One of the most iconic American heavy metal bands, Mötley Crüe was born out of the beautiful Los Angeles, California in the United States.

Formed in 1981, bassist Nikki Six met drummer Tommy Lee through a mutual friend, and decided to form a band together. The two set out to find other members and met guitarist Mick Mars (real name Bob Deal) who was immediately auditioned and hired. Lee then recruited his high school mate Vince Neil, who was still a part of the band Rockandi, to be their lead vocalist. After a bit of apprehension, Neil gave in and joined the trio to form the band you know and love as Mötley Crüe today.

In November 1981 they released their first album “Too Fast For Love” which was entirely produced and released by their own record label Leathür Records and set out on a Canadian tour. Using this forward movement of cult popularity in Los Angeles, their manager at the time, Allan Coffman, helped them obtain a record deal with Elektra Records; which they signed in Spring 1982. The signing meant a re-mastered mix of the album “Too Fast For Love” as well as a new album entitled “Shout At The Devil” in the works, which was consequently released in 1983. A mere two years later, they released a third album, “Theatre of Pain.”

Their quick success was not without consequence however. Their party hard mentalities meant a few run-ins with the law, reaching their first breaking point when Vince Neil crashed his car, resulting in death and severe injury to other passengers. While “Theatre of Pain” was sitting atop the music charts, Neil was found guilty of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence and served time in 1986. If that wasn’t enough, following the release of their fourth album “Girls Girls Girls,” their 1987 tour had to be canceled due to Sixx being found dead from heroin overdose; however, he was revived back to life. Eventually their new managers Doug Thaler and Doc McGhee convinced them to attend rehab and the band took a step out of the spotlight.

A clean and sober band, Mötley Crüe recorded and released “Dr. Feelgood” in 1989 and it shot straight to the charts and stayed for weeks. By October 1991, the band released their first compilation album “Decade of Decadence” which also shot straight to the Billboard charts; however, the 90s was generally not a strong decade for the band. Neil left, was shortly replaced by John Corabi for the release of “Motley Crue” which didn’t meet the commercial expectation as their previous albums. With contractual obligations lived out in 1998, the band took back their catalog, but tensions were still high resulting solo projects by Tommy Lee, Nikki Sixx and Vince Neil.

Luckily things picked back up in the 2000s resulting in a reunion, and release of the “New Tattoo” and “Saints of Los Angeles” (2008). However, this also meant the announcement of their retirement and final tour.

Live reviews

This is the fourth time I've seen the Crüe, and the second time at MSG. Even though I also saw them on tour with Aerosmith, and saw a show during one of their residencies at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas, this Final Tour show lives up to expectations. Vince even learned most of the words to the songs!! (Anyone who has seen Mötley Crüe live before will know that this is kind of a big deal. At previous shows I’ve attended, the audience sang nearly as much as Vince did.)

Nikki Sixx is my favorite member of Mötley Crüe, and he was in top form at this show, and even had a fire-shooting attachment on his bass for "Shout at the Devil." He also regaled the audience with the long story of how he moved to LA and pulled the band together. Even though I already knew the story from reading The Dirt, it was still great to hear Nikki tell it live, in his own words. While that little interlude brought the energy level down a bit, it did a nice job of bringing the night full circle and truly encapsulating all 33 years of the band's life.

Tommy Lee's drum roller coaster contraption was totally insane, spanning the length of the arena floor, and allowing Tommy’s drum kit to do 360 degree spins as it travelled along the track. The guys played a solid two hour set and definitely went out with a bang (literally - there was a ton of pyro during closing number "Kickstart My Heart," including Nikki’s afore mentioned fire-shooting bass).

The strongest testament to this show is that the next day I had to go online to check the rest of their tour dates to find out if I could possibly see another show on the tour (sadly, no other cities convenient to me remain), and a full 24 hours later I was still buzzing with energy.

However, to paraphrase Nikki, this show/tour isn't "goodbye" because the Crüe's music isn’t going anywhere – it’s going to be around to haunt us until the day that we die.

Mötley Crüe is Mötley Crüe. Loud, aggressive, sometimes out of key and sometimes the lyrics are skipped or mumbled. But the show goes on, and the presentation is excellent. There is fire. There are dancers. There are lights and lasers and explosions, even Nikki's flame throwing bass guitar is back! About the only thing missing would be a giant video screen showing the band's MTV hits as they played them. If you have seen the Crüe at any point in the last decade, then you know what to expect; ten to twelve standard hits, a couple of newer wanna be hits, a few rotating 'deep cut' tracks that really are not that deep anymore. Oh, and then there is the drum solo. On this farewell tour the antics in the drum solo depend if the venue can support it. Sonically, maybe you're better without the drum solo - the antics are cool, the drumming is not. To me Mötley Crüe has always been a band of individuals that somehow fit together when they need to rock the stage. Tommy famous for his off stage antics as much as his drumming stunts - both overshadowing his ability a bit. Mick's quiet, methodical personality never seemed to fit his guitar playing, or the band - but it works. Vince - well has he let himself go a bit too much? Still a great front man - off stage. Nikki, you get a little bit of everything with him, but he has the talent still to back up most of what he says and does. Though I am curious why they have dumped the new song from their set lists after just a few dates on the tour. This 'may' be the last tour, and it will satisfy most fans. But it's not the last time you will hear these songs. Expect side projects to keep these songs alive until a reunion of some sorts down the road.

If you’ve read Keith Richards’ autobiography, Life - and I’d thoroughly recommend it if you haven’t - you’ll know all about his attitude to his legendary drug-taking; fairly blase, for the most part, although he also largely insists that he only did them for utilitarian purposes - for the sake of staying up long enough to get songs finished, or to knock him out when there were too many ideas bouncing around his brain. I don’t know if any of the members of Motley Crue have read his book, either, but they’ll likely have treated Richards’ admission that hedonism wasn’t his sole motivating factor as a show of weakness; indeed, hedonism is the very foundation on which the L.A. band were built. There are far more classic tales of rock and roll excess than I can list here - bass player Nikki Sixx once had to be effectively resurrected after a heroin overdose with two shots of adrenaline straight to the heart - and all indications are that the lifestyles that made the Crue one of the most notorious bands in rock and roll history back in the eighties have begun to catch up with them, decades later. They’re currently undertaking what will be their final ever tour, running through to 2015, before retirement; as un-Crue a concept as that seems, though, they’ll be bringing their larger than life personas to the stage with them for one last run through the hits; expect a serious shot of glamorous debauchery from a band that nobody expected to be old before they died.

I saw Motley Crue on the Theatre of Pain tour when I was in High School and was blown away. I have been hooked from that moment. This tour is AWESOME!!! They are tighter than ever and engage the crowd from the very beginning! Alice Cooper was great as always but Motley set the standard and showed why they are the Gods of Heavy Metal and Glam Rock. Nikki Sixx played a Bass that shot Fire while he was shredding center stage. On With The Show was amazing and was electrifying the crowd. No one sat down the entire show. Shoreline at Mountain View was a perfect intimate venue for them. Their encore was on a mini stage in the middle of the crowd next to me. Motley truly showed that they love their fans and playing music. Mick Mars is a virtuoso on the axe. Even if you have seen them before go. If you haven't you MUST SEE THIS BAND. I have seen them a couple of times and they are true artists and take you on a journey that only they can. They play everything on this tour. Dr. Feelgood, Shout at the Devil, Saints of Los Angeles and Smoking in the Boys Room. They use smoke, fire, lasers and female dancers throughout the show. Nikki gives a different talk every night about being in the band and what the fans mean to him. Mick Mars does a solo that you will not believe. I am looking to find them somewhere else on this tour. It is worth every penny and MORE!!

Having seen Motley Crüe over 20 times since the mid 80's, this was bittersweet. The show was good, there were a few things that stood out. Vince's voice sounded a little tired and even more important, I really missed having the Tommy drum show at the Hollywood Bowl. Last time I saw them there they did have the roller coaster drums and this time with all the hype about his set up, he was not able to do it at the bowl. He also did not engage with the crowd nearly as much as usual, he just stayed back and played. I would have liked to hear more from him. All in all though, they played all the songs I wanted to hear and it was a fun evening. The end of an era and sad to see them go when they are still young and can clearly put on a great live show.

Motley Crue were my first concert. They were awesome then and were awesome in Greenville twenty four years later. A spectacle of sound, fire, explosions, and mayhem. Most of the crowd was on their feet and singing along for the whole concert.

Alice Cooper opened the show and brought all of his tricks: the snake, the guillotine, the Frankenstein monster, etc.

I've had a thought all week of how great it is to be able to see these guys on stage in 2014 and it might as well be 1990, 1975, etc. As a sports fan, I can't see Herschel Walker, Rickey Henderson, or Joe Montana perform like they did in their prime, but I can still see Alice Cooper and Motley Crue replicate their prime.

If you get the chance to see this show, go!

For one thing the first band (not Alice Cooper) was so loud and horrible we had to go outside to where the merchandise was sold just to get away. Alice Cooper was amazing as always... Mötley Crue was AMAZING! I've never seen them live! Their pyrotechnics was awesome, they covered alot of the years of music. Nikki spoke about how they ended up together. The only thing I was disappointed about was Tommy's drumset was small because people that have seen them live before absolutely raved about him and his drums: he didn't have one solo..and really didn't even get to see him excel through smoke. Overall I would definitely see them again. Seeing them perform live was great.

Seeing the boys one last time was great, Motley Crue did not disappoint. Having Alice Cooper start the concert was cool, it was my first time seeing him perform live and he sounds great. If they come to your town do yourself a huge favor and buy tickets to this show. All their top hits and a few from their latest albums made for one serious night of Heavy Metal!

Get there early, you'll definitely want the skull made out of band members' photos. I love my shirt!

Mötley Crüe Announce Retirement And Farewell Tour After A 33 Year Career

Motley Crue

Mötley Crüe are embarking on a 72-date world tour to finish off their illustrious career as one of heavy metal's greatest bands of all time.

American rock band Mötley Crüe have finally called it a day on their legendary career that spans over three decades. The four-piece will be saying goodbye in style as they are set to embark on a 72 date world tour which starts later this year (2014).

Motley Crue

Singer Vince Neil, guitarists Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars, and drummer Tommy Lee, famous for hits like 'Girls, Girls, Girls' and 'Kickstart My Heart', made the announcement at a press conference in Hollywood inside Beacher's Madhouse Theater.

The stage displayed headstones for each band member as they told the world that this is the end, and the four rockers are dead set on this been the final tour as they have each signed a contract to never use the name Mötley Crüe again, according to TMZ .

This definitely rules out a reunion tour ever happening in the future then!

This is not a joke as Tommy Lee took to twitter to confirm that this is the very last time they will be on stage together, "This ain't no farewell tour! Those are for bands that lie to their fans and come back in 5-10 years! This is the FINAL tour! It's over!" he posted.

To make this tour even more special, they have acquired the help of another rock icon. Alice Cooper, who is known for hit songs 'School's Out' and 'Poison', will be their opening act.

Tickets for select forthcoming shows go on sale this Friday (Jan 31st) and the rest are expected to be available for purchase on Saturday. Mötley Crüe want to give all their legions of fans the chance to see them perform for one last time, so tickets for the shows will be as low as $15 each.

The band, who were formed in 1981 by bassist Nikki Sixx in Los Angeles, have left a legacy of one of the most notorious heavy metal groups of the 80s, who embodied the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and sold over 75 million albums in their illustrious 33 year career.

10 Years Ago: Motley Crue Deludes Themselves With Final Tour Plan

When Motley Crue announced their plans to embark on a final tour on Jan. 28, 2014, they positioned themselves as veteran road warriors making a unanimous decision to go out while they were still at the top of their game.

In hindsight, they were actually planting the seeds for a comeback tour that would dwarf every other trek of their career.

But boy, they sure did sound convincing during the dramatic press conference where they announced their final road trip, which featured support from Alice Cooper and would end on New Year's Eve 2015 in their hometown of Los Angeles. Arriving to the press conference in a hearse and sitting behind tombstones emblazoned with their names, Motley Crue swore up and down before dozens of reporters that the simply titled Final Tour would actually signal the end of their touring career.

"We started talking about it a few years ago," frontman Vince Neil said. "You know, we didn't want to be one of those bands that maybe have one guy left in it or somebody's brother or something like that. We want to go out with the four founding members of Motley Crue and go out on top, and leave a legacy of a band called Motley Crue."

"We want to have some dignity," bassist Nikki Sixx added. "We feel there's a lot of bands out there that don't have dignity. We started this band 'cause it's something we believed in — rock 'n' roll — and we want to call it a day and be proud. It's pretty embarrassing what's happening with the state of music with bands out there. I don't want to name names because I just don't think it's really my place, but you know there's so many bands out there that just, they're ripping you off. And we're not gonna do that."

READ MORE: The Best Song From Every Motley Crue Album

To illustrate their point, all four band members ended the press conference by signing a "Cessation of Touring Agreement" that would legally prevent them from touring under the name Motley Crue after Dec. 31, 2015. "That's not a phrase that anyone has used before," band attorney Doug Mark said. "There has never been such a thing as far as I know. It's an agreement that binds the four of them to not utilize the trademark for touring in the future."

The only way for Motley Crue to nullify the Cessation of Touring Agreement would be for all four members to agree to return to touring — a conspicuously massive loophole that the band nonetheless insisted would have no effect on their future. "If we did agree [to another tour], the way we've set it up — including this conversation right now — we'd have so much egg on our face," Sixx told Rolling Stone . "We have so much pride that that alone would stop it."

But everybody knows Motley Crue never shied away from making a mess.

Motley Crue Quickly Reneged on Their Cessation of Touring Agreement

A funny thing happened in the years following Motley Crue's alleged retirement from touring: Young rock fans embraced them more than ever. That was due in large part to Netflix's 2019 adaptation of their scandalous 2001 memoir  The Dirt . The raunchy band biopic sparked a massive boost in streams and sales of Motley's music, particularly among the 18-to-34-year-old demographic.

How could Motley Crue, a band of the people, deny these new fans the opportunity to see them in the flesh? Deciding that egg on their face for money in the bank was a worthy trade, the rockers announced their official return in November 2019 by blowing up their Cessation of Touring Agreement and plotting a stadium tour with Def Leppard , Poison and Joan Jett .

READ MORE: 46 Farewell Tours: When Rock Stars Said Goodbye

After two years of COVID-related delays, the Stadium Tour finally launched in June 2022. It earned  $173.5 million and sold 1.3 million tickets, becoming the most successful trek of any of the bands' careers. Some fans scoffed at Motley Crue's eagerness to go back on their word only a few years after allegedly calling it quits — but hey, at least they still had "all four founding members," right?

This, too, would prove negotiable in October 2022, when guitarist Mick Mars announced his retirement from touring . Motley Crue announced they would soldier on with  John 5  in Mars' stead, plotting another world tour with Def Leppard for 2023. Things got uglier that April when Mars filed a lawsuit against his bandmates, claiming they were ripping him off financially and trying to fully oust him from the band, while also accusing them of onstage fakery during the 2022 Stadium Tour.

The lawsuit extended into 2024, as did Motley Crue. The band continued touring with John 5, shirking allegations of onstage fakery, insisting Mars' team was feeding him lies and writing new music with longtime producer Bob Rock . Through it all, they kept shaping their legacy — whether it's the same legacy they envisioned during that fateful 2014 press conference remains to be seen.

A Complete Timeline Of The Whirlwind Changes To Motley Crue's Lineup

Motley Crue standing together

Since they debuted, Motley Crue has defined the excess and decadence of the heavy metal era of music. Widely known for their crazy stage antics and penchant for mind-altering substances, the boys from Crue can more than make their way around a party. They were no slouches musically, either, writing some of the biggest hits in heavy metal history. No soundtrack of the '80s is complete without hits like "Girls, Girls, Girls," "Dr. Feelgood," and "Kickstart My Heart." Even their slower songs, like "Home Sweet Home," set new standards for power ballads.

For the majority of their career, Crue consisted of Tommy Lee Jones on drums, Mick Mars on guitar, Nikki Sixx on bass, and Vince Neil on vocals. However, that is far from the only lineup that has performed under the Crue banner. Since they first debuted in 1981, Nikki Sixx is the only member to have consistently been a part of the band through 2023. Both Tommy Lee and Vince have left the band at various points, and Mick Mars retired from the road before the band's 2023 tour. Between 1981 and 2023, here's the complete timeline of the whirlwind changes to Motley Crue's lineup.

Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee first get together

The two original founding members of what would eventually become Motley Crue were Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee . Before they started playing together, they were previously active in the music scene but in different bands. Tommy Lee played in a band called Suite 19, and Sixx played in a band called London. However, both bands dissolved after only some local success, and soon Sixx and Tommy Lee found themselves connected through Greg Leon.

Leon had previously been the guitarist for Tommy Lee's band Suite 19 but had teamed up with Sixx following their demise. After Tommy Lee's short stint in another band, which saw him get kicked out after hooking up with the lead singer's sister, Leon gave his phone number to Sixx. Soon, they were jamming together. Unfortunately for Leon, Sixx quickly kicked him out of the band for not fitting the right aesthetic.

However, as Leon recalled in a July 2007 interview , he stopped playing with Tommy Lee due to joining the band Quiet Riot. Quiet Riot had just lost legendary guitarist Randy Rhoads to Ozzy Osbourne's band, and Leon was slotted to take his place. While Leon went on to play with Quiet Riot and Dokken, Sixx and Tommy Lee would later become Motley Crue.

The Robin Moore and Mick Mars incident

One of the most memorable scenes in the 2019 film " The Dirt ," which was based on Motley Crue's autobiographical book released 18 years earlier in 2001, was Mick Mars' entrance into the band. He shows up one day and starts jamming with them as the second guitarist, only to immediately kick the other guitarist out of the band, telling him it wasn't big enough for the both of them. While many people might have thought this was just a funny story, it turns out it was actually true.

After Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx kicked Greg Leon to the curb, they replaced him with Robin Moore. However, for all his skill he didn't really fit the band's ethos, and Sixx and Tommy Lee remained on the hunt for someone else while they bided their time with Moore. As soon as Mars showed up it was quickly the end of the line for Moore. Mars learned the opening riff to "Stick to Your Guns" and blew away Tommy Lee with his playing. On the spot, he kicked Moore out of the band, more or less how it was shown in the film. Now, they were a three-piece of Tommy Lee, Sixx, and Mars. All they still needed was a lead singer.

1981 – 1992: The classic Motley Crue lineup

After Mick Mars had effectively established himself as the sole and only guitarist in Motley Crue, the core of him, Nikki Sixx, and Tommy Lee, was finally set. As noted in the band's autobiography, "The Dirt," they began rehearsing with a singer named O'Dean and even recorded several songs in the studio. However, like Robin Moore before him, O'Dean did not fit in with the attitude and aesthetic of the Crue, leading to his dismissal. The final straw for Sixx was when O'Dean's obsession with his trademark white gloves started to interfere with Sixx's visions for the recording.

Needing a replacement, Tommy Lee remembered an old classmate of his from high school who he knew was a singer. His name was Vince Neil. As soon as they started playing together, Vince, Tommy Lee, Sixx, and Mick Mars all hit it off, and Motley Crue was officially born. By the end of 1981, their debut album, "Too Fast for Love," had been released and the guys started on their first tour. Their second album, "Shout at the Devil," came out two years later and sold more than a million copies.

The classic Crue lineup lasted from 1981 to 1992 and saw the band reach monumental heights of superstardom. However, the good times also bred widespread personal issues, prompting the band to clean up their act at the end of the '80s in time for the release of "Dr. Feelgood." Unfortunately, the disagreements were far from over.

1992 – 1996: Enter John Corabi

Following the release of "Dr. Feelgood" in 1989, Motley Crue was seemingly back on top. The band had a top 10 hit and was soon back embarking on world tours. However, when they began working to record a follow-up, Vince Neil and the band split ways. After getting dismissed, Neil started to spiral out of control, taking a porn star with him to Hawaii and relapsing into substance abuse. He eventually worked to get sober again, but he was out of the band.

Part of the reason the band let Neil go was his increasing devotion to driving race cars, and he soon embarked on his own solo career. While away from the Crue, he released two albums: "Exposed" in 1993 and "Carved in Stone" in 1995. John Corabi replaced Neil in the Crue, and in 1994, the band released "Motley Crue" to immediate commercial success. However, the marriage of the Crue and Corabi was not to be. In 1996, just two years after the release of "Motley Crue," Corabi was kicked out of the band. Facing criticism from the heavy metal crowd, Motley Crue needed a new lead singer... again. Luckily, they would soon find a familiar face amongst all the noise.

1997 – 2000: Welcome back Vince

When the Corabi years ended in 1996, there was really only one choice to take over as Motley Crue's vocalist again: Vince Neil. Fresh off the release of his 1995 album "Carved in Stone," Neil rejoined Motley Crue in 1997 in time to release "Generation Swine," the band's seventh studio album and first since "Motley Crue" with Corabi in 1994. And while "Generation Swine" sold well at first, the personal problems in the band started to overtake the music once again.

Much of the dysfunction was led by Vince Neil and Tommy Lee, but Nikki Sixx also got in on the action, too. Sixx found himself in trouble with the law for his stage antics, while Lee was infamously married to Pamela Anderson , which culminated in an embarrassing sex tape being released. Neil, for some bizarre reason, thought that it was also the time for him to release a competing sex tape, which he did in 1998.

Still, the band released a greatest hits collection in 1998, and the following year went on a massive 40-city tour with old friends the Scorpions, which featured stops at iconic venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado and the 1999 Rock Fest. They released a live album cut from that tour, known as "Entertainment or Death," but lineup changes were once again on the horizon for the Crue in the not-so-distant future.

2000 – 2002: Randy Castillo and Samantha Maloney's turn

As Tommy Lee's personal struggles started to mount throughout 1998 and 1999, he became increasingly distant from the band. He was in the middle of his high profile and tumultuous relationship and subsequent marriage to former "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson , and things were beginning to take a toll. On May 20, 1998, the Associated Press reported that Tommy Lee was sentenced to six months in jail for domestic assault against Anderson after previously being arrested that February.

After Tommy Lee got out of jail, he embarked on a tour with Crue, but his heart was no longer in it. He was working on an album for his side project, Methods of Mayhem, when not performing with the Crue, and he soon called it quits from the band after getting into a fistfight with Vince Neil.

For his replacement, first the band went with Randy Castillo, the former drummer for Ozzy Osbourne , but his tenure was short-lived. He became sick after appearing on the album "New Tattoo," and after being unable to perform, was soon replaced by Samantha Maloney. Following Castillo's death in 2002, the band went on an official hiatus for the first time since they formed in 1981.

2004 – 2015: The classic lineup reunites

Tommy Lee's departure from Motley Crue was relatively short-lived. In the years the band was on hiatus, both Vince Neil and Nikki Sixx performed as solo artists, and Neil released "Live at the Whiskey: One Night Only" in 2003. The next year, Sixx released "Here Comes the Brides" with his new band, Brides of Destruction. Tommy Lee released the self-titled debut for Methods of Mayhem in 1999, and he followed that up with a solo album "Never a Dull Moment" in 2002.

Then, in 2004, the band surprised many when they announced that the classic lineup was going to be reuniting. They released another greatest hits album, "Red, White, and Crue," and went on a massive supporting tour of the same name. In 2008, they released their first studio album since 1997's "Generation Swine," when "Saints of Los Angeles" hit the shelves. "Saints of Los Angeles" got them a Grammy nomination, though they didn't win, and they continued touring through 2014.

Yet, in 2014 the Crue made one of their most shocking announcements of all time: They were officially retiring, for good. As reported by Rolling Stone, the band collectively signed a "cessation of touring agreement" which was supposed to prohibit them from touring under the Motley Crue banner following their final 2015 world tour. The final tour started in July 2014 and ended on New Year's Eve 2015, and was supposed to be the end of the Crue — supposed to be, at least.

Motley Crue comes out of retirement

Even though Motley Crue signed a "cessation of touring agreement" before their farewell tour between 2014 and 2015, everyone knew there was no way to truly kill the Crue for good. That's why it wasn't very surprising when they announced in late 2019 that they were going to be back on the road once again. According to an official announcement on their page, the band claimed that due to popular demand, they were coming out of retirement and spreading the gospel of Motley once again.

The announcement claimed the band had reunited the year prior in order to participate in the making of the movie "The Dirt," and that sparked their interest to play together. Compounded with the huge success of the movie and citing its success on Rotten Tomatoes, the band felt they owed it to their new legions of fans to give them the chance to see them play live once again. They posted a video to YouTube of them literally blowing up the non-touring agreement, and beginning in the summer of 2020, they returned to the concert circuit. Once again, the Crue was on the loose, filling stadiums with their debauchery and excess.

2006 – 2007: Will Hunt steps up

Unfortunately, even the best of us can't predict our injuries, and Tommy Lee was forced to miss multiple dates in April 2006 and June 2007 after various injuries. Luckily, both times they were a ready and willing replacement available: Will Hunt. In April 2006, Tommy Lee was experiencing a bout of tendinitis in his right hand, and after having a tribute band drummer fill in the first night, Motley Crue turned to Hunt to finish out the remaining Canadian tour dates.

Then, just over a year later, Tommy Lee injured his left hand and was forced to miss even more dates. Luckily, Hunt was once again available to come to the rescue. Tommy Lee still made an appearance onstage at the show, but he was behind the microphone, not his drum kit. During a 2022 interview with Darren Paltowitz , Hunt recalled the experience. While he was already familiar with some of the Crue catalog, he had to scramble to learn certain songs. To make things even more hectic, he barely had 24 hours to prepare for the first gig, leaving him little time to familiarize himself with the new tunes. Luckily, Tommy Lee was able to provide him help through the use of in-ear monitors, and Hunt successfully saved the day.

August 2009: Morgan Rose bails out Tommy Lee

In August 2009, Tommy Lee once again found himself on the wrong end of an injury, and he was forced to miss even more Motley Crue shows. This time, his injuries stemmed from playing with fireworks. The band was in the middle of the Crue Fest 2 festival tour, and Tommy Lee was unable to perform as his left hand was too heavily bandaged due to his burns.

If it was up to Tommy Lee, he definitely wanted to play, but doctors feared he would aggravate his injury even worse if he performed live. Once again, the Crue had to call on a substitute to fill his spot. This time, instead of turning to Will Hunt, the band pegged Morgan Rose from the band Sevendust to fill in. As drummer for Sevendust, Morgan had released eight albums and was more than equipped to do the job. Like before, Tommy Lee wasn't completely absent from the shows. He appeared onstage, not only to explain his absence from behind the kit but also to help on a few numbers, including "Girls, Girls, Girls" and "Home Sweet Home."

October 2015: Glen Sobel helps the Crue bid farewell

While Motley Crue was in the midst of their farewell tour in October of 2015, once again the injury bug reared its head. On October 14, Tommy Lee Tweeted that he was not going to be able to play the show in Buffalo due to the doctor's orders. At the show, he took to the stage to elaborate on what had happened.

Tommy Lee told the audience that he had awoken suddenly in the night, only to realize he was experiencing another bout of tendinitis inflammation. After getting an anti-inflammatory shot to help with the pain, the doctor told him there was no way he could play the show. He was very apologetic to the crowd, and it was obvious that he really wanted to be behind his kit rocking with his brothers, but he didn't have a choice.

He implored the fans to give a huge hand to his replacement, Glen Sobel, who was, as usual, found at the last second. As Sobel relayed in an interview with Sweetwater, he was touring with the Crue as the drummer for the opener Alice Cooper  when he filled in for Tommy Lee, leaving him to perform double duty. At first, he thought it was a joke when the Crue's production manager asked him to fill in, but he soon realized it was for real and immediately began preparing, making a set of "cheat sheets" to help.

October 2022: John Five takes over for Mick Mars

All good things have to come to an end sometime. Unfortunately, it seems like the days of the original Motley Crue touring again are over. In October 2022, Mick Mars announced his retirement. The remaining members released a joint statement where they thanked Mars for his years of service and remarked on his immense contributions to the band. Mars had been in the Crue for 41 years prior to leaving and was the only member to have stayed since the very beginning along with Nikki Sixx.

Mars retired due to health reasons, which included having ankylosing spondylitis, a type of spinal arthritis. In his place, the band announced that John 5 would be taking over guitar duties. A star in his own right, John 5 had previously played guitar for rock and roll legends like Rob Zombie , Marilyn Manson , and David Lee Roth . John 5 played his first show with Motley Crue on February 10, 2022, and seemed to fit right in with the band, inaugurating a new and memorable era of the Crue.

Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard Announce 2023 World Tour

The two bands will hit Mexico, South America, the UK and Europe next year

Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard Announce 2023 World Tour

After conquering stadiums in North America over the summer, Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard are taking their co-headlining tour worldwide in 2023. The two bands have just announced dates in Mexico, South America, the UK and Europe for next year.

The newly announced run kicks off with February 18th and 21st shows in Mexico City and Monterrey, respectively, before hitting South America from late February through mid March. From there, the two bands will hit the UK and Europe from late May through early July.

After a two-year delay due to the pandemic, Mötley Crüe and Def Leppard finally kicked off their North American “Stadium Tour” this past June. The outing began with Crüe drummer Tommy Lee only able to perform a few songs each night, as he had broken his ribs in a fall just prior to the launch. Eventually, he was able to play full sets, but then made headlines for encouraging fans to expose their privates during the second half of the tour. Overall, the North American trek was mega-successful, raking in $173.5 million in ticket sales.

“We had an incredible time playing The Stadium Tour in North America this summer and we truly can’t wait to take the show around the globe with The WORLD Tour in 2023,” stated Mötley Crüe in announcing the global outing. “Crüeheads in Latin America and Europe: Get ready!!”

Nikki Sixx Hints Setlist Changes for Motley Crue 2024 Tour: How to Get Tickets

M otley Crue’s upcoming tour dates might have a little bit of spice in them. Songwriter/bassist Nikki Sixx just hinted at some potential changes to the setlist for the tour, which will resume in May. Previously, Motley Crue’s last two tours have been very similar setlist-wise, spanning 15 songs that include hits like “Home Sweet Home” and “Dr. Feelgood”.

Yesterday, Sixx posted on X that it was a “great week for Crue” and that they “worked on new songs with [John] 5 for the summer shows-Me and Tommy came up with a cool setlist and the stage set is moving along nicely.” Could we be getting new live music and a new setlist starting in May?

The Motley Crue 2024 Tour will resume on May 3 at Hard Rock Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The tour will close on October 13 at Aftershock 2024 in Sacramento, California.

Fans can get their tickets to see Motley Crue live in 2024 through Ticketmaster and Stubhub . It doesn’t look like there are any presale events for this tour, and tickets are still available through these platforms.

We recommend checking out Stubhub first, especially if your chosen tour date is close to selling out. Stubhub is a top-notch resource for finding third-party tickets that are legitimate and scam-free.

How Milwaukee Brewers' American Family Field became one of country's top concert stadiums

motley crue tours over the years

In 2023, American Family Field had its biggest year ever for concerts — and it was one of the top-grossing stadiums for concerts in the world.

It may be the new normal.

After hosting four concerts last year — including the first two-night stadium run ever in Milwaukee, with Morgan Wallen, and shows with George Strait and Pink that both broke attendance records — American Family Field is ready to host four more in 2024.

The first two are April 12 and 13, the stadium tour kickoff for country superstar Luke Combs. Kenny Chesney returns in June, this time with Zac Brown Band ; and Green Day is coming in August with the Smashing Pumpkins.

Going forward, depending on routing and the teams' schedule, the Brewers could book four to six major tours a year, predicted Jason Hartlund, who oversees concerts at the stadium as executive vice president — chief commercial officer for the Brewers.

“We’ve really bent over backwards for artists and production teams to be as hospitable and as easy a process (to stage a concert) as possible,” Hartlund said. “That reputation is starting to get out into the marketplace. It’s helped us.”

Last year, it helped 43,000-seat American Family Field become the 19th top-grossing stadium for concerts in the United States, and 35th in the world, according to concert trade magazine Pollstar, ranking prominently among football stadiums with larger seating capacities. The stadium sold 178,107 concert tickets, collectively grossing $35.4 million.

It's a remarkable development for a 23-year-old stadium in a market Milwaukee's size, especially since there are two stadiums in must-play Chicago — the Cubs' Wrigley Field and the Bears' home field (for now), Soldier Field — that routinely draw Milwaukee fans for shows.

But between the growth of the stadium tour sector of the concert industry — and the $500 million stadium funding bill signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers last December — American Family Field's future as a live music destination is promising.

"Philosophically, when we enter into an agreement with a sports team or stadium, we want to know that they want to be good partners," said Charlie Goldstone, co-president of Live Nation-backed Madison promoter FPC Live, which handled the Pink and Wallen concerts last year and is promoting Green Day's this year.

"It's more than just financial. Will they help promote the shows? Will the team be amenable to uses of the field and the locker rooms? When an artist gets there will they feel welcome? … With the Brewers, the answer is always yes."

Years with few concerts at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark

For much of the stadium's existence, a big concert each year wasn't a guarantee. After it opened in 2001, Miller Park (renamed American Family Field in 2021) nabbed a few tours its first few years, including Strait, *NSYNC and Bruce Springsteen.

But after 2003, the stadium went a decade without hosting tours, although there were some special events, including Farm Aid in 2010, and birthday bashes for Harley-Davidson and Miller Brewing.

Then in 2013, Kenny Chesney headlined a stadium tour stop at Miller Park for the first time, the beginning of what's become a fruitful relationship with one of the stadium's most reliable promoters, the Messina Touring Group.

In addition to Chesney's headlining shows at the Brewers ballpark in 2016, 2018, 2022 and now this year, Messina brought Ed Sheeran to the stadium in 2018. The promoter also was responsible for Eric Church's second stadium-headlining show ever in 2022, and for the Strait show last year — one of only eight dates the country legend did in 2023 with Chris Stapleton.

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel last year, Louis Messina, head of AEG-backed Messina Touring Group, said doing shows at the stadium was "comfortable" and that the venue itself was "fan-friendly."

"Some stadiums, it's like pulling teeth to do a show there. In Milwaukee, it's not like that," Messina said. "From the top with management all the way down to the groundskeepers, they work with us and make it easy for us to produce shows."

"We're not just another tenant in the building. … That's really important, not only to me and the artists but to my team, box office people, production people — everybody."

After Chesney broke the tour drought, Live Nation, the world's largest concert promoter, put Paul McCartney and One Direction shows in the stadium, in 2013 and 2015.

A gamechanger for Wisconsin concerts in 2018

Then in 2018, Live Nation became a majority stakeholder of long-running Madison promoter Frank Productions, parent to FPC Live — and the Brewers took notice.

"The ballpark said they wanted to be in business, and it opened up a new level of shows that were not coming to the state," FPC Live co-president Scott Leslie said. By that time, touring was a rapidly growing business at other ballparks, Leslie noted, including Wrigley Field and Fenway Park in Boston.

"The Brewers saw that this was being done successfully among their peers, so why not them?" Leslie said.

FPC Live brought the only Billy Joel Midwestern concert of 2019 to American Family Field, and a Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett package to the ballpark in 2022. Aside from when the pandemic derailed the touring industry for most of 2020 and much of 2021, the ballpark has hosted at least one stadium tour every year since 2018, and nearly all of them have been at capacity.

"Success breeds success," Hartlund said. "Where artists may have been hesitant to come to the Milwaukee market in the past, we have a catalog of success that tours can play Chicago and Milwaukee. … And because we have had success with shows in the past people are getting more comfortable moving off weekends."

Last year's Pink show at American Family Field, for instance, was on a Monday — and it stopped at Wrigley Field the prior Saturday. But the Milwaukee date was still a smash, with Pink breaking an attendance record at the stadium, performing for 46,644 people.

Leslie suggests that Pink's past success in the market — her Fiserv Forum show in 2019 was the top-grossing concert at the arena that year — likely gave her team more confidence to book a show in the city's biggest venue.

"With Fiserv Forum, there's a brand-new arena with a high volume of really amazing shows that let the market open up in a bigger way," FPC Live's Goldstone said.

The $524 million Milwaukee Bucks arena opened in 2018, bringing more shows nearly every year than the Bradley Center ever did during a single year. And the American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Maier Festival Park has seen a surge of shows, too, following a $51.3 million renovation, reaching its highest volume since 2004. And even though the amphitheater has nabbed some tour dates routed through other stadiums, Hartlund suggests their booking ability has benefited.

"The rising tide lifts all ships," Hartlund said. "Having a new arena is great for the city, having a revamped American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Summerfest is fantastic. The more shows we put in here, the better."

Stadium concert tours are surging around the world

Hartlund says the Brewers have been more aggressive about concert bookings coming out of the pandemic, driven not just by a desire to grow non-baseball revenue, but a growing comfort that field conditions won't be affected by more events.

And there are significantly more events at stadiums around the globe, which the Brewers are also benefiting from. Grosses from the world’s top 100 stadiums for concerts were up 35% in 2023 to $3.62 billion, according to Pollstar. The number of tickets sold for those tours also increased 22.2% to 29.1 million.

Since touring resumed after the pandemic, Dave Brooks, senior director of live and touring for Billboard, estimates that at least an artist or two in different genres, including country, pop and Latin music, have been able to rise up to the stadium level every year, while some artists have experimented with packages to help fill stadium seats, like Chesney is doing with Zac Brown Band and Green Day with the Pumpkins.

"The financial incentives are obvious," Brooks said. "You can get a much larger audience for the fraction of the price it costs you to do multiple arena shows. The costs are somewhat higher for a stadium concert than an arena show, but the increase in attendance is like double depending on how big the stadium is, and you can make almost double the money."

Promoters also like the "huge consumer marketing databases" that MLB and NFL teams have from selling tickets to their games to help them sell shows, Brooks continued, and fans have shown with their wallets that they don't mind the stadium concert experience.

"The use of video boards and technology makes the concert feel more intimate," Brooks said of more recent stadium tours.

New stadium developments could lead to more concerts

Hartlund is hopeful that the Brewers' new centerfield scoreboard — one of the largest in Major League Baseball — will appeal to some promoters. As of the Journal Sentinel interview, he was unsure if any tours would use the scoreboard this year, but Strait and Stapleton did last year.

And while the team's new QR code-based parking payment system was temporarily suspended due to technical issues for opening day — and will not be in operation for the Combs shows — Hartlund said that, when it's up and running, it will cut down on backups into the ballpark. Traffic into the park has triggered some backlash in the past, most notably for Sheeran's show in 2018, prompting the team to issue an apology.

And then there's the $500 million public-funding plan for the ballpark to support long-term renovations and improvements, which will include "winterizing" the venue so it could operate beyond its typical April-to-October timeframe.

The stadium's retractable roof has already been an asset — Hartlund suggests it was a key reason why Combs opted to kick off the tour there this year — but following renovations, American Family Field theoretically could host concerts in March or November.

And yes, some stadium tours have been routed through the Midwest in November; Stapleton and Strait played the indoor U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in November 2021, and Joel played the NFL stadium with Stevie Nicks last November.

"Promoters are aware of the plan for that to take place," Hartlund said, although a definitive timeline has yet to be set. "It's all about the comfort levels for the artist and the fans. If the building is winterized and heated to appropriate levels, it's no different from an arena show in November or March."

Motley Crue + Def Leppard Win Rock Tour of the Year for ‘The Stadium Tour’

Motley Crue and Def Leppard 's joint 2022 " Stadium Tour " won Rock Tour of the Year at the 2023 Pollstar Awards  this week (Feb. 22). Also at the ceremony, the Eagles  took home the Pollstar Milestone Award and Dave Grohl honored his manager.

The annual Pollstar Awards, organized by the live music trade publication Pollstar , have recognized and celebrated the live entertainment businesses' most innovative artists, venues, tours, companies and executives over the last 34 years.

The Stadium Tour — Motley Crue and Def Leppard's twice-postponed  North American trek together — was also one of the highest-grossing tours of 2022 and earned over $173 million  on the road.

" The World Tour ," another joint tour from Crue and Leppard, is now traversing the globe with Motley Crue's replacement guitarist John 5 in for a retired Mick Mars . It continues through Europe this summer.

Crue + Leppard Win Best Rock Tour

The Stadium Tour won at Pollstar in more ways than one — Joan Jett received Support/Special Guest Act of the Year for her support on the tour alongside fellow opening acts Poison and Classless Act .

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Eagles received the Milestone Award in recognition of more than 50 years as a band. Accepting it the Eagles' Don Henley said, "I just want to say how grateful I am for the fact that we've been able to do this for over 50 years now."

Grohl was at Pollstar to give the Personal Manager of the Year award to his longtime manager, John Silva of Silva Artist Management.

Dave Grohl Gets Up at Awards Show

During the show, Grohl came to the stage calling it "the one fucking awards ceremony that's actually fun," according to a press release.

The Foo Fighter  added, "I'm here to honor a person that I've known for 33 years, the only manager I've ever had, Mr. John Silva. … We've had some incredible triumphs, and some devastating crises, but the one thing that has kept us together over the years has been love."

The Pollstar Awards are the only "peer-voted" live entertainment industry awards, Pollstar says, meaning winners are decided by other industry professionals. See the full list of 2023 winners here . Other winners included Harry Styles (Major Tour of the Year), Post Malone (Hip-Hop Tour of the Year), Lizzo (R&B Tour of the Year) and Billie Eilish (Pop Tour of the Year).

NIKKI SIXX Says New MÖTLEY CRÜE Music Has Been Described As 'Powerful Cross Between Country And Hip-Hop'

Nikki Sixx says that the upcoming music from MÖTLEY CRÜE has been described as "a powerful cross between country and hip-hop".

The 65-year-old CRÜE bassist, who is the band's chief songwriter, took to his account on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter , on Thursday (April 4),to write, presumably with his tongue firmly in his cheek: "New CRÜE coming up right around the corner. People who have heard it say it's a powerful cross between country and hip hop."

More than a year ago, MÖTLEY CRÜE recorded three new songs with longtime producer Bob Rock , including "Dogs Of War" and a cover of BEASTIE BOYS ' "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" :

This past January, MÖTLEY CRÜE guitarist John 5 told The Metal Voice that he and his bandmates are continuing to work on fresh material. "We're writing songs, and a new song will be coming out soon," he said. "It's really great, and I'm super excited and I can't wait."

Regarding the musical direction of the new MÖTLEY CRÜE tracks, John 5 said: "Oh, it's heavy, great songs. Heavy, great songs… I would say you could easily hear this off the 'Dr. Feelgood' album."

Earlier in January, John 5 told Illinois Entertainer about MÖTLEY CRÜE 's current songwriting process: "Just the other day, Nikki called me and he was playing guitar over the phone and he'll play a riff, and he'll sing this melody, and it sounded like it could be something off of [ MÖTLEY CRÜE 's debut album] 'Too Fast For Love' . It's just natural for him to write these songs that I have loved and lots of other people have loved. I think we're always going to make new music, because, man, this guy is pumping out amazing lyrics and great music. When we all get together, it's pretty magical."

In December, MÖTLEY CRÜE drummer Tommy Lee told Desert Sun about the three new songs he and his bandmates recorded with Rock : "Wait until you hear it. It's insane. It's not a full album, but that might be down the road a bit. We're always writing and doing stuff, so that's always a possibility down the road. But we just went to the studio not too long ago and recorded three insane tracks and one of them is called 'Dogs Of War' . We're just finishing up the video for it. For those jonesing for some new CRÜE , people are going to bug out. John 5 is playing on it, the guitar work is incredible and it sounds sick."

In September, John 5 told Meltdown of Detroit's WRIF radio station about the new MÖTLEY CRÜE music: "I don't know when it's gonna come out, but everything is a plan. Everything is mapped out and structured, and everything is, 'We're gonna do it here and there,' and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. So the songs are recorded, mixed, mastered. And they're so good. I can't wait for them to come out. They're so good. I'm really excited about 'em."

He continued: "Who knows what's going to happen? I don't know if we'll just release singles or an album. It's up to those guys, so I don't know. We just record and see what happens. But these songs that we recorded are so good; they're heavy and the melodies and everybody's just killing it on these songs."

Asked how much how much input he had during the songwriting process, John 5 said: "We all sat in a room and did it together. 'Cause me and Nikki have written for years and years and years together. So it was nothing new. And me and Tommy worked in the studio together many times as well. So it was nothing new being in the studio, but it was new with Bob Rock .

"What was so wild was we got in a room… It was like total old school, man," he explained. "You get in the live room and there's my amp and there's Nikki 's amp and there's Tommy 's drums, there's a mic… 'Cause I'm so used to just playing in the control room. And it's, like, 'Oh no, no, no. We're all gonna get in this room and we're gonna play.' And that's how we recorded. It was incredible. I've never recorded that way. And it was maybe one of the best experiences I had recording. It was so fun. It was a blast. I had to, like, make notes and all this stuff, and we just played through it. It was incredible."

Last spring, John 5 told Sirius XM 's "Trunk Nation With Eddie Trunk" about recording with Rock : " Bob would come in and [say], 'Okay, let's try this here, and that here and this here. It was one of the most incredible experiences ever… I'm thinking, 'We've got so much great technology today'… but we got in that room and it was like being in a garage working on a song when you were in high school… It was incredible, and we documented a lot of it too."

Regarding the musical direction of the tracks he and the rest of MÖTLEY CRÜE have recorded so far, John 5 said: "The songs are fucking heavy. I sound like a little excited kid right now, but they're heavy and they're mean. I can't wait for them to come out. I'm just so excited."

When host Eddie Trunk asked John 5 whether the new MÖTLEY CRÜE music can be compared to the band's breakthrough second album, 1983's "Shout At The Devil" , the guitarist said that some of the new riffs are "heavier than anything" on that LP. "All I can tell you is that it's heavy and it's aggressive, and I think people are going to dig it because, talking as a fan, it's fucking badass," he said.

MÖTLEY CRÜE debuted its cover of "(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)" during a "secret" June 30, 2023 club performance for 450 lucky fans at the Underworld in London, England.

John 5 joined MÖTLEY CRÜE in the fall of 2022 as the replacement for the band's co-founding guitarist Mick Mars . Mick announced his retirement from touring with MÖTLEY CRÜE in October 2022 as a result of worsening health issues.

Mars suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS),a chronic and inflammatory form of arthritis that mainly affects the spine and pelvis. After years of performing through the pain, he informed the other members of MÖTLEY CRÜE in the summer of 2022 that he could no longer tour with them but would still be open to recording new music or performing at residencies that did not require much travel.

When Mars announced his retirement from touring with MÖTLEY CRÜE , he maintained that he would remain a member of the band, with John 5 taking his place on the road. However, in early April 2023 the now-72-year-old musician filed a lawsuit against CRÜE in Los Angeles County's Superior Court claiming that, after his announcement, the rest of CRÜE tried to remove him as a significant stakeholder in the group's corporation and business holdings via a shareholders' meeting.

Mötley Crüe responds after Mick Mars sues band for allegedly kicking him out

motley crue tours over the years

Mötley Crüe's  longtime guitarist Mick Mars is suing the band for allegedly kicking him out as he struggles with ankylosing spondylitis.

"It is beyond sad that, after 41 years together, a band would try to throw out a member who is unable to tour anymore because he has a debilitating disease," Mars' attorney Ed McPherson said in a statement shared with USA TODAY. "Mick has been pushed around for far too long in this band, and we are not going to let that continue."

In a 29-page lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles, Mars' attorneys allege that the band planned to oust him, "to fire him as a director of the corporation, to fire him as an officer of the corporation, and to take away his shares of the corporation."

'The ultimate act of courage': Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars retires amid health issues

In October, Mötley Crüe announced that Mars, 71, was retiring for medical reasons.

The band said in a statement that they "accept Mick's decision to retire from the band due to the challenges with his health" as Mars struggled with ankylosing spondylitis.

Mayo Clinic  describes ankylosing spondylitis as an inflammatory disease that can cause some of the bones in the spine (known as vertebrae) to fuse, making the spine less flexible, resulting in hunched posture and difficulty breathing.

"We have watched Mick manage his ankylosing spondylitis for decades and he has always managed it with utmost courage and grace," the band said. "To say 'enough is enough' is the ultimate act of courage."

The band added that it would "carry out Mick's wish" by moving forward with its 2023 tour, with guitarist John 5 in Mars' place.

Tommy Lee posts nude photo to Instagram: Musician says he was 'on a bender' when he did it

However, in his lawsuit, Mars alleges that he "made it very clear that he was not retiring, and that he would make himself readily available for recording," residencies in Las Vegas or other locations, "and any other band-related activities."

Mars' lawsuit outlines years of legal trouble and drug addiction related to other band members. It also alleges that the guitarist was the only one who played live for all of his final tour dates, while other members used recordings.

Mötley Crüe's rep Sasha Frid called the lawsuit "unfortunate and completely off-base" in a statement Saturday provided to USA TODAY.

The representative included a 2008 agreement signed by all band members that said “in no event shall any resigning shareholder be entitled to receive any monies attributable to live performances (i.e., tours).” The agreement also outlined reduced compensation for things like merchandise sales or use of a band member's likeness if they decided to quit.

Review: Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett rock in D.C. despite rain, lightning and broken ribs

"After the last tour, Mick publicly resigned from Mötley Crüe.  Despite the fact that the band did not owe Mick anything – and with Mick owing the band millions in advances that he did not pay back – the band offered Mick a generous compensation package to honor his career with the band," the statement said. "Manipulated by his manager and lawyer, Mick refused and chose to file this ugly public lawsuit."

The band addressed the claims about using recordings, writing, "Mötley Crüe always performs its songs live but during the last tour Mick struggled to remember chords, played the wrong songs and made constant mistakes which led to his departure from the band."

"The band did everything to protect him, tried to keep these matters private to honor Mick’s legacy and take the high road," they said. "Unfortunately, Mick chose to file this lawsuit to badmouth the band.  The band feels empathy for Mick, wishes him well and hopes that he can get better guidance from his advisors who are driven by greed."

Nikki Sixx dives into dysfunctional childhood in new book: 'I chose (my family) over addiction'

In Mars' lawsuit, he claims Nikki Sixx "continually 'gaslighted' Mars by telling him that he (Mars) had some sort of cognitive dysfunction" and repeatedly told Mars "that fans were complaining about his playing."

Mötley Crüe gathered several statements from crew members who supported their claims that Mars would often play the wrong chords, different arrangements from other songs or play the wrong solos.
