish on a 3wt fly rod.

Simply. They are wrong.

If you choose a good quality rod and pair it with a decent fly line that matches the rod’s weight, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to handle bigger species. Up to early double figures.

But a word to the wise. While fishing with lighter rods does give you more sport, unless you are planning to kill your catch, it is kinder to use a heavier setup. Fish released after a prolonged fight tend not to survive!

For me, that’s a tough call. From my list above, if you want to spend top dollar, I’d say that you’ll never go wrong with Orvis.

But we don’t all want to spend top dollar on a rod…

In that case, your next port of call would be a high-quality budget brand like Redington, with a company like the Moonshine Rod Co as a very close second… I admire their humor as well as their rods…

The shorter models are perfect for tight quarters, while the longer models are ideal for European nymphing. The classic length model is beloved by dry fly purists.

Each of the Recon models provides a stellar fishing experience, so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. And because we use only the highest quality materials, you can be sure that your Recon will provide years of enjoyment.

3 weight rods really shine when used in small streams and still waters. They are the ideal rod for marrying up with tiny flies.

You won’t be needing to cast far with a 3wt rod. Mostly you’ll be sight fishing and targeting specific fish.

The most common recommendation from fly fishermen would be a 9 inch rod for a 5-weight. Whether you are fishing ponds, streams or larger lakes this is the most versatile option you are likely to find.

The length lets you have adequate reach and the weight puts you in the game for all sizes of trout. The rod will also hold up for casting in a wide variety of difficult conditions if that becomes necessary.

The only downside is that it is hard to find a rod that shines in absolutely all areas. They will be ‘ok’ in all areas, but it might be worth considering a custom solution in a lighter or shorter rod for extreme ends of the scale.

When choosing a fly rod , there are several factors to consider. The type of water you’ll be fishing, the distance of your casts, and the weather conditions you usually will be fishing in, all should play a role in determining the appropriate rod weight.

The basic rules are that you want a heavier weighted rod when you are fishing in bigger bodies of water with heavier flies of larger fish and in more adverse weather conditions.

Using the best 3 weight fly rods is one of the most interesting ways to fish. Precision casting to an unsuspecting fish certainly gets your pulse racing! It’s all about presentation!

If you are looking for a new setup, I’ve got plenty of fly fishing info. I even offer budget suggestions and combination packages to get you out fishing that much sooner.

What’s your favorite rod weight to use? Got any tips? Let me know in the comments!

It’s clear that no detail has been overlooked here, from the precise alignment dots to the smooth stripping guides and the feel of the cork. No one will know that you’re fishing with a ‘budget rod’ when you arrive at the lake with this beauty.

You’ll love the slow action feel of this one, and your casts will be smooth and accurate with a natural presentation. For this price, you simply can’t beat the Maxcatch Premier IM8 . It’s definitely a strong contender if you’re on a budget although don’t expect award winning performance!

Why You Should Try Out a 3 Weight Fly Rod

If you haven’t tried a light rod before or you’re not feeling confident about using different fishing rods, we think you’re missing out. When it comes to using the right weights to fish with, you want to consider where you’ll be fishing, and what you’re hoping to catch.

3 weight fly rods are perfect for ultralight fly fishing and are accurate at a shorter casting distance, but they’re also lightweight and pack down for easy travelling. If you like fishing on smaller rivers and streams, slower action rods or using tiny dry flies, it just makes sense to have a good piece of kit to take out with you.

In recent years, manufacturers have really upped their game and designed some stellar rods that are much more impressive than those of previous decades. You’ll be pleased to hear that there are lots of great ones that can be bought on a budget. You don’t have to spend $500 or more to get a decent rod – many come in at around $100-200 or less without losing out (too much) on the performance.

If you’re still not convinced about going for a lighter wt, check out this lively comparison on 3wt vs. 5wt rods! Although 5 weight rods can be great workhorses, in some situations they just can’t compare to a lighter feel. You’ll be impressed by how much more exciting smaller fish can be with your ultralight gear.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best 3wt Fly Rod

Raphael Dume

Fly fishing is a beautiful and challenging sport that requires precision, skill, and the right equipment. One of the most critical pieces of equipment for any fly angler is the fly rod. When it comes to light fly fishing, a 3wt fly rod is an excellent choice for those who enjoy the delicate presentation and the thrill of catching smaller fish in freshwater streams and rivers. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the best 3wt fly rods, helping you make an informed decision when choosing the best one for your needs.

Table of Contents

Understanding 3wt Fly Rods

Before we delve into the best 3wt fly rods on the market, it’s essential to understand what a 3wt fly rod is and why it’s a popular choice among fly anglers.

What is a 3wt Fly Rod?

The “3wt” in 3wt fly rod stands for “3 weight,” which refers to the rod’s line weight designation. In fly fishing, the line weight is a crucial factor in determining the size and type of fish you can target effectively. A 3wt fly rod is designed to cast a 3-weight fly line, which is relatively lightweight. This makes it an ideal choice for fishing in small to medium-sized streams and rivers where precision casting is essential.

Why Choose a 3wt Fly Rod?

There are several reasons why anglers opt for a 3wt fly rod:

  • Delicate Presentations: A 3wt fly rod allows for delicate and precise presentations, making it perfect for targeting skittish trout in clear, calm waters.
  • Lightweight and Agile: These rods are incredibly lightweight and agile, making them easy to carry and maneuver in tight spaces with overhanging vegetation.
  • Challenging and Fun: Fishing with a 3wt fly rod can be more challenging and exciting, as it requires finesse and accuracy in casting and playing fish.
  • Small to Medium-sized Fish: While you can catch larger fish with a 3wt rod, it excels at handling smaller species, making it a favorite among trout anglers.

Now that we understand the basics of 3wt fly rods let’s dive into the world of options available to you.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a 3wt Fly Rod

Selecting the best 3wt fly rod requires careful consideration of various factors to ensure it meets your specific needs and preferences. Here are the essential factors to keep in mind:

1. Rod Length

The length of your fly rod plays a crucial role in casting accuracy and overall performance. For 3wt fly rods, typical lengths range from 7 to 8.5 feet. Shorter rods are ideal for small, confined spaces, while longer ones offer better line control and casting distance. Consider the type of water you’ll be fishing in when choosing the length of your 3wt fly rod.

Fly rod action refers to how much the rod bends during casting and how quickly it recovers to its original position. The three primary action types are:

  • Fast Action: These rods are stiff and provide excellent casting distance and accuracy. They’re suitable for experienced anglers who need precision in their presentations.
  • Medium Action: Medium-action rods offer a balance between casting distance and presentation. They are versatile and suitable for various fishing conditions.
  • Slow Action: Slow-action rods bend deeply, offering a gentle and delicate presentation. They are ideal for short-distance casts and small streams.

The choice of action depends on your casting style, fishing environment, and personal preference.

3. Material and Construction

Fly rods are typically made from one of three materials: graphite, fiberglass, or bamboo. Graphite rods are the most common due to their lightweight and versatile nature. They offer excellent sensitivity and are suitable for most fishing situations. Fiberglass rods are more flexible and forgiving, making them a great choice for beginners or those seeking a slower action. Bamboo rods are a niche option appreciated for their craftsmanship and tradition.

The weight of the fly rod itself is a consideration, as it can affect your comfort during long fishing sessions. Lighter rods are generally more comfortable to hold for extended periods. However, keep in mind that the overall weight of your setup also includes the reel, line, and other accessories.

3wt fly rods come in a wide range of prices, from budget-friendly options to high-end, premium models. Determine your budget and look for a rod that offers the best combination of features and performance within your price range. Remember that a more expensive rod may provide better build quality and performance, but it’s essential to find a balance between your budget and your fishing needs.

6. Brand and Warranty

Consider purchasing a fly rod from a reputable manufacturer known for their quality and customer support. Many top brands offer warranties that cover manufacturing defects, providing peace of mind in case of unexpected issues with your rod.

Now that we’ve covered the essential factors to consider, let’s explore some of the best 3wt fly rods available in the market:

The Materials Epic fly rods are made to exacting standards using either a proprietary S2-glass composite or a multi modulus, helical constructed low resign Carbon Fibre system. Our Carbon Fibre blanks are light, crisp and at the very forefront of fly rod design.

Each material features a unidirectional fibre layup which aligns fibers longitudinally along the blank. The result is an incredibly strong, light and powerful tube with a crisp, precise response. This recipe, rolled to our Epic tapers combine silky smooth easy loading with trophy pulling power.

Regardless of the material you decide to choose, you have before you what we sincerely believe is the very best fly rod produced.

All jargon aside, these fly rods are just fantastic to cast, they look incredible, are super tough, and are a hell of a lot of fun to fish with.

These are the smoothest, most beautiful fly rods you’ll ever cast.  Purposefully designed and exquisitely handcrafted using only the very best components available.

Every grip is of premium FLOR grade Portuguese cork traced from the source; a more perfect grip you will not find anywhere.

Light in the hand and an absolute pleasure to cast; There is simply no better fly rod made - and  your absolute delight is guaranteed.

Better Components Each handcrafted Epic fly rod boasts the very best components available:

100%  Carbon Construction. (Carbon Fibre / Graphite fly rods for our USA freinds) The carbon helix core boasts true 100% carbon construction. These blanks contain no scrim.

FastGlass II ™ All Epic "Glass" rods are produced from industry-leading 8 micron Unidirectional S-2 Glass. This next-generation fiber is specifically engineered for fly rod production and features 8 micron fibers developed and produced in the USA. These fibres are almost half the diameter of other unidirectional materials, resulting in tighter, more precise and stronger fly rods.

Built Epic Tough Epic glass rods are incredibly tough. Our S2 FastGlass II has a far higher strength-to-weight ratio than Carbon fibre (graphite) rods. Epic FastGlass rods can endure more acute and severe bends than the equivalent Carbon fibre or even regular S2 glass, tip sections are stronger and far less susceptible to breakages due to high-sticking and problematic rod angles when pulling against load.

100% Uni-directional material - Non Woven. Super light-weight construction and superior strength. Non woven Uni-directional material is up to 40% stronger than traditional woven material commonly used by fly rod manufacturers.  A non woven fiber can achieve 100% of its tensile and compressive loading.  Unidirectional material affords super lightweight construction and superior strength.

100% Carbon Helix Core A 100% helical core forms the basis for hoop strength and fibre support in the zero/longitudinal axis and does away with traditional scrim based construction.

Graphene & Silica-nano technology. Super Low Resin Systems. Utilising materials with resin content up to 30% less than conventional materials, Epic G series blanks are lighter and stronger. Low resin materials help increase bending limits & overall response.

Multi Carbon Construction (Multi modulus). Using only the highest quality fabrics from the USA, Japan and Korea, up to five different types of carbon are used in each blank. Each type is placed at various parts of the blank to optimize strength and weight. Ultra-high  modulus fibre boasts the highest tensile and compressive strength of any fibre in its class.

Internal High Strength Ferrule. A high strength internal ferrule is placed at each join to provide superior crush and split resistance.

Target Zero Fibre Alignment. Fibre alignment along the length of any blank is critical. Even the smallest deviation in fibre alignment from the axis of load will greatly reduce the strength of the blank.

Born & Bred in New Zealand We reckon New Zealand is the perfect test laboratory to develop great fly rods.

And in true Kiwi fashion we favor solid design, original thinking and good old fashioned service over mass production, fashion and fickle trends.

We strive to be the very best, not the cheapest nor the biggest - and we pride ourselves on astounding customer service.

Epic Beginnings "Epic was born out of two frustrations I experienced in fly fishing:

My students were coming to fly casting classes with new fly rods so stiff and so lifeless they were extremely difficult to cast - even for me!  _ Probably great rods if you wanted to bust out a 100 foot cast on a football field, but a total impairment when used as practical fly fishing tools.

The second big driver was my own fishing experience. Like all fly anglers, I wanted to be a better fly fisherman, become a better caster and ultimately catch more fish. And like all anglers, I’d grown through experimentation and improvement on just about every aspect of the sport. Rods, lines, leaders, my casting - and thousands of flies.

Eventually I started fish lighter fly rods and lighter lines in order to make better presentations. You know, to get more feeling, better casts and better response.

While the lighter rods had better feeling for sure, I was regularly breaking tips by point loading when netting big trout - Yep, we have some fairly big trout here in New Zealand!

And so the journey began . A journey to  "build a better fly rod”  - that phrase still sits on the whiteboard above my desk to this day.

Many materials were tested and many tapers developed in the quest to leave behind the stiff lifeless rods I was so used to using. My first fly rod that went into production, the Epic 580, went through 15 iterations before we settled on a taper that could truly be called  Epic  - and that's how the brand began.

Our tapers are powerful, but not stiff. Incredibly tough, but impart wonderfull responsiveness and feedback. And test, they can still bust out those long casts

I know that you’ll feel and appreciate the Epic difference . You’ll be making better casts, making tighter loops, better presentations, and ultimately catching more fish. And if you don’t, we’ll happily take back the fly rod you are looking at"

3 Weight Fly Rods Review

Best 3 Weight Combos

Review of the best 3 wt fly rods

What are the Most Important Features of 3 Weight Fly Rods?

Action and strength of 3 wt fly rods.

The action of a rod refers to how much it flexes when you cast or when you have a catch on the line . Depending on what the action for a rod is, it can be stiff or flexible. Three weights have a quick or moderately strong action. The term “power” refers to the amount of force required to flex and bend the rod. When the power is reduced, less pressure is required. Usually, three-weight rods are low-power and flex quickly with little pressure.

Weight, Size, and Alignment

When used in conjunction with fly rods, the term ‘weight’ relates to the ability or density of the line used on that rod. Three weight rods are intended for use with light flies and can accommodate fly line weights 1-3.  While the term “weight” does not correspond to the rod’s actual weight, it is worth noting that the majority of 3-weight rods are relatively light. When evaluating the length of your rod, be careful to select a reel that is proportional to the rod’s weight. With the reel connected, a properly adjusted rod will rest on your finger while lying one inch below the top of the grip.

Appearance and Usability

Fly fishing is an energetic sport, and if your grip is uncomfortable, you will not enjoy it as much. A strong rod feel may also translate into improved outcomes, as the more receptive rod enables more precision on the water. Prioritize comfort before appearance, as you can always tweak it afterwards to fit your taste!

Cost and Warranty Information

You can locate a rod to meet your demands at nearly any price range, so avoid settling for one you are unsure about. Along with the pricing, be careful to inquire about the rod’s warranty. Numerous businesses provide complete lifetime warranties, which may add an additional layer of protection and assurance to your purchase.

Echo Carbon XL (7ft6in #3)

Echo Carbon XL Fly Rod 3 weight

Key features:

– Small stream rod

– Comes with a cordura tube

Why we picked it:

The Echo Carbon XL is an excellent entry level to intermediate fly rod. While its range and precision casting skills seem to be ordinary, the grip is considerably above what is typically found on the market. It’s difficult to describe, but the Echo Carbon XL gives you the impression that you’re a greater caster than you actually are throughout many casts. It’s impressive to achieve this sensation with a product at this price range.

Therefore, who is the Echo Carbon most suited for? The Echo Carbon XL is an excellent choice for the majority of starting fly fishermen. While it is not a real fast-action rod, it is quick enough that you won’t feel as if you had to wait for it to function.

Furthermore, I found the Echo Carbon XL provides sufficient casting input to assist a fly fisher in determining when the rod is set and suitable to let the line shoot. It seems to occur somewhat quicker than the average medium-fast action rod in this price range. The final result is a very suitable, adaptable rod that can be cast effectively by the majority of anglers. If you’re looking for a high quality 3 wt fly rod without spending a fortune, the Echo Carbon XL is a must-have. At this price, the Carbon XL is a no-brainer.

  • Great value for money
  • Has the feel of a more pricey product
  • Classic design
  • Lacks a bit of stamina on longer casts

Fenwick Aetos

FENWICK AETOS FLY ROD

– Ideal for small waters at 7ft

– Fast action with anodised aluminum reel seat

– Limited lifetime warranty

Fenwick’s entry-level all-purpose freshwater fly rod is the Aetos. The Fenwick Aetos is accommodating, caster-friendly, and very adaptable for different casting styles. Fenwick has created a rod that performs much above its price range.

We found the Fenwick Aetos to be very precise up to a range of 60 feet. The AETOS blank is optimized for anglers with a quick casting motion. The rod’s rapid action design provides enough reserve power and enhanced line speeds.

The Fenwick Aetos blank has a smooth tip for superior quality over short distances and still performs decently at longer distances. The Aetos is an excellent choice if you are just getting started and live in a place where you’ll mostly be fishing small streams – tight quarters with limited room to cast is where this rod shines.

  • Enough power to cast even smaller streamers
  • Very elegant and subtle due to the dark color scheme
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • This is a specialty rod only made for small streams and creeks

Redington Classic Trout

Redington Classic Trout 3 wt 8ft 6in

– Traditional look and feel with rosewood reel seat

– Moderate action for precise casts

– Lifetime warranty for original owner

The Redington Classic Trout is an economically priced moderate action 3 weight fly rod for trout. It is ideal for spring creeks and tiny streams, and maybe even some drift boat fishing in bigger tail water areas.

The Redington Classic Trout’s medium action makes precise presentations at close distance a delight, and the CT’s utilitarian components elevate it to the top of the dry fly rod market. We found everything on the rod to feel more like a mid-range rod than a low-budget rod – which it is considering the price tag. The rod promotes a more deliberate casting stroke and is equipped with real mid-flex technology.

The mild blank action preserves delicate tippets and assists with carefully landing tiny flies in front of rising fish. The blank is finished in a rich clay brown that complements both the rod tube and the reel seat. If you’re a beginner dry fly fisherman seeking to step up your game, the Redington Classic Trout is one of the better 3 weight fly rod options available at this price point.

  • An entry level rod (price wise) that you can fish for years to come
  • Lifetime warranty is a place for this price range
  • Classic design that never goes out of style
  • Medium action requires a bit more skill than the Fenwick or Echo

Orvis Superfine Glass (3wt 7ft6in)

Orvis Superfine Glass (3wt 7ft6in) - One of the best fly rods 3 wt

– 3 piece glass fly rod

– Beautiful, minimalistic reel seat

– Highend look and feel with aluminum rod tube

The Orvis Superfine Glass was designed for primitive woodlands and cold mountain streams, for little streams and indigenous brook trout. The glass rod has a slow action and flexes all the way to the grip. This makes it a good choice if you want to fish light tippets as the flexibility of the glass provides an extra bit of buffer when playing big fish.

The Orvis Superfine Glass’ incredibly accommodating nature and speed combine to create a delicate little rod. However, be aware that glass feels completely different than fibreglass rods. It has a slower action (like a bamboo) rod that needs some time to master. But once you’ve adapted to the slower speed of the blank, a fibreglass fly rod can be a delight to cast and play fish on.

  • A rod for the individualist who is looking for something special
  • Works well with fine tippets
  • Excellent dry fly rod for smaller streams
  • Needs some getting used to in terms of timing – not for beginners

You can fish tiny streams and rivers using the #1 – #3. The #4, #5 and #6 of the Redington Butter Stick make for excellent trout rods and the #8 enables you to target bigger species such as pike or bass for example.

Built on Redington’s Heritage Taper, the Redington Butter Stick is a great modern glass rod with a slow action and deep flex. Comes with the excellent Redington lifetime warranty.

Moonshine Rod Co. The Epiphany Series

Moonshine Rod Co. The Epiphany Series

– 5 piece rod – great for traveling

– Comes with a fighting butt

– Ideal rod for euro nymphing

Moonshine has successfully garnered a large following that has made them a favorite with anglers. The Epiphany series was first released in 2017. Since then the nymphing rod has been redesigned to become even better than before.

The nymph fly rod is perfectly balanced and is very sensitive. We found the 10’6″ to be a little short in case you need a little reach. On the flip side that means you can use it for streamer fishing as well. This increases the versatility. Moonshine have been able to reduce the weight significantly by making the blank lighter. By using a titanium frame stripping guide, the line sag is reduced. Comes with a lifetime warranty.

  • Alignment dots make it easy to rig
  • Versatile rod for nymphing and streamer fishing
  • Comes with an extra tip section in case you break one
  • On the shorter end if you’re looking for a rod specifically for euro nymphing

Hardy Ultralite

Hardy Ultralite

– 8ft 3weight 4pcs

– Ultimate lightweight design feature the best components in the market

– Comes with an aluminum rod tube

Hardy has been in the game for 150 years and still makes some of the best fly rods on the planet. Their Hardy Ultralite ( read our in-depth review here ) is no exception to this rule and a great choice if you are looking for a premium rod to fish small streams and creeks. We got our hands on the #3 which measures only 8ft, making it the right choice for tight quarters.

As the successor the brand’s hugely popular Zephrus series, the Hardy Ultralite features the Sintrix NSX technology making it one of the lightest 3 wt fly rods on the market. Everything on this rod is top notch and the lifetime warranty is the icing on the cake.

  • Incredibly lightweight
  • Beautiful, classic green blank design
  • Lifetime warranty for the original owner
  • Only an experienced angler will be able to take advantage of the rod’s full potential

Douglas Upstream (3 wt fly rod 8ft 6pc)

Douglas Upstream 3 weight fly rod

– 6-piece rod for traveling

– Aluminum rod tube for ultimate protection

– Full cork grip

The Douglas Upstream is a small water and small fish rod. The unusual cane-shaped blank and complete cork reel seat provide an old-fashioned feel to this product. Yet, under its exterior shell is cutting-edge graphite technology that elevates the Upstream to the top of the small water fly rods.

The Douglas Upstream is very accurate at short distances (perfect for small creeks) and is excellent for protecting light tippets. On shallow streams, little dry flies turn smoothly and softly to trick cautious fish with the Upstream.

Although the rod resembles traditional cane rods, the graphite rod blank is highly efficient on the water. The blank has a somewhat slow action, which protects delicate tippets and maximizes performance within 30 feet. This is a true little water rod designed for the most deft presentations. If you’re in the market for a new slow-action short-range dry fly rod, the Upstream is a great option.

  • Highly packable
  • Delicate presentations
  • Original owner lifetime warranty
  • Medium-slow action will take some getting used to if you make the switch from a fast action rod

Sage Trout Spey G5 3 weight (11ft)

Sage Trout Spey

– Two handed rod for trout spey style fishing

– A lot power and backbone to cast even bigger streamers or intruder flies

– Fuji stripping guides for utmost line shooting performance

The Sage Trout Spey is designed to be used for a variety of spey applications on wider trout streams. Whether you’re trying to swing soft hackles on floating lines throughout evening hour hatches or trying to cast streamers on Skagit heads, the G5 can do it all. I’ve become a big fan of the trout spey fishing and use it to pursue steelhead or big rainbows on wider rivers.

Being headquartered in Burbank Island, Washington, Sage has some experience building spey rods. They’ve done a good job with the G5 as it has enough backbone to make long casts and yet delivers feedback to the experienced fly angler. I am a big fan of the more traditional blank design with brown and olive colouring. The G5 is the right choice if you are looking for a rod that will deliver effortless casts for all-day fishing in colder conditions.

  • Excellent backbone to deliver even the longest casts
  • Traditional, subtle design
  • Hard-chromed snake guides for ultimate line shooting performance
  • Only for experienced fly anglers

OPST Micro Skagit Trout Spey 9’9” 3wt

OPST Micro Skagit Trout Spey 10’4” 5wt

– Short trout spey rod

– Powerful rod with great feedback capa

The OPST Micro Skagit two-handed rods have been designed to work with single-handed casts and double-handed casts as well. Whether you are on foot, finding your way through small and medium rivers, or fishing off a boat, the hybrid rod should be a part of your arsenal. The rod took five years to develop and is proof of Ed Ward’s vision.

The handles of the OPST Micro Skagit Trout Spey are cigar-styled and offer a good grip on the rod. Its shorter length makes it perfect for overhead casting as well. This allows you to swing with a Skagit head, or opt for a dry fly line. The medium-fast action trout spey rod is perfect for trout and even smaller fish. Make sure to read our in depth review of this fantastic rod . Works beautifully with the OPST integrated shooting heads.

  • Highly versatile rod different casting styles
  • Shorter length helps in tight quarters
  • Works beautifully with the OPST integrated shooting heads
  • Compared to the Sage G5, the OPST has a bit more difficult delivering the longest cast because of its shorter length

Cortland Competition MKII

Cortland Competition MKII Nymph

– Nymph fly rod in 10’6″ or 11′

– Medium-fast action

– Cordura rod tube

For most fly fishermen and women the name “Cortland” is most likely synonymous with fly lines. They have been in the business for decades and produce some of the finest fly lines money can buy. What less people know is that Cortland has become a powerful source in the field of Euro nymphing , thanks to their Cortland Competition MKII Nymph . Made from the highest quality carbon fibres, Cortland’s blanks are known to be some of the most sensitive and lightweight in the game – and when it comes to Euro nymphing that’s what matters most since it helps you detect the most subtle of takes.

As a #3, the Cortland Competition MKII Nymph comes in either 10’6″ or 11′. The 10’6″ is more of an allrounder, whereas the 11′ gives you that little bit of extra reach for our favorite riffle. Both are equipped with hard chrome stripping guides that are the perfect setup to fish a nymphing rig. The blank color is kept in a subtle grey which helps reduce reflections when the sun’s out. You can tell that Cortland made sure to not forget any important aspect to help you catch more fish.

My verdict : The Cortland Competition MKII Nymph is one of the finest rods you can get if you want to enter the world of (Euro) nymphing. It’s highly sensitive and has a beautiful medium-fast action. To round the package off, Cortland offers a lifetime guarantee for the original owner.

  • Superb sensitivity
  • Subtle grey blank color for stealth mode
  • It takes some time to make use of the Cortland’s extreme sensitivity. Once you’ve got it figured out though, you won’t want to look back

TFO Drift

– 3 weight fly rod with an adjustable length of 9′ to 12’3″

– Suited for different techniques such as nymph and micro spey

– Protective case

Now here’s a real multi talent: the TFO Drift. The man behind TFO is legendary fly angler Lefty Kreh. Hence it does not come as a surprise that this rod combines the benefits of different techniques in one rod. The TFO Drift is a 3 weight rod that can be used in different fishing scenarios depending on how you put it together. Out of the box it’s a pretty classic 9′ rod. If you add one or two sections you can turn it into a dedicated nymphing rod to fish any style you wish from French, Czech or Polish.

But that’s not all. If you are fishing a bigger river where you need to make longer casts to reach the fish, no problem, add another section (and the 3″ lower cork grip) to turn the TFO Drift into a micro spey rod of 12’3′. Wow – that’s basically three rods in one. And I have to say, this rod fishes well in all scenarios. Sometimes products that want to do it all end up not doing anything well. But the TFO Drift really performed well during our test.

My verdict : The TFO Drift is the 3 weight rod that can do it all: classic setup, nymphing and trout spey, all in one rod. If you’re looking for the utmost in versatility, there’s no way around this rod.

  • Incredible versatility
  • Basically three rods in one
  • Protective case is a little bulky for transportation

Tenkara USA Hane

Tenkara USA Hane

– Tenkara Rod

– Collapsible to 15″

– Length: 10’10”

As the last recommendation in our big buyer’s guide we want to introduce you to the concept of Tenkara . Tenkara is a Japanese sub-style of fly fishing where you use longer rods where the fly line is attached directly to the rod, eliminating the need of a fly reel . The advantage being the fact that you’re not tempted (particularly as a beginner or intermediate) to take too much line off your reel trying to make extra long casts while the fish are holding much closer to where you’re casting from.

Since the Tenkara USA Hane rod is collapsible to 15″ it is also a great fly rod for any kind of travelling. When fully extended the rod is 10’10” long, turning it into a nymph fly rod (don’t worry you can fish dries with it as well).

My verdict : The Tenkara USA Hane is the ideal choice if you’re curious about trying Tenkara or if you’re looking for a small fly rod to bring along on any travels.

  • Collapsible to 15″
  • No need of a fly reel
  • Limited versatility

Best 3 wt Fly Rod Combos

In the second part of this review we’ll take a look at the best fly rod combos in the 3 weight range. A combo is a good idea if you are fairly new to fly fishing or want to make sure that the entire equipment works well together and don’t have a fishing friend to ask for advice.

Orvis Clearwater 763-4 Outfit (7’6″ 3wt)

Orvis Clearwater 3 wt fly rod combo

– Set includes rod, reel, fly line and backing

– Cordura rod tube for increased protection

The Orvis Clearwater 763-4 Outfit ( read our in-depth review here ) is a great setup if you want to get into fly fishing and want to make sure your combo works together well. The clearwater rod and reel are ideal for beginners but you will equally have fun fishing these rods for years to come. This fly rod set also makes for a great fly fishing gift .

The black aluminum reel seat on the Orvis Clearwater 763-4 Outfit gives the rod a high end look and feel. All you need to do is put the rod, reel, backing and fly line together, add a tippet and a fly and you’re ready to make your first casts. At a length of only 7’6″, this rod is made for small streams and creeks.

  • 25 year Orvis guarantee
  • Setup is well balanced
  • A tippet and some flies wound round off this great fly rod combo

Redington Crux 376-4 Combo

Redington Crux 376-4 Fly Rod Combo

– Includes rod, reel, backing, fly line and leader

– Set comes ready to use

– Cordura rod tube for extra protection

The Redington Crux is another great set if you want to make sure everything is well balanced out of the box. The fast action rod is ideal for beginners and intermediates. When testing it out on a small stream we were surprised by the punch it delivers. It’s no problem casting even bigger streamers with this rod. The set is complemented by the Redington Rise II reel, a CNC machined #3/4 reel made from titanium.

Great thing about the Redington Crux 3 weight fly rod combo is the fact that it comes with a Rio Premier Gold fly line. We found it to be a fly line that is a great allrounder but shines at delicate presentations thanks to its long head. The set is rounded off by Dacron backing and a RIO tapered leader – all you have to do is pick your favourite fly, tie it on and catch your first fish.

  • Well-balanced set
  • Great all-around trout fly line included
  • A few flies would be a nice addition to this set

Conclusion on the Best 3 Weight Fly Rods

Well there you have it, a comprehensive rundown of all of the best 3 weight fly fishing rods on the market today. As you can probably already tell, there are rods available for various price points, ranging from expensive to affordable, so you will definitely find something that suits your needs, no matter what your skill level is!

You’ve also learned that the 3 weight rod range is highly versatile in terms of the styles you can fish. A classic three weight in the 9″ range is great as an allrounder for small streams and creeks. But a #3 is also the ideal weight class to try nymphing techniques. And if you want to go explore micro spey style fishing, a three weight is the way to go as well, since that’s the rod size you’d pick to hunt trout on such a light two-handed setup. Lastly, let’s not forget glass fly rods, which are a delight to cast as well in the three weight range. So no matter which one you end up getting, I’m sure you’ll have a lot of fun on the water since three weights guarantee an exciting fishery.

FAQs on the Best 3 Weight Fly Rod

What is a 3 weight fly rod used for?

A 3 weight fly rod is typically used for small stream fishing, targeting small to medium-sized trout, and is also a popular choice for anglers fishing for panfish. It’s ideal for making delicate presentations with small flies.

What should I look for in a 3 weight fly rod?

When choosing a 3 weight fly rod, consider the rod’s action, length, and material. A moderate to fast action is usually a good choice for this weight class. The length can vary, but 7 to 8.5 feet is common. As for material, most high-quality fly rods are made of graphite for its strength and lightness.

What are some of the best brands for 3 weight fly rods?

Some of the top brands for 3 weight fly rods include Sage, Orvis, Winston, and Thomas & Thomas. These brands are renowned for their quality and performance in the fly fishing world.

Is a 3 weight fly rod suitable for beginners?

A 3 weight fly rod can be suitable for beginners, especially those who plan to fish primarily in small streams for trout or other small to medium-sized fish. However, a 4 or 5 weight rod might offer a bit more versatility for beginners who aren’t sure what type of fishing they’ll do most.

What’s the typical cost of a good 3 weight fly rod?

The cost of a 3 weight fly rod can vary significantly depending on the brand, materials, and craftsmanship. You can find budget-friendly options for under $200, while high-end rods from premium brands can cost $800 or more.

Can I use a 3 weight fly rod for larger fish?

While it’s technically possible to land larger fish with a 3 weight rod, it’s not generally recommended. This rod weight is designed for smaller fish species, and most larger fish would put too much strain on the rod, potentially leading to breakage.

The Clearwater 103-4 is specifically designed to enhance European nymphing tactics. Its light sensitivity and reach offer the perfect rod for maintaining contact with a multiple-fly nymphing rig. Given the new popularity of this technique, the Clearwater 103-4 coupled with a Tactical Nymph line is an exceptional outfit offering reduced line sag and better contact for quicker reaction to subtle takes. Beyond Euro techniques, the rod can also be used to fish a single dry fly, dry/dropper rigs, or even nymphing with a strike indicator.

The new Clearwater® Rod Series is not just a cosmetic face-lift, but a complete overhaul from the ground up by our Vermont rod designers. Everything has changed except the value. It's still the best fly rod you can buy for the money, but with a significant upgrade in performance and looks in a comprehensive series that covers every angler from small stream addicts to Skagit slinging two-handers. Each rod was designed with a purpose-built profile and action to handle the kind of fishing the rod model would be traditionally used for, from medium-action small stream rods to medium-fast freshwater rods and fast-action big game rods.

8 Best Travel Fly Rods: 2024 Buyers Guide

One of my clients and my guides hiking into a fishing spot with travel fly rods

To be honest, I don’t own or use travel fly rods myself, however, since I have guided hundreds of traveling clients that have come from as far away as Africa and Australia, some of them bring their travel fly rods so I’ve had plenty of opportunity to cast and fish with some good travel fly rods, and some not so good travel fly rods.

If you are on a budget, the best travel fly rod is the Redington Classic Trout, which sells for about $189, or the Orvis Clearwater Travel Fly Rod for $249, or if you’ve got the cash, the overall best travel fly rod is the Hardy Aydon Travel Fly Rod.

I’ll discuss other travel fly rods from $79.00 to over $500.

To be honest, some of the discount travel rods and the telescopic travel rods I’ve tried really suck! They just don’t load well, which means they cast poorly, and when fishing with them they either feel like a pool cue or are whippy like a wet noodle. As a fly casting and fly fishing instructor, I know that learning to cast on these very cheap rods will be harder.

We may make a small commission from some of the links on this website, which is at no cost to you. I appreciate your support. Learn More

What Is A Travel Rod?

A guide and his client

Travel rods are like regular fly rods except that they are six or eight pieces, and when they are broken down, they are often less than 20 inches, making them perfect for a suitcase on a plane or for stuffing in a backpack and hiking into a secluded fishing spot.

A travel fishing rod or travel rod uses a lightweight design crafted of graphite or carbon fiber .

Travel rods do not typically come with a reel unless you are buying some of the cheap ones on Amazon. You can find travel rods designed for various applications and weights from three-weight to ten-weight for big salmon.

Although they are called travel fly rods, they can be used anywhere and all the time if you want.

These are my reviews of the top travel fly rods available today, and I’ll let you choose which one best fits your needs.

Common Travel Fly Rod Lengths, Weights, and Pieces

While travel fly rods can reach up to 14 feet in length, those designs remain pretty rate. The typical lengths for these rods range from 8.5 to 10 feet, with the most common lengths including:

What’s the perfect length for a travel fly rod, you ask? Choose fly rods of up to nine feet in length to gain the best accuracy, but if you need greater flexibility or for custom methods, choose a rod of greater than nine feet. Nine feet offers the sweet spot for a fly rod.

Because travel rods are made with more pieces than a two-piece or a four-piece they are slightly heavier. This is due to the ferrules and the extra resins. Many five or six weights are around 3 to 4 ounces on average. However, the actual weight of the rod will depend on how long the rod is and the rod weight rating.

Some of the really cheap Fiberglass fly rods weigh the most, between six and 15 ounces (between 170 and 425 grams), but graphite and composite rods weigh less. Fly rods don’t come imprinted with their ounces or grams weight but you can find that on the manufacturer’s website.

Typically, you use the same line weight as the rod weight rating, so if the manufacturer recommends a weight rating of five, you’ll read a 5wt on the side of the rod or its packaging.

Pro Tip: Rod weight matters a lot. Use a fly rod with a weight of one to four for small trout or panfish or really for any small stream fishing. When fishing in large streams or rivers, use a four to six-weight rod to catch trout and small bass.

If you can only pack one rod for a trout fishing trip, choose a five-weight for its versatility.

Bass, carp, pike, and steelhead fishing requires a six to eight-weight fly rod and line, while large salmon, steelhead, musky, or saltwater fishing requires eight to 10-weight rods.

Fly fishing for big game fish like Tarpon takes the heaviest weight rod and line of 10 to 14.

Pro Tip #2: With any fly rod the sections can come apart when casting. I’ve seen hundreds of rod tips go flying off when casting. With travel rods, there are even more sections that can potentially come off.

To lower the chance of this from happening, when lining up your ferrules, instead of lining them up and then pushing them tight, have them slightly misaligned and then twist them into alignment as you push them together tight. This twisting locks them in place better, and rarely do my rod pieces ever come apart during casting.

Best Travel Fly Rods: All Price Ranges

Now that we’ve covered the common weights, lengths, and pieces, and what sizes are best per species, let’s dive into the greatest depths of fly fishing gear to explore the best travel fly rods.

I’ll cover a variety of rod weights and lengths, so you can find one that suits your needs whether you want to fish the shallows of the Oklahoma River, or the deep waters of the Hudson River, or the Niagara River.

Douglas Upstream Ultra-Lite Fly Rod

3wt travel rod

I really loved fishing the Douglas Upstream Ultra-lite Fly rod in both the 4-piece and the 6-piece travel rod.

It is super smooth casting and is a light rod that is great for small stream trout and panfish.

This is, as the name implies, a lightweight rod, and it only comes in 2, 3, and 4 weight sizes.

Douglas offers its Upstream Ultra-Lite fly rod in eight lengths, ranging from six feet six inches to eight feet eight inches.

Choose between a simple two-piece fly fishing rod or a more complex six-piece design in this.

Only the six-foot-six-inch rod comes in the two-piece design. The seven feet three inches, eight feet, eight feet three inches, and eight feet eight inches rods come in four pieces. You can get the seven feet, seven feet six inches, and eight feet lengths in a six-piece design.

Every option uses the same bamboo-like handle design made from cork. This rod features spigot ferrules to enhance energy transferability and a sliding ring reel seat to reduce weight.

Every rod comes with a 1 5/8” brushed aluminum rod tube and sock to make packing it easier.

Hardy Aydon Travel Fly Rod

3wt travel rod

When you want the best medium fast rod action travel rod, try the Hardy Aydon travel fly rod, offering four length options from 3 weight to 10 weight:

This six-piece rod handles line weights of four through 10, depending on the length of the rod. The design combines a cork rod handle with a ceramic guide of lined titanium stripper and a chrome single foot.

The overall rod uses Sintrix multi-modulus carbon fiber, so it weighs less than a fiberglass rod. Some individuals may find this an easier rod to use because of the keyed fly reel seat slide band that doesn’t weigh much.

Depending on the rod length you choose, the design either uses aluminum or wood spacers.

One of my favorite things about the Aydon model rod comes from its packaging. Hardy provides a travel tube that helps keep all of the pieces of the fishing rod together in your backpack or suitcase.

Greys Wing Travel Fly Rod

3wt travel rod

Okay, I feature this rod, hence the link to another page on this website, so you know I love it.

It’s my favorite when I need a medium-fast rod action. Greys Wing six-piece travel fly rod comes in four lengths, but I recommend the nine-foot length because it offers the greatest versatility in various fishing situations.

Here are all of the length options:

  • 11 feet four inches

Depending on the length you choose, you can use a 3wt, 5wt, 8wt, or 9wt line with this six-piece rod.

You get two handle choices – RHW or TPSF. Like most travel rods, this design uses a cork rod handle. Greys Wing’s design features a lined stripper with a stainless steel snake on a Powerlux carbon rod in a grey and red color combination.

Depending on the length of the rod you pick, this design uses either single or double-foot snake guides and either wood or alloy spacers with an alloy fly reel seat. Its reel features dual locking nuts with a nylon cushion ring.

Similar to the Douglas Upstream, it uses a keyed and milled reel seat slide band. I love that Greys Wing makes it easier to safely pack this rod by supplying a hard tube and rod bag for it.

Echo Trip Eight Piece

Echo Trip Fly Rod

The other fishing rods reviewed offer a bevy of lengths, but Echo’s Trip travel rod comes apart in eight pieces for truly simple packing.

Each piece measures 15 inches, and its case measures 18 inches. That means you can easily fit it into any suitcase or backpack.

Echo chose to offer its travel fishing rod only in a nine-foot length.

It does offer three versions catering to three line weights: 5wt, 6wt, and 8wt.

By choosing to design this rod in only nine feet, Echo has focused on providing power and fast action for its travel rod.

Orvis Clearwater

3wt travel rod

You can get excited with the price of the six-piece Clearwater Travel Fly Rod, $249. It is a great rod for that price.

To get the whole outfit, you’ll pay the same price as you would for the other options in this article – about $500 to $550.

Now, on to its design. This snazzy-looking black chrome rod with white accents features a chrome snake and a stripping guide with a ceramic insert.

The sleek looks continue with its black nickel aluminum reel seats. It does just look cool, Orvis used composite tips on the fighting butts to add to the durability of the rod.

Like many other travel fly rods, it comes with a rod tube. This one’s in gray.

Redington Classic Trout

Redington Classic Trout Fly Rod

The Redington Classic Trout fly rod is specifically designed for trout. Why? It’s in the name.

I have had the opportunity to try this rod a few times, and if I were going to buy a travel fly rod under $200, this would be it.

The Redington Classic Trout Rod comes in four pieces and six pieces.

While all the four-piece rods come in lengths and weights, starting at 7 feet six inches and ranging up to nine feet in length.

The Redington Classic Trout travel rod only has one model, which is a 9 foot 5 weight that comes in 6 pieces to make traveling easier.

This rod’s moderate action works well for all anglers, and it’s good in small creeks, rivers, or from the comfort of your boat.

Because it only weighs 3.1 ounces and offers great flexibility, it provides a superb alternative for a long day of fishing.

Choose from two configurations – a four-piece or a backpack-optimized six-piece. Various fly fish rod lengths work with different line weights. Here’s a quick guide:

  • 7 feet six inches, 2wt or 3wt
  • 8 feet, 4wt
  • 8 feet six inches, 3wt,
  • 9 feet, 5wt, 6wt.

As usual, the nine feet in length option offers the greatest versatility in application.

Redington Trailblazer

3wt travel rod

Another Redington winner is the Redington Trailblazer.

While the Classic Trout specializes in trout fishing, the Trailblazer was made for backpacking and traveling and can work for essentially any fishing situation.

The compact design breaks apart into six pieces and comes in two length options.

Choose either a 7 feet six-inch design that works with a 3wt line for small stream fishing, little tout, and panfish, or a nine feet option that works with a 5wt line for bigger rivers, lake fishing, nymphing and streamer fishing, bigger trout and bass, and any waterway requiring a loner casts.

Redington includes a compact storage tube to help keep all parts safe and organized.

According to the manufacturer, the Trailblazer provides the lightest rod they’ve offered.

Also, if you care about such things, this rod comes in a jaunty red blank streaked with neon green.

Getting down to the mechanics of this rod, it uses single-foot snake guides and an anodized aluminum reel seat, resulting in a travel rod that weighs less but also proves more durable.

M MAXIMUMCATCH Travel Fishing Rod

This is the M MAXIMUMCATCH Travel Fishing Rod

Best Tavel Fly Rod Under $100

One of my clients had this rod with him, and since I’d seen it on Amazon and since it was very inexpensive, I decided to try it out.

Although the M MAXIMUMCATCH Maxcatch Traveler Fly Fishing Rod casts 40 feet of fly line pretty well, this is still my least favorite of all the rods on this page.

I felt that the rod felt a bit heavy and a bit stiff compared to most rods and my concern is the durability of the rod. It just didn’t feel as good when casting and fishing and when fighting fish.

However, If you are a total beginner or you have a young child who is hard on gear and you don’t want him using a $200 rod, then this is a good option, and that is why I’m recommending it.

It comes in a range of 5 to 8 weight and is only made as a 9-foot rod.

If you are looking for an entire setup, check out my recent article on the best fly fishing combos and kits , and if you need a reel to go with your rods, check out the Best Fly Reels page.

Best Fly Rods For Traveling Summary

If you are looking for the best fly rods for travel, these are them and they range from $79 to over $900.00. My advice when choosing a travel fly rod is to choose the best one that fits your budget.

3 Weight Fly Rod [Best Uses & Recommendations]

3wt travel rod

When I first started fly fishing I wasn’t sure what fly rod weight I needed and how I should choose one. Over time I learned the importance of having the proper fly fishing setup and how big of a difference it makes out on the water.

If you are new to fly fishing like I was or are looking for a new rod and reel setup you might be wondering what is a 3 weight and when should you be using one. This is an important question, and the right answer may vary depending on a few different factors.

A 3 weight fly rod is best use when targeting small trout and panfish in small rivers and streams. The smaller length and size of a 3 weight allows anglers to effectively use smaller flies and target trout and panish where space may be limited.

In this article we will discuss in detail what a 3 weight fly rod is used for, our 3 weight fly rod recommendations, and other helpful tips and insights.

3 Weight Fly Rod

A 3 weight fly rod is ideal for casting small flies at smaller sized fish and it’s at its best when fishing in skinny water with tight quarters.

A 3 weight is the ultimate finesse fly fishing rod that will allow you to feel the fight of even the smallest fish and use smaller flies and finesses presentations. These rods are commonly used for targeting small trout, bass and panfish in small bodies of water.

Here are some of the basic advantages and disadvantages of a 3 weighted fly rod:

  • Perfect for small fish (small trout, panfish etc.)
  • Lightweight
  • Better Accuracy
  • More sensitivity
  • Ideal for skinny water
  • Easier to pack

Disadvantages

  • Limited to small fish
  • Shorter casting distance
  • Not ideal for heavier flies and rigs
  • Not as versatile
  • Can’t fish heavier lines

Now that we have the basic 3 weight fly rod information out of the way, let’s talk when you should use a 3 weight with some specific examples.

For tips on how to select the right fly rod weight check out this article: How to Choose a Fly Rod Weight.

4 Perfect 3 Weight Fly Rod Fishing Situations

3wt travel rod

A 3 weight is the ultimate finesse fly fishing rod that can be used to target a variety of species. However, it’s more of a specialized rod than most and it’s really designed to do a few things extremely well.

Here are 4 perfect fly fishing situations that are best fished with using a 3 weight:

Small Streams

Perhaps the most common and popular use of a 3 weighted fly rod is for when targeting trout in small streams and ponds. There is no better choice in these situations.

In most small streams and ponds space may be limited. It’s not uncommon for these bodies of water to be surrounded by bushes, trees, rocks and logs. With all these obstacles in your way it’ll be tough to make long and accurate casts with longer and heavier rods.

That’s why a 3 weight is ideal in these conditions. Sure you might be able to get away with using a 4 or 5 weight in some cases. However, you’ll find making roll casts, high sticking, dapping and other casting techniques difficult.

When I first started fly fishing my friend would invite me to fish the south fork Provo river in Utah. It’s a great spot where a ton of beautiful native trout live and it doesn’t receive a lot of angling pressure. The quarters are very tight. I thought I could get away with using my 5-weight.

Needless to say I got hung up all of the time and couldn’t make accurate and shorter casts that I needed to get to where the fish were at. What a headache it was. After a while my friend let me barrow is Orvis Helios 3 weight and what a difference that rod made.

I was able to make more accurate casts, not get hung up as much and it was just a much more enjoyable experience. If you are planning on fishing small streams, lakes and ponds I’d highly recommend picking up a 3 weight. You’ll be glad you did.

Backpacking

Another great application for 3 weight fly rod is while backpacking and fishing high mountain streams, ponds, and lakes. In general, most 3 weights are a lot shorter and lighter than other fly rods making them an ideal fit for hiking and for backpacking fishing trip.

A few summers ago, I went on a backpacking fishing trip to the Boulder Mountains in southern Utah. I brought along with my Orvis 5-weight fishing rod and real combo. As I navigated the small streams, ponds and lakes up there I painfully realized how oversized my rod was. I was easily hung up and couldn’t make the right casts in tight corners and around structure that I needed to.

On the other hand, my friend brought his 3-weight setup and it made things much easier and a lot less frustrating for him. Needless to say he had a lot more success than I did. After I got back I went back home and made sure I added a 3-weight to my fly fishing arsenal.

The lightweight, shorter length and additional sensitivity that you get with a 3 weight fly rod is why it’s the ideal choice for backpacking fishing trips. It will be easy to pack and haul around and will make casting a lot easier in tight spots where accuracy is key.

A 3 weighted fly rod is not just limited to catching trout in small bodies of water. It’s also a great setup when targeting panfish on the fly rod. In fact, one of my favorite ways to catch bluegill and other panfish is with topwater poppers using a 3 weight.

Most panfish are smaller than other species targeted on a fly rod. Fishing for these fish doesn’t require heavy duty rods and lines. A shorter, lighter rod like a 3 weight will make casting lighter flies like small poppers, streamers and other flies easy. It also makes fighting the fish a lot more fun and you’ll end up landing a lot more.

Small Trout

Most experienced fly fishermen and fisherwoman who get asked what fly rod weight should be used they will tell you to match the fly rod to the size or caliber of fish you are targeting. If you are fishing for small trout a small fly rod weight is best.

With that being said, when you are targeting smaller trout there isn’t a better rod to use than a 3-4 weight. A light action rod like a 3 weight will make throwing smaller flies easier and also help you keep the fish pinned until you can land them.

If you are planning on targeting smaller trout in rivers and streams than there isn’t a better way to do that than with a 3 weight.

Best 3 Weight Fly Fishing Methods

There is nothing like seeing a fish come up and take your fly on the surface. Throwing small dry flies on a 3 weight is a perfect combination. This combination works especially well in the summer or anytime there is a hatch or insects around.

Another popular fly fishing technique that you can use a 3 weight for is nymphing. In fact, it’s been said that trout do up to 90% of their feeding underwater.

Nymphs, or flies that imitate immature insects and are fished underwater are designed to take advantage of the fact that there are always bugs subsurface.

The best way to imitate these immature insects is by fishing nymphs, and in small streams and rivers there isn’t a better way to do that than with a 3 weight fly rod.

Small Streamers

When most fly fishermen and fisherwoman think of streamers they think of big profiled flies. However, small streamers can be a great way to catch panfish, bass and smaller trout. For this technique a 3 weight is the ideal rod choice. You’ll have a lot more control and be able to detect and feel every bite.

Best 3 Weight Fly Rod’s

If you have made it this far you might now be wondering about picking up a 3 weight rod to add to your fly fishing collection. You also might be wondering which brands and models are best. Don’t worry we have you covered.

Here are the best overall 3 weight fly rods in my opinion:

3wt travel rod

If price isn’t a factor and you are looking for a high end rod than look no further than the Helios 3F Fly Rod by Orvis . This is an incredibly light and sensitive rod that that will take your fly fishing game to the next level. I’d highly recommend this rod. It’s weight, sensitivity and overall design is pretty tough to beat.

Orvis Clearwater Freshwater Fly Rod (Best Value)

3wt travel rod

If you are anything like me, you may not have an unlimited fishing budget and will have to carefully balance price and performance. This doesn’t mean you can’t get a highly quality rod for a good price. If you are in this situation, I’d highly recommend picking up the Clearwater Freshwater Fly Rod by Orvis. It’s an incredible rod for the price point and is well worth the investment. It’s not as nice as the Helios but it’s still an all-around great rod.

Daiwa Tatula Review

The Daiwa Tatula was introduced into the marketplace in 2013 under a very creative marketing campaign called “Project T” and with it came three models.

The three different models share many of the same attributes, with the flagstone being the T-Wing Levelwind System or TWS as Daiwa refers to it, and the main differences being gearing ratios, bearings, and spool size.

In this review of the Daiwa Tatula 100, Daiwa Tatula Type-R and Tatula Type-HD, I will show you the differences between these models and why you will want to choose one over the other based on your particular style of fishing.

Here is the short answer to which model makes the most sense for you.

Tatula   100

The standard Tatual is the entry level to the Tatula series and is a very durable reel with great features including the T-Wing levelwind.  If you are doing more freshwater than saltwater fishing and are looking to save a few dollars then this is probably the reel for you.

Tatula Type-R

The Type-R is going to give you these additional features:

  • 8 bearing system includes 2 corrosion resistant bearings (2CRBB + 5BB + 1RB)
  • Super lightweight aluminum spool
  • Zaion drag star
  • 10 grams lighter
  • Available in super fast 8.1:1 gear ratio

For the angler that is going to be fishing inshore and or has a need for a super fast retrieve option then this is the model you will want to go with.

Tatula Type-HD

The Type-HD is going to give you the same features of the Tatula and then the following:

  • Extra long 100mm handle for more leverage
  • 30% more line capacity

Saltwater anglers that are targeting larger species up to say 10 lbs will want to choose the Type-HD for its extra cranking power, larger handle, and extra line capacity.

T-Wing System (TWS) – Daiwa’s T-Wing System is unique and solves one of the common problems with baitcasting reels which is the friction that is usually caused by the level wind system.  With the unique design of TWS, the line is free to flow through the wide part of the top section when casting.

Once you start to retrieve the line, it slips into the lower groove and is then evenly distributed onto the reel.

Rugged, lightweight aluminum frame and side plate (gear side) – The Tatula has a very clean and precisely designed frame and sideplates that are both made of lightweight aluminum which leads to the overall reel weights of between 7.6 oz and 8.1 oz depending on the model.

Air Rotor – The air rotor not only weighs about 15% less than a traditional rotor but its design to also evenly distribute the stress across the Zaion carbonite composite material and thus accomplishes two goals, one is strength and the other is reduced weight.

Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag UTD –  All three of the Tatula models use what Daiwa refers to as the Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag system.  The UTD is comprised of oversized carbon fiber drag washers that are placed on either side of the spool and allow for even distribution of the force on the spool.

This design results in a smooth drag and during our testing, we did not have any experience with the drag catching or binding.

Magforce-Z cast control – Magforce-Z is what makes the castability of the Daiwa Tatula series of reels so great.  Daiwa’s unique magnetic braking system allows the spool to spin freely early on in the cast and then at just the right time it applies the magnets to start slowing the rotation of the spool to prevent back spoiling.

Backspooling is a common issue for many anglers, especially when just starting to use a baitcaster.  There is a dial adjustment on the sideplate that allows the user to dial in just the right amount of pressure depending on his or her personal preference, lure weight and experience.

8 Bearing System – The Tatula reels use what are called CRBB or Corrosion Resistant Ball Bearings, these are specially treated stainless ball bearings that are designed to provide up to 12 times the normal life expectancy of steel ball bearings under harsh saltwater conditions. (Not on the Tatula Standard.)

Swept Power Handle – The Large, 90mm swept power handle with cutouts for reduced weight places the paddles closer to the center of the reel and rod which means that more energy from each crank of the handle is transferred directly to the reel and is not wasted unnecessarily, this results in more power when you retrieve.

The Tatula Type-HD offers a 100mm handle for even more cranking power.

Features at a Glance

  • T-Wing System (TWS)
  • Rugged, lightweight aluminum frame
  • Air Rotation
  • Ultimate Tournament Carbon Drag UTD
  • Magforce-Z cast control
  • 5.4:1, 6.3:1, 7.3:1 & 8.1:1 gear ratios
  • 8 Bearing System
  • Infinite Anti-reverse
  • Corrosion resistant clutch mechanism
  • Large, 90mm swept power handle
  • I-Shape handle knob

At the heart of the Tatula series of reels is the T-Wing or TWS system as Daiwa refers to it, so just what is this T-Wing System?  With most baitcasting reels there is a common problem which is how do you get your line back onto the spool evenly.

Different manufacturers have come up with different solutions with the most common one being what is referred to as the level wind system.

Most level wind systems incorporate a winding mechanism that moves horizontally back and forth across the spool to distribute the line evenly.  The line typically passed through a small guide hole and this can cause friction on the line when you cast the reel.

Daiwa has come up with a very ingenious method called the T-Wing that allows the line to move side to side in the top of the T part of the guide, this allows the line to play off the reel smoothly with almost no friction.

Once the clutch is engaged the line drops down into the lower part of the T guide and is directed back and forth across the spool to wind evenly.  (See Diagram Above)

Specifications

There are three models of the daiwa tatula here are the specifications., daiwa tatula 100 specifications, daiwa tatula type-r specifications, daiwa tatula type-hd specifications.

Ergonomically the reel fits very nicely in the palm of your hand and should deliver a stress-free experience after many hours of fishing.  If you choose the HD model then you will have to take into account that it is going to be slightly heavier than comparable models such as the Abu Garcia Revo SX or the Shimano Curado 70 or Shimano Curado I  but it is going to give you more line capacity for fighting those larger fish.

When it comes to retrieval rates, the Tatula gives you many different choices with gear ratios between 5.4:1 and  8.1:1, so you are covered for many different fishing scenarios.  The oversized 90mm handle on the Tatula and Tatula Type-R and the 100mm handle on the Tatula Type-HD give you extra cranking power to muscle in those larger fish.

Daiwa changed out the knobs on the Tatula to a flatter paddle style that you might be familiar with if you have ever fished Shimano baitcasters, personally, I like the new knobs quite a bit.

  • Corrosion resistant
  • Magnetic braking

Alternatives

There are two reels that I think you should take a look at.  The first is the Shimano Curado 70 if you are gong to be targeting smaller species such as spotted seatrout. The reel is lightweight and has a slightly greater retrieve rate than the Shimano Curado I. Read the full  Shimano Curado 70 review HERE .

If you are targeting slightly larger species such as Snook and Redfish then the Curado I with the extra drag and spool size might be a better choice for you.  Read the full  Shimano Curado I review HERE .

In Conclusion

With a total of 7 different configurations (not counting left vs right retrieve), the Tatula series of reels for Daiwa can cover a very wide range of angling applications.  These reels are priced and compete in the main segment of the baitcasting market and offer you a good solution for almost any type of fishing situation you might find yourself in.

The reels are very solid when it comes to quality and durability.  In our tests, we were pleased with the performance of the three configurations we took into the field and really had nothing negative to say about them other than they were slightly heavier than we would traditionally expect from Daiwa.

The bottom line is that all three of the models offer something to be desired, which you will have to decipher based on the style of fishing you intend to use the reel for.  We are confident that all will hold up over time which has been our experience with other Daiwa products.

Performance: The Tatula TAT721 charted out in the lab similar in power to our Creature Feature baseline rod, the G.Loomis MBR844C GLX meaning that even though there's really no industry standard, this stick is basically what we'd expect from a heavy powered rod.

Casting: Matched with a Daiwa Exceler for testing duties, the TAT721 demonstrated very good casting performance. The tip loads very predictably and can comfortably handle baits within its recommended lure rating. It's really fun pitching half ounce jigs with this stick.

Sensitivity: Daiwa's SVF Bias blanks have always performed well overall in my hands, but if there's one area of complaint I've had with the Steez rods in particular, it's that they're not sensitive enough for their price point. I've not felt that way about the Zillion rods.

The Tatula sticks are priced even more attractively than that of the Zillions, but with their unsanded blanks, they remind me of the Steez rods. In fact, other than the balance of the rod and the components with which it is built including the reel seat and handle, I might be hard pressed to distinguish the blank on this Tatula rod from that of a non-Compile-X Steez - especially in the area of sensitivity.

That's either bad news for the Steez rods or great news for the Tatula or both, but I was more than happy with what I could feel dragging a jig along the bottom of Clear Lake with this rod.

Power: Weighing in at a mere four ounces for a stick rated at heavy power, it's easy to take for granted the backbone this rod possesses. The TAT721HFB rated out on our RoD WRACK as a stick similar in power to the MBR844C GLX - another deceivingly powerful stick - and it fishes to this power out on the water as well. There's more than enough backbone in this rod to set the hook and control your catch to the boat through a mix of cover situations.

Features: Daiwa spared little expense filling up the features checklist on their Tatula casting rods. In addition to a split rear grip made of EVA foam, this rod benefits from the following features:

Daiwa’s Tatula Elite Spinning Rods Review

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The result of this is, those who are on a more modest budget can now acquire top quality gear that simply was not available in these price ranges in the not too distant past.

We obtained the new Daiwa Tatula Elite Spinning rod to mate with the Tatula LT Spinning Reel. The specific model we’ll be reviewing is the TAEL701MLFS. This rod is the 7’ Med Lt Meyer. It’s lure rating is 1/16-3/8 with a line rating of 4-10. A finesse rod for sure.

It has the same cosmetics as all other Tatula Elite rods whether they are casting or spinning models. The two tone glossy grey finished blanks, thread wraps, split EVA foam grip, rear grip and foregrip and the Fuji reel seat.

This rod uses Daiwa’s SVF (Super-high Volume Fiber) Nano-Plus technology with X45 carbon fiber materials, Fuji Alconite ring guides fitted with Alconite inserts and comes with a Limited 5-year warranty.

Designed by experts

daiwa tatula travel rod review

This particular rod was designed with input from Cody Meyer who is well known for his ability with finesse presentations such as drop-shotting, shakey head fishing etc. A west coast angler, Cody is well versed with using diminutive lures and light line to catch finicky bass.

We spooled our Tatula LT with #8 line to begin our testing with various small, light weight baits of all kinds. We decided to start with some neko rigged worms to get a feel for how sensitive the rod is with bottom oriented lures.

We have not been disappointed in the least. The Tatula rod transmits vibrations very well so that you can feel when your bait is at rest, makes contact with various objects on the lake floor and most importantly, bites. Subtle, crushing or anything in between, you feel it.

Setting the hook is when you see how strong the blank really is. Even on big fish the set is sure, quick and requires very little effort. The action is a joy to fight a fish with in that the tip is so forgiving while the blank transitions seamlessly into its backbone to supply the angler with plenty of power to handle fish of all sizes.

How strong can it be?

We’ve had to put some serious pressure on big fish in grass to get them out with this rod. It hasn’t been a concern other than the thought that we might just snap the line given how hard we’ve had to pull to get them out of the grass.

We’ve experimented with everything but the kitchen sink in lures both soft and hard. Most within the recommended range but, as usual, some well outside that range to see how far we could push the rod. Here again, our biggest issue became wondering whether or not we were going to snap the line as the rod has handled everything including over 1/2 ounce without issue.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The Tatula Elite Spinning Rod is wonderfully balanced with the Tatula LT. It is a pleasure to fish all day. It doesn’t fatigue you thanks to that balance and its light weight.

The butt section of this rod is another area that we find to be just right. Some sticks of this length have a much longer rear grip. In most cases, we prefer a length that doesn’t quite reach your elbow as this allows more freedom of movement for working things like jerkbaits, small top-water plugs, shakey heads etc.

When you’re using those type of lures, if the rear grip is so long that it makes contact with the inside of your elbow every time you pop the rod tip, it can go from frustrating to down right irritating. The TAEL701MLFS gives you more than enough room to work lures as aggressively as you want while also providing plenty of butt to anchor against your forearm to effeciently fight those big fish.

This particular model has the standard guides which have proven to be very responsive and sensitive but for those who want a more customized version, these rods are also available with AGS guides. While the standard models retail for $179, the models equipped with AGS start at $279.

In our opinion, you can’t go wrong with either model. The design, workmanship, actions and aesthetics are quality throughout.

If there is any negative in this rod, the only thing that we don’t particularly care for is the placement of the hook keeper. It is located just ahead of the butt section on the rear grip on the underside of the blank. We would prefer that it be repositioned, as unorthodox as this might sound, just ahead of the foregrip.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

It just gets a little uncomfortable when carrying or reaching for the rod to feel the line next to the handle. But that might be nit picking on our part. You be the judge.

In the end, this spinning rod, with all that it offers the angler, is more than fairly priced with actions that are well honed for specific techniques yet offering flexibility at the same time.

See ya’ on the water …

The Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod is a high-performance rod that quickly garnered the attention of experienced bass anglers– even if it’s not quite a professional-grade bass rod.

That said, this versatile spinning rod provides more than a refined technique in bass angling with a spinning set-up capable of employing more than one lure action effectively.

With a fantastic blank employing maximum performance design techniques generally found on more expensive rod blanks, the Tatula series rods offers a blank with plenty of backbone.

That said, at a medium price range, this review examines whether or not the awesome, all-around blank and excellent guides are worth the fishing gear investment or if you’re better off opting for a general-purpose bass rod at a bargain price.

  • X-45 Concept Blanks
  • Fuji Fazelite guide system
  • Extremely ergonomic design
  • Not a budget-friendly option
  • Iffy reel seat
  • More for bass fishing

Construction (craftsmanship, make quality)

The real value of the Tatula series rods crops up in their powerful blanks that employ manufacturing techniques often found on more expensive fishing poles .

The Tatula X-45 Blanks use a high-end manufacturing process called Braiding-X Fiber Braiding Technology that sees the graphite fibers wrapped at an alternating 45-degree bias.

This design approach not only eliminates bulky tubes and significantly reduces the amount of graphite needed, but it also helps limit blank twist while still providing a blank with plenty of backbone.

This design results in a stiffer blank, but the wrap of braid with graphite fibers allow you to target larger fish– even through heavy cover– without having to worry about cracking or breaking the stout blank.

Even better, Daiwa employs an SVF, or Super Volume Fiber, manufacturing process that uses nano resin particles to reduce the amount of resin applied and thus reduce the weight, ensuring a sensitive blank.

On top of that, this process also increases the graphite density of the rod blanks, further reinforcing the blank with plenty of backbone and ensuring its use as a durable choice.

Keep in mind that you generally find many of these manufacturing techniques used on expensive options made in Japan.

The fact that you get maximum performance at a relatively affordable price is just icing on the cake.

It also doesn’t hurt that this fishing pole comes with a solid hook keeper

Moving through this versatile spinning rod from the sensitive blank to the solid all-round performance guide quality, the Fuji Fazelite guide system uses a double-foot K-series.

While the Fazelite material is interesting in its own right, the inclusion of high-end performance K-series guides significantly reduces the incidence of line tangles.

The split handle design further boosts the blank quality by allowing you to better feel the slightest vibrations.

This solid choice makes the Tatula a tough competitor in the general-purpose bass rod market.

The Tatula pretty much utilizes exclusively quality materials for the entirety of this pole increasing not only the blank quality but every other high-performance component as well.

For starters, the Super Volume Fibers make another appearance with high-modulus graphite, offering a solid price-to-performance ratio without sacrificing blank quality.

The SVF resin is also worth its own mention given that it allows a tighter wrap of braid with the graphite and is not necessarily a given on a somewhat affordable option like this.

It’s also heavily responsible for providing some of the models with medium-heavy power without having to worry about the blank coming in bulky tubes.

Moving on from the fantastic blank, the Daiwa also spares no expense with its Fuji Fazelite guide system that further expands this pole as a sensitive spinning rod.

While not quite the ceramic Alconite found with other premium components, this modified aluminum-oxide blend performs nearly as well as those inserts.

Unlike older models that came with a split EVA foam handle, this general-purpose bass rod opts for primary handle materials made of premium cork.

The excellent handles of this high-performance rod only cement it as a great spinning set-up for all types of bass anglers.

This general-purpose bass rod doesn’t offer a wide range of actions with only fast and extra-fast available.

This approach introduces something of a trade-off where you lose a bit of potential casting distance but more than make up for that consequence with increased casting control .

On top of that, the quicker actions help boost the touch of this already somewhat sensitive blank.

The ever-popular medium-heavy, fast action blanks make adoption among bass anglers that much easier due to the solid hookset with a variety of lures from light lures to heavy lures.

Even better, the different spec configs contribute to the Tatula being a versatile spinning rod that can use one lure action or another with a broad range of lures.

This is one of the areas where Tatula’s powerful blanks are on full display as the stiffer blank ensures that you don’t have to worry about a strong backbone after engaging the general-duty bass rod’s solid hookset.

This approach allows you to use a wide variety of lures from light lures to heavy lures and all lure weights in between.

Even though this rod tops out with a medium-heavy blank, most fishermen agree that the entire series of rods offers more backbone than you might expect.

As such even if you opt for a lower power rating than the strongest medium-heavy blank, the Tatula will tend to function as a slightly heavier powered model than most of the comparable competition.

And while this lineup carries models with a lighter power than the top medium-heavy power options, none of them even dip into a proper medium-light power rating.

That said, as a general-purpose bass rod, the medium-heavy, fast action blanks serve as excellent bass rods that afford a stout blank with plenty of backbone for your growing bass arsenal.

In terms of quality, the Tatula offers high-grade components that see its guide quality sit well above average– even if it’s not quite “the best.” Still, the Fuji Fazelite quality guides enhance numerous features like improving casting control with a buttery smooth, modified aluminum oxide insert encased in a K-series ring.

Not only does this choice reduce the number of tangles you’ll have to deal with, but it also allows the modestly sensitive blank to reinforce that touch, leading to a surprisingly sensitive spinning rod.

However, one of the best qualities of this approach involves the guide system’s ability to cast even the strongest braids without worrying about it slicing through the rings or popping out the inserts.

Handle (material, shape, etc)

Whereas earlier models opted for a split EVA foam handle, the modern version still comes with excellent handles, but the primary handle materials now favor cork.

The natural cork handle uses a split handle design that tends to work the best with virtually any spinning set-up by balancing control over your spinning reel with sensitivity.

Uses (Who is this good for)

Billed as excellent bass rods from the beginning, Daiwa saw rapid adoption among bass anglers for these dedicated bass rods as part of a standard spinning set-up.

Of course, experienced bass anglers waited to see if the pitching technique in bass angling performed as well with a variety of lures and lure weights before jumping on the bandwagon.

Of course, with the ability to handle the strongest braids and afford some of the best hookset certainty with a strong backbone, it wasn’t long before real competitors recognized a solid choice with top-tier blank quality.

Fast-forward a few years and this spinning set-up is almost expected to be one of the dedicated bass rods in any serious bass arsenal.

It’s worth remembering that because this top-quality rod doesn’t come in at a bargain price, it might not be the best option for beginners– especially if they haven’t yet been bitten by the bug.

However, once a fisherman moves from the beginner to the intermediate level, this series of rods offers top-notch performance at a reasonably affordable price.

Reel and Real Seat Compatibility

In terms of quality, not everyone loves the FUJI PTS reel seat that comes with the Tatula, even if it is a durable choice.

The main issue seems to be the reel seat’s bulk which often loses out when compared to a tough competitor with a sleeker profile.

That said, you should have no issue with slop or wiggle with pretty much any spinning reel.

Still, real competitors may pine a bit for the reel seats included with the Tatula Elite Spinning Rod, though these designs can see a bit of variation with the hook keeper.

Conclusion (Wrap Up)

The Daiwa Tatula Spinning Rod offers a large collection of bass rods that hit the sweet spot between top-notch performance and an affordable price– though it’s by no means a budget-friendly option.

That said it’s still an affordable option with a medium price range, though is not really part of a professional collection like the Tatula Elite Spinning Rod or other expensive options.

Still, the Tatula spinning set-up is a quality rod with high-end performance thanks to high-quality materials and a great all-around blank with top-quality guides.

So, if you need solid all-around performance, able to use a variety of lures for an impressive general-duty bass rod, the Tatula Spinning Rod hits all the right notes in the price-to-performance ratio.

Bottom Line

The Tatula LT has become a successful spinning reel for Daiwa and has racked plenty of positive reviews. This is a more expensive option, which provides impressive all round performance. It is extremely lightweight and very smooth making this a delight to fish with for hours.

About the brand

Daiwa played a key role in the development of new materials in fishing gear. Daiwa was the first manufacturer in the world to incorporate graphite to both reel bodies and rotors. They also began using densely packed carbon fibers for fishing rods, which created a whole new outlook on rod development.

Daiwa's innovative personality has changed the whole ideology of fishing gear development, and has led to them becoming arguably the biggest name in all fishing. Daiwa also became extremely big in the bass industry, and have some of the most premier reels and rods in their collection.

Daiwa Tatula 100 Baitcaster Review

Jason sealock.

  • Sep 29, 2019

daiwa tatula travel rod review

The new Daiwa Tatula 100 Baitcasters offer a smaller frame, lighter weight and improved performance in the improved versions of the original Tatula line. I’ve been fishing with these reels for a bit and have found that they offer anglers a solid reel at the mid-tier price point. Here are some additional details on this new line-up of baitcasters from Daiwa.

You can find the Daiwa Tatula 100 at the following retailers:

  • Discount Tackle
  • Walmart.com
  • Tackle Warehouse
  • Bass Pro Shops

Awesome Aesthetics

Daiwa has always made a great looking baitcaster, but the frame and finish on the Tatula 100 series for 2019 really shows off their attention to detail and gives anglers a reel to be proud to own and fish. The sleek detailing and lines really accent how light and tight this reel feels and fishes. Every edge and part exudes quality.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Lighter weight

The aluminum frame gives this reel a solid foundation and the bodyweight is greatly reduced from handle to spool. The reel only weighs an impressive 6.9 ounces considering it has a full aluminum frame. It feels very solid and tight on the cast and retrieve.

The T-Wing system gives this reel its long distance casting and smooth line management that anglers have come to love in the Tatula series of reels.

New tension adjustments

The new tension knob is very snug and allows for precision adjustments that won’t slip or change as you fish. I found that it can be a little tricky to get it fine tuned the first time if you have big hands like me, but that’s because it is so tight and compact on the frame.

Once you get the weight of the lure dialed on the tension knob, you can let it rip without worry of anything changing or worrying with caps coming off if you’re someone that likes to just back the tension off and use your thumb like me.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Better thumbar control

The thumb bar system is upgrade and seems a lot more smooth and tight. I like that because I think a tight thumb bar keeps a reel quieter over the life of the reel. It’s very smooth to operate on the cast and engages quietly on the retrieve.

I think small details like this are a lot of what makes this an improved experience with this version of the Tatula baitcasters.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Smaller, easier to palm

These Daiwa Tatula 100 reels are a smaller form factor and fit so nicely in the palm of your hand. That leads to longer fishing with less fatigue over the life of fishing with this reel. It also has a lot to do with casting accuracy that most anglers don’t realize. You can roll cast a lot tighter with more precision if your wrist and hand aren’t flexing as much because they are opened wider on a bigger reel.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Great braking

The braking on this new Daiwa Tatula seems improved as well. It may not have much change in terms of engineering but it seems to handle small baits very well. I have been fishing 1/4 ounce swimbaits on it this summer on 12-pound line and catching a lot of fish on windy days around docks where I have to put a small lure in a tight spot without having an overrun stop me from immediately winding the lure.

daiwa tatula travel rod review

Great with a variety of lures

I’ve cranked and thrown swimbaits with the 6.3:1 Daiwa Tatula 100. I’ve flipped and pitched with the 8:1 Tatula and cast chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, worms and jigs on the 7:1 Tatula. I know this has become the staple reel for most of the Daiwa pros on tour this year and I see why now. It does really well with light lures and all of the conventional bass fishing techniques.

If you liked the original Daiwa Tatula line, you’ll find these smaller, tighter, lighter Tatula 100s more appealing. I really like it on the 7-foot, 3-inch MH Daiwa Tatula Rod. It’s been a great all-purpose setup for so many bass fishing applications. I take it on trips and it’s always on the deck now.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
