Where to start. Yesterday I turned on my push start system on my 2011 Dodge Journey and 10 sec. later the Service keyless entry system message came up along with the annoying dinging noise.

It still lets me drive but the annoying dinging still goes off.

Today, I get in with no message this time but it continues with the annoying dinging noise. I noticed that my interior lamps were all on also. So I turned them completely off with the adjustment knob. When doing this the Drivers side door light shows on the menu. (my door is definitely closed). When everything is like this I only get the annoying dinging every minute or so. Not as bad as the first issue but still annoying.

I replaced the Battery in my key fob which didn't make a difference. Help, dinging is drive me nuts and trying to avoid my dealership since they will charge a diagnostic charge.

First thing to try is disconnecting the DJ battery at the negative jumper

connection for 10 - 15 minutes , reconnect to see if fault cleared.

Dodge Journey key fob not working – causes and how to fix it

The remote keyless system in Dodge Journey allows the driver to conveniently lock and unlock the vehicle with the press of a button. When the key fob stops working, it quickly becomes an inconvenience to manually lock and unlock the vehicle. In some cases it can even leave you stranded if the vehicle can’t detect the key and won’t let you start the engine.

The most common cause of key fob not working in Dodge Journey is dead battery. But the remote key can also stop working due to worn buttons, poor battery contact, water damage, defective key fob, receiver module issues, signal interference, dead 12 volt battery, and unpaired key requiring reprogramming.

1. Dead battery in key fob

Dead battery is the leading cause of key fob not working in Journey. Usually there are signs of weakening battery before it gives up. If the remote was working previously, but the range of the remote was gradually decreasing until it ceased to function, this indicates that the battery was wearing out.

Replace the battery

If the button cell battery in the key fob of Journey is replaced incorrectly or a battery is unsuitable, it can damage the vehicle key. Only replace drained batteries with new batteries in the same voltage, size, and specification. Make sure the battery is facing in the right direction when inserting it.

When purchasing a new battery for the key fob of your Journey, keep in mind that the battery may be sitting on the shelf for a long time. Therefore after replacement it may not work, or may not last that long. Try purchasing the battery from a store where stock moves fast. Starting the engine with dead key fob battery

If your Journey has push button start/stop feature, your vehicle may not start due to weak key fob battery and a ‘key not detected’ alert message may be displayed in the instrument cluster. Don’t worry, you can still start your vehicle, the immobilizer is controlled by a passive transponder. Passive means, among other things, that the transponder in the key does not need its own power source.

Touch the start/stop button with your key fob and then start the engine. If it doesn’t work, then look in the owners manual for exact location of key fob placement, as it may vary depending on model.

Use spare key: You can try starting your Journey with its second key. It will also rule out any other problem with the first key, for example, water damage.

How long does the key fob battery last?

Depending on how often you use the key fob or remote control of your Journey, the battery should last between two and four years. This is assuming the new battery you installed is healthy and its use by date is many years away.

2. Poor battery connection

The battery inside the key fob of Journey has metal retaining clips that hold the battery in position and completes the circuit. What to do in case of water damage?

If your Journey key fob stopping working after exposure to clean tap water or rain, immediately remove the battery and clean the electronic component with paper towel and let it dry fully before putting back the battery. In case of exposure to salt water, or soapy or dirty water, it is recommended to clean the chip with isopropyl alcohol or electronic cleaner. If the key fob still doesn’t work after cleaning and drying, the chip is probably fried and you will have to buy a new key.

4. Dead 12 volt battery

The remote keyless system and the central locking system in Journey require the 12 volt battery to be in healthy state to function properly. If the 12 volt battery is dead or if the electric current has been interrupted due to corrosion on the battery terminals or the ground connection, all on-board electronics will stop working.

In this case, you will have to manually unlock the door of your Journey with physical key. Also, the electrical accessories (e.g. headlights, fan, and infotainment system) will not function or may function poorly, and the engine will not start. Check the 12v battery and its connections.

5. Signal interference

Journey remote control signal can be disrupted by objects, poor weather conditions or transmitters on the same frequency band close to the vehicle. The remote key may work when you’re near the vehicle, but may not work from a distance. In case of severe interference, the remote may not work at all.

Interference signals can be caused not only by neighboring radio masts and towers, but also by unprofessionally installed satellite systems. A large part of the radio interference is caused by defects and aging effects in electrical devices and radio systems, which lead to unwanted emissions, radiation and repercussions on power and communication networks. 6. Reprogramming required

In rare cases, the remote key of Journey may stop working due to pairing issues. The key can be reprogrammed with an OBDII scanner. 7. Defective key fob

Or, if your key fob just stopped working one day out of the blue, in rare cases this could indicate a faulty key fob – assuming you have tried everything to fix the issue e.g. battery replacement, reprogramming and the spare key fob works.

8. Faulty receiver module

Dodge Journey has a remote keyless system receiver that receives radio frequency signals from the key fob. If none of your key fobs work, and and you can’t reprogram the keys, it is possible the receiver module has developed a fault.

You may have to perform further diagnostics to identify the faulty. The keyless entry antenna could be damaged, or the module is just not communicating with other modules on the vehicle. In these cases an OBDII scan tool can be used to verify if the commands are being transmitted and acted on by the security module.

9. Electronic immobilizer fault

The immobilizer is an anti-theft security system that prevents the engine from being started and the vehicle from being moved with an unauthorized vehicle key. A fault in the immobilizer system can prevent your Journey from being started. You may also see a warning light with key symbol or key not detected message in the instrument cluster.

For vehicles with an ignition lock

There is a chip in the vehicle key. The chip automatically deactivates the immobilizer if a valid vehicle key is inserted into the ignition lock. The electronic immobilizer is activated automatically when the vehicle key is removed from the ignition lock.

For vehicles with a starter button

There is a chip in the vehicle key. It is used to automatically deactivate the electronic immobilizer when there is a valid remote control vehicle key in the vehicle interior. The electronic immobilizer is automatically activated as soon as there is no valid vehicle key in the vehicle.

The engine can only be started with a genuine vehicle key that is coded correctly. You can obtain coded vehicle keys from an authorized Dodge dealer.

Reset the system

If the key fob is not working due to a glitch in the keyless entry system, it may be possible to restore the functionality by resetting the keyless entry system in your Journey.

There isn’t any button or option to reset the keyless entry system in Journey, but you can reboot all the on-board computers by disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a few minutes. Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery first, then from the positive terminal. With the battery disconnected, press the horn button a few times and turn on the headlights to drain out all the residual electricity from the system. After about 15 minutes, reconnect the battery in reverse order: positive cable first, then negative cable.

Use OBD2 scanner for diagnosis

"Service Keyless System"

My 2015 Challenger had to go in the body shop for hail damage obtained while traveling. When I went to pick it up they told me they couldn't get the trunk to stay shut. I looked at it and when you close the trunk about a half second later it pops back open. If you hold it shut until you hear it attempt to pop, it will then stay shut. Both of my key fobs work for all functions but the car does not unlock when I put my hand under the door handles and the button on the top of the handles does not lock the doors. The driver information display show Service Keyless System and dings once each time I start the car. The body shop took it to the Dodge house and they said it needed a new trunk latch. Two weeks later they got the latch in and it didn't solve the problem so they said it needed a new trunk button. Another two week wait and that didn't solve the problem either. Has anyone else seen this problem? Shouldn't they be able to hook it up to a computer and see what is causing it to display the "service keyless system" message? I've never been a fan of the Dodge house here so I really have zero faith in their ability at this point. Thanks!

Almost sounds like an issue with the proximity sensors for the keyless system and it thinks there's a fob in the trunk.  

I was thinking along those lines as well, either it thinks the key is in the vehicle or it just can't locate it for sure so it won't let you secure the vehicle unless you use the key.  

Fixed So after losing all faith in the local dealer I pulled back the panel under the quarter-glass on the drivers side, located the keyless antenna, which was unplugged, plugged it back in...problem solved. The Dodge dealer wasted 6 weeks, a trunk latch, a trunk button and a body control module on an issue that was fixed in less than 5 minutes in my garage with no parts. I'll be using the Dodge dealer in the next town over for any future service.

Nice find. So I guess that means that the body shop inadvertently unplugged the antenna while working to remove the hail dents.

Amazing story. I've noted the location of that antenna for future reference in case I run into issues with the keyless system. I work in software development in a management role, and am continually shocked at the utter lack of routine troubleshooting skills and complete disregard for logic that many people seem to have. It astounds me that some folks can even dress themselves in the morning.

Service Keyless System - 2012 Charger R/T

I got in my car yesterday and it wouldn't start. I looked at the dash and there was a message, "Service Keyless System". Sitting in the car, I started it using the remote start, but the car wouldn't engage by pressing the Start/Stop button on the dash and the same message appeared. I turned it off, got out, closed the door, got back in and it started. Has this happened to anyone else?

I know there was an update to the radio that receives signal from the fob at one time. Maybe your car didn't get it? Sent from AutoGuide.com App  

Episode #2: The car has been working fine since I posted the issue until today. The Keyless Entry didn't work and the car won't start. It's not recognizing the key. All the functions on the key fob work except Remote Start. I'm heading back up where it is stranded with the spare key to try it. If that doesn't work, it's flat bed time and a visit to the dealer tomorrow.  

I tried the spare fob and it still wouldn't start so I had it flat bedded home. For ****s and giggles I decided to change the battery in my key fobs. The car now starts and the Keyless Entry works as it should. I would not have thought the battery was bad in the fobs because a) everything on the fob worked except the remote start; b) what are the odds both fobs had dead batteries and c) I never changed the fob battery in my 2007. I guess the Service Keyless System warning means: change the fob battery, dumb ass.

A low key battery will usually cause the cluster to throw up a message that it's low, not a service keyless message. If the condition comes back take the butt end of the key and push the start button with it. The car should start, then it can be taken to the dealer for diagnosis.

Okay, so the same thing just happened again: Key Not Detected. The car wouldn't start using the normal method but I am happy to report pressing the Start/Stop button with the butt of the key fob does indeed work and in fact, started the car. The dash flashed the "Service Keyless System" warning. I'll be taking the car to the dealership tomorrow for diagnostics. I'm hoping it just needs a simple flash.

I am sorry to hear you are still experiencing an issue with the vehicle starting. The dealer can check if any codes are setting. Please let us know the outcome upon the dealer diagnosis.

I had this issue over the weekend. I did a little research and found on a 300 forum about using the butt end of the fob to push the start button. Worked fine. I drove the car from my house to the car wash, and when I went to restart, I used my finger to start and that went well. since the issue only happened once, I haven't stopped at a dealer, however, the issue MIGHT be heat related. I can't say for sure, but after all the reading I did and comparison of issues, that seemed to make the most sense.  

I got a call from the dealer. Chrysler is having them run through a variety of diagnostic testing and so far, it has passed every one. They were able to pull a code regarding the Keyless Entry Antenna, but it was inactive. They are attempting to pull an active code to pinpoint the problem. They want to keep the car another day so they can determine if it is an issue with the antenna, module or wiring and fix accordingly.

So, the dealer called today. The car passed all the diagnostics so nothing was replaced as they were unable to replicate the issue. I'll be picking it up tomorrow and have a feeling I will be brining it back in the near future, hopefully as soon as it starts acting up so they can pull some active codes.

Well, I had another episode yesterday. I got out of my car and tried to lock it via the button on the door handle; nothing. I got in and tried to start it: Key Not Detected followed by Service Keyless System in the EVIC. I was meeting a client for lunch so I locked it with the fob and went inside. Upon departure, I started it remotely but the car wouldn't engage. I pressed the Start/Stop with the butt of the key fob and I was able to drive away. I parked it at my next appointment and was able to lock the car with the door handle. When I left, it unlocked with the door handle and started fine with no issues and was fine the rest of the day. This intermittent thing is going to drive me crazy. I wish it would just crap out so the dealer can fix whatever is wrong with it.

Not sure it will help them, but are you taking pictures/video when it happens? At least you can show them that it is happening and you are not going crazy!

Service Keyless System: Update

Went to dealer today & had my passenger door handle replaced. Now both handles have been replaced & for sure not the fix. Still get the message. So guys if your dealer suggest to replace the door handles & rip your car apart. Tell them they are wasting both your time & that Dodge is 100% wrong in thinking this is the fix. This & the iPod with no voice activation is now getting on my nerves! But all cars have their issues & this is one fine car besides, so I will Hang In!

I just got the "Service Keyless System" today as I was leaving the dealership. My passenger side sensor doesn't work and won't unlock from that side but the driver side still works. I'm not going to take it in until I see a definite fix first.  

Crazy. I haven't had any issues knock on wood. So we will see if it stays that way  

Does your keyless entry work? Mine will only work on the passenger door. Has anyone tried disconnecting the battery? Maybe it would work again for a little bit. Thanks for keeping us informed.  

I didn't try disconnecting the battery but my car was working perfectly fine initially. In the EVIC, I did notice the exclamation point for the last couple of days but only today did the message appear.

Same with me. First my drivers side wouldn't work but passenger side would, then niether side would work. Dealer replaced Drivers side door handle. Now drivers side works but passenger side doesn't. dealer has ordered passenger side handle now. Isn't it great to be a guinea pig?  

At least that fixed the driver door. Look at op, both changed and none working.  

Not only is my keyless system working fine, but I ran my key through the washer and dryer. No problems yet. haha

You're lucky. I must have jinxed myself when I said mine was still working lol. I wonder what the problem is? It's been working fine from the day I got it.  

Just got back from dealer who is going to order new passenger side door handle. It works ok, he reset the message, and I didn't get the alert on the way home. I did get a 2011 Charger Mopar booklet in the waiting room though.

Update today: 4/1/2011 My service adviser called me today regarding the "Service Keyless System" message. Since replacing my two door handles did nothing Dodge is gonna do the following... Dodge is faxing a long list of items for my service tech to try out one @ a time on Monday 4/4/11. I have to call Tuesday to make a appointment to drop car off for whole day & pick up a loaner car. Dodge wants my tech to call them after trying out one item on list @ a time & report if it's a fix? If known of the items on list do the trick they will be sending the big guns to the dealer & see what's up? Barry  

It's strange that none of their test mules or show/display cars have these problems. Hope they find a fix and tell them that you want a new Durango for a loaner lol. Those things are pretty nice.

I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery for about a minute and reconnected. I don't know how long it'll stay working though.  

I tried that already, but it didn't work.  

I already did that too and it didn't work for me either.  

I must be lucky then, I hope it stays working lol.
