The average annual RNFA salary is  $110,000 or $40.22 per hour , as reported by Payscale in August 2023. Similarly, a report by ZipRecruiter in January 2024 found that RNFAs earn $113,214 per year or $54 per hour in the United States. 

These reports suggest that RNFAs earn far more than the average for all registered nurses, which is $81,220 annually per the BLS .

Some RNFA jobs pay an hourly wage, while others pay an annual salary. Those who work hourly jobs have the opportunity to accrue overtime, which can increase their annual income. Salary workers may be able to negotiate overtime but don't always get it.

Additionally, salary is just one of several factors to consider when deciding on a job. The full compensation package includes non-monetary benefits that may be just as important as the pay itself. The benefits you receive will vary from employer to employer but may include the following:

The total time it takes to become a registered nurse first assistant ranges from six to nine years. This timeline includes your initial education and registered nursing licensure, two years of relevant experience, an RNFA program, and certification. 

The following is a detailed breakdown of what it takes to become an RNFA:

1. Become a Registered Nurse

Becoming an RNFA starts with earning your registered nursing license. You can achieve this milestone by attending an accredited Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. Then, you'll sit the National Council Licensure Examination for RNs (NCLEX -RN) to earn your registered nursing license.

Several RNFA programs require a bachelor's degree in any field, making it easier for ADN-RNs with previous degrees to become eligible. Others may need to take additional coursework to earn a bachelor's or attend an RN to BSN program before applying to an RNFA program.

2. Gain Experience & Perioperative Nursing Certifications

On-the-job training programs will get your foot in the door of  surgical nursing . From there, you'll build the foundation of knowledge necessary to become an RNFA, earning hands-on experience completing pre-, intra-, and post-surgical tasks. 

RNFA programs require at least two years of this vital and relevant nursing experience. It will also qualify you for the  Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR) exam, which is a required credential for most RNFA schools.

3. Attend an RNFA Program

RNFA schooling builds upon the basic fundamentals and focuses on surgical anatomy, procedures, and techniques. These programs vary in length from one to three years, with different course requirements at each institution. To get into most RNFA programs, you'll need at least:

• An active and unencumbered RN license
• Two years of perioperative nursing experience
• The CNOR designation

4. Earn RNFA Certifications

You can work as an RNFA without a certification. However, earning one affirms your education and professional achievements and endorses your dedication to patient safety and care. The National Assistant at Surgery Certification (NASC) is the certifying body for RNFAs and offers two credentials.

Registered Nurse Assistant at Surgery – Certified (RNAS-C)

RNAS-C is a lower-level certification for newer RNFAs. This certification does not require a bachelor's degree but does require at least 120 practice hours, the CNOR designation, and current RN licensure. Learn more about RNAS-C requirements here .

Certified Registered First Nurse Assistant (CRNFA)

CRNFA is an advanced credential for experienced RNFAs. To become a CRNFA, you need a bachelor's degree, current RN licensure, CNOR designation, and at least 2,000 RNFA practice hours. You can find other certification requirements here .

Where Can RNFAs Work?

As a registered nurse first assistant, you can work at any surgical facility. These include hospitals, surgery centers, plastic surgery centers, and more. Dental offices, delivery rooms, and postoperative care units also benefit from an RNFA's skillset.

Notably, academic teaching hospitals do not regularly use RNFAs due to the presence of surgical residents and fellows.

RNFA Career Outlook

From 2022 to 2032, the registered nursing field will grow at a rate of 6%, according to the BLS , which is twice the average for all occupations. This figure includes perioperative nurses like RNFAs, showing a promising outlook for this specialty.

Qatar Airways is adding virtual flight attendants as “digital human cabin crew” to assist customers at airports and onboard planes.

Named Sama 2.0, the female faux staffer was rolled out at this week’s massive ITB Berlin trade show. The airline demonstrated that a customer can speak into one’s phone with Sama answering on a large kiosk-like screen, video shows .

The airline claims that the virtual cabin crew member — also accessible through its metaverse, called the Qverse , and the Qatar app — is the first AI-powered customer assistance of its kind.

Statements from the airline and developer UneeQ claim that the digital helper — whose name means “sky” in Arabic — blends “technology with empathy and personalization” and offers “engaging interactions that mirror human conversation.”

It is designed to learn from customer behavior through “comprehensive visual interactions” to “assist its passengers in designing curated travel experiences.”

Flyers can make the most of Sama by tapping into Qatar’s Qverse. From there, the virtual helper can, for instance, guide passengers through 3D-mapped renderings of airports and answer travel-related questions about baggage, check-in and more in real time as they are typed or spoken into a chat module.

The assistant is currently English-speaking only but is planned to have fluency in other languages, including Arabic, by later this year.

“This is a monumental point in spearheading the successful synergy between technology and human connection – not only for Qatar Airways but also for the industry at large,” company Marketing Vice President Babar Rahman said, adding that the interactions would be “approachable and friendly.”

'Bachelorette' announces first Asian American lead in the franchise's 22-year history

On the 22nd anniversary of the first episode of " The Bachelor," the franchise announced its first Asian American lead.

After Joey Graziadei's final choice was revealed during Monday night's finale, it was revealed that Jenn Tran , a 26-year-old physician assistant student from Miami, Florida, will be the next "Bachelorette" lead.

Wearing a purple dress with a plunging neckline, she walked out onto the stage to greet the audience of Bachelor Nation alumni and fans. Just the previous day, she was in the emergency room in her scrubs, she said.

Being the franchise's first Asian lead feels "honestly incredible," she said. Tran is Vietnamese American and is bilingual.

"I feel so so grateful and so honored to be the first Asian bachelorette in this franchise," Tran said.

"Growing up, I've always wanted to see Asian representation on TV. And I feel like it was really sparse. Any time Asians were in the media, it was to fill a supporting character role, to fulfill some sort of stereotype, and I felt really boxed in by that because I was like, 'I don't see myself on screen. I don't see myself as a main character.'"

She continued, "And now to be here today standing in this position being like, 'I am going to lead my own love story. I am going to be the main character to my story,' I just can't help but think about how many people I'm inspiring and how many lives I'm changing."

In 2017, the franchise made its first major move toward diversity by casting Rachel Lindsay as the first Black "Bachelorette" lead. In 2021, the franchise aired its first season with a Black bachelor, Matt James.

As she heads into filming for her season, Tran said, she's looking for "cheeky banter" and "someone who's going to be able to take it as much as they can dish it."

Tran was in the top six on this most recent season of "The Bachelor" and was eliminated in Episode 7, right before Graziadei's hometown visits.

Viewers learned more about her during her one-on-one date in Episode 3, when she opened up to Graziadei about her tumultuous family life. Her father slept in her family's basement for six years due to constant fighting with her mom, she said.

"I've been in a few bad relationships in the past, and I definitely went through periods where I thought that I was never going to be loved and I'd never find anybody. And that's because of the way I grew up with my family," she told Graziadei.

"It was a really traumatic place to grow up in," she said. "I always felt so unwanted by my dad and just, like, the whole family situation growing up. I never felt truly loved."

She revealed she no longer has a relationship with her dad, and in the March 18 "Women Tell All" episode, she elaborated on how she and her mom are doing.

Their "adult relationship has been a little bit (estranged) just because I think in Asian culture, you live with your parents until you're married and even after you're married, sometimes," Tran said. "She's never really seen me as a full adult. But watching me on TV and watching me fall in love, she's really just seen me grow into my own and it's been monumental for our relationship because I can feel her see my as my own person."

"She is the woman I want to be when I grow up," she said of her mom. "She came here from Vietnam, and she left medical school to give my brother and I a better life. And when my dad left, she took on the role of two parents and never complained once."

According to a press release from ABC, "Tran is a sweet and compassionate woman who has dedicated her life to helping others and is currently studying to become a physician assistant. ... When she’s not studying, Tran loves reading, paddleboarding and traveling whenever she has the chance."

A 2023 report by Nielsen analyzing Asian American representation in media revealed the Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) audience "feels least represented among all ethnic groups in media."

Now, each of your rides costs 38 roubles, instead of 55 . Also, when you get a card, you don’t have any credit on it, so you have to top up your card at the ticket office or a ticket machine.

Moscow metro is large, and it has more than 200 stations. You will never be late if you take Moscow Metro . Plus some stations are breath-taking, and they look like museums, for example Kievskaya , Park Pobedy , Novoslobodskaya . Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

An excellent read! Thanks for much for sharing the Russian metro system with us. We're heading to Moscow in April and exploring the metro stations were on our list and after reading your post, I'm even more excited to go visit them. Thanks again 🙂
