In addition, there are various sports tournaments, or you can show off your culinary expertise during a MasterChef competition.

MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas cruises departing from Miami and New York City feature an overnight visit to Ocean Cay, the line's private island and marine reserve. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Solo Cruises: The Ultimate Guide to Cruising Solo

Last updated: April 26th, 2023

Woman on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

A solo cruise is an excellent vacation choice if you’re looking to experience exciting destinations around the world and make new friends along the way.

Sometimes you don’t want to wait to see a destination until you have a travel partner who can go with you. Maybe you just like the introspective time that a solo vacation can provide.

Traveling alone doesn’t mean you have to rough it, backpack, or do all the planning yourself.

If you’re considering taking a cruise vacation by yourself, here are some solo cruise tips to help make your journey an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Cruise Line That’s Solo-Friendly

Woman aboard Celebrity Cruises

Iconic Suite on Celebrity Edge

Not all cruise lines are the same. If you’re planning your much-deserved vacation and you want to travel solo, pick a line that welcomes single travelers.

Interior of a Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda on Celebrity Beyond

Single Stateroom with Infinite Veranda on Celebrity Beyond

Celebrity Cruises has beautiful single staterooms, many with a private veranda, and offers hosted social events for solo travelers.

You’ll find a vast range of excursions on offer, many of which are the perfect bonding opportunity for anybody looking to make new friends, and a safe, inclusive environment on board.

Bartender putting on a show at the Martini Bar

Martini Bar

The spas and fitness facilities on board are second to none. There’s dazzling entertainment on every ship, whether you want to take a front row seat at the Martini Bar and watch the mixologists at work, or take in one of our state-of-the-art shows.

Celebrity is also one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cruise lines in the business, too.

All this adds up to Celebrity Cruises being the perfect choice for solo travelers, something that has been recognized by the travel industry. Celebrity was the proud winner of the 2022 Solo Traveler Magellan Award, presented by leading travel industry publication Travel Weekly.

Single Staterooms on Celebrity Silhouette and all Edge-series Ships

Celebrity Apex cruise ship

Celebrity Apex

With every new ship, Celebrity has added more staterooms to its fleet that are solo-traveler friendly – and many of them have a private veranda, too. Don’t miss out on a trip of a lifetime because you don’t have a travel partner who can go with you.

Celebrity Beyond has 32 solo staterooms with an Infinite Veranda, as does the new Celebrity Ascent. Celebrity Apex features 24, while Celebrity Edge is home to 16 solo staterooms. Celebrity Silhouette will also have 4 inside single staterooms perfect for solo guests.

These single staterooms start at 131 square feet, giving you plenty of space to move around. Not only are single staterooms spacious, but they’re also outfitted with the same modern, sleek design and luxurious amenities as all staterooms on Celebrity’s ships.

Interior of Single Stateroom on Celebrity Edge

Single Stateroom on Celebrity Edge

On Edge-series ships, the larger single stateroom with infinite veranda is perfect for solo cruise guests, a generous 184 square feet including the veranda space.

The infinite veranda isn’t like a normal cruise ship balcony. With the push of a button, the doors to your veranda seamlessly open and fold into the sides of the room, bringing the outdoors in, making it perfect for those who love to soak up the sun and the views from their own private space.

What Are The Best Cruises For Solo Travelers?

View of the Sky Lounge

The best cruises for solo travelers depend on the experiences you most want out of a vacation.

Are you a thrill-seeker looking to cross items off your bucket list? Want to see the capital cities of Europe without hotel-hopping and planning all your own accommodations and train travel? Are you more interested in hiking or history?

Celebrity has crafted different itineraries for travelers of all kinds, from introverts who prefer fewer social activities to extroverts who thrive on meeting new people.

Man snorkeling in St Croix

Craving time in the sun against the backdrop of white sand beaches and crystalline waters? Consider a 7- or 10-night Caribbean cruise , where snorkeling and diving shore excursions are bound to introduce you to people with similar interests and a sense of adventure.

If you’re a history buff, tour thousand-year-old churches in Italy or see the ancient ruins of Greece up close.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

Galapagos Islands

Or choose the Galapagos Islands, where you’ll share life-affirming adventures with fellow travelers every day, gathering together in the evenings to swap stories.

There is no shortage of options for cruisers who are traveling solo.

What About Solo Cruises For Seniors?

Old man hiking with backpack on

On a cruise, seniors can enjoy a worry-free vacation featuring world-class accommodations and a travel experience tailored to their interests.

Celebrity’s cruises have onboard activities to suit everyone, from thrilling entertainment and live music to guest speaker series and guided meditations.

On solo cruises for seniors , accessible staterooms and excursions for all types of mobility levels ensure guests see as much of the world as they desire.

Tips For Making New Friends During Your Solo Cruise

People hanging out at Craft Social

Craft Social

Just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone, unless you want to be, of course. Here are a few ways to make friends—and memories—onboard.

Get to Know the Crew During Your Solo Cruise

One of the best things about sailing with Celebrity is the friendly, engaging crew from all around the world. Many guests enjoy talking with them and learning about the area of the globe they’re from.

Bartender crafting drinks

World Class Bar

Finding a bartender you get along with so you can have your own “local” bar on the ship is an easy way to feel comfortable in a lounge while cruising solo.

Get to know your cruise director, who you’ll often see walking around the ship. If they know you’re a solo cruise passenger, they may give you some insider tips on upcoming activities or entertainment you won’t want to miss.

Join New, Dedicated Events for Solo Travelers

View of Eden aboard Celebrity Cruises

Meet fellow solos in a friendly environment at Celebrity Cruises’ new Solo Travelers’ Gathering and Dinner, hosted by the Activity Team.

Check the time in your Celebrity App or Celebrity Today daily program and head for the Sky Lounge (on Millennium and Solstice-series ships) or luscious Eden on Edge-series ships, where you can meet fellow solo travelers. The friendly Activity Team will help break the ice.

People on an excursion in the Galapagos Islands

The Shore Excursions team will be present to facilitate bookings should you meet a potential buddy to join you for excursions.

There will also be a special solos’ table at dinner that night, and an unhosted solos’ table every night thereafter for anybody who is enjoying the company of new friends for dinner. This is the perfect opportunity to get together with other people traveling solo.

Get Out & Mingle

You might be tempted to unwind in your stateroom after busy days ashore. However, spending time in public spaces on the ship is a great way to meet new people.

People hanging out at night on a cruise

Celebrity Edge

Strike up a conversation and make some new friends on the very first night of the cruise. Perch at the bar for drinks if you feel awkward sitting alone at a table. Get chatting on shore excursions, and join group activities on board.

Celebrity’s ships are equipped with high-speed WiFi so it’s easy and convenient to start a WhatsApp group to arrange activities and meet-ups with newfound friends.

People playing casino

Say Yes to Dining With New People

Joining people for dinner is a great way to make friends and have a fun meal at the Main Restaurant or in a specialty restaurant.

People laughing while eating

People will likely be intrigued by you traveling on your own, want to get to know you better, and enhance their own dining experience. Even couples like to socialize and meet new people on vacation. Since you’re all travelers who enjoy seeing the world, it’s easy to swap travel stories.

The solos’ table is also always an option. Sitting here is a great way to meet other adventurous solo travelers and swap stories.

Opt for an Assigned Seating Time for Dinner

As a solo cruise traveler, you may benefit more from doing a traditional assigned seating time instead of dining at different times.

With an assigned seating time, you’ll be sat at the same table each night with other cruise passengers and the same crew waiting on you. It will give you some familiarity as your tablemates, server, and sommelier get to know you and your dining preferences—and sparkling personality!

Woman raising glass for a toast

If you don’t feel totally compatible with the other folks at your table, talk to the maître d’ and ask for a different table.

If you’re seated at a table on your own and feel self-conscious, have a book or journal on hand. A journal is a lovely way to pass the time at dinner, giving you the opportunity to reflect on the day and write about all the amazing things you saw in port or did on the ship.

Book Shore Excursions Through the Cruise Line

People on a train in Alaska

Celebrity’s shore excursions highlight the best parts of a destination and provide unforgettable experiences. Bond with fellow passengers by exploring the port together. You’ll have the chance to run into them again on the ship for more fun and conversation.

When you book a shore excursion, you know you’ll be spending your day surrounded by other travelers on your ship. Most ports have multiple ships calling at them each day, so it’s better to spend the day making new friends with people who will board your ship at the end of the day.

Woman preparing for a zipline

Choose an excursion that features a hands-on activity. This gets people out of their element and provides easy conversation starters.

Chatting with others while hiking through a rainforest or waiting on a zip-lining platform can lead to fun conversations. Choosing a tour like a wine tasting or a cooking class is a great way to break the ice with fellow passengers.

Bus tour in San Francisco, California

San Francisco, California

If you go on a sightseeing shore excursion on a bus, try to sit up near the front so you’re close to the guide. They’ll usually be open to conversations and are a wealth of knowledge on the destination you’re visiting.

You can ask questions and also learn about what it’s like to live there. It’s a way to have some socialization throughout your solo cruise day in port while also learning more about the city or town you’re visiting.

People walking to the boat for an excursion

The best part? All the details are taken care of for you. You’ll be conveniently guided right to your shore excursion transportation from the ship. You’re guaranteed to be back to the ship in time before it leaves for the next port.

Take Classes Onboard

Sommelier discussing wine to guests

Cellar Masters

Join in beverage and culinary programs on board and mingle with like-minded passengers who, like you, appreciate a glass of fine wine or an expertly prepared meal. Onboard classes and seminars give you the chance to see cooking demonstrations, learn about the art of wine tasting, and more. You can even create your own wine blend onboard.

If wine isn’t your thing, you can learn the art of bartending in a Mixology 101 class. Sample a martini flight at the Martini Bar. Into whisky? Try the Macallan Flight Experience, which lets you taste a trio of whiskies. Or join one of the gaming classes in the casino; once you’re confident to try your luck at the tables, it’s easy to strike up a conversation.

Yoga class aboard Celebrity Cruises

If you like to work out, the classes at the Fitness Center are a great way to meet like-minded travelers. Workout classes on cruise ships tend to attract a core of enthusiasts, after the initial well-intentioned rush during the first day of the cruise, and you could find yourself making plans to meet new friends every day for yoga, or F45.

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

single solo cruises

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

single solo cruises

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

single solo cruises

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

single solo cruises

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

The Best Cruise Lines for Solo Travelers

Solo cruising has never been this good. Not only are more cruise lines adding solo cabins, but the single-traveler cabins aboard ships are also getting more spacious and luxurious.

And just because a cruise line doesn’t offer a solo cabin doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to pay more to cruise alone, either. Some cruise lines waive or reduce single supplements that can double a solo traveler’s bill. These deals become especially frequent during the first quarter of the year,  a discount period known as “ wave season .”

River cruise lines are being especially savvy in courting solo travelers by “offering more attractive opportunities for those who like to travel in style by themselves,” says Joshua Harrell, chief marketing officer for the WorldVia Travel Group and the Travel Quest Network.

Whichever cruise line you choose, you’ll want to book early: The travel insurance search engine Squaremouth says its sales show a 64 percent increase in solo cruise travel this year from 2019.

Here's everything you need to know about single bookings aboard some of the best lines for solo cruisers.

All cruises featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian debuted a studio cabin in 2010 and was the first major cruise line to create accommodations for one. These cabins come in at just under 100 square feet—enough space for a full bed. They don’t offer sea views, but the cruise line does include access to a lounge where they can meet other solo travelers over snacks.

Norwegian's solo cabins are now on several ships, including the Norwegian Epi c, Norwegian Breakaway , Pride of America , and Norwegian Prima , which is set to debut this summer.

Holland America

Holland America's solo cabins are larger than Norwegian's, but you'll have to settle for a twin bed. Still, solo cruisers on Holland America’s Koningsdam , Niewuw Statendam , Rotterdam , and Ryndam ships can expect between 127 and 172 square feet of space onboard.

Best of all, each of Holland America’s solo suites comes with an ocean view.

Royal Caribbean Odyssey of the Seas. Pool Deck

The pool deck on board Royal Caribbean's new Odyssey of the Seas ship

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has more single cruise cabins than the average cruise line. Half of the ships in its fleet offer solo cabins, but if you’re looking for a private balcony, you’ll want to book the Anthem of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas , Harmony of the Seas , Spectrum of the Seas or the line's newest ship, Odyssey of the Seas .

In addition to a private balcony that's perfect for sipping morning coffee, each of the single suites on these ships are nearly 200 square feet.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania is taking solo cruising to a whole new level with its newest solo suites. Its latest ship, Vista , debuting in 2023, includes six 270-square-foot solo cabins, each with a balcony and amenities including free laundry, room service, premium lounge access, and a bottle of Champagne. Each cabin features a memory foam bed, a separate seating area, and a private balcony.

The line is planning to add solo cabins to several additional ships this year, giving travelers even more options to sail solo.

Celebrity Cruises

If you're a solo cruiser who's in it for the view and not the private balcony, check out Celebrity Cruises' Infinite Veranda solo cabins. These cabins feature giant windows that create a space similar to a sunroom.

Infinite Veranda cabins are available on Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Apex , and the new Celebrity Beyond . Each ship has a range of single cabins: Celebrity Edge has 16 of them, while Celebrity Beyond has double that, with 32 solo rooms.

Atlas Ocean Voyages

Atlas Ocean Voyages doesn’t just give solo travelers their own suite—it also gives them butler service.

Atlas' first solo suites hit the seas this year onboard its debut ship, World Navigator . Each suite clocks in at just over 180 square feet and comes equipped with a queen-size bed, a 42-inch TV, and a shower complete with L'Occitane bath products. There's even a separate closet just for your shoes.

Cunard Line

If you're looking to make a transatlantic voyage, Cunard offers solo cabins on the Queen Mary 2 , the iconic ship known for its transatlantic crossings between London and New York. Although they only offer a twin-size bed, solo suites onboard the Queen Mary 2 are around 180 square feet and include ocean views. Two other Cunard ships, the Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria , also offer single cabins, but some are interior rooms without ocean views.

This luxury cruise line doesn’t offer solo suites, but it also doesn’t charge solo cruisers double the price to book a cabin of their own.

Silversea, an all-inclusive cruise line known for its small, opulent ships and its discerning butler service, caps its single supplement at 25 percent of the cruise fare on select voyages. Of course, you’ll want to book early: Silversea’s solo cruise rates go up as departure dates get closer.

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways' AmaCello features solo cabins

Ama Waterways

Ama Waterways has four ships with solo cabins: AmaDolce , AmaDante , AmaLyra , and AmaCello , which all sail European itineraries. On other ships, single supplements are 25 percent of the cruise fare for itineraries in Europe and Asia.

Avalon Waterways

Avalon Waterways waives single supplements on its European river cruises and on some itineraries in southeast Asia. About 10 percent of Avalon passengers are solo cruisers, but you’ll want to book early to join them. Only a portion of each ship’s staterooms are reserved for solo cruisers on each itinerary.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

Here are some of the best cruises for solo travelers at any age.

single solo cruises

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

single solo cruises

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases ).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star-worthy accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee ( river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

New cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-Instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness. All cruisers must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates. Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required upon boarding for guests ages 12 and up.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

The eight-day Vienna Vibe cruise from U by Uniworld is a great option (note the cruise line is on hiatus until 2023). This cruise line was originally built to cater to millennials, and this itinerary includes excursions like a walking tour of Vienna and biking around Passau. On board, morning yoga classes and a rooftop ice bar ensure guests will always have something to do. A negative COVID-19 test may be required for unvaccinated passengers when entering foreign countries.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess, Holland America, and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon entry.

A seven-day Norwegian Fjords cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sky Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to explore another part of the world best seen from a ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by. For both Viking Cruises, guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon boarding.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 71-day Grand Africa Voyage from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, stopping in Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Jordan, Tanzania, Madagascar, South Africa, and more on its cruise around the African continent. All guests must be fully vaccinated and test negative for COVID-19 upon arrival.

Cunard's Centenary World Voyages is even longer, at 117 nights aboard the Queen Mary 2 . The cruise includes two transatlantic crossings and stops across Asia, South Africa, and Australia, departing and arriving in New York City. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends. All guests ages 12 and up must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 14 days prior to travel.

Single Travelers Guide to Planning a Solo Cruise.

A solo cruise isn't just a vacation; it's a chance for self-discovery and the creation of unforgettable memories on the open seas.

The idea of going on a cruise alone can be daunting — but solo travel is the way of the future. Luckily, US News & World Report named Virgin Voyages “among the best cruises for solo travelers ” in 2022.

Solo Travel is on the Rise

Solo cruises are the new norm in 2024, as people are increasingly willing to take on adventure themselves if their friends or family can’t be convinced to join. “There is a really wonderful circular relationship between self-esteem and traveling ,” licensed psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael Peet told NBC News. “Traveling in itself is an act of confidence. The fact that you went somewhere by yourself demonstrates strength.”

We’re inclined to agree — although between the bounty of onboard entertainment shows and events we curate and our carefully compiled list of Shore Things for when you dock, you won’t need to demonstrate too much strength on a voyage.

A study by MMGY found that one in four travelers plans to travel solo in the next six months. Will you be among them? Whether it’s with a classic, relaxing 4-night jaunt through the Caribbean or a sprawling 15-night getaway across the Mediterranean, you deserve some “you” time. See you on board for a solo cruise, Sailor!

Plan a Solo Cruise, Reconnect and Meet other Singles

Planning and going on a solo cruise can be a liberating and empowering experience, especially if it is your first cruise and you have no set expectations. Traveling on a cruise ship with like minded people who may also be traveling solo provides plenty of opportunity to meet new people. When traveling solo whether you’re over 30, 40, or 50, it’s your time to explore on your terms. You’ll be able to set your own schedule, or if you happen to meet someone on board you can schedule activities you’re both interested in through our Mobile App. We are an adult only cruise line that caters to solo travelers, with our cruise ships having a sociable atmosphere and plenty of social events. As a solo traveler, you may want relaxation, or adventure, or a bit of both, regardless if you are a solo traveler that likes quiet time, or to be in the mix of social fun you’ll find plenty of activities on board our cruise ships, and on shore excursions. Remember when planning your solo cruise to pack wisely. Consider what to wear on your cruise , although we don’t have a dress policy onboard our cruise ships, nor do we force you into a formal night, you still want to consider our cruise activities and dressing for shore excursions.

A Solo Cruise for Singles, and everyone in between

People of any relationship status can find fun aboard one of our voyages, and our exclusively adult philosophy creates an alluring onboard atmosphere that draws like-minded people to one another.

Our Crew has put a lot of thought into inclusive activities and spaces on board the ship, from a “grog walk” (Virginese for “pub crawl”) through our many bars to the shared table concept at Gunbae, our convivial, first-to-sea Korean BBQ restaurant — where diners mingle while seated around a table, all sharing the same grill.

“I came expecting to relax, eat some great food and have fun. What I didn’t expect was to meet such an amazing group of humans while traveling alone,” posted Braunwyn Windham-Burke of The Real Housewives of Orange County about her experience cruising single on Scarlet Lady. “I’m coming back different than I left, healing through joy, stronger and more aware of myself.”

Booking a Single Cabin for Solo Travelers

Our adult only cruise ships aren’t just retreats for the rich and reality TV-famous, though. The Insider and Sea View cabins are priced attractively for people traveling alone — and subscribers to the Virgin Voyages email list are often notified of promotions on double occupancy rooms with no single supplement, meaning you can spread out without the customary extra charge.

Take advantage of booking a single cabin on board a Virgin Voyage cruise ship, find a solo cruise deal and start saving. Our cruise cabins are super-yacht inspired cabins, built to optimize space and views. Perfect for solo travelers yearning for sophistication, relaxation, with VIP service! Enjoy comfort and privacy to your heart's desire in your own space, but if you ever feel need for a guest, our cabin beds are designed to be converted to give that living room vibe while making for a welcoming space of enjoyment.

Best Cruise Line for Singles and Solo Travelers

Our adults-only cruises make the perfect atmosphere for single cruisers to meet new friends. With plenty of onboard activities and entertainment, you won’t lack for excitement or things to do. From bar crawls to adult games, and cruise karaoke you’ll have plenty of laughs and fun. Tips for Traveling Alone and Why You Should Go on a Solo Cruise

By  Chantae Reden | Published on December 1, 2021

At the age of 19, I purchased a plane ticket to Nicaragua and ventured on my first-ever solo trip to Central America. Ten years and 30 countries later, I still believe that traveling alone is one of the best ways to see the world. When you travel solo, you're likely to make new friends, develop newfound confidence and experience the freedom of waking up in a destination and doing the activities you're passionate about, all on your own timeline.

Tips For Traveling Solo

When friends and family hear that I'm planning a solo trip to a far-flung destination, I'm usually met with one question:

"Is it safe to travel alone?"

Understandably, safety is one of the biggest factors on people's minds when it comes to venturing on a solo vacation. On my first international trip traveling alone, I scheduled a driver to pick me up at the airport and drive me six hours away to my accommodations. However, my plane landed late in the evening and my driver was nowhere to be seen. I'd failed to write down the address of my destination, trusting the driver to have it. Then, because I'd failed to put a travel notice on my credit card, my debit card was declined at the airport's ATM. I only had the exact amount of cash on hand to pay my rogue driver.

With no plan B, I cried and walked from the airport to a nearby hotel in the dark. The hotel receptionist took pity on me and helped me call my bank and my family back home. We also arranged for a new driver to take me to my destination in Popoyo, Nicaragua the next morning.

Once I've arrived somewhere as a solo traveler, I take the same precautions that I take in any major city. I typically stick to main roads, avoid showing off any expensive objects and aim to be back in my hotel just after dinner. If a stranger seems too inquisitive, I'll mention that I'm planning to meet a friend. I also ask locals and hotel staff for safety advice and guidance on what scams I should be looking out for.

Though most destinations are worth visiting as a solo traveler, there are some that are easier to navigate than others. One thing you can count on, however, is that you likely won't be the only one doing it. Solo travelers are one of the fastest-growing travel demographics, with more people traveling alone to new countries each year. In regions like Europe , the South Pacific and Southeast Asia, solo travelers can be found in just about every hostel.

Taiwan Taipei City Skyline at Night

Joining meetup groups, walking tours and day trips and taking cultural dance or cooking classes are all interesting ways to learn about the place you're visiting in a social environment. As a solo traveler in Hawaii , I went on an adventure tour of the North Shore where we could snorkel, hike to waterfalls and kayak. While I was nervous about feeling left out of the group at first, I met a fellow solo traveler on the tour bus who happened to feel the same. We kayaked through a sea turtle sanctuary together, nearly spilling into the water in excitement whenever a sea turtle bobbed its head above the surface. Later, we met up for a sugar-sweet scoop of shave ice and swapped contact information.

It's a common misconception that traveling alone is bound to be a lonely experience. I've found I actually make more friends on the road as a solo traveler. I'm more likely to strike up a conversation with a stranger and join group experiences and I'm often seen as more approachable by other travelers than when I travel with a friend. Because I'm not beholden to anyone else's schedule, I can easily join and leave travel groups as I please. I've made some of my best friends while traveling solo and we now often plan trips together. My spouse and I met because he was traveling alone through California, my home state, and I gave him an impromptu tour of Southern California .

If you're trying to decide where to stay, hostels foster a social environment that's ideal for making travel buddies. If you want to be able to take a break, some hostels have private rooms available, offering solo travelers a nice compromise of privacy and a social life. Standard hotels are ideal for those looking for solitude and a private escape, but it may be a challenge to make friends, especially if the hotel caters to romantic getaways or families with young children. And while relaxing at an overwater bungalow in the Maldives sounds idyllic, I'd probably save that seaside getaway for when I'm traveling with a partner.

Some guided multi-day tours cater to solo travelers, which is a bit of an oxymoron when you consider that you'll have travel partners from sunrise until sunset for the duration of your trip. This is a great option for those who are nervous about traveling on their own but don't want to let their fear get in the way of going on a journey to somewhere new.

Why A Cruise Is An Ideal Solo Vacation

A cruise offers a great balance of relaxation and adventure for solo travelers. It's a trip where you're bound to make interesting friends from all around the world while enjoying the freedom of movement that only solo travel brings. You can enjoy a multi-city trip with the freedom of not having to worry about the logistics of finding accommodation, transportation and delicious meals. Then you can recapture your solitude whenever it suits you and enjoy the destinations , activities and amenities that the cruise offers on your own schedule. Here are some of the best perks of a solo cruise.

Company (Only) When You Want It

Onboard a cruise, there are dozens of activities to keep you busy. Plus, you're bound to meet people as you try your hand at adventure activities like fencing, archery, ziplining, catching a wave on the FlowRider*, racing around on bumper cars, rock climbing and sliding down the best water attractions at sea.

When it's time to slow your heart rate, escape for a spa treatment or perch yourself at one of the many bars onboard and swap travel tales with the bartender. There are also cooking classes, theater performances, dance classes and karaoke nights, where you can get to know your fellow travelers by bonding over mutual affinities for and distastes of the songs being belted on stage.

Options For Outings

Once the ship pulls into port, you can venture on a shore excursion with other guests or strike out on your own. Fellow solo travelers tend to join shore excursion trips, so that's an easy way to make friends with whom you can plan future activities onboard. Blow bubbles and explore dive sites in the aquarium-clear waters of Bonaire with a scuba dive buddy, embrace your curiosity on a cultural tour of Kyoto, learn to surf in Oahu or explore the Greek ruins in Athens. Back on the ship, you'll have plenty of shared memories with your shipmates.

Your Own Team Of Experts

As a solo traveler onboard, it's often easy to get to know the staff. Crew members usually hail from all around the world and often share your love of travel. They're experts at recommending the best things to do no matter your interest and are also savvy when it comes to helping guests choose excursions and making the most of the ship's features. On one cruise, a staff member showed me which lounge chair area was bound to get the most shade throughout the day.

Dining is one of the most common conundrums for solo travelers, especially if you're not keen on ordering room service each evening. Fortunately, the maître d' often has a good eye for matching solo travelers at a dining table together as long as you simply let staff know in advance. If you'd like your solo vacation to double as a complete retreat, bring a book along and enjoy dining in your own company. Don't be afraid to enter the specialty dining restaurants, either.

It's A Good Value

Going solo on a cruise can offer a great deal for travelers. Solo cruise vacations are becoming increasingly popular and select Royal Caribbean ships have studio staterooms . These rooms are designed specifically with solo travelers in mind, and you can say goodbye to single supplement fees. If you'd rather go with another option, there's nothing wrong with paying a bit more and having a larger stateroom to yourself.

Ready To Travel Alone?

If you want to enjoy the freedom of a solo trip without the heavy planning logistics, a cruise is a great way to get your feet wet. You'll have the benefit of planned meals, activities and excursions whenever you want, along with plenty of ways to satisfy your wanderlust. A solo vacation is a great way to come to center; you'll return home feeling rejuvenated and filled with the confidence that all you need is yourself to have a wonderful time.

Solo Cruises: Ultimate Guide to Sailing Alone

Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • September 12, 2020

The appeal of  solo cruises  lies in two camps: cruise heaven or downright terrifying.

I assume you want to know everything about  solo cruises  and cruising single? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

solo cruises travel

Statistics  released over the past few  years by the Cruise Lines International Association show that people traveling alone are an ever-increasing demographic.

Over the past decade, cruise lines have recognized the  solo traveler  market and now feature a variety of staterooms designed for single travelers without the need for a travel companion.

Cruise ships  now offer more  solo cabins  than ever, with NCL retrofitting its vessels to make all classes of  solo cabins  available, including veranda staterooms.

Why Take a Solo Cruise?

Choosing a  solo cruise  offers unmatched opportunities for those seeking freedom and adventure without compromise. It caters to the desires of  solo travelers  to explore at their own pace and meet like-minded individuals along the way.

Freedom and Flexibility

Freedom is the cornerstone of a  solo cruise  experience. The  solo traveler  enjoys complete autonomy in planning his or her day without synchronizing with others’ schedules. From choosing excursions to deciding on meal times, the flexibility available to  solo cruisers  means that one can follow their whims as they arise.

Meeting New People

Embarking on a solo cruise can be an ideal way to socialize and connect with fellow travelers. Solo cruisers are often able to meet new people, and many cruise lines offer activities and events specifically designed for singles. This creates a friendly environment where new friendships can be formed.

Personal Growth and Independence

Cruising solo fosters  personal growth and independence . It encourages solo travelers to leave their comfort zones and engage in new experiences, increasing self-reliance. The voyage becomes not just a journey across the sea, but also an exploration of one’s capabilities and strengths.

Planning a Solo Cruise

When planning a solo cruise, one must consider the variety of cruise lines available, choose the most suitable stateroom, and understand the financial aspects, such as the single supplement fee. Selecting the perfect cruise can be straightforward with the proper research and knowledge.

Length of the Cruise Matters

Retirees with passive income have the resources and time to indulge in extended sailings of 10 days or longer to exotic locales on high-end cruise ships. Do you know who (usually) does not? Single people in their 20s-50s.

Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but it’s a numbers game out here.  If you want to ensure that your sailing will be loaded with lovely lurkers, select a trip of 8 days or less on a non-pretentious cruise line that can be booked for a reasonable price.

READ MORE:  9 Best Cruise Lines For Singles

If you want to avoid being overrun with families as kids take over the lido deck, choose a cruise that sails while kids are still in school. You won’t completely avoid married couples and pint-sized pirates altogether, but the numbers will be way more in your favor.

Another pro tip is to remember that two to four-day sailings will likely be your weekend warriors, often comprised of a heavier drinking and party crowd. Grab a cocktail and claim your place on the dance floor if that’s your thing.

On five to eight-day sailings, your fellow sailors are likely to be of a (slightly) more mature and reserved variety.

Researching Cruise Lines

Research is the first step in planning a  solo cruise . Cruise lines such as Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Holland America offer different experiences, amenities, and  solo traveler  programs. You are not limited to just mass-market sailings, even luxury cruise lines offer  solo rates  (which typically offer fewer people onboard).

Norwegian Cruise Line is renowned for their studio staterooms catering to solo cruisers, which removes the single supplement fee. Royal Caribbean also provides studio staterooms designed for solo travelers, ensuring value and comfort without the additional cost of single supplements.

Selecting the Right Stateroom

Choosing the right stateroom is crucial for a  solo cruiser’s  comfort and enjoyment. The options vary from interior rooms to balconies and suites.

Solo travelers might consider the following factors:

  • Location : Proximity to the ship’s amenities.
  • View : Whether one prefers an ocean view or not.
  • Size : Space and layout that meets personal comfort levels.

Some cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, offer staterooms specifically designed for solo passengers, providing an appropriately sized living space but also helping solo cruisers avoid the single supplement.

Understanding the Single Supplement

First, you should know that cruise line rates are based on double occupancy and cruise ship staterooms are designed for two people. The single supplement is a fee that cruise lines charge when a solo traveler occupies that cabin.

For instance, if you book a balcony stateroom for one person as a solo cruiser, you will be charged the rate for two people (while only paying the port taxes for one person).

Solo cruisers should look for promotions or specific sailings where the single supplement is reduced or waived.

A website that has been around for years, helping the solo cruiser, is  CruisePlum.com .

Holland America occasionally offers a reduced single supplement, making it advantageous for solo cruisers to monitor such deals. Always review the pricing structure of your chosen cruise line to ensure you receive the most cost-effective option for your solo adventure.

Onboard Experience for Solo Travelers

For individuals traveling alone, cruising provides a unique chance to indulge without judgment, connect with like-minded people, and participate in activities not limited by others.

Dining Options and Social Meals

Solo travelers  have various dining options, from high-end specialty restaurants to casual buffets.

Many cruise lines cater to singles by offering  social dining tables  where guests can meet and enjoy meals, facilitating connections and shared experiences. For instance, Silversea Cruises provides an elegant dining experience where solo guests can mingle and partake in gourmet meals in a group setting.

Solo Cabins and Lounges

Solo staterooms , explicitly designed for single travelers, are becoming a staple on many ships. These cabins are often smaller, more affordable, and purposefully located to grant easy access to the ship’s amenities.

For example, the  studio lounges  are exclusive social spaces where solo cruisers can relax, enjoy a drink, and meet other guests without a single supplement fee. Norwegian Bliss has a great solo studio lounge.

Onboard Activities and Entertainment

The variety of  onboard activities  ensures that there’s something for every solo traveler. They can indulge in spa treatments, attend fitness classes, or partake in enrichment lectures. In the evening, the ship comes alive with many  entertainment options , including Broadway-style shows, live music, and themed parties, which are excellent for solo travelers to enjoy and socialize.

Cruises for Solo Travelers

Several cruise lines offer solo cruise rates if you plan to go on a cruise alone. These lines include Virgin Voyages (Scarlet Lady) and Celebrity Cruises (Edge class ships like Celebrity Beyond).

Additionally, some river cruises in the US and Europe offer reduced cruise fares for solo travelers.

(Note: Check each cabin category with the cruise ship you want to sail or turn the hard work over to a travel agent.)

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Studios

Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered in accommodating solo travelers with their innovative  Studios . Specifically designed for those cruising alone, Studios eliminates the need for a single supplement and offers a private space for guests to chill and meet other solo travelers.

Royal Caribbean’s Single Staterooms

Royal Caribbean  caters to individuals exploring the seas independently with a range of  single staterooms  onboard select ships. These accommodations include interior and balcony options, providing a comfortable retreat without worrying about additional fees for traveling alone.

Ships like  Harmony of the Seas  offer cozy hideaways starting at about 96 square feet, while options like studio balcony rooms treat guests to private outdoor spaces.

Cunard and Holland America

The tradition-rich  Cunard  offers solo travelers an elegant experience with several single cabins on its famed ocean liners.  Holland America Line  similarly accommodates solo guests with a mix of stateroom options, providing a peaceful stay amidst a wealth of onboard activities.

Both cruise lines have developed a reputation for a refined cruise experience and feature programs and amenities that make solo travel inviting and enjoyable.

Making the Most of Shore Excursions

Solo travelers can enhance their cruise experience by strategically selecting shore excursions and networking with other solo cruisers. This way, they discover new destinations and connect with like-minded individuals.

Choosing Excursions for Solo Travelers

Solo cruisers should select shore excursions that cater to their interests and allow flexibility. They can benefit from joining small group tours, which typically provide a more personalized experience, making interacting with fellow participants and guides easier.

For instance, a guided historical tour can offer a deep dive into the destination’s culture and history. Solo travelers might also consider activity-based excursions – like snorkeling or a cooking class – as they often encourage camaraderie among participants.

Networking with Fellow Solo Cruisers

Shore excursions are an excellent opportunity for solo cruisers to meet and engage with others. Onboard mixers and group activities are designed to help solo travelers connect before disembarking. Solo cruisers can take advantage of these pre-shore excursion gatherings to find other solo travelers with similar interests.

Engaging with fellow solo cruisers in this way can form groups for shared shore excursions, which enhances the personal experience and offers savings compared to going alone.

Overcoming the Solo Travel Challenges

Embarking on a solo cruise adventure can be as exhilarating as it is daunting, with single supplement fees and the quest for camaraderie being among the primary concerns. This section offers concrete strategies for solo cruisers to tackle these challenges.

Dealing with Single Supplement Fees

Solo travelers often face the challenge of the  single supplement fee , an additional charge levied on individuals occupying a cabin designed for two. To mitigate this cost, travelers can:

  • Seek Out Special Offers:  Some cruise lines provide promotions that reduce or waive the single supplement fee, making cruising more affordable for solo passengers.
  • Choose Cruise Lines That Cater to Solos:  Opt for cruise lines offering  solo cabins  specifically designed for one person and priced accordingly, such as those available on Royal Caribbean ships.

Finding Your Community Onboard

Building a community onboard is crucial for solo cruisers and can greatly enhance the cruise experience.

Here are ways to connect with other solo passengers:

  • Join Organized Activities:  Participate in activities designed to bring passengers together. Meet-and-greets, group excursions, and themed events are ideal for connecting with fellow cruisers.
  • Utilize Social Dining Options:  Request to be seated at communal tables in the main dining room, which is an effective way to meet other single cruisers.

Special Programs for Singles

Cruise lines increasingly cater to single travelers through special programs focusing on social interaction and enjoyment. These offerings provide a welcoming environment for those cruising solo to meet like-minded passengers and participate in curated activities.

Hosted Social Events

Many cruise lines organize  hosted social events  specifically for single travelers. For example, some cruises feature cocktail receptions that allow singles to mingle in a relaxed setting.

They can attend singles mixers or theme nights to break the ice and foster community. Royal Caribbean offers events where solo cruisers can meet with the cruise director and crew members, enhancing their onboard experience.

Singles Cruises and Theme Cruises

Singles cruises  are specially tailored voyages that cater to individuals traveling alone. These cruises often have dedicated  social spaces  where singles can come together and socialize.  Theme cruises  take this concept further by revolving around a specific interest or activity, making it easier for solo travelers to find others with similar interests.

For instance, a cruise line might offer a dance-themed cruise where singles can learn new skills while connecting with fellow dance enthusiasts.

Themed Sailings or Full Ship Charters

Theme cruises are another great option for single cruisers.  I admit that I was already a well-seasoned cruiser before I found out how many theme cruise options were available.

Unlike a partial charter or the “cruise within a cruise” format, a theme cruise is typically a third-party organization chartering the entire ship for a set amount of days and destinations.

The host organization charters the ship, books the entertainment, schedules the activities, and markets the sailing to the appropriate demographic.

Could you imagine being a superfan of country music, classical rock, or electronic dance music and boarding a ship of 3,000 like-minded enthusiasts for a dream vacation?

There are wall-to-wall performances by some of your favorite acts, with the price of each show already built into your cruise fare.

Combine that with some of the most exotic destinations on the planet, and you have a single cruiser’s paradise.   Themes for these getaways can range from music and comedy to cryptocurrency and comic books.

There are countless organizers of these vacations, but check out sixthman.net for a one-stop shop on more than a dozen “ festivals at sea .”

Tips for Solo Cruising

Cruising solo offers an enriching experience for those who seek an independent adventure. Here are some tips to ensure they enjoy their vacation to the fullest:

  • Choosing the Right Cruise Line : Some cruise lines cater specifically to solo travelers, offering single cabins and reduced single supplements. Ensure they pick a cruise that aligns with their preferences.
  • Connecting with Others : Solo cruisers should take advantage of the activities and social events designed for single passengers. This can be a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded travelers.
  • Planning the Budget : Solo cruisers should check if their cruise package includes solo-friendly amenities and services to avoid unexpected expenses. Understanding all costs involved is critical to planning a stress-free trip.
  • Safety First : They should familiarize themselves with the ship’s layout and safety protocols. It’s also advisable to keep a copy of their passport and important documents separate from the originals.
  • Packing Smart : A solo traveler must pack items that cater to their comfort and entertainment. This may include books, a journal, or any tech gadgets that they prefer.
  • Staying Connected : While some prefer to unplug, others may purchase WiFi to keep in touch with loved ones or manage work commitments during their sea days.
  • Be a heavy presence in social media groups:  Nowadays, almost every sailing has a dedicated roll call on the Cruise Critic message boards and Shipmate cruise app, or a Facebook group. These are invaluable ways to connect with fellow cruise guests before you sail.
  • Step out of your comfort zone on day one:  Singles and solo cruisers will typically look to make connections on the first day to set the tone for the rest of the journey. Grab a drink and jump right into the mix so you aren’t trying to wiggle your way into already-established social circles later in the cruise.
  • A little liquid courage is okay , but don’t overdo it or other single cruisers will be bonding over the kick they are all getting out of the overtly inebriated sailor.

By preparing in advance and embracing the freedom of solo travel, cruisers will surely have an unforgettable vacation while cruising single.

As you can see, there is no shortage of options for you as a single or solo cruiser. Young, old, recently divorced, or never married – there are many pathways for you to have an absolute blast on your next cruise.

Sitting around and waiting for the perfect opportunity is rarely productive, and cruising is no different.

They say the best things are on the other side of fear, so step out of your comfort zone, find your way onto one of these magnificent cruise ships, and make some lifelong memories.

Cruises for Singles and Solo Travelers

Vacations To Go hosts more singles and helps more solo cruisers than any other company. Whether you are looking for a fun-loving group of singles to travel with or merely trying to find the lowest possible price for a solo traveler, you've come to the right place.

Every year, we offer a wide selection of fabulous itineraries in different regions of the world, on outstanding cruise ships, and negotiate an extremely low rate for our single and solo travelers. We send trained hosts from our headquarters to organize get-togethers, cocktail parties, dinner seating and more, allowing individuals or friends to travel as part of a large and fun-loving group of singles.

Our hosted singles department is open Mon-Fri 8am to 7pm, Sat-Sun 9am to 6pm, U.S. Central Time. Check out our hosted singles cruises! If you are not looking for a hosted singles cruise but still want the lowest possible rate to cruise as a single, we can help with that, too.

Cruise lines generally charge a "single supplement" to passengers traveling solo. From the cruise line's perspective, what they are selling is cabin space, and if there are two or more people in a cabin, they split the cost of that space. People traveling alone pay for all the space by themselves.

Most cruise lines start with the per-person rate based on double occupancy and add 50-100% to the price for a single. That means that a cabin that sells for $1,000 per person based on double occupancy would be sold to a single for $1,500 to $2,000.

At Vacations To Go, we're sympathetic to our single customers' desires for a great price. We've scoured tens of thousands of departures to identify and secure the lowest single supplements for our customers, including great cabins that can be reserved by our single customers with no supplement at all. Check out our cruises with a low (or no) single supplement!

The Southeastern Caribbean Isles package will take you on a roundtrip from Puerto Rico, stopping in Guadeloupe, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua.

Tauck claims to have specialised in solo travel for over 90 years, and today this translates to special solo savings and no single supplement on European river cruises. Ambassador’s cruises contain an extensive programme of activities for solo passengers, including a ‘Welcome Get Together’ and guided tours together with other solo travellers. Other onboard entertainment ranges from West End-style shows to comedy nights, with plenty of opportunities to meet others. Oceania has made considerable investment in providing options for solo travellers, with its newest ship, Vista, containing six 270-square-foot solo cabins that include balconies, premium lounge access and a welcome bottle of champagne. It has fitted its older ships with 14 ‘Solo Staterooms’, all of which offer magnificent sea views.

Oceania voyages make it easy to meet like-minded travellers with solo meet-and-greet events, large mixed dining tables, mixed shore excursions and single-traveller activities such as art classes. Destinations range from the Mediterranean and Scandinavia to South Africa and the tropics, meaning solo travellers have opportunities to see a large portion of the world alone. Book the 14-day  Miami to Tenerife cruise  to experience Mediterranean charm and Caribbean beauty in late March.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean say that they do not “have specific pricing for single occupancy” cabins, but that they do offer single cabins on some of their ships, including Brilliance of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas. These cruises “can be reserved by someone cruising alone without the usual single supplement fee”, and they cover an extensive range of destinations, from Europe to the Caribbean and Singapore to Australia.

Passengers can reserve inside studio staterooms, virtual balcony staterooms and super studio ocean view stateroom with balconies, giving them between 101 and 199 square feet of space. Everything else will be the same as usual, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits as every other guests without paying a premium. If departing from the UK, the only tours available take you around Europe; the most extensive is the Mediterranean Cities package, covering Seville, Sardinia, Rome , Lisbon and more.

What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. Consider booking a solo trip on one of its European River Cruises, with prices starting at $4,390 per person for eight- to 25-day tours. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises - Discounts Available

  • Over 450 ports
  • Great discounts
  • Spacious accommodations
  • Tours up to 21 days in length

Cost: $6,074+ per person

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers all-inclusive luxury travel around the world, with over 450 ports of call. Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Some of the benefits of choosing a cruise from Regent Seven Seas Cruises include all-inclusive fares, free open bars, and unlimited beverages, along with free access to specialty restaurants. You’ll also receive free unlimited internet and up to a 50 percent discount for a reduced single supplement for select suite categories.

Bottom Line

If you’re single and want to meet new people, a cruise can be a great way to step out of your comfort zone. Many cruises cater to solo travelers and single seniors, providing ample opportunities to participate in mixers, galas, and other activities aboard a ship. Many cruise lines will often offer great discounts for those who book one-passenger trips, so be on the lookout for those deals throughout the year.
