Beatings and Calls for Execution Follow Russian Concert Attack

T he images shared online were gruesome. One man had his ear sliced off and was forced to eat it. A second had electric shocks applied as he lay on the ground. Another was beaten so badly his eye seemed to bulge out when he appeared in court.

The treatment apparently meted out to some of the seven suspects arraigned in connection with Friday’s attack on the Crocus concert hall outside Moscow was praised by right-wing nationalists and pro-Kremlin pundits in Russia, with some calling for more punishment, such was the enormity of their alleged crimes. By late Monday, the death toll rose to 139 in the attack, in which several heavily armed men mowed down crowds of people and set fire to the auditorium.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday acknowledged for the first time that the attack was conducted by Islamist radicals. A branch of Islamic State claimed responsibility on Friday for the assault, which resembled an earlier atrocity in 2002, when Chechen separatists held hundreds hostage at a Moscow theater. Putin, then in the early days of his presidency, launched a stinging reprisal.

This time, the nation stunned and his reputation as someone who can keep Russia safe now damaged, the Putin is repurposing the aftermath as ammunition for his war against Ukraine, two years after launching his invasion.

Speaking before a meeting with senior security officials, Putin again tried to steer the blame for commissioning the killings toward Kyiv. He also accused the U.S. of trying to convince the world that there was no Ukrainian involvement in the attack, Russian state news agency TASS reported.

“Russia knows who the perpetrators are,” he said. “But it is interested in who ordered it,” saying that the suspects had been caught while heading toward Ukraine and questioned who might be waiting for them there.

Social-media channels were awash with calls for Russia to bring back the death penalty and senior government officials joined the chorus. Capital punishment has been under a moratorium in Russia since 1997.

“Should we kill them? We should. And we will,” Russia’s former President Dmitry Medvedev, now a senior security official, said Monday on Telegram.

Four of the alleged gunmen, who authorities said all hailed from the Central Asian republic of Tajikistan, were dragged into the court on Sunday and paraded in front of cameras. Their faces showed signs of having been severely beaten.

“I never expected this from myself, but when I see the way in which they are brought into court…I feel extremely satisfied,” said Margarita Simonyan, head of the Russian state broadcaster RT, writing on her Telegram messenger channel. On Monday, she added: “I look at these faces and now think that the death penalty is too easy. Lifelong hard labor somewhere underground, without the opportunity to ever see the light of God.”

On Monday, three more suspects were arraigned as Russians continued to add tributes to a mountain of flowers that have become a memorial outside the venue where the violence occurred.

Leonid Slutsky, head of Russia’s State Duma Committee on International Affairs, wrote on Telegram that “only the death penalty” would be good enough for the attackers. “An exception to the moratorium on its use can and should be made. Besides, Russia has left the Council of Europe and is no longer bound by international obligations in this area,” he said.

Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters Monday that the Kremlin wasn’t participating in discussions around reinstating the death penalty.

Civil-rights activists and attorneys decried the treatment of the suspects, warning that it was setting a dangerous precedent.

“A new normal is being created,” Dmitry Zakhvatov, a Russian lawyer now based overseas who has represented human-rights cases inside the country, said Monday in comments posted on Telegram. “Now torture is acceptable against any suspect. If earlier torture was carried out secretly, now authorized employees do it publicly, on camera. And the message coming from the pro-government media is that you can torture with electric shock, cut off your ears, no one will judge you for this,” he said.

Many Russians have grown accustomed—even desensitized—to rising levels of state-sanctioned violence since the war in Ukraine began in 2022. Voices opposing the war have largely been silenced, including that of Putin’s best-known critic, Alexei Navalny, who died in an Arctic prison camp last month under circumstances that haven’t been fully explained. Russian soldiers captured by Ukrainian forces have said beatings and worse by Russian military authorities were commonplace on the front lines.

Putin has been swift to dismiss U.S. officials who said they believe Friday’s attack was carried out by an Islamic State affiliate based in Afghanistan. The Kremlin dismissed earlier American warnings that an attack was imminent as “blackmail.”

Putin instead has directed his talk of retribution toward his adversaries in Kyiv, pointing out some of the suspects had been apprehended in Russia’s western region of Bryansk while allegedly attempting to escape to Ukraine.

Russian officials have echoed that narrative as Putin attempts to repair the damage and dispel concern that Russia is now facing a backlash from its growing involvement in the Middle East and Central Asia in recent years.

On Monday, the Ministry of Defense awarded medals to border guards in the Bryansk region who they said assisted in capturing some of the suspects.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova sneered at the fact that the U.S. had been so quick to blame Islamist terrorists while absolving Ukraine of responsibility.

“If only they could sort out the assassination of their own President Kennedy so quickly,” she said, writing on Telegram on Sunday.

Tour Itinerary

With the 1000-year history, Russia has had a rich portfolio of conflicts, battles, wars. On this Soviet tour, we'll talk about various wars that happened in Russia, focusing on WWII.

Mother Russia has undergone a lot in its long life. Since ancient times, Russian rulers have taken nearly all political power into their own hands. By the beginning of the 20th century, the Russian oppositional movement was deadly set for the total destruction of the ever-lasting tsarist regime. All of Russia got involved in the bloody revolution of 1917 in an effort to abolish the current state of the government and gain freedom for the ordinary people.

You will learn about the every-day life of the Soviet people during the bloody Second World War with the Nazis, including the legendary Battle for Moscow, the 900-day siege of Leningrad, the hardships that local citizens went through, the consequences of the war and the scars it left on the Soviet people, as well as why the Cold War happened and what was the fundamental reason.

Our mission on the Soviet Russia tour is to find out

  • - How much this 1917 revolution cost the people;
  • - Whether they actually got the freedom they wanted and was it worth it;
  • - What happened over the next 74 years;
  • - Who were the main political communist leaders of the Soviet Union;
  • - Were Russians happy and satisfied with the Soviet Union?

Our tour itinerary will lie in most Soviet areas of Moscow, which are quite spread throughout the city, as very few of them are left. You can choose how much you are ready to live this Soviet life on a 5, 7 or 10-hour tour. Depending on the duration of the tour, you will see part or all of the places below:

If you want to extend the tour, you are welcome to do so by paying $20/extra hour in cash on the tour.

Time stands still in Red Square. The Red Square is the heart of Moscow (and whole Russia). Saint Basil's Cathedral will make your mouth drop. If it is from May-October, have a cocktail on the outside terrace and simply people watch! The massive square offers so much to enjoy.

Lenin's Mausoleum

The burial place of one of the most influential communist leaders in the world.

Revolution Square Metro Station

Rub the Soviet dog's nose for good luck and admire the 76 bronze sculptures, devoted to the passionate, strong-willed and patriotic Soviet people.

Poklonnaya Hill

The highest point in Moscow, where Napoleon waited for keys of the city.

All-Russian Exhibition Center (VVC)

With its giant arch, amazing fountain, and huge pavilions of different Soviet Republics.

Victory Park Metro Station

The deepest undeground station in Moscow and one of the deepest in the world.

Victory Park

For an open-air museum as big as 135 ha (1 350 000 square meters), Victory park sure doens't lack diversity. The park is dedicated to the Russian victory in WWII, and was laid out in 1995 in commemoration of 50-year anniversary of victory.

Stalin had planned for its construction already in 1941, being sure of victory from the very start of the war.

Greeting Hill

The highest points in Moscow (172 meters), where Napoleon waited for keys of Moscow in vain.

Triumphal Arch

Stunning monument consisting of 12 cast-iron columns, each 12 meters high, and weighing 16 tons. Built to mark Russia's victory over Napoleon in 1812.

Museum of the Great Patriotic War

In the city that is as much about wars as it is about victories, there is one essential stopover - the Museum of the Great Patriotic War (that's what WWII is called in Russia). Must-do for those wishing to understand Russia's past and look at the whole war from the different perspective - Russian.

The museum is not for the faint-hearted. Here you can see films about the partisan experience, the scenes that will haunt you forever (no subtitles, but they are not necessary).

Museum of Contemporary History (from outside only)

We'll have a glance at Russian life of the XX century in the  Museum of Contemporary History , which houses bits of everything from Russian history of XXth century: from English club to a storage of Stalin's presents.

Memorial to the Holocaust,

devastating and breath-taking!

Unleash your inner spy. Highly recommended  Bunker-42 ,  Cold War Museum , explore the place where Khrushchev lived during the Cuban Crisis. Go down 18 floors to a gigantic bunker under Moscow that was designed to withstand a nuclear attack. Watch a short film about the severity of the Cold War. If you lived through the Cold War, you will hardly believe it is possible that you are in Bunker 42!

Wander through  Sparrow Hills  and climb up to the highest observation deck of Moscow with stunning views of all seven Stalin’s skyscrapers, including  Moscow State University . After that, experience the excitement of taking a  river cruise  on the Moscow river and catch the views of the Kremlin and Soviet times.
