Introduction

Embarking on a desert safari is an exciting and adventurous experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the beauty and vastness of the desert landscape. Whether you are planning a trip to the Sahara in Africa, the Arabian desert, or the dunes of the American Southwest, it’s important to be prepared for the unique challenges that the desert environment presents.

One key aspect to consider when preparing for a desert safari is what to wear. The right clothing not only ensures your comfort, but also protects you from the harsh elements and potential risks associated with desert travel. From headgear and accessories to appropriate footwear, understanding the essentials of desert attire is crucial for a successful and enjoyable safari.

In this article, we will delve into the specific clothing requirements for a desert safari, offering practical tips and insights to help you dress appropriately for your adventure. Whether you are a man or a woman, traveling in the scorching heat of summer or the cooler temperatures of winter, we have you covered.

So, let’s get ready to explore the incredible world of desert safaris and discover the right wardrobe choices to make your experience unforgettable.

Understanding the Desert Environment

Before we dive into the specifics of what to wear on a desert safari, it’s important to have a basic understanding of the desert environment. Deserts are often characterized by extreme temperatures, arid landscapes, and sparse vegetation. They can be found across various regions of the world, each with its own unique characteristics.

The high temperatures in the desert can be overwhelming, especially during the day when the sun is at its peak. The lack of water and shade can exacerbate the heat, making it essential to protect yourself from sunburn and dehydration. On the other hand, desert temperatures can also drop significantly at night, so being prepared for the chilly desert evenings is equally important.

In addition to the extreme temperatures, deserts are known for their sandy and dusty terrain. Sand particles can be abrasive to the skin, while dust can irritate the eyes and respiratory system. Winds in the desert can also kick up sandstorms, further adding to the challenges of the environment. Taking all these factors into account, it becomes clear how crucial it is to choose clothing that offers protection, comfort, and practicality in the desert.

Understanding the desert environment will not only help you select appropriate clothing for your safari but also prepare you mentally for the conditions you may encounter. It’s important to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen, and be mindful of your physical limits during your desert adventure.

Now that we have a better grasp of the unique challenges posed by the desert environment, let’s explore some essential clothing items to make your desert safari a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential Clothing for a Desert Safari

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, the key is to be prepared for the extreme temperatures and dusty conditions. Here are some essential clothing items to consider:

By having these essential clothing items in your desert safari wardrobe, you will be well-prepared to face the unique challenges and enjoy your adventure to the fullest.

Headgear and Accessories

When it comes to desert safaris, choosing the right headgear and accessories is crucial for protecting yourself from the harsh sun, dust, and sand. Here are some essential items to consider:

  • Wide-brimmed Hat: A wide-brimmed hat is a must-have accessory for a desert safari. It provides shade for your face, neck, and ears, shielding you from the intense sun. Look for hats made from lightweight and breathable materials with a wide brim to maximize sun protection.
  • Headscarf: A headscarf is a versatile accessory that serves multiple purposes. It can protect your head and hair from the sun, keep sand and dust out of your face, and provide an extra layer of insulation during cooler desert evenings. Opt for a lightweight, breathable fabric like cotton or linen.
  • Sunglasses: Protect your eyes from the bright desert sun and minimize the effects of glare and dust by wearing sunglasses with UV protection. Look for sunglasses that have a wraparound style to provide better coverage and prevent dust from entering your eyes.
  • Bandana or Buff: A bandana or buff is a handy accessory that can be used in multiple ways. It can be wrapped around your neck or face to provide protection from the sun, dust, and wind. Additionally, it can be moistened to provide a cooling effect on hot desert days.
  • Sunscreen: Sunscreen is an essential item to protect exposed skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Look for a sunscreen with a high SPF rating and apply it generously on all exposed areas of your body, including your face, arms, and legs.
  • Water Bottle: Staying hydrated is crucial in the desert, so carrying a water bottle is essential. Look for bottles with insulation to keep your water cool for longer durations. It is advisable to drink water regularly to prevent dehydration.
  • Camera and Binoculars: Capture the stunning landscapes and wildlife you encounter along your desert safari with a camera. Also, bring a pair of binoculars to enhance your ability to spot distant wildlife and take in the breathtaking views.
  • Insect Repellent: Depending on the location and time of year, insects such as mosquitoes and biting flies may be present in the desert. Carry insect repellent to protect yourself from bites and potential discomfort.
  • First Aid Kit: It’s always wise to have a basic first aid kit on hand in case of minor injuries or ailments. Include items such as adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary prescription medications.
  • Compass or GPS: In the vast and sometimes disorienting desert landscape, having a compass or a GPS device can help you navigate and ensure you stay on track during your safari.

By being equipped with the right headgear and accessories, you’ll not only protect yourself from the elements but also enhance your comfort and overall enjoyment of your desert adventure.

Footwear Options for Desert Safaris

Choosing the right footwear for a desert safari is crucial as it determines your comfort and safety while traversing the sandy and rugged terrains. Here are some footwear options to consider:

  • Sandals: For shorter walks or during the evenings when temperatures are cooler, a comfortable pair of sandals can be a great choice. Opt for sandals with secure straps and sturdy soles to protect your feet and provide grip on uneven surfaces.
  • Hiking Boots: If you plan to engage in longer walks or hikes, sturdy hiking boots offer excellent support and protection for your feet. Look for boots with ankle support, durable traction soles, and water-resistant properties.
  • Closed-Toe Shoes: Closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers or athletic shoes, can also be suitable for a desert safari. Choose lightweight and breathable options made from synthetic materials for better airflow and moisture-wicking abilities.
  • Gaiters: Gaiters are protective coverings worn over your lower legs and footwear. They provide an additional layer of defense against thorny bushes, crawling insects, and sand entering your shoes.
  • Socks: Don’t overlook the importance of wearing the right socks in the desert. Look for moisture-wicking and quick-drying socks to keep your feet dry and comfortable. Avoid cotton socks as they retain moisture and can lead to blisters.
  • Sandals with Straps: If you prefer the comfort of sandals but want additional protection, consider sandals with adjustable straps that secure your feet and prevent sand from entering.
  • Extra Pair of Shoes: It’s always a good idea to bring an extra pair of lightweight, comfortable shoes in case your primary footwear gets wet or damaged.

Whichever footwear option you choose, make sure that it is well-fitted, provides adequate support, and is suitable for the activities you plan to undertake during your desert safari. Additionally, breaking in new shoes before your trip can help prevent discomfort and blisters.

Remember to regularly check your footwear for any sand or pebbles that may have accumulated, as these can cause discomfort and affect your ability to walk comfortably. Taking care of your feet and investing in suitable footwear will ensure that you can fully enjoy every step of your desert adventure.

Appropriate Clothing for Men

When it comes to dressing for a desert safari, men should prioritize comfort, protection, and practicality. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for men:

  • Lightweight Shirts: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight shirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Long sleeves can provide added protection from the sun and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.
  • T-shirts: Pack a few comfortable t-shirts, preferably made from moisture-wicking materials, which can help keep you cool and dry in the desert heat.
  • Light-colored Clothing: Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and helps to keep you cooler. Choose shades like white, beige, or light pastels for your shirts and pants.
  • Long Pants: Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight pants made of breathable materials like cotton or linen. Pants provide protection from the sun, insects, and rough surfaces. Avoid shorts, as they leave your legs exposed to potential hazards.
  • Comfortable Shorts: For more relaxed moments or in the evenings when temperatures are cooler, pack a couple of pairs of comfortable shorts that allow for ease of movement.
  • Belt: A sturdy belt will not only help keep your pants secure but also allow you to comfortably attach small essentials such as a camera pouch or a water bottle holder.
  • Jacket or Sweater: As temperatures can drop significantly during desert evenings, pack a lightweight jacket or sweater for layering to keep you warm and comfortable.
  • Swimwear: If you have the opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, don’t forget to pack swim trunks.
  • Comfortable Undergarments: Choose moisture-wicking and breathable underwear to prevent discomfort and chafing.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a bandana or scarf to protect your head, eyes, and face from the sun, dust, and sand.

Remember to pack enough clothing for the duration of your safari, taking into account the activities you plan to engage in and the length of your trip. Additionally, consider carrying a small laundry kit or some travel-sized detergent to wash and refresh your clothes during longer excursions.

By choosing appropriate clothing that strikes a balance between functionality and comfort, you’ll be ready to enjoy the beauty of the desert while keeping yourself protected and at ease.

Appropriate Clothing for Women

Women embarking on a desert safari should prioritize comfort, protection, and versatility when choosing their clothing. Here are some tips and suggestions for appropriate clothing options for women:

  • Maxi Dresses or Skirts: Opt for lightweight maxi dresses or skirts made of breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These provide excellent coverage while allowing air circulation to keep you cool in the desert heat.
  • Lightweight Shirts and Blouses: Pack loose-fitting, lightweight shirts and blouses that are made from breathable materials. Long sleeves can offer added protection from the sun, insects, and potential abrasions. Consider shirts with built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) for extra sun protection.
  • T-shirts: Pack comfortable t-shirts, preferably made from moisture-wicking materials, which can help keep you cool and dry during your desert adventure.
  • Full-Length Pants or Capris: Choose loose-fitting, full-length pants or capris made from lightweight materials like cotton or linen. These will protect your legs from the sun, insects, and abrasive surfaces.
  • Maxi or Midi Length Skirts: Choose flowing maxi or midi skirts that provide comfort and coverage. These can be paired with a lightweight top or blouse for a stylish desert safari look.
  • Swimwear: If there’s an opportunity to swim in an oasis or water source during your desert safari, be sure to pack your favorite swimsuit.
  • Comfortable Undergarments: Select moisture-wicking and breathable undergarments to ensure maximum comfort and prevent any chafing or discomfort.
  • Accessories: Don’t forget essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a scarf or bandana to protect your head, eyes, and face from the sun, dust, and sand.

Keep in mind that cultural considerations may also influence your clothing choices. It’s always respectful to dress modestly and follow any specific guidelines or customs of the region you are visiting. Be sure to research and understand the local culture before your trip to ensure that your clothing choices align with the local customs.

By choosing appropriate clothing that prioritizes comfort, modesty, and protection, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while feeling confident and at ease.

Dressing for Different Times of the Year

When planning a desert safari, it’s important to consider the time of year and the weather conditions you may encounter. Here are some tips for dressing appropriately for different seasons:

  • Summer: Summers in the desert can be scorching hot, with temperatures often exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). During this time, it’s important to prioritize lightweight and breathable clothing. Opt for loose-fitting, light-colored garments that provide ample coverage and protection from the sun. Choose natural fabrics like cotton or linen, as they allow for better air circulation and help wick away sweat. Don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from the intense sun.
  • Winter: Winter temperatures in the desert can drop significantly, especially during the evenings. Layering your clothing is essential during this time. Start with a base layer of moisture-wicking fabric, followed by a light sweater or jacket. Depending on the temperatures, you may need a heavier jacket or coat. Opt for thermal or woolen socks to keep your feet warm. Remember to carry a hat and gloves to protect your extremities from the cold.
  • Transitional Seasons (Spring and Fall): Transitional seasons can bring more moderate temperatures to the desert. Mornings and evenings may be cooler, while the days can still be warm. Dressing in layers is key during these seasons. Begin with a lightweight base layer, add a long-sleeved shirt or blouse, and finish with a light jacket or sweater. Keep a scarf handy for sudden temperature changes or to protect yourself from sandstorms.

It’s also important to stay updated on weather forecasts before your trip to ensure you are prepared for any sudden changes in temperature or weather conditions. Pack accordingly, considering both the daytime and nighttime temperatures.

Lastly, regardless of the season, don’t forget to wear comfortable and supportive footwear, carry essential accessories like a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses, and always have a sufficient supply of sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

By dressing appropriately for the specific season and weather conditions, you’ll be able to fully enjoy your desert safari while staying comfortable and protected throughout your journey.

Tips for Comfortable and Safe Dressing

When preparing for a desert safari, comfort and safety should be your top priorities. Here are some essential tips to ensure that you dress comfortably and safely for your adventure:

  • Choose Loose-Fitting Clothing: Opt for loose-fitting garments that allow air circulation and freedom of movement. Tight clothing can restrict blood flow and make you feel uncomfortable, especially in the heat of the desert.
  • Prioritize Breathable Fabrics: Select clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. These materials allow air to flow through, helping to regulate your body temperature and prevent excessive sweating.
  • Protect Yourself from the Sun: The desert sun can be intense, so protect yourself by wearing a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses with UV protection, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Covering exposed skin with lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants can provide an additional layer of sun protection.
  • Layer Your Clothing: Desert temperatures can vary significantly between day and night. Layering allows you to adjust your clothing accordingly. Start with a base layer, such as a moisture-wicking shirt, add a lightweight jacket or sweater for insulation when needed, and consider a scarf or shawl to protect against temperature changes and sandstorms.
  • Protect Your Feet: Opt for closed-toe shoes or sturdy sandals to protect your feet from the desert’s rough terrains, thorny plants, and hot sand. Consider wearing socks made from moisture-wicking materials to keep your feet dry and prevent blisters.
  • Carry Essential Accessories: Besides the obvious sun protection items, don’t forget to bring items like insect repellent, a first aid kit, a compass or GPS, and a suitable backpack or daypack to carry your essentials.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration is crucial in the desert. Carry a refillable water bottle and drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Consider bringing electrolyte packets to replenish lost minerals and salts.
  • Be Mindful of Cultural Sensitivities: If you are visiting a desert region with cultural sensitivities, it’s important to dress modestly and respectfully. Research and familiarize yourself with local customs and dress codes to ensure your clothing choices align with the cultural norms.
  • Bring a Change of Clothes: In the desert, dust and sand can quickly accumulate on your clothing. Having a change of clothes allows you to freshen up and feel more comfortable during longer excursions.
  • Follow Safety Guidelines: Always follow the safety guidelines and instructions provided by your tour operator or guide. Be aware of potential dangers and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety throughout your desert safari.

By following these tips, you’ll be able to dress comfortably and safely for your desert adventure, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the magnificent landscapes while enjoying peace of mind.

What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari

Balancing cultural sensitivity with practicality; how to prepare for your first Dubai desert safari

Got your Dubai tour tickets booked? Waiting for your pick-up driver for your first Dubai desert experience then suddenly realised you’ve got absolutely no idea what to wear?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone!

What to wear in Dubai

Dressing for Dubai can be a prickly subject; on the one hand, the headline dress code advice is to always dress with modesty, you’re going to a Muslim country.

Then, on the other hand, your Instagram feed is full of half-dressed models showing off in the sun. Add in conflicting travel forum advice about what is and isn’t appropriate in different situations. It IS confusing!!

We try and tackle as many of these different scenarios as possible in our “ what to wear in Dubai ” guide over here. However, the important thing to note is you are likely going to want a few different outfits when packing for Dubai!

Even on a short stopover, you could change outfits half a dozen times; what may be practical and appropriate for the beach , most certainly isn’t for a museum or a mosque . A Dubai Desert Safari brings a whole new set of wardrobe dilemmas!

As the desert safari is one of the most popular activities to try when you’re visiting Dubai. We’re going to take a deep dive into exactly what you should expect, what you’ll be doing on a desert safari, and therefore, how to dress appropriately.

Take all this advice with a grain of salt and do whatever feels right for YOU and your situation. Just keep modesty and cultural sensitivity in mind, ahead of fashion.

What should I consider when dressing for the desert in Dubai?

Dressing for the weather.

Even a short distance from the skyscrapers the temperature changes. In winter this change can be as much as 10 degrees celsius cooler once you’re away from the city. Whilst you may have been in bathers at the beach during the day, a nighttime desert safari in Dubai you’ll want long jeans and a pullover or cardigan.

It’s very unlikely it will rain or you’ll need a thicker down coat, a light, long sleeve top should be fine.

Conversely, in summer it’s hot. Sometimes there just aren’t enough superlatives to describe hot to the first-timer!

You will want to consider breathable materials that work well with profuse sweating; think cotton, linen, and rayon material. Accept whatever you are wearing will sweat through even if you are not normally a heavy perspirer!

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Your desert safari is likely to include a variety of activities from sedate to adrenaline pumping! Think about scenarios such as:

  • Dune Bashing – the 4×4 that picks you up from the city will no doubt choose the rugged dune entry to the camp in order to impress! Ladies particularly you may want to consider you’re well supported as you will get thrown around in the car (NB not recommend for under 5’s, pregnant ladies or those with back, heart conditions etc)
  • Camel Riding – almost a must for your first desert experience so do thing practically how you will ride. Camel riding is not the most elegant of activities so definitely consider shorts and trousers over skirts, and hold on to any lose items!
  • Sand boarding – the thrill of hitting the dunes comes with a lot of sand! Think practically about proper closed toe footwear and where that sand will end up when you inevitably come crashing down! Trousers are a recommendation over skirts or shorts.
  • Quad Biking/Fat Tire Bikes – these are normally optional extra desert sports. Some camps may have strict rules that only closed toe footwear can be worn. Again, when you’re straddling something a short skirt is impratical. You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.
  • BBQ Dinner & Entertainment – your evening camps will end on a meal most likely taken seated on rugs on the floor. Think practically how you will comfortably sit on the ground, and the evening may be finished with a little light dancing. If you’ve partaken in a desert sport beforehand, you may want a fresh shirt with you and a litte something to freshen up (antipersperient) before you dine.

We cover more on the exact activities you can participate in on a Dubai desert safari here .

Dressing for Cultural Sensitivity

It’s important for tourists to remain culturally sensitive when they’re visiting the UAE, but also dress for the weather. There’s a balance that can be easily struck when preparing for a trip to Dubai between being culturally sensitive and practical – none more so than when you’re on a desert safari.

The Dubai dress code does not require women to be fully covered at all times. Nor is the wearing of shorts forbidden. As a very standard rule of thumb, men and women should be looking to be covering their shoulders and knees, but there’s flexibility in this.

Dubai Desert Safari Dresscode

So summing it all up from this advice, what you actually wear is whatever will make you feel most comfortable. Rather than a packing list, these are our top tips.

  • Wear loose clothing made from natural fibers to best deal with the sand and heat. Think materials such as cotton, linen and rayon, which work well in the heat.
  • Ladies should avoid short skirts as they are not very practical and meals are often eaten on the floor.
  • Culottes and loose cotton trousers or shirts are better than clingy clothing in summer. In winter, jeans or leggings will be fine, but suggested you wear a shirt covering your bottom.
  • Shorts above your knees are OK, but avoid your shorty shorts with your bottom clearly visible, try to keep to at least mid-thigh length.
  • A sleeveless shirt or tank top may be OK in some situations, but overtly tight, clingy clothes that show excessive cleavage and leave nothing to the imagination are definitely NOT OK.
  • Ladies may want a sports bra or something more structured if taking on desert sports and dune bashing.
  • You may want two sets of shoes with you; closed-toe trainers for sandboarding and any desert motorsports, plus a spare pair of flip flops for other activities and around the desert camp.
  • Something to wrap around your head and face to protect you from the sand and dust – especially during quad biking and camel riding.
  • A sweater or a cardigan if visiting in the coolest months of winter.

And what to pack on a Dubai desert safari other than clothing

Your tour will most likely take care of food and water but we recommend you also pack:

  • Sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat if any portion of your trip is during the day.
  • Sanitizer for before eating and after touching camels.
  • Take tissues and wet wipes especially if you’re travelling with children.
  • Anti-persperiant wipes in the peak of summer, or a hanky, sweat towel of some sort.
  • You may find coating everyone’s legs in a talc/beach powder before you go helpful for reducing some (never all!) of the sand.
  • Extra cash if you will be partaking in add on activities not included in your general tour (eg fat bikes, quad biking, dune buggies may be paid extras)
  • A spare battery pack for your phone/camera – you’ll be taking a lot of photos!
  • A sand proof bag to keep all this gear in
  • Leave your accessories and other valuables in the hotel safe – losing a favourite watch or earring in the sand, we promise you, it will be almost impossible to find again.

What to Wear in Desert Safari?

First-time visitors in Dubai find themselves in a fix when deciding what to wear in Desert Safari. In this comprehensive guide, we will answer all your queries about the right attire for desert safari .

Thinking of what to wear in Dubai desert safari? Wear what is comfortable and doesn’t get in the way of this adventurous experience. Desert safari would surely get your adrenaline kicking. However, those who have experienced it cited that they could not enjoy it to its full extent due to a lack of proper clothing. Dressing up for the desert safari is no less than skill. If you want to enjoy the desert safari fully, you want to make sure that you are dressed accordingly.

If you are traveling to Dubai , you would surely want to pack up different outfits as the weather gets pretty unpredictable. What you wear on the beach won’t be suitable for a museum and absolutely not for a mosque. When contemplating what to wear to desert safari Dubai, you should know that since it’s a Muslim country, you have to dress modestly. Women, particularly, have to cover their knees and shoulders.

When it comes to the question of how to dress for Dubai desert safari, there is no one perfect answer. How come? Let’s delve a bit deeper.

The Unpredictable Desert Weather.

To perfectly answer how to dress for Dubai desert safari, your clothes should be not only breathable but also adjustable. How so? Well, they should be suitable for both hot and cold temperatures and dust. Lots of it. The afternoons in the desert are sweltering. They can get blazing hot and sunny. And even though deserts are hot all the time, the early morning, evenings, and late nights get cold.

What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari?

Ideally, you should opt for loose-fitted clothing. Cotton and linen clothing is comfortable, cool, and perfect for an early morning desert safari. A light jacket or a hoodie is ideal for an evening desert safari to continue into the night.

Natural Fiber: It is best to wear clothing made from natural fibers as they are the best for beating the desert heat.

Culturally Sensitive Clothing: When it comes to style, tourists must exhibit a sense of cultural sensitivity when deciding what to wear in desert safari during summer. They must dress modestly while being dressed for the weather. Put cultural sensitivity and modesty before fashion.

Dressing Styles: Since meals are eaten on the floor, it is best to avoid long fitted dresses and short skirts. A better option would be to wear loose cotton trousers or culottes and shirts. This answers what to wear to desert safari Dubai for summers. And when it’s winter, jeans and leggings are acceptable. Keep a light shawl and sweater/jacket with you as well. Ladies should don shirts that are at least mid-thigh length.

Important Note:  When taking the desert sports or dune bashing, women should wear a sports bra or something more structured. Keep something soft to wrap around your face and head to protect from dust and sand while camel riding and quad biking.

Shoes: If you have not been to Dubai, what to wear in Desert Safari is quite the question as one has to bear numerous things in mind. However, it is not only clothes you should think about. The right shoes and accessories are equally important. It would be best to pack two sets of shoes. Closed-toe trainers, sneakers or light boots are best for desert motorsports and sandboarding. They would keep your feet warm at the camp at night.

Keep a spare pair of flip-flops or sandals for other activities around the desert camp.

Accessories: Whether it’s winter or summer, the UAE sun is strong. Invest in a pair of quality sunglasses. If not, keep a hat with you or a light shawl to save your face and eyes from direct sunlight. Another must-have is sunscreen. It is best to protect yourself against sunburns.

However, while selecting sunscreen, make sure it is not too greasy or heavily scented. A lip balm will protect your lips from cracking as the desert is both dry and dusty.

How to Dress for Dubai Desert Safari Activities?

Since Dubai desert safari has a lot of activities, here is a list of what to wear to desert safari Dubai according to different activities:

Camel Riding When it comes to camel riding, know that it is not the most sophisticated of rides. It is even scary for some. So, it’s better to wear loose trousers or culottes over skirts.

Dune Bashing The 4×4 that will pick you up from the city would take you to the camp from the rugged dune entry. Bear in mind that will be a bumpy ride. Expect to be thrown around. You have to ensure that you are wearing the right attire.

Quad Biking Although an optional sports activity, it is best to be prepared in case you decide to go for it. Some camps have restrictions on wearing closed-toe footwear only. It is best to keep a set of sportswear and something to tie back long hair. This goes for both the genders.

Sandboarding Although a given, sandboarding comes with a great amount of sand. Wear closed-toe footwear with trousers. Ditch the shorts or skirts.

BBQ & Entertainment for the Night The evening camps end the day with a meal that is served on rugs placed on the floor. Think of what would be most comfortable for sitting on the ground, and wear that.

That’s it for how to dress for Dubai desert safari. Hope you found this guide helpful!

What to wear to a desert safari: complete dress code

You’ve finally booked that long-awaited trip to the land of the sand and can’t wait to see all the cloud-scraping towers, gold-dipped attractions and record-breaking wonders of Dubai for yourself. However, as most travellers would probably agree, one of the biggest challenges involved in the art of wanderlust starts with an empty suitcase and no idea what to fill it with. Since your impressive Dubai itinerary surely includes an epic adventure in the majestic desert dunes, we’re here to help you out a bit. So grab a pen and your packing list and keep reading to find out how to dress for a desert safari to enjoy your exceptional escapade to the fullest.

Freedom in the desert

Keep things light and bright

An action-packed desert safari is guaranteed to be one of the biggest highlights of your trip. But choosing the perfect dress code for a desert safari in Dubai, can make or break your time in the dunes. Although you’ll most likely be accompanied by other tourists on your sand-filled adventure, it’s still important to take both weather conditions and the local dress code into consideration when choosing your fit for the day.

Our number one recommendation on how to dress for a desert safari, is to opt for lightweight and breathable clothing, since daytime temperatures can definitely have the mercury shooting for the skies. Your best bet is to go for natural materials like cotton and linen and steer clear of synthetics. As most desert activities require strolling the sands in direct sunlight, it’s important to keep yourself covered. If you’re trying to figure out what to wear to a desert safari during the summer, we suggest making sure you pack a long-sleeved shirt and preferably a pair of lightweight long trousers. You can, of course, show up in a pair of shorts, but bear in mind that you’ll be spending quite a bit of your time in an air-conditioned 4x4 and as soon as the sun drops in the desert, so will the temperature. When choosing their preferred pair of bottoms, women should also be cautious of overly revealing clothing, to avoid coming off as offensive in the United Arab Emirates.

As mentioned, depending on the season, the desert can be pretty cold (we’re talking freezing) in the early sunrise hours and in the evening. So if you’re thinking about what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, this is where layers come in. You won’t go wrong with bringing a comfortable hoodie, light jacket, poncho or big shawl with you. It will keep you warm on both an early morning safari as well as during the legendary evening safari.

When it comes to figuring out your perfect colour scheme to dress up for a desert safari, we’d suggest keeping things on the bright side. If you’re looking to pop on those Insta-worthy shots you’ll be sharing with your friends, go for vibrant colours or classic whites. To avoid attracting any additional sunrays, it’s best to leave the darker tones for your next ski trip.

Sunset in the desert

If the shoe fits…

…make sure it’s comfortable and preferably closed-toe when aiming for that winning dress code for a desert safari in Dubai. When it comes to choosing how to dress for a desert safari, picking the right kicks is almost as important as everything north of it. Though you can of course slip into your favourite sandals or flip flops, you’ll probably be most comfortable in a pair of sneakers or light boots. Strolling through the sand can be quite the balancing act at times, so sturdy footwear will be your best friend. Closed-toe shoes will also ensure you won’t have sand sticking to your toes at all times.

In case you were wondering what to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, it probably goes without saying that stilettos and all high-heeled shoes for that matter are best reserved for a fabulous dinner you’ll surely be attending while in the magical city.

Accessories and other add-ons

There’s quite a few things to carry on a desert safari to elevate your experience. You may have your perfect headgear picked out for your visit to the horse race, but don’t forget to pack a hat for the day in the desert. A suitable hat will offer you much-needed protection from the sun and the winds that can sometimes pick up at a moment’s notice. You can also opt for a scarf that’ll cover both the head and face and shield you from the sand.

Make sure you bring a pair of sunglasses, procure some high-SPF sunscreen, and smack on a generous layer of lip balm. If you want to look like a true desert pro, stock up on some wet wipes to freshen up as needed.

Chilling in the desert

Outfit for any occasion

Your desert safari in Dubai will most likely consist of a number of action-packed activities. When trying to hit the mark with what to wear on a desert safari during the summer and what to wear on a desert safari during the winter, there are some non-negotiables. To make the most of every experience and not miss out on any fun because of a style slip-up, here’s a few tips to keep in mind when assembling your outfit of the day.

Your time in the desert will most likely start with a thrilling dune drive. Although your clothing should be flowy and breathable, something to avoid wearing on a desert safari in Dubai, are clothes that are too loose-fitting as they can get caught in things. For the sake of you and your fellow adventurers, don’t wear any sharp or pointy accessories that could injure anyone as your tackling the dunes.

There’s a good chance you’ll be channelling your inner Emirati strolling through the sand on the back of a camel. The dinner and entertainment portion of your adventure will also have you sitting down on the ground, so the dress code for a desert safari in Dubai leaves no room for a short skirt, dress or shorts. Go for stretchy pieces that’ll keep you covered and comfortable throughout the day.

If you’ve decided to treat your thrill-seeking side to an exhilarating dune buggy experience , opting for sporty and not too loose-fitting clothing is the best idea when thinking about how to dress for a desert safari. For the ladies with flowy locks, a hair-tie is a must.

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again – make sure you bring warm clothes. Especially when faced with a question of what to wear on a desert safari during the winter. There’s nothing worse than having your sumptuous barbeque dinner ruined by shivering in the sand. Once the sun has set, wrap yourself up in a cosy shawl, sweater or hoodie, so the fun can continue without any inconveniencies.

Yes, it is recommended to wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays. Choose a sunscreen with a high SPF and frequently reapply it throughout the day.

Wear a wide-brimmed hat that provides enough shade to protect your face and neck from the sun.

What to Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai: Your Go-To Guide

  • Post author: Ilyas
  • Post published: October 3, 2023
  • Post category: Desert Safari

Hello there, traveller! Considering a trip to the famous golden dunes of Dubai? Are you wondering what to wear for a desert safari in Dubai ?  We’ve got you covered!  A desert safari is more than simply a day trip; it’s an adventure that takes you deep into the desert. Like any journey, choosing the appropriate clothing may make a huge impact.

What NOT to Wear on a Desert Safari

  • Tight Clothing: Picture climbing a dune while wearing extremely tight pants. It’s hardly the best plan, is it? Choose a breathable option.
  • Unprotected Headgear : The sun in the desert is no joke. The best buddy you can have is a hat or scarf.
  • Dark or thick fabrics : These may appear stylish, but the heat of the desert may fry you.
  • Flowy, loose clothing : These are best since you don’t want your favourite scarf to get tangled in a shrub.
  • Impractical Footwear : Refrain from wearing those high heels out of the hotel. Trust us on this. You’ll thank us later!

Dressing Properly for Your Dubai Desert Safari

Maintain Your Cool

Whenever deciding what to wear in Dubai desert safari, choose airy materials like cotton or linen. They’re your best bet against the scorching sun.

Desert Safari Dubai

Chilly Nights

The desert has a funny way of turning cold when the sun goes down. A cosy sweater or jacket will keep you snug.

Stay Protected

Long sleeves and trousers aren’t just stylish; they’ll protect you from the sun and the occasional desert critter.

Respect Local Culture

Dubai is modern but rooted in tradition. Knee-length shorts or trousers and modest tops are the way to go.

Shoes Matter

Closed-toe shoes will keep that pesky sand out and protect your feet.

Seasonal Tips for Your Desert Adventure

Spring (march to may):.

Daytime : When Dubai welcomes the warmth, think lightweight and breathable. Cotton or linen are your best friends. And lighter shades? They’re like your personal sun reflectors.

Evening :Evenings are still quite lovely, with a hint of a breeze. Maybe carry along a light jacket or a pashmina, just in case.

Summer (June to August):

Daytime : Ah, the Dubai summer! It’s sizzling out there. Loose, light-coloured attire is a must. And if you find fabrics that wick away sweat? Jackpot! Don’t forget your hat, sunnies, and a good sunscreen.

Evening:   Warm nights ahead! But if you’re chilling indoors, a light wrap or jacket might come in handy.

Autumn (September to November):

Daytime: The scorching days start to mellow down. Stick to airy fabrics, but feel free to play around with sleeve lengths.

Evening : As autumn deepens, evenings get a tad cooler. A snug jacket or cardigan is a smart choice.

Winter (December to February):

Daytime: Winter here is like a gentle hug. Layer up a bit – maybe a tee with a sweater on top. –

Evening : It can get a bit nippy, especially if you’re out in the open desert. A cozy jacket, a scarf, and even a beanie could be great additions.

A little heart-to-heart, Dubai is a beautiful blend of modern and traditional. So, no matter the season, dressing modestly is key. Especially when you’re exploring traditional spots, it’s good to cover up those shoulders and knees.

Dressing for Desert Activities

Dune Bashing : It’s as thrilling as it sounds. Wear something practical and avoid flowy outfits.

Desert Safari Dubai

Quad Biking: Tie up that hair and gear up in sporty attire. Sandboarding: Think snowboarding but warmer. Closed-toe shoes are a must. Camel Riding : It’s like riding a horse, but… lumpier. Comfort is key.

Desert Safari Dubai

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment: You’ll be seated on rugs, so think comfort. After a day of activities, relaxing in sandals or flip-flops feels heavenly.

Outfit Ideas for Your Desert Day Out:

For the Men : How about khaki linen shirts paired with comfy trousers? Throw in a waist bag and sturdy boots, and you’re all set.

For the Ladies : Wide-leg culottes with a modest beige top sound chic yet comfy. Add a birch bag, a snazzy leather belt, and white flip-flops, and you’re ready to rock the desert.

Footwear Tips

Protective footwear should be your first priority when choosing shoes for your desert adventure. You’ll realise why closed-toe shoes are so important once you’re out there, so make sure you wear them.

If you have a pair of desert boots, this is the perfect opportunity to show them off as they are created specifically for this type of terrain. However, don’t worry if you don’t have desert boots in your closet. You can navigate the sandy portions just as effectively with sandals that have decent traction or even lightweight hiking shoes.

Accessories  Your Desert Look

There are a few key considerations to keep in mind while accessorizing for your desert excursion. Sunglasses are a good place to start. A sand-proof bag is a great investment if you want to keep your electronics protected. Remember the power of a decent hat as well; the larger, the better for protecting you from the sun.

If you enjoy viewing wildlife, binoculars will be useful for those unanticipated “I spy a camel” moments.

Furthermore, sunburn is not the type of memento you want to bring home, so always bring sunscreen. Don’t forget to take some deodorants and wipes so that you may stay fresh during your travels.

Additionally, a roomy rucksack with a waist pouch for goods you need to grab quickly is great for carrying all of your necessities.

Traditional Desert Attire in Dubai

For the Men: The elegant Kandurah, Gutra, Shemagh, Agal, and Bisht.

For the Women : The graceful Abaya, Sheila, Jalaabiya, and Burqa.

Desert Safari Dubai

Final Words of Wisdom:

To conclude, It takes careful planning to navigate the peculiar environment of the desert. It is advisable to prepare an extra layer for warmth because the high midday heat gives way to unexpectedly cold evenings. Closed-toe shoes are extremely advised for navigating the sandy terrains since they provide both protection and comfort. While wearing jeans may seem like a no-brainer, you may discover that knee-length shorts or light-weight pants work better in the desert climate.

There you have it! Your ultimate guide on what to wear desert safari Dubai . Now, go out there and make some sandy memories!

Safe travels!

Dubai is home to some of the most spectacular golden sand dunes in the world. On a safari, you'll have the opportunity to see sand dunes that are hundreds of feet tall, as well as exotic wildlife. If you're looking for a true blue adventure, a desert safari in Dubai is the one for you! For the perfect adventure, wearing the right clothes makes a world of difference.

What to AVOID wearing on a Desert Safari in Dubai

A desert safari is a great way to experience the diverse landscapes of Dubai, from the towering sand dunes to the endless stretches of empty coastline. However, there are a few things to completely avoid when going for a desert safari -

  • Tight body-hugging clothing
  • Leaving your head exposed to the sun
  • Dark colours or heavy fabrics that will absorb the sun's rays.
  • Loose-fitting clothes as they could get caught on things or blown around in the wind.
  • Wearing heels/footwear that make it impossible to walk in the sand.

Dubai Desert Safari Dresscode

No matter what the weather is, wearing comfortable clothing and eliminating potential risks to avoid health issues from the extreme weather remains ultimate. Respecting the local norms is also as important as the former.

By following these simple guidelines, you'll be sure to have a comfortable and safe experience on your desert safari.

  • Lightweight fabrics are best, as it can get quite hot during the day. Wear breathable materials like cotton or linen over synthetic ones.
  • The temperature can drop quickly in the evening, so it's a good idea to bring a light jacket or a sweater.
  • It's a good idea to wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from the sun and from any potential desert creatures.
  • Try to wear at least mid-thigh length shorts or pants. Shorts exposing your bottom are not appreciated by the locals.
  • For ladies, it is better to skip outfits showing excessive cleavage. Sleeveless tops are acceptable as long as they are not skimpy.
  • Short skirts must be avoided, as meals are often eaten on the floor and can seem uncomfortable, especially with the breeze.
  • Closed-toe shoes are essential, as you'll be doing a lot of walking.
  • A hat or scarf can help keep your head cool.
  • Don't forget to pack sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Dressing for the Desert - Season wise

desert safari wear

Ideally, winter is the best time to go for your desert safari. The weather tends to be cooler from November to February, especially in the desert after sunset and until early morning. Make sure to dress in layers, so you easily remove your outer layers off once the sun's out. Long jeans with Cardigans or Jumpers would be ideal. Be sure to carry a snug-fitting hat with ear flaps or earmuffs to protect against the cool breeze. Carrying a scarf or pashmina shawl is recommended. Lip balms and moisturising creams can be carried to avoid dry skin. .

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

From March to May, the weather is pleasant and comfortable. Layered clothing can be skipped, and casual clothing can be worn during these months. Make sure to carry a jacket, as temperatures drop at night.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

From April onwards the temperature is scorching and is humid until September. Lightweight and breathable material is the key to surviving the summer in Dubai. Though the temperature may decrease a bit at night, it is advised to wear loose clothing. Tights, bombers, and sweatshirts can be swapped for cotton t-shirts and pants. And do not skip sunscreen, especially during these months.

Towards the end of September to early November, the heat tends to decrease, however it is still best to wear light clothing until winter starts.

Dressing for Desert Activities in Dubai

Desert Safari is a unique experience that offers the chance to explore the desert landscape and learn about the traditional way of life in the UAE.

The safari typically begins with a 4x4 pick-up from your hotel, followed by an exciting drive into the desert. Once at the camp, you can try your hand at sandboarding, ride a camel, or simply relax and enjoy the stunning sunset. After dark, there will be a delicious barbecue dinner under the stars, followed by traditional entertainment such as belly dancing and henna painting. Dressing appropriately for all the activities makes it easier to have a fun-filled experience.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Dune Bashing

  • The rugged ride in the sand is not for the faint-hearted. Make sure to wear clothes that hold on to their place.
  • Skirts, Sarees, or similar free-flowing clothes must be avoided to handle the tussle of the ride safely.
  • Outfits and accessories with spikes or pointy details should be avoided for the safety of yourself and others in the vehicle.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Camel Riding

Camel Riding is a fun experience and a chance to relive the desert backdrop shown in the movies. However, it may not always be the most comfortable experience, especially if it is your first time riding a camel. Choose shorts over skirts, and pants over dresses. Make sure the outfit is not made or course material or has sharp details on it, as it can potentially hurt the camel.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Sandboarding

Comfortable footwear is the key when it comes to a comfortable sand experience. Choose closed-toe footwear to avoid the sand entering between your toes and creating a gritty base. Again, shorts over skirts and free-flowing outfits to get better traction while sandboarding.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

Quad Biking

You’ll want something to tie back long hair and sports-wear clothing would be best.

For the sport-loving squad, there is no better adventure than Quad Biking in the desert. Avoid heels, short skirts, and loose hair to avoid potential risks while biking. Closed-toe footwear should be worn at all costs.

Desert safari Dubai Clothing

BBQ Dinner & Entertainment

BBQ Dinners are typically served on rugs on the floor. Hence, choosing outfits that are comfortable while sitting on the floor is ideal. The tanoura show and belly dancing also happens while everyone is seated. Short skirts are best avoided. Carrying extra tops is recommended, so you can change into a fresh pair after all the activities during the day. Sandals or flip-flops can be used while sitting down.

Footwear for your Desert Safari

When planning a desert safari, it is important to choose the right footwear. The last thing you want is to end up with blisters or worse, injured feet. While there are many types of shoes on the market, not all of them are suitable for walking in sandy, often uneven terrain. The key is to find shoes that will keep your feet cool while also providing adequate protection from the hot sand and sharp rocks.

Closed-toe shoes are a must to protect your feet from scorpions and other desert creatures. A good pair of desert boots made of breathable material with a sturdy sole can provide traction on loose sand. In addition, you should choose those desert boots that are both comfortable and lightweight, as you will likely be doing a lot of walking during your safari. Sandals or light hiking shoes are a good choice for keeping your feet cool, but make sure they have a good grip to prevent slipping. And if you're planning on doing any camel riding, be sure to wear shoes that won't fall off easily.

With the right footwear, you'll be able to enjoy your desert safari experience to the fullest.

  • Deodorants and antiperspirant wipes to stay fresh throughout the safari.
  • A spacious backpack to store all your belongings.

The kandurah is paired with a Gutra, the headdress. It is a white square scarf, which protects the face and head from the heat.

The Shemagh is also used instead of the Gutra. Just like Gutras, these are square scarves but have white and red checks on them. Young men tend to wear the Shemagh more over the Gutra, often tying them onto their heads without the Agal; the style is known as Hamdaniyya.

The Agal is a band made of black rope, placed on the head to hold the scarf in place. Agal is the suit of the Arabs, commonly used in formal settings. The number of cords at the end (Tarbousha) differ between countries, with the Emirati version having two. They are often perfumed and are used for its aesthetic value.

desert safari wear

A desert safari is a must-do for tourists visiting Dubai. It’s an experience like no other, and unlike the city’s architectural masterpieces, theme parks, shopping malls and souks, The safari is an opportunity to get back to nature.

The desert safari dress code is an important aspect to consider when planning a desert safari. Wearing the wrong clothing can result in discomfort, not being able to fully participate and enjoy in certain activities.

Many people who have experienced a desert safari have said that they were unable to take part in some of the activities on offer due to improper clothing. So if you’re planning a desert safari, make sure you dress appropriately to avoid any regrets later

We, as expert desert safari operators from the last 10 years, have crafted this informational article addressing the commonly asked question “ What to wear in desert safari Dubai? “. Just read this article and we are sure you will get every bit of information you need.

Bottom Line

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of what the best clothing to wear on a desert safari in Dubai is. However, in general, it is a good idea to dress in light, loose-fitting clothing that will help you stay cool in the heat of the desert. If you’re planning on doing any active activities, such as camel riding or sandboarding, you might want to consider wearing something a little more sturdy, like jeans or shorts. And, of course, don’t forget to pack sunscreen and a hat to protect you from the sun!

Firstly consider the type of safari trip

Desert safari is a great way to experience the desert. There are two main types of desert safaris, with each has its own benefits

Evening Desert Safari

Morning Desert Safari

The morning safari is a great way to see the desert sunrise. You can also enjoy a delicious breakfast in the desert. The evening safari is the perfect way to experience the desert sunset. You can also enjoy activities such as camel riding, dune bashing, and watching the Tanoura dance.

Dress code for both these safaris is casual and comfortable. Wearing light and airy clothes is advisable as the desert daytime can be hot. Clothes that can cover the body well are recommended for the evening safari as the desert temperature can drop sharply after sundown. However, desert safari clothes should be neutral, breathable and adjustable for both hot and cold temperatures and plenty of dust.

Recommended Dress Code for Dubai Desert Safari

Here are some simple guidelines to follow for a comfortable and safe desert safari experience, based on deep research and tourist reviews.

  • The best fabrics to wear in the desert are lightweight ones, as it can get quite hot during the day. Breathable materials like cotton or linen are preferable to synthetic ones.
  • The temperature can drop quickly in the evening, so it is advisable to bring a sweater or jacket.
  • It is advisable to wear long sleeves and pants to protect yourself from the sun and from any potential desert creatures.
  • Shorts or pants that come down to at least mid-thigh length should be worn. Shorts that expose your bottom are not appreciated by the locals.
  • For ladies, it is better to skip outfits that show excessive cleavage. Sleeveless tops are acceptable as long as they are not skimpy.
  • Short skirts must be avoided, as meals are often eaten on the floor and can seem uncomfortable, especially with the breeze.
  • Closed-toe shoes are essential, as you’ll be doing a lot of walking.
  • A hat or scarf can help keep your head cool.
  • Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Which dressing is NOT Recommended and should be avoided?

When going for a desert safari, there are a few things to keep in mind in order to have the best experience possible. Firstly, opt for clothing that is loose and breathable – tight and body-hugging clothing will only make you more uncomfortable in the heat. Secondly, make sure to protect your head from the sun by wearing a hat or scarf. And finally, choose light colors or fabrics that will reflect the sun’s rays instead of absorbing them.

So consider these points and try to avoid

  • Clothing that tightly hugs the body.
  • Exposed heads to the sun.
  • Dark colors or heavy fabrics that absorb the sun’s rays and become more hot.
  • Loose-fitting clothes that could get caught on things or blown around in the wind.
  • Heels/footwear that make it impossible to walk in the sands.

Other accessories you should keep with you

  • Sunglasses to protect your eyes from the harsh rays of the sun.
  • A sand proof bag to keep all your devices safe from the sand.
  • Hats to protect you from the harmful effects of the sun.
  • Binoculars can come in handy for spotting wildlife from a distance.
  • Plenty of sunscreen for all the UV rays in the desert (minimum SPF 50) to prevent sunburn.
  • Lip balm with a minimum SPF of 30 to protect your lips from the sun.
  • Deodorants and antiperspirant wipes to stay fresh throughout the safari.
  • A spacious backpack to store all your belongings safely.
  • A sturdy waist bag that stays in place to store tissues, mobile phones, etc.

We also suggest

You can enjoy the morning desert safari with a tank top or T-shirt underneath. You can also bring this for the evening desert safari that reaches out into the night when the temperatures in the desert drop. There are many desert safari locations in Dubai.

Long sleeve Tops with Trousers

Looking for the perfect clothing to wear on your next desert safari? Something that is both comfortable and stylish? Look no further than a pair of lightweight trousers!

These trousers are perfect for the early morning desert safari when the temperatures are still low. They are also an excellent choice for daytime lounging given the general dress code in UAE. Most people will prefer shorts but we don’t recommend them for a few reasons. First, you will sit in an air-conditioned jeep most of the time so the shorts might be uncomfortable. Second, if you get out of the jeep and try any sand activities like sand-boarding, you may end up getting sand in very uncomfortable places. And lastly, it’s not very convenient to take a camel ride in shorts.

So, we recommend trousers as the best clothing option for a desert safari. And if you must wear shorts, try those trousers you can zip off trousers and convert to shorts or the ¾ length trousers.

Use Sunglasses & Hats etc.

The strong UAE sun is a force to be reckoned with in every season. Investing in a quality pair of sunglasses is a must in order to keep your eyes protected. If you don’t like sunglasses, you can try a hat or light shawl instead. Just make sure they stay in place; dune bashing is like a roller-coaster ride and you don’t want to lose your hat or shawl!

Footwear we recommend in Desert safari

And if you’re planning on doing any camel riding, be sure to wear shoes that won’t fall off easily. With the right footwear, you’ll be able to enjoy your desert safari experience to the fullest.

Whether you’re looking for comfort or style, sneakers or sandals are a great choice for a fun day of dune bashing. You’ll be spending most of the time in the jeep, but there will be plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy the desert scenery. And, at the end of the day, you can relax by the campfire in your comfortable shoes.

if you are interested in doing solo or group camping, please read our article about the best places for camping in Dubai.

A desert safari in Dubai can be an amazing trip, but there are some things to keep in mind to make sure you have the best experience possible. First, dress comfortably and in clothes that won’t get too hot in the desert sun. Second, be aware of the sand and how it can get everywhere – it’s best to leave your valuables at home. And finally, simple accessories are best in the desert – too much detail can get lost in the sand.

Whenever you are indulging in a unique experience such as the Dubai desert safari, you should always consider your comfort and safety from the sun’s rays and be ready for the changes in weather and temperature in the harsh and rough desert terrain.

Fabric of the Clothing

Always wear light and breathable natural fabrics, such as cotton or linen. Loose-fitting clothes are comfortable and keep you cool all through the day. Lightweight and breathable natural fabrics help regulate body temperature, which is essential in a hot and relentless environment such as the desert. Your attire should be comfortable and give you the much-needed flexibility while navigating the sandy terrain.

Long-Sleeved Shirts, T-Shirts and Pants

Long-sleeved shirts or t-shirts, along with full-sleeve pants, are ideal for the safari day trip, as they will shield you from the hot sun rays and also keep you cosy and warm during the nights. In addition, these clothes are breathable and lightweight, and protect you from sunburns while being out in the desert. It is better to avoid wearing jeans for your desert excursion, as you can feel uncomfortable in them. You must choose to wear light weight trousers or shorts. Trousers are convenient if you plan to participate in sand activities such as, sandboarding, dune bashing, camel riding, etc.

Light Weight Jacket

A light weight breathable jacket is essential to carry for your desert safari trip. Choose the one that offers protection against the wind and dust, while allowing ventilation.

Invest in a Nice Set of Sunscreen, Shades, and a Hat

As you must have realized by now, the sun in the desert is relentless and unforgiving, especially during the daytime.  Hence, you must take appropriate measures to safeguard your eyes and skin by using a good pair of shades and a good SPF-rated sunscreen. Taking the right precautions is essential to safeguard yourself from the blazing rays of the sun. The relentless sun rays can cause discomfort to your eyes and skin during the journey, especially when travelling during the afternoons or early evenings. In addition to this, wearing a hat can also help in keeping your head cool during the desert expedition.

Sturdy and Comfortable Footwear

The right footwear is crucial for your journey as the fine sands can easily get between your shoes, causing skin irritation and allergies. Always wear close-footed shoes with a good grip when embarking on your desert adventure. Using open-footed shoes can expose your feet to the hot desert terrain, which can be disastrous for your expedition.

Shemagh or Scarf

This fabric will serve as your trusted desert buddy, as it multitasks well, shielding your face and neck and helping to keep the desert dust away from your skin. Coughing and sneezing while inhaling the dust is something that you can be totally avoided with this head cover. In addition, you can also shield yourself from the blazing sun’s rays.

Essential Accessories

You should think about bringing a few extra items with you on your desert safari excursion. If you want to see exotic wildlife, flora and fauna, a decent set of binoculars might be quite helpful. Lip balm, a lightweight bag to hold water, medications, food and other necessities, and a deodorant to help you keep fresh throughout your safari.

What You Should Completely Avoid in your Outfit?

As you look forward to this thrilling desert expedition, you should also note what you should completely avoid in your outfit. Thereby, ensuring that your delightful desert journey goes off without a hiccup in terms of outfit.

Synthetic and Tight-Fitted Clothing

Avoid using synthetic and tight-fitted clothing during your desert safari journey. The flexibility and breathability factor of your outfit is very important when moving through the harsh desert terrain. Tight-fitted clothes retain and trap the sweat, and expose your skin to heat, which can eventually lead to extreme heat-related issues.

Dark Coloured Outfit

Dark colours absorb more heat, eventually heating your body in many ways. When you are in the middle of the hot sun’s rays and the harsh desert terrain, you need your body to stay cool so that your body temperature remains regulated.

Heavy Accessories or Fancy Jewellery

If you have a habit of wearing heavy accessories or fancy jewellery, we recommend leaving them at your hotel. Accessories or jewellery are quite delicate, and considering the ups and downs you will face in your desert journey, avoid them as much as possible. Accessories or jewellery can be easily damaged or lost in the rough sandy environment. You also do not want to garner unnecessary attention in an unknown desert territory. Your safety and comfort should be of paramount importance than your style statements.

Tips for Desert Safety

While your outfit is a crucial part of your desert safari preparations, there are other considerations to keep in mind for a safe and enjoyable experience:

Inform Others:  Let someone know your plans and expected return time before heading into the desert. In case of emergencies, this information is invaluable.

Tools for Navigation:  To help you navigate the desert environment and prevent getting lost, carry a map, compass, or GPS device.

First Aid Kit:  Carry a well-stocked first-aid kit with essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and personal medications that you may need.

Respect Local Regulations:  Ensure you know and adhere to any rules or permits required for desert exploration in your chosen location.

Staying hydrated:  Desert environments can leave you dehydrated due to the high temperatures and dry air. Staying hydrated is essential to ensure your safety and comfort during a desert safari. Consider bringing electrolyte tablets or powder to add to your water. They can help replenish lost minerals through sweat.

Conclusion –

The desert safari is one of the most spectacular ways to explore the diverse desert landscape in Dubai. When planning this impeccable desert adventure, following the appropriate attire and quick hacks will be handy during your trip. When choosing specific clothing brands for your desert safari outfit, it is essential to look for those that prioritize quality, functionality, and durability. What To Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai

A desert safari is an absolute bucket list experience in the UAE but what to wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai? Desert safaris in Dubai are a packing nightmare as you have to think about the local Dubai Dress code rules, the weather and of course the activities that you will be undertaken in the dunes. What to wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai Considerations

What to wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai

When putting together your Dubai Desert Safari packing list there are a few things you need to consider:

  • the intensity of the sun and the high temperatures in the desert,
  • how cool the desert can get once nightfalls
  • the activities you wish to do while on a desert safari
  • how to respect the local culture.

As these effect your outfit for desert safaris so much we thought we would look at these in a bit more details.

The weather has to be one of the largest considerations when putting together your desert safari outfit. If you are not familiar with Dubai weather I think it is worth mentioning than in the Middle East there are only really two seasons: summer and Winter and each of these require different dress codes.

What to wear on a desert safari in Summer

If you have never been to Dubai in the summer I can not describe to you how hot is truly gets. The Dubai Summer is always above 40C but in the desert can easily get up to 50C. And without any shade it can feel hotter than this.

Therefore if you are dressing for a Dubai Desert safari in Summer you will want light breathable fabrics. We recommend only wearing natural fabrics to reduce sweat.

Also you will need plenty of sun protection wear such as sunhat and sunglasses.

It is also worth mentioning that you will want to protect your feet from the sand which can be burning hot in Summer. For this reason we recommend getting closed toes shoes.

What to wear on a desert safari in Winter

As summer can be hot in the desert, it is also worth mentioning how much cooler the desert can be to the city in Dubai in Winter .

This is especially true if you plan to do an evening or overnight safari. If you are staying overnight in the desert you will want jeans and lots of layers as you will notice how significantly the temperature drops once the sun is down.

And of course we always recommend wearing a sun hat and sun glasses.

How to Dress for activities you do on a Dubai Desert Safari

One of the things we love about visiting the desert in Dubai is all the activities you get to do in the desert. However each of these activities do require a certain dress code to be comfortable. In this section we will go through the activities you can do on a desert safari in Dubai and hw to dress for them.

Camel Riding

Possibly the most common activity you can do on a desert safari in Dubai is Camel Riding. However I must say camel rides are not the most comfortable or elegant thing to do.

For these reason we recommend wearing long loose trousers instead of shorts, skirts and dresses. This will be more comfortable, adhere to the Dubai Dress code and protect your modesty.

We also recommend wearing long sleeve tops made of natural fabrics as these will protect you from the sun and any sand blown in the wind.

We also recommend having a pashmina or face covering to help protect your face from the sand.

Dune Bashing –

Another popular desert safari activity is dune bashing. Dune bashing has no particular dress code but you will want to consider that there is a lot of movement in the car.

Tip: I would never take my kids under the age of 5 or go on a dune bashing experience while pregnant.

Sand Boarding

Sand Boarding is quite an extreme and physical activity to do in the desert. Similarly to camel riding we recommend wearing long loose trousers as opposed to skirts, dresses and shorts

Also the most practical consideration has to be in relation to your shoes. To do this kind of activity you will definitely need closed toe shoes as opposed to sandals and flip flops no matter what time of year you are there.

As with camel riding and sand boarding you will want closed toe shoes but also maybe some sportswear trousers. Unlike the above you won’t want anything too loose as this can be a hazard.

Hot Air Balloon

This is normally done for sunrise or sunset in the desert. Therefore the key is to have some layers with you as the temperature really drops in the desert once the sun is down.

If you are staying in the desert for the evening there are two things to consider.

Firstly the temperature really drops so you will need layers with you.

And secondly, for BBQ meals and desert entertainment you will eat Bedouin style on large rugs on the floor. Therefore consider how it will be comfortable and modest to sit.

Personally we always pick long loose trousers as easiest for evenings in the desert.

Cultural Sensitivity

As with anywhere in Dubai, you need to consider the Dubai Dress code rules . And just because you are doing activities in the desert you can’t disregard this rule.

So now you know what to consider these are the things we recommend wearing on a desert safari in Dubai.

What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari for Women

woman on a sand dune - What To Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai

Long Loose Trousers

Although I love a Maxi Skirt or Dress I find long loose trousers such as harem pants a great choice to wear in the desert. They protect your legs from the sun and sand but also keep you modest and give flexibility for activities such as camel riding.

Long Sleeve top

A long sleeve top is my preference in the desert. The sand when it blows is harsh and a long sleeve top provides extra protection from this and the sun. It is also a great choice for modesety.

If you are doing a Dubai desert safari in Winter or staying in the desert for sunrise or sunset pack a top layer such as a sweater, cardigan or even a jacket for winter.

A pashmina is perfect anywhere in Dubai but is great in the desert as it can be an extra layer or be used to protect your face if it gets very windy.

Sneakers or closed toe shoes

Closed toe shoes are better than sandals in the desert as they allow you to do more activities and protect your feet from hot sand.

A Dubai essential.

Another Dubai Essential for city and the desert

What to Wear on a Dubai Desert Safari for Men

Man in desert - What To Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai in Winter and for men

As with the what to wear for women in the desert we recommend men wearing

  • Long loose trousers
  • Long sleeve tops
  • Closed toe shoes
  • A balaclava or face covering for protection against the sand
  • Top layers – for winter and evenings
  • Hat and Sunglasses

What to Wear on a Desert Safari in Dubai for Kids

While kids in Dubai aren’t subjected to the same dress code rules I advise keeping children in the desert well covered in leggings and long tops to protect from sun and sand.

As well as bringing layers, hats and sunglasses.

As I mentioned above as well we would not take young children on a dune bashing experiences as we personally don’t feel comfortable doing so. However if you plan to or if you are going out to the desert with a company you will need to make sure they have car seats. Otherwise you will need to pack car seats with you.

Best Shoes For a Desert Safari in Dubai

Although you may. thing sandals and flip flops are perfect shoes for a desert safari in Dubai I would urge you to think again.

Closed toe shoes are required for most desert safari activities i.e. camel riding and quad biking etc. and also you can not underestimate the temperature of the sand in summer. Be sure to keep your feet protected by choosing a closed toe shoe for desert safaris.

What Else to Take on a Desert Safari in Dubai

desert safari wear

Now you know what to wear on a desert safari in Dubai we will turn our attention to other things you should take. We thing the following things should be on your Dubai desert safari packing list:

  • Hand Sanitizer – there are limited hand washing facilities in the desert so have hand sanitiser with you especially if you plan on riding camels
  • Wet wipes – for the same reasons as above.
  • Towel – good for removing sweat
  • Cash – for added extra activities you haven’t prepaid for
  • CAmera, and spare batteries
  • Battery pack
  • Sand proof back pack.

Anything else should be left at the hotel or at home. the desert is no place for expensive or treasured jewellery as they can get lost easily.

So there you have our complete guide to what to wear to a Dubai desert safari but if you have any other questions please do leave them below and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

What to Wear in Desert Safari

What to Wear in a Desert Safari . In adventure travel , the desert safari is often a favorite. There is something about being out in the open, seeing new sights, and spending time with nature.

If you’re a backpacker looking for travel tips , you might want to check out these articles on where to go and what to see.

It’s easy to underestimate the power of the internet in today’s world. If you have a little spare time, you can start creating a website or blog to share your opinions and ideas with others.

Desert Safari

That’s exactly what I did! I created a website with some information about the things I love about living in Dubai, and the rest is history.

There are several things to consider when choosing what to wear while traveling in the desert. There are some practical concerns to consider, as well as your comfort.

I assume you’re not planning on being in the desert for too long. If you are, I’d recommend picking up some clothing items you can wear between your adventures.

For example, if you plan on spending the day in the desert, pack a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. That way, if you feel uncomfortable, you can easily swap clothes. If you’re staying overnight, I’d recommend packing a light sleeping bag .

The rest of the stuff you’ll need to consider is based on your comfort. I recommend wearing at least a hat and sunglasses.

Have you ever dreamed about going on a desert safari but were unsure what to wear while doing it?

Have you ever thought about going on a desert safari ? If so, you are not alone. This is a trip that everyone dreams about. It’s also a trip where you don’t want to look like a fool.

We all want to feel comfortable there, so we will tell you what to wear so you don’t feel like a fool while on a safari.

When you think of a desert safari , what comes to mind? Is it a long drive through the middle of nowhere? Maybe it’s a night under the stars. Or perhaps you’re thinking of the camel rides, the dune buggies, or the sand paintings.

If you’re anything like me, you dream of a desert safari filled with camels , sand paintings, and cool stuff to do and see.

So, I will share some tips on what to wear when you go on a desert safari . This is important because if you don’t look good, you won’t enjoy the experience.

If you don’t enjoy the experience, you won’t tell your friends about it, which means you won’t attract new customers.

Pack a light backpack.

There’s a huge difference between the clothing you wear in the desert and the beach, but you can generally dress casually.

However, certain items should be avoided. If you go on a desert safari , you don’t want to bring anything that can be ruined.

For example, you don’t want to wear something expensive or delicate.

The best advice is to wear simple, light-colored, durable clothing. You need that to survive.

Now, let’s talk about desert safari clothing. As you may know, a desert safari is a vacation in the desert. It is a great way to experience the beauty and diversity of home while enjoying some adventure activities .

If you decide to go on a desert safari , you may feel like wearing the right clothing will make all the difference. You certainly won’t be the only one.

Several people plan their vacations based on the type of clothing they wear. Many of them have special outfits for their safaris.

It’s important to note that you can wear whatever you want on a desert safari . However, it’s worth considering the weather conditions and the activities you plan to partake in.

For instance, if you’re planning to visit the Sahara desert, you may want to invest in a jacket with a hood. You may want to consider supporting in a lightweight backpack for your trip.

Finally, check out the weather forecast for your destination to avoid getting stuck without the proper clothes.

Pack comfortable shoes

The best thing about a desert safari is that it lasts between 3-7 days. But you’ll probably want to ensure you’re prepared before heading out.

You should bring along sunscreen and bug repellent. You’ll also need to make sure you’re wearing comfortable clothes. After all, it can get pretty hot.

It’s also important to make sure you have a good camera. It would help to share many photos with your friends and family. And if you’re taking selfies, make sure you have a tripod!

As a desert safari enthusiast, I would say a safari jacket is essential. While I’m not sure how it would look on a man, it is a useful garment for women to have on hand.

It has advantages over other options, such as a T-shirt or shirtdress. First, it’s designed to keep you warm while protecting you from the sand. Second, it’s waterproof so that you won’t get too wet. Third, it’s breathable, making you feel comfortable even in the hottest temperatures.

While writing my book, I was frequently asked this question, and clients also frequently ask me about it. The answer is that you need a safari-appropriate outfit.

Since this is a desert environment, you need a hat. Next, you need comfortable walking shoes. They need to be lightweight and have good traction. Finally, your clothes must be loose-fitting and light in color.

I suggest wearing dark pants or shorts, a long-sleeved shirt, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Also, I’d recommend carrying a backpack if you need to pick something up.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, and water.

I’m sure everyone who visits the desert has their own style of dress, but a few common outfits are most common among those who go on desert safaris .

There are several different reasons why you might go on a desert safari . Maybe you’re interested in seeing the wildlife in its natural habitat , or perhaps you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Regardless of why you go on a desert safari , you’ll want to know what to wear and bring.

For example, you’ll need comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely and keep you dry if the weather gets hot. You should also bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and a scarf.

Also, you’ll want to pack plenty of water, a hat, and a light jacket in case you get stuck in the middle of nowhere for a long period.

It’s a good idea to bring some snacks and maybe a portable music player.

You’ll need to wear a suit on a safari. The desert can be very hot, and wearing shorts or a T-shirt is not advised. It’s also important to bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and a camera to capture the experience.

Bring a camera and binoculars.

Are you looking to head off into the desert for a week? Maybe a month? Or perhaps even longer? In this article, I will share my top tips for what to wear when you go on a desert safari .

Are you planning to stay in a tent or a hotel? If you’re staying in a tent, it’s important to pack light and not overpack. If you’re staying in a hotel, you must bring your luggage. So, let’s start with the basics.

Then, you’ll need to consider what activities you plan on doing. Pack plenty of sunscreens if you spend a lot of time in the sun. You may also want to bring along a hat and sunglasses.

There is much information about what to wear on a desert safari , but I wanted to ensure you knew what the weather is like. It’s hot, hot, and very hot!

Generally, you want to wear light colors that let the sunshine. It makes sense to wear dark colors in the shade, but you want to keep your body exposed in the desert.

I’d recommend a white shirt and light-colored pants or shorts. This will allow you to see where to walk and reflect the heat. A hat is also a must!

You can also put on sunscreen, but you may want to uncover your hair. This is because you’ll probably be sweating a lot and don’t want to make your hair dirty.

Have specific cases sent to CDCR so they can investigate and address each of them. There have been instances where CDCR has been found in error, and vice versa.

Conditions of the family visiting units. SIFC asked if all institutions are going to update the units like what was pictured in OPEC for Wasco. There are no special funds for upgrading the FV units, however if the institutions can fit it in their budget, they could.

IFC By-Laws and Membership

It is the responsibility of the IFC to manage the committee membership. The institution only has the final say to membership according to the by-laws.  Local Facilities cannot change the by-laws.

CDCR will be looking at the local by-laws for standardization and will include SIFC.

Updates to Visiting Regulations and the Visiting Application

Example of new application was given, and CDCR is in the process of finalizing. The new application will remove the question to list your criminal history. Backgrounds will still be checked; however, the visitor will not need to list the offensives. The new regulations are also being updated to reflect this but will take a little longer.

Visiting Attire Clarifications

Website was updated to reflect this. Restrictions on color of clothing is chambray blue and camouflage. Visitors cannot wear blue denim pants or what resembles officers’ uniforms or what incarcerated people wear only during visiting.   CDCR repeatedly trains on this and will continue to train. Allowable items were reiterated, gray on gray is okay, other blues are okay, green is okay, white is okay. CDCR will request all DOM supplements again, to insure they do not further restrict DOM.

SIFC would like CDCR to ensure that memos are also sent to SIFC team because currently it is hit and miss.

Dollar Amount Allowed

Allowable amounts will be adults- $100 and juveniles- $50 each person once the new regs come out.

Question: Could people start using debit cards instead of cash? CDCR will investigate. CDCR needs to make sure the machines can take debit cards.

Question: Could visitors start bringing in more than $1s, such as 5’s and 10’s. CDCR will investigate this. The machines must be able to handle the larger bills. To make changes with the vending machines, CDCR will survey all the prisons to make sure all machines can handle larger bills, will they be able to make change for the larger bills, and will they accept debt cards. Once this is determined they will be able to make definite decisions.

Search & Wanding

CDCR does want the 888 forms from searching, it allows CDCR to know what is going on in visiting. Institutions should let people visit if, after wanding, it is determined the reason is hooks and clasps. Bra underwire is still prohibited.

Visiting Hours

Pelican Bay and High Desert have shortened hours for Bifurcated and EOP programs. Many facilities have not shortened their visiting programs, so CDCR will investigate this and insure proper visiting hours are available to everyone while adapting to the ever-changing population.

Trans Metro Summary Stats

Trans Metro will not be continued due to cost and lack of riders.

Ciris Not Updating Specific Camps

SIFC shared concerns that families do not know where loved ones are in Fire Camps. It is for the safety of the incarcerated people due to the remoteness of the camps; however the incarcerated person does have the ability to let the family know where he is.

ADA Seating

SIFC would like to see institutions have larger and sturdier chairs that would accommodate greater weight and larger stature.

Question concerning handicap parking, can someone with a handicap placard park in the staff parking spots when the handicap spaces are all taken. CDCR will investigate.

Language is still being updated through the legislature. CDCR is trying to take family ties into consideration when housing incarcerated people, while also ensuring the mental health and medicals needs and other factors are met. There is no special form to fill out, it is done in the regular classification process.

Availability of DOM Supplement / OP Regarding Visiting and Mail

Some institutions are refusing to give the IFC the DOM supplements for the mail room, visiting and family visiting. CDCR will retrain concerning this. IFCs can have these documents.

Expiration date removed, is being confirmed.

SIFC would like both the IFCs, and IACs meet to discuss the funds each year. Some institutions allow this, but most do not. CDCR will consider.

Some institutions do not have a notary available or charge a great amount for a notary. CDCR will investigate.

Sensory Toys

SIFC wants to know if these toys could be allowed into visiting. CDCR will consider this.
