Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

Naman Shrestha of Tom Cruise: All New Movies Coming Out in 2023 and 2024

After his breakthrough with leading roles in ‘Risky Business’ and ‘ Top Gun ‘ in the 1980s, Thomas “Tom” Cruise Mapother IV started bagging pivotal roles in several dramas, including ‘ Born on the Fourth of July ,’ for which he even won a Golden Globe Award and got nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor. In the 1990s, he rose to newer heights of stardom by featuring in various commercially successful films, such as ‘ A Few Good Men ,’ ‘ Interview with the Vampire ,’ ‘The Firm,’ and ‘ Jerry Maguire .’

Once he impacted dramas, he started traversing the action and sci-fi genres. By landing some iconic roles in the ‘ Mission: Impossible ‘ film series, ‘ Collateral ,’ ‘ Edge of Tomorrow ,’ and ‘ Top Gun: Maverick ,’ he established himself as an action star, performing most of the risky stunts on his own. The winner of three Golden Globe Awards, four nominations for the Oscars, and an Honorary Palme d’Or, Tom Cruise is known to be one of the world’s highest-paid actors. Given his immense popularity and fandom, most of our readers are looking forward to his future projects. Here is a list of all the upcoming movies and TV shows of Tom Cruise!

1. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two (2024)

Tom Cruise recently jumped off a cliff on a motorbike for ‘ Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One ‘ and he will be in action soon enough in its sequel, ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.’ Helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, the spy action movie is the eighth installment in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ film series with Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt for the eighth time running.

Although the plot details are kept under wraps, the action-adventure film is most likely to resume Ethan’s hunt for The Entity as he meets some new friends and foes along the way. The production for the sequel began in March 2022 but is yet to be finished due to the delay caused by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Having gone through several postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic when it comes to its release date, it is now officially set to be released on June 28, 2024. But it is very much possible that it will get postponed again due to the pause in production.

2. Untitled Tom Cruise/SpaceX Project (TBA)

tom cruise movie apple tv

Tom Cruise is set to take his status as an action star to the next level by traveling out of Earth to film the first ever Hollywood motion picture in outer space. In May 2020, it was reported that Elon Musk’s Space X and Cruise were working on an action-adventure project with NASA. Not only is Cruise expected to be blasted into space alongside filmmaker Doug Liman, with whom he has previously worked in ‘ American Made ‘ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ for the upcoming film, but he will also live up to his reputation by attempting to do a space walk outside of the International Space Station. In this movie, Cruise is set to essay the role of a down-on-his-luck man who is the sole person in the position to save Earth. Apart from starring in the film, he is attached to the project as a writer as well as a producer.

3. Live Die Repeat and Repeat (TBA)

A sequel to the 2014 movie ‘Edge of Tomorrow,’ ‘Live Die Repeat and Repeat’ is an upcoming science fiction film that will reportedly reunite Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman, with the former set to reprise his role as Major William Cage. Moreover, Emily Blunt is also rumored to portray Rita again, alongside Cruise. Ever since the release of the hit original film, talks of a sequel have been flying around. However, in 2019, it was finally set in motion when Matthew Robinson was brought on to write the script.

Fast forward to a couple of years later, in a May 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly , Emily Blunt revealed, “That was an amazing script, but I just don’t know what the future holds for it. I did read a script that was in really great shape, but it’s just a matter of if that can even happen now. I don’t have the straight answer on that one.” With the project still lingering in the development stage, it is hard to expect it to be brought to life in at least a couple of years.

Cruise’s most iconic role is arguably Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in Top Gun , which was the highest grossing film of 1986 and took Cruise's fame to new heights. Aside from his role as Maverick, Tom Cruise also stars as Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series. The first film,  Mission: Impossible , premiered in 1996 and the franchise is still ongoing with the Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Released in 2023, the movie was the first part of a two-act finale which will come to an end with Mission Impossible 8 .

Edge of Tomorrow is the best movie there is about what it’s like to be Tom Cruise

T here are no other movie stars like Tom Cruise . And despite his litany of hits across an over 40-year career, there’s no better movie to explain his stardom than 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow .

Director Doug Liman ’s future-set action movie about humanity’s war with robots casts Cruise daringly against type as Cage, a stiff bureaucrat in a suit, terrified, cruel, cowardly , and almost completely incapable… at least, at first. But when he suddenly gets the power to reset to a certain moment in time when he dies (and with a little training from Emily Blunt’s legendary war hero), he slowly begins to learn how to fight, how to lead, and how to win the war. It’s basically Groundhog Day with robots, guns, and giant swords .

But beyond just being an incredibly kickass action movie — which it is — Edge of Tomorrow is also an incredible deconstruction of Cruise as an actor. For years, Cruise’s on-screen MO has been effortless charm and talent. He was a brilliant lawyer who won an impossible case the instant he decided to try in A Few Good Men , he was a pool shark who could beat the pros in The Color of Money , and he was the best pilot at a school full of the best pilots in Top Gun . But Edge of Tomorrow was the first movie to let us in on a secret Cruise would spend the entire decade after exploring: Appearing effortless takes a tremendous amount of work.

Edge of Tomorrow is like a movie made of behind-the-scenes footage. It’s the cinema of grueling, endless hard work, and the incremental improvements determination can get you. Cage dies over and over and over again. His development as a savior of humanity is, like anyone’s development at anything, decidedly nonlinear. Sometimes he makes genuine progress, getting a few feet further into the battlefield before the robots mow him down. Other times, he tries something new and dies faster than he ever has before. But even in those failures, Cruise’s trademark focus comes through — in his tight-lipped sneers or the way he tenses his jaw and narrows his eyes — and we see the improvement building. And slowly, by the end of the movie, Cage looks as effortless in battle as Tom Cruise felt in the ’80s.

And that effort — the hard work and grueling failure — is the real secret to Cruise’s success . Watch any behind-the-scenes footage of his Mission: Impossible movies and it’s impossible not to see little bits and pieces of Cage in there. In fact, a major part of the promotional campaign for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One was how many attempts it took for Cruise to nail the stunt where he jumps a motorcycle off a cliff and parachutes away .

Hard work is more than just a part of Cruise’s movies now; it’s baked into why he wants you to see them. He’s way beyond effortless cool now, and we have Edge of Tomorrow to thank for that. Now that he’s in the latter half of his career, Cruise is finally ready to let us know that he’s not just the biggest star in Hollywood, but the hardest-working one, too.

Edge of Tomorrow is streaming on Apple TV Plus, or rentable on Amazon , Apple , and Vudu .

Where to Watch Every Mission: Impossible Thing Right Now

Portrait of Eric Vilas-Boas

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch every Mission: Impossible film you can. The latest, Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One , hits digital services on October 10 and DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD physical media on Halloween, after a summer run in theaters earlier this year. The question is how to do that: All the other films are streaming on Paramount+, yes, but did you know you can watch most of them for free, too? Or at least without coughing up for another subscription service? Why pay more to watch Tom Cruise nearly get stabbed in the eye when you can do it for free? We’re happy to point you in the right direction.

Mission: Impossible

The Mission: Impossible movie franchise got its start as a Brian De Palma–directed action vehicle for Tom Cruise — a twisty, suspenseful, and betrayal-laced thriller that burnished his reputation for physicality. Plenty of fans still consider Ethan Hunt’s first outing the best of the films, but somewhat infamously, the cast of the TV show hated its action and how it treated the franchise’s characters: “It was basically an action-adventure movie and not Mission ,” said original cast member Martin Landau. “The ideal mission was getting in and getting out without anyone ever knowing we were there.” With all respect to Landau, its success and unadulterated spy-fi fun serve as arguments against faithfulness.

Mission: Impossible 2

The great John Woo of Hard Boiled and Face/Off fame directed this film, the franchise’s first and biggest misfire. Woo recently told Vulture that in all of his films, for “every actor, I try to find a different angle or some special lighting to make them look great,” and that’s true here, but stylized imagery alone doesn’t make a movie. Mission: Impossible 2 is often a beautiful mess, but the films’ overall quality only went up from here.

Mission: Impossible 3

The third Mission movie has some clunky lines (“He’s a goddamn invisible man — Wells, not Ellison, in case you wanna be cute again”) and an even worse publicity campaign (coinciding with Tom Cruise’s ties to Scientology entering the South Park crosshairs ), but it gave the franchise a major critical hit after its second film outing. In this one, Ethan comes out of active-duty retirement to face off against an arms dealer played by the scene-devouring Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol

This was the one that changed it all — the one where Tom scaled the tallest building in the world on-camera, the one where he brought an uncredited Christopher McQuarrie into the fold, and (perhaps most importantly) the one that added an emphatic dash to its title. Those ingredients and an exploding Kremlin made this the Mission that set the mold for the rest to follow, each of them films that rely on at least one major showstopping stunt, McQuarrie’s direction, and increasingly batshit punctuation.

Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation

Rogue Nation set up what these films sorely lacked up until this point: a recurring villain in the shadowy Syndicate that could serve as a viable foil to Ethan Hunt’s IMF, the SPECTRE to his MI6. It’s also peppered with rhymes and callbacks to the very first Mission film: Its central MacGuffin is a list of Syndicate operatives, instead of a list of IMF agents, and rather than ride on top of a train for the big stunt, Cruise dangled from the side a military transport plane as it took off. Honestly, we’d prefer that to nearly drowning , which he also did for this movie. Worth it.

Mission: Impossible — Fallout

Maybe it’s called Fallout because this one’s lousy with plutonium cores, recaptured nuclear bombs, tense disarming sequences, and explosions. But we know it’s actually called Fallout because this is the one where Tom falls out of a plane . Whatever the reason, Fallout rules. It’s beloved for its bathroom fight starring Henry Cavill’s reloading fists and because of how increasingly improbable it’s become for Cruise — then in his 50s, now in his 60s — to continue “ bleeding for us ,” as critic Bilge Ebiri put it last year. (He broke an ankle filming an “easy” stunt for this one.) But it also trades on the years we’ve spent following not just Cruise but his castmates like Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Michelle Monaghan. In the ’96 film, Hunt’s teammates were unceremoniously killed, and each film has gradually replaced them with loved ones and allies. Fallout forces him to choose between them and nuclear holocaust.

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

We’re not yet entirely sure what the seventh Mission: Impossible movie has in store for us, but so far it looks really good . From the trailers and information that’s trickled out, it seems to call back to earlier entries more than the series ever has, from a long dolly shot of Cruise running his legs off (like he did in Mission 3 ) to another fight scene staged atop a train ( Mission: Impossible ). He fights AI in this one, a fitting nemesis for Hollywood’s most physical actor.

The TV Series

Mission: impossible .

The show that started it all debuted in 1966, when Tom Cruise was a 4-year-old. Landau was right: The films and the TV show (both its ’60s incarnation and its 1988 revival, which isn’t streaming) are different beasts. The show never had the budget or the appetite for the movies’ action set pieces, but instead focused on the spies’ tradecraft and planning as they targeted Cold War–era dictators, mobsters, and Nazi revivalists. Its core cast included Landau, Barbara Bain, Peter Graves, Greg Morris, Peter Lupus, and, for two seasons, Leonard Nimoy, along with several rotating guest stars as agents. The show did, however, introduce the series’ most iconic gag .

Apple TV+ costs $9.99 per month. Here’s every Apple original television show and movie available now on Apple TV+, as well as the latest trailers …

Apple TV+ content is available exclusively through the Apple TV app . You can watch on your Apple TV set-top box, iPhone, or iPad as you might expect.

But you don’t need the latest Apple TV 4K to enjoy Apple TV+. The TV app is also available on other platforms like Amazon Fire TV , Roku , Sony PlayStation , Xbox , and even the web at tv.apple.com .

Apple TV+ offers original comedies, dramas, thrillers, documentaries, and kids shows.

For your $9.99/month subscription, you can watch all of Apple’s originals — as listed below. You can download to watch offline too. Apple is adding new content every single month.

How to watch the free Apple TV+ shows

tom cruise movie apple tv

The TV app is the exclusive destination for Apple TV+, but the TV app is a little confusing because it blends together purchasable TV shows and movies from the iTunes Store, which you can buy or rent, content from other apps like Amazon Prime and Disney+, and Apple TV Channels.

The Watch Now screen does not really distinguish between content that you own and can watch, and just Apple’s general recommendations.

The easiest way to get started with Apple TV+ is to open the Apple TV app on your device , and tap on the Originals tab. (On some platforms, this tab is simply labelled using the ‘tv+’ logo.)

This tab takes you to the Apple TV+ channel page. This shows you all of the Apple TV+ shows and movies available to watch, separated into categories like comedy, drama and family fun.

Be aware, the web experience at tv.apple.com is a bit barebonds compared to the native TV app on devices, and it only shows Apple original content. For the best experience, use the TV app on a device like Apple TV 4K .

What to watch on Apple TV+

Apple TV+ (Apple TV Plus, or as some erroneously call it Apple+ TV) is still in its infancy but has already seen breakout hits including comedy Ted Lasso and workplace sci-fi drama Severance .

Apple aims for premium quality across its drama, comedy, and documentary TV shows and movies so everything should reach a reasonable level of quality and hopefully be worth your time. In terms of personal recommendations, I suggest starting with Ted Lasso , For All Mankind , Severance , Trying , and the movie Finch .

  • Is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 streaming?

Blair Marnell

It’s been five years since the release of Mission: Impossible – Fallout , but the latest film in the series has finally arrived. Tom Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have reunited for the new sequel, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 , and this is a story that has finally given Ethan Hunt (Cruise) a foe that he can’t easily dispatch. The Entity is something that Ethan has never had to contend with before, and it will push him and his team to their limits.

Will Dead Reckoning Part 1 be available to stream at home?

Mission: Impossible regulars Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson are all back as Luther Stickell, Benji Dunn, and Ilsa Faust, respectively. Vanessa Kirby also reprises her role from Fallout as the White Widow, Alanna Mitsopolis. And for the first time since the original Mission: Impossible film in 1996, Henry Czerny has returned as IMF director Eugene Kittridge.

Dead Reckoning Part 1 also introduces Haley Atwell’s character, Grace, an extremely talented thief who gets caught up in Ethan’s war with The Entity. Esai Morales co-stars as Gabriel, a man from Ethan’s past who has thrown his lot in with The Entity, with Guardians of the Galaxy ‘s Pom Klementieff as Gabriel’s operative, Paris.

  • 3 action movies on Paramount+ you need to watch in February
  • 10 best movie trailers of 2023, ranked
  • 3 action movies on Paramount+ you need to watch in November

Now, it’s time to answer your burning questions about whether you can stream Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 .

Is Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 streaming?

No , not yet. Cruise and McQuarrie have been pretty adamant about keeping their movie on the big screen as opposed to streaming. And by all indications, Dead Reckoning Part 1 is going to be one of the biggest hits of the summer. This is the third Mission: Impossible film helmed by McQuarrie and Cruise’s seventh M:I movie since 1996. And yet the franchise is not only white hot, it may set a new record for its own films with this five-day opening.

Dead Reckoning Part 1 appears to be well-positioned for a long run at the box office, likely through the end of August. Paramount won’t be in a rush to stream this one. It’s got hit written all over it.

Yes, of course it will. But a major release like this won’t be rushed onto streaming. Paramount+ will be the eventual streaming home of Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 , but the studio will likely keep the film in theaters for as long as possible. That strategy worked very well for Cruise’s last film, Top Gun: Maverick , and Paramount+ waited several months after its theatrical release to send that flick to streaming.

Paramount may also give Dead Reckoning Part 1 a larger window before streaming in order to maximize interest in the film’s release on Blu-ray and 4K HD as well as digital purchases. This is a franchise, after all, and that’s the smart play to earn as much money as possible.

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Summer 2023 has brought plenty of great action blockbusters with it, whether it's new entries in long-running franchises or completely original movies. If you're looking for action, though, the big screen is not the only place you can find it. Every streaming service has at least some collection of action movies for you to enjoy, and Paramount Plus may have one of the best collections out there.

With a combination of recent action hits and older titles from the Paramount catalog, you can catch as much action as your heart desires. These are five of the best action movies the streamer has to offer. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)

Tom Cruise has been storming the Hollywood blockbuster scene as of late, and his latest hit is Paramount Pictures and director Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. McQuarrie has a fantastic eye for action thrillers, making it easy to get lost in high-stakes fight scenes or massive set pieces, and Netflix has a respectable catalogue of similar films that are every bit as good.

The streamer is still one of the leaders in the crowded TV and movie streaming market, with plenty of action movies to satiate viewers' hunger for thrills. From the British equivalent of the Mission: Impossible franchise in the form of the James Bond movies to original productions like Extraction, Netflix has a few movies that are more than worth watching after you check out Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One. Skyfall (2012)

Throughout the history of movies, there have been plenty of great thrillers and action movies about spies. In a few cases, though, the spies themselves have become the center of attention. A great movie spy can come in many different forms: Some of them act and behave a great deal like spies actually act, whereas others live in worlds of suave suits and high-speed car chases.

Whichever world they come from, though, these spies have compelled us on screen for decades, and often left us hungry for another adventure featuring them. 7. Eggsy - The Kingsman

7 best Easter movies to watch for the holiday

Celebrate Easter by streaming these movies

Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger in Miss Potter

Easter isn’t just a religious holiday. It’s a time to celebrate the return of bright colors to nature, the spring fever that makes you feel as if anything is possible after a long winter, and, of course, the universal adoration of bunnies and chocolate.

If you have little ones to entertain, you may want to opt for classic ‘70s TV specials like "Here Comes Peter Cottontail," "It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown!" and "The Easter Bunny is Comin’ to Town".

For a more mature crowd, here are seven Easter movies to watch for the holiday.

'The Last Temptation of Christ'

For those who can appreciate a Biblical film that isn’t a faithful retelling, there is Martin Scorsese’s 1988 opus based on the controversial novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. Scorsese received an Oscar nomination (and death threats) for his bold shepherding of the script, which imagines the human fears, doubts, and desires Jesus of Nazareth (Willem Dafoe) confronts as an imperfect man struggling to accept his divine role and fate. The movie is unpredictable, from the R-rated introduction of Mary Magdalene (Barbara Hershey), the sympathetic portrayal of Judas (Harvey Keitel), and the inspired casting of Pontius Pilate (David Bowie) to the jaw-dropping twist offering Jesus the chance to rewrite the ending to the greatest story ever told.

Watch on Peacock

  • Other epic tellings of the Passion streaming now include the 1973 adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" ( Peacock ), also accused of blasphemy, and 1965’s star-packed "The Greatest Story Ever Told" ( Prime Video ).

'Easter Parade'

Fondly remembered as the only pairing of Judy Garland and Fred Astaire, the 1948 gem honors the tradition of fashionable New Yorkers strolling down Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday (in fact, the city still holds an Easter Bonnet Festival ). In this 1912-set Irving Berlin musical, Astaire plays Broadway star Don Hughes, who learns his dance partner, Nadine (Ann Miller), is leaving their act to headline her own show. To make her jealous, he decides to turn humble hoofer Hannah Brown (Garland) into the next talk of the town. His plan works, but things get complicated when Don’s buddy Johnny (Peter Lawford) falls for Hannah, who’s head over heels for Don, who’s still thinking about Nadine.

As stellar as Garland is, it’s the showstoppers from Astaire (“Steppin’ Out With My Baby”) and Miller (“Shakin’ the Blues Away”) that you’ll be rewinding.

"The Ten Commandments" gets the coveted annual airing on ABC, but if you’re going to watch Charlton Heston in a grand saga this weekend, consider the sweeping adaptation of Lew Wallace’s novel that is tied for the most Oscar wins ever (11). In the Best Picture from 1959, proud Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur (Heston) refuses to side with his childhood friend turned Roman tribune Messala (Stephen Boyd), who eventually condemns Judah to row in the galleys and imprisons his mother and sister. After four years and an unlikely adult adoption by the Roman consul who turned him into a triumphant charioteer, Judah returns to Jerusalem to find his loved ones and exact revenge on Messala. Cue the nine-minute chariot race that remains awe-inspiring and heart-pounding 65 years later.

Judah’s journey coincides with the rise of another threat to the Roman Empire: Jesus (Claude Heater, face unseen and voice unheard), who’s preaching that God lives in everyone not just the emperor. Their paths cross multiple times, briefly but poignantly, culminating in Judah witnessing the crucifixion and finally understanding the power and peace of forgiveness.

Sometimes the most controversial thing a woman can do is open a chocolaterie during Lent. In 1959 France, Vianne (a wonderful Juliette Binoche) blows into a conservative countryside town with her young daughter (Victoire Thivisol) in tow and challenges the rigid morality preached by its mayor (Alfred Molina), who predicts she’ll be out of business by Easter. The Oscar-nominated 2000 charmer, directed by Lasse Hallström, costars Lena Olin as an abused wife who finds her joie de vivre in Vianne’s shop, Judi Dench as a cantankerous grandmother who transforms into a bawdy delight over a cup of cocoa and Carrie-Ann Moss as her disapproving daughter, and Johnny Depp as Vianne’s riverboat-dwelling, guitar-picking love interest.

The warmhearted movie’s final sermon — measure your goodness not by that which you exclude from your life, but by what and who you choose to include — still rings true. Make sure you have chocolate in the house; you’re gonna want some.

Watch on Paramount Plus

'Miss Potter'

This empowering 2006 biopic from "Babe" director Chris Noonan isn’t the first film that comes to mind when thinking of Renée Zellweger. But she earned a Golden Globe nomination for portraying beloved English children’s book author and illustrator Beatrix Potter, whose career launched with the 1902 publication of "The Tale of Peter Rabbit." Beatrix is another single woman defying the conventions of her time, choosing not to marry for security and instead making her own money and decisions. While Easter is never mentioned, Beatrix’s affection for Peter and her other animal “friends” (she talks to them on the page) captures the spirit of the season, as do her efforts to preserve the picturesque Lake District — her source of inspiration, then rejuvenation following a heartbreak that you shouldn’t spoil by Googling.

Ewan McGregor reteams with Zellweger, his costar in the underrated 2003 rom-com ‘Down With Love,’ for a more tender love story, playing Beatrix’s unmarried publisher Norman Warne. Zellweger and Emily Watson as Norman’s single sister make another formidable pair.

  • Also worth noting: The 2018 film "Peter Rabbit" ( Prime Video ) and its 2021 sequel, "Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway" ( Hulu ), are also streaming.

'Steel Magnolias'

We could think of worse Easter traditions than watching this 1989 tearjerker, which, let’s not forget, ends at an Easter egg hunt that reminds us that life — and friendly bickering — goes on. Julia Roberts nabbed her first Oscar nomination playing Shelby, a diabetic Louisiana bride-to-be, who’s willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to have a child. Playwright Robert Harling’s script gifts Sally Field (as Shelby’s mother, M'Lynn) one of the most unforgettable, moving meltdowns in cinema history conveying the pain, confusion, and anger of grief.

Just as memorable is the unexpected tension-cutter delivered by co-stars Olympia Dukakis and Shirley MacLaine, and the essential truth uttered by Dolly Parton, the ultimate steel magnolia: “Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion.” As an adult who’ll inevitably experience loss, laughter is the only way through.

Watch on Pluto TV

'Hank and Mike'

If your taste runs truly irreverent — e.g. you’re a fan of Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s pre-"South Park" films — you might be the audience for this 2008 low-budget, R-rated downsizing comedy starring and written by Thomas Michael and Paolo Mancini. When a bottom-line consultant (Chris Klein) suggests the company responsible for the holiday lay off some of its Easter bunnies (they get paid year-round for working one day, after all), partners/roommates Hank and Mike (Michael and Mancini, in rabbit costumes they never remove) get the ol’ heave-ho. Hank is a crude, cigarette-smoking, horndog slacker, while Mike is a shy, sensitive, high-performing nice guy. Still, neither of them fares well in the string of temp jobs that follow.

The lives of humanoid Easter bunnies are fairly untapped in pop culture, so Michael and Mancini make some clever rules up as they go. Most jokes still land (especially in today’s job market). Just be prepared for their situation to turn very bleak before they try to win back their route, save Easter, and give us a happy ending.

Cast : Maya Rudolph, Michaela Jaé Rodriguez, Nat Faxon, Joel Kim Booster

In our currently divided world, the thought of managing to create a billionaire character who holds all the relatability and charm of our next-door neighbors seems impossible... until you cast Maya Rudolph, that is . Loot 's success in its first season was down to its impeccable ensemble cast, which includes the likes of Nat Faxon , Joel Kim Booster , and Ron Funches , and its witty yet emotionally resonant story, with critics gushing over almost every episode. Understandably, the hype for its second outing has been huge, with the release of an eye-catching trailer going someway to achieving that. Season 2 promises a set of fresh challenges for Molly, with the running of the Wells Foundation now having to be balanced with a new romance for the philanthropist. After promising to give away her entire fortune , will she be able to live up to the now very public expectations?

However, the closer Sugar gets to the case, the more sinister the inner workings seem. What begins as a routine job soon spirals into the uncovering of a respected family's dark secrets. With such a talented cast on display, Sugar certainly looks like one you won't want to miss, with the first three episodes in the eight-episode season all releasing on the same day.

Girls State

Available : April 5, 2024 | Directed By : Jesse Moss, Amanda McBaine

Produced and directed by the multi-award-winning Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine , Girls State is an eye-opening, refreshing documentary whose debut at Sundance 2024 left critics with nothing but positive praise to give. Collider's own Taylor Gates , as well as giving it a 9/10 rating, described the doc as "a microcosm of the country at large, reflecting real life in the way that charisma and the ability to fire up the masses can make all the difference when it comes to politics, but it also gives us a sense of what the future can look like". By capturing the real reaction of a group of ambitious young women during the state of politics in 2022, including the news-dominating Roe vs Wade case, Girls State offers a fresh perspective on the devastating, hope-shattering state of affairs we currently live in, as 500 teenagers from Missouri attempt to fashion their own government from scratch.

Available : April 12, 2024 | Written By : Kirk Ellis, Howard Korder

Cast : Michael Douglas, Noah Jupe, Thibault de Montalembert, Daniel Mays

Michael Douglas ' career has seen him star and produce in some of the world's biggest movies, from Basic Instinct to Fatal Attraction and Wall Street , with the latter earning him the Best Actor award at the Academy Awards. Now, at 79 years of age, Douglas is back on the small screen, bringing us an adaptation of the book, "A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America". Douglas himself plays the role of Benjamin Franklin , with the series documenting his secret mission to France in 1776 as he attempts to improve America's reputation in the global political game. Also starring the likes of Noah Jupe , Thibault de Montalembert , and Daniel Mays , Franklin looks like the perfect big-budget treat for fans of period dramas, with the inclusion of Emmy-winning writers and executive producers Kirk Ellis and Howard Korder promising an unmissable viewing experience.

'The Big Door Prize' Season 2

Available : April 24, 2024 | Created By : David West Read

Cast : Chris O'Dowd, Gabrielle Dennis, Djouliet Amara, Crystal Fox

A refreshing comedy that took Apple TV by storm when it debuted back in March 2023, The Big Door Prize shot to Rotten Tomatoes Certified Fresh status, with many citing its ambitious and unique premise for its success. Starring Emmy winner Chris O'Dowd , the show is an adaptation of the M.O. Walsh novel of the same name, and sees the Bridesmaids star as Dusty, a resident of Deerfield among a community being readied by the Morpho machine, in Season 2, for the "next stage". The second season will also star the likes of Gabrielle Dennis , Crystal Fox , Sammy Fourlas , and Ally Maki . Brimming with possibilities, the second season will look to further emphasize the sci-fi wonder of its first outing, with showrunner David Ellison likely to push boundaries as the town and the people in it are faced with even more existential crises about themselves and their purpose. Check out Collider's chat with star Chris O'Dowd to find out more.

Screen Rant

36-year-old tom cruise movie with 9% on rotten tomatoes has the perfect remake cast after $216m hit.

One critically-panned box office hit from Tom Cruise is ripe for a remake, and the perfect cast can be found in the leads of 2023's rom-com success.

  • Casting the leads from 2024's successful rom-com, Anyone but You, could elevate a remake of Tom Cruise's 1988 Cocktail movie.
  • The success of 2024's Road House remake suggests modern remakes of divisive '80s classics can work today.
  • Glen Powell's Top Gun role proves he could successfully replace Tom Cruise in a potential Cocktail remake.

With Road House (2024) paving the way for more modern remakes of cult classic ‘80s thrillers, the potential for Tom Cruise’s 1988 movie Cocktail to be remade could work better by casting the leads from 2023’s big rom-com success. The 1980s was an incredible decade for entries in the so-bad-they’re-good action/thriller subgenre , with movies like Patrick Swayze’s Road House failing to impress critics but remaining beloved for their lack of self-seriousness and entertainment value. The cast of 2024’s Road House remake maintains this sentiment in the remake of the 1989 film, with its divisive success making additional remakes of movies of this vein more likely.

While not as fondly remembered as Road House , another ‘80s hit that falls into this category is Tom Cruise’s 1988 movie Cocktail . The movie follows Cruise’s Brian Flanagan, a business student working as a successful bartender, whose relationships with his coworker Doug (Bryan Brown) and romantic interest Jordan (Elisabeth Shue) lead to a series of unexpected twists and turns. Though the film holds a meager 9% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it was a smash box office smash, earning $171.5 million against an estimated budget of $20 million (via Box Office Mojo ). Following Road House ’s success, it could finally be time to give Cruse's Cocktail the modern remake treatment .

Road House Proves Jake Gyllenhaal Is Perfect For Upcoming Reboot Of 30-Year-Old Jean-Claude Van Damme Action Movie

Glen powell & sydney sweeney would be perfect for a cocktail remake after anyone but you, the two actors could fill the shoes of tom cruise and elisabeth shue.

One crucial factor contributing to the success of Doug Liman’s 2024 Road House remake was its compelling lead cast, with action star Jake Gyllenhaal taking over Patrick Swayze’s character from the original while UFC champion Conor McGregor assumed the cartoonish villain role . Similar to Road House ’s remake requiring an actor with Swayze’s star power and charisma, a Cocktail remake would need an actor with comparable allure to ‘80s-era Tom Cruise for Brian Flanagan . Likewise, with Elisabeth Shue having been one of the biggest female stars of the ‘80s, a Cocktail remake would need an actress of similar popularity and appeal to step into the role of Jordan Mooney.

Anyone but You (2024) and Cocktail (1988) are available to rent or purchase from digital retailers like Amazon Prime Video and YouTube.

If Cocktail does get a remake, these casting requirements can easily be found in the leads of the 2023 hit movie Anyone but You . Though also divisive among critics, Anyone but You was a certified box office smash as it went on to earn over $216 million against a $25 million budget. In addition to a witty script and fun premise, much of Anyone but You ’s success can be attributed to the casting and chemistry of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as the two romantic leads. In 2024, Powell and Sweeney aren’t too off from the cards that Cruise and Shue brought to the table back in 1988 for Cocktail .

Much of Anyone but You ’s success can be attributed to the casting and chemistry of Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as the two romantic leads.

Powell already had rom-com experience with films like Set It Up ahead of Anyone but You , but made a bigger name for his action roles in movies such as Top Gun: Maverick , Devotion , Hit Man , and, now, the upcoming Twisters sequel movie . Meanwhile, Sweeney has proven widely popular with audiences after her roles in Euphoria , The White Lotus , and Immaculate , and both actors prove increasingly bankable with each new release. With the original Cocktail movie’s negative critical and audience response making it ripe for improvement , Powell and Sweeney could provide the star power a remake would need to successfully adapt the same-named 1984 novel.

Sydney Sweeney's New Record-Breaking Movie Confirms Her Box Office Dominance (Just Ignore THAT Movie)

Remaking cocktail sounds better than anyone but you 2 for powell & sweeney, anyone but you doesn't need a direct sequel.

Following the success Anyone but You , Sweeney and Powell announced they were reading scripts and searching for their next collaboration together. While some have thrown around the idea of returning to Bea and Ben’s story with a potential Anyone but You 2 movie , the original movie being based on Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing makes a sequel unnecessary. Rather, it seems more likely that Powell and Sweeney’s “sequel” will be a completely different film that pairs them as romantic leads.

It seems more likely that Powell and Sweeney’s “sequel” will be a completely different film that pairs them as romantic leads.

This was a common tactic for 1990s romantic comedies, which would see romantic leads like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts and Richard Gere reunite in another rom-com instead of making a direct sequel to their past success. Consequently, with Sweeney and Powell searching for their next film collaboration, a remake of Cocktail could provide a fitting follow-up to Anyone but You . With Powell playing Brian and Sweeney playing Jordan, the duo would just need to find a new Doug to enhance their existing chemistry, potentially creating the perfect recipe to improve upon Cruise’s original movie.

Road House 2024's Success Proves Remakes Of Divisive '80s Thrillers Can Work Today

The bar is set lower, but it needs to maintain '80s movie's tone.

Remakes of 1980s hits don’t always work out, with some proving to be unnecessary if the original was already a hit and a product of its time. However, there are some notable exceptions, with Amazon’s 2024 Road House movie being one of them. The Road House remake’s Rotten Tomatoes score is already better than the 1989 original (59% compared to 43%), and smashed records for Prime Video’s movie premiere viewership numbers to prove its popularity among audiences. Though many fans of the original may reasonably remain more loyal to Swayze’s 1989 iteration, it’s difficult to deny the entertainment value and success of the remake.

Considering Cocktail has a much less beloved reputation than 1989’s Road House , remaking the Tom Cruise film isn’t apt to come with as much apprehension or high expectations. With an already divisive original movie, there isn’t as big of a risk of “ ruining ” the original, as the bar is relatively lower when aiming to improve upon certain aspects of the first film that didn’t initially land with critics and audiences. Of course, with cult classics, it helps if the remake maintains the tone of the original, such as 2024’s Road House protecting the campiness and lack of self-seriousness of the 1989 film.

Top Gun: Maverick Highlights How Glen Powell Could Replace Tom Cruise's Brian In Cocktail

Powell and cruise's characters share similar qualities in top gun.

A potential Cocktail remake wouldn’t be the first time that Glen Powell has stepped into an ‘80s-based Tom Cruise property. Powell starred in Cruise’s 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick as Hangman , who served a role similar to Val Kilmer’s Iceman from the 1986 original movie. Consequently, it’s already clear that Powell has qualities similar to Cruise in that era, which would make him taking over a character that Cruise originated easier to grasp.

The greatest way to make [a Cocktail remake] more enticing would be to get Tom Cruise to return as well.

Similar to Hangman or Maverick, a character like Brian Flanagan has an air of cockiness and confidence that contrasts with his need to prove himself. Powell’s past movies have demonstrated that he could take on this type of character successfully, having to balance the cockiness and heroism of his Top Gun character with the earnestness and rom-com lead chops of his Anyone but You role. While Powell and Sweeney potentially starring in a Cocktail remake would already give it a leg up, the greatest way to make it more enticing would be to get Tom Cruise to return as well.
